What's on Insaniak's workbench - All good things must come to an end...  @ 2008/11/19 03:28:12

Post by: insaniak

Thought it was time to chuck up another 'Here's what I'm working on at the moment' thread... and just for a change, thought I might even put it in the right forum...

A couple of these have been posted in earlier stages before...

Wazdakka, now with 75% more hand (still needs a thumb):

Added a little more detail on these guys:

And started a new one...

Also working on a couple of commission projects, including this one:

...and this one:

Hopefully, more soon...

I am almost afraid to ask what the scout/termie reverse cod piece wearers are going to be....but what the heck are they?

Always such awesome conversions coming out of you mate.

Those big termie backs becoming like rear head guards remind me a lot of the serpent guard Jaffa in Stargate

Very cool stuff as always Ins... those Scout Termies are truly unique Your sculpted Ork looks great as well... I'm always amazed by people who can really work with green stuff... 'Hmm, It'd be a pain to convert an arm to fit this odd angle... I know! I'll just sculpt a new one.'

They will eventually be counts-as Terminators for a Scout-themed army.

He's smaller than a Warboss, as he's modelled off a Nob Torso... but that feels about right to me. He's a Mek, not a Warboss... and that Battle Cannon has to be compensating for something

The Dread's based on a standard Dreadnought Chassis, but is otherwise getting a lot of scratchbuilt parts, yes.

Here's a progress shot on the lascannon, with a regular dread lascannon for comparison:

And rough shaping of the torso:

Exo-scouts: Added ends to the inner leg hydraulics, and started adding the padding in the hoods:

And a rough mock-up for the arms:

The scout's hand will be strapped to the inside of the 'elbow' on a rotating pivot to give him full movement. I'm thinking at this point that the 'forearm' is a little too long, making it look a little ungainly and unbalanced. I'll try shortening it up a little, and maybe add another upper arm hydraulic, running along the outside from shoulder to elbow, to aid in sideways lift.

The slide piece on the 'hand' could possibly stand to be a little longer, as well...

The weapons for the Exo-scouts have been giving me a bit of a headache...

My original plan had been to mount the ranged weapon on the right arm, and build a power claw on the left, to keep with the normal Terminator configuration. As the initial arm started coming together, though, that didn't seem quite right.

I really like the idea of these guys as jury-rigged construction or loading rigs, so having both arms with grabby claws seemed to fit better, and serves the added bonus of adequately representing the Terminator's extra base attack on the normally single-attack Scout, by giving them a second CCW.

Mounting the weapons on the forearms behind the claw also didn't work... there's just not enough room for them.

So here's what I came up with instead, also showing the Scout now with both arms, with shortened forearms and enlarged 'hands':

The extra pivot mount on the shoulder mounts the weapon, giving a slightly awkward mount which would probably be a little tricky to aim properly (perhaps they need some cables running up to the weapon and an enhanced targeting system down over one side of the face...) but seems to perfectly fit the jury-rigged image.

Here's the same thing with the assault cannon. The side-on pics have been photoshopped slightly to flip the assault cannon barrel up the right way... I didn't want to go cutting it up until this plan was set in stone...

It's a little top-heavy, so I think I need to extend the feet slightly front and back, possibly with some extendable struts that would clamp to the ground for added stability when firing...

This thread has just given me a truly great idea for something similar but for IG. Making "Orgyns" that are IG in exo-suits. Not sure how to do it but hey, this was just a random idea that popped into my head. About your stuff it all looks great.

Love the whole freight loader get up.

Not a big fan of the gun on the head though - could you swap out one of the "hands" or something for the weapon?

May spoil the vision/fluff a little but might look cooler?

I could, but as I explained, I would rather not. Although at this point, it's up to the buyer. If he likes it, it stays. Otherwise, I'll come up with something else

A little more work in the Dreadnought...

Added a bit more bulk around the waist, to get the body shape a little closer to the artwork's:

Rounded off the upper arms and filled in the shoulder joint:

Still needs a little filling and smoothing.

Some minor work on the weapons:

And started on the final right arm weapon... Assault Cannons came in after the Heresy, which left a couple of options for this guy: Put an AC on him anyway and call it a retrofit, build a more primitive-looking AC and call it an early prototype, or build one of these:

...which will eventually be a twin-linked Reaper Autocannon, intended to count as an Assault Cannon on the table.

Well, man... as yo know, I'm a definite fan of your work.

I was really feeling these exo-suits... until you added the arms. I just DO NOT like the arms. I like the idea of them being mounted to the suit & the trooper grabbing on at the elbows... from the elbows down, though... they just lose me.

The only things I can definitely put into words:
--The hands are too big. They just don't "feel" right with the rest of the model. they're proportionally oversized. Horribly.
--I just can't get myself to even remotely accept the shoulder mounted guns. They just don't look right. I like the idea of arm-mounting them (instead of the 2nd CCW), too.

I know you've said how you feel... and, in the end, it's the customer's choice... I just wanted to pipe in.

Everything you did on the legs, torso & elbows to shoulders, though... WIN.

Eric

MagickalMemories wrote:--The hands are too big. They just don't "feel" right with the rest of the model. they're proportionally oversized. Horribly.

They look a little chunky at the moment, granted. I'm thinking that some of that will be absorbed once I've added the rest of the detailing and a bunch of cables. They have to be big enough to be functional, but that does, at the moment at least, kind of draw the eye to them.

--I just can't get myself to even remotely accept the shoulder mounted guns. They just don't look right. I like the idea of arm-mounting them (instead of the 2nd CCW), too.

Yeah, I suspected that the weapon mount wouldn't be universally popular The buyer likes it, though, so it will probably stay. Again, the rest of the detail may help somewhat.

The arm mount would be fine if I could think of some way of doing it without replacing the second claw, but I just can't see that working.

So, while trying to come up with a better weapon mount, it occured to me that I could always just change the arms...

So I came up with this (very rough at the moment, but should give the basic idea)

The claw's a little large... I would look at scaling it down a little.

The Assault Cannon I think needs a slightly shorter barrel assembly to make it work. And I'm not entirely sure yet how the heavy flamer will fit on there...

Gave the putty on the Dreadnought's torso a bit of a sand down:

And then added the next ring of armour:

Finished off the Heavy Flamer's fuel cannister:

Added some rivets (which are practically invisible in this pic :( ) to the Reaper, along with some little detailing work and there:

...and started prettying them up a little with some putty left over from the torso:

Also widened the groin armour a little, as it was looking a little narrow alongside the torso:

And started work on the power fist:

The Exosuit is a nice concept, but using so much visibly space marine parts doesn't do it for me. Generic Imperial/Merc construction would be much cooler IMO.

now your dred is looking pretty damn cool as well. I decided the thighs were looking a little spindly compared to the torso... so I started bulking them out a little:

As a late addition, the Dreadnought will now be getting a Seismic Hammer, so that it can double as an Ironclad.

So far as I'm aware, we haven't yet seen what a Seismic Hammer is supposed to look like... so I came up with this:

The cylinder protruding from the top is the built-in meltagun muzzle. Still some detailing to go, but the general shape is there.

Rrarw!

Finally got the arm/weapon mount set-up for the exo-suits sorted... We're back to the alien-esque claw, as the client prefers that one (which is good, as I did too ), and the weapons will be going on a mount on the edge of the torso hood.

So, I took the heavy weapons guy and mounted a magnet into his torso like this:

(Still needs some putty around it to seal it in and make it look like it belongs there)

...and modified the heavy weapons to suit.

Assault Cannon, shortened to minimize the top-heavy look, and with the barrel assembly flipped:

Heavy Flamer, likewise shortened a little and muzzle flipped:

And modified Cyclone, with the pods joined into one:

Also started work on the other arms:

I've started working with some styrene for conversions - actually going to "borrow" your exo-suit idea for one of my =I=MundaHeim gangers / heavies...

I have trouble cutting it as neatly as you. Any suggestions or little tips?

I dig the 'hunchback' style weapon mounts. Big fan of shoulder mounted weapons like that ever since my BTech days.

After a bit of an unscheduled break due to some family stuff that cropped up...

Exoscouts: Bionic Arms coming together:

For the Sergeant, as he doesn't have a powerfist, something slightly different was called for...

Taking a leaf out of the Ork Burna Boyz book, and trying to remain in keeping with the industrial work-suit feel, I thought it would be cool to give him some sort of short-range cutting torches that would count as his powersword attacks.

Group shot with bionics on and scout arms started:

I also started in on the final leg hydraulics:

Another group shot, with left arms done and toe caps (to hold their boots into the 'feet) started.

Use a steel ruler as a guide, and either a very sharp hobby knife, or a panel scriber. Don't try to cut right through... score a line, and then just snap it off.

For pipe and rod, I use a mini pipe cutter like this one.

They'll have a small crosspiece that joins the bottom of the rollcage to the front of the crotch-harness.

Do you use the "score & snap" method on plastic pipes, too? I got one of those back in Nov. and played around with it a bit. It wouldn't actually cut the pipe all the way through. It scored it, then just caused it to pucker... but it never punctured it.

Depends on what I'm cutting.

On some of the smaller pipe it won't cut right through, in which case I score it and then finish the cut with a knife.

On some of the larger plastic pipe, the pipe sides tend to bow inwards a little, which makes it harder to cut through. Shove a piece of the next size down inside the piece you're trying to cut (the range is made so that each pipe has a smaller pipe that fits pretty snug inside) to give it a bit of strength.

The only other problem is if you're trying to cut off really thin segments of pipe. In that case, the rollers in the cutter don't always have enough to grab onto, so trying to cut right through tends to get you a bit of a wonky cut. So I use the score and slice method again there... If you want 4 thin slices, score them all with the cutter first, and then slice them all off with the knife.

Back at the Dreadnought...

Assembled the hips and upper legs, but realised that the waist joint was too long, so sawed it off and reattached the ball joint directly to the pelvis:

Started basic shaping of the lower legs:

Started on the shoulder pads:

And discovered when I tried dry-fitting the shoulder pads that the shoulders were sitting too low, and were too wide.

So I sawed off the dread's original shoulder joints, and added a plate of plasticard over the resultant hole.

Need to smooth and fill around it, and then the arms can be reattached at a better height.

In a bout of upcoming new set-induced frenzy, I reposed some Stormtroopers...

I like a little variety in my models, so while the ordinary troopers have enough different poses to keep things interesting, I had to play around a little with officers and heavy troopers...

Some of these still need a little gap filling and the odd touch-up...

Officers:

Heavies:

A couple of regular Stormtroopers cobbled together from leftovers:

All of which is probably extremely unexciting unless you're familiar with the original models...

Together with a couple of their friends:

Finally got back to the exoscouts... I've been doing a lot of little work on them, filling in gaps, finishing off the hydraulics, that sort of thing.

Also added the stormbolters, and touched up the Sergeant's head...

There's a bit of minor touching up still to go in a couple of places, most obviously a couple of divots that need cleaning up on a couple of the Stormbolter magazines.

And, of course, they need their rollcages:

To get these all more or less the same, I built myself a rough and ready jig from a piece of hardwood:

Moving the white peg into the opposing hole does the other side.

Ran into some problems with the rollcages... I fluked the first one, but drilling 1mm holes into 1.5mm rod to attach the crossbeams is a little tricky, and so getting multiple cages assembled without breaking the vertical beams or getting everything misalligned turned out to be practically impossible.

I was also a little concerned that the original rollcage was a little too bulky for the model, but hadn't seen any way of making it smaller without being too flimsy... it was flimsy enough as is.

Then had a bit of a flash: use mesh.

So, I grabbed a bit of 10mm mesh and trimmed it down to an appropriate shape, and wound up with this:

Obviously that's a little rough... still needs brackets holding it onto the top of the torso piece, and the 'beltbuckle' crossbeam to hold the bottom of it... and the finished version would be a little straighter.

The mesh seems to give a decent option in terms of buildability, although in comparison to the rest of the suit, it looks a little lightweight - is thicker mesh a possibility?

Having seen the side-on view, I think the rollcage is a little square - if you'll excuse my dodgy paint edit, a little angle from the top to the waist would improve the look:

It might be, if I can track some down.

Otherwise, I can possibly just thicken up the verticals, which would help it look a little bulkier.

Also, what are the rules for the models?

They just count as Terminators, for an all-scout army.

Gap-filled the shoulder pads and added a gubbin on the back to attach to the shoulders:

Re-pinned the arms in the new, up-higher position:

And filled the torso sides where the plasticard was added, and added some extra length to the belly ring, as it was too narrow (still needs sanding down):

On the Exoscouts, it was pointed out over on the UTC forums that we had overlooked the fact that a model with a Cyclone still has a stormbolter... :(

SO, we had to come up with some way of incorporating a stormbolter that could be removed when either of the other two heavy weapons was fitted.

A few mock-ups later, we wind up with this:

The stormbolter is just sitting in place at this point. It will be magnetised so that it can be removed when the other heavy weapons are fitted... but that's going to have to wait a couple of days while I order some more mini magnets.

Excellent convertings. If I may leave a suggestion for the cyclon+stormbolter: Rotate the stormbolter 90 degrees clockwise and stick it to the cyclon launcher side. So same position as now, but angled differently. You might have to move the ammo drum to the other side of the bolter. Then it comes on and off together with the cyclon, and no more magneting needed.

Mellon wrote:Excellent convertings. If I may leave a suggestion for the cyclon+stormbolter: Rotate the stormbolter 90 degrees clockwise and stick it to the cyclon launcher side.

A good idea, but the buyer decided against integrating the two, as it makes them a little clunky.

Meanwhile, my magnets arrived...

Added a magnet into the left side of the hood, puttied over to look a little prettier, and stuck another on the bottom of the bolter.

End result is something like this:

Still a little cleaning up to go.

Added the Dreadnought's chapter badge to the other shoulder pad:

Did a little more leg work, and added the head.

Not happy with the head. It's a little too small, and the hood sits too low... should extend up to just above his back.

So I'll be cutting it out and doing it over.

I think the right arm could use a slight reposition as well... he's got a bit of a 'gi's a hug then' thing going on. Dropping the elbow to his side a little more, and lifting the arm a little to the front should give him more of a 'charging forward whilst firing, bwahahah' sort of feel.

We've been playing a bit of Heroquest around here over the last few months, and I finally decided that it was about time we did it properly.

So, over the next ... well, however long it takes, since I don't get a lot of free time to paint these days ... I'll be hopefully turning these:

Coming up first: Skeletons!

Quick and easy paintjob... White basecoat, then a coat of Rotting Flesh and a good wash with Devlan Mud. Scyth coated in black, a coat of Tin Bitz followed by a light drybrush of Boltgun Metal. Base painted Neutral Grey (Vallejo), drybrushed with Light Grey, and then washed with Black Ink.

I finished off the base edges with Rotting Flesh. This will carry over onto the other Undead, for easy visual identification on the board. Other monsters will have different coloured base edges.

Found this guy in a clean up of the workbench, and thought I should dust him off and figure out how to finish him off.

I had originally put him aside because I wasn't happy with the pose, and it seemed like too much bother to fix it.

But, in a fit of convertishness, I hacked him up thusly:

...and pinned him back together like this:

The head position's not quite right, but should sort itself out when I glue it in place properly. I'll have to reshape the chin slightly, and replace some of the detail on the hood that was lost when I glued the head to it originally. And I'll need to find him another base, as the one I had for him appears to have wandered off.

Dreadnought's new head is in place... The hood's obviously not finished, so it's a little hard to tell how it sits overall, but I'm much happier with the size and shape so far.

Also added a little more detail on the legs and dccw:

Had a little leftover greenstuff from working on the Dreadnought, so thought I would resculpt Wazzdakka's arm, which I hadn't been completely happy with before.

Still not sure it's quite right, but it's definitely better...

It's not meant to be boxy. It's based on the artwork for preheresy Dreads from the Horus Heresy card game. So the end result is supposed to be something vaguely like this.

Also did some more on the jetbike: added the plating on the bottom of the beak, and 'feather' details on the side of the head:

At this point, it seemed like a good idea to figure out the wings... There are two options I can see here, and I'm a little undecided as to which looks better...

Wings extended:

Or wings folded:

The first looks to me more 'robot-eagle-y'... which the second looks more 'jetbike with eagle bits'...

Woot!
Gotta love the eagle design.

I vote for option 2 though.
Its still suppose to be a jetbike, not a plane. And as far as we know, speeders can do without huge wings, little stubs will do just fine.

The folded design also adds the feeling of speed ... yanno, like an eagle diving for its prey?!

Absolutely great work so far. That dread is coming along nicely!

Excellent work!

Firstly definately wings folded, I agree with others that this looks is a vital part of a jetbike's image.

I really like that Dread, the powerfist arm is particularly impressive great scratch building.

I think this is very close and faithful to the concept artwork from the preheresy Trading card game. Personally I was never a fan of that artwork as it seemed too non-GW to me like others have said it borrowed too much from warmachine. However in terms of reproducing that in mini form you've made the dread look a lot better than the art and actually better than warmachine minis in my opinion.

I Love the chain, but I think that the thing that bothers me about the dread is the fact that GW dreads have really square shoulders/body that hooks forward, leaving the head recessed into the body, where your head is more protuding... Just my two cents worth.

It's based on the pre-Heresy dreadnought artwork from the Horus Heresy cardgame, not the current style Dreadnought.

The blanks I have at the moment are all female. They're not really posable (at least not without some hacking) but are in a whole slew of different poses. I received them from a small Aussie company that I did some photography for a few years back, but so far as I'm aware they never got around to releasing them.

Gah!

Opinions vary, of course, but that hunk of metal put out by GW has got to be one of their worst efforts in recent history.

Plus, on top of that, it is supposed to represent a "Venerable Dreadnought".

This excellent Dreadnought more accurately represents a Pre-Heresy Dreadnought, and matches, almost perfectly, designs of such as seen in the Horus Heresy CCG (and 'artbooks') put out (one way or another) by GW.

That is not a pre-heresy dreadnought, it is a venerable dreadnought.
Pre heresy dreadnoughts look like what insaniak modeled. I think he did a good job matching the look from the Horus Heresy art book.

I must confess, the Inquisitor's chest was bugging me. The breastplate was a just a little too much like a couple of watermelons strapped to her chest... something which my fiance was quite amused about.

So, egged on by derisive cackling, I took a scalpel and gave her (the inquisitor, not my fiance) a quick masectomy, smoothed down the breastplate, and added new, slightly more reasonable breasts, thusly:

They look a little odd, due to being bright green on a grey background. That should correct itself somewhat as I add the rest of the detailing (vertical stripe like on the SoB armour, Inquisition badge in the centre of the breastplate, respirator at the neckline, and probably some cabling from the psychic hood)

Another commission project... I'm building a squad of Sternguard marines, in a similar style to my old Alpharius embiggening project, although without all the trimmings. These guys will be a bit more businesslike, with unadorned armour and lots of veteran-y kit and bionics.

So, starting with a whole slew of bits:

I began removing extraneous detail from the legs:

One of the design features requested on this job was lengthened bolters, possibly in the style of the M41A Pulse Rifle from Aliens.

So, I did a quick mock-up, to see if I could make something vaguely pulse-rifle-ish that still says 'bolter'...

It's meant to be weedy... going from the pulse rifle, it's actually a little large. I was considering replacing it with something a little more like the stock on a 2nd edition bolter.

Hm, I think you misunderstood. I dont mean the stock itself, but the "connection" to the rest of the bolter. Theres sort of a gap, and that kinda looks awkward (to me).

Please dont use those 2ne Ed bolter stocks. Thosere are horrible Old school maybe, but still horrible.

Inquisitor gets some hair:

Going for long hair, with a few braids worked through just to be flashy. Still have to do the other side of her head yet.

Also got the wing options sorted on the jetbike...

So, I started in for real, cutting the basic wing shape out of thick plasticard:

Then cut a feather 'template' out of similarly thick plasticard, and used that to trace out all of the feathers with which to plate the wing panel:

And then started sticking the feathers on, overlapping each slightly over the previous.

Realised at about this point that the front of the wing was the wrong shape, so trimmed it down:

A little late to comment on the dread, but it turned out FANTASTIC. The arm options are incredible, especially the proxy quad-autocannon and twin heavy flamer.

If you mean the grey stuff, it's a modeling putty called ProCreate. Similar to Green Stuff, but sets a little harder and is slightly different to work with... not as sticky, and better for forming hard edges.

I'm following the female =][= sculpt with much interest. It's always difficult for me to tell exactly what a greenstuff conversion is going to look like until it has some paint on it, though. Are you at all worried that the SM backpack is a little large on her frame? Maybe it's just the angle, but it looks like it goes from the top of her head almost down to the back of her knee.

A little, yeah. Waiting to see how it looks once I finish bulking out the armour, but I may wind up needing to cut the pack down a little, or sculpt a new one in a similar style, but slightly smaller.

Started filling in embiggened Marines' leg armour:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
On the jetbike, I filled in the other side of the eagle head, cleaned up the earlier filling, and finished off the detailing on the first side:

Started on the rider's weapon arm:

This was a standard power axe arm, with the axe cut off. I drilled through the centre of the axe handle with a 1mm drill bit, and then with a 1.5mm bit (the handle is only very slightly thicker than that, so using the smaller bit first helps when you want to drill right through without ripping it apart), and inserted a length of aluminium rod.

And nearly finished the 2nd wing:

Tyrant got a bit of a pain in the neck:

Removed the bottom end of the neck so I could extend it slightly, as the head doesn't tip back far enough in the neck socket.

Took the torso sides and drilled out the arm sockets ready for magnets:

Drilled right through the central torso section, and ran a steel rod through from waist joint to head:

Assembled the torso and glued the magnets in place:

So held together, he looks roughly like this:

Due to a bit of a miscommunication early on, it turns out that the pose I was going for with the Hive Tyrant was completely not what the buyer was actually after...

So, the original body went into the 'to be finished later' pile, and I grabbed another Tyrant body and started again.

More of an upright, swooping-in-for-the-kill eagle-style this time:

Tail needed a new curve, so I cut it apart, and pinned it with the end facing the other way. Also pre-drilled and magnet glued in for the implant attack:

And reshaped the hip joints slightly and removed the feet ready for new talons. Also started a framework for the wings:

On the Heroquest front, we're working our way through the Kellar's Keep quests at the moment, and the next quest sees the heroes encounter the skeletons of 4 Dwarven Kings.

Obviously, the rules tell you to just use the regular Skeletons for these guys, as there are no Dwarven Skeletons included in the set.

This is clearly a deplorable state of affairs, so I made these:

Converted from the regular skeletons, with arms and legs shortened, a vertebrae removed from their spines, the scythe cut down, and a shield and axe head added. Oh, and crowns or helmets added with green stuff.

A comparison shot with the original skeleton:

They're still largish Dwarves because the original skeletons are huge, but they're shorter by comparison, which for the sake of a boardgame is close enough for me.

Judging by the size of the "hole," I'm thinking it'll be a diorama base to include an opponent or victim/objective marker.

Nearly there...

Added the Inquisitor's bionic arm, gave her digital weapons (the small nodules on the back of the bionic hand), an ammo feed and ejecting cases on the storm bolter, a rear loincloth, hair on the other side of her head, finished the psychic hood, and finished off a little minor detailing.

Apologies if these pics are a bit off... My monitor is playing up, so I'm just guessing at colour balance and brightness.

It seems like your skills are getting better and better with each update. The progress youve made with the inquisitor is amazing. I really like the pose you came up with. Alot goin on, while not too busy.

The tyrant is spectacular. Love the feet as well as the pose. Excellent stuff

The iron giants actually look pretty hawt next to the old-school necrons. That should work out pretty well

With the last few minor details sorted out, and a pair of consecrated scrolls added on her hip, I think the Inquisitor's about done...

And a bundle of bases for her retinue:

lovelovelovelovelove the inquisitor. Will a painted pic be forthcoming? Just curious.

Can't wait to see the Tyrant finished. Right now it's very "Danielsan" from "Karate Kid."
