I wanted to wait a while, and have some actual pictures to show before starting this blog on my attempts at scratch building a Banelord of Khorne. So hope everyone enjoys.
Having been in the hobby for over ten years, I've accumulated a ridiculous amount of models I knew I was never going to get to. So after the PDF of the Banelord of Khorne was released by GW, I figured I'd try scratchbuilding something bigger than a tank, and use all those unopened models I had as well.
While a scale accurate Banelord Titan would have been impressive, I didn't like the idea of having to lug around a model over three feet tall. So the fluff behind my Banelord would be that this particular Titan was salvaged by the Dark Mechanicum, into a leaner/meaner construct with the bound demon being more animalistic than anything else. Size wise, it should be about the size of a Reaver Titan when finished, with a profile similar to the ED209 from Robocop.
Here's what I have so far:
The battle head is made from a Landspeeder with a Leman Russ turret and some plasticard to construct the Khorne skull features.
The carapace is from some plastic shells I was able to find at work, Whirlwind missile launchers will be put in the turrets, and a large banner over the middle. I used the WHFB Black Coach driver as a totem up front.
The pelvis is a combination of the Defiler torso, a Basilisk shield, the bottom of a Drop Pod, and a FW Chaos Icon.
Upper legs (and yes I am using Fiddlestix for the frame of this thing)
One of the legs and feet.
And finally the beginning of the Doom Fist.
I still haven't started on the cannon arm or the tail, as I'm hoping to finish detailing each component before moving on to the next one. Hopefully I'll be able to update this blog regularly, so any comments or questions are welcome.

But the amount of bits spent on it seems to be expensive ><

Great work so far, really liking the creative use of bits. As others have said, this must be costing you a pretty penny, but it looks like it will be worth it.
The drop pod bits are excellent, big pieces like that with good detailing are just begging to be used for conversions.
Keep it up!

Thanks for all the comment. In regards to the question of bitz I had to buy, this really was an attempt to use a bunch of kits/parts I already had lying around. Other than the FW pieces, I've only recently bought the Defiler, Landspeeder, Whirlwind and Drop Pod (although, now that I think of it, that is quite a bit ;-)
I'll try and answer a few of the comments/questions:
- I agree that the exhausts are a bit on the weedy side, contemplating adding some height to them with plasticard tubes.
- The havoc launchers will be from the Whirlwind kit with added chaos icons, and the tail will be done with heavy gauge aluminum wire and plasticard mostly.
- I'll try and get some photos of the legs from a frontal angle later today.

Very nicely done! Will you be doing something for the rear of the claws as well? It seems a bit unbalanced right now; or will they be attached to the base? The kasrkin really puts tthings into perspective as well...
I'll eagerly be awaiting updates.

I'm glad everyone seems to like it. To answer a few more questions:
- It's definitely going to have to be pinned to the base I'm planning.
- I'd like to add a back toe to each foot, but not sure if I have a bit that would work (still trying to track one down)

So I was able to glue each of leg pieces and add 90% of the details I believe. I temporarily pinned them to the pelvis as well to try and figure out what to do next.
Front view, armor plating and hanging cables will be added when it's all glued together.
I'm tempted to start calling it the evil chicken.
While it's standing pretty firm right now, it will have to be pinned to stop it from tipping over.
The "knee pads" still need some work, need to figure out how to cover up the messy parts and add some iconography.

Post by: CommissarKhaine
More a turkey then a chicken gpoing by its size .
I think the legs look properly techy and chaos-like, buty I still feel you need to add a "heel" or a claw facing back. If you decied to add them, make sure you start off high enoug on the calves. iIf you look at animals, the backward-facing claw often starts off pretty high.
I'm assuming the crookedness of the legs is due to them being pinned instead of glued?
5702
Post by: ratmkith
Ah, good to know about where to put the back claw. The back side is kind of plain anyways, so the additional claw should be very helpful.
And yes, the crookedness is due to the temporary pinning. While the left leg is slightly shorter, the base has been heightened to accomodate, and glueing the legs to the pelvis should straighten it all out.

Post by: ratmkith
Quick update to confirm this project isn't dead. I'm using two Basilisk barrels as the Hellstrike Cannon, with plans to have an ammo hopper of some sort hanging off the bottom. Also have added a few armor details but nothing too noticeable.
Here's a couple of shops of the WIP mock up...do you guys think the cannon looks too small compared to the rest of the model?
Oh and the aluminum wire is the beginning of the Titan tail. The goal is to use plastirod as support pieces and have it look like a dinosaur fossil tail (if that makes any sense).

Post by: mcfly
That looks absolutely completely awesome, but I have to ask, what is the left arm? Like a dreadnaught and a droppod or what?

Post by: Typeline
What is that huge chaos icon with the skull in the center with the icon of Khorne on it from? The one on the pelvis?
Speaking of that, although it would probably be better in a fluff sense for it to face more downward on the pelvis so troops on the ground would be seeing this terrifying symbol, it'd probably be better from a modeling standpoint to angle it so that players viewing the game board will see it more clearly. Basically move it up a little is all. But we haven't seen all the pieces on it yet, like the arms, head and such. They might provide overhang to actually hide it from a player who isn't shorter or looking for line of sight for his troops.
Regardless though, this thing looks brutal. Can't wait to see it completed.

All kinds of awesome .
Just one important remark: I'm afraid the torso isn't really wide enough; will the arms fit between the shoulders and the hips? I know I cursed a lot when i built my knight, it was my major design error. If you look at the old titans, the shoulders are a lot wider thent he legs, allowing the weapons to hang next to them. Have you test-fitted them yet? If not, consider doing so before continuing.
The coach rider is brillant btw, very inspired!

That banelord looks like three things:
1. a titan, different from the original epic mini, i like that idea.
2. SO FRIGGIN COOL! but it needs a skull rune of khorne on the pelvis, not an 8 pointed star.
3. its going to have some major wieght issues. might want to reposistion the upeer legs so it won't tip mid-game and crush beautifully painted mini's and terrain.
10101
Post by: kharndude
Wow that looks loke it took a long time to build.

Post by: ratmkith
Thanks again for comments...just to answer a few of the questions:
- The doom fist is one panel from the drop pod built onto a balsa wood frame, the chain saw portion is also from the drop pod with two of the side fins glued together. The "gun" on top is two SOB Immolator flamers side by side, covered by the Defiler cannon demon cover.
- The torso width is actually a bit worrisome, I did a test fit and the arms do fit but just barely. I'm planning on having them angle out, so it should work (fingers crossed).
- Balance is definitely a problem...I'll be pinning the legs to a custom base, so hopefully it doesn't come toppling over. I'm hoping the tail and arms are able to balance it all out.

Post by: lord marcus
You better bolt it to a piece of shaped plywood.
secondly, again, not seeing a khorne symbol on the pelvis.

Post by: ratmkith
I've probably been working on this for the last three months or so. I'm naturally a slow builder/painter, and since I didn't have a solid plan when I started, there was a lot of random guessing of what bitz would work where.
I've only got the two arms and tail left, so the building process should be done shortly. The painting on the other hand may take awhile...but my buddies lending me his airbrush so that should help.
5702
Post by: ratmkith
Well, I can now say that the legs are completely done. Trying to get the detail right seems to be the most time consuming part of this project, so bear with me if these latest photos don't look too different. Most of the additions are the armor plating where the hip will be connecting to the leg, various cabling, as well as the green stuff banners.
The cable is some old computer power cable I had lying around.
The front armor pads are from the IG tank tread guard and rhino top doors.
Lots of plasticard rods and rivets...
And finally the knee pad...not sure if this looks right, but hopefully I can cover it up in the painting process.

Thanks for all the comments.
Here's the latest update, as the Hellstrike Cannon arm is now nearly finished. I still have some detail to add, but I think it's pretty much there. I'll probably add a banner to hang off the end of the barrels, but am still trying to figure out whether or not to add some type of ammo hopper off the bottom of the main assembly.
As usualy, comments and suggestions are welcomed.

Looks cool! I still feel it's a bit thin, but that may just be me. I'd consider adding both an ammo hopper (would make it look a lot more finished) and some kind of iron banding around the front two barrels, tying them together.
The angle of the arm is probably becasue of the torso width?

Thanks guys:
@xv-89 crisis - I didn't even think to spread the toes out until you mentioned it. Now I'm kicking myself for pinning and priming everything.
@CommissarKhaine and Azmodai - The crazy angle is definitely due to the torso issue. Hopefully the chainfist arm fits a bit more smoothly. In regards to the ammo box, I'm thinking of doing dual banana clip magazines, similar to an AK-47...possibly with the middle exposed to show the shells.

I have an 80% completed Chaos army and a 50% completed IG army, so the majority of the bitz came from various conversions I've already done.
In terms of unopened kits that have gone into the Banelord, that I already had, they were:
- Chaos Land Raider
- Basilisk
- 2 Rhinos
- Leman Russ (from the IG Battleforce)
The kits I bought new were:
- Defiler
- Drop Pod
- Land Speeder
- Basilisk (just for the cannon, I'll probably convert the chassis to a Salamander)
- Whirlwind
5702
Post by: ratmkith
So creating the banana clip style ammo boxes was much easier than I expected. I just cut out the shapes in plasticard, and used rod to represent the shells, here's a WIP shot to serve as a quick explanation:
Which lead us to the nearly complete Hellstrike cannon arm. I took the advice of adding a band around the barrels and added the WHFB skeleton banner on the bottom. All that's left are some rivets and a couple final details, and I should be able to move onto the Doomfist arm.

Unfortunately updates were put on hold due to work, but managed to get a little work done on the Banelord this evening. The original plan for the havoc launchers was to have them low-key and close to the carapace, but after a test fit I realized the profile was too low and just plain-looking.
So using the tips of the drop pod fins, and more plastirod, we have some hydraulic havoc launchers rising out of the carapace:
The above photos are test fits, so the havoc launchers aren't quite straight. They'll be painted separately and glued during the final assembly.
The next step is to add a large banner in between the two havoc launchers. I'm planning on using the large chaos star icon from the Defiler kit proped up on two poles with the banner hanging below it (and toying with the idea of adding a crucified/eviscerated loyalist space marine hanging as well).

Thanks again guys, the doomfist arm is coming along nicely and should be done by the end of the weekend. That leaves the tail (not looking forward to it) and the banners, which should be relatively easy.
I've already begun priming the finished pieces so painting shouldn't be too far off. I've been debating the paint scheme, and while it is Khorne, I think painting it all red doesn't really work. So I'm leaning towards a Red Corsairs look with mostly black for the body, and the armored portions in red.

Post by: ratmkith
I forgot to add this in my previous post, but wanted to get your guy's opinion.
The front deck on top of the carapace, between the havoc launchers where the railing is, looks a little empty. I've been toying with the idea of adding two gunners, one at each corner firing a heavy stubber.
Now the question is:
1. Does the idea of people firing from the top of a rampaging titan look/sound out of place?
2. Would Khorne Bezerkers or Traitor Guard/Blood Pact look more fitting as the crew of a Banelord?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't do it myself. Draws focus away from the titan. If you do crew though, I'd go the chaos marine route.

According to fluff chaos titans don't have crew as such. They're either joined to the machine, or the titan is posessd by a daemon; I even believe old fluff described banelords as possessed with a bloodthirster. Besides, if you look at GW titans, it's an empty spot on all of them, and the attention will be drawn to the havoc launchers.
If you abolutely feel like adding something up there, I'd consider skulltaker, the bloodletter SC. He fits the Khorne image, can be painted in similar colours, and has quite a suitable pose too.

tallmantim wrote:I think that any self respecting Chaos worshiper of Khorne would much rather be launching himself into hand to hand combat than standing back shooting with a stubber...
Any true follower of Khorne knows that:
1. Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows.
2. Khorne respects martial prowess in all its forms - most Khornate daemon engines have enormous guns on them.
OT: That's the best Titan scratchbuilt I've ever seen. Best use of parts I've ever seen. It's amazing.

I'd say crewless, but if you did want to put crew on it, I'd say it'd have to some sort of dark mechanicus type, rather than generic blood pact.
And to HBMC: Everyone forgets that Khorne doesn't care, as long as blood flows. Sad, really.

i always think having crew on any vehicle is a good thing, it makes it look a bit more detailed, and i think on something this size, having several things for people to look at makes it more interesting. For example, on a model train layout, there are always several little dioramas spread out on the layout, so i say yes to gunners - khorne would be best

The Banelord has daemonic possession - no crew.

After some more work related delays, here is the latest update everyone.
As I mentioned in my last post, the Doomfist has been giving me a bit of a problem. My biggest issues have been trying to get the fingers to look decent, and just getting the general functional look of the arm (making sure it looks like it could actually function). I think I've made some good progress on it, but now the arm is almost as big as the carapace!
I still need to add the thumb, the blades to the chainsaw, and add some armor so that it can connect to the carapace and not look deformed. But enough of my blabbing, here are the pictures:
In a bit of warning to everyone out there, try and plan out your titans as much as possible before building. After doing a test fit, I realized the arms were getting in the way of the legs. I was able to fix this by having the model twisting at the waist...hopefully, this makes it look more dynamic and not like a silly dancer or something. I hope to have some finished pictures of the arm, and the beginning of the tail next.

I think it looks a bit too busy. All those extra guns? I would stick with the saw and the fist. Without those weapons there you'll be able to better focus on creating a good hand. And it looks like you're really trying to stick to using bits, that's tough for a hand. I would start with some plastic card for the hand and detail it from there.
It looks cool, just to busy.

Thanks again for all the comments, I really do appreciate the encouragement. I do think the Doomfist arm is a bit too busy, but I'm hoping it looks more reasonable once it's attached to the rest of the model. I'm almost tempted to buy the new ForgeWorld Reaver Titan arm, but can't be sure if it's a match size-wise, and it would be against the whole "using all my bitz" goal.
Anyways, just a small update today. Did a little work on the banner and test fitted the disemboweled loyalist marine. I'm not sure if I'll be keeping the small WHFB Skeleton Banner under him, but I'm planning on having long skinny banners hanging from each end of the framework (just below the skull piles on the left and right). During the painting stage, I'm hoping to get a nice spilled blood effect directly underneath the marine.

I like it a lot. But do you have a different head you can use for the marine? I would figure any face things would have been ripped off. A bald yelling Sergent head would be good.

I would go for with either a sergeant head that is yelling or a skull, to show that the marine has been up there a while and long since died.

Unfortunately, it was the only exposed SM head I had without buying any new figures. I'm hoping to paint him as barely alive but with very palid skin and the eyes rolling back, if I can pull it off.
The Jesus similarities while unintentional is a bit amusing. I'm tempted to add a sign in latin above him to make it official.
The disemboweled stuff is actually a bit from the WHFB Zombie kit, I think there's at least four of those bitz per box.

I was originally hoping to do one large banner beneath the marine, but it just didn't look right. So ended up doing two thin banners hanging from either side. I also added ropes around the marines wrist since the pinning didn't really work.
Per your request, a quick photo with the head attached.
Still alot of small details to finish, but it's definitely coming along...

Haha I wasn't sure where all the Jesus referemces were going to go, but glad to see everyone seems to have a good sense of humor.
Space Marine Jesus, will definitely be painted blue, I wanted something to contrast from all the red that will be on the Banelord. It's kind of hard to see, but I used the Ultramarine chapter icons from the drop pod kit as hip armor plates on the marine.
@Beamo - In regards to the height, I think it's around 18 inches tall, not counting the banner on top or the display base when finished.
I'm thinking the carapace looks a little weedy, so am trying to add shoulder pads/armor as well as maybe making the power plant a little bigger in the back.

Post by: ratmkith
After a hellish month at work, and helping friends with some projects, I return with some updates to the Banelord project.
After test fitting the arms, I realized that both the torso and head were way to small. I've decided to redo the head to make it a bit bigger, meaner, and less orky (not sure how I'm going to do this, but it'll be fun to figure out). In terms of real work, I added shoulder pads to try and make the carapace appear bigger. Having run out of chaos bitz, I broke down and ordered an additional set of Chaos tank accessories, which should hopefully be delivered shortly.
Now onto the photos:
I'll be adding some armor plating in front, to hide where the arms connect to the body.
The havoc missile launchers will be glued straight, after they are painted separately.
Detail of the shoulder pad...more etched brass needs to be glued on, spikes will be added to the top, and chains hanging from the bottom.
That's about it for now, still need to start on the tail, fix the head, and add more banners.

@Jabbakahut - Definitely true, it's always that fine line you have to walk. I'm trying to use bitz that look like they perform some function, and aren't just decorative. I'm tempted to add more raised designs with plasticard as well, but think it would look too busy.

I finally started work on the tail, using the aluminum rod as a base and plastic rod/plasticard for the segments. Now I need to cut out the fins and blades that will be added to the sides.
I've placed two lascannons on the end as the Chaos Titan Tail, and just trying to add some additional blades or spike to make it more chaosy.

Overall, this is a stunning project and Im looking forward to the finished thing.
Now, the tail is awesome. But Id just cover the back in spikes and not the whole tail (unless I misread and you were going to do that anyways).

Post by: ratmkith
Thanks again guys. The tail is a bit spindly at the moment, and I'm going to have to green stuff the crap out of it when I attached it to the torso just to make sure it doesn't snap off every game.
The plan is to glue down an old power cable along the top of the tail, and then add Dark Eldar style blades along the sides. It's going to be a pain to cut all the pieces, but it should bulk out the tail just enough.

5702
Post by: ratmkith
The comments are much appreciated as always.
@ TheMightyWarhamster - It's hard to see in the last photo but I have the tail coming out and over the left shoulder of the Titan. If it works out, it should look like a scorpion tail coming over the body.
I've added a ton of plasticard "armor plates" rivets on the tail, and should have pictures later tonight.
5702
Post by: ratmkith
As promised, here are some new pics of the tail in progress.
After cutting a ton of plasticard, I covered the top of the tail in armor plating. If you couldn't tell it was a Chaos titan before, I think the tail can erase any doubt to it's loyalties.
A closer look at the armor. Once the painting stage starts, I'm planning on using a lot of rust effect around the many rivets on this thing.
I also realized the lascannons looked way too small by themselves, so I'll be adding a large blade to fit in between them and really get the scorpion tail image across. I had one drop pod fin left, and am in the process of whittling the edge down to a blade shape.

Looking cool! The legs seem to be a bit big but that may be the pose. I really like the tail as well. I wouldn't consider bulking up the head though, since it'll make the torso look even smaller.
If you could find a way to bulk up the hip area, I think he'll look less skinny (had the same problem when I built my knight). If you still have some drop pod side, the might make nice hip armour?

Post by: ratmkith
Thanks again for the comments folks. The test fit was initially done to make sure the Banelord wouldn't tip over, so that part of the test was successful. However as many have noted, the legs are a bit big when compared to the rest of the model.
So to remedy this, the current plan is the raise the torso from the pelvis about an inch or so, and cover in armor plating. Also, the head will be bulked out with the Khorne skull image, so this should balance the top/front of the model with the bottom/back where the legs are taking away too much of the attention.
Unfortunately the legs are glued in the positions they are in and can't really be changed. However I will be returning the torso to the forward facing angle which should balance the model out as well.

I've been having a hard time trying to get the body bulked out to offset the giant legs, but have made a little progress lately. While I don't have anything from the torso to show yet, I was able to get the head redesigned to look a bit more Khorne-like and less Orky. Below is the original incarnation, followed by the updated version:
OLD HEAD
NEW HEAD
I had forgotten I had a box of Ogre Kingdom guys, and thought the cattle skull was a nice touch. I'll also be adding green stuff banners from the side fins.
The torso has also been raised by an inch and I'm slowly adding the armor plating and cables. I've been inspired by the Forge World Slaughterer and Brass Scorpion and am looking at using the bunched cables as a nice organic/mechanical hybrid look.

I didn't realize how much I would be going back and rebuilding parts of this model, but it seems like the head and body are the main stumbling blocks for this project.
In regards to needing more skulls, I've already gone through two new boxes of the WHFB Skeleton Regiments. Each box only has 12 or so bare head skulls, so it's a bit pricey. At this point I can either start a Vampire Counts army or if anybody wants some cheap skeletons, please let me know.

@ Cadavar and Person Person - Thanks for the links, those skull alternatives should come in very handy for the final detailing.
I haven't been able to work on the Banelord in the last month, but I'm slowly getting back into it.
In response to the leg positioning, I'll be bringing one of the legs back to look like it's in mid-stride. And while the original plan was to paint it in sections, I'm quickly realizing I'll have to assemble it first if I'm to make sure it can stay up by itself.

Amazing work and far better than anything I could do, my criticism is therefore from my position as a viewer and fan.
The two shoulder plates that drop down either side, increase size and 'bulk' of those and greatly increase the size of the gun arm, it will lend credence to why the legs are so heavy duty, the current duel earthshakers look too weedy imo.
Loving the upgraded head btw.

Post by: ratmkith
Thanks to the comments of you faithful readers, I realized that the Hellstrike Cannon was indeed way too small. So after getting some more rod, I lengthened the barrel and braced the base like the new Shadowsword tank. This only leaves the Doomfist arm, and figuring out how to connect the tail before I can finally start painting this beast:
I know the waist looks a little thin, but the armor plates from the previous photos bulk it out nicely. I'm also going to try and make some extended exhaust pipes with the leftover rod, as well as try and figure out how to hang loyalist marines on chains between the shoulder horns (similar to the artwork on the Ogre Kingdom codex).

Post by: ratmkith
@Dreadnote and NurgleBoy77 - Thanks guys, I'm hoping to have the tail in place as soon as possible. The grim reaper will be painted as a stone statue with plenty of aging and weathering, so it should make it much more subtle. The horns should also look better once they're painted to match the rest of the Titan.
@Goliath - It's gotten a bit bigger than I originally planned, but everything is/will be pinned so no movement. Just trying to get it to a store for gaming may be quite the exercise in packing and careful driving.
@sdf boy - Thanks...and yes, the photo was taken next to the john. The titan is now too big for a light box, and I've discovered the bath room is the perfect place to take photos as all the mirrors reflect and amplify light nicely.

Gaargh! I wish I thought of that before I glued the marine down...too many great ideas presented by Dakka members, after I glued stuff down. Thanks for the suggestion regardless. Unfortunately, I haven't had too much time to work on the Banelord lately, mostly detailing the tail and putting together some more loyalist marines to hang, but hopefully some more photos in the next few days.

My Dark heart smiles at what an awesome model you have converted. It surely is a work of art. By my count you have used pieces from.
Whirlwind
2 Rhinos
2 Basalisks
Drop Pod
Defiler
FW Chaos Star, Khorne Brass Etched, Renegade Brass Etched
CSM New and Old Vehicle Sprues
Undead Black Coach driver
Landraider
Leman Russ
Ork and Marauder Fantasy Shields
Necron Destroyer
Landspeeder
Plus lots of Plasticard, GS, and Wood.
The only thing I think this needs is a better base. A diorama or least a destroyed building or something would be proper.
Great Job.

@HuronBH - Wow color me impressed friend. You're pretty much spot on except for the Ork Shields and Necron Destroyer. I originally had a shattered Rhino planned for the base, but unfortunately it screwed up the balance. I'm trying to figure out how to add some running guardsmen and smashed victims.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just a quick update...managed to finish the Chaos Titan Tail end. All that's left is to add rivets on the inside of the tail, and then I can move onto the Doom Fist.

I'm still adding some final details to the body and Doomfist, but I was getting impatient and wanted to try out the paint scheme. While the original plan was to have the Banelord looking ancient and weathered, when you're dealing with a 10 story killing machine stalking the battlefield I don't think subtlety is a major concern.
A little brighter than I planned but I think it helps make the model stand out:
There's still a bit unpainted (particularly the brass and black highlights) but you get the general idea. As usual any comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Looking nice. I like the fading to orange thing, it will really make it pop on the tabletop - well, above the tabletop is probably more correct with this beast. .

Awesome painting.
You should keep track of its kills, once you hit 15, add another pile of skulls!
or for every super heavy, one crew member's body!!!

Amazing job. The resources you used to build it are a great step away from the traditional "All Plasticard" method. May even inspire me to start building a titan now that you've given us all the idea of using a wodden frame from a construction kit.
My only issue is the legs. They look really goofy backwards, but it's a bit late now for that
Otherwise, again, stunning model. Absolutely stunning.

Don't forget to add armor plating on the tail.
Other than that great job.

Thanks again for the comments everyone...
@Person Person - again thank you for the awesome ideas. I recently bought the WHFB Battle for Skull Pass box set to start a Nigh Goblins army, and I think the skull pile counters they have would be perfect for tracking in game kills. In terms of titan kill markings, not sure yet...I finished the eviscerated loyalist marines to hang off the horns, but not sure where I could add anyone else.
@ metallifan - Thank you, the intention was to try and make a unique titan design and I've been pretty happy with the results. I do highly recommend the wooden toy frame as it's pretty sturdy and reduces weight/bulk nicely. The backward facing legs is probably the most "unique" part of the model and seems to have people evenly divided, hopefully it looks more uniform after it's all painted.
@ FlamingGuant - You've actually hit a key problem I've been having. I built the tail wrong and the armor plating wraps around from the wrong side, so it's mostly the underside of the tail that's exposed. I've entertained the thought of having chains coming down the entire length, but it just looks funny. Scale wise the tail looks okay against the body, but any suggestions on how to improve it is welcome (I'll try and have pictures to illustrate the point shortly).

Sorry for the lack of updates everyone...on top of being busy with work, I got a little burnt out with this beast. Basing, priming and basecoating took quite a bit out of me, but I've returned to actually painting. Having glued the torso and legs together has made it a little difficult to get a good painting angle, but hopefully I can get through it relatively quickly. Also the large flat armor panels are proving difficult to get a smooth highlight, but hopefully the mistakes will be covered with the weathering and text I plan on adding later.
So here's how it stands so far:
P.S. - This is the first post I've used the Dakka gallery function. I'm hoping to transfer the old photos over so hopefully the blog will look better and load a little faster.

This is the first time I have visited this thread, and I am utterly blown away by the model. This is truly awesome. What I think impresses me the most is the way you have used all these familiar pieces in a radical way, cutting them up and seeing something different in them.
This is truly excellent, and very worthy of Two Thumbs Fresh from the old adverts. What were they advertising again? Not Titans, I am sure.

and where is the horribly mutilted bodies underneath the titans feet?
i seriously love this titan, its coolest chaos titan ive seen. and i have seen alot of chaos titans.
im not sold by the scythe weilding cadaver sitting on top though. seems kinda nurgley.
love the crucified space marine though
overall amazing model. lotsa gore for the gore god!

Post by: ratmkith
Thanks everyone , I appreciate the kind words.
@ghostly - I honestly didn't plan the base out as much as I should have. The original plan was to have a Rhino crushed underfoot, but poor planning while building the legs left me with no choice but to do a simple base. In regards to the scythe wielder, that along with the backward legs seem to be the two items dividing a lot of readers. I'm planning on painting it as a stone statue, so hopefully it'll be subtle enough and not make the whole thing ridiculous.
@Darknight - Thanks again, most of the bitz use can be attributed to the fact that I've been in this hobby way too long and have way too many half-built and leftover projects lying around (which was one of the reasons I started this project). I honestly only started with a general idea for the Banelord, and spent alot of time trying to figure out how to fit pieces together.
Here are some more photo updates:
Finished the missile launchers, so glued them down. Also painted most of the upper carapace, just the black and brass left to detail. The cannon is just test-fitted.
Detail of the missile launcher. The middle deck will be painted more of an olive drab.
Just for fun...I love these photos from an imaginary infantry POV. Still got all that detail to paint...

How are you gonna paint the FW Chaos star?

Post by: ratmkith
@person person - The stonework around the star will be done in greys, the star itself in brass, and the skull in a bone white, with the horns possibly dark brown to black.

SWEET MOTHER OF KHORNE !!!!!!!
Where have I been that I've never seen this thread before today ?!?!!!!
This is the most amazing titan I have ever seen !!! I'm stunned by the way you can take "everyday" bits and cobble them together into something that makes sense to the titan and not look like a bunch of stuck-on bits !!!
I am in awe !!!
As far as trophies or kill markings, how about stringing the main gun barrels of crushed tanks along a chain "necklace" sort of like a cannibal would string finger bones ??

Just a quick update today, got most of the green center platform done, and added the banners. I've been a bit impatient with the painting, so went with simple lettering and chaos icons on the banners.
I want to get the tail added on, but need to finish all the detail on the body first. Still way too much left to paint...

Post by: ratmkith
@ person person - the original plan was to have elaborate Word Bearers iconagraphy and sayings in Latin or something. But didn't have the time so ended up going with the time tested scribbles and chaos stars covered in blood.
@ Ramos Asura and Brother Bartius - haha, I won't rush too much on it, I'll be happy just to have it done before October or so.
@ Lemmingspawn - Thanks, coming from the person who did the awesom Iron Warriors armor, it's a real compliment. The feet and legs have been haunting me since I started this project. Not enough pre-planning unfortunately.
@ FlammingGaunt - I'd love to see the FW version of a Banelord, I'm sure it would put mine to shame...especially after seeing what they did with the Chaos Reaver Titan (I'd kill for the arm they made, but it's on the wrong side compared to mine).

.......slowly but surely. Was able to get the Defiler claw pieces painted, as well as some yellow/black hazard colors onto the cabling.
LOL
Green Gaurdsman 1 fumbles with his las and jester's towards the oncoming titan "hey look at that, they've put yellow and black hazard colours on the power cables"
Vet Gaurdsman 2 pulls his chin strap tight "feck this...."
Gaurdsman 3 1/2 "Urrrr, boss wouldn't it be better if they where on the spikey bits on it's......urrr toe's"
Platoon Comander "SHUT UP i...i need to think..., mmmm right then uuurrr you men wait here, I'll go for help."

Sorry couldn't think of anything more clever for today's update title
I've been focusing on the banner top and cannon arm lately. I discovered that alot of my paints had dried out, so needed to run to the store and pick some miscellaneous colors (including Ultramarine Blue). First up is the wide shot of the crucified Ultramarine, the suggestion to make him blue is greatly appreciated. I think it helps bring out a relatively drab color scheme.
A bit more detailed shot, the Ultramarine icons on the hips are from the Drop Pod icons. I had to soften them up over a match, so not the smoothest job...I'm still painting the details and I'll probably had some damage and scorch marks to cover up the twisted plastic.
Also worked on the Hellstrike Cannon. I need to work up some dark greys for the barrels.
Another shot of the Hellstrike Cannon...
And a couple of general WIP shots of the entire body, lots of nooks and crannies I need to hit with the paint.
That's about it for now, I'll probably have the Battlehead complete next time, and hopefully have the tail attached as well.

No real preference, just figured since it's Chaos, they'd have a natural preference for Imperial Guard and Space Marine victims. And the fact that I don't really have any xenos models to use that I wouldn't have had to buy.
