It has been said many a time before, but the Inquisimunda stuff on this forum is truly brilliant. I can't remember how I found it, but I'm glad I did. Migsula, CMDante and others, thankyou. You have pulled me out of a creative depression and got me excited about modelling again. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks, reading all the great threads and being thoroughly astounded. So I've joined this forum, it being the most packed full of modelling jam I've seen on my travels through the internet, and hope to become a regular poster.
Right, to the Project:
As an artist, I find myself increasingly unable to stick to one project and follow it to conclusion. There almost is never a conclusion in art, and there lies my dilemma. As new and exciting ideas spring forward, my older and larger projects fall by the wayside. When I get near to finishing an army I have found myself advancing in skill and creativeness so much that I feel the need to redo the things already done, or to start anew.
I feel that I need to abandon my set ways of thinking about colour, painting and modelling itself. I am too rigid and organised in my thinking. I need to adopt a freer flow of inspiration and ideas. One of the main aims of this project is to achieve a portrayal of the feeling, mood and story behind my miniatures, rather than perfection of the painting.
The endless visual landscape of 40k holds a position of immense inspiration for me; in particular, the art and literature. Illustration as found in the Witch Hunters codex and Inquisitor rulebook I regard the highest. Artists such as John Blanche and Karl Kopinski are among my favourites. In terms of literature, Dan Abnett is the most influential and inspiring. The rich descriptive language he uses, as well as the depth of his characters are important factors. I particularly find inspiration in the way in which he focuses on the everyday individuals and functioning of the Imperium (as well as its enemies.) There are also many modellers that inspire me greatly. Dave Taylor, Mikael Silvanto (Migsula) and Mark Bedford are chief among them.
I have started a few project logs that I have failed to keep updated recently. As a professional painter/modelmaker, I am currently very busy. This leaves little time for me to explore my own ideas or even finish work on old ones. I am working to better manage my time so that I can work fewer days and have time for myself and my own projects.
I hope this blog/plog becomes a way for me to interact with others in this hobby and get their ideas and thoughts. Good art is never a one-person thing. It’s all about the interaction and combining of ideas and in this I hope everyone feels like they can voice their opinions and interact. It would especially great to get more assistance from those that inspire me. If you think what I’m doing is cool, let me know. There is a certain degree of satisfaction gained when you know that others like your work.
The Details
My latest interests in armies are the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Dark Mechanicus. I have previously done some small forays into these forces but haven’t really achieved anything I am proud of or that really captures the feel of the Mechanicus
Instead of starting off by aiming to make a whole 40k army for each force, my plan is to work on a small warband for each.
Not only will this allow me to really focus on my modelling and painting, it will stop me from getting bored or overwhelmed.
I plan to make the war bands around 10 figures each. As I work on them I will develop their background, names etc and how they relate to my overall story. They all revolve around a Forgeworld of my own creation called Acieris.
Hopefully I will get a chance to design and build a themed gaming table for my war bands of some part of Acieris. At this point I have an idea of it being an abandoned rail yard, possibly leading to a secret underground experimental facility.
The long term plan is to slowly expand the war bands to make larger forces for normal 40k games. This expansion would also link the ongoing story behind them; the attack of Acieris by the forces of chaos, the intervention of the inquisition etc.
One aspect of the modelling that’s worth mentioning; since figures for the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Dark Mechanicus are nearly non-existent, it is obvious that I will need to do a fair amount of scratch-building, converting and sculpting. I am also planning to design, sculpt and mould/cast my own figures for things like praetorians/servitors etc but with my own flavour/take on the generally accepted aesthetic. The fun part will be in thinking, testing making etc. I’m sure there will be some failures and hard work involved, but that’s what it’s all about. Hopefully there will be some happy mistakes and surprises.
Without further ado, here is some long awaited progress:
A WIP of my first assistant Tech Priest. It's really just a practice piece, although it's turned out to be a cool little model.
A WIP Tech-Servitor for my loyal AM warband. I got inspiration from the forge-world ones and all their cool little details and weirdness. Lots of work still to do; arms, details etc. I think the real 40k universe comes out in these cool little gothic dudes.
A Forgeworld Tech-Priest who I painted a few years ago and have ressurected for this project. He might get replaced but for now is serving as a piece to inspire my future sculpting efforts.
That's all for now, sorry for the long rant. I had to get it all out there so I can really get going on this mighty project. I'll be updating soon with some pics of all the stuff I have done so far, as well as my plans for the AM warband and the ideas for conversions involved.
Thanks for reading,
Earl

Hi Inq. Earl
Just wanted to say, these are looking fantastic! I'm particularly fond of the second guy you posted, the one with the half-head. Very nice. I'm going to have to steal that idea for a commission piece I'll be working on next week.
I'm looking forward to seeing the army get some paint on it. Will it all be Dark Mech?
Cheers

Lots of high class creations here. I appreciate the "rant" about your sources of inspiration and the thoughtprocess behind the art. I'd love to see more of that, parallell with the very creative modelling you do.
And warmly welcome to the active participants on Dakka.

Hey man, this is pushing the imagery! Not often we see that!! Lovely work. I like the attention to detail, the sense of scale (which is also one of my own key goals these days), the certain rawness of the ideas, like the lack of upper head for the servitor.
Warm welcome to dakka and very much looking forward to more!

I hear you. I think at times, it's the idea with the kind of depth and gravity - just plain vastness of study and play - that it takes to produce at army scale. I love =I=munda so much, the fact you can go on these creative crazes and move from one thing to the next. And then at times you bump into something like the Legion is to me. A ground where there is so much that you want to make into a vision/take/adventure of your own.

Really great start here, the ad mech conversions in particular really catch my eye. Like Mig's I really love the idea behind the servitor with the "no top of the head look" (south park fans should get that).
In general you are really taking on the spirit of the =I=munda craze and developing the lesser explored imagery of the 40k universe so bravo for that and I look forward to more.
I also know what you mean about fleeting between projects, I'm exactly the same and already I have ideas that are competing with the genestealer cult for attention (curse the new IG book and its cool illustrations!), but thats for another thread!
Glad to have you here as a part of Dakka and really looking forward to seeing where your creativity takes you.

Well, what can I say? What an amazing reception! It really cements my decision to join this forum; everyone is so helpful
Dave - Feel free to use the idea. I noticed you used my idea for the shortened Autocannon barrels with your pact. Very cool.
I'll be sculpting the receptors to the top of the servitors head. I thought, he doesn't need much of a brain, so perhaps that's stored elsewhere.
It won’t be all Dark Mech, I'm hoping to do two equally sized warbands. I am working on the AM warband first and then will try and tackle their evil counterparts. The big stuff I showed is really what's left of previous armies that I kept because it fits with this theme.
Belphegor - The treads on the Praetorian are the actuator tracks from inside an old canon printer. I thought they had nice detail on them that works. Printers are great for cogs, machine bits etc.
Boss_Salvage - the marines are bit of an experiment, I was going to use them as thousand sons. Probably will use them as guards when playing kill team style missions. The idea is that they are made from bits of found/stolen armour and given form by flesh and the scrap code. The devourers were just bits that I thought looked pretty neat, so I went with it.
Migsula - I owe my thanks to you for inspiring me to look at scale and more detail in my minis, rather than just equipping them with gear/bits. I just can't believe there is so much cool stuff in the art and novels that's not a miniature. My goal is to bring as much of it to life as I can. I agree about the fluid approach=I=munda allows. An adventure is much more fun than just a hobby.
CMDante - Thanks, I haven't even seen the new IG codex or read the rules for fear it will draw me into a buying craze and lead me away from this project. I hope to be able to provide regular updates. That's the plan anyway.
Here's a little something I found that might interest you guys:
It's my take on a mobile Dark Mech flesh lab, inside a Baneblade. I built it when the new kit came out, but have never got round to paint it. I want to try a sourced lighting thing but am unsure of quite how to do it justice. Any ideas?

Got a bit more done on my Servitor. Working on the other arm. I've decided it might be best to just have 2 arms on this one rather than 4 like the Death korps one. I asked a friend what I should call it, and she said Jeff. So its now Tech Servitor Jeff Nx01.
I also had an idea for a squad of Skitarii after checking out FW for things. I did a quick photoshop job with some heads from Hortwerth's awesome Skitarii. They are Death Korps of Krieg Grenadiers. With some extra tech details, new heads/hoods and some admech symbols I reckon they make perfect Skitarii. What do you guys think?
I've got here my initial plan for my Adeptus Mechanicus Warband:
Magos
- Witch hunter crusader body
- Enginseer axe and backpack
- Servo skulls and Mechadendrites plus obligatory cabling
Or
Limited Ed. Techmarine in servo harness
- Would need robes and a hood and replace servo arms with Mechadendrites
- Add mechanical parts to face to compliment the bionic eye
- Servo skulls
Assistant
- Henchman with book and flamer
- Sculpt hood and replace =I= symbols with the Insignium Mechanicum
- Replace flamer with fusion cutter
Tech Priest
- Enginseer
- Add Mechadendrites
Protector
- Micro Art Studio Praetorian torso
- Iron hands bionic legs
- Robes and cables
- Half skull half face
Tech Servitor
- My sculpted one (like FW ones)
Heavy Gun Servitor
- Sentinel legs
- Plasma Cannon
- Land Raider and tank accessory sprue sensors
Legio Ferrus marine (Training to be a Techmarine)
- Migsula Style using terminator parts
- Sculpt layered plate Techmarine style armour.
- Axe and backpack/Servo-arms
- Devastator half-machine head
(Need to show that he is almost half way through his training and only has some of his bionics/modifications, not sure how to do this)
Tracked Praetorian
- My scratch built tracks/figure
- Drum fed Heavy Bolter
2 Combat Servitors
- Like Arco-flagellants?
Any help/ideas you guys can give me would be great. I'm particularly confused as what to do for the Magos (got two possible options), and the Combat servitors.
Cheers
Earl

I'd suggest you read Dark Apostle by Anthony Reynolds great Adeptus Mechanicus imagery. The Servitor looks great reminds me a lot of the Centurus Clones from Rackhams Dirz range another good place for inspiration for this stuff I'd say. I'd also suggest going with a brother vs brother idea for the Adeptus and Dark Adeptus making them look very similiar and obviously from the same root. So have almost exactly the same models in bot warbands and paint them at the same time so the differences would be tiny on first inspection but glaring on a closer look.

Llamahead - I like that brother vs brother idea. It could get a bit boring doing similar models though. I'm really hoping that the Dark Mech will be a chance to experiment with some different things, but obviously from the same root in terms of aesthetics. But the idea of them looking similar overall is good, with the subtle hints that all is not normal about the dark ones.
Jabba - Told you printers were awesome! If you can get the motor going it could be very useful. Not sure what voltage/amperage it would go on though. Lots of nice cogs for scenery work though Did you disassemble it or break it with a hammer? I used a hammer, much quicker.
Thanks JB. I've got a bit of commission work to get done this week but I'm going to try and get some more work done on the servitor and start the protector.

More progress, finally.
One thing I must say; it’s really annoying how being an artist means that you want to start new projects all the time.
I've got ideas of building a 1:48 gunship that's like Eisenhorn’s' gun-cutter/serenity for use in an Eisenhorn’s/Ravenor inspired film I'm writing the script for. I'll be doing filming later in the year too. (It won't obviously be 40k, but inspired by the aesthetic and dialogue in the Ravenor novels)
I've taken up landscape oil painting, as my grandfather before me did. It's a really good stress release having a flat canvas rather than fiddly little figures. If model making becomes my work then I can see painting being my hobby. Anyone else like this?
Back to the progress:
First up, I’ve started work on a protector for the Arch Magos. I got the idea from the Mechanicum novel. I’ve used the iron hands bionics bits as they look very cool. He will have a robe and hood.
I’ve had to have a go at making a true scale marine after seeing all the awesome ones on this forum. I’ve decided to make him a Techmarine as a chapter called the Legio Ferrus has it’s fortress Monastery on the same Forgeworld as my warbands and story is based around; Acieris. Lots of cleanup and sculpting to do, but it’s a good start I reckon. True scale marines are just so much more appropriate to the aesthetic of 40k, it almost epitomises what got me into the hobby in the first place.
Lastly, I’ve been doing some tests trying to achieve a rusty steel look on my baneblade. Not sure if I will keep this as the final layer or do some salt/hairspray masking. It’s been interesting trawling the Military modelling forums and checking out the amazing techniques guys like Mig Jimenez and Adam Wilder use. If you haven’t seen the mig productions forums yet, go there. Some of the best modelmakers in the world regularly post there.
Since my airbrush is in storage atm because of flooding problems in my workshop, I’ve tried to see what I can achieve with acrylics and brushes. It’s all just washes, scratches, sponging etc. Hard to photograph but I think it’s turned out well. I’ll end up using some oils and powders for the final rust stains and weathering though. I have discovered though that matte medium is awesome. Great for making washes and juices.
Well, that’s all for now. Hopefully will get some sculpting done soon and can start undercoating stuff. (when it stops hailing.. )
Cheers
Earl

I assume the Arch Magos is still going to get some big robes or something?
14779
Post by: Inquisitor Earl
Warhound123 - I use a putty called epoputty, its similar to procreate. It sets rock hard and can be drilled etc. Better for armour and larger pieces as its really cheap. Made by Alteco; I believe it's for plumbing but it's got a really smooth and fine texture so its great. Greenstuff i've found better for robes, organic pieces etc because of its elasticity.
Malika2 wrote:I assume the Arch Magos is still going to get some big robes or something?
I am leaving the arch Magos till last as I figure it's going to be a full scratch-build. Defiantely lots of robes and bionics but less armour. I've moved away from using the limited ed. techmarine as it's too well known. I want something really unique.
I did that sketch a while back as an idea for a Dark mech Arch Magos. The loyal one would be similar but with an arm rather than a breacher drill, no moving platform and no spikes.

Well I finally got my Traitor Guard army sold and got some work out of the way, which means progress on my warband.
Luckily I got this lot of work done before a niggling problem became apparent. I’ve developed a problem with my clavicle because of constant lifting of my right shoulder to steady my hand when painting. Basically one shoulder is higher than the other. Not cool. It’s painful sometimes but mostly just uncomfortable. I’ve seen a Physiotherapist and have exercises to do. Apparently it’s not too serious and if I sort it out now it won’t be a problem later in life.
Talk about suffering for the hobby...
The good thing is that I’ve been looking at other avenues for employment rather than full time miniature painting. I now have work in architectural modelling, a model railway and doing oil paintings for cafes/local sale etc
Back to the warband, here’s what I’ve got done:
Swapped out the base from the other smaller techpriest for a new guard one. I really like the sculpting and detail and feel there’s not really and point modifying it any further.
More sculpting and detail on my Techmarine. I’ve tried to go for something much like the art. It’s not perfectly proportional (quite tall) and I don’t think it would actually work in terms of human movement but they are genetically engineered after all, plus it looks neat.
Made a comms servitor using a cool witch hunter’s henchman figure. Few details to go. I’m getting really good at doing hoods now. It helps to look at other GW figures’ hoods and use them as a guide.
The henchmen figures are so cool I had to use this one. I’ve seen a few really cool gas-cutters done for other warbands so had to have one. My one also doubles as a lamp for my tech-assistant. I had the idea that he is a researcher and needs the lamp/cutter for his work rifling around in old libraries/data repositories.
More sculpting done on the protector.
A gun servitor based on a micro art studio track unit. My custom tracks haven’t been cast yet and I’ve got other plans for them. The gun arm is magnetised for weapon hot-swapability. I’m really not sure what to put on the other arm. Any ideas guys? A chainsaw/pincer perhaps or another gun?
My favourite bit of work done so far is my heavy gun-servitor. The idea is stolen from one done, I believe, by Dave Taylor. If it is, thanks again Dave. The new sentinel is a neat kit. Lots of cool spare bits to use. I’ve got an idea for a murky puddle on the base, hence the green-stuffed recess.
Lastly, a quick mockup of an engineering control servitor.
This dude was inspired by a creation of Proteius. He’ll be used in the factory complex of my big new project;
I am planning to build a model railway at 1:48 scale and have decided to give it a 40k feel and work it into the abandoned facility board I was thinking about. I find 1:48 works very well with 40k.
I will be scratch building the locos, factory equipment etc. It will hopefully include a rocky mine area, hilly scrubland and the factory complex built into a rocky promontory. I want it to have a mad max/rusty/grimy/damp/Mechanicus feel. It’s combining elements of the Mechanicus with the coal industry of 1920/30’s west coast of New Zealand (which I have an interest in.)
That’s all for now folks. Any ideas, comments you have, please let me know. I probably won’t get much more work done on the warband for a week or so but will be busy designing the railway layout. I’ll be sure to update.
Cheers
Earl

Ok! That Protector looks awesome!
I was thinking of some weirder Servitors, ones who would only be armed with bolters/autoguns/etc but that the barrel would come out of their mouths. They would walk hunched over (plastic Ghoul models) and with the ammo feed implanted into their backs. Very biomechanical, very Giger...very disturbing!
By the way, you and The Damned Artificer should exchange ideas, he is working on an Admech force as well, over at Warseer (link to blog)

Thanks Malika2.
I am loving your idea for weird gun servitors. I hadn't thought of doing it that way. I've got some bloodletters that i could probably use the bodies from. It may be quicker to just sculpt the bodies myself, i've got plenty of putty. Giger is definately a good inspiration, especially for when I get to the Dark side of things.
@ the damned artificer, I just checked out your blog. It's all awesome; The skitarii and quadruped are my favs, and the wee spiders. If I end up making an army, i'd like to use some of your ideas for sure.
My bases are inspired by Migsula's work. Mostly bits off of 1:35 tanks. It's simple yet very effective. Add texture with modelling paste (pebeo/vallejo) and you have rust and dirt build-up.
I will message you very soon and we can exchange ideas.

I can't believe it's been nearly six months since I last updated this project.
The urge to finish it still exists; it's just been something that I've wanted to do but never got around to it. Real life, work (commission painting) etc have got in the way of my own modelling. I've also spent a lot of time exploring other model making avenues such as model railways. That sent me on a research mission, consuming vast amounts of information and learning many new things. In the end, railways are all too restrictive and the bulk of the local people I’ve met that are in to modelling trains are very close-minded. I've now come back to science fiction modelling; it’s something about the mystery and endless creativity it allows.
Some great artists and models I have found on my journeys, hopefully you'll find them interesting:

Here is a little thing I made a couple of months ago from some bits that were lying around. Just started painting it a few days ago. It's not the cleanest paint job but I don't know if I really care because it was so fun to put together and paint. I've done all the conversion work for my warband as seen before, now I am going to undercoat and finally get some paint on them!
I've got this desire to make some sort of large mecha/tank/aircraft with all sort of 1:35 tank parts, 40k bits etc, just like some of the wondrous examples in the links above. It's hard to know what to do though as I have so many ideas. I even had the idea of making a 40k scale gun cutter. In proper scale it would be around 1:48.
Anyone got any advice for me? Should I take the plunge and make a gun-cutter? I am reminded of a quote by Cecil Beaton: "Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slave of the ordinary. It certainly would be daring to make, and would make a great centrepiece for my Weta Workshop portfolio.

Oh no, there goes another great idea that I want to build. The valk with some big rotors instead of wings would indeed look very neat. I'll add that to the list of things I could build. There are quite a few options, just have to narrow it down to things that are really different and will keep me entertained.

Utterly awesome if your still interested in doing the railway stuff the WW1 trench railway systems would be a great source of inspiration. That flying servitor is a brilliant concept. I've got to admit I don't really see Adeptus Mechanicus tanks even Dark Adeptus as rusty I believe they'd spend hours on cleaning and maintenance on these hallowed shrines (either those of the Emperor or the Dark Gods) I can just see them forcing serfs out of the Baneblade to clean it in the middle of a firefight!

Llama - I see true ad-mech as a massively varied organisation. I am with you in that they probably keep their stuff in good condition, though from lots of stuff i've read, they tend to just keep piling on the unguents and sacred oils without cleaning it off first.
I like the idea that maintenance isn't a very high priority with my Adeptus Mechanicus stuff. The Dark Mechanicus stuff even more so. It's pretty much just because I love to model rusty, worn and old things.
I am still very keen to model some sort of abandoned Mechanicus facility, perhaps as a diorama. The WW1 trench railways are certainly inspiring, as are some of the Feldbahn railways in Europe.
I've got a bit of an updated on the other side of the project. I don't think i'll ever make an army for each side but more a collection of related things that i like to model/paint.
I just had an urge to put some paint on my converted Dark echanicus baneblade. It's been sitting here for years and what with all the new military modelling techniques I've learned, it's time to do something.
I am going to prepare a tutorial on tank painting and weathering using acrylic paints. I've found many great techniques out there but most of them use various oil paints, pigments, airbrushes etc. I want to see if it's possible to create great effects with what we already use.
Here are some test teaser shots:

Hey, I was looking for some inspiration and actually found pics of Evan's stuff on google. That lead me to his blog and that (after an e-mail) lead me back to Dakka. I just wanted to bump this thread for 3 reasons...1. To say what great work this is. 2. To give others the opportunity to see this 3. To hopefully give Evan enough of a kick in the butt to keep working on this incredible project.

Wow, really great stuff that really captures the gritty gothic part of 40k which i fell in love with and is so often lost
one suggestion: disuise the iron hands leg armour on the protector... maybesome thing more angular, as the regular mark is quite recongisable as space marine
Great work though

I thank all of you for your praise. I am as ever keen to work on this project but being a commission painter, it does leave me very tired of models. I am moving into other fields of modelmaking soon so perhaps I will get the chance to work more on these models.
ender502, consider my butt kicked.
Have a Dark angels army to assembled and undercoat in the next few days then I will do a video tutorial on my weathering tips and experiments. I am also working on a little display base for the warband so will get some pics of that.
Very soon I will be moulding and casting the praetorian track units for sale. I am looking into other custom parts to help people achieve that gothic-tech look in their armies. Any ideas on what you would like?

Post by: Llamahead
Bionic limbs mainly although heads would be good, A challenge would be to scale them so they are suitable for a Marine/SoB arm or a Guard Power Fist. I'd also like tech lights and cogitator unit bits probably based around turning the Empire Wizard or other similiar models into a techpriest. Mechachendrites would be a must for this. Another useful area would be sights and techy bits....
14779
Post by: Inquisitor Earl
From what you guys have mentioned as well as other peoples difficulties when doing mechanicus themed models I'm looking at these parts as my first releases:
Bionic arms to fit cadians etc
Bionic legs
Tech accessories - tools, lights, cogitator.
Hooded heads to fit cadians etc
Robed legs to fit cadians
Praetorian Track units
Servo arms.
I am looking at selling bits separately, in packs and in sets to make something like a techpriest. I would like to do some custom servitors and Techpriest as a box set.
Bits would either be resin or white metal, depending on what is needed for strength. These should be ready in a few months.
If anyone has more suggestions, let me know. If you know of someone who does Mechanicus let them know as this will only be a sucessful venture if there are enough customers to sustain production.

Been a few months since I've done anything with my Mechanicus project.
I recently started taking a class at my old primary school teaching Year 8's (11/12/13 years old) to paint and make 40K terrain. They are really into it and are more knowledgable of the rules than me! I took some of my models along to show them and they have encouraged me to get going again. They reckon it's very cool that I am trying to make models of things that haven't been done by GW.
So whilst working on MajorTom's genestealer cultists the other day, I worked a bit on a prototype for a Skitarii Hypastist. I really like what the Hoff did over on Warseer with his Skitarii but I also like the Forgeworld Titan crew minis with their one piece shoulder armour. This is what I ended up with:
I'm looking at moulding and casting what I need for a squad but i'm not sure If they really capture the atmosphere of what Skitarii would be. Oh well, plenty of greenstuff to play with so I'll do some more concepts. I want to do a few hooded heads with filter masks and bionic eyes. A couple other leg styles are needed too.
I still plan to make a range of minis and parts but can't manufacture them until I get hold of a pressure pot for casting and unfortunately in NZ they are expensive.
Any opinions? I feel the Mechanicus is something that has great potential and a visually compelling aesthetic and atmosphere. It's just a matter of capturing it.

Post by: Maj.Winters
I have had great success casting without a pressure pot. Granted I would love to use one if I could but like you said, getting a setup can run into the 1,000s of dollars range.
I just do an injection mould using medical syringes without any needle. It really reduces any air in the mould. Then just tap the mould or put it on a dryer to shake out bubbles. After a few tries I learned better vent and layout techniques that keep the bubbles to a minimum.

the body is absolutely amazing, but i feel over 50% of the heads should be hooded. Also, while the helmet looks cool and techy, i see Mechanicus as more integrated with technology. Perhaps you could do bionic implants?
I'd have to agree that while cool and futuristic, it doen't really scream Hypaspist to me. (still awesome though)
Maybe a Mechanicus paintjob would tie everything together?
good job though!!
22687
Post by: MajorTom11
Looks awesome so far man, as expected. I agree with the hooded comments, but at the same time, some bare headed ones with tons and tons of wires coming out the back would look awesome too. To me, Skitaari should site somewhere between a kasrkin and a servitor, I think you have the uniform and organics down pat, now its time to dirty them up and get some cybernetics popping out and breaking the symmetry!
Oh, and Evan, I honestly think you should make the investment in casting equipment, I honestly believe that you could make some money with it, certainly enough to make pay for the equipment at bare minimum. Send over an e-mail and let me know what would be involved getting you set-up.
Cheers!

I would love to have a chance to purchase some of your work. If it helps to get the ball rolling, I think there are a lot of people in this community that would want some bits, which would help with the over head coast of your casting equipment. However this isn't completely legal, you would want to make sure that you didn't have any logos on your bits. I'm not sure if GW can claim the Aquila (the two headed eagle), because I think the Free Masons or Albania might have something to say about that, although they may own that exact depiction. But I'm pretty sure that they made the skull and cog Mechanicus symbol so it's their Intellectual property. You, however have every right to make your own pieces of course. I find there to be a serious lack of space or void capable models. It drives me insane that this multi-verse is rife with space travel, but you can't buy
a human miniature that could last more then one hour in a void (not counting SM). The closest that I have found are the elysian drop troops, but those are respirators. That means that they are safe from space debris but have no Oxygen supply. Anyway that's just what I'm looking for. This game needs more human armor, bionics and, re-breathers or respirators. Also there is no doubt in my mind that some female Imperial guard bits would sell a lot!

That guy is lovely but does not scream "mechanicus" to me...too clean somehow.
Sign me up if you are making mechanicus themed parts....especially the tracked monstrosity. Lovely work.
A small bit of advice about the mechanicus skiritii... I think you should go the "conversion pack route" rather than with whole models. Keep heads (hooded), robot arms w/ weapons, and other bionic bits seperate. First, this would allow more specific customization by customers. Second, you wouldn't have resources committed to a single large thing that may or may not sell.
Glad to see you back on this..though my wallet is not.

Agree with the above, the 'Iron brotherhood' models recently released are nice, but as single piece metal mini's, I found them extremely dissapointing. Modern mini buyers have come to expect plastic kits for troops that are massively customizable, I don't think many people are interested in unique models anymore unless they are characters, or very low model squads choices.

I have to agree with what has been said; that figure just doesn't capture the Skitarri image for me. It almost says imperial cruiser boarding party seargent or something. I'll find a use for it somewhere.
Hoods are a must and i like the idea of heads with wires etc. It's just hard to cast those sorts of things.
Meatshield, I admit that it would be illegal to sell copies of any part from GW and am pretty sure you are right in the case of the skull and cog symbol.
I'll just have to do without those but I can be creative with other forms that do carry across the mechanicus feel.
There certainly is a lack of good human figures. I'm thinking of all the mundane dudes like boarding parties, guys in void suits and workers in factories and on ships. I'll put human armor, bionics and re-breathers on my to-do list.
ender502, you have got it right, conversion packs are the way to go. Whole figures take a lot of work too so it's only logical to do parts. It's also much easier to mould and cast parts. The only reason I havent done so with the tracked unit is that it will involve good mould planning to do it right.
I'll have to get MajorToms models done before I seriously focus on production but I'll do some sketches beforehand and get everyones input.

I personally must say single models, metal or otherwise, appeal if they are to my liking. But of course, I look across a whole lot of ranges and have yet to do much actual ordering, Mind you, this'll be for a special force of mine, but there's still plenty of value to that in great quantities of variation. Elsewise, customization packs and freeform variants are the way to go. Whatever you do, just do it, lol, perhaps

Just made a big bits order on ebay. Lots of neat things coming. I have also sculpted a new praetorian to be cast and have converted a valkyrie to be a UAV.
I have also got hold of bits to make 5 of these:
Not sure what to use them as though. Any ideas? Automatically Appended Next Post: Here is the Valkyrie at the moment. Still some detail work and gap filing to be done. Must also decide on weaponry:

Post by: Inquisitor Earl
I've spent about $300 on bits over the last month or so. Everything is starting to arrive and I'm getting most excited about this project. Thanks to eBay and Bitz Barn I have some great pieces for my conversions.
My army will feature 3 dreadknights which will be modelled as Myrmidon assaullt engines.
Work is also progressing on my brass etch symbol and detail set that will be avaliable for sale.
One aspect that is perplexing me is what to do for my Skitarii. I quite like the Forgeworld grenadiers as a base but they seem a bit sterile. Everything I read about Skitarii describes them as either quite feral/outlandish or very well equipped. Some are even quite ornate.
Since I will only have 1 squad for now and they represent the Magos' personal bodyguard I imagine they would be equipped to his specifications. Perhaps he likes his troops ornate? That's why I am considering using Vostroyans.
I've always loved the models minus the hats and i prefer metal to resin. Only problem is finding them for sale.
What do you guys think of these concepts:

I love your stuff can't wait to see it painted. I know how you feel about being an artist and having the problem of too many projects to finish... 40k is one such diversion for me.
For Skitarii you should check out Wargames Factory, their greatcoat troopers. They have great faces/helmets and they look beefier than your concepts. They are good shock troops nicely priced the forgeworld ones are overpriced and look like pussys. If you want to make Not only that but you could do a large number with little conversion work and concentrate elsewhere to get your project done.
Skitarii are not necessarily feral and ornate. I think you are describing them as in Titanicus but that is for one particular Titan Legio Invicta, in reality all skitarii are like private armies, they are vastly different. The one common thing amongst them would probably that they are better equipped than guard and have more toys.
I've also had success trying to do Obliterator type stuff (check out my blog http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/394107.page) using a Tube Tool, you should definitely check it out at masq-mini.com.

Well it looks like I won't have too much trouble getting some Vostroyans and they're much cheaper than FW DKK. I don't really want to work with resin if I can help it after the work done on a Krieg army commission.
IronBars, that valk is an inspiration. I've made my homage to it and you can see the start up the page.
Those Wargames factory models would be great if you want a lot of troopers. I'm very picky when it comes to detail and styling so Vostroyans are a definite must. I'd love to see what Jes Goodwin could do with the AdMech imagery. Hopefully one day they will get a codex and cool plastics.
You are right though, Skitarii are incredibly varied. I'm going with the idea that my Magos like incorporating some more stylistic aspects to his troops, hence the gothic armour, chainmail and details of the Vostroyans. They'll get lots of mods in terms of bionics etc though.
I am currently working on a couple of Chimeras using the Manticore cockpit with scratch built compartments. Also have 3 Dreadknights/Myrmidon engines on the go but am waiting on the last shipment of bits before I can really get going.
Work is progressing on the brass etch set and finishing up the masters for the praetorians. They will be cast up and avaliable for sale before the end of the year, along with a few other things.

Yeah those Vostroyans do look like they would be good Skitarii, as long as they are converted with more bionics. They got the robes at least. Will you be keeping their mustache?
Sounds like you are going the way of a more feudal mechanicum world, if you got knights and a gothic, chainmail style. The idea is that it is a lesser feral world in a subsystem of some forge world, ruled by knights that walk around in their mech suits and oppress their serfs who are basically at a medieval tech level. Or not. But it does give the possibility of an army with a lot of character, you can pretty much make up anything you want.
I'm looking forwards to seeing those brass etch.

Between working on a chaos army commission and other work, I managed to get a little work done.
This is the start of a Chimera. I used the Manticore front as it looks neat. Scratchbuilt compartment. The multi-laser arrangement is a mock-up. Not sure about that yet. Lots of rivets and details yet to add, plus finish the other one.
I got 2 Russes for a very cheap price and have decided to magnetise the turrets. Really simple. Just cut off the pegs and drill out holes in the gun base and put magnets in the turret where the pegs would fit. I used 3mm x 2mm high strength ones and they work great.
All of my bits orders have arrived safely though I am finding it increasingly hard to restrain myself from buying more. This is my current lot:
Includes: 4 Dreadknights, 2 Russes, 2 Chimerae, a Stormraven, 2x Vostroyan squad, 3x Bastion upgrade sprue, Wych bodies for assassins, land speeder typhoon launchers for more flying servitors, lots of guns and sensor things, plus other cool techy and worky GW bits. Total around $360 US.
Hopefully I'll be able to get more done soon. I've also been working on the brass etch drawings and they are very near completion.

A really great project, really exciting stuff. I have a few marines with some added spikes from the old dark eldar sprue that I have no use for, though a small group along the lines of the Dark Mechanicus would be so awesome! Love the true scale marine and the Protector the most.

Wow... You were born to do mechanics dude... I am especially happy to see you finished up that half done servitor with all the headwires I always loved!
Don't let this go dude, keep at it and finish strong, your fans demand it!

Thanks guys. I'm glad you like it. I'm having so much fun doing this stuff. It's the army I've always wanted to do.

Thanks Migs, It was partly seeing your new work that got me inspired to get going again. I think i'm going to get everything assembled and converted first, though I will do some test models. After seeing John Blanche's stuff on your blog, I really want to portray his painterly style on my army but i'm not sure how yet.
That painting sums up the look I'm going for, both in terms of the conversions and sculpting I want to do, and the painting.
Thanks Tom. I kinda feel like this is what I am supposed to do. My aim is to get it all done and take it to Games Day over in Australia next year. Hopefully enter some of the models into golden demon too, not that I'm going to try and make them perfect.
I'm currently building 4 more of those drone things based on the landspeeder typhoon rockets. They are really fiddly things to assemble.

Isnt the Art of Warhammer 40,000 an absolutely amazing book? Essential textbook for doing this stuff!

I've never actually had the chance to see or purchase any of the art books. They've always been too pricy. I think I'll have to get The Emperor's Will though.

I think you are referring to the Typhoon missile launchers used as engines/exhausts.

I'll get on to that. I have actually made a start on 4 more of them to round out the squad. I'm going to use them as sentinels and give them magnets so I can interchange the weapons. I'm glad you like the conversion. I think it's one of my better moments of inspiration. I was just playing around with bits and it all came together.
I've been a bit distracted by the idea of playing Adeptus Titanicus (the orignal game), and Battlefleet Gothic. Both are awesome games and I'm telling myself I'm not going off schedule as they are mechanicus too. I've ordered 4 Forgeworld Warhounds and a Warlord to start with and am just sorting out what to get to equip my Mechanicus fleet with for BFG.

To make a suit of armor for this guy, what is your preferred plasticard thickness? (answer in metrics please) 0.2, 0.3 or 0.5 ?
