Thanks guys, I'm beginning to have some fun.
I think this may be the first guys brother. This is another mini that has been sitting on my desk forever it seems, so I finished him up to get rid of him. And again another Chaos Knight that I at first really did not like, but on the CSM its actually quite creepy looking. This one has the cooler looking backpack.

I only have one thing...
you ARE really good at sculpting with greenstuff...
so why give them all essentially the same pose??
a little surgery and you can give them all such dynamic poses to go with their rotting but battle hardened glory...
top notch work for papa nurgle so far though...
keep it up!

Thanks for the kind words guys, more to follow.
@Sinism: I understand what you are saying, these are just the first few I have had sitting on my desk forever it feels like anyways. I'm grabbing just randomly and building. I really have no plans for an army right at the moment. Some of these I will keep, some of these I will definitely get rid of, some I will definitely paint. There are many more to follow, I'll probably change up and sprinkle in some fantasy also once and awhile, but I'm big into chaos and such.
And not everything will have Nurgle influence, expect Khorne to show sooner or later, and possibly Slaanesh, maybe even a Tzeentch model.

Do you have any special techinque on the tabards and cloth, or is that just experience?
It is very impressive greenstuff work, I like the kitbashing.
1602
Post by: PsychosisPC
Its definitely practice and experience, but the only way to do it is just that. I do have some tips and general methods, there is a whole variety of ways to achieve this.
The cloth I typically do in a couple of steps or couple of different methods. Sometimes it works better to sculpt the cloth on the miniature, sometimes sculpt it over a support mounted on the model, sometimes it works better to sculpt the piece of cloth on a piece of plastic foil/wrapper.
If you use the wrapper method use a little bit of water to dampen the wrapper, the reason for this is so that you can remove it prior to the putty curing (Although sometimes you may not want to). If you use a lot of water you can trap air bubbles and water bubbles between the putty and wrapper, that's no good for most applications. Smooth your putty using a smooth surface on side and colour shapers or sculpting tools with metal spatulas/spoon shaped ends. Sharpen the edges of the putty with the knife end of your sculpting tool. With the wrapper method on large pieces of cloth or capes, I will allow the piece to cure 5-10 minutes leaving it on the wrapper, then apply the piece directly to the model, by holding the wrapper. Coax gentle bends in the cape using the foil wrapper. I have even used tape to hold the foil in place while the putty is curing. After the putty is cured, gently peel off the foil. Tattered edges, use an Xacto or toothpick or straight pin.
I'll use a dull X-acto to do the the tattered edges by first cutting out a wedge of putty and the then use it to coax the putty into shape. For the holes I'll use a tooth pick like tool and gently poke the hole then move the tool around in the hole a little to make the torn hole.

Back to some fantasy. Some WIP shots of the hand weapon shield Marauder unit and finished models of the ones shown a bit earlier. Decided to mix pretty much all of the lines of chaos along with an ogre for filler. The centaur is going to be replaced with a centaur based on the newer plastic chaos knights, I just haven't gotten around to sculpting the torso for that yet.
This unit will be joined with a flail unit that is pretty much done including paint, which I'll show some of the WIPs of soon. Then a maruader Khorne great weapon unit, along with some warriors and knights and marauder horse, chariots, hounds, and such.

The Balrog head is so strongly Lord of the Rings imagery... Maybe resculpt parts of it or swap with another head altogether? Then you'd have such a unique and wonderful conversion that looks totally yours.

Thanks for the kind words.
As to the head, I did this conversion as a commission job, where he really did not want me to change up the pose or head. I acutally kind of like the head myself, but I can understand that it looks quite LotR.
If I did this model for my own, it would have seen alot more carnage and probably different wings as the detail on them are not as good as the rest of the model. But all in all its a nice model, but has huge gaps, not that there isn't real problems with the regular BT.
And if you are wondering what my BT looks like it:
I updated the model, trying to rid it of all of the old stuff as much as possible, and changed the position of the legs, gave it a neck, added new symbols, skulls to the wings, armor, a neck, new hair, a new tabard that uses a skull belt buckle that I sculpted and the chains from the 40k Termie Lord.
If you want to see the face of evil, well here it is:
And the rest of my Khorne Legion:

Armor Plating
Tools Used: Xacto knife, various metal sculpting tools, tooth picks, needles, colour shapers (primarily Royal Sovereign Size 0, for beginners I recommend the Firm), Ball Burnisher/Stylus, Mechanical Pencil, Thin Wall Metal Tubing
The picture below shows the various tools I use:
1 – Large Spoon Spatula: I use this for smoothing larger plate areas. Turned on
its edge works great for smoothing out the edges of your plates.
2 – Firm Round taper point. I use this for getting into all of those really tight areas and for smooth curved concave surfaces.
3 – Cup Round. I use this one for general smoothing. Flat for smoothing plates and convex surfaces. Round for concave surfaces and for round raised edges.
4 – Ball Burnisher / Stylus. I use this primarily for chainmail, but also for make holes in putty plates. Has too ball sizes. I also use this for denting and making the ball-peened hammer type look on the plates.
5 – Flat Chisel. General Smoothing. Square raised edges. Smoothing out plate edges.
6 – Metal Tooth Pick Hook. The point is like the Stylus. The bend kind of works like the Round Taper and Cup Round, but much finer than both and moves the putty much better.
7 – Mechanical Pencil. Used for recessed rivets and normal rivets when coupled with an xacto.
8 – Cup Chisel, Soft. When you really need a soft touch. These are the work horses for the way I make the raised edges on the armor.
9 – Cup Chisel, Firm. When you can use a slightly firmer touch. These are the work horses for the way I make the raised edges on the armor.
a – Knife on one end and long narrow spoon of uniform width.
b - Normal style knife, spoon spatula Sculpting tool. When you need to really move the putty. These are the work horses for the way I make the raised edges on the armor. The knife end used for smoothing the edges of the plates.
c - Normal style knife, spoon spatula Sculpting tool, but larger than b.
Materials Used: Brownstuff ( BS), or Greenstuff ( GS), Water.
General Notes, The More Common Putties
Greenstuff (also known as Kneadatite Blue-Yellow)
It is the most common putty you see used. It will cure solid, but will retain some flexibility. Very similar to a hard rubber. It strength is that it is excellent for making organic shapes. Its weakness is that it does not hold well for sharp edges. If you want really sharp edges, use your Xacto Knife and cut those edges after the GS has cured. GS can easily be cut once cured. GS does not take well to sanding or filing, but that does not mean you cannot smooth it out after it has cured. To smooth it after it is cured, use a sharp razor blade and gently shave the GS with the edge of the blade. Holds detail very well. Semi-sticky like gum in the early stages of curing, after being mixed.
Brownstuff (also known as Kneadatite Brown-Aluminum)
BS is a hard putty that combines a bit of flexibility with the ability to be sanded and filed into sharp edges. It cures harder than GS, and is more brittle. BS is often used for making mechanical looking parts or other metal parts like sword blades. I have also found that BS is much easier to get smooth before its cured than GS. Does not work as well as GS when sculpting more organic looking stuff, better suited for mechanical things.
Apoxie-Sculp
Apoxie-sculp is a self-hardening synthetic clay that combines the features and benefits of clay with those of epoxy. Apoxie sculp will be very soft when mixed, and has a much longer working time than BS or GS and takes a couple hours to really start stiffening. Once cured it becomes rock like. It can take sanding and filing. Its very strong and rigid. However, it does not take detail very well in my opinion.
Milliput
Milliput is an epoxy putty that cures hard. Once fully cured Milliput can be machined, drilled, tapped, turned, filed, sawn, sanded, but can be brittle.
Putty Mixing / Curing
After mixing the GS or BS putty, it will be soft and pliable. You will have about 20-30 minutes where it is very soft. This is a good time for basic shapes. After the first 20 minutes the putty will start showing more rubbery characteristics and begin to harden. Most epoxy putties, also depends on the amount of the hardener you use, will have about 1-1.5 hours of working time before it is too hard to work anymore. Epoxy putty will typically cure fully in about 24 hours.
General Tips for Armor Plates
- Recommend using BS, but GS works fine. BS is more forgiving in getting smooth plates, especially if you are new to using putty.
- Sharp edges are very critical to make it look right.
- To make raised edges very gently use your spatula/spoon tool, ball burnisher, or my personal favorites the chisel pointed colour shapers.
- For recessed rivets use a mechanical pencil without the lead in them and simply jab the putty as it's curing with the metal tubing.
- Plastic Rod Rivet method. Use your Xacto to shave off a thin layer of plastic rod. Place a tiny drop of glue on the model where you want the rivet and put the thin layer of the plastic rod over the glue.
- For raised rivets, allow the putty armor to cure (it helps if you put a little tiny divot in the putty where the rivet is going), flatten a small ball of putty over the armor, then use the tubing and press it into the flattened piece of putt. Remove the excess putty and allow it to cure. This is a very delicate rivet, not durable at all unless it is sealed in place somehow. I recommend the recessed rivet for use with your armies and things that get played with, its much more durable and gets the idea across easily.
Next time we begin the correcting of the posture of some Bloodletters on our way to making the armor plating.

Posture and Armor Plating Part 2
In this post we'll correct the posture of the bloodletter and see some general gap filling and smoothing tips on GS work.
Stage 1
We’ll cut the torso at the waist, straighten it out matching the back groove where the spine piece goes. Pin the two pieces back together with using some pin material and a pin vise.
Fill the gap with GS and smooth it out a little, one of the quickest ways to smooth it out is by simply dragging your finger gently across the GS. Put a little water or lotion on prior to doing that. The goal is not just too smooth it out, but also to blend it in to get a smooth transition from plastic to GS.
Stage 2
Allow stage 1 to cure for awhile. In this stage we want to make the area we created in stage one to look like it has abdominal muscles. Roll out a small sausage of GS, and place it approximately where shown on the pic below.
Blend the edges of the sausage into to the torso with fingers and/or sculpting tools. If I use tools I’m generally using the round cup chisel or the tapered round to do the blending. Once the edges of the sausage is blended into the torso I'll use the round cup chisel to do some general correcting of the sausage to rid it of any possible ridges.
Below you see me blending in the GS with the tapered round.
The result of the blending:
Now we need to define the abdominal muscle, again I'll use the tapered round and gently add an indentation down the center.
Automatically Appended Next Post: And the final product, shown below. Allow this to cure a little and do the next set of abdominal muscles.
Next post, we're ready for the actual armor plating of the miniatures, but the thing to take out of this how to smooth out the GS, which is critical to making armor plates.

Post by: PsychosisPC
Stage 3
Alright, let’s do some armor plates. Here we have a set of bloodletter legs, I’ve added a sheet of GS to the legs in the general shape that I want on the leg, and smoothed it out with my fingers. Again use water and/or lotion on your fingers to smooth out the GS.
Next shape up the armor plate edges with the knife end of your sculpting tool. Done right this will give you a fairly sharp edge.
Smooth out the plate. In this picture you see me using the round cup smoothing out the GS. This is a cool picture, as you can actually see the water between the cup and the GS, as I was lifting the tool to back up and smooth an area out.
You could also use the spoon/spatula shaped end of your sculpting tool to do this, like what I am doing on this arm.
At this point I want to make the plate on the leg into several plates, so I’m using the firm flat chisel point to make raised edges for what will be overlapping plates.
Now back to the arm. I’m not making a number of plates, but I am using the same technique to make raised edges around the perimeter of the plate. In this picture I am gently denting the plate with the cup chisel. I do this by pushing edge in and then gently drag it back to smooth the central area. Again we are doing this after we got the plate completely smooth and the edge defined.
Some more coming up very soon.

It is a pretty straight forward technique. I've shown this technique to numerous people in about 10 minutes, and have them sculpting the basics in no time. You can make it as difficult as you want, or as simple as you want. My advice is that if you are having trouble with metal tools, it probably means you need a softer touch, and try the colour shapers, they are more forgiving while you are learning to get that right touch. If you have trouble getting green stuff smooth, get more patience and if that doesn't work try brownstuff for awhile, again its more forgiving, and sandable.

Sometime simple and subtle conversions can make things very different, this one of those cases where you just put a little GS in the neck socket to accommodate a fantasy beastman head, rotate the sword arm and do a little ripped cloth, mixed with some other subtle parts and conversions and you get a figure that looks like we have below, something very quick, but yet different:

Chaos Vehicle sprues
------------------------------------------------------
A long time ago I built some chaos trolls for my beastmen army. I absolutely hated the models after I finished them, and they were quickly thrown out of the army.
When the spawn kit came out I built a couple and had all kinds of pieces left over and decided to strip the trolls down and see what I could do with them. The first turned out pretty cool.
This is the second one, chaos troll converted into chaos spawn. Now there was a bit of dremel work done grinding down a bunch a things, and a bit of GS work done to blend all of the parts to make a nasty looking bug. Now I really like the chaos trolls as chaos spawns, much better.
And another chaos spacemarine like the first couple of word bearer styled ones, no chaos warriors helmet on this one.

When I started playing beastmen, I knew right away that did not like the looks of the old minotaur and doombull models, but I never really got around to finishing a Doombull that I was happy with while getting the army ready to play some tournaments. I started this a new Doombull conversion for my Khorne beastmen about 2 years ago, and never finished the modeling until now. It matches up pretty much all of my minotaurs and first Doombull, being Khorne themed and have long flowing hair.
I decided to arm him with a shield, give him neck, and get rid of those hideous feet. Originally I planned to give him a sword, but never got around to making one. Here's the final look of the model:

Several WIPs in this update, mostly what is on my table in various stages.
First up a Predator, I loved the movie, this thing has been on my desk for a couple years, so I decided its time to work on it a little bit. Not sure what I'll do for a weapon in the right hand yet.
And another incomplete movie icon in space marine armor, I'll let you figure it out, a No-Prize to the winner who guesses correctly.
I won't tell you which head it is. Also playing a bit with ProCreate on the Bloodletter, very nice putty.
Then some work on a nurgle marine, not sure what to do for a head at the moment:
On the Fantasy front a Chaos Knight of the Tzeentch variety. The build up on the back is for supporting a cape that I will add in the near future. One thing I'm finding with the knights is that there is so much detail on them that it makes it kind of hard to convert them. Sometimes simple is better, but I have a plan up my sleeve for my own army in the near future.

As to the Predator there'll certainly be more on him. I just need to come up with some ideas on what to do weapon-wise in the right hand. Suggestions are welcome, my bitz box is deep. I'm kind of leaning towards Marauder Horseman spear or Chaos Knight lance.

I think the Lightning Claw might be a bit too big for the predator. What about a regular terminator arm with a couple blades on instead? As for his right arm, I think a marauder spear would be ace.

Been side-tracked a bit building many chaos related projects some for fun, some for commission, some for me. Most for commission lately.
Here are some of my latest bloodletters these are going to be for a 40k army, simillar to the ones in my fantasy army and from the armor tutorial. Making up 40 of these guys, here are the first of many:

I've recently learned some things about Nurgle. I've been modeling quite a bit of it lately, and an opportunity came up to work with Forgeworld's Nurgle Ogryn. You can always learn somethings by trying a bit different style. The trick was to make it look like the Forgeworld style in this case. So...convert a 40k Nurgle Ogryn to a Fantasy Beast of Nurgle, get rid of the techno stuff, here is the first Beast of Nurgle conversion:

Well I'm back to working on some of my own stuff for a little bit, along with finishing up some commission work. So I'm resurrecting my Warriors of Chaos - Mutant Marauders, I'm going to expand the army to full 2000 to 2250 pts. One unit of the marauders is shown back on page two, with some of the individual models shown on page 1. I have since dumped that centaur champion, but the rest of the unit stayed pretty much the same.
So far I have built and painted two units of marauders, a champion, a sorcerer on foot, two chariots, and two spawn.
The expansion will play off of that starting with the Heroes: This is the first one a nurgle sorcerer in WIP form. Still need to work on the staff, to make it a bit more nurgly. And I will be returning to the centaur idea with the new chaos knight horses, the plan of which to make some torso blanks and cast them.
Painted pics of the existing stuff to come.

Post by: PsychosisPC
I'm still struggling with what I want to do with the staff on the nurgle sorcerer, so ideas are welcome. I won't being using the original one.
So moving onto the next hero for my WoC army is going to be a hero on Tzeentch disc that I'm scratch building. Here's the disc so far.

Now I have had these guys done for a bit, and this will give some idea of where I'm going with them color scheme-wise, and I'm still adding models to them, so they are not completely done, but getting there. Originally these guys got there start as an Adepticon team effort with fellow Grumpy Old Coot, Mike Butcher, we went to Adepticon with a Chaos Mortals and Ogre army. Each half had to be 1000 pts apiece with one lord between the two armies. The centaur was my Tzeentch Aspiring champion and general at the time prior to the new chaos knights, and has since been retired.

The disco hero. I'm torn on the hero at the moment, haven't played this army enough to decide what I want on the disc. So instead of making two discs, I'm going to magnetize the hero's arm giving him either a sorcerer staff or a flail to make him str 7 and an exalted hero.
This is really a true kit bash so far using parts from all over the place. I think it will be a very dynamic looking figure riding this ominous disc that I'm working on.
The head and cape are from the 40k Terminator Lord kit, a lot of awesome bitz in that kit, as G-M shown on the link. I'll be using more bits from there. The staff will be used with a magnetized arm.
The little exhaust like thingies may either get cut off and covered up or be used for some trophy back banner things. We'll see. I plan to make something to sort of cover the left shoulded joint so the seam between arm and torso is bit camouflaged.

Thanks, the blues are something I have done for a very long time. My approach is painting dark to light, sort of like a contour map, and I use a real small amount of glaze medium to help soften the highlight transitions.
The blues are Vallejo Model Color: Dark Prussian Blue, Dark Blue, Royal Blue, Medium Blue, Andrea Blue, and a small amount of Sky Blue.

Thanks for the comments guys, the Predator Marine and the disc will be joining us soon, but a couple of wordbearers have side tracked me...I enjoy making various chaos spacemarines, Wordbearers are probably my favorites, always lots of character, always lots of conversion possibilities, this is one of two of the latest ones, the other coming very soon:
For the GS pieces, I lay out a bit of putty on a plastic piece of film that the GS comes with. Wet the film, flatten out the putty, cut to shape, add the tears and then peel and apply to the mini. I actually add the wrinkles and folds and such on the miniature.

I decided while working on the disc rider that I needed to expand my marauders and Warriors of Chaos army, unlike most of the spacemarines, I'll be painting these guys up for my own army. Here are the WIP shots.
Adding a small unit of 10 to my chaos army, some marauders with great weapons and will be khorne marked.
Basically anything chaos goes with my marauders, so alot of them are combined components of all the lines including beastman.
Here are the first few with the great weapons,
More of them to follow soon. I'll also be adding two units of Chaos Knights and a unit of chaos warriors/chosen, and a Khorne marked character on a juggernaut. That should get me close to 2000 points and ready get my butt kicked for 8th edition.

Your armor sculpting tutorial gave me great inspiration, when I found this thread I was blown away by your impressive greenstuffing (trying to not exaggerate that much). The combination of really good bitz and models with great attention to detail and sculpting skills makes quite the neat army. Mind doing a complete tutorial on dead flesh (which I frequently see flapping from your miniatures), chainmail sculpting and fur? It's a humble request, I'm specifically interested in how to achieve that tear effect on the flesh. Looking forward to more updates
PS. Ever tried sculpting fire? Now that's a real challenge worthy of a master. Try it and post results DS.

Post by: PsychosisPC
Thanks Izirath. I'll certainly take those tutorial requests under consideration.
I have in the past sculpted flames, both fire and traditional hot rod flames. They do take patience and a bit of forethought as to how and what you are attempting to achieve.
--------------------
Next up another Wordbearer. Note I cheated on the flames for this one. The burst effect is from Armorcast, I believe, it was something I received in a gift bag from Adepticon.
And a number of other choice bits used

Post by: PsychosisPC
Yggdrasil is correct that bit is from the Kroot. When you do a lot of chaos like what I do covering both Fantasy and 40k you do get a very deep bitz box and you are always looking at kit bashing them and cherry picking bits from elsewhere. The neatest thing about chaos is that all the way across the line the bits are virtually interchangeable.
I'm using kroot and bloodletter bits with Maruaders and Chaos warriors to make mutations, and 40k possessed bits with Chaos warriors for chosen, and left over chaos knights and marauders bits with chaos space marines.
And I do feel that my nurgle sculpting keeps getting better as a result of viewing Mike "The King of Nurgle" Butcher's stuff in person for many years on the gaming table and in his display case, and messing around with some of the Forgeworld Nurgle. If you get the feeling of nasuea and throw-up in your mouth just a little bit when you are doing Nurgle, that's a good thing. j/k
Thanks again for the many kind words. These are what I enjoy doing probably the most. As always more to come, and I've also entered paint mode with the Mutant Marauders. I have 35 of them on my desk getting assembly line painted, and I recruited some minis from Tre Manor's Reaper Barbarians and Red Box Games to help with filling of that roster. He is a really cool barbarian sculpter in my opinion.

Skaven War Litter....
I'm not really a rat guy, but a person that I've done some commission work in the past asked if I would be interested in this project. Matter of fact I hate playing against them, really don't like all of their special rules and such. I read the description and thought it would be a cool project using the plastic storm vermin, turned out to be a lot of fun.
The litter is a piece of plastic card with some plastic strips and then a GS overlay with sculpted wood grain.
Made it to fit a 40mm base, basing was going to be by the guy who took out the commission.
Banners are pinned to brass tube with GS overlay and removal, bit of poster putty holding the one in place.
I'll probalby do another of these to use up the rest of the vermin. The halbred blades that I cut off are so cool that I've come up with a good chaos use for them, more on that later.

Something can be said about Khorne. Of the warhammer realm of chaos, Khorne has always had the most appeal to me visually. The shear barbarity and deadliness of it, strikes me quite often.
So messing with chaos has moved in Khorney direction. Next couple of 40k minis are just that. The first a simple kitbash, but its got that look about it.

More work in progress on my Warriors of Chaos Army, like the previous post, I have quite a bit left to do with these, very much in the early stages, but I'm liking the looks of them so far as they develop, so I thought I would show some of the WIPs. First up, some WIP shots of a Red Box Games miniatures. Tre Manor's sculpts of these models are really good. They have really opened my eyes in how to successfully sculpt the exaggerated musculature of barbarians, something that really appeals to me. These sculpts kind of scream Conan which is also really appealing to me.
I have 8-9 of these guys, and boy they are easy to paint in my typical style of painting. They practically paint themselves.
This one is another Reaper Miniature, sculpted by a buddy of mine, Matt Gubser.
Its quickly becoming a favorite of mine, something about the pose, it will be positioned of on one of the flanks when the unit gets ranked up.
Also note the stylized hot rod flames on a couple of the minis. This is another carry over from the previous group of miniatures in this army. I plan to carry the flames throughout the army on capes, banners, shields and tabbards and such.
The next model is another GW kit bash mutant. I really liking the looks of this mini, quickly becoming a favorite of mine.
Leather, fur, hair, horn/bone, etc. to follow.

Much like the previous update, some more progress updates on various models out of the 35. Again there is still quite a ways to go as I really have not addressed the metallics yet, nor have I addressed the faces. But its getting there.
We saw this Reaper Miniature in an earlier post, here is the update on him, continuing that blue hot rod flame treatment through the army, I'll probably reverse the color scheme at some point just to keep it fresh.
Another of my mutants, this one I used blood letter legs merged with the marauder torso, painted in a flesh tone, kind of makes for a creepy look.
Next mutant, haven't shown this guy yet. I've done this mini, primarily to get someone aggravated. : lol
And then one of the old beastmen. I still like these guys, he'll fit with the rest of my rabble.

With the one with the bloodletter legs, I'd do something more with the feet, at the moment it kind of looks like he's got skinny stumps that end several inches along the ground. Not quite the tone you want I suspect. Even with the nice rest of the model my eyes kept getting drawn there in a negative way.

I hear you, I think part of the problem is that I've not painted the claws/talons yet.
Next,
This is the first of the two spawn, painted up in a brown paint scheme. I originally thought about painting the back spines on the model in the horn and claw paint colors, but thought it need a bit more color, was looking slightly drab.

This is Blue Spawn. I really like the look of the model, ut in hindsight I wish I would have changed how the troll body leans so far forward. I also attempted to subdue my normal approach to painting blue, making it pop less and also more flat in appearance, which I think worked for what I was trying to do.
I am going to have to remember in my future spawn making to do conversion of the lacerated skin like what this former chaos troll model has. I think that is a cool effect.
That's it for a little while on my warriors of chaos. I need to get caught up on commission work and bolster my Demons of Chaos for 8th edition tournament season, since its the only army I have that is playable at the moment, and with 8th it needs a bit of tweaking.

My Khorne Demon army is in need of reinforcements and a bit of restructuring to be playable in 8th edition while I build my Warrior of Chaos. Definitely need more infantry, and I also decided to build some heralds on foot. So some additions are in the works...This is the first herald on foot.
If you are going to give them Armor of Khorne, then give them armor. Basically with this guy I decided to armor him up a bit more than my regular bloodletters.
Also sticking with what I previously did on my Khorne heralds that were mounted on juggers, I decided to paint the weapons in the orangish hues. Definitely makes the characters standout from the rest of the bloodletters.

The next of my Khorne Heralds on foot. Like the previous I wanted to armor him up a bit more than my regular blood letters.
Also thought about changing up the weapons to make him stand out a bit more. This one I gave an axe. A sort of brutal looking axe. Something I have had for awhile. Its from Reaper Miniatures.
The basing is done up like the rest of my minis in this army, blood pools with heads and sometimes demonic hands reaching up from the depths of hell.
Another view of the head in the blood pool and the oposite side of the axe.
The other reason to paint your weapons like this is to play up the whole Hellstorm Blade demonic weapon bit.

Thanks guys, very much appreciate the comments.
I really do love these old models, they have so much more character than the plastics. As I stated previously when I was building and converting the plastics these models are what influenced me to take the naked plastics and add armor and tabbards to them. I needed to bolster the ranks of my army a little to make it more playable for 8th edition.
Well here they are...almost done. As you can see the banner is bare. Eventually I will put something on that, but for now it is as bare as it gets.

Thanks man. Been a while since I updated things. But I'm getting back into the flow of chaos. Want to finish up my expansion of my Warriors of Chaos army before moving onto my orc army and a new 40k space marine army.
For Knights I have decided to go with two units of six. One unit will be tzeentch marked and the other Khorne marked and both will be in the same paint scheme as the rest of my army seen in this blog.
For my tzeentch I decided to use the Maxmini heads as I think they look appropriate. I decided my knights need some converting and capes are an obvious thing to do.
Then the banner man, needed a small bit of converting.
I haven't decided if I like the GS on the horse or not. If it does not look good in paint, I'll peel it off and do it freehand. Slow start but much more to come on these. I'll be sculpting Tzeentch symbols on a few of them.
1602
Post by: PsychosisPC
The Khorne ones will be semi traditional in a sense. Here is the first model.
I had a few left over bloodletter arms from my Khorne Demon army. I think the swords work better with the knights.
I wanted a nice smooth panel so that is why I GS smooth the damage in this armor. Remember my paint scheme is a burnt orange and blue, and the Hot Rod stylized flames. Even my Khorne will follow this scheme. The large panels may get some freehand details.
I'm also using the Forgeworld Khorne brass etch for some of the symbols. And of course lots of skulls and chains.
I've also decided to convert up a bunch of helmets to look similar to some of the artwork, but a bit simpler than Adrian Smith's artwork for the Tzeentch and Slaanesh Knights. Capes will also be added like the tzeentch stuff.
And speaking of the tzeentch knights, here is another. I've added the symbols out of GS.
My movement trays are pretty wide, and the knights are kind of hard to rank up so that is why I'm mounting this figure far forward. Hopefully this will give the unit some more dynamic look, rather than the rigid trot.
And here is the backside of the model. This pic shows the support I use under the capes. This is like what I did with the my caped black orcs in my Orc Plog.
1602
Post by: PsychosisPC
The Tzeentch unit nears completion, still have the cape to do for the one miniature. The Max-mini heads really set these apart and make them look good. I have a chaos warrior unit and a chosen unit, those will have plenty of the warrior heads on them, so these knights had to be different.
This is not the movement tray that I will use for these, this is one of the spares that was from a junked project.
The banner man and the unit champ are mounted a bit forward. The one benefit of doing this is that it does help with the ranking up of some crazy poses. This won't work as well for you if you do not make a movement trays a bit wider.
Pic of the musician and banner man.
The musician is just pinned to the base so that I can remove him for painting and then reassemble.
And I love this shield, had it for quite a while now, and thought this would put it to good use. A no-prize for who can name who makes this shield.

A little bit of progress to report on the disc-o-riding sorcerer lord, mostly just on the disc.
One of the comments was that the disc looks too much like a 40k Tyranid (not a bad thing in my opinion) and another was what about a tail. Then as I was working on the knights I saw the musician’s horn.
So, that led to a slight change in modeling to where I came up with this. And you guessed it, some of the horns that I cut off the knights/chaos warriors heads make an appearance (don’t throw anything away). That needs a bit of touch up. Still need to work on the model and base so more.

As things come together, you always get new ideas and the Tzeentch disc that was previously shown gave me some ideas on a new chaos spawn. The ideas were mainly to help tie more of this stuff together in the army. My previous chaos spawn for this army, affectionately known as Blue Spawn and Brown Spawn, were based on the metal chaos troll bodies and current plastic spawn kit, respectively. I do very much like both of them and I am always toying with the ideas of how to include more spawn in my army lists. They are very quirky in games and cause havoc in both sides, and I enjoy running them as a pair.
So, how to do that? Well, my buddy Mike Butcher created some wonderful looking models back a few years ago for his Nurgle Demon army, that can be seen in an old issue of White Dwarf and was on GW's U.S. web site for awhile.
This model is partially inspired by his conversions. And my Blue Spawn uses an ogre head on the chaos troll body, so combining all that I came up with this…
It uses a rat ogre body left over from the Warhammer Fantasy boxed set. I particularly liked how Mike tied together the ogre head and the lower jaw of the tyranid heads on his models, so I attempted to do something very similar in hopes that this ties together better with my disc.
Not sure what I will do with the paint schemes just yet, but they should all tie together with the other spawn. I do really like the use of the armor on these rat ogres, they do kind of resemble the armor on some of my marauders. I’ll probably incorporate some of the armor elements into my Chaos Ogres down the road.
This will be one of those freaky models. I'm very much looking forward to the completion of it. For the second spawn, I will go back to the rat ogre body from the box set and combined in some more tyranid pieces in the conversion.

A new skaven war litter. I've done two other conversions of Skaven Warlitters. While I thought they were good conversions, I was not entirely happy with how the litter looked. The model below is stuck to the base with some poster putty.
The primary reason for me not really caring for the way the litter turned out, was the poles were upright that the Storm Vermin carrying the litter were holding on to. A few people mentioned that to me that they may look a bit better this way as a handle.
For the Lord model I used the one out of the basic boxed set. Its a very cool looking model, for a simplistic two piece miniature.
The Lord model does lean way forward so I knew I need to compensate for that by leaning the entire platform forward. Did this by building up the base with Apoxie Sculp. The Lord model is also on this big rock, I removed that with my dremel and then sculpted in the wood grain of the platform. This one I'm happy with. The base and big rat are one piece. The front bearer platform and Lord are another piece. The storm vermin in the back is separate. And the banner is brass tube and removable, pinned to the platform. Doing it in pieces like this will make it much easier to paint. Assemble after painting.
More pics can be seen at my blog, link in my signature.

I like it, except for the banner. It feels wobbly and out of place. Maybe if it was slightly shorter, and looked more fixed to the platform.

As I build various things, I will often assemble a Chaos Space Marine leftover from 40k never played nor built in my bitz box, and use up left over bits of GS or other types of putty. I'm still a fan of 40k models and the fluff. So this is my latest creation, meant to be another in an endless line of Word Bearers. I do like the possessed bits, lot of fun those are.
This is sort of a primer of sorts. I'm planning a return to 40k, building a new "Insert Color Here" Templar army. I've been working on the vehicles this past week, and they should be interesting, as I'm attempting to recapture the sort of ramshackle look that my Cerulean Templar motor pool had. My new breed of 40k Templars will certainly not be Black and White and will not even be Blue and White.
The drapings on this marine are something that I will use with the Templars. All the new Templar bitz, will definitely make me sharpen up my game a bit, so that my sculpting won't look completely out of place.

As I'm going along building my marauding horde, I decided that I was going to cherry pick a whole lot of miniatures that I liked from other manufacturers as well. Stuff that has caught my eye and that I have wanted to paint for quite some time. I'm not concerned about size as I'm already using everything GW makes in a mix, and besides barbarians and mutants are all the same size anyways.
This model is one of Tre Manor's Red Box Games, Helsvakt, miniatures and it is absolutely stunning in detail and a blast to paint. There is so much detail on it. The skulls on the cape in the back is really cool looking. I'm really loving all of the stuff Tre is doing for his own company and for Reaper Miniatures.
The shield below had a bunch of scars in the surface sculpted into it. So, I thought I would accentuate that in my color scheme and make the shield sort of glow a little.
Next up is another of Tre Manor's sculpts, this time from Reaper Miniatures. This model is huge. The Helsvakt is about 25 mm, this model is probably around 32 mm.
I believe the name of this miniature is Kord the Destroyer. The face detail just screams at me, I love it. The model itself is very reminiscent of his Helsvakt models.
I'll be using both of these models on the extreme flanks of the units. I'm very much looking forward to assembling the units in whole. The Blue and Burnt Orange paint schemes are getting carried all the way through the army. Both of these models are really going to influence me in my conversion and sculpting work in the future. Tre's technique for doing fur is definitely making me rethink how I have been doing it. The detail is top notch in my book.

Helsvakt is definitely a great evil barbarian sculpt, and your paint on him (and his bro) is rocking as usual. Your continued CSM work has also convinced me to invest in yet another box of possessed bits, as I'd like to work on getting a squad or two of CSM built and painted to a higher level than my formal armies, this time largely divorced from game concerns ... Anyway, keep up the great work PPC - Salvage

Some of more my barbarians...
This is another of Tre Manor's Red Box Games Miniatures. And its quickly become another favorite of mine. I think it has a rather cool pose, I can see the awesome downward swing of that cleever like sword.
I'm continuing my paint scheme throughout everything, so the panels on the shield just had to be that glowing like blue.
"the Crazed" is very fitting for this Red Box Games, Tre Manor miniature. Just look at that face.
You cannot help but have an evil smile on your face while painting this miniature's melon. Like the rest of the Helsvakt line and some of his Reaper sculpts, I really love this armor and its what I would envision Chaos Marauders wearing to battle, spiky and gladiatorial like.
And one that I will use in my great weapon unit.

I've worked with Matt Gubser quite a few years ago, helping him out of a jam. It was good experience. Matt's been sculpting miniatures for years and has done lots of work for Reaper Miniatures. This mini is one of his sculpts. I thought about converting the miniature and giving it some hair, but in the end left it alone. This model wll be part of my marauder great weapon unit. Its a large model somewhere around 30-32 mm tall, bigger than a GW Marauder, but that is okay in my book.
It also has very good musculature. Matt did a very nice job with that.
As you can see, I've kept the Hot Rod Flames scheme. And continuing the burnt orange and blue paint colors. This unit will be marked with Khorne.
More marauders are still coming.

Well they wouldn't be mutants and barbarians without some mutants. I need to get back to the mutant portion of the theme also, so these are some of the mutated ones.
This pair. A converted Gor from 2003 that I never used in my Beastmen Army, so I popped off the head and fixed him up. I have also used a few flagellants in the previous group of marauders so this will just be another addition. The weapon head is actually from skaven left over bits.
The mini above is another left over from my beastmen army back in 2003 that never got used.
Awhile back I converted a whole lot of flaggelants into mutated chaos models on commission. I thought it worked well and decided to use up some left over stuff.
While doing that years ago, I determined that Ungor and Flaggelants are roughly the same size. and the parts are virtually interchangeable.
The old metal bestigors are also very different from the current line of minis, so they also make nice additions without any real work other than paint.

I've had these Slaanesh bits for years and never really had a use for them until now. I love doing poses like this one. It screams chaos and come challenge me.
Again you don't always have to go completely over the top with green stuff sculpting to make interesting characters. Lots of times using the right bits in combination make for a very unique miniature. Also, had an Iron Warrior in mind while doing this one. Bionics and mail. An old OOP metal horned head. Possessed legs. The axe is a leftover Chaos Warrior Champion bit from Warhammer Fantasy. Some metal piping from Dragon Forge. Not much of anything in GS. Don't always need GS.

You have definately sold your soul to chaos! All your conversions and ideas are brilliant and offer alot of inspiration. I kind of makes me wish I had gone down the mutated chaos route for my marines rather than the minimalist approach. The cloth looks like it was sculpted on the models by the designer its that well done. The ogre/fex spawn reminds me of the creature from the movie the Thing which can only be a good thing when designing a spawn! As someone else said its always such a relief when someone is a very good converter and they turn out to be also a great painter, it provides the models and armies that make people spend hours on these forums. As to cloth here is a link to my blog that has a tutorial on how I do cloth with GS:
http://psychosispc-themadhouseworkshop.blogspot.com/p/tutorial.html
And on to the warp....
So I have been working on my Warriors of Chaos army a bit. Then I got sidetracked on a different project as well as continuing my work on the Vikings.
James Craig, a friend of mine, and of the 'Lost In the Warp' fame asked if I would build him a beastman. James and I had taken part in the whole North American Primarch Chicago Gamesday thing where the group of us would each build and enter a Primarch in the Golden Demon contest. Anyways, I thought this project would be cool to do. He is a much more accomplished painter than I am, having won numerous Golden Demons for various elements of his Beastmen army. So the model I build will be painted by James to match up with his army. Having done tons of commission building work over the years, I always enjoy seeing how people paint things that I have built for them. The thing about building is that I have this image of what the final look will be in my head in color, and when someone else paints that piece it gives me a very fresh perspective. In turn I asked James to build something for this army that I would paint.
So below are a couple pics of my build:
And the something extra, a midgetgor:
And the following are links to the blogs, mine were I discuss the build and James who gives his thoughts and announces some other stuff that he has coming up.

Of course it doesn't stop there as we also got Mike 'The King of Nurgle' Butcher to build James a cool nurgle piece. At some point Mike will discuss the build at his blog:

So in exchange for the beastmen models that I built for James, he built me a model for my warriors of chaos army. The model he built is shown here at his blog.... http://www.lostinthewarp.com/2012/11/with-little-help-from-my-friends-part-2.html
I'll be basing the model and will show a couple pics of that later. I'll also be painting this model myself to add it to my army of mutants.

Well I finally got back to some painting, this time on the Chaos Chosen, well lucky number 13 of them. Haven't got the command ready just yet. These are the metal ones, I attempted to make each one a little bit unique by adding in some head swaps, otherwise no major conversion work. So below are all the rank filers that I got done, in the blue and burnt orange paint scheme.

Nice job, psychosis. The uniform blue scheme works really well with this regiment. and the bases are simple, but quite effective. Glad to see you got back to painting. I've been missing your eye candy.
