Like most addicts we all come crawling back, but I was wondering just how many times dakka has thrown in the towel and said 'never again'. The other uses for money in the 16-19 age range seems to be one of the main culprits.

Well, I started wargaming when I was past the "raging hormones" age rage you mentioned and when I was already in a relationship so if i've ever taken time off it's been because I just needed a break.

Now I've 'considered' quitting gaming completely probably2-3 times, but that is generally right before a new edition of something comes out and then I get hooked right back in.

When I was in the army it was kind of hard to dedicate the time to the hobby especially when I was in Bosnia, but after that was all done I was right back into it.

I've wandered off the path now and again, but never intentionally.

It's always been life getting in the way, be it unfavourable working hours, a lack of cash, or others.

But yes, I've always come creeping back eventually. Hell, I've even embarked on a new 40k army this week!

So, yeah, twice for a few weeks. The AoBR Orks dragged me back.

I'll take a break everyone once in a while. Sometimes its because of WoW. Sometimes its because I'm just not digging the atmosphere at the store. Right now its mostly because of summer classes and a lack of an army.

That, and when they change all the rules, really cheesed me off the first time (1st ed - 2ed) I'm used to that now though.

Once, I think it was around 98, not long after I moved in with my then future wife. We'd been mostly playing PnP RPG's and CCG's and me and a mate said screw it and quit wargamming thinking we where just good with the RPGs/CCGs.

Sold everything I had par a few bits and pieces. Lasted about 10months, before I saw an add where a kid was selling everything he had including a a gaming board for around £120. It was two or three armies worth, so after chatting with my mate again, we realized we'd been missing it and came back in.

My big regret is the stuff I sold when I dropped out, things like Slaves to Darkness, Lost and the Damned, Warhammer Armies (the one with Cathay, Nippon in) all the old Ork books. All my Space marine (Epic stuff) and of course my 17 fully painted Blood Bowl teams that I was doing as some kind of mad quest to complete out the whole NAF roster.

Painful.

Got started when I stumbled into a GW in Bristol back in 1996 or 1997, gave it up just as the 3rd Ed was coming out. Got back into it a few months ago after looking for an easy read on a business trip and coming across the first two Horus Heresy novels in a bookstore (False Gods had just come out). After reading those and then every single 40K Black Library book I could find I broke down and admitted I was going to have to get back into it. I blame Saul Tarvitz

I quit all nerdery when I went to University, but not as an intentional thing - just the friends I made at Uni were not that kind of crowd and I did not feel the need to find people to play with. It had already been over a year since I had played any GW - it had been M:tG and RPGs for a while before then anyway. I started playing NWN when I was in Japan a while back as it was something to do in the evenings apart from watch gak Japanese TV and my nerd levels have gradually increased again since then. When I quit my NWN persistent world I started playing WAR and that got me thinking about GW again.

Luckily, I never "quit", so all of my old stuff going as far back as 1989 was still in my parents' loft, so I still have StD, L&D, 'Ere We Go etc etc

I think it is a real shame that games like Space Hulk, Dark Future, Blood Bowl etc all have support varying from poor to nothing these days, but most of all, I cannot BELIEVE that Epic is no longer a mainstream game anymore.

Never!, well kind of never.

Well I did stop playing and painting for a few years when I discovered Beer and Women, but I held onto most of my models, still annoyed I lost all the books and stuff I had though.

Now I'm married with kids, so not so much beer and women anymore so alot more paintings getting done.

Once, when I started college. It wasn't planned, I just slowly lost interest. About a year later during biochemistry class I got a whiff of some chemical that smelled exactly like plastic cement. I got all nostalgic and broke out all my hobby stuff again that evening. Haven't quit since.

So I guess I'm basically addicted to glue fumes.

I've never given up gaming, yet, but I do consider it frequently..or at the very least seriously cutting down on purchases and such.
Honestly,I've become bored with GW,the constant price hikes, the lack of interesting, flavorful codices and the headlong rush GW seems to be taking into the mundane and mediocore has truely put me off.
I've done all I care to with my Orkz, still have a few things I'd like to add to my Death Guard and am working on a Traitor Guard force(since I still enjoy the modeling aspect) and perhaps will do a small World Eaters army(if a decent Legions codex ever comes out),but after that,I'll more than likely stop purchasing minis altogether.
I'm sure I'll still game (I've got to much invested not to) but I see home games with friends as the majority of my future gaming.

4+. GW related mostly either through really bad rules likle 3rd ed, being screwed over in real life from one of their staff, stupidly high price rises, and of course my family and playing world of warcraft for a bit. Considered it as soon as I started again this year upon seeing the DA codex and comparing it to the marine one. If they had been the only army I had I would have just walked away and sent GW an email for making the army totally pointless.

Keep getting back into it though when I get the urge to paint again just need opponents now

I started in about 1998 when I was 10 years old and gave up in 2002 when I was 14 because it was 'uncool' and I wanted to play guitar and chase girls instead . After 7 and a half years in which I learned to play guitar quite well and failed to get half as many girls as I would have liked, I returned to the hobby a few months ago after seeing Lemmingspawn's Iron Giants army on this very site. It occurred to me that the only reason I ever gave up wargaming is because I cared what other people thought about me, rather than ceasing to enjoy it as an activity. In my advancing years, I figure thats a pretty crap reason to stop doing something I enjoyed so much, and I'm glad I'm wargaming again (even if my bank balance isn't).

I gave up for a year a while back when I was playing , but I tried to field a troop heavy army with only a couple of tanks, major failure every game.

Then I started playing again last year and gave up for a 3 or 4 months

then I started collecting two months ago out of boredom, so I expect I'll be giving up again some time soon

I gave it up for a couple of years due to lack of time (2nd ed 40k) - didn't give my stuff away (except for 20-odd original harlequins) but ended up giving up tournaments for 17 years due to a lack of interest in them (or too many TFGs - I forget which).

twice - a few years each time

to be specific I gave up when I was in high school after being into the game for about a year. stayed away from it for about 2 years....oh, wait, ive given up on it 3 times! wow. Anyway, I got back into it after highschool briefly because I worked at a Hobbytown USA and convinced the owner to start selling GW products. I used to get a sick 45% discount at the store but I got fired, so I stopped collecting again for awhile. Then i moved to Texas, it was a few years before I started painting again. When I did start painting again, I wanted to choose something easy in terms of color scheme, so I went with Ultramarines. I was making good money at the time so I was having lots of fun building up my army....until my beautiful daughter came along and I had to pick up another job to prepare for her....eventually I never had time to paint and just lost interest in 40k...so i stopped yet again. I didnt paint for about 4 years. Last january I was out of school and considering selling off my figures, paints, well basically everything. I decided, like a failing relationship, I would give it one last shot. I sat down and started painting, I told myself if I did it for 2 weeks and got no enjoyment out of it, I would sell everything. Well, turns out it was the missing segment to my life and I instantly fell in love with it again! And so almost a year later, im still infused with excitement and painting strong!

-sorry for the lengthy explanation

First time for any real period was when I got too pissed off by the rising prices of GW's products topped with my local store closing due to high rent rates and me not wanting to go to a less player friendly store. Second time was when I had started back up on a small basis, but life got in the way. I'm back into it somewhat again now, but the new rules bother me so its really just about the modelling side of things and fluff, and I'm predicting dropping out again once I've got my current army done and my social life takes over again, though I may still be working on a model every now and again. I'm just too pissed off by GW's comericalism. =/

when i was 13 i drifted off from the hobby, and mocked my then- old -friends-now-close-acquaintances for still doing it. i still bought WD for about half a year longer before i stopped. if i was bored i would spend a few hours on a model, but mainly keeping away. but then when i was 15 the hobby got back to me and now i am back in the game, with a LOT of models to paint. I still don't buy WD, really because i don't need it anymore for reviews or tuts 'cos i got DAKKA! (although the battle reps were good)

I tend to follow the pattern of on a year, off a year.
Strange thing is, when I come back I seem to be better at modeling and
painting than I was before, even though I've had a year of absence from the hobby.
Guess its just a mixture of age, wisdom, patience, contemplation and further understanding of life itself.

That or the fact i can't resist a new miniature

I wouldn't count my absence from the game (4 years) as I continued to buy and paint miniatures. I just wasn't able to play.

That's actually kinda funny to me because i gave up world of warcraft for warhammer xD

My hobbies and free time are just on a natural rotation, every few months I switch up to something different. Getting into 20mm (or 1/72) historical gaming keeps me into wargaming, but lets me get tired of GW periodically. Still though, it is impossible to play WoW on even a semi-serious basis and keep up with modeling and painting IMO.

I quit for about 3 years while I was deploying to iraq. I just didn't have the time. But now I do and my nids are growing ever so steadily

I stopped for a while between 12 and 16, when MageKnight stopped being known or any good.

Then I started 40k

I stopped again for a year or so when I entered college.

I quit only once more (when the embargo rage was in full swing last summer). That lasted until the new semester started, when the school gaming club opened up again.

I might quit for a week or a month here of there, but never as long as that first drought, and I always have come back.

When I got married, free time disappeared for a year or two. Got back in. Had our oldest child, left the game, not enough time. Came back. Had the twins, really not enough time. Came back. Lost my job, scrambled to keep everything together and no time again. Back into it, but haven't played a game of fifth edition, only a couple of fourth edition, and can't remember what edition of fantasy I ever played in.

I quit once when I was about 15-16 or so, leaving highschool ready for college I just couldn't afford it and I still can't! but recently a good couple of months I've taken it back up, with WHFB new ruleset I find the game much more enjoyable and I had always had a secret love for Skaven, with there new'ish rules and models I just couldn't help but get them! Though I'm much more casual gamer then I used to be when the money was coming from my parents pockets

And ofc having a friend again close by that actually enjoys the hobby also makes it alot easier to get back into it. I'm not the best at joining into things and without playing games / store or someone to talk to about such things I don't think I would have ever gotten back into it.

Hell I even have a GK army coming along now!

I gave up when I met my wife, we got serious, and soon had a kid. Figured Id never game again so I gave away all my gaming stuff. Several years later I needed a hobby and got back into gaming. Got her into it too.

The biggest loss from giving away all my stuff was the huge amount of Battletech mechs I had given away, over 120 mechs. Many were unseen and conversions using parts hat arent available anymore.

Never fully. I took a break from actually playing towards the end of 4th/beginning of 5th, but keep up with the hobby and still bought and painted models. Back in it now.

Before my GF, and her not only tolerating my hobby, but actively enabling it, I too let women take me from it. However, in hindsight, that was stupid of me. You can't love someone and take them from what they love. Trying to change a person's passions is wrong, and futile.

Convos got to be like this for me:

her: you're always in the garage/basement

me: I'm working really hard on this thing, it's going to be awesome when I'm done

her: You never want to spend time with me

me: ok, sorry, what do you want to do?

her: sit on the couch and watch gak on TV that I like but you don't want to watch. Go clothes shopping with me or you can watch my kid that I won't discipline.

me: Would you like to sit out here with me and learn about the Imperial Guard? About building terrain?

her: no- gives "the look"

me: ok, I'll go

her: NEVERMIND! You never want to spend time with me anymore! You care more about your toys than me!!

me: I wonder why?

Part of me wonders what guys ever see in women like that?

I've never hidden my gaming, but when I have been serious about someone, I have let them know that I was a gamer, and that it was something that was not going to change.

The wife accepted it and enables my hobby. I'm lucky.

My GF is totally the opposite she hears me coming up stairs from my dungeon and groans " Oh no he's coming to bug me"

She actually likes my little men and robot model kits, shes doesn't want to know about where or what so and so is but she humors me can't ask for much more then that. =o]
