To continue our set of polls on the living habits of wargamers, I thought I'd ask you all about your love lives.

In my experience, most long term gamers are also in long term relationships, and their partners are supportive of their hobby, although generally mockingly so. Ive actually known a number of girls who would rather date a gamer than a non-gamer; something about nerds being nicer people.

I've had a "fling" in the past, nothing serious but a nice experience i suppose. GW takes enough money as it is, geesh if i even imagine of paying for a GF and GW i'd be doomed.

How about a question on witch kind of jobs we tend to have? Could be interesting.

I've been with the same woman since I've started gaming (10+ years). She has been very supportive over the years, but I think that's because the money I could be spending on strippers and alcohol is being spent on little plastic men. Plus she doesn't have to worry about me being swarmed by young pretty things.

"Hey baby, I'm a gamer," is never going to be an effective pickup line, but smart women recognize that there are a lot worse pastimes than gaming. After all, you're a lot less likely to get into trouble while hanging out at the game store playing with toy soldiers, than you are while hanging out at the bar. Also, the fact that there are so few girl gamers is a plus to the jealous types...

I feel like this cat sometimes... though I am not a virgin.

Onion article:
Pet Owner Not Bothering To Neuter Loser Cat
July 13, 2009 | Issue 45•29

CORAL SPRINGS, FL—Mike Oakland, 29, told reporters Monday he is not about to pay $100 to have his 5-month-old cat, Mowgli, neutered, because he has no expectations that the dull, paunchy tabby will ever get laid.

Mowgli
"For all he's going to use those balls, he might as well keep them," said Oakland, adding that he'd bet anyone any amount of money that the striped kitten will die a virgin. "He never leaves the house, and I've seen how the neighbor cat looks at him. Completely platonic." When reached for comment, a spokesperson from the Florida Humane Society reiterated that it's important to have all pets spayed or neutered, even ugly lame-o's who probably couldn't score in a roomful of calicos in heat.

Out of the guys I play with - I'm something of an oddity. My love-life and my gaming has never really opposed each other - in terms of my attention or my money. Now, I've only been playing WH for over a year, but I still think of "gamers" as computer, console, and table-top players - in which case I've been a gamer my whole life. Luckily for me, I'm with a wonderful woman who accepts my hobbies and incourages me to do well in them. For instance, she attends nearly every tournament I enter simply to watch, and cheer me on (and she occasionally plays as Space Marines). And I'm marrying this amazing woman in 3 weeks...

Am I a lucky guy or what?

My fiancee and I are looking at getting married in September, on our four year anniversary. She's supportive of my hobby (we met at a Dungeons and Dragons session at what served the college town for an LGS before it went under) and wants to play an army of her own. It took a while to find one that met her checklist, but she settled on Thousand Sons. I play Space Wolves. Go figure. She didn't know any of the fluff, and had to ask me why I was laughing when she decided. At least my Berzerker army is nearly done, so I don't have to worry about getting my tail handed to me by AP3 spitting walking death marines. She has actually played a game, albeit with my army, and she stomped all over an ork army at 1000 points. I know her opponent was going easy (at least at the start) but her rolling was ASTONISHING. The high point of that game was when she took down a Warboss, painboy, and four nobs kitted for allocation with a wounded Wolf Priest and a Blood Claw with a power sword. A heinous number of wounds were dealt, the Wolf Priest made his necessary invulnerables, the orks broke, and were caught. My army doesn't perform that well for me.

April & I have been gaming together for a while now. I didn't really say much about the hobby until she saw all my carnifexes and big guys on the table one day. We played a small gaunts vs. tac squad game and she was really interested. Now she's painting her bug army and we play every single week.

Like you Reaver, her rolling is unbelievable. When we're at my place and playing her rolling is either impossibly good or really terrible. When we go out and play she's amazing and I always have her roll my armour saves and space out my gaunt hordes. She just has this thing where she places everyone 2 inches away from everyone so blast templates hit maybe 3 or 4, which is something I guess I just don't have patience for.

The dice gods must favor those of the fairer sex. This matter will require some research...I must come up with a way to entice these fickle entities of randomization back to my side before her army reaches completion and she stomps me into unrecognizable paste.

Living sacrifice? Dressing in drag? Meditating on a mountain for twenty-five years...nah, that would defeat the purpose a bit. Hmm.

On a serious note, her advice on my painting has increased my skill a lot. We are both animators, but we both took the required art courses in just about everything and she took to painting better than I. The unbiased critique is invaluable. Sadly, she won't be fielding her own army anytime soon...she keeps loading on other projects and things to do that take precedence.

I've been in a relationship for 5years as of July 4th but I rememnber in highschool when a girl
would come over I would always have a drawer in my dest empty to shovel everything into so they couldn't see it. I broke so many models that way lol. I don't even know why I cared because most people "girls" included usually thinnk they are "neat". Well it does help when you have a huge emperors children army that's painted neon pink. But in all seriousness if a woman or anyone else thinks less of you because you paint models and playy a game that requires intelligence and the ability to plan and react then they are shallow and probably not worth your time or anybody elses for that matter.

Been in a relationship for a good few years... have always been a gamer. Got her into D&D a few years back, but it has also been a long time since I've done that. She wants me to DM an introductory game with one of her friends on Thursday. She has painted a couple of my spare models, but doesn't find it to be a terribly engaging hobby on her part. She is, however, a paint consultant.

Meh. Never had a love life with a woman. I'm only 15 (nearly 16), but most of the guys I know have fairly serious relationships, probably because most people at my high school will all go to the same college (it's not like an American college, it's what we call the last two years of school over here). To be honest, I don't think I'm very appealing. I *have* been told that I have a handsome and manly face, but it's my reputation that stabs me in the back.

I made sure that the '40k-gear' was on the table the first time she came over to my house, so that she was aware of my obsession before committing to further dates. Im happy to say that this didnt scare her off!

There's no option for "have multiple partners now" Oh well, I put myself under "have a partner now". I've been with my primary g/f for 6 years now. We're happily non-monogamous and each have several other partners on the go.

I've been gaming all my life and never found it interfered with my love life. It's generally not the *first* thing I talk about when chatting up a woman, but I've never "hidden" it since high school. Admittedly most of my gaming life has been RPGs; the 40k is a recent (5 years) thing. None of my g/fs over the years have been particularly interested in gaming (other than the occasional board game) but they do think that the little painted men are "cute".

Now I've been married for a bit over two years, and my husband, while he isn't into war-gaming as much, plays a lot of computer games, roleplaying games, and board games. He is passionate about rules systems, so will happily discuss tactics, etc for ages. He isn't as interested in the models or painting, but is supportive. He bought me the 40K Ork Stompa as my last wedding anniversary present, for example, just because I said the model was awesome. I don't even play 40K. (I'm converting it to a kick-ass fantasy war-machine)

Been married six years and while she does not play the game she does like helping me paint as i am colorblind and before she came along with no one to help me out with the colors they where, Well lets just say i have a bucket of shame in the corner nearly full.

Most of my girlfriends i have had over the years before getting married thought it was harmless fun that kept me home gaming with friends instead of going out and doing god knows what.

I've been with my wife 6 1/2 years roughly now and married for 4 1/2 of that. She isn't ecstatic over the room it takes up but never mionded me doing it as she is creative too with crafts and arty. Also wasn't happy at all when I was leaving modelling stuff out and our first son was starting to climb and was getting too close to the stuff. He ended up nicking a load of eldar off me at the age of 2 hehe. With 3 kids now my time to paint and convert stuff is less than it was before but don't mind that.

My wifes hot, check. Likes geeks... all her previous boyfriends were geeky too apparently, check. I think my problem before was lack of confidence, shyness and I tend to shut up unless I have something interesting to say so probably never looked at twice

Also think she is happy I am gaming again, spent a long time basicly as a hermit past few years due to a few things and she is happy I am at least socialising again.

Been with my wife for a little over 2 years now. Been married for 5 ish months. I got her playing 40k [she started with Eldar and are now working on a SOB army], she plays DnD, VtM and we are just getting into the Exalted system. She plays video games and has gotten supremely good, where she can hold her own against the best of our group of friends.

I'm very lucky. Especially because she knew about all of this before we even started dating.

Could I reply not as a gamer, but on the flipside, as a gf of a gamer?

I think that for the gamers out there there's usually someone, and I mean when your competition is little plastic men and not other women its great Seriously though, hobbying is fun and even better when you have a partner to do it with.

And for all you single guys, there's someone. I mean once everyone gets past the highschool clicks and actually grows up (Or in the case of gamers who don't lol), they soon figure out nerds are where it's at. They are fething awesome, sweet, and attentive even if ya have to share space with their models and have them obsess over painting for days/weeks/months etc at a time. It's worth it.

So ya there's your feminine perspectif, and as sappy as im gonna get

And I'm really surprised at the amount of husbands/wives etc. who share this hobby, that's sweet

I've been in several relationships before my current one, but I've only just gotten into WH, so it's new territory for me. Luckily my girlfriend supports the hobby and is actually quite pleased that I like to paint in detail, as she paints detail as well (She's into the Japanese Ball-Jointed Dolls, which though they're large, require what are called Face-ups, which are basically re-painting the face to have a certain skin tone and such, as well as going over eyelashes with paint and such to make them stand out better. She also paints intricate tattoos on hers, which is cool). That's pretty nice because it gives us something to talk about together and compare and contrast on.

A handful of one-night stands, and 3 short-lived girlfriends (all <2 months). Neither of the first two were understanding of my gaming habits, the third thought it was cool but she's now engaged to her "ex". All of them just seemed to enjoy my body, not my personality.

I don't have much use for a "life partner" anyway. A slave would be nice, but involuntary ones are....unreliable and voluntary ones are extremely hard to find, especially when you work in an overwhelmingly male career field, and where the few females tend to have alpha personalities too.

She doesn't fully understand the game, but can tell the difference between models - the guys with bigger guns, the guys with jumppacks, the red guys with chainsaws, the "Nun" ones...etc.,etc.,

Granted, I don't know the difference between knitting and crocheting...and it's been bliss between us since we stopped trying to explain our hobbies to each other.

I've had boyfriends before, they've all been wastes of time.

Have a boyfriend now, feels like I'm married to him... I've been with him for more than 2 years. He's on Dakka too.

And, I completely 100% support his gaming, and am OK with the fact that sometimes he spends money he could use on a date on Warhammer. In the end, it's usually money well-spent.

I remember one day when him and I were at a rough point in our relationship, he was about to throw away every figure, paint, brush, box, etc. just to prove how much he wanted to be with me.

Obviously, I took him seriously after that, because I know how important those things are to him or anyone who plays Warhammer or collects the figures.

Gotta love gamers.

They're sexy, what can I say? (Especially female ones.)

On the subject of fitting the profile, I fit the profile of a "geek" as far as hobbies are concerned but outside of hobbies you wouldn't be able to tell. I'm 6'6" 310lbs, in good shape and I'm a metal head (which kind of fits into the profile, kind of)

Had several girlfriends in the past. Always long-term, by high school standards (4-8 months). Been with my current girlfriend for over 3.5 years, with no end in sight. Lived together for pretty much all of that time (although the first year and change was de facto, since I spent more time in her room than my own, whether I was living in the same dorm or, later, the fraternity house. Just recently signed the third year-long lease with both of our names on it).

She's not into the gaming side, really, but she's supportive - even passingly interested - in the painting and modeling side (not to the point of getting involved, but she's quite the artist, herself, so she likes to see how I make terrain, etc.).

My girlfriend doesn't play 40K but plays the occasional board game and RPG.

The pathetic media image of geeks being sad and lonely could not be more further from the truth in my experience. Most of the gamers I know have partners/wives. And lonely? ha! Board Gamers and RPGers generally have an active social life. My best friends I have all met through gaming.

I think I can answer why girls don't like gaming. I think a lot of men try hard to keep it to themselves and not share it with the women in their lives. It becomes something that takes away from the relationship and the time spent together, so many women resent it. When I first got with my husband, I was the worst kind of jealous of his hobbies and his friends. I've come to realize it was because I wanted something engaging that he and I did together. That's why we've picked up Warhammer at the moment.

I started gaming before I started dating so all my relationships/flings/random-drunken-encounters have been as a gamer. DETAILS!:
When I was 15~16, for almost 8 months. Got in too deep too fast though, and it turned to crap, messing me up significantly, in no small part due to the insanity of the girl.
My entire 17th year was another relationship, with someone I later found was a schizophrenic. Go figure, I guess I'm a sucker for crazy women.
3 month relationship around the time my mother died (I was 18). It was really good for me to have someone to lose myself in every night, but the relationship really couldn't handle the strain of death and change.
4 month relationship that started within a week of the previous one. Ended for similar reasons, you can probably see a trend forming here...

Still living in my parents basement makes it hard for me to meet girls.

My mommy says that other girls have dieses and if I touch them my wee wee will turn black and fall off. Fortunetly I have my peanut butter fortress to keep me safe.

The trouble is one of these girls who hates me now is in my art class and any time my teacher is talking behind her it looks like I'm staring at her. So she returns with an icy cold glare (she really holds on to grudges for a long time ) making it hard

to pay attention to the teacher and kind of making me nervous. It also looks like her breasts have gotten larger (hopefully it's just ovulation), too bad I'm not can't to have "fun" with her anymore.

Oh by "sleeping with me" I mean coming over for a sleep-over and when we get tired I crash out on the couch, floor, bed, etc, etc... Then the girl decides to rest beside me slowly inching towards me until she's completely

on top of my chest while grasping my biceps or squeezing my body. No sex unfortunately besides there always seems to be an extra friend or family member around to ruin the privacy.

I take it the person who greeted you was less than attractive. The last time I got kissed by a girl was when she tried to humiliate me in public and she wasn't that attractive (average but definitely not hot ).

I've had a few girlfriends, I was engaged once, and I suppose I've had more than my fair share of "partners."

I'm currently single due to a number of factors such as "still being a fatass after losing 130lbs" and "being unemployed," although I like to blame the libido crushing powers of my no-carb diet than being fat and poor.

That's the problem you can't always expect people to show interest in you, sometimes you have to take the initiative yourself and ask her if she wants to hang out or something. Start off as friend and once you've hanged out a few times ask if she

would like to be your "girlfriend". If she says "no" just laugh it off and change the subject.

...... You two are blessed........ I like a girl who is a cheerleader. But here is my response to everyone! Everyone must know of the cheerleader effect when you look at entire group of people and think they look good. But when you take a look individually they are not that good looking! (Thank How I met your mother)
That was a bit off topic but ok!
Anyway these two dakkites are blessed by a very peaceful god, and to find a girl THAT ACTUALLY DOESN'T CARE YOU HAVE PLASTIC MEN! Is awesome.

Last time I dated was before I started the hobby, and said girl dumped me because I was 'too nerdy.'

But yes...since then, I have realized nerd girls are awesome, and they are far better than normal girls. I currently am friends 2 very nerdy girls whose response to learning I play 40k was "Cool!".

...Unfortunately for my love life, ones asexual and aromantic and the other is taken......

Instead of 40k pushing out or hindering relationships my relationships ended up pushing out 40k. According to the polls, a lot of people are still married or married with children and still playing wargames, so I don't feel that bad trying to get back into it now. I thought wargaming was maybe something of a "single guy" thing to do for a while because of the lack of married people I saw in my LGS.

I thought it was a victory to con my wife into playing a short game, but Redbeard's post totally blows me away: "Happily married to a girl who... is currently cross-stitching choas symbols for me"

Holy cow, dude! WTG!

I have been married for 2 years, and my wife is quite understanding about my hobbies. We have a whole room of house dedicated entirely to 40K, and I have my gaming group over once a week for a few games.

Scarecrow here,
i am only 16, but i have had several relationships, in the past 2 years (meaning 3)only one of said relationships lasted
for more than a month, 3 weeks in, i mentioned that i played 40k, a week later, bam so long 'taken' status
honestly, IMHO ist not worth getting invloved with someone, untill you are driving, have a job (even if its a fething crappy one)
and are not at school anymore, but that's just me, and ive been single for about six months now, and im happier now than i was
then.

Engaged (and have been for 8 years) getting married next April. That being said I was a late started not getting my first relationship until after I finished University. Turns out I was a total plonker and missed several opportunities with some very eligible young ladies because I was too dumb to realise. I assumed they just wanted t be friends as I had poor self esteem and assumed none of them would actually want to date. Ah well, such is life, and my fiancée is a geek, a gamer and almost perfect for me.

I have never once had an actual girlfriend nor have I ever been out on a real date! I am 25, I have ZERO facial deformities or blemishes and I have been told many times I am good looking.

...however I am too creepy and socially awkward for any girl to ever be interested let alone run into someone who actually likes me.

Well, there's plenty of good stuff out there. I dont' agree with everything the ladder theory and seduction community say, but they're right more often than they're wrong.

The trick is to realize that by a certain age, women figure out that they like sex. As long as you're willing to go after low hanging fruit (when I was 400lbs I wasn't exactly sleeping with petite ladies), and throw confidence, you'll be ok.

The hard part is developing the attitude. You have to give the vibe of not really wanting to sleep with them, but instead that you simply know they will.

I was engaged at one point, but as it occurred to me more and more as that the wedding drew near that things were falling apart left and right, I had to make the call and end it. Just to give you some background into how inconvenient a time it was, it was an amount of time before the wedding measurable in weeks. It took me discussing it with her mother to come to that decision. I mean, when you get told by her mother than you just need to give up on her, there's no where else you can really go to see further encouragement. At least I had all that wedding cake to eat afterwards.

Anyway, after that, there has been the "standard issue" several years of torrid and meaningless things go on, but I think things are getting better. I've found one who is cool enough to do stuff like actually want to go see "Evil Dead: the Musical", wear zombie themed heels to go see the Symphony, and drink a gin martini like it's water. That's magic there.

Is it just me, or are girls with glasses cooler, more attractive and cuter at the same time?

Started gaming when I was about 11, had a few relationships and even got married, had 3 kids. Ok divorcing now but nothing to do with GW sucking all the money up lol! All my past relationships no ones complained I've been a gamer, a couple have been on the roleplaying side with me, and one was also a gamer so was pretty cool. My exwife never complained about the hobby (unless I had forgot to put a tool away and the kids found! Sensable tbh ) and was artisty so liked painting stuff up too. Oh and shes with another gamer too now so it shows women arent put off with our geeky hobbies

Yeah I think girls need humor in their lives. I tell adults only jokes. Like ones teens wouldn't even get. Not the sexual ones. The Adult business version jokes.
But I can talk up a storm if I want to. I'm just shy sometimes. Which makes no sense as I can stand in front of hundreds and hundreds of people and prepare a speech and I can't talk to one damn person! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!

Just over 4 months till i'm 18 and nothing thus far. I don't even make it publicly known that I wargame, and I even repulse other people who do. The only thing I had that was close to a relationship was someone leading me on for 3 months, before crushing my being into nothing. Girls react to me asking either by saying no and then removing all but necessary contact with me, spreading rumours about me, turning it against me or a combination of the above. Then there's the awkwardness of being bi but being unable to make it known due to the amount of saddos who will automatically despise you for it, so not even guys are an option until I can find a more mature atmosphere where we won't be metaphorically stoned to death for it.

So yeah, almost 18 years, several rejections, a stalking rumour, 3 people who've cut all unnecessary contact, 1 soul-destroying leading-on and a juvenile atmosphere later, here I am. Woopee...

21 years old here and been dating the same fine lady for over 4 years now. Before that I dated around a lot and no one really minded my all-day binges of Warhammer Fantasy with my brothers or all-night binges of D&D with my boys.

None of the girls that I've dated have been gamers, but my current girlfriend (the nerdiest of them all and our class' valedictorian) reads a lot of fantasy novels and stuff and has hinted that she'd like to read some comics with me and get into some RPGs.

Well it is one thing to have to lose every argument to your wife, it is another having her cruch you on the gamiung table while losing that same argument. So as long as they don't mind losing games to the girls then they could very well be happy.

basically the same as you, though i call my group the leftovers, since we are the widest collection of people just stuck together. just a taster: a quick witted marxist hippy, a seriously dumb taffy, a filipino who thinks hes african american, a filipino who is a ninja, and skateboarders and stuff.
same situation with me, theres a girl i think i really like, but i'm not sure if she likes me in the same sense. We used to annoy each other alot, but not in the harsh way, just the pick-on-the-smallest thing type thing. Ah well, plenty more fish in the sea....

So, I didn't tell my gf i played warhammer for about oh the first maybe 5 months we were dating out of fear she'd be weirded out but she was cool with it once I told her.

Adjective: Treating serious issues with deliberately inappropriate humor; flippant.

Short answer: Being a jerk.

Re: the topic of the thread, I am very happily in a relationship and have been for several years. It's her birthday today, in fact. I'm at work now, but when I get home I will bake her a rhubarb crumble. She loves them, I hate them, so it's a birthday-specific event.

EDIT: Just occurred to me: It's pronounce fah-see-shus. Just fyi.

Ah.

*Doesn't know what 'facetious' means.*

Adjective: Treating serious issues with deliberately inappropriate humor; flippant.

Short answer: Being a jerk.

Will be married in 3 weeks.

Partner got me hooked on 40k, I believe I am the first girlfriend he has had who has shown the smallest bit of interest!

Most gamers I know are married or in long term relationships though although the couple younger ones are very single haha!

I had one for a short time and after the post break-up bs I realized:

I'm 20... Who gives a feth?

Seriously, there are much more highly important things I have to focus on:
1. Finding a new apartment in Houston.
2. Going to UTI
3. Getting a job while in school to pay for rent/car/etc.
4. Try to graduate top of class to be selected for the Porsche elective at UTI.
5. If 4 fails, then go to Ford elective and work for Ford.
6. Develop a successful career as an Automotive Service Technician.
7. Finish restoration and customization of my newly acquired 1966 Mustang
8. Buy a 2005 Scion tC and completely modify it strictly for Autocross and other SCCA sanctioned race events.
9. Become a Master Technician

And where do animals that are controlled by emotions and baby alarms fit in? The bottom where they belong.

If it happens it happens. But after being in the Army my bitterness towards women has tripled... no quadrupled.

This whole "Mr. and Mrs. Right" - Horse gak is exactly what it is. Horse gak.

I have far more important things to concern myself with.

High school sweetheart....that was 2 years ago before I graduated, in college now, just finished my first year, and we are still together, as much in love as the day I told her so. I started the hobby a few months after I met her. She doesn't have much opinion on my miniatures except "They look cool!"

I'm trying online dating.
It's good because alot of girls(or guys if you prefer) can talk to you,get to know you, then date if you want.
It's good if you find it hard to say in words what you can easily type.

Hahaha, sorry but when you brought that up it reminded me of when I tried that.

...it didn't go so well. I think it was just the area I was in. Bottom-of-the-barrel women. If you could even call them that.

Viewing girls as unimportant is perfectly understandable, much better than letting them make or break your emotional state...but bitterness is no way to go through life.

It has been my experience that with the execption of two fellows in my gaming group, (Sorry Nick and Aaron) everyone in my group has actually had a decently easy time finding and holding down girlfriends, and at least two of us have pretty much been constantly in one relationship or another for last 6 years straight.
