Even though 5th edition is clearly the best, 3rd edition is where I started out in the hobby. The old school marine pictures and stuff bring back the innocent memories of those days. *Sigh...*

The Ultramarines (Second Company) were cooler when they had yellow shoulder pad trims! Anyone agree?

Second edition forme, mainly because it was the first one I played, and I still donĀ“t like that they removed movement from the statline, and all that stuff...

And yes, yellowtrims for the ultramarines please. The new bling bling gold is just.... Sigh...

Having said this, I do enjoy playing 5th edition.

As much as I had enjoyed 3rd (know your roots), I think 5th makes for a more enjoyable game. I think I liked how much more you could customize your characters in 3rd, but then again I never counted them on lasting too long either.

5th is my favorite edition (until I get burned out I guess).

When I started, it was just before 4th edition. Since I've mostly played 5th edition, thats what I put down as my choice. I wonder, though, if I might have enjoyed the other editions if I had tried those out extensively.

i liked 2nd because armies seems more individual from eachother with far differing stats etc. but games took FOREVER

5th IS a far more streamlined and, I think, more enjoyable game to play overall.

rouge trader all the way! if you dont have the good old book or havnt had a chance to look it over it suggest you do so. it"s the best. mAybe the rules aren't all there and maybe the game is a bit different than you might like, but If you aren't familiar with the RT book it's contents will probably surprise you... I need to dig up my copy, I'm getting all nostalgic about the "creating a mutant" artwork.

2nd edition's my favorite, followed by 1st, then 5th. 3rd I didn't like, and 4th was better than 3rd, but 5th is the best you can get out of the second birth (3rd, 4th, 5th) of 40K.

3rd if only because it had the best direction of for the codexes. I found the base rule set fine, especially after the TAR and TVR.

DH/WH, the second Chaos Codex, SW codex. Then they pumped out the sub codexes that gave us Speed Freaks, Steel Legion and Lost and the Damned, the purest fluff army yet and saddest Jervis-esque casualty.

Variety was awesome.

Now the game is very sterile.

Only been around for 4th and 5th but I prefer 5th. Mainly for the true line of sight and the way the've made it more realistic.

Admittedly futuristic warriors fighting aliens isn't very realistic but heh, can't say GW don't try!

oops I thought it said "What was your first edition of Warhammer 40k?" (so I answered RT)

My favourite is 5th. I didn't like 2nd or 4th (or maybe they were just the times I happened to be taking a break.) I still get my RT book out to read old fluff and laugh at how obscenely complicated it was. jeez a 1000pt game would take as long as a 6000 pt apoc game now, with all the crazy rules. - rolling for scatter for every model that went into "rubber moss" terrain! (maybe I shouldn't played with so much rubber moss)

I can honestly say I hate the TLOS. Your blob vs my blob and the template terrain was rather straightforward, and now I'm back to counting individual trees from 3 and earlier. Pretty minor gripe from the vehicle grid and templates from earlier editions.

3rd is the only edition I've played, but I played it a decent amount back in the day. I'm actually kind of curious about Rogue Trader though. Someday I'd like to get a copy of the book and give it a spin, just to see what it was like back then. I doubt I'll ever play 2nd or 4th, but I may end up giving 5th a try if there's enough interest at my FLGS.

From what I've read about 5th though, 3rd edition might still remain my favorite.

Gimme a web gun and a vortex grenade any day. Rogue Trader all the way. Not to mention mole mortars! I once wiped out an entire opposing force with a virus round. And, I just loved that grav tank made out of a deodorant bottle.

I do like 5th edition a lot though, but miss some of the customizing you could do with 4th ed Chaos and Lost and the Damned. You could make nearly anything with that.

TLOS is a fiasco, it is just hard to use accurately. Everyone having cover all the time and easily being able to construct your own cover with your own units(two units intermingled, waves like guardiands, bikes, Warwalkers) is a little silly. Their was nothing wrong with Area Terrain in 4th. The problem in 4th was skimmers. And only troops scoring in 5th makes over half of the models in the game noncompetitive.

5th is still the least buggy but they did the same thing they did in 5th. Overreacted to stop what was seen as powerful before. They are really close to a good rules set but the lack of game design(they are games developers) will always keep the game from being truly great. The codexes will always break the game.

2nd Edition will always be my favorite. Loved the feel of the wargear and strategy cards. It was a gamer's game then.

5th edition is ok, and I like the suppliments they have done as of late (Apoc, COD,Planetstrike) the most, but TLOS is sometimes a headache and the changes to area terrain are my least fav changes as they lessen the need to maneuver and disallow you to screen your advance. Its now more then ever just about rolling lots of dice as everything can shoot and everything usually gets a save. I'd like to see terrain be more crucial/tactically useful/important in games and have more strategic value besides giving cover...

I do like the option to run as it just makes sense and allows for more movement and jockeying for position making the game less predictable turn to turn.

Keep in mind the fact that many many people on these forums are young ones that might not have been born or old enough to play some of the earlier listed editions so it is no surprise that the current (and most familiar to many) edition gets what seems to be a disproportionate representation...

The Psionics in Rogue Trader were awesome. Telekinesis wiping dudes into walls, or picking up Land Raiders. Taking over dudes' brains and having them blast at their own guys. Off table support, the 50" diameter Frag missile of death stopping any eldar army in its tracks.

The big problem was the rampant, over the top cheating. Double barreled Plasma guns. "Guide. Doom" Ratling commandos in Terminator armour...oh, wait that was me.

2nd ed. They nuked the squats. That was lame. Then they decided to paint everything neon red. That was even more lame. I got out of 40K a few years later. I haven't played 4th or 5th, but I've got the book and I'm doing up some Orks. It looks fun, but the nostalgia of Rogue Trader will always remain.

2nd ed because troops and individual tank weapons could target the stuff they were meant to instead of anti infantry shots into tanks, and vice versa. Armour modifiers which had MEQ armies more reasonable, and str coming from certain weapons and banshees at str 5 and -3 to that save roll number made them actually scary.

I'm for 2nd edition. It's where I started, tanks were tanks, terminators were terminators; essentially things that should be scary were truly scary.

Some things were broken, but no system is perfect, and it's better when the company making the game is a gamer's company, and not just another corporate machine after your monies.

The game just felt better back then.

I can see why 5th edition comes out on top for most people since it's easy to play and discourages stationary play.

My favorite though is still 3.5, when there were so many different armies available you couldn't keep track of them all and all of the codeciis were viable. You could play against one space marine chapter, then play the next one and it was a completely different experience. Orks had clans, chaos had legions, IG had doctrines and abhuman choices, Lost and the Damned weren't just imperial guard painted differently, and special characters felt "special" instead of being expected all the time. Citadel Journal was still pumping out rules like the genestealer cult. White Dwarf was something to look forward to. It seemed to be more about the modeling than the sport too.

I miss those days.

I used to say second, but with fifth, especially the wacky unbalanced codexes with their mix of crap units and overpowered god-like destroyers makes the game unpredictable again. I might lose a lot of games because I'm not WAAC/TFG, but I've given some of the tournament nutters at my FLGS a scare now and then, when they were sure my Orks or Plague Marines were just about to overrun them. Then the fickle dice gods smile on them, and there I go. At least this way, It's more interesting them in fourth, where people who'd played against each other so much that they knew each other's tactics, strategies and armies inside and out could predict nine times out of ten who was going to win by who got the first turn.

Rogue Trader. (check the name/avatar)

The first version I played and the best. Its a different game and style of play to 5th (which I'm learning now) and takes more time and dedication (and sheer bloody mindedness to finish a large game).

I see the current version as RT Lite.

5th for me. Got to say that TLOS is a major improvement IMO. No haggling over what size terrain is- just if you can see it, you can attack it.
I also like the tactical challenge of keeping your troops in a condition to take objectives, and using elites for what they were meant for; killing stuff, not babysitting objectives.
I started in 3rd, and I think one lesson to be learned from it was the diversity of codices and variant armies. Lost and the Damned being a fantastic example- bring 'em back GW.

I came in with AoBR in 5th, so that's what I know, but I've gleaned a bit about older editions and I think I'd be happiest where I am. Sure, I'd like a bit more variety in codices (I was a little heartbroken after reading some old SM stuff and dreaming up a custom chapter, only to realize that all the Index Astartes traits and custom snazziness went the way of the Squat), but the game works well enough and there is enough variety to keep things relatively interesting.

TLOS is anything but complicated; complaints to the contrary are just whiners who don't want to take the time to bend down and check (how about some immersion, people? Get that model's eye view!). I feel like a lot of the complaints I hear about X being broken and Y being nerfed and Z being blahblahblah come as much from a perspective shift in the gamers as from the rules set. Look around Dakka and count the number of "this looks awesome and fun!" threads vs. the number of posts centered on the words: overpowered, worthless, win, viable, tournament, broken, beat, etc.

Oh, and as for UM trim color, of course they want to spiff up their posterboys. There is a precedent, inasmuch as the SM chapter colors and symbols adhere roughly to the form of European heraldry, in which some colors and metals are interchangeable (i.e. white=silver, yellow=gold). I fully agree with gold being used for heraldic purposes on the snazziest models, relics, and the like. GW just went a bit overboard with the whole "pimp our posterboys" bling campaign. Just because gold=yellow doesn't mean gold should replace yellow on EVERY DAMN THING THE CHAPTER OWNS. It's called taste. Or tact. Or protecting solid assets.

I'm from the 2nd edition day, back when tanks were tanks and las-cannons were foundly called Tank busters. Graykinghts are the soul creation of the 2nd Legon (Dark Millenium upgrade pack). Pskers were some thing to be feard, Grater Deamonds alone could stomp an army. Commisar Yarick had the rule that any unit on the table that could phisicly see him would pass any and all tests.....

RT is a bit too raw, they hadn't worked out much of the fluff as it stands today, and has largely stood since 2nd edition. So there's a lot of weirdness and strange stuff in the rules, it's also rather complicated in places. Streamlined it isn't, but I like it for skirmish type games and it is a lot of fun.

2nd edition did it all for me, a lot of things fell into place and it's by far my prefered version. So what if there were a lot of card counters for wargear and psychic rules? It was a good time to be in the hobby.

After 2nd edition they dumbed it down far too much and suddenly codexes were wafer thin will all the fluff cut out. 3rd edition scrapped individual movement rules, most psychological rules, many of the rules surrounding vehicles and reduced bikes to little more than a movement bonus. Ugh. A lot of individuality and creativity has been expunged from the game today, you get the impression of it with various space marine chapters being offered but the game is too rigid for real creativity and experimental lists.

I don't really know.

I haven't seen many. Only this one,the last one and a peek at the one before that, the one with the BT on the front.

I really don't like how they took out all the special missions and different force organization charts from the 3rd edition rulebook. Now they're in that Battle Missions book. GW has become greedier and greedier since I started playing ;( it's sad.

Despite all the things I miss from 2nd Ed., 5th is still the best game to me. But I'm starting to get itchy, rulesy, designy. Might turn my hand towards making my own ruleset soon. But for pure gameplay? 5th wins, hands down, in my book.

I agree with tek- and I miss GW encouraging you to build your own terrain and stuff :/ but the rules weren't quite as smooth as they are now.

5th is the most tactically flexible out of 3rd-5th. I didn't play 1st and 2nd, but the more 5th I play the happier I get with it.

Gotta be 2nd. 3rd was awful and I don't think the game ever really recovered from it. Hopefully 6th will see a radical overhaul.

I've only played in 5th Edition so I'm quite biased in that regard. From what I've been told 4th was a revision of 5th with view changes and if that's the case then 5th should be better. I don't see 1st or 2nd edition being all that great. I don't know much about 3rd edition, but I have a feeling there is a reason most people don't speak fondly of 3rd edition at my FLGS or 4th Edition for that matter too.

2nd all the way, when armies truly felt unique and full of character, and you could truly personalize your force.

Strategy Cards, Wargear Cards, the Psychic Phase, armories, hidden missions, overwatch, throwable grenades, sustained fire, split fire, flamers that lit people on fire, tanks that weren't crewed by a single person, bizarre weapons that do all kinds of fun effects (Looking at you, orks and eldar) and real TLOS (not this watered down 5th ed version of it).... These are the elements I truly miss about the game.

I loved 3rd... (Actually 3.5 once they had all the Chapter Approved books/articles.) It was just a continious effort to make the game better and the willingness to "Fix" things with a lot of feedback from Andy Chambers.

In the era of 3rd edition, you didn't have huge waits for the next codex release. In fact, there were some codex books that were updated while still in the same edition. (Chaos Marines, Dark Eldar) You also got bonus codex books from the big campaigns like Armegeddon and Eye of Terror.

Don't get me wrong I also love 5th edition, but wound allocation needs to go and the lag time between codex releases is insane...

I got into the game near the end of third and didn't enjoy it. Between chapter approved, one off lists in White Dwarf, and other things the game was obscenely convoluted and the overall group-meta was utterly deranged. 4th was alright and I really had a lot of fun with it but there were still things that didn't sit well with me. Too many instances of RAI/RAW debates left a bad taste in my mouth no matter the side I was on at the time. But in fifth I've noted a significant lack in the amount of finger waving and face palming on my part and the overall community-meta seems much more calm and oriented towards the clever side of things rather than blatantly malicious.

I started in 3rd as well, and let me say I was this close to quiting the game after just having invested in it. Good lord the Assault Rules and vechicle rules were broken as $$$$! Watching my entire 1000 point Tau army disappear in one turn thanks to sweeping advances to a single Assault Marine Squad....yeah, pretty much put a massive hate on with me for how cc intensive this game is. Anyone who thinks BA or SW is op'd now either didn't face or has forgotten the turbo boosting BA Rhinos of doom with the furious charge marines coming from out of no where popping smoke and assaulting you like madmen.

When the TAR came out I would not play anyone who wouldn't use them. I voted for 4th for the simple reason of Combat Patrol and Kill Team plus the incorporation of the TAR. I didn't play a lot of regular games in 4th though, so that could color it a bit. Kill Team needs a few tweaks, but is otherwise a superlative GW game (ie. each model in the Kill Team should be able to act as their own squad, so that the heavy weapon guy can lay down fire while the rest of the team advances, etc, much more of a reason to really kit your kill team out, because then they actually act like the movie/game squads of uber commandos daring the impossible).

That said, Index Astartes and the Chapter Approved (in 3rd) works were FANTASTIC! Very needed, fun, and fluffy. Kroot Mercs, Raven Guard, Death Korps of Krieg, etc all got really going through these. Fun stuff.

The only real problem I have with 5th ed is that they got rid of how customizable they made the forces in 4th.

In 4th, there was a huge difference if you were playing Tanith First and Only as opposed to Cadian or Chemdog forces.

The same goes for a Salamanders force as opposed to White Scars, Imperial Fists or some custom chapter you've created yourself.

And, of course, the difference between playing Word Bearers or Iron Warriors, let alone the difference between summoning a pack of Flamers or a group of Plague Bearers. (although, technically the great chaos codex was the second 3rd ed codex for them, and the one that got rid of the nuance was released just a little before 5th).

I felt like the game lost a lot of nuance in 5th due only to the way the codexes no longer allowed for customization.

I have to agree with this this. One of the best parts of 4th, outside of my previously mentioned fav, Kill Team, was the shear fun you could have with things like Codex IG and Codex Space Marine. IMHO Codex Space Marines should let you build a 'deathwing' army, or a 'bike army' or a 'speeder' army or an 'all assault marine' army or an 'all scout army', but these could be inferior to say the DA Deathwing or BA assault armies. Where you'd get the benefit vs say the BA's Furious Charge would be the ability to take other items or reslotting other figures into other positions, making you tactically more flexible. It would make the other codexs still viable and relevant (I mean, the SW can now field a DW army that has more customization than the DA, but the HQ is more expensive, it cannot teleport, and lacks some of the things like stubborn that Deathwing get, meaning you can run two all termi armies, but each has a slightly different style and feel). I also miss the trait system for guard, so that you could really feel like you were creating one of the thousands upon thousands of different guard armies. Want an elite drop army, okay, want a stern hold the line army, okay, want a mechanized sledge hammer, okay, want a light and highly mobile group, okay...

I miss Jump Pack and Terminator Command squads for marines from 4th.
