Resources for conversion and detail modelling -- Bits, bases, conversion parts, supplies, tools. @ 2009/10/09 11:46:19

Post by: Kilkrazy

We have a lot of converters on the site so it seems like a good idea to share our resources for the minor items which are so useful in converting models.

So, please send in your links for suppliers of the following items:

Official GW Bitz
Conversion parts for GW models
Non-GW conversion parts such as; Heads and helmets, Weapons, Decals, Terrain bits (doors, lampposts, etc.), Diorama and detailing parts (oil drums, sandbags, ammo boxes,) Bases

Please post in this thread.

Include the URL and a short description, like this

Examples:
Hasslefree Miniatures (28mm)
http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/range.php?range_id=39
Heads, helmets, mediaeval, modern and SF weapons, decals, bases.
Weapons are chunky, heroic design.

Pig Iron Productions (28mm)
http://www.pig-iron-productions.com/
SF heads and weapons.
Heads fit well on IG and SM models.

The Assault Group (28mm)
http://www.theassaultgroup.co.uk/store/home.php?cat=23
Mediaeval, WW2 and ultra-modern weapons, equipment and helmets.

Accurate Armour (1/35)
http://www.accurate-armour.com/showaaproducts.cfm?category=4&subcategory=33
Jerry cans, tow cables, stores, equipment and accessories.
Perfect scale for adding to 1/35 or GW AFV kits.

All suppliers recommended should be 28mm or 1/35th scale, for 40K and WHFB.

As the thread gets too long I will collate the info and make it into an article.

Shorpy is more a source for inspiration and reference. It's a collection of photos from WWII to the American Civil War. Useful when you're making some Mad Mek or Imperial Guard machine and need a reference that isn't too modern.

When you're trying to figure out how to get two strange things to stick together check out This To That The Internet Gluing Resource. Doesn't always have what you're looking for, and doesn't have options for multiple different types of plastics, but it's a good start for those days when you're trying to figure out how to stick leather to glass.

Gauss Boys is a supplier of neodymium magnets in many, many sizes, ranging from the size of a pinhead to a hockey puck sized nightmare that can screw up a computer from over a meter away.

Shapeways is a service that allows you to upload and order prints of 3D models. There's a few bits of 40K compatible stuff like this set of spare Killa Kan weapons made by yours truly.

http://www.armorama.com/ - Armorama, arguably the best ground vehicle modeling website ever - although some people prefer the simplicity of http://www.missing-lynx.com. Both places have massive forums and very prolific contributors, both in terms of research material and model photos. Also, http://www.planetarmor.com and http://www.planetfigure.com are definitely worth visiting. Sculpting threads by people like Andreas Heinz are really a must see.

I would like to contribute a recent find:

http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/25vehicles.htm

Some of the vehicles are too small to really be used in 40K, but the larger vehicles which are listed on the TOP LEFT are just about right for SM vehicle use.

Also check out their turrets and weapons page:

http://www.oldcrowmodels.co.uk/25turrets.htm

endless conversion opportunities hidden in there!

I have made a short thread of this style a while back.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/427197.page

http://puppetswar.eu/category.php?id_category=7

Puppets War: lots and lots of resin bits. Also the best deffrolla sub I have ever seen.

http://www.warmill.co.uk/

Counters good for Focus/Fury points for Warmachine/Hordes.

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Kromlech-Bits-and-Minis?_rdc=1

Nice orky stuff. Very high detail yet generally niftily simple stuff in general.

http://www.freewebstore.org/Zinge-Industries/Flexible_Ammo_Belts__amp;_Cables/cat658642_584137.aspx

Zinge, some brilliant flexi stuf as well as orky/industrial/terrian resin bits like vents and turbines.

http://shop.ramshacklegames.co.uk/

Ramshackle, I love them so much. Such cheap nice orky vehicles bursting with character even if lacking in the detail depart. Though their casting system is a bit dodgy sometimes.

http://www.evilmushroomgames.com/new_page_2.htm

Some very cheap guard subs. And zombies to boot.

http://www.elgrecominiatures.co.uk/index.html

If you like very fine display stuff, here's your supplier. Nice prices from a lot of companies. A lot of busts and dioramas as well as display bases and display basing kits.

Most of the others have been already put or are wargame specific (See below).

A good thread on the same topic.

http://www.deathsquadsgame.com/t108-alternative-models-and-vehicles

A few nice miniature ranges from small game suppliers. Some of them make nice monster/character/specialist subs if you like variety. Also some make nice display miniatures. Or if your even burgeoning to start a small time game.

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=cat&cre=min-smo

Smog 1888: a very nice horror/necropunk/steampunk range. All very dark, creepy and generally quite awesome ( I might be bias?).

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=cat&cre=min-hld&sou=cat

Hell Dorado: fantasy stuff mostly. Though dominated by their awesomely scary demon range. That One Of Wrath would make a mighty Bloodthirster and that Succubus a pretty cool herald of Tzeenntch. Though never forget their other factions too. They have quite a bit of character too.

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=cat&cre=min-dag&sou=cat

Dark Age: some nice post apoc mage cyber gang stuff as well as a lot of creepy mutants and demons and the like.

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=cat&cre=min-mrc&sou=cat

MERCS: Some brilliant Infinity style si-fi stuff. Very nice mecha-like things as well a techy infantry.

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=cat&cre=min-blg&sou=cat

Bane Legions: A very nice range filled with very some very good WHF monster subs as well a a very good KOS sub that looks quite suspiciously like the FW one only with a chaotic bra. No inspiration there methinks.

I apologise for any repeats on suppliers. I had a fast look through the thread but I might have missed a few.

Almsost started a new thread & then saw this one!!

Have been looking around for heads to use as a female on a Tau crisis suit & found these:

http://www.zealotminiatures.co.uk/zealot-store#!__zealot-store/alien-female-heads

I believe these are to 30mm

Price is low but delivery is £3+ however it is onxce only no matter how many you order (I THINK)

Gave me a Idea for a all female Tau Army??

Also found these on same site:

http://www.zealotminiatures.co.uk/zealot-store#!__zealot-store/landmines

Thought could be adjusted and used to show Fletchette Discharger??

What do you all think? Would it work??

For UK convertors, these eBay stores are my go-to sources for GW bitz, I've ordered from them all numerous times with no problems. Most will generally be a bit short on xenos parts, but you can't have everything eh.

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Valhalla-Gaming - HUEG stock of Marine bitz, and has reasonable amounts of Guard parts semi-regularly, but I primarily shop here because he does FW bitz, and restocks on new FW stuff fairly often. Always ships really quickly as well.

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/bmfbits - another hefty stock of Marine bitz, typically I check here if my other regulars don't have what I'm after in that regard.

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/the-bitz-store - loads of stuff on this one, a broader range too, including xenos parts stocked on a semi-regular basis, decent range of Warhammer Fantasy bitz as well.

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/From-Fire-and-Flame - less useful for bitz this one, as it's a pain to navigate, but it's absolutely awash with OOP minis from almost every GW range, and you occasionally run across a good deal on some secondhand minis which is always a bonus.

this one building (2 choices) is 42.50 euro's + 6.86 tax + 12.95(E.U)-24.95 (U.S)shipping =£62.31(E.U)

were some card, free + set of snap of blades £1, cheap coving paste £2-3, pva£1-2 and bicarb soda £1 and you can make as many as you like really
(Mix coving paste, with bicarb and thickish pva. till you get a thick whip texture. apply then when left can be carved into when dryish sets really hard if done right NO JOKE)

I cant get enough of the stuff over at wargamesbakery. Some of their bases are insane - dice coming out of the earth!?! You've gotta be in the UK to get stuff from them tho, so im alright!

WargamesBakery (28mm) - UK
http://www.wargamesbakery.co.uk/index.html
Resin bases for round stuff ive got loads of these! (40k, necromunda etc), square stuff (WFB etc) and DS/Round Edged stuff (Warmachine etc) ive got even more of these than i have round ones!
Interestingly they do dramatic hero base packs (2 or 3 bases) and unit base sets (5 or 10 bases) - nice idea!
Scenery kits and very good conversion parts - parapets, industrial barrels, shields, doors, traffic cones, tank traps, you name it...

Was reordering some materials and realized I haven't seen this posted on Dakka:

http://www.taskboard.com/index.html

It is in the same family of materials as MDF, but being LDF it is lighter and can be cut with hand tools more readily. It is more durable than card stock (not quite as stiff as press board, but it won't delaminate on you). One of the cool things is as shown in the video, you can shape it into simple and compound curves very easily. Once shaped (and dried) give it a few coats with an enamel primer to seal it against moisture and then you can paint with regular acrylics.

Comes in 1/32, 1/16, 3/32 and 1/8" thicknesses - which is a pretty good range for terrain building. I use it for a lot of detail stuff and organic shapes, it is a good option for those who don't have the capabilities to heat form thicker plastics.

Considerably cheaper marine helms than I've found elsewher. Browsing through their other stuff, it doesn't seem cheap, but offset by good international shipping rate for multiple items.

"Combined Shipping Cost on Bits:

International - 1st Bit $4.00 All Bits After the 1st are FREE"

Hah! Careful, or you might find yourself tempted into making your minis out of metal, with actual jewels for the detailing.

Fair prices, great service and a massive assembly of 1/35 manufacturers. I used to do alot of ordering through them after my local hobby shop went out of business and never had any difficulty getting what i needed.

Any recommendations on 28 - 30 mm 1900-1950 weapon bits for regular 40k Guardsmen? especially Mauser bolt action rifle bits? (with and without arms) please

So far the closest things I saw is Anarchy (can't remember the exact name) but the site presents Parabellum pistol, MauserC96 pistol (Autopistols), MP-40 (I dont think this is a good Autogun afterall), and MG40 (Heavy bolter/Heavy Stubber?) but no classic Mauser bolt action rifle presented there yet.

As it is a large model, Tamiya spray cans would be a good option allowing you to create a smooth, multi-pattern camouflage design quickly and easily.

However the point of this thread is not to offer advice but to post useful information.

I recommend any High Grade Gundam models for Mechanicus or Tau robot/mecha conversion as a base or for the bits. They are cheap and are good quality injection molded plastic and you don't need to worry about the internal skeleton of Master Grade.

Great number of bits/conversion for a Missileside.

Anyone know if it's possible to get sprues of weapons (sci fi/ Cold War/ modern), without the figures? I have a dream of a Japanese armoured samurai equipped with heavy machine gun or laser cannon... or is my best bet green stuff and brass tubing?

Tau weapons in general might work pretty well . Found this on ebay by searching for "tau burst cannon". There were a few other 3rd party variations that came up as well.

Canfield Lead Solder for Stained Glass

https://www.delphiglass.com/soldering-supplies/solder/canfield-50-50-solder-1-lb

Good heavy stuff for weighing down bases with. Needs a little flattening to get it into a 25mm, but it's pretty soft, what with being 50% lead.

United Nuclear Lead Sheet

You'll probably wind up on a list, but if you need a sheet of lead ... they'll sell it to you.

Been poking around online lately for Feudal-era Japanese minis (mostly with a view to cobble them together with some necromunda stuff, but if I found, say a particularly nice plain old historical mini, I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at it...), had limited success, and was wondering if there were any bits boffins who might be able to point me in the right direction? Extra McBogus points if you can find me stuff that's based in Japan, so I don't have to order from the other side of the world! Cheers!

Hi, I am new here. Always stumbled over this forum so I could not help myself but sign up.

I don’t know about Japanese minies yet, sorry. These days I’m all about cultists. Got my self several boxes (anvil, victoria, frostgrave, gw, ...) to build my own squad.

I was wondering if you guys have any idea where to get small little chaos symbols like the cultists in the 5men gw-cultist box are wearing for fashion

I’d handcraft them myself out of plastic card but these need to be like really tiny.. I then thought about pop up punches to do the cutting work for me. but I found only motives of butterflies and flowers, no chaos stars nor at least a 8 point star.

Anyonegot an idea or discovered someone who is moldin something like this?

Thanks

Any other idea welcome
