So yes it's being controversial, but I just wanted to get peoples' opinion, that's all.
Anyway, after much debate, here it is!
Extra special thanks to Waaagh_Gonads and Legoburner for pointing me in the right direction and keeping me out of trouble
I'm just happy I'm even listed in the poll along some of the very members that made me decide to join this forum. Special thanks to all posters for making Dakka the great place it is!
I'd like to give honorable mention to Redbeard, as while I tend to disagree with him on certain topics, he represents the old school hobby mentality with the most poise and grace of anyone who favors it. He's made me scratch my chin on more than one occasion
Modquisition on. Lets lose the GWAR comments people-NOW please.

Don't worry Frazz, I'll make a Very Special Poll for you ;p

LunaHound expressed my feelings more eloquently (if only I had a second vote....)
Missing Polonius, Sourclams, GBF, Arctik_firangi, Orkeosaurus, Insaniak, and Pureevil.
I also would have thrown in Cheese Elemental (because his blatant immaturity is a nice change from the all the pretended maturity going on around here) and Grizgrin (my swell chum).
Seeing as I spend most of my time in YMDC (reading), I had to give Gwar! my vote, though it's a tough call. Legoburner would have to be my very close second.

Though secretly I'm hoping Legoburner loses and then in a fit of fury introduces that "special little code snippet" into the Dakka Matrix so that Gwar!'s posts all read, "You know what, you're bringing me around to your way of interpreting that rule," HBMC's posts read, "I'd like to say the Chaos 4.0 codex is the best one ever... but I'm worried that it would sound, you know, too opinionated ," and Yakface could only use Don Rickles for avatars.

...SECONDED!
That would be one of the most amazing days, ever. Lego? April Fool's Day prank, maybe?
This poll would make more sense if there was some sort of explanation attached to it explaining just what each of these people has done to warrant being nominated for this obviously prestigious award...
I think we need to re-do this actually. Start by having a week of nominations and shortlist the ones with the most nominations. Then have a 2 week poll.
Emperors Faithful wrote:Then form a plot to kill said king. In parliament. With lotsa gunpowder...
Which is funny in itself because the Monarch is forbidden to enter the House of Commons, because the House of Commons is (surprisingly) for the Commoners.

Hmmm, I guess that is why Littleboyblues ended up in the top 10, even though he is relatively new. Great painter, but I don't think he would make my short list. Grey_Death would be up there though.

Nice, but JHDD proclaiming "I belive in HBMC" while HBMC sings praises to JHDD would be MUCH more entertaining .
While most of the other contenders for this poll are great fellows and fellowettes, as are yak and the mods (and many, many people that did not make this poll), I had to go with legoburner. I just think he is a little unsung in these parts and deserved some recognition.
It's a pity that Frazz isn't in the list. He is the sole mod who dares enter the shamelss hive of scum and villany that comprises the OT section.
Failing to have the option to "get off his lawn", as he would so eloquently put it, I vote for Gwar!. Simply because feeding the trolls makes it more entertaining.
Cheese Elemental wrote:Nobody put me on the poll. Why, guys?
'Cause you can't win 'til after I win. It's the natural order of things. If you won first it'd be like Robin being given a Super Hero of the Year award before Batman could win one.

Then Declare me King Anyway
Yeah, I guess, maybe next year, if I don't drive the mods mad.
I had to pick Littleboyblues, because the work he is doing is absolutely stellar, and is even bringing attention to the site through word of mouth. Almost everybody at my gaming group found dakka because of his awesome mural paintings on his vehicles.
Manchu wrote:Wait, Cheese is your sidekick. Suddenly, things are so clear . . .

Mine goes to LBursley, I've been watching all his videos and it's been inspiring me to get painting again. Especially now that I know about paint additives like flow improver etc., I didn't know what any of that stuff was before.
In all fairness though I think this could have been done a lot better. I mean we didn't even get any real time to nominate people, it was quite literally first come first served, which is the only reason I ended up on the poll at all and a lot of long-standing members were left out.

I have to say this pool of the Dakkite of the Year would be cool on a forum with just a couple hundred of members or just a home made forum for your friends or clubs...
Dakka sheer size alone doesnt cope with this concept IMO... Theres lots of important people that are not even on the pool ( no yak? wtf?) and I dont think you can ever make a size effective pool of the generality of dakkaites.
Also I see in this pool people that are the oposite of someone who contributes to dakka. Its more like a parody and its ok I guess, just not for me...

Gonads wins for Blogorama, not to mention all those unsung years being the only Eastern Hemisphere [MOD]. Not that Lego does not deserve to win besides.
I voted for GWar. I have not been on dakka for quite a while now. But from what little I have seen of Gwar to me he seems like a mini Yakface in the you make the call section before yakface was overlord.
He has been helpful to me an replied quickly to my SW rules questions. Also due to his efforts on the SWfaq he wins my vote. (if only because SW are my main army and he has been helpful with the rules)
Also I really dont see the point of this. Unless its a popularity contest.

You know, I sometimes wonder what it would be like if Luna and Gwar! were to have a child. Not a biological child, of course, since they are both actually just incorporeal spirits that are trapped in the internet and can only communicate with us via dakka (or skype). No, I mean some sort of artificial intelligence along the same lines as them. It would be like having our very own Void Dragon.

@Gwar!: Interestingly put. Come to think of it, I have often wondered if the two of you might together comprise a single entity crippled by some drastic disassociative disorder. I'm having trouble identifying which is the "Smeagol" personality and which is the "Gollum" personality, however.

Well, about 6 months ago Dakka switched from a 40k discussion forum to an exercise in placating Gwar's ego.
I mean, I'm assuming that's why the Mods work 24/7 to make sure nobody ever says anything remotely mean to or about him, while ignoring his constant arrogance and flamebait.

Maybe Dakka gets paid for every post gwar makes? Even if it's just one cent per post, 50 cents to a dollar a day is pretty decent.

What makes more sense:
A few dozen people across the forum in multiple threads decide out of the blue that they will pick on somebody cause they have nothing better to do?
OR
Said person openly admits to deliberately trolling the forum, spammed, and flame baited/argued his way across the forum and people are sick and tired of his antics thus bringing all this down upon his own head?

Hmmm.......
Well, he's not right 100% of the time, but one thing I've noticed is that someone will say something that does not jive with the rules in YMDC. Gwar will come in and say how the rules actually are. The first poster will say that Gwar is rude, and a troll, and that he's the reason that nobody goes into YMDC any more. I find that my opinion is usually pretty well received on YMDC, and that's because I actually follow the tenets of YMDC, and most of the time I have solid grounding in the rules for the posts that I write. It's the people who come into YMDC and post nonsense that's not based on the rules that claim that YMDC has a hostile atmosphere.
@ Wildstyle: that's not strictly true though. Sure, there are plenty of people that confuse "how I'd like the rules to work" with RAW, but there's become a bit of an echo chamber towards a highly literal interpretation of RAW, focusing less on meaning and context, and more on precision. The Russes in witchhunters debate was a classic example of that. There were solid arguments that RAW supported taking a russ, just not the strictest literal interpretation.
There's plenty of hostility even for people with reasonable points.
I'm kind of shocked this popularity contest has been allowed to go on this long!
Though, IIRC, LBursley's paid money out of his own pocket to fund a painting competition (or tutorial competition... whatever). That, IMO, helps improve the community and gaming experience more than WELL TECHNICALLY BY RAW I CAN DO THIS. That really gets annoying sometimes.

You say immense contribution, I say ceaseless spamming of his opinion until others leave. I know of a sizeable number of respected posters who no longer use the YMTC section of this forum entirely due to Gwar and his methodology and ceaseless showboating.
The idea you would vote for someone who has crapped in the sandpit so many times that others don't want to go back there is really tragic. And any contribution made has been immediately followed up with demands for praise and attention, which is also entirely distasteful. Good people do selfless things to make the world better, not to receive an ego stroke.
Well, that's the point isn't it, if you've done something good then the knowing of it should be enough, if you receive a compliment so much the better.
Demanding recognition for doing something (like a FAQ when you've spent a month prior decrying the FAQs as soon as one directly disagreed with you...) is puerile and needy.

Gwar, your absolutely right. They have learnt the hard way that trying to enter into debate with you is pointless and that you will simply keep spamming a thread until they give up in disgust. So yes, they clearly demonstrate wisdom in their character and their wish to stop banging their heads against the brick wall. People are and have left YMDC that might otherwise be engaging in open and polite debate, leaving you to hop up and down on your rock and shout into the void of the interweb that you are correct.
Hmmm, well I don't know what the point of this thread is really, but I think Legoburner deserves lots of praise and recognition for excellent work that has been done to the site over the past while. It just keeps getting better and better.
Kudos!

I'm impressed. It takes a lot of dedication to eat your own face. Just saying.
I vote for whoever our current overlord is at point of writing. I for one welcome him and am shocked you do not see the greatness of our new overlord (insert name here).
This thread is a good bit of fun and shows we have a real community even though it's all text and light and we're all thousands of miles away from one another. I really like it here and I like all the people. I don't always get along with HBMC or MGS or Frazzled but I appreciate seeing them day after day and always take the time to read their posts. Same goes for Polonius, whose eloquent messages are nearly always a pleasure to read (kind of a pity he wasn't on the list). Every one of us tends to annoying once in a while (or maybe even as often as we hit "submit") but we still come around. Point is, I like Gwar! and don't really see the need to constantly berate him here or anywhere else. No doubt he can be rather insistent but I hope people will keep their criticism to the friendly/humorous. If you have a serious complaint about any user's behavior, isn't the appropriate venue PMing a mod rather than grandstanding in a thread that's just for fun?
If it were just a collision of personas then I agree with you Manchu, it's best not the subject of public debate.
When, on the other hand, you have someone who has gone to great lengths to become noticed within the community, you have a cause celebre. There is a strong dividing line when it comes to Gwar, some vault him and support him, others detest him and are still boggled by just how many times you have to be suspended on this site to actually be banned.
So here's the thing, if someone seeks out 'celebrity', even in as niche a market as this is, by being controversial and continually drawing attention, they will become the subject of public debate. There is a sizable number of dakka users who have issue with him, why should this not be subjected to discussion?
Polonius wrote:There's plenty of hostility even for people with reasonable points.
The same could be said for the OT forum. Personally, I find YMDC to be a pleasant walk in the park on a sunny day compared to the constant "Bitter/EgoFest" that clouds the OT. So how about we stop throwing rocks, heh?
What amuses me is that given that very few people in the Dakka community actually play games with each other, all the arguments on YMDC are largely irrelevant.
EDIT - Back on topic... Vote Luna (if you haven't yet appointed somebody to be your campaign manager Luna, I'm your guy)
MeanGreenStompa wrote:There is a sizable number of dakka users who have issue with him, why should this not be subjected to discussion?
I obviously can't stop anyone from posting whatever they want about Gwar! or any other user. No one can, save the mods, who are pretty lenient on the whole. But the discussion you're talking about--as long as it happens here in "public"--merely contributes to the very cause celebre you're decrying.

I've noted that you can vote in polls without signing in. The poll recognises the computer that you voted on not your actual login.
Therefore...
If I waited until everybody in my office went home and then used their computers to register extra votes for my chosen candidate, would that be frowned upon?

Not true, I simply don't buy the hype and ensure I vocalise my objection. A significant number do not and simply cross him off the Christmas card list as advised by the moderators. Which would be fine but then leaves him carte blanche to tour the site with his circus of self and newer or younger dakkites suddenly believe that this is the way they should be playing the game, spending hours pawing over the minutia to try and find exploit to a commonly held opinion or rule. To accept that you can call someone using the FAQs a 'cheater' etc.
@Flashman: I don't see why not. How do you think we always manage to have Leman Russ voted best primarcch--I mean, nothing, nowhere, election fraud is totally unforgivable!!! (just a joke, haters)
MeanGreenStompa wrote:But I'll lay off here.
If you insist, I didn't mean to criticize you (this time, ha). You make a strong case in a way but what about Flashman's point? Even us newer dakkaites don't come here to learn how to play. I'd say we look for clarifications at the most and take the advice as suggestions. If Gwar! rants "You can play whatever game you want while I play 40k" so what? Like Flashman pointed out, Gwar! isn't at your FLGS sitting across the table from you. Those who can't get over it and so flee YMTC seem to mostly have "personas," as you might put it, as inflated as Gwar!'s. Gwar! just has more energy to keep on and on and on. I do think it's wise of them to just ignore him if that's the best they can do but no need to do that and air the grudge elsewhere. Plus, you can humorously deflate an ego (as I think you've done mine once or twice!) and that doesn't make for a vendetta.
Manchu wrote:QFT. Heaven forbid a reasonable person of faith get involved over there.

Yeah, Frazzled's grumpy mannerisms and GTHO attitude was the only thing that kept me from gnawing through my wrists when I first perused the OT Forum...for that alone he should be a canidate on this list.
Oh well, "Crochiest Dakkite of All Time" will have to do
Val is not prepared to accept the presumption that Luna is a girl. He wisely holds to the idea that there are no girls on the internet. Luna hasn't bothered to directly answer him so it's all a bit up in the air, you see.

It is more that I have assumed that just because someone uses a female avatar doesn't mean that they're female. My Diablo 2 Amazon had a ton more successful trades than my Barbarian, for instance, I guess because internet nerds are trained to hand things to "hawt chixx0rs".
Never assume someone's gender on the internet based on avatar. We all have jolly pirate nicknames. I could be a 12 year old girl in Topeka, I could be a 90 year old man in Ullan Bhattar. Turns out I'm a nerd in Baltimore, but there we go.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, mate! Truth is, I don't think we can really ever agree on the 'Dakkite of the Year'. There are so many options, and restricting them to a mere 10 in the first go is a bit...restrictive? There are lot's of people I might vote for that are not up there. 9Though I may still pick the Donal Trump Dog).
However, when I first got here, Gwar! was the big name. Infamous, but stil famous. So that is who most of the new members will be voting for, as they have not had contact with anyone else.
I voted for lunahound, she paints well and she watched all of the ALIEN movies. although she does have creepy avatars, but she has watched alot of anime sorry gwar!

QFT. Heaven forbid a reasonable person of faith get involved over there. But I try to stick to the news story posts and like reading/critiquing Frazzled's glosses.
Well, OT can get nasty, but keep in mind that if asked people what their viewpoints were, and then asked what view points were most opressed, there's usually some strong correlation.
And I don't feel like I'm throwing stones. I try to stay as fair as possible, and as a reasonable person of faith, I'm not entirely certain what dire consequences are supposed to befall. me.

Guys i have a question but dont kill me for asking please.
I know some of you on this page doesnt get along with Gwar! and certainly doesnt make any attempt to hide it.
Your reasons i can understand , im not arguing about that.
But if you look at the poll , atleast 59 people voted for him.
Which means beyond the arrogance or w/e those are 59 people that appreciate Gwar!'s help.
Cant we atleast respect it that much?
i voted for Gwar specifically because so many other people on this forum don't like him.
-Full Disclosure-
I came to this site because of H.B.C.M. His words were dogma... His posts angelic pronouncements... His Reviews, Like being visited with all the knowledge in the Univerce by the grace of a superior being... (And his armored IG regiments astounding )
But he has failed us. Heretics started sprouting reviews left and right, our Lord nowhere to be seen... I persevered but a person can only go THAT far.
Then a voice of reason came. The Donald Trump Dog voiced logic, and kindness, and led us to a better, fluffy (sorry for that word) world.
H.B.C.M. woluld get my vote for a 2008 poll. Oh Lord why hast thou forsaken us!!
The Deff Dread gets mine for this year...
