I still use a brush and black paint. I've been thinking about getting a can of the spray on stuff... like hair or something...
From what I've read, though, you still have to go back in with a brush sometimes. So, until I get a can to try out, I'll just be thinking about it. :p

If you aren't one of those "Golden Demon ten months on an infantry model" types, I like Krylon Fusion for all my plastic models. It goes on a little thicker than some primers but still shows detail well. It chemically bonds to plastic, forming a very durable basecoat. I've used my thumbnail to try and damage the finish, but it's tough stuff.
The other benefit is that it's available in a lot of satin colors that take paint just fine. I have white, black, warm and cool greys, khaki, navy, maroon, and several other colors that have formed my first base color and been the primer all in one.

I tried out black gesso on the suggestion of someone here. And it worked amazingly well!! Tried it with white, and had terrible results! What's the diffrence? Same brands!! (please withhold any racial jabs. )
So for white I just get some rustoleum or whatever brand they have at the hardware store white metal primer. Works great, but I typically have to go over my black models with paint anyway, so the gesso is the perfect deal.

I have been painting miniatures for 30 years- I even held a fig-painting class for 8yrs in a couple local stores.
I have used everything (or seen what I haven't used on other peoples stuff)
TAMIYA white spray primer is BY FAR the best- No others even come close-(they make Grey too, but not black)
it covers well, goes on very light and flat and doesn't obscure surface details, drys FAST-
and with certain colors you can basecoat right over the white primer with wash or ink and then drybrush one or two stages of GW or Vallejo and you're DONE!
-------------------------------------------------
The only drawback is price VS. size of can-
-------------------------------------------------
But I guess if I was painting 99 cents a bag "Plastic Army men from the Dollar Store", I'd use cheap Krylon or some other generic garbage-
I spend TOP dollar for HIGH QUALITY figs, I use the best primer, and paints MADE FOR painting figs-
I can promise there are NO Golden Demon winners that used Krylon and Apple Barrel craft paint-
All the talent in the world can't make up for bad, cheap supplies- But top-quality stuff can make it easier for a mediocre painter turn out decent looking minis-

I use the super cheap midget cans you can pick up for a buck at Home Depot or Walmart. Haven't had any problems, yet. Don't spray like a jackass and your minis will come out fine. Nice satin finish that takes paint just fine. I've also found that it's pretty forgiving stuff if you overspray and get a drip - just blow hard at the drip to spread it out and you can still save the details. Don't have any chaos black, so I touch up the crevices I missed with watered down craft acrylic (Apple Barrel and the like). Works just fine for me and doesn't break the bank by a longshot. Tiny cans are easy to carry and work with, too.

It depends, if I'm lazy I'm using canned black or white primer, GW or Prince August, if I know I'm gonna do some airbrush work on the model I usually start with a black coat through the airbrush. Going forward I'll probably be doing AB only. It is cheaper, you need a single step to cover all the spots of the miniature, there's no fume to ventialte away, and I can worrk on model at 11 PM without disturbing the neighbours or my family.

most non-citadel spray paints will melt/warp the plastic. no joke. I have used...MOLOTOW, KRYLON, OFF BRAND, etc...
none of them are worth it...and plus, if you use citadel paint, it has bonding issues. because you are doing water based over oil based....ever pour olive oil in a glass of water?
for those of you who DO use chemical/oil based undercoats...I don't want to know what your armies will look like in a few years.
I like citadel paints because I don't get high while I paint in my man cave. water based = win.

The cheapest black, white, or gray FLAT sprays you can find at Home Depot or Lowes depending on the color scheme of the mimi.
The cheap crap tends to really stick to metal or plastic. If the can starts to get powdery or sporadic I dump it immediately. $1-2 US dollars is no great loss.
I spray for a whole day's session though. I hate the priming process so I'll knock out a hundred models or more models on a lazy Sunday, so I don't have to do it again for a while.
If I only painted a few models a month or competed, I'd have no problem spending the a few extra bucks on the quality GW? or Armory! stuff.

I use Duplicolor Black Sandable Primer for metals. It's an auto-primer.
Little secret I learned working at Privateer Press: Duplicolor is what their catalog painters use. They didn't start selling their own primer until after I left, but I've used it and I'm 100% certain that it's just repackaged Duplicolor. Can is the exact same dimension, with the exact same nozzle, and I cannot tell any difference between the two -- except that a can of Duplicolor is half the price of a can of P3 Black Primer (and a quarter of the price of GW primer).
For plastics I used to use Duplicolor, but lately I've been using Krylon Fusion Flat Black for most models, and other Fusion colors for some specific models.
For example I use the Burgandy as the base coat for all of my Chaos Space Marines and then wash it (using a spray gun) with a mix of Baal Red and Badab Black, and the end result is the same deep crimson red of the GI Joe Crimson Guard action figures.
EDIT: Wow, I can't believe how many people use GW spray primer, and hobby primers in general. You guys do know you're throwing money away, right? Auto primer is the exact same thing and costs half to a quarter as much!

I used to use GW spray for the longest time. But now I have moved on to cheaper products because the GW spray is like $15 a can. I usually just use Home Depot Flat Black Primer. It's like $2.00 a can. Takes a little longer to dry but the paint sticks fine. I then just go over the unprimed areas with chaos black paint and a brush. Works fine and doesn't chip if I use purity seal.

I usually use chaos black primer from GW. I tried the army painter 'army green' today. I have to do some speed painting on my Catachans.

Well, I'm supposed to write this in.
Duplicolor. They make great primers.

I think the 96 cent Walmart spray paint should've been an option. I used that for the longest time until I learned better.

Wal Mart's 95 cent primer. Cheap, covers well, and doesn't distort any of the model's details

I've always stuck with Testors flat black spray. May be a bit more expensive per can, but it sticks well to plastic, and makes for excellent base for my necrons.

Yeahhhh... I am not the average. I use Army painter since it comes in shades that match my base coat color which saves me a lot of time. Also., the cost is about the same and i have had problems with cans of GW spray fuzzing and clogging. not good.

I use the Privateer Press P3 spray in black, reccommended by my FLGS folks. A little cheaper than GW and the spray comes out in a fan instead of a cone for precision work.

I used to hand prime back when I was first getting into the hobby but that was before I had the money to actually buy a lot of stuff at any given time. Once I could start buying up larger amounts of models at a given time I had to start spray priming because hand priming just took forever.

Vallejo airbrush ready black primer. Great coverage none of the nasty fumes and seems as tough as the gw spray cans.

I just started using brush on paint after getting sick of dealing with issues that popped up time and again with spraying, leading me to have to strip everything, reglue it together, and basically start from scratch minus the mold lines.

Has anyone tried Krylon Fusion? Link here. They say that they're designed for plastics and resins, so if nobody else has tried them, I'll give them a whirl, and see how they go. Nice variety of colours, and half the cost of GW primers. Obviously not as cheap as the Walmart brand that's been mentioned, but a range of colours to choose from.

Been using some cheap Krylon from Wally World recently. Works just as good as GW and is less of a strain on the wallet. Been thinking of trying Tamiya in the near future as well.

Unfortunately I'm limited to brushing on everything, *sigh* all my money goes to GW figs which leaves precious little for paint, and so my poor 'crons are forced to take Apple Barrel. :(

Brush on. I like to use the undercoating step as a time killer when I have nothing else to do, so I brush on the undercoat to take up the maximum amount of time.
