Hobby crossover - what else do you play/collect? @ 2009/11/12 21:32:45

Just wondering how much crossover there really is amongst the wargaming hobby and other hobbies that get mentioned around here a lot... Multiple choice and for the sake of not listing a million hobbies, I've listed the most popular hobbies perceived by late night comedians as being geeky.

Hmmm, seems I could tick eight of those boxes.. is that a bad thing?

But aye..

CCG - Magic, Pokemon, Legend of the 5 Rings

RPGs - Probably do more of this at the moment than Wargamming, at least one game a week.

Non Miniature Board Games - loads

Video games - own a Xbox 360, Xbox, PS2, Megadrive, Wii and Gameboy

MMORPG - check my sig

Action Figures - GI Joe and Star Wars

Comic Book - GI Joe, plus any X-based comic if I'm at a comic store.

LARP - not done it lately, but was once a ranked member at the Lorien Trust events in the UK.

I wish I could give half-checks. There are a few things I have done at one point or another, but haven't really kept up with. I can only manage so many hobbies at a time. At least without failing out of school and digging myself even further into debt (damnable student loans... grumble...). Have a few MTG decks I've put together over the few years I've played (scattered wildly over the past decade or so, due to the fickle base of opponents, which meant the cards were never in use for more than a few months before my friends lost interest again). Went to a few LARP events way back in middle school, but it was pricey and far away. Done a bit of fighting with a Markland group on campus (odd that Markland has a presence while the SCA doesn't...), but scheduling has repeatedly dashed any hope of regularity there, even with two practices a week (weather permitting). I've played D&D a decent bit (3/3.5), but my various groups always dissolved due to scheduling (notice a recurring theme, here? sigh...). Oh, and I do a bit of contact juggling, every now and then, but it's hard to practice regularly. I think that might count, too.

What I do manage right now with fluctuating intensity is wargaming (far more hobby than play, what with only a handful of opponents all as busy as I), video games (ah, consoles - for when I feel I can waste enough time to justify it over a 5 minute flash game distraction from studying), and MMOs (I play a free fantasy one (Rappelz), and have dappled with 2 free FPSes (CrossFire and Combat Arms)). The time distribution varies greatly, assuming I have any to spare, at all.

So, yeah... that gives me 7. Pretty damn nerdy. It works for me, though.

RPG's = D&D at the moment
Video Games = DoW, CoD(like i had to list this)
Other = Prop building/costuming

I think the next poll should be "How many non-geeky activities does the average 'nerd' partake in."

ie: Shooting sports, team sports, general out door activities, and such.

I'm also a costumer (501st legion).

CCGs have never appealed to me. Neither the collecting of or the gameplay itself.

So does this prove that nerds branch out and do not become specialized in any one nerdy activity?

I agree with Morgan there should be another poll - I mean I'm sure nerds have lives outside of being geeks 24/7. Sports do exist.

I used to play videogames, now it's comics - but nowhere on that list is anime! I mean do the warhammer peeps dislike it too?

That's too bad cause there's so much good stuff. Anything by Hiyao Miyazaki like Princess Monoke, Steamboy, Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle.

Then it gets darker like Akira, Ghost In the Shell, Vampire Hunter D.

There's comedy like Ranma 1/2, and Trigun.

Escaflowne, Vampire Knight, and Video Girl Ai for those who love romance.

Something for everybody if you look - I mean its not all pokemon and for the rest of us it's not all hentai either.

Still not sold?

I play D&D every second weekend, own a rather large collection of Yu-Gi-Oh cards which I've lost interest in, on the alternate weekends to D&D I play regular board games, I've also recently gotten back into computer games, I love my Tom Clancy games and DoW (saving up for number 2). I also do fencing but I don't consider the sport itself geeky, although a lot of fencers are geeks.

That's a similar problem to me. I have watched the Miyazaki stuff, and Ranma 1/2, Escaflowne, Trigun, etc. Neither the stories nor the animation style appeals to me. Out of that list, only Akira and GiTS appealed to me.

So I have a somewhat more limited selection of anime to chose from.

I play World of Warcraft TCG and believe it or not, I only have a trial account for World of Warcraft. It's true.
If that counts its an MMORPG, I think I play some other ones.
I also play Age of Empires, Guitar Hero 3 and some other stuff.

So I have to admit that I did like Akira and the Cowboy Beebop series, but I'd like to see more Hanna Barbara esque style animation, along the lines of the original Heavy Metal movie and the like. Ninja Scroll and Vamp D was pretty cool too.

I do lots of science geek stuff, if that counts. I'm best at organic and biochem, I have a friend who does engineering and phys chem, and another who does nanotech and analytical chem (although we've each overlapped into each other's fields at times). So we'll have long involved discussions on random topics, such as 'how to build a sucessful deathtrap' or 'what would be the best method of applying this perfectly legal substance I've just made that makes sniffer dogs think you're carrying cocaine' or 'if we were genetically modifying a winged lizard, how would we go about it and what would be the best way to do this bit of anatomy'?

I suspect these count. Somehow. Especially when it sometimes includes things on 'how to build a practical, real life power weapon'. Or a rail gun. (The latter tends to trip your circuit breaker and set fire to stuff. Oops. <.< )

I have over 1,000 comics sitting in the closet of my office. Oddly that same closet contains all my books (mostly science fiction or horror), and my entire anime collection. All my 40k stuff has spots on my desk, other than my terrain which lives in the closet. Other than the few models I might have on my desk at any given time, a person wouldn't know I do any of this stuff.

@Morgan It's JAPANimation. The whole reason I enjoy it because it's not americanized. Heavy Metal was produced in Canada - which would make this a culture comparison. (But I did forget Bebop which was good too)

@chromedog I also like the darker stuff too, but is the selection of stuff you enjoy limited because it's a guy thing? Im assuming so cuz you have actually watched the afore mentioned movies. It seems men as a general audience don't appreciate fluffier disney-esque or romantic shtick

CCG - collecting MTG since like '95, used to play Doomtrooper and Star Wars too
Roleplaying games - used to play D&D and Vampire the Masquerade, now we play our own system with my group
Non-miniature based board games - not much, but I have Battletech and Talisman at home
Video / computer games (non MMORPG) - lots of them; action games, 90s turnbased strategies, RPGs
MMORPG games - I played World of Warcraft for a while but never got addicted on it

LARP always fascinated me but I never found a good group I would like to play with (Im mostly interested in modern fantasy/horrors)

ow, and as Im an occasional DJ, I collect lots of vinyls

Mostly I don't like a lot of them because I just don't get the BESM thing (Big Eyes Small Mouth) mainly. Never have, not since the Kimba the Apartheid lion* days.
I didn't read a lot of superhero comics as a kid (well, not Marvel/DC - I was more a 2000AD kid) and this had 'harder' more SF violent stories and this may have skewed my attitudes, but I never really liked 'fluffy bunny' stuff either.

I am aware there is 'girl oriented' anime and guy oriented stuff as well. Most of the 'guy oriented' stuff is as unwatchable to me as the girly stuff or daytime soaps. It's generally the juvenile level of humour in the 'guy stuff' that turns me off. 'Guy says stupid stuff, girl belts him with something' sort of thing.
I'm an ex-soldier (amongst other things) and a military hardware nerd.

As to whether it is a general 'guy thing' to not like the 'chick stuff' I can't say. I do know some (straight) guys who will watch it happily, and some girls/women who prefer GiTs/Appleseed.

*Running joke with my friends and I. We were watching "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman" or "Macross" when our peers were watching "Battle of the planets" or "Robotech".

@ chromedog Well as far as asthetics go - your allowed your opinion. In fact Kimba is a good point, however the cutsey style is appropriate sometimes.

I grew up with the hardcore stuff, as a child I was watching Ninja Scroll and Vamp Hunter D when Pokemon/Sailor Moon was still popular. And I love it!

(Appleseed is pretty tame by my standards and more of a love story - I still like it though)

My point was that the cheesy chick stuff is still good and all types of anime should be appreciated - that's all I was trying to say is viewers shouldn't limit themselves to one sub genre of animation. That's all - I completely agree with the stuff you like - I'm just saying be open-minded.

Gatchaman? That's before my time dude.

I play a lot of computer games. Very into Oblivion 4 at the moment (old but very good), and in my time I have done a lot of X-com, worms, Master of Orion (1 and 2), C&C (all of them though mostly red alert).

And although I don't any more I still listed collectable card games and MMORPG. The reason is because given the chance/time I would be all over them again (WoW and MtG).

I also do a lot of reading. I'm more into fantasy (David Gemmell...read nearly all his books) than sci-fi when it comes to that department, but on the table it's 40k all the way. However I found Lee Child's "Jack Reacher" series to be very good and I would recommend them to anyone who enjoys reading.

Action figure collecting: About 150 Generation One transformers and counting. ~70 Armada 'formers (for sale if anyone's interested)
Comic book collecting: Hundreds of comics, spanning all lines. Real bag'n'board nerd too. Recently picked up 1st edition DC run of V for Vendetta.

These days I'm only indulging in Warhammer, 40K mostly, but over the years since I was a kid I've indulged in many of the things on the survey list including:
- Civil War reenactments. I was in a reenactment group for 3 years in high school.
- Historical simulation boardgames (e.g., Avalon Hill, SPI)
- Magic The Gathering (casual only, mostly with my spouse and a few friends)
- PC Video Games (last one was DoW Dark Crusade)
- Wii console games (still do that one on occasion)
- RPGs. After getting into D&D and Traveller in college, I played and refereed RPGs with the same group of friends for 18 years. As the group was starting to split up as careers and moves finally interfered, I jumped into Warhammer since I was buying the miniatures to use with the RPGs by then anyway.
- Model Railway. When my son was small he loved the wooden railway and I spent hours playing with it with him so I'm going to include this on my list here too.
- Action Figures. Never much or seriously, but I've bought a few here and there for fun over the years.
- Board Games of a non-fantasy or wargame nature. I've always loved board games and still do. Favorites at my house are Scrabble, Sorry, Clue.

I used to play MTG competitively, now I just come up with the ocassional weird deck (shaman-wolves being the last one) with my friends.

I have so many comics that my floor will crumble one day as well xD

And if that doesn't brings all down, I have tongs of leather, wires and steel sheets for my armour making stuff xD

In the meanwhile I play role playing games (say, World of Darkness mainly).

And as an active soldier, I'm not attracted to modern warfare as a hobby, I guess that having them at work spoils my fun with it xD

Roleplaying, absolutely. I have too many books, which means most of the Vampire, Werewolf and all Wraith books from the old World of Darkness (new one sucks!). Also have Dark Heresy and picked up Rogue Trader the other day. Seems to be alot better than Heresy in my book!

I also reenact German Fallschirmjäger WWII (no nazi! O_O) which has recently forced me to ignore the new Skaven since I need some new equipment. Have to settle for the old rats for now |=p

I am an avid WoW Player (addicted since may '05 >.< ) and also like to do the table top RP thing when I can. I did the CCG thing for a while but have stopped due to budget and time constraints.

My write in is collecting Anime DVDs. Atm my collection is probably just over 300 DVDs and it grows a little each month. Current favorites are Claymore, Black Lagoon, and Irresponsible Captain Tylor TV.

I gotta give big props to Binky for mentioning Ranma 1/2, classic. The Original Bubblegum Crisis deserves a mention in classic anime as well.

Cheers,
~Volkan

I play lots of silly card games with my friends on the rare occasions when We get together. Mostly Fluxx and Munchkin.
I'm also collecting an army for AT-43. I haven't found an opponent yet, but I really like the rules. I must not be a WAAC gamer, because I don't think there are as many glaring rules problems as other people are constantly bitching about. It's waaaay better than 40K.

Write in for collecting cross-section art books.

I have all the Star Wars ones, most of the Star Trek ones, and other assorted sci fi posters and such. Not sure why I am fascinated by them, but I am.

CCGs - I play L5R
RPGs - DnD 4E, L5R, Rougue Trader and Serenity RPG.

Wargaming and boardgames - very very rarely now

Where I live we have a very small group of RPGer's called the Manchurian Syndicate, we do RPGs once or twice a week, and there is one other guy who plays CCGs; but no one right now who actually plays wargames. Sigh -- NorthEast China is a bit of a wasteland for most games. I even have a shiny new Space Hulk box, and no one to play with.

Other then wargaming, I do collect MTG and do occasional Gurps RPGs. I also play WoW and collect comic books, currently, I'm trying to find all the BSG comics (newest series).
I'm also a connoisseur of fine b rated zombie flicks.

Non geeky stuff, I love photography, especially of abandoned buildings.

Other than 40k I enjoy mostly video games on PC of which I have absolutely masses of but my favourites have to be the Total War series. I used to collect comics but I stopped a few years ago as I ran out of storage space and something had to give. They were mostly Marvel comics, Iron Man, Spidey and Wolverine plus the Freak Brothers series.

I love board games when I get a chance, Monopoly, Space Hulk and Deal or no deal (I know, I know).

Only fantasy and 40k at the moment, and then only collecting and not much playing.

At one point in time I played

CCG - Magic
RPG - D&D, Deadlands, and others
boardgames - lots and card games
video games on PC - my favorite were the Baldur's Gate games
MMORPG games - only City of Heroes
Action figures - I guess I still have some star wars, g.i. joe, and legos
Comic Books - favorites were Poison Elves, Forgotten Realms, Deadpool, and Gen 13; but collected a lot more.

I guess if I had the money and time I would still want to do all of these things.

I checked videogames, RPGs (mostly DnD) and Other.

The Other would be airsoft. Some of my kit can be seen in my avatar. I love it. Complete adrenaline rush. The way I play is sort of LARPish, as well. I mean, I've been on teams that bring tactics used in the real world to the field, and some have had formalized rank structures.

I've also had an on and off relationship with World of Warcraft, EVE Online, DnD Online, but I didn;t check the box, as i haven;t playe those in a while.

I've played CCGs in my youth. Magic cards, Pokemon Cards, and more recently I picked up the WoW CCG.

And of course my fav MMO - Pardus.

I used to play various CCGs like Pokemon, Yugi-Oh etc. but that was years ago.

After reading the poll, i realized how not completely nerdy I am! Hurrah! I think...

Okay quick question(s)?
What's LARP and AFV? And what do role playing games entail? Because after seeing video games listed as another category, I wasn't sure as to what it could be, is it like D&D?

And after finding this poll, and after reading through all 4 pages of comments, I think it's safe to say that many nerds have come out to strut their stuff. It may just be the personal topics that have the greatest turnouts of people. Maybe people just want to be known, or maybe some are trolls... i'unno, i'ma troll...

For me, its:
MtG ( i have one green deck, and i excel in multiplayer matches, because people forget about me...)
and video games (TF2, Mass effect 2, sad to say CoD, and others, I like any game, even if it sucks)
I've been meaning to get into anime, I did watch about 75% of FMA, and FLCL (it was awesome!!!) but I'm staying away from it, because i don't need another distraction from university.

I'm trying to downsize. I'm not big into computer gaming although I like to muck about with a mate from home on Counter Strike.

Magic I enjoy casually but want to sell most of my cards and just keep a few fun decks.

I would like to do more wargaming but lack of opponents and opportunities has me at a disadvantage.

DnD generally 1/week

I do loads on that list, I have some CCGs, I was big on the decipher Star Wars one back in the day, I have a few roleplaying games and D&D books which I hope to get involved with when we find a group, I collect model railways, I build regular plastic kits of all sorts, I have a lot of action figures and I buy some comics (mainly Daredevil).

Came to the poll a bit late, I would have ticked six things.

Video games - have lots of classic consoles and games for them - NES, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, all PS's. And have some classic PC games. Also the newer stuff. And about 40 Nintendo DS games (F the R4)

Comics - I have probably 2,000-3,000 in storage (probably need to store them somewhere else) and have been reading them on and off the past few years, but just this past couple months or so have got back in to them pretty dedicately. Mostly Marvel for contemporary comics, lots of old Image stuff in collection along w/ pretty much 90% X-Men titles.

Action Figures - I'm not really a "collector" i suppose. I have lots from my childhood, but as for collecting, I have a few on display and a few valuable ones in their boxes somewhere.

Since people are saying their non-geek hobbies, mine include playing w/ my limited guitar skills, crying over how bad the 49ers are, and following/watching the NBA, NCAA football, and European soccer. As well as playing sports on a rare occasion (definitely not as much as i used to). ...And eating. I love eating.

These days I've had to scale back to just 40k and the Xbox (final year at University..) so that means that Airsoft has to go on hold for a year or two.

plus larp - costumes. referred to as battling. all the wailing on eachother with foam swords and none of the shame inducing costumes or "acting"
I remember magic, but nobody plays it anymore. now every nerd i know plays that god awful world of warcraft. I see them a lot less coincidentally. probably due to them being strapped to that lifewaste of a game (that i am ashamed to have tried!)

I play videogamses, mostly real time strategy games, and some FPSs. Most FPSs I use as more 'social' games though, things to play with a bunch of people around.

I want to get into RPGs, and next year I'm meant to join in a Dark Heresy game one of my game club's members is running so that should be fun.

To be honest, the thing I do that I consider the geekiest is cosplay.
So far, I've done Russia from Hetalia, the Nostalgia Critic, and Hair Guy from Yu-Gi-Oh abridged. Planned cosplays include a Commissar, and maybe Bandit Keith.

I pick up he occassional video game, and almost never at launch (just now going through Dragon Age 2, Alan Wake, and Lego Star Wars.) In high school, I could be counted on to buy at least a box of boosters from any game Decipher made (I loved the really complex and sometimes bewildering Star Wars and Star Trek CCGs, but really had some good times with their short-lived Austin Powers game.) I run a Dresden Files game for a few friends, and I pick up a board game every so often, lately it's just been the Deck Building games like Resident Evil, Penny Arcade, and Star Trek.

I've dabbled in comics, played WoW for a good long while, and done abunch of other things. Nothing keeps me quite like hobby miniature games, though.

Modelling mostly everything!

Model railways, Tanks, boats, Planes, classic/modern cars, hell i even rebuilt a mechanno steam engine once.

I also love card games such as Flux (excellent game) and Munchkin.

I do Wars of the Roses re enactment and i'm currently a mercenary in the Woodville Household. I have also served as an infantryman with he 19th Indiana volunteers regiment, although I couldn't continue as the musket and powder were just too expensive.

I also collect war memorobelia and my collection stands as follows:
Soviet hat pin, Soviet naval officers hat, soviet 40th anniverserie victory medal, soviet 50 and 70 years of the red army medal (with papers), soviet order of the patriotic war 2nd class, british 1939/1945 star, Durham light infantry cap badge, RAF Badge, 2 9mm bullet casing, a .303 bullet casing and dud round. A WW1 christmas tin the army gave to soldiers in 1914 which was full of tabacco or choclate. (mines from the same part of the lines as the famous football matches. A Luftwaffe Dagger, 2 Nazi Deutchmarks (1D and 10D, both have the nazi eagles on them and 2 16 centuary cannonballs (one 4 pound shout, the other 6 pound shot)

oh and a medal given to the people who participated in the cleanup of chernobyl (with papers)

I AM NOT A NAZI! i collect war memrobelia and this includes nazi stuff, we need to remeber this period in history and study it so we may reconise what is happening if it happens again.

I am trying to build up a collection of medals my grandfather had (1939/1945 star, africa star with 1st army clasp, italian star and the victory medal) my grandad served in the durhum light infantry and his stuff is in their museum, i wanted to collect some of the stuff he had. preferably the medals will be unmarked and unissued, i feel wrong having someone elses medal, unless they are no longer here, in which case i will preseve it for them

I am also collecting the anniversary of the red army awards and soviet victory medals.

I have a few swords also, including a samuri sword (who hasnt got one) a gladius, a lord of the rings orc sword, a claymore, a rapier, a 15th centuary hand an a half, a 15 centuray hand sword, 2 15th centuary spears.

a longer post than i was expecting to post

Played a lot of games considered classic games now, since I got into console/computer-games when a Atari VCS was new hardware....
Kept that stuff so I may play some games from Atari VCS , C 64 , Amiga , plus emulated arcade machines and a few PC games. Stopped caring when content lost to design and FX as the major hotness in gaming.
Model railway as a family tradition thing and also pretty common over here.
Still collecting WW2 era waterline ships in 1/700.

Model Railroading, RC Cars, RC Helicopters, RC Planes (NONE of the RCs were the "toy" RCs), Custom Built Computers.

I was actually recruited into the wargaming by showing off pics of my model railroad.

Technically I suppose it's wargaming related, but I'm collecting super-heavies now... I made a warlord titan, and then a stompa, now I'm considering either another warlord or a thunderhawk gunship. The links for each build are in my sig.

Besides 40k, I do some stuff from the listed categories:
CCGs: I have dabbled in MTG, but I don't play competitive. Commander format is awesome, and has supplied me and some friends with plenty of late-night entertainment. I also collect and play some out-of-date card games like Decipher's old Star Wars CCG.
Board Games: Gotta love Halo Wars Risk, but the main one I play is Star Fleet Battles (which is not for the faint of heart, the rules are more complex than any other game I've encountered!).
Video Games: I play just about anything in this category.
MMORPGs: The only one I play is RuneScape. It's cheaper than WoW, but it is still great fun.

Oh, and I also collect legos, but I've put that on the back burner to save money for more 40k stuff!

My weirdest collection is probably Pokemon in hats.

Alright, to elaborate, every year at the Pokemon Worlds tournament, they make a special pikachu to represent the home state of the tournament. Hawaii got him with a tiki mask, Boston got him with some kind of spyglass and a period costume, Toronto he had a headdress, etc.
They're pretty cool, and make very good investment pieces.
I've got a small Ikea picture frame shelf with them sat up there.

Well, wargaming isn't really happening for me anymore - no groups near me and uni wallops my wallet far too often for my liking. But MtG is (comparatively) cheap, since I only really play casually. The entire flat bar me is pretty into comics, so I'm slowly absorbing knowledge by osmosis, and we play some RPGs once or twice a week, mostly Pathfinder or Mutants and Masterminds.
I play computer games as well, still digging the Witcher 3.

As for non-geeky stuff, I used to be a target shooter when I was in high school. Ended up top juniour in the South Pacific for 3 positional scoped rifles. Now, with no money, I only shoot occasionally. I'm also a huge circus and magic guy, love me some aerials.
