I am hitting binny's beverage depot on thursday when I roll into town from the milwaukee airport.

I'm bringing my Fallen Angels to the Gladiator (and Championship, if I get lucky with the waiting list), and will be running around in a black Cold Steel Mercs t-shirt, along with around seven other guys. We've got two teams again this year, "Enlisted Men" (IG) and "Crusaders" (SW & SM crusade army). I'm one of the Space Wolf players this year. I'm six feet tall and slender, with a widow's peak and a straight brown ponytail down past my waist. I'll put Mannahnin on my badge.

You can still come, if you’re local. There are a metric ton of seminars and other events, and if you haven’t been before, the Team Tourney at least is well worth seeing just for the spectacle of the displays and everything.

I'm playing in the Warbands midday tournament on Friday (That should be a laugh considering my experience at Fantasy, I expect a drubbing). Saturday we took the day off this year so I'll be roaming. Sunday I'll be in the 40k championship. I think I had them add my nick to my badge this year but if not I'll write it in.

My schedule is weird.

All you night owls can watch me lose game after game in both Warmachine tournaments (the midnight ones).

Also running demos by day. Going to try to catch sleep (ha!) between demos and tournament.

I fly into Midway at 3:45pm and hitch a ride with my teammates Yackface and Jathkin to Lombard, IL.

I have a seminar that night where we will be discussing tactics, and after that I will be playing a demo game against Spacecurves who is the captain of the American ETC team.

Friday
I start my day with the Gladiator Tournament. Not my favorite event by any means, but there is nothing else going on during the day, and I have to play in it if I want to be a part of the ETC.

Then after that wraps up at 10:00pm I am going to Golden Demon winner Chris Borer's seminar on how to paint better. I want to get some tips on painting red and gold for my upcoming pre-heresy Thousand Sons. That seminar should get out around midnight.

Saturday
This is where the pain begins. I am use to going to bed at 1 or 2am Pacific Time, so when I go to Chicago I just lay in bed until my body knows it's time for sleep which is 3:00am Central Time.

Then I get up to play in the Team Tournament at 6:30am (4:30am PST). They want us down there and set up at 7:00am. Then what we do before the first game at 9:00am is go to breakfast together. Since team Dakka Dakka Detachment #1 is one of the rare teams that do not live near each other, this is our one time to go over the army, and have a brief talk about strategy. For the first time we are going to be joined by team Dakka Dakka Detachment #2 at the breakfast, and we will try to help them out as much as possible.

Then 4 more games and we get out at 10:00pm. This is the one time I have to go out to dinner with all of the tournament regulars I see around at all of major tournaments. Since GW canceled their GTs we don't have a chance to really hang out anymore and this is the one time we are together.

Sunday
So after a late dinner, we are up again at 6:30am (4:30 pst) and get ready for the 40K championships that start at 7:00am.

I am glad that I took Monday off and I do not have to run to the Airport like I always have to do on Sunday night, and I can relax a bit.

Then later that night they are having an after con mixer/poker tournament that I signed up for.

Monday
I get to sleep in and take my time heading to the airport.

I will say the same thing that I always do like "I am never going to play in all of the 40k games again".

I have a seminar that night where we will be discussing tactics, and after that I will be playing a demo game against Spacecurves who is the captain of the American ETC team.

In which case I shall be at the back with some friendly heckling, and then I'll be taking furious notes during your demo game to see how good Spacecurves is and whether we need to be worried in Germany

I'm playing just one army this year across all three days - Guard. I'll be in a Cold Steel Merc shirt on Saturday and on Friday you'll see me walking around with a British flag shirt

I'll be arriving sometime Friday with Platuan4th. On Saturday, Dakka Detachment 2 will be the guys in the Dakka shirts, that look cooler than the guys from Dakka Detachment 1.

This is where the pain begins.

Blackmoor for 2010 there is a Friday evening check in for the Saturday Team Tourney, it does not need to be such an early morning unless you want it to be.

Thursday

At nine PM myself and three of my team mates board a car to drive from Orlando, Florida to Lombard.

Friday

After driving all night and into the day, we get to Adepticon mid afternoon. We grab our hotel room, and generally try and hang out/recover as best we can.

Saturday

7:00 AM We are up for the Team Tournament under the name "Frosty Treats".

Sunday

My team gets a rest while I get up at 7:00 AM again to participate in the 40k Championships with my Salamanders. Once the tournament ends and we are finished, it's time to hop in the car again and drive through the night.

Monday

I took the day off, but hopefully we get back at a reasonable time and I can rest before work the next day.


If you are looking for me, I resemble a slightly over weight Clark Kent with a Green Lantern Shirt on.

I'll be running the AWC Invitational on Friday at 5:00.

On Saturday look for me in the team event playing for Team Handsome - I'll be the guy with Zero_Cool written in on his name badge.

Friday: Classes at 1230-230, and 8pm-10pm. In between meeting for dinner with friends(between their classes they are teaching and such).
Saturday: Team tourney then catching a friends GSing class from 10pm-12am
Sunday:40k championships and then back home to go back to work

If you're on the waiting list next time, be sure to come down anyway. I was 20 places deep and easily made it in. A lot of folks on the waiting list don't bother to show up, and a lot of folks registered can't make it due to exhaustion or hangover.

Yeah, I found that out. I was 46 on the list and I got up at 7 and figured there was no way I would get in. Then I was told only 6 guys form the list showed up and they all got in.

Oh well.

I was beat. Everyone who saw me mentioned how tired I looked.

I want to be pretty when meeting people I mostly know from the Internet.

I got to see a lot of people I already have met before (Redbeard, Ragnar, yakface, Augustus, Centurion99, Blackmoor, GMMStudios, etc.) and also met a lot of new peoples (skipper, AgeofEgos, etc.). It was an awesome time for sure!

Dakka Detachment #1 has been competing in the team tournament for five years now (I think?), and we've done pretty darn well each year for a bunch of guys who have absolutely zero ability to practice together throughout the year due to the fact that none of us live in the vicinity of each other.

This year another 4 guys on Dakka decided to pick up the mantle and join us as a team formed via this website and they did pretty darn good for their first outing, but in overall standings DD1 did manage to do better this year.

So the detachment 'numbers' (1, 2, etc) are essentially designated by duration of annual attendance rather than performance. So even if (when?) DD2 manages to place higher than DD1 at a future Adepticon we'd still be DD1 simply because we were the first Dakka team to attend Adepticon.

Haha, just kidding, it was great to represent Dakka as detachment 2. I know our team is amped to go again and perform better. Middle of the pack isn't bad, especially considering out inexperience and the fact that we drew tough opponents every round.

In the end though, it was just plain fun. We had a great time and I totally encourage other players to come and give it a go. Definitely worth the time and money.

Next year I'm bringing a piece of paper and making flow charts to keep those scenario objectives straight.

We also have to remember to keep our eyes on the Objective prize, which was something I think we forgot about sometimes(like not loading into Valks and stealing opponents Objectives that they can't guard).

Nothing, really, although this was year 5 for DD1. I tried to organize a Dakka team in 2005, which fell apart about 2 months beforehand (would have been Me, Mauleed, Russ-god, and Jason Francis, IIRC). Next year, I tried again, and Janthkin, Yakface, and Blackmoor all stepped up (and were willing to buy plane tickets and send me their registration fees at once)...and we've been a team since then. We've managed to win Best Team Tacticians and Headhunters, and have placed in the top 10 teams 4 of 5 years. Last year...we ran into the Team Toledo wall, and crashed and burned in round 4, or else we were looking at an overall. *sigh* From #2 going into round 4 to somewhere in the 20s-30s, IIRC.

At least we beat Team Toledo in battle this year...so Greg gets to buy me a steak dinner next time I visit him. For the last three years, Greg and I (as theoretical Captains of our respective teams) have had a standing bet on the Team Tourney: Highest Battle points buys the steak, Highest overall chooses the location. We're trying to work on the terms of a...slightly different bet for next year.

DD2 got started this year...very respectable showing for their first year together. DD1 had the advantage of having 2 players who'd played in the TT beforehand, so we could brief Yakface and Blackmoor on all the little tricks and such that make the TT different than a normal tourney.

DD3...who knows. About the only "rule" is that you have to be a member of dakka, and really you should be a DCM (because that's where most of the semi-public planning discussions go on. DD1 is always willing to share info with other dakka teams.

I was a DCM, just haven't re-upped the past year(mostly due to moves and Adepticon itself, ironically).

Ozy and I did a Fantasy TT Dakka Detachment(I guess you could call us DD1) this year, so I don't see why not.

There's always people saying they'll form another DD, the thing is actually getting them committed to going(which is why this was the first year for a DD2). DD2 was going to go in 09, but events conspired to keep it from happening(even after going through 5 or 6 members).

That said, I hope you guys('specially Lorek, who's been clamoring for a team) DO get DD3 up and running. More DD's mean more Dakka love.

@Platuan4th - yeah, I can see how that could be an issue.

Guess there just needs more enticement. Or something. Maybe we can promise that Malfred will let us touch his manbag if DD3 actually happens.

I feel stupid now, because I do remember your Orks.

I'm gonna just go back into my corner and continue modeling Thousand Sons(and lamenting my lack of Khopesh bits for them)...

Yeah, the trick is pretty much getting people to buy their tickets (especially flights) as soon as possible. Its amazing how much that helps.
