Greetings everyone.
Savlar Chem-Dogs are an underrated army in my opinion. They have some great fluff and potential for interesting models - what can be more versatile than Emperor-sanctioned marauders, always high on chems and allowed to keep anything they loot? Sadly, Savlars had no official minis, and recieve little love from modellers out there.
But this is good.
This means one can make a Savlar army that will stand out!
This blog will be dedicated to my Savlar regiment which recieved the number CDIV (404) for a reason - they are not only a semi-outlaw gang that's been let loose in an hostile underhive to be a thorn in enemy's side. They've been left behind as the said hive was bombarded into nothingness with the rest of the planet's surface.
But it takes more than a nuclear barrage to get rid of roaches and Savlars.
What I originally had in mind for this army was good old post-nuclear style. Savlars themselves look enough like a gang of wasteland raiders, but I decided to throw in a few more cool things:
Volunteers. 404th would probably replenish their numbers with local gangers and other scum that survived as well and now are reduced to scavengers. Think of this as of Mad Max's Lord Humongous's Dogs of War - several raider tribes united by a former military man. Of course, 'volunteers' lack proper uniform and iconic chem-inhalers - something they will fight to earn.
Civilian/non-IG vehicles. Savlars are never mechanized. They may have tank support of their own, maybe even rare stuff such as plasma LRs, they surely have Hellhounds and the like, but they don't ride into battle on Chimeras or fly on Valkyries. But this doesn't mean they can't use some local vehicles redone into armored carriers for their needs. Chimeras and Banewolves in my army are scratchbuilt, resembling Necromunda comic armored trucks.
Girls! Yes, where would have we been without Tank Girl and her 40k sister Chem-Chan - latter being the sole reason that made me go Savlar. This army will have lots of girls, converted from various model ranges to fit the style.
But enough talking. Let me show you some pics.
First of all, the mascot of the army, drawn by most talented Igorvet, Comissar Kira:
 [
Here is here miniature:
The Full-Metal General.
Collab paintjob with Ringil and Girelle.
The General is a heavily converted Arbiter leader model.
Regimental standard. ( PG-13)
Done by my friend DAHR in digital freehand and printed (I'm not waving original piece of art on a gaming table).
Command Squad:
Platoon:
Veterans:
Conscripts:
Yarrick the guest star:
And last but not the least, my Savlar/ PA costume And an artwork by Fleatrollus.

Excellent start, I liked the chem-dogs fluff in the rulebook myself.
I suspect House Escher will be your friend in this endeavour...
Anything with techno-fetish girls with bunches of dreads, goggles and masks is going to win happy points from me.

Judging by what you have so far, I'm guessing this army is not PG 13?

Even though 'woohoo! boobies!' isn't something I usually mix with 40k, that banner is really, really well painted. Good job! I think you should rethink having an actual bikini-commissar in your army though. It just doesn't make sense. How long do you think a hot woman dressed like that would maintain her authority in a regiment of violent criminals? Until she fell asleep, probably.
27919
Post by: DRommel
@MeanGreenStompa - Thanks. I will consider Escher when I have a chance to get them, but there are much more sources of female models I used - Infinity Ariadna and Foundry Street Violence to name a few.
@Tim the Biovore - there will be some occasional nudity, nothing more obscene than this banner. Boobs are not Slaanesh's monopoly!
@I-bounty-hunt-the-elderly - this is a pinup pic. Her actual model will have more clothes and armor.

Once again, thank you.
Ordering stuff from online shops is a bit of a problem, so I have to do with with what I can get here in Moscow. But I'll keep an eye for these heads, there was also another set done by Maxmini IIRC which had slightly better proportion.
Having goggles and gas masks helps btw, I converted a few female heads from deamonettes and (oh noes) wolf scouts... well, latter are small, semi-shaved and wearin visors ^^ Only had to changed the lower part.
And Chronoscope mini is great! I'll look out for this!

A small quibble, but is that plasma pistol just suspended in mid-air on the side of the base in the first pics? It looks a little out of place. Otherwise, a cool concept and neat-looking conversions and minis

Gads, I forgot how much I love Savlar ... Great work so far, gas masks + chicks ftw Really dig what an industrial mess your leader is, and that banner is pretty ace, if a bit clean / bright compared to the rest of your army.
Keep up the good work, you've got me looking back at my own Chem Dogs from long long ago ...

Well done, I really like what you have done so far.
I'm also doing a Savlar army, although my interpretation is a bit different. The difficult thing with an army like this is getting the balance right: they are an Imperial army and so need a certain amount of uniformity in order to be recognised as a Guard regiment (and let's face it: being uniform is pretty central to the Guard), but also diverse enough (both as an army and individual models) to be proper Savlar.
I would recommend picking up the Escher pieces and/or the Troll Forged female ganger - I've got some of these models ready to be converted as Savlar veterans myself. Only thing I would note is the the Escher are solid one-piece metal models, so head swaps and adding gasmasks is a bit of a pain if you're doing it for a lot of models.

DRommel, i found the thread with the model i mentioned earlier, the OP of the thread is doing a female guard army, it might give you some inspiration for stuff. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/287774.page#1468461
keep up the good work! I like the rag tag look of the "volunteers".

Post by: DRommel
Thanks. I think I will order this one, she's almost a perfect commissar, only needing a hat and a gas mask, and maybe a ccw in her left hand.
Models posted by TaintedMess are okay too, but I'm afraid the german girls are a bit too thin. I'll look out for caped one though.
And metal heads = no problem for adding gas masks, cadian (from command squad) fit nicely.
By the way, what do you think of the armor of my vets? I'm using them as carapace-clad, yet they're of course less armored compared to official kasrkins...
11980
Post by: Commissar Agro
They look good but i think they might need a little bit more armour, like GS knee pads or elbow pads.
I just remebered by firend started a IG army a while ago and made gas masks, i now own them and the look good for a simle gas mask conversion. heres the link for the details.

Update time! First, WIP girls. Bootom right has her jacket torn by a grot (more boobie flashing!) Made from various metal minis with a lot of cutting and putty work. Obviously will have missing weapons and body parts added. Next, some WIP underhive scum that will be used as conscripts. Made from Warlord celt bodies and various FB bits. Of course, all will get 25mm bases. And last, some misc stuff. An inquisitor I converted for a friend, said friend's IG beastman (lizardman) and carapace armored girl. I got a bunch of these converted lizardmen and have plans to convert them further for a krogan lookalike, and use them as vets or stormies in carapace...

Great concept - you've got such a great range of models to draw on you can create a really original force. The trick I think will be making it different from the various "traitor guard" armies out there. I think you really need to play up the imperial stuff - more eagles, more commissars, maybe some inquisitional allies?
8745
Post by: Llamahead
Actually Kestral I think the lack of difference between them and the traitors is rather funky in that whole Inquisitorial Radical become what you hunt type of way.....

Thanks a lot for femal model ideas. I think Inifinity models I used are closer to 30-32mm as they're taller (yet thinner) than plastic IG, but they do fit quite well.
Will see if I can get some of Taban minis. I also considered Cpt. Olivia Newton model from AT-43 but couldn't find hi-res pics of her, how good is her casting? (as I've seen AT-43 soldiers and they look like rubber toys... low detail level and soft plastic).
The General is armed with ccw and shotgun, and his girl is carrying a plasma pistol as I use Straken rules, he has these three weapons (but adding all 3 on a single model was a pain so I added a pistol carrier ^^)

Post by: DRommel
Thankyou. I'll post more pics as I finish repainting, but you can look at the older version here: http://coolminiornot.com/234728
Same as with the sentinel, I decided to go for bright green, yet also added a lot of rust - note the corrosion on the hull as the tank supposedly ran over a chem barrel and the acid stained its hull.
The mine roller is made from rear wheels of an old soviet 1:30 ISU-152 toy. It's now produced again and I think you can get one on ebay, it's sold in every toy store here in Russia ^^
I plan to use the mine roller as dozer blade, and its purpose is to provide stability to the overweight front part.

Ah, but seeing how they covered up the daemonettes in favor of the hideous new plastics, what makes you think GW has the BALLS to make the Chem Dogs?

What does that statue base say? I can make out 'For Lil' G......and (D?)ala.....'
27919
Post by: DRommel
The writing says 'For Lil' Girl and Salamander'. It's an easter egg/inside joke, basically the commissar depicts a friend of mine, whose diorama (a salamander marine reading a holy book to a little refugee girl on Armageddon) was horribly underrated on 2008 Games Day competition despite being very cool. This year, I put this monstrosity partly as an act of revenge on GD judges ^^
Speaking of which, it of course didn't win anything, but got some attention and nice comments. I'll put up pics when I get them.
And as for GW making Chem-dogs... PLEASE NO.
I gave up on orks for one reason. GW loved them all of sudden.
You know, when you spend a few years converting one set of plastic orks into tons of unique stuff and do crazy scratchbuilt models, then suddenly they release tons of sweetest plastic and all you need is pay pay pay. And even if you still put lots of work in conversions, nobody will care, as to non-orks scratchbuilt stuff and lamely converted GW plastic looks all the same.
Trust me, I had my reasons to quit greenskins and gor for an IG regiment that doesn't have a single official model.
BTW, here's my old orkyness. Now collecting dust.

I too would like to see the diorama - I enjoy the more thoughtful explorations of the 40K universe that don't necessarily involve mass carnage. I hear you on ork plastic - now every truck looks the same, and a "cool ork conversion" is sticking a couple of bitz on the stock model. Propa' ork trucks are toys with plasticard on them! Time was, every battlewagon was unique. Now they bore me. Keep the faith though - your ork stuff is great.

I like that diorama. Though I think two things would have made it better. Actual Scaling the marine and having a smaller book. The impact of the diorama's situation is severely damaged by how the Space Marine's own impact is reduced by the sizes. Having a larger marine and a smaller book would increase the contrast between Super Human and child.
On another note; where did the model for the child come from?
27919
Post by: DRommel
First of all. As I said, this is my friend's diorama. I told him of this thread and here's what he has to say.
What gave me the idea of creating this diorama... Honestly? Weeping romantic sentimentalism. When my friend suggested that he wanted what I would do a diorama on the contest for him, that he would be able to paint, I said that it must be original, and what could be more original than the sentimentalism in the universe where every second character totally bad ass. I have considered that compared to Ultramarines overcoming hordes of enemies, little girl and Salamander will look original and interesting. The contrast with all this vanity crap.
Or am I just was longing for light, pure senses in the universe, where the developers say thet don't have a place.
The diorama scenario was taken from my first Warhammer fan fiction piece, about a refugee camp and salamanders that guard it. Nothing more, just pure human emotions. And I guess ... I did not suspect that will be the buzz around such trifles.
My deep-deep gratitude to all!
Cheers
Zellari
P.S. The book is marine size. They have huge tomes.

And a side project. A friend convinced me to play some Kill Team, so here is a Brute Boss (I'll use him in my main army though too, possibly as a sarge) and two of eldar pirate kill team.
Still not decided what to put in eldar left hands. As guardians or DE wariors have no ccws.

27919
Post by: DRommel
Thanks.
The base model is a Lanard toy tank (COPRS Recoil Vehicle IIRC), not *too* cheap - roughly Chimera price. Still, it's huge, nicely detailed and almost exactly fits Baneblade size.
The only drawback is very poor detail of chassis, that's why I went for track covers.
Here's a new WIP shot of it. The door trophy is an easter egg ^^
And Executioner gun was made of toy rocket, some bits and flate cable.

What do you think of sponsons/track covers? I aimed at a combination of German super-heavy tanks (Maus, Ratte) and Chimera, as it's essentially a super-heavy APC. Also, note the flamer turrets, separat from sponsons.

Post by: Illumini
Cool muties, but I would suggest playing them as penal legion instead. Conscripts is pretty much the worst choice in the entire IG book. Penal legion fits them well and should make them more playable
17710
Post by: Yggdrasil
@Illumini : could you explain you point of view? Though I am not planning to play them, I don't see why you consider conscripts to be the worst choice in the codex... Cannon Fodder has always had its uses!!!!
22619
Post by: inmygravenimage
Briefly, though this is more Tactic-y: they run away, they can't hit a thing, and are generally considered a waste of points. Penal legion are unpredicatable, cheap, and can drive your opponent to distraction, which is both valuable and hilarious.
13664
Post by: Illumini
You can get 20 conscripts with Bs/Ws 2, Ld5, no option for commissar or heavy weapons, or you can pay 20 pts more and get 20 guardsmen with Bs/Ws 3, Ld8, options for commissar and heavy weapons, option to blob or not, option for power weapons on the sarge, a sarge, option for chimera. Conscripts need a lord commissar to keep them in line, adding up to more than the guardsmen with commissar and he can be singled out. There is not a single thing the conscripts can do that the normal infantry can't do tons better.
17710
Post by: Yggdrasil
Thanks, I just wanted to see your point... I have no experience with them, so...
9389
Post by: lord marcus
Conscripts are a background driven addition, in my view. In this those scavvies work well.
15799
Post by: terribletrygon
Well, Scavvies work well either way. Heck, if anything they work better as penal legion, as you can represent the 'Handlers' that keep them in line, and, as said, they are unpredictable, which strikes me as being quite fitting.
17710
Post by: Yggdrasil
I vote for Penal Legion as well, for both reasons terribletrygon just mentioned!
29035
Post by: bforber
Conscripts are cheap bubble wrap for your tanks if you play an infantry+armored list. Send in the next wave isn't exactly horrible, either.
Anyway, on topic, those look totally awesome.
27919
Post by: DRommel
Thank you.
While conscripts are overpriced somewhat, they play really nice with Chenkov's special rule. Enemy HtH troops wading into a blob of conscripts only to have latter vanish, exposing them to some heavy firepower.
And don't underestimate big blobs, in general. 80-100 man platoons (max regulars and conscrpts) tie up and devour anything. Taking heavy losses, but that's how it works.
Or I may, in fact, try using them as penal troopers. Usually savlars are penals, but in all-savlar army they need someone worse than regular troopers to do the dirty job!
Oh, and by the way, their look is hardly something attributed to Chaos only. Imperial underhivers generally look like that, and some sanctioned muties even worse.
27919
Post by: DRommel
A prototype Stormtrooper.
Since Stormtroopers are generally specially trained commandos assigned to other regiments, I decided to go for a more hi-tech, sinister yet still PA look. Bonus points if you guess the source of inspiration (and this is not the game you thought of)

I can just see it now the bastion commander about to zero in the artillery on the approaching Orks and then the Commissar yelling "belay that order their the Savlar".
"But they look like Ork vehicles"
"How many Ork vehicles do you know that graffiti their tanks with pin-up pictures?"

I didn't like savlar dogs, now I do!
But I would have used another theme colour as the green leads ones thoughts over to Nurgle. But one the other hand, if it was red we would all be thinking Khorne.

Looks good. I like that you used forage caps instead of helmets. It makes them look more distinctive from other IG in general, and adds a nice professional contrast between them and the regiment's regulars.

Great to see you back, Drommel! Great kitbashing on the new guys, as I've learned to expect from your blog (seriously, it's really impressive!). The character that uses parts of the priest /w chainsaw is my favourite - it's a model I really like and have had for a while, and would never have thought of cutting up like that, but he really suits your theme. Really looking forward to seeing what you've been up to while you've been away!
