Post by: CT GAMER

So I have been teaching my oldest son Owen ( almost nine) how to play 40K this past year and a half and he has picked it up surprisingly fast.

He has a budding Ultramarines force and has enjoyed fighting against my newly started orks.

His younger brother Griffin (almost five) has also demanded models of his own and being somewhat of a a tank/army nut already he has chosen Imperial guard (oh my aching wallet) and so you may see him pushing a few figs around in our batreps as well...

We have decided that it would be fun to play a custom 40K campaign pitting these two forces against each other as a backdrop for our games and a way to link them together and add a little motivation to get things painted and so forth.

With Summer approaching and hopefully more free time we hope to kick things off with some actual batreps in the very near future...

THE CAMPAIGN MAP:

CURRENT CAMPAIGN WIN TALLY: IMPERIUM 2 ORKS 2

This map will be a visual tally record of how many games we have played and who won them. As we play some games it will have markers added to record numebr of games and who won each one.

GAME FORMAT AND MISSION SELECTION:

GAME FORMAT:

1.) Roll 1d6

1: Orks choose game format

2-3: City Fight

4-5: Standard 40k game

6: Imperium chooses game format

CITY FIGHT:
1.) Roll 1d6 for Mission Level: 1-2 Alpha, 3-4 Gamma, 5-6 Omega
2.) Choose Mission: roll on p.16 of COD book (6: roll off to pick any COD mission)

STANDARD 40K:
1.) Roll 1d6

1: Orks pick any mission from rulebook, or any ork mission from Battle Missions
2-3: Random mission from rulebook
4-5: Random mission from battle Missions
6: Imperium picks any mission from rulebook, or any Space marine mission from Battle Missions

Being that my boys are young and new to 40k, the campaign I have devised is not ultra-complex, but will i think serve it's purpose of introducing him to the concept of campaign play in 40k (something he is familiar with from PC/console gaming to some degree) and give us a chance to post some pics now and then (the boyz get a kick out of seeing our stuff posted on Daka).

CAMPAIGN FLUFF:

NOTE: The Bavgad system is located in the same subsector as Medusa V, and this campaign takes place during the same time period that the events described in The Fall of Medusa V campaign (by GW) took place.

Shortly before the Infamous Nazdreg's Hulk entered The Medusa system a small splinter fleet of ork vessels and roks broke away from it, moving toward the Bavgad system. It was led by an upstart Warboss named Gukkill Irongob, no longer content to follow in the shadow of Nazdreg, and eager to take out his anger over being defeated in the Piscina system the ships of Gukkil fell upon Bavgad Prime (an Imperial Manufacotrum world with a population of some 3.5 Billion recently garrisoned by elements of the Cadian 401st) in a nightmare show of slaughter. Within weeks hundreds of thousands of civilians has been put to the choppa and Gukkil had taken the self-appointed title of "Da Butcha 'uv Bavgad" in the process. Da Butcha had his sights on the manufactoreum complexes that dominated the capitol city of Golov, and with the Cadians of the 401st all but decimated it seemed that they would surely fall into the hands of the ork invaders. However a small group of vessels of The Ultramarines chapter had been sent to find Gukkill's fleet when it had been detected breaking away from nazdreg's Hulk, and the Astartes had rightly predicted that Bavgad was their destination.

The Ultramarines made planetfall in their customary way via drop pod and Thunderhawk to bolster the crumbling Imperial defenses held by the Cadian 401st and strike at the rampaging ork forces looking to overrun the city.

The battle for Golov has now ground to a bloody siege: surrounded by orks intent on overrunning it and looting all, and a combined force of Ultramarines and Cadians desperately attempting to hold back the the green tide.

And because the guys wanted to see some pic of our guys on Dakka Dakka:
Vid-feed image of Da Butcha:

Vid-feed image of Sicarius in combat:

Vid-feed of Sgt. "Mad Dog" Fisk:

The terrain and tables we use for this campaign will have a heavy urban/Imperial city ruins vibe (nothing better then a good Stalingrad-ish theme for a campaign me thinks).

we are looking forward to playing our first campaign game in the next few weeks and w/ a report soon to follow...

Stay tuned.

C&C and any feedback on what you'd like to see in this blog (yes batreps obviously I assume) is welcome...

Thanks.

We are going to start small with Kill Team game (a squad of terminators for Owen against a motley array of Orks) that is currently in the works.

Hopefully will have it posted by end of weekend at latest...

Looks like an excellent start. I was particularly taken with your campaign map and vid feed images.
How exactly do you plan on fitting the guard into your missions? Do they just supplement the ultramarines forces, or will they have missions dedicated to them?

No, my youngest is too young to play his own games at this point, though he is picking up things fast...

Right now he has one Cadian infantry platoon. We will supplement it into his brothers army as allies in some of the games. Since this is a friendly story based campaign among family this is a non-issue.

We might also be mixing in some Forge World goodness, etc. as well...

As he gets older if he continues to want to play we will flesh out his Cadians so he can play games of his own.

I really like how this campaign is set up, with the over-head map, on what appears to be a city, that can be used to show visual progression. Then you didn't just stop there. You made a nice addition of having roll on type of format with the only thing I see that you could add is from the mission book. The video transmissions of what appears to be the combatants leaders is nice icing on the cake.

This format could be really challenging for the players if they use premade armies before deciding the format to see how well you technically can build an army that covers all the bases it may face. The reason I say this is because tailoring an army to an opponent and / or mission is to easy but takes some great tactical forethought to make a list that can handle any enviroment.

At any rate, please keep us posted as this looks like a fantastic start.

++ VENGEANCE FROM ORBIT:

++ The ultramarines had chosen to deepstrike terminator squads into Golov behind the ork forces advancing towards the main Imperial defensive line dividing the city. The hope was to catch the greenskins in a vice: sowing confusion and stalling their advance until the Imperial defenses could be properly reinforced.

For this battle Owen gave command of his terminators to his younger brother, who was all to eager to purge some greenskins. We played the new Kill Team mission from Battle Missions but amended the points to so the terminator squad could have it’s assault cannon.

The ork forces:

· 9 ork boyz
· ork boy w/ big shoota ( stealth specialist)
· wartrakk w/ T.L. rokkit launcha
· mega-nob w/ tl shoota
· mega-nob w/ shoota-rokkit kombi (preferred enemy specialist)
· mega-nob w/ shoota-skorcha kombi (feel no pain specialist)

Squad Epsilus:

· Sgt (preferred enemy specialist)
· Terminator w/ assault cannon (feel no pain specialist)
· 3 Terminators w/ s. bolter & PF

The battlefield:

Orks win the roll to deploy and do so behind cover of central ruins:

Terminators deploy on other side of the ruins; Griffin points out the Xenos about to be purged:

Terminators fail to seize the initiative and the orks having no other battle plan and no visible targets run through the ruins to close the distance:

Led by Sgt. Epsilus the terminators spring into action and open fire on the advancing orks; cover and meg-armour prevent any substantial ork loses. Here we see Griffin directing fire:

Orks press the attack. Kombi-skorcha takes Sgt. Epsilus out of action; other ork fire ineffective:

Mega-nobz charge, but terminators smash them down:

Now the terminators push forward guns blazing and powerfists smashing foes aside, although Brother Adilus and his assault cannon fall in close combat:
The...

tide...

is turned...

Ork losses prove too much and the remaining orks scatter in the face of Imperial might:

A depleted Squad Epsilus commencing with their advance towards Imperial lines:

In the end terminator armour proved too much for shoota fire: even my rokkits bounced off like a gentle rain. After a lucky kill on the Sgt. i thought that rushing the terminators with my nobz would be a chance to break him as I should be able to take both terminators down which would force him to start taking checks to bottle out, but lots of missed attacks and some timely invulnerable saves on his part took out my nobz and leaving me with very little that could reliably threaten his Tactical Dreadnought Armour.

Once I had lost enough orks to start making bottle checks I knew I as doomed as ork LD is not going to hold put for long, and I failed the first roll...

++ The success of squad Epsilus and other terminator squads that participated in the action did indeed hinder the ork assault, as large numbers of the greenskins where drawn from the main advance eager to fight the enemy that had teleported into their midst, and many fell to the unwavering terminators of the Ultramarines in the initial hours of the strike. Though the Ultramarines lost a number of its terminator battle brothers, the sacrifice made saved countless numbers in the days and weeks of fighting to come…

Excellent stuff - nicely painted minis, great looking terrain and clear photos.

I'm liking how this campaign is developing - looking forward to more reports.

I must say, having played a few Kill Team games the Orks tend to be pretty fragile. I've managed to fail the first morale roll 3 games in a row now (last night my Nobz had reached the objective and were on the cusp of victory when I rolled an "11' for the first morale check...

Nice battle report - but Orks are unusuable in killteam. Our two best advantages (mob size and hidden p.k's) are invalidated, and the logical solution (spam kanz) is outlawed, due to lack of heavy slots. Sad, but true.

Keep in mind this campaign is part excuse to tell a story, part teaching tool, so I'm not so much list building and playing to "crush some newbs" as I am hoping to instill in them a love for fluff, the fun of using painted terrain and models, the enjoyment of scenario/campaign gaming, and thru it all a more solid grasp of the basic core rules of the game and their armies...

For example our next game is a special scenario in which "Mad Dog's Maulers" (Griffin's Cadian platoon) has been assigned guard duty over one of many sections of the city's perimeter in anticipation of the approaching tide of ork reinforcements attempting to sweep into the city.

Can Fisk and his men hold out in a fortified position, and for how long?

From the cinematics/fluff angle: it is a classic "last stand/hold the line" scenario.

From a game perspective: I will be subtly teaching them the value of cover, use of IG orders, threat priority/recognition, and introducing the use of vehicles (a tank and a couple gun emplacements)

The story is shaped to teach the game in a fun and cinematic way as we play some fun games that move the campaign along...

Plus they're kids. Using an army that has major disadvantages means that he doesn't have to pull any punches with them.

I also like how your teaching while playing out a scenario. You've got a homemade Warhammer 40k Starting set. A Macragge or Battle for Skull Pass, but in your head.

I kinda want to just be there and cheer your little guys onto victory against their oppressive greenskin father

++Guard Duty:

For days orks had been attempting to circumvent the main Imperial defense lines by circling the perimeter of the city along each flank.

Numerous Cadian platoons had been redeployed to shore up various breaches in the city's outer perimeter, and platoon 308, aka "Mad Dog's Maulers" had drawn such duty along the city's eastern wall:

"Maybe the greenskins aren't coming this way Sarge" offered trooper Klem as he nervously fingered his lasgun.
Sgt. Holn continued to scan the smoke filled no-man's land out beyond their position as he replied.
"They're coming trooper, we ain't blessed enough to get that lucky..."
Trooper Klem laughed nervously. That wasn't the answer he had hoped for...

This was a 750pt. game that we played this weekend. I played the orks as usual, and my two son's and a friend split command of the Cadian IG.

IG: Cadian platoon and a Primaris Psyker with three gun emplacements and a Punisher tank (Not an ideal force to be sure, but made up of the models Griffin has thus far and supplemented by the gun emplacements I have had kicking around for years and finally found an excuse to paint up...)

Orks: a mix of boyz mobs, killa kans, mega nobz, and Big Mek.

The table after deployment:

The Cadians had the advantage of fortifications atop a ridge, and a minefield and razor wire between them and the advancing orks:

The battle saw orks taking casualties from IG fire and the minefield as they closed the distance, but the orks proved shooty as well, like the lucky shot from a rokkit fired by a killa kan that took out a gun emplacement first turn:

Ork army loses some boyz to minefield but eventually charge platoon command squad:

Orks eventually overrun the defense perimeter:

Things start to look bad for the Cadian defenders. The Imperial commanders attempt to escape notice of the orks behind a tower:

As the Cadian numbers continue to fall, and the orks push closer the last squad falls back to the city wall w/ lasguns blazing in a desperate last stand:

Trying to make the last shooting phase count:

The orks sense victory and close the noose:

Despite killing many boyz the punisher is finally destroyed by marauding kans:

The fiery aftermath just outside the city walls, as the Big Mek ponders his ability to loot the wrecked Punisher:

Big Mek Skargob limped toward the burning tank, blood oozing from the lasgun wound in his leg. "Da Humies wus weedy, and didnt put up much uv a fight, but I think I can loot dis wagon once it stops burning, the boss want's more wagons, so we make more wagons. Fetch my grots and my tools ya gitz..."

A rather cinematic battle, though the orks had some lucky shooting and difficult terrain rolls when they needed them which made them seem unstoppable.

Despite the loss, Griffin was rather pleased with the carnage his Punisher caused, and is eager to add another tank to his collection (w/ Pask "so it kills more")

This ork win puts the campaign score tied at one game each, and the Imperials spoiling for revenge.

Good times...

Terrific campaign report! This is the type of thing my friend and I want to do eventually, once we've figured out all the rules! If only we all had teachers like this. The idea of kill team games has appealed to us since we started playing and putting it into a campaign is a great idea. We're glad to have a copy of 4th ed. rules with the kill team details.

Keep up with the updates, looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.

++ Surprise attack:

Following intense and bloody fighting In recent days, the bulk of the Ork advance had split the main Imperial defensive line, pushing through the gap and driving toward the heart of the city.

Only an Ultramarine Counter-offensive led by Cpt. Sicarius and the 2nd Company managed to halt the rampaging greenskin horde.

In the battle the Warboss known as Da' Butcha and his personal bodyguard of nobz and Battle Wagons was ambushed and decimated, but the Warboss managed to fall back towards ork lines in the confusion.

Sicarius' own forces had also suffered substantial depletion, but he saw a window of opportunity to pursue the Warboss and eliminate him:

Scouts had reported that the Warboss had not gone far, and had rallied a small number of Orks at an ammo dump a short distance away.

IG commanders thought it best to hold off until sufficient Cadian forces could be mustered to assist Sicarius, but Sicarius felt waiting would allow the Warboss to escape or rally his own forces, and that haste would prove vital to success.

Forming a small mechanized detachment from Ultramarine assets immediately available, Sicarius quickly moved to strike at the Warboss...

This was an 1175pt. campaign game that we played this weekend. We played the "Cut & Run" Ork mission from Battle Missions. We had intended to do a more detailed report with more pics, but technological difficulties meant the loss of a bunch of pics, so I'll do my best to get something interesting down at least for the sake of the narrative.

The Marines had Sicarius w/ cmd. squad, 2 tact, squads w/ rhinos, land raider w/ Chronus (Sicarius made one tact. squad "tank hunters")

The Orks had some boyz, some tank bustsas, some kans, a few looted wagons, a wartrak, and the Warboss "Da' Butcha Uv Bavgad" (counts as Ghazkull)

Ultramarines mechanized detachment led by Chronus and Sicarius approaches the Ork ammo dump:

Ultramarines steal the initiative thanks to Sicarius and launch their attack.

Pushing hard into the square the Landraider under the command of Chronus (and carrying Sicarius and command squad) destroys a looted wagon:

Combat squads deployed in buildings on the outskirts pepper the orks with lascannon and Heavy bolter fire, initially destroying a trukk, and a few orks:

Sicarius and his cmd. squad disembark with the target in sight:

Chronus directs fire from atop his Land Raider as the orks quickly begin to overrun it:

All hell breaks loose:

Sicarius and his command squad disembark and push hard at the Orks, the Warboss in sight only a short distance away.

Rhino born combat squads move in to assist, one of them disembarking to destroy a flanking wartrakk. The other is forced to disembark after there Rhino gets immobilized in the rubble and they are totally vaporized by a direct hit from a Boom Gun!!!

Though initially the marines inflicted some good casualties and had a 5 to 1 KP lead, A string of bad dice at crucial times swung the tide so that at the end of turn five the game was tied 7KP all.

Sicarius and the landraider fell to the numerous power klaws of the kans and mega nobz in a massive and bloody melee in the center that decided the battle...

Chronus was left to face an onslaught of oncoming ork boyz and kans while being peppered with volleys of rokkits from the entrenched TanKk Bustas. Most bounced off the Hull of his tank, as did three Bomb Squigs as he attempted to perform a fighting withdrawal to stay out of assault range, but a lucky rocket immobilized the Land Raider and it was eventually overrun by the kans and torn asunder.

Chronus survived the explosion, and fell back toward the combat squads providing covering fire, the lascannon keeping the few remaining Kans at bay.

The game ended after turn six with the Orks winning by two KP, and the Ultramarine commander wondering what went wrong?!?

In the end we decided he had perhaps been a little too aggressive too early and taken too big of a risk getting so close to so many power klaws. Plans are to try to soften the orks up a little more next time before closing the distance, and work on threat recognition and coordinating fire to eliminate biggest/most immediate threats ...

The surviving Orks had little time to gloat despite the human carnage and burning wrecks around them.

Within minutes after the last of the Ultramarines had fallen back into the smokey gloom of the city, the roar of Thunderhawk engines overhead heralded the arrival of enemy airborne reinforcements.

The marines had come in force to recover Sicarius dead or alive, diverted from other engagements by a priority distress signal sent by Chronus.

The amount of firepower unleashed by the Marine flying machines erupting all around him brought first a crooked smile to face of the Warboss, a smile that quickly turned to a scowl as he bellowed at the encircling war engines in defiance:

His boyz diverted his attention as they informed him that they had located a means of escape: an entrance to some sort of tunnel system below the streets close by.

With one last howl skyward the Warboss clanked heavily toward the tunnel entrance, his mega armour deflecting a number of heavy bolter shots before the darkness of the tunnels consumed him and made good his escape...

A short time later after the Ultramarines had secured the battle site, Sicarius was recovered , badly injured, and just alive.

He would recover, but his injuries would keep him from the action for some time, and his failure at eliminating the Warboss would be a wound that would linger long after his physical injuries had healed...

Very well done in spite of the pictures being lost, For some reason it seems like you both deployed close together, an artifact of the specific Battle Mission?

Love the terrain.

The mission is "Cut & Run" from Battle Missions. In it the Orks must deploy first and may do so anywhere in their half of the table, and must be a minumum of 12" from their own table edge.

The opponent then deploys in his half no closer then 12" to the center line.

We started 24" apart for the most part, though the angle of the pic does make it seem less...

That is my " huge Squig" named "Chompa". He is a mutant gnasha/attack squig that is the pet of my Warboss.

I usually field him as a "counts as nob" w/ eavy armour and a P. klaw (to represent his nasty bite and ferocious temper) in whatever squad my warboss is joined/leading.

Here is a pic of him in a WIP "squig pen":

he is a bashed together out of the rear quarters of a toy dinosaur with a face/teeth sculpted (not my forte) from greenstuff, and a few other orky bits/glyph plates added.

He was originally going to be used as a mount for a goblin general for a WHFB army I had planned, but that project never got off the ground...

he adds a little character/individuality to my army and warboss me thinks...

C&C welcome...

Though to be honest a little trick photography and selective photo editing/cropping helps keep up appearances...

Wow Great Battle reports, and I must say your terrain + conversions + painting is amazing, seeing it all on the table like that looks as good or maybe better than any whitedwarf battle report even if they have superb camera tech.

The Battle scenarios and reports where very fun to read and also very fluffy, my fav was the IG platoon with the mine field game, It felt very much like a spread to thin IG army told to hold a section of wall at all costs., the mine field and gun emplacements really added the extra effect to make it feel like a real wall defense battle.

Lastly I am very glad to read and see the friendly 40k campaign being written out and planed so fluffily with less regard to rules and more regard to fun and story. My 40k group has slowly moved from having campaigns with story to just tournament lists and battles just to rack up wins, and while competitive games are fun I miss good old campaigns like this.
I remember years ago when my steel legion threw themselves repeatedly against a city controlled by necrons and kept getting pushed out, but I was able to tie up the necrons long enough for some SM armys to come and save me and the city, tho the campaign ended up with Chaos winning lol.

Yeah, The campaign/scenario style play is what always drew me to wargaming, and is what I most enjoy.

They seem to be enjoying the story element as well, which makes it worth it.

I figure if my boys keep playing as they get older they can always play tournaments, etc. if they want to, but it isn't the direction I feel they need to be pushed at this age when they are so new to the game.

My most memorable games are ones from campaigns.

*nods* So true, I always remember epic Campaign battles, and esily forget a tournament one, tho there have been 2 tournament battles I always remember and am proud of.

and as you said, they should have allot more fun with a good "draw you in" story that they can help change and write than ust winning and silly braging. I like being able to look back and tell little side storys for each little epic thing in the game like a single long missle launcher killing a hammer head

Just wanted to post an update for those following along as real life and summer has slowed things down with the campaign, but we are still planning to carrying on with it.

Preparations for or next installment are in the works (really trying to only use painted models), with a goal of posting it up by summer's end (Need time to get a few more things painted, play the game and do post production/report).

The next campaign battle will be a Spearhead engagement on the outskirts of Golov, with Cadian defenders (with a VERY LARGE ace up their sleeve) trying to hold off a marauding Dred mob led by Big Mek Gugnutz.

Here are a few teaser pics for now:

Cadians once again holding the perimeter, but this time the tanks have arrived:

The Dred Mob approaches:

Stay tuned...

++ Da' Wrath Uv' Gugnutz:

++ Big Mek Gugnutz reveled in the smell of burning fuel and the ground shaking clank of da dreds and kans that filled his ears as his Deff Mob stomped toward the outskirts of da 'umie city. The Stompa at the point of the mob of ork walkers towered above him, it's arsenal of guns already beginning a steady cacophony of thunderous blasts as overeager gun crews began to try to range in their first targets.

++ As the Dred Mob closed the distance it didn't take long for the Stompa to draw the fire of many of the enemy, and lascannon and missile impacts blossomed all over the Stompa. Such was this initial volley of enemy fire that the Stompa's power field actually failed under the barrage, much to Gugnutz's annoyance. "Get dat' field backup ya gitz" he yelled, kicking a passing grot who strayed too close to it's master. The mobs of ork boyz drawn to follow the Dred mob began to yell and fire erratically as they started to make out the silhouettes of the enemy in the smokey gloom ahead.

++Gugnutz knew It was time to test his handywork out on the 'umies and show da Warboss that he was the best Mek of da lot. He bellowed the attack order as enemy fire began to whistle into the Ork formation, much of it impacting upon the forcefield generated from the massive device upon his back. "Waaaagh!!!"

++Commander Griffin observed the Approaching orks through his magnoculars from the cupola of the Baneblade carefully concealed just within the city perimeter. The Orks had taken the bait and moved to attack what appeared to be a lightly defended entry gate. Even now a mechanized spearhead of Ultramarines was encircling the approaching greenskins. When the noose was closed the target of their deception: the ork known as Gugnutz would be eliminated and the Ork's ability to manufacture their warmachines vastly reduced. Praise the Emperor.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For this campaign battle we decided to try our hand at the Spearhead rules.

We decided to do a 3000pt. battle so we could squeeze in just about every vehicle and walker we owned as the boys wanted to play a big battle.

The Spearhead mission is "Breakthrough" using "Counter-attack" deployment. Orks are the attackers.

The sanity (or lack thereof) of choosing this size game will likely reveal itself as we play the game out...

Big Mek Gugnutz's Dred Mob approach the outskirts of Golov with a gaggle of ork boyz mobs following in it's wake:

The Imperial Defenders (A mix of Cadians and Ultramarines) watch the orks approach from the city outskirts:

Pask, commanding a vanquisher leads a Tank Hunter Spearhead:

Ultramarines and Cadians take aim:

Imperial Reserves ( A Baneblade Spearhead and an Ultramarines Mechanized Assault Spearhead led by Sgt. Chronus):

The Stompa leads the attack rather than be kept in reserve and takes the obligatory pre-game penetrating hit(knocking down it's power field):

So we now have the game set-up & deployment completed.

We will be playing the game in installments (probably two turns at a time), and presenting them throughout the week until completion.

Stay tuned later tonight for the first installment

Will Gargutz be eliminated?

Will the Imperial reinforcements arrive in time to stop the rampaging Stompa?

Will My sons Cry foul when i unleash the power of this fully armed and operational Kustom Stompa?!?

(To be continued)

++The Wrath Uv' Gugnutz (TURNS 1 & 2):

Praised by the Emperor The Imperial Forces Steal the initiative from the Ork Attackers (Always a good start).

Commander Griffin moves Pask's Tank Hunter Spearhead to a more dispersed formation:

IMPERIAL TURN 1:

The Imperial forces seem to have made taking down the Stompa a priority as they unleash Hell upon it.

The Kustom Force Field of Big Mek Gugnutz stops a slew of pen/glancing hits on the Stompa including: two krak missiles (two glances), two lascannon (pens), and a shot from Pask's Vanquisher that rolled Pen 16 (thanks to pask in a Tank hunter Spearhead getting +2 to pen. rolls and two dice from vanquisher cannon).

Owen(in red) tries to locate the pesky KFF:

However despite it's seeming effectiveness the KFF can't stop everything, and a lascannon pen. from an Ultramarines tactical squad causes a shaken gun crew on the Deff Arsenal, and a hunter killer from a Razorback stuns the Stompa's driver meaning it won't move this turn.

The Imperials would have liked to do more permanent damage, but they take pleasure in knowing the Stompa isn't moving for a turn and the Arsenal is not firing...

ORK Turn 1:
Everything in the ork force runs except for the Stompa (which can't move at all).

Stompa's fire is mostly ineffective. Gaze of Mork does destroy a Leman Russ from pask's Tank Hunter Spearhead (thanks to it becoming a Destroyer hit when Strength rolled for). One shoulder kannon hits but fails to pen.The predator. Other weapons miss or deviate causing no further harm

Not an Impressive display of Orkish destruction.

Gugnutz is NOT amused...

Bird's-eye view of the table end of Turn 1:

---------------------------------------------------

IMPERIALS TURN 2:

A cheer goes up among the Imperial Commanders as the Baneblade arrives from reserve:

Imperials continue to concentrate most of theirl firepower on the Stompa:

The KFF stops a couple of Krak missiles (glances) on the Stompa.

Pask misses the Stompa w/ Vanquisher cannon but pens. w/ lascannon causing drive damage that halves speed of Stompa.
Other Russ deviates battlecannon shot killing two orks near Stompa.

Main gun from Baneblade pens. Stompa and stuns a weapon crew again (Deff Arsenal). Blast is so big it also kills nine orks too close to stompa:

Predator fires all weapons at kans forming acting as bodyguards to the Mega-Dread in a Spearhead formation. One Kan is destroyed and the other is shaken.

ORKS TURN 2:

Repair Krew fails to fix the Stompa's damaged drive and it staggers forward a mere 6"

Most other orks forces run to close the distance except for a squad of kans that fires rokkits at the Demolisher from behind a hill destroying it's Demolisher cannon.

This turns Stompa fire might go down as the worst in 40K history. Most weapons missed, and those that hit failed to glance/pen. including a Belly Gun that scattered the worst possible way and then only created a 7" blast that hurt nothing, and a supa-gatler that rolled double fives (out of ammo on first roll) that only killed one devastator marine due to cover...

The sound of Gugnutz cursing could be heard for miles...

The look of things end of Turn 2:

While the Orks have closed some distance they have failed thus far to inflict any sizable casualties on the Imperial defenders, and there is still a whole Spearhead of Ultramarines led by Chronus flanking from reserve to deal with...

To be continued...

Thanks.

I was really trying to commit myself to fully painted for our batreps, but the boys have been tag-teaming me to play over the past few weeks (especially as we started setting up the board and deploying models) and with the week off it seemed silly not to take advantage of the free time. Playing game= happy kiddos.

Oh. well, as long as we are making progress on the painting front every game I'll feel ok about it.

Now if I can only kill some Imperial stuff before the Stompa goes super nova and nukes most of my own army...

IMPERIAL TURN THREE:

++From the cupola of his command Baneblade Karad Vorsk transmitted his orders across all vox channels: "In the name of the Emperor all guns fire, give them hell!!!"
The Imperial defenders needed little encouragement to do just that. The orks had been closing the distance to their lines rapidly, and every soldier present knew that if the orks got to them that the situation would quickly become a bloodbath. So fire they did, with everything at their disposal...

This turn was very effective for the Imperial defenders as they savaged the Orks in their shooting phase. The Ork strategy for this Mission was to swamp the enemy half, and force the Imperium to play defensively. IF all went well the amount of Ork scoring units in the zone would bring a win, but the Imperium had other plans and proceeded to dismantle my stompy assault with some devastating shooting...

For starters the arrival of the Ultramarines Mechanized assault Spearhead on the defender's left flank brought some death by flamer and rapid firing bolters to the ork boyz:

(Yes we played this wrong, this spearhead is supposed to come in turn one, but we didn't catch that and treated it like a regular reserve...oops)

This was followed by the the main gun of the Baneblade targeting the Kans threatening the Ultramarines and killing the rest of the ork mob in it's gigantic blast as well:

This could have been bad if the huge blast had deviated onto the marines, but war is risky I guess...

On the left flank a Leman Russ drops a battle cannon shell in the middle of another huge mob of boyz (killing 18 boyz):

The razorback destroys the closing Deff Dred with it's lascannon.

The KFF carried by the Big Mek does continue to stop a number of missiles and lascannon shots from doing anything to the stompy horde however.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ORK TURN THREE:

The remaining Orks on the defender's right flank had been deployed to ward against any flanking ebemy reserves and now with all the enemy reserves revealed they had the hard task of rushing the Leman Russ tanks, the nob hoping to cross the distance and tear them apart with his Power klaw if he can survive the coming fire...

Stompy elements continue push up middle, Mega-dred and Stompa unloading on the defenders as they do so. The Stompa destroys the razor back with a supa-rokkit and a few marines die to the Gaze of Mork and the Kill Kannon of the Mega-dred, but cover and typical orky accuracy prevent any telling Imperial losses.

The Shoota boyz and the trailin kans turn hard right to deal with the flanking Ultramarines:

One of the combat squads loses four memebrs to massed shoota fire.

Tank Hunter Killa Kan Spearhead unloads on the land raider immobilizing it and blowing off a lascannon sponson:

Bird's eye view of the battle at the end of turn three:

++ The Big Mek howled with orkish glee as his boyz gunned down one of the 'umie squads that had disembarked on their flank. The battle was just starting to get good, and he knew that if his stompy invenshuns could reach the Imperial lines they could break the defenders and turn the tide. "Keep fighting boyz, dis' is gonna be our city soon, after we smash these gitz!!!" yelled the Big Mek over the din of the shoota fire erupting around him...

I'm starting to get a bad feeling about this. (

The Orks caused little casualties this turn, and I am about to feel the sting of another turn of Imperial firepower...

Griffin however is getting a huge kick out of the destructiveness of his IG tanks. Good times...

Great blog! I hope to play with my kids when they get a little older (they already play with the models themselves).
How (and what out of) did you makethose roads? I like the paintjob on them as well. I have to agree that all your terrain looks great. Keep up the great job (on both fronts).

Yeah I think it is cool as well. Good times.

Update on the campaign:

Astute readers may have noticed that the most recent battle report is incomplete. Just wanted to update that due to some unforseen issues with basement water damage we had to scrap the game mid-game as I had to move the tables and items in our game room around to facilitate cleanup...

that is the potential danger of spreading a game out so long I guess, but we still had fun with what we played, and if you look at the state of the board in the last pics posted I think the tide was turning against my Orks, so we are going to chalk this up as a win for the Imperium and assume from a campaign fluff standpoint that the remaining orks retreated...

Once we get our game room put back together the campaign will resume.

We have tried to play a variety of game formats thus far: the first game was kill team, then a couple of standard 40K games, and most recently Spearhead. This Leaves us with a few other formats to explore: Apocalypse, Planet Strike, and Cities of Death.

We are going to save Apocalypse for later down the road, which leaves us with PlanetStrike and COD for our next game.

After discussing it with my sons we thought we would leave it to the Dakka readership of this blog to pick which of the two formats we will play next.

Hopefully if anyone is reading this we will get a few responses and whichever format gets the most by Saturday at Midnight will be what we will play...

CoD!

I have to say City of Death is my favorite supplement book of all time (except for when cityfight was release for the 13th black crusade campaign).

Also with City of Death you can have it so that the Imperium are making a push into Ork held territory or a surprise ork warband attacking an imperial habs.

No rush we understand, I have a family of my own and I've been trying to finish my 1.5k IG army when I decided to start a guard army again at the beginning of this year. Since then I've completed a company command squad and a manticore lol though I should have my demolisher finished by this Sunday.

My friends have been letting me proxy my High elf army for units in my IG list. Nothing better then HE spearmen and archers as PIS

ChocolateGork wrote:How are you working the campaign map? i haven't seen anything about it?

That "map" is really just a visual tally counter to keep track of games won: each Imperial symbol equals a win for them, and an ork symbol a win for me.
We aren't actually moving counters on any physical map, etc. The campaign is story/scenario based.

And yes they have free access to advice during the game. They might ask me "should I move this unit up into cover here or stay still and fire at x", etc. and I'll give them some feedback on what might happen with each choice, or what one I think is safer or more threatening from my side of the table, etc. Funny thing is they often don't go with what I suggest, wanting to try something of their devising...

Last year got crazy with work and real life responsibilities and my digital camera went bye bye, but the campaign is soon to continue. We are in the process of getting some more models and new terrain painted up for a COD game very soon (featuring my Orks vs. my son's Cadian IG) and will be posting it asap...

small update of sorts (still no batrep, sorry ):

The boys and I decided to customize our tape measures, a turn counter and to do some basic objective markers for future use:

Some quick spray painting (lesson learned: never give a five year old a spray can) and decals added to tapes and markers as well as a press molded Aquilla added to a commercial turn counter gives some decen results, and leaves us with some functional pieces that have a little more 40K vibe and help cut down on whose tape measure is whose, etc. This was fun game related project with the guys that gave them a little practice applying decals to boot...

Work commences on a bunch of IG and SM infantry and vehicles in preperation for the COD batrep:

1. Griffin's IG infantry have had a makeover with Pig Iron heads and are looking more killy and hardcore without the Cadian "Space Ball Helmets
2. A bunch of chimeras, Russes and other armor is in various stages of completion
3. Finishing up some Ultramarine vehicles
4. Finishing an Ultramarine Librarian based off of the Space Hulk plastic Librarian (storm shield added)

5. Finishing some terrain pieces and a new urban 4'X4' board to be used in next game:

Also: I received a new digi-cam for Valentine's day which solves that issue as well (and hence the pic above).

Stay tuned, we are getting close.

Glad to see someone else playing 40k with their kids. I have an 8 and 6 year old that have been playing for about a year or so. When we were picking out their armies the youngest asked about what each one was like. When I got to the Tyranids and said their goal was to eat everyone he said "Chomp! Chomp! Awesome!" and had to have them. He's pretty blood thirsty in his play style (ignoring objectives in order to completely kill a unit), so it seems a good match for him.

Our main thing is to pay respect to a few ground rules. The first one being: Have Fun. The second rule in our house is if there is a disagreement that can't be resolved quickly by talking it out then you pick up a D6, roll for it, and move on. The third rule is more of a solid life lesson: while winnng is fun you can learn a lot when you lose. We try and do a post mortem on our battles to see what went right and what went wrong. I'm also like you in that any and all advice is freely given.

So far things have worked out wonderfully. Lately we've been working on unit match up skills such as learning that a Hive Tyrant can't take on Abaddon by itself...

I've let each of them paint their own armies. Which, I have to admit, was a bit hard watching the 6 year old all but doodle on a $50 trygon... Of course it was even harder when my wife say the receipt and said, "you paid what for a piece of plastic?!?"

As far as the wallet is concerned, yeah, I've put a lot into this. We have 4 complete armies (2k points or more) and 2 more in the works plus some terrain and buildings. But the money is nothing compared to the amount of time we spend together doing something.

Really loved reading through your battle reports. It made me nostalgic for the time when my children were about the same age as yours and the three of us would play LotR games, and then later 40K. in my case, my youngest son just didn't like losing any models (and he played horde Tyranids!) so he ended up dropping out of the hobby. My oldest son has been playing now for about 8 years and I've really treasured the connection it has created between us. So keep up the father-son games ... it is expensive but worth it!

Your sons are lucky boys. A father who puts this much care and time into sharing his hobby in with his children is something really wonderful to see (My dad was a hippy and disapproved of my wargamming hobby, so I gotta be jealous of them haha). And that you've bought all those models for them is amazing! Did Owen and Griffin try painting anything or have you been covering that for them thus far?

Also, how did you get the smoke effect on the burning vehicle?
Spoiler:

Looks like fine steel wool with some grey and orange accents.

And a good choice in a name for your oldest son. Always good to see a fellow Owen in the 40k scene I know you're taking a much needed break but a lot of us look forward to the updates this summer!

Thanks for the feedback all, it is motivating me to get back to doing some batreps, hopefully soon.

We have some ideas for some games to play and report during summer break.

Yes the marker is wool that is spray painted and has paint added to hold it's shape.

The boys have not shown a ton of interest painting themselves as of yet, so we buy a lot of eBay models and touch them up, or I use it as an excuse to take a break from my orks and work on something different.

I had posted this in another thread, but I thought i would add it here for continuity:

++ The small line of Imperial armoured vehicles snaked it's way along the roadway under cover of darkness. Ahead was fuel depot M-42, which hopefully held the fuel they desperately needed to ensure they might return to the safety of the Imperial lines further to the north. They had been sent out to scout the location and strength of the approaching Ork horde. That mission has been a success, but the Imperials could not shake the feeling that the Orks would not let them get away without a fight...

Vid-feed below shows the Imperial column "en route" (starting deployment), with vets in chimera on point followed by Cmd chimera, then a second unit of vets and the vanquisher bringing up the rear:

This is a 750pt. campaign game between Orks and IG.

A custom scenario was used:

1. Both armies must be fully mechanized to represent the nature of the encounter.

2. Ig deploy first (no reserves) with one unit touching the center point of the table and the rest deployed as desired behind it to form a column of vehicles facing Northward on the roadway (all units must be embarked in transports at the start). No reserves for the IG.

3. Orks do not start with anything on the table but get turn one to launch their ambush. Roll a D6 for each unit:
1: reserve
2: move on from western edge
3-4: move on from northern edge
5: move on from eastern edge
6: Ork player can choose edge or place in reserve
Ork edges for turn one are all of the northern edge and 36" out from northern edge along both the eastern/western edges.

Ork reserves roll for edge as above yet may enter at any point along the full eastern/northern/western edges.IF a "6" is rolled the ork player may choose any point along ALL FOUR edges to move on from. IF a "1" is rolled the IG playe chooses edge.

The game uses: random game length, kill points, and night fighting.

IG army:
* Company Cmd squad (medic, vox, krak,h.flamer; cmdr w/p. weapon and plasma pistol)
chimera w/ hull h. flamer and turret autocannon
* Vet squad (melta x2, h. flamer, vox)
chimera w/ hull h. flamer and turret multi-laser
* Vet squad (melta x2, h. flamer, vox)
chimera w/ hull h. flamer and turret multi-laser
*vanquisher w/ hull lascannon and "tank ace"(Pask)

Ork Army:
* Big Mek (burna, bosspole, cybork body) (leads ork boyz unit)
* ork boyz (11 boyz+nob) (shootas, b. shoota, nob w/ p. klaw and bosspole)(trukk w/ b. shoota)
* ork boyz (10 boyz) (shootas, b. shoota) (trukk w/ b. shoota)
* war buggies (x3) w/ t.l. rokkits
* war buggies (x3) w/ t.l. rokkits
* war buggies (x3) w/ t.l. rokkits
* looted wagon w/ boomgun

Automatically Appended Next Post:
TURN1[Ork movement phase]:

++ The ork vehicles had been shadowing the 'umies as they moved along the roadway. Da Big Mek had sent some of the boyz racing off to flank the enemy with order to attack when they heard the sound of shootas. As the 'umie vehicles began to slow the Big Mek yelled the order to attack and the sound of racing engines and the firing of shootas and rokkits filled the night...

The looted wagon and one unit of war buggies had failed to arrive in time for the ambush (boh rolled "1" and had to be place in reserve).

A trukk full of boyz and a unit of war buggies arrived from the western edge with guns blazing while a unit of buggies moved full speed from the northern edge hoping to get into range for next turn:

dakka dakka dakka!!!

The trukk containing the boyz led by the Big Mek arrived from the eastern edge with guns blazing:
"Attack!!!"

ORK SHOOTING [TURN1]:

The lead chimera is hit from both sides by combined shoota and big shoota fire from the two trukk riding boyz squads who manage to spot it in the darkness and is immobilized and shaken.

The command chimera is hit by a single rokkit from the buggies to it's left and is stunned.

The orks have no assaults or other buisness to attend to, so their turn1 ends...

IG [TURN1]:

The Imperial commander commanded both vet units to deploy and engage the Orks (in hindsight risky as the orks in the trukk escaped all harm):

He issued both units orders to "bring them down", allowing rerolling of all the melta shots. A combination of meltas and heavy flamers destroyed the approaching trukk and one of the buggies, but the orks in the trukk managed to bail out unharmed and now threatened to assault the vets next turn:

The vanquisher used it's searchlight to spot the Big Mek's trukk (scanning 33" into the darkness) on the eastern flank and fired a vanquisher shell that destroyed the engine immobilizing it...
END OF TURN1:
Orks: 0KP IG: 0KP

b]TURN 2:[/b]

ORKS:

Neither of the Ork unts in reserve (warguggy unit and looted wagon) arrive this turn.

Ork buggies speed down the flank while the orks on foot press the attack:

The two remaining buggies on the western flank speed along it and take shots at the side of the vanquisher but only one rokkit hits and bounces harmlessly.

The other buggy unit attempt to target the command chimera but miss with all three shots.

The orks threatening the vets close in behind a hail of shoota fire which kills half the vets, but their morale holds. Later the orks assault and smash the remaining vets and continue their push forward.

The orks led by the Big Mek assault the immobilized chimera at the front of th column and destroy it's remaining weapon leaving it unale to move or fire for the rest of the game.

IG:

The vanquisher illuminates the flanking buggies and blows one to bits with a shot from it's vanquisher battle cannon, while the nearby vets are again ordered by the commander to bring down the remaining buggy. Their heavy flamer and meltas finish off the last flanking buggy:

The command squad which had disembarked lends it's firepower to a chimera's that advances to hit the rampaging orks with it's heavy flamer and multi-laser. Together they kill over half the Ork mob, but it's morale holds.

The command chimera pushes forward and flames the Big Mek and his boys reducing them to four models, but again their morale holds.

End of Turn 2:
Orks: 2 KP
IG: 2 KP

TURN 3:
ORKS( Top of turn):
This turn saw all of the ork reinforcements arrive (a unit of three rokkit buggies and a looted wagon w/ boomgun) and some brutal shooting from the orks.
The remainder of the boyz mob move toward the IG command squad and rake it with shoota fire dropping three targets despite the best efforts of the medical servitor. They then assault and lose a few boyz but with some savage fighting by the nob the IG command is wiped out.
The unit of rokkit buggies arriving from reserve from the western edge manage to destroy the vet chimera with two penetrating rokkit hits.
The looted wagon also arrives on the western flank from reserve and blasts the vet squad killing four of them and their morale breaks. They fall back toward the south edge.
The other war buggies press toward the middle unloading a salvo of rokkits on the command chimera immobilizing it and destroying the multi-laser.
IG (bottom of turn):
The vets do not rally and continue to fall back towards the south edge. They are not in range of the looted wagon.
The vanquisher fires at the looted wagon but only immobilizes it.

TURN 4:
ORKS (Top of turn):
The ork boyz ineffectively fire at the last immobilized chimera and eventually assault it so that the nob can tear it apart with his power klaw.
The looted wagon sadistically fires it’s boomgun at the fleeing vets and scores a hit evaporating all but a lone guardsmen.
The two rokkit buggy squads move 12” toward the vanquisher but only manage to hit with two of five rokkits and both bounce.
IG: (Bottom of turn):
The Vanquisher finds itself alone and facing multiple threats. It backs up 6” hoping to keep it’s rear armour unexposed and fires a vanquisher shell at the looted wagon getting a direct hit and a destroyed result!!!
TURN 5:
ORKS:
The orks run toward the vanquisher but are still a ways away.
Both rokkit buggy units move closer and fire rokkit salvos at the vanquisher. Front armour stops one salvo, and the rokkits I the left side arc miss.
IG:
The vanquisher destroys a rokkit buggy with a vanquisher shell.
We roll to end the game and the game continues…
TURN 6:
ORKS:
Is a repeat of turn five with the orks immobilizing the vanquisher and a few few rokkits bouncing.
The boys run again and will be an assault threat next turn.
IG:
The vanquisher continues to make it’s last stand destroying another buggy with a pen. 6 and a resulting fireball!!!
We roll to end the game and again the game continues…
TURN 7:
ORKS:
The bigmek leading his three remaining boys runs but will not see any action as I forgot to move them for three turns as I forgot them hidden behind the chimera wreck/smoke plume ...

The boyz move into assault range. The buggies fire rokkit salvos tearing off the vanquisher cannon and shaking it.

The boyz assault and the nob roars triumphantly as he tears the tank asunder with his klaw. However in his fury of blows he pierces the fuel tank and the resulting explosion kills all of his remaining boyz!!! Oops…

Loving everything about this thread. I'm trying to bring my brother-in-law into the game and hoping that his two boys (4 and 2) will follow when they're old enough. I'm also glad to see the persistence that you and your boys have to keep playing when life intervenes!
