Pen and paper everytime. Sometimes I might then transfer it onto a fancy sheet, (mainly for games like Mordheim) but during construction always on a pad.

Otherwise, pen and paper wok fine.

As a long time army builder user, I can say that all of the criticism here is completely accurate.

They sell you this wonky outdated license that expires if you want support, and while your product will function beyond that, quit supporting their old product as soon as they move to a new version. Add to that the fact that they don't even maintain the data files; the USERS have to take it upon themselves to create the data files. They're really just selling you a glorified spread-sheet. For the money it costs, you should get SOME level of actual company support for the datafiles.

To make matters even worse with Lone Wolf's product, GW struck a deal with them to not even allow data files from new codex's for at least 3 months, if I recall correctly. For example, when the new Codex Space Marines came out, it took me 4 months of pen and papering it before I could even download the datafile, and that file was so full of errors (it is a user generated product after all) that I almost gave up on it. Unfortunately, no one has written anything better yet, so this is what we're stuck with.

Someone, please save us from this horrible product; I promise you'll get my money!!!

There's no need to be insulting.

It has little to do with simple math, and lots to do with the ability to make fairly involved changes rapidly, without having to keep flipping back and forth in the books, while also having some level of validation performed for you so you don't miss anything.

Every point in that except the fact that you use word I would disagree with....

The army list builder I use is fast, easy, and free. Thus, it doesn't take money from me.

I also know far more than simple math, and I use a list builder because it is fast, and easy to make changes to your list quickly, and you don't have to constantly look up point values!

You know what the funniest part of graysparks post was?

Pen and paper mostly. Old school. Simple arithmetic is not something I need a calculator for.

When I have time, and I'm at home, I'll pull up AB and do it (when I'm at my club, I don't have a computer with me - but the codex and notepaper do fine).

If I'm doing the validation of tourney lists, I'll use AB in conjunction with the relevant codex to check on legality of units and whether or not points are accurate.

I also make up the lists according to what models I have and what they are armed with.

[I do have over 100 marines, with multiples of special weapons, and at least 3 of each heavy weapon, and 'sgt' models with various gear, so my squads ARE all WYSIWYG.
If I don't have the model (or suitable replacement) then I don't use it. I don't proxy weapons as other weapons. Vehicles may be scratchbuilds, but the relevant options are included and they ARE representative]

On a related note....

Wondering if anyone does what I do... Designate models for each unit, to a set point cost, then choose which units to use based on how many points for the game?

How do you build an army list? @ 2010/06/28 07:38:18

@ helgrenze :

My approach is quite the same : I model the minis according to the codex options, [b]then[/] calculate the cost point of their unit, then, as you do,
helgrenze wrote: choose which units to use based on how many points for the game
...

Not very cost- or game- efficient, since most of the time I end up modelling options that are very costly and not so powerful in game terms... But I like highly customized units anyway, so...

I revamped it to my own style, making room to have all my stats and rules listed. It really limits how much time I spend looking up my own rules and speeds games along nicely.

I have army builder, but i find i use the pen and paper route way more. I usually get the math spot on with MEQ, but for other armies that arent made up of 5s and 10s army builder takes the headache of fiddling out of it for me

Pen and paper. Tried out The Forge after reading through the posts.
Took a few for me to figure it out. I started a test list and went to print preview....very disappointed with how it had my upgrades scattered everywhere and the fact that when it showed each character, it listed every possible upgrade.
I added a pred and it had my lord upgrades on it><
Any way to get The Forge NOT to do this?
pm me with info please.

Army Builder is awesome, but building a list on paper helps me to remember unit stats costs etc. I try to run my paper lists through Army Builder just make sure I did not screw up and buy something I'm not allowed.

Other; I use pen and paper then transfer it to a word document/notepad file for safe-keeping and forum posting. I also run it through the windows calculator to make sure.

If I write it on the computer, I transfer it to paper due to my lack of a printer.

Spreadsheet, as it allows me to sum up quickly and change things easily without having to recalculate. I can also set up 'points remaining' to know how much more I need to spend or if I can slot something in I know costs x amount.

It's more flexible than an army builder, and if there are any problems I can change it myself.

For those who don't use ArmyBuilder... why?
Is it
A) Personal Preference
B) Cost
C) Too hard
D) Incorrect Data Files
E) Pen+Paper is easier/portable
F) Other/Combination?

I like using Armybuilder, especially when I'm at higher points values, and especially for Fantasy. The ability to change unit count easily multiple times is invaluable when trying to squeeze maximum value out of those last few points. When I try to to the same thing by hand the paper ends up so scribbled over it is illegible, and I still couldn't tell you if I ended up with 8 or 9 models in the squad.

Generally, I work out my list with Armybuilder, and then for a Tournament i'll print it out nicely with Word - I find armybuilder has too much on the sheet, when all your opponent really wants to know is the number of models and what equipment.

Yeah, I have to say Battlescribe, and only after having two computers crash and had to go through the licensing thing with AB all over again. Basically bought it again...

So now I help maintain and work on the Battlescribe data files, so I am a little biased. But when I can throw together the basic framework for a list in a few hours, then use it and keep improving it as I go, makes me quite happy. That and it's free.

Soon I'd like to figure out how to the do the "drop downs" and the "if thens" in the program and it would be pretty much like any other army builder software.

mostly i just sift through the codex looking for points and imagining different builds. Games for me are usually 2500-5000 points, so I leave up to 300 to 1000 points free for upgrades. It isn't that hard that it warrants an army builder program to be honest. Heck, at the most, pen and paper is all you really need.

Then usually I pump it into Army Builder to get a nice cheat sheet with all my stats and points and that and they make good handouts for my opponent.

Codex in hand and notepad open, start setting up pre-set builds that I like (eg. a vet squad with carapace and 3 plasma guns right as the top so I can cut/paste without calculating the point cost several times or memorizing anything). Frequently I will break up my army into "sections" that don't necessarily fight together, but simply happen to be the same number of units. Eg. If I have 6 vet squads and 3 tanks I will make 3 sections of 2 vet squads in a tank so I can just cut/paste the cost to more quickly calculate it. It takes me like 5 minutes to get a basic list started so I can fine tune it. I find it faster than hopping around an excel document adding and deleting entries until I get everything right.

Microsoft Excel, a spreadsheet program.

I have a kind of template set up, a little typing and copy/pasting and you can change your list dead easy. It sometimes takes a bit of back-and-forth through the books, but that's not an issue for me.

The best part about this is that points can all be done automatically, and you're less likely to miss points than you would be if doing all the calculations manually...

I've never really bothered with list builder programs...

Highly recommend army Builder. It saves you a lot of time, and you can compare various armies/units per point really fast. It is also good for multiple game systems.

I would use Army builder but I don't feel right paying for my laziness lol so I have been using "+1 Table Top Helper" isn't the greatest but its free and need to do a bit more work pounding out an army list. But for a first draft army list before I start an army is always pencil and paper

I personally love armybuilder, and understand why updates have to come slow (they slow things down so they get less interference from GW, plus the support is fan made so your not buying those updates...hence why i havent reupped my liscense in 4 years.)

AB allows me to stare at a list as I build to fine tune it how I like or add other units and see how well they work together in my head easier then Pnp or using a spreadsheet.

Been using computers since I was a kid, and school instilled a serious dislike for writing. So Lone Wolf.

Just on Notes on my iPad. Before I started getting ebooks I used pen and paper but now it's easier just to have everything in the one spot.
(Plus copy/paste to dakkadakka )

Pen and paper. When making a new army list, I'll likely look at previous ones to see how much different units are worth and toss them in if they fit the points amount.

I use an app called battle scribe, mostly because it includes the point costs, war gear options, and profiles, for every army

You dug deep to resurrect this one....

Army Builder if at home, and Battlescribe (we'll see how the new version handles) when at the table.
