In an effort to reorganize this thread I am moving the photos of all my armies to the first post so viewers get a better idea of what to expect.
Orks: I didn't start with this army, but this was the first army I ran regularly.
Grey Knights begun in 2007 but added some more over the years. First army.
Imperial Guard begun 2007 but added lots over the years, most recently Valkyries.
Tau that I painted & sold on eBay.
Dark Angels that I painted simply to be able to play Sammael, sold in August of 2011
Space Wolves:
Fists of Dorn. Painted these for Scarab in February of 2010 , but never took photos of final product.
Salamanders, finished right after I did Scarab's Imperial Fists.
Black Templars from 20??
Chaos project from winter 2011... or earlier?
Bought a Space Marine Battle Company in the summer of 2011 and worked on these in the Fall & Winter of 2011-12; still not done though:
Imperial Fists that I painted Fall 2011 & Winter 2012. Wanted to try painting yellow after doing Scarab's army that I was not thrilled with.(Not completed)
Painted these Blood Angels for a friend (LordArtex here) and then was inspired to paint the Flesh Tearers in the next photo for myself:
(Not completed in photos)
Ork Deff Skullz army for a client in the Winter of 2012: (Not completed)
Ravenguard army that sat unfinished for 18+months until the Stormtalon came out & got me motivated again:
White Scars army from summer 2012:
Horus Heresy Era Death Guard. Painted Winter/ Spring 2013:
Two Tau armies done for commission Spring & Summer 2013:
Necron Army Winter of 2012-2013
Daemons Ally Contingent December 2013
Eldar Ally contigent October November 2013
Dark Eldar 2012

Original first post:
I recently learned that “reorganizing” Photobucket photos into folders is really idiot talk for “lose-all-photo-addresses-on-all-forums & blogs that you’ve ever posted anywhere.” Woops. Anyhow, I figured instead of going through the last 3 years of postings here, there, and somewhere, I’d restart & do it right this time: on Dakka!!
So this thread will be a random listing of stuff I’m working on presently and have worked on in the last three years.
Presently, my local gaming group is running a campaign based on the Planetary Empires map. Here’s the map I painted up:
To make this board, we built the map out of the tiles then I took it home. I traced the entire map onto a piece of foamboard, then cut out the shape. Second, I took the frame and glued it onto a second full size foamboard. I glued on some styrofoam "mountains", bits to represent buildings, and primed & painted & flocked. Here's some close ups:
Oh yeah, I also drilled out all the holes and inserted RareEarth magnets. Then I magnetized the little buildings. We're still in the process of making our own flags out of nails. I've used the Planetary Empires hexes before & it always drove me nuts when the pegs broke off in the little holes so nails w/ magnets elliminate that problem.
Some of the players can't make it every week so I made up a BFG fleet to represent those guys. Here's some of it:
Whenever that player shows up, he "teleports" down to the main map.
But then three weeks ago, we attacked his ship and had to pretend a city fight table was the space ship. That didn't sit well with me so my next project was the interior of an Imperial Cruiser or maybe just the interior of a planetside command post or underground bunker. Either way here it is:

Looking great! Only criticism I can come up with is that you could work a bit with your white. It needs some depth, just now it's looking very plain.

yeh, some deeper shading colours would pay dividends because the freehand on the back of Vulkans cloak looks brilliant!

I agree with both of you about the white. I just can't get it right. What works?
I have since added lizard scales to his shoulders so that it matches the GW version more, but the white still looks off. I scrapped the white of the banner and just painted it black which looks good. Here's photos of him today:

You can paint your white with a brown to bonish base or you could start of with greys. Then just leave some of the base coulors in the *deep parts* (can't find a word for it now, sorry) but you ad the paint so that it gets a layered effect and ads a bit of shadowing or whatever you would call it. I hope this help with something.

^ Above would work, also maybe a thin black wash? Or shade down by blending down to codex grey or chardion granite....

I'm also hoping to finish my gaming table this summer. My basement is chilly in the winter so I did not get much done in the last few months. The table is an old box spring that I tore off the material so I could have a basement level to the board. I got the idea from Scarab's tables. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/187995.page
After attaching legs & one shelf, I wrapped vinyl flooring around the edge. The pattern I picked out had a stone look that fit with the 40K City feel I was aiming for. It also wrapped around the rounded corner of the box spring perfectly. I left an opening so that people could see into the underhive.
http://www.homedepot.ca/catalog/vinyl-tile/172577
Then I added molding all around.
I've since sanded & painted the molding and it frames out the table nicely.
The underhive has two rooms. One in the table & one on the edge. Both can be covered if I don't want them as part of the game.
I built each room & slid it into the frame when done.

For the white a pale gray wash followed by a thinner or more controlled wash of a slightly darer gray would probably look best. Black would probably be a little to extreme. Within 2 hours I'll have a picture of a cape with both options because I'm curious about this.
EDIT: Black is on the left gray on the right
black looks a little bit dirty while gray just adds shadow. after the wash they probably need a dry-brush of the white.
Sorry about fuzzynes.

When I first started 40k about seven years ago now I had no idea what I was doing & just bought whatever models appealed to me. I ran IG with predators and all sorts of weird funkiness. Anyhow, after about 2 or 3 years of painting without much playing I wanted to repaint a Predator that I had. I thought it would be a bright idea to soak it in Acetone over night.
Guess what? The paint never came off & I was heartbroken to find out that my $30 tank melted on me.
Eventually I sold it to a fellow who used it in his Nurgle army & I've been wondering what I could have done with it ever since. So now I'm toying with the idea of starting a Plague Marine army just so I can try it again. Here's my recent attempt at melting a rhino:
BEFORE:
AFTER:
If you're going to try this at home, use a WELL ventilated area. DO NOT do this INSIDE your house!!!! And don't paint model right after its done because the thinner needs some time to work itself out. Notice the white "frosting" that appears on the model after two or three days.

So I've been slacking on taking photos lately because my setup was lousy, but yesterday I got my act together & built a lightbox with some muslin cloth & a cardboard box. My goal for the beginning of the summer was to work through all my armies & complete painting every one. Well, guess what? That went nowhere. Three frenzy filled days of eBay later and I began a whole new project, bigger and longer than anything I've ever done before. Here's the progress:
This beast is going to double as either a Khorne rhino/ Land Raider or an Ork Battlewagon. I'm having a hard time getting the cab to stay glued to the "wheels" because I used sprues & still need to reinforce.
This is not the rhino from the earlier post. This time I tried acetone. After three hours (I should have watched it more closely), the thing had almost lost all detail. I was horrified. Fortunately, only the bottom half was sitting in the acetone bath. Then things got worse. I washed each model ( 2 rhinos) off thoroughly with water & set them outside to dry. An hour later and they had blown up like balloons. Egads! Back under the water to cool down.
After a few days I worked up the courage to deal with it and tried sawing off the bubbles to give the rhino some of its original shape. Turns out this was the best thing to do!! Each bubble was actually a bunch of tiny bubbles that, when cut, look awesome. So my horrendous mistake turned out to be a neat learning experience. Later I took it easy with the Land Raider.
These photos are after I primed with ArmyPainter spray.
Hmm... Khorne rhinos, Nurgle rhinos, big daemons, what is he up to?
Another hint:

nerdfest09 pm'd me about the spray that I use to texture things so I figured I'd better come clean about my cheaty ways. Here's my confession: I love Michael's craftstore. That place rocks. They have all sorts of cool sprays & paints & resin molds & trays & foam and everything a gamer could love.
In particular, I love this stuff:
I use it on all my bases before I glue on the models:
I spray it on my table to give it a uniform look over big areas of open terrain:
I spray it on my Planetary Empires board to look like rocks (see top post).
I spray it on vehicles to look like mud splatter (see Salamander posts above).
I spray it on terrain to look like crushed concrete (see cathedral post above).
I spray it on my cat to prevent fleas. (see divorce proceedings).
It's great.
Here's some test shots on posterboard:
Here's if you spray on alot. It will gather in little piles. This happens because water (or something like it) sprays out with the stuff so the surface gets wet and the spray congregates in areas.
Here's over a basecoat of brown primer. This how I do my bases.
It comes in different colors, but I've only worked with light grey, dark grey & brown.

Nice long weekend that gave me time to work on a few projects:
Almost finished with Yarrick's Fortress of Arrogance for an APOC game at the end of September. I choose this tank as opposed to a regular Baneblade because I have my Imperial Guard army and a Black Templar army so this will serve as a bridge between the two.
Still need to finish the side panels.
Progress on Chaos Project:
I used Masking Paint to cover the red primed body while I worked on the metal pieces. Presently the metal parts have an undercoat of brown and Tin Bits, sealer, then hairsprayx2, then Boltgun metal then Mithril Silver, & Black ink. Once I have time I will scrub off the top coat so that it looks like rust. Great trick I learned from Forgeworld's Masterclass painting book that Scarab lent me.
You can see how I began pealing off the masking paint here ^.

That's a sweet map and I love how the chaos legions are coming along. Are you just using them as display pieces or in an actual squad?

I have about 75 Chaos Marines all together; each unit represents one Traitor Legion. Some are pretty much done, some just base coated as in the photo. I'll post the entire project upon completion... which won't be for a long while because my wife & I are about to begin a large construction project on the house that will involve lots of furniture moving & miniatures being packed up for months/ weeks.

Finished the Doom of Arthas Moloch campaign last month with an APOC game.
Campaign map as of final week:
Skimmer Side deployment:
Tread Side deployment Alpha:
Tread Side deployment Beta: (right after Skimmer Side dropped wall of smoke)
What APOC is all about:
TONS of dice!!
Eldar go for first blood:
Swooping Hawks risky deployment befuddled by IG:
Tread Side Alpha Flank quickly dismantled:
Treads hope for revenge (before):
After:
One last Sergeant hoping to hold out long enough to claim objective using that APOC stratagem that allows units at less than 50% to hold objectives. We later learned that that only applies to units for the player that choose that stratagem. Vulkan cries himself to sleep in his pillow.
Super Heavies that made appearances:
Great game for a great campaign. Loved using the map, though I had added waaaaaaaay to many extra rules in the campaign guide. Great to have 8 people in a campaign though.

Finally made some progress on the Chaos project over the last two weekends & was able to take some good photos.
Here is the Khorne "rhino" that I have been working on. It could turn into a land raider someday, but at this point I'm happy with the rhino role.
The steps of painting were:
- primed with Army Painter's Rat brown
-sealed
-hairspray
-boltgun metal
-scrubbed with wet toothbrush
-misted with tin bitz
-sealed
-hairspray
-Army Builder red
-scrubbed with wet toothbrush
-drybrushed boltgun metal & chainmail
-sealed
-airbrushed mix of red & brown inks
-sealed

I've been working on my Black Templar army lately. It makes a nice counter part to the Chaos project because its all black whereas the Chaos project includes units from all 9 Traitor Legions. I recently added another Vindicator, a Predator & a second rhino.
Things did not work out so well so I figured I'd post some mistakes & explanations.
I tried the hairspray trick with out a layer of sealer because I read somewhere on dakka that you can do that.
You can't.
I had based the model with primer, then airbrushed a mixture of brown & boltgun metal. Then I went directly to the hairspray and ended with spray enamel black... yeah enamel spray sucks because it is way too goopy & shinny for my liking. Anyhow, back to the missing sealer. Without the layer of sealer, the wet toothbrush.
Luckily I had sprayed the bottom half of the rhino with brown paint & sealer, then hit it with the boltgun metal. That worked out better:

The bottom part looks awesome! Personally I would add some more debt to it by stippling the brown with 1 to 2 lighter tones of rust brown. That would kick * ss.

That is a good idea; I was painting with tin bitz after the fact, but that is a better idea. Thanks. I was thinking of putting on one coat, then inking with another shade, then sealer, and go from there.
The color I am using is Vermin Brown when I use the airbrush or Rat Fur Brown, now called Fur Brown, in spray cans from Army Painter:

So I've allowed myself to get distracted from the Chaos project and have been focused on this Ork kitbash of a Stompa & Baneblade... and Leman Russ, and Chaos vehicles bits, and Land Raider, and Ork trukk, and... well you get the point.
I tried to take photos that show the progression of the primer, sealer, hairspray, 2nd coat, wet toothbrush scrub technique. I have already scrubbed with the toothbrush, but don't have photos yet. I'll edit them in this weekend.
The Ork Stompa arm with cannon will eventually be mounted on the roof of this monstrosity.
I'll also be painting up & adding various crew members in the next few weeks.
Primer:
Detailing before sealer; boltgun metal, Tin Bits, Ink wash:
Sealed, hairsprayed, second paint layer of Catachan green & green ink wash, prescrub:
Post scrub:
Repeating same process as above:
Second layer was Boltgun metal:
Post scrub:
second layer was Army painter spray paint red, BIG pain to scrub off, but that's life:
Other side, somehow got mixed up while taking photos:

They are both Pegasus kits, but I don't know which is which because I bought them on eBay. They came as leftovers from someone who had the original boxes. After putting them together I realized that I did not even need to have glued them together; they are modular. I've looked around to buy more, but they rarely show up on eBay & I have not found anywhere else that sells them cheap.

Ahh, what a coincidence. I've been eying them for a while, but wanted to see how they looked before taking the plunge. They're looking pretty good, as it so happens, haha. This guy on ebay has them for cheaper than anywhere else I've seen and seems to keep them in stock.

Some random projects I'm working on before the summer ends & two other big jobs begin:
I'm converting my IG army into an all Kasrkin / Veteran list. I have about 3 squads done plus these almost done. Heavy but cool looking. They will probably come out in Finecast just when I finish.
Then there's these Black Templars I'm painting for someone else.

Progress on fortress:
This was just before I scrubbed off the layer of Tin Bitz in order to reveal the orangy color underneath.
Kaiser- here's my IG as of August 2011. I sold off my Cadians & Vendetta & like this army much more because I never really liked setting up all those platoons. It was just too much for me to keep straight & I never like having models I don't play with... weird I know, but I like to use every model in an army.
Now the IG feel more like an inquisitor's private army which is what they always were in my mind. I'm still hoping to sell off the heavy weapon squads. And maybe add in another Vendetta; I miss it already.
And some test Blood Angels for Artex:
The free hand on the top of this rhino is sick; I'm very happy with it.

Finished the Blood Angels rhino, but not before some disappointments. When I went to seal it, the sealer foamed up & left me with snowflakes all over the top of the model. I threw a small hissy fit, but whattadyagonna do??

But once I got through it all I began to have doubts that an unmodified human could accomplish such things. At any rate that's one helluva a job. Keep cranking it out so that I can continue to have such an excellent source from which to loot ideas, inspiration, and techniques.

Before I made the stop & go progress on my Imperial Fists & Ultramarine armies, which now that I think of it was last Fall, I was working on a Ravenguard list inspired by the Imperial Armour campaign.
The list was mostly scouts with Telion & Shrike. The army took a lot of effort because I spent a ton of time working on the bases while I was just learning the salt trick, but petered out once I began painting because work started & I got distracted by Grey Knights or whatever the latest army was back then. Well the Stormtalon just came out this month & I needed an army to fit it into, and wah-lah, Ravenguard moved to the top of the list again. I got most of the base paint coats down and major detail work, but got distracted by the shnazy Forgeworld decal sheet that I've had for months. But overall the army is coming together quickly now & the Stormtalon makes a nice motivator. I'll post more photos if anyone is interested.
Little more detail work necessary on the interior:
The original mold's weapons are a little to clunky for my liking so I cut away a bit of stuff and inserted magnets so I could take off the assault cannons when I want to:

With the coming of summer, I have a lot more free time on my hands & this week I got down to business on a plethora of projects. Of course, I'm great at beginning & lousy at finishing. For example, while organizing my Ork bits after building 2 bommas/ dakkajets & one battlewagon, I decided it would be a good idea to build an obliterator... even though I haven't played my CSM army in over a year. But I had that other Obliterator scratch built from a DE grotesque so I built this guy as his partner in crime:
I think I'll wait until the new CSM codex & models come out before I mount a weapon on his shoulder. That way he will be at least a little recognizable as an oblit.
I'm working on a pair of Ork fliers right now in order to narrow down which mix of yellow paint I want to use on my own jet. I'll sell them both on eBay & then build one just for me. So far I have both painted using the yellow Tausept Ochre Foundation color, but one I added a coat of Golden yellow paint & the other I used Lamenters Yellow Glaze. The glaze is actually significantly brighter (think pop-ier) than the Golden yellow one. I think GW is really on to something with this new paint line. Anyhow here's the Lamenters Yellow Dakkajet using the salt & hairspray trick (before & after shown)
I also figured I'd add another battlewagon to my list: (I'll post more progress when I decide what color to make it. Right now its either the yellow of the dakkajet or the blue of the Orks I posted earlier in this thread.)
I've been putting off making Objective markers, but doing all this Ork stuff put me in the mood to crank out these:
My FLGS has been having a painting league for the past three months so this month (June 2012) I painted up the Ravenguard Stormtalon that I posted earlier and these Space wolves:
And I added these DE to my DE army:

I think that's evolved beyond what anyone would let you call a "Battlewagon", and well into Superheavy territory. Looking good!

Yes...but neither "Battlesuper-heavy" nor "Super-heavywagon" have the same ring (although I'm liking the sound of the 2nd one....)...

Working on a few random projects for friends & myself:
Ork Dakkajets, one for me, one for Kaiservonhugal
Dark Eldar "Bastion" for the guy who's gonna win NOVA:
Progress on the side panels for my Fortress of Arrogance:
Added some Paladins to a Draigo list that I took to a local tournament (and proceeded to get CRUSHED all 3 games, yeah, I'll stick to painting.)
That's a Vulcan model I'm working on on the right.

Had the chance to get my grubby little fingers on a Zone Mortalis set this summer- not mine, but painted for a client. My latest thoughts on terrain is that any set or in entire tableworth of terrain should have a unifying color and be kinda bland at the same time. This makes the models on the table pop when you play a game. So for this set I did almost the entire thing with an airbrush & stuck to just detailing the pipes & computers by hand.
I was surprised by the low quality of this FW cast; there were tons of bubbles & missing segments of pipes, but I would be willing to bet that this was actually a recast of a FW kit. When the client first gave me the four panels they were black plastic; garbage bag color almost. I've never seen any FW kits in that color, but maybe there's something I don't know. This painter had black panels so maybe it is real FW: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iq9zknu2P8w

Now that the Chaos codex has come out, I have been adding to my CSM army. In the past I began this army with the goal of having one squad from each of the Traitor Legions & that led to:
Troops = Word Bearers, Emperor's Children, Berzerkers/ World Eaters, Plague Marines/ Death Guard, Black Legion & Thousand Sons
Elites= Alpha Legion as infiltrating Chosen
Fast= Night Lords as Raptors
Heavy= Iron Warriors as Havocs
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-5729-9127_Nurgle%20Project%20July%202010.html
Now I'm looking for that to change with the new codex. I have a nice base of infantry models all painted up & ready to go. I added some Cultists, Fantasy River Trolls as Mutilators, Fantasy Ogre Stonehorn as my Maulerfiend, and the Fantasy Khorne lord on juggernaut as, well, a lord on juggernaut. I wanted to add the Heldrake, but am not a fan of the model so I came up with this:
(not done yet)
Presently I feel like there is alot of gold trim on the wings, but not much on the body so there is that disconnect between the two. I'm wondering for I shouldn't have included the shoulder bits from the Heldrake model to tie the two together, but I'm still very happy with this one.
I'll post the Ogre Stonehorn, Juggerlord & Cultists soon.

Great stuff! I still need to get me some of that zone mortalis goodness. I love the paint scheme you went with, it does seem to be lacking in other colours to make it pop out, some darker shades would really help methinks.
Nice conversion with the storm talon! Like you said, there does seem to be quite a disconnect between the wings and the body, some gold trim painted onto the rest of it should tie the whole thing together nicely.
Oh and that Fortress of Arrogance. Perfect!

Looks good so far. You could extend the brass edging over the sides of the talon to blend the kits a bit I think. (higlight the edges in brass if not actually sculpting on bits.
but very nice so far G

Won a crazy eBay bid the week before Thanksgiving; $90 for all this stuff plus a squad of Catachan:
In these photos, I was not done yet, but I have since finished them with some detailing (and pilots for the Vendetta) and my first foray into weathering powders. Thanks Kaiservonhugal for the tutoring.
What was crazy about this eBay auction was that everything was so cheap and when I received the items, it turned out they had been glued together with Elmers glue!! Crazy I know, but it was super easy to bust everything apart, file down sprue nobs, and glue back together.
I had a ton of free time over the Thanksgiving weekend and everthing you see here was done with my airbrush except for the red Chaos stars. I did a ton of the salt & hairspray trick. At first the green layers came almost completely off so I had to redo that stage. But I realized that with the second attempt I used a slightly different shade which turned out to give the paint job some realistic depth.
I'll post the finished photos when I get home from visiting family over the holidays.

In preparation for a campaign at our FLGS The Whiz on Route 9 in Worcester, MA, I built this using cork board. Each hole for the little flags has been replaced with a rare earth magnet so that the map is magnetized to the frame. That way tokens will stick to the map & the map can hang on a wall.
Players can make easy markers using nails. I'm magnetizing a set of Epic rhinos for my tokens.

I'm working on a Fateweaver model and noticed that one of my bottles of instant glue has quit working. Some of my hobby supplies were part of an eBay auction from a few months ago so I don't know why this glue doesn't work, but has anyone else experienced glue "expiring"?
The bottle on the left has a brown tint. That's the non-sticky glue.

Soooo Pro Tip:
If you're going to prime a bunch of little bits in a box lid out in the yard on a windy day, don't walk away and come back after a few hours. If you do, be prepared to walk around your yard looking for little black bits that have scattered far & wide.

:/ hope you found everything. If priming bits I tend to stick them to masking tape to keep them in place.
By the way, Fatey from you previous post is looming good so far.

It occurred to me to use the salt & hairspray trick to make a symbol on my vehicles that is the lava core at the heart of every Salamander.
Working on Salamander drop pods:
Using an airbrush I created the lava look:
Added the salt:

I'm also painting some Word Bearers for a friend. I made some color palettes to compare different paints with different primers:
The paints are in the same pattern as the paint bottles, using the white to stack the one bottle.
