Miguelsan´s Armies. Attack on the Grey Titanic Pile 2024. @ 2010/07/05 04:07:24

Post by: Miguelsan

I´ve been collecting figures for years but unfortunately for GW I never could get into the 40K look (tho I have a mostly GW Undead army ) so I started collecting Warzone figures in its heyday and was very upset when the game went belly up. So for some years I simply stored my figures and stared at them until my brother convinced me of start playing 40K with my stuff.

So I started completing my Mishima Samurai to use them as Eldar because it´s the only assault army I could imagine my samurai in... I thought about nids but only for a sec. After seeing the DKoK I convinced myself that I wanted to start a WW1 IG army modeled after the FW gorgeous but really expensive figures no matter that the current metagaming looks kindly on mech/aeromech forces. So I grabbed some GW stuff that I like (CCS box and HWT) got nearly 200+ Warzone figures and started converting.

I´m about half way done towards the 1500pts line and to motivate myself I decided to start posting stuff here. The base colors are browns for the uniform with greys for the armor plates. Once I´m finished with all the figures I´ll have a mass dip party for building shadows and if some sanity remains I´ll highlight the armor plates... yeah that´s the plan... I think...(I´m starting to regret going IG horde)

To start my Count As armor. a LRBT and a Griffon converted from Tamiya kits, a Carro Armato 13/40 and the Semovente 75 that share the same hull for an homogeneus look

The Hauptmann, Warzone Bauhaus officer with the machine gunner counting as plasma. To his right a regular squad with a GL

More stuff

A PCS with more plasma and another regular squad FT this time

HWTs, the best GW box if you have bits and a little bit of imagination

That´s all for now, I´ll be posting more stuff as it is finished and also from my Eldar Samurai.

Warzone has some nice figures. Pity about the scale wonkyness, but it doesn't seem to show up in your stuff. Like the Russ best. Will you be doing any of the walkers? The Capitol ones are probably the best match for sentinels - the Bauhous look more like dreadnaughts, IMHO.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I know what you mean about the HWT box - it seems really expensive, but only if you play by GW's rules and don't get 9 HWT out of it.

Nope, my brother had three Vulcan Battlesuits but I don´t know where they went.

About the scale, although 1/48 is closer to 40K I found out that that´s not true for the early war tanks where 1/35 fits better and I can avoid issues with the hatches and doors beings too small.

Today I was building my LasCan Battery when I realised half way(and after using a ton of superglue) that I built them the wrong way, aghhhhhhh!

I meant the scale on the warzone stuff - I think 1/35 early war tanks do very well indeed - I have a number in various armies. It seems like warzone switched scale half way through - their plastics are from the earlier, less heroic era, while the metals you see are mostly quite large.

Kestral. Actually the metals you can see in the photo above are from the first "big heads" batch for Warzone 1 ed, in the last ed the figures were being scaled back to more realistic proportions along with the plastics.

Today I´m posting another squad I finished pending the final dip and dry brushing and my Count as Chimera, a Tamiya halftrack. I didn´t touch this one much, just to replace the MG 42 for a heavy flamer.

And the infantry squad, one down a thousand to go.

Very cool army. I'm subscribed, and I'm looking forward to seeing these Mishima Samurai. I've been looking for some goos samurai models for an eldar exodite army.

Nice use of the warzone minis! I have a few scatered around in my bitz box, but never did anything with them -maybe I should, after seeing yours!

I like the chainsword and flamer conversions - they give it a very 40K feel. Those are conversions, right? Very much like the grey and tan scheme, and would also like to see the Mishima...

I always thought the minis had gotten larger - props to warzone for not making them larger like every company seems to.

Been lazy lately and not much has advanced. Down I have posted two Venusian Rangers that I´m going to use as Commissars, the figures are almost finished but as you can see the armor is not shaded, I´m torn between blacklining them with a micron pen or go for a badab wash plus highlighting, I hate painting white armor.

For the few that asked these three are in my Eldar Samurai army, Warzone Mishima Hatamoto being used as Warlocks, one day I´ll install photoshop and do some cool glowy patterns for the bases (and do better job with the wichtblade too )

And last one of the few GW pieces in my armies and only because I think it´s the only cool Eldar Lord, Maugan Ra. I got the mini from a trade with fellow dakkite Artik Firangi, Maugan was missing the shurican and the backpack but I had some bits around.

I´m bringing back my threat from the dead as I have commited to the next NagoyaHammer tournament and need to motivate myself. Again my IG takes the field and to celebrate it my latest WiP a Taurus Venator using an old Void Ronin Vehicle with magnets for weapon swapping. And why 2 HK missiles you might wonder, well with twin-link lascan plus scouting I think the Taurus will appear kill something hopefully and then be utterly crushed before it can have another go, so better to make that turn count.

I decided to change a little bit my LasCanons using the UK 25 pounder gun carriage as a guide. Prior model can be seen above but will post it again for comparison.

The new version looks more robust

Also I´ve been working on some Warzone Blood Berets to use as Storm Troopers in a double melta configuration.

There they are standing in front of a wip bunker.

Nagoya Hammer is over and my IG got kicked around. The worst match was on the third game were necrons got the upper hand in close terrain and ate my tanks for lunch. On the positive side there is a second LR painted and a Basilisk built on a M7 Priest thats just needs its crew and some details more. So I´m posting 3 photos of my current armor support.

HWT and my artillery prepare to smash Space Puppies.

The calm before the scarabs swarms.

Necrons just about to eat my tanks. The LR can swap weapons between the vanilla LR and the Exterminator.

Another squad down, it would be nice that I'm clearing my to do pile except for the fact that I pledged in the Warzone KS and I'll be even in more trouble when my zillion figures arrive.

They will count-as Swooping Hawks and eventually will get finished bases... eventually

Living in Japan this is why GW rising prices don't bother me so much. It's a rushed paint job and the kit was mediocre at best but then it cost me 252yen and I just wanted to check how it would look finished.

Now if the Wraithknight is as overpowered as the price level suggest it's time for me to start hunting for another count-as.

An update long overdue. This is my current all infantry IG, as seen it's 1165 points. As I'm building based on the miniatures I have rather than the most efficient, the list is less than optimal.

I'm not very sure where I want to go from here. I could add Comissars to the blobs to keep them in place or Stormtroopers, perhaps even some mortars for camping an objectve while harrasing the enemy.

Last week I worked on a few Bauhaus figures with the aim of expanding my IG horde list with all my Warzone figures.

also finished half my home made ADL, next is to build some connecting pieces to allow some variety.

Perhaps I will add some more detail to the interior, like ammo cases or other pieces of trench debris.

As usual instead of continuing with my Infantry Squads I jump to another half finished project.

Terrain from the Impudent Mortal guys, wanted to magnetize it but failed so I glued it, sprayed some Tamiya aluminium and currently I'm in between layers of mahogani varnish to weather it a bit. The 4 veterans are there to give an idea of the size.

plus a close view of the veterans, made with the old WZ plastic troops with alternate heads (Secrets of the 3rd Reich I think) and GW weapons. I thought that I had 2 more meltas but for the life of me I can't find them now, I'll have to trick somebody around here for a trade becuase I'm totally not buying the GW ones at japanese prices.

Back on track I managed to finish one HWT, just three more to go... for now.

Made with bits, cardboard, many curses, lots of glue (the reason of said curses) and love . The crew are a mix of Urban War and GW with Pig Iron heads. It's not 100% finished as I need to apply some weathering podwers and probably add more rivets to be up to IG standards but I joined NANOWRIMO and my figures will have to share my free time with the magnificent story that will give me the Literature Nobel and make me rich... I wish

Next in the to do list: FINISH MY PROJECTS BEFORE MORE MINIATURES ARRIVE!!!!!!!

Ah, being in Japan, you really have access to some of the best models around for some of the best prices. I envy you. Though, if I lived there, I'd be broke.

I've always liked those Warzone plastics. They work great as Imperial Guard. Their only true downside is that their poses are so limited.

True, poses are limited but faceless horde has a certain charm too. On the other hand a Tamiya kit that costs half price and looks better than a GW one with some conversion effort (that I love) is much a better piece to paint and enjoy.

My Quad-gun is missing someplace around the seas around Japan so I decided to convert a small squad of Krieg Combat Engineers to substitute in my current list. I made (I think ) a good use of the Scion helmeted heads, cut away the magazines from the guns and now I'm searching for some cables to use as the fuel line conecting both members of the heavy flamer team.

Been slacking painting lately, mostly the usual burnout after the rush to finish stuff for Nagoyahammer but last weekend found a few interesting old Space Battleship Yamato at the store and had to get some. Ofc I had to convert the very simple bomber to something more of my liking like a Btech Shilone ASF.

But the Chaos Gods were angry at me and while carving the cockpit glass out of a piece of clear sprue, my very sharp blade slipped, went through the small protection I use on my thumb and sliced deep into it :O It was really painful and somewhat flashy with all the blood spurtting around.
(Not pictured: lot's of blood)
That has put a stick in my "painting wheels"... it doesn't help that on Monday I got my new desktop too and now I'm discovering the marvels of Windows 8

using the scion heads on the "old warzone " minis is a stroke of genius! your huge good looking army deserves way more attention... you have some very cool looking conversions shown here!
I too own a zillion off the warzon minis and the heads always where the weakest point for me...so I guess the stuff will now eventually get used after all...thanks for the inspiration! also...did you find the plastic of stronger structure than GW stuff? it always gives me a hard time to cut through the sprues to pry free my minis....

cheers, vik

Thanks Vik. Frankly working with the old WZ plastics is a bitch too hard to cut and dealing with mold lines is a pia but then for most Rank and File IG no need to put any effort, faceless hordes are what brought me to IG.

Today taking advantage of my wife's absence
I think I'll paint them following the Homeworld Kushan color scheme rather than the gamilion green.

This is a really cool thread and army you got going. I picked up a bunch of warzone figs last year, I love them. The plastic is very hard, and not easy to deal with, but the models are absolutely amazing. The detail on them is better than cheapo models today.

Kudos to you, I really enjoy seeing them brought back to life. Subscribed!

Thanks for the comments. I had to refrain myself from buying 1/200 Dougran/Btech kits yesterday, it was really hard! Been slowly progressing and today I finished a Gamilion ship using Homeworld colors. I plan to make two fleets one in Kushan pattern and the other in Taiidan even if it involves lots of rage at having to paint yellow

I hope to have them ready before July to ressurect Renegade Legion: Leviathan for gaming around Kobe.

Long time in between posts again, mainly because 7th ed killed my drive to play and that made me stop painting. Taking advantage of the holidays back home I rescued my old btech miniatures from the storage closet and painted them in one go. Desert colors with very basic techinques, might do some weathering later on after I buy some hex bases. The Victor is not mine, some guy painted it for me like 20 years ago, when my skills where close to 0.

also more wip ships.

One set of Destroids I got on Christmas and the Bigger Bandai version. I will point that the 1/100 Warhammer cost me less than one of the new RTT ones

The RTT Warhammers got some platicard on the legs and waist to bring them inline with my old Btech collection.

Some very nice stuff to work n I see here! I may also improvise some APCs with cheap kits of Hanomag Halftracks from a local store.

Meanwhile I also recall the pain of the old Warzone failing in the face of the shadow of GW it was trying to grow in.

It's not only that the kits are cheaper, it's the aesthetics. Warzone was my 1st miniature game, I was really sad when Target shafted the whole thing. The PRODOS KS was godsent even if it was a bumpy road.

I used the old Eradicator for a guide. Don't know exactly what shade of blue Target used in the originals so I used Vallejo Model Air pale blue over a grey primer, highlighted with Pale Blue from the regular Model Color line. The metal is Vallejo metal grey over a black base drybrushed with oily steel and GW Mithril Silver.

Again painting mood sets in after months of inactivity so time to rescue this thread and post some new figures I've panted in the last week. As GW keeps pumping out expensive kits that I don´t like at all I turn back to the classics, Btech! I am now the happy owner of about 40 mechs and incredible for me more than half are painted

A lance painted in DCMS colors. Dragon, Panther, Grasshopper and Jenner.

Finished the lance in Crucis Lancers colors. From Left to right: Enforcer, Dervish. Cyclops. Jagermech.
I also dug out some half painted mechs in desert camo that currently are taking a bath to remove all the dust. These will be, hopefully, be done in the next few days.

Individual photos.

@Kestral. That would imply I can take good photos of my miniatures
The EDDs are lovely but unfortunately the legs were badly cast and have buckled under the weight of the torso. I should straighten them and then somehow reinforce the ankles but I don't dare.

This week's miniature is a 1st gen mutant from Warpath/Deadzone that had been staring me with hate filled eyes from the unpainted pile for months. Lots of drybrush was involved in the making, and for some unexplained reason the blue paints managed to win the battle over the official Mantic reds.

There is no way to glue the plastic sheet to the wood without it becoming unstuck the moment you apply a bit of force to the surface. I tried with a hotglue gun and the brand Aron Alpha especially designed for PET plastics both failed.

Last week I managed a couple of games with my Stormtroopers and found how badly I know 8th edition rules. 1st game was against Puppy Marines, that I won handily by generously applying plasma. 2nd game was against 1000Sons and got massacred, especially when I found that melta bombs cannot be used in close combat now and the Defiler ate my Eversor.
On the Terrain Building front I managed to put together a dangerous materials shed, that as per Imperial custom follows none of the OSHA regulations. Also after much dicking around I was advised to pin the plastic to the wood for extra resistance after gluing it on my big highrise.

Nagoyahammer 2018 came and left, leaving me with the sweet taste of victory. Mark my words the world is going to end soon due to this untarnished record. Took some pics of the three games we managed on Saturday.

Preparing our first game agains a lovely Eldar Exodite army. I built all the terrain of the table with the high rise needing a bit more work before it's finished.
Dino Eldar are best Eldar.

The IG will not surrender to the dandelion eaters!

The Vindicare on his perch.

Second game was against IG and a Baneblade of some flavor.

My IG was pressed due to the fact that half my army were deepstriking Stormtroopers.

But suddenly the cavalry arrived to the rescue and flooded the enemy's backfield with plasma. Sadly we ran out of time and had to end the game before the big close combat showdown.

3rd game matched me against Primaris Marines helping some AdMech and Inquisition.

The Vindicare takes a snipping position daring the enemy to shoot him (That they do and by virtue of his annoying -2 to the die skill fail to kill him)

Unfortunately for my opponent the mission was a bad match for his army. Not enough bodies to contest all objective barrels so I ended up racking up vps. (In the pictures you can see him holding just one versus the 2 I already had, it got worse from there)

Stormtroopers dropped and cleared the troops in the middle but a marine refused to die no matter how hard I shot him.

FINALLY he dies and then the Captain follows.

Victory for IG.

Josh inspired me to go for one more miniature, and it turned into two. I had the mortificators on the back painted already so before calling it quits for the year, and due to a very inconvenient cold that left me trapped home I decided to pait a third one along with a Keeper of the Art that I got from a friend. The keeper was missing his "power radiators" so I ordered a set of Doc Ock arms to replace them.

Time to bring back this thread from the dead and post a few images. The last few months were kind of a wash on the number of miniatures but I built some terrain for our anual meeting at Nagoya. In 2019 we decided to scale down and play just 1000 pts but maybe it's for the best as the lower point level makes for a more relaxing atmosphere as the real reason we meet each year is to see fellow players we would barely see otherwise.

I played against Necrons (loss), Nids (tie), and Nurgle Demons (win) with a Stormtrooper/Assassin list. In all a great day.

Here is my table. Yes too crowded for some, but I feel it still needs more terrain, at the very least another big building.

1st game against Necrons.

An Eversor visits a bunch of necrons camping their home objective.

2nd game vs Nids.
After a first turn shot from a Vindicare blew up a Zoanthrope the field went strangely quiet.

Oh, they are all here.

Also the sneaky bugs dug underground and ate my units for lunch.

3rd game vs Nurgle.
This game was a bad match. We were playing a modified reserve mission where we only could have up to 1/3rd of our army on turn one. Rolling for reserves starting turn 2. My oponent was unlucky because I managed to drop all my units save one on the second turn. Including all 3 missing assassins. Nurgle units are tought but not enough to wade through all the plasma I hurled at them. It was a lucky victory rather than skill on my part.

Everybody arrives and suddenly the nurglings feel lonely.

End game.

Thanks to all my opponents and the rest of the usual crew for my yearly dose of fun!

Bringing this thread back from the dead so I motivate myself to chip away that pile of grey shame harder. It's not that I've been fighting the good fight since the last post but slower than I'd like.
Between my last post and today I've completed an Imperial Knight army composed by 3 big GW knights, and 4 alternate baby knights. Added a bunch of units to my Stormtroopers, and to my IG, returned to Battletech, and a few bits, and bobs more.

Today I bring you the latests pics. A Veteran IG KT.

Since May I managed to finish a fair number of minis. Maybe not as much as I bought, but that's the bane of us all methinks. The last two figures of 2022 were these Pegasus scout bikes from Wz 1st Ed. They'll end up probably being proxied as eldar jetbikes in my count as army if I can get a third one. One of the things that helped me painting more miniatures during 2022 were contrast paints. Truly a great time saver for painters like me whe.n combined with slapchop.

My New Year's resolution won't be to paint more. I think I did well last year but to take better pictures, and share them in Dakka.

I wish you dakkaites a fructiferous 2023!

The first set of finished figures for 2023 is a Liao lance of the Syn's Hussars. Second line troops of questionable skills, nonetheless the cammo pattern of dark green with jade green highlights made them easy to paint. I swear that it' take me more time to settle down on a paint scheme than to paint them.

and a hormagaunt I got from GW for "free". Unfortunately Dakka's gallery barely shows the contrast between dark grey and glossy black. Maybe I need to invest in a proper light box.

Some cool stuff going on in here!

I love the clear bases - I used them for my guard too with the idea that they would show whatever terrain was on the table we were playing on, but couldn't get them to stick without scuffing it all up so ended up using nromal basing material on them anyway. Yours look exactly how I'd wanted mine to!

The space vampires are very cool and evocative, where did they come from?

The Knights look brilliant as well with the tan tying them together and their individual accents.

Great stuff!

ph34r, If you think the Lyran colors were striking...

I present the GOLD Urbie.

Because nothing can beat an Urbanmech (and the meme) and I can prove it.

Nice work. I like the green on the shield.

Aye the shield is an absolute standout there.

Thanks, I thought the shield needed something to break the monotony of the metal, and went for jade green.

I was bored ans instead of finishing other wips I built, converted, and painted some nids the way the Hivemind intended Probably these will be use instead of Nid Warriors for Kill Team Into the Dark games.

And today I finished the last few walls of the Kazumi temple I bought back in 2022. Ready for Warcry, Kill Team, or any other game where a healthy dose of cover, and heavy terrain is needed.

My friends started a new channel in Discord about historicals, and that reminded me that these babies had been in storage for 15 years. I should repaint my capital ships with a more historical deck shade, though in reality the IJN official colors differed between shipyards, and the weathering of the decks so anything would go. The US Navy will stay dazzle camo for faster recognition if I ever manage to get a game.

The jungle is one step closer to completion. Not sure if I want to add a last dry brush of vibrant gree, or star adding the plants.

What did you use to attach the plants to the bases? Nothing I've tried has ever worked.

I have a cheap hot glue gun for that, I drill a hole, fill it with glue, and stick the plant inside.

Edit: Group shot.

Goodbye 2023. It was a good year from a hobby standpoint, and I managed to complete my goal. Without further ado I upload the star of 2023. Archon's Dungeons and Lasers Xenodragon.

I hope I can paint as many figures in 2024 as I did in the closing year.
