Ok, so in light of all the 'favourite [insert 40k thing]' threads, I thought we should do a favourite Primarch one. This is not a which is the best thread, it's a which is your favourite so no trolly "well my primarch could beat your primarch in a fight..."
So then, vote in the poll and post your reason.
Too hard, in a way, atleast for me. But then again, I don't know particularly much about the primarchs.
If I did vote (Which I did not), it'd have come down to: Dorn Vulkan Magnus Perturabo
What makes the Primarchs the most is their personalities. Magnus and Perturabo for instance, both utterly loyal, allong with their legions. But in the end, it was the Emperor that got them turned. Emperor let his puppies out on one-eye, and Perturabo and his legion were just "extra's" in all of the legends and records, even though they performed most of the masterminding and executioning of wars when involved in joint operations with other legions. Infact, they were spread so thinly, the Iron Warriors just became depressed and bored, and angry for just being a garrison force and a siege tool for the other legions. Such tragic betrayel, in both cases.
Vulkan, I've forgotten why I like him. Something to do with him hunting giant lizards or something .
Dorn, he just kinda went berzerk trying to kill Perturabo after the heresy.. screwed his mind up a bit, lost thousands of marines. He was just so stubborn, angry and blind with rage, and was clinging desperately to thoughts of revenge, even though they were all futile. Anyway, I'll let you read the rest of the fluff for yourself, should you wish, Ludd.
Oh yeah, I've picked Mortarion, I've just started reading flight of the eisenstein (no spoilers please) and in my mind, you can't beat super mega ninja scythes/ drinking poison
I love Night Haunter. He blew up his own planet, went insane, and then accepted his own failures and had himself killed by someone he could easily take. He is, I have to say, kind of a big deal.
Sanguinius.
He gave his life to defeat Horus without a second thought, and it was his by blade that allowed the Emperor to defeat Horus.
And Gold armor and long flowing hair.
Sanguinius. Even though I may be ticked off that he took the place of the best Guardsman ever (Forgot the name, I believe he was a guardsman who came onto Horus' Battle Barge with the Emprah, and died attempting to save Empy from Horus. Then it became some Honor Guard Spess Mehren, then a Primarch. THANKS GW)
Fulgrim is my Fave because in a way he is not a traitor. he was just possessed. In the HH books, Fulgrim Didn't know what was happening in tell it was to late. So maybe Pree Heresy Fulgrim.

My favorite is Sanguinius. Anybody that knows they are going to die in a battle, yet still advancing to participate (e.g. Battle with Horus) in that battle is courageous.
Also, I despise sanguinius. "Oh, how tragic! I must tragically perish in a tragic way in the most tragic time of this tragic imperium!"
Pretty boy, go fix your makeup.
You are thinking on the same lines as me and Dark...

This is partly wrong. A lone person did come in even after Sanguinius died. Sanguinius goes all "I know I'm gonna die, but maybe I can stall him. Death charge!" then dies. Then The Emprah shows up and goes all "Zomg, Horus what have you done!" and is still thinking that Horus can be saved. The Emprah then gets his holy-ass handed to him because the Emprah is holding back.
Then a lone terminator runs in to save the day (It use to be a lone guardsman) and proceeds to just die horrifically. The Emprah at that point realized that Horus could not be saved and uses his eye-beam of doom to kill Horus. By this point the Emprah was mortally wounded.
Everyone else comes in and goes "Nooooooooo, we're too late. Let's hook him up to a golden chair"
The end.
Or that's what I've learned over the course of being in Dakka.
Lorgar, Kurze and Morty were close, but in the end it's got to be Alpharius Omegon. I'm currently reading Legion, and even though he hasn't turned up yet (I think...but maybe one of the Alpharius' actually was Alpharius, and the fact that they are all Alpharius made me miss the fact that he was indeed Alphariu...GAH, IT'S SO CONFUSING!) I still know that he's going to be badass. Not only did he run his Legion well, but his manipulations (or rather, Dan Abnett's, but we're counting them as the Primarch's) are even misleading me as well, which is difficult to do in literature. Also, his secret is quite literally mind blowing.
Little lord Fauntleroy wrote:Perturabites? Really?
Yeah. Anyway, when I said siege to it, I meant lay siege to it so I can get Ludd to put a "change vote" on this poll, so I can then consider hopping bandwagon.
Although, doing said changes may result in all the votes being lost.. I know from experience - but that was changing the options, not vote change option.
Perturabo is awesome though - just look at the steel cage (was it?).. or the iron fortress.. or whatever.. I'll have to go and look that up later..
Ah, so hard to choose. Interesting that so many primarchs are favored that are my most detested. I guess that is why they are opinions.
My opinion, Rogal Dorn. I like his stubbornness, which is offset by his levelheaded tactics. He runs an organized and formal chapter, but none of the rampant glory seeking. *cough* Guilliman *cough* I admire his loyalty and he must have some exceptional qualities (in addition to fortress building) that the Emperor recognized, since he kept him close so often.
What I really want is more face time for primarchs Khan, Vulkan, Perturabo and Corax, so we can really see their personalities. Especially Khan for me. He's like a primarch fluff black hole.
Also, why aren't the missing primarchs listed? Can't someone's favorites be the lost or mysterious? Someone who really loves mysteries might prefer them to the known primarchs.

LOOK AT THIS fething GUARDSMAN.
He's spent months fighting a grueling war in which his enemies are demigods allied with daemons, and now he's found himself in the closest thing to Hell he's ever known. He probably wasn't even supposed to get teleported up to the arch-traitor's battle barge in the first place, and just ended up in the wrong place at the worst possible time.
Somehow he's survived horrors beyond comprehension to make his way to the very bridge of Horus' flagship. He saw a veritable angel call upon Horus to answer for his crimes, and he saw that angel die as messily as any guardsman. His Emperor - who he fervently believes is a god incarnate, even if he's not supposed to - lies mortally wounded, and Horus, perhaps, has taken a moment to gloat before he strikes the killing blow.
His armor is slightly more effective than tissue paper, his weapon is slightly more powerful than a flashlight, and Horus' power claw is bigger than his entire body. He stands before a being infused by the dark gods with incalculable power, that can and will obliterate his soul with no more effort than it would take him to swat a gnat. Nothing he can do could possibly make a difference.
He could run. He could turn his weapon on himself. He could give in to the insidious whispers that echo from the ship's corridors into his mind.
Ollanius Pius does the duty his Emperor requires of him. He dies standing, and holding the fething line.

I decided to only include named official fluff primarchs... I thought having "Lost Primarch of legion II and XI" might not work, sorry.
Sanguinius because of the effect his death would have on his legion and later the BA chapter and their predecessors. And the whole bit about him weakening horus just enough for the emperor to swoop in and finish his business.

I know it was a guardsmen. Was. They changed it in one of the editions of Space Hulk I believe. Someone posted the entire little mini-story that came with the game and it mentioned a Terminator who was practically flayed alive in front of the Emperor.
If I recall correctly, wasn't it a Custode who walked into the room after Horus had wounded the Emperor? Or at least thats the fluff in the collected visions book. Which I never quite understood: Emperor-"Okay, Horus has killed millions, turned his back on his father an brothers, and given himself over to the Dark gods of Chaos. He can still be saved."
*Random Custode walks in, Horus hits him with a mind-lazor.*
Emperor-"NOOO!!! Not nameless Custode #253! He's gone too far this time!" *Proceeds to eat Horus' face.*

OK, was surfing the Dakka gallery and I found this...
I love this model and decided that as a new direction for this thread, you can post up your favourite artwork/model of your chosen primarch...
Leman Russ. I hate Space Wolves for the horn-helmed viking cartoons they remind me of, but if you isolate Russ from the pups and ignore the whole future/space thing, you could reasonably drop him into Anglo-Saxon/Germanic heroic poetry, and I like that.
In fact, I think I would like the Space Wolves, in general, much more if they existed only in the fluff. It's the half-shaved, half-braided Yosemite Sam models (not to mention the 7ppm (pelts per model) apparent quota), color scheme, and occasional over the top "VIKINGS ARE THE COOLESTEST BECUASE THEY [insert ignorant assumption here] AND THE SPEHHS WOLFS IZ SPEHS VIKINZ!!1!" bull that really turns me off of them.

Don't get me wrong, I like Alpharius and Omegon, but they were shown the future and chose to destroy mankind, in order to save the rest of the galaxy from Chaos. Hard choice, yes. Protect mankind, no.
What I do like about them is that they and their legion are traitors/rebels and not actually chaos marines. Well, perhaps they are now, but they weren't initially. For that matter, is there any fluff saying they are chaos-ed at all?
BikeMenace wrote:Voted Alpharius and his brother. they were shown the future and made the hard choice to protect mankind. " THE REAL GREATER GOOD"
Amen to that brother!
Can't say I would vote for some one who turned against everyone he ever served/protected just because some aliens showed him a slide show about the "future"..

No, they choose to destroy The Imperium to save Mankind. Even then none of that matters now. Now they do nothing.
Because subtlety works best when applied to unsubtle methods.
Because bitter and twisted is what traitor astartes are supposed to be.
Because there's no such thing as overkill...
Because the old 3rd ed basilisks can overcompensate for not only your own penis, but every other penis in the sector...
Magnus... he blew up a daemonically possessed eldar titan with his mind.
He was going to be the new gran poobah of the webway, after emprah finished bulding the gate on terra.
He thought one of Tzeench's princes out of existance.
To me the only clear choice is the Lion. Though there are a bunch of cool dudes here, cunning and precise, once his mind is made up he makes it happen.
Now after reading Thousand Sons I have to say Russ has to be a huge hypocrite. No-one can have librarians but my stormcallers are ok.

Actually it never said Leman Russ had that opinion. we only know wyrdmake believes his powers are different from those of the Thousand Sons. and when you first see
Spoiler:
wyrdmake on prospero he is accompanied by a sister of silence (possibly on purpose). I also don't remember him using his powers in the battle except to defend himself against Ahriman.
Magnus the red. He was a flake, but he almost killed leman russ, which is worthy of props.

Defend himself? He went after the captains on purpose and wrecked havoc upon their libraries with the aid of psychic powers, not defense.
Wyrdmake was a giant gakhead. I'm glad ahriman did what he did to him. He deserved every piece of that torture!
I like Ferrus Manus, but the whole mutated freaks hidden in the basement thing always stuck me as odd. As human beings solely designed to kill, I could never wrap my mind around the fact that he couldn't terminate all the monsters they had made. However, great looking chapter and cyborgs are always awesome!

I like Ferrus too, just not as numero uno. Where he is definitely first place is in the order of Primarch deaths. He was the first to die, not a pleasant distinction, and that always set him in a strange position for me. He is a very poignant character for the Heresy storyline (demonstrating how far this war would really go).

As it stands:
Loyalist primarchs- 52% of votes
Traitor primarchs- 48% of votes

He is saves Terra from being overwhelmed by chaos by leading the charge to recapture the spaceport while the others are holed up in the palace hoping for rescue. Plus he leads the baddest motorcycle gang ever. How cool is that?
Corax FTW!!!! He, as a 20- something year old, lead an uprising against his corrupt superiors, brought an entire area under the imperium, was the only primarch to remember his past, is able to literally walk straight up to you without you noticing, and he kept the shattered raven guard together after the istvaan dropsite massacre. he then had to resort to speeding up the gene process, but created monstrosities instead. he then delivered the emperor's peace to them personally, exiled himself for a few years in the top room of the ravenspire, before emerging wild-eyed, murmuring "nevermore", and flying into the eye of terror, never being heard from again. Mental. OK, not so great towards the end, but he@s basically the 40k equivalent of a ninja king (the raven guard in general being ninjas)

Ahh, it was Sanguinius for me. That mo'fo' can fly! I mean, he got it all; fancy pants sword, fancy pants wings, fancy pants homeworld (I love the fact that he was so loyal and yet from a planet called Baal!)
Although, the way the Emperor treats him, I wonder if there was a history of sexual abuse there...i mean..he is the pretty boy!

Humility my ASS.
Seriously, in all the fluff I've seen, Guilleman and his chapter act like spoiled brats who want to make rules for everyone to live by, and then piss all over them while shouting SPIRICHUL LEEGE.
I play Chaos, but even I have to admit that Leman Russ is a badass. Plus he created the Space Wolves. Little known fact: Space Wolves don't die, they simply pass out drunk.

Everyone calls Sanguinus the pretty boy, but isn't that supposed to be Fulgrim? Anyway I voted for Fulgrim because he has a pretty tragic story, much like Magnus.
Back to Corax, I do believe he ended up being killed by Fabious Bile (or however the hell you spell it). There was a little bit of fluff about it somewhere.. but it seems Bile experimented on Corax first, like prodding him with a stick while he was in a cave.

Fix'd. Otherwise known as 'fixed'. Ah well, I'm gonna bugger off now (again) and go watch a film that the Government says I shouldn't. Oh well, Cameron is useless so who gives two?
This was a tough one for me...I have no fanatical devotion (I.E army) that fall under any of the primarchs and am a dark eldar at heart. It was a toss up for a lot of them but in the end I chose my boy Lorgrar. Now I read through all the comments and found not one person saying anything nice about Lorgrar. So I shall be the first.
In a universe of war alot of legions turn to religion, faith in the Emperor, Emperor protects, Emperor watches over us, etc. The Word bearers are the strongest worshippers and were the first to worship the Emperor as he should be; a God. Nowadays everyone does that and the word bearers follow the Word. I personally love the idea of the Word and hope one day it is available for purchase so that I too can be enlightened by Lorgrar's word.
I'm not crazy. really. go Lorgrar!
P.S yes I know the bearers were the ones who planted the seeds to start it all and I'm glad they did

This is so wrong that it is... wrong!?!
Corax was NOT killed by Bile.
Corax went on a guilt fueled walkabout into the Eye of Terror and hasn't been seen or heard from since...
Peturabo: I like the idea of a siege-based SM army, and Peturabo is the master of siege warfare. He knows so much about it, his treatises are in the Tactica Imperium (or they were before he became a traitor)
As a result, he's one of my faves.
Leman Russ: He's a SPACE VIKING. Russ represents a Beowulf-style kind of hero, the sort who rips monster's arms off to win a kingdom, and this appeals to me greatly. He also can out-drink the Emperor.
He's spent months fighting a grueling war in which his enemies are demigods allied with daemons, and now he's found himself in the closest thing to Hell he's ever known. This just made my day. Seriously.
But Russ for the win. The man is the most productive raging alcoholic I've ever seen. Razed his brothers entire planet, then pretty much told Rowboat to off with his little book, and his sons accomplish more then alot of other chapters, while remaining the most secluded.

Very close second was Space Genghis Khan. Counter-attacks on the Earth space ports were incredibly important in deciding the battle for the Emperor's Palace. Any White Scars are cool...
magnus the red after reading a thousand sons twice i think he is definatly the best hes very wise, but naive. i guess all the primarchs are pretty naive but none are as wise as magnus.
I liked Magnus for pretty much the same reasons as have already been posted. He got a pretty bum deal. He was just trying to help. That's pretty noble and selfless what got him turned traitor, he didn't want to he was kind of forced into it from what I understand.
Why don't you guys choose Horus???I voted for Horus. Why don't you like him.He was the greatest warmaster of all times. If you read Horus rising and galaxy in flames you will understand that If Horus wasn't wounded by anafem he wouldn't become a heretic.Look at imperium now, it is doomed. It has no leader.

I'll agree that Magnus was trying to help, BUT, the Emperor warned him against sorcery for the very reasons which ended up burning him!
Magnus WAS tricked by Tzeentch.
He bargained with powers he actually did NOT have an understanding of!
Of course, this made more sense before GW/BL changed the fluff from the correct banning of sorcery to the incorrect banning of sorcery and ALL psykers.
Speaking of daemon primarchs, what do they actually do in the warp nowadays? Cause according to the fluff they pretty much never leave their worlds in the warp (last time was the first battle for armageddon.. and we all know how well that went for Angron.. god he was useless - the Imperium did more damage to the people fighting for and living on Armageddon than he did!).
Well now, let's theorize;
Magnus has probably spent 10,000 years reading every single book ever created.
Mortarion is just living on his planet that is completely dedicated to nurgle, and he isn't really doing anything at all.
Angron is probably still sad after getting banished by one lowly grey knight hero. (Also because he was banished for quite awhile..)
Lorgar became more powerful and then went to his room to have a think for thousands of years.
In all seriousness, does anyone know exactly what the daemon primarchs are planning? (If anything?)
You missed Fulgrim. He's probably having a pretty good time partying.
As I understand it, time doesn't really make sense in the warp, so...
@Darkvoid... maybe they are all just planning their next black crusade invasion into the material universe and what may be some months of 'their time' might turn out to be another thousand years of 'our time', like a reverse Narnia where nobody gets old and, instead of coming out ten minutes later, you come out ageless and 1000 years later. That's my guess as to what these guys spend their warped time doing. Yeah Magnus was probably doing a lot of reading, Angron doing a lot of raging about angry, Mortarion lazing around on a couch and rotting, and Fulgrim partying in their off time.
Yeah I missed Fulgrim. But is it really such a terrible mistake? I mean, it is Fulgrim we're talking about, which is strange in itself.
Anyway, time may be messed up in the warp (which it most certainly is), I do believe that anything that goes into the warp from outside it will experience time in a similar manner - they just won't age (physically).. or depending on how the Big Four are feeling, you might turn into an old man. Either way, CSMs from the heresy are still over 10,000 years old - they just don't experience it in the same way. Or something. I dunno. Tell you what, I'll turn renegade, go ask the Dark Gods about it, then go back to Saturn and tell the Inquisition all about my experiences - I'm sure they'll be more than willing to listen to me.. after all, I'd have turned renegade for them.
Rogal Fething Dorn! The man is a legend and will always be remembered as the defender of Terra. If it wasn't for his marines and his knowledge of defences the palace would have fell, but with the blood of his brothers they held the enemy back. The Imperium would be so much better off if they still had Legions instead of chapters. 10,000 marines can do much more than 1,000 marines. Even if Horus wasn't killed by the Emperor, Rogal Dorn would have torn Horus to peices on his ship. DORN FTW!!
