Necromunda - Scavvy Gang - Painting and Modelling Log (Fink - Winged Mutant) @ 2010/08/02 21:42:55

Post by: PDH

This log is hopefully going to keep me on track…but I have a feeling I'll get distracted by other little projects.

Wint and Our Kidd, Nieder, Coleman and Mocco

When Necromunda came out I played as Orlocks and Cawdor. Outlanders came along and Spyrers it was. A few years gap and in 2006 a campaign was going to run, over the winter, in my local GW store… my old Cawdor took a visit to a pot of paint stripper and a quick mail order... I love the Cawdor models but they are a little limited in pose so I had to convert a few to give them some combat gear, but really that is half the fun right?

Forgive the poor pics of these chaps

Anyway they served me well since, winning the 1st campaign and doing reasonably well in the next three. While I still love these chaps they are getting a bit chipped and I fancied a change. (give em a few more years and I imagine they will see the paint stripper again)

So I decided that a bunch of no good Scavvies would be the way to go, after the redemption dabbling Cawdor, but the models are just not up to it. So my plans were put on hold until I came across the baneblade commander’s gas mask head, when my mate Chris gave me the command sprue, and I thought Guardsman Dante from the Inquisitor rule book. A quick trip up to town for some Zombies but I came home with some Ghouls… PDF Trooper Brandhof was born and a way forward for my Scavvies. A quick diversion via =I= 28 (well Brandhof needed to be in someone’s retinue).

Anyway enough of my ramblings I’ve built six of the buggers. Three painted, three in the process of being painted. I’ll take some better pics once I have a something better than my Nokia 6700. Oh and I know the weapons load out is er ‘probably’ not allowed but in my defence I was looking at the front cover of the Outlanders book for inspiration and just assumed. Enjoy.

Comments are welcome

Cheers Peter

edited to add a somewhat better initial picture

These are super cool. the two headed guy - the hunchback with the dirty white lasgun - favourites.
You know your green stuff well. When i was converting they only had pale blue stuff in the shop

Excellent stuff, the scaly with speargun really looks huge compared to the rest. Nice painting too.

Some very nice stuff here, good painting skills. I just finished Lasgun Wedding the novel and I'm now on the hunt for Necromunda threads.

Thanks guys

Well there is more paint on them… in fact the two headed mutant is now finished. Now I’m hoping to get my grubby mints on a reasonable camera at the weekend.

This morning I had a break through. I’ve been thinking about the winged mutant for my gang and Proiteus’s Bringing Back The Rebellion: The Grots Rebuild! Log (lovely squig walkers in there) really helped me out. I’d never considered the plastic grot sprue before.

Anyway popped into GW today and I’ve now got the grots. The big ol PLASTIC grot pistols are perfect for my scavvies. For the winged mutant I want him to be perched on a wall so plastic everything for balance. Will make him taller and an easy target but sod it I’m going for cool.

Weetyskemian44 – never seen pale blue stuff. Was it any good? I find green stuff a bit of a nightmare sometimes but Clay Shapers are the way of the future.

Xanthos – Speargun scally is big…but I think he looks bigger because he is stepping up. Also his spear gun is MASSIVEly cool (The whole reason for using the nobs in the first place)

Abhorsen950 – Never read any of the Necromunda books. Tempted….might have to pop into the local library. If you want to read a good 40k book try Soul Hunter by Arron Dembski-Bowden. I’m going to have to paint a Night Lord after reading that book. All his books are bloody good.

Thanks again for the comments really motivating me.

Peter

Hi Guys

Well I got my hands on a better camera Kodak Easy Share MD1063. Then I had a look on cool mini to see how to take pictures with just one light source and then adjust them in irfanview. I think I need a bit more practice or photoshop.

Anyway my two headed mutant is finished. I’m really happy with how he has turned out, especially how his spine splits at the top for his two heads and his two navels. I feel it is important to have a grounding in reality !

I’ve named him Wint and Our Kidd. Bit of a homage to the homosexual assassins from James Bond – Diamonds are Forever. When I was building this one I really didn’t consider how camp he’d look in his crop top. He also looks a bit sadistic like them too.

Wint and Our Kidd

Group Shot

Seeing the pictures in preview mode they don't look great. They look much better in the gallery.

Cheers

Peter

Another idea that tends to work pretty good is to use an Ork head, but cover the top up with a piece of plasticcard or a Space Marine shoulderpad, making the mutant look blind but armoured at the same time. It has a pretty twisted look to it!

These are coming together great! Creepy and slimy, just like they should be!

I like your color choices, they are more earthy than the colors that people used around Necromunda´s release time.

Little to update really. I started a little modelling on the next two Scavvies. One will be made from a plastic grot (who will be standing on a pile of rubble to make him gangerish height) and the other from the runtherd because I love his belly (think he is going to be my gangs chef…he needs a meat cleaver).

I started painting the Blunderbuss armed Scavvy’s skin the other night and was really unhappy that the barrel wasn’t drilled….I’m now the proud owner of a cheap dremmel substitute from a car boot sale. The barrel has been drilled out as much as possible without damaging the rest of the model.

Malika – I’ve thought about using Ork heads but I feel the Ork jaw is a little too distinctive. I’m thinking of giving my eye stalk mutant armoured bionic eye stalks.

Xanthos– Thanks. Slimy is a good term for these guys. I’ve wanted a gang where I can do whatever I like without feeling guilty; for example eating that captured Juve and not ransoming/selling it back (Mmmm Esher juve tastes good, it’s in the sauce book!) really bad joke

In the last few years I’ve been avoiding bright colours because I think that in the grim darkness of the far flung future only Eldar can get away with prancing about in bright colours. (oh and 2nd edition Blood Angels but I don’t think they prance, that reminds me Space Hulk yet another project to do (having recently gone trawling through Dakka I would love to see Migsula’s finished Space Hulk Terminators but I’m not holding my breath)).

Ferrum – Yeah I know what you mean about the Outlander Scavvies. Having seen the awesomeness that was the Confrontation Scavvies* I really thought the Outlander ones were going to be better… but they turned out to be caricatures of the Blanche artwork.

* for younger enthusiasts Confrontation was the White Dwarf released precursor to Necromunda and here is a Scavvy and Brat Gang member I painted a few years ago for =I= 28.

Haha little update and I’ve written loads again oops

Peter

Aha! Though the ork face is very distinctive of orkishness, if you slap on a hooked nose and a top hat, it makes something all the more characterful. Now to look for the link.

Prove that yours is better.

Ghosty - Seeing that thread I wish Threadomancy wasn't so frowned upon. They look awesome. I take back my comments to Malika, an Ork jaw can be very distinctive buy really can be camouflaged with a top hat and hook nose.

I cannot promise that my Scavvies will be better than Shockwave's but I can promise I won't dissipate when a computer game comes out.

I pledge my Scavvies will be finished, painted and posing for Dakka Dakka at some point in the future (I’ve got an image of Wint posing naked for FHM magazine now and that’s minging )

Monkeytroll - Thanks dude.

Of extra merit is your ability to make them such individuals, while still building a strong group identity.

If only you lived closer, our =I=munda gang would so induct your gang Reminds me that I should upload my whole =I=munda gang to dakka galleries sooner than later.

Looking forwards to more!!

Had such a great day Saturday, went to the Manchester Museum and saw a T Rex . Even at 29 I still felt like a big kid whilst gawping. Anyway on to today….

I’ve run into a little problem with Blunderbuss. The ghoul head I used it is dribbling/drooling, I think it’s meant to be blood. Anyway my problem; what colour do you paint drool? it’s meant to be clear, right. I’ve got far enough to know I’ll give it a gloss varnish afterwards. But I’m stumped on the base colour at the moment.

With Necro I think it is really important to show they are just a bunch of guys not a crack military unit. With the Cawdor it was random coloured trousers from jeans to combats with the red and bone tabards (gang colours) to link them. This time round: the bases all have random mechanicum red machinery/sheet metal and on the Scavvies I’ve been putting Graveyard Earth or Khemri Brown in almost all the other colours.

Migsula – Thank you. As I stated in my Dakka introduction post…

“Back in 95 GW released my favourite game Necromunda, which is the main reason I’ve joined Dakka Dakka. A little google search for Necromunda odds and sods and a few links later my mouth hits the desk as the Jade Vessel appeared in alls its glory. Thanks Migsula, Col Hammer and Northern. A few other beautiful logs later I signed up yesterday. Thanks guys.”

The Jade Vessel was the main reason I joined Dakka, shame I didn’t get to enjoyed it as you were doing it. So after reading your offer I really wish I live closer. Tell you what, next time you run a finale game of =I=munda PM me quite a bit before hand and I’ll send you something cool in the post (I doubt it will be as good as Jakob Rune Nielsen Hive Guardian though, but I’ll give it a bloody good go).

Cheers

Peter

Nothing wrong with gawping at dinos

As to the drool, I'd probably go for a very pale yellow or green.

Damn those are some cool scavvys! i especially like the big ork fella with the ghoulhead, he really does look alot like the guy on the outlandersbook and the speargun you made looks really brutal and the other ones are great to.

I also saw that someone linked to my thread, and i can say that it wasnt because of mw2 that i stopped updating, it was because all my friends that i played with moved so i kinda lost interrest in the hobby, but now im back and since as you say threadomancy is so frowned upon ill be starting a new log for all my various projects including my scavvies =) And i will be keeping a close eye on this thread for some inspiration

This is a really inspirational thread! I've just started working on an out of context scaly (I just had an idea of how to make one so I thought I'd give it a go) but I'm tempted to make a gang and put him into context.

Post by: PDH

Monkeytroll – I like the yellow idea. I’ll mix up the flesh base colour and mix in some yellow. Cheers

Shockwave – The reason I bought and thought of using the Nobs was for the spear gun bionic arm. As for your Scavvies I love the top hat boss and the tentacle mutant. Just sweet. Looking forward to seeing them painted. Just in case I insinuated MK2 was responsible I didn’t mean it. I was commenting on his idea for using Ork heads.
I had the same problem with finding opponents a few years back. This years winter Necro campaign looks a bit dicey too. My local GW now only has one games night per week and apparently GW policy is one games night = just core games (which I can understand).

Jackanory – Build it! Build it! Build it! Paint it! Show us your Scaly! Nice grots in your gallery btw the flamer armed one is my fav (are they for Gorka Morka?).

Post by: jackanory

Hehe cheers! Mostly I just take inspiration from the GW universes and then build models. The idea behind the grots was just any skirmish game really but yeah I guess Gorkamorka would suit them best. I don't really play any of the games since I never have anyone to play with, especially since I moved out to Japan! (originally from Britain too).
The only geeky game I've properly played is DnD, which I'm really missing!

Scazza - Did you enjoy making your Scavvies? Do you like them? If you were to do them again what would you do differently next time?

The most important thing about any hobby is doing it to the best of your ability, trying to improve your skills and learning. For example the Dire Avenger Exarch in your Necro and random stuff log. Brilliant you’re 15 and trying out free hand. I didn’t try it until I was… well a few years ago because I was scared of ruining a model (Empire Great Swords banner was my first time). I’m still not good at it because I don’t practice it enough. The Delaque you have made the green stuff are great and that takes guts even just starting something that complicated.

My painting and modelling ability started to improve the most when I asked for help or when I just practiced and learnt from my mistakes. As the saying goes “Practice makes perfect.” The first model I painted I used enamel paints (GW ape man) looks awful but I learnt not to use enamel paints. The first time I tried dry brushing (it was more like over brushing) on a model (Zombie with a meat cleaver) looked awful but I learnt from it.

Anyway Scazza they are the thoughts that came to mind after reading your comment. Sorry if any of the above comes across as patronising, none of it was meant that way.

Keep on truckin

Peter

Well Blunderbuss is I think finished. Just need to varnish him tonight after work. Probably have some pics up tomorrow.

Monkeytroll – The yellow drool looks good. I liken it to a yellowy chewing tobacco colour. (I love citadel washes). Cheers

Disty - Sounds really interesting. Looking forward to seeing them. The new skaven models are gorgeous. I really want to get my hands on the rat ogre with canisters in its shoulder from the new warhammer boxed game.

Ferrum - you lucky so and so 20 Brats. I've got a couple of others. One in sun glasses which is going to be part of my Rogue Traders Retinue, for possibly an =I=Munda based campaign but I’ll be finishing my Scavvies first.

Jackanory - Shame you don't get to play. I thought a few people in Japan played (I always thought the Tau were a GW marketing ploy for China and Japan). Of course Japan is a big country and I’ve no idea if where you live is close to a GW Japan. Good luck finding a game.

Disappointed, Mac abandoned the rusted, empty silo which he had just checked for anything salvageable. Mac darted silently across the open ground towards an outcrop of dark brown stalagmites. Once in cover he checked the surrounding area again for any signs of hostile life, of which in this part of the underhive was almost everything. Seeing nothing to be afraid of he continued to forage, remaining vigilant to possible dangers.

Mac rested his blunderbuss on the floor, the barrel facing away for him as the old weapons trigger was highly temperamental and he didn’t fancy advertising his presence to anything close by. Leaning in towards the closest stalagmite he took a closer look at the outcrop, growing from of the cracked plasacrete floor. The outer layer looked fresh and shimmered as if it were wet in the dull light of the dome. Mac sniffed the rock but could not discern any odour emanating from it. Pulling off a rat leather glove he reached out and cautiously touched the stalagmite with an outstretched finger. The smooth rock was damp to the touch and to his relief it did not burn his skin. Drawing his dull bladed knife from its sheath he scraped a little of the rock into his hand and raised it towards his mouth. He stuck his tongue out and gingerly licked a tiny shard of rock, spitting the taste away Mac’s twisted face turned into an unsettling grin. Pay dirt quite literally, Mac thought to himself, he had found a large outcrop of igneous adamantorite, a valuable commodity at the trade post. Mac looked up towards the dome roof looking for a leak, the source of this outcrop, but the darkness directly above was not lit by the scattered glow globes hanging from the ceiling many metres above.

Sitting with his back against his discovery, Mac smiled and gazed downwards at his battered old hand me down blunderbuss contemplating a reward. Perhaps Boss Grasbar would give him a better weapon, maybe a shotgun or if he was really lucky an autogun, so he didn’t have to get so close to the enemy, even a stub gun would do.

Deciding that is was best to get back to the gang’s temporary hideout before those, oiled up, Goliaths they had beaten yesterday came back or some denizen of the underhive ate him, Mac reached out and picked up the blunderbuss, then without using his hands he got up into a crouching stance. Checking that the area was still clear he dashed into the open and back behind the silo in the direction of the ruined tunnel they were holed up in. Mac, trying not to skip in his excitement decided he would bring some of the boys back and harvest the crop before selling it to that dodgy guilder Grasber knew…

After naming Wint and Our Kidd after film characters I’ve decided to do this with the rest of the gang. This is Mac named after Gene Hackman’s character from Loose Cannons, who apparently used a blunderbuss (yes I know a tenuous link but it’s stuck now).

Right, now onto Scaly number two. I was looking at him and noticed gaps where the arms meet the body, so I’ve had to put a little green stuff in them. So no painting tonight, hence a short story, while I watched the Great British Bake Off with Abigail (who was mercilessly teasing me about writing a little story about my little models ).

Yay, I’ve got the internet again...phew. I've also got a new computer and new Windows is a bit different than XP. Anyway I digress again.

Monkeytroll – Oh yes the drool looks nice....sorry I mean icky. Cheers

Migsula – I’m very upset to hear Northern is moving to Kyoto because I was hoping for another awesome =I=Munda blog. I wanted to know what was in the vessel and what the Syndicate were going to do with it?

hmmmm Pete in a parcel .... I’d love to go into my local post office, sit on their scales and see how much I cost to post.

Bear – I love the ghoul heads, they have so much character. Shame many of the heads are duplicated on the sprue. The scariest thing about the Ghouls though is the loin cloths...I think they are actually represent pubes!

Rune – Thank you. I’m waiting to see Shockwave’s painted. Now them some cool Scavvies.

Xenon – Thanks. Tell me about it too many projects so little time.... Mordhiem Beastmen, Snake Bite Boss Conversion (which might lead to a Gorka Morka mob), Games Day Space Marine, Death Guard Lord, AOV Dwarf Lord and Berserker, Warhammer Witch Hunter, Space Wolf Dread using FW Ultra Dread, Space Wolf Army (not true scale) and I’d better stop there I’m having palpitations. Wait room for one more... Femme Militia Mary Bones which has to be painted by Christmas 2010 or my sister will never buy me a model as a present ever again.

I’ve got tomorrow off work. So I’m having a modeling morning and then a couple of games of Necromunda, using my Cawdor, in the afternoon. Tomorrow mornings task.... finish my blue tacked interrogator and start putting together the two Scavvies

Thanks for the encouragement

Peter

Ironking - Hey dude. The blunderbuss is actually from the metal scavvy box. In a time long ago when GW let me buy bits from them separately. I bought the last seven plastic boars from GW mail order the same day Ah the sweet memory. Now I use Bits and Kits, what a fantastic place.

Vikingscott - oh yes. I thought they would be a better size than Ork arms.

Hi guys. I've had a brilliant day off work.

I just wasn't in the mood to get out of bed so didn't get as much modeling done as I'd planned. The interrogator went back in his bag. Started on the two Scavvies from yesterdays wip pic. The scavvy based on the grot, background wise I’m thinking originally a male Esher, is on the ruins to make him a little fairer in game terms. I think his head may be a little big but he's pretty much a mutant. I'm really happy how he has turned out. The Chef is coming along nicely and not an Ork head in sight.

I might get some modeling done tomorrow night, when Abi goes to a party. Depends how knackered I am from walking part of the Ribble Way.

My Cawdor did me proud this afternoon, beating some tasty Eshers in a gang fight. The highlight for me was my Heavy Stubber spending two turns of over-watch because he could not see anything. The Esher gang leader thinking it was safe to move round a corner because my heavy still couldn't see her. So in my turn he just walked 3” and shot at her with his Autogun. He might have missed but Martin’s face was a picture (and the heavy is WYSIWYG).

pj-brains – Well Blackpool is just down 25mins on the train from Preston. Paint up a gang (nice like your Ultras ) and then you’ll have to persuade the Mighty Zug to let us have a game at GW Blackpool.

Azekio - Cheers

Peter

Ok. These guys are going to get undercoated tomorrow. The small one will be painted separately to the base. For some reason I don't want to paint the second scaly just yet.

I'm really happy how the fat ones face turned out. I'm hoping painting it will bring out the detail and hide the flaws The fur shrug he's wearing is going to be matted and greasy. I'm considering painting the meat cleaver bloody? Originally I'd built a power maul* for him but it just didn't look right, so he got a stub gun instead.

Peter

* The scavvy would have stolen it from an enforcer... I on the other hand took inspiration from Col Hammer's Eva Kosutic conversion . I'm sure it will appear on a scavvy soon though.

Afternoon chaps, now the ironing, vacuuming and washing up are all done Abi has allowed me to reply (whilst I was taking the picture she just rolled her eyes and told me I'm not funny)

Shockwave, Scrazza and Ghosty - Is this big enough?

Whilst I agree with you all about the size of his meat clever its stuck in place and I doubt it will ever move again (famous last words and all just as the model plummets off a walk way ). Originally I stuck the clever from the Ogre bulls sprue in place but it was way too big. Then I made that fatal hobby mistake and didn't follow the golden rule of less is more. Cut it down to what you see and wish I'm left another mm in place. Never mind I'm still happy enough with it. I've gone for a true scale look

Oh and thanks guys for your comments I thought that meat clever my grandma bought me would never get used.

Seriously though thanks for the comments.

I started painting the bases today. I find if I paint the model first then the bases get rushed (and all that dry brushing is messy)

Commander Cain - Thank you, I'll try.

I wish everyone played Necromunda. One of my mates gave me a load of stick the other day for playing/modelling for a dead game. I told him in no uncertain words that I'd convert him .

Arrrggghhhh bloody GW! The grot based scavvy I started painting has gone back to the modelling stage. There is no detail whatsoever on the models right shin (should be bandages like on the calf) or in the area just about the left wrist at the back of the gun barrel (should be the back of the barrel and top of the forearm). So on the shin I've added some rivets to make it look like an armoured plate. Above the wrist I've green stuffed on some cloth. I hate it when I don't notice things like this until I start painting (I also seem to find a tiny bit of mould line too ).

While I love the ease of working with plastics for converting etc I do prefer metal/resin models for their detail and how the paint goes on. I cannot explain the paint thing but it just seems to flow off the brush better.

Anyway sorry for such a ranty update.

Peter

Woo I've just won the original Nerco bounty hunter with big hair, bolter and bolt pistol

Necro is hardly a dead game. It just seems to come in waves for gaming groups. It's easy to get people started because of the free rules and relatively low start-up cost if you convert everything.

The only problem is that many humans have the attention span of a toddler and very few stick to it.

I almost had a photo update for you this evening. Alas the pictures are just not turning out because the purity seal is not dry enough. I'm going away tomorrow morning and will be back on Saturday night, so hopefully on Sunday I'll be able to update with a semi decent pic of the short guy.

HELP - GW zombies just don't do it for me any more, if only they looked like the ones pulling the corpse cart (minus stakes). So does anyone know of any good Zombie miniatures that wouldn't look out of place next to GW miniatures? At the moment I'm thinking Mantic but unsure of the size since they don't do heroic scale. http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Undead/Zombies/Product/Undead-Zombies-Regiment-30-Figures.html . Hmmmmm If I buy a box of them I might just make that Mordheim undead warband i've been thinking about....

Chibi Bodge-Battle - dude you've come up with another use for that meat clever....you're right I'll need more green stuff too

Chibi and Spacebase - I don't think Necro is dead in the slightest. I find some people look at the slightly more complicated rules as a hindrance, whereas I find that extra level of detail lush. Same reason I love Inquisitor. I also agree that specialist games comes in waves for gaming groups, which for me is a shame.

I wanted to comment yesterday but I was worried about threadromancy )I ndon't really understand the subtleties of the rules on that).
Anyway you've revived it so it's all good!
I actually like the size of the meat cleaver. Sometimes I think that smaller weapons look scarier, like the guy who's wielding it really likes to get in close to the action. I'm planning on modelling one of my guys with a really short "shank" to test the theory .
Keep inspiring me!

The Mantic undead look the part.
Personally I wouldn't worry too much about them not being herioc scale as the Underhive does strange things to sizes.

Have a giany delaque heavy compared to what must be a Esher Juve who is tiny. Not sure what was going on with the sizing.

Hey chaps

Please meet Hervé (the first name of the actor who played Nick Nack from the Man with the Golden Gun)

Quite happy how he has turned out through I think the base over powers him, which was kinda the point.

Now every group of dastardly villains need a nemesis. So with that in mind I got the original Necromunda bounty hunter off ebay (a model I’ve wanted but never bothered getting). Anyway he arrived while I was away. Now I had never seen this model in the flesh, I’ve only ever seen him side on from the back of the source book. Now looking at him side on he looks just like the picture. Looking at him face on he looks really skinny, in fact he looks really skinny and odd along the mould line. I was wondering does anyone own him/seen him in the flesh? Does he look right to you?

Jackanory - I'm positive you can comment on something as long as its not months old.

Chibi Bodge-Battle Cheers, £18 for 30 zombies seems bloody good too. I guess you might shrink a bit if you're a zombie (right i'm off to watch Zombie Land hehe)

Thanks

Played a game called Zombies on Friday night!
I live next to a churchyard and haven't slept since

Herve should have been your hervy.
Hervy?... Heavy...?

ok that was the epitome of lame

Anyways he looks jolly good

There seems to be an inconsistency with the sizes and bulk with some necro figures, or is it just me missing something?
Don't think he looks too bad Peter. Proportionally seems okay so just put it down to lack of victuals in his neck of the Hive. Though he doesn't look beefy enough for close combat, he will be harder to hit in a gunfight!

@ Chibi - Theres a bit of inconsistancy wit size and bulk because a lot of models were released over a long time. I think that bounty hunter was when 'munda was first released. Which was a long time ago, so mini's have progressed alot since then.

@Peter - He does look a bit thin. Maybe a backpack or a slung autogun might make him feel less thin?

Chibi - Thanks oh and if you've got any more awful puns, please share them with us. Also pray tell how you play Zombies the game? (I remember watching a hypnotist called Derren Brown who got this poor guy to play an arcade game where you have a gun shooting zombies etc. Anyway the game put him to sleep though flashing lights whatever. Then the hypnotist gave him a fake gun and took him to a warehouse, that looked just like the location of the game. The bloke woke up as actors dressed as Zombies were shambling towards him. It was comedy and oh so mean!)

Ghosty and Chibi - The bounty hunter comes with a back pack (in the underhive having a bolt pistol and bolter is not enough, you need a chainsword and shotgun strapped to your back too!) but the models proportions just seem a little out. I thought it might be fake . Hopefully I'm just paranoid after reading the how to spot a fake model article and its just a bad cast and really is that thin.

Peter, about the horde of weapons on the Bounty hunter. You may think having 3 guns and a chainsword is bad, but the official loadout for a bounty hunter causes the mind to boggle.

You average run o' the mill guy can have:

Any amount of knives he can lay his grubby mitts on.

Bolt pistol with red dot laser sight

Boltgun/Lasgun

Chainsword

Shotgun with all the trimmings

respirator/filter plugs

Photo visor/contacts.

And then, any one of the following:

Bionic limb
Bio booster
Blindsnake pouch
mesh armour
weapon reload

So, to conclude, that guy is way too thin to carry that much gear, he's probably snap in two from the strain involved. I digress, you say the proportions are a little out. Your right there, but if you look at some other choice mini's from its era you'll find large hands big feet, and a general 'smallness' that is just so unnatural for the hc 28mm scale we're so used to. Im sure it's fine, and if you really do end up feeling you gotta bulk him out, Im gonna eagerly await the converting

Ghosty - lol. In the Community Edition of Necromunda that I'll be using from now on the bounty hunter also has a Hook Rope. http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=265598

No converting on this guy, sometimes its just nice to paint a model as is. Replacing for example the ammo clip that is miscast doesn't count as converting. I might wait until Bits and Kits get some of the new Forge World ye olde Bolters.

Most important order of business Tortured-Robot That sir is not the spirit. Specialist games are not dead they are just ignored by GW. Go grab a couple of friends and some random models and have a couple of games of whatever. Inquisitor is a favourite of mine the detail is just so much fun. All you need for that is what 4 models, play at 28mm scale and you've probably got the models already, just make sure you don't use space marines. In one game, set on Cadia during the 13th black crusade, we used a Khorne Berserker. He took out a squad of guardsman without breaking into a sweat. The funniest part was a guardsman jumping off a walkway to get away from the berserker and breaking his legs. Then the berserker jumping down onto the guardsman's chest and crushing his heart... there was a group wetting of pants at this point. So go play cool games with friends and if you fancy necro play nerco.

weetyskemian 44 and Ghosty - These are the bad boys I want to get my hands on. http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/New_Stuff/SPACE-MARINE-BOLTER-PACK-UMBRA-PATTERN.html. I really wished that forge world would do a kit with say three of each bolter type they have released rather than having to get 10 of same. Oh well wishful thinking.

Oh Chibi I think you went back a bit far... I always thought that a ye olde bolter was a grenade launcher

Herve is fantastic - you've managed to make him look really sneaky, which is tough for a GW model!

I don't know if this is still useful, but I dug out my version of the same bounty hunter model and took a photo from a similar angle. And in unflattering extreme close-up, no less! Only the torso and head section is original, but hopefully it can give you a comparison?

Not much to update this week. I've not touched a paint brush due to work being hectic, thus being knackered when I get home. Yesterday was meant to be a painting day but turned in to a hangover day (I blame a cocktail served in a tea pot). I've been reading the Enforcer omnibus. Finished Crossfire and its one of the best 40k novels I've read because it’s not all gun fights and heroics. Half of it comes across as treatise of the oddness and bickering within imperial culture. I now want to build a female model for my 5 man Arbite squad (I’d also like some riot shields and shock mauls but getting ones hands on Arbite models is difficult).

These guys were painted a while ago black/blue armour, gentle highlight, purity seal, watered down ‘Ardcoat. I didn’t like the sergeant’s helmet so I replaced it and then turned his helmet into a familiar. (I really need to work out how to get pics to look good in thread)

Scarper - Thanks. Herve was an unplanned but happy accident because I'd bought the grot box for the guns (The runt herd conversion is the same). The base was just to make him a bit fairer in game but it really adds to him. It looks like he is stalking. My plan with the blunderbuss guys is to get them up close using a zombie wall and then shoot anything when they get within 6".
As for the bounty hunter thanks again Scarper. Now I am convinced mine is a really bad cast. My chaps face is so much thinner than yours. So much for not converting him... I plan to cut his head off and replace it with a FW Cadian veterans. I’ll also replace the whole miscast bolter for an umbra pattern bolter.

weetyskemian44 - I got two of each FW type from bits and kits. These bolters are massive, especially the Phobos pattern which is also wide. They are so nice.... now I have all the parts I guess I should get on with my one off True Scale Iron Warrior.

I was going to update tomorrow but I've just got home from a local indie gig. It was pretty y, so I needed to listen to some decent music to end the evening (I've chosen Tool in case anyone's interested). Anyway....

This is my gangs chef. I reckon every Scavvy gang needs a chief and a chef. Mmmmm tasty succulent juve in the pot (though its more profitable to get ones meat clever on a heavy)

Helpmann - The Juve Catcher.

I'm happy how he has turned out. I think the meat clever works now I've cut down the handle. I tired Grey Deaths chaos lord recipe of Chainmail and dev mud on the clever. It didn't quite work so many layers of dev, chaos black wash later I'm super happy with it. I'm not sure you can see it in the pics but this guy is bald with stubble round the sides and back. As for my first attempt at sculpting a face.....I'm not sure but it was bloody hard to paint. Comments and pointers welcome.

While I've got a few ideas knocking about for my next 3 gang members (chief, winged mutant and a wyrd) I need a bit of a break from grubby Scavvies. So its onto the bounty hunter and my inquisitor's acolyte.

I'm in no rush to finish this gang now, I cannot see a campaign being run this year winter . But on the bright side we are planning a few games of =I= 28, I'm sure a few of these guys will take a part.

Take it easy

Peter

Cheers guys.

Chibi - Hows this for reasoning? Michelin Inspectors must eat a shed load of really tasty food. So by that rational I bet scavvies rate them pretty high on the menu, good crackling!?

Monkeytroll - No hardship on the gaming front, I prefer lumps of plastic on the painting/modelling table than the gaming table anyway. Next weekend I may actually try for a game of 40k. It must have been a few months and I have to admit I'm itching (no pun intended) to get my Death Guard out.

weetyskemian44 Gorden Ramsey! Actually I can imagine Helpmann using that kinda language

Now today has been a bit of a washout with the weather... instead of a cricket pitch behind my place I've now got a lake (I wish I was exaggerating). Though Abi and I did have a good day staying in... Quantum of Solace and Zombie Land . Surprise surprise this got me thinking about zombies. So another look for Mantic Zombies I found a video of them, that even has one standing next to a Space Marine http://www.beastsofwar.com/kings-of-war/kings-war-zombies/. I'll be ordering a box...when I've finished a few more of the gang. So I got working on the scavvies again....in fact a special scavvy that has a whiff of blood and sea about him....

madmartykmf - Its the 30 pack I'm planning on getting too. I have to say I approve of Mantic's pricing, model count per box and the idea. Though I'm not a massive fan of their miniatures, on the whole. I was sent a Mantic elf sprue with something I ordered and the two elves were darn horrible. If GW had some nice zombie models (as I said before like the corpse cart ones) I would be buying them straight away without even considering Mantic. Fortunately Mantics undead range do look ok and the Zombies are nice (I think I'll have one holding a lasgun,as a club, instead of holding his mates arm).

On the bright side when I get the Zombies at least I'll be able to start my Undead Mordheim warband. Which will be including some of these too http://www.heresyminiatures.com/hv020.htm" target="_new" rel="nofollow"> http://www.heresyminiatures.com/hv020.htm and for when I roll "the lads got talent" http://www.heresyminiatures.com/hv024.htm.

Hi guys

I didn't get much done this week but I'm really happy with this simple conversion, based on the Skaven pack master from The Island of Blood (shoddy name GW ) starters set. I find its the little details that make a model for me. In this case it was removing the warp stone and replacing it with a battery pack. The idea for this model came about because if I were a Scavvy charged with goading the zombies forward I wouldn't want to touch them. So I'd get my hands on an Acme Zombie Prod. Buy now and it comes with an exclusive sheet metal pinny.

Xenon - Cheers. Well don't hold your breath on the the Zombie front. They will be a November, at the earliest, purchase.

Jackanory - Looking forward to seeing a painted Gonk. I hope you have fun with your buddies first though. When I was 10 I asked my Dad, who was an art teacher, how to dry brush. To show me how he took a Zombie and painted the skin fire dragon crimson. Then took straight bleached bone and dry brushed it (I might still have it, if I can find it tomorrow I'll post a picture). It was then I decided I wanted to do a better job because it looked pretty bad. So practice, effort and about 19 years of wanting to do a better job... keeps on improving my skills. The other thing that helped me was getting advice from a couple of GD winners and anyone who had a nice technique or finish I liked (Ilfana's ace Raven Guard Captains skin is a prime example). I also have a note book to write down my paint recipes, so I replicate a colour.

monkeytroll - well it is an Acme Zombie Prod with sheet metal pinny and we all know how good their products were for Wile E. Coyote!

Scarper - When the rumours first started Isle of Blood sounded ok. But Blood Island just sounds dumbed down to me.

As for the bionic eye ta dah. Really easy but looks good.....

Most importantly you must mix the gs properly (cut out the bit where the blue and yellow meet) and leave it to cure for about 20 - 30 mins.

1. To make the base of the implant. Take one small ball of green stuff and put it in the eye socket. Flatten it into the socket at the front and then kinda do the same from the side, getting a nice crisp corner. When you are happy with the shape leave it to dry properly.

2. To make the lense. Take a tiny, and I mean tiny, amount of green stuff and roll it into a ball (I find a clean wet painting tile perfect for rolling green stuff) then I gently finishing off with my thumb and forefinger. Place the ball in the centre of the implant area and I use a clay shaper (number 0, extra firm, taper point) to poke into the middle of the ball to make the lense.

3. I like to add a little gs wire to the back of the head because all the great 40k GW artworks have loads of wires poking out the back of peoples heads.

Hope that helps. Now I am off to bed. (I'm tired again so hope it makes sense)

Peter

Hope you don't mind me jumping in here Peter but an alternative way of doing the lenses that I find to be pretty effective is to use pins with flat, dome heads. You can drill into the model a bit and then cut the pin down so that there's only a little bit of the shaft left. Once you've pushed it into the hole you drilled, the head of the pin is what makes the lens. It's how I did the goggles on my rebel goblins. With more "human" models you might need to find smaller pin heads as they suit the cartoony look I used on my grotz less.

Jackanory not a problem at all. You should have stuck a picture up too, so I hope you don't mind that I have.

For those who haven't seen, this is Jackanory's flamer grot, that I think is just beautiful. With aforementioned goggles and lenses (and wicked little grot mask).

I DID NOT MAKE THIS MODEL JACKANORY DID

I might give it a try next time I build a flamer armed model. Jack what is the red plastic from?

Ah cool, not at all! Thanks for the promo I don't really like posting pictures on other peoples' blogs without permission but I'm glad people like him.
The red plastic, I think, was the cartridge from a ballpoint pen. I think it was one of the really small pens you get in betting shops (though I don't really ever go inside those places). I can't really remember where I got it from 100% though.
I really want to put some shots of them painted but they're a bit far away at the moment I'm going home at Christmas, think I'm going to bring them back with me when I return.

Jackanory's flamer rocks!

As for the Zombie Packmaster, he's definitely ace! I had noticed something wasn't exactly like the IoB arms, and I hadn't found until you mentioned the wyrdstone / battery swap! So great!

I do have a question though... What did you use as a tabard on him? Looks like a piece of armour, ou a small tank track...

Jackanory - Phew.... Almost Christmas...... Fly to England..... Celebrate Christmas..... Find Rebel Grots..... (Celebrate New Year?).... Fly to Japan......Paint.........Yay!
(Ah yeah I hadn't thought of it like that. I've put your name in capitals underneath him now. )

Ruzto - Cheers

Yggdrasil - Thank you. The Zombie Packmaster's metal pinny is a groin guard from the Ork Nobs sprue.

Now moving away from Scavvies for a moment....I have a super idea for a Necromunda character using one of the new models from the Dark Eldar range....though I'm not telling you guys what yet because I need to see the model in the flesh first.
(I will not start a new army, I will not start a new army, I WILL NOT START A NEW ARMY but I might paint a few wyches)

Thanks guys

Hmmmm not checking ones own thread because one is needing a break from scavvies Doh!

Scarper - No worries. Well after painting my Snakebite Nob I will finish the 2nd scaly and the zombie prodder (hmmm that sounds rude). Then I will breath and built two mutants (wings and eye stalks).

Jackanory - LOL. I can understand the confusion. I have the only two nice models from the original Dark Eldar range: Urien Rakarth and Dark Eldar Haemonculus with Destructor. I bought them last month after reading Dark Eldar rumours (best get them just in case GW stop selling them). Now the new models I assume will be great and l will probably will never paint my two.
Have your mates left yet.... Gonk is calling you

tcraigen - Thank you

Migs - I will get you a group pic when... I have painted the 2nd scaly and prodder..... and when you've painted a half a squad of Raging Bulldons (this part is open for debate ). I'll keep you motivated (in the style of a bond villain)

And a quick phone pic of the scaly's rear. I'm hoping the jeans and t shirt will fit better once they have been dirtied up and he has some skin colour.

Thanks for the kind words and comments they are keeping me on track (via a slight orky detour)

Cheers

Peter

Hopefully I'll get some good progress on her done tonight then I can get back to putting the finishing touches on him (he's going to need a hell of a lot of c&c).

Hi guys,

A little Necromunda update using phone camera. Now madmartykmf's http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/259854.page really nice terrain blog has inspired me. I've decided that a painted gang need painted terrain to play over. So since I've had the bulkheads undercoated for years and over the last few nights the thought of detail painting has made me shudder.... so I started on some terrain... I've painted more bulkheads in the red style (now have 18 painted) like the scavvies bases (I really like the colour and en mass they look great).

This colour scheme almost matches up with some old cities of death terrain I was "given" out of a bin by my local GW. It was their intro board 4'x1.5' with all the buildings glued down. They were instructed to get rid of it when the realm of battle battle boards were released. Right place right time . I removed most of the buildings which are all one level box shaped. Then cut the board down to about 4'x12" so the built on cliff face with mechanicum complex entrance are still in one piece, which makes a great defensive position in 40k.

These three are a test run of a different colour scheme and still WIP. Black Undercoat, Scorched Brown Base, Boltgun Metail dry brush then Mig rust and light rust stippled on. Second time I've used MIG pigments (and the first time was on half a cog on my Ork Nobs base) and I'm quite happy with the way they have turned out, so far. I need to seal them now. Then I need to dirty it up a bit like the red ones....using greasy smears at the top to tie the two styles together.

Any comments, criticisms with helpful suggestion are more than welcome.

By the way does anyone know if MIG pigments will wash out of my favourite jeans?

Peter

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok I think they are done? Pic 1 as above, Pic 2 sealed and pci three some greasy weathering.

Nice and easy and quick to do....and another three to be done this weekend.

Right a productive morning now lunch with my sister and then a beer festival with Martin. Then maybe depending how much beer we drink some Necromunda.

Peter

Can't believe you're such a tease with the scaly - Rear shots? Pfft

How do you seal your terrain, btw? I'm always worried any sprays will just dissolve the powder or blow it off... (Horrible, horrible experience in the past. So many hours... *shudder*) It's awesome that you can get such a nice effect with a fairly simple technique - was it hard to do?

That's enough questions for a while, I reckon Keep it up!

Just got back from a nice walk in the countryside - fresh air blowing out the cobwebs and find some unexpected replies

Scarper - LOL. That really wasn't the intention of the rear shot...I was showing off his designer denims. I'm about to start painting his skin in about.....er after a nice cuppa tea (I've also bribed Abigail with a copy of The Times to keep her quiet).

--How do you seal your terrain, btw?
- I used purity seal* from a great height. Even that blew some of the powder off but it did dull it down and keep most of it in place. I then went back over it will an old and reasonably stiff small dry brush to blend down any clumps (ladder rungs). (I'm probably going to invest in some artists spirits and give them a go at some point)

-- It's awesome that you can get such a nice effect with a fairly simple technique - was it hard to do?
- Not really, thats the best thing about both styles. Here is a run through of both styles....

The red ones are Black Undercoat, Mechrite and Scab red base. Badass Black wash. Dev Mud wash. Dry brush with Scab. Dry Brush with Scab and Blood red. Get an old blister sponge and dip in boltgun metal, wipe most of it off and rub and dab areas as appropriate. Then do the same with black paint but just dab it on lightly (can't really see it in the pic).

The rusty ones are Black Undercoat, Scorched Brown Base, Boltgun Metal dry brush then Mig rust and light rust stippled onto the lowest recesses and lightly brushed over the other areas (this process was mainly dry but a tiny amount of saliva on the brush occasionally helped it stick). Seal with purity seal. Get an old blister sponge and dip in boltgun metal, wipe most of it off and rub and dab areas as appropriate.

Then the final stage, which is the same on both styles. Vallejo model colour Smoke, which is really thick. Water it down and then with a really old and splayed medium flat dry brush I wiped it down from the top to look like greasy run off/streaks. Then in certain areas I got a blob of Smoke then drowned it with water and use gravity to let it run down to the bottom. (pic three left hand bulkhead shows this off best)

I hope that makes sense

Commander Cain - Thanks. No unfortunately you cannot buy it any more. Fortunately I've had this lot since 1995

madmartykmf - Well credits due where credits due. Weathering powders are fun.... At the moment it really is the case of give it a go and if it goes wrong wash it off and start again. The platformers are pretty nice. At the moment I think I'll finish what I've got (you know why )

Scazza - Thank you sir.

* GW purity seal. I've used it for years and only once has it ever misted up.

Cheers guys

Peter

I got more painting done this week than I expected.

This guy has been an absolute nightmare since undercoating him. Axe handle was too long...snipped in the middle put back together. Arm joins with massive gaps needed green stuffing. Mould lines galore....I really don't know how I missed them Massive speargun getting in the way of painting. Axe and shotgun getting in the way of painting. Anyway I think I have rushed him a little but he was driving me mad! Oh and he really is not that green irl but that is the best I can do.

Monx Gaskgoomba

Now I think phase one of my scavvy project is complete. All the original models are painted. I will try and get some better shots at the weekend in natural light, including a group shot. Phase two and phase three will be started after I've painted Mary Bones from the Femme Militia range and finished the Snakebite Nob.

Peter

Edit - He now has a surname. A guy on Eastern fringes called Gask pointed out that my scaly looks a bit like a Goombas http://www.gamesetwatch.com/mariomovie9.jpg. Ace

The hassel continues.....I've just looked at the pic again and I've not finished him aaarrrrrrgggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've not painted scratches on the rusty metal plate at the front of the speargun lol

monkeytroll - I'm going to a gig tonight so a group shot will be taken on Saturday between recovery and going to the aquatics centre for some more tropical fishes*. So pics will be up at some point this weekend.

neil101 - Go forth and play Nercomunda....over your manufactorium. Really cheap game to get started on. The rules are free, use these ones at the bottom of the page http://www.anthony-case.me.uk/necromunda.php. I wish I still had the rules for Confrontation, I went through a phase of I wont be needing these 12 plus year old white dwarves.... I'll bin them ooooooooo girls. [hangs head in shame].

Thanks to everyone who has commented (and to those lurking) in phase one. This whole experience of posting stuff on the interweb has become a real pleasure. I'm really glad I found Dakka you guys are brilliant.

* Abigail chose the last lot, this time its my turn. The fish in our tank at the moment are The Sparkling Gourami, it is also known as the Purring Gourami, the Dwarf Croaking Gourami and Green Croaking Gourami, since it can produce a distinct croaking sound. monkeytroll and weetyskemian44 - Now to end the debate on my mental state and whose fault it is. Now I cannot really blame the fish....they are only doing what comes naturally to them. So I shall have to lay blame elsewhere. Since Abigail chose the fish I shall blame her....ah sweet logic . We are now the proud owners of some cardinal tetras. I am also the proud owner of a nice bruise on my left arm from when I shared my logic with Abigail.

The old white dwarves – I'm still hanging my head in shame. I now know it was wrong and live with the regret everyday. I am still allowed to throw away new white dwarves as they have no real content, right? You can look at the pictures on the GW shopping site anyway.

neil101 – Excellent

Now onto the main attraction a group shot of phase one. The Maggot Eating Cheese Farmers (I think I need to work on the name)

From left to right: Mac, Monx Gaskgoomba, Helpmann - The Juve Catcher, Coleman, S. Mocco, Wint and Our Kidd, Nieder and Hervé

And a few of them having a wander round the underhive

Vitruvian XVII, monkeytroll - While I do own that piece of terrain I cannot claim any credit for it (other than a few repairs). It was part of the intro table I was talking about a page or so ago. I'm having a game of 40k later (first game I'll have played for a few months I'm not sure whether to use my death guard or eldar) I'll take a shot of it in all its splendour for you then.

monkeytroll - you're right....my dark neurosis.... I have umbiliphilia

Scrazza - Thanks buddy

Chibi Bodge-Battle - Cheers. I've just tried and they really don't taste sweet or tasty. Yuck foundation paints.....spit spit spit

Scarper - Cheers.

neil101 - Thank you. LOL no I left education with a degree (in Park and Landscape management of all things)....I completed that four years ago and the thought of going through formal education again makes me shudder. Thanks for the offer of Confrontation....though I think it might be more appropriate via PM rather than posting here.

Sorry again PDH (I deleted too much including the comments about how much I loved your work!) Neil101 and I are firm friends now

First of all; I really like your gang members they are excellent and will continue following this thread avidly.

Now.........If there is anyone out there who wishes to join me in my obsession for confrontation but needs some pointers.....ta da.......

* Issue 130 October 1990: Page 10 Necromunda: background covering the setting with a fantastic pic by Rolf Mohr of the Palatine Spire. (This issue also contains the excellent card based combat system called Chivalry).

* Issue 131 November 1990: Page 64 Gangs: a small but fantastic article describing the main protagonists of Confrontation all illustrated with classic John Blanche sketches.

* Issue 132 December 1990: Page 23 Gang creation: rules for creating a gang leader (you) and their gang and stash.

* Issue 137 May 1991: Page 58 Combat rules part 1: rules covering combat, characters, coherency, turns, actions and firing. Following this from Page 75 are the all important Trading rules.

* Issue 138 June 1991: Page 59 Combat rules part 2: final part of the rules covering hand to hand, hit location, damage and survival.

* Issue 142 October 1991: Page 60 Weapon Stats: All the weapon stats you'll ever need (though be prepared for some mental juggling as they were not published in the correct page order).

So that's about it. Now I realise that I have just listed off six issues of White Dwarf that are 17 to 18 years old but you can find them if you look in the right places......your best bet is the wonder that is eBay.

If not PM me and I'll try and help. I warn you though the rules aren't complete and not even in the correct page order in the white dwarfs.........oh and I hope you like lots of basic maths.......

keep it up PDH.

The Death Guard came out to play on Sunday. They were Surprise Assaulted by Red Space Marines*. I won due to the victory conditions but only had 1 plague marine and a rhino left at the end...I think the Red marines should have won they had a whole tactical squad alive! Stupid kill points HQ worth 3, Troops and dedicated transport worth 1 and every thing else worth 2. Now plague marines are troops but they really are elite! Anyway stupid kill points.

But anyway. A picture of the terrain the scavvies were posing on

I like to think of it as an underground Mechanicum facility....or an abandoned one at the bottom of Hive Primus.

Dances with Squats - Thank you for the kind words. I am already itching to get phase two started...but that has to wait for a couple of other models. Cheers for the fantastic information....I now know exactly which White Dwarves I binned I've had a look at the rules and I don't think I'll bother using them (though I did enjoy the couple of games I had in the early 90's)...I'll stick with Inquisitor.

My mum is great she went to a jumble sale and came home with a box of white dwarves for me in I think 1991ish. May they RIP.

fasterthanlight - Now that is a compliment. I shall make sure phase two starts with a bang!

Peter

* Red Space Marines is what you get when you leave your Blood Angel codex somewhere.

Sods law. I pop into my local GW on my way home from work and impulse purchase Imperial Armour Model Masterclass (its very pretty). I get home to find a parcel from GW with....

The Wild Warg... I'm a little disappointed. When I ordered them I realised that I'd get six plastic models, what I didn't know then was there are just two different types. So my four scavvy dogs made of these may look quite Déjà vuy ... oh hang on I've got a saw, green stuff, plastic rod, guitar wire and wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mange I'm looking forward to starting these mangy mutts!

As for other updates....I've been slack and done very little modelling or painting over the last few of weeks. I've starting building some more terrain...walkways and some storage tanks. Now I need to know will PVA glue stick thin cardboard to metal and or plasticard? If not does anyone have any suggestions?

My Dark Eldar Codex also arrived but I'm saving that for Sunday evening in the bath. I think it'll be a nice treat after bivouacking on top of a mountain, in the lake district, on Saturday night in November (oh the things I do for fun!!! ).

Yggdrasil - lol

It depends on if the pieces will see a lot of abuse, meaning is the area exposed to people touching it or load bearing? If either are the case you should use super glue or liquid nails. In my experience PVA is good for holding something in place that is either light like flocking or holding down the basing material until it is painted. To answer your question yes PVA will hold to pretty much anything, but in my opinion not that well. My vote is to nix the PVA!

Can't wait to see more of your terrain.

madmartykmf - Thank you. The exact advice I needed. I shall go get myself a bucket of thin superglue. I doubt they parts will get touched that much but probably more than I expect and fixing terrain is a bugger. The other bugger of the terrrain I'm building is how many rivets I think they will need...

Mordoskul - Thank you. That's the spirit, I like the fact you said

I guess Phase Two has started....though its going slowly. In fact all hobby activity, apart from reading, has been going very slowly for the last month or so. I think I am suffering from SAD . Dark when i get up, pretty much dark when I get to work and pitch black when I leave work (stupid winter)!

Maybe posting a very WIP shot may improve my lethargicness. This chap is going to be my dog handler....I decided since my gang have a Zombie prodder they would need a dog handler too. I need to get my hands on a Dark Eldar agoniser as the metal whip that comes with the base model (Squeak Gnawtooth) is just too heavy and would break off with his first down result.

So what do you guys think of the two remaining rats on his shoulder...stay or go?

Grim Bad'Un - Thanks. I've got a game this afternoon. My cawdor were doing well until the last game, where two of my gangers died (It was the hoard scenario in pitch black three gangers took on his whole gang pretty much for the first 4 turns doing so well....then combat and two were killed by the same chick). So today is damage limitation...make some money and run away.

Right I am off out....day light

Peter

ps for anyone who asked questions in my gallery I am sorry I wasn't being rude just a little ignorant to their existence. I shall go through it and reply asap.

A little wordy update today. I've done a bit GS work on the dog handler every night this week, even if its been as little as 10 to 15 minutes. Happliy this is making me feel somewhat less SAD. I decided to keep the last two rats on his shoulders (though I've had to re sculpt the snout on the one near his ear, after a little accident with the barrel of the dremmel filing it flat )

I've also decided that I'm going to use the metal whip that came with the model, with some adjustments to make it lighter and 40kified (I really cannot justify buying a box of Dark Eldar at the moment for one part).

I'll hopefully have finished modelling him at the weekend and I'll start painting him next week

Fasterthanlight and nathanie1 - Thanks for the encouragement.

Ok I think he is ready for an undercoat now.

Looking at the pics I have to say that the GS looks a little rough in places but I'm hoping not to notice once its painted.

Talk about 28mm heroic scale...the stub gun (or whatever grots use) looks enormous, but I like it. Do I need to increase the size of the hole in the barrel?

The giant pet rat will give you an idea as to the route I'm going with the scavvy dogs . Its 40k of course random vermin would get bionics! Another way I like to look at it is the animals are test runs for some crazy doc.

I can't see which bit of GS you reckon is rough - it all looks ace to me! I think it might be a little bit easier to see all the metal detail if you could get a shot of him when he's primed though

weetyskemian44 - Thanks. I'm looking forward to seeing him painted too. Mainly because I've never painted a whip before, never mind an electro whip!

Scrazza - Cheers

Commander Cain - Thanks

Chibi Bodge-Battle - lol, thats a good point. Ha ha I like the idea of having a really powerful gun that can only hold one shell. Hmmm I now fancy playing a bit of Inquisitor. I decided to keep the rats, especially the one near his ear...it talks to him or at least that's what he thinks.

Scarper - Oh the GS... I was fishing for compliments. No I'm kidding. Well actually not exactly since I think that is pretty much the whole point of having a painting and modelling blog? On a less existential note I was referring to the robe just above the patch near his right arm. I think it could just be the contrast between the gs and metal that was bugging me. As for my bits box it... I think it’s time you meet her... gratuitous bits box shot

Now Scarper I'm in (a small amount of) bother because of you and I don't even have a picture to show for it. Let me set the scene... its minus 4oC in Preston and the kitchen was nice and warm from dinner. For some reason, and for the life of me I cannot work out why, Abigail really didn't appreciate me using the kitchen to undercoat the model. Her main issue was the smell, not the paint because I might be stupid but not that stupid. Anyway next time I'll just have to wait until she is out...like I normally would, when I do smelly things (modelling related or otherwise) in the flat. The dog handler is even more un-photogenic primed. lol. Looks like you'll have to wait for the finished product.

monkeytroll - Cyber creatures are a very important part of the background...even for scavvies. Thanks for your advice btw on using guitar wire (though i really couldn't wait until the model was painted before sticking it in place) and your blog in general for cyber ideas.

neil101 - I'm really happy with the battery...it looks the part. The flick switch just makes it for me. I cannot rate the Ork Nobs box enough its heavy and crammed with loads of random odds and sods

Thanks again guys your comments have really given me the motivation to get back into it.

Well I can say out of my own experience that it's not good to prime your models inside. Before I primed all my models in a box in one of the rooms in my cellar. But after quite some time, I discovered a mysterious black powder or dust covering everything in the entire room. When I touch anything in the room my hand is covered in it and it's pretty nasty. So if you don't want your whole flat covered in primer dust then prime your models outside.

Necromunda - Scavvy Gang - Painting and Modelling Log (Fink - Winged Mutant) @ 2010/11/28 08:35:02

Post by: weetyskemian44

surely that only counts if you prime in black - it you prime in white don't you get white dust? (which aint so bad)

Necromunda - Scavvy Gang - Painting and Modelling Log (Fink - Winged Mutant) @ 2010/11/28 08:55:10

Post by: PDH

Well to end any debate that may start on the colour of the primer, on this occasion I primed black. (in fact all scavvy occasions will be black....I only use white on one off models).

Now to reassure readers that the black dust is not an issue at the moment
I might be stupid but not that stupid
I used a whole newspaper, last weekends Sunday Times*, I sprayed near the window and had the extractor fan on (though this really didn't beat the smell as I hoped it would lol).

Peter

*Now for those who have never read or seen the Sunday Times: it is one of those papers that is so big and heavy it would be useful to own a fork lift truck to carry it home from the shops.....talking of which its time for my weekly workout since I don't own a fork lift.

Since I won't be online tomorrow - Merry Christmas.

Abi went to see her parents yesterday so I got to spend all evening painting and modelling uninterrupted. Decided it was only right and sensible to complete the dog handler before I start to paint the Dark Eldar and a Tear Bringer Librarian for the The Huge Space Marine Chapter Conclave - Dakka Group Project http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/333851.page.

Dog Handler Fleck (with Bernard and Bianca on his shoulders and Cyber Rat Reepicheep at his feet)

(named after Eugene Levy's character from the film Best in Show)

  • edit from the future, ok page 7, monkeytroll won the little rat naming with Bernard and Bianca (and she really does have a sexy voice)

  • and a further edit weetyskemian44 won the name of the cyber rat (Eddie Izzard is a very funny man)

  • Thanks guys

  • Anyway that's me done I'm watching Jingle All The Way. Take it easy.

neil101 - Thanks Neil. Merry Boxing Day...Ah Top Gear silliness, Christmas present German beer and Dakka Dakka . I am really happy with the stubble, the dry brush was slightly damp from previous usage and turned out the better for it.

jackanory - Nice little Union Flag you have going on at the moment. Hope you had a good journey. For some reason a F**k Yeah is my favourite compliment so far. The rats were part of Gnawtooth but the placement of the ghoul head couldn't have been better or luckier. I've got a little story brewing involving the rats, Fleck and a couple of disused oil drums.

Scarper - Cheers. The checks are good but time consuming. I decided that I should do some in homage to some of the old scavvy artwork. The rats skins started out as Chardonite Granite with added Tallarn Flesh or Khemri Brown. The bit of GS I didn't like was fine once the paint went on. I was looking at it too hard I think. Clay Shapers for the Win! I wish I'd made the checked rag a little more ragged towards the thin end at the GS stage.

monkeytroll - Rather spiffing if I say so myself

Mordheimer - as in The Mordheimer website Mordheimer? If so wicked site but please make it work with Opera I'm thinking a Beastman Warband is needed as some point...I just love the new Ungors. Thanks for the COMPLIMENT I've never looked at the Death Squad rules...is it like 2nd Ed? Cheers

slann - Thank you. I will try.

Lord Kaesar II - Two left feet, I've no idea I've never danced with him Looking at the model though he does not have two left feet. Hmmm didn't think of that connection with the name... I feel I should bung him in paint stripper and start again but alas my gang can only have limited mutants!

Cheers everyone for the comments and views

Earthbeard - Thank you. The rats worked out well, I really should come up with names for them too. I'm glad I got rid of the third one though, I think in this case less is more.

The Good Green - Thanking you. Yeah it did turn out well... I think the wip picture makes it look bad since its such a contrast between gs and metal.

monkeytroll - Since you're the only person to chip in with names.... Bernard and Bianca win the little rat naming contest, you sir are a genius, I loved those Disney mice. I will edit Fleck's post to advise other of their names. As for the big one Splinter is too obvious and Algeron just doesn't do it for me. So Cyber rat still up for naming.

Earthbeard - Thanks but its not quite right. I am going for movie/tv theme for the names for the gang...hence Bernard and Bianca worked they are two mice from the Rescuers, that can talk.....mice are almost rats.....Fleck thinks the rats talk to him....hence it works. Sorry I'm a picky arse. Thanks anyway. But feel free to have another go.

Sageheart - Well it will be a scavvy themed Wyrd. I'm planning on using the blind champion head from the ghouls sprue and working down from there. The home brew rules I'm planning on using, which are a combination of GW's, Outlanders, Anthony Case's and bits and bobs from over on the eastern fringes, have 20 mutations and Wyrd is one of them (the mutant gets a roll on the minor powers table from Outlanders). I should probably post the rules in here at some point. But the reason he falls into phase two is because I can also use him as a hired gun when using the monstrously bad official scavvy rules.

delrohir - Thank you. I am getting the hang of my new camera....though I cannot get a good one of a Nurlge Champion I've painted. Oh well...shrugs

Well, thought I'd throw some of the obvious ones out first Although my stock is limited, all I have left is Mr Jingles and Roquefort (and I had to look up roquefort, poor).

weetyskemian44 - I lied to everyone about names in a hat....this one just had to win. Perfect....an Eddie Izzard (or Simon Pegg, depending on the film) voiced character....bob on Previous post edited

Lord Kaesar II - This one made me laugh....I was tempted but really couldn't face naming him after a fast food chain (which could be good I've never been).

monkeytroll - No worries about looking it up....I've had to do that on a number of occasions. Mr Jingles.....I don't want to cry every time I look at the model

Thanks guys I've enjoyed your help naming rodents.

Well I have finally finished something in 2011!!!! Unfortunately nothing particularly interesting and this really is a poor update.

I have completed six more of the rusty bulkheads as seen on page 4. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/90/309038.page

Which means I have 7 still unpainted (1 red/6 rusty) so nearly done....so far its only taken... what 16 years!

Ok productive morning. I've been struggling with railings for my Necromunda walkways for ages. This morning I found these at my local railway model shop....I'm not sure what they are but they work well for my hard cover needs. I cut them up to make them go further.

I'm unsure what colour I'll be painting them...probably red and rusty to match the bulk heads.

Hey Neil. I got the double tread plasticard sheeting from Antenocitis Workshop, when Space Hulk came out and never used it (or Space Hulk for that matter ).

Do you reckon I should paint the black parts at the ends in warning stripes.

Great walkways, simple but very convincing.

Warning stripes? Necromunda evergreen, but the area is a bit to big for that don't you think? Wouldn't look bad though.

So the sheeting is that cheap at anteno's. I never recognized. Good to know, because I will definitely need some (stacks) of it for my necro table. I hesitated so far, since there are lots of shops selling a sheet for around 20€

Chibi - Cheers mate. While I am sure it would have saved you a lot of tedium the three walkways I've finished probably cost me in the region of £4 each. Besides if I had the know how (and time) I'm sure I would have bought one set of the barriers and cast them up (for my own personal use of course).

Baiyuan - Hey. Thank you. I'm almost decided on cutting the black ends off. Mainly because its just another texture to paint and I don't think they really add that much. But I will have a game with them before I hack them up, just to make sure.

20 euros ouch!! What size was it? The stuff I bought was A4. Before you actually buy the tread plate plasticard I suggest you have a look in your local railway model shop (assuming you have one near by). I'm sure it would be cheaper, if they have it, since my local railway model shop now sells it and I think its about a £1 per sheet. I'll check next time I am in mine.

Battlefield is generally a good shop, huge variety of goods, nice contact and normally they have reasonable prices, not in this case though. One sheet, 19€.

Antenociti is so bloody tempting, such great stuff, but I can't spend anymore on the hobby right now. Must resist....

Well I slept extremely badly last night and had a huge variety of dreams... Normally I don't remember my dreams but this one was different. So when I woke up I immediately wrote down the important part on my phone. Bare with me....since this is a dream it makes little sense:

I was at my painting table (it didn't actually resemble my painting table it was outside a shuttered garage door on an industrial estate). I was painting my Tech Priest, it was quite late at night. All of a sudden I heard a noise in the sky and turned round to investigate. Behind me was a little cottage and a stream but up in the sky were giant tubs of popcorn (the size of a car minimum) hurtling towards the ground. One of them almost hit the cottage and then started bouncing towards me and my painting table. I managed to jump out of the way and it bounced over my painting table just catching it and knocking it over.

Moments later I walk back towards my upended table and look inside the garage...it was all dark and I couldn't see anything. Suddenly I was pushed to the ground as a squad of special forces, who surrounded the area. They started going into the garage jumping over my table stepping on my models (this made me sad but I was more interesting in seeing the popcorn aliens). Anyway the aliens had gone but left their sweet ride (empty of popcorn). Special forces leave and I walk over to inspect the damage and the first model I pick up is a well posed scavvy.... I've not made yet!

I'm modelling him up as soon as possible so the magos is on hold paint wise for the moment. I have family visiting this afternoon so I'm probably not going to get much done. But I'm excited about Scavvies so expect a proper update soon.

jackanory - I hadn't planned him in the slightest before the dream. He is a dream construct and I think that is why I'm so excited. I've got three scavvies in my mind that I plan on making but this one is totally new. I'm still sorting through parts at the moment.

neil101 - Indeed my subconscious is good. I think this guy may have been inspired by Migsula's Mutant "Ghost" since they both use the flagellant head. The thing is I really want some toffee popcorn now too.

Even your brain wants you to make more Scavvies! Seriously though, that's pretty awesome.

A while ago, a friend of mine talked me into using a pad of paper by my bed to record my dreams when I woke up. Most of them were the usual dream nonsense that makes sense at the time. There was one, though, where I was talking to a lecturer of mine, and he said something incredibly deep, wise and profound. Something really life changing. I woke up, really excited that I could remember it, and scribbled it down on the pad by my bed. Satisfied, I fell back asleep. In the morning, I looked at the pad again and read:

"Hawk from the moon, rats may climb the cable."

I uhhh... I haven't recorded any dreams since then.

Well the update....its not going at all well. I've just had to scrap a set of ghoul legs.

I've started a mutant too that is going much better. But he was though out and not dreamed up.

I'd like to say "Peter seek help", if it wasn't that I experienced similar things before. I once solved the major problem of a paper I was writing in one of my dreams, and the actual solution was so not what I had thought of before. And I also dreamed up two models so far. Maybe that's why so many artists are into halucinogens So if you get that subconscious input without taking LSD, well go for it! Can't wait for your dreamsculpt...

neil101 - I reckon Scarper had been listening to some of Jim Morrison's poetry before going to bed (I'm getting the feeling of Deja-vu writing that!)

migsula - Cheers buddy! They seem to have left bruises and destruction in their wake...I though Alpha Legion were meant to be stealthy (well relatively stealthy for a hulking 7 foot tall power armoured weapon)? But thanks for the popcorn.

Baiyuan - When Abigail got up I told her about my dream. She just gave me a look that screamed "Seek help and stop talking to me about little dream models!" The thing she really doesn't like about this whole dream model thing is the mess I've made with random sprues in the living room. Eek!

Chibi Bodge-Battle - groan. Hmmm I'm planning a female scavvy... I wonder if a Sailor Moon outfit would look out of place on Necromunda?

What you get when a Renegade Autogun mates with a Bolter (Umbra Ferrox pattern)

Not for the dream model (who is turning out to be a total ). This is for the other guy I've been building the weekend, a mutant with eye stalks. As always I've got much less done that I wanted.

This gun looks a little technologically advanced for a scavvy but I'm working on the principle it was stolen Now when I eventually play with the gang I hope I can roll up a drum mag and a gun sight and have enough credits to pay for them. Oh it is also huge but I think it'll work, since I want this chap to be kinda hidden behind it.

Well, well, the good old "It doesn't fit in? He stole it!" solution! Considering I did the same on Rayo, I have to say it makes perfect sense.

Also the gun looks quite cool. Only one thing and thats about the autogun as it comes from FW, I think it looks strange that there is nothing on top of the barrel. I'd add a folded down iron sight or something.

Well I have actually finished a model in 2011!!!!! It involved much effort and I'm planning on going back to the opticians .

Anyway I built this guy.....bloody hell.... back in September

Please meet Beslim Stone with his Acme zombie prodder

I see him using himself as bait* as much as herding the zombies.

Hope you like him (I'm very happy with the leather holster) and he was a bugger to photo...even with the aperture mode on full. His face really doesn't look that purple in real life but it was the best picture I could get. The second pic down looks more like it.

Progress on the dream model has been slow but through some trial and, mainly, error I'll have three new scavvies by the end of the week (I'm also going to try and finish my Magos and Servitor too). I'm off work all week with very few plans . The week after I'm off too but I have some plans .

    * he likes to think so anyway but he generally gets himself into trouble and ends up running away from the Zombies . For this reason he has been named after Wichita and Little Rock.

    Peter

    ps - Baiyuan....motivate

edit - damn I need to touch up the hazard wire.

    bigmek35 - Cheers

Scrazza - Its really bad.... I only realised how long, Stone had been sitting around, when I looked in the Dakka gallery yesterday.

Cadaver - Hey. Thanks. Hmmmm well the Zombies are a problem. I love the Mantic Zombies but having seen the scale next to GW they just really don't work for me. I'm at a loss but Enigma have released some zombie heads that might work on some GW bodies? Besides by the time I get round to the Zombies, GW will have probably redone the Vampire Counts book .

Baiyuan - Well I think your Necromunda stuff really got me in the mood for mine again.

So today has been great...sunny and warm. So I've been outside for a good portion of the day enjoying the British Summer Time.... before it ends up like Neil's holiday, again. But fear not the modelling table suckered me in after dinner and I am impressed with my progress. 2 New walkways of a slightly different design to the previous ones:

You may notice three models hastily spray painted out "Stop, these models are just not ready yet" (in a terrible Danish accent*)....the two on the right are going extremely well and the one on its back not so much (the arms and the torso are just not working). The dream model is in the middle and should be ready for WIP shots tomorrow. I might even the eye stalk mutant done too!!!!

    Peter

Double tech5 - Thanks....I'm really getting onto it again and I'm also looking forward to what's in store.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem trying to figure out what to do for zombies for my campaign. I have a bunch of the GW plastics, but the heads are so big. I've had my eye on the enigma heads, but I haven't seen how they scale.

Wow lots of nice updates Peter. Beslim Stone looks cool, ani can just immagine him coralling the zombies , day of the dead style from your lovely and detailed walkways.
and the blurry pics are just a big tease, would like to unscramble them like they do in the movies ;-) I think the scavvy will be fine mate. yiou have high standards and it will no doubt look great. besides if it doesnt you can just blame it on your subconcious ;-) really like the direction you have gone with the paint scheme on Beslim , and your right to be proud of the leather mate. the nice attention to details on his base is cool too. man i want to see a necro game with your and baiyuan's models. I hope the weather keeps fine for your week off matey.

neil101- Thanks..where you seen him corralling I see him being chased, lol. I'm hoping to start painting the walkways this week too. I'll be undercoating the new ones this morning (while Abi is at work).

Sorry about the blurry pictures but I think they will be worth the wait. The model on its back has been pulled apart and started from scratch....well a total torso swap will make the arms work Thank you for the vote of confidence and I blame a lot on my subconscious (for which Abi generally hits me anyway). I'd love to have my gang fight Baiyuan's...but alas he is so far away. Its more likely that when they are finished I'll get on a train to Leeds and have a fight against your Rogue Trader.

Yes, ok, the answer obviously is "you and me" and I really understand why you did it and I'm willing to wait. It's like stripping, it's not the same thing when you start naked...

I'd love that too and I don't see the distance keeping us from doing it. It's not that far after all. I always wanted to visit the UK GD and I still plan to, maybe not this year, but then again I also need more time to get my gangs done. So how about having that game next year...

Well I've got the dream model to a point where I want to show him off, all he needs is a little tidying up. I had to buy a box of ungors and its a nice kit indeed

I imagine him to be some sort of scout.... he looks effortlessly hard and merciless.

I'm really rather happy as to how he has turned out, especially the belt buckle. Its not exactly spot on with the dream but its pretty close..... and so far so good Migsula's special forces haven't shown up with popcorn.

Your rate of productivity is increasing lately, good thing! I like him, especially because you used beastmen parts, which still is an integral part of how I'm planning to do my scavvies (if the day ever comes that I end up choosing to play scavvies over the other twenty things I have in mind, that is).
His pose is both natural and menacing and his loadout seems to make sense to me.
Only thing I can't compliment you on is his axe. First of all it's hard to see from that perspective and secondly I don't really dig that bit that I see, too clean, too plain. Give him a jagged rusty knife I say! Possibly with the tip pointing backwards, would look great without changing his pose at all. But of course he's great already...

Yesterday I worked out that I have about 830 creds worth of gang, including the guys I'm building at the moment. That is using a combination of GW Outlanders and new scavvy rules, Anthony Cases and some of my own rules and points (includes 20 mutations). If anyone is interested in casting a beady eye over them PM me your email address. I'm going to have to start thinking about a gang leader soon! Oh what to use????

neil101 - Its not so random...only a bit of ghoul, kroot and ungor blitzed together...with a sprinkle of grot and guard and seasoned with marine belt pouches

Indeed that is a Magos with a glowing plasma pistol in the background with some turquoise detailing

madmartykmf - Cheers. I just love that the pistol is about the same length as his leg and it really doesn't seem too big!

monkeytroll - AS for the colour scheme. My dream was more vague about that....I think he had black leather and light brown skin (I might avoid brown skin so he doesn't look too much like an ungor).

logg_frogg - That picture is amusing....especially the one with a nose in the middle of his forehead and a sideways mouth....thank god they didn't give him a moustache !

jackanory - Yes, you're right. They are ghoul legs. The best thing about making mutants/scum/scavvies is the proportions can be massively out and still add to the finished product. I've found that the kroot torso looks great with ghoul legs....
    (still my favourite gang member)

Martin27 - Cheers... I'm hoping that my walks in the Lakes don't end with me meeting him... or anyone with an axe for that matter

Cadaver - Yeah there has been an excellent amount of Necro in these parts recently. Which has really inspired me to get on.

Baiyuan - Well I have a deadline now . The ungor parts were a logical step since they are the right size and have the correct feel about them (minus horns). I was a little disappointed when I opened the box to find that all the ungors have hairy backs...but I'll still be using a few of them. His weapons load out just happens to be what I need....stub gun and maul - basic scavvy equipment for the masses.

As for his axe, I'm really happy with it. It was one of the main features in the dream. It was small, plain and simple which highlighted just how big the pistol is. I'll be making it look dirty etc at the painting stage, I want to avoid hacking bits out of it. I don't want a knife... since he has a woodsman feel to him and I can also use the axe as a free maul.

How does it look from this angle? (It reckons it will take 22mins to load to dakka gallery...I'll add it later)
Hmmm the resin hurts my eyes

HF Izanagi - I'm looking forward to seeing him painted too....thats the part I'm finding difficult these days. I'm probably going to undercoat him today because I'm really excited about him at the minute.

    Thanks for all the comments

Ok, my comment was rash. The perspective changed it all, I understand what you mean by woodsman look now. Also it doesn't look too smooth anymore from the different pov. Jagged enough for my taste. So get painting mate!
I'm having trouble to get painting myself. Cortaro is primed and ready, but the only thing I managed to do so far, was washing his base a couple of times.

Martin - My walk in the Lakes yesterday ended in a pub and not the log cabin of an axe wielding maniac

Baiyuan - A picture says a thousand words....if you get the angle right You'll be happy to hear I've already undercoated him, put the other scavvies on the shelf and am planning on painting him asap.

    Plans for today:

  • Paint the new scavvy's base. I like bases and enjoy building them but when it comes to painting I have to do it first, as I lose motivation once the models finished.

  • Possibly base coat his skin. I want a slightly different colour here so a mix of 2:Tallarn Flesh 1:Fenris Grey perhaps with a small amount of Khemri Brown.

  • Tidy up the house as Abigail's parents (and possibly little sister) are coming to visit for the Easter weekend (little to no painting until next week then)

  • Tonight watch Paranormal Activity 2 with Abi and my little sister (then not sleep while I wait for a Daemon to rip me from my bed). I don't really do horror films so when we watched the first one we well and truly freaked ourselves out, I even checked under the bed! Most people I talk to say its rubbish and not scary, I always disagree and rock back and forth. Oh why am I watching the second one!?

  • Peter

Love the "two heads"-conversion! But do you really find that mutation useful? I mean, one "two heads" scavvie with two pistols will costs as much as two scavvies? I used to have two heads on one guy but got the notion that it's placing too many eggs in one basket...

Thank you. In all honesty I really don't care if he is worth it.... I think he looks bloody cool. Same reason I made a dog handler and zombie prodder, no real use in game but I think they look good and were fun. I can guarantee the two headed mutant will make the gang line up every time because I'm so happy with how the model turned out. Another way of looking at it is I could arm my Cawdor gang exclusively with Lasguns because they are so reliable but its not as much fun.

As for if he is actually worth it....well in the house rules I've cobbled together a Scavvy Costs 30creds and the two headed mutation costs 25creds, so he is slightly cheaper than two scavvies. As for putting all my eggs in one basket... could be... but its the same as a heavy with autocannon for example....he could still get killed and lose the 260cred weapon.

Style before purpose is an reason as good as any and your minis sure got style! A was just curious if you thought of something I've missed and hope my question wasn't perceived as any form of negative critique. I guess I've become something of a powergamer in recent years though, which is a somewhat dull approach to gaming now that I think of it... And yes, I guess that a scavvie with two heads will never be as many eggs in a basket as any heavy regardless of weapon!

    Anyway, your stuff is awesome!

I can relate to both positions. Nothing is better than to play a game, in which all players want to tell a story. Who cares which ganger was the most effective, when you'll remember years later that your two-headed freak suffered a serious headwound in his first battle and from that point on had constant arguments with his other head regarding strategy.

On the other hand I can hardly resist the urge to have a proper plan for my gang and to choose a lineup and loadout, that makes the most possible sense. Hard to resist effectiveness, when you're a power gamer at heart.

I think I draw the line where effectiveness influences style negatively, not the other way around.

Scenic bases and heroic poses are a good example, they suck in Necromunda. If you're desperate to win and make everybody else not want to play with you any more, then you should go ahead and make your gang of all kneeling/lying gangers on plain ground. I put my leaders and heavies on 45mm bases and my gangers are on rather tall 30mm bases and I know I will suffer for it sooner or later, but it looks so good...

Ok progress was hampered by watching Machete (which was excellent in a dreadful kinda way) yesterday so I only painted the mud on the models base, oh well. Paranormal Activity 2 was a poor imitation of the original....still made me properly jump once though.

    Lamby - Thank You.

c0un7_z3r0 - Your question wasn't perceived as anything other than a question . Oh dear admitting to being a dirty power gamer though . I think things like the hard boys tournament are for power gaming and they state that in their brief I believe. I've played in one tournament, and that was in 40k 2nd edition, which put me right off playing in that environment. To be more precise it was a Dark Angel player that put me off, the tournament was 1000pts and he had two vortex grenades! I only play for fun with friends (and Beer or Wine or my current preference Port) so while obviously I prefer to win if I don't its not the end of the world. To sum it up I think it is all to do with your playing environment and group and everyone having fun

    Baiyuan -
two-headed freak suffered a serious headwound in his first battle and from that point on had constant arguments with his other head regarding strategy.

I really hope that is not a premonition of my first game with the scavvies...he already talks to himself as it is! But you are right with Nerco more so than 40k it is about story telling.

lineup and loadout, that makes the most possible sense.

Choosing a loadout for Nercomunda is easy - a bit of this and a bit of that. That is why I use the community edition of the rules as it makes some of the differences between weapons less drastic, so there is a point to using the Laspistol over the Autopistol.

I think I draw the line where effectiveness influences style negatively, not the other way around.

I can see that in your work....style all the way so far ......stop reading this and go paint

Scenic bases and heroic poses are a good example, they suck in Necromunda. I'm dreading the same thing when it comes to my winged mutant...who I want crouched on a wall wings spread. The good thing is I'm sure I can persuade my opponent to ignore the wings...but since his body will be up high I don't think it'll make much difference.

The Good Green - Compliment indeed, cheers.

Should one of the other players really insist on drawing a line of sight to a model that clearly wouldn't be visible without its stylish base, then I'll bring a proxy miniature of standard hight and with a normal slotta base, all painted in some dayglo color for the next game and replace any questionable target for drawing los purposes with it.

Hahaha, as a matter of fact Baiyuan, once my two heads guy got a head injury and we always joked about the heads squabbling with each other! Guess some things are universal...

Hi, my name is Markus and I´m a powergamer ... Building a good army/gang is nothing I'm ashamed of doing but when winning is so important that it impedes ones creative output in a way that makes modelling somewhat dull I guess it's time to re-evaluate the situation.

I've actually started working on my scavvy gang again thanks to this and Baiyuans P&M blog (you both do a fantastic work )! I've been playing scavvies since 95-96 but switched to orlocks (which actually was my first gang) two years ago or so, but now I realized how much history me and my scavvies got (hmmm, this might sound a wee bit strange) and how much I missed that with my orlocks (another stalled project I might add). So after my last reply here I got this massive dose of inspiration and took up where I left my scavvies (two years ago)! And the one I started on was my two heads guy (Long John Silver & Mr Bob), and for the first time in ages it was really fun to do some modelling!

(port is nice though I prefer porter myself (thought that was what you meant at first), a good porter in one hand and a decent Islay whisky in the other will never fail!)

Weizenbier/Weißbier is an evergreen over here. It's from Bavaria originally but it's one of the types people drink all over germany, especially in summer. Have you tried it with some banana juice, even more refreshing (not the dark sort normally)?

Aaah yes, an occasional Weißbier is never wrong (except the day after, I get a terrible hangover if I so only have a couple of them, but damn that pic is mouthwatering). I'm in to Brittish Ale and Islay Whiskey (Laphroaig being my absolute favorite) myself atm, but next time I'll buy beer I'm gonna get myself some Weißbier for sure!

Well thanks PHD, no I haven't painted them (exept for Dwain, who's partly painted), my imagination and motivation ran out and everything came to a stand still pretty much after my last post.

But now I will try and redeem myself for I have started a new P&M blog for all my Necromunda-related projects! I just posted some pics of my most recent work on my scavvies!

Alright guys. On Tuesday morning my internet broke for 2 days...I never realised how addicted I am to the internet and Dakka for that matter....I think I might become a DCM. We'll see.

Anyway in the absence of the best procrastination device I know I've got quite a bit done. I started painting the dream model and finished building this bog standard scavvy. I really need to increase the numbers of the basic scavvies I think.

The gun looks a bit odd but I really think its just the camera angle.

    neil101 & prototype_X - mmmmm indeed. mmmmm doughnuts too.

Baiyuan - I'm rather lucky that my local pub sells that Erdinger on tap...which is quite unusual over here. I had a bottle of it the other day and it just doesn't taste the same. I find the light one gives me a headache as I drink it...maybe banana juice helps. Actually I don't know if you can get banana juice over here (unless you blitz an actual banana yourself).

c0un7_z3r0 - I know what you mean about the day after...I remember the good old days and never having a hangover. I'm not a fan of ales unless they are cold. My favourite and one you should look out for . As for the Laphroaig... don't you find it tastes like a wet ash tray?

Shame your orlocks aint painted...maybe you can paint them as a change from your scavvies. Talking of your scavvies I have missed it so will search it out in a minute.

Excellent GS work for a 'basic' scavvy

You've done a ton since I last got a little while to hang on Dakka - Beslim Stone (awesome movie you're referencing there ) is looking fantastic, and I love the aggression in the pose of your Dream Scavvy. The belts are really nice little touches.

Nothing but praise there, but I can't see much to criticise. Great to see you producing so much!

Scarper - By basic scavvy I mean stub gun and maul. All my scavvies get the GS treatment since this is a modelling project much more than gaming....though of course most of my scavvy models need GS work otherwise they will have holes in them

I'm shocked by my productivity Beslim Stone was fun and the movie is great. I'm really rather happy about the naming conventions of this project. Its quite fun to wrack my brain for films with the right reference, its harder for bog standard models though. I've got a couple of ideas knocking about for the dream model.

Oh and I promise I'll get round to some dogs at some point.

One other thing though, I would love to see some other heads on the scavvies, but the ghoule's. They look good, but they are very similar and I'd like to vote for a bit more variation. The Ungor head was a welcome change for example. Maybe use more beastmen parts for the scavvies to come.

    Hey Baiyuan

Cheers...he is going to get painted after I finish my Tech Priest, who I hope will be done over the next week. Talking of painting I hope the dream model will be finished today I really want to call him Alice but it doesn't really sound menacing.

Now I agree with you about the ghoul heads...they are getting a bit repetitive. The good news is I only have two models left which I'll be using ghoul heads on....screeching ghoul head for the winged mutant and the shaman looking head for well wyrd

Then it will be onto the ungor heads for the rest...I feel a gorkamorka ork body/ungor head combination in the works soonish

Well I decided to call him Alice after all....This scavvy is hard as nails and doesn't use his first name just the initial..... A. Beaumont

    How my mind works:

<The actress who voiced Alice in the Disney film was called Kathryn Beaumont. Beaumont sounds cool, makes me think of Jackie Brown which was a cool film. This Scavvy is as cool as cucumber. Beaumont hmmmm doesn't have the same ring to is as Alice.....A. Beaumont yeah that's better>

I think he has turned out well. I'm really happy with the skin tone and metal areas. The forge world back pack is a nightmare, it didn't look that badly sculpted/rough/rushed when I put it together.

Well it looks like I'll have to eat cheese more often before going to bed

Scarper - LOL.... does your dance look like this
    ?

Baiyuan - Good names....but I just had to call him Alice

Lucky you I've never been blessed with a "hangover-free" period of my life, I envy all that has! I usually drink my ale cold as well, though I guess it's supposed to be more room tempered. But in my opinion, no one should tell the other by which temperature to have their drinks, it's your taste buds hence you set the temperature! I've actually seen that banana beer, but haven't tried it yet. As for Laphroaig, no I actually find it very smooth, the first time I drank it, it did feel like smoking a cigarr, but then I just started loving it (as well as whisky in general).

Ok, back to Necromunda and scavvies!

I really like your new standard scavvie, nice GS-work! I especially like the bandana, makes it look really bandit-like in a cool and a bit humorous way! Alice looks great as well, the pose and the composition is very scavvie-like, it really makes him look like a dirty mutant scum who lurks the underhive in search for swag and fresh human flesh (or anything you can eat really), and the painting is superb! I really like the name as well, it makes me think of "A Boy Named Sue" by Johnny Cash (a guy who became tough as nails thanks to all the trouble his name caused, one of my favorite songs by the late Mr Cash).

As for my orlocks, you haven't missed out on anything since I'm not much of a painter, I'm actually a little worried that I'll just ruin all my modelling work, but I guess I'll have to face the music someday.. But once I'm done with my scavvies I'll commit to my orlocks, I have some ideas for my cyberpunks that need to get out of my head.

Once again your painting lives up to the promise of the modelling

Alice looks fantastic, really loving the grey skin tone you have going there.

Excellent work as always, keep it up.

    Awesome theme, conversions, and painting!!!

Quick question...are you going to make you bulkhead passages/hallways, multi-level? (Sorry, if I missed this in your thread!)

c0un7_z3r0 - Cheers for the reasurance about his name...Ah a good bit of Cash makes it all better.

monkeytroll - Thanks. I'll try to. The skin was a pain...it only came together with the final highlight. I was worried up to that point.

Molotov - Cheers and the good thing with Scavvies is they can be used quite happily for Inq too...loads of mutants to burn. I've got a lovely idea for a Puritan Ordo Hereticus Inquisitor knocking about in my head....I think I'll finsh my tech priest first lol.

Cable - Thanks for your kind words here and in the gallery

The walkways and bulkheads will eventually looks something like this:

    Spoiler:

    not mind by the way

Time for me to watch Doctor Who

    A. Beaumont is absolutely my favorite model of yours from your Scavvy gang. He looks genuinely menacing. I love it. I really like the name too!

Also, your project log is starting to make me thirsty. I'm gonna go run to the liquor store and see if I can find some Erdinger and give it a try.

Cheers about Alice. In my ranking he is currently in third place, he is preceded by Coleman and Wint and Our Kidd.

Haha! Love the dream model, that skin tone is just brilliant

I love how this thread had just turned into a beer discussion as well!

    I like Desperadoes

Yeah, Desperados is an evergreen, even though it's hardly beer imho. I like it though.
My absolute favorite beer atm is really hard to get, even here. It's from a small brewery here in the north and they have lots of specialities (which unfortunatly all taste great).

If you ever get the chance to try it, be sure to have a Hanse-Porter. Dark beer with caramel flavor! Now tell me there is no god... (Just kidding secular truth of the imperium all the way!)

Just recognized they have an online shop: :O

I think I should rename this thread to "Dakkarites beers of choice" and ask a Mod to move it to Dakka Discussions.

I threw these together....then got to use them in a game of 40k. It was a draw and normally I'm happy for Martin to roll ones...except on random game length when with one more turn I could have had his bloody High King.

Very easy terrain to make.... when you realise you cannot read/use a ruler come up with something ingenious to repair the cock up

Now that you say it, good idea!

And to be honest I totally forgot to comment on Alice. He looks really cool and now that he is painted his strap and buckle look even greater. Flawless paintjob.

Only thing I'm not sure about is, whether I like the fact, that all your scavvies' skintones are so much alike. I'd propably have gone for more diversity.
