Foreword

If you are new to this blog, be welcome and look forward to a lot of projects over the years (starting 2010).

But be aware you are about to be disappointed a lot!
On these (currently 78) pages you'll see a lot of exciting projects which will often be unfinished and abandoned right before the end. Quite a lot of readers expressed their disappointment over the years.
I'm not doing this intentionally.
I often lose my Mojo and drift into depression (clinically diagnosed) and it then takes me a while to come back. Usually unable to pick up and old project, but rather starting something new with a lot of energy and excitement.
Some of the projects made it all the way, and they are making me proud
If you take the time to read though this, I'm sure you'll find a lot of ideas, can observe how my style developed and how my skills evolved and changed. Hopefully it will be an inspiration and maybe a resource for some tipps and tricks.
Thanks for being here

Cheers

Hello fellow Dakka reader and poster,

I'm new to this forum but not to WH40K and scratchbuilding.
I have my own blog at http://fischers-design-shop.blogspot.com/ and post regularily at http://z11.invisionfree.com/Work_In_Progress/index.php?act=idx and http://www.warseer.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=147.

So let me start this blog here with some of my completed projects.
I started my little workshop with the creation of some scratchbuild vehicles for the Imperial Guard.
I wanted them to be "airmobile", so I built them small and very unique.

I named the vehicles after Greek Gods, and so the DEI GRECI were born. Here in the gallery you can see some more images:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-9925_Dei%20Greci.html

Shortly after that, the WIP forum had a contest for "Fast Attack" entries.
For this I built my very own Air Assault Carrier, the THANTALOS

You can see some WIP images in the gallery:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-9924_Thantalos%20-%20Air%20Assault%20Carrier.html
BTW, the THANTALOS won the contest

The next contest at WIP was a walker contest.
Since my IG now really had their own style, I scratchbuilt the BOREAS walker.

It is based on a Kinder Egg capsule
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-9865_Boreas%20Imperial%20Steampunk%20Walker.html
It didn't win the contest, but was in the top 5.

Another contest at WIP was for a Turn Counter.
For this I had the idea to create a 3-in-1 piece of a turn counter, dice tower, and terrain objective.
So I built the "Sacred Shrine of Saint Agathe the Firece"

Again, it didn't win, but I am quite pleased with the outcome.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-9923_Shrine%20Of%20St.%20Agathe%20The%20Fierce.html

The next project was something very big (and not for a contest).
It was a time when everone build Titans or Baneblades.
Since they didn't really fit my DEI GRECI theme, I had to do something different.
The idea was something like this

with a nice interior

and I ended up bulding this monster

More WIP images in the gallery:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-9926_Zeus%20-%20Moblie%20Battle%20Fortress.html

Automatically Appended Next Post:
After I had completed the ZEUS, I started to build some diorama pieces for it.
A major component were the Commissar "Little Lenin" and his Ogryn bodyguard "Hektor"

More images in the gallery:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-9897_Little%20Lenin%20%26amp%3B%20Hektor.html

And then there was another contest at WIP. This time the topic was Artillery.
For this I wanted to try something completely different, and so I built an Ork Multiple Rookit Launcher Vehicle - the Kazuchaaah - or Stalinz Orkan

The Kazushaaah won the contest
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-9866_Stalinz%20Orkan.html

In May 2009 I began my to date larges project.
The ATHENA airship - an aircraft carrier (here held by my nephew Florian)

It is not yet completed, as there are always some in-between projects, but here are a lot of WIP images for you:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-9927_Athena%20-%20Aircraft%20Carrier.html

Then latest project is actually part of the ATHENA.
It is the CHARON, another Air Assault Carrier, loosely based on a UH-1 Huey.

Here is a §D rendering form a firend (andrea1969)

More images in the gallery:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-9929_Charon%20-%20Air%20Assault%20Carrier.html

So I hope you like my little workshop, and hopefully you will visit again
Cheers
Klaus

Excellent stuff there, I really like the airborne carrier, and the Thantalos is wonderfully brutal!

Really like the color scheme too, the orange is very different, but it works beautifully for the models.

Hey guys,

today is your last chance to vote for a name of the Callidus Assassin (currently it is Eve = 9 vs Ilse = 8 votes) over at my blog

I finished the Assassin after a lot of inking and detailing.
I really like the way she turned out.

I'm not quite sure where I will position her on the diorama, but I think she'll look good anywhere

You can see more images in the CHARON gallery - http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-9929_Charon%20-%20Air%20Assault%20Carrier.html
Next will be the two ground crew members.

Hey guys, thanks for your feedback

Right now I'm thinking about altering the deck layout of the ATHENA and will share some ideas with you, but I want to concentrate on the Tiger Team diorama first, get it completed and then, while I work an the next project for the ATHENA - the Nighhawk - then I will see if and how to apply changes to the deck layout of the ATHENA.
Currently I favour a mix of moving the bridge "out" as well as adding an angeled deck. However I need to keep the originally designed motors and motors for the four central wings in mind...as this would also required a raise of the deck and bridge...

Well, in the meantime I completed the ground crew

Applied the base colors for the little tug

Completed Sherman

and O'Donnel

as well as placed a not-so-happy Mbeng next to Ilse the Assassin

This is how it all looks right now

I hope you like it.
C&C welcome and apreciated.
Cheers

@ghosty - well that's how it was planned, but now it is a stand-alone item.

But therefore, I already have my next project "up the sleeve". Over the last few weeks, while completing the CHARON, I spent considerable time thinking over this project. I made a lot of mental plans, tweaked some ideas, made some sketches.
So now that the CHARON is completed, I immediately started on the new project - Codename NIGHTHAWK.

Don't be mistaken, the work in this post was made over the last 3 days (well rather nights). So I'm really not as fast as it may look.
Anyhow, lets get started, shall we?

So what's this?
These are the first two pieces and the basis of the NIGHTHAWK...

... still no idea what it could be?

And if you look at these pieces?

... Yes, another cockpit.

As usual I have to paint it, before I can incorporate it into the model.

But this time I only painted the basic frame, not the seats and stuff - I can include these later and I don't want to loose momentum by painting

Then I started to fit the cockpit into the first base piece...

...and then the second.

The side walls.

This was the first nights work.

The next day I added the bottom piece.

I'm sure you already guessed what the NIGHTHAWK will be, right?
It will be an ATHENA based VTOL Interceptor/Destroyer.
The overall design will be (very) loosely based on the BF/ME 110 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messerschmitt_Bf_110 ). But as a true carrier plane it will have folding wings - and as a VTOL it will have a huge central fan for the "vertical work" in addition to the two forward engines.

So I'm using Tommyguns method ( http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4852594&postcount=1311 ) to build the fan for the central engine.

And while the blades cured, I also made a simpler second turbine thingie for the underside.

Which looks like this mounted.

The main, upper fan in place.

Then I worked some more on the lower nose section,

as well as the lower tail section. Both sections required considerable amounts of putty...

...an tape

Here you can see the first pieces of the rotor housing and upper nose in place.

Last night I did a lot of sanding and grinding,

smoothing the lines.

But it really comes along nicely.

The last action yesterday was to rework the forward nose and fill the gaps with putty - so some more sanding ahead of me.

As said, it is very loosely based on the ME110, but other than the Messerschmidt, it will be "leveled" while on its landing gear, not "tail down".
So for this it will have a wheel in the nose as well as the two wheels under the engines. Its armament will most likely consist of:
4-6 AA-Hunter-Killer Missiles - or bombs, depending on the mission
4 Machine Guns in the nose
2 Punisher Cannons under the engines

Considerable firepower, isn't it?
The project idea is to have two of them. The first one will be on the elevator of the ATHENA, with the wings folded up, canopy open and Pilot and Navigator beside it. The second NIGHTHAWK will be on the forward landing platform of the ATHENA just taking off - so it will be on a transparent fly base in the air.

The current project name NIGHTHAWK is only a WIP name. If you have any ideas for a real (Greek) name, let me know, and I will put up some votes again

Let me know what you think of the project and my plans.
Cheers

Klaus

Thanks guys

Well, I would really like to use Owl or "Uhu" (Eagle Owl) as name - does anyone have a translation?
I looked into "Clash of the Titans", but the (brass) Owl has no name there ...

Also I am VERY satisfied with the CHARONS rating at CMON - currently at 8.7
http://coolminiornot.com/258304

OK, on to the "Nighthawk/Owl".
Here you can see how the wings will look in the end.

Well, since this will be the plane on the elevator, it will have its wings folded. So here you can see the wing roots...

and the folded up wingtips.

But of course I don't want the wings to be so thin and flat, so I started to build up some ribs.

and mounted them.

Then I used 0.25mm thin Plasticard and wraped it around. Similarily to the ATHENA I used 2cm wide strips (instead of 1 wide sheet). I have to admit that I'm not 100% satisfied with the result, so the other Nighthawk will have the wing wraped in one sheet.

While the skin on the wings cured, I worked on the engine fans (again using Tommyguns method - http://www.warseer.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4852594&postcount=1311 ).

Here I started to mount the first engine...

and then I build the housing around it.

I can tell you, this is the model with the most putty and sanding involved EVER!

Somehow the rear exhaust look completely crooked here, but on the model they are straight...

More filling, sanding and smoothening.

And this was the status on Saturday night:

On Sunday my wife was out on a trip, so I had a lot of time - unfortunately she had the camera, so I have no step-by-step images.

First I built the rear fuselage

and here you can also see the 4 autocannons - or should I label them machine guns?

The rear fuselage has also flaps - looking at this image I think I have to remount this one, as it looks askew.

Next was the landing gear. Remember that it is a VTOL, so it won't need a heavy duty gear.
I used the tires of a Revel Me110

But the actual gear is scratch built.

As mentioned, I also want to mount two Punishers on the Nighthawk.
Here you can see the two guns, but I need your help deciding if I should really mount them...

I mounted them with Blue Tac, and this is how it will (most likely) look.

I think it will look good.

quite some serious business

Please leave a comment and let me know what you think of the Punishers on the Nighthawk.

Then I worked on the AA-Hunter-Killer-Missiles.
I used my "drill method" ( http://fischers-design-shop.blogspot.com/2010/07/scratchbuilding-rocket-pod.html ) to create the warheads from an old piece of sprue.

And here you can see the finished missiles together with the wing tip (on which they will be mounted 3ea).

That was a productive weekend and I hope you enjoyed the read.
Cheers
Klaus

Thanks guys for all your feedback and suggestions.
@Rose_Mountainz - thanks, but I don't really think my pieces are GD worthy. They may be unique and very different, but I'm afraid qualitiy-wise I'm no on-par with GD stuff.

I really listen to all of you (and the guys on my blog, at WIP and Warseer), and so I decided to have two armament versions.
The Nighthawk/Owl on the elevator (this one) will have the 6 AA-HK-Missiles in addition to the 4 nose machine guns, while the second model will have the two Punishers and a Hellfire AtG Missile in addition to the nose armament.
So the two different wing types will look like this - I think I will add an Ammo Drum for the Punisher mounted on the engine housing.

So this is how the completed wings look:

The outer round pieces are the secondary thrusters for landing and take-off (or hovering). Also note the patching on the right wing - Here I had a major hick-up while sanding and I decided to cover it up as a patched battle damage. relatively crude, thick metal, larger rivets - it will also be bare metal in the painted version.

This is how the wings look in the folded position on the elevator

Then I worked on completing the cockpit, and for this I created the gunners station:

And with all the owl-talk about the name - I think I will settle on STRIX (thanks ashhammer) - I remembered a painting I did half a lifetime ago.
It depicts a 1939 Lagonda "LG Rapide" and an attacking Owl. I did this during my early airbrush times - September 1991 says the signature - where most of my work was still with a regular brush and the airbrush was mainly used for highlights and the background.

Anyhow, I think I want to use this owl for the side wings of the rear fuselage (just like I did with the tiger face for the CHARON).

And maybe a black silouetted version over a red circle as the unit logo?
Who knows...

I hope you like the armament solution and STRIX for the name.
Cheers
Klaus

From the very beginning Dencara was a neglected world, hot, dusty, and without any real industry.
Due to this pathetic economical situation Dencara is Aptus Non - despite the now flourishing economy.
Caused by the unusual composition and arrangement of the systems planets, Dencara 5 is subject to repetitive asteroid and comet impacts, which are pulled into the system by the gravitation of the Dencara 4 giant. But it is exactly these impacts that do supply Dencara 5 with its precious ores. Most of these ores are stooped by the nomadic Scarabs.
And so, today Ore deliveries from Dencara are very treasured on the forge worlds in and around the Segmentum Ultima.
If it wasn't for its very high quality and precious ores, the Dencara system would have long been forgotten.
(Taken from my Fluff)

Well, I did work some more on the STRIX.
First I painted the instruments and cockpit interior

Then I started to mount the pieces - first the pilots HUD

then the rest of it

For the canopy I'm looking at the rather stubby nosed canopy, like the Arado AR-240.

And so I strated to build the canopy front

and then last night the suporting pieces for the canopy "hatches"

I hope you like it
Cheers

Klaus

Really good work on everything. I love it when people who have the talent to do this stuff, go all out.

I have a minor point of critique if you don't mind though. The Athena is a little light on AA capabilities. A couple Hydra turrets are nice, but Aircraft Carriers of old relied on more then just flak cannons. They had hundreds of machine guns surrounding the ship.

The Flak Cannons were better at taking out slow moving heavy bombers. Fighter aircraft would have been a lot harder to hit with them. Maybe installing a few point defence stubbers around the ship would give it a bit more of an authentic look.

Great work and a very unique look. I'd love to see an Apocalypse game with your carrier present. Or heck, maybe even just the clear plastic stands that will be required to hold it up.

Your "Little Lenin" commissar reminds me of Jamie from Mythbusters, although I think that is due to the mustache and beard.

Not to worry
Well from the provided images it may be not obvious, but there are some twin Stubbers (3ea) on the Island

There is also a NEMESIS CWIS system on the rear side of the island (just above the Hydra)

On the nose (and also on the rear balcony) there are 2ea Twin Autocannons

and under the jump deck there is a combined tripe Punisher/6 AA-Missile launcher turret

Together with the new STRIX interceptor VTOL plane as CAP, I think this should be plenty to ward off any Ork attackers
Cheers

Thanks guys,

Someone in the other forums mentioned the seat belts ... and he's right, they (seat belts) could be more detailed, but they will be hardly ever seen, as I hope that the overall model plus the ATHENA around it AND the (female) Pilot and Gunner, together with a very special mechanic (Agatha Clay anyone?) will draw the attention away from the belts :-)

But back to the STRIX.
I completed the canopy

and added some details to it

then I finished the body with some additional details like hatches

and started to rivet

and finally mounted the wings

Still some details left, but pretty much complete.
As usual more images in my blog
Cheers

sorry for the lack of updates.
First my trip to the US, then the re-design considerations for the ATHENA, and finally some serious kidney issues last week, kept me very real-live-busy, and left me little time for my projects.

So lets talk about the ATHENA.
As discussed in the last post I'm not quite sure how to proceed with the ATHENA and what her role will be. I am considering to build a cmpletely new superstructure with a small VTOL deck and a new weapons layout.
See the comments section of my blog:

But as Da Masta Cheef suggested, the layout of the Arleigh is rather nice: http://media.defenseindustrydaily.com/images/SHIP_DDG-100_Kidd_lg.jpg
or the Russian Udaloy class: http://unsd.macrossroleplay.org/udaloy_1.jpg So I could build a new centered bridge, with a VTOL pad in the rear, re-position the Hydras, and ....

Since this will have quite some impact I will take my time to consider things and evaluate the involved work.
It will be fun and I really look forward to it, but I don't want to rush into the wrong direction. So please bear with me and be patient.

But you all know me, and know I can't be without a project for longer than 10 minutes
So I did start something new...(please be aware that the following pieces were build over the course of a week, not in one day)

So here's the start:

A Zeppelin? Cool!

Aehm, with tracks?

As you can see in this sketch, there's more to it

Ork SEALZ, integrate with "Defense of Xantium" diorama...?
Yep, that's the idea.
An Ork version of a Mole
The plan is to have a diorama with the Xantium defense on top, while beneath it, one can see the lower, underground level of the city, with the mole breaking through and an Ork raid commando - the SEALZ - attacking some defenders there.
One half of the mole will be open, so one can see the interior, while the other will be close, so one can see the outside.

For your recollection, this is the Defense of Xantium diorama.

**
OK, so the mole - current code name is "Roly Poly" - will cut its way through the rocks and ground via some plasma blasters, which simply melt the ground in front of the mole.
The tracks will then move the device forward. For this it will have tracks at the bottom, the two sides, as well as the top.

The Roly Poly will consist of 3 sections. The forward "attack bay" that will contain the SEALZ, the central "bridge" with the Capt'n, the Navigator, and the Sonar man, as well as the rear "Engines" room with the Mek and an assisitant. I decided to use a full Ork crew, not Groots.

For this engine room I have an image in my head. Some old, dark WWII submarine, as seen in the movie "The Boat"...

Then I started to build the tracks for the right side

And this is as far as I got

I hope you like this project and I look forward to your feedback and suggestions.
As said, the project actually belongs to my "Stachelnschweinz", so no Greek names, but never the less, I'm still looking for names:
The vehicel itself
Captn
Navigator
Sornar ops
Mek
Engine assistant
and maybe the boss of the SEALZ...
Thanks
Klaus

Hello FantasyBob,
yes, all these pieces are scratch built.
You can view them in my Gallery http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-32373-11505_Defense%20Of%20Xantium%20Diorama.html or read about it in my blog http://fischers-design-shop.blogspot.com/2010/04/defense-of-xantinum.html

It was really fun building these things, like
the Spida tank

Da Ninja

The caught Bomba-Grot

or the Ork in Mega Armour

but I haven't got past painting the first few figures

So building this mole to integrate later into this diorama, will hopefully get me to finish it

Cheers
Klaus

Amazing work, all over everywhere in this plog.
Obviously the craftsmanship here is extraordinary. But what I like just as much is your design aesthetic. The look and feel of these tanks and flyers is unique and wonderful, but also very "40K" and believable -- in a blunt, crude, "grim distance of the far future" kind of way. It looks sci-fi sleek, but also brutally industrial. Well done.

Thanks to Da Masta Cheef "Wotwuzdat" will be the name of the Sonar Operator! The name is pure gold! Yes, this will be his name

Well, todays update is a bit shorter than usual as progress is a bit slow.
I closed the lower part of the right hull side.

and prepared the two upper tracks

As usual the tracks are handmade

Quite some work, but I really like the result

Here's another scale shot with the diorama

And another sketch of how I envision the underground scene:

The Dirtmuncha will be breaking (actually melting) through the walls of the lower city, opening its jaws to release the SEALZ.
There will be some dead Imps and a Dreadnought against the SEALZ leaving the Dirtmuncha via an Assault Ramp - of course there will also be some dead Orks on the ground too.
As mentioned in the previous post I'm fancying the idea of doing some OSL painting, with muzzle flashes and stuff...
But first I have to finish the mole and its interior
Cheers
Klaus

Hello Viktor,

the broken look is generated, by shaving off all the corners of the plasticard.

really taking the knife at an angle and cut pieces out of it

and repeating this over and over

you get those really ragged edges

With this the build takes considerably longer than a clean standard IG build, but I think the result is well worth it
Cheers
Klaus

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hey guys,

I was finally able to complete the build for the engine room, by finishing the outside and closing all the little holes and gaps on the inside

After that I primed the engine room

and after priming it was time to re-arrange my desk from "Ork-Build-Chaos" to "Paint Station Order"

I applied all the base colors

also in the engine room

ready for inking and washing.

Finally I took a reference shot for the lighting, as I would like to try OSL for the first time...

...I'm still not sure if I can pull it off with OSL, as I never did it before, but the tight and dark confines of the engine room, as well as the well defined light source (just one light bulb on the ceiling), this is probably the best chance I'll ever get for OSL.
So if have some experience to share, links to recommend, or just some "good luck" to wish, let me know
Cheers
Klaus

It's been a while, hasn't it?

Well, I was working on the Ork mole and tried some OSL painting.
However, I'm not very satisfied with the result

so I will have to experiment with this some more.

In the meantime, I decided to do something new.

"Oh NOES!" some of you may cry.
You're right, currently I have a hard time concentrating on my projects and especially finishing them up.

But there is light on the horizon, as this new project is...

...Well, the re-design of the ATHENA!
Yes!
She's back on my desk
I hope to hear some happy cries and see some dances through the internet

As discussed I am no longer satisfied with the "Aircraft Carrier" idea. The reason is simply scale.
If I was to make her a "plausable" carrier, she'd have to be a lot bigger - even with VTOL aircraft.
So lets take another walk around her hull and upper deck - I have already put the "island" aside.
The side with the torpedo launchers and bomb racks

the front with the Siege gun and quad las-cannons

the rear with the propellers and the twin auto-cannons

As well as the deck with the multiple rocket launcher, the Hydras, and the Nemesis CIWS

and in the rear the elevator with the STRIX on it

Looking back at my original plans you can see the ATHENA was not designed as a real carrier - but I got carried away while building *grin*

So what purpose should she serve then?
Her main task will be to support ground attacks by delivering massive firepower and at the same time either establish air-superiority or at least defend herself against any aerial attacks.

For the ground attack role she currently has:
-Siege Cannon
-2x Mk XV Imperial Torpedo Launcher with Mk VIII Draconis Melta Torpedoes
-2x Quad Las-Cannons
-Missile/punisher combo
-multiple rocket launcher
-2x 500lbs Bomb racks

For Air Defense she currently has:
-2 Hydra turrets
-Nemesis CIWS
-4 twin Autocannons
-4 twin Machine Guns (they were mounted on the island, and I will re-use them)
-STIX Interceptor VTOL

So I decided to "open her up" again, and removed the entire deck.

gave her a new sheet of plasticard for the rear area (where the elevator used to be)

And this layout gives me a good 30 cm for the actual bridge area (on which I want to mount the two Hydras and TWO Nemesis turrets), as well as it gives me room for another big turret - symbolized by the wooden box.

So what do you think?

What kind of weapon should I use for this large forward turret? Any more weapons that would be plausable or neccessary?
Well, let me know
Thanks for reading
Cheers
Klaus

Happy cries and dancing! Nic eot see this one going again; really loved that ship.

Whne it comes to the big tower, I feel a ground-aimed gun would be a bit awkward unless it had a parabolic trajectory; maybe a huge mortar or a missile silo, like on a nuclear submarine? Vortex missiles anyone?

Hey ... constructive suggestion. i make lots of custom orky bitz. the whatchamakalitz you are making look great, no question but i dont bother with a box cutter for wearing the sides of the orky bitz. If you go to your local salvation army they should have a bunch of old bread knifes. the serated ones. these are great for tearing up the sides of orky plates with. they naturally poduce a jagged edge. just a thought.
question. what kind of glue do you use on the Plasticard. i have not been able to find a bonder that works well.
BTW your stuf f looks awsome. i love it.

That would definitely fit the bill . Will you go for four missiles in a row or a control turret and two missiles to each side? Or a box launcher like you see on titans?

Thanks guys,
from your feedback it seems that it was the right decission to change the ATHENA all together.
In regards to the weapons discussion, I am considering to have two banks of AA-Missiles, maybe two vertical launchers for Manticore-style missiles, and a main turret with a tripple Earthshaker(?) - thanks to Freakazoid @ WIP - this could give her some long-range direct and indirect firepower and would make her look like a big bad battleship
With this settled I immediately started to work on the new bridge and deck layout.
As previously mentioned, I'm looking along the lines of the US Arleigh and the Russian Udaloy Class destroyers.
They do have some nice deck lines.

So I experimented with the deck layout

As you can see, I will keep the landing pad for the VTOL and even an elevator - I only removed the "sunken" one, as this was too limiting.

To keep it along the original design lines of the ATHENA and the Steampunk theme, I drew some ornaments on .5mm plasticard.

and created portholes form a plasticard-rod

Mounted these walls give the first level a very nice outline

Then I did the front plate and ornamented it

Eventhough the lines and angles are a bit modern-ish, I still think they fit the ATHENA well, don't you think?

Thanks for reading and I look forward to your comments and suggestions.
Cheers
Klaus

Thanks guys.

Well, last night I continued with the forward plates of the bridge's first floor.

It takes some time to cut all the ornaments and fit everything into the angles.
But I'm very pleased with the lines.

I will leave the rear walls open for the time being, till I'm 100% sure how the rest of the bridge will look and maybe I'll use this area for another Mural Window or such...

With the two Hydras in place.

And to solve the mystery of the missing doors in the front plates.
The actual nose area with the 2 Twin Auto-Cannons and the rocket launcher, can be accessed via the two doors marked in red.

And for the area between the nose and the bridge, I plan to do some hatches, like in the image below. But before I do that, I have to look into the final position of the big turret, as well as all other weapons I may place there (potentially the vertical lunchers for the Manticore and some AA missiles).

We'll see.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to your comments, feedback and suggestions.
Cheers

Thanks guys.

@wolfshadow and worldwarme: thanks for taking the time to go through the whole post again - actually quite a lot to digest. I just checked on my blog, and the first ATHENA post was on 22. May 2009 - http://fischers-design-shop.blogspot.com/2009/05/new-project-code-name-athena.html - while today was the 71st post on the ATHENA

Well, some of you may remember this group, that I built for the 60mm base contest at WIP. And despite them not faring well in the contest, I want to use them on the ATHENA

So I started to build the upper level of the bridge, with some windows for the briefing room

note the shutters.

Then I continued with the front plate

and ornaments for it

I think this front looks quite pleasing

one of the side panels received some patched-up damage

*
The upper level of the bridge fits neatly into the new outlines

Then I build another shutter - this time for the glass roof of the conference room

I'm really pleased how this comes together

and lastly I build an access ladder to the upper roof last night

I hope you like it, and I look forward to your comments, feedback, and suggestions.
Cheers
Klaus

@MeatShield - I'm honored, but really, would you give this baby out of your hands?
I have soooo many ideas for painting the ATHENA, that I have to constrain myself not to rush the build.
@weetyskemain44 - hehe, the last bridge version had some painters on it:

so who knows...

Well, I continued with the ATHENA and the next piece on my list was the radar and sensor array.
So experimented a bit

Placed a table tennis ball as radar dome on a pole

but that didn't look so good, so went without the pole, but added various antennae and sensors

I still need to add cables and details

as well as the ornaments

but all in all, I'm quite pleased how it integrates into the overall lines and shape of the ATHENA

Thanks for reading.
I look forward to your feedback, comments, and suggestions.
Cheers
Klaus

The little painters are cute - they remind me of the starting sequence from comedy sci-fi tv show "red dwarf" were there is a little space man painting the side of an ENORMOUS space ship with a tiny roller brush

It's true. I often have to tell my self that I can't paint something until I've had a good week to look at it, because so many times I find myself just staring at a converted piece that I'm pleased with so intently that I miss the obvious flaw somewhere else on the same mini.

Thanks guys,

@Viktor von Domm - don't worry, I do post here especially to get feedback - even if it is negative, but yours is constructive anyway
I thought about the radar, and I understand the issue, but look at these two images:

As you can see, that's the way the sea-radars are - plain as a ball

Well, it seems the new radar and sensor array really evoke differnet opinions. I do agree that the new bridge has a more modern look and feel to it, especially the new radar bridge. But on the other side, the angles are almost identical to those I used on the ZEUS. But I really think the paintjob will make the difference in the end...
We'll see.
Anyhow, I did continue and added the cables to the sensors and radar.

To the front I added mainly rivets and a parchment for a scroll.

Here you can see the rear with the stacks and stuff.
She will NOT receive an hangar. It will only be a landing platform and some hooks.
This will give me a large rear wall area, that I can use for a big painting of Athena
But at the first level you can see the two angled sides, these will receive doors - kind of a small hangar, but not for the large VTOLS, rather for small drones (shamelessly stolen from Tinners at WIP - http://z11.invisionfree.com/Work_In_Progre...howtopic=16981).

And here are finally 3 shots with the Hydras in place

I really hope you like it
Cheers
Klaus

Splendid as always. While I agree that the round ball radar is prefectly realistic, the one with all the facets would look a bit more hightech IMO - not that i think the ball-shaped one is bad, mind you .

Nice to see it come together!

the rounder radar is used to detect planes and such, the golfball is weather radar, i forget the reasoning behind this.

Problem with the ball at present, is that it is looking like a ping-pong ball placed on top of the bridge.
It would be improved imho by flattening the bottom by taking a (lacks correct geometric term) off so it sits as per the examples shown.

That's the problem with doing work so special as this Klaus.
We have such high expectations that every small detail will get scrutinsed and pounced upon for the slightest perceived error!

I agree with Chibi, needs to be something around the bottom of the ball, maybe just a strip of plasticard so it looks like it's sitting on a platform.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but the last weeks were horrible.
First I got an "angina" which developed into a suspected pneumonia, and now calmed down to some very heavy coughing. And on Friday we had to put our 16 year old cat JoJo to sleep.
It was very hard for me to let our litte princess go, even though I did know it was time - almost too late for a pieceful and dignified end.
I hope she's now at a better place, beyond pain and cancer.

As you can imagine, this completely "took the wind out of my sails"... but since I don't know when and how I will continue, I wanted at least to wrap up what I've done since the last update.

Here you can see the space available as landing platform.
Big enough for the CHARON,

the THANTALOS

and the STRIX

And then I started to work on the main turret. As discussed I'm aiming at a triple Earthshaker.

And this is the final turret

It still needs a lot of details and the ornaments, as well as it isn't the final position

As said, I don't know when and how I will continue, as with JoJo most of my motivation is gone.
Maybe I will do something completely different, maybe I will submerge into the wold of some computer game again...I really don't know.

Cool airship, out of interest is it loosely based on the ships seen on the front cover of the current codex? I feel your cat related pain My 11 yo cat also died recently, he got shot, was never given his body by the gamekeeper so this suggests he crawled off somewhere to die painfully, poor blighter. Maybe Jojo and Stoofa are hissing at each other in cat heaven as we speak.

Thank you guys.
This helps a lot.

Well, usually I have no business with the Eldar or Dark Eldar, but my nephew Florian raised his Christmas whish:
"A character by Klaus - I want Kheradruakh"
Ough!
A Dark Eldar :(

Since I don't know anything about DE or their codex I conducted a Google search, but it didn't reveal much:

  • [*]Mandrake champion and master assasin
    [*]4 arms
    [*]enormous sword "Decapitor"
    [*]Splinter pistol
    [*]Dark Energy (or flames?)

  • Like all Mandrakes he's perfectly camouflaged, infiltrates and attacks out of the shadows. He's canibalistic and cornivorous and lives outside any social restrictions. He collects the skulls of his enemies and he's adorned with trophies.
    A nice and friendly character

After checking the GW website and looking at their new Mandrakes, I realized I'll have to scratch build (or rather sculpt) him.
The intended pose is a surprise attack out of the shadows and over a rock. Firing the pistol at one target while he raises his sword over his head to attack another target (and maybe even firing off a ball of fire at yet another target).

Unfortunately I have no images of how I started, but here's an early image.

Here I added the ragged pants and you can see his twin chest.

I have to admit that if I'd have seen LuckyNo5's Haemonculi ( http://z11.invisionfree.com/Work_In_Progress/index.php?showtopic=17044&st=0 ) I would have used rather that option than my "double chest"

Then I continued by mounting the pistol hand and sculpting the arm

From what I understand, his skin is all broken up and covered with runes, so I tried to sculpt it that way

Once I was through with the basic sculpt, I realized the head I had initially planed to use was way to small. So I had to start sculpting that too.
Here you can see the early face and a crude belt

Last night I mounted the sword, added a bracelet, as well as a necklace, which will have a chopped human hand at its end

There's still a lot of cleanup to do, as well as adding a million of details. I'll have to complete the legs and his feet and after that it will be all the details... more bracelets, skulls, a spiked necklace, and insignias.
Also I'm thinking about adding some seams and stitches to the pants, so that it looks more like skin patchwork...

As said, I never did anything with Dark Eldar, so please let me know what you think.
    Cheers
    Klaus

    Post by: Klaus, not Santa

    Hey guys,
    thanks for the feedback.
Sorry if I'm coming off a bit rude, that's not the intention. I just think it would be sad if your hard work doesn't meet your nephew's expectations because of a stylistic misunderstanding.

Don't worry, if I couldn't stand the heat, I wouldn't be in the kitchen *lol*

perhaps it's kind of nitpicky on my side, but it kinda bothers me to see "Decapitator" consistently misspelled.

Well, at least I am consistent - thanks for pointing it out though

OK, I had a chat with my nephew, who *completely* forgot to tell me about the Splinter pistol...oh well...but anyhow, I pointed him to the image of the Codex and he told me that he did not want that dull Urang Utan style dude simply croutching on the skulls.
    He wants a dynamic pose

So, with your feedback and Florians "guidance" in mind, I removed the head and the pistol hand, but kept the rest

Then I added the torn remnants of shirt and some other stuff, like the torn IG arm hanging from his side

Then I started to work on his base

Gave him more accessories, like the DkoK head :-P

    And started another head.
Please bear in mind this is still Work in Progress!
I know he's a Mandrake, but I don't really like their faces without mouth. And from the official image, though quite shadowy, you can he he has more ape-like features and a big upper lip, like a Neanderthal.
To support the attacking pose I wanted to sculpt him with an open, snarling mouth.

So, still a lot to do, and I'm sure not everyone will like the head
    Cheers
    Klaus

    Hello all,

as said, I was expecting this reaction about his head
I really apreciate your feedback and I like what you wrote. Eventhough I have quite a different image in my mind (apparently), but I guess that's just free imagination.

Anyhow, I did continue and first he received some hair - I was quite afraid he's look emo...

After several detail steps I mounted him on the base and remounted the sword

You may realize the additional details on the base, like the maggots and stuff

And here he is, primed and ready for painting

    Cheers

    Thanks guys.

So, I started to paint this little killermachine.
Here you can see all the base colors applied

Then I toned everything down with several coats of washes

Then i experimented with the lights to see about the atmosphere setting.
I started off with lights from below

Which looks good, but I decided to rather go with lights from above

Several steps later I painted the sword with an energy flash pattern

And this is how for I got over the last two days:

I hope you like it so far
    Cheers

@wolfshadow, it's called ProCreate from Kraftmark and it's a two-component stuff, like Green Stuff. I prefer it, as I can mix it it smaller amounts and it's less sticky (which turns some people down).

Thanks and Happy New Year to all of you!
I hope you had a good start and I wish you all the best for 2011.
Health, Good Luck, Love, and Success.

Here's my very own personal Christmas gift - the 75 colors set from Vallejo. It arrived in my postbox on the 31st

And since I still have so many unfinished projects on my shelf, I decided to do some painting rather than building.
So I'm starting the year with the painting of the SPIDA tank from the Defense of Xantinum diorama (well actually I started after Chrismas).
The idea is to apply something like a WWII "Flecktarn" pattern to the SPIDA.
Applying the camouflage dots ruined two brushes

Then I started to add little details, like metal for the leg joints, blue for the cables, and silver for the hydraulic pistons.

I added some Ork markings, bits of brass and rust.
    "Evil Eyez"

    Da Trigga - unplugged

And this is as far as I got over the last few days:

Once I have all the details I will give it some washes and after that it's time for weathering and damages. The crew will be last.
    I hope you like it
    Cheers
    Klaus

    Thanks and Cheers everyone,

I continued with the Spida last night. I gave him a thin wash of Devlan Mud, applied with the airbrush. It toned down everything nicely.

Then it received a heavy washing with Badab Black, applied normally with a brush.

    Starts getting grimy and dark.

Then I applied the first highlights.

I'm not sure if its really visible, but I did the red fuel can and its straps, the hydraulics pistons received a metal highlight, and the hexagonal mounts of the hydraulics got some first highlights.

Still a lot of highlighting and detailing before I can add the weathering and damages....but I really look forward to that
    Cheers

    Thanks,

I completed the Spida walkers base.
All damage and weathering is done, eventhough it will receive some rust and dust pigmenting once in the diorama, but this will have to wait till the diorama base is completed, so all minis will fit and blend in.

You can view some in-between image in my blog, but here are the final images.
A front leg with the "Stachelnschweinz" Icon

    Another front leg

    Two of the rear legs

Front view - does it look real and scary enough?

Eventhough the turret and gun aren't completed yet, they look nice on it

    I hope you like it.

    Thanks

Well I managed to complete the weathering and damaging.

First I did the driva and his manic grin

then the platform and the gun

and finally the outside of the drivas compartment - or the face

    The right side

    Left side

    Front

I really like how it turned out. Now I have to complete the Gretchin crew.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but my hernia operation strained me a bit more than I thought.
Nevertheless, I was able to complete the "Suicide Bomber"

Then I started to work on the Waaargh Boss, and decided to remove him from the big diorama and give him a setting for himelf.
For this I cut some styrofoam and mounted it on an old blank-CD case

Then I covered it with some instant plaster

And gave it some coats of paint and some drybrushes

Another staging shot with the actors

and the first paint for the 3 Orks

    I hope you like it

So I continued to work on the "cream pie"

I completed the little Gretchin Ninja, and since he was a bit featureless and dull (simply black), I decided to give him a glowing power sword

Then I used Lemmingspawns color recepie to give the boss his rusty base color

    and added colored panels

    Next was the Gretchin drummer

    and some details

and this is the current state of the pieces

    Hey all,
I was finally able to continue with the scene.
I toned down some of the colors some more

yes, there is a rip in the center of the banner, intentional, but unfortunately not as visible as I wanted it.

I also completed the Dark Angel (not the eyes are dull, no longer glowing and shining)

And all actors on the scene

    And another total

I hope the idea of the scene "Boz o' da Dakka!" (Leader of the Attack) also comes clear, that while everybody looks at the huge boss, in reality the little Ninja leads the attack, by sneaking up and killing the enemy.
Theres still some detailing, cleanup and weathering to do, as well as some rubble for the steps is needed, but the majority of the job is done and I'm quite pleased with the result.
As usual you can see more in my blog:

While I'm waiting for some items needed to complete the "Boz o' da Dakka" scene and waiting for the votes of the Deathwatch Competition to close, I was wondering what to do next...
...of course I could always continue on the ATHENA, or paint the STRIX, or...
    ...start something completely different

And while wandering the wide expanses of the internet and WH40K forums, I ran across a competition on Ammobunker for "Inquisitorial Henchmen"
Now that's a really cool topic and a brilliant competition - but for me the timeline is a bit too competitive :-P

    Nevertheless, it got me thinking.
And you know what happens then

Of course I could never be satisfied with simply building one miniature all by itself...no, Mr. Klaus must always build more, bigger, larger ...
So over a few nights a simple idea brewed into something that's far from simple *chuckle*

    The working title is:
"Inquisitor Hellsryche - Court Martial in the Field"

I'm starting out with a vehicle build. It will be a 99% scratchbuild.
Please note: the following build process was done over a timespan of 5 days
I started with the basic frame of the vehicle and the wheels (the Dencarian Naval officer is only for scale)

Since I wasn't quite pleased with the wheels I selected, I used some ProCreate and sculpted some tires onto them

Then I worked on the body of the vehicle

and now it may remind you of this classial limo

Then I worked some on the interior, and as you can see, it will have 3 seats and a larger seat in the back

And, to make it more compfortable and clasical I also sculpted some cushions

I will do those cushions also for the other seats.

As usual you can see more images and details in my blog.

I hope you like the start of this new project.
Let me know what you think.
    Cheers
    Klaus

    Thanks guys,

    I continued building things out.
For Ordo Hereticus Grandmaster Hellsryche I use the legs of Jarran Kell, and the torso of Emperor Karl

The driver received one of the "old" heads I had prepped for the ZEUS crew

but looking at these images, I realize that I have to re-sculpt the ears - they look like cabbage *lol*

Then I worked on Hellsryches face itself. Despite it being mostly under a hood, I wanted it to be very characteristic.

It's based on a standard Catachan head with some extra scars and bionics.

Next I built the "Book of Accusation", which holds all the charges of the unlucky subjects investigated and court martialed by the Ordo Hereticus

It's completely done with plasticard - the back with 1mm, the pages with .25mm plasticard.

Here's Igor the factotum, holding the Hammer of Inquisition and the Book of Accusation, which is read by the priest, or chief prosecutor

And finally another position shot of Hellsryche, the driver, and the seats in place

I hope you like the progress
    Cheers
    Klaus

    Hello Victor,
I used a black velet cloth as background.
It's a nice change from white
For the Latin, here we go:
1.) "Nullus Mundus Ultra Meum Ius Est; Nullus Adversarius Ultra Meam Iram Est"
No world is beyond my authority; no enemy is beyond my wraith.
2.) "Iter Ad Munditiam Perfusum Est Martyrum Sanguine"
The Road to purity is sprinkeled with the blood of martyrs.

    Cheers

and the black cloth...a real good idea, what do you use for lights for such a setup? somehow all the colors look very much more popping than with a bright background... will definatly try that out myself!

and do you recommend the revell glue? currently i use the UHU one second glue in the red bottle...

    Hehe
@Viktor - yes, I use the Revell glue for all plastic stuff. And Uhu "Sekundekleber" for metals.
@Chibi - well actually I worked on the Deathwatch diorama while I was recovering from my hernia operation - I was 3 weeks on medial leave and had quite some time at hand... so no real need to call the Inquisition, no witch craft involved...I swear

Speaking of the Inquisition, I worked some more on Hellsryche and his retinue.

    Here's Grandmaster Hellsryche himself

    A bystanding Monk

    The prosecutor

    Another (female) Inquisitor

    And finally the two culprits.
    "Coward"

    and "Traitor"

Most likely these two will be Dark Angels - fitting with the Boz o' da Dakka" diorama
    I hope you like it.
    Cheers

Well, if you look at the two Marines, you can see their shoulder armour already being shaved off, scratched away. and since they have the two signs in front of their chest, it's mainly drak green armor, with damages/stripped shoulder armour and no real unit signs on it

I think I've shown Hellsryche's head before, but here it is again...

    Thanks guys

Well, for the excutioner, I was thinking about using the one Sister...we'll see.

    So I did finish Hellsryche

Then I worked some more on the limo, and added the lights, standards, external luggage, and antennae

Then I started to pour the instant plaster for the base

and while it cured I put some old sprues to good use

and here you can see the podestal with the Sister as executioner

Then I started to scribe in the ornaments and symbols into the base plate

and finally all actors in place, rubble and debris added

as usual you can find more images (60+) and details in my blog
    I hope you like it
    Cheers

I'm glad you like it so far.

@Moltar - I'm not qute sure if I will. Actually I should go without, as he's in the limo...I'll have to see.

Well, last night I started with Hellsryches personal Coat of Arms - this is the simple version for Brother Luthars banner.

I used Bubonic Brown, Snakebite Leather, Golden Yellow, Sunburst Yellow, and some mix with white for the gold

The parchments base color is Heavy Skintone, and highlights with Elven Flesh

    Then I added the writing

but I wasn't very please with the background.

    So I re-did the background

and this is how it looks on Luthar

    I hope you like it
    Cheers

    Thanks guys,

@prime12357 - the darkest color is a chaos black-scarab red mix, then scarab red, then blood red, than blazing orange, and finally golden yellow. Soem of the flames I drew while the darker color beneath was still wet, so the transition of the colors is pretty smooth.

I continued painting the diorama base

and also added some pigments to make it look realistically dirty

I had the idea to try and paint the minis in a de-staurated format. Everything greyish, less colors.
For this I created my own color chart in PhotoShop

Here you can see the de-staurated red on the minis

But I wasn't quite convinced and started to doubt my course, so I quickly applied all base colors to one mini

Hmm, I don't think the de-saturated will work.

So I think I will go to my standard painting.
    What do you think?
Should I try more with the de-sat approach, or use my standard colors?
    Thanks
    Klaus

i think your going a new and artful way if you continue the de-sat way... this will look very good in the end... gritty and used like in olf warfilms or even in some of the better sifi movies...
away from the comicesque ways of painting... the streetlevel looks stunning...

looking forward to see more drysucked scenes^^

I am not sure which would look better myself - difficult decision... Desaturated might work fine so long as you get a good light/dark contrast to bring out the detail.

Some of the tones are a little similar Klaus.

If reducing the bright colours you can still play with warm/cool and light/dark contrasts.

It may be worth considering complementary colours in the greys.

Sorry if you know all this which you prolly will.

    Thanks for your feedback

Well, I agree the result from last week on the de-saturation wasn't very convincing. But I decided not to give up so easy, and gave it another try.

So I mixed up another set of greys and applied it to the test mini

Then I gave it two hefty washes of Badab Black

and that was a lot more convincing.

So I applied the grey to the other girls, gave them some washes of Gryponne Sepia (for the Gold and Skin) as well as Badab Black (all other areas, and a 2nd wash only for the blacks and reds) and last not least a wash of Devlan Mud for the leather pieces.
And in front of the base, they are almost invisible

After that I started to mix up the highlights for the gold

And this is how far I got yesterday

Which pretty much completes the gold

So it is VERY different, but I think it will be worth the effort...at least I hope so.
If it comes together as I hope, it will be very sinister and dark looking, and hopefully I can squeeze in some OSL for the Sisters Power Sword, maybe some lights on the Bolters ect. to give it some extra highlights....
    HOPEFULLY
Let me know what you think,
    Cheers
    Klaus

Wow... I clicked on this to see what "de-saturation" looked like- I like the blending tones, especially when you put up a standard Sister against the background. That's really interesting. I might have to give it a go, as I was looking for a way to give the overall theme of my new (planned) eldar army a darker, more sinister feel. I look forward to more of this!

    Thanks guys
I really, really apreciate your feedback - it keeps me driving on.

I worked some more on my de-saturated Sisters.
Upon completing the paintjob I prepared my pigments.
For this I ground some pastels and mixed the powders as I needed them

Then I applied the powders with a dry brush

and carefully applied spirit to fixate the prigments

One must be very careful with the spirit, so it doesn't loosen or strip any of the underlying paints.
But I think the result is worth the effort

So what do you think, was it worth the extra work, or could I have achieved a similar result with the standard colors?

    Cheers
    Klaus

The glow on the robes is amazing.

I'm not sure if it could have been done with standard colours, I'm not very good with paints myself, but the effect is so gritty and realistic while also giving the pinks a real soft and subtle glow to them.

I dunno Klaus... that satiny sheen on the sisters clothing is pretty special. Don't think you could have gotten that any other way and it makes their look very, very unique. Sensual without being overly sexual... like finished silk.

    Thanks guys

Well, progress is very slow, as I have a ton of work and was plagued by some hefty migrane attacks.
Never the less, I did work on the diorama.
I began painting of the Monk, the Grey Knight, and the Crusader.
I decided to finish the characters first, so I can see where each energy weapon is poisitoned and will cast it's glow on the car and the surrounding terrain.
So I charted out which colors to use.

Then I applied the de-saturated base colors as well as the first washes of Gryphonne Sepia and Badab Black

Some glazes later they look like this

and that's pretty much as far as I got :(

But in the meantime my price for the "Deathwatch Painting Competition" arrived!

A big thank you to Fantasy Flight Games for sponsoring the competition, a big thak you to DAKKA DAKKA for holding the competition, and a HUGE thank you to Jon for shipping the price despite the hilarious shipping rate!

The Muzzle Flash was self made with Green Stuff - its very simply, but I'll see if I can make a tut of it.
Yes, the actual shot is now going over the Orks head, but if you look at the way the bullet holes "wander" up the Orks body, from the belly up the head, the last shot - which is now released after the impact on the head, it goes over...so it is kind of intentionaly

    Here's the final collage:

@Yggdrasil - I really hate backpacks, somehow they never seem to be looking right, and the backpack would've looked "wrong" with the pose, I somehow couldn't get it to look right in that position.

Backpacks are a pain, but I always put them on, otherwise a marine doesn't quite look right to me.

    Thanks guys,

after all the Deathwatch stuff, I decided it was time to revive one of my older IG projects...
It's not yet the ATHENA, but I'm getting closer *wink*

After chatting with my nephew Florian I decided to complete the Nighthawk.
First I mounted the Punisher Cannons and AA-Missiles

and added some details to the wing joints

and prepared the base as stand-alone display

And for a decent display I'll need some crew, don't I?
So I looked at my old notes and remembered I planned a female pilot...
So I dug through my Dark Eldar pile and combined some bits with IG bits...

and with some GS (or rather ProCreate) she looked like this on Monday

This will be her Navigator/Gunner, with an artificial eye and mechanical arm

As of last night she looks like this:

    Still WIP

    A bit Amilia Earhart

    I hope you like it
    C&C welcome
    Cheers

I pretty much confiscate any clear plastic cover int he house, see if it's usabel, and either recycle it for a 40K project or to the recycle trash bin

ok so this is pretty much the same thing i do where any plastic that is covering the product, like the Apoc templates that i recently bought is stored and recycled, but that stuff looks thicker in this pic. looks like about the same thickness as a clear cd cover case, or is it just the simple fact that it being an extreme close-up it's throwing off my perspective?
Whiska crunch cat food, eh? never heard of it, maybe I should take a stroll through the pet food aisles at the local krogers.

    Thanks guys

@SebastionSynn - you're right, this is a thicker material. Honestly I can't remember what it was -looks like a CD Jewel Case...but I think I also had some strips of .5mm Plexiglass...let me look at my notes, maybe I can find something...

So, I worked some more on Amilia and the Navigator - any name suggestions for him?
And here they are, ready for priming:

Speaking of priming - since I'm not sure on the paint scheme yet, I consulted my aircraft book and narrowed it down to those two designs:
The BF110 German pattern is simple, but with a nice effect

the other option would be the Black Widow

Which together with the female pilot has a nice twist, doesn't it? Especially with the "Lady in the Dark" slogan/Pin Up

Speaking of books - I finally got my CMON Annual 2009, and on page 80 one can find the ZEUS:

    Makes me mighty proud

So, let me know what you think of the paint schemes!
    Cheers

The navigator shouldn't have a name. Bear with me on this. Lets say, for arguments sake, Amilia is a reckless fighter pilot, whose skill with the nighthawk is only bested by her sense of self preservation. Now, due to circumstance beyond control, and perhaps to a degree actions made by her to save her own life, Amilia goes through Navigators as quickly as vindaloo through the digestive system. The navigators die off far to quickly to gain any renown, and as such, she doesn't bother to learn their names, knowing that they'll probably be dead by the end of the day.

But yeah, just an idea for you to consider.

As for paint schemes, I think the Black Widow seems good, and the black gives a nice backdrop for any potential nose art you had in mind (?) whereas the camo would lose the detail. However, it really depends on the Nighthawks role. Is it a low flyer, similar to a valkyrie or vulture? If so, Camo would be better, to hide it from high flyers that would potentially go plane hunting.

Zeus is beautiful by the by.

i have to concure... your airship and the items already joined for this huge project i say totally go for the black widow as it ios unique in its own way but will blend in niecely to your other smaller vessels... the german pattern is too much in a certain special direction i think and would draw attention away from the rest of the setup...

just my humble thoughts^^... and you know what is meant by people who say their thoughts are humble... they actually think their thoughts aren´t humble at all^^

by the way... as of now amelia looks a bit of her facial features (not that anybody would notice cause of her cleavage anyway^^) as if she was in agony? intended?

    Hey guys,
sorry for the lack of updates.

As one of the WIP members pointed out, the old elevator is now too narrow to fit the fully armed STRIX.
So I decided to build a new platform

    Now everything fits better

    with all elements in place

The planned "hero shot" for which I had the smoke for a photo question

Then I masked the cockpit and got everything ready for priming

And now the first pieces are ready for painting

    Cheers

    Hey guys,
sorry for the lack of updates - SebastionSynn, thanks for asking

I decided to participate in the "http://z11.invisionfree.com/Work_In_Progress/index.php?showtopic=17422&st=0 Line Breaker Contest" at WIP.
Since the contest is 100% anonymous, I'm not allowed to post any WIP's.
BUUUUT, since I want to keep you all entertained and "in the loop" I decided to post an update of a very different kind
This was the desk status on Thursday

    Friday was even worse

Then on Saturday things got better, but first I had to make a million of rivets...

...and then I worked on the base.

And as of last night my desk looks like this:

So, the build phase is officially over and it's time for priming
I'm still pretty much on schedule, but my entry is big with lots of painting. Plenty of room for "effects", but I'm not sure if there's enough time, as my wife gave me a pretty busy schedule for next week *sigh*
I hope you like my rather uncommon update

    Cheers

    Hey guys,
Sorry for the lack of updates, but I was working on a littel contest entry for the Line Breaker Contest at WIP. And while I was deciding on what to build for the Line Breaker Contest I consulted a lot of my old WWII books.
One of the images I stumbled across was this image showing the crossing of an emergency bridge with some Panzer IV's. And while I built something quite different for the contest the image stuck.

    And you know me

So, despite having a lot of unfinished projects, I had to work on this new idea. So here's the first sketch of the situation and the resulting tank - the HERCULES, Son of ZEUS

I think it will be somewhere in the Macharius or Baneblade range - the overall size will be 16cm wide and 22.5cm long.

Here you can see the basic hull completed and a first sketch of the deck layout drawn onto it

Next was the platform that will hold the turret - similar to the Baneblades

The I did the drivers compartment

And I just completed the two bow gunner positions with the heavy Bolters

    So, what do you think?
    C&C welcome and appreciated
    Cheers
    Klaus

Looking good, Klaus. Are you goint to use GW parts for the cannons on the main turret or are you going to construct them from something different?

    Post by: Viktor von Domm

i think he will only use GW parts that are to difficult to do with plasticcard...the barrels for the maingun he will probably do by himself...

cool, many months ago i discovered your blog when doing some 40k related research...so i think it is really nice to see a kind of offspring to the zeus...and of course the name hercules is very fitting in that matter...^^

already i marvel at how you begin this project, the main body is already taking up quite a good and very promising shape! one question: why did you draw the coming parts on the current body already? as you by know my modus operandy (more chaosy^^or haphazard way than planned through) when i see your attempt at this new project it seems a very good way to begin that way...

rest assured that i will stay marveld and wait paitently for more updates to come and amaze us all^^

    Thanks guys,
@FantasyBob - yes, rather simple No interior details this time.

@weetyskemian44 - Thanks Well, I do plan a diorama with the tank negotiating a narrow bride, a ground guide in front and two guys besides the bridge with some kind of scanner, checking the bridge...at least that's the idea..

    @Vik - Thanks
Well as you can see from the first sketch, I already had a pretty good idea of what I wanted - even though the driver and bow bolters ended up quite different than planned
With that in mind it was rather easy to draw the deck layout onto the plasticard. BTW, the posts for the HERCULES in my personal blog are very detailed (almost step-by-step) and hopefully provide a lot of info and helpful tips

So, I continued the HERCULES with assembling the wheels (mostly Tamiya Hanomag and Sherman wheels)

    Then I mounted them

And with the skirts you get the idea of the actual tank

Then I started to build the actual tracks - here you can see a size comparison to the ZEUS' tracks

And here are the final casted tracks

If you're interested in the casting, maybe you should swing by my blog it could be possible you find some useful info on that topic

Here you can see that those bow Bolters do have quite a wide arc of fire

and the HERC will receive sponsons too
    Cheers

    Hey guys,
I had "some" spare time (my wife is out of town for 2 days ) and worked "some" more on the HERCULES.

I mounted the first cast pieces and added some track guides around the track skirts

Then I detailed the track skirts, adding access hatches and armour plates

I built up the rear section

and started on the actual turret

The commander still needs some GS around the neck, as I had to raise his head to meet the hand - most likely he'll get a white scarf

and here are the three together on the turret

If you like the update (and have a large bandwith), I strongly recommend to visit my blog, as todays post actually consists of 80+ images

I think I have a reasonable vocabulary but have run out of superlatives to describe your prolific output ages ago Klaus.

However, I suggest a new term for modelling awesomeness:
    Klausian .

For example, you see a really amazing piece of work and post, "That is amazing dude, looks really Klausian!"

followed your thread and again i am litteraly floared by your work...the amount of deatil and thought that you put into this is *insert suitable description* ! between all this beautiful and highly promising output my baffeld mind yet brought forth a quiestion: seeing how you built the turret i have to ask how and with which tool you cut the neat holes for your gunners and the commander...? i recently bought me a cylindric cutter but plastic card is no way possible to be cut with that lame tool...even thicker cardboard recently gave my reasons to pull off my hair if i still had it^^...so please help me out and bring enlightment^^

also totally love how you used the moskito netting for the airvents...and the selfmade grills... in your blog you show that the final version is the second attempt... this shows us two very important things...: firstly klaus is not unfailable (phew...i thought for some quite time that your modeling ranges to godlike proportions...i see now that you are able to man made stuff too^^) and secondly that one always should be ones hardest critics and thus never be afraid to ripp apart what is not deemed succesfull of a design... in the end the first arguzment sadly falls apart as the outcome again falls into godlicke modeling deeds...

but well some things better not change...^^

great work mate! keep on rocking!

    Thanks guys,
this feedback keeps the motor running
@DaminaOfTheWRAAAGH - well I hope that I can update this topic with some hopefully incredible and mind blowing Ork stuff later this week .... I know, I can really be a tease sometimes

@Vik - thanks for your praise (again), and I totally feel with you on these darned disk cutters. But really, I use the same ... and they are a pain in the rear end. By now my technique is to hold the cutter still and rotate the plasticard instead - most of the times I even rotate against the blunt end of the cutter - thus scratching rather than cutting. The reason for that is that sometimes, when cutting with the sharp edge, the blade kind of tilts and then it's spiraling and really messing up the cut.
So as said, I rotate the plasticard with very slight pressure against the cutter, and for 1mm plasticard it requires between 10 and 20 complete revolutions to do a good cut.

But at least I get nice round disks and holes *sigh*

Well, I continued with the HERCULES and added details to the turret

Then I added cargo baskets to the turret, added track covers, as well as I added a driver (for the sake of the diorama)

I also added details like headlights, skulls and smoke dischargers

Next on my list was an aerial recognition flag, which I created form tissue soaked in a water-PVA mix

And finally I began to add rivets

Here you can see the HERCULES on a sketchy-mock up of the diorama. As you can see it will be a very narrow cobblestone bridge with high side walls leading over a steep gorge with lava.

So what do you think? I hope you like it
As usual a lot more images and details can be found in my blog.
    Cheers
    Klaus

ouch that sounds like th same piece of "tool" i got too klaus, got the spiralling effect too... and even cardboard can cause that...hmmm with the blunt edge i never tried that...but will try it out, bet on that...

the new work on the herc looks very good! i especially like the idea behind the baskets! this not only gives the model a better ratio between hull and turret as you stated but add realism to the tank as well! will you add the in your blog mentioned boxes or will you do some of your own design?
as for the smoke launcher quiestion in your blog: i would leave the lower ones closed as is, can´t see a tank crew letting the barrels rust away happily when no need is for open ones...so in non combatant times i think they should stay closed...and for emergency uses the upper are after all open so makes double sense that way! seeing the outlines of your diorama scene i think this is a nice one as well! will you make the bridge stonelooking or metal looking?

also i like the hint of your already built models in the background of your blogpics (hints for all that still haven´t taken a peek there too^^) , is that some mechwarior mech there to be seen in that glass cabinet of yours?

cheers, and keep on being as motivated as you are!

    Hello guys,

    Waaaargh!
Now that the Line Breaker contest at WIP voting is over, I thought I'd share some more images of my little diorama.

    So here's the contest image

and another two of the overall battlefield:
    Front

Back (so one can see the pillbox)

This here is the first Knait, with da Seizmik 'ammer and shield:

The second Knait, with Axe and Sword (unfortunately I didn't finish the paintjob in time):

As you can see, both Knaits are manned by Grots:

And finally Da (green) Minnaaah - manned by two Nobs:

    I hope you like it
Pleas elet me know if you're interested in some WIP shots, then I'll update
    Cheers

yes please WIP shots... your green minna definatly has parts of that i would specially be interrested to see how you done them...namly the legs...as i plan in the nearer future to make a big walking tank...spidery of sorts on my own!

the green minnaahhh for those not fluent in german slang... thats what crooks call the police cars back in the days that german policecars where still green...(now they are boringly blue too...) that is a cool name for an orkish knight^^

also i love the grot inside joke... seeing your design now i never knew before that ther is a smile inside this slogan/icon^^

i really like the whole scene anbd the amount of detail is just ...klaus...er wanted to say fantastic^^...

just the green is not so much to my taste... but thats a personal issue...it is looking a bit like a rusted wartburg to me and this kind of puts me off^^ but the modeling part is much more important for me^^

    cheers vik

p.s....and did i see the big minna as a camo shot in your latest update in your cabinet?^^

p.s.s. i am too a member of bwc archive and read your recent post about stating interrest for your herc plans...well i am interrested^^....to say the least^^
