yeah,
Yeah,

++++++++++++

2016 Edit:
S6 engineering closed sad face
But these canals are now available from http://www.honeybeeworks.co.uk/
Huzzah! And the price is still amazing!

++++++++++++

I noticed s6 Engineering prototype thread in the dakka news and rumours page at the start of the month.
I loved their products, I ordered two sets of canals and two of the new style vehicle bridges and I recieved them today, only 6days later!
I had three broken bits, but nothing major, all easily fixed, and this is probabily more to do with royal mail.

That's alot of acrylic bits!

This is the new style bridge... it makes much more sense that the old steep ramped one.

Every single piece has a protective plastic that needs pulling off... this took about 90mins

the sides are held in place by a simple tab locking system

there are alot of tabs! these drive you a little mad pulling the backing plastic off!

Well that's all I got done today, I hope to find acrylic glue and and primer so that i can get going properly tomorrow.
I can't wait to take my dremel and paints to these...

s6 Canals... It's got what 40k craves!

Panic...

I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with these. Any plans for putting some designs under the "water" to give the illusion of depth or anything?

Hope you like them.

You can use superglue - it takes longer to bond acrylic than styrene so you need to leave it alone longer than you might expect.

Which parts were damaged?

Catyrpelius wrote:Awsome they should look really good with some paint on them.
indeed, i plan to go whole hog and use powders and everything... but they are quite basic shapes so i don't expect this to take more than a evening or two to paint.
SilverMK2 wrote:Any plans for putting some designs under the "water" to give the illusion of depth or anything?
I'm planning to print out some custom canal art for the underside... I'm still playing with some ideas in my head.

Scott-S6 wrote:Hope you like them. You can use superglue - it takes longer to bond acrylic than styrene so you need to leave it alone longer than you might expect.
I'm very happy with them, I've been playing around with them and my only problem so far is sometimes my setups means that the last piece overlaps the table edge... I think I may cut some of the straights to make shorter lengths to offer more freedom.
Also angles are an idea so the canal can be placed diagonally to the board too.

I read the working with acrylic bit on your website, I'll pick up some Plastikote tomorrow, I think after that I'll be using rough coat to texture it up a bit. I also plan to dremel a bit to to tarnish the clean surfaces.

Scott-S6 wrote:Which parts were damaged?
The Jiffy bag you packed the bits in should have protected them and is reflected by your low postage. I have no issue with a couple of damaged bits. Two of the corner edges and one of the foot bridge side pieces suffered clean snaps.
But these are easily fixed and won't be visable once they are glued together and won't affect the terrain at all.

Thanx for the quick delivery.

Don't know if this is anything like you want, but I fired up PS for a few minutes and used some of my many, many brush packs to flesh out your basic design (also added directional lighting effects).

The designs are the same size as the ones on your website, so I assume they are the correct size to fit the canals if you print them off "full size".

yeah,
but only the top one really look like they are underwater.

I think the photoshop project will come up with good results that can be used on lots of canal, so that all the parts match but without repetitions...
plus we won't have used GW IP and can make them available for others.

Although I'm going to be adding a boltgun or two down there later!
and maybe a licence plate, a bicycle and a sainsburys trolly.

Post by: Panic

yeah,
The Plan has changed some what!
Today while out doing so fault finding I spotted a dirty concrete drain with some stale old water in it.
Perfect!

I took many photos and from those got these eight sections.
I then used photoshop to clone bits in and out of each photo so that they all colour matched and that the ends would line up a little better.

SilverMK2: dude if your willing to I've uploaded these to the same folder as the others.
If you could add in the cloudy effect and some directional lighting, I think a dark fade at the top and a light fade at the bottom will make these look the bomb.
While I don't think the cracks will work on these you could give it a go?

I'm very confident these will look great under the green plastic.
Next I need to mash these images up to make the bends...

Wow that's some great source material.

I'd venture to suggest, though, that in addition to the effects you already listed, a slight ripple (nothing OTT or you can't see the details) might also help give it a "submerged" feel.

Just my 2 cents. I've been quite interested to see how this will turn out.

Ooh! This looks like a cool blog. It's also great because you're supporting s6engineering too. I'm liking that you're putting images under the green plastic parts - personally I think that an industrial/techno look would suit them best, rather than a rusty/neglected one. But I'll hold my breath on that opinion until they're put to the test - can't wait to see more!

Are the full size pipe pictures on your site? Also, if you can give me the dimensions of the canal I can put the correct size on the images so they will print off accurately without having any waste.

Edit: Just read back through the S6 thread and I think they are 10x28cm. Will sort out some long straight designs when I get home. Will also see if I can do the corner sections if you give me the dimensions.

SilverMK2 wrote:Are the full size pipe pictures on your site? Also, if you can give me the dimensions of the canal I can put the correct size on the images so they will print off accurately without having any waste.

yeah they are at http://www.cut-out-and-keep.com/Concrete/index
The visable clear areas are;

Straight sections
11¼" long and 2½" wide

Corner sections
4¾ long and 2½" wide

Although I think a extra ¼" each way will make make mounting them easier as they wont need to be perfectly lined up. also black backgrounds would mean that looking 'under the edge' wont show up the white background.

I Think the ratio of my drain photos is correct.
I just adjust the print size when printing.

SilverMK2 wrote:Will also see if I can do the corner sections if you give me the dimensions.

I'm going to make some corner designs today
(and I'll make designs to pre-empt a possible T section and Cross road! I can hope!)

I just noticed that they have the canal ends online now...
Extras already! s6 are on the ball!

I'll be wanting some of these.

Post by: Cosmic

Whoa, the canals turned out allot better than I anticipated - Good job! I wonder if s6 will ever do "reservoir" sections that the canals feed from. It would be great for objective games; imagine a Nurgly infected one - you'd have to cut off the canals before the taint of Nurgle is spread all throughout the city!

Anyway, you need some model ducks for this project, too. Perhaps you could use a giant rubber duck and spray it red, like a greater duck of Khorne or something.

That is just with some shadowing/lighting, no extra features. Let me know if you like it and I will add the effects on to the other images.

Will also do a few more designs for the concrete canal system, in case people want less grungy canals

Also, this image is about 3.8meg, so let me know if I can save it in a lower resolution

Wasn't sure about the plastic but works out pretty nice.. clean and crisp... although for any liquid like canal or sewage you cannot beat varnish

++ Panics - Honey Bee Works - Canal system ++ New stuff! ++ @ 2010/09/22 18:28:35

Post by: Panic

yeah,
I didn't get no warhams done at the week end, too much drinking.. :sadtimes:

But, I recieved a few extra bits from Scott s6 on Monday.
1x corner and 1x straight with bridge (these are convertion fodder to make a T junction)
2x canal ends.
Plus - I requested some offcuts of the green plastic from Scott with my last order, which he kindly provided.

The offcuts are for varnish and texture tests, I want to see if I can create a water surface effect. The plan is to spray GlossVarnish through FishNet stocking type material.
Although when I recieved the off cuts, I saw one could be used in the T-Junction converstion which spared the extra straight from the knife... for now!

And work was restarted on the canals again, I've now assembled all the grey sections.
I scuffed all the plastic both sides with a medium sandpaper. This is to allow the glue and paint to bond better with the plastic.

I used this plastic glue, Note this is not PolyCement the package describes it as being useful for hard plastics and has a picture of a kettle on it.
I've never heard of the brand 'bision' but the discription says bonds acrylics so seemd a better choice than super glue.
So far no issues with it. Seemed to be dry within 5 mins, pacakage says to leave over night.

(Scott, if your reading this, your probabilbly going to hate this bit, but when you release a modeling product...
Your going to have to accept that some people are going to bastardise it!...sorry)

Next I started dremeling the edges of the canals...
Here you can compare the damaged and worn canals next to the nice and new versions.

some more photos of the dremeled edges

I couldn't help but have a play around with my set to see what layouts I could Make.
2x starter sets
2x road bridges
2x canal ends
1x extra straight,
1x extra corner piece (converted to a T-junction)
totals £103 not bad!

(x1 canal end not used)

So 4 sections still need dremeling and then I can get on with undercoating and painting these badboys.

Love the damage. I like lots of weathering myself but I deliberately didn't put any on the pieces so that people could add their own. There's nothing worse than "random" effects that repeat over multiple pieces. I really wish that GW would remove the patchwork plates from their ork stuff (especially the battlewagon) and just give you a bunch of loose plates instead.

ETA, the special glue is not neccessary - superglue makes a decent bond and all the pieces are designed so that the bond isn't tested too hard. However a hard plastic glue or a proper acrylic solvent will weld them together really strongly (the acrylic solvent in particular is 100% permanent, be warned!)

Yeah,
" Rise! My thread for you have work to do! "

So I bought these canals in 2010 when they were made by S6 engineering.
If I remember correctly Life got busy for their manufacturer and S6 engineering was sadly closed.

I use these canals all the time!
Necromunda.
Maelstromes edge
Warhammer 40k

Lots of people ask me where I got these and I always had to say the company closed :(

However the canal designs (and the other s6 stuff like roads) were recently acquired by http://www.honeybeeworks.co.uk/
And the canals are now for sale again. And the price is still IMO amazing!

To make things even better Honey Bee Works have expanded the range!
I now have a waste tank, cross road and t junction canals on my work table getting ready for Paint!

Exciting times!

Glad to have you back Panic. Looks like a really good set of terrain, and as you say, can be used for so many potential game systems.

So what are you planning to paint first?

Yeah,
I'll probably do both junctions and the tank at the same time;
As its a small enough batch that needs painting

It's quite big.

And the walk way is moveable / removable.

I need a image for the underside of the waste tank.
Yesterday I spent 20 minutes taking photos of a concrete drain!
With and without cover..

I'll need to adjust the colours so it matches the old ones
And then try them out under the waster tank.

Panic.

I can only imagine the dust !

Seriously - hope you wore proper a respirator. Acrylic dust isn't toxic but it's still nasty to inhale.

been doing it the garden
My new Dremel is cordless

But, Sorry not much progress.
Some summer stuff all got in the way, and I was distracted by other hobby stuff!

Anyway the 3 new bridges; 2 small 1 big; are now fully destroyed!
They are wreck markers so I can make rules for destroying bridges.

The new canal bits are 90% built

More progress soon promise!

Yeah,
Cheers.

Got off my ass and did a bit of photoshop to make prints for the tank and crossroads
Had to use work printer,
As needed A3 for the waste tank it's so big

Quick cut out and test
Tomorrow I have 30mins worth of weathering and varnish on the edges.
Then glue the photos in. Done!

Although I have another tank photo which I printed about 15% bigger.
I may try out how the gunk tank looks with a bigger black hole
But yeah 98% done with these new bits.
