Talent, shmalent! They looked a lot sketchier before the pain job! They're kitbashed from Cadians with the guns and heads from WHFB Outriders. Some of the parts needed a little trimming to fit right, and at least one of the guns needed serious conversion to fit correctly. The Sergeant (blurry in pic - check my blog/gallery for more images) is pretty cool, the trumpet looks killer on a guard.

Yeah... I like Special Forces guys

Imperial guard conversions @ 2010/11/10 02:37:12

Post by: lalabox

God, I have so many. Mostly, small personalising touches for infantry (I have 68 guardsmen, and not one of them isn't specially posed or converted in some way), apart from for vehicles, where I go nuts.

This is my buggy and my truck. The buggy is a converted land speeder, which counts as a salamander scout vehicle. The truck is just a dave taylor truck, for which my only imput was tracing corel files out of pdf templates to laser cut it, then actually assembling the blasted thing.

Then there is my hydra, a mixture of a rhino and chimera, and ageis defence line.

Then, my heavily converted punisher. I was so proud of it I documented how to make it, here

My hellhound

And some actual guard:

hen, my primaris psycher/astropath, Master of the Fleet, and Master of the Ordinance.

Also, hits the spot, I would be very interested in buying some female heads if you get round to casting them.

Nice work in here. Tortured robot and Ailaros in particular, excellent stuff

Always happy for an excuse to show off

I've converted all of my force, but most of it is small infantry stuff and head swaps. The more serious stuff is below.
CCS with Carapace

Astropath

Hydra, Russ and Chimera:

Executioner/Punisher

Vendetta

Storm troopers

And my most heavily converted guys, the Stalker class rough riders (currently being painted)

Love the rough riders, very original idea. What are the guns?

Imperial guard conversions @ 2010/11/10 22:06:30

Post by: Flinty

Ta. The guns are Hasslefree CAD guns. Really nice pieces. they have 2 bullpup designs of which these are the smaller and hence these are counts as laspistols with the longer wearpons as lasguns.

Thanks

What Lalabox said. Its the most clothed Lahmian vampire I could find with the teeth filed down and a GS blindfold added. I also thought that the staff made more sense than the weird snakey thing on the other foot vampire. The skull staff was modded with wings from the old Guard vehicle accessory sprue.

@Darkchild - wow. Those are absolutely superb! Thanks for sharing. How long did it take to model and paint each guy?

Imperial guard conversions @ 2010/11/12 21:07:04

Post by: Darkchild

Thanks for the comments, i feel like im cheating by posting stuff thats so old but i thought it was worth contributing.

As for how long it took to do each mini, for the Afriels and special forces guys i would build one an evening, quite slowly. when the whole squad were done i would paint one every evening (i use modelling minis to relax so i do things very slowly).
In total i would say each trooper is about 6 hours work. most of that is waiting for green stuff to dry before starting the next part.

The assassin took considerably longer.

I'm a fan of your army, I've read most of your site, particularly enjoy your battle reports.

But my one complaint? Your Commissars shouldn't be the same ethnicity as your army; they're off-worlders ALWAYS.

Unless all three of them are coincidentally from an Arabic(?)-themed world?

Here are my Praetorian Special Forces (counts as stormies) and their transport. I used some resin helmets from TrooperPX, Kaybukia Pulse Rifles and for the turbo jets a GI Joe six sigma dragon hawk (it's missing a forgeworld punisher cannon under the nose) I've converted three valks for other storm trooper units for the apocalypse datasheet. Will have to do a bit of green stuffing, hand turning etc for the guns to fully fit all the poses but quite happy. Armour will be black, red shirts, blue legs.

But anyone spending time out in the hot Foleran sun would quickly tan to Foleran skin tone. I once read an interesting anecdote about how German soldiers in the DAK only needed to spend a few months out in the desert before the only way you could distinguish them from the Berber traders that would wander through camp was that they spoke German, and the Berbers didn't.

Plus, what's to say that there isn't a schola progenitum on Folera?

Also, I've got to do another shameless plug for my lord commissar. Made entirely out of GS, a bit of brass wire, and parts from the regular cadian infantry box.

And nice work to everyone else as well!

Yup, they are the ones I used. However I always buy the mixed head sprue version (HD.5). You get a bunch of heads with no helmets that I don't use, however you also get the awesome helmets with additional optics that I've used for my commanders, snipers, stormtroopers, etc.

@Orinoco - I didn't e-mail them and it is possible that you could get something organized if you wanted to buy an awful lot of them, but I never realized how many I would use before I started

To be honest though if you don't mind using the bare heads and are kitting out a whole army you should end up with enough.

I did these a while back, but here are 2 units of vets with shotguns, plus a hq command squad that travels around with them to make a sort of "vet platoon" kinda thing.

For the shotguns, I ordered the marine scout shotgun arms from battlewagon bitz. The arms didn't quite fit right so I had to do some filing and a little greenstuff at the joints. It's not perfect but they look fine on the table.

I also have a cadian Harker that I made with the scout heavy bolter, but I haven't gotten around to painting him yet...

There is so much awesome in this thread that it's hard to catch up with it all. Some of those I have seen since being on Dakka and was blown away to begin with, seeing EVERYTHING in one place is staggering.

Great idea, OP!

I'll add my own to the mix over the next couple days, subbed!

Here's my contribution. All of these were done in 1999 when I last played IG.

Top left- Commisar with combi-weapon and replaced Power Axe with Power Sword.

Top right- Needed a Tech Priest for a specific campaign scenario so I made one. Body is from Warzone or Mutant Chronicles, can't remember. Backpack is combined from CSM backpack and old Servitor arm. Bottom part of Force Halbred is missing, was converted from a Chaos Warrior axe and 2 Space Marine Power Axes. Master Craft Plamsa pistol is a slightly converted CSM Plasma Pistol.

Bottom left- "Drive me closer, I want to hit them with my sword!!!" ... except it fell off. Commisar leading a squadron of Chimeras. Or Leman Russ. He's completely removable.

Bottom right- Did someone say "firepower"? Catachan w/ Plasma Cannon in Hellhound turret. Is also completely removable so can be used on any IG tank I have.

And individual pics of each:

One thing I love about the army is how even if the regular men are plain looking, all it takes is a few extra bitz thrown in and you can easily make some awesome looking models. And thanks to all the wars we fight there's so much inspiration out there for different looks and themes. I think out of all the armies IG is the one thats the easiest and most fun to make unique.

Sure, here is the post I did when I was first making them with some in progress pics
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/252740.page

I basically took the IG lasgun arm with the shoulder stock, cut off the gun, and then attached the back end of the shotgun in it's place and covered the joint with a little greenstuff. I kept the scout hand on the bottom of the gun, and glued that to the guard left arm wrist spot. On some of the wrists I had to trim it off at an angle to get it to line up right but it wasn't too bad.

Heres where you can get the bitz from BW Bitz..
http://www.thewarstore.com/product33980.html

You can try other bitz sellers or find a friend that made scouts with bolters and he might have shotguns left over.

0k, I have an issue now..... major pissed off too.... 90% done with my IG Human Aux only to find out (my wife noticed right off) that the FW upgrade heads are actually smaller...This is from the Cadian upgrade pack with respirators… and if my wife noticed... this is yet another disappointment… and the final straw with me and FW.
Are the Pig Iron heads closer to the actual size GW heads?
I need something….so I can finish these which was my “goal” for today before sitting down and pigging out on Turkey….. so bummed.
If anyone wants these heads PM me, you can have them…they suck !!!

Post by: Flinty

The Pig Iron heads are a bit smaller than the GW heads as well. However GW heads are rather out of proportion and unless you have the models fixed right next to each other a bit of variation in size is probably not noticeable at distance. Add in a bit of paint and its hard to tell.

At least their add for those heads clearly states, fits 25-30MM miniatures.
My issue with the FW heads is you would think being FW & GW are pretty much one in the same that they would be a little closer in size.
I’m measuring a difference of 3/32 which in these little guys is a big difference.

FW is for 28mm though (just like the PI heads)

But FW is more inclined to 28mm Truescale than the supersized-almost 32mm 28mm heroic GW

As far as FW heads go, I ordered them once before, not with respirators, but honestly they seemed fine to me once on the model and painted. Mixed in with the other models, you don't notice at all. For pig iron heads, the only ones I ever liked were the full helmet ones like in the penal squad above, the others always looked kinda silly to me for some reason.

In all truth, its simply from the Grave Guard boxed set. No special work needed.
Only Veterans and Officers have them too

I love peoples faces when they play my army. Mostly because when they destroy a Chimera and see some skeletons pop out. It's just something so few would bother to convert.

the models are supposed to be filded on the bases that come with them. You don't get much more classic than those boys and so the standard 25mm base is fine

HW dudes need to be on 60mm bases now.

That said, there is absolutely nothing stopping you getting a 60mm base, flocking it, and then just placing your 20mm-based models on it.

Completely correct.
Really gave off the Leader/Undead-vibe I wanted.

The Scythe usually counts as a Power Fist in games, elevated base shows prominence and the act of raising more skeleton-soldiers.

I use the rest of the Empire Wizard kit in my list, noticeably (as posted) for advisers.

Heh, well you asked. The feet are from Crisis suits, the backpacks are Devastator plasma cannon bits, the leg extensions use part of Tau landing gear, the exoskeleton legs are formed from Guard smoke launchers, The assualt launchers are SM smoke launchers, the leg hydraulics use a bit of wire and Tau vehicle burst cannon barrels, The melta guns are a combination of Tau fusion blaster and Guard flamers, and finally the guys themselves are Cadians with pig iron head swaps and Hasslefree weaponry. Add GS to taste and shake well

Seconded. The individual models can look like almost anything, but some nice simple solid blocks of colour will help tie together a whole army. Models are quite small so most of an army will be viewed from further away than individual details could be identified at.

Big coat for Sergeant Hardass. I took this picture before putting the gun on because it gives a better idea. He didn't lose his hands in battle. His coat folds over itself at the back too. It isn't missing a corner.

I'm quite new to converting but here are a few kit bashes i threw together that came out looking ok...

Kasarkin Sargent with his weapons swapped and a blurry image of a commissar that I changed to have a lightening claw and plasma pistol

I hated the fact that rough riders used horses so I put them on bikes

And some objectives or life tokens I made from left over bits

edit: sorry about the image size dont quite know how to make them smaller

Hey guys,

New poster here but I thought I would share a couple of my conversions with you. I am trying to get some photo's of the rest of my stuff. I love converting uard makes the Kashlenn 705th feel a lot more personal

Here we have a My lord Commissar with his two gun blades and Guardsman Karve who is my version of Mabo.

Are those power bayonets on two pistols?!

Imperial guard conversions @ 2011/01/03 09:12:49

Post by: Commissar_Drez

Yes mate, well a bit longer than bayonets I used to be into Final Fantasy 8 and loved the gunblades. I like to think of my commissar as running in blasting with his hell pistols and then cutting down anything left standing. shamefully its only fluff and cant be used as rules in-game but the idea is there

And Osiskars - your diorama is possibly the best snow scene I've ever seen done on 28mm scale. Serious kudos!

(I do kind of wish you'd left out the pathfinder though - you've done so well showing the guard fighting the cold, I feel like they should be the focus! Just an opinion though, feel free to ignore )

It is hard to follow up that sweet Cadian snow diorama, but here are some shotgun veterans I converted for my ever expanding Praetorian Guard army.

Since these photos were taken I have added some putty to the lasgun power packs to make them look less like batteries and more like ammo clips capable of holding shotgun shells.

The kilted legs were taken from Victoria Lamb's conversion kit, and the heads are from Secret Weapon. Everything else was pure Cadian Shock Troop and Command Squad kits. The barrels of the shotgun were made from flamer nozzel heads cut and filed down to fit on the end of a standard lasgun. I liked the end result as it resembled a heat shield for an automatic shotgun.

Heres a few examples of my Tallarn/desert dudes. I stalled out on the project when the shoulder pads became tedious- verrrry tedious. So I got distracted by warmachine stuff lol

But I found a simple and cheap solution that should get this project back on track in the next couple of months. In the mean time heres a quick shot of a few of the finished conversions (and yes- I know 3 of them are on square bases- its temporary til I make my resin bases :p )

About 40 or 50 of these guys combined with the 70 or 80 old lead guys I have should make for some scary blobs lol

I'd like to submit my humble conversions. I received about a platoon of ig in this black and white scheme from a trade a while back, and I ended up trading most away, except for the few guys missing arms and heads. I said to myself, why don't I fix em up and convert them. So here is a random squad of misfit ig (the chainsword bayonets were his idea, however)

I didn't spend much time adding details as you can see. I'm just glad I had loads of excess tau heads and chaos marauder arms from some of my failed attempts at making an army long ago

Imperial guard conversions @ 2011/05/09 21:31:58

Post by: Ribon Fox

The glass is a see threw chrismass ball ball

(spelling?), i got a pack of six of the things, sadly only two were clear, I cracked the first one trying to cut it with a micro saw, so used a soldering iron to heat cut it as the stuff is so thin

nice idea with the christmas ball...for a moment i thought this was from a bigger plastic bottle... hmm heat cutting... this at least i am million miles away from talent and hardeware wise^^ too bad the first one broke in... would have been nice to see more of these count as valks like in a scene form apocalypse now flying over the seaside...raining death over heretics^^

Here are some of my Elysian. Not painting the army atm as I have way to much to do.
But during summer I hope I can paint more of them.

Not much of conversion here really, except for my own version of Sergeant Harker for the Elysians.
Oh bare in mind that the bases are not done yet. I was waiting for my grass tufts to arrive.

First Unit up is a Veteran Squad with a mix of weapons. Plasaguns, missile launcher, and harker.

Close up on Harker

And finally my Elysian Storm troopers, made from Lascutter team.

The metal cable is guitar string - I believe it is 32ga. And I have done press mounding of them to build up 2 or 3 squads. However, I have decided to sell my IG so there will only ever be 2 squads of these guys

I would have cast them if I was doing an entire army though.

I tried on a couple, but they are way to flimsy as they are true not heroic scale. Don't worry though, you won't be able to see them when I am done.

Though. When I am done is a good question, as I have successfully painted 1 model this year.

Just a few things out of my guard army. Not realy into converting alot, however, looking for older models are a fun way to make my army different from the other IG. You can see the other project at the moment, my daughters Ork army. She is ten and wanted to get into it.

Forgot I hadn't uploaded the rest of my retro Cadian squad, some weapons updated rather than converted!

Was actually surprised how poorly these scored in the Gallery considering they are classics!

Not sure if I've posted this in here but never hurts to do so
The MK4 Superheavy Battle Sentinel The "Furious Angel".

Unlike her little brothers the MK1's the MK4 has a fully interchangerble turret that be ether the st LRBT, the Extermiator, the Vanquisher, the Punisher. OR it will be once I get round to making the guns and there turret units

Thanks. My next big plan is to get some more sentinels and being inspired by Mech Commander 2 will be making them into Fire Ants (counts as Hell Hounds)

@ Viktor Von Domm

Thanks! they are actually plasticard and green stuff on a dark eldar chassis with bras and green stuff to make the lance with the annoying feet-stuck-together legs from the Cadian IG cut up and green stuffed into a better position.

Post in the painting and modelling section when you do this, this mech is awesome. do you have any mechs you've built with defiler scale legs/arms? really cool work here, btw.
