**EDIT**

This is my new and improved 40k thread which started out as just my IG but will now include my efforts to build my Marines an entire Battle Company. Marines start on p19, read on for hot Guard action and models like these...

Eventually, or skip to the power armoured section (p19 onwards) for the new updates and stuff like this..

Back IG around p28 and then back to SM to finish the Company.

Hope you enjoy, please do comment if you like what you see..thanks

Hi There!

I've been wanting to BLOG my Guard and I finally have a camera which is just good enough to allow me to do so. Here are my burgeoning Guard. They are the 15th Macragge PDF regiment, 'Interior Guard' to some perhaps.

I wanted an Imperial Guard army that was only simply equipped and had the basic versions of gear and vehicles. I wanted to be able to field large amounts of troopers with big tanks in support, not a MechVet/elite drop troop aircav type of thing. Old school guard. I also am primarily a marine player (sorry) and wanted these guys to compliment my Ultras (can be seen in action Here) and to give me a very different army to play with.

I have nearly finished about 1.5k and will post it up as I can take photos over the next few weeks. I mainly take photos when I'm in Cut & Thrust FLGS in Bristol as Alex has nice angle poise daylight bulbs. I aim to do regular updates, especially to catch up to where I am in painting and then move to more WiP stuff. I aim to get to about 2.5k all painted and field them with 2.5 of my marines and ally with 5k of more guard and take on Alex's entire 10k of Nids....we hope to play this mega game some time next year and to report it on Dakka!

I have 'speed painted' these guys to get them done quickly, my marines get the good stuff, the guard make do (as always..). Heros and command squads get more time (such as my commissar for instance) as do the vehicles. I paint primarily to play the game not as purely display pieces.

Here is my first platoon (numbered 5):

They tend to Blob up around my commissar and FRFSRF a lot.

Commisar B'stard

Command Platoon (further pics of all these guys in the gallery)

Squad one

Pretty basic load outs, 2 ACs and 2 GLs in the squads, PCs get 2 GLs and a bolt pistol (if they have been very good maybe a power weapon). The medic in the PCs is never used as one anymore, this unit were done in the dying days of the last codex, back when they were worth getting. This keeps the unit cheap in dollarpounds and points both of which are an objective.

The Lieutenant is a very old model cookies if you can spot it under the conversion.

That will do for now, more to follow!

C&C welcomed!

DUTY AND HONOUR (and of course Dakka)

Wow those are really cool and well done too.

Keep up with the work as I would love to see even more of these guys.

The only thing that I see is a problem is the right shoulder pad as it seems weird to do a blue trim on one but not both.

Thanks for your quick comments!
I do like it's asymmetry, I was wondering what area to do blue as I wanted part of them in the chapter colour, but I didn't want to see them running round in blue jumpsuits. I settled on the one shoulder pad (as helmets would be too UN) I'm probably used to it now.

What I would do is either do the whole right shoulder pad as blue with a lighter blue trim or if you're up to the challenge is to file off the eagel on the flak armor and to paint the left breast plate armor blue with the white omega symbol on it. I think that would look really sweet for a Macragge PDF.

The whole right shoulder pad is blue, but my Pic is a little dark, the lighter blue is a highlight. My Ultras have a dark blue look as I dislike the powdery blue they sometimes end up, there's a link to a batrep they fight in in my 1st post. It would be ace to do the chest eagle filing but against the idea of them being a quick (relatively) army to do and I might start killing people if I have to file (well cut) off 120 odd eagles....and then paint the omega in a difficult to reach area,

Randy's Ultramarines & Macragge PDF (IG) First 3 Converted Bladeguard Completed! @ 2010/11/26 21:21:59

Post by: ishanmaster

Then you're using really really dark blue. Are you using a midnight or a regal blue for the right shoulder pad? If so I would do a mix of 4/5 blue and 1/5 white just to allow the blue to show a little more.

The filing isn't really that bad, I had a renegade IG army a year or two ago were I filed off about 100 eagels. You can do about 1 eagel every 30 seconds. Also the omega symbol isn't bad if you create a stencil for it. That would actually be rather quick.

Thanks a lot everyone

@ishanmaster

Yes I use regal with a black wash and then a single stripe of ultramarine to highlight, I use midnight to base my marines. If I were to do them again I think I would seriously consider what you suggested, I hadn't thought of a stencil (nor used one before actually). The idea of retconning everyone gives me the screaming heebie-jeebies however...

I'll try to post and annotate my heavy weapon teams this weekend and then do the CCS (which is where my Std Bearer is from {1st image}).

Aliaricthenerd wrote:Cool. How did you paint the cloth?

Assuming you mean the grey jumpsuits, I just paint them codex grey and ink black (the old ink) and then dry brush back with codex. For important people I paint on the highlights after a minimal drybrush and then do another layer or two with increasing amounts of fortress grey added. I have just swapped to Vallejo Game colour for the main grey as it's better at coverage, however it doesn't taste as nice.....

Hiya

Here are my first two weapon batteries.

The loader is shouting updated targeting info to the firer who is adjusting the 'aim'.

These guys are just putting down fire, ignore the 'battle damage' I'll fix that at some point.

The battery leader has received worrying news on the comnet and is bollocking the loader for shelling friendlies, the loader is replying "What does blue on blue mean?".

Group shot. I really like mortars, they are really 'guardy' to me. I like that only they have them, (i.e. Marines etc don't) and I have used weapons like that for my guard (GLs, ACs etc) all the way through to further differentiate them from my marines. This was the first weapon battery I put together. I really like the modelling opportunities offered by the 60mm bases and wanted them to look like they were in a hastily prepared firing position. The posts are just matchsticks and the mud polyfiller.

I managed to make 9 heavy weapon teams from one box (take that GW!) and have used two of the lascannons to replace 'Russ ones.
here is the next unit:

I really like the running DKoK weapon teams and wanted this team to look as though they were sprinting to cover. Note the marine rocket ammo as I think the guard rockets look more like HKs or torpeados.

Firer: "Did I hit it this time?"
Loader: ".........."
Note green stuff goggles.

Loader: "Look I know your trying and that's what really matters, just take your time. Try again"

Whole battery. Being more recently painted these guys look a bit nicer. As a more point intensive unit they have occupied hard cover which is mainly made out of plastic Epic ruins with the fronts polyfillered. I have added all sorts of crap to create rubble around them, I now have a rubble box to build up a collection for this kind of basing.

That will do for now. I'll try to post up the pics for my CCS soon and get the next platoon (my 'assault' platoon!) and maybe some armour photographed next week.

I hope you like my 'Big' platoon, it had another AC/GL infantry squad too but that was dropped from my 'All Comers' army list in favour of a second chimera. That squad will now from part of my 3rd (WiP) platoon, neccessary to form a 'Shield Company' for APOCALYPSE! Which is an awesome formation and really characterful I think.

See you on the battlefield or if your a Bristolian maybe Tesco's.....

Yo

Here is the original model that my 1st platoon's lieutenant is based on, the page is from the old Blue Citadel calogue. A range of models used a lot with the pre curser game of Necromunda, Confrontation.

I've added a (bad) GS cap and standard cadian arms, the blade is a scout 'knife'. the hilt of his dagger is the only gold area in all my infantry platoons. I wanted gold to look really special and unusual in this army.

Here is some pics of my CCS.

My Captain, Captain Sharpe. Another Rogue Trader era model. Added Cadian arms, frag granade. The binoc holding hand is GS as is the medal. I have added double stripes to his sleave, in the same place as the Sergeants have them as standard. My Lieutenants have single stripes.

My favourite guardsmen so far. Never does anything in games, just looks cool. I added the hat (forage cap?) and was going for something like this:

Don't think I really managed it, however still looks good. I added stripes to his sleave and did an extra one too as I think of him as a Staff Sarge or RSM.

Here is my only plasma gun so far. I think these weapons would be in short supply for spoddy garrison troops, so only my CCS gets one. I wanted to make is look unweildy and difficult for a single trooper to operate. The vox helmet makes a passable 'targety' helmet I think. The model is missing a power cable, I need to get hold off the right bit of guitar wire, what string do people normally use?

The standard bearer has had a banner swap, I put an extra GS purity seal on the back to help it stay on. I cut/filed the skull out of the middle of the banner and replaced it with a painted U symbol. The scrolls bear the regiments motto as well as a battle honour won in the first tyrannic war.

My version of the Master of Ordnance. I tried to do the same style of hat cap thingy as Scarface, also didn't quite get it. Both arms are heavily GSed and one hand is entiely GS the other about half. I wanted it to look as if he was turning away from his comlink to survey his fall of shot. The base unit of the comlink is the top half of a vox with GS receiver bits to replace handset onto. I added a basic bionic eye and strip under his chest eagle. The fluff mentions servitor skulls helping them out and I liked that idea and so added one. I really like big artillery but think they should be off board really, a MoO is great as for only 30 points you get a (drunk) basilisk, Ace! Still I find him very effective and have scored a reasonable amount of direct hits.

Group shot.

I'll do some more pics this week, I hope to have a biggish game on Friday, a farewell MeanGreenStompa battle. We'll hopefully manage some pics and do a BatRep, I'll link to it here provided we manage it all!

C&C welcome.

Stay Classy Dakka

Hiya

I just typed out 90% of this update only to accidentally close the browser page.......

Well the farewell MeanGreenStompa game didn't happen, he and his teammate called in sick (read terrified) but I did have my first 2k game which was great fun. However we took no pics so no BatRep (good! I lost ).

Anyhoo

This is my 2nd or 'Assault Platoon' (numbered 4).
"Why are they called an assault platoon?" I'm asked.
"Because they have bayonets" I reply.
"What do bayonets do in game?"
"Nothing" I say.

Family photo. This units job is to wait in reserve and try to turn up in time to flamer whoever it is who just wiped out 1st Platoon in an assault....

Here we see Lieutenant 'Insert name here'. The ubiquitous tank commanders head, a GS (and slightly bad, this was a while ago) breastplate and the mandatory officiers boltpistol. BPs are like special weapons in a guard army anyway. The powerfist is a RTB01 fist I had lying around, my 3rd platoon LT is getting one as well, I'm not sold on the current guard fists.

Sergeant. All my command squads have a NCO supporting the CO, in 1st Platoon we have Sergeant Eldar Head. I tried to contrast the 2 squads, I wanted 1st PCS to be aloof and at ease and 2nd PCS to be tough and action posed.

Specials. I use a slightly trimmed vox head for all my flamers. I wouldn't want to breathe that stuff in....

Medic. I don't use him as one but like the idea of platoons having them. He will be a vox caster in APOC but in normal games just a LP&CCW bullet catcher. The 'med kit' is a trimmed down vox set.

Squad one.

Squad two. Note rare trooper conversion in pic 2, he's supposed to be biting the pin out of a frag.

Both units just have flamers (oh and bayonets). I think pose is vitally important in modelling and really like how characterful the basic cadians can be. Squad ones Sgt. is a favourite. All my Sarges have white stripes on their helmets as a nod towards Ultra's veteran white helmets. This can also be read as whiteshields however.......some people have said "Why are all your squads in your Adobe army led by consripts?". My response is to leave the room at this point. And to cry. Naked. I'll stop now.

Hope you like them all. I will post up some more stuff soon..

C&C welcome

S'up

Here's the first pics of something with an armour value. It's not the first vehicle I did but I've yet to get pics of my Russ squadron.

My lovely scout sentinal. Base is a mix of any old crap I had lying around and a lot of Polyfilla. I went for a 'running' pose, as if it's trying to close distance to employ it's heavy flamer.

I added a HK missile as I like the idea of scouting in with a few of these and popping off inaccurate and expensive one shot weapons at rear/side armour of stuff. I would happily pay 10 pts to kill a marine (pref a Death Comapany member) too. Note the space under the canopy, I name all my vehicles and currently am at a loss of what to go for. I want something that would suit a group of 3 (ie 3 musketeers etc).
Any suggestions very welcome.

I added a gasmask thing off the command sprue to the pilot, I made GS goggles too (because I dropped the head it came with which did that dissappear trick tiny pieces of plastic love to do).

Shazam!
Magically it's weaponless! This was my first go with magnets. I cut off the hole for the weapon mount and replaced it with a magnet, all the weapons have the pin removed and bits of staple greenstuffed into place. It mostly works, I will need to be more careful mounting the staple bits next time to ensure they hold the weapons straighter. I have also put a magnet behind the box that I have GS'ed the HK to incase I don't have the 10pts to waste. I have also done an AC and MultiLazor but unfortunately they weren't with me at time of photographing.

I have recently got a 2nd Sentinal and plan to eventually get 3 (total) of the killer robot chickens as I think they're ace.

I'll post up some more pics soon and hopefully take some more tomorow.

Feel free to tell me what you think and hope to see you on the battlefield!

Ahh thanks guys.

Yeah I much prefer the SM HKs, they seem more realistic or something. I really don't like the new 'rocket on a stick' ones. Yeah I'll try to photograph my armour today, only 2 of the Russ are painted mind.

Yes I like the flexibility magnatised weapons gives you. I have a 2nd un painted sentinal which will get a heavier spread LC, AC and ML. I plan to convert the ML from half of a terminator cyclone I have spare, I much prefer it to the long box assembly they come with.

You've got a really characterful bunch of guardsmen. I like that they're so closely tied to the marines like that. I actually have a chapter of marines whose fluff I've been working on in my head that work closely with the guard, as well as with the ad mech.
Stand out has to be the sculpted breastplate on the Lt with the engraved "U".

Thanks I was aimimg for character over most other concerns (like tabletop effectiveness!). I really like the idea of inter-connectedness of imperial armies and really look forward to fielding both my Marines and Guard at the same time. I'll do a blog for my marines when I get my IG to a good place. I really like your scratch builds, reminiscent of Brian Froud's stuff. And who doesn't like Labyrinth?

Right then for Flinty..

Here's 'Old Reliable', a knackered old museum piece of a Russ. You can see where the sponsons were removed, I like the damage the ploy has done to the surface and made no attempts to hide or clean it. Makes it look as though it's been down gunned and maybe mothballed somewhere only to be pressed into service as a stop gap 200 years ago or something.

The G.R. and scythe is a reference to the squadrons name. Yes it does say war on the side, why? just because.

Unofficial unit motto.

Spare track has been welded over damage.

This was my first vehicle for this army and I was pleased with the basic look, a bit of a proof of concept type thing. It was actually quite quick to do as the techniques are basically limited to drybrushing. I wanted to keep to the quick and easy ideal for the vehicles too.

The 'Aleksander', squadron leader. 2nd vehicle to be painted for this army.

I replaced the old comedy lascannon with a weapon team one. Extra track as armour.

BAttLE DamAGE!!1111!! with jury rigged repair.

Unofficial unit motto again.

Squadron markings. I wanted to do something akin to a bomber's nose art for the tank squardron and came up with this.

Tank commander. Theres the little targety thing off the SM HK which is to help denote the command status. I like to think the open hatch is the equivalent of a marine sergeant having his helmet off!

I have recently requisitioned another Russ (off ebay!). I'll give that one another LC and (shock horror) HB sponsons (partly because they wont come off!). I generally don't bother with them as I prefer to keep moving, if only an inch etc to make the tank harder to hit in CC. All 3 will weigh in at 500pts (525 with APOC formation) which is a lot but still cheap compared to totally pimped out Russes.

Right that will do, let me know what you think..

TTFN

Clotho, Lachesis and Athropos

That's something I did think of already but I'm not sure that what I'm going to go with yet.

Here's some more IG goodness.

I have had these puppies sat around for about 10+ years, I was given them back then and they just collected dust until I started this army. They are the Rogue Trader era models and quite sweet really. I just wanted them done when I painted them (back near the start of the whole army) and finished them in an afternoon. I just painted them entirely in dark angel green and then painted interlocking triangles over everything. Black ink wash and a few details later and done. I actually have 6 but they weren't all with me at the time.

They do have the honour of being the only IG I have done to have painted eyes. I need to make a little medal for one of these guys as they killed a 'stealer in HtH, a pretty mean feat anyway but he was under the influence of 'Paroxysm' at time!

Just a quick update for now, but I will do my mechanised veterans 'the Remnants' soon.

"Hello old friend(s)"

Here are my veterans, the 'Remnants'. I wanted them to look like the rag-tag survivors of other platoons which have snuffed it or 'retired' in IG parlance. To this end they all have various squad numbers on their shoulder pads, something that doesn't come off terribly well in these photos.

The squad are generally painted to a higher standard as befits their status. They do have a Chimera too but I need to upload the photos for this still.

Shouty Sarge. He used to be in a PCS but the new book led to him being promoted (?) to squad leader of these guys, so is an older job. He's got a silly strap to hold his helmet as it covers the gaping hole under his armpit. He has a folding stock for his BP too (not well photographed, or made to be frank). I scarified his face for instant kudos (and it impresses the chicks).

Hurt people, the new command sprue has some lovely characterful stuff on it, like these bandaged bits. The sling armed guy has a carbine lasgun. I put a few of these in the squad to be different and to denote their mech status. The meltagunner has a more portable side gripped type as opposed to the bulky back pack version the CCS has.

This meltagunner has the same type of gun, it's been fitted with a strap however, I carefully cut out the flamer and managed to fit the melta in. He also has a drop down thingy over his eye, the command sprue includes one (which the other MG has) and this one is GS. The lasgun has been modified to have an extended front sight and fire selectors. Both (and indeed most of the squad) have small metal disks applied as medals/battle honours. There's a reference to this in the original IG codex and I like the idea.

Bayonetty guys. I wanted a lot of running legs in this squad so they looked all actiony. More modified guns. All members of the vets have a white bandanna tied on their arms to denote the veteran-nuss, like 'chosen men' or something.

Carbiners, one with modified front scope. All these guys are loaded with grenades and knives cos they is well ard.

More to follow......

'What are you some kind of comedian?'

The final bloke from my squad, subtle reference to a certain popular comic which I believe is now a major motion picture. Again he has a smaller type of special weapon, unlike the big backpack version you get on the cadian sprues. Again great bits off the command sprue, this time combined with a spare marine flamer and a reasonable amount of GS to make it all stick together.

I will get the Chimera pics online soon, please comment on anything you like.

Thanks you all for your kind words, as to hand positions it's just weapon/hand swaps. I use GS to change angles to create more movement or character, but only the CCS got wholy built components. The Shouty Sarge in the above Veterans for instance has his chainsword in a 'grenade throwing' arm and is holding it with a 'laspistol' fist, the guard snapped off and I had to build one out of GS, if you look closely the whole hand area is a bit shonkey. The BP arm is a Sarge's chainsword arm, swapping out the hand and adding a laspistol gves a nice 'shooting' pose and it still has the nice Sargeant's stripes. Nothing too extreme really.

Yo

I finally got round to adding this, and so for those of you who haven't already found this pics in the gallery here is my Vets ride:

This is the most recently painted vehicle in my force. Again pretty much speed painted but with a bit more detailing.

She's called Cerebus as it follows the slight classical theme I have in naming, when veiwed from the front the 3 little red 'lights' are like the 3 heads of Cerebus. It's also protective like him and it also has the word 'bus' in it......sorry.

Squad name scrawled on the side. I like adding this kind of graffitti that would be below my marines.

More SM HKs. I think they look nicer than IG. There is some slight converting here, GS brackets are added. and on the other side there is a trimmed down SM bolter scope which is acting a laser pointer to target the HK.

The big targety doobury on the left of the HB barrel is obviously the actual targety bit off the HK.

At the rear on the vehicle bolted to the top of the track guards is a spare HK which could be man handled into the turret bracket (between engagements) as a reload. As it's my vets ride its got loads of stowage and minor modifications.

Close up of stowage and Battle Honour won in the 1st Tyrannic War.

That's all for now, hope you like the space car. I have about caught up to where I am with collecting and painting and so the next stuff will be more WiP. I am about half way through my 3rd Platoon (more AC/GL guys) and will try to get some pics done soon. I expect my IG painting to start slowing a bit as I've just got a Hundred Years War English army for WAB (no really!) and have started doing stuff for them (I might even start a BLOG). I do hope to play a big(ish) APOC game in March and may be motivated to paint the remainder of that platoon and possibly even my 3rd Russ (which is fight BTW). Maybe even do a BatRep.

Thank you for all your comments and please continue leaving them. It's surprisingly motivating actually so you'll be helping me to paint!!

Fething chimeraes, you wait all fething day in the rain, then 3 come along at once...

I really like the clawed battle damage, just under the name.

As with so many things we see photographed on the site, the close up shots don't do the camo scheme the justice it deserves. It looks far far better on the battlefield!

Love the lense effect on the front viewplate, subtle but segsah.

My best to the wife n kids btw!

Segsah?

I thought this might be the latest cool kids slang but Urban Dictionary says no. I'll assume it's a compliment, possibly erroneously.

Thanks dude, these guys have been on the back burner for a while. I have half finished my 3rd Platoons command squad and nearly got enough Cadians to build the last Infantry squad for it. I'll probably be motivated to finish them off then as it will be a whole company (Bwa HA haHA) and I'll try to do a nice group photo. I would like to get another Commissar too but don't like many of the models....

In the meantime I have nearly done 94 1:72 scale Medieval blokes!

I really like the misses's Nids, be nice to see your multiple battlewagons up on your blog too if you can get the camera time....

Love to all across the pond

*Blows dust off thread*

Hiya

I've actually done some more work on this army again!

Here is my 3rd Platoons HQ

Here we can see my standard medic build, check the RTB01 knife.

Cool sarge guy..

Junior officer No.3, he's got a RTB01 powerfist like the other (2nd Platoon) officer. The torso is a Valkyrie one to keep up the 'all officers in breatplates' theme and theres GS all over the place to make all the bits fit nicely.

Flamer and Melta, pretty standard, added goggles onto Melta gunner to differentiate this one from the same model in 2nd Platoon HQ (which this unit is equipped the same as).

I hope to get these guys and my new Chimera (pics to follow) done by Weds (massively optimistic) as I plan to have a big game then which I want to do a batrep for....

See y'all soon!

Here is my new aquisition, my HQ's Chimera, it will be called 'Argo'. It's the new version of the kit.

Slimmer than the old version for easier parking...old style smoke launcher as they are cooler..

As it's the GT version, there's all the Stubber ammo you could eat..

Extended Flamer ammo too..

Picnic blanket, this is actually from a FoW kit but I think it works...

Satellite uplink for all the major sporting events...the mount for this is a FoW turret ring..

I'll add some painted pics soon too, let me know what you think..

Finished!

Duty and Honour, the regiments motto.

Tyrannic war battle honour won by the regiment.

DANGER flammable!

Stubber gunner.

The general finish is cleaner and much less damaged to contrast with the Vets' heavily knackered and modified one. I might go back and do some more minor detailing, I'm also tempted to do a penant....

Well I'm off to play a game, let me know what you think.

Some Imperial Guard rock fans humour..

Unit name and insignia, all in keeping with it's 2 brothers, I'll post a family picture or 2 later.

Thanks as always Cosmic, you're marines are looking awesome, I love the painting on the guardsman too even though the green and orange is too bright for my tastes!

Thanks too Spoonpoodle, I'm honoured to have your 1st post!

I decided to add a logo to the 'bumper' of the Dauntless, just because..

Here is the plan of the Commissar I am converting, the bluetack is being his cap and high collar as per the other Commissar, the BP will have a strap I think...

Here we see him basically held together prior to any real sculpting. His torso and arms have been spaced slightly to increase his stature. Most parts are basic guard items but the head is from the 'Masters of the Universe I mean Chapter' set. I've shaved off the shoulder pads and chest logo.

Will post more soon!

TTFN

Flourescent yes, awesomely excuted yes, now just paint another hundred like that........

Next stages of GS'ing, the belt over the torso is quite thick to hide the spacing, added a skull belt buckle to up the skull count. Covered up the removed chest aquila with a VC medal. The strips under the belt are the pocket tops of his flasher's mac, as per the other commissar model. I added a sleave cuff to match the other arm.

On to add the cap and a few other minor details...in 2 minds about the shoulder strap and BP what do you all think?

Thanks!

That's an interesting idea, I hadn't planned anything like that and I generally don't use SC but I do like the idea. I have the Rogue Trader era Inquisitor in terminator armour who I am planning to add to this army as either a Commissar Lord in normal games or a Ordos Xenos guy in APOC but he would work as Strakan too! Otherwise I could use an existing marine HQ or Vet sarg maybe..

More Commy work. I've added the giant grimdark cap, didn't manage to get the tiny logos to fit on it that well however. Some other bits of tidying up work too, still can't decide whether to add the bolt pistol or not....

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

This is very nice. I think the blue/gray/white scheme works really well and actually think that putting blue on both shoulders would look strange.

Its awesome what simple repositioning and small extra details does to making an army unique. The heavy wpns teams look great. I also like the idea of using gold only on the officers. makes a big difference.

Good work!

I was reading the IG Codex idly in the bath and noticed: "Armed with the lasgun, the Guardsman forms the very backbone of the Imperium" (paraphrased) which is what I like about the IG. "Armed with the meltagun, the Chimera mounted Veteran forms the very backbone of the Imperium" seems less heroic somehow......

First stage of strapping..Added tiny parts of shirt/cravat peeping out at collar too. I used the straps off of the standard flamers as thry are plentiful and quite effective. Making straps from scratch out of GS can be a bit of a ballache..

Strapping complete!, I'll tidy up the contact points to the pistol once the GS has gone off. I added a buckle too.

Here he is next to his colleague. I need to do some minor trimming but otherwise he's pretty much built, now all I have to do is paint him................bah..

"Magnets?!, how the feth do they work?"

Sorry for the long delays but I think I managed to put myself off modelling spending so long sculpting that Commissar. I couldn't go near him for ages after and when I could think about it again I felt more inspired to work on other stuff. I have also had a lot on IRL, Illness, away, busy, Civ4 etc.......

Running as a parralel project to the old Commissar I built an armoured/unarmoured sentinal I requistitioned (off eBay). It was in very good nick but positioned a bit odd so I had to snap an ankle to reposition it. I will use it as both classes of sentinal depending on the requirements of the day and it will be the squadron leader.

Stuck together and with pollyfilla textured base. Used another SM HK, this one isn't magnetised however.

Base showing both feet pinned and counterweight as this is the old hybrid kit.

Magnetic weapon mount, whilst built as a Lascannon carrier (hence powerpacks) it can now carry anything. There is a little 'tooth' of GS below the powerpack which slots into the LC to prevent 'Droopy Gun Syndrome' or DGS. Many wargamers have suffered from DGS at some time in their lives (usually after experimenting with magnets) but obviously I never have.

Shazzam, now armed with a missile launcher! I didn't like the ML that comes with the seninal kit and a Land speeder one didn't look right either. I had a half Cyclone lying around from my 2nd Termy squad and that looked right (to me).

Both of them again armed with new weapons.

More to follow soon!

I've started painting the Commy but have stalled again, I got a new box of Cadians to finish off the company which is actually quite exciting..

Will hopefully get some more done soon...

Man I just caught up with this thread and all I can say is DAMN!

Your conversions are really top notch! you are very good at composition, everything looks right together! I am amazed at yours and others on Dakka's GS work, it befuddles me how you guys do that so well. I am also a fan of your color scheme, the grey with the blue bitz have that Prussian look to them, just enough to make it look perfect!

Thanks a lot for your kind words (and suggestions for Sentinal names! I was actually thinking of Larry, Curly and Moe but was worried that it might affect their battlefield performance!!).

dsteingass - I've seen your IG too actually and really like the Nam vibe through it all...I'm dead jealous of the Marauder Destroyer!

I hope to get this section of my forces finished for a Narrative event at the end of the month (kind of an anti-tournament ie not 2 Gray Knights players smashing the same list into each other..). Then I want to start on my small special forces unit...

Thanks a lot, the StarWars hats were just sculpted green stuff, I don't think I quite got them as good as the in the source pic I posted direct from the film but it was good enough I reckon.

I've nearly finished my 6th Infantry squad which will complete my 3rd Platoon so I'll do some pics maybe tomorrow.

Here they are as raw recruits:

I've also made a start on my Commissar:

Base coat and basic black ink wash so far, I will force myself to do him next....

Thanks!

I finished that last Infantry squad so here are the pics of the complete Platoon!

Junior officer 'insert name here'.

Battle Honour on RTB01 power fist.

Medic and NCO.

Special weapons.

Squad 1.

Autocannon team.

Spent brass are just rolled GS. Added extra sandbags, only one pair is off the sprue.

Sarge, slight conversion, weapon swap for laspistol (from pointing hand).

Squad 2

More AC action, with added reference to a popular science fiction film...

Team are mid reload, I added shell visible here.

Gunner is preparing to cock mechanism and chamber 1st round...

Sarge...

Everybody!

Basically the same as Plat 1, 2x AC and 2 x GL, they are good guardy weapons. The commissar I'm working on will belong to this unit. The last squad I did (squad 1 paradoxically) took under 10 hours I think which is speed painted as far as I'm concerned. I would like to spend more time on them but cannot face painting 100 troopers any more time consumingly than I have. This army is about getting them done really rather than super standards and mega conversions. This Platoon completes my Infantry company and I hope to get a chance to photograph them all with nice lighting and terrain soon.

Give us a twirl..

Socket like hing under arm is for his cane which has snapped off multiple times, it's now blue tacked to the base and will be the last thing to be painted..

Been having a hard time geting the lighting right as some of the shading is subtle, pretty hard especially with no ambient sunlight...Need a light tent really, managed to get last three by bouncing my daylight lamp off a sheet of paper...anyhoo he's slowly geting there...

If he is a Commissar, then his belt/sash should be crimson red eh? That and the pointy hat is the badge of the office of the Commissariat right? Otherwise, the bolter strap just floors me, so natural hanging. Whenever i do straps, they always end up hanging the wrong way. Amazing values in shadows you got here wurking with the greay of the stormcoat! Great job!

Thanks a lot dude, it's less of a sash and more of a belt, it's a bit wide to cover his torso spacer that's making him slightly taller.

His colleague here, Commissar B'stard is modelling the same coat worn open for those hot summer days, I was aiming to copy his belt with skull, obviously, buckle..

The straps are always bastards, the only advice to get them looking right re: weighting etc is to mess about with blue tack in the planning stages to get the right angle.

Thanks again for your praise I plan to steal some of your aircraft weathering when I do my Valk...

I really like Commissar Dredd, with his bolt pistol man purse , I kid, I think thats a great idea, and makes sense, since a bolter is suppose to be a huge marine weapon, a bolt pistol would be quite a handful for a normal human.

great pose and striking paint job, well done ole' chap.

Now get cracking on the Valk, can't make the Commisar impatient can you .

Hiya

First off, thanks for your posts,

@ Soo'Vah'Cha: Thanks a lot, I really wanted to convey this exactly, a BP for a Commissar would almost be a special weapon (ie flamer etc) and a symbol of rank which is why all my officers get them. I love your Tau stuff BTW simply ace conversions, I had the old 'Halcyon' kit for the 'Aliens' APC but it got trashed in a house move :(

@ dsteingass: Cheers dude, had to google that (Hogan's Heroes didn't really hit the UK) but he really does! Your Nuclear cannon is shaping up nicely!

@ Rogue Wolves: Ta bro, I like your Mordheim stuff really characterful!

@ porkchop806: Thanks, I really like IG SM team ups, they work great on the tabletop too, have you seen this BatRep? Clicky /shameless plug

Been toying with base ideas for the Valk, is this too much?

Terrain is a bit I've had lying around for years, I not sure what it's off actually, feel free to enlighten me.

Rubble would be tidier and base in general textured like the Sentinals..

This will be the squad it transports. I'm going to paint them up as Inquisitorial Storm Troopers as I love ISTs, black jump suits and shiny black carapace armour, lots of little red lights etc.

Squad leader has a Beret which will of course be red. I think I'm going to redo it as it doesn't look right to me... he has an empty knife sheath too so I added the top of one in.

I have a blue tacked squad of Valk door gunners which will be the troopers for my second CCS which will also be IST looking, the classic cadian officer will provide the leader and I have a RT astropath and Inquisitor to go finsih it off. The Inquisitor can be Ordos Xenos (always my fave) in Apoc and a counts as Commissar lord in normal but big games.

I like the narrative feel of this, it really lends itself to Apoc scenarios, an embattled Inquisitor with a small body guard of elite troopers commandeer the first Imperial troops they find to defend/destroy the thingy of doom, it just writes itself....

Mostly.....

The concept is great, but I do agree with your assessment I think doesn't look right because it's too big and too high on his forehead. IMHO, it will look a lot better if you shrink it by 50% and have the rim (if that's what you call it) be halfway between where it is now and his eyes.

Good luck!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Here are some full army shots, not great ones, from a game I played with Alex to practise for this coming weekends narrative campaign:

All painted now (bar the Valk which I borrowed for this game), this is my 2k list.

Full Infantry company some support units and a 'Tank Hunting' Russ Spearhead...yummy (the 2k list can use a Spearhead if you want). If I wasn't spending those 60 pts on the formation rules I'd add another scout HK/AC Sentinal and another Ratling. This will be my basic 2k list.

The event starts with 1k - 1.5k - 2k with some modification to the FOC at 1k and forgeworld (non superheavy) units allowed throughout.

I think this army looks best en masse.

I do a little more on the Valk today and post up some pic soon cheers..

Thanks a lot everyone.

Yes I will be redoing the beret..

I went to 'Spoils of War' last weekend which was good fun actually. A campaign tournament where the emphasis was on fun and thematic lists, not on uber pwnage, not everyone got that memo seemingly but it was fun none the less.

I've got pics and might do a little tourny report but it will be a lot of typing!

I also have some pics of the base of the Valk which is finished, I've been having problems with the internet ATM so cannot upload but will soon.

Some basic work on the Valk too:

Looks presentable, I do want to do some fancy stuff on it as well: decals, weathering etc. Anyone got any good tips for weathering?, not done a lot of it before bar brown drybrush and chipping.

Thanks,

Here's an update on them.

Still pretty early, only the jumpsuits are done, the armour plates are black with a neat black (old style of) Ink wash, this gives quite a nice gloss finish. They will be edge highlighted next.

I was thinking of maybe doing a single white shoulder pad (asymmetry again) with a red stripe or maybe halves/quarters even and then a black motif of some kind. Then I would go back to the Valk (can't face it now) and add this heraldry?

Any thoughts?

Hi Randy!

Three things:

First, the Commissar turned out incredibly!

Secondly, the Valk looks the business, and...

Thirdly, the edge highlighting on your Storm Troopers is very neat. It is certainly clear that you took your time!

Yes, vertical stripes are best.

I love it when people make their own commissars, and yours is no exception. If I might make a suggestion, it might be better if the belt were a different color, say the color of the bolt pistol strap, or something.

Nice army over all, too. Isn't it nice to see how just a little bit of GS here and there can really make models unique?

Keep it up!

Thanks for the comments,

@Rogue Wolves - Thanks, don't worry the white is just a test out, that half of the troopers are only basecoated..

@Cosmic -Thanks too, the valk is only basecoated, the thought of finishing it gives me the screamingheebeejeebees ATM, hence skipping on to the Storms/Carapace Vets.

@Ailaros - Thanks, I've seen your stuff and love your Commissars too, the belt is too wide really as it grew to cover the torso spacer, but is supposed to be the same as the other commissar, a belt off his trenchcoat, I think in hindsight a big red sash etc might have been better as people keep pointing it out! I agree about the GS, I especially like your facial modelling and the variety you get from it, great stuff.

Lots of votes for horizontal, cool, hopefully do a bit more soon before the xmas shutdown..

What is the white stuff you're using for the basing material, I'm making mycetic spores for the missus and that would be idea for the CD bases.

Also, I like the diagonal stripe on the stormtroopers.

Oh yeah, I was totally considering this,

With badge as well, also I was thinking maybe this as nose art..

But I didn't think the Omega symbol would work with all the Ultra 'Upsilons' in the army too, still toying with ideas really, regards to shoulder pads, I was thinking red with a white bar central and a Inqusition ][ thingy in the middle? I was thinking of making a Bestor too, maybe out of a hobbit or something, make a good 'Master of the Fleet' or 'Primaris' though he was never that overt..

@Tortured-Robot - Thanks! wanted them to look a bit different to the rest of my force (and the standard Kasrkin)..

EDIT: Oh yeah, the white stuff is just common or garden polfilla, works great as a cheap base texture, does have a slight tendancy to shear off it's base however and small 'glue wells' of superglue down to the base can help...

Thanks a lot!!

back from the holiday period (my birthday was on the 17th so to me Christmas doesn't end until about now), I thought I'd show what I've been tinkering with recently..

First up reinforcements!! Thank you to various family members for their generosity, they don't usually get me toys but they seem to have relented...maybe it's because I don't appear to be growing out of this 'phase'.

I also got this puppy, a Contemptor, which is too beautiful to build....I will eventually but that's another blog...

I have built the tanks, here's the Hellhound:

Wanted it to have improved side armour as it has AV12 on the sides. I have just added the spare plates off the Chimera base sprue. I have made them slightly spaced, as the turret armour is too.

Dozerblade is to make it look more 'urban combaty'. MM in the hull so it can have a pop at Landraiders/Battlewagons should it be necessary.

Also in spooge cannon variety, for those pesky power armoured chaps..the barrel is just bluetacked in ATM so can be swapped to any variant needed. Wow that MM look gappy in that pic, might have to fill it.

I'll stick up some pics of No.4 Russ soon..

Ta Ta

My as yet un named hero Russ. Tank commander can be run as Pask, Plasma cannon sponsons and Vanquisher main gun.

I've used the muzzle break off the Eradicator cannon as I think it gives the Vanquisher a different look, I wanted it to look different to just a long Battlecannon.

As it's the new variant of the Russ kit I think it makes a more interesting boss tank as it is slightly different to the old types my squadron is composed of.

My sometimes Pask. I was thinking Wittman when I put him together..he needs another small session of greenstuffing to sort out his arm and to tidy up the goggle built over the weird Jordi LaForge type visor thing that head comes with..

But wait, what new devilry is this? I magnetised the sponsons, I glued a small magnet into the superstructure...

Covered it in GS and more glue, if it snaps off the hull I'll never be able to get too it as its within the track sections..

I made a small projecton to help it stay level and indeed on.

Inside the sponson I glued a bar of sprue with the same small magnet on it..

I found them a little weak and pulled the lot out with pliers and replaced with a big long magnet, held in place with GS. These seem more secure.

I have left the Vanquisher barrel unglued so it will slide out leaving the mantlet and base of the barrel, this allows easy replacing with a standard battlecannon. It's a little too slidey but a tiny GS nub or even just superglue left to dry might tighten the fit..

Here is the Exterminator variant, the mantlet setting has gone completly.

I've left the turret top unglued and built a bar of sprue across.

A magnet on the bottom half of the turret creates quite a strong bond as they can touch (not held apart but the thickness of the hull as per the sponsons) and it's possible to pick the tank up by the turret.

All the socket mounts for the sponson and hull mounts will be left unglued as well so it can be configured to whatever I want to try out. This was also done as insurance against 6th edition!

I'm going to postpone the Valk and Stormies as they are really hard!, I'm also thinking of retrofitting the Valk with magnets so it can be a Vendetta when required, I might as well use it a few times before the next codex ups the cost by 30-60pts!

I'm going to paint these tanks next but I am already feeling the call to paint some more ancients as the new Armies of Antiquity has been released and it's really good...bah

Loving the muzzle on that cannon, looks very business-like!

Glad to see your exploits in the world of magnets, that hell hound is looking good as well (although I have a strong dislike of the 'Mr Whippy' nozzle they give you for whatever the variant is called).

You scored well with the Xmas lootz btw, I got me some sweet Dark Eldar stuffs and will be embarking on a blog of my own with em soon enough... (airbrush to get first from my tax returns). Which weapons did you get with your forgeworld dread?

(ps - won the dakkacon 40k tourney last weekend... you created a monster! )

Top 3?

Always make me thing of that song, thanks for the sub!

Been a bit quiet on the IG front I'm afraid, might have something to do with these guys:

Yes been dabbling with the Dark arts of Warhammer Ancient Battles again..(more pics in the Gallery) but I will swing round to the IG again I promise!

MGS: I got the Kheres AC arm (H6? yes please) the DCCW arm (fleet? don't mind if I do) and the bolt on Cyclone launcher..It's pretty awesome though at 225pts it bloody well should be....

Yes the 'Bane Wolf' nozzle is rubbish but 'killing MEQs on a 2+' super flamer is nice!!

Gratz on the tourney, I assume you were Orking it? What Pts and what were you using? BW spam?

Wow, expensive but sexy dread, was it the claw CCW or the hand CCW? (I'm liking the sound of the graviton gun on the claw...)

Bane Wolf: True, so are you considering a conversion for the nozzle?

1k pts, I took 2 wagons (does that count as spam?), one with 12 burnas and a BM w KFF, the other with 20 boyz with nob pk/bp, 2x5 lootaz (one of which I forgot to deploy on the first game...), 1 deffkopta, 1 deffdread. 1st game was against DoA Blood Angels with FNP/meltas/flamers and rerolls galore - win - tabled, 2nd game was against BTs (very knowledgeable player) with PotMS vindicators x2, 2 missile covered land speeders, a razorback with lasplas and a rhino, the latter 2 containing an assault squad and a regular squad and the emperors champion - win - very messy and hard fought game, 3rd and last game was against Grey Knights, all terminators, 2 squads with psycannons and halberd things (1 had a librarian I think), 1 ubersquad of 2 wound individualised guys with all sorts of terrifying stuff... Which failed it's DS roll - touching one BW and fzarted out of existance - the penalty for all your eggs in one basket I think... - tabled him also. So 3 for 3, 2 tabled against 2 new and terrifying army lists and 1 hard fought against a canny dude with nasty twin vindy/land speeder pairs. More 'eads fer me boss pole! I did wonder how it might have gone if I'd just replaced the BWs with masses of 20 strong units of boyz... but then I wanted to field a fully painted army and, other than the deffkopta, I was able to, which was really nice.

I love that Flight of the Conchord song..

Hand CCW, yeah Gaviton is rad but if you're using a Cyclone you will have to be not firing something and it's too many points for a back up gun. If I wasn't set on the launcher I would have got it..

I can't be bothered to convert the Mr Whippy nozzle, I doubt I'll use it very often, it's nice to have options..

Is that 1k? Good list and good winz, you were lucky having those Paladins got lost in the warp (the irony), I had that happen in the opening game at Spolis of War. 1k lists, no heavy support(!), and I find myself fighting all Khorne Chaos daemons with 2x3 Blood Crushers and a Herald on Chariot and 30-40 Bloodletters..but he managed to lose a BL unit on the way in, really helped! That'll learn em to risk it. Nearly tabled him.

Any chance you could freehand 'stop me and buy one' on the side of the turret... (do you remember the Dark Future ice cream van in an ancient WD?)

Yep, it's the 1.k list I usually use, stripped of 1 BW, 1 20xboyz w nobpk/bp, 1 deffkopta, 3 lootas, 3 burnaz and all the bells and whistles on the vehicles and Mek (grot riggers, cybork and all that gubbins). I was very very lucky with that Grey Knights army and, as I hate that codex, was glad to see such a mighty op unit of doom not even get on the table (was a shame for the fella who I was playing, but he and I were tied for 1st up till then, so that's why we fought in the last game). I imagine they got stuck in the warp writing their names all over primarch daemon princes, the hoodlums!

Are you going to do any freehand banners on the dread? I was just thinking an old school titan styled pennant banner hanging from his assault cannon would look cool...

I may do a 'stop me and buy one' as per that old Dark Future Ice Cream van..

I've had some spare time this week as I have hurt my leg (not seriously, just can't walk far) and they have been the main beneficiary, i intend my WAB army to have a slightly higher quality than these guard, less speed painting..

Started this bad boy off, need a name for it, I want to do a slogan or nose art style thing (al la 'Grim Reapers' on my squadron command) on the nice big obligingly empty space on the side of the turret but am at a bit of a loss as to what to do...

Any suggestions?

No?

What about "The Judicatory" as in "pertaining to judgment or the administration of justice". I'm leaning more towards the "administration of justice" part

Sorry for the slow reply, definately an option, I have managed to do some more on it and also my hellhound..

I've done all the base colours, and some detaling now..

Still unsure of a name...

Tank ace, nearly done, I gave him a different base uniform colour to echo Goering and his sky blue vanity uniforms he invented for himself, I like to slightly reference things to give extra gravitas and hint at the fascism of the Imperium.

When I stalled on the Vanquisher due to being unable to decide on murals etc, I started (and nearly finished) my Hellhound..

Still want to do some heat damage on the nozzle, I saw a nice tutorial on here somewhere, I decided to glue it in as the other types look daft and will be too fiddly/easily lost..

Got a name for this, I have high hope for this film and there is the fire connection and I have some other classical references with other vehicles..

"Who knew flammable and Inflammable meant the same thing"?

I hope to have a big game tomorrow and use all of my IG in it against my preferred enemy, Alex and his Nids, I'll try to get some pics and do a BattRep if it turns out interesting enough..

See you on the Battlefield..

In the FACE..

Will hope to finish the report today..

Here are some shots if the finished Prometheus who makes his debut in the above report..

Not a great pic but I did some extra weathering on the dozer blade..

There is some heat damage on the inferno nozzle too,

I used repeated washes of Regal Blue, Liche Purple and black, then re edged the weapon in chainmail..

Side shot..some extra detailing..

Couldn't help myself...

Rear got a bit gunged, the goo is on the top of the barrels as well..The 'stop me...' is perhaps redundant now I can't fit the 'Mr Whippy' nozzle....meh

Other side..

Right that's the lot, I will try to come up with ideas and then finish my Vanquisher..

Also I ordered some of these..

From Three Stage Studios (http://threestagestudios.blogspot.com) so we'll see what there like when they turn up...

Thanks!

Been quite a while but I haven't forgotten about the plucky guard.

I finally persuaded myself it would be ok to buy one of these puppies..

Thanks GW price increase!... I got it just before it went up to £70?! *EDIT* This was also my 500th image uploaded!

This will be my Colonel, if I were an IG HQ I wouldn't be running round the front with a sword, I'd commandeer the biggest thing around..For +25 pts there's an upgrade called 'Command Tank' which means everyone within 24" can re roll morale tests.

I'm adding another cupola too as I wanted a Heavy Stubber gunner.

In case you haven't been around this kit, It's really big. Do you like the hood ornament?

I plan to do lots of little conversions on this bad boy, the above stuff is all very preliminary, hence bluetack cap etc.

Anyhoo see what you think, I'll post up some more pics soon, I started greenstuffing the details today..

As usual, more excellent work from you. I especially like the crew members. Might I suggest, if you feel intrepid, to give them Hellhound guy a scarf, balaclava, or other kind of face protection due to the heat from the flame cannon? Might be a cool touch on that or future models.

The above unpainted crew are for the Shadowsword, the Hellhound crew are sensibly hiding inside the tank. I will do a cap for the officer and I was thinking of adding a scarf/cravat too...I've done a lot of GS headgear throughout this force, they don't make enough cap/beret heads!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I have done some more on my Paskquisher too..

I don't think you need a degree in latin to translate this..

Tiger tank? Points deducted for anyone who says that it's "GRRRRRRRRRRRRReat!". I'm still not sure about it and plan to redo/tidy the text up. I was thinking of moving the crown onto the tigers head at a jaunty angle?

Muddied up the sides and added more details

I saw the film as well and was disapointed ( it didnt suck, but there was only really 1 tense moment for me, and there was virtualy no payoff ) , but i like the name, just if someone asks if its because the movie, you can say common man know your mythology! and then mutter to yourslef "what happened to people in this day and age? )

1) Bring an apocalypse template.
2) PM me for my cellphone number.
3) During your game, you will need to SMS me a picture of the game table, and where you want the missile to land.
4) I will SMS back the scatter die rolls.
5) Apply template.

I'll hold you to that!, might be a time difference issue...

@Rogue: Ok, now you have to explain CATPIRATE to me..

More Shadowsword coverage:

Hood ornament, complete with coup-de-grace bullet hole and industial rivets holding it in place.

Chain thing, for chaining stuff...it's from the old vehicle accessory sprue, I had to remove a section and drill out the link bit to fit it back in. Also gave it a slight bend.

Spare wheel, in case of puncture...

I've also been considering updating my bases from the mid 90's style to a more comtempory brown and static grass deal. I am thinking 'Graveyard' rims and 'Scorched' sand with a 'Bleached' drybrush, then small bits of static grass and maybe some clump foliage...I used this on my Medievals and liked it..

It'll be a big job (over 100 infantry) but I think it might be worth it as people often say my old school basic basing lets my stuff down..

Any thoughts?

I am thinking 'Graveyard' rims and 'Scorched' sand with a 'Bleached' drybrush, then small bits of static grass and maybe some clump foliage...I used this on my Medievals and liked it..

It'll be a big job (over 100 infantry) but I think it might be worth it as people often say my old school basic basing lets my stuff down..

Any thoughts?

I would agree that your current bases are a bit lacking, and would benefit from some TLC. I don't think it would take so long, as you don't really need to undo anything, just redo over the top.

Yes, the new texture paints may take quite a bit of work out of it. Definately get rid of the Goblin Green rims. I love the tank additions man! The skull with industrial Rivets is great! The Road Wheel brackets are awesome, and your tow cable is a bit short, but looks great!

Yeah the tow cable is more cosmetic than utilitarian.

I actually rebased an entire platoon yesterday..I'll do some pics later hopefully..

I have more pics of further Shadowsword detailling..

Replaced the giant super heavy smoke launchers with 2 sets of normal ones, also a handle on the small panel behind the front set of launchers.

Tool stowage on flank, improved the axe after this pic, trimmed it slightly

Various kit bags hanging off turret on same side..

Turret gunner is built..Space Marine turret ring with old style Chimera doors and Heavy Stubber..

Cut the details off the floor below..this has now been GS'd flatter..

Which can be seen a bit here. Also stowage on the roof, extra ammo for the HS, these where made of of HB ammo boxes off the heavy weapon sprues. The fuel cans I've had lying around for years probably from a tank kit..

Colonel, pre cap..with sandbags and binocs

HK missile added to LC sponson..

Little targety gubbins off the Armoured Sentinal roof...

Blast damage with hasty battlefield repair job..

That's nearly all the detalling done, just some tweaks here and there..

That turret ring works so much better for IGuard than Space Marines. That gunner actually looks like he can fit through that hatch, lol. I eliminated those from my Space Marine army simply because I couldn't reconcile the fact that there's no way for the Marine to actually pass through the hatch.

I never really noticed that size problem before..and I do have one in my marine army...that'll bother me now, at least no ones actively using it!

With the new look, It will look a lot less visually arresting on the usual dark and grimy 40k tables, when the goblin green could divert the eye from the model it's self.

Well I've very little time to waste on toys but I'm about half way through rebasing the Guard...not too bad really..I'll do some pics when I get the chance..Yes I'll do the Marines too, they need to match for big games and of course the new allies rule.....

I've been away so not had time to answer your comments, I've been trying to catch up with all my internets..I'll try to get on with stuff and do some more pics over the next while but I'm relitively busy ATM so might not get too much toytime..

Thanks!!

I hope to get time tomorrow for final tidy ups and some small details/fill ins.

I had my first knock about game of 6th ed on Sunday as well.

I used Marines against Alex's Nids, neither of us used Bastions or Aliies type crazyness. Mine was the exact list I used throughout 5th against anyone and everything, Alex slightly tailored his list with 6th in mind (Flyrant!). I had no Psycher and he swapped 'leach essence' for Biomancy and swapped for 'Smite'.

I may do a Batrep but it looks like my home pc HDD just failed...............I doubt I can scrape enough time at work so will just give my impressions here..

His advance units; Infiltrating Stealers and Hormies, had a much harder time covering ground to reach my units, I flew my Assault squad at a depleted 'Stealer unit and shot it right up with a flamer and a well placed Frag, when the 3 survivors charged my unit in retaliation I 'Wall of Death'ed them to oblivion..The other unit of stealers, denied a previous charge by dodgy rolls for distance and casualties being removed from the front, finally assaulted a unit of 6 Devs who shot 3 with Overwatch and then went first in combat (no frags on stealers) and slew the remaining 3...These are just some incidents across the game and really show how an army like his is really struggling now, I am sure he will find his feet more and his is an extreme example (weak Nid book, he prefers Claw units over Gun ones) but I was surprised how different it was.

His Flyrant was amazing until we noticed you can force them to crash! Any HITS (not even wounds [but you are only hitting on 6's]) force them to make a 'Grounded' roll which is a 3+ save, if failed, they immediately crash and take a str9 hit with no saves! His Flyrant was trying to Smite my termies (ineffectively) and their asscan forced him to crash basically in my deployment zone where the close combat specialist Devs shot it to oblivion..

I look forward to another go especially with the IG but shooty Infantry seem to be very effective indeed, a standard tactical (FL&ML) for instance can move some troopers but leave the ML in place so it can fire at full effect, this allows everyone to get into rapid fire range and the flamer to maximise it's coverage, the sarge (with his pistol and so only 1 shot) can lob a frag instead. All the kills are then removed front the nearest making it harder to assault. Then assuming your opponent makes the roll to charge, the tack squad all get to rapid fire, including a krak off the ML (albeit all only hitting on 6's) as well as D3 hits off the flamer. Then strike first in Melee (if you're occupying terrain). Obviously other armies don't suffer as much as 'light' nid units but still...strewth..

Edited to make it more legible

Hi

I've not been able to post much recently due to still buggered home PC and various personal issues. I have still found time for (and solace in) some modelling however..

I've finally finished my Vanquisher with Pask equivalent (not that I usually run it as such)..

I've uploaded various WIP pics already, here's a 3/4 shot..I added the blue kill marking to the barrel to further tie into the existing look of the Russes (Russi?), and the legend on the front is just visible (I have already posted a pic of this) it reads 'My Armour is Contempt' in Latin (according to Google Translate), though someone pointed it out it probably should read 'I have contempt for your armour...'.

Side shot, tidied up the power warning sign, posted before..

Detail on 'nose art'. Changed this from the previously posted version, moved the crown and redid the text..It continues the slight (some would say not slight) German and WWII themes in my force. The King Tiger was a famous German tank, famed for it's ability to trash other armoured vehicles (I fully expect everyone to already know this BTW it's just in case) and the tank commander has certain overtones which I commented on before..

Other side....

Eventually came up with a name, different font to the others to show he's a man apart..the Plasma sponson has a witty comment that could have been scrawled by a guardsman that is also a remark on the facepalm idea of vehicle mounted plasmas 'Getting Hot'?? in 6th Ed.

Logo to denote his 'Ace' status..

Another shot of 'Pask' (I've posted him before), haven't changed much, some slight tweaks..

That's the lot! I'll post up some details soon, what do you think?

Have been reading the updates but haven't posted in a while. The work you have been doing is excellent and I'm particularity impressed w/ your most recent work, the freehand is amazing. The shading and depth (like the border on the Ace marking) is intense and impressive.

Great work all around. Sorry about the "Gets Hot" rule in 6th Ed. It's GW's way of saying "Thanks for buying all our tanks over the last few years. Sorry the suck now. But hey, we have Flyers and those don't suck! Go buy those!"

Thanks for the praise, I think free hand stuff is what I do best really, Ive not done masses for this army yet, been ploughing out the mans, now they're mostly done I can spend time on nice projects like this, mostly.

I think the whole flyer thing will blow over, especially when codicies start getting the 'flakk' type of ML ammo mentioned in the rulebook, I've got my (unfinished) Valk and that will do me...

Thanks for reading

Ta dude..

Started this guy I had lying around since it was current....

Blurry pic sorry (he might be doing anti surveillance). I've always liked this Rogue Trader Astropath and thought I'd use him as a Primaris, I don't like the current model (I think he looks like Paul Daniels). I can drop the MoO and a PW Commissar and put this guy in a Blob instead and gain 5 pts, In larger games (1500+) it'll be easier to find room. If he's near the CCS Standard the blob will still have rerollable Ld 9 (without the Sarg sniping!) but will lose Stubborn :(.

They will gain a crazy space wizard however and with 2 Biomancy spells he could do alright, a CC buff could make him slightly hard (unusual for the Guard) and other spells have a nice mix of unit buffs, low AP shooting (die marines), and hexs (-1 T to the enemy is great for IG).

This is bult now (MwaHAHAHAHhahhhahhA), I have forced myself to push it back in the painiting queue however as I won't be able to deploy it for a while...

Still nothing arrived from 3 Stage Studios :(

I have now completely rebased my entire IG army (finished last night) OMG I see static grass when I close my eyes...I would like some Barbie wire (and I've come to realise I'm too Lazy to make it) and some tufts but my FLGS was sold out...will see what they get in this week..

I'll start to take some pics of the rebased stuff as opportunities present themselves..

STAY FROSTY

Those green stuff details on the tank commander are wonderful. How are you smoothing your GS? Some of it looks really smooth and some of it looks kind of rough or uneven.

??

Randy's Ultramarines & Macragge PDF (IG) First 3 Converted Bladeguard Completed! @ 2012/07/15 12:30:37

Post by: RandyMcStab

The roughness is usually because of the repeated 'tooling' of and area like the goggles, it'd be hard to smooth that out without trashing the edges. Other times when I glue an area of GS on, I do try to as otherwise it can just pop off with a drop etc, the superglue causes it to cure too quick before it can be smoothed out. This happened to the right sleeve (as we look at it).

I did go back over some areas and tidy them up and after painting it will be less obvious/invisible.

To smooth an area I usually pat it with a finger if it's a large area such as sandbags or cap tops, smaller bits I find harder and often get wrong but I wet an implement (I do 90% of my sculpting with a scalpel blade) and drag it across. After an area has cured you can trim it too.

Yo

Been doing work on my stalled Stormtroopers, (I normally use them as Grenadiers however..)

They're supposed to look intimidating and impressively equipped to contrast with the regulars. I started their 'Silver' areas off with 'Chainmail' instead of 'Boltgun' so they look flasher..the use of gold further points out these guys aren't grunts..

The jumpsuits are highlighted with shadow gray, the armour plates with codex gray to differentiate them slightly..the armour plates had a neat wash with (the original GW) black ink to make it shiney..

I think they're coming on ok, I've done the shoulder insignia on these guys now..and started basing (novel to not have to re-base..)..more to follow (when I get a chance)..

Off to see 'Ministry' tonight with some buddies, gonna be a blast from the past, maybe get a game against my mates Eldar tomorrow as well...

Keep the faith brothers..

I painted the panels black then washed with black ink (old stuff) which drys to a nice shiny finish. Then the panels were edge highlighted with a mix of black and codex gray, and then another with more codex..

The Jumps suits got no inkwash and 2 hightlights of a black - shadow gray mix (which is blue-y) and the 2 areas do look different, not so much in these pics however..

I made myself a little wet palette as it's a pain when these mixes dry out half way through, it's insane, the paint is still wet 2 days later! Well worth it for this sort of slow application highlighting..

The Stormtroopers turned out great! Simple scheme worked well.

Ministry!!! you say? Was AMR there and did it, therefore, turn out to be NIN?

Yes she was (with her new tiny Latina GF!, which was funny as Julian turned up....................) I think she's looking really well too..
I thought I was the only one who remembered that...as Jon/Luke/Henry didn't seem to register it, whilst I found it hilarious...
They were really good after the 1st hour of just playing new stuff that was very generic thrash really, they did 50 mins of Psalm 69 era stuff....which was awesome, there was moshing

They dropped off my radar with 'Filth Pig' (an album, not a 'practice') and not really missed em. They actually split in 2008 and reformed for the 'Relapse' album.

Doesn't seem like I missed much going by what I heard at the start of the gig, old stuff still sounds ace however.

S'up

Finished the 1st 5 of these puppies...

Did some heat damage on the flamer here, washes of Liche Purple, Regal Blue, Brass and then Black.

Logo's done, 'The Corps is Mother, The Corps is Father'...

Group shot, the other shoulder pad has the number '71' (it's easy to paint!), it's in numbers instead of numerals to differentiate from the grunts as these guys are supposed to be Inquisitorial Stormies..

Still a way to go on the remainder...

See ya soon..

Yes, I remember AM shouting 'MINISTRY!!!!' on a squidgy black night in The Venue, it was you and me sipping pints as I recall, and that hot bisexual girl with long blonde hair who's name I've forgotten (ellie maybe?), who's face I ended up eating at the end of the night. If the others were about, they were on the dancefloor when it happened.

that freehand logo is looking boss, did you outline with black or is is all black and then again with the gold over the top?

Also, apparently Harlequin Miniatures did a B5 range, heres a pic of some.

Very out of date pages though, although I seem to remember Black Tree Design bought many of the casts, let me know and I can ask Dean about it.

Ellie Sunshine *sigh*...

Yes ask about Bestor as the model looks nice (from what I can make out from that tiny pic) I had a look on eBay but nada...

I painted the symbol in black and filled in the gold, drew the line at shading the said gold however..

I've just read through the whole thread, and you have some really nice stuff going on! I admire your GS work, as I am just starting out with it. Do you have any tips? Anyway, I have subscribed. Definitely looking forward to more of this! By the way, I love the converted Commissar! Do you know if he has committed any executions yet?

Also, you seem to be one of a few Imperial Guard generals left that don't field their veteran armies in Chimeras with melta-guns. I respect that.
Kudos to your Sir. *salutes*

Thanks! Glad you liked it!

With GS i'd say just practice really. 2 good points however:

Leave it for a while (5-10 mins based on ambient temp) once mixed as it'll be super sticky and hard to work with.

Make sure whatever you're sculpting with is wet so the GS doesn't just stick to it. You can (and I do) get sets of tools but I do 90% of mine with just a scalpel balde.

I've rebased said Commissar now I'll try to get some pics up when I get the chance, I think he's only capped 1 Sarg so far, *fingers crossed* Ld 9 is pretty good and when near a standard you can use that re-roll instead

Thanks for the kudos, I really dislike that whole mech vet thing, IG should be about big Infantry formations backed up with some scary (but inaccurate) tanks and specialists (snipers, mounted vets etc) all watched over by Commissars...
/

Anyhoo *Salutes Back*

Thanks for the reply. The GS tips should come in handy here and there! ... When it comes to the Commissar, only one?; not bad.
I quite agree with you, when it comes to the structure of your army. It fits much better with the Guard fluff and image. After all, it is said that they expend lives at the same rate as they do so with ammunition!

Cool dude.

looks like Three Stage Studios are ripping me off. I still haven't receive the 'replacement' dispatch either and sent another email asking about refunds and now ominous silence :(
It was only $20 or so at least...

There was a thread about his shop on Dakka and it seemed pretty split between people happy with his service or really not.

So it seems like I'm in the market for some track bogies again..pity as the nicest I've seen were by 3SS.

Zinge do a nice set of build it yourself ones but I want 6 sets which would be £60 from them!? I'd rather have a Baneblade thanks...

http://www.freewebstore.org/Zinge-Industries/Modular_Tank_Tracks/cat658642_929443.aspx

Ramshackle do some nice ish sets too, I'm looking at 'Track 2' which would be a more reasonable £10 or the 'Grendal' at only £7!

http://shop.ramshacklegames.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=25_43

Know of any other contenders?

Sorry to hear you might be ripped off. That's a horrible feeling regardless of how much you spent. It looks like I might have to contact eBay for the first time in 3 years, item isn't showing up and seller isn't responding.

I understand that life happens and things can get a bit out of control so I always try to offer the benefit of doubt for as long as possible. But not responding to any inquiry? That's just bad business practice.

You are right, for the price perhaps a Baneblade kit would be your best option. You'd have lots of nice bitz left over for sure...

Yeah it sucks, I'll send one more email asking for a refund (it's past time for a paypal escalation) then write it off and bad mouth him all over the internet

But my loss is Ramshackle's gain, I ordered 3 sets of these track bogies...

They look a bit well ramshackle but I think they'll still be ok for guard. I plan to make a version of Rapiers (mount a lascannon between then) and then use them as a Lascannon battery..

I also noticed this little beauty and couldn't resist it, only £7!, I thought it'd make a sweet little Salamander scout car...

So we'll see if these guys deliver!

They need a little cleaning work mind but most of their stuff is quite cheap, their resin always looks sticky to me
