Sirs,Ma'ams,Ladies and Gents,

Link to the new project 25/04/18 https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/570/341924.page

Click on the link to my latest projects http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/150/341924.page

So here is my P+M blog. Please be honest, constructive, critical etc. If you have any hints/tips/ideas/comments/banter so on so forth then I want to know. I just want to say thankyou to all those who have influenced my thinking (i.e. I've robbed your ideas).

So on with the monstrous first page. First up, what I consider finished (for now):

And finally,the group shot...

So it's not too bad. However, I wish to add the following:

x5 Terminators
x2 Dreadnaughts
x1 Landraider
x Daemon Prince
x2 Plague Marine squads
x1 Rhino

So up with the Daemon Prince first.

He's been neglected for a few months, and the words I uttered when GW released the new plastic model shall not be uttered here. But I'm going to griz it through and get him finished. I did toy with the idea of getting a alternative DP from, say UltraForge, but it's too nice a model to coat in GS. So the GW Daemon Prince it was.

Here's some of the WIP pictures of my new Terminators:

Champion

Reaper Cannon

Rest of Terminator Squad

So theres still an absolute mountain of work to do, but I don't want to buy another FW kit. I loathe the tusked helmets, and the shoulder guards (the gurning skulls) are not my cup of rosy, so I'm plodding through, making each as indvidual as possible.

The squad of Plague Marines

Again, I'm not a great fan of the GW versions, but (A) I'm not buying FW kit and (B) I'm not into wasting models unessacerely (I can never spell that bloody word right). I am a great believer of recycling what I already have, such as three drop-pods,a dreadnaught (as above) and old models off the lads who need them re-homed.

The second of three dreadnaughts

Not sure what I'm going to do with this yet. It's the 2nd ed lead version. Any ideas?

The third of three dreadnaughts

Again, and old 3rd ed Space Wolves Dreadnaught. I'm also using the sarcophagus off of the metal Venerable Dreadnaught. I've just started to cut the legs, so pictures will follow shortly.

And finally, the Land Raider and Rhino.

So, recycling kit that I painted 5 yrs ago is my new flavour of the year. I've also 'aquired' 6 Rogue Trader 'Beaky' SMs, and also a few RT metal blokes, including an old Librarian!
Pictures will be added tomorrow of items yet to be displayed.

So, the plan in rough? Terminators and Daemon Prince will be done concurrently. Then I'm away for 7 weeks at work, meaning that at the end of this week, my plog will fall into myth, until I'm back in March to square away the rest of the troops. But this week, greenstuff Terminators and finish base coating the DP.

I don't know about you, but I'm off for a cigarette....

Nice stuff BTB! Those Acrylic bases are really intriguing, never have to worry that your base scheme won't fit with the board you are on...

Thanks Tom. I got the idea for the acrylic bases from an old P+M blog. A guy had done a desert SM army and I thought 'thats a quality idea'. They're made by a company called 'Litko Aerosystems'. They custom design any dimension and material base format that you heart requires. Give 'em a google. Dead good

Holy cats Bash... love those plague marines! I'm not much of a chaos guy but you and Yggs have really made me change my opinion on that.

I really like the tone and feel of them... not just mounds of oozing green puss (which at least to me gets old after the 100th viewing). The bronze and verdigris are a very nice compliment to the bone color of the marines and equipment.

The clear bases are genius too... well done man!

Many thanks!!

@bunnygurl - thanks mate. Appreciate the comments. I'm not the best painter, My painting has only really started to develop the last year or so. I'm neat, but I like to keep it simple.

@Gitsplitta - what can I say, with comments from yourself and MajorTom11, with the standard of work that you produce. I'm chuffed to fook cheers mate

Where do you play in Norwich?

And I didn't even comment on all the conversion work... shame on me! Very tastefully done Bash... nurgle, but with a different spin... I like that. I wonder if you might consider altering the color of your plasma cores... the blue kind of gets lost in the verdigris...

@Rodgers37 - Thanks mate. Well this Thursday will be the first time that I will have played in GW Norwich despite living in Norwich for all of my 26yr existance.

Between 6 of us in our little gaming club, we play either in my gameroom/garage or my brother-in-law's house. We both live in Sprowston so it's ideal.

No shame required friend. Nice thought on the Plasma coils though. I've been institutionalised by the White Dwarf pages. I'm going to consider a change....hmm. Food for thought.

Not saying don't go to Norwich GW....
But there is another club, that may or may not be an option (think they might not be looking for new members at the moment), called Norwich Last Stand, located in Mucnhies cafe, next to Iceland (we used to play in Battlenet above, before it shut) On a Thursday night, from 4/5-10PM.... I'm currently in Canterbury at Uni, and can only go in the holidays. But because there is only room for 5 tables at the moment in the cafe (and card gaming downstairs) I think it gets busy at times...

@MajorTom - I like the suggestions. I'll dig out a plasma gun, do some testers, see what I fancy. As for cost,100 bases (25mm) cost me about $35 including shipping.

@Gitsplitta - The Profile pic is off a documentory about 'Hooligan camps' for kids in the Netherlands. I liked it.

@MajorTom - Tell me about it! Especially for across the pond shipping aswell. I've based my Escher gang on these aswell and they look really smart. Maybe there'll be a new fashion in man-dollies...

@Malganess - Thanks mate. I like clean Plague Marines, its' just my thing. I tried to go for the 'Post-pre-heresy' colour scheme.

Wow, amazing colour scheme!!!

The mix of bone + verdigris is a really efficient combination, I love it!

I also find the freehand Nurgle symbols on the Drop Pods astonishing! How did you manage to do this?

I'll follow this for sure...

@Ygg - Thanks buddy! The free hand was a right swear-job to do but I'm happy with it. I'm slowly getting better. I was practicing chequered patterns before I deployed last year, so perhaps I'll find somewhere to make it count.

Ok, here's the detail of the Heavy-flamer Terminator

The hazard stripes are not brilliant, so they'll be re-done. In fact they're bloody awful *embarrasing*

And Dreadnaught 1

And a dry mock up of Dreadnaught 3

@Zack - The company is called 'Litko Aerosystems' They do custom bases in any colour, any material. Give them a look.

Loving the GS work, really wish I could do more of it. Painting is great too. Love Drop Pods!

Out of interest what glue do you use to stick them to the bases? I would expect more 'cloudyness' to show on the base from a normal super glue, or are you just amazingly steady with the amount you use?

I'm no expert on hazard stripes but I always find it easier to paint the whole area yellow first, then use the black to do the stripes. Not sure which way you did them but I found this works for me.

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2011/01/24 22:17:02

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@Emperors_Champion - Thanks for the comments mate.I never thought of doing hazard stripes like that. I such a blonde (I am blonde for all you blondists out there)

As for the Drop pods, No one in their right mind spends £85/$140 on Dreadclaws for normal tabletop play, so I brought second-hand SM ones off ebay. I'm dead chuffed with how they've turned out.

And the bases, I used normal GW plastic glue for, well, the plastic troops, just using a tiny blob under each foot. The metal minis got pinned to the base with a thin slither of copper wire, coated in a thin layer of super glue. Then leave them to dry in a airing cupboard, so that no humidity gets trapped, causing said cloudiness.

The GS is easy.My missus is a Dental Nurse,so I get loads of discarded dental tools (The pointy-hooky thing that old gippers use to get crap out from underneath their dentures is the best) just look in the P+M tutorials. Thats how I learnt.

Beautiful work mate, and great to have you finally back (I/we good btw, cheers). Loving 99% of this but not sold on the front of dread 1: could we get a better shot? I think pale is the way to go with nurgle - it's the angle I took with cryx thralls m'self - and really looking forward to seeing more. Can't wait for the DP! Gonna try gs'ing a Blight Drone?

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@graven - Thanks mate.I really appreciate it.

I'm with you on the front of dread 3 tbh. I'm going to stick with it for the mean time as it makes the body longer (as in front to back). I'm also going to put washers inbetween the the ankles and feet, the hips and base of torso and the shoulders to make him alot more taller and wider.

As for a better shot, I'll sort one out for tomorrow, when I've thought the pose out abit better.

Blight Drone? I didn't even consider it.Hmmm...

I said to myself 'stick to the army list, whatever they say, just stick to the army list'.

That just went out of the window...

Wow.. you're on a whole new level of swearing over there.

Nice work! Love it. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love the non-green, non beer belly, non tank top marines for death guard. Good stuff man! The individual termy's are a great idea. I love the verdigris idea and I'm going to 'be influenced' by it for my next death guard army for sure.

On the dreadnoughts, buy some plasticard mate. Take a look at my blog (currently on hold while my new parts/materials etc arrive) at the dread.. or quicker still just take a look in my gallery. You can change the entire spin of the dread with a few small changes and mine might give you some ideas.

Keep it up man.. will be watching for sure. Woot finally someone else who calls them wee man-dollies!

Post by: Bash the Bosh

Ok, update time.

So it's been green stuff time. The Terminator squad Champion is ready to be primed once I've sorted whatever object is going to rest under his left foot (SM helmets are so 1995).
I've just got to finish the legs on the Reaper Gunner and one of the chain-fist blokes. However I don't want to over do it or the guys will look like they're wearing yeti suits. I've also started #4 and #5 Terminators.

And it's on with the pictures
Reaper Cannon:

Chainfist #1

And Terminator #4 Dry fitted

And while I was at it, I picked up a paintbrush for the first time since September last year, and re-done the powercoils on the Plasma gunner and Champion:

Apologies for the shot quality, for some reason my camera is playing up, but that will be rectified.

The plan is to finish GS on the Terminators by the end of the week and maybe, just maybe, get the DP base coating finished.

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2011/01/25 21:26:37

Post by: Scrazza

who would worry about the shot quality, if they are so nicely done? Good work on them.

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2011/01/26 11:57:07

Post by: Bash the Bosh

So, after going to bed at around 0330hrs GMT, I've finally finished the GS on the DG Terminators. So it's just a case of priming these blokes and cracking on with DP (and dabbling in Dreadnaught #3)

So thats it for now. I'll update more tonight.

Nice work Bash.... one step at a time, eh?

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2011/01/26 12:12:03

Post by: Bash the Bosh

Thanks Gitsplitta - Yeah on step at a time. I get carried away and start about 5-6 jobs at a time, then things get forgotten or rushed.

So I'm being strict and only working on 3 things concurrently. So the Terminators are good for priming (That'll be done when I get back in March). That leaves DP and Dreadnaught 3 to get on with.

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2011/01/26 14:49:50

Post by: Gitsplitta

The only way I keep my sanity is to try and stick to one project at a time. I don't pre-build my models either... just wait until I'm ready to do the project and then do the whole thing from start to finish in one shot. I do occasionally have more than one iron in the fire at the same time, or start a project & set it down for a while to work on something else... but typically it's one-and-done.

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2011/01/26 17:12:22

Post by: Bash the Bosh

I see where you're coming from. But I know what I'm like, I'll say 'right this is the only thing I'm going to work until it it's done' then 30 minutes later I'm cutting and shutting another model.

So I've set myself a 3 project limit. Work on 3 seperate tasks, each a little bit at a time. It's chaotic, buts thats me all over

Nice work on the Razorbacks btw Gitsplitta. Absolutley awesome stuff.

Btw Gitsplitta, talking of sticking to projects - I decided that the sword on the DP is poop. So to fit him into my army and because this IS an P+M blog, he is going to have a scythe.

So the shaft of the scythe is an aluminium tube, pinned into the DP existing hand:

And the scythe blade is the DP's sword, bent and sharpned on the inside blade:

Next up will be green stuff.Again.

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2011/01/26 18:22:50

Post by: inmygravenimage

Oh I like that!

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2011/01/27 13:46:38

Post by: Bash the Bosh

And so, with the rain and snow lashing into his face, Bash the Bosh stubbornly advanced his way into the portal of light....erm well into the kitchen anyway.

Here's the progress on the DP's scythe-

Just got to make it a little more 'daemony' with more green stuff (The scythe, not my son's toy car, though it could make a very interesting Rhino). I'm going to make the shaft a bit more rugged, maybe with a few leering faces. The base coat is finished on the DP and so it's on with the base highlights.

And also, whilst I worked feverishly on the above, the Ebay fairy paid me a visit and dropped off my new toys.

These guys will be pre-heresy marines (as I want to have them in their original state) and will form a squad of Chosen CSM. The Sergeant will have a head swap with a spare RT beaky helmet, and his power fist will be modified.

And here is the Chosen's ride,

Can't say I've ever seen a more sorry specimen of a Rhino, but at 99 pence, a mk1 Rhino is too good to pass up. Regardless of state, it'll be a good project to get on with later in the spring.

So there we go, another small update. Pics of the DP will be going on sometime later today.

Very nice work, although i curse you for putting Death Guard back in my head again! Like i need to re-visit yet another old unfinished project!

The clear bases look cool, ArbitorIan has them on his Tau as well, they look boss.

Keep it up!

PMSL at the idea of using Plugger (toy pick-up, non-smallfolk-dads) as a Rhino. Gonna have to raid the toy cupboard (mind you, already got dibs on a robot to turn into a gargant at some point in the distant). What's your plan for tackling the cheapo rhino?

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2011/01/28 18:09:21

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@Vitruvian- Yes the 'munda goodies will be in full flow soon, and more terrain is on the cards too.

@graven - I thought I'd mention Plugger before some smart-arse made a comment lol. At the moment I'm surrounded by Lightning Mcqueen, Roary the Racing car and Thomas the Tank Engine, all of which will be GS'd and made into Daemonic steeds!

As for the Rhino, I think it'll be plasticard and milliput,or an easier method is to try to get either get another mk1 or at least a Left handside track assembly. I'll give the plasticard a go first, just because.

Tonight, it's finish the DP upto a basice highlight standard.

Lads and Ladettes,

It's been a while (nearly two months!). But I'm back now, and with six weeks off, I have no excuse not to be getting on with various projects.

I'm having to reduce my Death Guard project somewhat. I've decided to finish my Daemon Prince,Terminators and the last squad of seven Plague Marines. This is due to...

Yes, one hundred and fifty seven Orcs and Goblins! And I haven't got everything on the army list yet!
So it'll be a busy few weeks. I've re-named the thread, and hopefully you'll get to enjoy me being reduced to a shrivelled husk, stuck under the lamp painting forty strong regiments of green man-dollies!

@ChocolateGork - Thanks buddy. The nice thing is,as you pointed out,is that GSing DG/Nurgle is'nt labour intensive. You can make a few mistakes and it'll still look pretty good.

@Ygg - Yes Spider riders! All Twenty of them. I'm having them because they've failed me every game so far (amnosity, fleeing etc) and I refuse to part with them. But they're very boring in terms of the actual model. I'll be changing a few around to bring some life to the Regiment.

Ok men,update time!

So, since I'm neck-deep in grey-skins at the moment, I guess I have to start somewhere.

Please ignore any mould lines, sprue marks, puddles of unidentified brown liquid, as these will be sorted before priming.

To start, my counts-as Grimgor Ironhide:

I'm not sold by the daggered hand thing at the moment. I'll have a think. The helmet is over-sized,but I like it.

Next, my Black Orc Big Boss BSB:

Utterly stolen from the O&Gs army book. But I needed a fairly easy kit-bash to get started.

As always, any comments or criticism is more than welcome.

Nice work. I like the colors and washes that were used. Interesting way to negate doing basework, just affix them to a clear plastic disc instead! That way they never look out of place on the battlefield

@ Element206 - Thanks mate. I wanted to base my DG, but after seeing how good the clear bases looked I decided against PVA,sand and all that. TBH it gives the models a more finished look. And as you rightly pointed out, it matches whatever board they stand on!

Ok men,

So today I can finally start priming my remaining DG Terminators and Plague Marine squads. The DP's Scythe needs priming, as do 157 Orcs and Goblins!

A bit more work on the Black Orc Warlord, and the Black Orc Command group. I decided on a 'Maritime' theme for my Orcs. I've ordered pirate orc heads from Maxmini to replace various heads amongst my Orcs. I also ordered Orcs and Goblins from the Pirate range by Black Scorpion. So my army will change somewhat over the next few weeks.

I'm also considering slave regiments (not sure to count them as Orcs or Goblins) using Empire Free Company and models from Hasslefree miniatures, and having Orcs as the command group. Food for thought.

Anyway, heres the pics:

So at the moment, still very basic work until I get some time to sit down and get stuck in properly.

I like the union jack laptop, back on topic I love the death guard they have been really well painted, however with the DP shoulder the GS looks like it hasn't been painted as it's green, may just be me. Apart from that it all looks jolly nice

@Ygg - Sounds right to me. An slave regiment (mal-nurished,tired,miserable) as Gobbos with a nasty Orc slave-driver seems the right way to go. Thanks mate!

@Young_Logan - Thanks mate. The DP shoulder pad has been painted (Catachan green washed with Thraka Green).

Much love,

The black orks look great, but maybe you should paint some metallic over the rusty blades of their weapons. The blades look too orange for me, but maybe that's just what you aimed for. And maybe some dark grey highlighting on the weapon poles, and some weathering on the armor.

I know, I know, I might have given you a bit too much 'negative' feedback, don't worry, they still look great!

The Squigs look great, have to agree with Vitruvian, they look hilarious. I can imagine the goblins holding on for dear life. Have you though of a goblin, hanging down the chain, holding on for dear life, while dangling inside the squigs mouth? Just some ideas that sprang up in me.

@Scrazza - Any feedback is welcome buddy, have no fear of offending me! I wanted to have the weapons conflict with the armour, and to give the impression that these guys just don't do weapon cleaning. I weathered the front rank using powder from Tamiya, but decided against doing the whole lot. I guess I'm being a bit lazy. Weathering on the weapon handles is a good idea though, so I'll get that done at some point.

@Ratius - Many thanks mate. The BoarBoyz are #3 in the list of regiments to paint. I'm waiting on heads from Maxmini to get them done.

@Vitruvian - Glad you find the squigs funny! I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into these guys. There'll be a few precariously balanced Goblins holding on for dear life!

I've just finished the first layer of milliput on the Squig, pictures will be added later.

Keep the comments coming.

@Vitruvian - Yeah they are really close to sprue, but I got the dremel out and sanded the spue away,so there are no ugly snip marks on the chin. It took a while and the kitchen is covered in dust but it was worth it.

But I'm chuffed with the detail. They'll look mega once they've been dotted around the various regiments.

Well it's that time again. And I've officially become Britain's first Goblin re-homing centre...

Most is WIP, but the Black Orcs and the 40 strong NG horde are considered finished and ready for basing.

On with pictures then...

The 40 strong horde. My NGs have been compared to another organisation that wear white cloaks and hoods!

The Shaman complete with permanent earthing-rod! I keep rolling irresistable casting with this guy, and he ends up taking 20 NGs with him!

Keeping with my nautical/pirate theme, I've added anchors onto the fanatics instead of wrecking balls.

My Doom-diver with scenic base. Lots of snotlings from both GW and Mantic.

Mantic Orcs. Makes a nice change from GW.

Orc Boar Boyz complete with re-vamped Black Orc Big Boss.

My Orc Pirate Regiment, mixed with various members of other games and companies. And also Empire free company as well. My favorite regiment as each member has a name. Such as Websters Bloke,Captain Barbosa,Ned Kelly,Dick Turpin,Choppa Harris,Sally the muffin girl and Tony Martin just to name a few!

My General, after a make over thanks to Maxmini! I haven't decided on a name for him yet.

And the money shot!

So I've been a busy little bee the last few weeks. Still alot more to get done, and I'm painting like a man possessed! It's enjoyable watching the army grow. And even more enjoyable gaming. My ladz have made me very proud (and very upset!) in most of the games we've had as a group (Empire,Dwarves and Chaos the other armies involved). But this blog helps keep me motivated.

I've yet to finish my squig hoppers, my DG still cry out as they are 90% complete. But I'll get there eventually.

I got all excited at the beginning of the thread, amazing Death Guard! You and I share some common philosophies, such as recycling Imperial vehicles and utilizing the eBay Fairy. I loved this line: "I did toy with the idea of getting a alternative DP from, say UltraForge, but it's too nice a model to coat in GS." because what you've done to the GW DP is the best looking conversion I've seen so far, and I have the UltraForge DP and I couldn't cover it w/ GS either.

Glad to see you back, glad I found this thread... sorry you are doing Orcs right now. But I can't throw any stones since I have shelved my Death Guard to work on a Cultist force. We all go where the winds of inspiration scatter us I suppose.

Great stuff. Looking forward to seeing more.

Stand back.....shocking....shocking now...

IT'S ALIVE!

Yes I have returned to my p&m blog! It's been 9 months and 23 days since my last update! Here's what I got done before December the 19th.

Yep, sod all! I've been from Suffolk to Wiltshire, from Hampshire to Brecon,to California USA,and the back to Suffolk. All at the tax-payers expense! Hurrah!

Since I went on leave a week ago back home here in lovely Norfolk,I decided to get amongst my favorite wargaming site. After reading Skalk Bloodaxe's work, catching up on Gitsplitta's Mantis Warriors and more amazing p&m threads (sorry not to name you fine gentlemen), I thought it was time I bothered my arse into finishing my Death Guard.

So here's what we have at the present

And I finally finished my second Terminator Squad

He just needs a clear base and the Ork head painting.

Not bad considering I haven't picked up a paintbrush in 9 months!

But nay! I hear you cry, that can't be all! No Sir's, I answer. I have been amassing a small backlog of items to add to this ever-growing beast.

Yes that bloody Daemon Prince needs finishing! And in addition endtransmission very kindly traded me some Rhino's. Tah very much buddy

I'm looking for a way to jazz up those GW Plague marines (to be honest they're not the best models) as I have a stock GW squad already.I don't fancy buying another FW kit as I already have one. So I'll be buying kits from various companies to spruce up CSMs, plus plenty of greenstuff.

Here's my WIP Sorcerer.

I wanted to give him a more dynamic action pose, so I'm working on him casting some henious curse. I think he's coming along nicely.

So whats in the pipeline? Well I'm trading DKOK for a crap-ton of SM bikes, two Rhinos and a Landraider. I'm really looking forward to making DG bikes! And one of my close friends has decided to part with his massive CSM army, which we've done a mate's rate deal on, which includes another 2 rhinos,a vindicator,2 LRs, another Dreadnaught and about 50 CSMs! Lots of work and lots of DeathGuard potential.

So points value-wise, I 've gone from 2000pts to nearly 5500! Wowsers!

Oh and a big thankyou to Yggdrasil on the OSL tutorial

Thanks for looking,

Bash

So after a couple of days boozing with the family, it's back to the matter at hand. The Sorcerer. Before:

And now here he is, minus his clear base:

I'm rather chuffed with how he's turned out. I wanted him to look 'untainted' compared to his comrades,as if his powers kept him preserved, while still sporting the plain, unadorned armour that the Death Guard wore.

Now I'm in the middle of building my fifth 'counts as' Dreadclaw Drop pod. And I'll show you my new toys when I get them tomorrow, hurrah!

He looks great, but he is not dirty enough to be a Death Guard. Even if his powers do keep him from getting diseased he needs a bit more weathering, or something else. He looks a tiny bit plain at the moment, he needs a little something more. Try adding another contrast colour to the armour, say purple or maroonish red. It needs something more to make it pop unless that's not what you want. BTW nice OSL and great rust effect!

HAPPY NEW YEAR DAKKA!

So with a bottle of Strawberry Koppaberg down the hatch, I think it's time to post what I've been upto today. Taking Flying Pooo's advice, I dabbled with my Sorcerer. What do you think?

I didn't want to dirty him up, as I like my Death Guard to wash their hands before eating, but I added a few more cracks to his armour and gave him the Nurgle 'Fly' symbol to tie him in to the rest of the army. As always though, any advice is good advice so keep it coming.

As for expanding this army, ever get the feeling you have bitten off more than you can chew?

We have:
6x Rhinos
2x LandRaiders
1x Predator
20x Bikes
1x FW World Eater Dreadnaught
6x Terminators
3x Squads of CSM
1x Squad of Khorne Beserkers
1x Squad of Plague marines

Not shown:
Abbadan
1x Squad of Thousand Sons
1x FW Khorne Terminator Lord
1x Drop pod
1x Mk 1 CSM Predator (3rd edition)

All this from swapshop, ebay and pillaging my friends. I've decided I really need to plan what I'm doing. I don't even have a bloody army list at the moment! So the next few days will be planning what I'm going with this little lot. But first, it's time this lot bathed in Simple Green.

@ Flying Pooo - Many thanks mate, I'm much more pleased with him now. Cheers for the advice

And so a bit more got done today,

Here's the FW Khorne Dreadnaught, stipped of all Khorne Iconography. Some of you may self harm at the sight of such butchery, believe me I didn't enjoy taking the Dremel to him, but bear with me. I'll do him justice and he'll fit right into the DG, as if he always belonged there! I've blu-tacked him into the pose I want, and his feet have been pinned (the previous owner caked him in superglue). Once I'm happy, I'll get started on the GS.

The second of six Rhinos. Black undercoat,3 thin coats of Rotting Flesh, then washed in Devlan mud. Drybrushed with Bleached Bone, then all the detail is added. The picture above just shows the base coat complete.

The first of six rhinos. I bashed together the twin-linked bolter for the hull. This is the pre-weathering stage. Once the weathering has been done, then all thats left will be the head and rear lights (OSL).

And a better view of the Death Guard legion badge. It needs a bit more work (highlights etc) but overall I'm happy with the results so far.

Tomorrow will be all about stripping the CSMs and the remaining tanks. The last drop-pod has been undercoated and is ready for base coating.

As always, comments/advice/tips are very welcome. Enjoy,

Bash

That Dreadnought will look awesome amongst your DG. The Rhino looks nice too but it has the some problem the sorcerer did; it's looking a tiny bit bland. Maybe you should incorporate red as a complementary colour on all of your stand out characters and vehicles to make them a little less bland. Also this is one of the cleanest death guard vehicles I've ever seen, it could use some weathering and disgusting growths and nurgley stuff. That being said, amazing work on the symbol on the top hatch, (freehand I assume), very well done! Also the armour itself Looks very nice, Also great weathering.

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2012/01/02 13:07:32

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@ Flying Pooo - You're right about needing a spot colour. I'll still use red, but I'll have a think about how I'm going to apply it to my vehicles. The DG symbol is free-hand. I'm still quite new to the world of free-hand, but I'm pleased with the result. As for nurgle-ly corruption, I've had a few comments about how clean my DG are! I like treading that fine line between the green, gooey, mutated DG style, and the clean, crisp feel of Pre-heresy DG. I won't be slapping GS and gaping maws onto my tanks anytime soon, but the weathering will be reasonably heavy. Thanks for the advice though mate. I really appreciate it.

Quite a bit done today. Been working on the Dreadnaught this morning. Here's where I got about 9 this morning (I've been up since 6:30 as my son is an early riser )

Just some basic assembly. The Auto-cannon was abit tricky, but it's been pinned and GS'd into place.

And the first part of the GS went on. Once it's set, I just need to do the other side of the chainfist and finish the powerplant. I'll also add a small amount to the chest to tie it all together.

Yeah, I don't really like the full nurgle pimpin that others sculpt on their DG vehicles either. Some look terribly disgusting ! Although some do it tastefully and it looks rather nice.

Your DG are very tastefully done sir. They are modelled well enough to set them out as Death Guard and then painted in a way that does not make them look too disgusting like some others do. To me the disease and decay is still there but does not detract from the wonderful paint job and the beautiful models themselves.

In short your DG are Very nice!

I can't wait to see that Dread painted he looks very nicely modelled!

After destroying the kitchen table and my lungs with weathering powder and cheap value hairspray, I think I'm just about done with the first Rhino:

Just need to finish a few things and she'll be game for a laugh. Tonight I'll finish the base coat on the 2nd Rhino and the drop-pod, plus finish the GS on the Dreadnaught. Quite a bit to do, but I'm hoping to keep this work-rate up to break the back of the amount of armour I've got.

Well update number three today, you lucky people you! Don't get used to it though, I do actually have a job despite my 'hobby' underneath my user name. So the Dreadnaught is assembled and ready for under-coating.

And the first Rhino is complete.

More tomorrow men,

Bash

Love the dread. Can I make one suggestion/request? Drill a hole all the way through the right leg? Shouldn't be more tgan a quick job. Then, have it painted as a suppurating wound. Also, love the weathering on the tank. Who needs a kitchen table anyway? Kids can eat off the floor. Frequently do, in fact.

You mean at 90 degrees, through the shin armour? Lol about kids eating off the floor, mine does. Well he has to fight the dog for his food. I call it 'meal or no meal'.

@ CaptainSolstice - I'll get a step-by-step done later this evening.

@ Vittruvian XVII - Good to hear from you again mate and thanks very much!

@ Arm.Chair.General - Many thanks mate!

@ Flying Pooo - Cheers buddy! I think the weathering is coming along nicely.

So the Dreadnaught is primed and ready for base coat. My second Preadator arrived today. After seeing that it had about 6 (!) layers of paint on it, I just dumped it straight into the soup that the rest of the troops are sat in. I'll leave it for a few days before I bring myself to look at it again.

And I finished the second Rhino:

Now looking at it, I'm not happy with the OSL on the second rhino. Looks streaky to me. Well nothing a bit of paint and a blowtorch can't fix....

@ Vitruvian - I do like the work that the guys have done on the other DG P+Ms, with all the goo and slime. But I prefer to break from the norm and have a more cleaner look to this lot. Not including my dreadnaughts though. They get nurgled.

I've rectified the abomination that was the OSL on the second Rhino. We'll have no more of that. I'll post a picture up tomorrow. And I'm going to have to postspone the step by step guide on my GS work until tomorrow.

Brilliant work! I like this thread a lot. Your GS work is inspired and very well done, a fitting tribute to Papa Nurgle and the spirit of the Death Guard.

I'm all caught up now and really looking forward to more!

@ Flying Pooo - Tah very much buddy!

@ Skalk Bloodaxe - Many thanks mate! Lol I did notice you had posted on here way back, but it was a long time ago. As for inspiration, it was your plog that inspired me, so thankyou very much for kick starting me into this project again. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy modelling as a whole.

Not a lot to report today, though I have been busy scrubbing like an abused housecarl! I got all the troops out of the 'sheep dip' (1/1 solution of Dettol, a household detergent) and went at them with a toothbrush! About an hour later, and they're back in the soak (Ariel washing detergent) to breakdown the Dettol and get them ready for drying and priming.

I'm working on my step-by-step now and that will be on here in a few hours,

Bash

Automatically Appended Next Post:
As promised to CaptainSolstice, I've hammered out a quick step-by-step on how I make my nurgley goodness.

I use an assortment of re-conditioned dental tools (courtesy of my dental nurse missus!):

After mixing a small amount of GS and placing it on the model (I'm using a blank base for demonstration purpose), I take the tool with a ball-tip (it's proper name is a ball-burnisher):

Using this, I dip the tool into some water (to prevent the tool from sticking to the GS) and make a mixture of shallow and deep indentations into the GS. I also use the ball-burnisher to drag the edges of the GS, to give the impression that the GS is part of the model, rather than just slapped on. Here's what I've done so far:

After that, take the pointy tool (called a probe):

And again, dip the tool in water and make small groups of little holes. I also use this to make nurgle symbols in the GS:

And thats it. Dead simple. But looks effective. I did this technique on a Tau Fire Warrior:

Enjoy,

Bash

@ CaptainSolstice - Yeah it is easy. I don't mess about mate. I can just about operate simple hand-tools on a good day. so an easy to do GS technique is exactly my cup of tea!

So today has been quite productive, in between trying to potty-train my son (he's nearly 3. We've got the #1 bit locked down,it's the #2 bit we're struggling on).

What I got done today:

Dreadnaught base-coated,along with the Drop-pod. All ready for the next stage.

I'm working on a little side project. A friend at work also plays CSMs.After watching him buy and build a vast amount of grey plastic, then proceed to leave them in a cupboard for nigh on 6 months, I thought I'd help him along by painting a tac squad in the colours of 'The Reborn'.
He was chuffed to bits and asked if I would paint his lord. I said yes and after looking at him for a couple of days, I decided to change him about a bit (He was built exactly the same as the lord on the box cover, very boring)

So after fighting through my bits box, I decided to go with this look:

Why is he dragging about a grot? Because he can. Plus it makes me smile. So I'll add a bit of GS to fill some of the gaps and then get priming.

And I also finished my third Rhino today (First on the left)

Mate, your work is fantastic! Who wouldn't be inspired by the sheer mass of Plague Marines and that LandRaider! I have been following your plog for a few months now. It's mega!

Now that I've said that, I'll have to do something manly, like spitting...

As the the Nurgle Broth, help yourself to a spoonful buddy! You'll stink like a hospital for the rest of your days. I think all the bacteria in my body have suffered exterminatus at the sheer amount of Dettol I've breathed in!

@ CaptainSolstice - Yes they must! It's in the manual 'Chaos Lordship for Dummies'.

As for today, the troops that were soaking overnight in detergent have passed their trial, and so are ready for entering the ranks of the DG:

Now I just need to start prising heads off (I'm using ChapterHouse and MaxMini heads). The Preadator is having an Autocannon instead of the TL Lascannon (I prefer the look). The 2nd Preadator is in detergent as we speak, and should be ready this evening.

And just to remind myself where I am with this project, I took a groupshot of whats been completed (minus a couple of bases):

It's looking pretty good. No rest though. Not yet.

And I didn't show the conversion for my Terminator with the Reaper Autocannon:

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@ Flying Pooo - The Autocannon conversion was pretty easy to do. I wanted him to be a bit more 'meaty' like the Space wolf assault cannon terminator. I enjoyed making the CSM Lord. I'm looking forward to getting some paint on him.

No pictures tonight as I really haven't got anything amazing to show you lot. The forth Rhino is base coated and ready to be washed. The fifth Drop-pod is complete (pictures at a later date). My CSM lord side-project is ready to be painted. And everything else is stripped and good to go. It's just a case of waiting for a few bits to arrive (Heads from Chapterhouse and Maxmini, sponsons for one of the Landraiders and a few strips of GS).

My list of what I'm going to be working on:

Raptors
Bikers
2x LandRaiders
2x Predators
2x Rhinos
3x DG squads
Lord (Not sure to put him on a bike or give him a jump-pack)
Boarding Terminators (I love the idea of these guys!)

So quite a bit to get through. For now, it's bed-time!

@ Gitsplitta - What can I say but thanks very much! I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my plog. Thanks mate!

Had to do a bit of shopping today. Replenised my stock of Rotting flesh and Bleached Bone (the paint, not actual flesh and bones!) and I also bought some Vallejo matt varnish (the GW paints have a slight gloss to them,I've found). I've been painting my friend's CSM Lord today, aswell as the 4th Rhino.

Slightly off topic, but I won't be getting much done tomorrow because of this:

YYYYEEEESSSSS!!!

My Axis and Allies Global campaign kicks off tomorrow! I'm playing as Japan this time round (having won the last game as the Brits! Hurrah!). My Brother-in-law is with me as the Axis powers and two mates are the Allies. As this is set-up in my garage (complete with heating and lights! It's a shame mate because you'd have a good laugh. We're mega-dorks when the garage door is down. The neighbours have inquired on a number of times about the jeering and hollering going on in the garage! I love it!

As for model stipping, I worked on a 1 part Dettol, 3 parts water using a 750ml bottle of Dettol.Oh btw, I got confused with your wants in the DCM swapshop. Did you want SM tanks or the pointing arm for your Lorek? I left a message saying about an old Mk1 Rhino if you're interested.

As for the rest of you 'orrible little lot!

Well what a day! The A&A campaign has kicked off. The British are on their knees but somehow clinging on for dear life. The Soviets are struggling to contain an Axis Blitzkrieg (led by the Italians,of all powers!) and I (playing as Japanese) am having a tough time holding onto the Pacific against the US (For each battleship I sink, the b ds build 3!). Buts it's been mega fun and I'm looking forward to next weekend.

On topic, I've been working on my Predator today for a change of pace:

I didn't like the idea of a Rhino with an armoured turret. Plus I'd feel lazy just painting it. I had a play about with few ideas. I changed the position of the lascannon and added a targeting module to the side, plus put on some sheets to change the hull. What do you guys think?

@ Flying Pooo - Thanks mate. The CSM is going fine. I just have to finish his eyes and the final layer of highlights (the OSL is too dark for my liking) and then the base.

I like the idea of a Predator w/ the single turret, they look very cool and more like a "tank". The only downside is it takes just 1 "weapon destroyed" result and you're driving around a Rhino that can't carry troops. I suppose you can Tank Shock or use it as mobile cover for your advancing troops, but (to me) it's 105 points of nothing at that point.

But like I have much to talk about. Every time I've played a Rhino in 5th Ed it's gone by turn 3 at the latest. I have terrible luck w/ them. I haven't played any in quite a while because of that.

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2012/01/10 11:20:48

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@ Skalk Bloodaxe - You're not wrong about the risk of getting a 'weapon destroyed' result. But I prefer the look of my army rather than the performance. I like the profile of the predators without the sponsons on. The same applied to my LRBT when I had IG. Plus I'm not a serious gamer, not by a longshot. I just have a laugh. And I know what you mean with badluck with Rhinos. I usually have them popped by turn 3 aswell. I just need to build more!

It's been a while, but I've finally found time to update my plog!

I've gotten quite a bit done over the past few weeks. On with the pictures!

Here's my WIP Lord w/ Jumpack. He's coming along nicely despite me breaking his scythe as I got him out of the box to take a photo!

Here are my Raptors. Kitbashed and GS'd Sanguinary Guard. It took ages gently removing the BA iconography. The scythes came from the VC wraiths and Zombies kits. I'm really pleased with the way they've turned out.

Bikers. I tried to make the bikes 'less wholesome' compared to the loyalist versions. The helmets are 'Beaky' helmets, with the nose cut off, to try to make them similar to the Ferrum helmets.

Land Raider. Nothing fantastic happening here. Imperial markings were removed, minus the tracks, as I'll be replacing them completely thanks to inpiration from Skalk Bloodaxe's awesome LR conversion. So until the tracks arrive, not much will be going on with this little number.

My DG dreadnaught. I've been quite slow painting him as he's finished in terms of fabrication. But he's getting there.

The DP is finally getting done. It's only been two years since I started him! I started again on the scythe, as I wanted to give it a more solid look. I've also started a tenticle as I felt he wasn't quite corrupted enough.

Four Rhinos. Nuff sed!

The Predators. I really enjoyed the hazard striping as I've had nightmares with them before. But the work paid off and I really enjoy the look of these two. So much so that I got another 2nd ed Predator WIP to take the total up to three.

For my birthday, my son got me an Iron Warriors Warsmith (the missus got the wrong intel!) Anyway, I thought I'd paint him. Then I got thinking...

And gave him a squad! Kit bashed from BA Death Company, Khorne Beserkers, SMs and CSMs! Then I got thinking...

And gave them some wheels! So now I have a Iron Warriors detachment for my DG Company. I really enjoyed painting IWs as it was a nice break from DG. And I'm really fighting the urge to expand them. I will finish this army!

So this is were I left off.

And this is were I am now.

Not bad for a months work. I still have:

1 Land Raider
1 Predator
2 Squads of PMs
3 Rhinos
1 Drop-pod (for the Iron Warriors)
2 (More!) Daemon Princes!

So still a ton of work to do but I'm getting there.

Enjoy,

Bash

@ Gits - Haha I get your meaning, and thanks very much mate. Still got a way to go but it's coming together nicely.

@ graven - Thanks bud. Yeah I had to capitalise on the epic missus fail! But to be honest, I really enjoy the IWs. As for the weathering on the LR, I used Devlan mud, which had been left under a heat lamp to thicken up, then painted it on with controlled strokes rather than the usual 'carpet bombing' technique that I employ! Oh BTW, Your package will be in the post tomorrow morning.

It's the gift that keeps on giving at Dakka, someone else turned me onto Machinator about a year or so ago, I'm glad he's still doing what he does and glad people are still keeping him motivated by sending him business.

Looking forward to seeing what horrors you visit upon that Land Raider!

Hurrah! It's been a while, but I've found time to update this here plog. After having a break from p&m'ing myself almost half to death, here's what I gotten done over the last 3 months:

My new(ish) gang for Necromunda, the 'Broadland Runners'. Recycled from old Cadians, Black Scorpion and Hassle Free miniatures.

My Necromunda Bounty Hunter. I stole his camo scheme from my brother-in-law's gang. Works a treat.

Here's my WIP display stand for my first Necromunda gang, the 'Butcher Barbies'. I'll post more photos when it's all done.

And after that little lot, I've been going back the the DG this past week, tying up loose ends before starting on the next batch.

The FW dread. All done.

WIP LR. Toying with freehand.

Raptors. All done.

DP. Finally, after nearly three years, he's almost finished!

And my Jump pack Lord.

So quite a bit has gotten done. I can almost see a glint of light at the end of the tunnel. We'll see how long that lasts.

Welcome back Bash the Bosh!
Your Necromunda gang is looking great. They're a nice mix of different minis but somehow they fit together nicely as a whole. I really like the old cadian minis.
I really like the Bounty Hunter, how did you make him?
The display stand is shaping up nicely too.

The FW dread is really top notch. That weathering on the Autocannons(?) is really good.

The freehand on that LR is outstanding, awesome work there. Those DG Raptors are great too. I really like the use of Sanguinary Guard which you have nurgled up to a suitable level. The jump pack lord will look great in their squad too.

The Daemon Prince is looking good, but that blue (although well executed) just stands out too much IMO. I'd have used a more pinkish colour.

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2012/05/28 20:19:24

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@ Flying Poo - Thanks for the comments mate as always. The Bounty Hunter was just a kit bash of a Cadian legs and torso, FW DKOK Grenadier Arms, a 'Berlin or Bust' German sniper head, Catachan back pack. and topped off with a Tau pulse rifle!

The Necromunda gang again was put together by digging out old models from the bits box, and also a few buys from ebay. But they look pretty good, and those plasma weapons have caused some hurt to thier opponents!

As for the DP, I did toy with the idea of a pink tentacle, but I thought it came across too garish for my likng. The camera flash has made the blue look alot brighter than it actually is.But I do have another project on the cards, so I'll take up your advice for the next DP (yes another one!)

Take it easy,

Bash

So after three years and six months, I've decided to pick up a paintbrush, and dig through what scraps of modelling and miniatures I had left after selling my Death Guard, Orcs and Goblins, Necromunda, paints, bits and pretty much everything else.

It's been great pursuing other interests. And it was nice not being hunched over a paint palette, turning out figure after figure. But the bug has come back, and I've made a few purchases from FW, to start a new pre-heresy Death Guard army.

I know, I know, ANOTHER HH army. But I couldn't help it. After seeing all the new goodies that FW have released, my bank balance took a good beating. And it enjoyed it.

So in preparation for a tonne of resin goodness to turn up, I thought I'd have a little play and practise on a figure I've owned for years, but never actually painted up until now. Don't ask me who he is or where I got him from. I've slept since then.

So ignore what you've seen previous in this blog. It's all gone. Probably broken up, repainted, and generally treated worse than a refugee.

Many thanks,

Bash

Hello guys! Ygg, Graven, I'm totally overwhelmed that you guys remember me. It's genuinely put a smile on my face.
It's difficult to describe, but not painting and modelling, well, it felt, wrong. I have a busy mind. I'm an introvert. I'm pretty sure almost everyone on here can associate with that in some way.

But yes, I've succumbed to the temptation of FW's HH Death Guard. I've ordered a few bits that I liked:
x2 MKII crusader armour squads w/ DG upgrade kit
FW Typhus
Deathshroud Terminator Squad
2 FW MKII Rhinos
DG Contemptor Dreadnought w/ Autocannon and power/flamer gauntlet.

So a good amount of resin to work with. Not sure what direction I'm going with this, as I don't plan to game anytime soon. I'm just going to bulid and paint, and really scratch this itch until I'm back in that zone that we all know too well.

Bash

If you plan on doing some weathered DG, just look at the sponge weathering technique.... It's easy as hell, and looks wondrous !

Good luck with those

(Hey that's Dakka... Of course some guys WILL remember you !)

Ok. I've changed my mind.

So I've cancelled the DG from FW. I had a good think about what I actually want to do. SMs, yes. DG. Not really this time. I have a deep affinity for the boys of Nurgle, but I do want to try loyalists for once. 40k universe. And so after 3 mugs of tea, Motorhead playing loud enough that the deaf lady next door banged on the wall, and the power of Google, I've finally found the chapter I want to use as my first proper SM army:

Yes, I've gone for the Mentors. Or Mentor legion. Having read the fluff on around 45 chapters, these guys just flicked a switch for me. Small, intelligent war-fighting, clandestine, pro-technology, troubled founding. It's all there for exploration and expansion. I love the idea of these guys, well, mentoring. PDFs, training and developing other chapters and testing whatever the techs on Mars cook up.

So, having reviewed my approach to modelling and painting and all things fluffy, what I need now is a bit of a plan on what I would like this little lot to turn out like.

Having read up on the fluff, it turns out that these guys like their wet-work and black ops. Counter-terrorism and government changes are all in a days work for the Mentors. I'm thinking dark urban colours, with lots of OSL. Some PDF liaison officers, local informants, spook addicts etc. Wheeled vehicles and skimmers for quiet insertions in busy residential areas. Silenced firearms, knives, refuse sacks and a DNA removal team. (I added an extra scoop of my pre-workout powder to my shake. That stuff is like health-crack. I can smell colours and see noises). Then a few prominent Mentors that have served with other chapters to make up a command squad. So a few differing colours, maybe a shoulder pad or a helmet to show service.

Rather than use the regular GW scouts, I'm thinking light-armoured SMs. I'll have a think about that. Maybe sketch out some ideas. I want to also have a 'hard-knock' SM team, using the breach/boarding SMs from FW. Besides, I love the models.

So for now, here's what I've kind-of thrashed out:

Liaison Officers to make up command squad
'Soft-knock' wet-work squad
'Hard-knock' Breaching squad
Wheeled vehicles (might go for the Tauros Venator)
Skimmer (scout land-speeder?)
Scout-like sniper team
PDF/informant figures.

That's all I've got for now. Please comment if you have any ideas or advice.

Bash

P.S. @ Ygg - Just seen your post. I'll be definitely trying that idea out. And thanks mate, it genuinely means alot.

I might still have a couple of my custom owl pads for them. They were always my favourite chapter go space teachers!

They're the high tech R&D marines, equipped with vortex missiles, time shifters, targeting webs and other cutting edge magic-tech. I used trimmed chimera tracks as data slates for them, iirc.

@ Graven - Wow! I'm assuming thats WD 98. I had seen about that on the web, but forgot to have a better look. That's awesome. And you're not wrong, it's all about tech. Whatever gives the edge in combat, they've got an app for it. Tbh, I'll take anything off your hands if you're happy to send it my way. I'll happily cover postage and whatever you want for them. All I have is one CSM, who's been my test model for the last decade, a sad biker marine, eight heads from a random third party company, and a RT bolter. Oh and the Bulldog that I painted yesterday. So yes, a sorry state of affairs to in.

I did, however, find this:

Now, I'm no believer in fate. I do believe in 'Synchronicity'. The occurrence of unrelated events that fall into perfect chronological order. Now after searching through the wreckage of my memory banks, I do have the recollection of making my own Mentor Terminator for Space Hulk. The fact that I had kept this, after expunging my entire collection, only reinforces my decision that the Mentors are calling me.

Scary stuff. Like Critical Mass failures. Or the female orgasm.

Being British, there's no stopping me in attempting to bodge my way to starting this project. So grabbing a tank brush, some vallejo foundation white, and my ever-faithful CSM tester man, I started on making him Mentor legion:

Unremarkable, I know. He's had that many coats of paint, he's almost entirely smooth.

But what else have I been up to since I've been away, I don't hear you asking. So may I present my entire collection of vintage Transformers. A lot of hunting went into getting all of these, especially trying to get hold of bloody boxes and polystyrene inserts. They cost more than the figures half the time. If only I knew the value of vintage printed cardboard in 1990...

Much love,

Bash

Find your on again off again posting quite amusing for some reason. But am looking forward to seeing your Mentor project come to fruition. It sounds really cool.

Just by way of a quick update, I've ordered my first wheeled vehicle for my Mentor 'Soft-Knock' team. I'll have a play around with it, but it looks great.

^That's a cute little bug love it. And some G1 collection! Do I spy a metroplex? One of my mates is a collector, but isn't overly precious - imagine my kids' joy when they got to play with his Scorponok! And you've even got springer's sword to stand up!

I shall hunt out Mentor stuff for you. That was indeed a serendipitous find! I don't what I still have, I sold mine en mass to a friend to complement his BTs (with whom they have a fluffy friendship - they are iirc allowed to wear the chains that show they have been admitted to His presence). I had plasticarded their neck pieces to make them Mk8. The other thing I had considered was using BA/GK wrist mounted weaponry as they also seem more ultra-tech. I certainly still have the jetbikes though, done up as scout bikes - they're in bits but there should be a squad. You can just help fund my Batman habit

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, alternatively mk4 - the original ultra tech armour.

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2015/09/08 08:22:51

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@ Graven - Yes Sir, it's soooo much G1 goodness! You certainly do see Metroplex. Also hidden in there is the very rare Japanese 'Zone' Metrotitan, one of only two releases made by Takara in 1990. That's when Transformers really did nearly die off.
I also have Trypticon, who still walks and lights up. Omega Supreme, Scorponok and one of my 'Holy Grails', Overlord, who was only released in Japan and then in Europe.
G1 Megatron and Optimus Prime are both in there, boxed. Shockwave was a real gem of a find, as it was my mother's friend who was having a clear out, and she was going to have a car-boot sale, and sell it for £20! I actually left work early to go back home, got my old dear to call her friend, I gave her £50 as I told her that it was worth a lot more. He couldn't be in any better condition. Apparently her son ( back in 1987) didn't like it because it was purple and looked too much like a girl's toy.
I love little back stories like that.
As for Springer's sword, a vital tool for any vintage Transformer collector is clear nail varnish. My missus has a bottle of it, and it brilliant at tightening up worn joints of figures. I used it on all of the little Throttlebots too, as they were in a really bad way. The other great tool is 'Repro-labels', they're a company that produce original and upgrade sticker sets. So it's no longer a factor to buy figures based on sticker wear, unless of course you were considering having them graded, and that is an entirely different ball-game from regular collectors.
I could only imagine the look on the faces of all the little Gravens! My son was exactly the same when he came over ( he's 6 now)! His little face lit up when he got to make his own Cybertron with all the City-formers in base mode, Omega Supreme whirring round on his track. And it's magical for me. Transformers always will be. And it's amazing to be able to share that joy with my son too. As well as having to learn to play Minecraft (it's actually quite addictive) and Skylanders in compromise!
So, back to the matter at hand. PM me details of what you want, and I'll happily wire across any funds you need for your Batman habit. I'm really, really liking the idea of MKVIII armour. Those neck guards appeal to me. More food for thought.
I've ordered Pedro Cantor as I really like the figure, and spookily enough, he has the wrist mounted storm bolter. I'll have a dig about on evil-bay and see what I can salvage from the warp. See if I can rustle up some MKIV stuff too.

@ Januine - Many, many thanks mate. I hope I do your subscription and time justice.

@ Archer - I wish my sculpting skills were that good. I really enjoyed painting him. I've looked for some more like him, but I've yet to hit the mark. He certainly would fit in with Tau. I was originally going to use him as a squat character for a Necromunda gang that I was in the process of starting, but never finished.

So, as a bit of an update, I went an hour up the road to my home town of Norwich (As Ipswich's GW is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and we lost our local 'Modelzone' store). I went straight into GW and picked up a Landspeeder Storm, and a squad of Scions. A few paints and the obligatory spray paint and GS. I then headed into Toymaster, and had a good chat with the gentlemen serving in there about what I could use as a chassis for the wheeled part of my project. We narrowed it down to a 1/35 Quad Tractor and a 1/35 Soviet BTR. After having a good look and comparing the chassis' of each model to the base of the Landspeeder, I settled for the Quad Tractor. I also bought some cheap pens to rip out the springs for the suspension. it'll be for show, not an actual working system.

So after dry fitting and mixing up some Milliput, cutting down some plasticard, put Busta Rhymes on the Youtube mix, fed the dog and made a brew, I've got this so far:

I've wanted to keep the basic shape of the Landspeeder, but at the same time, make it look like its one vehicle. It's not an Ork Battlewagon! I'm working on this from front to back, so next on the list is fill the big gaps between the Quad Tractor radiator and the nose of the Landspeeder. I was going to use plasticard, but my measuring and cutting is so rusty. Putty and sculpting tools, I'm ok with. So I'll stick with that for now until I stick on the back of the 'Land-Quad'.

Whilst I'm waiting for the Milliput to cure a bit, I'm looking at these Scion heads. I'm going to make HMNVS (Helmet Mounted Night Vision System) for them. They're monocle systems, now redundant in the current British Army, as they've now been replaced with the even worse LUCIE system. But they look very, very cool. This isn't my image. Just pulled it from Google.

So that's the plan so far. I'll probably update again later tonight as I dither around with various things at at once.

@ Gitsplitta - Thanks for that buddy. I'm really bad at seeing negatives in my work (don't we all?), but positive reinforcement always keeps me going. It kind of reminds me of the British Army 'Husky' that we used in Afghanistan. Not my image, pulled from Google:

I'm not aiming for this look, but it's good to have a rough template from which to keep to.

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@ Graven - Thanks mate. After seeing your Mentors on your blog, it's really helped me visualise the Legion and given me inspiration.

So after a nice mug of 'Gunfire' (a British Army drink consisting of tea with a tot of rum in it) which loosened me up from a day of bartering and trading, I cracked out the rest of my Land-quad:

So my sculpting hasn't diminished as badly as I thought. It's certainly passable for me. So I'm going to stop there, and let the Milliput cure, then smooth out the divets with GS, then start on the rear of the vehicle.

Tomorrow's plan then is as follows:
1) GS the cab and front end of the Land-Quad
2) Finish building the chassis and fit lights, bumpers (Fenders)
3) Start the rear crew compartment
4) Possibly start GS'ing the monocles for the Soft-knock team

To be honest, I'm surprised I got anything done with this dork hanging around:

This is my dog Jack. He gets called every name under the sun other than Jack, as he is a naughty, stubborn, lovable idiot. He's going through his early teens now, so he sulks when he gets told off, and howls at me when I'm getting dressed.

That's all for now,

Bash

Devils they can be.....but a devil I couldnt live without!!!! Loving that mesh of the land speeder cockpit with a quad chasis - genius idea. Looks rugged as hell - could drive to 'The Eye' and back on a single tank of petrol with enough left over to pick up th shopping!!!

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2015/09/09 14:18:29

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@ Januine - You're completely right mate, he is truly one of the family. And as for the Land-Quad, it does look rugged. It's the look I've been after. I'd love one of these to go grocery shopping in! It would upset a few people if I chucked this in the parent and child parking bay!

Quick update before I spend the afternoon with my son.

Got the back of the Land-Quad started. I used the rear half of the Quad tractor cab, and milliput'd the missing panels in. I used the back half of the Storm to give it that Land-speeder look still.

I used some of the ancillaries from the Storm to complete the front end of the cab.

And I fitted the pen springs to the chassis. They've compressed nicely, and add that little bit of extra detail. They're mostly hidden by the tyres and mud guards, so I won't need to go into too much to make them integrate with the build.

And now that the basic build is done, I improvised a clamp from a silicone gun, and a few hair bands and elastic bands to hold it all together whilst it sets. Once its concrete strong, I'll GS all the milliput smooth and start with extra details, such as grab handles, rivets and a whip antenna.

Please excuse the mess. I've been so excited to start this project, I've operated most of my home from this very corner of the living room!

Have a great afternoon guys, I'll add more once I get back tonight!

@ Graven - Thanks dude. And you're very welcome to the idea. That's the joy of blogging, share and share alike!

Just a quick update. Finished filling the massive void at the back of the Land-Quad. Also added a few details such as rivets and grab handles. I've dry fitted the Heavy Bolter for now, as I won't add it until properly until the crew are done. Tester man is kindly modelling for me to show how much of a beast this thing is. Very apt for a insertion/kill squad.

Going to be adding mud-flaps to the rear, and maybe some Jerry cans. Haven't decided if I want the deep desert operation look for what is essentially an urban operation team. Going to be adding the whip antenna tomorrow.

I did score myself another regular Land-speeder and a regular plastic Dreadnought from eBay. Got the pair for £15 (feel free to convert that into your nation's currency). So another Land-speeder to kit bash. Might have to use the 1/35 Ferret armoured car I spotted the other day.

That's it for today. More tomorrow.

This post is quite picture heavy, as I've managed to get quite a bit done today.

So I got started on one of the monocles. Once it's set, I'll finish the helmet mount.

I'm really liking the Scion kit. It fits in really well with my idea of a Mentor hit-team. I also got started on one of the team members. He's on the comm-link. I've stretched out a thin guitar string for the cable from the handset to the Vox.

Weapons have been commenced. I've slimmed down the bolter, and used the stock from the Scion Lasgun as a suppressed muzzle. I've fashioned an ACOG sight from the muzzle of the Lasgun. I'll GS the mounting rail and fixing points once it's dry. I'm also thinking of a hand-grip fixed to the underside of the stock.

Finished the details on the Land-Quad. I decided against any 'deep desert' fixings, as this will be painted in an urban theme. However, being an ex-soldier, I know that when it comes to vehicles, there's never enough room for kit. So it was quite amusing hanging day-sacks on the sides. I fitted the rear mud-flaps and applied some nicks and bumps. The whip antenna has been dry-fitted. I'll wait until the vehicle has been painted before fitting it properly. I've taken a picture of the suspension, as it's not obvious in the other pictures.

I've also primed a Black Scorpion figure to use as one of my informants. He's rather heavily armed for an informant, but I've wanted to paint this figure since I bought him 3 years ago!

That's pretty much it for now. I'll be working on the monocle for this rest of this evening, so I should have an update later on.

Just a final post for tonight. Finished GS'ing the monocle mount and strap. Photos aren't great, as I really need to invest in a decent daylight lamp for evening photos. I did build myself a quick DIY lightbox, which I'll field test tomorrow. The Missus thought I'd well and truly lost it when she got home and found me surrounded by shredded white t-shirts and cardboard. The dog had fun attacking stray cardboard.

Seeing as that I can't sleep. I thought I'd write a bit of fluff for my 'Soft-knock' team. This is the first time I've ever done this, and I have Gitsplitta to thank for the inspiration.

A quiet day was too much to ask.

Enforcement Sergeant Teven's lip sneered in disgust. It wasn't the sight of death that bothered him. Forty-two years in the force had hardened him long ago. It was the smell. The sweet stench of cooling cauterised human meat almost overpowered him. The shots were precise. Three in total. At the optimum range to allow the micro-warhead of the bolter shell to arm and detonate on impact. Against the unarmoured and unshielded bodies of Governor Toombes and Administrator King, death was instantaneous. And if had the house-carl hadn't of entered the corridor leading to the study, he would still be alive, rather than spattered along the far wall.
Teven turned to Clay, who had just got off the vox to the station. He looked tired. Being a new parent was tough, and being comm-linked at 4 in the morning just added to the strain.
'I already know the answer' said Teven 'but I'm going to ask anyway. Any witnesses?'
'Uniform are to talking to the rest of the house staff, but so far, nothing.' Teven rubbed his aching eyes. They'd been at the Governor's residence for an hour. They'd been called in to investigate after being alerted by an Enforcement patrol. One of the servants found their colleague in the top floor corridor. Well, most of him. The shell had hit him in the shoulder, tearing off his left arm and most of his chest wall with it. What was left of his respiratory system was caked up the wall, destroying a picture that was worth more than Teven's entire retirement policy.
'Boss', called Clay, 'it's Central on the Vox. They want to talk to you'
Being voxxed by Central was always an ill omen. But considering the importance of two of the victims, it didn't really surprise Teven.
'Sergeant Teven Sir' he uttered in feigned formality.
'Sergeant Teven, you are to follow my instructions exactly as I explain them to you', said the familiar voice, 'do you understand?'
'Captain Powell, what's this about? I'm knee deep in administration stiffs' Teven retorted.
'Look, this has come from much higher than us' said Captain Powell, unable to disguise the unease in his voice. 'A medicae team will be at your location in a few minutes'.
'Why!?' shouted Teven. 'How in the warp am I to conduct an-'
'Sergeant!' barked Powell. 'I don't know exactly who authorised this, and I doubt I'll ever find out. The fact is, that this clean-up has been green-lighted. Report back to your station, handover all documentation and picts to Lieutenant Wiles. He'll debrief you'.
'Sir, I don't understand'
'You don't need to Sergeant. And if I'm honest, neither do I. Powell out'
Teven handed to vox unit back to Clay. The first sun started to creep over the horizon. Clay was still knelt by Governor Toombes, his pict-slate casting a green glow over his face.
'Clay' Teven said, tiredly. 'Pack it up. We're to meet the medics at the front'
'Central's orders?' Clay asked.
'Central's orders'

Powell, still in his training suit, sat in his chair. He looked at the figure in front of him. Even if it wasn't wearing armour, the figure cut an impressive size. The illumination from its eyes catching the reflective surfaces of his gilded pen set. The light unit on his desk allowed him to pick out the deep emerald of it's armour, and the red Raptor on it's breast. Though it's weapons were slung, he had no illusion that it could kill him with a single strike of it's massive fists. And it knew it. Powell cleared his dry throat before speaking.
'It's done. Clean-up is on it's way. Evidence will be planted. My guys will be briefed, and this will get buried'
'Good. We wouldn't want to have to return'. The voice was distorted and tinny due to the helmet's voice module, but clear enough to notice the menace behind it's answer.

That's it. I had fun writing this. Can't say I'd make any money from it any time soon. But to explore another avenue in the whole aspect of my chosen chapter is a real buzz.

Thought I'd chuck a picture up of my primed Land-Quad. I thought I'd try something a bit risky, and new. So I looked up how to do the 'Yeast extract' weathering method in the Dakka P+M article forum. Chaos black base, followed by Tamiya TS-46 Light Sand, then applied yeast extract to the areas I wanted weathered. Then a final coat of Tamiya surface primer (Gray). It'll dry nice and matt, as no military vehicle is ever glossy, not matter how many time you apply buff and shine. I learnt that the hard-way.

@ Januine - Thanks very much mate. It's coming along a lot smoother than I thought. I was dreading that I wouldn't be able to keep up with my ideas of grandeur!

@ MagosBiff90 - Thank you very much for commenting. Now that its had a few coats of paint on it, it's looking a lot more cohesive. I'm glad you like the pen-spring idea. Usually most of my ideas aren't that useful, but this one has worked!

@ Graven - Thanks as always mate

After coating the Land-quad, covering it in yeast extract (I bloody stink of the stuff now, and the dog won't leave me alone), scrubbing it, drying it like a new-born puppy, and then applying a wash, it's looking really rather good if I do say so myself:

Thanks to Tester man for the photo-bomb...

I'll upload some daylight photos tomorrow, as the colours contrast better in natural light. I can't believe the detail of the paint chipping from the marmite weathering. It looks fantastic, and something I'll definitely be doing again. It stinks to high Heaven, but it's worth it. I don't mind marmite. It's not the worst thing I've eaten. Live garden Snails, coins , kinder egg car (that thing bloody hurt on the way down. Who in their right mind puts wing mirrors on them!), and a pint of pee. And no, it wasn't mine.

I'm going add another coat of wash, and then whilst that's drying, start on priming the Soft-knock team.

@ Januine - I've been wanting to try the Marmite weathering method since I first saw it a few years ago. I remember it being in the FW modelling book, but never got round to it. It looks fantastic. Such a clever and simple idea. And better still, no expensive ingredients, or complicated methods. I wish I'd have done this with my old DG army, as it would've complemented the whole feel perfectly.

On another note, my FW Centurian turned up today, so he'll be getting primed and ready for paint in the next few days.

The story was good. Very much enjoyed the image of the shadowy war going on and the poor old investigators caught in the middle.

The quad is coming along really well. Marmite weathering? You are playing with techniques far beyond my knowledge there. Would Vegemite work too?

@ Archer - Thanks for reading the fluff. I didn't want to give my team the limelight, as it's not about them. It's the poor souls who have to tidy up the aftermath. It was fun writing that. Might have to conjure up some more stuff later on.

As for the Marmite, it comes under various guises. Yeast extract, Vegemite, Bovril (at a push). I'd never done anything like this before, so it was a bit of a gamble. But following the 'how-to' guides (I read 4 separate articles), it all paid off. It's so simple, it really can't go wrong, unless the process is rushed. Giving plenty of time for the paint to dry between coats is vital.

After a weekend having my son come and stay, and being Minecrafted to near oblivion (it was fun really), I have finished the Land-Quad.

The transfers are from a 1/35 German Tiger 1, and the Union Flag on the front bumper is from a 1/35 British Warrior AFV. It's really come along way, seeing that I had no real plan in sight. But that's kind of my style. Just a 'see how it goes' approach. I feel that my enthusiasm has shown through on the Land-Quad. The team members will hopefully stand out, as I've got a rough idea how I want them to look.

Just got to finish the Heavy Bolter, to fix on when the gunner is done, and the comms cable going from the signals daysack to the operator.

Thanks Archer for your kind comments. Now that it's all painted up, it's certainly more believable. I'm just amazed at how well the Marmite weathering worked. It added an extra dimension to the texture, and the paint chips add a little depth, making it look like it's been well travelled. I didn't want it to look like it's just been built for one theatre of war. I wanted it to look like it's been well used, and adapted to various roles for the Soft-knock team. I couldn't be more pleased with it.

Also, very cool conversion altogether

@ Gitsplitta - Thank you very much buddy, I'm dead proud of it!

@ ciuncky - Many thanks for taking the time to comment. It's a great and cost-effective method of weathering. I've spent money on expensive Tamiya and ForgeWorld powders. They work really well, don't get me wrong, but for a quick and relatively fool-proof methos of weathering, its fantastic. And the same goes for salt weathering. I'll be trying that out on some of my figures at a later date.

Been a bit of a slow day, with work and all. But I did get one of my five Soft-Knock team members done. I tried a simplified digi-cam on the carapace and helmet, and a generic DPM (BDU) style urban camouflage for the trousers. I got the mixed uniform idea from the USCM in Aliens, as I wanted these guys to look tactical, but at the same time, keep some of the ornate style of SMs.

It's not wet paint, I dropped a dollop of water on his foot when washing my brush! Doh!

I've gone against OSL for now, as he's 'busy' enough for my liking. But I'll see as the squad progresses.

I'm thinking of some more fluff, so I may chuck that in later.

Not much to add today inmygravenimage has been a mega-star in thrashing out a few blinding deals for me, and has sent a tonne of goodies from his awesome Mentor project. So with that and a few ebay scores, I've been chucking a few bits and pieces into the stripping bowl.

A sacrifice worthy of Nurgle himself.

Agreed with Graven, the quad just looks right. The best conversions for me are always those where you have to question if they are a conversion at all, though admittedly yours took a lot of work, it just looks like a model that GW should have made.

Any further conversions planned?

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2015/09/15 23:43:06

Post by: Bash the Bosh

@ Thraxas - Many thanks for the comment buddy. I'm glad that it looks as cohesive to you as it does me. I'm aiming for a wheeled army. No tracked vehicles.

In terms of further conversions, I'm in the process of making another Land-Quad, but using a regular Land-speeder and a smaller, scratch-built chassis using wheels from some recycled SM bikes. That won't be anything ground-breaking, as those types of conversions have been done before. But it will fit into my army theme nicely.
I've also started a rough idea on converting a 1/35 USMC Stryker 8x8 AFV into a 'counts as' Land Raider, but that won't come into fruition until I've finished my current Land-Quad and my Soft Knock team.
So a few ideas in the pipe. It's fun thinking outside the box, and dusting off my conversion skills.

Not much to report today. After looking through some of the goodies that inmygravenimage sent to me, I decided to continue with a great Terminator Librarian conversion that inmygravenimage had started. First thing I decided on was a cape, for science. So using another dakka GS article, I flattened some GS onto some cling-film, crinkled it up, and built a base cape on which I can build up and smooth out fingerprints and unwanted creases.

So whilst I'm waiting for my replacement Land-Speeder (I melted the other one in the nail-varnish remover. Everything else survived, as I took them out after a few hours. I forgot about the Land-Speeder, and it fell into gloop when I finally remembered 12 hours later!), I'm going to be filling in the cracked shoulder-pad, and building a new staff top from some random pieces that I've salvaged, or I may just scrap that and GS him a firebolt of some description.

After tidying out the modelling box, I found this little honey:

I couldn't remember selling old Mad Donna, as she cost me a small fortune. I'm dead pleased with finding her, she'll fit right in with my small number of miscreants and informants. Once she's had a repaint. But that will be later on down the list.

@ Gitsplitta - Thanks mate! I've always had a soft-spot for Mad Donna. Can't say why, she wasn't the greatest figure GW turned out, but it summed up the height of Necromunda for me.

@ Graven - Dude , many thanks as always. I'm hoping to do him justice. Bit nervous at tackling a cape. But so far, so good.

@ Knightley - She's classic mid-90's hair madness! 2/3rd's of the figure's weight is top knots!

@ Archer - Thanks mate. I do prefer helmeted SMs. I could never really get my head around why you'd have a full suit of armour, but not bother to protect what is essentially the most important part of your body.

@ LeCacty - Many thanks for commenting. Have no fear friend, the cape will be worked on further. I'm leaving it until tomorrow, so it's had a good 24 hours to cure. Should give me a firm base to work on.

So I've finished two more members of the Land-Quad team. The Comms operator and another gun-man:

I'm so pleased with how these have turned out. They look like I wanted them to look. Tactical, light, Mean as gak. The Vox operator just sets it all off, feeding information to the team constantly. Two gun-men either side, ready to jump down, turn some poor target into pink mist. I love it. Gives me a warm tingly feeling!

I have you to thank Graven! You started him off. I'm merely finishing what was a great project to start with!

So I've been working like a man possessed this evening. I've watched both the cinema and director's cut of 'Aliens' (I can never watch that film too many times), had a whisky and codeine chaser (Whilst I'll never advocate the mixing of alcohol and prescription medicines, when you're 30 and had your pelvis pinned and screwed back together, you'll understand), I've finished a few modelling tasks.

The Terminator Librarian:

I've put together a Terminator squad. I don't mind if they're not legal for gaming, it's an excuse to buy more. I love Terminators. And thanks to Graven, I have plenty of them to work with:

And for the money shot, I have my finished Mentor Soft-Knock team and their Land-Quad:

I added vapour from my vapouriser for a smoke effect:

So that's it for now. The fething postman decided NOT to knock on my door (I complained to the Royal Mail, after I had stayed in specifically to ensure I got my new Land-Speeder) and just chucked in a 'something for you card' which really pee'd me off. I'm sure it was a drop in guy, as my regular postie knocks on my door, delivers next-door's mail, which gives me time to make it down two flights of stairs to the front door. ANYWAY, I'll be collecting my Land-speeder tomorrow to start my next Land-Quad. I also ordered a Dreadnought, for science.

Graven, my bank account will never forgive you! But a massive thank you mate, it's much appreciated.

Background music provided by the Rolling Stones: Gimme shelter

So a bit of a change in pace. Well, not really. I've been smashing out the conversion work today. Decided to hold fire on the 2nd Land-Quad, as I'm still working out the kinks in the chassis.
But I have been having a play with my new Dreadnought.

I've gone for a bit more of a dynamic pose, as he is very boring just stood there, weapons facing forward. So I've butchered the right knee, and right foot, and brought it up slightly, having him on his front toe. I've also spaced out the left shoulder, and GS'd the gap for stability. I'll tart it up with more GS once it's cured. I've got to neaten up the right knee, adding the damper back in and some guitar string to repair the cabling. I wasn't sold by the stock plates for the sarcophagus, so I added a blank on and I'll add rivets to liven it up. I bought some red primer from my local garage, which will work nicely with the marmite method, as I'll be trying that again with this guy.

I also worked on my FW Centurion.

Quite a deep pose, the more I look at him. Either he's deep in thought, or he's thinking of burying that chain-fist into some poor bugger. Bought the helmet from eBay, as I'm no fan of bare-headed marines. Had to cut down the chin to fit. But I'm looking forward to getting some colour on this dude.

Might have an update later. Might not. Depends how the Rugby goes.

@ Januine - Don't be put off getting him. Overall, he's a great figure. But you're right, up close the head sculpt isn't the best.

@ Gitsplitta - Comments from a gentleman as talented as yourself, mean a lot. Thank you Sir.

Artist - Alterbridge, Ghosts of days gone by. Backing vocals provided by Bash

Just tinkering with the chain-fist on the Centurion. GS'd the gaps, and added a small cable to integrate the whole build into the model:

If I only I could have done stuff like this 20 years ago, instead of using 'Military Muscle Men' as proxies, because I couldn't paint camouflage.

Thanks LeCacty, that's very generous for you to say. As promised, though it's a little late, here's my 'how-to' guide on capes. It's very, very simple. I hammered this out in around 5 minutes.

Green stuff. Most important part:

Then flatten it and fold the round edges into a sort of square:

Get some cling-film/cling-wrap/clear plastic wrapper and place a few drops of water onto it. This still stop the GS from sticking to it. Animal approves this:

Then gently 'accordion' it up into a ladies (or mens) fan concept. This is get some nice creases into the GS. But don't flatten it, as the GS will tear at the fold lines:

Then drape it onto your figure with wet fingers, as your fingers don't need capes (well, maybe). I use a rounded paint-brush handle to flare out the cape edges. I even quickly boshed out a hood for this guy, by tucking in the excess at the top of the cap were it bunched up:

It may sound daft, but getting some heavy linen and draping it over your shoulders will help you get an idea of how the fabric falls. Also googling images of capes helps. Most important advice:
DON"T GIVE UP!
The joy with GS is that if it doesn't work out right first time, you can take it off, roll it up and start again. I had to do the Terminator cape four times before I got it the way I wanted it to be.

Once it cures, it'll give you a good base to work with, smoothing out the crevices and making it pretty.

Hope this helps,

Bash

Music: Blackstone Cherry - White Trash Millionaire

So, GW Ipswich called me to let me know my Pedro Kantor has arrived in store. So I popped in, and left with more than I had intended:

Not exactly bank breaking, but I couldn't resist the new Sternguard. I have no idea how these guys need outfitting for gaming, so I followed the 'rule of cool'. And gave them Combi-meltas, meltas and the best looking bolters. And a scanner. For science. The Pedro Kantor figure is the first model I've owned made of 'finecast' resin. Not the worst material in the world, but scarily soft. I nearly cut the bloody powerfist in half taking off the Crimson Fist motif. But he's free of any obvious connection with his previous Chapter. So he'll be the new Sergeant for my Sternguard.

Finished the Dreadnought:

Just trying to make a simple adjustment to his pose was a flipping nightmare. Cut here, chop there, shave that, greenstuff this gap. It does change his dynamic, but it took all day to do one knee joint. But I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it.

That's it for now kids.

Thanks Graven. Any Dreadnought bits would be great. And any Autocannons would be amazing!

Been working on the 2nd Land-buggy. It's a much smaller profile to work with. I'm not enjoying the fact that the regular Land-Speeder is shorter than the Storm. I had to settle on bike wheels, as they don't look so cramped, though they are a tad smaller than I'd like. But hey, it's the 41st Millennium, I'm sure they'll work in some way. I'm going to put some sprue in the gap between the front and rear tyres, to drop it's profile and make it look less like a roller skate. And fabricate some rear fenders. The front fenders have had some card glued in, as they didn't cover the whole wheel. I'll bulk them out with milliput and smooth them off. From the front, it looks alright. It's side profile isn't great, But it's a WIP, so there's always something to add.

The British Army 'Springer' is a good example of what I'm kind of aiming for. From Google:

Here's my Land-Buggy:

That's it for now. Need to let the milliput cure before continuing with gap filling and panel work. If anyone can spare a SM bike wheel, I'd be very grateful!

The Dreadnought may have been a pain to re-pose, but it was well worth it. Makes me regret not doing more pose altering in the 4 I have for my Iron Hands.

I feel that the second land quad looks a tad top heavy, but will hold my tongue until the rear fenders are in place as I think they may increase the bulk at the rear nicely.

Taking on board all that was suggested. I totally agree with all the points about the profile being too high, and Januine confirming my 'roller skate' theory.

So I've stripped it down and rebuilt the back end.

I feel it works better. But feth me its hard trying to scratch build a chassis and not have it look like a Snotling pump wagon.

Any thoughts? I'm thinking of some roll bars to give the front cab some shape, but not raise the height of the buggy. And also some rear fenders and side skirts.

Looks good, nice progress.

Once the low sides get bulked up, it'll probably lose the board look, and balance the now heavy top.

Maybe something alike to the front girder? (Behold my CAD!)

As per requests from Archer and Gitsplitta, I've done a few comparison shots of the Land-Quad and Buggy, and Tester man lent his services to model the Suppressor 6x6.

I'm really enjoying the way those two size up.

And the Ramshackle Games AFV:

It's a great size. Perfect for my 'Hard-knock' Breacher team. I ordered the parts set from FW, and scored some re-conditioned SMs from eBay, so that'll be another elite squad for the Mentors,

Whoa. I've been away for a little and already 3 pages behind?

All looking good! The Dreadnought seems so weird with his arm at an angle, not sure they were designed to do that in "reality" but looks very cool. Maybe some cables to fill in that empty space would help?

Good job on the cape as well. Falls in place nicely

Bash’s silent disco - Has anyone seen my dog? @ 2015/09/21 18:43:54

Thanks Gitsplitta. It's certainly in the same size bracket as a Rhino or a Chimera.

ciuncky - I've been averaging 3 posts a day on this, but once my holiday is over, it'll be back to normal. I agree that the Dreadnought may not have lateral movement irl, but I just couldn't face building another dread that had its weapons facing forward. He needed a bit more to him. I did think about cables, but I didn't think that having exposed pressure hoses and the like would be be right for a combat unit. So I thought they would be covered in a flexible hose covering. I'll see how it goes once it's primed, but if it looks too plain, I'll chuck in some guitar string.

Yeah...working in games distribution made it super difficult for me to resist getting that. But given i already have a back-catalog, i skipped it. Painting warhammer figs doen't help with the time issue either

But, anyway. It's a cool game. But rules are cruel. You really need to put hours into trainimg and not feel let down by losing the first games. The opposite is available as well, don't get too cocky if you've been lucky - it won't last

Well after a few days cursing and fist-shaking at the t.v screen playing Blood Bowl II, and being on the brink of soiling my under-garments playing Alien Isolation, I've gotten a few bits done on my Mentor project:

Base-coated and started weathering on the Dreadnought. Primed in Red, marmite, and then sprayed White.

Primed all of the infantry:

Got the Breacher Squad kit from FW:

Picked up the 25th anniversary 40k Crimson Fist's figure. I'll be re-working the plasma-gun to look like the one from the art-work.

Got some awesome Security figures from Heresy Miniatures. They'll be great as my 'Teven' and 'Clay' characters from my fluff earlier on in the blog. I've started on a GS coat for Teven.

It's been slow progress on the Suppression 6x6 from Ramshackle games. It's fantastic for the price, but it needed A LOT of gap filling and tidying up, pinning and sanding:

And finally finished gap-filling and sanding down on the Buggy:

So plenty done considering I've been Blood Bowling it up!

I'll be keeping the box. I fell in love with that artwork when I first saw it on the side of an 'Advanced Heroquest' box as a child. It's just a slight shame that the figure has a generic plasma pistol, instead of that awesome arm cannon.

Been getting back into my Mentor project the last few days. but first, I found a few gems hidden away in my plethora of junk after moving home for the eighth time:

I've watched this 4 times since I've found it two days ago (I hadn't watched it since I bought it many moons ago). It's terrible, the animation poor, and the storyline more see-through than oxygen. But I really, really like it. It's great because it's so poor. But the voice actors are brilliant in it, with Terence Stamp, John Hurt and Sean Pertwee to name a few.

My Dakka dice! I thought these had gone with all the others, but it seems I was mistaken. I remember these letting me down constantly, including failing an invulnerable save for Typhus against Yarrick. But now I've found them again, no doubt the frustration will continue.

Now onto the P+M bit:

My Ramshackle games 'Rhebok' 6x6 transport is constructed. In terms of quality, the resin is brittle, which is frustrating when trying to remove flash (copious amounts of), there's a lot of gaps and bubbles to fill and some of the parts are heavily warped. BUT, considering the amount of parts, the size and low cost, I think this is fantastic value for money. It looks great, and I'm looking forward to getting some paint on this. I've ordered another, as I'm chuffed with the whole product, and they make a nice change from GW products. Considering a vehicle of this size would cost up to 3x the value from FW, it's a great alternative.

Started the weathering on the Dreadnought. I did a double on the marmite technique. Primed in red, then marmite. Primed again in white, then more marmite, then 3 thin coats of Caliban green. Scrubbed it and this is the end result:

Started painting the Buggy. I wanted to go for a WW1 dazzle camo effect, as I thought the sharp edges of the camo would be great at breaking up the shape, without being too complex and overpowering. I went with the Mentor colours as it would fit in with the uniformity of the army. I need to find a way as to not have the crew 'lost' in the paint work. Still needs a lot of work, but next stage is to finish the base coat before washing:

Started my Sternguard veteran Sergeant (Pedro Kantor). He's coming along nicely, I'm at the base coat stage with the squad. I've gone with dark yellow weapons, maybe some hazard stripes, if the need arises. I'm not sure if it'll go, so Tester man may need to volunteer his services:

So that's it for now. I'm off to meet Ipswich Town's football (soccer) team tomorrow, as part of a visit with 'Band of Brothers' and Help for Heroes, which are charities set up to help wounded and injured servicemen and veterans. If you're in the area, give me a shout, and we'll go for a beer afterwards.

It's that Friday feeling! Unless you work in retail, then it's just another day closer to death.

So I've been making slow, but steady progress over the last few days. Found 'Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic' on my iPad, so I've hammered out 5 hours on that. Can't believe how amazing it still is after nearly 15 years since I first bought it. Won my first online tournament on BloodBowl 2 with my Orc team, the 'Stompa Bay Freebooterz'. The boys did me proud. Won all three games in a 8 team knock-out tourney, with only one Black Orc Blocker suffering a shattered collarbone. Won the final 1-0, thanks to the Skaven opponent throwing in the towel after I killed 2 Gutter-Runners and injured 2 others on Turn 1 of the first half. Great fun!
Also been playing 'Alien - Isolation', which has got to be THE most terrifying game I've ever played. I found myself physically holding my breath (I had noise detection on the kinect), and jumping out of my skin when trying to hide in an air-duct, only to turn around and have that monster in there with me! Such an immersive game, and fantastic with headphones on, though I don't suggest so if you're of a weak disposition/or have a weak bladder.

Anyway, enough rambling. Finished the Plasma conversion on my 25th Anniversary SM. He's going to be the Veteran Sgt of my second Sternguard veteran squad:

Bought myself a RT SM Terminator Chaplin. He is ridiculously small. He's shorter and thinner than my FW Centurian. So I'm thinking of bulking him out with newer Terminator body. He's still a great mold, but he's not even close to being passable at that size:

Started the factory-painting of my SternGuard squad:

(I apologise to my Australian friends for witnessing me drinking Fosters. HOWEVER, it's brewed in Europe by Heineken, so it's not even remotely Australian, and it's cheap.)

And I've finished my SternGuard Sergeant (aka P. Kantor)

That's it for now
