ArbitorIan's FORCES OF THE IMPERIUM

So, this started out as my Adeptus Arbites blog, and is still largely Arbites-based. It tracks the first repaint of my army, and the one I'm currently doing. However, I've expanded it to include all sorts of Imperial forces, mostly because I have so many ready to go - most of which have been languishing in storage for ages. None of these are neccesarily a 'big' army - though some could be an army on their own. I'm gonna put them all in this P&M blog, as a counterpart to my (already massive) FORCES OF CHAOS blog (https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/426461.page).

This should, at some point, include Adeptus Arbites, Inquisition, Assassins, Adeptus Custodes, some Ultramarines, a squadron of Attilan Rough Riders, some random IG, maybe the odd Squat, and loads more.

Table of Contents

Pg1 - First patrol squads - InstaMold cases - InstaMold heads & shoulderpads - First biker conversion
Pg2 - More patrol squads - Shock team conversions - First (small) group shot
Pg3 - Complete biker squad - Repressor frontplate build & mold - Battle report pics - First repressor painted
Pg4 - Repaint and conversion of repressors, sentinels and exorcists
Pg5 - SoB list reboot - Boltgun proctor conversions - Dominion squads - Confessor Kyrinov counts-as
Pg6 - Uriah Jacobus counts-as - Immolators/Castigators
Pg7 - Interdiction Team 'Seraphim' counts-as - Cyberhounds
Pg8 - Vehicle repainting - Vehicle Riot Shield conversions - Throne of Judgement started
Pg9 - Vehicle repainting/new decals
Pg10 - Battle Report links - v1 Arbites Codex - Riot/Suppression Shield conversions, Psy-Marshal

There's indeed a gap in between the two!! I'm curious to see how this will turn out...

On another aspect, what are the main points of the BOLS Codex?

Thanks!

The BOLS Codex is at http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2008/11/play-aid-adeptus-arbites-mini-dex-from.html

Basically, it has all the basic Arbites choices (shock teams, bikes, sentinels, basic guys) but no huge, overpowered choices. They make the army competitive by some interesting special rules and weapons - Gas grenades, Executioner rounds, Power/Shock Mauls are poisoned weapons rather than power weapons. The army then works on a 'reinforcements' theme. Only half the army may set up on turn one, and only Troops and HQ. Every other unit arrives from Reserve. However, many of these units can choose which board edge they enter on.

I've also got a couple of photos of the first five...

For now, I'm going to concentrate on some of the WH units, because I'll be using this as a WH army in the tournament. The list isn't set, but should looks something like this - it's 1500pts and I still have 20 or so to spend on upgrades. The Repressors will be used for the two Shock Teams.

* High Judge on Throne of Judgement (Karamazov)

* Arbitor Shock Team (Inquisitor with PW/Rosarius, 3 Crusaders, 2 Acolytes with Shotguns, 1 Familiar (Cybermastiff))
* Arbitor Shock Team (Inquisitor with PW/Rosarius, 3 Crusaders, 2 Acolytes with Shotguns, 1 Familiar (Cybermastiff))
* Arbites Sniper Operative (Vindicare Assassin)

* Arbites Combat Team [x10] with Bolters and 2 Meltaguns (Battle Sisters) in a Repressor
* Arbites Patrol Team [x10] with Shotguns and 2 Grenade Launchers (Inq. Stormtroopers)
* Arbites Patrol Team [x10] with Shotguns and 2 Grenade Launchers (Inq. Stormtroopers)

* Arbites Support Team [x5] with Bolters and 2 MultiMeltas (Retributors) in a Repressor
* Exorcist

And months later..... I finally do some more!

I've been painting bases. I've amassed quite the horde of different paved bases.

And I've been doing some conversions with some of the Chaos Marauder heads, seeing if I can come up with some suitable arbites-y ones. I picked up some Judge Dredd models from Salute, and I want to do some head swaps to make them fit. They'll also be useful for my Arbites Bikes.

I've chopped the horns off, added some greenstuff to make the facemask more accurate, and then used an old aquila as a headdress. I've got various Aquila bits on order from Bits&Kits for the next batch...

Thanks!

The 25mm bases shown above are the Forgecraft Games waterworks range - the bits that I've painted grey are actually intended to be water. I got them for the tiles, really.

The 60mm ones with the bigger tiles are from a different supplier - I bought a load cheap at Salute this year. I'll dig out one of the packets when I'm back at home and post the manufacturer.

Sorry for the delay! An extra stubber would be lovely - I could attempt to convert one of the regular arbites into a flashlight-headed stubber guy.

I AM make progress, I'm just doing it in bits. The other week I managed to get twenty bases done on one work trip, and now I'm away in Chichester getting the guys done to go on them. Here's a load of retouched arbites awaiting rebasing and finishing when I get back home.

So - progress had been made again - and this time I've been experimenting with casting!

First of all, I had a bit of a painting spree in Chichester the past week, and managed to paint up another two squads. A third squad is almost complete, and then I have to paint their three proctors. Once that is done I'll get some proper squad pics, but for now...

These guys were based with the Wargames Tournaments paved bases that I picked up at Salute, but now I've gone to their website and looked to order more I can't see any bases on there! http://wargamestournaments.com/

Anyway, my next project was going to be some Arbites bikes! I bought six scout bikes and started to build, but couldn't find any similarly paved resin bike bases. So, I picked up some of the new Instant Mold stuff from Darksphere on my way back to London and had a go at making a mold from one of my 60mm bases.

This was my first experience of casting and it was incredibly simple - the Instant Mold really is amazing. You just soak it in hot water for a few minutes until it goes soft, then squish it onto the part you want to copy. It cools in about ten minutes, and then you put some green stuff inside it and make your first castings - no release agent, no mixing, easy!

I was so impressed I decided to try it on some more complex parts, and had a go at casting up some Arbites shoulder pads and helmets.

These were a little more difficult - especially the heads. The casting is easy, it's just difficult to get the green stuff into the mold without trapping air in there too. However, the results are pretty good, and will be fine with a little smoothing and GS love. Here's the first biker - made from a SM Scout Biker kit, cadian torso, and GS cast head and shoulder pad.

So there we go - I'm now casting up enough for the whole squad!

yeah,
woooh that instamolded base looks really good!
I can't tell how good the shoulder pad is but the helmet looks ace.
and those bikes look like the right scale to have popped out of a production line in mega city one!
maybe you should get one of these bikes to copy the front plate!?

How many points are you up to of redone arbites?
Maybe we should set a dead line to get to 1000pts for arbites vs dark eldar?

Yay! Arbites!

I sold off most of my Arbites army and re-painted the rest for my Imperial Guard quite a while ago, but am always delighted to see others doing the Emperor's Enforcers.

I don't know where you live in the London, but the Overlords have a project going at http://thecodexproject.com to develop an Arbites codex.

I helped with playtesting the BOLS codex and, although it was balanced and workable, I never felt that it really captured the distinctive play style that the Arbites needed. the guys at the Overlords are working pretty slowly on theirs, and there's a lot of streamlining that needs to be done, but the essence of the rules and the play-style of the army is much more distinctive.

R.

Panic wrote:yeah,

The shoulder pad is actually better than the helmet - the faceplate has a bit of distortion on the other side, but nothing that can't be fixed with greenstuff. With the base, it's a bit difficult to press mold that size of GS without getting air bubbles, but thankfully they actually look like completely believable cracks and chips in the paving!

Panic wrote:maybe you should get one of these bikes to copy the front plate!?

I have a spare one of those anyway! Once the squad is done, maybe it's time for a Judge On Bike conversion.

Panic wrote:How many points are you up to of redone arbites? Maybe we should set a dead line to get to 1000pts for arbites vs dark eldar?

If I can get finished the stuff I've already started on, 1000 should be fine. And that's without any vehicles (which I haven't started repainting yet!) Maybe end of next week?

Thanks - I'm in East London, and have actually visited the Overlord a couple of times. I took a look at their in=progress codex, but I wasn't that impressed. A lot of the options seemed very wishlist-y - I like the sparseness of the BOLS codex, and the face that the army it creates is very specialised. With the overlords one, i find that you end up with an army that doesn't really have any big disadvantages - they've added a unit that does every job. On the other hand, I like the idea of a lead judge being called Rumpole....

Either way, I'm going to have to re-think it slightly in a few months when this WD Witchhunters one is released!

So, more enforcers arrived this morning. Interesting changes to the set which GW don't show you on their website (which now only has one picture on it).

The set contains 1 x Leader, 1 x Heavy with Stubber, 1 x Cyber-Mastiff and 6 x Enforcers, plus weapon options for 1 x Power Maul & Supression Shield, 1 x Special Weapon Sprue (Plasma, Flamer, Grenade Launcher), 1 x Hand Weapon Sprue (Laspistol, Boltpistol, Plasma Pistol, Grenade, Power Maul) and 2 x Basic Weapon Sprues (Boltgun, Shotgun).

Strangely, you don't get a Cyber-Mastiff Handler in the set any more, but this isn't listed on the website either. Both packs contain one more regular Enforcer than listed on the site, though. It's all fine by me (I need regular Enforcers more than i need character models), but just a bit different from how the set used to be.

Anyway, with all the price rises, the £20.50 price tag (for 9 models and a ton of weapons) is actually quite good value, when compared to the current plastic sets!

In addition, I've taken Panic's suggestion, and I'm going to make up a Judge on a bike as a potential leader, with the front fairing from this model...

However, I'm having trouble thinking of an overcoat-wearing mounted model to use as a base for the conversion. My only thought is a Ravenwing Sergeant, but then he's have power armour legs poking out (and a robe isn't really the same thing as a greatcoat). Can anyone think of anything? Even a warhammer mounted model would do....?

What about the DKoK rough rider models from Forgeworld, though that is a rather expensive option.

I really have to buy a set of those Enforcers... Wish they weren't metal...

As for the biker Judge, I don't think you'll find a best solution than a Ravenwing body... And a judge could have some heavier shin guards than his men? As for the "greatcoat" thing, it'll probably be easier from that mini too...

Sorry for not being of a great help, uh...

How about using Junker legs from Void? The plastic ones, with gs'd coat tails? They're very wide spread (I use them on rough riders, for instance) - you just need to reposition the feet slightly.

How about the legs from a GW Judge Dredd that was mounted on a Lawmaster?

Perhaps the legs from one for the original GW roughrider models, they might have stirrups but could possibly do?

Yeah, Scout biker legs are what are used on the regular bikers - but I don't think I have the GS skills to do some convincing coat tails.

GOOD IDEA. I have a random set of the old Attilan legs lying around in my bits box. They'll need some de-furring and de-stirruping, but they might just work. I'll have a go...

AHHHHH! Yes, I've got a few more than that too - saw them at Salute this year and figured they'd make good character models with a bit of converting. The sizes are a bit off (a couple of the models are just way too big to fit in with the Arbites) but most of them are good...

So, updating the shock squad next. I swapped out a lot of models so that the squad only comprised models with 'up' arms - since the models with 'down' arms are more useful for weapon conversions.

I've taken off all the shields for a clean and repaint, and repositioned a lot of the maul arms so they don't all look the same.

This squad will also have two Proctors, as is allowed in the BOLS codex. I've converted them so that one is still obviously the leader, though, with an aquila headdress. They'll both have power mauls instead of shock mauls, converted from plastic power axes.

Thanks - it would be great to know which models you have. I'm not sure how useful any of them are going to be, as I haven't got around to trying to integrate the Mongoose models yet, but if they work, then an option for some more would be lovely..

Mr. S Baldrick wrote:Just wanted to say nice work man - How are you finding the BOLS codex, do you find it more fun then the WH or IG book?

I'm not sure about more competitive than the IG book, but it's certainly more fun, and plays more like a 'real' Arbites army. I've not done too well with it so far, but then I have yet to build and paint some of the stronger options. It does MASSIVELY lack things like Melta, but then I'm sure I can compensate for that elsewhere and make it work.

I've not played it as an IG force since the 5ed Codex was released - I might give it a go, though. I was also considering the possibilty of trying it out as an SM Scout list. Since the removal of Inquisitors and Stormtroopers from the WH Codex, I'm not sure they're an option any more.

inmygravenimage wrote:Looking good, mate. You wanting a DA power maul (or possibly 2?)

What's a DA Maul? Might well be interested, and I promise this time I'll be quicker in sending out your models!! In fact, I'll be in Glasgow from the 7th to the 15th Sept - maybe we could test out the Arbites in a game.....

Shock Team Completed! I've finally finished my shock team in time for a game this evening. Now starting on the sentinels. This is ten Arbitors from the Necromunda Enforcers range with the standard shock mauls and supression shields.

The BOLS codex allows for two Proctors, so I've made two models with much bulkier Power Mauls (converted from Power Axes). One is the 'lead' proctor, and one his second in command, differentiated by headdress.

If you're looking for stuff for conversions I've got some of the Mongoose judges going spare, including two of the bikes, all undercoated. I can sort pictures and would be willing to trade, PM me if you're interested!

Thanks - it would be great to know which models you have. I'm not sure how useful any of them are going to be, as I haven't got around to trying to integrate the Mongoose models yet, but if they work, then an option for some more would be lovely..

I'll have a look tomorrow/Tuesday and take some pictures, I'll let you know!
Great new stuff man.

Very nice. What are you arming the sentinels with? Multi lasers would give good suppressing fire, but lascannon sentinels are great tank hunters. Any chance of a battle report soon, you guys have the best ones.

We'll try and get a proper one done when I've got a completed army. I think Panic is trying to get enough of his new Dark Eldar together for a force, and then we'll do Dark Eldar vs Arbites...

At the moment, they're armed with Multi-lasers, as it's the best option the BOLS Codex allows, but I'm going to try out the army using IG rules too, so I might magnetise and make some options....

Arbites vs Dark Eldar. Can't wait, good luck

The IG codex will give you some more optios for those sentinels, multi meltas would be some good support.

Well THAT certainly took longer than expected. I've been quite busy with work over the last few weeks and haven't had much time to even look at warhammer. However , I'm trying to get a 1000pt army together this week for our first proper attempt at a DE vs Arbites game, so here goes...

ARBITES BIKERS! These are the Arbites Bikers I've completed, I just need to build the bikes (which I'll do this morning). The heads and shoulderpads are GS molds using Instant Mold. I used the Enforcer heads as there's more variation, but the original shoulderpads, which have much better insignia. Bodies are from Cadians, everything else from the Scout Biker kit.

Six man bike squad with shotguns, one grenade launcher, one flamer, and a Proctor with a power maul.

looking very nice
When you make the head molds do you have a head that is already detached, left over from a head swap or are you just making the mold around a complete model?

Thanks!

I'm making the molds from a complete model, so the actual casting has a bit of the shoulders in as well, which I cut away. It's actually quite handy, as it means that the whole of the mold is 'flared' in towards the head, which makes it easy to get the GS in....

Just charting progress. The bikes are almost done. Just dipped all the parts and finished the bases - I'll do the highlights this evening. In the meantime, I've been converting up a leader for the 1000pt game. Eventually he'll be a sergeant of a small Shock Team, but for now he can be a Marshall.

Post by: ArbitorIan

So, I've made lots of progress this weekend, spurred on by the game I played against Panic's new DE army. The Battle Report for that one should be up in a minute, but for now, here's the miniatures I managed to get finished in time.

This is the Veteran Shock Team leader, who I was using as a Marshall in the game. Converted the helmet so that he looks a bit more leaderly.

Then we have the bike squad! The GS sculpts aren't perfect, but I think they're pretty good for a first go...

The next thing I've started work on is the vehicles - it bugged me that they weren't ready on Saturday. There's quite a bit of conversion I wanted to do to these, as they could potentially count as a lot of different things. At the moment, I could take this army as one of four things - The BOLS Arbites Dex, a SM Scout army, a Sisters of Battle army, or an IG Veteran/Grenadier army. The vehicles could therefore be Rhino OR Chimera - based, depending on what army I use. Therefore the vehicles COULD be...

Arbites Black Maria could be a WH Exorcist / SM Whirlwind / IG Manticore
Arbites Repressor could be a WH Repressor / SM Rhino/Razorback / IG Chimera
WH Immolator could be an Arbites Rhino / SM Rhino / IG ??

I wanted to modify all the standard Rhinos to make them look a little less Rhino-ish, and make it a bit more believable that they could be Chimeras, especially with the addition of a hull gun point. I started by taking the front off of all the Repressors, and removing the distinctive vision slits with a scalpel.

I then found a useful angled 'cab' bit by cutting apart the undercarriage of a Leman Russ, and attached the vision slits and the Imperial eagle. I then attached this to a piece of 1mm plasticard and cut it to fit in the hole.

I then needed a gun port. There still wasn't a lot of space, but I ended up going with a vision slit from the old Leman Russ kit, which I've widened. This will have a magnet buried inside it, so it can either be a vision port or a gun port. I'll have to use slightly smaller weapons (maybe Flamers for Heavy Flamers) but that should be fine...

Now, this army will end up with seven or eight vehicles, and I don't have seven or eight Leman Russes to sacrifice, so I need to figure out a way of casting this part. At the moment, the only thing I have available is Instant Mold, so I squished together my remaining bits and press-cast the part (I also cast an Imperial eagle on it's own to make decals for the vehicles)

And here's the first attempt at a GS cast. It's not perfect - I've lost a bit of detail in the vision slits, and there is the odd chip in the front. I'm going to attempt to fix these with GS and give it another go, but does anyone think that it would be significantly better with a resin cast? Resin casting is the other option, but I'd have to order all the equipment as I've never tried it before...

Does anyone at your FLGS do resin casting? If not, it looks like your GS mold will work, but that is one heck of a lot of GS to use on each vehicle. Especially if the quality isn't so great.

Good luck!

Thanks guys. Panic has done a bit of resin casting, so I might be able to nab some of his stuff. I guess the question is - is the resin casting going to produce better results that this GS/Pressmold casting, considering the amount of time involved? I'll give the GS another try when I get back home, and see if I can mold it a bit better!

In terms of GS use, it seems an awful lot, but I've been ordering it 10ft at a time from eBay, so I've got quite a bit. I use about 3" of GS per casting of this (it's not completely solid at the back!).

Did / have you considered using milliput for your front press mould ? It's a darn sight cheaper and you can really force it into anything. I'm sure the detail would transfer and it will be nice and hard for you to get that sharp edge on the finished product with a file. Just remember to use a little talc or chalk dust to aid the release process

I've got some Milliput lying around - I've never really used it for miniatures, but I've used it for terrain. Are you suggesting that I use it to make a new cast, or that I use my existing Instant Mold cast, but with Milliput instead of GS? And talc would work as a release agent from the Instant Mold?

Exactly. Using the milliput as a greenstuff replacement and talc as the release agent. You have the mould. Just change the casting material. It's equally as effective for the purpose as greenstuff

Great. Thanks. I'll give that a go for the next version. Any idea of the curing time for Milliput? I usually leave GS like this overnight.

Thanks - and well they should. The original GW Arbites were basically direct ripoffs of their 80s Judge Dredd miniatures range. I've got some of the more current Mongoose JD range which I'm going to try and include as characters..

zilegil wrote:Nice stuff. I might get some of that stuff when I pass through Darksphere. Good store that, and free postage for Warmahordes.

Glad you like, but... which stuff do you mean? GS and Milliput are in Darksphere, but they won't sell any of the miniatures, since they're either Direct Only or long OOP..

Miliput takes about 2-3 hours to not totally rock hard but hard enough to be popped out of the mould without many problems. Depending on the size but I have gotten away with putting 20 sand bag sized objects in the microwave for 2 minuites to Finnish of the curing. This also makes the components quite hot so if you try this it's worth leaving the components on a microwaveable plate for 5-10 minuites afterwards.

First Repressor painted. I've magnetised the gun port and the Siege Shield, so that it can either play as a Chimera or a Repressor.

Repressor - pintle mounted hvy flamer and Dozer

Chimera - hull mounted hvy flamer (and the turret weapon suddenly becomes a Heavy Bolter)

Convincing enough? The actual base colour, dark blue, is bluer in real life, I'm just taking this photo late at night in poor lighting, but they still look a bit bland to me. Any suggestions as to what could make them pop a bit more?

Thanks The codex is a lot of fun, but bloody difficult. I haven't yet cracked how to win with it..! It's very low on AT, which is understandable for an Arbites force, but it makes life difficult when facing mech.

Ok, so I've done a bit more work on the Repressor. I thought it was looking a bit monochrome, so came up with some extra detail, inspired in part by modern Police forces - a blue/silver check pattern that can be used in different places in all the vehicles.

I also re-highlighted the edges, and incorporated some waterslide tranfers - which I never normally use. I filled all the gun ports at the side with greenstuff and painted them grey, like the windows at the front.

Looking for the finishing touches to my Sentinels, I then copied the check pattern on to the front plates.

I'm building the army to conform mostly to the BOLS Arbites Codex, but the finished army should be able to be run as an IG force or a SM Scout force, and hopefully keeping the options open enough that it could run as a WH force if a new codex was to appear.

The highlights are pretty simple. Basic checks are Enchanted Blue and Boltgun Metal, then washed with Badab Black, then the same colours on the outside corners and plate edges.

Your army looks awsome. I love the fact that you did all of those conversions. i use instamold too. amazing stuff. someone earlier said something about release powder. Im not sure but i dont think you would need it for casting in instamold with resin. i could be wrong but that instamold stuff is really amazing. nothing seems to want to stick to it. I think the moto to "punish and suppress" seems fitting, but its your army. Do whatever makes you stoked. I think its awesome. Great job.

I like the checks! I think it does give a bit of the "Police-y" feel.

However, I think they're a bit too much on the Sentinels. The checks look great on the repressor because they are an accent. On the Sentinels they are a main scheme. Not to but a damper on your work, but I think just half of the front or maybe the side panels instead would look better.

Keep up the great work!

How about the British Police style? That's fairly basic. I think a nice obvious ARBITES across the chequerboard would look good.

After looking back at them, I kinda agreed with this. So, I've removed the checks from the Sentinels, and gone for a simpler motif to tie them in - numbers! I'll get some better pics when I do the next batch of models..

what they make me think of is in those movies where there is a group of "bad guys" and they are shooting it out with the cops, then there is a shot of the SWAT coming up they are all in black and the music is playing heavier while they are marching twords them. That is what i see, the Arbites as the cops and the sentinals as the SWAT, not in game wise but in paint sceme

The new front plates look great on the repressors and the Ex. On the sentinels, they looked good with the checkers, but they look even better with just simple squad markings. So can we look forward to seeing them in action anytime soon? Do you guys have anymore battle reports on the way? Keep up the good work.

I'm glad the miliput worked well for you for the front plates for your rhinos. I often use it for cloaks and more often to sculpt with but that said I'm very old school

When first mixed it's about as pliable as green stuff but hardens faster not to mention some of the bonuses is its cheaper and water slide too so you can sculpt smooth gentle curves faster but will keep a harder edge than green stuff.

Thanks - Panic's been away in Swedenland for a while, and now it's Xmas, so I doubt we'll see much until the new year. Besides, I'm in a weird position where I've dismantles all the vehicles for repainting and only reassembled the completed ones. I might need to get a few more put together before I can field a decent force again!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
BACK AGAIN!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so after a little diversion by my Slaanesh Chaos Marines, I'm back onto the Arbites and doing a bit of converting. Now that everyone has had a few months to digest the new Sisters rules, it seems that some pretty decent builds have emerged, and I've been thinking of how to best use the Arbites as SoB. I have a prospective army list at - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/434407.page

So, this part of the project will be to get the SoB list ready for action, so I've been busy painting up all the boltgun models I own. I've also put a 'to do' list on the first post which I can update.

First, some extra Proctors converted to have boltguns. I'm going to need a fair few of these, so I have some works-in-progress as well. Should give me enough to command five squads...

And then the rest of my boltgun Arbites - this gives me 18 Bolter guys - enough for the two Battle Sisters squads and the two Dominion squads.

I've also started on the characters. I need a counts-as Kyrinov and a counts-as Jacobus, so I'm making two 'Judges' in the studious/robes style. This is the WIP on Kyrinov. The base model is a Redemptor Priest from Necromunda with GS robes added to mask a lot of the cut-off weapons. The headdress is from the Dark Angel kit, and the macehead from an old WHFB Chaos Warrior, with the hand/staff from Fabius Bile and a GS power cable.

Still need to smooth out a lot of this when it dries, and add some arbites-style boots....

Nice looking It is hard to get some variety in the proctor models. For a good bolter armed proctor try the Telon scout guy from SM. I have used a few in my army.

Like this guy, he is the squad leader for my retributors.

Must be a different Icon you're thinking of - this one is detailed on the back. I'm hoping to finish off the GS on him this evening...

ArbitorIan's FORCES OF THE IMPERIUM!! @ 2012/03/11 14:12:28

Post by: TiB

Ah yes I was thinking of a different one. There's a tank icon that's pretty similar, carry on then!

ArbitorIan's FORCES OF THE IMPERIUM!! @ 2012/03/11 22:59:10

Post by: ArbitorIan

Carry on I certainly have! And here's the update this evening.

Kyrinov is now finished - I did a bit more work on the headdress, building up the wreaths and adding a skull to the centre, and then gave him a big ol' medallion, which is going to be his Rosarius. I carved a stylised imperial 'I' into it. He's now finished and ready for painting.

I can't really spraypaint this late at night though, so in the meantime, I assembled the last two Heavy 'Bolter' troops for the Retributor Squad and pulled four semi-painted bodies for the Meltaguns, which should arrive tomorrow.

I also started on the next Judge, the count-as Jacobus. He's made from the other Redemptor Priest - the running one - and I've removed his hand flamer and put in a Combat Shotgun. I've also assembled an 'icon' out of bits of the Flagellant frame.

Thanks guys. Got a few more things finished this morning. The Judge/Priest/Kyrinov conversion is done. He'll be Kyrinov in a Sob army, and probably a Priest in an IG/GK one..

And then the four meltagun models were completed and repainted - giving me two complete Dominion squads.

Thanks! I'm building that list for now, though I eventually intend to have lots more options. The Immolators are the FW Immolator kit (slightly less 'priestly') with the SoB gunners replaced with Arbites. I have the models but haven't started on them yet!!

Yeah, I'm not too sure about him either. The white becomes kind of overpowering. Here's the deal.

- I want him in a bright colour, which ties into the rest of the army. Something ideally I have used on the rest of the army.
- I don't want him dark blue, as it's the main colour for everything else.
- My 'detectives' will have black coats, so not black ideally.
- I use tan and brown in the army, but those are mostly functional colours - leather, trechcoats etc.

- He has to look impressive, like a 'Judge' for this army, but then able to be a regular priest in a different army.
- I kinda had the idea of giving my Inquisitor 'Judges' red overcoats, and in that configuration these guys will be Priests, so they can't be red too.

What do people reckon? :/

In my home state the Judges of our high court wear red robes, where the rest of the court has black. So it does happen sometimes that higher judges look a little different from the rest.

Thanks guys - I had a bit of a rethink, and as suggested I'm trying out a deeper red, paired with the white tassles. There are two more tassles now compared to the original model, because I had to hide various Redemtion bits...

When I do the more 'military commander' Judges for the IG/GK versions of the armies, maybe THEY could be the ones with white overcoats, since they'll have more black/blue armour to balance it out...

This has just been washed - will get the highlights done later tonight and post pics in the morning - I wonder if I'm going to have to darken the helmet red to bring it into line...

Thanks - it's actually a very quick mixture, but obviously it's been affected somewhat by the original shaded white that I had on the robes, which probably boosts the contrast a bit. The original white mix was 50/50 Fortress Grey/Skull White, LOTS of Badab Black, then Skull White. The red mix was painted over this.

The first colour was Red Gore. Red Gore might have been renamed Scab Red since I got that pot - not sure.
Then LOTS of Badab Black.
Then a rough 40/40/20 mix of Red Gore/Blood Red/Skull White
Then the 80/20 mix of Blood Red/Skull White that I use for all the red faceplates.

I think it's the inclusion of a bit of Skull White into all the bright highlighting colours that gets the slightly pastelly/flat look....

Thats really interesting because i've been mixing in elf flesh for the final highlight on my ad mech (in sig) because i read somewhere it would help with the pastel like effect, but its interesting to know you just used white, will definitely be giving that a go, thanks for the tip.

Just thought i'd drop in a compliment on the rhino/chimeras as well, really loving the built up look. =] keep it up.

Where would you suggest for spot colour? Maybe a different colour book? There's not a lot of standout bits of him - and I expect text would be black.

Also, progress with the second Judge/Priest - this one will be Jacobus. He's a bit wonky as he's not on the correct base. It's also quite hard to get a photo of this guy - he has no obvious 'front'.

Well, it is a little bit tough since the classic Arbites scheme is two primary colors. Text in the book would be a good addition, but wouldn't help the color problem. I'm thinking brown text edged in green on his stoles. Whaddaya think 'bout that?

I might well try that, though since the second Priest has more space for text, I might get them both up and running, and then go into the text. Maybe if the stoles had a combination of text and bright icons, there would be an excuse to fir in some other colours?

-----

And, in other news, Retribution Squad is complete - one new Proctor (to be honest, he's so mobile, I'll probably use him in a Dominion squad) and four Arbites with 'Heavy Bolters' (ahem..)

Ok, so I have a new goal - the completion of this army by the 2012 Rampage tournament in Bristol on the 28th April. Off to work.

I started with the remainder of the vehicles today. Three hulls complete, and magnetised for riot plows. The fourth (Immolator) hull still needs to be bought, but I did the turret anyway.

The two Immolator turrets with Arbites gunners, built from the gunner in the Imperial Guard box sets.

And all the weapon options magnetised.

As far as I could tell, they'll be available at all (or at least most) of the shows FW attend this year. It may be worth dropping them an email to check availability, however.

And my apologies - I didn't think to check this thread before going to the Open Day, as I'd've been happy to order one of him for you. As it stands, how about some pics of the parts?

Cool - well, I'd be up for trading for the roundheaded shotgun guy - I haven't got one of those. Ah - I was actually at the open day! They didn't have anything else I wanted, which was annoying, but I ordered five of the Enforcers for delivery. If I like them, I'll pre-order some more for Salute. I think the resin Enforcers are going to be REALLY useful for conversions...!

Yup, we're testing for a tournament in a few weeks so we should see some Arbites action in the next few weeks - I have to get thing like Seraphim converted first, though!!

GO GO GO

So, the tournament is in a week, and I've got a lot of building to do!

I've finished the final Rhino and started on the checker patterns with all four.

In the meantime, I picked up a decent razor saw at Salute yesterday, and I've started on the first 'Seraphim'. I started by removing the legs.

And then removing the front (landing) foot and drilling a hole into it and the leg.

The leg was then positioned on a paperclip and let dry.

Once this was dry, I affixed it to the Arbitor, along with a repositioned other leg, grav chute, and control cable.

I've also started on the next one, who will be looking down, firing his pistol as he descends.

Thanks guys. I hope to get all four tanks ready for some proper photos tomorrow morning - once the checks are done they're very easy to finish.

I've also started on a little homebrew codex using the Sisters of Battle rules - essentially changing the names so that all the rules sound 'Arbitesy'. Eventually, I'll get around to adding other units in, but I might do a 'tournament sheet' in the same style if I get time...

Thanks - the jump packs are grav-chutes from the Elysian range. This way, I can use them as drop-troops if I want to use the BOLS codex.

Rawson wrote:Great work on the seraphim thus far! Have an "arbites-y" name figured out yet?

I was thinking of 'Interdiction Team' but that's not stricly the correct definitionof Interdiction. I'm up for any suggestions though. Interception Team doesn't sound quite right to me....

:/

-----------------------------------

Some finished photos of the Immolator (castigator) and the dogs. I haven't put transfers on the Immolator yet, or painted any of the other weapon options, since I'm in a bit of a rush. I'll probably go back and do the transfers after the tournament!

I've also done the basic conversion and repositioning for the Seraphim. I'll wait until the GS dries, and then go over for grav chutes, filling, and weapon arms.

EDIT: Because there's no such thing as 'gravy chutes'

I'm liking the work!

As a name for the Seraphim, I quite like Interdiction Teams.
It's can be applied, since they would be used (presumably) as a rapid response team to stop crimes in progress or which are about to be committed.

Had a list thread active for a while at http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/434407.page

The final list is

* Judge Jacobus (Uriah Jacobus)
* Suppression Team (Battle Conclave) [9] [3 Cyberhounds (DCA), 6 Arbitors (Crusaders)]
* Repressor (Rhino) [Dozer Blade, Searchlight]

* Judge Kyrinov (Confessor Kyrinov)
* Suppression Team (Battle Conclave) [9] [3 Cyberhounds (DCA), 6 Arbitors (Crusaders)]
* Repressor (Rhino) [Dozer Blade, Searchlight]

* Combat Team (Battle Sisters Squad) [10] [Flamer, Flamer]
* Repressor (Rhino) [Dozer Blade, Searchlight]

* Combat Team (Battle Sisters Squad) [10] [Multimelta, Flamer]

* Response Team (Dominion Squad) [5] [Meltagun, Meltagun]
* Castigator (Immolator) [Multimeltas, Searchlight]

* Response Team (Dominion Squad) [5] [Meltagun, Meltagun]
* Castigator (Immolator) [Multimeltas, Searchlight]

* Interdiction Team (Seraphim) [10] [2 Hand Flamers, Power Weapon]

* Execution Team (Retributor Squad) [5] [4 Heavy Bolters]

* Exorcist

* Exorcist

The Repressors are just Rhinos with Dozer Blades, since they're Forge World rules.

Insertion Team (snigger) or Interdiction Team? Hmm. Still don't know...

Whatever they are, all ten conversions are now finished - weapon arms attached and cables moulded. I've given them all the SM Scout boltpistols as they look a bit beefier, and converted some hand flamers from plasma pistols and metal Arbites flamers.

A couple have shock mauls, which I'll just use as regular close combat weapons, to vary the unit. I'm going to be making a second squad of these anyway for use in fandex games...

Battlecult Rampage Report

So, I went with Panic to play the Battlecult tournament at the weekend with my fancy new Arbites - I had printed out a pile of cheat sheets for my opponents, and after chatting with a few of the guys in the bar the evening before, started to make some notes on one of them so that I didn't forget all my special rules!

Game 1 - Orks

Game 1 was against Orks - list was Warboss/Nobz, Burnas, Ard Boyz, Kans, Mek, Battlewagon, Buggies, Deffkopta and a big squad of boyz. Mission was to hold table quarters. He started in the centre and I deployed a refused flank around a big building, with a couple of squads on the other side of the board. He went straight for the easy targets on the other side of the board while the rest of our armies traded shots, wiping out an awful lot.

By turn 5 he had managed an assault on my firebase, killing the squad standing in it, but leaving me with all my models in transports. If I had moved my Battle Conclaves in their transports to the edge of the quarter and sat for a turn, I rpobably would have won the game, but I wasn't sure they were worth more points, so I charged his Warboss/Mek/Nobs with both Conclaves, and promptly forgot about Jacobus' FNP rolls. Both conclaves died and he won!

Game 2 - Eldar

Eldar next - list was Night Spinner, 2 Falcons with Dire Avenger squads, Harlequins, Yriel & Eldrad in a squad of Wraithguard. Mission was Annihilation. I made a silly mistake right at the start of this. Every army I've played so far with this has charged straight in, so I set up in a castle in the back corner, expecting him to reserve everything and fly in from the edge, only to have him set up in a castle in HIS back corner and take shots at me with his 72" range Night Spinner! By about turn three I had reorganised enough to make a push forward, but by then I had lost too many points to achieve anything. I lose again!!

Game 3 - Dark Eldar

Fast, varied Dark Eldar were next up - FINALLY a list I have experience playing against - Baron Sathonyx, Haemonculus, 15 Hellions, 3 squads of Reavers, 3 Ravagers, 3 Warrior squads in Venoms, 1 Wrack squad in a Venom. Dawn of War was the deployment, and Objectives the mission. I got first turn and put everything into DoW reserve, outflanking the Dominions. He deployed the Hellions in some covers, but as I moved on and fired both Exorcists at them he realised that there were more out of cover than in, and the entire squad fled off the board.

As he came towards me, I could concentrate rapid firing, and then moved the Dominions in from the sides to take out anything that could grab an objective. In the last turn, he still had one venom that managed to even the score on Objectives, but the secondary mission was Table Quarters, which I won. First win to Sisters, and first game where i think I remembered all the rules!

Game 4 - Grey Knights

My first game against the Grey Knight army that had defeated Panic the previous day, and I was a little worried. I've never played GK before - list was Draigo & 5 Paladins in a Stormraven, Dreadnknight, 5 Paladins, 2 Paladins, Strike Squad in a Razorback, Vindicare Assassin. Deployment was Dawn of War and mission was Table Quarters. Again, I put everything into DoW deployment. He deployed the Strike squad in the centre. I moved on in the first turn to castle RIGHT at the back of the board with everyone in vehicles, and took the lascannon off the Razorback. He flew the Stormraven straight towards me 24" and moved the two foot Knights squads on to hold his two table quarters with their huge VP values!

The game became one of concentrating fire. Turn two, I took out the Stormraven, forcing Draigo to spend two turns trying to get to me. The Dreadknight then arrived and in Turn three I turned the whole army on it, killing it. Turn Four, Draigo's squad was almost at my lines, so the whole army fired on them, then charged with Jacobus's conclave, killing all the Paladins and givign Draigo two wounds. He finished the squad off in his turn, leaving him standing, to be shot to death in turn five. The end of the game was just me moving troops/tanks around to get me the table quarters. Solid win to the Arbites.

Game 5 - Blood Angels

A very gamey Blood Angels list - Mephiston, Librarian, 2 Sanguinary Priests, 2 Vindicators, 5x5 Assault Marines w/ Melta & Fist in Lascannon Razorbacks. So, a huge parking lot of vehicles. The game was Objectives, and I went first, scouting the Dominions forward and right into his area of fire to shake some vehicles. He spent the first few turns in his corner, trying to get rid of the Immolators and Dominions as a priority while I moved up the the central objective with the Battle Conclaves. Mephiston took out the Seraphim, leaving himself exposed for the rest of the game to a Conclave that held him up for a good few turns. Jacobus' Battle Conclave took on the remnants of three Assault squads, a Librarian and a Priest and came out practically unharmed to hold the centre, and my Repressors drove around contesting objective after long range exorcist fire had knocked out most of his Rhinos. Another win to the Arbites!

Game 6 - Space Marines

And, just when it was going so well, I make the same mistake as Game 2. List was an incredibly shooty combination of Rifleman dreads, MM Speeders, Predators, Thunderfire Cannon and, horribly, a Null Zone librarian. I deployed second, in the back corner, but again too far away, and had my transports popped one by one by Rifleman dreads, leaving my Conclaves exposed to fire. Oh well. Lesson (hopefully) learned... Loss to Sisters.

So, in total three wins and three losses, and over the course of the tournament I think I figured out how the army is meant to be played - before this I'd only managed to fit in 2 practise games with sisters, so a good learning curve.

The tournament itself was very well organised, in a large, clean hotel which we stayed in, and since we were in the conference suites, deals on food and drink. The general makeup was a bit too 'tournament competitive' for my tastes I think - my early losses meant that I at least got to play a good variety of armies instead of the Grey Knights, Space Wolves and Deathwing that took up the top tables. There was very little 'hobby' side to things, and I got the impression a lot of the people there spend every other weekend competing somewhere in the country to up their rankings. So, while everyone I played was lovely, I think I'll make then next one a more 'hobby' tournament...

Here's some more armies....

Thanks, there was a painting award, but not a players choice or 'best army'. I'm not the best painter in the world, and there were other armies that were MUCH better painted, so fair dos. Even so, it felt like this was very much an afterthought!

PHASE 3

So, I'm off to Scotland for a month to work on a new show, and I thought I'd take a bit of an Arbites project with me.

I'm starting with a general repaint of the vehicles - they were painted very quickly for the tournament and I'm not completely happy with them. The concept will stay the same, but I plan to repaint the black body in a solid midnight blue with hard edge highlights. The checks/weapons/details will stay the same.

Since this means taking my vehicle case up to Scotland, I've prepared a small 1250pt SM Scout army which uses a lot of what I have already, and fits in the same box.

* Judge (Chaplain)
* 10 Scouts with Boltguns, Hvy Bolter
* 10 Scouts with Boltguns, Hvy Bolter
* 10 Scouts with Shotguns, Hvy Bolter
* 10 Scouts with Shotguns, Hvy Bolter
* 6 Scout Bikers, Meltabombs, Power Weapon
* Judge Karamazov (Venerable Dreadnought)
* Whirlwind

What Show are you up for? (I will also ask if you were involved in Blackwatch a couple of years back...?) Thanks - I went down to St.Aidens last night and got a game in, and I'm planning to go to G3 tomorrow night. And I've located Static Games, so should try and get there through the week. AND I joined the Facebook group. Phew!

----

In the meantime, I've been starting on a repaint of the Rhinos - I didn't like the 'drybrush' effect on the large armour plates so I've decided to go with a more traditional solid colour and edge highlighting scheme. I mixed up a base colour from Kantor Blue and Chaos Black, and then highlighted the edges with Regal/Enchanted blue. I've also dont some touching up on the lenses and headlamps to make them pop a bit.

I've also ordered a ton more transfer sheets from the bits sites. It's quite hard to get hold of the IG Vehicle 'Stencil' markings, and there is only one line of white letters on each, so I'm probably going to go for the more gothic white lettering on the Space Marine Vehicle sheet.

I've also started on Judge Karamazov on his Throne of Judgement - what better for an Arbites Judge than a stompy throne? I've filled in a lot of the engraved =I= symbols with green stuff, which I'll sand down tonight.

It is sausage gravy. The lumps are bits of sausage. You pour the whole thing over buttermilk biscuits (note: not sweet, we define biscuit differently, too . IT IS DELICIOUS.

I think I'll stick to good old sausage and mash...or as we folk call them "bangers"! In Scotland that would be sausage and mashed tatties! (although it would be mince in place of sausage up here!)

Anyway...back on track. If you fancy coming through to Edinburgh any time after friday then give me a buzz and we'll have a game Ian! Also the throne looks good there, nice idea to have it in a adeptus army. Are you going to give the chap riding it some form of protection from all the large hard objects that will be throne (hahaha) at him during riots (eg. Need some opinions. I've been repainting my vehicles, and have started to redo the numbering.

The 'Stencil' type of numbers only come on the IG Vehicle kits, and they're actually quite hard to find. I have, however, got more than a few of the Space Marine Vehicle set and the Cadian IG set, and I've tried these out on different vehicles..

This is the numbers from the Cadian set. The advantages are they they come in blocks of three serial numbers already, and so are easy to apply. I'm just not sure the style is Arbites-y enough.

These are the roman numerals from the Space Marine set. I don't know if they're quite as 'serial number' as the Arbites one, but I have tons of them, so I could get up to some pretty impressive numbers. The Space Marine sheet also has some gothic numberals with strikes through them, but they're a bit too complicated to combine into a three-digit set.

What do you think? Any opinions? Or should I just keep to the Stencil ones and hunt down more on eBay??

I think the stencil ones fit better with the Arbites look, to be very honest with you Ian.

Dysartes wrote:I think the stencil ones fit better with the Arbites look, to be very honest with you Ian.

I agree. In fact, I'd discounted the Cadian one pretty soon after posting this. At the moment, they've been switched to roman numerals. Maybe if I ever get hold of enough Stencil ones I can switch them back - but I'd like to keep the same iconography on the six Rhino vehicles, the bikes, the Sentinels and the six or seven Chimeras to come, so that's quite a lot of sheets of transfers!

Made a bit more progress today with the first of the Repressors. I evidnetly hadn't managed to get all the release agent off this kit when I installed it, because it was chipping a little. I took a hobby knife to it and scraped off the offending areas for repainting. I've also re-filled in the windows at the sides with GS so that it's all level and filled in gaps on the front and back with photocard.

I've also started on my first Riot Shield. I know a rhino really doesn't need one, but I thought it might be fun to have a few vehicles with a more 'police' look and it also covers up some of the defects in the cast front pieces. Made from aluminium rod and wire mesh.

like the riot shield, must've been a bit o' work to produce that Also, really like how "busy" your Rhino's look. Great stuff!!

Thanks for the offer! The sheet I'd need is this one - IMPERIAL GUARD TANK TRANSFER.

They used to come in all the IG tank boxes (my sheet is years old) but I'm not sure they do anymore. Specifically, I'm looking for the white stencil numbers. Thing is, in order to do the whole army I think I'd need 10-12 sheets!! So, on the rare chance that you DO have a metric assload of them, I'd be happy to swap you some bits for - have a look at my sig for my swap thread...

If not, I'll continue with the roman numerals, which are growing on me now they're on a few vehicles.

Thanks - yup, that was a bit of a fiddly job, but not too bad. I think I have two more to make as well. One more Repressor and a battered Immolator need hiding! Here's the finished piece mounted on the repainted Repressor.

I've just got back into Glasgow with two of the Imperial Tank Transfers from some Chimera sets I got from Dysartes at the weekend. Should be enough for me to re-transfer the three vehicles I currently have painted, so I'll get that done tonight and post some pictures in the morning.

Then I'll wait for the rest from Brian to start re-transerring the rest of the vehicles/Sentinels/bikes, and start on the Chimeras after that!!

You mean the shields that come on the Suppression troops? They're mostly the ones from the Necromunda Enforcers set - each box of 8 Enforcers has two shields in it, and I have a few boxes! However, I did press-mold some of them using Insta-mold, just in case I need more in the future.

---------

Here's the vehicles re-numbered with all of my remaining stencils and with detail painted.

Exorcist 019

Castigator 266

Repressor 384

The Repressor has some manacles at the back for attaching prisoners

And all the vehicles have the Imperial Eagle on the back

A coat of Matt Varnish should dull down the reflection on those decals, but that will have to wait until I get back to London...

Ah, Death Cult Assassins and Crusaders combined with Jacobus' +1 Attack, Feel no Pain and re-rolls to hit. Fantastic - a full report completed in-character. Right, I must practice my chanting.

SO, I've made the first draft version of the Arbites Codex PDF available as a download. This isn't playable yet - some squads lack descriptions and some of the army list is missing, but I have a few issues that I'd appreciate some feedback on.

You can find the first draft at....
http://www.arbitorian.com/ArbitorIan_Arbites_Codex_Test_V1.pdf

1. The plan with making it a functional SoB army still stands - anything deviating from the SoB rules will be greyed out - but I haven't got around to greying out anything yet.

2. I've used S4 Combat Shotguns like the SM codex instead of S3 Shotguns like the IG Codex. Is that ok?

3. I've used the Riot Shields/Riot Armour concept to reflect the 3+ save sisters units get - does this all make sense

4. I need a suitable simple mechanic for Webbers - I'm thinking something like a template weapon that tests against S rather than T. Or auto pins or something.

5. I have given them access to Land Speeders, but not any of the SM options. Should they get these? Panic suggested that I should lose normal speeders but give them access to Land Speeder Storms.

6. I don't know what Chasteners do yet!!

Any feedback would be appreciated

If using it as an allied force to the SoB rules, I'd go with Complusary: Troops 1-3. And a 0-1 on HQ, Elites, and Fast Attack.

2. I've used S4 Combat Shotguns like the SM codex instead of S3 Shotguns like the IG Codex. Is that ok?

Makes perfect sense as Arbites get the cream of the equipment, even if they are only a police force.

3. I've used the Riot Shields/Riot Armour concept to reflect the 3+ save sisters units get - does this all make sense

Personally I'd say no. as Riot shields imo are less advanced Storm Shields. so with that I'd say either a 5+ or 4+ invulnerable save but the sheild does not confer the additional hand weapon rule.

4. I need a suitable simple mechanic for Webbers - I'm thinking something like a template weapon that tests against S rather than T. Or auto pins or something.

Personally I think it should be a characteristic test based on Initiative, that causes pinning.

5. I have given them access to Land Speeders, but not any of the SM options. Should they get these? Panic suggested that I should lose normal speeders but give them access to Land Speeder Storms.

Storms over standard speeders, as the idea of Arbites needing to gain access where standard tracked vehicles cannot sounds much more viable.

6. I don't know what Chasteners do yet!!

I couldnt find them/it in the pdf, so any info on it would be great and then I could offer a suggestion.

Well I hope that input helps!!!

I agree with panic on the Land Speeder Storms. They are a much underutilized vehicle in 40k and fit well with the idea of arbites needing rapid deployment. I agree with you on the idea of S4 shotguns; however they really kind of negate the need for rapid firing bolters. Why take bolter when there are S4 shotguns? As for chastisers I have no clue, from what I remember of the Shira Calpurnia books they really just handled interrogations, and constantly reminded people of the charges against them. That doesn’t really give them a place in the game.

Thanks for the feedback. I've just realised that I havent explained the intentions enough. There are no allies, etc.

The vast majority of the Codex is just the Sisters of Battle Codex with different names. This includes all the special rules, So, Dominion Squads are now Response Teams, and the Acts of Faith special rule is now called Command Net, etc. I've haven't included some SoB units, such as Penitent Engines and Repentia, I've then added the more Arbitesy units such as Sentinels and Pursuit Teams, and given them similar rules (such as their own 'Command Net' powers)

The reason for this was that I want to create a codex which is easy to use in an official capacity. I was going to 'grey out' all the non-SoB additions. The idea is that, if you don't take any of the greyed out options, then the army is a tournament-legal SoB force, just with different names. I also wanted to make a fandex which is easy for your opponent to understand. So, even the additions use broadly similar SoB rules.

The biggest problem here came with saving throws - Battle Sisters squads are pretty similar to Arbites except they have a 3+ save. So, the idea was that Arbites units can have regular Riot Shields or Riot Armour which just improves their basic save by +1. All of the Sisters-equivalent units have Riot Shields / Riot Armour as standard, and they have a greyed-out option to lose them for -1 point. This way you can still take a legal Sisters army, and the greyed out options allow them to become 4+ save regular Arbites.

Riot Shields are different to Suppression Shields, which are much better and give you a 3+ Invulnerable, and are only available the Suppression Teams (Battle Conclave Crusaders)

Does that make sense?

Yeah, I don't think they should have too much input on the battlefield, but they're quite a big part of the fluff. I've included them as an option for the Personal Staff, but I haven't given them a special rule yet. Maybe something to do with scaring the enemy, or arresting people, or inspiriing Arbites?

yeah thats a little clearer now rules wise. on the other hand fluff wise, something doesnt sit with me... the command net idea is awesome, but translating it between rules and fluff seems to be confused (apologies). the title suggests imperial guard like orders, but the rules act as faith points. but because you are using an Arbites "skin" mod for the sisters codex I can understand why you've done what you have. its probably me just being picky lols so feel free to ignore me on this lol

going on the fact your modding the SoB rules, I'd suggest Chastners are the equivelent on a Simulacrum Imperialis (re-roll failed faith/command-net tests)

Concerning the Chasteners, here're some quotes from the Arbites supplement of the Dark Heresy RPG:
The Chasteners administer every aspect of the capture and handling of living prisoners.

It is the duty of the Chasteners to return the body and soul of such criminals to the service of the Emperor, which He so rightly requires. To achieve this, each Chastener is trained (...) to fight to subdue and restrain any prisoner, regardless of the environment. They are also skilled in torture and coercive force, the better to exact confessions and repentance from their wayward captives.

Chasteners seek to rehabilitate their prey rather than execute them right off, as it is not the Chastener's place to take from the Emperor one who might still serve the purpose for which he was born. If a Chastener succeeds in his task, not only will he have returned a wayward soul to the service of the God-Emperor, but he will have also saved a soul from damnation.

The Chasteners do not hesitate to put a criminal to death, often weighting the efforts a subject would require against more pressing duties, sometimes executing a redeemable citizen for the sake of expediency.

Chasteners receive extensive training in all sorts of subdual weaponry, including shock-weaponry, stun grenades, disabling toxins, and grapple-nets. In addition, Chasteners are trained to use their bodies as weapons with which to restrain their prey. These agents of the Arbites are masters of martial traditions which focus on grappling and holds to subdue one's opponent

IT'S BACK!

It's 6ed and after my first few games with the Arbites, I'm starting work again. It looks like there are advantages to running SoB and Guard as allies, so the question of how to differentiate pops up again. I'm still think the best way is having two different shields - 'Riot Shields' which mean that the model has a 3+/6++ save (and is therefore a Sister) and then 'Suppression Shields' which are the 3++ ones that in the Battle Conclaves.

Originally, I made these for Riot Shields.

But we tried them and they look a bit crap. So, I've gone down a different route. The standard Necromunda shields will be my 'Riot Shields', and I'm starting work on bulking a few up to be the Suppression variant - with reinforcement, cables, wires and a little generator on the side. Once done, I'll cast them to get enough to equip two Conclaves.

I've also started work on a Psy-Marshal (Primaris Psyker) to be the HQ choice in the IG contingent. Just a simple conversion from a Mongoose Judge Dredd figure, bulking out her webbing/packs and building a 'force rod' from part of an IG tank aerial.

It will be interesting to see what the end result is with the shields. However you don’t really need to differentiate too much all of the SOB models will have bolters and the guard models will have shotgun/grenade launchers so there really isn’t that much room for confusion. Just be careful I have seen other people try what you are talking about and it tends to make the model look cluttered.

PS
Nice job on the psi-judge.

Once it hardened a bit I started to cut - it's going to be flat reinforced panels, but since the shields are curved, plasticard won't stick properly at that size. I'm going to use a very sharp scalpel to cut the hard edges once the GS is set...

Yeah, but it gets more complex than that when you have squads like Dominions which only have one or two regular bolter guys. Even though I don't need to differentiate, I wanted something that visually justifies the 3+/6++ save - so that when you look at the squad from across the table it's obvious that they're more heavily armoured...
