Greetings!

Hello readers, I start this Blog after making some drastic changes to my old life style, I gave up World of Warcraft after playing the game from 2006 – 2010. Since then this blog has been my focus as a way of showing my efforts into the Warhammer 40,000 universe, I’m not saying I am a perfect painter, far from it. However having seen how great this community is I’m sure anyone can appreciate someone who gives it their best effort.

So welcome to my blog showing all current work on my custom Space marine chapter, a combination Space marine and Grey Knight force called the Gray Nights.

Back ground on the army.

Gray Nights – totally a bad pun right? I’ll agree with you on that whole heartedly. Back in 2005 (I think) the metal Grey Knight models were released and as everyone did I thought they were awesome. Truth is told I think they still are and the new plastic models just add more awesome to the mix.

I started the army but unfortunately this didn’t last long as a test model soon proved that painting silver wasn’t enjoyable and putting a blue ink over it didn’t make it any better so it all stopped receiving the love and I lost myself in WoW. When I rekindled my passion I set about trying to come up with a better paint scheme and got some inspiration from some online pictures some of which were from Dakkadakka, showing the models in something other than silver (Pure black with red helms, White armor with blue blades, Grey armor with black blades etc.) and decided to do a test model on one of the incinerator PAGK’s.

I started off as a basic painter using all the cheap tricks in the book, light colors, no washes and dry brushing to maximum effect, what I ended up with is below

If you zoom in on the Justicars blade you can kind of see what I was trying to accomplish when I wanted power weapons. Once I had painted the majority of the terminators and PAGK’s I was a little lost with what to do next, the models were awesome, but there was little variety on the models that were produced. I spoke to some of my friends who suggested why not make some Grey Knights up out of spare bits and mail order items.

In hindsight I think the idea was that I would make the models look like current metals. I however had different plans, thus was born the “what if” concept for my force. What if the Grey Knights needed support on a planet that was beset by all manner of horrors and needed Space Marine support. So I brought a Tactical squad box, Dark Angels kit and Deathwatch kit and went to town.

That was the result.

Now one of problems that arose was I had very few people to critique my work, and as such I kept thinking how awesome I was and had people agreeing with me just because they weren’t painters or modelers. I did get a wakeup call when I took a trip down to the LFGS to show the guys my “kickass” force. I was greeted with ooh’s and aah’s from the youngsters down at the club with comments like “man, those are the most awesome looking Space Wolf’s I’ve ever seen!”

… Bugger, not what I had anticipated...

One of the workers said the force looked good, but from a distance, looked a bit chalky. After hearing that comment it forced me to look at my army again. Aghast, I conceded he was right, all that hard work had got me this far but I needed more help. I sat down with him and asked for advice he asked if I had thought about less dry brushing and why not paint the armor plates the same base color but leave the black wash in the recesses then highlight the edges in Space Wolves Grey.

Brilliant, I had to change the entire way I’m painting my force. It looked so much better it shouldn’t be too hard to redo everything I guess. He also showed me how to thin my paints with water, how to layer painted and mix on the fly for faces (This was a very notable weakness I must say) and how to take my time and enjoy painting.

What you see in this blog is the progress from that point. So this is it, this is my army. I hope to add more updates as time permits me.

Holy crap those dreadnoughts look mean! What's the big gun on that turret on the rhino? Looks like its from a Leman Russ, what will you field it as on the table?

I like your guys there they look pretty sweet!

Great looking army. Those dreads are especially nice.

Thats a pretty comprehensive army there, repaint or not. I really like the level of detail in the models, even the standard marines. It's something I'm looking forward to doing when the new models come out, but to see you go this far is aspirational for me. As for the uber shooty dreads, I've got nothing but time for something with that many missiles.

Post by: Knightley

@Cave_Dweller - cheers for the compliment! Yep you guessed it right, a long time ago a friend gave me the cannon for a Leman Russ, I've always wanted to throw it on a tank somewhere so after scratch building the turret and managed to fit the cannon in for measure. It's supposed to be classified as a Razorback for my dual weapons 5 man squad, however I'm pretty sure that there is no demolisher cannon option for a razor back

@Jeff Tracy - Thanks heaps for the kind words, I've always like dreadnaughts which is proven by every SM army I've ever collected having at least one in the mix.

@Reanimator - I'm really happy you like the models and I've never considered myself some one who can inspire however its awesome to know that I've managed to inspire you in some way.

Update thus far, Stern is almost done, need to complete his base and finish the face (I've been putting this one off because faces are a real weakness for me) Hope to post some pictures tomorrow when I get a chance.

I agree- the cleanliness of the paint job is really nice! Good on your lady for helping change your direction towards painting (so we can see more of your stuff ). Are you planning on basing the minis at all? I think a little bit of static grass and gravel/sand could help to finish them off. Either way, keep it up- I'll be forwarding this one to my cousin, who's looking forward to the updates for GKs. He's gonna love this thread.

@ HF Izanagi - I've passed on that I'm not the only one who is happy to see a change in me. Regarding basing, yep all models without something on the bases will get some loving (about the same time they get a repaint). All the current guys who have been painted in the new way have gravel and static grass on their bases.

Update, Stern's base is 80% done, face yet to be started...

Update number 2.
Stern is done.

This is a close up of the face.

I'm very jealous of those Dreadnoughts and that awesome Battlecannon Predator. Your conversions are full 'o dakka, and everything seems to work out very well. Best of luck finishing this off, and congrats on beating the WOW addiction!

Your stuff looks absolutely... I am right there with you. My wife helped me to beat my wow addiction almost 3 years ago. And 40k has been my creative gaming outlet ever sense. Sadly though my paint skills are not on the same level as yours, your minis look amazing. I look forward to following your progress on the army.

I like how you kitbashed DA/BT and DW to look like GK very creative especially your demo/apothecary marine. The ven dread is amazing could use it as a dreadknight when new gk codex comes out. Btw were did you get the legs for your standard bearer from DA or somewhere else they look familar..... Anyway I like what I'm seeing /subscribe

@Joshh - Thanks heaps WoW is a tough nut to crack. It seems I'm getting some great comments on the dread's maybe I should try make some more ones. Fingers crossed the Battle cannon razorback will look even better with the upgraded paint job

@The Ravening Jaw - Thanks, have you had thoughts on going back to WoW, that's the thing that worries me, addiction is a very real thing and I really don't want to relapse. I'd really like to see your models once you get some done, I'm sure with everyone's help we could get your skills higher - I'm hoping it happens to me as well

@Holycrusader27 - I'm honored to have my first subscriber so thank you very much, I'll do what I can to keep this updated as often as possible. Regarding the Standard Bearers legs, your right, they came with the DA sprue and as the general feel of the army is to be robed/hooded/tabbards fingers crossed the rest come out as good as those two.

Update: chaplain has a first coat of the bone color and his base has had the once over, started to put together pictures for the hover bike guide as well (its a surprisingly hard to completely remember how I put the first one together)

Update

I'm having some issues coming up with a great pose for my vet sgt/champion for my command squad. It's been about 3 hours now and I still don't have one that jumps out at me.

So I'm seeking the assistance from you guys.

Which one should I stick with or adjust? The weapons he will be fitted with is the Deathwatch Bolter and the sword from High Marshal Helbrecht
Spoiler:

Please help

Nice work on the Beamer.

I'm feeling sergeant #4 - the pointing one - he is just full of brooding bad-ass-ery. With a bigger bolter - (one with a strap?!) and looking to the left a bit more, should look good.

where would the sword go? cos the one on his back pack is ornamental right?

@elbrokendo - Cheers dude - with the static pose he would match the rest of the command squad, having him running with the rest just standing there on on a knee may look out of place. The beamer, while looking awesome isn't suiting the Techmarine model as his bionic legs are to thin giving him a real top heavy look, may have to break out the GS on normal legs and see what I can do. Regarding the sword, I'd put it on his hip so at least he has it.

@Commander Cain - Cheers ill pop one vote on number 5

@DarthLakey - I'm currently making (or trying to) another one with a full picture tutorial on how I do it, so if your keen check back here later as Ill post a link to it.

@Retrias - Cheers for the vote for one of the plasma guys, they all do look quite dynamic so I'll rock with those types of poses when I full finish the model.

Update. Have gotten about 40% of the way through all the builds for the command squad (minus the Commander) once they are glued together properly I'll post some pic's.

Hey all,

Been quite for the last few days due to Dawn of War 2: retribution being released.

Managed to get some painting time done last night.

Techmarine legs.

I'm thinking about changing the black writing to white to make it stand out more.

C&C welcome.

Paint is nice, as is most of the modeling. I dont like the dreads or the Plasmelta guy, it's just to much for me. The Leman Rhino doenst bug me as much for whatever reason. The conversion beamer looks great though!

@medabee - Cheers.

@whalemusic360 - Having read a lot of your posts/threads, your comments do mean quite a lot, thank you very much! I do agree that quite a bit of the force is OTT (Dreadnaughts bikes etc) you should see my Ultramarines force, they are stock standard with little to no conversions at all that might be a little bit better in terms of what you see is what you get.

Update for tonight.

I am really liking the way the Tech marine is coming out so far. I can totally see wanting to do some "illegal" units now and then to break up to boringness that is troop building. I'm just more of a "Less is more" kinda guy.

@whalemusic360 - I'd love to have a plain model or two, I think that my painting skills may leave a lot to be desired when there's no shiny conversions or kit bashing to distract the viewers

Loving the new plastic GK's on pre-order ended up dropping $550Aus on the Codex, Draigo, 1 DreadKnight, 1 Terminator Grey Knight box, 2 x PAGK box's and 1 Stormraven. Such a pain we have to wait till after the 2nd April to get them!

Update - Techmarine done, I felt like I kind of rushed him towards the end.

Hey,
Have just read through all this and am most impressed! Great stuff; I love the level of customisation you've got going on, and really impressed by how your painting has come so far in such a short time. I particularly like the C-Beamer (great use of flamer nozzles!) and the servo-arm, might steal the latter in particular. Are you going to invest in much in the way of new GKs?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/03/17 09:46:54

Post by: crimsonfist832

Your work is amazing Knightley, I love the subtle blends of the DA parts in your force and your Venerable Dreadnought looks mind-blowing, he's been for to many trips to the chapter armoury I just hope my GK's will look good when painted as yours do

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/03/17 20:39:23

Post by: Knightley

@inmygravenimage - Massive thank you, that c-beamer came to me while I couldn't get to sleep one night, what you can see there is what I remembered the next day (I swear it looked even better the night before haha) The Servo arm was my first real attempt as using plasticard to create something out of nothing (the hover bike was just adding stuff on to a pre-existing frame) and I learn't some very important things from doing so.

Investing into the new GK's? I would say yes, I've Pre-ordered 1 squad of TGK's, 2 squads of PAGK's, 1 Dreadknight, 1 Stormraven and drag. It's a hard time waiting for the new models to be delivered but yes I will be investing a lot of time into the new ones.

@crimsonfist832 - Cheers man I greatly appreciate your comments, I'm not that great a painter, I suspect having a light box makes up for quite a bit. When you've posted your pic's let me know I would be very keen to have a look

Update: Biker has about 4 layers of white on the 3 areas, 2 more then I'll do the red, do some black and post.

This is some good stuff here. I don't know if I'm too crazy about the blades, there a bit too blue and seem to lack a bit of dimension, i really like the treatment you did to Stern's sword though, are they all gonna end up that way?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/03/17 22:09:58

Post by: Knightley

@TheChronoTrigger - Yeah absolutely, the first blades were part of my get the force done quickly mind set, as such when I spent some time on sterns blade I was much happier with the result. I'll still do blue through to white but definitely will be doing the blades again!

@Asherian - Cheers! thanks for the compliment, having an army like this just takes a bit of time, you could have one if you have the time and money (getting 1 tac squad, 1 DA bits kit, 1 BT bits kit and 1 Deathwatch kit adds up in terms of cost)

@AngerFist - Cheers, thank you for the kind comments!

Update, servitor done. I'm not to pleased with the skin, I was trying a few to many new things and I think i made a bigger mess of it because of it. Tried doing purple/red washs near the mechanical joints, also tried to use a skin technique for rotting flesh, but used the wrong base colour I think as such the colour looks terrible, he's very close to a ninja turtle.

Overall it is just a servitor, and I have one more left to paint so I'll do better on that one.

Post by: Knightley

I had tried a Green wash from the base coat, which looked ok and I think had I worked up the skin tone as a normal skin tone it may have looked ok. What I may have to do is just try a Ogryn skin wash or hell, even Devlan mud for giggles. Thoughts?

Update: Sgt at about 80% done.

TBH I only ever use a devlan mud wash anyways, the old 2 foot rule is enough for me, if you can't see the detail at that point then you are usually your wasting time...then again I have never won a golden demon

Post by: zxwarrior

This to me depends on whether or not you will use the grey knights codex. If you do then your a noob, no offense but they are so overpowered it is not even funny. if not then they are epic and i love them.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/03/23 03:34:44

Post by: Knightley

@Blackhand - too right eh? I could just base them grey and be done with it. I would do this if I was a gamer, at this point i've only played 1 game with these guys and got a draw. but yeah might give that servitor a wash tonight and see what it looks like.

@zxwarrior - I've brought the GK codex as well as the SM codex however, not being such an avid gamer I've not really committed to running the army in a set way, there are bits of the force I could never use in the GK list (bikes, thunderfire cannon etc) yet theres no real normal SM option for kick ass marines and terminators so if I could offer a fence sit and say I'm allowing myself to do both armies.

Update: sgt done - I tried bionic arms on this guy as well also tried the new power sword method.

@elbrokendo - Noted on the hands, I recovered the hand and made the scripture much less intense, thank you for the comments

@Lord Kaesar II - I actually thought about trying to squeeze all three special weapons as well as a bolter onto one weapons but that just seemed silly compared to the rest of the army it was also an attempt at combining weapons which I hadn't tried before and learned quite a bit about doing it so if I choose to do another one it should be much better

@WM - Cheers man, and yes auto append is terrible, but I guess is stops people from shamelessly self bumping their own threads.

@Alpharius - Thank you very much for your comments it means a lot - seeing as you like the Jetbikes I have a treat for you.

Hoverbike number 2 completed! There are some subtle changes made to number 2, the smoke launchers are much more flush with the side and the twin linked plasma guns have colour for the coils. Apart from that I've done as much as I want to in getting them as similar as possible.

@whalemusic360 - I hope to not disappoint, with a Dreadknight and Stormraven to make I'll have to kick the creative juices into over drive to come up with 'awesome'

@Emperors_Champion - cheers man, I count myself quite lucky to have gotten the box as early as I have.

@Sageheart - Lucky is full extent of my awesome powers sadly, I did get a helping hand from GW though, they sent the box quite early and I suspect they were hoping that customs would be the ones to hold the whole process up.

@palehorse - Thank you! your comments help motivate me to keep on painting and posting.

Update:

Well, I feel slightly ashamed that I have the new box with codex and all I have done is read the codex and the latest WD (came yesterday) I've opened up all the boxes and washed the sprues in soapy water then dried them off. But that's really about it, I still have 3 marines a rhino and a wheeled bike that needs to be completed so they are still first on the list to get done but I promise, you'll get to see some new GK items painted and posted before the end of April

The Rhino is about 45% done and a heavy weapon trooper is at about 65% done so I should be able to knock the marine off in the next two days and make a dent in the Rhino as well.

Thank you to all of you who have posted it's great to see the support of Dakka

Damnit, how did I know you were going to choose that, I really want to do something special with it and at the moment nothing is springing to mind and I'd loathe to make the model, paint and base then come up with ideas. however I'll look into it and post some ideas to get feed back from you guys.

Update, marine 5 done so half tac squad complete.

I like how you went for non-metallic GK's. My only complaint is that some (actually alot) of the models have horrible moldlines...it really detracts from the models.

Post by: Knightley

@elbrokendo - Cheers man, I just hope as an army they will look just as badass as they do individually.

@whalemusic360 - Why did I know you would say that! whats better than one Dreadknight, three of course... in all seriousness though three would be kick ass so I will see how I go on the first one before committing to 3

@Darth Bob - Thank you, its a good thing I couldn't get the silver armour working then and I whole heartily agree with the mold lines, having never removed them before on any of my models its something I will have to get used to (similar to drilling gun barrels) so I will start working on that once this push is done (only 2 models left to do now) and hopefully this will raise my skill just that little bit more.

Update: Vet Sgt done

I really like the Sgt, probably my fav of your guys thus far. I love the hooded heads, but always have a hard time with em, so usually avoid them. You seem to have no such hold ups however.

Hey Knightley, I'm loving your painting stlye, really crisp and clean, which is something I'm trying to achieve in my own painting style.

The black lining...do you basecoat black first and then paint the grey/red on top leaving the lines showing though or do you basecoat in grey/red then paint the black lines in after?
I only ask because the black lines are really neat...

Any chance of a few work in progress piccies?

Oh and thanks for the piccies of your first painting attempts. i think mine were a couple of chaos terminators with splodges of blood red and enchanted blue with no other colour on.
I used to make up my own game where they'd fight each other, only I didn't have any dice so I threw darts at a dart board as their roll!

Edit - woot page 4!

@fox-light713 - Thank you very much

@Young_Logan - Thanks, I love the new plastic models, my god the options, the poses, the bits! its all better in every way, oh and one box can make up to four different aspects of the force (purifiers, strike, interceptors and purgatation) and I've been waiting so long for them to come out as well.

@WM - Cheers man, hoods were the bane of my existance as well, that and skin (I will have to post some of my very early skin attempts for poop and laughter) I feel that the trip to my flgs helped me to no end. fingers crossed there will be more models you like coming up

@Hangfire - Thanks! I too really like the new painting style that's evolved and I hope that I can only get better.

The black lining is done by a couple of steps, base coat the model white, base coat fortress grey, black wash, recover with fortress grey leaving the black line at the plate intersections (requires a steady hand) then edge highlight with spacewolf grey.

I'll definitley start doing more WIP shots if that's what people want to see!

Update: Rhino Completed its called Purafi sorry there is some glare on that part.

Damn! You did that with a wash, I would never have guessed. My own experience of washes is that they don't leave solid enough colour, but you've certainly convinced me to have another go. You just do the one wash right? Do you cover the whole mini or just try and hit the shade areas?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/04/06 05:49:13

Post by: Knightley

Yeah one wash, i guess its pretty heavy, either that or I am really bad at using washes but the result is good. Who knows, with the guys I do I end up covering the entire model due to having 3 main colours grey/metal/red and its worked out well so far.

so this was from last night

its the basic colours done with no wash, I'll do what I can tonight and post it tomorrow

Hi, I have been away for a while, amazing how real life (or virtual life) can affect things in the hobby world.
I have been considering grey knights for a while as a side project to my space wolves..... I want to theme it around the 1st war for Armageddon.

Anyway your Grey Knight stuff looks great and has certainly helped me to decide in the direction I would like to go..... Painting silver would drive me bonkers.

As a side note to the question posed earlier, which codex to use..... the simple answer would be both.

Grey knight codex for your full grey knights and Space Marine codex for your initiates. Just use 1 dorce as an ally for the other, problem solved. The "initiates" as grey knights in training they will not have acess to the full arsenal of the Grey Knights, including the psychic powers.
However they would still need to train as basic marines do, so they need to be able to use any standard weaponry that a marine would use. So you could justify kitting them out the way that you have.

If you wanted to do a piece of fluff, it could be for example, a grey knight crusade spanning decades and many warzones (pursuit of a greater daemon perhaps)with a heavily depleted contingent of Grey Knights, who while fighting alongside various chapters have taken a group of initiates on, due to their exceptional skills, psychic powers etc and their hatred of all thiings daemonic (plus maybe they know too much and are too valuable to waste).

They are being rigourously tested to show their zeal and loyalty to their new brotherhood. It might help explain the mix ofarmour types through the force too.

Just my thoughts.... But the main thing is that I like your army, I like your style and I cant wait to see more

Post by: Knightley

@E_C - cheers man thank you for keeping an eye on the thread as well, next push should have a DreadKnight in the mix so stay tuned for that

@dantay_xv - Thank you very much for your comments. I'm stoked I've helped you get some sense of direction for your GK army

With the codex I've ultimately allowed myself to use both if I want to. I have wargear (Thunderfire cannon, bikes, speeders etc) which are not featured in the GK codex however I still like the models yet on the flipside I really really like the GK models so it made sense to have a GK force I could use as well. So the short is both ever the fence sitter.

Fluff wise? I'm happy to admit I'm the least successful person in coming up with fluff for army's. I have a serious case of the Mary-sue'ness running through my veins and I hate to see my guys get cut down! I do really like the idea you've got going on and I would like to see more input from those who care to offer it regarding fluff for my army.

At the moment I have this idea running through my mind.

Spoiler:
The Grey knight Prognosticars on Titan detected a potential warp rift in a sector on the south eastern fringes and two ten man strike squads of Grey Knights, Senior Techmarine Onox and Librarian Elban were dispatched to intervene with the strike cruiser ‘Intolerance’ The Knights arrived to the sector and found the central worlds being overrun by the defense force who had turned to the dark gods. Loyalist forces of Ultramarines, Black Templars and Dark angels were in battle trying to regain control but were hard pressed due to the limited amount of their own forces that were available.

The Grey Knights scanned the major worlds and detect a warp disturbance on the Agriworld of Couture The Techmarine remained on board and the Knights deployed to the planet’s surface they quickly came under attack by traitor guardsmen who had light tanks and a few demons in support, after surgical strikes to the enemy’s support lines and heavy weapon teams they pushed through to the disturbance to find a ritual of summoning, The rituals central point was an Ultramarines librarian chained up with chaotic runes etched over his body writhing in agony as a daemon attempted to take over his physical form.

A vicious fight ensued as the traitors tried to bide time for the summoning ritual to complete allowing a powerful daemon to take over the librarian’s form. By this point the Grey Knight force has suffered minor losses during the strike to the summoning ritual and they suffered more during the battle at the ritual, however they managed to kill the host before the daemon burst forth into the material realm with the Grey Knight librarian striking the host with his nemesis force halberd and over loading the weakened mind of the host.

As the traitor forces were dispersed the Grey Knights took stock of their forces to find that only 7 Knights had survived along with the Librarian, however they knew that there was far more to be done in the sector. They teleported back to the strike cruiser ‘Intolerance’ Here the Knights had found out that the main hive world was finally being overrun and that the loyalist marines had started to turn on each other. A single transport shuttle attempted to bolt from the hive world and was being followed by three attack craft which were gaining rapidly, the attack craft scored direct hits on the engines and shield generators on the transport craft leaving it a sitting duck in space.

The transport bore the heraldry of the planets governor general and the Elban knew that for this sector to continue there would need to be a governing force and decided to assist, they quickly destroying the three attack craft and the Grey Knights invited the governor general and his retinue onto their cruiser while they formulated a plan of attack.

To find out what had happened in the sector they questioned the general only to find he was less than helpful as most Politian’s are, however his retinue’s psychic was happy to advise how it was he who had detected a looming shadow heading towards their sector and it was he who had contacted any loyalist marines in the area for support. His support request was answered by a company of Ultramarines including vehicle support, 4 tactical squads from the Dark Angels and a half company of Black Templars with vehicle support. The Ultramarines arrived first and as they made planet fall pockets of insurrection started to pop up across the hive world, the local guard forces were deployed and as they arrived to engage they turned their guns on each other and those that were left alive joined the traitors.

Similar events started to happen across all the worlds in the sector and that’s when the marines were deployed. One of the major battles turned badly for the loyalist’s when two squads worth of marines from the Ultramarines engaged their own forces citing their brothers had turned over to chaos. They were quickly eliminated however more and more marines started to turn and now only the true of heart marines were left and they were starting to lose ground.

The Grey Knight’s realizing they were going to be hard pressed to fight an entire planets worth of heretic’s sent a psychic request back to Titan for them to send more units, the requested was answered by Brother Captain Stern who quickly sent as many Knights as he could including a Dread Knight and Venerable Dreadnaught. Stern advised he would be accompanying the force as the threat level for the sector had gone up with the information relayed to him.

Elban realized that the support force would be weeks away at best and contacted the last remaining loyalist marines who were on the planet offering support where it was needed. In the coming weeks another four Knights fell to fighting however with the loyalist marines in support they held major vital areas. With the help of senior Techmarine Onox battlefield repairs were made to broken vehicles and adjustments were made to increase the firepower of others. To separate the loyalist marines from the one who had turned the Grey Knights made the remaining marines to repaint their armour in their same grey of their own, in the heat of battle they were able to differentiate friend from foe at a quick glance.

The arrival of the support fleet from Titan was met with great relief however upon their arrival a great warp storm started engulfing the sector stopping all communication and travel to and from the sector.

Cheers Graven! I'll have a squizz around my bits trunk and see if I'm in deficit in anything

Update,

Sadly not much to show today, spent most of the weekend trying to trim off flash and drill barrels (why on earth did I agree to do that, its so time consuming!)

However after looking at the Dreadknight for 6 hours and not getting much done, I did manage to complete this bad boy

Counts as a Seige hammer for my Ironclad dread, so turns out the Ironclad will be the first to get a repaint!

As highlighted earlier, I've hit a bit of a wall with the Dreadknight, the front baby carrier needs to be changed yet I'm face planting against the concrete on how to do so.

I figure I want to have a venerable dread sarcophagus as the front chest protector, but then what?

Do I add the carrier arms?

Or try to come up with something else? I'd like ideas from the masses

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/04/11 05:13:42

Add the arms, it looks nicer that way

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/04/11 07:14:16

Post by: Breotan

Only thing worse than the baby in a baby carrier is a baby slapped onto the chesk with velcro.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/04/11 08:03:23

Post by: inmygravenimage

Baby carrier arms look good! I loathe the dreadknight frame - it didn't work in Matrix, you'd think they'd learn - and was thinking ven dread bits the way forward. Good call mr!

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/04/11 09:43:20

Post by: dantay_xv

I like the venerable dread cover on the baby frame.

If you do not put the arms on the guy will look helluva squished in there. Or is it your intention for it to be a dreadknight controlled by an almost dead hero in a dreadnought sarcophagus?

In matrix the guys were unarmoured which was a big flaw, but on the dreadknight, the guys are in Termie armour, so he should be pretty well protected (do not have the codex to look at unfortunately).

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/04/11 20:49:18

Post by: Knightley

@bigmek35 - Agree with you on that, came back to it last night and with out the arms it just looked wrong.

@Breotan - Hahah, the images that conjures up.... has anyone tried the 'Fly on the wall' type attractions at fairs etc? basically your in a Velcro suit and you throw yourself at a wall made of the opposite Velcro trying the most bizzare landing poses possible... now imagine that with a terminator armoured suit of death....

@Graven - Cheers mate, the next hurdle is to make the font blend/match the current aesthetics of the DK, I have a feeling it's going to get worse before it gets better here

@dantay - Cheers for the comments, He will have his arms but I think I'll be adding on additional armour plating to beef him up 1mm cardstock should suffice there. Also looking at doing the same for his legs/feet/lower body as having an armoured top half and nothing below is a little naff.

Update

Close Combat marine for the command squad all blue tac'd up. just need to base him then on to painting.

Objective 1 trial. guns, lots of guns, the big crate in the back holds 3 Bolters. Still need to make a rack to hold the flamer and plasma gun.

Is the shoulder weapon to small?

Why's there a missile on the objective? No launcher to be seen!

I think the shoulder weapon will be interesting. I'm not good familiar with the DK yet to guess at scale (havent started one yet).

Fine WM, take this -

and the reverse -

Now for the bad news. I'm really struggling with the front of the damn DK i'm making very slow head way but some steps forward equal 2 steps back.

The wings on the side will need to be trimmed down, the gap between the top of the wings and the cables will be a skull. thoughts on the lights on top? does the shoulder mounted weapon work?

I like the shoulder weapon, but not sure on the lights.

How do you plan to put the arms on behind the wings? It looks great just curious to know if the rider is to be immoblie behind it or if he is still supposed to move around?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/04/15 03:42:50

Post by: Knightley

Cheers Graven, I'm still not sold on the RW parts, but if I can halve the thickness of the wings it might change my opinion of it.

Thanks WM after this part only the leg areas will be left to do, I have a small idea on it but not sure how they will look, but I may have to take a chance.

Thanks Dantay, the lights were an after thought I guess i'll have to see what the whole model looks like at the end before making a final call on to include it or not. The arms have a bit of movement behind the wings, and once trimmed up should be able to move even more freely. I think tonight I'll have to try and slim down the wings and see what happens next.

@Graven - Cheers matey, I really like those DA mech helmets and this one just screamed out "put me on him, now!"

@stonned - Thanks, RE: predator, I'll mark that one for repaint next so that you can get a closer look at the tank.

@Daxxx367 - Thank you! regarding the army I've got both codex's so that I can choose to have a SM army which can use the Thunderfire cannons etc and I have the GK codex so that I can run a pure GK army, currently if I point up what I have as SM's its at about 6000 points give or take, and if I point up as GK I think its at about 3000 points give or take (I have it in a spreadsheet at home - if anyone is interested I can post the lists up)

@c0un7_z3r0 - Thanks! hopefully the paint scheme I put on the marker does it some justice.

Update - Repainting of the Ironclad well underway, I really dislike repainting large objects...

I can't give it all way that quickly.

In the mean time I've tried my hand at another bit of fluff, there's no fighting yet, this is hopefully a build up piece - Please note, I still have issues at naming, but I have an Idea to sort that out shortly.

Spoiler:

Techmarine Koali opened the top hatch doors of the Rhino ‘Rleame’ he surveyed the ruined building they had been ordered to hold till morning. He noticed that the fading light gave the ruined building a blood red glow, foreboding at best, however Koali didn’t have the time to think further about it as there was fortifying to complete. He glanced up at the servitor stopped halfway through the ruined courtyard hauling a large chunk of masonry; irritation grew at having to babysit the mindless zombie. Dismounting the Rhino he moved closer to the court yard, Koali powered up his neural link and sent the move command the servitor to have it drag the masonry to the open doorway to create a roadblock. The blank eyes shifted towards the open door and started to shuffle towards it.

There was a small hiss as his helmet’s vox channel opened up and Koali recognized the familiar voice of Captain Lirael “This is Captain Lirael of the Dark Angels, I am in command of this defense as per Brother Captain Stern’s direct orders. Send sitrep for all attached squads” First to report in was the half strength command squad’s Veteran Sargent Lokni “Captain, command squad has the second level floor completed for defense, our heavy bolter is set up covering the street advance to the north and the building to the west has been set for demolitions”

Second to report in was the “Black swords” tactical squad Sargent Emorej “Captain, Black Swords has split into combat squads we are covering the left approach and the north approach” Koali regretted that he did not have enough time to repair the Black Swords heavy Plasma cannon after the energy cell had burned out after three days of fighting the previous week, if only he had more time.

Third to report was the “Devil Tails” tactical squad Sargent Cromat “Captain, Devil Tails are ready to reinforce any of our attacked flanks.”

The next voice Koali didn’t recognize however the Marine was reporting in for the assault squad. Koali quickly remembered that the power coils for that squad jump packs were on board the strike cruiser ‘Intolerance’ getting charged, “Looks like they are going to be on foot.” He had to silently chuckled, it didn't seem to bother them, and any half strength assault squad was something to be feared. Koali waited for the report to finish then opened a private channel to the new Sargent of the assault squad. “Hail Sargent, Techmarine Koali here, I offer my rhino transport to you for the nights defense” Sargent Kahui’s response came after a brief pause “Praise the Emporer Koali, I will be happy to accept your offer, and I promised to bring it back to you in working order”

Just catching the last part of the fifth report Koali heard the very familiar voice of the tank commander from the Predator tank “Gir”. Prior to moving to this location he had repaired the drive train on the tank and remembered the machine spirit had been quite unhappy with the hasty repairs. Koali uttered the prayer of endurance to the Omnissiah trusting that his repairs would hold and when given a moment he would fix the tank’s sponsons to get the vehicle back to full fighting potential. He recalled that while completing the repairs he had checked out Senior Techmarine Onox’s battle cannon modification and had been quite impressed with the innovation he had put into getting the massive cannon mounted to the hull, he made a quick mental note to speak to the Onox to get more knowledge on how he had achieved such a feat.

Lastly it was time for his report. “Captain, fortifying our position is progressing, Thunderfire cannon ‘Validus’ is in position to support our northern advance. Current ammunition stocks will only be sufficient for a five volleys of air burst and four volleys of surface impact“

The captain's response was “Emperor Protects!” then the vox link went silent. The force only had to last till morning.

Time crawled for the defenders. Every thirty minutes situation reports were sent in, they were always clear. The communications marine from the command squad used his Auspex every hour to check for movement on the advance front. So for now they waited.

Please let me know what you think.

Some real interesting stuff there Knightly. Needs some grammar and spelling editing. Other than that it's a good read. I think in paragraph one or two you used the phrase "set up" twice in the same sentence and it's a bit awkward.

I feel it could use a bit more dialogue as well. Not sure exactly but it feels too distant, more of the perspective of someone watching from a distance than being right there with the tech marine listening to his vox cast. Also maybe throw something in about a prayer to the machine spirit of the rhino he was repairing? Just my two cents. But your almost ready For the black library!

Now that's some C&C thank you!!

I've re-written what I can, for both pieces of fluff (check page 4 for the other) I've got names now for the most of the featured marines. I must confess, I never passed English as a subject so if some one read's something and it comes out weird or spelling/grammar is off please let me know (PM is fine or post here) and I would be happy to adjust it.

Easter egg? I like easter eggs. Interceptor squads painted as white moths?

Is it the smoke launcher on the Rhino? I actually don't know how smoke launchers work. I saw a Rhino with the smoke launcher barrel covered and not drilled or painted as a barrel, as if it was a canister that got launched and not a barrel that shot a canister, if that makes any sense. It turned my world upside down.

Anyway, keep it up Knightley. You're churning these out like there's no tomorrow. Very impressive considering how high quality they are. I'll have to read the fluff later on tonight, although I might not be the best for constructive criticism when it comes to English and creative writing. My command of the English language is convoluted at the best of times and down right ridiculous otherwise.

Knightly, your writing has improved a lot. Dialogue is really quite tricky, I think you did a great job. I began writing a novel years back, got about 5 chapters in and life got in the way. I then lost the file which was unfortunate. Never picked it back up. It's encouraging to see you plugging away. I haven't had the time to read the fluff on page 4. When I get the time I will read it over. I did read some things in the fluff above that I would change/correct. But I'm on my phone right now and that sort of thing is best for a pm. I'll try to read it tomorrow.

Sorry for the delay this weekend, had my birthday and spent a lot of it away from home, eating and drunk.

@Chomo-Uri - Cheers! I guess I have been putting out a fair few models, perhaps I should slow down a bit and see if the painting improves? at this point I believe I'm suffering from a bit of shock (see the below pictures) so I might just have to keep churning them out for the mean time.
My interceptors will be a squad of old metal PAGK's with the teleporter backpacks, but white moths would be quite interesting. the easter egg? not quite sorry, however you have an interesting point with the smoke launchers, I would assume that my ones are internally fired canisters (through the tube) I do have some of the eternally fired ones, not sure where I'll put them though.

@Chrono - Thanks man, I'd be pretty gutted if I had lost five chapters worth of writing, lucky for me all my stuff is online Did you have a chance to critique the writing yet?

Update time:

So turns out I have pretty awesome family! My parents called to say happy birthday and that they had transferred money to my bank account for me to spend it on what ever I wanted! sweet time for some models! My partner then dragged me out to the FLGS and said pick something, cha-ching! I'll have this box and brought another one. Then later that night my brother pop's over with a present, woot another box! so I also decided to spend a bit more money on something for myself and ordered a spray gun, Razorback and venerable dread (because they had run out) spoils below -

I decided to take stock of the mounting boxes as well, I got a little spooked at the amount of converting/painting ahead of me.

I did manage to get some painting done this afternoon though, heres an almost complete repaint of the Ironclad.

Love the Ironclad. Whats the points stand at now?
Also are you going with the redeemer or crusader LR?

Cheers Daxx,

Going with a hybrid, landraider, with extra armour, chainguns for the front turret, looking at throwing a predator turret on top and using all available side sponson ports for redeemer set and a lascannon set.

Points wise if I use a SM codex it's about 5500ish points (list was created about three months ago) and if I use a GK codex I could squeeze in about 3700ish

One day soon I'll put together a combined list for giggles.

@Dantay - Thanks mate, I have been quite proud of how the painting has come along! and yes I agree basing models make the whole thing come together.

@Count - Brutal is as brutal does I thought putting up a before and after would help show the progress from how I used to paint to how I'm painting now.

@WM - Cheers mate

@Graven - Thank you!

Update: the last two days have gone mighty quick so minimal done on the painting front. The only update is a WIP of a metal GK interceptor

If I could go back and do all my models again I'd have the base coat done with the GW foundation paint Astronomicion Grey (spelling?) and only gone up to Codex Grey I think it looks much more foreboding as a dark grey instead of a medium/light Grey

@Rev. Reiko - Cheers! I put a lot of effort into trying to learn how to do faces. No worries about reading the whole thing either, most forum dwellers I think like to look at pictures and there's plenty of that in here, and for those who want to read a bit I've got fluff stories

@Chrono - Thanks mate, Your eye is keen my friend, I tried a base of Astronomicon Grey instead of Fortress Grey followed up with a black wash and I found that the recessed areas are now left much darker. I also find that the Fortress Grey has much better coverage with the new base, so while in WIP the models will look much darker, never fear though I bring them back up to the same colour as the rest of the force.

No Pic update today, I left my camera's SD card at work so didn't get any pictures done. I have however made a new larger light box, large enough for land raiders and larger squads, so I will be test driving it tonight with my older land raider crusader. Expect pic updates tomorrow!

O dont worry, ill read it (i read Gits's Plog start to finish when i first joined ), just wanted to post to say nice job, and im looking forwad to the fluff too, always a fan of home-made fluff.

U know, i like that they are a bit blue/grey instead of silver, the new marine looks ace, but much, much darker, much more 'traditional'. Its a good look though

Edit: Page six, didn't think this blog would get this far!

@Chrono - In my opinion I found more enjoyment out of making my lightbox. give it a try all you need is a cardboard box, baking paper and some tape

@Rev. Reiko - Haha lucky for me when I joined it was only about 60 pages long (Git's plog that is) so no worries mine isn't that large.

Update: Pic's of the new lightbox, and now I can fit larger models into it!

The lightbox!

Now I took some pic's of my Landraider Crusader (painted in the old style... very quickly) slightly embarrassed by it so it gets the spoiler tags
Spoiler:

I also chucked the Ven dread in again to see if the pictures were drastically different.... turns out there isn't any real difference. This is good news as I wont have to take all new pics

I am pretty sure that I found the easter egg from page 4 of your blog here. The "Modeling oddity" is that the rhino is not built correctly. The lights on the rhino were glued on to the wrong spot, they are actually lower than they should be, and you can see the little tabs where they are supposed to go. I have enjoyed looking at your blog, and think that your painting is really good. I am going to steal the weapon objective idea if that is ok with you. i have a lot of extra weapons, and it seems like a good way to utilize them. Cheers

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/05/13 01:06:32

Post by: Knightley

@Chrono - Yeah, basically any waxy paper that will diffuse light well, I tried a solid sheet of white paper but the resulting light was very poor (hint plastic wrap is just like a window - no diffusing)

@Kraenox - Thank you for your comments it means a lot

@Tellis - Close enough for me, the rhino lights were put there as a tester and I left them there as I thought it looked alright. By all means use the weapons cache idea I do have one request, you have to post a pic here once your done

Update:

Interceptor marine completed: Brother Dukagos, I've gone with a Black face trim as I wanted to see if I could highlight black, it looks ok I think but could be better.

Nice looking model Knightly. One beef i have tho is with the halberd. Not sure I care for the paintjob on the weapon. It looks nice on the swords, but i'm not too sure it carried over to the halberd. Just my thoughts.

@Stonned - Yep its the old OOP metal GK with a new personal teleporter backpack, I was going to have 5 GK's with actual jump packs but the conversion work I was going to have to do to get it looking right was putting me off doing it. then with the new codex I saw something I could do quickly

@Chrono - damn, you're getting far too good at noticing I did rush that blade. Started of going light far to quickly, then screwed the blade up, then thought I could bring it back... I couldn't. So here you go, I've re-done it does it look better?

So quite a busy weekend painting wise, I hung out with a mate of mine (elbrokendo on the forums with an awesome DE thread here who was giving me some critiques on some of the stuff I've been doing. He brought up that while the painting has been getting better some of the colour choices are to similar to each other and wash together, in particular the chest eagles beign white on a light grey background. He made comment that the siege hammer on the Ironclad looked really good, and why not carry that motif through out the army. I took his words under advisement and tried a test model to see if I liked it. the next day I redid all the newer models with the change, I personally think it looks much better as now it stands out and brings contrast to central part of the model, please see spoiler tag for comparisons

@stonned - Yeah when you look at a single model they are very spacemarine, it's only when you see them with force weapons does it start to sink home. The Battle cannon predator wont make it in to this 2nd push (see front page WIP list for the current lot) but I will do it for you in the 3rd push I guess you'll have to keep coming back to read this thread.

@NF09 - If I do end up staying up all night painting I will get some pics just for you, as it happens my stamina for staying up to the wee hours of the morning has slowly dissipated over time, it gets to 11:00 and I'm almost asleep where I stand/sit.

@chrono - I'll keep painting if people want to keep seeing stuff.

Just let me know if anyone (and I mean anyone, including the lurkers) have any preferences they want to see done in the third push post here (check the front page under the 'To do' spoiler and the 'where I'm at' spoiler)

I currently have a repaint of the battlecannon predator/razorback and a repaint of the first tactical squad)

Update: only a small one today, painting 3 models the same way is new to me so quite slow going - 2 Packs, 2.5 arms and 2 bodys have been done with Fortress Grey

Looking good! i think the Grey scheme is defiantly better than the normal silver tbh. i think on the more normal marines you should add some red and white patches, on the shin guards maybe, with some gk logos. might make them look more gk, and i think it would make them look more like in training as well. Not sure thats what your going for with all of the non gk models but its an idea.

Post by: Knightley

Cheers for the comments. The plan for the non-GK units was to be attached to the force having the paint job and some individuality so adding more red/white might be a great idea (I was hoping the Death watch should pads would include them into the Inquisition forces)

Update:

Interceptors are at about 85% done: NFW need to be done and more inscription on the large plates of armour as well then finish off the bases and they should be done.

Comments welcome of course.

@Rev. Reiko - Cheers, picking out detail? depends on what detail I'm looking to enhance, if its the writing near the top of the chests, its a Tin Bitz cover, black wash then light dry brush of Shining Gold. If its pipes/joints then I cheese it with Boltgun Metal with a heavy wash of Badab Black. Typically It's patience and having painted for a while its how I've ended up painting.

@Graven - Wow, that is some very kind comments! thank you very much.

Update: Objective Marker 1, I decided to give Yellow a try, and I have to say, yellow is worse than white imo, I had considered doing a Yellow/other colour for my Eldar army repaint, but after doing the one marine helmet, yellow can DIAF.

Things to note, eyes are not lit up, I was trying to give the impression of an inactive helmet - likewise for the Auspex. The crate of bolters has some minor detail added to it, a 'This way up' arrow, a shipping label and some writing akin to a serial number of the crate, the clip box is similar (detail lost as the box gets covered up)

Front'ish, if this thing has a front I guess

It's a pity you don't game as much, I'm sure a TO would love to work out a deal where a couple of your objective markers is the first place prize (but even at "minimum wage" it would be a labour of love on your part).

EDIT: Just wondering what you've used as the metal floor for the base. It's cloth, right? Canvas? Any particular prep done to it?

Oh wow, quite a few replies to the Obj marker, looks like I had done something right with it!

@Chomo - Perfect, that was the look I was going for. I 'may' look at going to Comp's as just a spectator first. Bring along the army for show and tell and see what people have to say about the Obj markers then see if they could want them as prizes. The "grating" for the base was an old card holder from my wallet, its a nylon weave thing but its only big enough for another 2-3 bases total, after that I'll have to source something else.

@WM - Cheers!

@Graven - I see what you did there, and it was nicely done I saw your kit bashes so we're even on the envy scale I think.

@Chrono - OSL..... yikes that's definitley having to take a leap forward. Here is the small issue I have with OSL thus far. If I try it and it looks good, I would be inclined to go back and do it for all models which would need it, and at this point a third repaint is just to much. I may however just slap together a random marine/terminator and give it a try to see if I can do it. Of course I will post pictures.

@Stoned - Thanks

Update:

Working on, Interceptors Sgt, Tac Marine, and a normal PAGK with halberd.

Thanks for reading

You definitely did a great job with the objective marker Knightley!
i would love to see you take a crack at OSL, but totally understand re-painting all your models again. Maybe (if it works the way you want it to of cors) use it to pick out certain models? Like your HQ units only or something? just a thought.
EDIT:O and yeah i meant the bits of the armour which are kind if 'built in', like where it has rivet marks or something on the thigh plates. So, Boltgun metal and Badab black, Cheers man! never worry about doing it the way you've been taught, if it aint broke, dont fix it

Yes! page 7!

Cheers Rev. - The detail on the thigh plates, like the sunk in lines? that's just a foundation grey with badab black wash. not much to it, the contrast which makes it stand out is the fortress grey on either side, it makes it look darker than it really is. the joints are the Boltgun metal with badab black wash. I will see what I can do with OSL on a test model and if it works well I might put it on Draigo being the head of the force. then look at filtering it down to the captains.

Update, Grey plates done on the next three. No that much to look at for the moment, I *should* have these guys done by the weekend, then I can work on the attack bike and the Paladin Terminator

I have a fair few, This weekend I'll take them all out and do a large group shot (well it might not seem that large in hindsight)
I don't know if I'm working fast but I work constantly, I get about an hour and a half painting a night, except on Thursday's when my partner is doing studies at university so I have the entire night to paint - coincidentally that's tonight

Opinion time: I've had an idea sitting in my head about the Paladin Terminators and I'd like to get some feedback on it.

Currently the army has a Fortress Grey look about it, there are some small pockets of Red (Techmarines) Black (Term Chaplain) and Blue (Term Libby). I am wondering if on the Paladins I take the armour from the Dark Grey base coat and only bring it up to Codex Grey, give that an edge highlight or Fortress Grey and a top highlight of Spacewolf Grey, I'd still keep the Blue weapon blades and Red weapon housings. What do you all have to say?

Personally, I think it's ALWAYS a good idea to somehow set off different units, whether it be with base edges or actual color schemes.

I'd say go for it, atleast on one to see if you like it. My personal preference is the classic scheme, but to put it in perspective i plan on washing my paladins with red wash versus the standard blue. I say paint them however you like and then change it to make it better.
If at first you don't succeed, call and audible and try again. Oh, and in case I haven't said it yet, big fan of yours, like what you're doing with the GK's. Inspiring to see how much you get done, especially since I'm working on my own GK army as well. Hope to see your Paladins real soon!

Totally agree with you on this one!

It's why I added Black face plates to the interceptors, also why I kit based the snotlings out of the normal tac marines. I'll have to come up with a change to the "Devastators/Purgitators" to set them apart as well, perhaps red face plates to match the large weapons which will be red as well?

Your take on a Red wash over the silver armour could be very interesting to see so I'll keep an eye on your blog to await your posts

Also big thanks for offering your advice/comments as well.

Idk if one shade of grey up will look. I feel it may look more like a mistake than a change. What about a different color? Like white? or red? I think White would look nice as palidins are the holiest and purest of warriors.

True,

Whites a right pain to paint through What I might do is give the helms a bone look, perhaps green eyes, with that combined with the darker grey might give a stark enough contrast for it to look semi decent.

Red might make them look to much like my Techmarines, but it could look pretty cool. I've seen Soultang's Red GK's and I like the look of them combined with the blue swords.

The lighter colour scheme is an excellent idea!(or white for that matter)
and yes the Purifiers squad having matching faceplates and weapon housings would be epic too, good thoughts Knightley.

Another Idea to set apart your Purigation Squad (not sure if you've purchased models for it yet) that I think would look great would be if you bashed some of the Legion of the Damned models.

Or Greenstuffed flames. My thing with the purigation squad is that - in my mind mind you - they are the roid rage version of the purifiers. Slower paced, just decimating everything. So for me darker color for them would be great.

I haven't thought of using purgation units, but another idea would be to utilize a dark purpleish color somewhere since purple was traditionally a regal color. But again, I can honestly say I struggle to think abstract to the traditional GK's. They were the reason I started playing haha.

@Rev. Reiko - Oooooh White helms with white weapon housings, I hadn't even considered that! Might give them a bash for the next push (including the battle cannon pred/razorback) I wonder if having white in light grey could end up being lost as the colours are too similar? hmm, I could have the same dark grey from the Paladins with white helms, and the Paladins could have a dark bone colour (or even a light bone)

@Markillius08 - re the Purgitation squad, I have 2 boxes of PAGK's one is going to be for my Purifiers, the other was going to be for the Purgitation squad with the remainder of the CC weapons kit bashed in to the next tac squad, I do like the Idea of the LoD models for them, My concern is the fire motif might get confused with the purifier motif which is also based around fire. I feel I will have to think on it and hope that the new fine cast range will include LoD models for me before I commit to it.

I do like the idea of purple however, I reckon a liberal wash of Badab Black could make it quite regal as well, of course I would then have to try get more purple into the force to justify it, more thinking will be required I think.

Ok, how about the 'Elite' choices having the dark grey armour (providing it looks ok) with light colour on the helms (in this case white for purifiers and bone for Paladins) I don't currently have the codex on me but are there any other elite choices they can have?

The Elite choices are as follows:

Techmarine
Purifier
Venerable Dreadnought
Paladin Squads
Assassins
Warbands

That's it. Also, just completed my first Purifier Body - Head WiP to be Started/Completed tomorrow(ish)?

Also, Check out the pics on my blog - I used multiple colors for the seals (as i'm sure they wouldn't ALL be red - and I think it will be easy to tie the color in in other squads and units.

Cheers Markillius, quite a few on the elite choice list. I may leave my Ven. Dread as Fortress grey as I put quite a bit of time into him and a repaint doesn't entice me enough to make him darker, the other ones make sense though, I have a vindicare which needs a trip to Mr S. Green and a repaint and I'm not about to get warband's so I could very well do elites as the Dark Grey. sounds like a plan.

I had a look at both of your Sig blog links but couldn't see any updates, is there another place you're updating?

Lol yeah, bout that....... It's tough to keep up with a dedicated blog when you're struggling to put stuff up on Dakka. This is the ACTUAL new blog. Has a LOT more stuff done by comparison.

Been seriously considering hiring someone to update my blog for me or to just do away with it for good in lieu of Dakka. Lol that's also up for advice. Cheers!

With that in mind, I am quite the Dakka advocate I'd bin your external blog and just use Dakka as your home course that's just my advice.

Bad news...

My camera just made a small pop... the LED screen went black, then the lens started to retract, it stopped half way through now nothing works.

Looks like its time for an upgrade this weekend.

Bad times with the camera (an excuse for an upgrade is always welcome though ), hope you get it fixed.
Having all the Elites (minus the Ven Dread because he looks excellent as is) all having the Dark Grey colour scheme would look really good, with the varying helms to differentiate them. Glad you liked my idea, but boy you ran with it! The bone colour would be brilliant on the Paladins, but i know what yuo mean about the colours blending in. Test model time again?

@Markillius, yes Gitsplitta is definitely the man to talk to about keeping a blog on the go (his Mantis Warrior blog is ~156 pages and counting! plus he has 3 others on the go :S), and being another Dakka disciple, i would advocate having your Dakka blog your main one (its always easier keeping things in one place, and if you are logged in and posting already, the blog would be right there ). Hope that helps.

@Revenent & Knightly - Yeah, pretty sure Dakka's the way to go, specially since I'm not a big name (would be tough to run a blog and have people look at it without anyone knowing about it).

Also, here's a question I wanted to run by you guys - Sorry knightly for jacking your thread.... =D

I was thinking about the dark color scheme for elites and I was wondering what you guys would think of doing paladins in the mythril silver, and doing thin washes of black until it's a darker, almost mat black what still has that shimmer behind it? Either that or could be done for mordraks ghost knights. But personally, the ghost knights I plan on doing will be done ala LoTR - thank you crazy awesome ghostly green ghost army!

Knightley: high-five for the Dakka conversion *raises hand*

Markillius, congrats for making the transition (if you decide to in the end), Dakka is great for P&M blogs an support while you are doing them.
I have to admit that im not the best person to ask in all matters painting, i just know when i see something i like. Your idea does sound good though, so long as the silvery sheen does still come through. The ghosts idea is excellent

All good on the OT I wont have any pictures till this weekend anyway.

@rev. Reiko - Fist bump ftw another regular for the flock

Question:

Are you looking to have dark silver with the central colour being brighter than normal?

The reason I ask is that Mithril is the shinyest/shiniest/shiny est of the GW metals, of your wanting to go dark by all means go Mithril and wash with a couple of coats, I suspect the effect that you will end up with is a (forgive this confusion) bright dark colour. My advice would be use a spare piece of arm from a PAGK box (so many bits spare...) and give it a try, you'll quickly see if it works well or not.

I'm not sure if this would work. What about having Mithril Silver heavily watered down then mix in Badab black in to it so that you still get the darkening quality of the wash, but has the light silver specks as well. I wonder if it would work.

Post by: Markillius08

@ Knightly - The idea is from this mans blog:

http://metcalfedan.webs.com/howtomakemetallica.htm

I've done random bits before this way, and it gets that end result matte-black metal color really well. But the problem for me is that it's TOO matte.

The plan was to do it that way, and then uber, i mean UUUUUUUUBBBBBBBBBBBEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR thin down mythril silver, to where it's basically 0/100 parts paint to water - then just gently wash the model repeatedly. This shouldn't cover up the black/metal look, but should add a bit of top layer sheen here and there, just a tad.

The Idea in my head is to end it looking as similar to those sexy black stingrays, or any nice car really, that has that smooth, flat yet glossy black paint job. The kind that when you look at it it looks like it's behind a half an inch of thin glass, but reflects really well.

My end hope would be that same effect - reflective shine + metalic undertone.

Also gonna try my hand at finishing up Janua's head and power weapon tonight. Should be interesting haha.

PS: I have no idea how to do it, but i really want to make theghost knights look like their being held together by sheer power - kinda do a rust thing with them but make it so there's blue emanating from between the armor plates or just plain old light. Yeah for drybrushing!

dantay_xv wrote:Why not paint as you sid but try a thin coat of gloss over the top, to give it a shiny sheen

Could work, only thing is that I don't want them to be too shiny. Rather, i'd like the light to just pick up those few flecks over the top coat to make it have a dark metal tone, but the occasional fleck of shine to show that it's bright.

Lol that and i've never found a gloss i liked.

So you gonna go for a black/silver mix and gradually add mithril for highlights, or edge highlight?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/05/26 22:28:46

Post by: Markillius08

Probably no high lights. After several coats of even that thin of a wash, it will pool in recesses and give a lil more of that scattered glean i'm wanting.

But nothings set in stone. I'm an avid fan of trial and error, because I've liked something, seen something else to try, and (i'm being serious) 28 variations and restarts later, BAM! perfect.

Very interesting read on that gentleman's blog I'd not thought about doing it like that only using washes to shade.

Going off of that idea, what about trying your mordrak's guard as a mix of Mithril Silver with Scorpion Green perhaps 1 to 1 mix, then shade with Thrakka green? you could then pick up the highlights with white to give it a more ghostly appearance.

My trial and error isn't as in depth as yours is Markillus I will use a couple of test arm's for trial on colour schemes. I did this with my first GK test scheme - Black armour with dark purple highlights, it looked awesome however I had a Black/Grey Tau force and a Black/White Eldar force and another Black/enter colour here force wasn't really going to test my skills at all

Okay, last suggestion, boltgun base, highlight with chainmail or mithril, then black wash, you keep th sheen and also get some definition on the armour plates.

Do you plan on using gold for the text or keep it muted?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/05/26 22:47:22

Post by: Markillius08

Would be gold, but probably not the exact same as the other units. Same general color, but more washing with gryphon sepia to dull it down a bit. also may use less in the mixing of certian colors. Again, love that trial and error!

@Knightly - Sounds interesting. Also, You are talented sir - three armies! I can barely work on 1 ahah.

I don't know what my next project will be. Need to finish my wolves, but SM are getting old fast for me. GK's not so much, but just the whole standard overplayed part is killing me. Thinking Nurgle will be my next challenge. Iron Monger are a constant thought though.

Oh mint, page 8 already, seems like only a couple of days ago I was on page 7.

Here's a kicker, The DA's... they were painted in the mid 90's when I was 14 through to 16 the Ultra's were painted when I was on deployment in Bosnia in 2000 and the eldar and tau were 2003ish I think. I'd be lying if I said I am proud of the painting on the DA's however at the time for my skills/age they were awesome

All up I think I have about 12k points worth of marines give or take 1k so I know what you mean about reaching saturation levels and if/when I finish my GK's (IE my idea pool dries up) I plan on flexing my might towards the Eldar, now that I know how to paint white properly and fine cast has been released.

If anyone is interested I can (with the soon to be brought camera) post up some closer shots of the old models.

Update:

New Camera, had to play around with the settings to get a picture I liked, took lots of shots, in fact about 200 odd. Needless to say all my armies have Light boxed pictures of every model...

However for the moment, ill post the updates from Friday I wasn't able to due to the lack of a camera. 3 Models entered, 3 models left it's not really like Thunderdome but I'm struggling to start it off.

My first PAGK marine from the new range, Brother Hona

And lastly Sgt Cain of the Interceptor Squad

All 5 are done now

Thanks for checking in.

Looks great as usual! I especially like the objective marker, it really looks like a bunch of swag casually lying around as someone left it, maybe as they got interrupted by whatever army you are fighting atm. Great stuff indeed!

And I agree about black, I find black very hard to highlight, but I'm getting better I think. But way to often black tends to end up being flat and boring or the highlights gets way too bright when I do it. But next time I'll paint joints I'll paint them in some dark blueish-gray and wash them with black to see if that's better...

Milestone reached today, my 1000th post!

@Count - Thanks for the comments on the Obj. marker. Regarding the highlighting black, you could also mix a dark grey with black to add only subtle hints of a highlight, it's a pain to do which is why I'm cheating with a black wash afterwards.

@Rev. Reiko - Cheers, I had such a laugh when I saw it on the camera.

@Graven - Thanks mate

Having just read through this blog, i must say that it is rather good. Good enough to take up my lunch break at work and stop me from going to have a smoke.

Knightly's Grey Knights - They stopped me from smoking in my lunch break.

They look awesome, and i am going to have to pinch your grey for a squad of my marines.

I like it. Good start. Little skeptical about the helm (it looks great, don't get me wrong), but would really like to see it washed or have some darker color in the recesses. Personal preference though.

BRAVO BATTLE BROTHER!

Oh wow! some lovin' for the Paladin head it seems

@Graven - Thanks man, I was apprehensive over including tilt shields and back paraphernalia but I figured what the hey, they are supposed to be a bit gaudy as they've worked hard for it.

@DSS - Thank you for your comments it means a lot.

@Lorna - Wow, you've read through the whole lot, I'm impressed! I'm even more honored that I've even managed to occupy you and stop you smoking for that one lunch break. By all means pinch the Grey and let me know when you've posted some pic's I'd like to see your take on it.

@Markillius - Cheers I was skeptical as well then I started, a dark grey and a bone helm, how would it look? I guess this is a good test model.

I figured I'd post a shot of the head face on so you can all see a bit better.

Edit: eww zoomed in it's not so crash hot....

Post by: Knightley

@Rev. Reiko - Some very kind words you have there, thanks heaps

@Markillius - I small hint on how I did that, quite a few thin coats of watered down paint for the bone and white, then a really small brush for the eyes again with watered down paint. oh and a steady hand

@Graven - Thank you!

So last night got about 45 mins to paint so finished the extreme highlighting on red/grey, then started to glue together. Also finished the NFW tried doing a double helix on the blade but you can't see it in these pic's but ill do better pic's tonight once the inscription is done

So all that's left to do on this guy is inscription, some personal heraldry on the right shoulder pad and finish the base.

One thing, are you planning on putting any inscriptions/ writing on the ammo case for the psycannon, it looks a bit out of place being plain for some reason

@DSS - Thanks! I hope to not disappoint to much with the NFW, pic's below

@Rev. Reiko - Cheers, inscription was the last thing to be done, there's some soft inscription done on him now

@Stoned - Thank you.

Update: Paladin complete, decided to go for a white based inscription on the armour as black writing would be lost on the dark grey. I went for a simple shoulder heraldry as well as this model has a lot of detail all ready.

So darker armour with a light head.... does it work?

PAGE 9! so awesome....

@Rev. Reiko - Thank you

@Graven - I'm sure you'll do your guys some justice as well, we all had to start somewhere and with the community backing you I'm positive your skills will shine.

@Blackhand - Cheers, and thank you for taking the time to post on my blog, I know your time is limited when it comes to modeling.

@DSS - No worries, what in particular were you looking for in a tutorial? I can assume you mean the bone, but want to be doubly sure.

@Markillius - I'll do my best not to disappoint on the rest of the Paladins!

@Kenshin - Thanks!

So Update time:

We had a 3 day weekend in NZ of which I spent most of it away from home either chilling with mates or family, got to see the new X-men movie and got a small amount of painting done (probably only 4 hours or so)

So, attack bike sitting at approx. 80% possibly 85% done. The realization that I hate painting bikes weigh's heavily on my enthusiasm for this model and the last two I have to make. However one of the last two is a jet bike, and the sgt to boot so I will be upping the modeling game on that one.

@Graven - Cheers!

WOW! I feel ashamed I hadn't seen this blog earlier, but I really like the conversions you've done with your GK's. One of the cool things when you find a blog after its been going for awhile is you can easily see the growth, as your painting and modeling keeps improving.

I especially think the ironclad and techmarines are fantastic. I love all of the writings and details you've added to the normally smooth blank gray armor as well. Keep it up! I look forward to more updates.

@DSS – Thanks man, I’m just as curious as to how it will come out.

@Markillius – Cheers!

@IceAngel – Thank you for taking the time to read my blog, I hope to keep you entertained as the blog grows.

Update time:

I didn’t get much painting done last night, mainly because I got to have my very first game with my GK’s with the new rules. I apologize that I have no pictures so I’ve done what I can with MS paint, please go easy on me (MS paint is not an easy medium to use to convey a battle!) and it doesn’t end pretty. I made an army list up on the spot in 10 minutes and didn’t even have my codex on me.

Army lists should have been about 1000 points.
Spoiler:

Grey Knights
1 Brother Captain in term armor with master crafted weapons
1 Techmarine
5 Terminators with Psycannon
5 Strike marines with incinerator mounted in a razor back
5 Purgitation marines with 1 incinerator, 1 psycannon, 2 psylincers
5 Interceptor marines

Dark Eldar
1 Archon + 9 Wyches mounted in a Raider
10 Warriors + splinter cannon and blaster mounted in a Raider
5 Trueborn 3 blasters mounted in a Venom
5 Scourge 3 haywire blasters
Talos

The Map

The map 3 tier building to the bottom center, two tiered building center left, hill in the center right, Red circles are objective markers, two tiered ruins in each of the corners.
Spoiler:

Deployment
Purple are Dark Eldar, Grey are Grey Knight’s.
I won the roll to deploy first: Razorback full of Strike squad in cover with Techmarine hugging the wall, Terminators and Brother Captain in reserves. In the top of the tower are the Purgitation squad with the Interceptors behind the building.
Opponent deploys: Everything is in cover, can see the back side of the Venom and that’s about it Scourges are sitting on his objective at this point
Spoiler:

First turn: Me
Interceptors move from behind building to behind hill. Interceptors are too far away to shoot anything, just noticed that the I included both my moves and my opponents moves in this one, bugger
Spoiler:

First turn: Opponent
Raiders move out one behind the other and shoot at Purgitation squad in the tower, Talos moves out shoots at Purgators all models die at this point, The venom moves very far right and can see and shoots at Interceptors and kills two, Scourges move south shoot at Razorback and immobilize Razorback
Spoiler:

Second turn: Me
The Interceptors run back into building recently vacated by the Purgitation squad and hid in the bottom because it has no windows or doors. The Techmarine tries to repair the immobilized Razor back but he fails. The Razorback then opens up on the Talos scoring a wound which bring it to two wounds. The 5 Terminators and the Brother Captain teleport in and they don’t scatter, they all shoot at Raider with Wyches and the Archon and only manage to destroy a weapon.
Spoiler:

Second turn: Opponent
The Archon and Wyches disembark and its raider moves far left of the field, The Scourges Jump back, The Talos floats back up and the Venom scoots back as well. Everything that can fire do so at the Terminators. The aftermath? they kill all bar two of them leaving the Psycannon and Brother Captain who is on 2 wounds. The Archon and Wyches then assault and kill the remaining Terminator and the Brother captain (he didn't get snow globed by the Archon which was nice)
Spoiler:

Third turn: Me
The Razorback fires again on the Talos and brings it down to one wound, the Techmarine attempts repair the immobilized Razorback and fails again.
Spoiler:

Third turn: Opponent
The Talos and Venom move south and shoot at Razorback scoring a hit and destroying the Heavy Bolters. Scourges move down again, and again shoot at Razorback but do nothing. The Warriors disembark their Raider and their Raider moves to Archon and Wyches who will embark the next turn.
Spoiler:

Fourth turn: Me
The Strike squad disembarks from the Razorback and move towards the objective marker. The Interceptors realizing that it would be pointless to teleport over to my opponent’s objective decide to hop over to my objective. The Techmarine manages to repair the Heavy Bolter! The shooting does quite well here, both the Interceptors and Strike Squads shoot at the weaponless Raider, and of them hits penetrates and rolls a four to become immobilized, but because it had boosted forward in the last turn it ended up wrecked and crashes to the ground (first kill for me - yay)
Spoiler:

Fourth turn: Opponent
The Venom moves south shoots at Strike squad, and kills two, the Talos moves south and shoots at Razorback it does nothing, The Scourges hop south next to objective, however they had to run to get there and do no firing but are within contesting range. The Raider with Wyches and Archon boost south and his Warriors move to his objective.
Spoiler:

Fifth turn: Me
The lone incinerator marine steps out of cover… arc’s up at the Scourges and Raider (gotta love pie plates) and he manages to kill all the Scourges and even manages to wreck the Raider. This left the Wyches and Archon pinned for his next turn! The Techmarine attempts repair the immobilized vehicle and succeeds! The Razorback again fires on the Talos, but again does nothing. The three remaining Interceptors fire at the venom, but do nothing.
Spoiler:

Fifth turn: Opponent

The Venom flies in behind the Razorback and deploys the Trueborn who both fire into the Interceptors, this was followed up by an assault by the Trueborn into the Interceptors after combat only one Interceptor was left. The Talos charges the Razorback but because it didn’t move it gets hit hard, I think it got 6 penetrating hits, needless to say the Razorback explodes, what’s the best part? Its blast is three inches, it hits the Techmarine, the Interceptor and the five Trueborn and just covers the Venom. The result you may ask? All make saves except for the five Trueborn… their squad gets wiped out! After my laughter subsides the Talos consolidates closer to the Objective. Because of pinning the Archon and Wyches cannot move nor do anything.
Spoiler:

Sixth turn: Me
The incinerator marine moves sideways and the remaining members of the Strike squad filter out in a line making sure to still be 3 inches from the objective. Mr Incinerator opens up and kills all but the Succubus and Archon! The other two GKs storm bolter fire kill the succubus. It was at this point I had a choice to make, do I take the charge from the Archon and have him pull my guys off the objective or do I charge the Archon? Either way I’m screwed right? Better to charge than be charged I say. The boys head on in, A flurry of dice turns out they do no damage and they lose combat. This leads them to get melted by the Archon and they all die. The lone Interceptor charges the Venom, he doesn’t do anything. The Techmarine charges Talos Hoping to get one wound and slay the beast… he hits nothing and then promptly gets melted by the Talos who consolidates closer to the objective.
Spoiler:

Sixth turn: Opponent
The Venom breaks combat and moves away from Interceptor spins 180 degrees and fires on him and finally takes him out, I got tabled.
Spoiler:

Final map shot
Spoiler:

So, I learnt a lot in this battle, Dark elder have better range than I do, pain tokens hurt, don’t deep strike terminators with no support and incinerators rule!

It sounds like a hard fought battle, and DE are tough no matter what you play.

If there was one piece of advice that I could give you, in any battle under 1000pts, you've GOT to have numbers, atleast from what I've read. I'm hoping to get some experience playing this weekend or next week, but it's generally a good rule to balance the value of strength and the value of numbers.

Like your diagram btw. Really nice way to show off the battle report!

MS paint rules! Your battle rep reminds me of the really old school space marine (now called epic) battle reports they used to do. Anything you would definitely bring or not bring next time you fight the dark eldar?

@Mark - Yeah, it was. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the best general in the world and not knowing what the other army can do really didn't help either ( I knew they would tickle, just not that much)

@Ice - Cheers man, Epic battles, the ones where you have 5 marines on an oblong base and tanks the size of a phone's SIM card? if so I used to play that back in 1989 before I started 40k. What would I have done differently?

1) Rolled better
2) Not put the Purgitation squad in the bell tower (I put them there because I didn't know DE had better range than me)
3) Bulked out the squads more, small groups of 5 leads to more pain tokens when they get wiped out
4) Not DS the Terminators without backup or a ward staff - they weathered a massive amount of fire power but still didnt do anything worthy
5) Rolled better
6) Brought something that could attack first, however I'm not sure if marines have anything that could do that anyway
7) Not taken Interceptors, the jump is entirely situational and they didn't really preform that well.
8) Rolled better

The Interceptors work most effectively either entering late in game, or using a GM to give them scout, then using their 32'' shunt to get within 18'' of enemy units, then wailing on them with psycannons, then into assault. Cheap, but it is legal and works!

But yeah, in under 1000pt games, I'd never run them, unless you have everything streamlined.

Sounds good, great batrep. I'm playing 1500 Tuesday, I might try to do likewise! You mention Warding Staves - they seem to me a waste of time and effort. DE are vicious; my (initial) experience of GKs is they're now pretty much an assault army except v daemons, ironically. Because in the magic space future of giant death rays, the guy with the biggest pointy stick wins.

@Markillius - Yeah I can imagine a full 10 man squad scout moved in then gate jump 30 then open up with psysilencers/psycannons with psy ammunition. in fact that sounds damn right dirty to me.

@Rev. Reiko - Cheers man, it was about half way through the game that I realized I should be making notes of how this went so I could learn from it. At the beginning I didn't make many saves, hit's or wounds. but the terminators took about 30 - 40 shots so they did well enough to weather all of them.

@Graven - Thanks mate, let me know when you've posted up the BR and I'd be dead keen to see how you went. A warding staff would have helped when I was facing the lance weapons, they are AP2 I think and negate the Terminator base armor save so you have to take the invulnerable one which is 5+ iirc, where as with a warding staff that's still 2+ which means only on a 1 does the lance weapon kill the terminator, much easier to save men when you die on a 1 instead of living on a 5 or 6 (even just taking 1 would help there)

At least that's what I think was what they meant.

Update: Just got back from a LAN and haven't done any painting today, hopefully tomorrow/today (1:34am) will provide more results - oh for those who are interested stay tuned for a new fluff piece I should get that posted soon enough

That robe guy is beautiful Knightley.
Forcing Termies to make that many saves is the best way to kill them off (and i totally didnt realise there was that much fired their way ), but still seems like you had some poor luck.
One quick query, i thought the warding staves were only of use in CC?

@WM - Oooh so close, definitley a suit though.

@Rev. Reiko - Cheers for the comments, yeah his entire force opened up at them, 2 survived all shooting then died in CC, a warding staff was advised after the fact because its 2+ invun to all attacks (I took his word on that because I didn't know the rules)

@DSS - Thanks mate, I'm glad you like it, I took a chance on how it would look and I was pleasantly surprised, only took 4 coats as well. There's still plenty I need to repaint who have robes so yeah, definitley could have a robed only squad Your guess is close, its got dakka, but its not green.

@Graven - Well, I'll be taking ideas from your blog (like the Techmarine Dread for example) so it's all good

Update: I got some more time to work on the next WIP. Managed to get a coat of red on one of the weapon housing's complete with first stage edge highlights, and a first coat on the other. Managed to knock out all the gold on this part as well. and some first coats on some of the armor plates.

Seeing as there was a lot of interest around the Paladin head - here's a WIP of the pilots head.

Thanks for tuning in.

Page 10... I actually never thought I would get to double digits!

@Stoned - The black and gold was painted on, I started off just wanting to do a thin black line around the edges of the robes, however due to a paint brush failure once section went a bit fat. I attempted to fix it up by making the rest a little bit thicker, but further up the robe it happened again, so the thickness you see now is 3 lines basically. I had to fill it in and gold seemed like the logical choice

@Elbroke - Cheers dude, are you sure you'll be able to catch me now? even with a box set its *edit 30 posts* per page you know.

Update: Not much to show, only got about 30 Min's painting before other duties took over. However I did manage to get the first part of another fluff piece done

Spoiler:

“So how are you not dead?” Koali was snapped out of his reverie by a voice nearby. “Say again?” Koali uttered, his voice was deep and mechanical, it echoed in the hollow chamber where he was resting. “How is it that you're not dead? The amount of injuries you’ve had surely…” The voice belonged to one of the imperial guardsmen that had come aboard the Cruiser ‘Intolerance’ when their attack had failed and they had to be saved. “Quite the insolent one aren’t you?” Koali paused just long enough for the soldier to shift awkwardly “Is that any way to address a Techmarine of our most honorable Emperor?” The soldier looked up at the towering form of Koali and sneered “Oh wise and most venerable Techmarine of the honorable emperor, how is it you’re not dead?” Koali reach forward to grab the wretch and teach him some manners however the soldier ducked back quickly and moved behind one of the chambers support pillars.

“Look here you insignificant bag of flesh, I’ve lived thrice your life time, fought in hundreds of wars and have sustained countless injuries to protect the empire you so carelessly insult!” Koali’s metallic voice now was loud enough to attract the attention of others in the chamber, they came over to investigate the commotion. Noticing the small gathering the soldier quickly changed his tune “Look, I was only interested because with so much bionics you surely should have died long ago, yet here you are in front of us! And I want to know what happened”

Realizing that he would not catch the soldier with doing some serious damage to the surrounding area; Koali sighed, the sound came echoed out of his vox box sounding like an angry growl as he strode back to the alcove he was previously in, he then turned to face the small crowd who were waiting. “So, you want to know how I got to where I am, closer to the Omnissiah? Well stay a while and listen and you will know what I know”

Koali cleared his throat, “As you may or may not know the Grey Knight Brother Captain Stern, had combined the remnants of all loyal forces into a single army and ordered that all armor be painted grey to differentiate us from the chaos supporters who had turned during the beginning of our war.” What you don't know is that our early battles were small scale, a hit and run here, a surprise attack there, only a few units were ever engaged and it was just using bolters and other smaller caliber weapons. However it was noticeably escalating, I was moving more into a direct support role on the battlefield rather than an after battle support fixing broken armor and weapons. It was when we started to use the larger support weapons and tanks that Stern knew something had been testing us, learning our tactics, finding our weaknesses.

I’ve survived due to my bionics, the first; my arm was grafted to me after an ambush while we were moving towards the capital palace. The attack was all a blur but I do remember this, the cultists moved quickly. They came at us from the sides with chainswords and laspistols, our amour withstood the low powered laspistols, but when they got in close the chainswords were just getting through, they kept on coming. I was pulled to the ground by four of them and while I was strangling the life out of one of them the other three leapt on my arm and started to saw, by the time we had cleared the ambush five of our marines were dead and over half of us were greatly wounded. I created my own arm and it’s served me well.

To be Cont.. once I've written it of course.

Yum... Honestly the level of precision you put in is quite extraordinary. To do the detail work on the robes, did you freehand or pen?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2011/06/16 21:39:57

Post by: Knightley

Cheers Graven. The only time I use a Micron pen is when it's scripture time on purity seals and naming placards. the rest is done with a find detail brush (which reminds me I need to ask a mate where he got this 00 brush I use... its a beast but is slowly warping)

So in short, free hand on the robes

Hahah, the planetary reader has a 'bug'

I've had the technicians troubleshoot and they believe that have it fixed

Update:

Did a bit on the legs today still need to do a whole lot more however.

DK legs WIP 1

DK legs WIP 2

I painted these up in the event I might use them on the back of the DK. Thoughts? or will it be too much?

I always like the Ravenwing stuff on anything! Its a very nice sprue for cool bits. Would have to see the whole model first before deciding though..

Cheers Vitruvian, I know what you mean about seeing what it will look like first, probably why I haven't glued them on to the body yet.

Update: Took a small break on the legs to get started on another tac marine. He's got a devastator head and bionic arms. Marines are much quicker to paint than a DK...

I've submitted my Paladin Terminator to my LFGS's Facebook model painting competition (model had to be painted this month) and whoever gets the most votes wins (not sure what you win, probably nothing except bragging right's)

So I would be deeply grateful if anyone reading this could vote for my model:

You will have to like their page first

Makes me realize that I'm just not super productive haha.

Glad to see things coming along though. Can't WAIT to see the dreaknight completely assembled.
