Hi everyone, recently i've been informed that 100+ pages of Nerdness is getting to be quite a bit! and because of the weight of recent projects I've done a certain friend of mine has helped by collating my blog into links for those who wish to find previous models or things i've done, I appreciate the help and actually find the journey from when I started quite inspiring. You can now see my first Marines Exemplar with crappy highlights all the way to my attemts at conversion with the brutal Hel-Sak of Slaanesh

while my thanks goes to Whalemusic360 for doing the hard yards and actually going through everything, it's Whaley and all of you who've supported me and encouraged me to try new things and not give up that I want to thank sincerely, I do this not for any applause or any status but because I truly enjoy painting these mini's and i've never lost sight of what I said at the very start " I want to paint good looking mini's that use techniques anyone can use" and that's what I try and still try to do, if I can give someone inspiration or courage to have a go at something then i'm a happy Nerd

Really liking the simple black with white highlights, this should look quite imposing as the force nears its full size.

Nicely done, please keep it up

Looking good so far. Please tell me more about this "'zenithal' style highlight". Is it just a quick spray directly downward? then do you do your wash then highlight or highlight then wash?

Well, it's update time! today I put aside a couple of hours and worked on the eye lenses of my marines and terminators, at first I re-read some online articles to see if I could glean an easier way to do them, and decided that the way I do them is already pretty simple.
starting off I used a size '0' brush and painted every one of the 18 helmeted marines with blood red, by the time i'd finished them all I started on the next lighter color, at first I was mixing golden yellow into blood red to make my shade but decided rather early on that it turned out the color I was making was blazing orange! soooo saving more time I started using blazing orange slightly watered down to highlight towards the front of the lenses, to do this I used a 10/0 brush before a final shade with quite watered down pure golden yellow at the front and bottom of the lenses, lastly to finish them off a small dot of skull white in the corners, I know this is the way it's seen done all over the web but it is easy and does look good, when I had done all my lenses i just re checked them and tidied up any edges with chaos black.
[/img]http://s1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff505/nerdfest09/?action=view&current=BLOGPICS003.jpg" target="_blank">
[/img]http://s1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff505/nerdfest09/?action=view&current=BLOGPICS005-1.jpg" target="_blank">
[/img]http://s1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff505/nerdfest09/?action=view&current=BLOGPICS002.jpg" target="_blank">

Next I decided to have another look at the free airbrush I got the other day, I really like it so far, very easy to use and clean and is perfect for the simple things I intend to do with it, eventually I will probably try detailing and base coating armies and tanks but until I get some more skills with it I shall just be shading and laying down some color.
[img]http://s1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff505/nerdfest09/?action=view&current=BLOGPICS006.jpg" target="_blank">

Now i've lined them all up and had a look at the group together and i'm pleased to say that as a whole they are starting to come together, the lenses give them some character and a little 'pop' for an otherwise basic scheme, not bad for two hours work, I also managed to undercoat the purity seals deneb stone and blood red to get them ready for when I work on them next, I apologise for the less than crisp photographs but hopefully they are good enough to show what i've done and keep you checking back in?

More! I may just oblige! next step will be purity seals and the 'scrollwork' and skulls on the armor, I usually use a grey or black tone on them but I am going to try and do a warmer bone color this time, i think it will suit the black armor and red arms they will have, hopefully i'll have them done tomorrow for more pics! I like planning my sessions of painting so i don't get all bogged down with finishing the entire thing and I can focus on detailing certain parts, although looking at the terminators eyes I have tidied them up more since this morning.

Love these! Great way to do Black without doing the hard-edge highlight that can look very off.

Nerdfest09's Blog now with terain building shenanigans and a Mino Command. @ 2011/04/01 08:52:04

Post by: nerdfest09

Thanks em_en_oh_pee, I know what you mean about the hard edge highlights, sometimes they can be just a bit too harsh if not done correctly, I will still add small highlights to the armor but only sparingly, I don't want to go crazy with them and I don't want to complicate them with heaps of steps, I think they look o.k so far for what will be essentially good table top quality, lets hope they still look kinda impressive! :-)

Nerdfest09's Blog now with terain building shenanigans and a Mino Command. @ 2011/04/01 08:57:44

Post by: em_en_oh_pee

Well, I think they are better than tabletop. The stuff you painted is really nice! Don't sell yourself short. The hard-edge highlighting is a pain and I think you got that black armor spot on.

Keep on it! I am excited to see more!

Small update, no photo's yet though, i've started working on the purity seals and scrolls and skulls on the armor, the skulls and scrolls have been coated with watered down dheneb stone and the purity seals have had the parchment parts based in dheneb stone and washed with flesh wash while the wax has been done blood red and washed with the flesh wash as well, and i've just started layering dheneb stone back over the parchment.
hopefuly i'll finish them thursday or friday and post up some pics for you! :-)

Now, Everybody loves a little head, right?.....and that's just what i've been working on! I loved the look of the screaming face of captain Korvydea and had to have one in my army, i chose to put him in Terminator armor as the face will suit the twin lightning claws well, screaming into the midst of battle his powerfully charged blades cutting down foe after foe, the ichor smoking and steaming as he eviscerates fouls spawn and traitor alike! hmmm nice right? well, I thought so.

Starting off I didn't realise how small, fiddly, and difficult this was going to be to paint! I've never had to paint individual teeth before! but I took a deep breath sucked it up and started painting, first laying down a chaos black undercoat followed by a thinned layer of tallarn flesh and a wash of ogryn flesh when that dried, next up it was another wash, this time with an old GW flesh wash just in the centre of his face where the creases are strongest, once this dried I started layering up the highlights with tallarn flesh and adding bleached bone to the mix in progressively lighter shades until I was happy with the results, looking him over I then decided to darken i around his eyes (or eye) and give him a shaved head, this I did by adding some fortress grey to tallarn flesh and painting it on the hairline, then I added a little bit of Codex grey to darken up some parts until I thought it looked shaved
[/img]http://s1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff505/nerdfest09/?action=view&current=blogpics070.jpg" target="_blank">

that was the first shot yesterday when i was working on him, i've got a bit more to do tomorrow but the fiddly close work was making my eyes go cross eyed! so I did some work on the lenses, pretty much following the same scheme as my helmet lenses, i was going to go with green to add some contrast but decided it may make them look like christmas trees! so i'll keep the palette limited as i'm trying to make them easy to do, heres a couple of shots of where i'm at with him now, still got some touch ups to do on the face but otherwise done.
[/img]http://s1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff505/nerdfest09/?action=view&current=064.jpg" target="_blank">
I think he looks quite mean!

what else did I do today?......oh yeah, I glued the shoulder pauldrons onto my arms that were all stuck onto the pin strip I made so they'd be easier to undercoat and airbrush the shading onto later, I never had a photo before but I took one yesterday before I stuck the pads on so I could show you what I meant (should have done it after but oh well)
[img]http://s1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff505/nerdfest09/?action=view&current=blogpics064.jpg" target="_blank">

Well that's about all for me at the moment, all I need to do is touch up the face tomorrow and any other marine parts I feel need it, then wait until I get some vinyl chapter badges for the arms and then undercoat with army painter spray, and I can't really do anything else until then, the bodies are all done and waiting, although there is one headless guy so looks like another bare head for him

Hope you like where i'm at with it, as usual any comments are really welcome and constructive critique as well, now i'll let you check out my work while I check out a big 'ol cup of black coffee and watch 'Machete' and 'R.E.D' should be fun movies!

catch you soon.

Oh my...... I am really in awe of this technique for black armour. These look amazing! I may have to barrow this idea for a Black Templars army if you wouldn't mind good sir. I always hated doing the hard edge black highlighting and this seems to make it more realistic and would allow for more battle damage and such (like the cover to Helreach). If I may ask (you can PM if you have the time) can you explain the steps you've taken for the armour? Again these look amazing and you've defintely just lit the fire under my butt to get my Black Templars back into production.

Well, I was going to wait, but I underestimated how inspirational doing my own blog would be and I jumped into my brushes again today and took a couple of shots to show you all and see what you think? any hints or direction you think I should take with him? I like the 'arches' on the sarcophagus, I was unsure at first what to do with it as I don't like anything too 'busy' with most of my stuff, but I think it looks just about right, only thing I am not really happy with is his helmet, I started painting this guy last year and put him away for ages only partially done and now I've gotten more patience and a few more tricks up my sleeve it's not as good as i can do, but I can't pull it apart to change either, so i'll work with what i've done and see how i go!

Thats some really great work your turning out there. I like your not affraid to try different techniques. I have an idea for a similar army myself.

I was going to go with a black undercoat, with a dry brush coat of Boltgun metal with a coat or 2 of Badab black, then pick out sum of the detail again with boltgun metal and a tiny bit of chainmail. But ur technique pretty much gets me to the end finish i was looking for. I know youve been asked a hundred times but could you private msg me a little info about ur technique. A copy and paste from other would suit me if you havent got the time fella lol

Once again, looking good mate. Looking forwards to seeing more of your work!!!

@Rex-nine, no problem dude, i'll pm you tomorrow night and let you know how i did it, the weathering is done by drybrushing boltgun metal over a black undercoat and then sponging on a liquid mask medium, once it's totally dry then I paint the figure as usual and then peel off the mask using a bit of blu tac or something similar, this leaves it all nice and 'chipped' then I add some more mithril silver to boltgun metal and add some scratches and highlights to the chipped bits, and hopefully it looks right, sometimes I go overboard with the mask and it looks a bit too much, it's also the way i painted my wolf guard terminators in my gallery, hope this helps you out?

Oscar the big guy!

Well excitement turns to frustration today! I got my couple of packages in the mail, and recieved my vinyl stickers from Zinge and my mechanical parts from Puppetswar, they were both really good and only had two resin parts break in transit, so not too bad but they did travel a long way to get here! the stuff from zinge is really good too, only frustrating thing I found was the chapter logo for my marines exemplar is very fiddly and won't pull off the sheet or stick down well on the pads :-( I tried heating them up and using a scalpel to place them on and then a dab of glue but no luck! :-( so I may need to come up with something else now? I was really hoping to use them as they look really good. maybe someone out there can make me some waterslide decals to use?

well since I won't be using them I can do stage two then, i'm about to use my can of Army painter dragon red to get my base colour on the arms, just waiting for the sun to come out......waiting.......waiting.....still waiting, I don't want to rush doing them incase the spray mucks up? i've never used it before and i've heard it's tricky to use, but as soon as I get it done I can start putting them together and doing my highlights with my airbrush that again i've never used before! lets hope it warms up here soon!

Since being dejected by the chapter logo I decided to work on my arms....4 sets of 25 at 20kg..... kidding!

I am including a pic of the logo on the pad I was working on, so you can see the actual item is good but the design and curvature make it hard to sit right, i'm thinking waterslide would be better now as I can use microsol and microset to help it out.

I used the army painter primer on some spare sprue before I did my marines arms, and it appeared to work quite well, although I did notice that while it covered well and didn't obscure any details it did go on slightly thicker than what I was accustomed to, if you weren't careful you could quite easily go too thick and ruin what you were priming, I think it works well and will use it again.

another first for today....airbrush! trial by error. primed the arms in dragon red and then mixed up a very dark mix of red and black and proceeded to lightly airbrush underneath the arms and around the rims of the pads, problem was without noticing I'd basically re painted the whole arm! so i added more black to get more shadow and had another easy go at it, this time they looked better but as you can see in the pics they look too subtle and nearly like just solid colour! grrrrr!

I'm not sure how to progress with them now, to keep the style and ease of painting which was my main goal for this army I feel I should maybe add a devlan mud wash in the recesses and see how a pure blood red highlight looks? and since I was an eager beaver and glued them on already I can't do more air work.

Now everyone's favorite nerdfest09 was starting to lose inspiration and focus! what ever to do!...oh yes, look at my other resin bits from puppetswar that'll fix it! and it did I picked them out and had them with my models to see how they worked with them, I was stoked at the imagery I obtained when I held up the bionic powersword arm on my assault squad captain, I could just imagine him screaming from the darkened heavens blade blazing in a furious arc towards numerous foes, his mind geared and thoughts unwavering towards utter destruction of his enemy..... yeah that'll do it

well that's it for today for me, i'm now off to have a shower and then relax and sit down and watch Harry Potter!
please as usual give me any feedback or suggestions, I hope you all like how it's going so far?

your pal, Nerdfest09

Here we go again! and this time i'm pumped! I started building my landraider as a break from the marines that i had had enough of for the time being and I am enjoying it immensely, I used my airbrush again and came across a few issues but i'm still happy with how it turned out considering it was only it's second time out of the box.

Well now first things first I undercoated the sprues chaos black and then clipped off the parts I needed and pushed the two hulls together, then I gave the outside of each one a good brush with boltgun metal then a stippling of mithril silver.

Next step was to just dab a little watered down blazing orange in parts over the hulls.

Now that was the quick bit, next thing I did was use a masking liquid, in this instance I used a Humbrol liquid mask and a small piece of fine steel wool and stippled it very gently over parts I felt would get some good chipping and wear and tear.

Whilst this was drying on the body of my raider, i thought i'd give some of the interior a quick paint, nothing too time consuming as it would be rarely seen but just a neat representation that would still hold up with the rest of the models in the army, it turned out well and I am actually happier than I thought i'd be with how it looks.

Once the mask had dried I busted out the can of Dragon red army painters colored primer! and I must say i like the product, it gave a nice color and good coverage without obscuring any details, you can see in the pic the 'bubbles' under the paint which are where the mask is and where the chipping will be when i pull it off.

Righto, now it was time to get out the dreaded airbrush for it's second time out, I still had some issues as i'm teaching myself how to run it, sometimes the paint came out too fast with too much pressure so i turned it down and it was better, then the paint came out a bit too 'speckly' not too bad and I did continue with it like that as the effect wasn't bad when you considered the whole model, i'll let you be the judges, but practice makes perfect right? next time I hope i'll get better again, I wasn't sure how to shade the raider so i went the safe route and just went on the lower half and a small burst across the top.

While the airbrush was scaring the bejeezus out of me when it turned itself back on when i wasn't ready! I decided when my heart stopped beating a mile a minute to forgive it and use it to paint the hold of the model, so using barley gray from Vallejo air paints I did....

I was really, really liking how it was working out for me so far, a few errors but nothing to disheartening at this stage, the break from my marines is a good choice I think and has kept the fire burning for this army project, it's always something I love to see on my shelf when you can put a nice tank with a squad of marines charging out into the battlefield, mind you on my shelf the battlefield consists of 40k novels and a few transformers toys! not exactly threatening!.....although if Bumblebee gets riled up!......
moment of truth now, and it's time to peel off the mask, for this task I used a small blob of Blu tac on the end of a brush and brushed it over erasing the mask from under the paint, as it peels away I'm loving the look so far, and tomorrow once I get back into it I shall hopefully add some highlights with a normal brush but I feel the actual chipping and weathering is fine without going crazy and trying to touch it up more.

Nice I think so far, now I put the rest of the model together and got a feel for where to go next with it, the more i look at it the more i am happy with my choice of chapter, I love the splash of red throughout with the nice black armor, I think they are a striking looking army and i can't wait to keep moving on with them hopefully producing some models that you all like out there! I took one pic of the Raider together before I gave it up for the day and watched Predators with a mate of mine!

Well that's it unfortunately for me today, I hope you can give me some honest feedback and i'll get working on it more tomorrow and hopefully be able to post pics up soon

Looking good nerdfest. On the speckles you get from your airbrush, it's most likely b/c you're either not watering down the paint enough or the psi isn't high enough or perhaps both. The masking looks like it came out great. Looking forward to seeing more progress

Thanks guys for the compliments! I did some more basic work on it this morning but nothing to post yet hopefully next week I should have it finished and more pics!

@ Eggroll, thanks for the advice, I thought originally I had too much psi, so I dropped it down, maybe I should have gone higher, and if I remember correctly when i did the barley grey inside I added more thinners and it went on smoother, so now i've got a good start for next time, higher psi and plenty of thinners! until i get a bit more confident with it I may just use it to do my tanks and just ink and highlight the marines, but we'll see how I go? I may get inspired to just do it anyway! :-)

@ Pyriel, sorry me old friend but as yet nothing has graced my doorstep from you :-( be assured as soon as it does the pics will be up and i'll be bustin' out that rhino quick smart! :-)

until next we meet.....may the emperor protect!

Imagine this, a sleepy Nerdfest09 in his underwear woken by a knock on the front door! bleary eyed and barefoot he stumbles his way to answer the knock, grumbling as he turns the knob only to find.... a smiling young lady holding a package from Chapterhouse! bashfully apologizing about his underwear he quickly takes the offered package and smiling shuts the door behind him, exulting cries of joy he tears open the box to find.....
Pre heresy drop pod doors!

Mk1 Rhino kit

Combi bolters

The most awesome Rhino tactical skull doors!

Pre heresy jump packs

An assortment of great heads for some fantastic looking conversions!

A great storm shield and Exorcist shoulder pad for a librarian conversion

And some cool as, Inqusition doors for a rhino I think.

WOW, i'm super happy with that lot of stuff for my army, looks like i'm going to be a very busy boy/man in the next few weeks! all the cast pieces were excellent with minimal flashing and everything appeared to be very straight with no major warping, all in all i'd have to say that this package from Chapterhouse is some of the best quality i've seen, it's funny how the larger companies can send me stuff all bent and crappy but the smaller people who i've ordered from always send good stuff! good on you independent companies!

Ooh one last thing before I sign off to go and model some more, I managed to do some work on the frag assault launchers for the front of the landraider, still a bit more to go but I like them!

Well that's it from me today, I only got the package an hour ago but I was so excited I just had to tell you all about it! now I can go and enjoy Pyriels package at my leisure and work on that rhino first!

Until next time......Nerdfest09

How exactly do you go about removing it with blue tac? You said you put it on the end of your brush, I assume the non-brush end of it? Do you just push/roll it over the dried masking liquid and it comes off with the paint?

Nerdfest09's Blog now with terain building shenanigans and a Mino Command. @ 2011/05/09 16:44:40

Post by: nerdfest09

Yep, that's right the non brush end or if you've got a decent blob just rub it over like an eraser, push it onto the model with a bit of pressure and it'll lift off, you shouldn't ruin the paintjob either it's pretty good stuff to use.

Land Raider is looking good there mate, the weathering and airbrushing are coming together nicely. There's one of two really large patches of weathering I'd be tempted to add a light wash of brown or black to the centre of but the technique works a treat from the look of your mini so far.

That chapter symbol on the shoulder pad looks pretty spesh too, love to see an update on how that's panning out.

I'm assuming from the magnets that the combi-weapons will be magnetised and interchangeable?

Nerdfest09's Blog now with terain building shenanigans and a Mino Command. @ 2011/05/10 14:58:47

Post by: nerdfest09

Thanks for your feedback SCC always appreciated from an artist such as yourself, I'll re visit those larger chipped patches and add a wash to dull it down a bit and see how it looks then, i'm hoping to finish it this friday.

Sadly I can't use the chapter symbols :-( they just won't confirm and are very fiddly to get off the paper which is a shame as they are done very well, but maybe i can use one or two on my vehicles flat areas? we'll play it by ear I think :-)

and yep, magnetised combi weapons a go go!

Quick and not very exciting update but at least there's a pic or two
Spent the rainy day we had today inside and painting, I managed to nearly finish my landaraider, I painted 18 lenses inc the marine's helmet lenses, quite tedious work if you don't have good enough lighting! glued the sponsons on and all I need to do now is weather the treads, drill out my barrels when my pin vice arrives, highlight the marine and paint the extra bits like the eagles on the door and front hatch....

this one was when I masked it up and then discovered the best thing in the world the airbrush is good for! laying on washes! it makes it so much easier the coat is even, no brush strokes and you can concentrate wash int the parts you need darker! I love it!
And lastly but by no means least, the Nerd lair where the magic happens! it's only temporary mind you until i can buy another house and build a dungeon so my gf won't want to turn it into a gym or decorate it!

soon i'll be doing more so i'll be back shortly!

Hi again my fellow Dakkaites! I have finally come to the completion end of my landraider and also had a chance to highlight some of my marines! i'm quite happy with my progress and of course lament the age old camera + normal world = lack of details, but never mind, once the lot i've got get finished I'll be taking them to my cousin's place who's a proper photographer where she'll make them look great!

so on with some photo's! first up, landraider:

I really didn't enjoy painting the 'headlights' on the tank, I found them to be really difficult and nearly had a hissy fit and chucked it trying to get them to look right!
I am also waiting on the drill to do my weapons with so that has to wait a bit too!

But I like the marines my original intention of using the airbrush has been replaced with a coat of dragon red primer followed by a devlan mud wash and blood red highlights then a blazing orange/blood red highlight this still keeps them in my quick and easy method and tales a short amount of time to actually paint them!

Looking at the pics again I can now see I need to just touch up around the lenses with black again and neaten them up but then i'll be done! but that's where i'm at at the moment people, next is finishing the tac squad and bolters then it's back onto work with my Assault squad and terminators, any comments are always welcome, hopefully positive but constructive critisism is o.k too!

Sweet Nerdfest!
I can't wait to see all that stuff, for some unknown reason I love looking at piles and piles of boxes all ready for assembly/painting. It looks so awesome . looking forward to seeing those finished marines too!

I haven't been up to too much recenlty, I did some work on some of my veterans heads for the command squad, check the blog out! I just need to wait for the rest of the bits to arrive before I can do some more serious work. I'm extremely excited - 1-2 weeks until major command squad updates i'm guessing. But trust me, it'll be worth the wait. I'm going to do my best to make them as beautiful as possible . Until then though, i'll probably work on some troops and those sergeants, maybe some terrain - I have a strongpoint that needs doing!

Until then,

I had to research methods and colours for it and ended up doing what you see here, I shall also be getting those two marines for you and your son together soon as well and i'll ship them on their way!
Friday is looking like a good day to finish my tac squad all bar the bases! so hopefully some more pics! I have only done the bolters with boltgun metal (appropriate) and a wash of black but i actually really like how they look! kind of basic and massed produced with an air of functionality to them, what do you guys think? will it be enough to still look good or will I lose cool points for not spending more time on them?

I don't do all that much extra work on my bolters either. They are standard munitions... I like to keep them that way. That being said, I usually do a bit of chainmail highlighting on them (drybrushed) just to make them pop a bit in relation to the figure.

Not a bad idea gits, i've got mithril silver so i'll drybrush a bit over and see how it comes up, i can't remember which one's a brighter silver though? mithril or chainmail? doesn't really matter I suppose in the long run though :-) I shall keep the bolters simple as, like you said, they're standard munitions but i'll most probably do something diferent for the captain/ librarian/ chaplain.

Mithril is the brightest. if you do the chainmail and decide it's still a little dull, you can do a *really dry* mithril brish over the chainmail. Don't overdo it though or you'll end up with glam-guns. Most unflattering for the emperor's finest.

Don't worry man, freehand is surprisingly easy, if you have a fine hand.
I tackle freehand when I do shoulder pads, and certain writings and insignias for miscellanious SM parts. One of the best peices of advice I can give is to hold your breath whilst freehanding, and keep your brush moist.

hope it helps,

Loving these. The black looks to be one of my favourites i've seen on my travels through the internets. I prefer less extreme highlights on black for some reason, but edge highlights on other colours i like.... i'm wierd like that =p

As for your decal problem, have you tried MicroSet and MicroSol? Would be a shame to waste those nice decals if there is a chance to save them. There is afew good tutorials on youtube on how to use them. Microsol really worked for me, as it softens up the decal, so it conforms alot better. Also if there is a reasonable border of the clear stuff around the decals, you could make afew small cuts around them (obviously, dont cut the actual image heh).

Anyway, loving the Marines. And the black. Subbed =)

Thanks again for your comments guys! much appreciated!

@ S'Jet thanks dude, glad you like my marines! I as you may have realised I'm not a fan of the hard edge highlight either, but I love the look of black marines and armour so i searched and found this way, some of them i do add a small highlight but usually with fortress grey so it blends nicely!
my decal problem wasn't as easy as microsol and set sadly as they were very well made custom vinyl stickers, they just didn't want to wrap properly so i'm now looking at other options, eg: someone to make me some waterslide decals so i can use the setting gear, or laser cut plastic logo's? we'll have to wait and see what eventuates with them?

more updates soon too!

Yes Mr Whale, my gs-fu is pitiful as well, although I may attempt a bit on my captain? yet I don't want to spend $16 for something i'm only using a teeny bit of! but the idea is sound, I may also look at that as an idea for chapter badges, just need to work out how....

@Perkustin: thanks for liking my marines, i'm not sure if you meant the black was too dark for your tastes? (damn that dark black to hell!)or the overall scheme was to 'dark' :-) but i'm going to work on some more vehicles soon, I have 2 rhino's and 2 landspeeders to do now! which i'm looking forward to doing!

Morning everyone! or afternoon whatever the case may be! I had an exciting morning today, a day off work and purely organised to paint up some more of my Marines Exemplar army! and I got a bit done too, I managed to finish my tac squad to 99% I may need to re visit my multi melta guy but I'll see what everyone thinks first before I do anything, I also found nestled in the back of my partners work car a case of energy drinks left over from a promotion! score for me! maybe that's why i painted so fast today?

Well, I suppose you aren't checking this to hear about my day? so on with the updates

firstly we'll start with my veteran sergeant, i've named him veteran sergeant brother Dalton, after a character in a movie my friends and I love called 'Roadhouse' he's sporting this season's latest trend in powerfists, an open design right from the catwalks of Puppetswar in poland...

Next off the rank is a couple of shots of the tactical squad led by veteran sergeant Dalton, scanning the battlefield searching for enemies....

I must admit I do like how they all look in those last shots, the lighting was alright and the models look pretty damn cool in that chapter scheme, i'm still glad i chose them and can't wait to do more of them, my army idea has expanded rapidly now I see my progress, I ordered more models the other day, so now when it's finished it'll be quite large!

Next up I started doing some more work on my Terminators as well, they're not finished yet but the first shot here is just the base colours laid down, bleached bone and mithril silver over the army painters dragon red primer...

Next up i just washed the armour and bleached bone in Devlan mud and the metal parts in badab black...

and a quick shot of them together, just wanted to see them alongside my other mini's and make sure they looked alright before I take them and do the highlighting and shading tomorrow on them all...

And lastly but certainly not least, it's Mr Multimelta! he likes Kenny rogers and eating vegetarian pizza.... o.k maybe not, but he does enjoy disposing of the enemies of the imperium with his trusty Multimelta, nothing says 'this planet does not belong to you' like turning their flesh and bones into molten slag!
I'm not too sure he looks right though, I did try and get the barrels to appear like glowing metal using a red hot turbo manifold as reference? my original idea was to use the airbrush but it played up on me and I wanted to finish him so I brushed it on!

Let me know how you think it's all going? i'm pretty happy with it, I know there are the odd mold line but I'm not too fussed, I tried to get most of the bad ones, but in the end this army is about getting them painted quickly and looking good so I can enjoy them...and I do!

Maybe if I drink this.....

I'll have everything painted in an hour?

May the Emperor protect!

The open power fist looks awesome and the painting as well. Well done with the laurels on the helm. Is Dalton the guy in the movie that goes around round house kicking everyone? I've never seen the movie roadhouse but there was an episode of Family Guy where Peters goes around kicking everyone and saying "road house" afterwards so I figure it's from that movie reference.

Anyway, back on topic...or not...that's a lot of energy drinks!

As usual, thanks so much for your comments guys! I appreciate all of them!

@Gitsplitta: thanks Gits, progress is coming along faster now as i get more inspired the more i do! doing more today actually!

@Lipsdapips: Awesome! I love doing an update as well! Now off you go and paint, paint, paint!

@Eggroll: Cheers dude, first time laurel-er didn't come out too bad! and the different power fist is nice isn't it! good quality as well, i like getting and using bits from around the world, I've got a bit of stuff to use for other parts in the army and yes Dalton is the roundhouse kicker, in reference to that episode of Family Guy! how funny was that my friends from training (who also work with me) jump out from darkened corners and we 'roadhouse' each other, it's funny until we actually connect!

I better log off and go and finish those terminators so i can update again soon! maybe tonight? maybe tomorrow? but definitely soon!

Post by: nerdfest09

Hi everyone, Just got a package in the mail today! 2x landspeeders, 1x dreadnought, 1x Tac squad, 1x Rhino, and some parts to convert a Librarian and Terminator chaplain! so I'm excited and can't wait for days off to get going with it all! i'm taking my two rhino's to work tonight to clip off and part assemble if i get a chance, and i've washed my resin parts from chapterhouse studios to use on the rhino's, only bad news is my airbrush got a blockage and I can't use it until sunday :-( I gave it to the guy who gave it to me to fix! :-) so then i'll get heaps done.

So the plan of attack for me now is as follows, paint my 2 Rhino's using resin parts, finish my Terminators whilst fiddling with said Rhino's then onto my Assault squad, once they're done I don't think i'll be able to help myself and i'll be painting my 2 Landspeeders and then my Dev squad and Dreadnought, and somewhere in amogst that I need to paint my bases i got from Back2base-ix! so I'm going to be very busy for a while, and I need it done by the start of July for my first game in ages! so wish the Marines Exemplar luck in battle!

@Hangfire: how are you dude? my faces eh! I guess you're referring to the ones on my wolf guard terminators in my gallery? it's never a hard and fast recipe but the basics are tallarn flesh basecoat then ogryn flesh wash, once it dries I mix tallarn and bleached bone together and just continue to highlight up adding more bleached bone, sometimes I use elf flesh or dwarf flesh depending on the shade I need but it's not very complex, I just make sure i water down my paint and do multiple coats as you don't want to flood the area and lose the details, if you do something too light just mix in the base colour and touch it up, when I next do a face I'll take some step by step shots and pop them up if you like? lets hope it turns out well and isn't one of my dud faces! :-)

cheers everyone talk soon!

I'm a little hesistant about the red. The black looks superb and has all the right tones but the larger areas of red (Terminator shoulders for example) seem...less smooth?

Looks fine on all the Marines, just the Terminators that seem to be a bit patchy...

@ Darkstarsabre, that is only the basecoats and a wash on the terminators so far, they're work in progress at the moment so I should have finished pics up on friday? hopefully they'll look much better then :-) I was just trying to do a sort of step by step on them, but I suppose I should have been more patient and waited until i had them all done eh!

Looks like you've been busy since I last checked this thread out Again I gotta say I love the colors. I love it so much I may use it for two projects I have in the works, I dropped the Templars and have started a True-Scale Sons of Malice side project and then I'm doing an "army on a budget" of Skryars Dark Wolves (it could change as the fickle whims of Tzeentch are concerned)but this technique will be perfect for both and again thank you for answering my inquiries, I'll make sure to give you a heads up when I get some guys done

Awesome Mr. Malevolent! looking forward to seeing some work from your brush again! it's always good stuff:-) glad I could give you some ideas for next projects, i'm going to vote for the wolves! they'd be great to do, which ones are the sons of malice again? (or I could just google them!)
and yep, i've been busy painting, it's great having this thread i've managed to complete heaps since i started it, more than i've ever done in the same time frame before! everyone has been really positive about them which is nice, i've nearly finished the terminators, I did have a bit of a hiccup and they were delayed a while and i've also got my two rhino's well and truly on the way to being finished, as well as my librarian and chaplain parts for conversions! I may post tomorrow with some updates?

keep painting guys!

I'm back again! just a short update for you all, i've done some work on my rhino's and just waiting for the airbrush to come back to finish them but I thought i'd show you how the side doors look on! photo's look a bit dodge but it's just the liquid mask under the base coat!

I also got working on my Librarian, and i suppose you could sarcastically call me captain conversion! I used, wait for it..... yep, grey knights legs and rear torso and grey knight terminator head! I know it's not original but hey, it looks good!

Oh yeah, I finished three of my Terminators as well! i'm pretty happy with them too, look a bit better in person but these shots aren't bad! they're going to look like an imposing squad bursting out of a landraider or deep striking into the thick of battle against some monstrous creatures!

That's all at the moment, i'm working on the thunder hammer termies at the moment, they will be finished tomorrow.

I wanted to ask for your opinions on painting my captain, I'll try and describe my dilemma as best I can although I do tend to get a bit tangled and wordy when I type fast
I have gotten a sang guard torso and i'm going to file down a small skull and try and to emulate the chapter badge on his chest using it and some greenstuff or card, and i've got the chapterhouse roman style helmet and removed the crest from it and added the iron halo helmet thing from the blood angels helmet, again to represent the chapter badge, so i've got the basic armour and style of how he will look worked out but I don't know how to paint him? should I paint him as my other troops? but if I do, I'll lose the details on the armour and cool helmet i'm using, i'd like to paint the helmet red as i'm comfortable painting it but will he just look like a sergeant? or maybe the entire torso and helmet but leave the arms black as something different? any suggestions or pics are welcome, I'd like to stay away from metallic but if they're the best choice then i'll use them!

I hope you've enjoyed tuning in for this small update, I shall endure cramping fingers to bring you all the best from the planet of necris soon!...like maybe tomorrow

@Arrathon: thanks for the comments! my black recipe is damn easy dude, you should give it a try? and let me know how you go with the weathering? and those doors sadly were given to me by a friend who had them sculpted but felt they weren't up to his usual standards! but I can see if he's got any others around?

Awww, you all warm the cockle of my heart with your kind words! seriously. it now feels like i'm chatting with old friends! some older than others.....

@Scc: thanks, i'm glad you like the termies, I do too, as for basing i've got a shed load of back2base-ix urban ruins to paint up, probably just with a barley grey base and a wash of black, nothing too spectacular, and you are so right, those GK bits are made for making librarians! especially those legs with flowing tabbard, i'm going to go old school fluff and have the tabbard yellow with his rank on it. Did you get the book I sent you yet? I posted it last monday? :-)

@jirc: hey mate, yep i'm over the ditch! if you are ever in tasmania feel free to look me up and come round for a look see and maybe a game with my mates! glad you like the way I weather, I like it to be easy and quick! if you have any questions just ask and i'm happy to help out best I can! I did have pics of the thunder hammer guys but I'm not happy with the photo's it makes them look pretty ordinary so i'm now working on my assault marines and the combat squad attatched to my dev squad! :-) oh and my 2 rhino's....and my dev squad.....and my 2 landspeeders....and another tac squad.....and another dreadnought! yeah i got a bit to do, so you'll have plenty of updates to see!

G'day everyone! I did manage to get some work done on my models today! i've made good progress please keep in mind that this update they are all still w.i.p, I really wanted to get my rhino's nearly done if not finished, and I should have them done tomorrow for my friday update
Firstly I gave them a coat of barley grey with the airbrush, it's a nice colour for interiors as it looks nice and industrial yet you can use it on other things as well!

Then while they were drying I managed to do the 'ol Nerdfest09 quick 5 minute interior

Then I started to assemble them and see how they were taking shape....nicely I thought?

After the glue had dried I assembled them proper and masked off the sides with tape, did the boltgun overbrush and dabbed on the liquid mask the same as I did with my Landraider, I feel I may have gone a little overboard with the mask on these two, but it's done now and i'm sure I can adjust anything i'm unsure of!

All done I re sprayed the chaos black over them and took off the tape, they look pretty good so far, I started on the Chapterhouse studio's side hatches but i'm not sure if I should just paint the skulls bone and leave the arrow red? or paint the arrow black to contrast with the sides of the transport? opinions will be apreciated in this!

I also started on the top hatch as well, it's only got a mechrite red base coat and bleached bone skulls that have been washed with devlan mud then overbrushed bleached bone again before I start to highlight them up.

Now for the Assault squad! I'm really enjoying these guys this time, I like the way they are looking even though they each have a heap more work to be done on the each, but at least the direction i'm taking appears to be a good one, first up is the test fit of the first guy then I have a couple of group shots showing the heights of them and roughly how they will look as a squad

Bases! yep I finally made some progress on these bad boys as well! all I did was undercoat black and airbrush a light coat of the barley grey I used in the interiors, then washed with badab black from the airbrush and dry brushed fortress grey over once it dried! the first shot is just after the barley grey then the othe ones are the was and finished product.

And finally for the day i started laying down the base colour on my librarian, it's not much but I may be updating as well tomorrow with more progress! please let me know what you think of my project as usual at the pace i'm going I should have enough completed to game in July which is my goal!

Well, there we go! all done for today! I know i'm updating a day early but I thought i'd post up now and maybe again tomorrow night i'm keen to see what reactions I get from this lot first

May the Emperor protect!

Nerdfest09

Hmmm I just previewed my post and the some of the pics didn't appear the correct size or they are sideways! I want to appologise if it makes the post hard to follow! i re did some and they stayed the same...not sure what the go is there! i'll have another crack when i get on tomorrow

Looking really good man, the weathering on the rhinos looks great, definitely not overboard, makes them look well used like all rhinos should, as they are the work horse of tanks!
Love the look of the librarian, the GKs stuff works really well, good choice! I wish I could stick with a project like you, my space wolves are coming along verrry slowwlyyy.......

Keep the posts coming, love to have a nosy when ever I'm on Dakka , helps motivate me!!

Cheers, James

@jirc: Thanks James, that's kinda how i thought too, as the most commonly used transport seeing numerous firefights and getting those angels of death to where they need to be quickly, then they're going to be a bit roughed up I like how the Librarian is coming out, even though it's only the beginning of him, the knights stuff doesn't look out of place or stand out too much as purely GK parts which is good
I'll probably have more to post tomorrow? hopefully the pics will come out properly as well!, Keep up the wolves dude, I have had 3 incarnations of the space wolves over the years and have a spot in my heart for them, but I think i'll slowly just keep painting up my wolf guard terminators and see where it leads!

@DarkStarSabre: Hmmmph! it may even work with a global campaign? the loyalists and renegades of dakka playing along a storyline to a certain goal? maybe some clever fluff addled dakka-ite could work something out for us to play around the world and post up results? actually sounds like it could be fun

Hah. That sounds tempting when you consider the number of CSMs and SMs floating about with this sort of theme.

Even if my Extinction Angels appear in all of -two- official places (Codex CSM 3.5 and one of the Eye of Terror result WDs!)

Thanks Gits! my 5 min interior is just enough i feel to look good but not go too crazy! and I think the grey colour I used is a good choice, as the spartan interior of a battle tank or transport is really only practical, even for the space marines! strange how the pics have re sized correctly today? they look much better! I may do more but i'm feeling under the weather today so i may not be able to :-( i may have to sit on the couch eating choc chip cookies with warm milk and watching star wars!

i've assembled the marines for you and thing one! i'll hopefully have them finished and on the way in the next week or two! I hope you use them in battle well? well, they better do you well in battle more to the point! ;-)

I'm glad you like the progress! what do you think I should do with the tactical arrows on the sides of the rhino? leave them red and paint the skulls or paint the arrows black to contrast which was my original plan?

when's your next update so i can check it out? :-)

Generally, I'm a big fan of counter-changing... so I'd do the arrows black.

No rush on the guys, though I'm certainly looking forward to seeing them. Take your time, have fun... that's the whole point of trades after all! I'm sure they'll be great additions to our armies, and I know my inquisitional squads will get a good work out as they'll be my only tactical squads!

Next update was supposed to be tonight, but so far all I've been doing is screwing around on the internet!

*sigh* I miss the days of global campaigns. I would love to get involved in something like that, where a bunch of us somehow pull together battle results to make a story driven global campaign. There is nothing I love more then a really cool story driven campaign

By the way those assault marines are looking very nice, as well as those bases!

Thanks LDP and Mr Malevolent! as i always say and probably always will....it's great to hear from you guys! yep, i'm loving how the assault guys look at the moment, sorry I couldn'y do more today, i'm not feeling up to it :-( but I managed to just wash the arms of the assault squad with devlan mud and that's it! so it's slow progress!

A global campaign would be awesome wouldn't it! the last one i can recall was the fall of medusa v! way back in'06' i loved reading white dwarf just to see the progress and wicked bat rep pics and stories, it made for something very very cool! do you think if we come up with a story to follow first we could work out a campaign for those that would wish to join us? i'm keen if you are? do you know anyone well versed in fluff writing? i'm sure Darstarsabre would be into it as well, he's got enough army for 4 campaigns!

5 mins to do the rhino interior, that would take me 5 hours!

Good work Nerdy, glad to see you are making progress. Are you going to add some mud/dirt effects to the sides of the Rhino?

Heya Hangy! :-) thanks dude! seriously a quick airbrush with grey and paint the screens like i do my lenses just a bit rougher and she's done! really only took 5 mins! I can remember a couple of years back i spent 4 days painting and detailing my landraider interior, and then....glued the door shut accidentally!

No I don't think i'll dirty up the rhino's too much, I think maybe a little bit of concrete dust may look o.k as they're city fighting but probably not mud at this stage, I'll wait and see how they look when i get some blu tac and pull off all the liquid mask!

How's your Eldar coming along? did you decide on a colour for the weapons for them? i'm still wanting to see some more cool progress from you! your blending and colour choice for your army is fantastic and i just think it's going to look amazing when you're done!

Indeed. I would be tempted by this. We should all start pooling this together somewhere since I know we have so many CSM, SM and other players that could make a whole Maelstrom based campaign great.

And as far as army?

Heh. Extinction Angels alone you're looking at the entire 3rd Company and half the 1st Company, plus extra for a traitor Chapter.

I might have to start typing up their fluff at work.

Heh. Probably going to get a post up for it tonight - just need to sort out who is where and doing what with the background.

Mainly a complete list of the Badab War chapters (as I figure they get special mention for dirty renegades), a list of the 'Warden' chapters such as your Marines Exemplar and a more accurate list of the various Renegade chapters.

We've created a monster. And now I have to paint more purple!

Glad to help as it gives me something to do. And actually focuses my painting to my largest army instead of me flitting off to the Eldar (seriously!)

Also, love the assault marine bases. Whole force is stunning and that red is so much nicer when finished.

But yep. Slow. Proper and epic. Let's make this something people can get involved in - ironically it's also well away from the Black Legion and Ultramarines too! (Haha! I defy you standard GW army schemes!)

Sorry for being dense...how do you run a global campaign?

I took your advice - as always and went with dark grey (almost black) looks banging. I only painted 4 though before the misses stuck V on and I ended up watching it.

Typical me, I'm not happy with how they've turned out and have had to stop myself from reaching for the Fairy power spray!

We demand photos before you decide to be unhappy.

And such a campaign would have to be very well organised. With lots of nods toward fluff.

Very much a Renegade-Loyallist themed campaign - also trying to figure out how far out certain chapters stray and patrol - don't want to exclude folk but don't want to do an EoT warden based campaign with...say...Red Corsairs being a bit far from home.

OMG! i'd totally forgotten about Ichar IV that was an awesome campaign as well! I think it was the story driven bat reps with really interesting photo's that did it for me! so much going on in the background you could almost hear the battle raging! I doubt we could percieve something as grand as that, but we'll have a shot at some fun though! :-) you got an army and can join WarMill?

On a side note speaking of Bat reps and things, can i have peoples opinions on whether I should use this thread as my one stop Nerdfest09 shop and post up my other w.i.p's and bat reps when I play? just so i'm not making threads left right and centre :-) and i've got a couple of non Exemplar marines i'll be starting soon too.

I have this itching sensation in the back of my skull to start a small 40k army and figure, if I did, I would keep my random WIP blog seperate and start a new one for my 40k army. This probably won't happen, since I'm an incredibly slow painter, but it would help to keep the random blog random and the army blog consistent. Just my two cents.

Yeah, more than likely, I would do Word Bearers, because I just think they're hands-down the coolest Legion. Something about them and their dark rituals. The way they destroy and rebuild cities in the chaos god's image, constantly corrupting the pillars and symbols of the empire. They exude this perfect idea of we're right and righteous and you and your false god is nothing but lies. They also are great for converting and kit bashing. Using DA, BT and other robes and such with long litanies of hate and scroll and script work out the wazoo. Just pure chaos undivided with an excuse to field lots of demons. I also think devoting an army to one god would drive me nuts, since I think they're all too awesome. The story of Lorgar is pretty awesome too, how he came to the realization that the Emperor is wrong and the chaos gods are infinite, despite leading the most devote worshippers of the Emperor. If you have the time, Lexicanum has a great summary of their story: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Word_Bearers

On the other hand, since the original Dawn of War game, I've had a concept for my own SM chapter called The Iron Will. They would essentially be a Iron Hands successor chapter with lots of bionics and steam-punkish gears and cogs. Which would work out as I have a batch of wrist watch pieces. I also like that the color scheme I came up with for them is unique to any GW branded chapter. But I've always been drawn to the dark powers of chaos and, "evil will always win, because good is dumb." (Lord Helmet, Spaceballs)

Look forward to seeing your finished Libby and the new tac squad.

Cheers moltar, your ideas sound good! i'd actually love to see both of them done by you! the iron will in particular I like, maybe you could have them as an iron warriors sucessor so you can still run some chaos goodies in there?

but if you decide on the word bearers you have to make your captain hq just an all gold and ornate arrogant so and so! also a very cool army, I've toyed with a chaos daemon army in my mind but I just can't help but play the 'good' guys! even if dark helmet says otherwise....we've lost the bleeps, we've lost the creeps, and we've lost the sweeps!... :-)

Alright, I managed to take some quick update shots! I hate it when you take pics and then they show up all the little mold lines and imperfections that you thought were good? these are some of those! but at least I've got more work to show!

firstly the Termi bases and troops!

next up is the 2 rhino's i've been working on for what feels like ages! I know there's a mold line right up the turret gunners arm but in daylight with your eyes closed you don't even notice it!

I fiddled around with the rhino's and decided that grey arrows on the doors looked best, I tried black but somehow the grey looked right on them, the kit from chapterhouse is pretty good and the skulls in particular are really nicely done and add that touch of grim darkness we love to see!

And here's the new helmet on my Ven dread, it was an old helmet from a kit bashed chaplain I did about 6 years ago! I never even re painted it! (naughty me!) it looks o.k (probably as you can only see the top half )

That's about it at the moment! hopefully I can paint my Libby tomorrow hope the bases and bits look up to standard? I wish I had better stuff to show you

Until next week my friends!

Hi Lukewild, you CAN do it dude, it was the same with me, I struggled to paint black and lenses so i did some research and found that there are colours that blend better for lenses, so now all I do is paint the eye socket blood red, then the bottom front half of the eye lense blazing orange and then golden yellow just blended into the front and a dot of white in the rear corner :-) you can adjust the ease of painting by watering the paint down if you've got the patience and doing multiple coats, another thing that helps is only posting photo's where the pics look good! lol! :-) give it a try and pop some pics up here for us to see?

@jiirc: thanks james, I told you that mold line wasn't so bad! :-) I'm itching now to get my Cousin to take some proper shots to put in the gallery and see how they look! the models really do look better in person as to what i can manage with my camera at home, or i can get a part of them looking good but then other parts look ordinary! I've still got another dread and my 2 landspeeders to do now! which i'm rally looking forward to painting for you guys (and me of course!)

I managed to do a little work and i'd like some opinions on it, i've never painted blue or yellow before so it was a test for me, I highlighted regal blue by adding sw grey to it, I was hoping to blend it in smoother but it ended up as quite a hard line highlight, once i'd started blocking in the other colours though (bone, yellow) it looked o.k and next to my other marines the method didn't appear out of place, i'd just like to know what you guys think of it so far? still a long way off but I thought i'd show you some w.i.p

The other thing i'm working on is my Terminator chaplain, I wanted someone to join my guys to help them kick ass in combat and who better than a hard ass chaplain? I've used the new grey knights torso and tabbard with standard terminator legs, and the chaplain skull mask from chapterhouse studios, i'm still working on getting parts for the arms as yet! but soon it will happen I've filed down the sword on the chest to replace maybe with a skull motif? and you can see in the background my spent bolter casings from secret weapon miniatures, not bad but very fiddly to use!

Oh and I finally got some dice! it might not seem like much but I've not played many games and now I want to actually play so i need some hardware! got me some dice to match my army! is that lame? I think they're cool as!

@Gitsplitta: thanks for the compliment on the arches, I wondered what to do with him for ages to give him some colour without going overboard and still letting him look like a marine exemplar! I like it too

Hope to talk to you all soon!

I'm a really big fan of hard line edge highly, I know it isn't very realistic but I just like the look of it, makes your models pop on the battle field. I do my space wolves like that, even more so even, so I'm a big fan. The blue looks really nice too. It's all coming along really nicely!

Well bugger me, the blue on the Librarian looks delicious.

Best not come over here, I might end up licking it to absorb the sharpness of it!

thanks DSS! I'm stoked you like how he looks! he's a bit chalky in places but i'm hoping when he's got all his other colours on him it'll just 'flow'
i'm not sure about you 'licking' him though i've seen a pic of you somewhere and you look kinda compulsive and I fear you may just swallow him to absorb more sharpness
I may hopefully have his armour and tabbard done tomorrow and then it's just the head and pistol to do! i'm looking forward to painting the yellow tabbard (as the fluff states) 'cos i've never painted up a yellow like this before!

Game on!...campaign style bro!

Haha! Especially as by January I'll have at least 1750 points of Extinction Angels done (as part of the local Tale thing here) and 3,000 points of Dark Elves.

Which I now have to buy -another- Dragon for.

Stupid new shiny thing o.o

@whalemusic: I'm glad you like how it's all going :-) I wondered when someone would notice those pads! lol! they're actually part of the 'master of the rites' set from maxmini, they are meant to fit on power armour but with a bit of force and hopefully some clever painting you'll never notice? Dice shopping at the end of the month for me!

I want a set of the Lore of Beasts, Lore of Life, Lore of Shadow and Lore of Heavens dice :3

Thanks for the dice props! :-) I plan on grabbing some more as well, black with red pips! and then all I need is scatter dice I think? and then the templates and i'm set!

and if you're interested I've nearly finished my Librarian! I painted his power sword using the airbrush technique but it didn't work for me at all so I had to change tack and try something else! i'll post up pics friday when he's finished, but i'm still happy with him, he's a lot brighter than the rest of my army but that's not a bad thing, at least you can tell he's a special character!

are those other dice you're talking about for a different game or is that the brand or titles of them?

They're the new dice coming out with the Storm of Magic stuff for Fantasy next month. Like the skull dice but with the Lore symbols and different colours. Clearly want them for my Lizards... so perhaps should get Light instead of Shadow...my Dark Elves can suffer!

Eagerly waiting for Friday - the Librarian was looking rather nice and the fact he's brighter isn't bad at all. He is sort of different!

Well I do have certain positive qualities...besides mostly being an evil, egoistical bastard lol.

but I need to finish Tomas my Librarian before i start him, but that should be done by friday this week! only his face to do now

I already renamed him to Don Tomaso De La pomeranza y Pomodoro.
He is also mounted on a bike, one of them 18 century weird-O bikes with gigantic front wheels, just like the ones used in Evansdale although I am not certain those can turbo boost that well

I´ll stuff you up a nice package of eh, stuff for you. Some angels of death LR doors etc as I would love to see what nice things you´ll do with your landraider in the future.

LOL Don Tomaso De La pomeranza y Pomodoro it is then! but he doesn't get a 'penny farthing bike' you haven't earnt it yet! no turbo boost either...not even a chain! you can damn well peddle your evil egotistical legs off to get to the enemy!.....or you can just gate of infinity

Just imagine the hilarity if I could model a character on one of those bikes! it would be epic

Thanks for more of your package I am really REALLY looking forward to doing the other landraider with those doors, I also request a photograph for my mantle, maybe a kitchen table with a strange sausage on it or something? you know, just something normal

...and if you're lucky i'll send you those biscuits that aren't as strange as my towns populace ...this is gonna read strange to those who don't know us that well lol

Hello everyone! happy thursday! I know I usually update fridays but I didn't sleep when I got home today as I just wanted to finish my Librarian Tomas! or, as he was re named by the person responsible for inspiring me...Don Tomaso De La pomeranza y Pomodoro! thanks Tomas

I managed to get a few shots of him finished, they appear a touch washed out as the light was harsh and the camera decided not to focus where I wanted it too! but I think you get the idea? i'm actually really happy with him and enjoyed the painting of the blue and yellow! the yellow was tricky but I also intend on painting up an imperial fist as a test for myself so that'll be fun as well! i'm not entirely pleased with the finish of his face as I have done much better faces in my time! (my wolf guard terminators in my gallery) but as it's been so long since i've done them i'm finding it difficult to get the hang of it again! but I can't complain, i'm pleased with him overall and the more I paint the more I learn right

I hope you all like him....so without further ado......I present you with.....Don Tomaso De La pomeranza y Pomodoro!

I tried to airbrush the power sword but I completely mucked it up and said words that rhymed with muck but were harsher in their meaning! so i had to invent my own way of doing it that I liked, when I get the pro shots done in a couple of weeks you'll see it better but it's not too bad

I think he looks able to defend the imperium from the evils of the warp spawned renegades quite well don't you?

let me know what you think or what i can or should change!

NF, that libby looks awesome dude. The blues, especially around his collar, look stunning and the yellow plays of of them well. I think you may be a little harsh on yourself about the face. I think it looks pretty good. I agree with the others, that I think you could do better on the power sword, but other than that he looks great. I'm sure he sticks out like a sore thumb against your black and red army though. Is that just a standard SM torso? or is that like a sternguard torso?

Hmm looks like I need to do something to my sword then? not sure what? I tried to airbrush but couldn't get it to work! I may try and swirl some more blue and white into it?

@Greydeathone: You must paint your libby! the emperor decrees it! and you can never have enough stuff on the go! i've still got 2 landspeeders, 1 dreadnought, 10 man tac squad, and my assault marines to finish by july....not enough time!

@Moltar:thanks for the compliments! the blue doesn't look bad imo it's a nice change from black and red, the torso is just the plastic high collar one from the command frame I think but it's nothing special fits nice i think with the grey knights back with the little hood so his head looks kinda recessed in his armour! but today i'm back into my red and black guys!

@whalemusic: Hey buddy glad you could see them how I wanted, and thanks again for explaining why they may have been wrong before! I really appreciate your help and yep, a SD objective would be awesome if you've got an idea for something cool? I have a real itching to play a rescue style game against my mate using your marine

Righto, back into the world of grey plastic and fine smelling glue

Working on my power swords today amongst other things! I don't want to lightning bolt style them but wanted to try for a pale edge stipple blended into a darker centre on the blades using a bit of water i managed to kind of coach the paint where I wanted it to fade and stretch to, the photo's are better than before but they don't really convey the way they look accurately though but never the less, I popped him onto my assault sergeant and worked on them for awhile. the squad is nearly done should have them finished in the next day or two, I like the pose on this guy, almost superman taking off into the sky feel to him

I plan on using some new methods and techniques on this one, and spending a bit of time blending, green is also a colour i've never painted properly before so it's trial by error! wish me luck guys! i'll post pics up on friday again!

Now I have a small question for you all, I am putting together my landspeeders and am still unsure about the paint scheme for them, I want you opinions please as to which parts to paint red and which to leave black? I was looking at my old Raven Guard speeder here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/128779-raven%20guard%20land%20speeder.html to try and see what I should do, should I paint the front bumper bit red as well as the two side fins at the rear and the top wing? or just the front bumper and two side wings? keeping in mind the marines red arms will add more of the colour too, so how should i do it everyone?

talk to you soon

Forget the speeders... I really like your drop pod! Well done my friend!

OK back on topic. Actually I'm glad you're pondering this as I have 3 land speeders to paint/re-paint myself as well as two LS storms... so the question about how do deal with them artistically is quite pertinent.

Your all-black speeder looks great. But I think part of that is a product of the fact that your weathering is so good it's not really all black anymore. The scrapes and dings and grey-to-black shading give it a much more dynamic look than if it was a more traditional solid black with edge highlights. It's also a lot more realistic.

I'd suggest leaving the bumper as is (or painting the new one like your old) as it really compliments the black well and is convincing as a realistic treatment for something that is essentially indented to get dinged up. For red... I like the recesses in the nose, the to of the spoiler and perhaps all or part of the side wings.

On the other hand, it might look cool to leave the wings black and do the nose recesses, the top of the air scoop and the top of the spoiler red, so your color was concentrated down the main body of the vehicle.

Or one last possibility: nose indentations, cabin brace (thing in center) and air scoop (top and back). Then perhaps doing only the tips of the side wings in red to accentuate the design. I think I like this one best.

Hmmm points to ponder thanks Gits, I also like the idea of the third option, problem is i'm trying to keep all my vehicles in the same vein as the chapter scheme with black bodies and the sides in the red colour, hence my rhino's and raider :-) BUT, seeing as these are totally different styles of fighting vehicle for them I think i can play around a bit, so you like the bumper bar thing like the original one, if go that route lets hope i can remember how to paint it! I know i can pretty much replicate the body as it's the same method i use on all my black, it's just the additional parts i'm having trouble deciding on, i even contemplated just painting the entire back half from behind the marines red and leaving the front black? good thing is, I have 2 of them to play with :-)
and I'm glad you like my drop pod too! I'm ordering another one for this army soon and i'm stuck in a similar dilemma! do i paint the doors red or the vanes in betwen to match the chapter scheme? if only there was a landspeeder and drop pod painter program! lol

cheers Gits!

Yeah, that would be nice. I believe I've seen pods done black with red on the insets on the veins (like I did the yellow on mine) and it's looks really nice. Your black is so good it's hard to play it down. Do you mind telling me how you do it? I have a certain black-based special project coming down the road and I'm casting about for good approaches to the color. I like yours & would be interested in your methods.

If you've already described it somewhere... a link to the post would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers mate! it'll be great no matter what you decide... your skills are top notch!

And I think that was Pyriel being nice? wasn't it? :-)

You should see me when I´m not being nice

Chappies really only come to their use in BA and BT lists and even then only in a very rare builds with specific units. Sorry but this is how GW made them, dont shoot the messenger.

The speeder needs some secondary colour, I would add light grey in smaller areas to complement the black.

Hey Pyriel, thanks dude! I don't think i'll annoy you as much to see you not being nice! well, i'll try anyway or you can only msg me when you're happy? how about that? sounds good to me! :-) lol

Chaplains are crappy then :-( oh well, at least he'll be fun to paint, i'll still just throw him into the mix running with a squad of assault termies and see what happens, i think he give a re roll for 'to hit'? and whatever happens he'll look imposing getting nailed on the field :-)

Speeder quandry: you think light gray somewhere would also help? do you mean panels or additions such as edges and highlights?

@Gits: i'll send you a pm with my black recipe when i get up tomorrow/today (whatever shift worker time is) you'll read it and just go "what! that's it? noooo too easy!" and i hope I explain it correctly so feel free to ask me to explain or send pics! :-)

Thanks nf! Too easy is always welcome.

Unfortunately Pyriel is right... making chappies a better value than other VSM HQs is not easy. In a fun game it doesn't matter of course, but if you're trying to be competitive... it might be a tough sell.

Maybe red on the nose indents and the dividing roll bar thing? Or give it some racing stripes (not kidding). One thick on up the driver side one the first, a think on and thin one on the 2nd, Medium, thin, and thick for the third. Might be cool?

Racing stripes! oh now you've got me thinking! that would actually look cool as! just stripes and the little wings red could work i'm actually assembling them as we speak and i think once i've primed them and can have an actual look at them i'll make my decisions? and it's a tough one! I like the stripes idea and also gits suggestions too it just depends on how it all fits ith the rest of the guys, should hopefuly have some more idea today or tomorrow if I can get some good solid painting time in today and friday (yes Gits it's now thursday morning here in Tasmania and it's 4:40am) but i've got a special salamander to paint first! he's realy got me inspired at the moment, my method's looking o.k and now i need to stretch my limited skills to see if i can finish something quite nice!

Speeder quandry: you think light gray somewhere would also help? do you mean panels or additions such as edges and highlights?

Panels on the front plate and maybe rudders on the alerions-thingies.

So, it looks like you're 15 hours ahead of us. Hmmm.

Oh, nerdfest09´s steam-aged village needs all the hours ahead it can get lol

But then again look who´s speaking, the guy who lives in freaking goblinburg...

I'll try and paint him today but he'll definitely be done by next week, as i'm too keen and looking forward to painting him, I was inspired by Pyriel's salamanders and the style of the massive voodoo terminator so I concocted my own way of doing it, lets see if it gets a good rap or needs tweaking! :-)

I like the look of his terminators, that´s going to be one really exciting thing to look forward seeing.

and a heart of steel (although I believe it's soft inside?)

It´s called mercury.
Even I cant be all obnoxious all the time.

Lol, let's ask him then!......Oh pyriellllll..... :-)

What!

Next week after the ridiculous work stress that I have voluenteered to put myself through this month I´m planning on starting my step by step GK paint tutorial.
That´s gonna be a nice piece of therapy after this s****y months work that ruined all my sleep/workout/eating/life rythm.

You guys see to that I´ll do it though.

@ inmygravenimage: Thank you, i'm glad you like what i've done so far! I like nice looking models but as I get very easily dejected with my painting and how long it takes, so now i've taken it upon myself to find methods I can use that look good on the table and are bloody quick to do, I try and only use 2 highlights washes etc.. except my faces and trickier things, I don't think i've done badly considering I only started the army about 9 weeks ago and only paint for 1 day a week! :-)

@Pyriel: Righto then my friend I'll hold you to that tutorial! I want to see how you paint the nmm grey myself, it's something i'd like to try on boltguns and parts on 'special' models I paint!
I know it's tough for you but being obnoxious all the time is hard work! even for you to maintain! so take some time to relax from your gakky month of stress sit down enjoy the TimTams I send you, I give you permission not to share! :-)
And don't get me started on 'Goblinburg' or i'll bring up the flower garden and penguins again! :-)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Hail all those who wish of an update! I shall quench your thirst albeit with a small number of pics! I have been working on the salamander for Pyriel and gotten a fair way through painting him, I chose a darker theme to his armour as it's just what i prefer painting, firstly I undercoated him black, then gave him a shot of white from above to show me where I can shade and highlight, I then mixed chaos black and ork flesh together very thinly and painted this over all the original black areas to guide my highlights and colours, I then proceeded to use pure ork flesh and then mixed snot green and then pure snot green then snot green and a touch of golden yellow to highlight, all this i did with very thin washes of the colour and built it up slowly, this is something i've not done before but although time consuming it was easy to do and looks pretty nice, I wish (as usual) the photo's did it justice, I need to still do some more highlights and touch ups but he should be done tomorrow comments if you like, critisism if you must

I'm still working on the flame but thought i'd show you where i'm at with it!

I started working on my Chaplain and dreadnought, just a quick prime and burst of white for them although i did do a bit on the chappies helmet which looks ace!

I painted more of my assault squad today too! just finished one of the faces i'm happy with, suits the model I think!

And lastly for today a group shot of the army! as you'd expect it's not the best pic but you can get an idea of how far i've come in the last 9 or so weeks since i started this project! now I look at it I want to do an entire 4th company of Marines Exemplar!

There we go my friends! I hope it's been a good update for you all! I know i;ve enjoyed it
more soon! I promise.

Wow, that salamander looks awesome, way better then I expected. What secondary colours on things like armour edges etc are you planning to use?

Also, what colours do you use on those bleak faces (that assault marine).

Nobody understands me, its tough being obnoxious, just ask Ph3ar, the current leader of dakkas obnoxious-league lol.

The TimTams will be great but sadly, given the time it will take them to get here from your steam powered village and donkey-driven snailmail services they will most probably arrive petrified from old age.
Not that it will stop me consuming them though...

Dont worry, when I send you my super wafers I´ll be specific about the route of delivery, they dont exactly drown in wooden sail ships over in Czech-land but I ought to be able to find some sort of land based mail caravan through afghanistan to entrust them with.

And are we talking regular penguins or the eh, stolen ones?

My thanks to you all! glad i'm still doing something vaguely interesting for you! I am pleased with my salamander as like I mentioned I haven't painted green before! not sure what to paint for the other parts edges etc.. any suggestions, I may let him sit for a day or so to give me fresh eyes when i start him again, and i'm talking about the *ahem* Stolen penguin! although i heard a rumor that his bionic cousin will make an appearance as Tomas the Librarian's familiar!

Hi Axlbush I hope you enjoy what's here when you get a chance to browse with any length of time! it's all done ridiculously simple, all with plastic and a few resin parts although the Libby's pad is metal but that's all. I hope you get a bit more time to finish your 'box of death' when your gf gets better! (nothing too bad I hope?)

Yep, you sure did comment before on my new guys Mr.Malevolent but now there's new stuff and more progress! and today i'm hoping to get 90% done on my second Tac squad and maybe make a start building my 2 landspeeders I cut off the sprue the other night! How are your marines going? do you have enough to join the slowly evolving Eye of terror campaign we're trying to whip up? I also like your new Avatar! lookin' cool

Well, I have a week and a bit before the Marines Exemplar have their first battle: Against the forces of Chaos! papa Nurgle has encroached on planet Evandalus Prime threatening global plagues and destruction, the Marines Exemplar are en route in battle barge 'Harmony of Calm' the halls and sleeping cells ringing with the clattering of preparations as astartes readied themselves for war, this is what they train for, this is what they live for, hardened faces and focussed eyes concentrating on maintaning the holy bolters and weapons they would soon be wielding to smite those that oppose the will of the Emperor, Captain Naimad prowls the walkways in full Battle dress, armor polished to a menacing obsidian sheen while his pauldrons and arms glow under the lights a deep blood red as if he bathes in the blood of those they destroy, and destruction is all he will accept.

Chapter Master Raoul stood on the command deck, grim faced and alert to everything around him, the whir of servitors tracks as they carry loads of data to depositories, the constant ticking of fingers and plugs upon data slate screens updating defense positions making ready for planet fall, a pneumatic hiss sounded behind him, without turning he spoke, his voice a juxtaposition of an echo of rolling gravel, impossible to ignore and almost as hard not to shudder when hearing, Chapter master Raoul addressed Captain Naimad as the doors shut softly behind him, "Destroy them all Naimad, send them back to the warp cursed storm they came from, we are the Wardens of this sector and we shall do our duty to the Emperor, planetfall in 14 Terran days make ready for war!" at this a curt nod at master Raoul's direction as Captain Naimad left the deck to re address his troops and make sure everything was ready for what they had to do......

O.k sorry about that I got carried away telling you I'm having my first game in years soon! and speaking of, i need to go and paint more of those glorious servants of the almighty Emperor! it's currently 9am here so i've got all day to get stuck in, who knows I may finish everything?.....probably not though

Thanks again everyone for following my Blog it's honestly appreciated and keeps me inspired by all your kind words and help!

The brush was steady in the hand today no amount of caffeine could sway my passion for painting! managed to do more on the Salamander, I have done all the highlights now and just need to go back over him and paint in the darker recesses of the armour, being such an intricate armoured model I have missed some small bits I can't get too with the brush but you can only see them if you turn him upside down and look and I also did a little bit of the yet to be named Chaplain model, and he's looking good! i'm hanging to keep going with him, i've given him a green tabbard as they are the 4th company, I did lots of other work on my Tac squad but i can't put pics up because I have been timing each step i'm doing for a ten man squad and taking pics so I can see how long from start to finish it takes me to do, my guess was under 4 hours to have them from grey plastic to based and ready to play!

@Greydeathone: thanks dude! as always, it means a lot to me if you like my work, I really enjoyed painting the mkIII armour but i would assemble after painting some parts as i couldn't get my brush up in some tricky bits but i want to paint that bane of painters everywhere!....Yellow! and i'd like to do another early mk of armour except the imperial fist will be for another great artist Bullyboy76, looks like i may need to dark angels it up for you too dude? it'd be fun for me...if you want?

@LDP: And see it you shall!

Well, here's the finished Salamander I did, MkIII armour heresy style Oh Yeah! I enjoyed painting him immensely something different for me, i have never painted green armour before so it was trial by error and next time i'll know what approach to take, i really hope Pyriel likes him? can't wait to get nice photo's taken of all my stuff, i think i've got enough to get a good gallery started!

Well, here he is finished

There he is! I put on my first decal and painted over it to get it to look more in line with the model, but in the pic it's still a little damp and shiny, I don't imagine it'll be played with so it won't matter about it being delicate.
All I need to paint now is my tac squad, Dev squad, dread and 2 speeders! I hope that shall be enough to entertain you for the next 2 weeks? because that's all it'll take me and my lightning fast methods

Coming along nicely NF, very nicely indeed

I know it's a little unusual to post pics of your mini in someone else's thread, but a few weeks ago Nerdfest provided me with a copy of IA8 as inspiration for my Raven Guard army, he didn't ask for anything in return but I couldn't let such a generous gesture go without offering a little something in return:

This fella will be in the mail shortly to join the rest of NF's Exemplars, I think he'll fit in quite nicely

WOWZERS! Holy gak Chris! that looks amazing! thank you so much for painting him and sending him to me! it means a lot to me to have you do it! I wasn't asking for anything in return as I like to perpetuate the hobby and give out as much goodwill as I can especially to those who are passionate about painting and modeling and aren't shy about offering help and support and to have you with your phenomenal skills do that plus send me a bag of bits and pieces and spare parts! I swear I'd send you another book if I had it
He will be a formidable force on the board as i'm only learning how to play now after all these years! and every options I can get hold of will help me enjoy the world of 40k just that little bit more!
hopefully we can bounce ideas and modeling prospects off each other in the future? as I will ( I usually do) check your threads with reckless abandon looking to glean hints, tips, and inspiration which I find is never lacking from your work!

Good evening/morning dudes! hope everyone's been painting? I'm stoked you like my salamander especially the green! I will admit i'm kinda proud of my effort and only using 3 colours and a wash for the armour! I undercoated black then gave it a shot of skull white from the can from above the model to guide the highlights and shadows for me! I started by using GW Ork flesh for the darkest parts (i'm not sure if they still make it?) then i mixed snot green into the mix and started to bring the highlighlights up the armour plates until i was using pure snot green, next step was adding a small amount of golden yellow to the snot green and slowly blending it in to the highest points to get a nice highlight, all of these steps were with quite watered down paints just thicker than a wash and used multiple times to get it to blend right, I then used a thrakka green wash to tie the lot together and give it some depth, lastly I just re applied the final highlights sparingly on the armour and he's done!

only hint I can give is to paint the eye lenses first so it doesn't matter if you get paint on the helmet, the recesses on the mkIII are quite deep

then it was only the bolter done the usual way, boltgun metal, badab black wash then just some gold highlights and a touch of mithril silver.

The model itself was gifted to me from SCC who I gave a copy of IA8 to and he very genorously gave me some spare parts and is painting up the amazing chaplain a few posts up for me! I am a VERY lucky man! thank you again SCC!

Well, i hope I didn't ramble on to much and you can understand my method? if you need to ask me anyhing that i've missed or want me to slow down a bit and do it literally step by step then just ask! I'm on here mon/tue/wed nights for a long time each session!

Quickee, verbal update for you all as i'm at work at the moment :-) Just assembled 2 landspeeders ready for priming and painting, been thinking about my dev squad, do i just assemble them for ease and speed and have them all firing? or do i model one to be kneeling with the launcher at rest? Tac squad 2 is going well, only the highlights on the reds to go and bolters to paint! then it'll be a lengthy update with a mostly step by step and time trial of how long it takes from plastic to painted for them all!, Dreadnought is staring me down the last couple of days....and it scares me, he's armed to the teeth you know! :-)
counting down the days until my first game in a looooong time it appears will be a 1000 point one against Tyraneal's Tyranids! looks like they got distracted on the way to the eye of terror to face of against the nurgle marines! (the very next day that is!)

so, i'll be busy painting but I lose a whole day this week :-( i'm getting my Tattoo finished by my dodgy chinese tattooist who runs a restaraunt! he's really very good though and i'm looking forward to seeing what he free hands :-)

catch you soon, keep in touch!

For the dev, I'd mix up the poses as much as possible. The kneeling pose and running legs are something I wish I had in my devs I just finished up. After I had primed and done the AB work on mine, i realized all the poses were in firing and it was really really boring. It bothered me so much that I tried using the hobby knife to pry the legs off 3am in the morning. I just ended up scratching up the paintjob on the test model. The plastic glue bonds are strong!

As for assembling them prior to painting, I would do all of them except the heads unless the helms and bodies are the same colour. The heavy weapons aren't too bad to paint assembled so I'd say go for it.

Also, good luck with the tatoo. Make sure he doesn't tatoo "soup" in chinese or something on your body and tell you it stands for something else you wanted

Thanks Eggroll, I think you're right, i should mix up the poses somewhat, now all I need to do is find some different legs?...hmmm I just need a pair of running legs I think so I better get looking at some bits places! although i think they may have some time to wait (hopefully not too long) as I just started on my two speeders today! and since I love the model they'll be getting the majority of attention from me at the moment

Well, i'm also booked in to get some nice photo's of my models done on monday morning! can't wait to do that, I'll obviously pop them in here and in the gallery incase anyone wishes to vote on them should be up monday night or tuesday as long as there are no delays, I hope they look good!

My dodgy Chinese Tattoist has been working on my piece for a while now and he doesn't do chinese lettering on anyone so i'm safe I hope! he started out strangely though, owning a chinese restaraunt very stereotypically decorated and dated, he was a good artist at school and one day one of the local bikie members who frequent his shop saw his artwork and enquired as to if he could do that on skin? Hayden being cocky said I reckon and the very next week the bikie gang turned up with all the gear to do Tattoo's and said he could practice on them talk about thrown in the deep end! so he learnt the art by just trial and error on some big dudes! and now he's one of the most individual and clean artists i've had the pleasure of seeing!

More proper nerd updates soon!

Dude! I mean what can I say? Just...well I don't know. We started out in this hobby at the same time, we had our years in the wilderness as well and to see how phenomenal your skills have become is inspiring! I'm really looking forward to facing this army in a few short weeks!

Keep up the good work my friend

G'day from the land down under! it's time for bad photo update day! yayyyy! I bet you're all pumped by that statement? well then, without any more preamble here's where i'm at now, I assembled and primed my speeders not glueing the tops on so i can get to some details later and painted one front bumper red to see if it would look good? after visual consideration I think i may paint the bumper red and the two small side wings, along with the red arms of the marines it will suit the theme imo.

I also swapped out arm on my assault sarge! after much deliberation I decided that i didn't really like the way the power sword arm sat on the model, while I love the concept of the bionics attatched it was just slightly too big for it I think, so now he's power fisted up!

Here's also the colours I used to paint the salamander marine I did, I think it worked well for those few colours!

Building time! I started finally painting the buildings I have had tucked away in the cupboard for the last year! I bought them from TheCombatCompany and they're the Amera plastic buildings, not too bad but lacking in any real details and texture, but for the price and size i can live with that, so i blended up some cork tiles in the blender (sorry dear!) and used the small bits as rubble and the large ones as fallen concrete slabs all glued down with a pink hot glue gun! I then used floquil to give them some texture on the walls and undercoated them all black, I used the airbrush today to start painting them with barley grey, this is as far as i've got but i'm waiting on more paint at the moment, any more ideas you guys can gve me? i'm thinking some subtle dried blood spatters on the walls and some loose leaf papers littered about the place, should I now go lighter on the walls? soot marks? fire damage? (I think fire damage works with the current look?) any suggestions will be assimilated into my file of ideas

So there we are for today, hopefully if my Tatt doesn't take too long i'll do more tomorrow and pop up for you all! and I also wanted to say thanks again for all your support with this blog of mine! I honestly appreciate all you have to say and advise me on! i've gleaned some good ideas and worked out some kinks i had trouble with and it's kept me happily painting and more importantly making some good friends on here which means more than any model! so lets keep it up and i'll see you all soon!

Awesome day today! got some lovely shots done of all my models! I can't get them in the gallery at the moment for some reason maybe too big? so I'll post them up here for your viewing pleasure! I'm really happy with how they turned out and I hope you like them all, i'd love any comments and critiques you have? i've picked up on a few small things to touch up but overall I am very proud of this army to date and am keen to get the other stuff done and photographed next wednesday I have to warn you there is a LOT of pics to post up so I hope it goes smoothly!

as they say in Mario Kart....Ere we go!

First up is the Salamander marine I did for my good friend Pyriel! I don't want to sound like a pompous gakker but I am really impressed and proud of this model! I spent some time and tried to produce something that would/could lead my painting into a higher level of skills and still have fun!

Next up is my Librarian, Tomas (for short! )

Venerable Dreadnought, Maundis

Land Raider Crusader:

Rhino transport with excellent chapterhouse studio doors and hatch!

Assault squad Valan, the whispers

Terminator Assault squad:

Tactical squad: the deathstalkers:

The darker shots are the best representation of actual colors and shades of red I could get, lloks deep and damn sexy!

There we are guys! one very happy nerdfest09 is off to paint more right now!

Thanks Guys!

@Darkstarsabre: Why thank you very much, they need to keep sharp roaming that 'ol Eye of Terror!, i'm glad you like how they're coming along, any updates on our master plan for a worldwide wardens V renegade?

@Tyraneil: Glad you're impressed dude, it's always gonna be a fun game when we've both got decent painted armies! shame it'll be on a double bed though i'll need to get a game board asap! can't wait to learn the game! see you wed morning! early

@Jirc: hey dude! good to hear from you again I do think it's turning out quite sexy myself I struggled with the melta to get that result, trying for a glow that represented a set of red hot headers from a turbo car! the photo does make it look just that bit better though! now it's dread #2 and speeder 'o' rama then more photo's next week....ahhh the joy of holidays

May the Emperor protect! (warden chapters )
