Coming August 2011! Can't wait! I thought this game looked awesome from the other trailers I've seen, but this one makes it look even better. The chainsword/hand to hand combat seems much improved. I also really like kicking an Ork's entire top half off. That's a mighty boot worthy of Duke himself.
Some of the later shots seem like they toned down the bolter's rate of fire too, which is nice. It was a bit machine-gun-y in those early shots. Even if they didn't, I'm still looking forward to this game.
Holy crap am I excited about this. I've stayed out of FPS games for years to avoid getting sucked in and losing big chunks of my life (that's the tabletop game's job!). But I'm totally getting abck into it for this.
Just Dave, do you play a lot of FPS? I can see how this one is a bit behind the curve on graphics comapred to other stuff our there, and maybe play too- but the background should hopefully help make up for that.
Yeah man, plenty, when I want to be I can be quite a 'hardcore' gamer (just finished Mass Effect 2 for the second time. On insanity). Technically though, this isn't an FPS.
I just don't like the look of the action; one of the opening shots with the bolter spraying everywhere I didn't like. It can be accurate as the others showed, but that just suggested to me that there's no real... 'ability' behind this. When he was in close combat and he chainsawed a grot and it just disappeared in a little cloud of blood I was underwhelmed. It literally disappeared! Then later on he stabs an Ork in the chest and its arms fall off?!
I know this is coming across as bad reasoning and I know it's partially me being picky, but I don't know, I'm really not liking the feel of this. Gameplay-wise this is coming across very similar to 'Metal Arms Glitch in the System' if any of you ever played that, but that game didn't take itself seriously.
Tbh, I'm not really one for graphics, I never seem to be able to appreciate good graphics as much as others, so that wouldn't be a problem for me.
I think for me it's probably the gameplay that's spoiling it and that's a pretty huge factor IMHO. It's not your conventional FPS where you can really feel things, like Half-life, Dues Ex or Halo, it's not as refined as Gears of War which seems to be it's closest similarity to me.
Game-play wise I can't see it comparing to Gears of War in terms of refinement, it seems a bit more like... 'Dynasty Knights' (?) i think it's called, where it simply looks cool, but has no real depth or technique IMHO.
Apologies if this comes across as really party-poopy...

Wow you really took the words out of my mouth. I would add though that I do have a problem with the graphics in addition to the things you've mentioned. I don't think that even my 40k fanaticism will save this one for me.
Any idea if there will be a co-op multiplayer option?
Please?
Other things that Relic wouldn't talk about yet include specifics on the two menu items "Multiplayer" and "Co-op" (the latter seems natural, since a few missions in the campaign have A.I. squadmates giving you some backup).
Which is why earlier I stated I would be buying a console to play this. I like the idea of my son and I playing through a campaign---he can carry the load so to speak why I do funny/stupid things.
I'll tell him each time his marine dies and we fail the mission, Daddy loves him a little less---that should keep him motivated.
The rumors have been 4 player co-op, ever since the original E3 announcement trailer shown to the media showed a Drop Pod landing with 4 unique Marines charging out of it.
Especially the textures seem very bad (see 0:38). Hopefully this will change although out zoomed cc doesn't support this. Effects like smoke doesn't seem to be 2d insted of 3d (not 3D I mean 3D).
Hugely immersive world means flat levels with nice skyboxes but don't worry Gears of Smurf is your traditional fantasy: all have guns. Lukily developer luvs the ip and is not selling out the world aka blood and violence (0:50).
It seems Smurf will be another consoleport I wont buy.

He is mistaken. Gamestop automatically puts a release date of 12/31/XX in their system for a game that is announced as "Coming 20XX." When I was still working there around a year ago we had Space Marine in the system as 12/31/11 because the announced release window was sometime during 2011. Gamestop doesn't update this release date until an official one is set so the manager that you talked to is either oblivious to this practice by Gamestop or he genuinely believed that the game was releasing on the 31st.

It's been that way in our systems for the past few months, yet every ad we're seeing for the game says either "Summer 2011" or "August 2011," so it's probably an issue of the release date not being updated by corporate.
I really wont have enough money this year. You have this, Battlefield 3, Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, Necrons, wow, not enough money for a guy still in his last year at school.
TBH I like how relic seems to know their 40k stuff, they're the only company I would trust to make a decent current gen40k game. In some parts the graphics seem brilliant, and then in others, not so much, like the Grots just exploding into a cloud of blood, that was weird. At least its an over the shoulder TPS rather than an FPS, so you can actually see your pimped out Smurf Chainswording some Orks.

Jeez, I though my dad was bad...
Anyways, this game is SO MINE!! It looks absolutely awesome.
If the reviews are even half-way decent I will be able to convince my friend to pick this up - we're always looking for some good, fun co-op multiplayer (currently working our way through Borderlands)...
@the people moaning about the graphics. You are showing your ignorance, how the heck are you gonna judge the graphics based on an SD video, even if you choose HD it is still HEAVILY compressed. The poster having a go at the TEXTURES (?!) in the game from a compressed flash video is a bit of a fool.
Saying that however it does appear to be running on a modded version of the engine that ran DOW 2 which will indeed mean it will be graphically behind the curve.
My opinion, (Puts on Videogame afficianado hat) the hack and slash style close combat looks like it has plenty of feed back ad heft and appears to be a three hit then finisher kinda set up, possibly with a heavy and light attack. This is quite unique in TPS' (Thirdpersonshooters) so this could be a great addition. Speaking again as a bit of an expert in game terms it is usual that the puniest enemies 'Explode' this is for two reasons: 1 you need to feel powerful, hence Squishy enemies, 2 based on the fact you will be fighting larger volumes of grots it is better from a framerate/performance standpoint that the corpses disapear as per game mechanics they are needless physics objects (processor eating).
One of the more enlightened posters mentioned how the bolter currently looks innacurate, this could be cause for concern. Like the rest of 40k buffs i like the idea of the bolter being a high power kindof shotgun/marksman rifle hybrid. Lets hope there are at least some more enjoyable weapons in the game (judging from the plasma gun we could be in luck).
All in All i think this game will be above average.

At first I was impressed then I am thinking, are these cut scenes or actual game play?
Too many times especially for 40K, things look so good before release and become a major disappointment when released, so I am very cautious with this game.
With all the slow mo going on, it looks more like a movie than actual game play. Even if this is actual game play, how many games did we get that look awesome but have very bad game play? Also shoot, hack slash, shoot hack slash, it looks like it can be very very repetitive and boring to play after 2 hours of game play.
So I am not getting to excited for this game at all. Just look at DoW II how almost everyone was so stoked and excited for it, and allot of people were so disappointed with it.
For anyone that Is intereted the game is infact running on a modified version of the Darksiders engine created by Vigil games. So anyone that has played that game will know what to expect. As i own that game i can assure you the graphics will be solid but are without the fidelity of a contempary fps or indeed an unreal engine 3 game :(
I'm somewhat trepidatious about this release, although I'm glad they are using the good ol' Ultramarines rather than the Blood Ravens, as doing so may result in more players learning about the Tabletop game...
As to the game itself, it looks pretty enough, mildly repetative, and I don't know about the plot. Orks invading to steal some dakka? Ok, not deep or complex, but maybe it will surprise me.
For the most part, I hope it sells like crazy though, so everyone will get their tabletop plasticrack, and make GW their dealer.
To people complaining about the Gretchin deaths. If you look at the video around 2:39 you can see two of them get knocked onto their backs rather than explode when they're hit.

Sorry, but your message is lost in-between your language skills.
I'll be getting it for sure, I think some of the blood work looks overdone, but then it's still not as bad as Dragon Age.
Not sure how it will play, God of War/Gears of War with no cover is the two I've heard mentioned, but as I've played neither, it's going to be a new one for me.
At the end of the day its going to be Streets of Rage like, it's Why I raise an eyebrow of the Dynasty Warriors hate that goes around some mags, yet they still rate Streets of Rage as iconic and awesome.
Dynasty Warriors is the natural successor of the side scrolling beat em up, its just in a fully 3-d battle and you chase stuff around. Love the game series much like I loved Streets of Rage.
If it plays anything like Dynasty Warriors, this will be my new fave game of the year. Just a shame its too much to play with my eldest. Hell, I'll probably have to hide it, if he see's a game with a Marine on the cover he'll be pleading to play it. He's only seven.
Oh and on a side note, Dynasty Warriors 7 is probably the best one since DW3, so many good additions this time, controls feel right as well. Camera was totally borked in DW6. (Just thought I'd add that in for anyone who thought DW6 was a let down, and was skipping DW7 as they thought it was going to be more of the same. )
Just Dave wrote:Am I the only one that was really underwhelmed by this? Guess so...
No, it reminded me a lot of the Dynasty Warriors series. Super dudes killing scads of enemies without breaking a sweat.
It is pretty, but I doubt there will be much replay capability with it.
I only hope for a co-op mode.
Dynasty Warriors! That's the game I was thinking it looked like. To me, it seems like a cross between Dynasty and Gears, but without the more refined gameplay of gears it seems.
Personally, I don't care for Dynasty Warriors and it's gameplay and that's almost certainly what's putting me off this. I think for me, much like much Mattlov (again), a co-op mode would be its only saving grace...
Will be picking this up, especially if there is co-op.
Hopefully we will get some chaos marines/cultists in the final game, like the original demo from an E3 a few years ago... (before it got shelved then taken up by relic)
"Space Marines are very serious, very controlled, the Orks are sort of messy, vicious, violent, so adds a nice contrast."
That quote right there is why no one likes Ultramarines. Any chance Gamestop will have a pre-order bonus code that provides an alternate skin for the main character to be a drunk Space Wolf?
This reminds me... hey Relic when can we get an Epic videogame? Just like DOW but scrolled out to include whole companies of troops, superheavies, titans and gargants fighting over immense battlefields - Supreme Commander style. With the effective death* of tabletop Epic this would be a fantastic new use of the 40K IP that doesn't clash with GW's main market.
*yes I know you can still buy the models... but with no real support, a severely incomplete range and at prices more than doubled since the products were released
-As a few have stated, yes, it's a third person shooter, not first person.
-Also stated: multiplayer and co-op have been confirmed.
-Chaos Daemons and Marines have been confirmed as one of the "other" antagonists in the game. Take from that what you will.
-Multiplayer (allegedly) pits Ultramarines off against Chaos Marines in team based combat.
-Chainswords are not the only melee weapons usable, Storm Shields, Thunder Hammers, and Lightning Claws are slated to be in too.
Make of it what you will. Personally, I'm very excited for this game. I think some of the things people are criticizing it for are silly, but that's just me. This is going to be a definite buy for me, even if I do wait until Christmas to do so.
Why does everyone care that it's an Ultramarine? Big deal, he's blue, get over it. Saying "I won't buy this!!!11!!" because of a character skin is stupid; if you painted him red it would be the same game. That being said, character skins are common pre-order bonuses, so who knows.
Looking foreward to this. I am sure it will be something I buy, play for 15 minutes, then never touch again, but hopefully those will be some fun 15 minutes.
I am not saying this because I think there will be something wrong with the game, its just that I tend to be in a video game funk. Games look cool, I buy them, I play them for about 15 minutes, then get bored and go paint miniatures lol.

As far as I know this isn't coming to PC, and is going to be an Xbox 360/PS3 game.
Its on steam, and says PC at the bottom of the trailer.
Alright, so I can stop playing LP2 for my third person action fix.
Co-Op means I am preordering it and beating it with my friend the week it comes out.
You can change your armor colors/make your armor look more fancy for multiplayer (with unlocks as you play)
It won't always be smashing orks, you will also have to fight traitor marines, whom are much more difficult to take down and it will be a challenge to fight 3 at the same time, along with backup from traitor guardsmen and demons.
Rumors that it will have SM vs CSM competitive multiplayer floating around, don't know about that for sure. There is definitely some sort of co-op multiplayer coming though.

Well I'll be. Awesome! +1 for reading comprehension!
Made by pastey geeks with a penchant for facial hair - CHECK!
Everytime I think i'm growing out of computer games something good like this comes along.
PS - agreed with the last youtube comment about Relic games always orks being a threat then Choas and Eldar being behind everything (AGAIN!). Still Can't beat a classic! I'm in.

Hey if gameplay is like that game I REALLY want this game. Metal Arms is great fun. Damn you Blizzard for ruining the sequel!
But yes, do want. I wonder if the Titan is used at any point in the game, obviously not by the actual Space Marines but actually piloted by the appropriate pilots, that would be so cool.
The titan is a major plotpoint; I'd be surprised if they didn't use it at some point. That'd be like having a telephone in a shot of a movie, then at no point having it ring.
Brother SRM wrote:The titan is a major plotpoint; I'd be surprised if they didn't use it at some point. That'd be like having a telephone in a shot of a movie, then at no point having it ring.
I'm hoping for some epic fight stages within an operating titan destroying a city.
On one hand, it's annoying that they can't seem to get away from Orks as an antagonist, when there are so many cooler races to fight against. But on the other hand, I'm very glad that Chaos isn't the antagonist, as that would essentially make the game SMs vs. SMs, which would, once again, annihilate the scope and breadth of the 40k universe. Luckily Relic has hinted toward another antagonist, and there were sightings of Tyranid-like forms in the background of some screen shots... All conjecture at this point.
Nobody hates SMs more than I do. I think they are the most vanilla army in 40k. And the most vanilla chapter is the Ultramarines so that's a dose of double-bland... But truth be told, this game looks amazing and I will be buying it. As has been stated, the dominant chapter of SM in a game like this is completely irrelevant. Complaints about enemies exploding when kicked and other exaggerated violence? Uhh... welcome to Video Games 101. That's the way it's been done since Mortal Kombat came out 20 years ago. That sort of thing happens regularly in DoWII, but there were no complaints about it, and this game is looking like a close up DoWII. The cartoony graphics are also to be expected as SMs look increasingly ridiculous the more realistically they're portrayed.
It's very sad that Firewarrior wasn't given this much development love, as I would much prefer to play Tau or Dark Eldar in a game like this, but, regardless, this game looks incredibly fun.
Well, playing as Tau in a game like this would be awful on account of WS2! Even then we'd be getting a fluff abomination like Fire Warrior where one schmuck destroys half the Imperium. Space Marines are, fluffwise, one-man armies. They fit very well for this kind of game, and are the identifiable "face" of 40k.
Orks work well for this kind of game since there's hordes of them to chew through, and they provide some comic relief. Tyranids and Chaos work as well, since you can blast cultists/gaunts all day before fighting something dangerous like a Warrior or Chaos Marine for a mini-boss or what have you.
Brother SRM wrote:Well, playing as Tau in a game like this would be awful on account of WS2! Even then we'd be getting a fluff abomination like Fire Warrior where one schmuck destroys half the Imperium.
The WS2 problem is not insurmountable by any means. Nor is a solitary mass-slaughtering Firewarrior the only solution. But a Tau centered game is another subject entirely...
I don't deny that a SM works perfectly for this game. (That's probably why I'm excited to play it.) I'm just saying it's sad that the cooler, more interesting armies don't get this much attention.
Orks work well for this kind of game since there's hordes of them to chew through, and they provide some comic relief.
My gripe with Orks isn't just that they're overexposed as the default/minor antagonists in all 40 iterations. It's that I, personally, don't think their aesthetic meshes well in a sci-fi setting. But that's just my opinion.
If its half as good as gears (the shooting style looks very similar) I will probably get it. Man with portal 2, GoW 3 and this coming out, Imma be a poor man

Hah, I also have to buy a lot of art supplies and deck out my dark eldar army from not even a playable force to 1500 points by summer
Mewiththeface wrote:If its half as good as gears (the shooting style looks very similar) I will probably get it. Man with portal 2, GoW 3 and this coming out, Imma be a poor man
I think the shooting is only similar because both are third person shooters, or in Space Marine's case, third person action with a shooting element. Considering so much of Gears is based around shooting from cover instead of running and chopping, the shooting styles are only superficially similar. Gotta say though, I agree that this looks like a good year for video games.

Like even how it looks, the bullets traveling down range looks like gears. It has a very similar aesthetic.

Considering people are actually excited after seeing gaemplay, I'd figure it won't be! I don't recall anyone being especially excited after seeing Fire Warrior's gameplay before release. I did think the first level was pretty cool though.
Because if not, I'm fairly sure there will be plenty of copies around, and I'm all for waiting for some reviews and player feedback to see if this is a $59.99 purchase day of release, or wait for it to hit the bargain bin.

It's Relic/THQ, with input from Vigil Games doing this.
They've come a long way from the days of Fire Warrior, and I don't think I've played a dud from them lately.
To give you a good idea as to how the combat system will likely work, check out Darksiders.
I can't wait for this. Really hoping for 4 player co-op as the screens thus far have shown a four man combat squad. Although, I have been let down before (looking at you Republic Commando). Can't believe I'm getting this and Deus Ex in the same month
I must confess, I've really been looking forward to this game coming out for a sweet power armored avatar outfit!

I am with you man. Graphics are block and look like they have gone back in time when you compare other recent shooters like SOCOM4 and Black Ops and Gears of War. Are we supposed to believe that one marine is taking on the ork race? Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan of this but can't say I am that impressed with game play, story or graphics.

How do the graphics look bad? Black Ops doesn't look incredible, and Gears has a lot of texture pop-in problems. I'd say it looks just as good as either of those games, while maintaining a faster framerate with a LOT more going on at once. Black Ops has, at most, a dozen guys around at a time? Gears has about the same numbers. Space Marine has dozens of Orks, if not hundreds. If it looks 90% as pretty as other games while all those Orks are running around, I can't find reason to complain.
Also, you're a Marine captain. It's still kind of stretching what kind of damage you can do, but it works better for video game purposes than Fire Warrior where you're just, well, a Fire Warrior. Story we don't know too much of (but can't be as ham-fisted as Black Ops') and we can't say much about gameplay aside from "it looks cool/doesn't look cool" since nobody's played it yet.

For me I don't mind the graphics, nor do I have a problem with the space Marine captain running around slaying half a ton of Orks. I stated my opinion on the first page and I don't think it will be particularly well reviewed nor 'deep'.

It came out in 98 so it might take some finagling to make it run on modern computers. The Squad Command game on DS/PSP tried a similar approach but wasn't anywhere nearly as well received. Chaos Gate is fondly remembered by a lot of posters on 40k forums, but I myself have never played it. I did play the Eldar Panzer General-style game that came out around the same time though. It was alright.
Well I must say I am looking forward to another 40k game. I would like a bit more to it based on the trailer it looks awfully lean... that might be because they are trying to get it out and generate some income so that installments and others improvements can be added on... I wish there was a tabletop console based game with which to hone my skills.

Now that is something I would love to play. Or even a strategy style like Starcraft, Warcraft or Age of Empires. Although it could impact the sales of the actual models considering people would move to the video game aspect and forget the models. But I would doubt it would impact it too much. People like Warhammer for the painting, modeling and actual tabletop play. Then again kids and younger starter players would move to the video game. Or it could motivate them to paint and model, I don't know Im just rambling now.

What do you mean by it looking lean? Doesn't look any leaner than most action games.

Have you guys looked into Vassal 40k? It's a little difficult to attain but with some searching you can still turn it up. I'd really recommend it.
This game looks to be a fantastic step in creating some seriously good 40k console games. It really seems to capture the feel of warhammer what with the gothic architecture and very seems to have been very well researched with plenty of familiar 40k gubbinz.
I belive the game is supposed to have around 8 hours of gameplay, a little too short for my liking but acceptable nontheless.
That new trailer make the game look even better, having some obvious changes made since the last one.

Waaaaiiiiitasec- do you recall the name of that game? Sounds like something I'd be willing to work out a port for Windows 7 etc. for out of sheer geek love.

If it was the one about the Avatar of Khaine then it is Warhammer 40K: Rites of Battle.

All I'm saying by it looking lean is that it seems pretty basic 40k when the entire universe of 40k is huge and to me the game doesn't do it justice. And in looking at the trailer again it seems like they took AoBR and made a video game outta of it.

Well, the Horus Heresy might be a little much to introduce new players to the game! They haven't let on much yet about what the story's about, but they've confirmed Orks and Chaos, and there was old footage of Nids. I think there's enough potential there for something interesting to happen.
True true... I guess with the variety of different game types this is one that will probably get people interested and then they expand...to us regular players/gamers there is at least some to be desired.
With development costs of more than 20 million dollars, I'm just glad they are willing to take a step in this direction. If it's not all I'd ever dreamed of, I'd be willing to accept that with the understanding that it will bring greater future projects along.
That being said, I've yet to be disappointed by Relic's work thus far
Also, great MP news:
"All of the following multiplayer details are yet to be confirmed, but during our hands-on time the planned multiplayer will consist of 8 versus 8, Chaos Space Marines pitted against those loyal to the undying Emperor. Multiplayer will feature an XP progression, unlocking new items as your fully customisable Space Marine levels up. There will also be a Cleanse mode, co-op for up to a squad of five marines taking on wave after wave of enemies."
Doesn't look like there's any co-op campaign mode, so no way I can get my PS3 pals to purchase this only for 'cleanse mode' - still, I'll be getting it!

Agreed. I believe this game is designed for video gamers, and not necessarily tailored for the tabletop gamers. The game had a column in PSM3 magazine this month, perhaps showing the designer's desire for it to be a more mainstream game?
This game is looking like it's going to be even more ridiculously exaggerated and unlikely than Firewarrior... Of course, that didn't stop me from enjoying Firewarrior...
Probably will be getting collectors for 360 myself, maybe I'll get it on steam down the road depending on the community scene.

He isn't going to buy it for "survival mode"...
But hey, I'll still be buying it!
I dunno about that. They had been talking about story campaign since the game was announced.
I'll ask and see if I can get an answer.
Yeah, I thought this too. One of the big selling points [originally] was 4 player co-op in campaign, hence why in most trailers you got 4 marines stood together. I remember the survival or horde thing too. That WILL be awesome!
