Random project blog - Vessorine Jannissary, Erebus PDF, Deathwatch etc... (pic heavy) @ 2011/05/04 22:53:14

Post by: chrisyella

Hello,
Just starting up a blog which documents my (slow) progress

Vessorine Jannissary
legs: SM Scout
torso: Cadian with shaved off
head: half Catachan / half Necron
arms: Cadian
weapon: Cadian with shaved off, also cut down to represent a carbine

The idea of the half and half head is that I wanted to emulate a mask being worn by my Jannissaries (similar to the animal masks they wore when attacking Eisenhorn's residence in the trilogy).
Some more work is needed, in particular green stuff:
- mask bands to hold onto head; trying to emulate an ice-hockey mask
- pistol butts
- gap-filling

Be gentle, it's my first time doing a WIP blog

Hey there,

I'm doing a very similar thing for my new army using the Grey Knight's book. I've done mine a little differently, using the Necron Heads, pinning them above Cadian torsos and using Green Stuff to make neck protectors.

I must say, this guy is a solid start most definitely. The scout bits are exceptional for mixing with the Cadian kit. I rather like the look of the Lasguns you're going for here.

If you'd like, I can post a picture of my WIP when I get home to give you a bit of another style idea, but it's purely up to you. I don't wanna thread jack you

Keep it up,
-OM

@ObsceneMachine

Thanks mate! I was worried that the legs would be too bulky for the Cadian torso but it worked quite well. Also I made use of the SM Scout utility belts to cover up the gap between torso and legs.
I've got another 4 bodies made up, but with no heads... pics will follow shortly.
Please feel free to post a pic, I would like to see what you've made. It will definitely help with the creative process!

Hey Chris,

Posting these pictures from my phone, hope they come out well enough to get the jist of it.

Still a WIP, will be doing more work after next week when payday comes around.

Also, posting from at work, let me know if you can't see the pictures and I'll repost them.

Thanks for sharing ObsceneMachine!
From what I can see of the backpack, I dig it. I'm still debating whether or not to add backpacks, maybe with later minis.. your work has made me think about it more seriously, thanks
If you don't mind me asking, what did you use for the helmet tube/piping? maybe guitar string..

Here are some pics of another little project, an Erebus PDF Squad. I like the book "Warriors of Ultramar" and thought that the PDF troopers mentioned in the book would kick ass especially after being trained by Ultramarines.
OK, nothing really has been changed with these minis just painting. I painted the weapons the same green which I thought would represent the Ultramarines 4th Co. the best.

I'll be posting some WIPs of the rest later.

Crisp painting, Comrade.

The tubing is indeed guitar string (being a guitarist, I have a surplud )

The backpack is just a chopped up and Green Stuffed Vox Caster, though I'm looking for an alternate source of backpacks as these are kinda few and far between. If you know any sources of backpack bits, I'd love to know about them.

With your heads, I take it you essentially saw both components in half and stick them together. Looks great, I may have to try it for ease, though it would lead to more bits.

Keep it up.

ObsceneMachine, here are a couple of ideas that I'm thinking about for backpacks or using as pockets or compartments of backpacks.
(NB: being that these are 1/35 scale they're quite large against 28mm... sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't )

Above sprue is from this kit:

Here are some pics of the other Janissaries:

and their weapons:

Hey Chris,

Those backpacks actually look ace. There's a local hobby shop around here that carries that range, so I may have to pick some up when I go for basing supplies.

Those legs match up quite well, again. The muzzle you've fashioned for that one las gun looks a lot like a G36. Have you thought about doing a different sight rail on them?

Random project blog - Vessorine Jannissary, Erebus PDF, Deathwatch etc... (pic heavy) @ 2011/05/07 02:09:30

Post by: chrisyella

Thanks again mate, here are some more backpack ideas, but these are 1/48 scale... I will get some comparison shots up soon.

Above sprue from this box:

In regards to the lasgun sight rail, I actually have thought about doing something different.
The current sight rail just doesn't do well with the shortened barrel... the main thing I don't want to do is have tech'd out guns for a bunch of mercenaries. No impractical sights or bayonet lugs, etc... just good practical weapons
Here is what I used for the las gun barrel and muzzle (I will get better pics of actually building one, it's really basic):

There is a cool hobby & model train store near my house, which also happens to be NEXT DOOR to my local gaming store.
I get my Strip Styrene and WW2 minis from the train store and my GW gear at the gaming store! Life is good
Also the model train store has some killer pigments and powders that I want to start experimenting with.. but I'm a newbie when it comes to hardcore weathering

******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Here are a couple of minis that I'm also going to be working on, my future Imperial Task force - a joint SM, Imperial Guard and Imperial Naval force with overall command going to the Inquisition.

Following are some group shots of the Erebus PDF troopers. So far only 3 have been completed and the rest are all in different stages of being WIP...
All up 15 minis, which equates to 1 HQ and 1 Troop choice.. the other Troop choice should be coming soon.

I usually paint in lots of 3 and try to keep the converting to the 3 currently being worked on, but this doesn't always work out
First off the 3 finished troopers are in the rear and the next 3 on the production line are in front. No major work except a small pistol change on the sergeant.

The next 3 and so on... some minor conversion work on the flame trooper, pistol & sword change for the lieutenant, GS'ing back strap & added holster for the vox operator, and semi-assembled heavy weapons gunner and rocket launcher gunner.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Following are some shots of my WIP Janissaries.

At the moment only 5 are being worked on with plans to do a whole lot more. The first 5 will be a veteran squad, and will probably be the only troopers wearing the Necron masks.. there is a reason for this which I'll explain in the up-coming fluff (just need to finish it first...)
As in the Eisenhorn trilogy, Janissaries are split up into clans and my clan is known as "Clan Denard". Denard is in reference to Bob Denard the old French mercenary and YES, there will be a future Clan Leader Denard..

First up, the weapons of the first batch of veterans; 3 carbines for troopers, las-pistol & sword for sergeant, and GL. (yes, there is one aquila that I still need to remove from the GL...)

Next up the minis; a sergeant and then 4 troopers.

Unfortunately no new pics of the Janissaries or the PDF troopers but I've got some WIPs of my Inquisitor which was shown a couple of posts back (also can be seen in the background of some of my other photos..).

The original mini had a different head, a bearded looking fop but it was hacked up badly when I thought the Inquisitor would look better with a scar running down his face.
Needless to say it didn't work out too good and the entire head was replaced with a plastic Imperial Guard head.

Thanks for the comments!

@SpaceDude, I was afraid of that.. without the arms it looks really over balanced but even with the arms it still looks over-balanced.
When I do finish the inquisitor there will be a quote to go along with the fluff and it goes something like this "Bath in the Emperor's holy light while I bath you in His holy fire!" or some combination of bathing in light or fire

@Rabid Ferret, Great picture!! Reminds me of Army of Two (which was used as inspiration). I tried to emulate the masks worn by the janisssaries when they raided Eisenhorn's house, even though they had animal or carnival style masks. The idea behind the Necron masks is that this Vessorine clan has been used in the past to conduct false-flag operations against the Imperium. The fluff will be coming soonish... ok maybe later than sooner

"Picture a man, going on a journey. He has stepped into a bubble and time has slowed to a crawl..."
Got some WIP shots of my Inquisitor and my Vessorine sgt, hope you like the slow progress.

The search light and banner pole are still in place, although some may notice that they are a little shorter.
I removed them both to see if I may be persuaded to leave them off but nope, I kind of liked them on (so I re-drilled the holes and re-glued them both )

Do not know if I will place any design on the white section of the knee-pad, maybe a vertical skeleton key ?
The knee-pad design will be replicated on one of the shoulder pads or on the armor of the power fist... still don't know yet, might take another month to find out

One arm has finally been glued on the Vessorine sergeant and some more paint has been placed on some parts.
The grenade is a bomb - ahahahahaha, get it?!? Hate the coloring, it was originally red but I got stupid with the purple and when a black wash was put over it the purple pretty much vanished... It will be returned to it's original color!

I really wanted to make the rope stand out, like some high tension para-cord and although needing some more highlighting, I'm pretty happy it!

** Sorry about the blurry picture **

A couple of group shots of the remaining Jannissaries (or is it Janissaries... jebus, I don't know)

Not real happy with the lighting of the pictures, was working in a different place than previously but pretty happy that I'm finally posting something
Got some updates of the Inquisitor and some shots of new miniatures. All photos are of WIPs.

Inquisitor WIP
Finally attached one of the arms, it's pinned like the other side (the power glove arm is the original one that came with the miniature). I put some washes on the armor, now just building the main color back up.
Eventually there will be a couple of thin scroll banners flying off the banner/antenna pole.

My Interrogator who will accompany the Inquisitor; her sword arm is a replacement (originally off of an old Harlequin mini) and following her an Eversor assassin.

Work has started on the overall leader of my Vessorine Janissaries - Clan Leader Umberto "Iron Man" Denard. He will be a counts as Straken, with a shotgun and a plasma pistol.
His robotic arm is still being built, pics will be forth-coming... The shotgun will hopefully look similar to a AA12 automatic shotgun (same weapon as Royce in the movie Predators and yes, I will be making a Royce who will be a counts as Marbo, MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA )

Here's my counts as Harker - haven't thought up a name yet but he will eventually have a back tattoo which will hopefully be a repatriation bond... yeah I know, that's pretty ambitious and I'm still trying to figure out how to pull it off.. something will come to mind though. Oh yeah, not all my Janissaries will have the face masks...

Erebus PDF sergeant; bolt pistol replaced and a crappy rock on the base.. hehe, it sucks but I'm thinking of re-basing all my PDF troopers with snow bases.

Inquisitor WIP
Have attached the other arm and think that he is looking quite good This gun is much more suitable for the Inquisitor rather than the original; some bolter/lasgun combination...
I'm quite proud of the knee pad (though still undecided about what to put on the white half...) and this pattern/design is being replicated on one of the shoulder guards.
Still finishing up the armor by bringing up the main color, while leaving the cracks and so forth... blah blah blah

More to follow sooner rather than later this time

Did a little bit more work on the Inquisitor, in particular finishing off the armor and now starting on the little odds and ends (i.e: light, skulls, gun, hair, etc...).
Still haven't decided what to color the storm bolter, the voices in my head will soon come up with an answer.. they're usually right

The shoulder guard which replicates the knee pad is almost complete, just have to finish off the scroll and come up with something to write on it

Also I'll be adding some banners soon to the antenna pole.. long thin banners similar to the ones used by knights of yester-year.

Following are some WIP shots of some minis that I'm working on, all my work is started the same way; white primer than badab black wash, then whatever the brush feels like using
Eversor

Storm Trooper

Veteran Sgt

Apothocary

Vanguard

Terminator

Fluff coming soon and some more WIPs, maybe even a finished mini soon.
Take it sleazy people!

No dramas Rogue Wolves, here you go buddy;

The back half of the heads are Catachan (command and regular troopers), I find that these heads fit the IG torsos very well. Also the Catachan ears are really well defined, so they can stand out when painted (I'm currently making a vox operator with the head below so ignore the ear comment ). The SM and scout heads are too big for the torsos even after shaving off the face.. and Cadians have their helmets on.
First thing I do is drill a hole to pin the head to the torso, it's also easier to handle the head this way when shaving.

When shaving off the face, I turn the head upside down and cut down. Please be careful when doing this... you don't want Kevin Spacey "Se7en" finger tips.
I'm not too concerned about getting too close to the ears (or ear phones in the example below), the file will be used to remove any unwanted face.

After the face is off I get to work on the actual face mask/ballistic mask, the front half of the heads (the masks) are regular Necron warriors..
(NB: the clamp is plastic, so won't damage the head at all )

When cutting the Necron head, cut at a slight angle from the jaw out to the top of the head (along the serated edge, or cog pattern on the head as shown below..)

After the cut has been made and the ball at the back of the Necron head is removed...

Now trim the cheeks to make them a little more rounded and do the same with the chin. Also run the file across the top of the head and face to hide those two ridge lines...

Play around with the front and back halves and use some guess-tamation as to determine how much to remove and where... as you can see I still need to shave off some from both halves.

OK, the next step is to attach the back of the head to the torso. I trim the pin (i.e: paper clip) and drill a hole in the torso, then attach the head...

On this angle, you can see that I've been filing down the flat section to get ready to attach the mask. Still a bit to go...

Side by side, they are almost ready to be joined in unholy plastic matrimony (this will be coming in my next post, I just have to clean up the mask and head a little bit more... the ear phones are a little difficult to get round)

Here's a shot of the tools that I used, pretty simple job really. The only draw-back is the knife work.

Also here's a little tip that might be beneficial to some people - if you don't have plastic clips, you can use normal needle nose pliers which are wrapped in tape to protect your miniatures (both plastic and metal).
Got this great tip from a GW "How to..." manual.

Phew, I was nodding off hard last night and couldn't remember if I posted or not!
Here's the second part of the head WIP and also continuing with the vox operator kitbash from my previous post, going at a nice steady pace

I've continued shaving off the face and the mask to get a better fit and have come up with the following...

(pretty much removed as much face as possible to make sure the mask will be sitting flush with the ear phone)

Here is the finished head, the mask is sitting quite nicely on the face the ear phones seem to be in 'sort of' the right place...

Vox caster attached to back... main aerial/antenna has been cut off and will be replaced with a whip aerial/antenna

How I'm making my whip aerial/antenna; Strip Styrene!!!

when the glue dries on the aerial, I will attach and then upload pics!

Thank you for viewing!!!

No problem! I'm interested in seeing how your veteran(s) turn out.
To finish off the entire look I usually put a small piece of GS to emulate a band/elastic holding the mask, but with the vox operator there is already a head band (not really visible with the current photos...sorry)
Another small change I perform is remove the belt from the Cadian torso, I do this because the SM scout legs have a utility belt already there.

OK, here's the finished aerial.. not really what I was going for and I don't know if it goes with the other round aerial/antenna

Thanks for looking!

Been looking forward to this update, as it deals with more of my Janissaries!
Since the last time I posted I've performed a minor change on the vox operator (he still has no arms though...) and have been looking for some acceptable arms for this miniature. The look I'm trying to go for is of a signaller/vox operator catching something on his headset and pausing to understand what is being broadcasted... one of his arms will be cupping his headset and the other arm will be carrying his weapon.

Vox operator (first version)
- when first assembling the vox operator, I made the mistake of gluing his body over his pistol holster but apart from that mistake everything else is fine.

Vox operator (new version)
- upper torso was removed and then reset but this time with the top of the holster visible

A little work has also been performed on Clan Leader Denard (my overall commander), his robotic arm has been added as well as a small strap which holds his close combat weapon.

Last but not least my veteran Janissaries
There are a number of group shots which currently show 5 veterans in various stages of WIP...

Thank you all for viewing my project blog, I've got some Erebus PDF updates coming and also a Uriel Ventris mockup which I'm excited about!!

Thanks for the comments and for viewing my blog (or plog)!!

@Llamahead, more is coming also in case you're interested I use the following website for a lot of inspiration on paint schemes; http://www.onesixthwarriors.com

@Rogue Wolves, I really want to see what you come up with if you do any =][=munda work (it sure is fun typing =][=munda, hehe)
I've also been thinking of using different plastic heads for masks, like beast-men, maybe some plastic daemons, plastic skeletons, or maybe even GS (but my GS-fu is not so good, only gap-filling at the moment )

---

Because we are on the topic of the Janissaries I will do some explaining on what I'm trying to do and also some of the ideas behind the minis and future army.
The army is a Vessorine Janissary clan called "Clan Denard". It's leader is based on the mercenary Bob Denard with the army based heavily on the companies; Executive Outcomes, Sandline, and Blackwater. There are also some classic movies and video-games which contain mecenaries used as a basis as well.
The whole army will include the following;
- Command section; counts as Straken + squad and advisors
- Veteran squad #1; counts as Bastonne + squad
- Veteran squad #2; counts as Harker + squad
- Penal Legion squad #1; based on "Predator" movie
- Penal Legion squad #2; based on "Predators" movie
- Guardsman Marbo counts as; based on "Commando" movie
- Infantry platoon; this will be the main army based on the companies mentioned above
Yep, it is ambitious but I'll take a bite

Here are a few pictures which have influenced my thought process; the first two are of employees of Executive Outcomes while the last photo is a uniform scheme I'm really liking...

Still working on the fluff for the various squads and characters, but I promise these will come along with the miniatures.

***********************************************************************************************************************

In regards to my Erebus PDF work, there is a greater goal I'm working towards also; an Apocalypse army based on the troops mentioned in the novel "Warriors of Ultramar".
The troops I'm thinking of including are as follows;
- Ultramarines 4th Company
- 933rd DKoK
- 10th Logres
- Erebus PDF
Yes, like the Vessorine Janissary project it is very ambitious but I'll give it a go

In my previous post I mentioned a Uriel Ventris WIP - at the moment he has no arms and to be honest I'm still not 100% sure on what arms to use; should his sword arm be left or right decisions, decisions...
The little blob of GS is supposed to be his white rose of Pavonis award/brooch/etc... and will be better visible after some white paint and a badab black wash!!

Take it sleazy people!

Thanks Rogue Wolves, glad you like him!
To be honest I kind of wish he was true scale because when he is side by side to the Imperial Guardsmen, the proportions aren't right however I'm not comfortable with that type of conversion just yet.. maybe a future plan.
I've finally got around to putting arms onto Ventris, and in the end a bolter in the right hand and a power sword in the left. I don't really see Ventris as being right or left handed, he would train to be both a rightie and a leftie

Got a Pasanius and a couple of 4th Co. brothers in very early stages of WIP, these will be forthcoming.

******************************************************************************************************************

Performed a little more work on Clansire Denard (yes, yes, I shall be calling him by his 'proper' title now... )
Attached his hand and decided that I didn't like the shotgun that he had, so I hacked it up and am in the process of rebuilding him a new shotty!

A little more work; in the form of some GS to build up the back of the shotgun, and it'll be ready for priming!

On the subject of Vessorines, a little bit of work was done on the vox operator. In particular his arms have been added, but there is some GS work on his elbow and his carbine needs a barrel.
(please excuse the dirty fingers, god only knows where they've been )

******************************************************************************************************************

There will be more in the next couple of days, in particular some painting WIP of the Erebus PDF!!
Thanks for viewing

Thanks Rogue Wolves! The shotty has turned out quite nicely, however I haven't finished it yet, let alone start on any GS... soon though.
I'm VERY glad there are people out in the interwebs that enjoy my work, though I am very sorry for being soooooo slow

Rogue Wolves, following are some shots of a little side project that was inspired by one of your Fallen threads - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/404052.page
The squad I'm currently working on is one which is centered around Cypher. Even though I think that Cypher would attract Fallen members, I think he would also attract other renegades as well. This particular squad will have 3 Fallen members (Cypher plus 2 minis) and 2 SM renegades formerly from the Ultramarines ( ) and Imperial Fists ( ).
Why these two Chapters ?
BL had a big part to play (as always); the Ultramarine renegade fluff will be based around a brother who was sent on a death oath (like Ventris and Pasanius), and the Imperial Fist renegade fluff will be based around a brother who disobeyed a direct order to retreat in battle.

First off, a group shot (with Cypher to the very left of the image) - all minis have been primed with white, then a badab black wash on armor sections, and a devlan mud wash on the robes.

Following are some WIP shots of my Erebus PDF troopers; in particular the sergeant and the overall commander of the Erebus PDF troopers. The overall infantry platoon is coming along nicely, I've managed to get paint on all the minis which were bare in the previous posts. There were 6 in all that needed to be put together and/or base painted; commander, missile launcher team (gunner & loader), flame trooper, vox operator, and heavy bolter gunner. The images for everything except the commander will be forth-coming. Also Satan Claws payed me a visit and apart from coal in my stocking I also received some snow effects, so the 3 complete troopers will be re-based with the snow effects and any mini finished from now on will be snow-based. All PDF, Imperial Guard and SM minis in this Apoc army will be snow-based.

Sgt (front) - finished the first highlight stage, now working on the 2nd stage of highlighting (in particular the weapons and the coat)

Sgt (side 1)

Sgt (side 2)

Sgt (rear)

Commander (front) - just started the highlighting process so mostly base colors with some washes (usually have 2-3 highlighting stages depending on the mini )

Commander (rear)

Following pictures are from another small project I'm working on... Deathwatch Kill Teams
I've got some fluff in terms of background and names but the background will have to wait until I've finished the minis names will be included though!

Deathwatch Terminator - Brother Hraccus (Dark Angels Deathwing)

Deathwatch Chaplain - Chaplain Lucien (Black Templars)

Deathwatch SM - Brother Simeon (Imperial Fists)

Deathwatch SM - Brother Artoul (White Scar OR Raven Guard)

Golly those conversions are nice!

What color greens you use for those (I didn't notice if you posted)? That is a look I want to get with my stormtroopers but just can't seem to get it right.

@sparkywtf; Thanks for commenting! The following washes and colors are used for the green lasguns: Badab Black (w), Thraka Green (w), Goblin Green, Scorpion Green, and Sunburst Yellow.
I've got a few more Erebus PDF in various stages of WIP so I'll be sure to take more photos of the stages of the lasguns. Also gives me a reason to post more!

@Rogue Wolves; Thanks for your comments! I have a funny feeling that you will finish your project before me .. Brother Artoul is from the SM Vanguard Veteran squad (the old metal ones, not finecast). The lightning claw is from the SM Commander and there is a metal Deathwatch shoulder pad.

In my previous post I mentioned that I had received some GW modelling snow and I wanted to apply it to the 3 completed Erebus PDF troopers. So I did

Thanks Rogue Wolves, the greens and blues really seem to like each other and now with the snow base it makes the colors pop even more.

Thanks for the colors on the lasguns!

They really do pop. I like the green armor on the Jannissary too. I tried something similar with some browns last night, I think I finally found a scheme I like for them. Now to see if a bright green lasgun will work with them.

Snow looks great on them too. Really completes that great cold feeling (now if only we could get some real snow here)

I'm a big fan of the Jannissaries in particular. What will you be playing them as?

Keep up the great work!

Thanks for commenting and viewing!

@sparkywtf; No problemo, in case you're interested the janissary armor is Gretchin Green (Foundation), the strapping is Camo Green, and the BDUs are Catachan Green. All have a Badab Black wash then the respective greens re-applied on the raised sections. Nothing to difficult

@Rawson; I get bored very easily I will be playing the janissaries as Imperial Guard (sorry if you meant something else, I'm still fairly new to the wargaming aspect of the hobby). Got fairly big plans for this army, my only goal at the moment is to finish a complete unit or troop selection.

******************************************************************************************************

GS 'd Clansire Denard's shotty and it is now complete. Also primed and washed the little bugger so he is ready for base colors!!
First up, some shots of the GS work:

Then primed (front):

(rear):

Finally a black wash to pick up detail when I apply the base colors (front):

(side):

(rear):

(side):

Got some more work to do on the vox operator, then work will start on a heavy weapons team.

******************************************************************************************************

Uriel Ventris is in the same stage of Clansie Denard; he is GS' d, primed and washed!!
Here is the GS shot; I wanted the cloak to appear that it is over a small portion of his helmet (hopefully I pulled it off...)

Howdy, been working on assembling the janissary veteran squad #1 and have finally got 10 minis
I originally had 6 janissaries in various stages of WIP (i.e: sgt, 3 troopers, grenade launcher, & vox operator) but now I can add the remaining 4 (i.e: heavy weapon gunner + loader, 1 trooper, & melta-gunner).
NB: following minis are in various WIP stages

First up, the heavy weapon team; heavy bolter gunner & loader/spotter
- heavy bolter gunner (side)

- heavy bolter gunner (front)

- heavy bolter loader/spotter (side/front aka nut shot!); eventually he will have ammo boxes between legs on the ground and one arm holding binoculars and the other arm will be pointing in a direction (most probably directly ahead...)

Next up, the trooper/ammo holder for the grenade launcher (the ammo holder angle is pure fluff - I wanted to put something extra on this guy...)
- (front)

- (rear)

Finally the melta-gunner; this is a conversion using the Necron warrior rifle and a SM melta-gun front.
This conversion will have a robotic arm (similar to Clansire Denard)

I'll get a group shot in the next couple of days; I'm excited, a partially assembled 10 man squad !!!
Need to get some more heads before I can finish these so that is an excellent excuse to visit the FLGS...

*********************************************************************************************************************************

Work has begun on another member of Clansire Denard's command squad; the vox operator.
He will eventually have a beret similar to his commander and of course a shotgun (although his shotgun will be a little different to his commander's... )

I'll admit work has not started on the remaining members of the overall command squad, still trying to figure out how to kit out the squad... it will hit me soon, just need to peruse the other blogs for ideas to stea... oops borrow

On the topic of Clansire Denard and his command squad, work has also begun on their transport; a chimera with an autocannon instead of the lascannon. This is a conversion using the FW model as inspiration
I've used the SM predator auto-cannon, will eventually either drill circular holes/vents or cut rectangular holes/vents...

Eventually there will be a heavy stubber and a search light, but these will come when the main body has been built.

*********************************************************************************************************************************

Here is a little bit of work on my Deathwatch kill-teams... nothing more than 2 more minis I'm afraid...

Deathwatch SM - Brother Bernadi (Blood Angels)

Deathwatch SM - Captain Fentor (Mortifactors)

*********************************************************************************************************************************

Thanks to all who have been viewing, keep it sleazy people
(man I love orkmoticons!!)

Very glad you're liking the conversions, there should be more WIP in the next coming days. Also I'm hoping to get some PIP shots as well!!

************************************************************************************************************
One of my older posts on the first page mentioned some comparison shots between some 40K plastic (& metal) and other manufacturers' plastic. Well I've finally gotten the comparison shots done and uploaded so here goes...
First off I will show what two other kits I've used for different pieces, the image of the kit will be in spoiler boxes...

1/48 scale kit
Spoiler:

1/35 scale kit
Spoiler:

- oil drums; the green oil drum is 1/48 scale and the grey oil drum is from the 40K IG Chimera kit

- heavy bolters (top --> bottom); 40K IG heavy weapon kit, 40K SM Scout Landspeeder kit, 40K SM Scout squad
this has to do with a future post I'll be putting up, at the moment I just wanted to get the idea out there that there are different sized weapons for different sized races/peoples/sub-humans/SM/etc...

Thank you kind sir, you are a gentleman and a scholar!

Before an update on some of the janissaries from the last post, a WIP of an objective marker (fuel dump) showing the size comparison between a mini and some 1/48 scale pieces

Some work was done on the heavy bolter team; both the gunner and the spotter.. Still missing the heads, but hopefully these should be coming soon.
The gunner is ok, the heavy bolter is pointing up though... not really shooting the moon kind of thing but you can tell the trajectory is raised, oh well
(side)

(front)

(other side)

The spotter is ok also, the arms are in the position I was hoping for
(front)

(side)

(back)

(other side)

A little bit of shotgun work was done on Denard's vox operator, still not finished but slowly getting there.
(front)

(side)

And finally a little addition on Denard; the inspiration was the character Captain Colby in Apocalypse Now;
- the first assassin to go after Kurtz and who Willard later encounters in Kurtz's compound, Colby has a scalp on his shotty but I didn't want to go that extreme

...and now a little group love
firstly, the slowly expanding Command Squad comprising of Clansire Denard and a vox operator.

secondly, the slowly assembling and painting Veteran Squad Barlowe of Clan Denard

***********************************************************************

Thanks for viewing my blog/plog! Aiming to get some painting done in the next couple of days, while waiting for the Catachan heads. Hopefully get some Erebus PDF shots up...

Thanks for the comments and the views! Helps with the motivation (sometimes... )
Got a small little update, but unfortunately haven't gotten any more Catachan heads so as a result the remaining janissaries are not fully assembled

@Rogue Wolves; I'm very happy that you're still liking the spotter, he's almost finished and while waiting for the heads I'm adding some accessories to him; a backpack with extra ammo belts (sorry, no photo of that this time...oops) and his weapon

@Andrewgeddon; Thanks for checking out my blog/plog I would like to see what you come up with for your friend's campaign.
Oh yeah, don't forget to bang your head (man, there needs to be a head-banging orkmoticon; whipping a massive mane of orkish hair, throwing up the sign of the horns...)

@Avatrass; Thanks for commenting! I like the idea of putting some Vessorines in different armor instead of regular IG carapace. I will definitely do this with other members of the clan that I'm building up!
One thing which has been nagging me about this squad since reading your comment, is that if I want to play them as veterans with the grenadier option they must look the part, especially in the armor department... Been thinking of 'unveteran'ing these guys and have them as a type of armored fist squad and then modelling some new veterans with proper armor that reflects their grenadier status... oh well, back to my notes/lists (but this is actually a good thing )

*********************************************************************
As mentioned above I've been working on adding some accessories to the remaining janissaries while waiting for their heads, but haven't been able to decide on a spot for the spotter's weapon; across his legs or against his outstretched leg
1). Across the legs

** This one is my favourite as it appears that the weapon is more reachable in this position than the next position...**

2). Against the outstretched leg

*******************************************************************************
Have performed a little bit of work on my objective marker (i.e: the fuel dump)
- added a camo netting over the barrels,
- added a little siphon from one barrel to one of the jerry cans

Primed shots;

*******************************************************************************
Also work has started on Clansire Denard's personal bodyguard (counts as Nork Deddog);
(front)

(rear)

*******************************************************************************
Again want to thank you all for the comments and for viewing, sorry for the lack of updates - I know I'm slow

I just found this post, I must say I love your Jannissaries! The first thing I thought of was 'Army of Two' and the crazy masks you can get in that game. Would you consider making some different designs on the masks, maybe for commanders/sergeants? I think you could really get creative in that respect while still tying them into the rest of the army because they'd all have to same color armor. Just a thought, I look forward to more!

Thanks for the comments and for viewing! I know I sound like a broken record saying that but it really is appreciated... now after saying that it makes me want to be less of an introvert and comment more in other threads.

@Lextheimpaler; I'm really happy to hear you're liking what you see! Please stay tuned as I've got some more ideas to bring into reality, for example; ornithopter scouts (counts as scout sentinels)
By the way your signature is epic

@Sock; Again I'm happy to hear another person liking what they see, thanks! Army of Two was definitely an inspiration as were ice hockey masks. On the topic of ice hockey masks, Google "ice hockey goalie mask" and check out some of the painted designs on some... absolutely awesome! Initially I wanted to use some type of plastic animal to try and mimic what was described in Eisenhorn - Malleus but it was not very easy to get that type of thing. The Eldar Harlequins have some pretty cool masks, I do have some metal Harlequins but I'm not ready to cut those up yet... maybe do some GS imprints
In regards to putting designs on masks to denote command elements I have considered putting a single red vertical line going down on one side, but that's a little bit too obvious as a rank marking. My fluff has these troopers as battle-hardened and they would not unnecessarily point out their leadership to enemy snipers. Maybe something on their belt buckles or something less obvious... I'm open to any ideas if you have any!

@Rogue Wolves; Thanks for your input mate, it definitely helps with the thought and assembly process I'm definitely going towards having the lasgun on the lap although it does hide a large portion of his lower body, but that's the price I guess. I'll try to get some shots of his back with the new pack and the now attached ammo belts in the next couple of days (I feel guilty for not having any pictures in this post sorry bud ). I still definitely want to see the Necron face mask on your Necromunda gangers when they are ready!

@Galorn; Thanks for stopping by and for your input! Please remember that any and all ideas that you may see come with a five finger discount Steal away buddy!!

***********************************************************************************************************
OK, been working on some fluff for Clan Denard so here's Part #1 - the very early years:

Clan Denard is a Vessorine Janissary clan occasionally hired for mercenary work by the Inquisition, in particular Ordo Xenos. Nothing is really known
about the namesake Clansire Denard's birth parents, but what is generally accepted is that he was sold at a very young age by his father, into a mercenary
contract with a Tau caste leader. The Tau have always liked the fighting prowess of the Vessorines and have previously employed other clans' services, but
this contract was slightly different to others in the past... At first it was thought that this was young Denard's initiation into the mercenary world & way of life
but all was not what it seemed... the Tau wanted to use the child as a genetic experiment. The Tau incorrectly thought that the Vessorine's legendary fighting
ability was in their DNA and maybe it could be incorporated with the Kroot to produce a new Kroot species. In order to hide the true nature of Denard's contract,
the Tau introduced the young child mercenary to other soldiers of fortune that they employed. Young Denard gained a wealth of knowledge of different fighting
styles; both armed & unarmed forms, and grew into a very educated young man well-versed in the art of war. When time came for his consumption an old
Kroot shaper was selected to spend time with Denard and gauge how ready he and his genetics were. Certain tasks and questions were put before Denard
but to the surprise of the Tau, the Kroot shaper indicated that nothing would be gained by assimilating Denard's DNA. The main reason for this was that certain
answers to questions, pertaining to brotherhood, family and kinship, appealed to the old Kroot's strong notion of family/brood bonds. The old shaper refused
to allow the consumption of Denard and informed him of the real reason he was sold into his contract...

More to follow in Part #2 - the early years, hopefully coming soon
***********************************************************************************************************

@chrisyella

I see what you mean about not wanting to point out who your commanders are to enemy snipers. I was thinking if you still wanted to do a design or two on the masks you could do something that ties into the weapon the model is carrying or the role they're supposed to be playing. So like some flames for someone carrying a flamer, maybe a single red dot or bullseye on the forehead of a sniper,etc. Just some ideas!

nice fluff, unfortinaty im not too familiar with tau, but it doesnt sound far fetched, which is great.. i do like socks idea, but only the sniper one i think would look cool, as flames on the mask (unless done perfectly) would look too crouded in colors if you understand.. but i think if you did add some character to the mask, it should be in the form of a scar from a diflected blow, or maybie a scorch mark (burnt black) on a flamer where he got flamed or something

Howdy all, BIG thanks for the replies and for the views! Motivation has been kick started and finally doing some painting.
Been pretty lazy for awhile but now seem to be getting out of this funk, which is damn good.

@ghostmaker, thanks for the kind words! Hopefully will have some good updates in the next coming weeks; a plethora of images and ideas

@Sock, I really like those ideas and am pleased to say I've finally decided on placing markings on the janissaries. Haven't really decided on everything yet but the main thing is I've got a base to start from (lord knows I change my mind frequently enough). I've jotted down some ideas below, let me know what you think!

@Rogue Wolves, I'm glad that it doesn't sound too far fetched. I'll be honest and admit that I'm not familiar with the Tau or Kroot either, but I've been hitting up the Lexicanum and expanding my horizons. In regards to iconography, I've finally decided on adding some and as mentioned to Sock, I've got some notes below outlining what I've been thinking about. Likewise, let me know what you think!

<**********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************>

Vessorine Janissary - Clan Denard
Denoting a Janissary's rank and specialty at first wasn't something that I considered or cared about. I wanted the tattoos to outline what a Janissary has done but what happens when they are covered... oops...
Now, after some suggestions, I've really warmed to the idea of putting something on the outside of uniforms.

Following are some doodles which are being considered as rank and unit markings, as well as some tattoo ideas for this particular Vessorine clan (explanations will be under the pic )

- Knife with bone handle; denotes a veteran squad member, worn on the right shoulder pad
- Animal skulls; denotes particular squads, worn on the left shoulder guard
- Shoulder epaulettes; denotes a veteran squad leader, this is a tattoo only
- Solid bars/chevrons; denotes leadership throughout the squads, incorporated with the animal skull squad markings
- Stylized V's; something which denotes that these soldiers are Vessorines
In the top right hand corner of the pic, is a mock-up of a repatriation bond; ambitious yes, is it possible though

A lot of inspiration for the Vessorine tattoos came from a film called "Mark of Cain" - it's a documentary on Russian criminal tattoos and the meaning that they carry inside of Russian prisons.
(NB: please note that I'm not an expert on any of these things, my only knowledge is what I've read online... if I've offended anyone by what I've drawn, let me know and I will remove)

Warriors of Ultramar - Uriel Ventris (Ultramarines 4th Co.)
Work is slowly progressing on the Ultramarine contingent of the Warriors of Ultramar
Nothing too special though, Cpt. Ventris is getting his base colors on after his initial washing. Not shown completely is his cloak which is completely green... does that make sense?

Work has continued on the other Ultramarines; in particular Pasanius and Learchus. Shots of these will definitely be in the next update.
In the above picture there are two Ultramarines in early PIP; to the left of Ventris, these are not my versions of Pasanius or Learchus.

Slowly picking up and working on some Erebus troopers, nothing to report except getting some base colors on some minis. Shots of these will also be in the next update.

Objective marker - fuel dump WIP
Nothing really too exciting here other then some progress on the fuel dump

Deathwatch - Brother Simeon
Again, nothing too exciting apart from showing some progress on a Deathwatch member... highlighting (or lowlighting ) black really does suck.

Behind Brother Simeon are other members of the Deathwatch which are being worked on; from left to right ---> Brother Hrracus, Captain Fentor, and Brother Bjorndal

<***************************************************************************************************************************************************>

Thanks again for the comments and the views, C & C is more than welcome! (This sounds stupid but I pretty much just found out what the C's stood for... told you I was slow)
Also, listening to the Detroit Grand Pubahs while typing this is not a good idea... I've re-read this reply about 40,000 times now and I feel like a sandwich too

1) Ultramarines ( )
2) Vessorines ( )

Warriors of Ultramar - Ultramarines 4th Co.
As mentioned in the previous post, I had started work on Sergeants Learchus and Pasanius but didn't get around to taking a photo of either... so here they are in all their WIP glory!
My idea/vision/version for Sgt. Learchus was pretty much made from one quote in the book "Warriors of Ultramar". (which I will edit here when able too... - [ TO DO ] )
The quote references Learchus as being a very good training sergeant and how I thought to convey that image, was to have him look like he is reacting to something that the auspex has just blipped!

Comparison shot of Learchus (L) and Pasanius (R); using a pair of terminator legs from the Dark Angels accessory sprue as a base. Eventually Pasanius will get a converted heavy flamer from the Imp Guard command sprue.

Vessorine Janissary - Clan Denard
Below are some progress WIP shots of a new style of janissary I have mocked up. I have included the inspiration below the mock up shots.

Spoiler:

Thanks for looking!

Sorry to say @Rogue Wolves, got no updates on the new janissary but only to say still got plans to build a squad of them.
Took photos of some of what's on the table, between procrastination and gardening shenanigans, got a little bit done. Some photos are of pieces which have been in other photos before but now in more detail..
Really not trying to paint everything/anything for games (so some things might not be legal), don't have time to commit to playing but just want to explore the 40K universe, get inspired, paint and try to open my imagination for a bit... (and there's so many rules to understand )

Start off with some work on other Vessorine Janissaries; a 'count as' Nork Deddog and the start of a veteran squad with a 'count as' Harker in the lead.
Bodyguard for Clansire Denard ('count as' Straken; overall leader of my clan of Vessorines) will be armed with a ripper gun. He will have a blue & white, horizontally striped singlet (i.e.:wife-beater), similar to those under shirts worn by Russian naval forces (i.e: a telnyashka and yes I googled that bastard while typing this ).

Below is the start of the veteran squad with 'count as' Harker, who will still be armed with his heavy bolter. The other veterans will be armed with a mixture of auto-guns and heavy stubbers. All members of the squad will have visible tattoos on their torsos and arms, that's why I selected Catachan bodies. A couple of posts back, there was a picture of some doodlings of some ideas for tattoos.. well, I've decided to place epaulettes on Harker's shoulders to denote his leadership and a large repatriation bond on his back. There won't be any of conversion on this mini, I really want to make the tattoos stand out.

The following veterans are in early stages of WIP, so please bare with me...
Veteran #1

Veteran #2

Veteran #3

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Next off the block is an Erebus PDF heavy bolter gunner, who's been in the background of a couple of other photos but now being worked on. The only conversion on this piece is the removal of the original ammunition magazine and the addition of a new one; a plastic one. The colors will match the other PDF troopers that I have already painted. The heavy bolter will also have that fantastic bright green

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

The next group of photos are all part of an Imperial Task force being led by the Inquisition (ordo xenos) with Space Marines, Imperial Guard, and the Imperial Navy all contributing members. Not really much more to add at the moment, haven't got my notes in front of me to type up anything but when I can find my notes (and manage to read them...) I will post up more.

Eversor - finally got around to placing on his arm and backpack. There will be another piece of this mini in the form of the owner of that severed head, but they will be on their own base.

Interrogator - repainting this mini, aiming to have the same armor color and weapon color as the Inquisitor.

Inquisitor - almost finished with this one. These two(2) photos were taken a little while ago and a few more things were completed on the gun (i.e: green casing) and prosthetic leg (i.e: keypad). So close now I can smell the finish, oh no... that's not the finish.

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Following are photos of the start of two(2) Deathwatch kill-teams. They will eventually be added to the Imperial Task force mentioned above (but not the only SM asset).
Deathwatch; Brother Bernadi (Blood Angels)

Deathwatch; Brother (Iron Hands)

Deathwatch; Brother (White Scars)

Deathwatch; Chaplain (Black Templars... I think)

Deathwatch; Brother Bjorndal (Space Wolves)

Deathwatch; Brother Fentor

Deathwatch; Brother Hrracus

Deathwatch; Brother Simeon

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

This is a small part of my home-grown SM chapter, the Retributors. Like mentioned above, I do not have my notebook close-by so I cannot add anything in regards to the back-story which I have come up with.
The colors will be some type of green (what the is it with green...) and a red right hand. Yes, like the Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds song. The red right hand will also be the chapter symbol.

Retributors; Company Chamion

*********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Finish off with some Chaos folk I've had for awhile but only now thinking of what to do with them. Eventually will have a decent sized army, but in the meantime I'm content with building it in pieces.. All three(3) have been prepared in exactly the same way as all the others; white primer and then a black wash (watered down) to pick up details.
Abaddon;

Chaos Lord #1;

Chaos Lord #2

Thanks for looking and have a good one

no worries, you at least showed some IG to give me my fix! But i must say your various mariney models (how ever unworthy of the glory of a guardsman ) look really great! I definatly like the various conversions you have on them, and definatly love that company champion!

I'm liking the designs you've come up with thus far, especially the knives and skulls which I think would look great on the masks of your Jannissaries. The heads with horns could work too, but those come off to me as something that Chaos-influenced IG would do, but the choice is yours. I've been working on some IG with masks too, and one mask I painted all gold, while leaving room for the eyes to show through. IMO it came out really well and helps him stand out on the battlefield. My masks are supposed to be more like a big middle finger to the enemy, though, as in the Guardsmen know there's no tactical advantage to painting their masks so they might as well have some fun with it.

Overall nice work and I'm looking forward to more!

@Rogue Wolves; got a couple of Erebus PDF troopers for your IG fix but unfortunately not any Vessorines this time
In regards to the company champion, it is made from the following parts: running body from Dark Angels upgrade sprue, back pack with skull vents from same sprue, and metal arms & sword combo from the SM assault pack (5 minis in total with jump-packs). There will be a bolt pistol added to the chain, some grenades, and a combat shield tied with rope on the back of the backpack

@Commissar41.0; all of my minis are started the same way - GW white primer and then a black wash, however I use a watered down version of Badab black.
I have three(3) different types of washes (left to right): Black Ink (very dark), Badab Black(darkened with Black Ink), watered down Badab Black

@SpicyBadger; Thank you sir! I was thinking some of my poses are static looking so I'm happy you think they are natural looking

@Sock; You are right about the heads with horns, they do look Chaos influenced and that's not the look I'm going for so I won't be using them now.. Thanks for pointing that out!
The gold painted mask sounds pretty good, especially if the character is a veteran or some type of leader. Have you seen the new Chaos renegades in Dark Vengeance ? They have some sweet looking masks which may serve as some inspiration

/*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************/
The first WIP shots are of the Erebus PDF heavy bolter gunner and his loader; the heavy bolter will be the same green that I'm using on the lasguns but I'm having trouble selecting a color for the front armor section of the heavy bolter emplacement... any ideas

/*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Next up are the Interrogator and the Eversor from the Imperial Task Force
The Interrogator is being repainted to match the Inquisitor's armor color, likewise her weapon matches the Inquisitor's storm bolter...

The Eversor had his black base coat painted on and he had a very quick dry-brushing just to pick up some details for some other paint work. Instead of the normal bone colored skull helms I've seen with other Evesor assassins , I've decided to give him a metal colored helm.
At the time of typing this, the sword arm is now in a different position because I accidentally broke it and had to re-position

/*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Finally some shots of some Ultramarine 4th Company members.
Ventris has had his base colors applied and he is now ready for some detailing.

SM Trooper #1 has had most of his base colors applied and is waiting to have the base colors finished.

SM Trooper #2 has had his base colors applied and is now waiting for 1st step of detailing.

Thanks for looking and hopefully will have more to show next time !

Howdy y'all, got some photos of my WIPs.

First up from the Imperial Task Force the Interrogator I've been working on; in the previous post she had a Rotting Flesh base coat, now she's been given a green wash on the armor sections and a brown wash on her robe

Followed by a watered down black wash over the armor sections, I actually can't remember if I did the same with her robes... sorry my memory is pretty
(these were uploaded a little while ago but never posted in this plog...)

Finally I have started to highlight her armor, which is same as the Inquisitor that was shown in previous posts.

An Astropath is being added to the Task Force, here he is

Got a squad of Storm Troopers/Naval Security - these guys will make up part of the Naval detachment of the task force. I'll get a list up eventually
(all these were uploaded a little while ago but never posted in this plog...)
Sergent

Specialist

Trooper #1

Trooper #2

Trooper #3

/*********************************************************************************************************************************/
Next up the Ogryn bodyguard for Clansire Denard; pretty much just working on getting the base colors down and planned... (I have to admit sometimes when I start I don't have all the colors planned out )

/*********************************************************************************************************************************/
Finally some work performed on my dwarf; usually I place a watered down black wash before any colors but this time I put the orange down first to make it more vibrant (not have the black wash visible underneath the orange coat)

Followed by a flesh wash over the hair and face...

Finally a red wash just over the hair, with the facial details being based.

/*********************************************************************************************************************************/

Thanks for looking and remember to always rock out with your out

Howdy, got some more WIP shots of pretty much what was shown in the previous post.

First off the mark are the Interrogator and Astropath of my Imperial Task Force.
The Interrogator had the rest of her armor highlighting finished here since the last pictures.

Then I softened the armor with another green wash. Working on her robes now then her face and hair with the weapons last. Also I fixed up a small sand patch on the front of the base.

The Astropath was primed...

...then the first black wash and a purple wash over the flesh. Not doing the flesh like normal, this time I'm going for a very pale looking skin similar to what I think vampires would look like... The robe will be the same color as the Interrogator's robe, going for a cohesive look; Inquisitor has the same color armor as the Interrogator who has the same color robes as the Astropath...

/***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Next up a dwarf. He has had his base primed in these shots;

Here his face was washed with ogryn flesh (getting it ready for some highlighting now) and the base was washed; first with sepia then with devlan mud, finally with ogryn flesh on my rocks. Base isn't finished yet, I drybrush the out of it but that comes later

Put the base color on his leather gloves and boots (might be unable to see them in the following shots...sorry) and green washed his cloak, which will be green

/***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Something not seen for a couple of posts is an Erebus PDF heavy bolter gunner; the only work performed on him was finally deciding on painting the heavy bolter and armor section the same base green as all the other troopers' lasguns.
The heavy bolter carriage is being painted black (don't know about the damn seat cushion...) and will stop where the heavy bolter is being stabilized . The raised wings on the front section of the armor section will be metallic.

/***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************/
A while back I showed a primed & washed Abaddon with 2 Chaos Lords, well I started to put some paint over the primer and have the following WIPs of Abaddon.
He is going to be black and gold, no change there but instead of a sword he will have a war mace... still with the claw on his right arm though.

Good night and thanks for looking!

Howdy, I've got some more WIP shots that I'd like to share. Pretty much the same minis that were shown in the last couple of posts...

First off, from the Imperial Task Force no interrogator this time but the astropath and the storm troopers/naval security.
The Astropath has had his robe, skin, and rod/pole base coated...

...then the first wash on his robe and skin with all his 'jewellery' base coated gold.

The counts as Storm Troopers (Naval Security) had their uniforms, weapons and armor & accessories all base coated and the first wash was put on the weapon tips... after this the first washes on the uniforms and armor took place and some of their grenades were base coated also.
Sergent

Specialist

Trooper #1

Trooper #2

Trooper #3

/**************************************************************************************************************************************************************/

Next up, the dwarf has had his face finished, robe base coated and washed and his beard highlighted further...

...next up will be highlighting his chain mail and highlighting his leather gloves and boots (at the moment only the steel caps of his boots are visible). The robe will more than likely be finished last...

/**************************************************************************************************************************************************************/

Lastly, Abaddon has had some work done on his armor; in particular finished off the black base coating and performed a small portion of the gold trim.

Further washes were placed on the gold trim and now it is taking shape... I'm pretty happy with the result so far

Thanks again for looking, next post will have more WIP shots of the above minis and some old friends.

Good night all

Out of hibernation - let the painting begin !

Just got one mini which I've taken more WIP photos of; Abaddon.

The first layer of gold edging has been placed on, and his talbard has been based. Skulls have also been based and washed, also more washes have been placed on the base.

That's it for now, cheers

@Young_Logan; I wasn't aware that was the 300th edition miniature, thanks for letting me know!
I kind of forgot where I got him from but you have jogged my memory now... It was definitely from a White Dwarf magazine. Now I kind of wish that I painted his hair and beard white
Thanks for looking!

Little more WIP has been done; base coated the black armor on my Chaos Lords and now they are ready for their gold edging. Obviously they are going to be Black Legion CSM, hanging with Abaddon posted above.

Tomorrow will be some WIP shots of the Vessorine Janissaries and the Interrgator. Also some pictures of the completed Inquisitor. Cheers

@Sir Samuel Buca; Thanks for looking!

I mentioned in my previous post that I was going to show some more WIP shots of some Vessorines Janissaries, an interrogator, and a completed Inquisitor.
First up, the Vessorine janissary command squad vox operator; he's had his head put on and his bandana was shaved off to get ready for a GS beret (to match the Vessorine Commander - Clansire Denard). The shotgun was finished to match the Commander's shotgun. There is an aquila on the back of the vox unit which needs to be removed..

Vessorine heavy bolter gunner; the base has been built up and 1/2 his head has been put on. Need to attach the face plate... however I think I was a bit over zealous when shaving his face off as I think I've taken more off than I should have

Vessorine heavy bolter loader/spotter; the base has been worked on but not finished yet. 1/2 of the head has been added, now just waiting for the face plate. A pistol grip will be added to the empty pistol holster.

Vessorine trooper; 1/2 of the head has been added and now waiting for the face plate.

Vessorine melta-gunner; 1/2 of the head has been added and the tip of the melt-gun has been removed. A face plate is needed, pistol grip in the empty holster and a robotic arm..

(melta-gunner continued...)

/**************************************************************************************************************************************************************/

Here's the latest work on the Imperial Taskforce interregator; she's had her fleur-de-lis hightlighted and the combi-bolter's tip has been worked on too.

(interrogator continued...)

Following are shots of my finished inquisitor; the gun was finally completed and other smaller bits and pieces...

Time for bed now

Finally finished my Astropath, well the base is still a WIP but apart from that it's done.

(astropath continued...)

Some finished group shots; Inquisitor and Astropath, with paints in the background and another with a cheesy piece of white paper

Also been trying hard to finish this wench, her armor is difficult because there aren't many flat areas... plenty of edges but not as many flat places like the Inquisitor. Her robes will end up being like the Astropath.

...some group love, start of a nice happy family

Anywho, good night all

Here are some of my current projects;

First off the plate is my Ogryn bodyguard; he is still a WIP but since the last photos a number of things have been done.
In regards to his head and exposed skin, a flesh wash was applied straight over the flesh, the whites of his eyes were applied, and his teeth got a bleached bone base with a sepia wash. His boots were based in black with boltgun metal plates/armor sections. Grenades were based red (because everyone knows that red ones are thrown faster... ) and the spare ripper gun magazine based in boltgun metal. Any exposed rivets or buckles were also based in boftgun metal.

/*****************************************************************************************************************************************/

Next up are the Chaos Space Marine Lords; they are both still WIP with some more work performed since the last photos.
Gold edging was applied along with both their cloaks being based in graveyard earth. I was careful not to cover all the black washed holes in their cloaks as I want those sections to be left dark and torn looking. I am undecided on the fur linings of their cloaks, but definitely want the fur to be different on each lord.

/*****************************************************************************************************************************************/

Finally, here are some WIP shots of my own Space Marine Chapter; Retributors.

All (except the Apothecary and Tech-marine) have been based in Desert Yellow. The Apothecary is based in space wolves grey, this is my base color for my white armor. The Tech-marine was based in a maroon red, this will be my base color for his red armor. All their right hands are based in red. Snakebite leather for all their pouches (not the usual terracotta base color I usually do for leather pouches or straps...). Most of the skulls on the group (except Tech-marine) are based in gold to denote their status of being in the command squad.

Captain

Veteran Sergent

Standard Bearer

Apothecary

Tech-marine

Hope everyone had a good Christmas/New Year's break, I was busy with some of the little projects I've got going on...

First up is my Ogryn bodyguard; work has progressed on the wife-beater/singlet/telnyashka and overall I am happy with the result so far... Just the base colors for the stripes has been added, next up will be finishing the stripes, then a blue wash, then highlighting the stripes.
Yes, most of the front of his singlet will be obscured by his ripper gun but you will still be able to see it through the sides

Some progress shots of the stripes on the other side, and also progression on his back. Some shots also show a thinned black wash applied to the webbing, armor, boots, pants, pouches, etc...
Also started to pick out the rounds visible in the drum on his hip and highlighting the two red grenades.

/***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************/
I got around to finally putting masks on the last four(4) Janissaries that make up the 10 man squad.
Some little pieces to tidy up here and there, like the straps that hold the masks to the head, a couple of pistol grips in holsters, then they are ready for priming!

Trooper #1 (just needs a strap, also some cleaning up on his cheeks remains)

Trooper #2 (just needs a pistol grip in holster, also some work on his base)

Trooper #3 (some GS work to fill in the over-zealous shaving of his face... also a pistol grip in the holster)

Trooper #4 (melta-gun needs to be finished, also a robotic arm to signify that he has lost his original when his melta-gun previously exploded need to work on the base too)

Placed a GS beret on the command squad vox operator, he is almost ready for priming just need a water bottle I think...

/***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Finally, a new objective marker WIP (it is from the Games Workshop Battlescape Box)

Stay tuned, got some more shots to be uploaded shortly in particular some Space Marine WIPs
Thanks for looking!

I finally got around to uploading the pics of the above mentioned Space Marines

First up Brother Bernadi; a Blood Angel member of the Deathwatch.
Added a magazine to his bolt-gun and the front portion of a strap. To be added is the rear portion of the strap and a couple of grenades and pouches.

/***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Next up are four(4) new additions to the Ultramarines 4th Co.

Trooper #1 - nothing special, just some extra pouches and grenades

Trooper #2 - same as trooper 1; extra pouches and grenades

Trooper #3 - same as trooper 1; extra pouches and grenades

Veteran Sergent Learchus - a bit of work has been done on this guy. I really couldn't envision what Learchus' face looks like, even after reading the books over and over again... oh well, he gets a helmet
[ image deleted... ]

/***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Lastly a couple of new additions to what was my home grown chapter and the completed Company Champion.
I am not going ahead with the home grown idea anymore, the paint scheme was lame and the partial story I had was lame also... I will be posting up the new paint scheme in the next couple of days.

Dreadnought

Predator

Company Champion; added the pistol holster, shield, pouches, and the thingy on his power pack... sorry had a brain fart and can't remember the proper name for it

Take it easy, I 'm off to bed

Woo Hoo, some more updates
Today some WIP shots of an Imperial Naval officer that I am currently building... I didn't like the gloves he was holding in his right hand so I placed a sheathed sword on his hip and made it appear like he was holding the scabbard.
I cut a Space Wolves SM knife, thinned it out a little, and drilled a couple of small holes in either end of the cut pieces... then cut a small paper clip to help pin the piece in place;

Cleaned out the gloves and drilled out his clenched hand;

Very happy with the result (the fingers need fattening out when I do my GS work along with a small chain which connects the scabbard to his belt)

Again, very happy with the end result. Even looks straight from above

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/
I have uploaded some more pictures for my SM Chapter - I have decided to paint them up as Marines Errant.
Why .... because the split colour scheme looks awesome and the colors for my homegrown chapter were pretty lame.

The command squad; Captain, Apothecary, Vet. Sergeant, Standard Bearer, Co. Champion, and a Veteran

The base colors for my Marines Errant are Ultramarine Blue and Space Wolves Grey (which will become white).
Captain; his storm bolter has been swapped out and he is waiting for an eagle beaked power pack

Apothecary; no changes in any way and he is waiting for the apothecary power pack

Vet. Sergeant; no changes in any way and likewise waiting for a power pack

Standard Bearer; no changes in any way and likewise waiting for a power pack

Co. Champion; running legs, torso, head, bolt pistol holster, power pack, and shield from Dark Angels supplement sprue, arms with sword from metal jump pack assault boxed set

Veteran; robed body and head from Dark Angels supplement sprue

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/
So what I have going at the moment is as follows:
- Imperial Task Force (Inquisition, Imperial Navy, Space Marines)
- Warriors of Ultramar (Ultramarines 4th Co, Erebus PDF, DKoK, 10th Logres)
- Vessorine Janissaries (count as Imperial Guard)
- anything else which grabs my fancy

...and I am still slowly tapping away at it

Howdy all and thanks for looking

I will start off with the Naval officer featured in the beginning of the last post... A black wash was added over the white basecoat then a free-floating chain was attached to his belt and his sword scabbard.

The last remaining work will be some GS to fatten up the hand and fingers which are grasping the scabbard, then on to some painting.

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/
I haven't shown any painted progress shots of the following Deathwatch marines in a while, so here are a few pictures

Chaplain - Dark Angels; missing scope for the bolt pistol and the obvious missing power pack.

(rear shots...)

Assault marine; missing is just the jump pack.

(rear shots...)

Tech-marine (formerly the Heavy bolter gunner but the heavy weapon fell off and now it is being used for one of my other projects...) - his power pack is currently being buiilt up but he will eventually have a combi-weapon and power weapon

I have two new marines which I will be unveiling in the next couple of posts and a finished Blood Angel member.

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Marines Errant Dreadnaught - the whole piece was base-coated black... It's funny, all my vehicles are black base-coated but with no wash while all my people minis are white base-coated with a black wash.

There will be more Marines Errant in my next post so stay tuned!

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Next up are some progression shots of a couple of new terrain pieces; a minefield sign and a fallen soldier memorial.

(Batch #1)
Minefield Sign/Danger sign...

Fallen soldier memorial...

Memorial comparison with minis...

(Batch #2)
Danger sign...

Fallen soldier memorial...

Comparison between the sign, the memorial, and a random mini...

(Batch #3)
Base-coated sign... (I have to add some more sand to the bottom of the skull pile, it doesn't look right)

Base-coated memorial...

Next up will be a black wash on each of the pieces and then start painting!

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Vessorine Janissaries are up next, in particular some progression shots of one trooper and a little tutorial on adding some stowage to a Chimera transport.

Heavy weapon support tropper (this position used to be with the mini sitting down with the binos, pointing in a particular direction...but he was demoted) - finished adding and filing the GS around his head and also filled out the back of his armor.

Same mini but base-coated and awaiting it's black wash... (Please excuse the finger marks )

Chimera WIP... the main body was built up and base coated black. The turret was built quite awhile ago using a SM Predator autocannon.

Here is a little tutorial for adding extra tracks as stowage on the front of a Chimera;
#1). I found these little clips that were attached to pairs of socks that I bought. I thought that these clips are great

#2). Flip the track over and bend the ends of the clip around the track piece, trim the overhang...

#3). Repeat step #2 to add another strap...

#4). Just another shot of step #3 to show the sides of the clip...

#5). Glue the tracks to the front (or side) of the Chimera (or other tracked vehicle)...

#6). Glue the trimmed clips to the glued tracks...

#7). Another shot of step #6 to show the sides of the clips...

#8). A finished (unpainted) look of the new stowage...

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/

That is it for now but I will be adding more images and posts before the week is out!
Thank you all for looking and take care of yourselves

Well damn... that was a loooong week since the last post

Hello and thanks for looking at my plog!
Let's get things started by showing some progress on a servo-skull I have been working on. This little fella is attached to my Inquisitor and his retinue, I have a little story for him but that will come a little later..

Here are the parts that I used for this mini; the servo-skull was from the Imperial Guard Command Squad boxed set;

The base made up;

The skull attached (front);

(rear and top-rear);

primed (front) - some clean-up is required around the wires, also some GS is needed to make the centre wire a little more flush;

primed (rear) - some clean-up is required around the wires, also some more sand will need to be added on the base to hide the glue;

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/

Next up is a WIP of the warning sign I showed in the previous post. Since then it had it's usual black wash and then base worked on.
While working on the base it dawned on me that the back of the sign looked a little bare so I added some GS to give the sign some more character.. now waiting for some paint

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/

Coming up next is some WIP shots of my version of Pasanius from the Ultramarines 4th Co. novels.
He started life as some DA Terminator legs from the DA upgrade sprue and a body from a SM Scout;

With Captain Ventris (also WIP) as a comparison;

Over all, I am happy with the size difference. Some GS will be used to fatten him up and hide the gaps that are in the rear

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/

Finally some Vessorine Janissaries to finish off the post.
Up first is WIP shots of Commander Denard (my Straken counts as), I am in the highlighting stage with this mini now and should be finished with him shortly.
Unfortunately the talisman that he had at the end of his shotgun broke-off but it will be reattached (front);

(rear);

Denard's vox operator (Company Comand Squad), just starting with the highlighting on this fool

Normal squad level vox operator, he is getting his base colors on at the moment;

That's it for now

Thanks again for looking!

Howdy all and thanks for looking
Uploaded some pictures a couple of weeks ago but never got around to posting them up... I will split them over the next couple of posts (including some new shots), so I hope you enjoy them!

The last post was started with the servo-skull and this one will too...
I added some GS to fatten up the center wire and hide some glue, a little more sand was added to the base then I got started with the painting.

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Up next is a WIP of the warning sign; not much has been done apart from some base colors and some washes.

A couple more shots showing more of the base and the back of the sign (showing the GS work)

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/
Next we have the GS work done on the Naval officer's hand (fattening it up...). I also removed the lame-ass chain that I had there...

Primed up and ready for it's black wash then paint!

/**********************************************************************************************************************************************************/
We will wrap this post up with some GS work done on the dwarf; the axe is almost finished just need to file/shave the finger-prints

Take it sleazy peoples, I am off to bed

Howdy all and thanks again for looking

This evening I have some WIP shots of my version of Pasanius, still haven't finished him but the decade is still young !
The last time we saw him, he had his torso added but he was needing some GS...

...well that has been added

...right-hand side nub has been filed/cut down and pin added, also a power/back-pack

... and the left shoulder was cut-off and drilled for it's pin

...and bringing up the rear... his rear

Next up the components used to build up this SM;

The 'put-together' Pasanius

...still have some shaving/cleaning up to do

...spare promethium canisters

...helmet will be on right hand side (still to be added)

Together with Uriel...

Got a couple more odds & ends to add, in particular some grenades and a helmet. Maybe even a holster if there is room.

Well that's it for now, until next time take it sleazy people

To mark the start of a new page let's bombard it with some WIPs

I highlighted the servo skull not too long ago and it is closer to being done..

Up next, the warning sign... like the servo skull, some highlighting has been done but not quite finished yet..

Got a couple of vehicles inbound now; a SM Predator and an IG Chimera.
The Predator is a part of my slowly growing Marines Errant force. I am undecided on the turret though, don't know whether to keep it black, paint it gold or split it like the hull

The Chimera is still getting it's base colors down, nothing much else to add

The Ogryn bodyguard for the Vessorine commander finally got his arms... also primer, base coat, and washes on those arms

...some tattoos are planned, but still tossing up designs

Lastly, a new addition to the Vessorine family, a Jokaero
These un-primed shots were taken a while ago but never posted in this blog...

..likewise the primed shots were taken a while ago but never posted in this blog...

He is all ready for dry-brushing and more washes... also some eyes, I think

Tag... you're it

That's it for tonight, I am off to bed

Been awhile since I last uploaded or posted anything... jeebus, been awhile since I did anything related to my hobby

Picked up a terminator squad and will be adding this to the Marines Errant army that is taking shape again...
All the Terminators will need some shaving to get some flash off before priming, also some of the glue residue

Terminator Sgt

Terminator with chain-fist

Terminator with assault-cannon

Terminator with cyclone-launcher

Terminator walking

Group shot

Thanks for looking, more to come in the next coming days

Have been busy doing some more building; a number of different minis

Today I picked up the Forgeworld Legion Praetor mini; fantastic mini to work with..
Here is what was included in the box;

After snipping off the sprue(s), there were not any problems with bent pieces or bubbles (could be because it was FW and not GW resin... );

The sprue(s) are definitely being added to the bits box; they look like stands for SM relics or data terminal bases...

Here is the Praetor built (the left leg sits off the base a little, but some cork will fill up the gap...);

I have no idea what Legion I will paint this chap, just loved the mini

**************************************************************************************************************************************************
Next up some Chaos Space Marines;
Abaddon had his head and right arm attached (little washed out, sorry about that!!)

Typhus has been built and ready for priming (front & back)

Aspiring Champion built and ready to be primed (front & back)

**************************************************************************************************************************************************
New addition to the Deathwatch; a missile launcher trooper

**************************************************************************************************************************************************
Next up, some more members of my Imperial Taskforce;
Firstly, a bodyguard for my Inquisitor (it's head is being worked on...doesn't really come out well in the photo )

Secondly, a Vindicare Assassin to go with the Eversor

Third and final for the task force, a Master of Ordinance

**************************************************************************************************************************************************
Finally some additions to my Marines Errant force
Terminator Librarian has been built, primed, washed and ready for it's base coat!!

SM Assault Captain; built and ready for priming

SM Assault Chaplain; built and ready for priming

SM Assault Marines (4); built and ready for priming (2 were already primed & washed awhile ago but sat without arms until recently)

That's it for today, I've got some priming and painting to do so see you next year

Howdy... I thought of no better way to get back into the hobby then with a fun kit

I was bumming around Barnes & Noble and this jumped into my hands, twas pretty surprised to see it in there. Maybe I just don't get out much these days...

Bandai AT-AT Box cover art (I will provide some better pictures of the completed shots on the side of the box, they are pretty sweet )

Open the box to reveal the following;

Instruction booklet is pretty nice, a mixture of color and black/white print;

Finished the head already, it wasn't too bad. I didn't really have to use that much glue, there are alot of articulated pieces so you have to be careful when gluing pieces.

Example of the leg sprue, like the rest of the kit there is a high level of detail (and alot of pieces)

Just a small sample of leg construction and the articulation so far...

Just a small post tonight. Slowly getting my model fingers back, good night

Legs are all done (well, sort of... 3/4 are done and 1 is in triage currently )

Instructions for leg construction, easy to follow but easy to muff up if not paying attention
(you can build the entire kit without glue, that's pretty cool especially as I recall some other kits which tout "no glue needed" end up looking like gak).

Complete leg; quite detailed and very articulated (as shown in the following images), surprisingly quite sturdy also even without a large amount of glue.

Leg articulation example #1;

Leg articulation example #2;

A group shot of the differently positioned legs (this will help a great deal when positioning for final pose on it's Hoth base)

How the legs will be positioned underneath the chassis;

The inside of the leg; showing a support bar (all legs have this feature) which is made from a different type of plastic, not as hard as main plastic used in the kit.

Close-up of the foot, showing tow detail and articulation and the support bar mentioned above;

Again showing tow detail;

*************************
* ✙ Triage Center ✙ *
*************************
One draw back of kits that don't require glue is that a firm press of parts during dry-fitting is all that's needed to cause problems.
Before catching myself, I had snapped the lower leg together and then realized the foot was the wrong way around (the support bar/strut mentioned above wasn't lined up)

There was too much plastic to cut horizontally through the foot so I decided to cut where there is least plastic.

Close-up detail #1; cutting caused some displacement of the plastic but not too bad

Close-up detail #2; the foot got it easy, nothing that a little filing won't clean up

Painting this kit will be interesting because of the moving parts... I mentioned earlier I may just use the articulation as a way to pose on it's base, then base-coat the bastard.

Next up will be the chassis and leg attachment.

Thanks for looking, take care

OK, the AT-AT is out of triage and nicely recovered

Used a paperclip to pin the foot back into place and now the required holes are lined up for the strut to be positioned.

Here is the test fit of the paperclip; making sure I could line up the holes...

Another angle of the test fit; the paperclip can just be seen going through to the other side of the foot;

Pinned foot is looking good (chassis has been completed and the legs attached), don't ask why I pinned the foot AFTER I attached the legs to the body

Paperclip snipped and filed down, finally glued into place;

Another angle of the completed pinning, still showing the paperclip going through to the other side of the foot;

There are a number of small pieces to be added (like the cheek lasers) then she is ready for priming.
I was worried about how to paint this kit but damn... I've got nothing to worry about as there are a number of good videos on YouTube which build first, then paint, weather and base

Oh, just in case anyone is interested in non GW dioramas, please check this guy out... his naval-themed dioramas are insane.

Take it sleazy peeps, I'm going to peruse the Dakka Blogs and then it's 'night night' for me

Hi all, thanks for looking!

Time for a little update
It's been a few months but mainly WIPs of the following;
- SM Terminator squad
- SM Assault squad
- Chaos
- Star Wars
- Flames Of War

SM Terminator Squad (Marines Errant) update;
Finally got around to priming these guys (they are displayed at the beginning of this page... 2016).
Some flash, which I missed, is visible but now debating whether or not to remove

SM Assault Squad (Marines Errant) update;
Primed the final 3 assaulters (and the arms of one of the others), now will do the usual and wash with some dark stuff (pretty much the norm for anything that I prime white)

Chaos update;
Typhus got primed and is ready for base coats, nothing really planned for him apart from making it disgusting

- his backside

OK... time for some words of warning - DO NOT PRIME IN HUMID CONDITIONS
(mind you this was done a few weeks ago when it was a alot warmer/humid in upstate SC)
1). Aspiring Champion was almost ruined... I do believe I can repair this, maybe some very light rubbing (see if the Jokaero can lend his finger...)

2). Ordinance Officer fared much better than the champion but still looks like gak especially around the belt and tunic

Star Wars update;
Primed the AT-AT in black (peoples are primed white while vehicles are all primed black - don't ask me, I'm just weird).
All ready for it's base coat which will be grey. Twas pricing out an airbrush, but mate... I cannot justify the cost for airbrush and compressor, well I can but I need to justify it to someone else LOL

Here's a close-up of the front, like an idiot I didn't cover the front, red windscreen and has been covered up

Flames Of War update;
Started a Flames of War army, it looks like this will be finished in 2029 but that's cool.
On my way to collecting an early war Australian contingent based in North Africa; first rifle platoon (3 squads + HQ, mortar, boys rifle team)

Damlier Dingo Scout Cars
(LOL... well, after some research it wasn't these used by the Australians; the Dingo Scout was used not the Damlier Dingo... oh well, they are cool looking anyway)

Matilda I
(again... I failed big time; these were not used by the Australians but by the British in Europe)

Matilda II (or Matilda Senior)

That's it for tonight, take it sleazy

Little update this evening, getting ready to pick up a paint brush but first the usual ritual of washing the minis to expose the details...
(next time I won't take 2 years to spray or anything, who knew white isn't white anymore )

Typhus up first; pretty happy with the wash (Corax White prime with Nuln Oil wash). The details are nice, plenty ideas are coming to mind...

SM Terminator Squad up next; again, pretty happy with the wash (5 - Coraz White prime with Nuln Oil wash & 1 - old Citadel White prime with Nuln Oil wash).
In case anyone has also noticed (or I am TOTALLY late to the party), but Corax White is a little grey... isn't it?!?

SM Assault Chaplain rounding up the rear. Same wash as the others (Corax White prime with Nuln Oil wash) and same result as the others.

Vanguard Assault Squad

That's it for tonight, got some painting to do and a little Flames of War update is coming soon!

Take it easy people!

OK, time for a little Flames of War update

Along with my Australian force, I am slowly building a Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) force/patrol.
Yes, yes, I know I am definitely late to this party... Flames of War did have a boxed set/game called "Sting of the Scorpion" that was a LRDG raiding force; which included trucks, jeeps, dismounted infantry, also terrain (I think).
However, I have no interest in bidding on any sets that may exist on the interwebs... that's cool, because it will allow me to slowly build this out

This book is partly the reason for this escapade; history surrounding the unit, including commanders, tactics, logistics, etc...

So let's start with a minor haul; 2 Willys jeeps, 2 Chevy trucks (1 not shown), also an Australian Company HQ

Washing the resin pieces; sometimes it is not necessary but other times it does feel sticky or tacky to touch, so a good bath is in order

The LRDG Chevy truck(s). The detailing is awesome considering the size of these minis, I like that I don't have to glue on any wheels (the amount of times I have glued my fingers together).

The drivers are in, now I am just planning the passengers.

LRDG/SAS Willys Jeeps. Again, the detailing is ridiculous

Drivers and passengers in, just need the guns... maybe put these on bases, but still deciding...

Time to do some painting, the next update will be the Marines Errant Dreadnought.
Thanks for looking

Howdy all, thanks for looking

Following the previous post, just some WIPs of the Marines Errant Dreadnought (I believe originally primed black in 2014 )
Spoiler:

It had been a very long time since I put paint on the Dreadnought, here's a free tip... don't leave gak half-painted for years, some branded paint colors won't exist.
I originally used Ultramarine Blue and Space Wolves Grey but this filth isn't made anymore. Why jeebus, do I have to be so lazy
I was using the grey as a base color for a white highlight, now using a very light grey (yes, I know the greave is white and not light grey but twas painted before I selected a base for the white.. )

Now starting to add the first highlights to the base colors, primary dry-brushing has been completed so little details will now be picked out... washes will still occur to soften out some highlights

Continuing with the Marines Errant theme
I finally put some paint on the SM Predator turret as well; the main Rhino chasis was already primed black and partially base-coated a few years ago (2014??) but I never got around to finishing it.
Spoiler:

Same problem as the Dreadnought though... 5 years later the colors don't match but gak happens. Originally, I didn't know what to do with the turret; leave it black, paint it gold or split colors? It is obvious what was selected and I am happy with results. The cabling received it's base coat of yellow for a chevron pattern, so now I will continue to build up the yellow.

Primary dry-brushing has been completed, now going to add washes and highlights. The red lenses will also receive some loving..

That's it for now, but I will continue with more Marines Errant WIPs in the next post!

Later peeps

Just finished my peruse through your thread. Some great stuff here - and nice to see one of the more obscure marine chapters getting some love.

Agree that the detailing on the LRDG/SAS vehicles is nuts. Have fun painting it!

@Sageheart; Thanks for looking! It's nice to be posting with some semblance of regularity now. I actually primed and washed the 3 remaining Jannissaries (last November) so now the entire squad has some paint!! I will include a small update towards the end of this post.

@lGtR=; Thanks for looking, definitely some more Marines Errant WIP in this post! I am sorry to say, no paint progress on Flames of War minis but definitely soon.

This post continues from the previous; Marines Errant theme, now with WIP Terminator squad - click on image, tis zoomable

All the Terminators are at the same stage; had their main blue base coat added. Nice paint cover, although thanks to zoom and the iPhone I can see that touch-ups are needed.
The primary dry-brushing has been completed, dark red base coat for wax seals and eye lens has been applied now time for the light grey base coat to be added.
- head base coat applied, hopefully I can get to the teeth...

- biggest issue... didn't drill out the barrel(s)

- will try a chevron (warning stripes) on the chain fist, the black and yellow should pop-out nicely

- will try a chevron (warning stripes) on the flat faces of the missile launcher, again, the black and yellow should pop-out really nice

- nothing special will be performed.. maybe a personalized storm bolter, like black & white squares but if I do that for one then why not the others

This Company Champion was built and photographed a few(5?) years back. Since that time, armor base coat has been applied but will require touch-ups along with the application of the robe base coat.
Spoiler:

- the shield was selected because it kind of resembles the Co. Champion (without the wings...)

As mentioned previously, here are the 3 updated Vessorines; Heavy Bolter gunner and his spotter, and a trooper (with a missing gun barrel) - click on image, tis zoomable

Heavy Bolter gunner; set-up behind some cover, just waiting, watching, observing, wishing he could breathe smoke

Plenty of ammo and different kinds too... we've got good ammo, bad ammo, clean ammo, dirty ammo, smelly ammo

Heavy Bolter spotter; just glassing some distant targets...

Misc. trooper, nothing much really going on here, just a missing gun barrel (actually there are 3 missing in total, so he is not alone)

To finish up, a little WIP of Cypher... LOL, this was the first mini I put in the Chaos/Renegades Image Gallery of mine
Spoiler:

Put some paint on him awhile ago but never captured the WIP so here he is; the plans are to add arms and update the hand guns (bolt & plasma pistol). Oh... I love those Fallen back-packs

That is all I got for now, take it sleazy peeps!

Love the IG kitbask/conversions.

OUt of interest, do you know Anvil industries, they have a set multiple sets of fairly similar head types....if you felt like adding another 20 or so models.

Post by: chrisyella

@NotVaughn; Thank you very much, you are awesome and Anvil is awesome Although I didn't get any of the bionic heads, I ordered some other styles of head (and gear) to bring about some different types of janissary.

Here is a small update of the Marines Errant Dreadnought.
Still WIP but now starting to come to life.. the base coat for the white is finished (currently a very light grey). The sarcophagus has been high-lighted, wires/cables have been colored, and the base has been cleaned up. The next step is to complete the base coast for the blue, match it to the Terminators that are being worked on..

I have no idea what to put on the armor panels, in terms of insignia, but something will pop up

To finish up with, here are some shots of a combat servitor I've been working on for the last few years. The weapon was finally added a few months ago but I never uploaded any pics... The arms and legs are Necron (I have a feth-load of them considering I only used the heads for masks ), the body is an IG torso, and bolter is from the DA upgrade sprue(s). It's inspiration is displayed underneath... (from the movie Elysium)

For anyone that's interested, included in the spoiler are some pics from a book about the concept art for the movie Elysium; in particular a section on the robots (where the above pic was taken from)

Spoiler:

That's it for now, thanks for looking and enjoy your easter eggs you heathens!

Howdy all, thanks for looking

Since the last post, the Dreadnought had it's blue base coat re-applied and now the next step is to continue high-lighting with some washes (to build shadows in the blue - similar to the white section).
After the washing, high-lighting the skull by the left foot and rest of base to completion.

The Mechanicus symbol is calling me though... "paint me first"

Next up the Librarian; I completed the base colors on the armor (except belt buckle.. ), but robes and the scrolls/purity seals were completed too.

The gun casing will probably be a green & white chequered pattern with the embossed pieces being gold & bone

The staff will be bronze and the cables green (I am tempted to do a chevron but I need to complete the Predator cables first before doing that again...)

I don't know how to paint the book (a real book or painted like it was sculptured out of bone...maybe marble ) but definitely on a white shoulder pad.

Lastly an Assault Marine; base colors for the armor have been completed and also the purity seals/scrolls.
The helmet and certain embossed pieces are based gold, with a plan to paint the wreaths green.

The one pouch (ammo for the plasma pistol perhaps..) will be a brown color, similar to what I've done in the past.

The winged skull will be a bone color... and I am tempted to paint the plasma pistols in the squad a bright yellow with purple power coils

Take it easy you dirty animals... I'll leave you with this one tid-bit; Fulgrim likes butt-plugs

Small update today - continuing with Marines Errant WIP shots

The skull has been highlighted, now I will pick out the small bolt shells before leaving the base alone (it will be picked up again after highlighting of armor panels, don't want accidental wash drips).

The Mech. skull got some paint but it still doesn't pop out, I think I will do very small silver (or white perhaps ) lines on the black sections.
I also started the washes around the rivets on the blue back armor panels, but not happy with results... the Nuln Oil wash looks too matte (if that makes sense...) so I will add some blue to the black wash (or maybe even ink)

Two Terminators received their light grey base coat, nothing much really to add except I got lazy and painted over some of the washes (if I left the Nuln Oil wash in place then I can use that as an existing shadow or join between armor panels...)

Here are the base colors I am using for the Marines Errant; Macragge Blue & Ulthuar Grey. I will be adding white to the grey for final highlighting, though nothing but extreme edge highlighting and washes for the blue.

Take it easy people and don't forget to rock out with your ... ah... just hang loose, OK

Going with something different and why not, I like the man's hair (and his modelling skills are fairly decent )

Really like how each brush is individually packaged in a box, they each have a plastic tube on the tips as well...

Have a good one

Very small update; 80% of the terminators have had their light grey and gold base coats completed and with recent brush arrival, the missile launcher Terminator can now have it's light-grey and gold base coat(s) finished

I was able to place a rough chevron pattern on the chainfist and the flat faces of the missile launcher Terminators, both are first draft and not happy with the following;
  • angles of the chevrons on flat face (missile launcher) are not symmetrical; look at the right flat section and then the left, you should notice it...
  • width of chainfist chevrons are too narrow

  • ...and still not happy about the non-drilled assault cannon barrels

    But remember... success never occurs without failure

    Take it easy!!

    Yep, Miguel pushes good tools and stuff, from a higher-end half of the painting/modelling table. His pigments and mediums deserve more use!

    Now, I wouldn't consider Your terminators failure - first they are still work in progress and second - they look cool like that. Very interesting to follow - how would this white contrast darks and shades in the end. Cheers!

    I'm loving that combat servitor, the parts go together really nicely. Shaving down the bolter was a good call, although the sling looks a bit unnecessary. I would've maybe gone for a bit beefier head/sensor, but what you currently have looks good and functional as well.

    @Wirecat; Thanks for looking! You are correct, my Terminators are definitely WIP and they will not be a failure unless I completely stop
    I am starting to experiment with some of Mig's oil brush products and his washes, in particular using one of the blue Oil Brushes for shading the blue armor sections of the Marines Errant (the Nuln Oil and blue Citadel washes just didn't work as I expected.. the Macragge Blue base-coat is simply too dark). The white sections are a Ulthuan Grey base coat with Nuln Oil washes in the recesses, then I will add thinned layers of Ceramite White on top of the grey.

    @mcmattila; Thanks for looking! Yeah, I am a little torn with the idea of slings (and belts/pouches) on servitors and SM's.. I mean, Black Library authors always make reference to magnetic clamps but I have an argument for the use of slings/pouches/belts... wouldn't magnets affect the electronics of the servitor and/or the SM power armor? You are correct about the head, it is too thin and definitely needs some more sensors and wires. I don't know about the actual face though, likewise should all the combat servitors have the same face plate or be different?

    Following are some of the weathering sets I recently ordered; now, I have never used anything so technical before so I am expecting some interesting results
    - Dust effects box and contents...

    - Wood effects box and contents...

    - Engine and track effects box and contents...

    Miscellaneous streaking effects that will be put to good use on and in vehicles, included are; streaking wash for interiors, streaking grime for exteriors, streaking for specific grey, chipping effect, etc...

    Here are some WIP shots of the AT-AT I have been slowly working on... it can finally progress along, now that I have finished my procrastination... I mean, decision process around the weathering.
    I finally got around to base coating it grey and by using only 1 coat, I am hoping it will add to the streaking effects yet to come

    The front and rear of the AT-AT (the rear feet are a little too close for comfort, I don't know how realistic that would be... I guess I have to watch Empire Strikes Back again, and again, and again )

    That's it for now, the next post will have some updates to my Marines Errants.

    Take it easy and thanks for looking at my plog

    Missed that combat servitor before. I reckon it needs some shoulder pads next, then some detailing on the arms and legs. Wires, ammo packs, etc...

    @Fifty; Thanks for looking! Definitely time for detailing on the combat servitor... it's been a while for me Shoulder pads are a good idea, I was going to leave the shoulders bare to highlight the joints but you've changed my mind!

    As promised in last post, here is an collective update of the assault marines. These haven't had any brushes on them for at least 2 years... I had to dust them off (apparently not too well, as you can see some dust fluff in the pictures ) and while doing so I dropped a couple, resulting in some dings that need to be corrected (pretty annoying...).

    One of the marines dropped... happened to be the one which was ready for further detailing...

    The damaged area...

    The chaplain has received its base coats of colors and detailing has been started; washes over the gold and bone helmet darkened nicely but I muffed up the center talbard/scroll by putting a dark brown in the middle... shouldn't have done that.

    rest of the squad... yes, dusty

    I promise the next WIP shots will not be so dusty... I am fething embarrassed but won't change those photos!

    A group of friends have started a D&D campaign and asked me to paint a few minis for them (big thanks to Carol, Josh and Smashley for getting me back to the brushes!!!).
    I have painted a few pieces already but I wanted to document progress from start to finish on a new piece they sent me. I was originally calling her "spider lady" but found out she is Shaerileth, Spider Demoness (Reaper minatures). I would like to replicate a pattern similar to a writing spider (beautiful spider here in the upstate of SC!)

    I was thinking of adding some putty to the joints where the legs meet the body, but I don't know... the legs of a spider do look segmented because of the exo-skeleton, will I ruin the legs if I do add putty?!?

    Thanks for looking y'all, let's get painting

    I think the legs look good as is. And personally I'd be tempted to put a jollyrancher in the abdomen, but maybe because I'm a bit weird. Cool model, looking forward to seeing what kinda color you slap on her.

    @Warboss_Waaazag; Thanks for looking! After priming and applying the black wash, the legs look good as-is (glad I listened)
    The main colors will be yellow and black with each 'spike' being white, while her body will be light grey I don't know what color her hair will be. I am using yellow writing spiders as a reference. The jollyrancher was a great idea, although it didn't fit, but how about some coca-cola tic-tacs

    I went ahead and primed Shaerileth white, didn't use any spray (as it is humid here) but applied with brush. A little side-note, usually I water down my Citadel paints and as a prerequisite I have to wash the minis with soapy water before priming... this time I added Lahmian Medium and the 'thinned' white went down nice and thick, not like watery milk (and yes, I did see the threads on Dakka regarding this very subject... good reading )

    After priming, I did my usual by applying a dark wash (Nuln Oil) to most of the body and straight black to the legs. I will be adding some 'ardcoat to the legs as a final touch to ensure that the legs are nice and shiny but that will be a final task.

    As mentioned above, I am very glad that no putty was added to the joints as the articulation would have been covered up.

    With the egg sac attached (not glued yet as it doesn't sit properly)...

    Thanks everyone for looking at my plog, take it sleazy and remember it takes more muscles to frown than to smile, you dirty heathens

    Happy humpday, hoons

    The following are some pictures of a yellow writing spider in my garden/yard. She is beautiful; females are the brighter and larger gender, they bump uglies with the males, eat them, lay an egg and then die. We don't kill them as they keep the garden nice and bug-free (mostly ). This is the color scheme I am following for Shaerileth (although her hair will be a color very different to yellow, black or white).

    So using the above shots, I have painted the basic colors on the legs. The first set of legs are solid black (matching the writing spider), the last three sets had their third section painted Averland Sunset and washed with the original Gryphonne Sepia (yes, I have some spare pots ).

    Pretty happy with the first results, the Averland Sunset will be brightened in the middle sections, I may redo the joints where the black meets the orange/yellow and thin the streaking effect (or add very small dots). Definitely needs a coat of 'Ardcoat to finish and ensure those legs are shiny. I really want that translucent effect on the colored sections.

    I working on her body now, still going with a light grey color and gold for her body jewellery. The spider part of the body will be a darker grey (this does not include the egg sac).

    Thanks for looking
