Thought I'd share my latest army project with you lot, the alpha legion lovers out there needs a little love and hopefully a nudge of inspiration too.
This had a humble beginning as a small force intended for a pre-heresy killteam weekend campaign at my local elite store/ gaming club.. and was intended as a ravenguard force.. needlessly to say.. it went a bit overboard.

things tend to get overboard when I get going with things.. anyway.. the RG ide was scrapped.. mostly since the olden days of the 3d installment and the following Armageddon supplement I have a too large Black Templar army and..
..well.. I didn't want to paint another black army.. 80ish initiates, 16is termies and a motorpool of 5 rhino/razorbacks, 7 landraiders (crusaders with the odd helios and phobos pattern) a swarm of landspeeders and a few las predators is enough..

so.. Alpha Legion it is.

First mark to set is 1500 points worth of infantry with drop pods and some support armour.

Captain Octavius Hydacian, Scion of Terra, Commander of the Glorious 6th.

That Alpha Legion symbol was a complete b*tch to do, but now that I have the technique down it should not be too hard to replicate on the rest of the boys.. it will only be 45 more marines.

Corsair Seadragon cloak? Yes Please! .. Some say it contains more badassery than a bearded .. All I know is; it looks great.

The mutilated sister ended up being painted in the colours of the Argent Shroud, i felt the other orders had a too striking colour palette that would disrupt the composition of the model.
Never ever use red as a large component on a base, draws all the attention unless the main colour of the piece runs in the yellow-orange-red spectrum.
Been thinking about adding something to his left shoulderpad but I am unsure.. I want to ceep it clean, not cluttering up the model with too much detail.

Everyone needs a dreadnought, prefferably with a lascannon for some long-range
It's almost done, just some details left like a name on the scroll, some heraldry on the shield and a couple of touch-ups on the highlights.
I need to free-hand the hydra too.. the damn transfer captures some air that I missed and now there are some pale blotches on it.. oh.. and I need to add the legion insignia somewhere.

Blotchy hydra as you can see.. and the 'XX' legion number ended upp slightly off-center but it works, was thinking of adding the 'A' on the small plate below the main shoulder armour that has the 'XX'.

Tried to make a high-polish brass effect on the powerplant, turned out quite nicely me thinks.
Maybe I should add some text on that purity seal..

Aaaargh! what trickery is this? why is that thing blue? blatant thievery of the most hallowed mechanicum's priceless STC- blueprints has obviously been afoot!

Gentlemen, I present to you: the Mk I Ophidian Pattern Gunship in all it's basecoated glory.

Death From Above! ... Ahem.. yes.. well.. that's all for now! CnC is highly appreciated, please help
me with comming up with a suitably cool and evocative name for the dreadnought.

The feint green highlights really make the pieces look cool. Nice job.

The captain is incredible. I love the helmet contrast and of course the cape. I second the green highlights, they really are light-handed and make the pieces stand out.

I have two questions for you on the dread:

One: The light concrete dust on the legs, is that drybrushed on or pigments? I'm looking at doing something similar for my marines since they are in urban combat, but I have not had success making it look well done. I really like the subtleness on yours.

Two: I love the polished brass look on the dread, is that fine pigment paint like model air or a technique that you've used?

Anyway, really great force, I love the look of these.

Thanks guys and yes misagula, there will be more.. painting as fast as I can here.

@ risewiththefallen; well.. the little minds of the 41st millenium might think so, but the Alpha Legion never abandoned our oaths to the emperor.. unlike some
that worship him against his command, and thus needs to be ground underfoot!

on a more serious note I will not add any chaos imagery, there might be the odd trophy skull here and there but nothing chaotic.
I am aiming for a look that works both pre- and post- heresy, as such the newest mark of power armour in the entire force will be the Mk VI 'Corvus' pattern with a majority
of Mk VI and Mk IV suits with a few Mk III in the mix.

I will probably buy a pile of FW Mk V Heresy marines soon.. I have had my eye on them a long time and well.. I just Have to get a Contemptor pattern dreadnought for my
Alphas. No other way around it!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
@ Gorgrimm: Thank you for the kind words and for your answers.

One: It is an very light drybrush, using very little paint in the brush, with a few applications of Valejo 'wolf grey' followed by a careful drybrush of white from the same paint brand.

Two: the Brass is done with GW's Tin bitz, mithril silver and devlan mud. its basecoated tin bitz, washed with devlan mud then painted with tin bitz again. after that it's highlighted 5 times
with tin bitz and mithril silver, each consequtive highlight smaller and with a tad more mithril silver in the mix.
One needs to keep a careful eye on how light falls on the surface and do a little research on how light and metal interacts. place a sharp lightsource above the model before you paint, it helps a bit.

Update! ..then Lunch.

Work progresses with the command squad
This Axe-armed one is destined to be the command squad sergeant, armour is in the early stages of highlight, metal and leather just basecoated so far.

turning out quite nicely, this is about 60-70 mins work from a black basecoat, including a coffe-break or two.

Making some bases for the Hq squad, never done custom bases before.. it's quite fun!

Squad member taking a shot at some unlucky thing outside the frame.

Company Champion, not on his custom base yet.. dressed in a suitably fashionable scale cloak.

Apothecary, next in line for a paintjob after the sarge.

Specialist with Meltacarbine, why? well.. I was out of meltaguns but had a handful of meltapistols to spare..
Need and materialshortages is the mother of all conversons..

.. I had to buy one,.. it's not my fault!.. it's too sleek, and cool, and pretty.. it makes wooshy sounds standing still dammit!

That's all for today

I have made a grave error, a fatal mistake, a logical loop, a friggin 404.. the modellers bane..

I have had a flash of.. gnnn.. INSPIRATION!

Needless to say I am doomed, I am sure you will all agree. this is the kind of creeping dread we all know too well.. the feeling that you just know will cost you huge sums, take all your spare time hostage and leave your soiled an unkept frame
awash with plastic shavings, licks of paint and your fingers caked with residual superglue.. it's the concept you dream about even when you try to sleep, expanding, adding.. like a fever that you just -HAVE- to expel by making it come true in
plastic, metal and resin.. why?.. you know why.. because it is So Damn Good.. and you know you can make it look awsome to behold..

So how did this fever, this sickness.. this Delerium clasp it's spined coils around my Central Nervous System? What made it come to a life of it's own and make it whisper it's dreams of grandeur from the dark recesses of my cerebellum?

I was doodling along on my honourguard sergeant.. eventually finishing it and then went out for some coffe.. once back, now one cup of coffee richer, I started to muse on what to paint next.. apothecary? .. maybe the meltagunner?
no.. the drop pod. So I happily started to basecoat the instrument of troop-delivery blue in the appropriate places, nothing foul with that. A little while later the pod had it's blue coat and by then my pot with my 'speshul lucky blue' mix had run out..
It's about here somewhere I become dimly aware that I am all out on the major base component ( Necron Abyss) for the mix and that.. well.. the hobbystore is closed..
No matter! I foolishly think, I can always buy some more tomorrow.. and off I go to find something to drink and a book to spend some time with.. this is where everything starts to get out of hand...

Well.. not that bad.. not yet at least.. while going through my bookshelf I find a misplaced copy of IA: 8, the Raid on Kasterl-Novem.. of course I take it with me, I like the elysians immensly ever since FW started churning out their kits and the IA books are always fun to read..
After about an hour's worth of reading I stop at one of the beautifully rendered pictures, showing a bunch of troops rapelling from hovering valkyries while a vulture is bringing in some close airsupport and I start thinking about one of my old IG projects that never made it off the drawingboard.. Airborne Heavy Infantry.. then some random thoughts and ideas about my Alpha Legion project come rushing in and collide violently with the ideas of zooming valkyries.. after a few confusing moments I am dashing to the bookshelf to dig out my well-thumbed
copy of dan abnett's LEGION..

A couple of hours and a pile of books and codexes, a few pages of scribbled ideas and scetches and too much inspirational music.. I foolishly had Two Steps From Hell - Heart of Courage (Extended Version) running on on repeat together with some Globus on the soundsystem.
Just copy paste that title and look it up on youtube or spotify.. you will understand why it does not help with slowing down ideas..

So now it is completely clear to me what I must do.. I must make an Airborne Stormtrooper army to complement my alpha legion.. Hydra cell stormtroopers with valkyries and goodies.. ever model individually converted ..too good to say no to!
And I must make an Alpharius model.. or two! and the legionaires need rhinos.. very customised rhinos.. and I must make another Ophidian Gunship .. I must design regimental structures and write fluff! Loads of Fluff! design insignia and 'devotional art' for the valkyries..

Jesus Christ doing 160 on the highway in a cardbox car.. .... What have I done?!

Thanks for the kind and supportive commentry guys, it warms my addled brain.. or something like that!

I have been spending a few hours today on trying to piece together what parts I can use and what must be hand-sculpted to make suitably equipped IG spec-ops models with carapace armor.
Not so easy I can tell you that.. where the in 's 'n are those plastic Storm Troopers for the guard I wonder!? Stuff is never around when you need it.. typical typical..

Alpharius and Omegron will make an appearance Miss Dee, have no fear of that. I might need to read up on a truescale marine tutorial or two to make them in a more suitable size.. or I'll just talk to a friend who is quite good at that truescale nonsense..
My Muse.. yes.. she's not all that nice to me Gitspitta.. a damn -tease if you ask me..

Aaaaanyhow.. I took some more pictures.. got -something- done today at least..

Based and slid on a hydra transfer on my Sergeant, turned out quite well this one .. also did some minor touch-ups here and there.

I want a trained leprechaun or something that paints those legion symbols for me.. 8 consequtive layers of highlighting is messed up!

forgot to paint the base with a last touch of fenris grey I see now.. oh well..

Almost done with drop pod no:1

Been rummaging through my stuff for things to add to my rhino kit to make.. well.. rule-wise a razorback with lascannons and every possible upgrade avalible..
Let's just call it something APC-ish .. I can name it when it's done.

And a Groupshot, for your entertainment. Not the best picture I am afraid, caught some flare from the window so it became too bright.. but.. yeah.. it works I guess.

Have you considered the true scale kits that Chapterhouse have?

Also you should look up Hits_the _spot, he does brilliant true scale stuff.

PS Alpha Legion are my favourite marines after the space puppies.

I really like the transition from navy blue into green, very effective. Is it navy blue or dark purple?

I had a look but I can't say I liked the chapterhouse stuff, I'll go with my toolbox, bitbox and a pile of greenstuff (well.. i use the grey type but.. yeah) and see what I can cook up.
Maybe I should pick up some Grey Knight Terminators and see what I can make of them.. Bleh.. I'll do some bitz-scouting & scavageing and see what's what.

the 'navy blue' is my 'Speshul lucky blue'-mix, it's GW Foundation Necron Abyss with a splatter of Chaos Black and Hawk Turqiouse in the pot to darken it slightly and making the blue a little richer.
I guess regular Necron Abyss works fine too, it's quite similar, it's just a slightly different tone.

I'll probably have an APC building spree tomorrow.. maybe finishing the melta specialist or the drop pod.. we'll see what happens.

Loving what I see, but was curious about 1 or 2 things.

You said before that MK VI armour would be the newest variant yo would use, but I see 1 or 2 MK VII heads in there, are you planning to convert them to MK V's (heresy armour) by adding studs and altering the grille?

The lack of overt Chaos or Imperial iconography(except the Captains eagle, is that to fool the loyalists? Btw I l think it looks great and the colour for it is perfect) sets them off beautifully, and shows their ambiguous & mysterious nature to a tee.

Keep it going, they look amazing and you have a great talent.

Btw how is the ordinatus engine coming along?

Thank you guys, warms my heart and all that stuff.

Yes, I will attempt to convert those Mk VII helmets into Mk V, if it don't turn out nice I'll slap on a pair of Mk IV ones.
As for the iconograpy..well.. there will probably be an Aquila here and there.. no chaos stars though..

Today there has been some painting done.. halfway finished with the apothecary and melta specialist, been taking some pics of each step of the painting, thought someone might be interested in
a short 'how to paint'- thingy.

Yeah.. the Ordinatus engine.. well.. it will be finished some day.. i had to throw out all the scetches I had done though since my mechanicum project took a rapid turn to the left and then an unexpected
dive into the Eye of Terror..

So I need to do a little re-thinkin' see..

Been building today though!

I had a sorcerer lying around.. and my Dark Mechanicum -DO- need an archmagos.. so.. some WIP photos of that

Scratchbuilt a gun and some stuff.. not quite sure how I want things yet.

somewhat better pic of what will be used in the finished model.

SOmetimes.. I am very intelligent.. I am not that good at sculpting.. I -never- touch the stuff besides for some gap filling and I rarely have to do even that..

Now however.. with no batteries in the camera I can't finish the models I was painting because I am photographing each step for a small painting tutorial.. so what does a smartass like myself do?

Well.. the -wrong-thing to do is to scrounge up some legs and shoulderpads from a terminator kit, a nice helm.. some odds and ends and make an attempt to make a passible primarch model..
And while one's at it.. let's not do something simple! nooo! we have to try to sculpt a Mk IV Maxumus armor.. Jeez what was I thinking?..

well.. the GS is curing and I am thinking feverishly about a way to make this look at least a little good.. *kicks the teeth in on the inner perfectionist* oh sush you..

I really, really love the poses on your marines, they're all uniqe and very dynamic, even without the paintjob they're a joy to behold! The two lascannon marines are my favorites atm I think.
Btw, the music that you've mentioned so far really gives the blog the right feeling, can understand that you were inspired by it. Even I, one of the slowest painters on dakka, felt the need to pick up my brush and do some work.
Really looking forward to seeing more!

So, with some spare time and new batteries in my camera I can summarise that it's update time!

We'll start off lightly with that little 'how to paint' thingy I promised.

First off, black undercoat. (doh! ) for some odd reason I painted the leather details first.. basecoated 50:50 chaos black / scorched brown.

Paint armor with Necron Abyss ( I use a speshul secret mix with black and turqiuse in the mix but it's not a big difference) and metal areas boltgun metal, codex grey on the armor joints.

Give the whole shebang a black wash, badab black, water and chaos black.. whatever you have.

Paint the armor with necron abyss, leaving out the areas that are not in full view and all the normal stuff for shading, you know what I mean

Mix Necron Abyss and Snot Green 50:50 with some water, this mix needs to be a bit thinner than what you normally use and highlight with broad strokes.

Highlight with Snot green.

Mix Skull white and snot green 50:50 and apply the extreme highlight. I have been doing some other stuff here too but yeah.. here you go.. alpha armour done.

Aaand I forgot to take a pic of the finished model on it's base.. bleh.. I'll add it in the next update..
So I have been playing with putty and plastic.. trying to make a passible Alpharius model.. I'd like to remind you that this is very very WIP and that I never have done this before..

And yeah.. this didn't work out at all.. scale is all off.. I'm not that much of a fan of the truescale. oh well, some other way maybe. this one's getting recycled.

Thanks for the 'how to' steps - much appreciated!

I might try something like that for my version of Omegon's Effrit Stealth Squad.

And I must say, that's a good start to Alpharius, though I must also say that I'm much thinner in real life!

As for the Alpharius model, you might want something to work off..

Ugh - please do NOT base it off of that!

Besides, given what we learned from LEGION, we know that Alpharius and Omegon, and indeed, no one in the Legion!, looks like that.

That's when Mr. Blanche apparently was suffering from a high grade fever and attempted to still draw a Primarch...

Very interesting take on the scheme, and fantastic work overall! Not taking the blue above abyss is a really clever choice, as it makes the color kind of an indeterminate indigo, highlighting the green nicely without competing with it or making the entire scheme a bit 'garish' as it usually is.

Well done!

Good point, I wasn't thinking at the time.

I should also really get round to reading the Heresy series as well.. even if most of it has been ruined by the endless spoilers.

That paint job looks amazing, and very effective!!! have you considered the Chapterhous True scale kits for making the Primarch's?

Although if you read Legion the Primarchs are almost identical in every way to their own troopers, barrinfg a miniscule height difference when in full plate armour.

It would keep them all looking the same but you get the extra height and broadness of the primarchs

Thanks for the input and kid words guys

@ Dantay_xy:
Yes, but I don't really like the chapterhouse stuff, looks a bit off to me.. it's just a testmodel after all and I don't think I want to waste any more cash on it before I have made up my mind. I might end up doing the primarchs in some other way that truescale, I feel it becomes a tad too big when compared to the other marines. It might look better once I get some arms and pads on the damn thing though.. we'll see.

That's some really nice work you are doing there man! I really dig the magos, and your marines look very dynamic.
How many models do you think the final force will be, or are you just building as the mood suits you? Either way, it will be great looking both on and off the table, I am sure!

I was reading the preview books from GW yester day and they are releasing a limtied edition HH book calles Aurelian and it has the description of the Alpha's Primarch as:

Alpharius was the last of those present through long-range sending. He stood helmed, while all the others were bare-headed, and his hololithic image was stable while each of the others uffered corruption from the vast ranges between their fleets. Alpharius, almost a head shorter thsan his brothers, stood scaled in crocadilian resplendence, his reptile-skin armour plating glinting in the false light of his manifestation. His salute was the sign of the aquila, the Emperors own symbol, made with both hands across his breastplate

This was from a meeting between 8 of the rebel Primarchs during the Heresy. Interesting hat he would hide his features even from his brothers and even arouse suspicion with his opening gesture.

Anyways thought it might help with ideas for the Primarch.

@ Wehrkind: I have parts and an army list for 50ish marines, 5 in command squad, 20 tactical, 10 assult with jumppack, 10 assult without jump packs.. a pile of drop pods and some funnies.. I have some terminators too but they are not the priority at the moment.

So.. update! I haz building stuffs.

I haz building tacticul thingies.. Will make customz city bases for them all. (all 50+ models that is)

Sergeant for tactical squad one.

Sergeant for tactical squad 2.. and no.. he's not being painted.. he's made from a bunch of recycled parts from many people's bitboxes..

Started to build a techmarine for no good reason..

And here's the assult squad sergeant.. sheesh it's tricky to reposition limbs on metal models.. took a friggin' age to saw, hack and file him into some semblance of order.

Basecoated the rest of the commandsquad and fiddled some paint on the gunship.. nothing worth posting pics on as of yet though.

That's actually a very Codex thing to do, so the irony is... awesome!

It is a fairly standard 'veteran sergeant' marking as well, so I can see a veteran of any sort making use of it.

And more importantly, it looks really good too!

@Miss Dee: the metal bolter with the box mag is from the old SM scout bikes metal kit, dunno if it's possible to get hold of anymore.

@Kensei81: The chainaxes are from the Plastic Khorne Berzerker kit, a bit on the downer is thay you only get 3 of that type, then 3 other.. too many chainswords in that kit if you ask me.

@ephrael: Good to hear, remember to use a fine detail brush for the highligts and water your paints better to be forced to put down the highlight with three brushsttokes than getting a thick and uneven line.

Thanks for the comment's guys, it boosts the motivation to keep up a steady rate of modelling and painting.
Mmm been a bit low on the painting lately, I am styling a powersupply for a friend's tattoo machine into something slightly steampunkish... it's a bit tricky, especially that functioning mechanical clockwork I put on the side of it took hours to get right.
It's something of a rush job and I want to get it done by Saturday.. then I'll get back on the alphas properly.

Well, the commandsquad is all painted and done.. but what to start painting next?

So.. what do -You Guys- think I should paint next?
Avalible on the list is a bolter armed squad (two acctually but one at the time) an assultsquad on foot and an assultsquad with jumppacks.
There is also that big Gunship (Mk I Ophidian pattern appearing on page 1) and the Razorback apc on page 2.

any suggestions?

Wohooo! finally got my hardware into working order so here are som pictures for you, this will sure make Alpharius happy since he sent me a message begging for updates a while back.
Man needs his weekly fix of alpha legion it seems.

So, apothecary finished and based, for your pleasure.. or horror.. I dunno..

Command squad veteran in Mk VI armor, I really like that breastplate with the ammo-slings.. and mkVI with chainaxe.. yeah,it's awsome.

Melta Specialist in MkIV with meltacarbine, I am getting slightly worried that I am going overboard with my bases.. they are becomming a tad.. scenic.

Groupshots!

Almost done with the company champion.

Now.. who might this base wip. be intended for eh? Like I said earlier.. it's going overboard badly here.. I am not kidding. I'll let you wonder about this until the next update or so.. it will be equally awsome.

Just went through the 3 pages, I can't believe I've missed that !

That painting technique looks awesome for them, you now have to tell us how you painted the A on their shoulder pads !

The pose and use of original weapons & armour really make them stand out.

Some of the best Legion minis I've seen (well, migsula's a bit higher up the range, but what's the point in comparing yourself with a demi-god of arts, anyway?)

Thanks for the words guys.

@ Disjointed entity: yes, it's the big oval base they supply for the valkyrie, dreadknight, stormraven etc. all the big stuff in short.

@ Yggdrasil: Heh, I'll post a guide on making the legion insignia once I get to paint another. And yes, Migs plays a little higher up on the ladder than I do but he has a different an more gritty, grimdark style than me. I suspect he has found a way to solidify the Blanchitsu of the Master and is snorting it like there's no tomorrow. My style is more towards the clean, crisp and highly visable, more intended for the tabletop battlefield than as art. That unfortunatly means that realism of the more awsome kind has to take a step back.

Then there's also the fact that migs is a far better painter and sculptor than I am.

Apologies, Yggs- I should have worded that better. But your statement is true- the styles are obviously very different, and what I meant to say was like you- Alpha Legion seems to bring out the best of the best. LOL... the 1K Sons here have nothing on the Alphas, beautiful as they are.

I think both of you and Migs have a great take on the same subject matter. Migs has a lighter shade to his entire army- but that comes with his painting style, I think. Your darker take is also very interesting, and my favorite of the two, tbh. (I'm a sucker for clean colors) But yea, both of you get high marks for modelling and execution.

EITHER way, apologies again, Yggs. STC- Get to work. We need more of these guys.

True to form I bought a bunch of the new warhammer mono-sprue plastics yesterday.. spent a few hours on it yesterday so nothing done on the alpha legion as of yet. I'll finish the company champion once I get out of this damn office though.. I'll see if I can take some
pictures of the work in progress on the =][= Warband. the problem is it seems it will become two warbands too.. I found some stuff in one of my (way too many of those) Bitboxes that I can use. I found an unpainted FW Inquisitor Lok (the Anphelion Project guy) and an undercoated rhino with the =][= resin kit smacked on too. it was years and years since I bought those.
But that's cool.. some conversion on him and I have the beginnins of an Ordo Xenos warband too... but in a few hours.. The Dark Mechanicum commeth....

Pictures then.

Identified: Delta/Rho-6653/51 Reclamator; Legio Cybernetica. ++ =][= :// [Excommunicate Traitoris][++Access Denied++] ++

Based on the necromancer model with some gubbins up every sleeve, its still very very early in the making but you get the general pose and flair of the model.

Still in parts for easy painting, gotta loooove the new plastics.

Unidentified: "Specter". ++ =][= :// [No Data] ++

The machine wraith, the terror construct with adamantium bones and monofilament flensingclaws. Directed by the malignant Silica Animus, a masterpiece of the legio cybernetica.

Undead wrath plastic, dark eldar bayonettes for claws

The archmagos you have seen before, this is the final version, ready fo the paintbrush. I am very pleased with how it turned out in the end.

been messing around a little today too.. the DE Shredder on the wraith is gone.. Yeah well, I don't like the truescale concept, nor do I fully understand it. I can see 'why' if you (looking at you migs) are going to have one or two marines and a pile of 'regular' humans in the sense of conveying scale.
But creating whole armies of them? I can't see the point since then they become completely unviable to use for gaming; and I'm as much of a gamer as I am a hobbyist or painter. Besides, 99% of the truescale I have seen fails miserably to make the Astartes justice at all, often missing all proportions and in a sense becomming a futile effort since now you have something that is much worse than the original plastic kits.

I mean here is what to aim for.

Look at it, nothing ever done in 'truescale' ever came close to that. It inevidibly becomes too bulky, thickset and with ridicolously small heads and arms; No sense of -Proportions!-. Like I said, an exercise in futility.

Don't worry, STC, it is not "us" who want truescale, but only a few of "them". I agree with your sentiments about that. And while I would really like GW to somehow change the size difference between guard and marines to what it should be, I don't think doing it yourself makes any sense, especially because of the gamewise problems that would result.

Your Alpha Legion guys are quite awesome!

Thank you so much for saying that! Whilst I admire the conversion and sculpting skills of he True/Art/Actual-scale camp I feel they've never really addressed the issue.

Your work is superb, the Dark Mechanicum are superb and look just right. It's amazing that so much of it is relatively simple converting and kit-bashing!

Didn't mean to open the can of worms that is the true scale discussion. It's just that to me it seems weird that marine models are the same size as regular humans and have proportions that seem rather odd (unnaturally skinny legs and arms), Terminators technically couldn't even fit in their armour without some serious deformities.

But that's a separate discussion.

Now keep on making some freaky Dark Mechanicus stuff!

Whoa!

Don't hate the player, hate the game!

I've seen plenty of well proportioned 'True Scale" marines - and the reason behind building them as an army is probably the same as anyone else's when they're building an army of (x) - because they enjoy the challenge and the results!

If done correctly, a True Scale Marine army is a sight to behold!

Having said all that, I enjoy 'regular' scale stuff too - yours especially so!

GW could have made everyone happy if:

1) They modeled marines standing up straight at times!
2) They didn't inflate the size of 'regular' humans and Xenos figures!

Ah, the Primarch makes an appearance!

Well, that came out a bit more harshly than I intended and was not directed at the people who make and enjoy the truescale game, but rather at the 'Truescale' as an occurance separated from the player/hobbyist base.
Like thrashing GW for random reasons while having nothing against the individuals working for the company.. well besides the smartass who came up with the 'No information whatsoever to anyone! not even retailers!'-idea.
And it's more akin to annoyed resentment than any hate, I reserve that for things that matter on a grander scheme of things.

Thought: since everyone plays marines and it's only the regular humans who are of a faulty scale (besides the FW models and all the old metal IG infantry) in compairison (well tau too but who cares for the blue manga-race? ).
Wouldn't the logical thing be Truescale Imperial Guard?

I'll just shut my trap and paint!

It would but you either buy IG from FW or try to make them smaller by resculpting most of the model.
Too costy or too long/hard.

Some really nice stuff going on in here. Always love to see the alpha legion out and about. Ever since i saw Migs first minis iv fancied a go myself but have never been very good at completing project i already have on my work bench.

The Blue/Green you've used really works nicely, particularly with the white helmets and silver details etc. Also im a big fan of the Mk I Ophidian Pattern Gunship, i take it that you'll be playing the army as counts as BA?

Iv gotta agree about FW, iv been taking a break from hobby stuff for a while now, but their new releases are demanding i start up again. I think the regular contemptor would suit the legion a little more than their latest release, but either would look fantastic im sure. Looking forward to seeing more, keep it up!

On a side note, i know its down to personal opinion, but as some of you may know. Im a fan of true/TRU/art scale (when done well). Hense why i sculpted a whole range of TRU scale parts for Chapter House. heres an example:

Although i have to say that the proportions aren't perfect( as i wanted to keep the use of GW arms and heads etc), i think there a lot better than GWs .Anyways, sorry for the thread jacking. As i said before. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Yay, CnC. Been away all weekend to visit my parents so no hobby time.

I don't mind a little threadjacking Hits, and good to have you back, I have been keeping an eye on your work.
And yes, BA it is. Since I built that damn ugly thing I am sure as hell going to use it! It was originally intended as an effort to make a passible Stormraven before there was a model avalible, and every single conversion looked like a valkyrie had crashed horribly into a Land Raider for some odd reason, but it kind of got a bit big.
So it evolved into an effort to play it like a Ceastus Assult Ram but before completion I had a change of hearts, I -Liked- the acctual Ceastus and I don't make variants of models I like.. so.. Stormraven. Eventhough it's more than twice the stormraven's mass.
But no matter.. it acctually looks like it could carry 12 marines (or 6 termies) and a dreadnought, wich is a bonus in my book.
Another reason is that I can't make a good Legion army with another codex at the moment, I really don't like the SM Codex as a Legion template, spacepuppies is a distinct no-go and well.. there is no Codex around for the CSM's at the moment.
*glares* There is none! Understood!? there's some kind of travesty out there that says it's a CSM codex but it's not! it LIES! It has usurped the previous codex that was the true one. ... I want's it back..

So yes.. contemptor.. and MK1 RH-1-N-0. I'll be using the 'Regular' one for the Legion yes, I am thinking Kheres Assultcannon and Heavy Flamer.. maybe a Cyclone too.. Maybe.
It'll have to wait a little while though, where the hell are my Mk IV Assultmarines with jumppacks?!

That "new" FW Raider is just awesome, I just love it! But then I've always preferred the old one, the new one is to much of a square box for me... The new rhino-kit however ain't that impressive imo, you could get the old ones instead, they look better, are cheaper and isn't that hard to come by!

Nevah! I am planning my FW purchases as we speak.. Contemptor with assultcannon and maybe a heavy conversion beamer, two umbra pattern boltgun kits, heavy weapon kit, a kit each of the Mk IV and V marines, and the Apocalypse 2 book.. once I make up my mind I'll go and throw my monies at FW's webstore.
Then I have to do for a month or two and once those are finished I'll get myself the Relic contemptor, three Mk Ic rhinos.. and probably some more marines.

That's at least the plan.

The land raider is ÂŁ80

The random works of STC: Alpha Legion, Ravenguard, Superheavies! @ 2011/09/27 06:05:11

Post by: STC_LogisEngine

Why yes it is, but since it three times as good as the plastic Phobos pattern kit it's acctual worth is ÂŁ123. Or if you are less enthusiastic; only two times as good hence ÂŁ82.
Remember the regular fits-together-worse-than-any-FW-resin-tank-I-ever-built plastic raider is ÂŁ41.

so I only buy one and nothing else that month, problem solved.. or maybe just one complementary 5-man marine kit..

Now I have to disagree on this point (as well as a number of other points about portions and what not, but there I'll just let my models do the talking)

I am aware of at least half a dozen marine armies where the player carefully improved the plastic marine kit to be in scale and totally viable to do and play with it.

I did one such army myself:

A friend is almost done making his:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/90/247470.page

And Warseer for example has plenty of other examples.

To me to have an Imperial Guardsman and a Space Marine standing next to each other, same height and volume is fundamentally against the Imagery, Art and Fluff. Yes, I am aware it's GWs fault it is like that, but scaling our marines is far from separated from the player and or hobbyist base.

Yes, like i said. I think we are speaking of different things, scale manipulation was not the thing I was ranting about. When I said 'Truescale' I meant the occurence of terminator kits being smacked up with some greenstuff and some regular SM helmets.. but like I said, it's a personal taste. I really don't like it. I can still appreciate the skill and dedication of the modeller and the work put into the model but I still don't like the finished product.
Can we agree to disagree perhaps?

HOLY GOD-EMPEROR'S SH*TBIN!!! These models kick serious behind! Kudos, man! Subscribed!
Anyways, I do have a few things to point out.
1: The Adepta Sororitas did not exist until the end of the age of apostasy, millenia later. So yeah, slight continuity problem with Octavius. Otherwise, beast.
2: I think that, with how individualized these minis are, they could use some personal backstory. Since it seems you hate true-scaling's guts, you may not have read it, but check out Apologist's thread here on dakka. Pretty sweet models, even sweeter fluff.
3: Also on the true-scaling debate, I distinctly remember you raging against head-to-body size. Take a closer look at most of the art(pull out that damn Imperial Armour and I'll kill you myself) in the codexes, book covers, and even fan-art. The heads are actually quite scaled against the torso.
Anyhoo, if you join the GMS, TELL ME. I will paint the most gorgeous Space Wolf ever seen, with custom greenstuffage and forgeworld bitz, and convince my parents to let me participate, or fething die trying.
Cheers,
Plats

@Asherian Command: Heh, thanks. we'll see.. I have about 50 marines partially assembled/in bits so far but I will start accuring FW kits since I have more or less drained the local gaming community of all the Mk IV / MK IV plasticbits that it's willing to trade.
So I think it's a bit realistic that there will be around 100 marines before I am done with this project.

@platypuscorps: About the adepta sororitas; I am very well aware when the daughters of the emperor was founded and entered the timeline, this is as previously mentioned an army intended for use in both Pre- & Post Heresy game and campaign settings all the way to the 41st Millenium. I had first intended an Eldar as base decoration but well.. one of my friends has this huge SoB army and.. yeah.. I needed a good taunt since the last time he fielded Celestine and I kind of killed her.. a couple of times. And ground his army into the tabletop flock. Right.
GMS? I am afraid I quite don't follow what you mean here. Clarification needed. Speaking of quieries for clarification; "..(pull out that damn Imperial Armour and I'll kill you myself).." you might get on with that one too hmm? I'd like to see you try though, could be amusing.
I am writing a little background that I might post in the future for the company, we'll see.

And can we Please stop bringing up the truescale thingy? I am sorry I wrote about it, there, let's just agree to disagree. there is no 'truth' to it, just personal opinions. Debate Closed.

Nobody really knows if the Alpha's are really loyal or not. Or even if they split into factions at the onset of the Heresy.

Their actions can seem very contradictory and it gives them a menacing air of mystery

All we know is that they do not fit into the Imperiums view of a loyal warrior and they hate Ultramarines and their progeny

Legion gives you a good insight and also the face of treachery in the HH book age of darkness.

Also, 'The Long Game at Carcharias' story (set in M.41) is great inspiration and covers the extinction of the Brazen Claws chapter.

A Little fluff for you!.

++Lencorian II, Segmentum Pacificus++

With a creaking goan the monorail supportpillars buckled and bent, the damaged magna-steel unable to support it's own weight anymore and slowly, almost glacially it toppled into the deep snow. throwing up great clouds of white sprinkled with the red earth beneath.
Captain Octavius brushed a splatter of frozen blood from his left pauldron and adjusted the boldpistol in the orc-hide holster on his hip, the engagement had lasted exactly 53.4 minutes from that the first drop pod had entered the atmosphere to the achivement of all mission objectives, a good day's work all things concidered; a grin blossomed unseen beneath the blank features of his Mk IV helmet. Beneath the craggy outcrop he stood on was a field utter desolation, gunmetal imperial vehicles lay in smoldering ruin in the snowy field and their previous occupants lay scattered around in similar states of bodily dissarray; curtesy of the 6th's guns.

On what had once been a left flank where now a vast track of promethium-scorched earth, the aegis defencelines charred black and crumbled in places where craters betrayed cooked-of munitionstacks; what little remained of the thousand or so frateris militia defenders where bones and heat-bent pieces of lasrifles. Octavius shook his head at the folly of men, especially the ones that 'got religion'; it made them very predisposed to ignore sound tactical doctrine for example. It had been a child's play to bait the Sororitas garrison to sally forth from their gates and attack in the open field. Idiots. He grunted to himself as Apothecary Vanus transmitted his report; jade green letters scrolled across his retinal display. Eight brothers needed the attention of the apothecarion for restorative surgery, Brother Calphon of assult squad zeta had taken a melta-blast at close range and would need augumentic surgery to replace his left leg and arm, Specialist Darius of his own retinue had narrowly dodged a barrage of missiles from an Exorcist tank and the blastwave had broken over 30 bones. it would need some work to set properly and a couple of days rest. the rest was minor details. No fatalities though. He had only comitted 60 operatives to this assult, well enough to sort out the defences of the Inquisitorial base.
A pair of Ophidian class gunships roared overhead towards the ruined imperial outposts in close formation, at their heel followed a much larger Stormbird gracefully. The Ophidians where all angular armorplates and heavy thrusters and where as much assultboats as gunships but they where fast, very fast and highly manuverable. Octavian had once seen two of his pilots run circles around a wing of thunderbolt fighters and gun them down in short order, something that large should not be that agile; but they where. By compairison the Stormbird was huge but it posessed a grace completely lacking in it's smaller cousins, it had been hand-built by master artificiers in the Luna forges and it's hull was all curves and sweeping lines; aerodynamic like a waterdrop in free-fall. This particular one was painted in a shifting lead-grey camouflage and not the Legion's Indigo; the numericals '01' painted in white on it's nose beneath the tandem cockpit together with a rearing white horse. Ah, Messier's bird.

Calum Messier, Son of Alpharius, Captain of the Pale Steed (formerly the Theta) and master of the Formalhaut Void-dock stalked down the stormbird's assultramp into the drifting smoke of burning tanks, his heavy black cloak whipping around his artificier-crafted Mk IV plate in the freezing wind; his signature combimelta slung across his back. He rarely translated dirtside, simply because there was little reason for him to do so. His battlefield was the void, the intricate dance of starships and the frenzied chaos of boardingactions. To him landwars seemed pitifull in scale.
Octavius would be around soon Messier guessed, the captain was a curious soul and he would want to be there as the objective was loaded for transport. Recovery landers where sweeping in to collect drop pods and armor, in the distance Messier could see the bulk of operative Ceanus in his Contemptor pattern dreadnought armor walking towards the closest lander; obviously in a heated discussion with sergeant Daleth of tactical squad Beta walking at his side over some trivia. Those two never changed in that way.
Specialist Samekh mag-locked his chainaxe to the belt of his warplate as he walked up to the voidmaster and crossed his hands across his chest in the sign of the Aquila, a salute the voidmaster returned but with his clenched fist ringing of his chest in the pre-unification salute. "- the objective has been secured and is being brought up as we speak, it is ready for loading." Messier nodded once. "-good, I'll have us all of this speck of dust in 30 minutes. No reason to drag our feet longer than we have to. The imperial taskforce will effect materium translation in roughly 28 hours to my best estimate." Samekh shifted his stance slightly. "-Logars spawn are on shedule for once I take it? none of their usual.. distractions?" Messier shook his head. "- on the marks, without temples and devotional statues for them to defile they are making good progress. The Steed's empyric sensoria are as of now tracking seventeen emergent warprifts in the wordbearers' operational area on the western hemisphere." Samekh nodded and shrugged his cameloline shroud from his pauldrons. "-I'll see to the objective." He turned away and walked towards the ruined gates of the complex's curtainwalls.

The world fell away and was replaced by the midnight satin of the void. The two captains stood by the forward observation screen on the Stormbird as the distant shape of the Pale Steed came into view. Messier Loved his ship, he had commanded it since the legion's commission on Terra and it was his pride an joy. A Repulsive class grand cruiser of sorts, but she differed from the standard pattern on a number of important points; she was longer in the hull by a full fourth and where her sister ships sported a ribbed hull structure her's was smooth except for the inevideble gunturrents, and it was a great deal thicker. Equal to the armored prows of later cruiser designs. And she was fast; she handled like a Sprint trader or a light cruiser with soaped-up engines. Her keel had been laid in the Saturnite shipyards in early M.29 and by contemporary standards she was a relic-ship, a ferocious one at that. In mid- M.36 he had hunted down and slain three daemonships of cruiser displacement in a battle stretching a period of four days close to the gates of varl in the galactic core, without them being able to do more than scratch at his voidshields. It had been a singular test of his skill and patience as a void-hunter.

The Pale Steed drifted silently towards the interstellar void past Lencorian VIII, a ringed gas giant in the system's outer reaches. She was running cold for three days now, listening at the squawking voxtraffic of the imperial warships in orbit around Lencorian II as it died. The Word Bearers where day's gone into the Empyrian and by now the planet they left was a seething Warpspace/realspace overlap, the Imperials had tried to fight it of course but they where too late. All they did was waste men and materials, and curse the sons of logar of course. How very nice of them to join the fight and take the dubious fame that came from murdering a world, a nessecary evil to cover the tracks properly of course. Azure lightning rippled across the Steed's gracefull ethervanes and in her heart the warpenine and gellerfield generators where powering up. With a white-hot flash the Steed ripped a gaping hole in the fabric of space and time and slipped silently into the immaterium; behind her Lencorian II died as the warships in orbit delivered the Imperiums final sanction with a spread of Cyclonic torpedoes.

@young_logan: 1) no, they'll stay clean.. I might do some 'frosting' on them since they are in cold-weather but no. probably not. 2) it's not a raptor, it's based on Sgt. Cronus (ultramarine tank commander) with some plastic additions and a raptor backpack.

Small update!

I have had litteraly zero time to paint this last couple of months, shedule has been craaaazy.. but, snagged some time this morning and got some paint applied roughly where it's supposed to go.

Finally done! well.. he needs two transfers added but I am all out on decal softener so.. it will have to wait.

Lighting is not the best here away from my regular workstation so not all detail comes out all that well.. but, close enough.

Qick wip of the assultsquad sergeant, I am very satisfied with the positioning of this one. it's nice when the pose 'works'.

That's all for now, I'll try to squeece in some more painting-time into my days.

Thank you for the kind words as always. Wow I should really try to post an update, Painting has been at a stand-still lately as the few hours I had to spare has gone into modeling, re-modeling and making custom bases.
It's quite amazing what a little dismembering & reassembling of an SM's legs does for the model. Fantasticly tedious work after the 20th model or so though. Even dared to make a left-handed one with a boltgun.. that was a bit tricky. I know, such heresy.
I even managed to effect some height differentials. Hight? am I mad? people of the 41st Millenium are of equal uniform lenght across their entire genus or species (unless they are old and contain a hint of lead), Everyone knows this!
What's next in this cavalcade of chaotic anarchy? APPROPRIATELY SCALED HANDS AND WEAPONS?! ..where does it end? *sob*

on another note I have been sinning at the workbench,. yes, I know I should concentrate my efforts on the Legion and not pour my time into the never-will-be-finished-because-I-rebuild-it-all-the-time Dark Mechanicus project.. but I have progress..
my deamonengine/defiler/mini-brass scorpion is almost done! well, minus the tail-ish thingy. *gasp* that reminds me.. a few years back I did a Brass Scorpion for a friend when Apocalypse was new and hot off the shelves, where -are- those pictures.. most likely in my stationary computer that is asleep in a
moving-box in my Father's garage.. (because my current 22 m2 worth of living did not come with a storage unit, oh yay me..) I have to go over and dig those out this weekend..

Eeehrm.. let me get back to you with all this..

well this is frustrating.. why can't my phone interface properly with my laptop? a slight non-issue perhaps if you don't take into mind that said phone is holding a cashe of update pics.. wich I can't get into my laptop to upload here..
I'll run to my phone-store and see if they can find me some software to jam into the computor so that the connection sub-routines work properly.

And I who had finished some big bad ..thingies for my Dark Mechanicum army..

Hmm.. the axes.. ah the chainaxes are from the venerable plastic Khorne Berzerker sprues. (oh I remember when those where new and dead shiny.. Plastic AND Multi-part? SWEET! )

Alrighty! By popular demand (well, due to the suggestion of BloodGenisis and the happy howls of Alpharius) I'll try to make a tutorial for my Gunship variant.

Material:
one Valkyrie Plastic Kit (GW)
1mm & 2mm Plasticard
Plastic rod and tubing. 1 to 5mm diameter.
Extensive Bitbox
Assorted Hobbytools etc.

I would like to warn you that this build was not pre-planned in a certain direction, this was a prototype-build where the design litterally grew into shape as it was being built. this lead to that there was a few stop-gap measures involved and that I did not solve some things as smoothly
as I with hindsight realised that I could have done. (damn you hindsight!) In any case I will try to explain as good as I can, I am sure that there are people out there who might improve upon the basic prototype design presented here.

Assemble the Valkyrie main fusilage without the slide doors or the 'front plate' that serves as the attachment for the cockpit, the rear door is intended as the vehicles forward assultramp.
As a basic structure for the hull build a 'box' from the 2mm plasticard with an exterior crossection measurement matches the valkyrie's cargobay interior measurements (yes you will attach it by sliding a piece of the former into the latter).
Needless to say this 'box' needs to be stable, I did this by adding 5mm square plasticard rods to support the box, but you do it however you'd like. Just make sure it is stable. Lenght is down to personal taste, just lay out the assembled 'nose' and wings and measure a pleasing distance. Remember that the rear of the wing is the end of the fusilage.

(somehow I feel I should build an entirely new one and take step by step pictures)

Take the two tailbooms and cut them at their second 'segment' from the front (the front being the thick end) to separate the part you need (wing docking points) from the part that you need for something else later on.
Place a horizontal cut just above and in line with the wing insertion slot, you want the wing to line up with the hull and since the tailboom has a slight tilt to it the upper part needs to be removed.

Now, assemble the basic hull with the Valkyrie cargobay, add the landinggear to the cargobay. Once dry you need to get ready to fix the wings to the hull, I am sure there are people who would want the wings removable but I would NOT reccomend this, the fusilage will be quite heavy in the end and when not on a flyingstand it will divide most of it's weight on the wingtips. it will need inventive reinforcment to hold. before you fix on the wings you have to make sure that the wingtip and 'nose' landinggear line up, I used a small pile of plasticard sheets so I could easily add or subtract a millimetre here and there to make it perfectly level and also being stable enough. once it's level enough for your taste slap on the wings.

As you can see above you use the sliding doors to effectively 'elongate' the basic hull texture up to the engines. the engines are rotated slightly so that the flat side is directed inwards and hidden as much as possible by the wing.
The canard wings are in my case parts cut from the Drop Pod kit because I had two to spare but they could easily be scratchbuilt from plasticard.

Moving on to the cockpit, this is a bit tricky since I do not have pictures of -how- I made the cuts, just how it turned out. but you should be able to make it out from the pics.

Essentially you cut the cockpit sides (before assembly) with a slight angle so it will sit nicely on the hull, then take the bottom pieces and assemble them as usual, flip the piece around backwards and then cut the top cockpit piece to fit.
Use the two leftover pieces of the tailbooms and fix them to the hull as on the pictures to provide assembly points for the tail rudders and to double as secondary airintakes for the main engine.

Scrounge through your bitz box for two Rhino APC side doors (or steal them from a friend or equivalent source). add a 1mm strip of plasticard along one side of the door and it will fit snugly into the side door slots. or you could scratchbuild it from plasticard quite easily.
Don't worry that the bottom part of it sticks out where the hull tilts inwards, this is soon to be adressed.

Take the Valkyrie's front plate for the main hull and stick it to the back of the hull, it will overlap slightly but don't worry, it's supposed to.

Add a strip of 1mm plasticard on top of the cut tailboom parts that fixes the wings to the hull, and produce a plate in a suitable shape from 2mm plasticard for the nose deck, shape is up to personal taste but this is how I did it.

Add the Flightstand dockingpoint here. I have also added a fan unit from the plastic Vindicator kit as a vertical thruster.

You need a primary engine exhaust, either you build one from scratch or find a suitable bit somewhere. I used the Drop Pod Thruster because, again, I had a spare one from a massacred pod. Assemble in a suitable fashion.
Also do Not assemble the tailrudders as on the picture, this was revised later and is a thing I will get back to.

The hull need to line up with the 'valkyrie parts' so the following additions needs to be made with 2mm plasticard, I am sorry but I do not have the measurements. you have the basic hull lines to follow though so it should not be all that complicated.
A slanting plate on each side and a bottom hull one as per pictures.

End Part One.

No this is correct, I posted these in an old thread while I built the damn thing, they are here again to help visualise the construction stages of the tutorial.

On another note I just managed to sync my phone to my laptop via my Wlan and get those pwetty (highly subjective I know) pics of what I did a few weeks ago with my dark mechanicum army.

WIP of the Archmagos Venatos (that a; needs some additional detail and cables and b; will be run as a Daemon Prince with Mark of Tzeentch and Bolt of Change. hence the gun)

So, this is a combat strider that my fevered mind produced over a late afternoon running on tar-like coffe and superglue fumes to the Tunes of Electric Six's "Danger! High Voltage.". (Defiler with Havoc Launcher)

Second Defiler that is still only halfway done, (Reaper autocannon, Twinlinked Heavy Flamer)

And now it's like this, in a paper box in a cellar somewhere. It's really not a priority project. maybe like number something something after my Alpha legion & dark mechanicum projects, eldar army that needs to recive those last dregs of paint to make it ready and
then there's that Black Templar army that needs re-painting. somewhere after this comes the trimmed-and-ready-for-rebuilding-ordinatus.

It's on the way Alpharius, I'll have some time to waste up to the end of the year so there is some painting planned into my calendar.
And making bases.. making a fewustom ones are fun but making 40+ is getting on my nerves. I am seriously concidering buying a few resin bases to mix it up with.
I have been a bit occupied with modelling (some cases of re-modelling) my two tactical squads and the devastator squad.. currently converting two legionnaires with autocannons and it's really tricky to make weapons carried on the shoulder look 'right'.

Post by: STC_LogisEngine

Well well well, the holidays are over, new madness is on the loose; armed and dangerous and guess what? It's Update Time!

True to form I have been a little impulsive, (when will I EVER learn? ) painting a few assultmarines for the legion about halfway done, the same with a landspeeder typhoon awaiting the final green highlights.
Quite some time has been plowed into another project that I started a while back, quite a while acctually. Since it was mostly in sawed-up, unassembled parts I thought I'd give it a go and finish the damn modelling stage at least.
So yeah, I got that Storm Raven (AKA 'the flying brick') on the releaseday and promptly started ''improving'' the design, a design that lended some inspiration from MajorTom's Stormraven project for his Blood Angels. (''Shamelessly stole and ran away laughing'' is more accurate but it doesn't sound as nice as 'lended' now does it? )
It's mostly done, it needs a little more texture work with plasticard and some gap-filling but otherwise I am quite satisfied. I am a firm beliver in the thesis that the dreadnought goes INSIDE the dropship during atmospheric entry, afterall it does not have the 'reinforced cheramite' rule to make it melta-proof now does it?

Pictures Yay!

So, it seems I have a new project too! I am quite certain it is my 4th active painting project sharing time with the Legion, Eldar and Black Templars. Yes my bwunny wabbits; we are going to the Badab Sector!

What fresh hell is this I hear you moan, well it is a small one, promise.
So, Yesterday I finally took the time to jog (take the car) down to my local hobby store (premium store! yay!) for a fresh pot of snot green, some plastic rod and hopefully Sandy Mitchell's latest Ciapas Cain novel 'The Last Ditch'. steamingly fresh from the Black Library's printing presses.
General small-talk about this and that commenced and then the storeowner (very talented hobbyist and general fun guy) drops a little hellstrike missile on me: ''-by the way, we are going to play through the Badab War campaign during february. We'll do two-man teams for each game and everyone has a 1000 point army. so 2k per side. we are 12-13 people so far, care to join?''
What do you say to that? Yes ofc!.. so I spent yesterday going through my bitboxes to see if I could scrounge up 1K points worth of spacemarines, toy around a bit with an armylist and reading through my Badab War books.
I was 'encouraged' to pick the renegade side since irregular participations would be balanced up with the Store's resident spacemarine company wich happened to be Salamanders.
So, Astral Claws? I thought. Mmmmm could work.. Partly because yellow is my mortal enemy and the executioneers' chapterbadge would be an complete ass to free-hand.. and silver-blue-gold is a nice colourcombination.

Today I have been doing some colour-testing, wash-mixing, setting a small hamster on fire with a spare bottle of acetone alcohol and eventually finishing a testmodel for the colourscheme.
Took me about three hours including waiting-time for washes to dry and 4 coffebreaks. Some highlights got a little thick and I forgot how the 'tyrant's claw' icon looked like halfway through painting it (don't ask) but the overall look is quite okay and it's an acceptable tabletop standard.
I think I should be able to narrow the time down to 2hours per model now that I have the method nailed down properly (somewhat) and can start painting them in groups to eliminate drying downtime etc.

So, Pictures: Brother Legarius of Tactical Squad Perseus; Strike Force Ixiad, Bellerophon's Fall Massacre.

That's all for now, more in the works!

Forge World has the transfers if you're looking for them
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space_Marine-Vehicle-Accessories/ASTRAL_CLAWS_TRANSFER_SHEET.html

The only problem is that the ones you are after only make up about one third of the purchase

Yeah, I know. I can do without the FW transfers I hope, I am just going to have 21 infantry models and 2 tanks in this army so buying a whole A4 transfer sheet might be a little exessive.
I need to find a Boltgun Metal primer spray too.. the basecoating takes forever and I do not want to basecoat the predator and landraider with a brush. Damn you GW for discontinuing your colour primers!

The Army painter plate metal primer is pretty close, it's a touch brighter but if you either wash the recesses or airbrush a wash over the whole thing it would tone it down enough to fit in the force? I've used it before and it's not bad, but you need to shake the hell out of it and be quite careful when spraying as it can get some flat spots on large flat surfaces, other than that one i'm not sure if there's any others worth looking into?

I'll check it out, might need to adjust the wash-mix to a slightly darker shade if the army painter primer is a touch brighter but that should really be a non-issue.
Thanks!

Yes he does doesn't he? ''that's not a knife, THIS is a Knife!'' I am very pleased with how it turned out once my initial self-critisism subsided, wich ususlly takes about a day. Before that it's all 'meh' as I tend to fixate on individual lines instead of the greater whole, like '' ..yeah but I am not all that happy about how that highlight on the upper part of his left backpack vent turned out.'' it's quite silly to be honest. But yay for the blood-splatter, I got to repeat that on some more models.

Alright then, I'll shift a legionaire or two into the painting pile among the Astral Claws. Maybe even paint that landspeeder I primed too if you are nice and bring me a modest offering of kittens.

And I can post an Astral Claws tutorial in a day or two if you want, with step-by-step pictures of course.. but again.. it's a bit dependant on those kittens..

Post by: STC_LogisEngine

Heh, thanks Baiyuan. You're no slob with the tools of the trade yourself

quick update today, didn't paint much at all since I got stuck modelling things.. Again.

Terminator sergeant in the works, metallics are as good as done, some tidying up in a few places and the weathering left to go so I just got 'the rest' of the model left.

Did some work on the dark mechanicum =][= warband, the wraith is done (barring some GS-gap filling) while the other two has a few last touches left before they are ready for the painting que.

I found some scratch in a box and whipped up this farseer for no good reason, might give it some gs-work to give it some rune armor in the future but it's not prioritized.

I dug out an old FW inquisitor model from the boxes too, that guy from IA8: the Anphelion Project and I recon he needs a warband too.. mostly since I had some ideas that didn't work with the dark mechanicum warband.
They'll need a touch of GS and then they are ready to go.

Acolyte/armsman wip.

Deathcult Assassin wip
I'll 'round' the ears on this one and exchange the blasterpistol for a laspistol, maybe lenghten the hair with a round of greenstuff, not sure yet to be honest.

I have no frakkin' idea what this one'll be.. right now it's living completely in the fun-zone, might be able to use it for something. Maybe a pair of scourge-wings will improve the pose?

Update time, small volume of kittens brings small update! enjoy your fix Alpharius.

@ Low Key: the wraith's hands are made from the close combat attachments and addons from the dark eldar khabalite warriors sprue.

Despite some unfortunate accidents the Assult squad sergeant is finished. accidents like the pin breaking off and the whole finished model hitting the floor into roughly a gazillion pieces was less fun. but repairs have been made and here he is.
Working (and converting) with metal models is a friggin' nightmare I tell you!

Do you understand what a nightmare it is to replicate the paintscheme I use on a landspeeder is? I sure didn't! the damn thing consists of lines, lines and angles! My hands hurt dammit.
it's still a bit WIP since I need to go over the metal parts with two more licks of paint and add some detail here and there. But almost done.. almost.

Managed to touch up the metal today and add some detail to the crew, just need to finish the base and add a little detail on the pilot's dashboard and it's all done.
I am quite satisfied even if the pic is a little iffy, it caught a lot of flare so it is really a shade darker than it appears to be, more akin to the assultmarine.

I'll post that short tutorial on painting silver on the astral claws tomorrow I think.

Got a FW-order placed for some bolters so I can finally finish all those two tactical squads and get to painting) and some mk V heresy armor marines. Threw in some stuff for the =][= too, I have an interesting idea I'll try out on this little Stormraven but I need some resin stuff to hack to bits before I can try it.

Plasticard, I never use foamboard in models partly because it's a bit tricky to get hold of for me and it's not as tough as the plasticard. Great for building terrain though.

The random works of STC: Alpha Legion, Ravenguard, Superheavies! @ 2012/01/23 07:55:19

Post by: STC_LogisEngine

Layering, when you build the structure you make it a millimeter too small in all dimensions so that you can add a top layer for indents and lines from 1mm plasticard.
I guess using good tools help but I only use a pen, steel ruler, matknife, GW leafsaw and a couple of files and drills. I however want one of those cutters with adjustable 360-degree rotaton to make exact cuts in the plasticard because sometimes you need that perfect 33.5* angled line.
Being stubborn about making the detail right also helps

But there has been some paintin' too! Dreadnought paintin'!

This little fella is almost done, the base needs a touch of snowand I need to glue on a searchlight and smokelauncher that I painted separately. might get it some more weathering too. Also lenses and I need to freehand the chapter logo.. *sigh* it never ends

Repainting this old man too, the outside of the cape will be bone-whiteish once I am done, sword and backpack painted separately.

Ah what the hell,.. Random UPDAAAAATE!

Reinforcement to the Inquisitor's retinue; Battlesister! yes-yes! heavy too, 100% white metal.

Marines are being cranked off the assembly-line. No puny chainsword here; this is a 'I'll gak you up real bad mr. dreadnought!'-chainsword.

Now who are these guys? Mk IIX Errant Powerarmor and Plasmagun-extravaganza? You'll see,. yesss You'll ssseeee! .. pressssshiousss..

Now this (in parts) dread is the first one I ever bought, back years ago when it first came out in plastic see. it needs a makeover.. and a makeover it shall have!

oh yes, I also made a unit of scouts from leftover scoutparts and the landspeeder tempest crew. and a few sniper rifles. Pew pew!

I also managed to paint a little. (and when I mean little I mean just that.) The terminator sergeant now has the crux terminatus icons on his leg and shoulderpad painted.

Hmmm.. speaking of painting. I slapped some paint on this Dire Avenger as a testmodel for my aspect warriors a while back. What do you guys think? too dark? too shiny? some CnC on this would be hightly appreciated.
Glare is making a partial mess of the white and gold but the pics have different glare so the detail should be visable on at least one pic. Maybe I should build a simple light-box or something..

That's all folks! Have at it!

I really dig the color scheme on the dire avenger, though some people might argue it looks like the most common recent scheme for dark eldar. I think it works very well and in combination with the gold looks mysterious, yet not too sinister.

@Swordwind: Nooooes! continue painting, practise makes perfect. You should have seen the crap I produced just a few years ago If you are struggling I reccomend reading the 'Eavy Metal Masterclass articles (avalible at GW's homepage) and using reference material when you paint. Reference material is really important.

Oh and Peter Jackson has brought in Comedian/actor/general badass Billy Connolly to The Hobbit cast, he'll play the dwarf Dain Ironfoot. (badass cousin of Thorin Oakenshield)
''-We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connolly, the Big Yin himself. With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can’t wait to see him on the Battlefield!'' -Peter Jackson

I buy my plasticard at my local GW Premium Partnership store, it's 1mm thick and it's from one of those galeforce nine plasticard bundles. card has been cut with an .. hmm.. its like a thin-bladed matknife with a segmented blade so you can break of sections of it once the edge goes dull, dunno what it's called in english.

Bleh, what a day. Basing, adding little details and then priming 50-ish models. I am also 1:3d done with painting a predator for the astral claws army. final highlights and weathering left to go. and then those blasted chapter icons that I need to freehand.

But I also finished the dreadnought I was touching up with some plasticard and stuff. Well there's some minor gapfilling (if I can be bothered) left to do and I need to fix it's weapon arms ( CCW, Missilelauncher, Plasmacannon, assultcannon and Multimelta ) but that's fairly minor stuff that'll be done quickly.

So,.. How about a pic eh?
Yes, I primed it so i could see any gaps in the hull clearer, maybe I can touch those up with some of that fancy liquid greenstuff? It also got a little taller.. must have happened when I repositioned it's legs and due to the added bulk of the new hull.
But no matter, it's not likely it'll loose out on any coversaves anyway. Second pic added to show height-differences.

That's all today folks!

Nice job on the dread. The head really looks like he's smiling though.

I can't say I like the official GW dreadnought chainfist - the Forgeworld one looks much better (speaking from experience). The dread looks kickass though - I couldn't tell it from the FW ironclad until I scrolled up and saw it was a conversion!

Yeah, the GW chain fist is a bit wonky. Both arms look a little small against the larger hull, so they might need to be enlarged, too. Of course, if you're doing five, it may be excusable not to

Oh I am going to add some plating to syncronize the look of the arms with the hull, I am not all that happy with the plastic Ironclad legplates though, I'll fix up a pair of new ones from plasticard so it'll give it an uniform look.
And I concur on the looks of the GW chainfist. I have been musing if I should scratch-build one based on the FW-design, not sure if i can pull it off though but I think I will at least give it a try. The standard plastic head doesn't work here though, it looks way way too small.
I'll see if I can get hold of a spare FW dreadnought head somewhere, maybe someone who bought the cyclone ML upgrade for their contemptor dread has a spare head, who knows.

Of course he's smiling! it's been in shambles in a dark box for years and now it gets pulled out and recives a complete makeover. you'd be smiling if it happened to you!

"Yay! Sunshine and death!"

I'd think making a chainfist wouldn't be that difficult, especially if you used everything above the elbow of the original one. I think that if you cut out a jagged chain-edged piece of plasticard in the desired shape, you could then use two more thick sheets for the housing. (I hope that gets my point across...)

Nah, no half-measures. I'll replicate either FW's Ironclad chainfist or chaos dreadsnought chainfist. In either case it will mean ripping the 'arm' from the shoulder and start from scratch. (pun intended )
