Hi all - old timer here - used to play Rogue Trader and 2nd edition wh40k, haven't been playing for 15 years, and have recently been reintroduced to the hobby - I work with children, and through this I've seen some of the new models, which are amazing. I've been converting some Orks, but recently I've become enamoured with the grey knights - I especially like the dread knight, but not the baby hanger thing - so I decided to make it my own.

I've only used parts from the Dread Knight kit, except the banner/loincloth, which is from the GK terminators, and the chestpiece, which comes from an ork deff dread - oh yeah, and the head, which comes from an old Epic titan. Please excuse the poor pic, I'll try to get a better one, once it's painted. I basically just used assorted parts (most of which are parts for the psycannon) to build a chest, and did some hacking and cutting to reposition the kit, so it looks more dynamic. I'm pretty pleased with it overall, but any suggestions are welcome. It's still a wip.

Thanks! I've just tried taking a couple more - this is probably the best I can do right now (it's night here, and I don't have much in the way of direct light in my apartment):

And a shot with some of his little friends - I've opted for a different paint scheme, since... Well, since I wanted to paint copper/gold armour. :-)

EDIT: Never mind, you've fixed them or I've stopped being a gak, which ever it was (I'd put money on it me being a gak tbh).

Absolutely love this man. I cannot wait to see this painted. Looking at your termis, I reckon it'll be epic.

You know what? That looks really good. Your Terminators look ace, and make me confident that you can paint it well enough to do the conversion justice.

Like everyone else has said love what you have done with the conversion. Though I had a few smaller questions or ideas to throw out too you. Far as the... what looks to be a Bloodletter head on a stake. From the back picture of the conversion it looks like you are aiming to make this inter-changeable are you going to be switching heads once and awhile dependent on chaos opponent? Or maybe you had an idea of throwing on a banner as well? Just a question / idea rather but lovely conversion man will be nice to see that in bronze.

That is bloody inspired mate! So much so that when I get home from work I'll be copying your pics as inspiration for my own eventual DK.

Your terminators also look great. You should sets these guys up in a P&M blog with more and regular photo updates.

Post by: PraetorDave

It looks really awesome, but I personally don't like the blood letter trophy on the back. I just think it isn't something a grey knight would do. It might be your orks coming through. IMO grey knights are too "noble" to show petty trophies like that. Again just my opinion, take it or leave it. But its still amazing.

I´m doing 2 dreadknight´s and I´m glad I saw your now ( before continuing on the idea I had ).

I know now I will put a head/helmet on each , great work and also great painting .

Post by: GuitaRasmus

Viridian @ PraetorDave: I'm not completely sure about the head on the pole either - I'm not to sure that it fits the character of the GK, but since the trophys come with the termis, I thought "oh well...". But I guess you're right - I just need to find the right banner, since I dont want it to be so big, that it'll take away from the rest.

Thanks very much guys, I'm overwhelmed by the response. Please do use any of the ideas on your own DKs - I would love to see what you come up with.

Just a couple shots of it, primed and ready for paint:

Closeup of the titan head - I think it works really well here. Good thing I have 3-4 more lying around. :-)

Since I already had the paper and camera tripod out, I also took a couple of shots of my terminators. Funny - my paint jobs seemed a lot cleaner, late at night, when looking at them by electric light. ;-) Daylight and closeups are very revealing - oh, well, I'll just have to practise more. :-)

(Edit: They're not entirely finished - I just based them to play in a necromunda type skirmish with the kids where I work)

Thanks! It's nothing special really, just multiple thin layers of skull white - probably about 3-4 thin layers.

I've begun the painting - mostly the large surfaces. It's harder than I thought to blend the highlights on such large surfaces. There's a long way to go, but it'll be pretty cool in the end, I think.

Your Dreadknight is honestly the among the coolest looking ones I've ever seen. I'm so glad that there are people like you who take a disappointing kit and turn it into something really cool.

Love the colour scheme. Copper against teal/jade... delicious.

Its cool, but I can't get past the upside down titan on his chest. I really think you should hve filled that in with GS. Looks just silly.

Edit: And one more thing, why didn't you use the bigger shield on his shoulder? I think it would have been alittle better looking with the bigger shield. Would look more like a bigger terminator, IMHO.

Thanks guys!

Balsak: Thought somenone would notice. :-D It's the codpiece from the original pilot. Actually the new codpiece on the banner, is a shoulder pad, so it also has a lot of upside down words. I guess I'll fix it sometime. I don't have access to green stuff right now.

The reason why I used a small shield, was to make sure it wouldn't attract too much attention, away from the head, since the head isn't incredibly large.

Feel free to steal any and all ideas. I can't really take credit for the loincloth, I saw it somewhere on the net.

I had been planning to do that same color scheme, but you did it masterfully!

Another thing, With this scheme, it feels almost steampunk. This gave me inspiration for another dreadknight. Where the pistons are replaced by cogs!

By removing the highlighted pistons, and then placing appropriately sized cogs in it's place!

Byte wrote:This thread is inspiring to me.

I'm more of a modeler and painter, than a player, so I probably won't make another one. However, I can try to explain how I did it.

I've tried to put together a pic, so you can see where the parts come from. As mentioned earlier, the head is from an old Epic Titan, but I'm sure you could find a suitable replacement - maybe a toy?

Here goes:

Please ask, if you're in doubt. Some of the parts have been cut up a bit, but it should make sense.

Edit: "5" on the pic, are GK terminator shoulder shields filed smooth.

I repositioned the legs, by drilling the the inserts in the hip, so they became a ball joint, and carefully carved the hip joint on the thighs into a ball as well. The feet are already ball jointed, so that's pretty easy. It's a great simple way to make it more dynamic.

Would love to know a more detailed description on which colours you chose for the copper tone, and how you painted it, since i will most likely use it as a contrast to the greyish tone off-white im planning to use as the main colour for my coming kniggets

It's from the old plastic Epic warlord Titan. They're great plastic models, considering the time they came out (about 1990?), and I've used them for chaos dreadnoughts myself, back in the day. It also came with an alternative head, which is even better for chaos:

I'll see if I have a couple of the alternative heads lying around - if you pm me your adress, I'll send 'em to you, if you're interested?

Now THIS I want to see. Being an old chaos space marine player (Nightlords and Khorne, 20.000 points. Yep. 20k), I would love to see what you come up with. Please post in this thread. :-)

Thanks! It's really simple, actually. I haven't gotten brave enough to try NMM, I love the looks of it, but I'm still stuck on the metallics. I use a base coat of tin bitz, with a heavy highlight (almost completely covering the tin bitz) of (dwarf?) bronze, and a final highlight of shining gold. It can be drybrushed, if you're in a hurry, and look pretty good.

Thanks a lot, all! I really really appreciate all the positive feedback - what a great forum, and a great spirit. :-)
I've gotten a bit further on the painting, and I'll try to get some pictures up in the weekend. :-)

This is really wonderfully done.

I too find the upside down TITAN a little off-putting but the model as a whole is so WOW it's not a real bother.

Your choice of colors and subtle modifications really set it apart, so much so, you'd never be tempted to think Dread Knight conversion in the first place.

If I might, while I am a huge fan of the FW Contemptor and own several, this model evokes more of what an IoM Dreadnought should have looked like in the glorious past.

Check out my Berzerker Dread as well - I think it's my best work to date:

Dude, you are *awesome.* I may just have to buy a Dreadknight now. Thanks for the numbered sprue chart too, as it helps someone with no skill, like myself.

Quick question, those beams coming out of the DKs shoulders and attaching to the arm further down... I was thinking of just having the bottom round gear in the shoulder and leaving off the rest. Seems like that would be relatively easy to do, right? I haven't seen a DK in real life, but I imagine those beams aren't necessary for the model to stay together, and can be left off?

Now that's what it should have looked like. I absolutely hate the baby carrier monstrosity that it currently is.

Yeah, my idea was to make the DK look even more like a giant terminator. I'd just put one of those circular gears in there, instead of all of the joints and beams that come off of it now. Feel like I'd need to put something in there, otherwise there'd be huge holes in the shoulders!

This model is everything the original Should have been! I absolutely think this is the best conversion of a Dreadknight I have seen.

I intend (when funds allow) to buy one and convert it to make an Imperial knight Paladin with Battlecannon and DCCW.

When the Dreadnight model was first released I thought GW had taken a daft turn and produced a Transformer. Yours is definitely how this model should have been presented. To me it truly captures the 40k vibe, wish I could paint like that! Well done mate!

Finally an update - sorry about it taking so long, but I've been busy working and playing concerts - I just got my custombuilt guitar, so I've been playing a lot, and not painting so much. However, it is getting closer to completion:

While it is a stunning model, please don't revive threads more then a month old.

It is always good to revive old threads when they contain such nice conversions , especially if I haven't seen them before

Thats cool, nice work.

I do like the dreadknight mini but the baby carrier is stupid.

Yours looks like a proper knight. The colour scheme and banner are also awesome.

Your Dreadknight is honestly the among the coolest looking ones I've ever seen. I'm so glad that there are people like you who take a disappointing kit and turn it into something really cool.

Love the colour scheme. Copper against teal/jade... delicious.

Yeah, I agree with the Swede. Nice work and great color scheme.
