I recently aquired a load of random bits and bobs from a friend who used to car boot. I finally got round to going through it all and cutting the bits off the sprue and seperating out into seperate containers. There were also a few metal models thick in paint.

I had been thinking for a while of building a command squad, and decided that i might be able to kit bash something together with my new aquisistions. So i have decided to start off with an Apothecary as i found a redactor in some of the sprue.

First off i had to clean up the metal miniature, so i soaked it in Oven cleaner for 48 hours then went at it with a tooth brush, then finally picked out the stobborn bits with a craft blade.

I did not have any paper clips or brass rod, to pin this guy with, but i did happen to have some tooth picks, that also match the drill bit i have in my kit. Im not sure where the 'cod piece' is from or what it is meant to be fore but i thought it looked quite cool, and i neede to change the model so it was not just a normal Marine with a redactor.

Dry fitted the arms on to the pin, i think that i will either need to trim the pin a bit more or drill the hole a bit deeper in the arm, as ther eis quite a gap. Either that or i will use some green stuff to fillt he gap. I was plannin on painting the arms seperatly before i glued them on, so using green stuff would be out, also i need to attach the shoulder pads at some point, so i may need to glue it together and green stuf fit anyway (although one shoulder pad ends up very close to the helmet which would be aquward)

More to come once my Son is asleep tonight and after my D&D session has finished ... hopefully.

Had a fiddle with my normal colour scheme, and came up with this for the Apothecary.

This is the standard scheme for my army.

What do people think about the scheme for the Apothacary?

I have continued to fiddle, i have bashed up a back pack for my Apothacary using a melta grenade as a light and pined it onto the top.

I then started working on a Company Champion. Looking through the bits i had aquired i was able to find a pair of legs and a chest peice that looked different to my standard marines, therefore allowing my champion to stand out.

I was then used the terminator combat shield and pinned it to an arm that i had trimmed the hand off. For the power weapon i took an axe from a fantasy WH Dwarf, and clipped off the end, and drilled through my champions hand so i could run a paper clip right through. i then drilled into the shaft of the axe and into the cocktail stick i was using for the shaft extension. (still thinking about using some green stuff on the cocktail stick. Then glued it all together. (The plastic looks a bit dark in the picture, but thats from the auto adjust)

I then blue tacked them into position to check i was happy with the positioning.

Decided on a plasma pistol for my Company standard bearer, was not much more to do to him at this time.

Decided to take a couple of photos of my Captain, hes mid paint, i still need to touch up the banner, and paint his face. I also want to do some highlights on the bleached bone parts and paint the wax seals.

I got a Finecast Jump chaplin for my birthday, its my first time working with resin. I am amazed at the level of detail, and a little daunted about painting him. So as i have been making up other models, i thought i might as well get him prepped so that i can base coat them all at once.

My plans for his paint scheme are as follows;

I am not sure if i will jsut use super glue to attach the jump pack and other arm, or whether i will pin him. I will probaably pin him. Which will be much easier now that i have bought a hobby drill. I was just uding the drill bit between my fingers before so was not supper aucrate or straight. But i was in the GW store and they were going for £8.20 so i thought about it and then saw one in a hard wear store for £3 so bought that instead.

And re the super glue on resin, it doesn't need pinning, one of the best things about resin!

The cloak on the AOBR captain is suh-wheat, really nicely done. I also like your improvisation on the conversions, being a bit of an improviser myself lol.

Yes they are a Blood Ravens Successor - Called the Striking Skulls. Not worked out the fluff yet really, just the paint scheme.

jirc wrote:And re the super glue on resin, it doesn't need pinning, one of the best things about resin!

Ahh thanks, that will save me a bit of time.

Perkustin wrote:The cloak on the AOBR captain is suh-wheat, really nicely done. I also like your improvisation on the conversions, being a bit of an improviser myself lol.

Thank you, i had fun painting the cloak. I really like the way it has come out. I had great fun putting the champion together as well. I am looking forward to painting them all.

My plan for tonight is to base them all, ready for under coating. That and work out a good way of spraying the smaller parts. I may use the pinning holes to put them up on a paper clip and then glue some paper clips into my spraying board. Sadly i forgot to base my captian before i started painting him, so i will have to be carefull when i do that.

Well i have managed to give all the models a nice base coat of Chaos black and they are sat on my desk ready for me to start painting once i have finished my captain. But while they were drying i realised that i was a veteran short so i started bashing something up. I decided i wated him to use 2 power fists (from what i can read this is within the rules, someone please correct me if i am wrong ) and leaping into the air ready to smash a xeno.

On a side not, i hade stripped off an old terminator, and found a pair of lighting claws so had prepped him up ready for them. they all received a coat of chaos black over the weekend as well. But it was not untill i was looking at them again that i realised that they did not actailly have any shoulder pads on the arms and all the pads i have are for normal marines. mmmm. I may have to try out my green stuff skills.

Well I have uploaded the photos. But in the middle of updating my blog my PC mysteriously turned it's self off?! The only clue to what had happened was my 1 year old son staring up at me with his finger on the power button looking excited. I'll try and post them later at lunch. (posted from my mobile)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Well I thought I would try this from my mobile while waiting for my wife in the car.

I used some skull White on the captains bolted to tie him in withthe flamed in my tactical squad.

I then did a base colour of talan flesh mixed with some gryphon sepia and devlon mud on his face, I also coloured his eyes in White. The excess White will be tidyed up as I highlight later. I then gave it a wash of devlon mud. (I normally use flesh wash but wanted to try something different)

While the wash was drying I gave his hair a coat of codex grey and also the strap on the bolted got a coat.

As I had some grey on my pallets I mixed in some chaos black, to do some highlighting on my Chaplin. I then have his hands and feet a coat of liche purple and added some bleached bone (my favourite colour ATM) to the parchment and his shoulder pads and the odd skull.

Well i got some more done last night, i managed to put some highlights on to the company standard, and i painted up the purity seals, as well as painting up the base. I also added some highlights to his face. All thats left to do is to paint up some hihghlights on the stone on the base and add some static grass, and add a pupil to his eye (i use a pen for this bit)

Sorry for the quality of the pics, i am only able to use my iphone as we have misplaced the charging lead for our camera and its non standar USB ;(

While i had the greens on my pallet i decided to paint up the purity seals on my chaplin as well, as he was out in my painting station as well. I also gave the bleached bone parts another thin coat. I also gave the base a coat of Brown, again as i had it on my pallet from paintign my captain.

Well i finished off my Captin last night. But when i went to take photos this morning, the weather was horrible outside so there was not enough light. I tried using a little LED light i have, but the photos have come out all blurry :s i really need to sort out my propper camara and find the power lead ;(

So as i had finished i decided to make a start on my Company Champion, as i am entering him into a competition here on Dakka. So i gave him a base coat of Red Gore, and then 2 coats of Blood Red. Followed by a couple of coats of Liche Purple on his hands, feet and loin cloth.

This morning before work, i thought about doing a wash. But i decided that i need to decided on what colour i am painting his power weapon. I will either do it with a lightning effect similar to my Captin, or will fade from Dark Angels Green up to Skull white on the edge. I think i will do a test peice on the second choice to see how it comes out.

I love that power sword! The color is awesome. I also really like the bone color on the gun plate. Looking very nice! Congrats on finally getting a hand drill as well... I got one just last month finally. It sure beats holding the drill bit in my hands...

I like your marines, makes me want to pick back up some of my marines and do a bit of work on them again. Also, lets see more of your Necrons! Or is this thread purely for your SM's?

I managed to get some more painting done last night, in between my son screaming due to his teeth cutting :( Gave a blazing orange high light to my Company champion and also put on the first coat of bleached bone on the shoulder pads and to the seals. There is also some on the shield but I have not photographed that yet (sorry :( )

I took a photo last night in artificial light

And then I took a photo again this morning in the natural light.

I am a little annoyed at the moment, as I can not find the charging cable for my real camera :*( so my photos are having to be taken on my iPhone, and they are not coming out as clear as hoped. (or as clear as they look on the phone)

I also put a further coat of bleached bone onto my Chaplin, I think that should be enough ready for a wash tonight. Also I am considering doing a further highlight on the black as the one I have done is rather muted. I may do an even lighter one. BUT I think this is from looking at the photos rather than the actual model. I will see how it looks after the Gryphon sepia wash on the bleached bone bits

samwellfrm wrote:Your painting style is pretty cool. I look forward to seeing more

Thank you, i learnt a lot from reading the Tutorials on this site

Lord_J wrote:That's a really cool looking powersword! I'm not sure about the purple boots though, a little too much disco for a marine I think

Thanks ... but what is wrong with Disco? lol

NakedBatBoy wrote:You took off the mold lines of your Champion though, right?

I love bleached bone and Grypon sepia, its my fav combo atm Yes i took off the mold lines Why have you spoted one i missed?

In regards to the Necorns, i will have to get some more photos, there are some in my gallery. But they were my first army and i am not so happy with the painting.

But here is a pic.

My plan was to dry brush over the black under coat, to give a worn and aged look. Which at the time i thought looked good. I have painted a squad of warriors since, and Painted them in boltgun, and then done a babadab black wash and a chesnut ink wash, then dry bruushed chainmail to pick out the highlights. I will ahve to take some phtos of them.

For the yellow i did a chestunt ink wash over the yellow. I wanted it to pool in places and not just the recess, to simulate oxidation and tarnishing. This is purposful rather than sloppy painting lol. ... well sort of

As always C&C always welcome

I just saw the mold lines on your axe which was way back in WIP.

I haven't seen any since then. Champion's looking good! I'm looking forward to seeing it better once you find your camera cable.

I really like the different look with your necrons. I saw that picture in your gallery, but didn't see anymore! Although the orange/yellow/chestnut wash look seems a tad bright for rust, I still really am drawn to the color. It really pops and paired with the silver makes it all the better IMO.

NakedBatBoy wrote:I just saw the mold lines on your axe which was way back in WIP.

Hehe, yes i have removed the mould line although looking back at the axe now under coated, not perfectly :(

Well i added some Bleached Bone highlights over the grypon sepia wash, and then some 1:1 Bleached Bone:Skull White highlights in key areas. As i had them both on my palete i did the same to my Chaplin. I took photos of both but sadly the Champion one came out naff. So i will ahve to take that again. But the chaplin came out ok.

I still need to paint the chains over the cloth/tabard and do the highlights on the purple parts (hands and feet) urm ... and I need to do his eyes .. and do some highlights on his mace/other chains. and of course finish off the base. So very nearly done. But I am not sure if I should add a further highlight onto the black armour. Opinions?

But good news, i have ordered a new cable for my camera, so i will get some good photos up as soon as it arives. I will also try and convert an old cardboard box in to a nice light box. I just need a second lamp lol.

Thanks to the new cable i was able to charge my real camera and take some better photos. But England being England it was peeing it down with rain this morning. :( So even though i have some clearer pictures, there is not the greatest ammount of light ever. So hopefully they are good enough.

First off my Jump Chaplin, he still needs gluing together. BUT i have a descision to make. The rim of his shoulder pads is currently black. In my normal Marines it is black. I am not sure if i should leave it black as it is (and add some highlights) Or to paint it red like the main colour of my marines. Mmmmmm ...

Last night there was some Panic!! When removing the chaplin from my paintpot with blue tack painting stand, he stapped off the base :( luckily the resin broke where the foot joined the base so i was easily able to pin him back on. It just act as a reminder to me that resin is not as tough as plastic and iahve to treat him with more respect. Rather than just lever him off from the top.

My Company Champion is finished. He is all painted up and the base is done All i need to do is glue him together and glue some static grass onto the base. I am very pelased with how his shield came out. I am glad that i made the descision to trim my fine detail paintbrush to a tidyer point. It gives me much more control

As always C&C welcome.

I think a red rim for the shoulder pad could look good. And if it ends up looking bad, you xan easily paint it black again..

Champion looks nice! I especially like the shield.

Well i glued my Company Champion and Jump Chaplin together last night, and took some photos this morning. I am very pleased with how they came out. In regards to the shoudlers on the chaplin, i wussed out and decided against painting the rims red. I like how he looks, and i don't want to spoil it

I also took a couple of photos of the Captin in my Display cabinet when i got the cabel over the weekend, but forgot i had taken them so took them off the camera this morning.

I started on my apothacary last night, as i had so much fun soing the bone colour on the shield of the champion. I had previously decided to go for Bleached bone rather than skull white as the main colour on my apothacary. First a coat of Bubonic brown (i think lol) and then a coat of bleached bone. I'll post some WIP shots tomorrow hopefully.

Post by: M0rdain

I decided to start on my Apothacary next, as i really enjoyed doing the shield on my Champion. I decided that he would be more of a bone colour rather than a white colour to fit in better with the scheme. So he started off with a base spray of chaos black the same as all of my models. He then got a coat of Bubonic Brown and then a thin coat of bleached bone.

He then got another couple of think coats of bleached bone, before i gave him wash of Gryphon Sepia. I then painted over in bleaced bone avoiding the recesses, then highlighted with 1:1 Bleached bone:Skull White, i then mised in some more Skull white for the top highlights.

Looking at the close up photos, i have noticed a coupe of bits that need a bit more attention, but this is my first attempt at painting in this way rather than just doing an edge highlight after the wash. But for table top i am very pleased.

And a random shot of my Lascannon objective, i still need to add a bit more detail, and static grass.

As always C&C welcome.

Well i got round to finishing my Apothacary off, i touched him up last night. I tried to do some blending on the shoulder pads, i am not sure how well this has come out ont the photos, i may have to take a picture froma higher angle.

Then this morning when i went to take a photo, i decided that i had time to stick him together, as all i had to do was finish off the base. So out came the super glue.

I am pleased with how he came out, i just have to decide who to paint next. I think it will be my standard bearer, where i will try some more blending. And if his armour ends up looking cleaner (because its because he spends more time waving the standard rather than getting into melee.

Well i spent my lunch looking for a template for a banner. I eventaully found one, and printed it off, I then drew on the design in pencil.

The plan is to photocopy it down to the right size, and then use some thicker card (or plasti card if i can find any). The guide sugests 'painting' the card in pva glue then sticking your design on to it, then giving it another coat of PVA before you paint it. So as not to have to worry about the card /paper getting FUBAR from washes etc. While scanning the picture i wondered how i was going to paint the thin frame around the main design. I am considering trying to use some Green stuff to Form a raised frame, ther efore making it easier for me to paint. I then thought that as i am doing this i may as well try and sculpt the skull part of the design as well. A bit more of a challenge but should make it fun.

Morning all. I took some more photos of my Apothacary, to try and better show the highlighting on his shoulders. What looked like a nice day outside, was obviously not as bright as the other day. So the photos have come out, but not quite as bright as the previous ones. I had better start work on my light box, i just need some lights and some tissue paper ... so .. so far i have a cardboard box

I gave the Standard Bearer a good wash of Babadab black, i may have been a bit over zealous lol, as he has come out a bit darker than usual. (i plan on going back over him in blood red any way, to define the shadows, before i start the highlighting process. But last night i realised i had missed a bit so had to touch him up. And as he was wet i could not do my intended next steps.

Which was actually a good thing as i was in two minds as to what to do last night and this decided it for me. I got to make my Banner My oriinal plan was to use green stuff to create the detail, but i decided that i was not good enough to get the shapes i wanted. but when i sat down at my desk i noticed an old blue folder after giving it a bit of a feel I decided that it would be good. So i started off cutting out my banner and drawing round it, i then cut out the basic shape and glued the paper image on top using a little bit of super glue. This stuck a little faster than i expected so it was not quite in line, so a little trimming was needed.

This is where i sshoul dprobably go back a bit and stop myself running ahead in excitement. Yesterday i used the photo copyier after i had drawn out my design, to shrink down the image. i shrunk it to 80%, 75% and 70% as i was not sure which one would fit. After holding them up to the model i decided 70% was best.

OK and back to the glueing. i then realised that i did not have a second copy of the banner at 70%. i looked at the images and decided that the design on the 75% would still fit nicely into the main banner at 70%. so i preceeded to cut out each item and stick them down to more card then cut them out with scisors and a craft knife. (this took the majority of the time.) Learning from my mistake, this time i used some pva glue to stick the items down so that i could reposition them on the banner. Once happy I gave it all a coat of PVA glue, using my finger as sugested int he guide i read yesterday so to not leave brushmarks.

This mornign it looked great, so i turned it over and gave the back a nice coat of PVA as well. I am very pleased so far. The only thing i for see is that the tabs may be a little stiff to bend round the Banner pole cross peice, so i may have to score them, but we will cross that bridge when i get to it.

I was going over myproposed army list, and working out what else i need to obtain via swap or ebay, when i realised that the load out of my command squad was going to be too expensive. My Standard bearer already had a power fist that i could not ammened, and i was planing on giving him a plasma pistol. I decided, to change this to a storm bolter. But as i did not have one i asked on Dakka for advice on how to model one

I decided to go with cutting off the grip on 2 pistols and filing down the opsoing sides and then glueing them together. I then reatached the pistol grip and pinned it onto a spare arm. Sadly i only had my mobile to take photos on this morning, as my wife had hidden the camera lol. So the phots are not the best. But you get the idea. I think i am going to ahve to clean it up a bit, and maybe use a little green stuff to fill in the gaps.

As always C&C welcome

Yep, I've seen that method done several times. It will look good.
My suggestion is clean up the mold lines, and don't add too much GS, just a bit across the top like so:

Well last night i cleaned up the storm bolter a little more, but i did not add any green stuff as i only saw the post this morning. I may add some tongiht. But here are some photos with the arm held on with blue tack

I have arranged a game with a friend of mine, we have set the date a few weeks away to give us time to get our models painted. But i realised that i do not have enough models yet to field 1500 army. (this friend is doing me a swap for my AOBR orks for some Marines) And i realised that looking at my main list (Planned army) that i need a Termie with a heavy flamer, and the ones from AOBR dont have a flamer. Luckily i had a Termie from the metal models i stripped from another firend, that i had planned to have deul wielding flightning claws. But i realised that i dont ahve an assult termie squad so he would be better being my Heavy Flamer. So rooting through my bits box i found a flamer for a dreadnought, and a termie arm meant for a shield. I pinned these together and added some rudementory green stuff. I also found a canister whihc i think was from the IG, but it looks cool.

But i needed a power fist for his other hand, and i did not have one, so i had to *gulp* butcher a lighting claw. The knuckles need a bit of a clean up, but i like its look.

The reason he is on a small and large base is that he was already glued onto a small base, so i thought i would glue that onto a larger base, and then green stuff in a bit of a slope, and hopefully find some other stuff to add to the base.

I am going to have to proxy in some Necrons in this game anyway, so when i decided to use a thunder fire cannon to make use of what was an objective marker.

I decided this guy can be the Techmarine Gunner

Well i have had a busy weekend IRL so not had a chance to do much painting. Although i have finised off modeling the last few models i need / have for my up coming game. Sadly i forgot to take a photo before priming, but one of my veterans had a power fist and i needed him to have a chainsword. I decided against cutting off his arm and replacing, and instead decided to have his power fist holding a chain sword. i only have to cut off the thumb and remodel in GS, and pin in a chain sword. I am pleased how it went. But you will have to wait for painted pictures. As i took some once primed and there was not enough definition.

BUT i have got some photos of my standard bearer as i finally got round to giving him his red and purple highlights I have tried somethign a bit different. Normally i just add blazing orange edge highlights after the babadab black wash. But i added a few more layers of transition this time. Similar to what i did for my Apothacary. I am not sure if i will do this for my rank and file, but i think its work it for the command squad. (pity i did not think of this before my champion)

I have since put a wash over the bone areas, and will hoepfully be highlighting them tonight, i need to start afresh on his arm, as its a new one with a storm bolter. I also gave the banner its first coat ofbleached bone (after having primed it.

But the other day i put a base coat of red gore on my Termies, and Chapter Master. (not sure if her will stay as my chapter master, but that is what he will be for my upcoming game.

As always C&C welcome

I love painting power fists I may try and work some fluff out (at some point) that gives a reason why they prefer them. Its just a pity they are so expensive to field :(

While in an incredibally interesting and important meeting *cough* i made good use of my time and sketched out an idea for some free hand for the top of my Command Squads Rhino. I still need to get the rhino, lol. But this was just somethign to ocupy my time

It obviously needs tidying up, its just a general idea. What do you think?

It's a good sketch! Are hands meant to be from the "owner" of the skull? If so, the thumbs should be on the top, but if they are supposed to be from "someone else", they are fine.

M0rdains Marines - Back from the dead, Scratch built thunderfire cannon @ 2011/09/30 15:54:21

They are meant to be striking the skull (not the owners I need to re do it and practice drawing the gauntlets a bit more, to make sure they are even.

Post by: RSJake

I see. I would suggest just showing the side of the fists, it would get the point across better, but you wouldn't see the detail on the back of the gauntlets. Maybe just show a bit less of the fingers and thumbs, it would look more like a closed fist.

Ok Sorry for the delay in updating my Blog. I have a deadline to paint up my remaining marines before a battle with my friend on the weekend of the 22/10. So i decided to set up an asembly line with the last 9 models. Well It did not go quite as well as planned. Yes i got the paint on them and added extra colours but sadly my motivation wained as it took longer to get them looking good. That and my main painting time of friday and saturday nights has been eaten into due to working a 2nd Job on those evenings. and getting in at 1am i am rather tired and just zonk out with a cider and dont get much painting done. So i split the remaining models down and did more work on 4 of them. So they have progressed a little faster.

I have a new mobile so and it has a flash!! which means hopefully these photos will be a bit better. (My wife had hidden the real camera) And it does not help that the mornings are getting darker, so my prime photo taking time is getting shorter. I need to get my light box set up. I have one light and a box, but no tissue paper or a second light yet lol. I may rig it up and see how it goes with 1 light

All photos are PIP C&C welcome

So here we have my Stand in for chapter master for the up coming game, not sure what he will be after, he may even stay as that lol.

1st Veteran for the command squad.

2nd veteran for the command squad. I decided to give him the chainsword in his power fist. I think it looks cool, that way i can give him either weapons in a game (but will probably stay with chainsword, i just did not have the heart to cut off the arm of the metal mini)

And while i was in a tired mood, and did not feel like painting :( i made an objective for the up coming battle. Its not even base coated yet, but i dont want to detract from my new found enthusasm for finishing my marines.

I have definatly decided that i prefer painting 1 mini at a time rather than loads at once, i loose my motication too quickly.

Anyway C&C welcome

The deadline for my battle is drawing closer, this Saturday!! So I need to finish up my last few Marines, they have received their last highlights, I just need to do the details. Oo yeah and all their arms and back packs that are not attached lol. Here are a couple of photos from last night; I took them on my phone as more of an experiment to see how they came out. The one with the flash really distorts the colours, but the one with out the flash is a much better representation of the colours (and is a better painted model as I painted him individually rather than in a production line)

Looking at this picture with out the flash i am really pleased with how he came out. I hope that my so so banner does not detract from him :s

C&C welcome

LOL, he was meant to be my first converted necron, and he was on my desk all primed, and when i worked out the list for my battle next weekend irealised i would need something to proxy a tech marine, and decided that my top hatted necron would be a cool stand in. So painted him up in the chapter colours haha. I may keep him as a tech marine, as he makes me smile

Some more progress has been made with the painting ready for the battle, i thought i had finished off 3 of my Terminators (bar finishing the basing) But looking at the below shot of my Terminator Sargent i have decided that his Storm Bolter needs a bit something more. They are not GD standard (And i never thought they would be) But i am pleased with how they look from 12 inches. So Good Table top by my standard

Well i managed to get them all painted and the limbs painted, and i even glued them in place. The bases have all ahd a base of colour but nothign more than that yet, i did nto want to rush it. I was more interested in getting the arms in place. (The eagle eyed of you will notice that one of them is missing a backpack, i mis counted when preppin, so he has not got one yet. That is something for my To do list.

I took the advice from Rawson and amended the positioning of my HF Terminator, although i raised his PF rather than lowering it, he is cheering as the Xenos Burn . He does look better now.

I took this photo last night, so it was under artificial light. Hopefully ill be able to get some proper photos taken tomorrow (in daylight, as my light box has not been built yet ) before the battle and i will upload them in due course.

Well i am finally getting round to uploading some photos from the Battle Last weekend. It ended in a Draw, as we had to clear the table for dinner before i went out to work that evening. We decided that the next battle will start earlyer in the day

Its not going to be much of a report, but i will try to give brief descriptions of the photos.

I had to make up an army list based on what i had, pre trade (Which was another reason for the battle) with a few proxys.

my Army consisted of.

Chapter Master plasma pistol, melta bombs, power sword
Honour Guard x4

Captin Power Sword & Bolter, melta bombs (odd confireration from AoBR)
Command Squad
Apothacary
Standard Bearer Standard, power fist, storm bolter
Champion
Veteran
Veteran

Tactical Squad x 10 rocket launcher and flamer

Tactical Squad x 10 rocket launcher and flamer

Dreadnought Extra Armour Multi Melta / Close combat weapon with storm bolter (Standard from AoBR)

Terminator Squad x 6 Heavy Flamer

Thunder Fire Cannon
Techmarine Gunner

Whirlwind Storm Bolter

Total 1498

The second tactical squad was proxyed with some of my Necron warriors, and the Honour Guard was Proxyed with Flayed ones (The Chapter Champion was my Necron Lord), oh and my awesome Pimped Necron Tech Marine with his "Thunderfire Cannon".
Now that the Trade has taken place i have an aditional 10 tactical Marines, 10 new assult Marines and 3 Rhinos. I plan on upgrading one of the rhinos to a RB for my command squad. but i will scratch build all the differnt turrent weapons and magnatize them.

Its been atleast 1 1/2 - 2 years since i ahve played a game, infact i think it was not long after 5th eddition came out that we palyed an apocolypse game. So i am not the most skilled player, and the majority of my hobby is the colecting and modeling/painting. But it was great to see my Marines on the table, and good fun to have a game. We plan on a rematch in the new year

Here Is a ranged shot of both armys Deployed before the first turn.

Here we have a closer shot of My army, Top to bottom we have.
Chapter master with honour Guard, Backed up By Tactical Squad Beta.
Then you have the Tunderfire Cannon with Techmarine on top of the Building
Whirlwind
Captain and Command Squad
Tactical Squad Alpha
Terminator Squad
And finally the Dreadnought.

Close up of my new Terminator with his Heavy Flamer (Still needs the Base finishing off)

Erk from this angle i can see a gap in his shoulder :(

Front view of the command squad.

Very simmilar shots of the Tactical Squad but with different focusing.

My Dreadnought prooves his worth and pops a can

My Chapter Master and Honour guard, take a couple of casualties, but then desimate and route a unit of Boyz, followed by moving in to take out the Truck they came in on.

Not paying attention and letting this looted wagon full of nobs get so close was bad news for my Whirlwind. It was complete destroyed and left a nice big crater in the ground.

The comand squad prepares for battle. (this counts as a chainsword as i did nto want to cut off the metal power fist )

And the battle in full swing.

So it was good fun.

Next posts will be me building up my new units, i will save painting them untill i get my can of red Army painter spray paint, that i will hopefully get for Christmas.

Ok Since the battle i have started on building up my lovely new Marines Thank you Monty.

I started off with Sergeant from the Tactical Squad Beta, he was going to be modeled after my Friend Monty who the previous battle was against, and who the trade took place with. Monty has a Great Beard and huge long Dreads, so it was easy enough to style this on the model.

I started off with the beard i had a basic triangular shape flattened out of green suff, i then cut a small wedge out of one side to leave space for the mouth, i then pressed it onto the model and scultped the dead with my main tool, then did finer detail with my scapel blade. I tride to push the beard up the side of the face, but i decided to not give him a mustache as i did not want to obscure the mouth. (i have since thought that i may now add on a mustache as the rest is cured it may be easyer. I then rolled out lots of thin sasauges for the dreads and placed them on individually, so that i could choose where they went ont he model, i made sure to keep clear of most of the back so that the back pack would still fit on normally. i then used the scaple blade to add some texture to the dreads.

Here be Montymus the Mighty and Feared Sergeant of the Striking Skulls Tacktical Squad Beta

With Montymus basically built i decided to turn my attention to the Assult Squad, i have been wanting for ages to do an assult squad so i had a couple of ideas. A while back i bought some scenery that was bricks of dental plaster, and i had a load of them left over. I decided to rough them up a bit, and have all the assult squad mounted on one. To show them leaping over rouble to get to the enemy. I had decided in my head that i would like Power fists to be a theme in the army, so when i can i will have them used. (if i can afford it lol) So the Sergeant has a power fist and bolt pistol.

I then made a Marine with a plasma pistol, but the photo has not come through to my PC from my phone yet, so he will come later. So next is Knifeblock, named because ther eis a knife in the block he is leaping over lol. His pose is quite leaning forward, but with the head looking up i think it looks likehe is leaping forward rather than falling over. I have tried to align the heads better on these models, having them looking along the guns. I was not so strict with this on my Tactical Squad Aplha, that and they were AOBR marines so there was not so much variety.

C&C welcome, i will continue to build them all as i am loveing it. So far it tends to be one a night (i get a couple of hours each evening once my wife and son have gone to bed, so i stick something on my PC to watch and slip on my headphones and scrape away mold lines

Automatically Appended Next Post:
All the models so far only have the legs and body glued together (and to pinned to the base) the arms and head and back back are seperate for painting, they were just bluetacked for the pictures. Apart from Montymus whos head is attached because i greenstuffed him.

the planned colour scheme for the Assult squad will be as below, the arm holding the close combat weapon will be Purple, rather than it being the right only.

I meant to have my veterans in the comand squad have a bone coloured helmet, but i ended up glueing them in place before painting, and i was not happy enough in my skill to paint them while glued. I will ahve to rethink my "veteran" scheme.

Bah the web page failed after i wrote the last post, i just hate that. I think it went somethign like this.

I finnaly worked out why the photos were not coming through to my work PC from my mobile, they had double extentions, or as my phone calls it a full stop in the date. So i renamed the file and it came through fine.

I have enjoyed using the blocks on the base, i ahve a varity to use, even though so far i have only used 2 diferent types, i have a few models left yet to play around with.
The photos are mainly for me to have a reference for rebuilding the models once they are all painted up as the arms and heads will all be seperate. ... take 2 (i think i will copy all the text first)

Well i had a busy weekend what with working Friday and Saturday nights on the Pub Door, so i only managed to get one model made over those 2 nights, and one more on Sunday night.

I decided to use a beaky helmet for the first one, he will be the first in my army The second was my second plasma pistol wielder. I then made up the 5 more bases for the rest of the Assult squad, as i could do this easily while watching QI XL on the Iplayer on my PC Ill get a photo of them tonight, i had got into bed before i realised i had not photographed them.

Mmm i think that actually in the artifuical light, they look better without the white background. What do you think?

Well i remembered to take a photo of the bases

Unfortunatly my son was not well over the weekend, on Sunday and Monday night, so i had to be quiter than normal in the spare room. So no clipping of sprues or shaving of dental plaster bricks. So i decided i could do some nice quite glueing of sand So all 11 bases now have sand glued on them and have dried nicely. I have not taken a new photo as ther eis not that much difference to make it worth it. I managed to get part way though making the next Assult marine, but got tired so he is part finished on my desk. Once done i will upload a further photo.

I am also thinking about going back to Montymus and possibly adding some more to him, maybe some grenades or packs. Just to make him more special. Also i need to decided how to cope with the grave stone for the base. I think it would be best to paint it seperatly and then glue it on at the end.

The bricks are left overs from some scenery, its in the background of this photo of one of my necrons. Ignore the naff paint job on the model.

Untill next time.

Introducing Flammer Joe

I decided i wanted a Multi melta as my second, not worked out this guys name yet. I bashed together a Multi melta, but sticking 2 meltas side by side and adding some cableing out of the back. A bit of GS on the top to blend them together an a dagger at the front under the barels as a bayonet. and a good old Purity seal

Since taking the photo i realised i had not drilled out the barrel in the pistol , so that has been recitifed.

I had previosuly printed out some Blank templates of a Marine, so they just went wild Ill use the Objective markers as an excuse to paint differnet colours and to try out a little more adventorous modeling (that is once i find a couple of pairs of legs as when i checked through my bits i i ahve no spare legs :( I have enough to finish my Tactical squad but then i am out. :s mm i will have to think about this ...

Hopefully Just need to find him some legs first. As i am getting some red army painter spray for christmas, my main army will get a coat of this rather than chaos black, especially my rhinos and RB. But the two objective markers i can do in the black so i will be able to paint them pre christmas

I tried out a bit of GS ing to make some flexible armour joints at the shoulder, so that i could reposition the arms. They flex came out ok, (right better than left) not sure if i will redo the left or not, i am in two minds. The arm looks odd at some angles, but i know i am not perfect so i am sure he will look cool in the long run, especially at table top distance

Well so far i have manged to coble together 2 more Tactical Marines, i am trying to do a little bit of conversion on each one, nothing major yet as i am not that confident in my surgical skills lol.

So untill i can think of better names, (or they have prooved them selves in battle and earned a name ...

May i present Side feed,

& Darth

Darths head is not glued in place so that i will be able to paint it seperatly. This is a new thing for me as so far i have only painted marines with heads attached. But i think due to the betal and flesh i would be better do ing it seperatly. I have a nice block of foam to hand and have drilled a hole in the bottom to faciliate this The plan is similar for my Assult marines as well, as i plan on Painting thier heads Purple.

Well it was time to build my last tacitical marine for the Beta Squad. I decided that i would puch myself a bit more and try some major surgery that i had not tried before, and being inspired by Gitsplitta i made him a beaky

I wanted a marine wielding two pistols with arms out stretched, but i could only find one arm outstretched. I managed to find the other arm but it was bent, so i cut my first marine arm in half and stratend it out and pinned it in place. I then cut both hands off at the wrist and roatated the guns horizontally so they were being held Gangsta style. The Helmet did not want to fit into the torso due to the colar at the front so iput a small ring of plastic in the torso to bost up the level of the head. This also had the side effect of making him look more upright. When driling out the pistols, i went wonkey on the second one and it did not look right :( so i decided to trim it off and add my own barel. Its wider than normal, but i like the effect, it makes it look like a beefier pistol.

He still needs a little bit of GS to fill the odd gap, and i am considering gluing a bolter to him somewhere and creating a GS strap but i am not sure if that would crowd him to much, s there is already multiple purity seals and blades on him. So far verypleased with my surgery no major complications.

Thanks for the comments on my Neo Gangsta, i do think he looks cool Im glad you like him too.

I have been thinking about this next bit for ages, but i wanted to finish building my Marines first. A while back when i added a new hose to my shower it came with a braket to attatch to the wall. I looked at it and was inspired to use it as the bas of some form of Artillery style cannon. I decided i would create myself an interesting objective (especially after reading more of Gitsplitta's stuff. So my gangsta marine will ahve to wait for his bit of GS (i am sure i will use some on this objective so he will get it done then)

I searched about for somethign to use as a barrel, but had not found anything of the right size. Then while out for a walk with the family and friends, i came across some discarded canisters from an air pistol, and of course my first thought was how can i use this in 40k I decided they would make great fuel tanks, and decided to turn my cannon into some sort of Greater Flame Storm Cannon

So last night i boxed off part of the bracket, and glued in an old Highlighter pen. I then glued on the canisters, and fiddeled around a bit. It still needs some more work i need to think about details. I am thinking the bracket will needs some rivets. so i will have to read up on the best way to do that. i know that rsjake has been rivieting recently so i may poke him for advice. Apart form that i will have a dig through my box, and find some more interesting bits to stick to it Oh yes, and i need to find some form of cable or tubing to connect the canisters with, i am thinking i ahve some old wire somewhere or i may employ a bendy drinking straw

As always C&C welcome

Ah yes...that will do nicely! Burn baby, Burn!

I would put several small wires together to make it look very beefy. Bendy straws to me just never look right...they always look like bendy straws. But maybe that's just me.

I like very much where this is going, and look forward to seeing it progress!

As for rivets, On this scale I would use a hole punch on a sheet of styrene, or cut styrene rod in very small lengths. I think that would look best. but for real inspiration for rivets on this scale, I would ask Viktor von Domm, or Dseingass. They really know thier stuff!

I had an epifany at work, to chop up treasury tags, to create rivits. So tonight i started to glue on some rivits. More to come tomorrow night. (thats if i can be bothered once i get in from work at 1am )

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I found the best way to put them on was using a tooth pick i had cut the point off, with a very small amount of bluetack on, this way it would pick up the rivits but not be too sticky that i could not pull it away before the super glue had fully cured. It still failed from time to time and i ended up with rivits stuck to my finger tips that i had to pry off quickly lol. But haveing super glue constantly on your fingers is part of the hobby, right?

When seeing the above uploaded photo i realised that i had not taken a photo of the tubing i had added, i took your advice rsjake and did not use a bendy straw i did find an old power cable that i butchered. I had to pin it into the canisters as i could not drill into them, and as i did not have a large enough drill bit to hand, i pined the other in into the body of the flamer as well. Both ends will be receiving some GS work, once i have done the rivits. The Gansta marine will get his joints filled in at that point as well.

I know i am in the middle of doing my lovely Flamer, but i got the bug to put together the marines for the paint scheme my neices designed. The first will be a Plasma Marine, i know its been done before but i think its funny

First inprogress shot.

Then with the gun attached and the back pack buletacked on.

I have done some GS work on the arm, but that is curing atm.

It will beusing this colour scheme

I have not decided on how i will position the 2nd of my Neices marines yet i will have to think about it. I have also decided to do a third marine and make it a Manits Warrior after reading Gitsplitta's awesome epic blog. I just hope i have enough chain swords lol.

mucked around at lunch on the B&C SM for my neices Marines.

Came up with

Surprisingly, i thought the Older ones image would be better, but actually the younger ones looks better as a space marine lol. Either way they will be fun to apint, as they are not all red I will ahve to get them to come up with chapternames so i can design a symbol for the Pad.

Oh and Optimus Prime has had some work done on him as well, i have repositioned a leg to have one side kneeling, and adapted a ML to look like a LC. Now that the gs would of cured over night ill try to mock up what he will look like tonight and take some photos.

Well lets try writing this again, as my PC decided to have a Border Management error Blergh.

So here is the next marine for my objective, colour scheme designed by my Neice. I repositioned his leg to have him kneeling on some stone. This was the most major surgery i have done to a leg, but i am glad i bit the bolter shell, as i am glad how it came out. And i customised a ML to be a LC, using a straw from a kids drink carton . I found out after the fact, that super glue melts the foam that i use :( i will ahve to experiment and find a better glue for when using the foam.

So here is Optimus Prime

The flat off hand that normally holds up the ML was used in my other Objective Marine so this one is pointing instead.

Well Christmas is over and we are in the new year. I received my Can of Army painter Red Foundation Primer so all is good. It then came to my attention that i had not glued on the sand and stones on to the bases of my Tactical Squad Beta. So got on with that, as well as basing up a diorama / display stand / Objective base for my 3 latest Marines. (Ellie, Optimus Prime and Mantis Warrior (Yet to be names)) I also then realsied, due to my excitement of startign the Giant Flame Storm Cannon Objective and the 3 Marines, i had not put together my 2 rhinos and razor back. I had originally consindered painting the inside. But i decided not to, and to build them all. For the razor back i need to scratch build the weapon combinations, and magnitise them. So i need to decide if i will make each option with its own weapon housing or make a standard housing that any combination can be magnatised onto. I am heading towards the single standard housing with the weapons being swapable. I just hope i can get them to look and fit good/well in a standard housing. I have a collection of pens and bits that i will use for the diffent barrels as i dont ahve any spare actual weapons ... mm actaully i may have a lazcannon from some IG bits, so i will see how that looks. If its a singluar one i will use it for the lazplaz.

Painting wise i would like to do some free hand on them all, i have sketched out ideas at work during meetings. I just hope i can transpose them into paint.

I'll get some pictures up once there is somethign to show for my efforts

Well the first Rhino is finished and ready for its coat of primer. But it is down the end of the line for painting so in no rush yet. The Tactical Squad Beta had its First spray of my new red primer yesterday. I wanted to give them a second coat and turn over the smaller parts that were lying down (back packs arms etc) but I got caught up in real life. So hopefully I will manage to do that this evening before it gets too dark (or get up early tomorrow morning, but then it could be dark then … Dam you winter)

I still need to prep all the heads for the assault squad and tack them onto some paper clips and stick them into something (not sure what yet) for priming and then painting. I have a large block of foam which I may cut a chunk off and use that, but I am unsure how it will react to the paint. (don’t want it melting, but I’m guessing it should be ok) If not ill jut pin them onto a strip of MDF.

So here she is.

I am having a bit of lighting issue for undercoating my models, its to dark before work and too dark after work :( So i can only do it at the weekend. And i only had time for one pass last weekend, over my tactical squad. But i did get an afternoon off this week so i was able to give them another blast, so they are in the death cupboard drying. So hopefully i can get some more done this weekend Hopefully the Rhinos.

Speaking of vehicles, i am in the midst of building the RB for my command squad, and i ahve been thinking about all the lovly goodness i can adorn it with as well as trying some free hand painting. While reading rsjakes blogs again, i was inspired to consider some sculping. Nothing major as my GS skill leaves a lot to be desired lol. So i thought i would have a practice with some blue tack at work and a random wooden paddle/skewer i have in my draw from some olives.

This is what appeared. i was actually quite surprised that it was not hideous lol, so i will have to give it a go.

That's with blue tac? That looks great! When you have a go with GS, I have two recomendations.

1. Push down very lightly right above the eyes, this will give a cranial ridge sort of look and it will squish the eyes a bit for more of an angry look. It's not neccesary, but it looks good.

2. With a needle or something VERY thin, draw a line across the top of the teeth very lightly. This just makes the teeth look a bit more realistic.

But as I am sure this is very tiny, it's a very good job! Can't wait to see what you end up with!

P.S. Thanks for the mention!

Still, with blue tac, it's really good! I can barely get that stuff where I want it just to hold an arm on!

I get nervous every time I sit down to sculpt anything! But I like that feeling. I guess it's similar, but on a smaller scale to those people who like to jump out of perfectly fine airplanes. Crazy!

I've come to visit your blog! so far so good, I’m likening the varied guys man they look really cool but what are they are? Is it a death watch team? Or a kill team? ect. You have also 'opened my mind' with the scratch built HW I may consider making some for my tac-squad guys too (Even though they are mostly painted)!. That lascannon is suburb so is the multi-meta! I love the varied weapons on them! The dual-bolt pistols which is basically a storm bolter is great. I really like the tac-squad guy with dual bolt pistols too. Looking forward to that one being painted. Hey how about you check out my blog to? (Link is in signature). Looking forward to updates;

I really need to buy some more Super glue, its put me at a bit of a stand still on continuing with the build of my RB. So i sat at my desk watching CSi trying to work out what i could do. So i trimed up a few bits i could use for adornment. But while searching through my drawer as i had a feelin gthere was actually an old tube of super glue in there. I came accross this.

One of my old Plastic shot glasses, I decided that i could cut it in half vertically and then turn it on its side and use it as the turret housing. I plan on magnatising the different weapon load outs so this would work as well.

I had better dig out my hacksaw and go shopping for super glue at lunch

Yey i nipped into Tesco on the way home to grab a loaf of bread and some Super Glue, they only had the Gel but i am not complaining at £1 a tube. I also popped a new blade into my hack saw.

I had tried to cut through the shot glass the other night but it was so noisy i did not want to wake my son and wife so i put it off until the next evening when i could do it when they were awake.

So to begin with i trimmed up 3 pieces of sprue and lined them up and turned one of them upside down so they tessellated better. Then glued then onto the under side of the RB hatch.

This is to attach my magnet on to, so that the turret can rotate.

So the next evening came and i cut the shot glass in half, it was easier than i thought, BUT i had not cut it straight *urgh*

So i decided to add some sprue frame work around it to cover up the shoddy saw work (no i understand the reason for a jewellers saw) and also as a nice place to put some Rivets mmm Rivets *gurgle*. It seems like i have read too many blogs with rivets in that the bug is beginning to catch lol.

I also glued on a base. I would say plastic card, but its not. Its part of the insert from the box my mobile phone came in lol. That’s why there is a hole in the bottom of it. I don’t see this as a problem as i will attach something onto this which will then magnetise on to the hatch. I am considering using a normal base, as its just about the right size.

Now i just need to think about the weapons now. My plan for is to use the sticks off some of my sons lollys as they are tubes and would make a nice assault cannon. Now i just need to ask the nice lady at the chip shop for some more lollys next time i take my son with me to get chips lol.

A little bit more happened last night, i filled in the gaps of the frame around the Skull turret with GS, and I then used the excess that I had prepared to create a purity seal and a scroll, to use some where on the RB. I also added a few GW bits around the RB. Purity seal dangly rod things, a skull. But nothing worth taking a photo of yet.

All nicely smeared in Vaseline so it does not stick to the tin while curing. I then realised that it was actually upside down so I had to flip it over which meant the front is all shiny as well. Will have to give it a good clean before gluing it on. There is actually a slight impression of a skull on the wax seal part of the purity seal, I will have to paint it to emphasise it more.

For the scroll I rolled a blob of GS into a sausage and then used the handle of my scalpel to roll it out flat, I then cut out some nicks, and a triangle out of each end to give it the correct shape. I then left it for a little while to start to cure, then using the flat of my blade I eased it off my work surface (which I had spread some Vaseline over to begin with) I then folded each end over and then folded it again back on its self. I left it for a while longer, and then as stated above I flipped it over. And left it on the top of the Vaseline tub to cure over night.

I also filed the bump off the bottom of a standard non slotted base and super glued the other magnet onto the base (making sure it was the correct way up before hand. this will then be glued onto the bottom of the Skull turret once the GS has cured and I can handle it with more ease.

I actually managed to take some photos in the Daylight!! So here is the current WIP of my Command RB. The side doors are just blue tacked in for the photos, as I wanted them separate to work on them.

Some more work was done last night. I printed out an image of an iron halo and cut it out then glued it onto some plastic (that came in the collar or my new work shirt) after letting it dry, I then cur around the printed image. This was then glued down above the sculpted skull on the side door. I then cut some small rivets off an Arial on the top of one of the RB‘s hatches, these rivets were then glued onto the Iron Halo. I then used some GS to fill in where I had cut off the Arial.

I then riveted around the edge of the skull turret. The rivets were made in the same way as I made the ones for my Greater Flamestorm Cannon. By slicing up the plastic ends of treasury tags. And then super gluing them on individually, using gel super glue and a pair of tweezers. I also decided to put some more rivets on the front edge of the RB, as you can never have enough rivets, and it tied it in nicely with the turret.

I’ll get some photos of it tonight, and any more work that I have done

So here is the side door for the RB with the skull and iron halo as the command squad logo. Including little rivets

The Skull Turret with added rivets, I have also started working on the internals of this for who the weapons will be attached and changed. But I think I have run out of Super glue again … already :’(

Here we have the front view with added awesome that is Rivets with the GS scroll, it is a little wonky but I don’t want to prise it off as I am worried it would tear. Its not too wonky that I would tear it off and start again though

I have glued some sprue on the inside of the skull turret that I will then glue a “plate” for lack of a better word, that I will attach a magnet to (or I may glue some metal to it if I think that having 2 magnets here will mean it sticks out too far) That the interchangeable weapons will glue on to. And that’s another big project I need to scratch build the weapons .. mmm .. well I may have a random lascannon (it may be IG though) as I think I have on plasma gun. I will have to have a look through my bits box. I think I will just make the twin linked assault cannons and the lasplas. Not sure if I will make the twin linked heavy bolters though.

Glad to see your making progress with it all. Those Space Marines had been sat around in my wardrobe since Apocalypse came out and they released the Battle Company boxset! I had such plans for my marines, but now I don't even seem to find time for my Orks, let alone my Rogue Trader Guard army!

Guess I'm going to have a much more formidable force to face next time we do battle. I shall have to get building and painting, not that I really have seem to time for much of that at the moment. :-\

Well when I continued with the skull turret last night I realised that the internal bracing was slightly wonky so I had to start again. But I got very little done last night, as my son was restless and I had to keep settling him. Therefore no real update today. But here is a photo of the built marines. The tactical have had their foundation spray and the assault squad is still awaiting it (hopefully this weekend)

Did not make much more progress last night. Still working on the internals of the turret. I got a bit caught up in the episode of CSI I was watching lol. That and I had to drill a hole for my magnet with a 1 mil drill bit for a 6mm (ish) magnet. It involved a lot of filing and scalpeling (if that’s even a word). I do have a Dremel tool, but as the house is asleep its not a viable option so it had to be done by hand. I had a 2mm drill bit that I was able to use to widen the hole (and other holes), but it does not fit in my pin vice so I had to use it within my finger tips.

So I decided to write a bit of fluff this morning. It’s not really my thing, and I don’t really know that much about the fluff in general of 40k, so I have tried to read up a bit more about. I have played all the DOW games, hence why these are Blood Raven Successors, that and the paint restrictions I had at the time of painting my first model lol.

-----------------------------------------------
The Striking Skulls, are a relatively new chapter. They were formed after Chapter Master Azariah Kyras was tainted by the powers of chaos, and defected to the Black Legion.

A large portion of the Blood Ravens decided to split off and Form the Striking Skulls. They believe that having a Librarian a position of power, such as a chapter master is just tempting Chaos. there is no hate harboured towards their parent chapter, but this successor chapter believes that they will be of greater use to the Emperor if they do not leave them selves open to such temptation and tragedy. The Striking Skulls much like the Blood Ravens have no knowledge of their primogenitor legion or primarch. This absence of information about a primarch has results similarly in the Striking Skulls focussing their spiritual reverence on the Emperor.

Due to their fear of Librarians being tainted by the warp, the librarians of the Striking Skulls are monitored even more heavily than they were in the Blood Ravens. As a counter effect of this lessening of Librarians and the slight distrust of them, Chaplin’s have found a greater standing within the chapter. To this extent, the Striking skulls do not rely on the great libraries of knowledge to strategise before battle. But instead throw themselves into battle with more of a religious fervour.

Sounds fine M0rdian. A little fluff never hurt anyone. I've been know to dabble a bit myself. I've found it very useful to keep the stories short (2-3 paragraphs) and very focused. Even non-authors like me can usually pull it together for that long.

Thanks Gitsplitta i have read your fluff before and its very good. It’s part of why I felt I should at least get some background for my chapter. Considering you have such a rich tapestry to draw from for your pre and post crusade armies.

Well last night I started work on the actual assault cannon, I harvested some plastic tubing from my sons lollys.

(Bah the image has been redacted :()

I am not mean in not letting him have them lol, he is only 16 months to not good for him, but the nice lady at the chip shop keeps giving them to him, so I may have to go in for some chips over the weekend as I need the “stick” lol.

I used 2 of the tubes and cut 6 pieces of equal length, and the 3rd lolly had the paper stick , so this worked well for the central rod. I then stood this upright gently in blue tack. I then brushed the super glue down a section of its length, and stuck a portion of the rod on. Ti then repeated this until I have all 6 barrels attached then sanded it to flatten and even out. (I may need to file it one I am happy the glue is fully dry.

I may actually have to do some painting!! And put the modelling on hold until I get some more tube. So over the weekend there may be some progress with my tactical squad. I will have to amend my process slightly with the red undercoat, but this is a good thing I may be able to go straight to the babadab black wash. Is this advisable? Or should I do a coat of blood red first or maybe the red wash (cant remember its name off hand)

Loving the work on that assault cannon, once that is done I'm sure it'll look amazing. With regards to the paint, I think go with a coat of blood red before the wash and then maybe hit it with a black wash after and pick out the highlights again with blood red.

M0rdains Marines - Back from the dead, Scratch built thunderfire cannon @ 2012/01/27 14:51:21

Its probably best to go with the coat of blood red as you say, to tie the colour in to the rest of the army. Just in case the foundation red is off (which i think it is) I was just trying to save myself a step lol. I had better start attaching all those limbs to something then

So my plans for painting that night one I got home were scuppered. Then Saturday night it was the night of the Muppet, and I ended working late. So no painting or modeling was achieved this weekend :(

Hopefully now that my mind has stopped spinning, I can get some fresh water into my pots and start painting Montymus tonight. He is all ready blue tacked to the top of a paint pot. Lets hope the knock to my head has not impacted my painting skills. Lol.

I actually work at a Bowling Alley, so most of the time its fine and there are no problems, but there is always one that spoils the fun.

Anywho i got round to washing out my water pot and tidynigaway all the plastic dust and clippings on my desk and decided to break out my paints. I thought i would put down some blood red first over the red foundation. but on comparison to another model it has made no difference lol. So that will save me a lot of time I put some Liche Purple onto his hands and feet, and some bolt gun metal on to the ... metal bits Tomorrow i hope to lay down a babadab black wash. then i can start on my blending up to Blazing orange

I got bored of doing production line painting with my last tactical squad. so i am hoping to do one or 2 at a time to keep the spirit alive.

That and look for spots to Rivet

you have an intersting CV i am sure...^^

do you paint your minis like that all the time? and how do you bring the bitz together? i always painted my minis after glueing...with every miserable effect that creates... but i was always rather fearful to make the models glued together after the paintjob... access to all areas is sure a fine thing... but sometimes i am careless of glue splatter so i think i would ruin the mini and its paintjob...

spots to rivet? hehe...

All my Necrons were glued together fully before paining, and my First marines were also all glued together for painting. But i found especially with the tactical marines, i just had to poke at the chest eagles under the arms and guns, and could not do them justice.

So with my last batch that I modelled (that which started off this blog) my command squad I decided to paint the arms and back packs separately. It makes it a lot easier to paint them all as all the areas are much more accessible (especially under arms and the chests etc) I have not had a problem gluing the bits on so far, but the last batch were all pinned. I have found that using the gel super glue rather than its runnier counter part you have much better control of where the glue goes, and it will also bridge small gaps and imperfections where needed. Although I have run out of the gel at the moment, I will see how it goes with normal super glue. Luckily my latest batch is in a bottle with a brush so again I have much better control of where I want it to go.

The downside is that you don’t get to see how the model will look as you go along and you have to pose it before hand with small amount of blue tack. I then take a photo for reference purposes so that when he is painted I can glue him back together in the original way I intended. This is also the reason I am doing one model at a time, so that I don’t get any of the arms mixed up. (As the shoulder pads are all glued on once I have posed the arms and back pack with blue tack, so that I can have the pads in the best position for the arms and backpack.)

But there is then a great measure of satisfaction gluing it all together in the end. For instance, there was no way I could have painted my champion if I had not done it all separately.

Time for lunch now, some beans on toast. Then back to Dakka for the rest of my Lunch Break

Well I have not bought any models in 2 years, all the current ones I am building and painting are the result of a trade. (Traded away the orcs from my AOBR to Zablorg ) And this is why Montymus is styled the way he is, as a tribute to Zablorg.

I put a devlan mud wash over Montymus last night, then went back to the RB. I decided as I still need some more PC tubing (or a lolly stick as it is in this instance ) I thought I would look into the Lasplas. Looking through my Bits box I found an IG Lascannon which I could fiddle with but has the basic shape. But for the Plasma guns, I only had 1 spare in my SM bits yoghurt pot so I thought I would have a go a scratch building some. RSJake’s latest Steam Punk weapons are inspirational, so I thought I would try my hand and something. I found some sprue that was relatively without knobbles, and cleaned it up. (Note: I decided to change my blade on my hobby knife, and OMG I forgot how sharp they were when new, it was like a hot knife through butter it was beautiful) I then cut four pieces of equal length and glued them together in pairs. Having upturned one. ( in a sort of /\ \/ manner) I will then use this as the basic shape for the plasma guns. I should be able to score the coils into it. There was nothing worth taking photos of, so once there is more progress I will take a photo.

I have tomorrow off work as I have a retinal screening test where they will put drops in my eyes to dilate the pupils and take photos, but I cant drive after for 4 hours. So sadly won’t be able to drive to work *shucks* so hopefully I can get some fiddling done before hand, before I become light sensitive, and attacked by my son once he is back from nursery

So now that the sprue plasma block had dried i was able to attempt to bring forth my vision lol. Here is what i planned, based losely on the Normal Plasma gun.

I then used a hack saw to cut out the plasma coils, trying to keep them even lol. I edged the copils with a small rim. For the vents at the front, i scored them with the craft knife and then drilled in slighly with my pin vice. then using the point of my round file i rubbed them out to be a bit deeper. They are a bit ragged, but i cant think of a way to smooth them out.

Then this morning before my appointment, i took a rivit that had a hole and glued it onto the front for "barrel" effect. then using some GS i had previously rolled out into a thin sausage and left to cure, sliced off some tiny "rivets" although they are not technically rivits in this instance, although we could say they are and added them to the back. Now i just need to replicate this for the other side of the las plas

I will try to take some better pictures tonight.

It was an IG Lascannon, I cut off the cabling from the bottom (as it won’t fit in the turret, I may still model something different there). I then cut some plastic into an L shape to fit over the hollow that was on this side. I then glued that down. In the flip side I carved off the IG symbol and the small rivets that were on there. And before you yell heresy about removing rivets, all will become apparent. Because the plate I added did not have rivets I wanted the flip side to have matching rivets, to I sliced some off my GS sausage roll, and glued them onto both sides. I did not like the way the IG barrel looked so I wanted to alter it some how, so I trimmed off the bump (semi circle, or half a solid tube. Which ever is a better descriptor?) off either side. This now looked way to thin so I trimmed some cocktail stick to size and slued them into the gap on both sides. I am still considering adding some more rivets to the front of the barrel.

Lets hope that I am in the right frame of mind tonight to do something useful, be it painting or modelling.

And good news, i found another lolly stick that i can use to make the second assult cannon. So i just need to cut the flat plate to size for both guns. I am thinking of attaching some metal to the plates, rather than a second magnet. i have trimed up a bottle cap for one, into a small flat semit circle. No what did i do with that anvil, so i can faltten it out ... mm i ahve a feeling it was my dads rather than mine. .. pants..

But I was able to create the second assault cannon out of sweetie tube. But there is no picture of that as it’s the same as the last one

As requested here are some more photos of the lascannon. Sadly it was not until I got to work that I notice that they were a little blurry Grrr. But hopefully it will give you a better idea.

This one is where I trimmed off the existing rivets and the IG symbol.

Here you can see how thin the barrel was before I added the tooth picks.

seeing this now i am wondering how you can use the wood grain to your benefit...hmmm will your tank look weathered? i think this offers a good oprtunity for weathering...and scratches...

with your interest in riveting^^ you should try to get some very thin plasticcard/ styrene rods to cut the rivets in a massproduced looking way...tho there is nothing i am atm seeing that should make you feel unconfortable with your recent work!

just an idea for future works...

I am not sure about weathering ATM. I have no plans for specific weathering. But the washes I will use will have them looking far from pristine. I have got a whirlwind, but have not posted pictures in This blog, so may be I should drop them in.

I do not like the amount of brush strokes that can be seen, this is one of the reasons I now have a can of Army Painter red spray. Hopefully this will improve the look of my next vehicles. Also I will be using Devlan Mud rather than Babadab black as a wash, and I will try blended highlighting rather than the extreme edge highlighting.

At the time I did not have a Gryphon sepia or Devlan mud wash, so the bone colours need some work. It’s something I should probably go back and touch up.

Not sure if the wooden tubes of the LC will be metal or maybe light filled tubes (but that may look to plasma gunny. So we shall see.

At the time of buying it (or getting it as a Christmas gift) I was not sure about my army list, but I wanted a tank and I thought it looked cool. Also I remember facing one on a battle field and fearing it. Therefore I had to have one. It may also have something to do with pie plate / tank envy from playing my Necrons. (Where I either had none or 1 pie plate / tank if I ran my Monolith)

Sorry for the delay, The in laws have come to stay so I have had to tidy up my desk in the spare room :( so all my modelling bits are away for the week :( Also I have decided to spend a bit more time with my wife in the evenings as I have been neglecting her a bit recently. So my picture updates will be a little les soften. But that does mean I will have to be a bit more effective with the time I have in the spare room. Also I may start painting on my lap again in the lounge to gain some extra painting time.

But good things come out of spending time with the wife I bought her some clothes for valentines, and she bought my Space Marine for the xbox (good old ebay £10.50) And as I was picking up her parents and had a 4 hour round trip, I decided to listen to an audio book, so I’m listening to the first book in the Horus Heresy. And rather enjoying it. (it’s the first 40k book I have ever read / listened to)

Also as I was a bit geeking deprived (I had to skip my Dungeons & Dragons session this week as well) I came up with the idea of a side project of making a marine in my office colours so I can have him on my desk lol I work for;

Therefore the design I have plumped for is

I will try to make sure there are some rivets in there some where. This project is down the line a bit, but will come into play if I need a break from all the red.

I took a couple of photos of the progress I have made so far on Montymus, I have completed the highlighting of the red, and laid down a base coat of brown, black and boltgun on some of the other parts, the boltgun already having a wash of devlan mud.

I am pleased how the highlighting has gone so far, and now that the in-laws have gone, I can finally get back into the spare room and do some painting tonight.

Hopefully tonight I will work on the purple highlights, and try for them to not be as stark as they normally are, or a tleast have a better gradual change. And depending on how that goes, work on the bone colours.

His face kind of looks like the Sasquatch from "Sanctuary". I don't mean that as an insult... it's interesting contrasting a bestial face with the tidiness marine armor. I realize the face my not look bestial when you're done with it... but right now that's what strikes me, and it's pretty cool.

That was the plan. I have to do it by hand as I lack an air brush. It takes time, but I am really pleased with the result. Watering down the paint is something I can not stress enough.

Well I have come to an agreement with my wife, that I should not be hiding in the spare room every night, and I should probably spend some more time with her. Which is true .. so every other night I get to do some painting, the other nights we watch TV in bed, and while she falls asleep I get to play Space Marine on my Xbox in Bed. So its not all bad

The fuse ( I think) has gone in my desk lamp, so I need to change that to get better light at my desk. I inherited another angle poise lamp with some great reach and pose-ability, but it seems that its fluorescent tube is on its way out as it just flashes and flickers and gives me a head ache. So I need to change that as well. So roll on pay day.

Which means for now I have the ceiling light, and the L.E.D light attached to my magnifier. Therefore these photos are not as good as I would like. Roll on daylight in the mornings The photo of the chainsword arm was so blurry I would not post it. But you get the gist.

I need to push myself to paint when I get in from working the doors on a Friday and Saturday night. This morning as my son decided to wake me up early, I had a little spare time, so put some more brown on the base (the red needs a couple of coats at least compared to the normal skull black. So my plan tonight is to highlight up his face and possibly highlight up his hair. I am going to keep it pretty black and lighten up the black, rather than jumping to codex grey.

the purity seal look good but is a bit on the large side...

all colors came out very good looking tho...what will you do to the studded shoulderpad? will it geta wash of ogryn or sepia?

well recently i got me a tube light...fluorecent as your s i think... if that would start to ficker i wouln´t want to work with that...

and well my wife and me are both when doing hobbywork inside the same room...i got my small desk in the living room...thus we are together and if something comes up in the telly i am able to react in cue... for instance if something nasty happens in desperate housewifes or the mentalist...two shows i don´t watch yet know everything about by only listening^^

M0rdains Marines - Back from the dead, Scratch built thunderfire cannon @ 2012/02/24 13:39:28

Post by: M0rdain

It is probably the light but the Studded shoulder has had a wash of sepia, and then I tried highlight up. But it did not go as well as I hoped. I am thinking that I should do the studs different colour to the white, that way I might be able to blend it better after a further wash. I am thinking of doing them black, to match the trim on the rest of the shoulder pads.

I used to paint in the living room with my wife, but my son is to inquisitive to do this while he is awake any more lol. I tend to only paint while she is asleep, but I may have on the occasion hinted that she might want to go to bed so that I can paint I tried to do my best and not be obvious, but I am as subtle as a rivet to the knee. So we came to a compromise

did that too from time to time...but she isn´t a night owl like me so it most of the times was the right thing to do^^ she didn´t get afronted by my suggestions^^

thank the lords my kids are not that touchy...they are really strongly interested in my stuff...good future hobbiest material right there... but they have the greatest respect to all the dangerous bitz and also to everything i am working on...they are three, verging on the four and the other one turned six the last weekend... so i guess it is the age that helps^^

black studds...hmmm i am not that sure of that but then i can´t remember all your other marines atm...^^ seeing your avatar pic...well...ok... this might actually look good...

And yes the Purity seal is a bit big, but I decided that due to Montymus the Bolds awesomeness he could get away with it lol.

When I paint downstairs it’s on the sofa, so my 17 month old son can reach all my bits, not actually painted down stairs in over a year though. I may take to doing a bit once he is in bed but before my wife goes to sleep

Well I finally got a chance to near enough finish off Montymus the Bold. All that is left is the chapter symbol on his Shoulder (which I will be doing with a micro pen) and to finish off the basing, but I can do this alongside starting the next model. (Although I may create my light box on my next modelling night (Wednesday))

I made a couple of mistakes, where the paint went to areas I did not want, and the pupils on the eyes both went lopsided, but luckily from a distance it does not look to bad. I may try and touch up the odd bit but it does not look to bad (as in it looks like I might of meant to do it lol) I have noticed that I have not painted the lens on the end of the sight, so I will have to break out the greens (or wait until I break them out for the next model)

Once I have built the light box and finished him off I will take some photos with the real camera rather than my phone.

My Dread could really do with stripping and repainting, now that I am better at painting. (and water down my paints *shudder*). Mm maybe i should invest in some brown Detol. … mm I wonder if I have any pictures of it on line …

It was the first thing I painted out of the AoBR box set, and the first model that was not a Necron. Bit ashemd of it really. So I will add it to my to do list, which seems to be getting longer.

Paint 9 Tactical Marines
Prime and paint 10 Assault marines
Finish priming and paint 2 Rhinos.

Finish building the weapons for my RB, then prime and paint it.

Build a Space Marine for my desk at work, prime and paint.

If I am rivety enough, build a Rivety avatar of myself, to aid in my work towards joining the league.

Strip and repaint my dreadnought.

Considering so far this year I have painted one model, this may take some time lol.

@ Vik - thanks.

If he does get a repaint, it will be at the bottom of the to do list

I managed to finish of Montymus the Bold last night. The basing took on a slightly different hue with the red as a foundation compared to the black, so I had to put some more brown down, and I may have put it on to thick as it has lost a little of the detail. I also managed to add the chapter symbol to his shoulder. So once it is dry I can add the static grass and call him done.

I have created my light box, and taken photos of the process as well. One I manage to sort out my desk lamps, so that I can actually use it, lol, I will post the process on here.

Space Marine on the Xbox tonight, So will try to start on …. Mmm what am I doing next … well I will think about what I am starting on next and let you know.

At your request Viktor, here are some photos. You can tell that my Xbox is not plugged into an HDTV *shudder*, it was when it was downstairs, but it’s now in the bedroom. Its so fuzzy I cant even read the text half the time.

So here is my paint scheme for the Striking skulls, its as close as I could get it and is my Assault squad variant.

And I have also done representations of my Nieces schemes.

Hopefully tonight, once I get in from work, I can put some wash down over the rest of the tactical squad.

the first scheme of your niece is looking good...the second i fear is a bit cluttered with too many colors for my liking...

as for the striking skulls scheme... is that for real? one lower arm with purple and the other done in red?

the purple is truly a bold concept, but on your models it looks far better than on the army painter in my oprinion...

The second nieces scheme is meant to be optimus prime .yes it is rather garish but i can't wait to show her the painted.model and compare it to her original drawing.

Actually my assault squad will have the whole of their melee weapon arm purple. compared to the standard that has just the hand.

Well this weekend getting in from work I severely lacked motivation, well it was 00:30 *sigh* But earlier in the week I had built my Light box, and finished off Montymus (apart from the static grass) And last night I decided that I will have to production paint to get enough painted in time for the battle. But last night I sat at my desk for 1.5 hours and never even touched my brush. I am a tad annoyed. But I did set up the production line

So to start with, here is my Light Box creation process. I am sure I read something similar somewhere possibly on here :s

I took a cardboard box, and trimmed off the flaps.

I then drew on a window to each side of the box, that I would remove.

I used a hobby knife to slice through the box with ease to remove the window.

and did the same for the other side.

I then took a relatively flat piece of white tissue paper and tapped it into place on the outside. Normal tape can be used, but for some reason the only tape I could find was gaffa tape, so it was a bit of an over kill. I held onto the space tissue paper in case I need to replace the sides at a later date, due to an accident.

And cover the window on the other side as well (I have done this but not photographed.)

What remains to be done is to tape a piece of white paper to the back, with a curve rather than a fold. But as I am having trouble with my lamps (It seems that replacing the bulb, did not work. Nor did replacing the fuses. I may try putting the old bulb back in with the new fuse. In case I bought the wrong bulbs. Dam funny shaped halogen bulbs.)(and I still need to find a replacement for the florescent bulb in the other lamp. To have a lamp on either side of my desk would be spiffy

The model that should be in spot number 1, is currently on my painting station, blue tacked on top of my paint pot. And has received a was as well as his arms and backpack. But in my haste to do this I forgot to paint the purple and boltgun bits first. Doh! So that is the plan for Thursday, to get all the purple and boltgun done.

was the last pic you posted done with the lightbox already or will a lightbox pic made like this happen soon? i think that is a nice way of making one... one thing tho... i would rather use some wraping paper...you know...that stuff you wrap your bread in for when you go to work/school? that white see through stuff...

and did you use a big loaf of foam for the production line? man how i envy peeps that can keep a clean workspace! mine always looks as if every body puts stuff on my desk...but in fact it is just me...the messy modler^^

No the last 2 photos were not taken in the light box, it just happened to be reasonably sunny this morning so i popped them near the window. Bit of a wobbly shot as my hands were not resting on anything and it was taken on my mobile.

I put my bread in a lunch box so not sure what you mean Vick, lol.

Once i have fixed my dek lamps i will take some photos in it.

Yes it is a large lump of foam, my brother in law keeps an eye out for bits i may find useful. He gave me this, its very handy for keeping limbs organised.

I am wondering if i should tack the limbs onto the tooth picks using pva glue rather than blue tack. What do other people use?

I am a little annoyed at myself, I am not making good use of the little painting time I have. So far on Friday, Saturday and Monday night, I have managed to paint the purple hands and feet of the tactical squad and paint half of the boltgun. *sigh* I need to stop watching CSI on my PC and just stick some music on so I am not distracted. Hopefully I will do better on Thursday (Finish of the boltgun, and do a devlan mud wash on the half that have dry boltgun)

don´t be too harsh on yourself mate! hobby time is just that hobby...you are not on any schedules and you are sadly not paid for it... so if you are not as productive as you may want... there will be times when it is just the oposite...

I have had a bit of a fail in my motivation recently :( I have sat at my desk and just not been motivated to paint. Its my own fault, I should not of tried to paint in a production line it always ruins the feel and makes it feel like a chore. This happened last time I tried it. Hopefully it will come back soon.

But on the upside I am playing on my xbox more and have just got Fallout: New Vegas and I will start playing it tonight after my D&D session

Any tips for playing it?

er...collect everything... get every ounce of amo you can get a hold of? get everything that has no weight? perfect loot...

later on you can bother to get the right guns for the masses of amo you collect...

be true to your character...whichever character you play^^

and yep...productionline painting sucks... majorly! i am with you on every sense here!

and that is the very core why i have no army marching^^

Hopefully once we move and are set up i will get back in to it all. Especially as i was bought a Stormtallon Gunshiop and an Ork Bommer as a leaving present from my last place of work When i get round to it i will palce photos.

Well I am back

I am in my new home (after living at my parents for a few months with my Wife and Son) I have had a good fill of Xboxing (although i am sure i will still keep that up), i have also been drawing on ]spoons for my son and making home brew cider. But i had a hankering for poly cement the other day so went back up to my new study to start modeling. When i left my old office before the move, they gave me a Stormtalon and an Ork Bommer as a leaving gift (How awesome is that!). So i have been putting them together and very much enjoying it. I need to give the Bommer a spray and i can start painting it, but i am waiting on a fresh order of magnets to finish off the Stormtalon as i have missplaced my stash during the move.

And last night i starting doing a bit of a kit bash Steam punk "person" to make use of some awesome steam punk weapons sent to me by rsjake.

To start off here is my new Study / Man cave, stocked ready for any zombie invasion.

Weapon wall & PC and Desk

There is not is not much to show for my Stormtalon as it is in bits and will be painted seperatly, (and i am still waiting for magnets)

And my Ork Bommer, which will be a Burner Bommer. As i don't play Orks, this will just be for fun, and will be hung from my celing above my right hand monitor. I also plan to hand a large bomb off some nytol thread from the under carrige so it looks like he has droping a bomb.

I chose this head as the scarf made me think of Biggles.

Additional exhausts added to the under carraige

Keep an eye for for more photos as i progress back into the hoby

your man cave is a well decorated and tasteful and well kept area... hopefully not for long... we wanna see lots of action there... be sure of our envy

by the way... that´s a count doku light saber? and that saber looks even better!!! and of course, having your own crossbow nailed to the wall... zombies are not a threat anymore for you then

and...since when have you decided to go orks? *scratches head*

oh...and welcome back mister^^

Glad to be back, and the desk is already untidy

I have not gone to the green side, it was a gift from work colleagues (along with the Stormtalon) and i felt bad trading it away so i thoguht i would just have some fun with it .. last nights update to follow shortly.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Well i have put together a base for my Stormtalon, to tie it in with the other models i used some metal debris, and some of the stonework, that my Assult marines are leaping over (a building kit from my necrons) As this does not need any magnets it will probably be the first thing to be base coated. This is one i have found a suitable place to do this (because i have moved house). I used to put a cardboard box up on its end ontop of our Wheelie bin (dustbin / garbage bin) But my wife was not amused with the over spray. This was not suce a problem with the black as the binwas black but it became more of a problem with the red ... So i need to check with the Lady of the house as to where i can spray I might still do it ontop of the bin outside, but just put some newspaper down as well.

Well i started off by removeing imperial icons from the space marine legs and chest. I then found an awesome sort of cap from some tube but looks like an industrial cog, so this was a great peice for the base. I then used some green stuff to "sort of fashion" the tails of a coat down his back and sides. Then i filled in over the tubing on the front of the chest. This had a few different looks as i was not sure what i wanted it to look like. In the end i decided it would probably look like a white shirt. Not sure if it is sculpted well enough for that lol, but hopefully the paint will help. I then decided to put a belt around the midle. I still need to decide it this coat will just be poking out from under the chest plate, or will flow up and over. It would be nice to try and make it come up and over. so we shall see how mu GSfu goes.

I was going to give him a IG backpack with bed roll and sapde, as i liket the look of it (and i wanted it to not be a normal SM backpack. But then i remembered some of the Steampunkery i have seen on here before, and i would need something to produce/store the steam. So i thought more along the lines of a boiler. I had a look though what i had to hand, and came across a couple of grenade launches. with a bit of chopping i thought they looked quite cool as a boiler. I may hav eto GS a band around the middle to cover the join though to make it look like one unit.

Its good to be doing this again

Well i am my typical slow self, as i enjoy my modeling, and watching TV on my computer. (Currently CSI: NY) But i did do some more GS work on my SteamPunky "person" I added a high colar and a cravat, i also posed his head on for a picture. He definatly looks like a Baron Von "something" i am just not sure what that "something" is yet.

I decided that i did need a band on the boiler to cover up the join. Don't worry i have some GS curing to make my rivets from so that i can rivit up the boiler and the Baron. Mmm i think i need to find my existing Super glue, or buy some new stuff.

Looking at the photo it looks like there is a mold line on there i missed so i will deal with that once the GS has cured.

On the upside after a search about i found my hommage to Gitsplitta Mantis warriors, and he is undercoated, so i may be able to start painting him soon.

ohhhh....*blissful silence...*

that steamy person looks very cool! verrry! will the head stay ...the orky one? or are you planning to use another one?
the grenade launcher idea for a boiler with instant added smokestack is a really nice one...tho the connecttion of the two pieces i would have wanted to be done more flush than with a binder... but that´s a rather minor detail compared to the awesome idea...which in fact i will gladly nick out of your yet not cold hands

the mantis warrior looks super! really badass... poweraxe and that mantis sword... where would one like me be able to read about some background of that sword shape by the way? saw that so often on gits thread, but never came around to ask him... maby e git you could answer this one here for me?

oh and the base for the bomma looks like a carnage scene^^

Lets see, the head of the steam punk guy. I was planning on using the ork as I loved his hat :-) but he has not been glued on so open to suggestions. The trouble I had was that the only heads I have are Space Marine, a couple if orks and a few IG. The IG heads all looked too small in the Sm chest peice. I think I need to add some rivets to the boiler and maybe some to the belt and coat as studs. And maybe some studs to the hat, I do like that hat.

In regards to the flyer base, that will be for my stormtalon. I decided to go to town on it as it is such a large peice. The under carriage of the ork bomber has had the hole filled in and will be hung from my celing on nylon thread over my monitor.

I enjoyed making the Mantis warrior Gitz, thanks for the compliment. Vic, I believe the chainsaws are meant to emulate the fore arms of a praying mantis.

M0rdains Marines - Back from the dead, Scratch built thunderfire cannon @ 2012/12/28 22:08:15

Post by: Viktor von Domm

and is there any special tech geeky fluff about the mantis form beside mimiking the matis forearms? just curious...^^

to be honest... there is only one true steampunky head in all the plastic kits of GW known to me... and it is in fact my favorite head...

that one has all the needed feel of the steampunky... if you have him... cool... if not...get him^^

and if the head is feeling too small...don´t get worried... as he is sitting in a hardsuit... the head is meant to be smaller in comarrision to the suit... after all... if he would pull off the armor...then his head would be redicioulsly big compared to the rest of his body...

Well Here is an update on the Space marines that i got my Neices to design a colour scheme for. They are finally finished

Here is the first inital design

and here is how i interupretted it.

I decided to go for the infamous plasma guy as its a fun design.

And here is the finished product.

And here we have myother Neices colour scheme.

and here is how i interupretted it.

This one i decided to make holding a lascannon. T did a lot of repositioning with the leg, and had to convert a rocket launcher into a las cannon.

And here is the finished painted product.

It was a lot of fun doing these, and as i received a pack of 3 marines in Secret santa this year, i am going to write to my Cousin and ask her kids (my God son and sister) and ask them to colour in a picture for me, so i can do 2 more

In regards to my Steam Punkery Guy, that currently has the name of Barron Von Klinkerhofen, here he is headless posing with a lovely gun by rsjake, whihc was the inital muse to the project.

Taking into account what Vic said about the head, i had a search through my available heads. I found one that i throught was suitable, but he needed a mustache adding. Also as it is smaller i added a ring of GS onto the neck of th emodel to raise it slightly and also will act as a continuation of the cravat wrapped around his neck. The photos are not great as i had a lot of trouble trying to focus on my mobile. (lost the charger for my actual camera.)

.

Now i just need to find somehere to spray my models

with the two marines you really did a very good job... love the bright schemes... and the plasma guy effect never grows old on me! that one was planned for my own marine army a long time ago too!... and the lasconon...very cool conversion/scratchbuild!

as for the ´stache... not to sound too dickish...but when i picture a ´stache from that alleged timeperiode...they allways look more pointy...like:

Only Americans of German decent call you krauts... and then we're doing it knowing that we're also krauts, just relocated.

I've never heard anyone that wasn't clearly of German decent do this. I suspect that it would be considered a discriminatory term if people of other nationalities used it... but it's OK if we use it on ourselves. To be honest I don't typically hear many slang terms for people of different nationalities or derivations. That may just be the type of people I hang out with but all-in-all I think it's a good thing.

(sorry for the derailing M0rdian)

M0rdains Marines - Back from the dead, Scratch built thunderfire cannon @ 2013/01/04 14:33:20

Post by: Viktor von Domm

actually the name i only know of because of old WWII movies... and i see how the explanation of the above mentioned would be the only possible funny way to use that term... and it is always the people we hang out with... after all friends are often quite like us... so if you are not known for using such discriminatory terms (which we all just knew here!) then probably a lot of your friends are just like that...

i happen to have mostly non smoking friends... only relatives do smoke^^ (you can´t just pick your family as you can with friends )

and also sorry for that minor derail mordain

While waiting to work out where i can base coat my miniatures, i painted up Neo one of my Tactical Marines.

Then i found a good enough place to base coat, so got as much done as possible.
So Barron has had a black base coat and then some codex grey and a babadab black wash, i decided to try out NMM for a change.

Its not the best picture, as i did not have all my lights on, and my son
