As requested I am putting together a Lamenters blog. Truely not one of the most popular chapters, but from which seems to have gotten more attention thru the release of the Badab War books from ForgeWorld.

Being a Lamenter Player is challenging. I started this Chapter based off of the need to produce a Badab war army for Adepticon 2011. We were all aligned to play one of the Warders and since I did not relish the Executioner or the Astral/Tiger/claws paint scheme I went with the only available choice ( Mantis Warriors were all ready taken by... well if your a regular dakkite you should be able to answer this yourself).

I'm using this as a place to showcase my journey back into 40K. This is the first real Army I have painted since the release of the 3rd ed. The paint standards have greatly improved as well as the techniques. I have been a Dakka regular for some time and have gleened alot of info; My work keeps me from becoming avid painter. So updates will be slow in coming, but will put up what I have to start and hopefull get into a steady pattern.

Again all comments are welcome, thanks for looking.

SL

PS. I'll be updating the pictures . These are alot of WIP shot as I franticly worked to get my stuff done for the tourney.

Here is my opening shot. One of two SR and an Assault squad w/JP

also, great job on the freehand checkers, it looks great

I think yellow looks really good when done right - and to me, these look great!

Maybe I should paint my yellow marines..

What are you thinking about for the bases ?

I love to see lesser used chapters, regardless of your motive for using them. Very well done start to your army. The checker patterns look good. I've been using yellow quite a bit lately, having generally avoided it in the past. It is tough to work with compared to most colors, but you've got a real strong vibrant yellow going that works well for a full army IMO.

Nice intricate work on the checkered patterns. I love the Lamenters and would have painted my Blood Angels as Lamenters if I hadnt discovered them months after beginning my BA project. You have a very nice start though.

Are those the Iron Pattern Jumppacks from Maxmini?

Hi Solar_lion,

Nice looking marines - I'm also considering doing lamenters as my next project, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with yours. Will you be theming your lamenters in any particular way?

Look forward to seeing more!

I honestly didn't know the lamenters were yellow. I thought they were a yellow/green or Chartreuse in color.

I like it so far. You did a great job with the hair on the sergeant.

I don't do Forgeworld, so forgive me, but what the heck is the big flying vehicle thing? Never seen a model like that before.

Those tiny little checks must have given you fits. Kudos on your patience.

Duel face: I thinks it's my camera. Most of my photos are from my phone. I should run them thru photoshop

DX3" Thanks. The bases are actually done. I went with a High desert look. I'm planning on getting some new picks up af all the completed models this weekend.

Astro: Thanks. still working on getting yellow " right"

GVR: Thanks

Element" Thanks, No there Chapterhouse. I didn't put the small little flaps on.. I just figured there Jump not jet packs, How much steering do you get/need in a short jump?

S&D: Thanks.. My Lamenters are a Pre-Badab and Badab era chapter. So I'm going with almost all beakie helms, more gothic looking vech ( using current models, but looking at making them more retro 40K). I almost don't build anything directly out of the box. I pretty much " bit " out all the sprus and build what looks right to me.

Uhlan: I've seen then lots of shade of yellow. from bright to almost golden. I guess that is cool about it. Everyone has the oppertunity to interpret their own version. Look at all the BA chapters here on Dakka. lots of variations. Same for Ultramarine blue.

Jimsolo: Thanks. Still learning all the ins and outs of face/hair painting. light skinned/ blond hair. lots of fade out. The Stormraven is an actual GW model kit. Ironicly I was all set to build one from scratch. ( there are some intresting scratch built versions out there) and bought a lot of kits to use for parts. Then just months till the tourney, GW releases the SR kit. Pressed for time I go with the kit. It would have been intresting to build from My interpetation thou.

Theolfils: Thanks

I absolutely adore these Lamenters - I can't put my finger on it, but the yellow makes the PA look more 'real' than a lot of other schemes I've seen.

Despite your great paintjob, however, the Storm Raven still looks ... not so good.

Looking forward to seeing more of the army!

They look really good SL, glad you finally posted them. I would suggest that the clean yellow paint job does not translate as well through your camera as it does in RL. I have a suggestion for you...

Yellow is one of those colors that responds really well to weathering and battle damage. As a matter of fact it almost requires it to look right. Big surfaces like vehicles just beg for extra detail like that. There are some great tuts on dakka. Give them a go!

A bit of work and your SRs will really look like they've been in the #hit! For a chapter with the storied history of the Lamenters... that's a good thing!

Dev Sarge for Whale music.

First Lamenter terminator I've done. Still would like to do more with the poses and maybe a little more dramatic/ hearldic paint scheme. Still I'm pleased with the first attempt.

I have 4 dev. I'm working on currently and a razorback for them. Will have to re-do the sarge as he will be mailed out soon.

Thanks,

Ice - so far I have a PC, HB, MM and LC, thou I plan to build the additional HB and LC that comes with the spru. I have another Dev. box set as well so I'll do the same. This way I can maximize my load out to any combination.

So that allows me the choice of : 4 LC, 4 HB 2 MM 2 ML, 2 PC. I think I also have bits for 1 of each as well sitting in my bits box. Quite a lot for a assualt army.

Not sure about the AC list. I could use your help here. Git and I have been bouncing around idea as well as trying to work out what we might be facing ( GK - is probably a good bet). Looking at more assualt troops and maybe a dread.

Looking at doing a lot more Air brushing on the razorback. So far I have amazed myself how much you can do with it. I also am doing some conversions to make it look slightly different with an older feel to match my more early era marines. Then on to Lamentering it out.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Post by: Gitsplitta

Dev's can get pretty expensive if you maxx their loadout. So to a large degree it depends on how you plan on using them. My little group of 4 MLs has been very productive and well worth the cost. I've been told by a friend who is also a very good competitive gamer that folks often run 3 MLs with 1 las cannon in the mix in order to give the unit a little extra punch without adding too much to the cost.

I think I've heard of guys successfully running 4 PCs too as a massed anti-marine/terminator type unit. Expensive though.

The nice thing about 4 MLs is that they don't scare anyone, so they tend to be a lower priority target. This usually means they get 2-3 turns of shooting at the least, which really gives them a chance to get some good kills.

Post by: Solar_lion

I'm not gonna perm. set them into squads, I just want to have enough to do what ever combi makes sense at the time.

Still 4 PC going off would be cool and dangerous if they all get hot. Irony in the making.

I 'll also have additional ML available from my Tac squads. So far I haven't squad desiginated any guys yet. Assualt squads at this point all have JP , so no need there.

Ah, there should be a few techniques I've seen out there that could be useful depending on how much time you want to invest in weathering and damage. The first thing that comes to mind is either a sepia or devlin mud wash. Do some tests first to see if sepia would be dark enough for you, would help bring out some more details and create more shading.

After that, if you don't mind spending the time, you could always use the sponge chipping technique to add battle damage around edges of armor. Skys the limit with this as you can always create a bevel effect on the chips by highlighting the edge of the chips as well as using watered down brown/orange paint to create rust stains.

Well, a quick & easy way is how I do my marines. I don't really weather them but I highlight them by drybrushing them very, very dryly. The layers of consecutive lighter shades and then I give them a pretty dark but heavily thinned wash.

If they turn out to light or too dark you can always give them another wash, or gives them another drybrush and a glaze of light & thinned ink/glaze.

Then I do the detailing, like guns, secondary colours etc.

Another very easy and good technique is the following one. It's something you could perfectly do at your current stage of your models. I guarantee you it's quick, easy, and looks amazing. Give your models a wash with heavily thinned black oil paint.

First seal your models with a spray of varnish, I personally prefer satin.
Thin a little blob oil paint with turpentine. (Take the odourless modeling kind) The ratio can be easily 1:10 or higher as the oil paint paste has a very high concentration of pigments. Easiest is to do it in a little jar are paint pot so you can shake it like crazy, it does take a few minutes to mix it well.
Then; apply liberally over your model with a brush. The nature of the oil paint mix over the smoothness of the slick varnish coat will make the wash literally suck itself into every nook & cranny of your model, detailing all the texture in the paint & model. The cool thing is that this highly thinned oil paint will not coat your model in black like an acrylic ink would so you can easily use it over light colours such as white and yellow.
And there's a cherry on top; it's correctable! Oil paint does not set permanently so even after it's fully dry (takes long though, easily overnight) you can just take a brush damp with turpentine and nudge, feather, or even remove any bit you don't like and you'd like to adjust or correct.

When you're satisfied with the result, simple seal your model again with a coat of varnish and voila!

You can use the exact same technique on smaller parts of your model using brown or Burnt Umber oil paint to add rust or grease stains.

Oil paint and modeler's turpentine can easily be found in most hobby stores or online stores such as Ebay.

Both techniques go reasonably fast in batches.
Don't be shy to ask for specifics or other techniques.

If you want a quick 'level-up', that's it right there.

Do you have any examples of the oil weathering Meph? is it your main technique for marine weathering?

sounds pretty good, i've never tried oils before but need something to practice and expand my painting world.

both of the ideas would look great on these lamenters, especially the second one! actually since reading this blog a few days ago i'm in the process of experimenting myself and painting up 3 spare marines i have as lamenters! I really liked the look of the op's ones and couldn't stop thinking about yellow.....

keep it up, it's looking great!

Thanks. I appreciate the help.

My camera makes the pic brighter than they are. I use the Sepia wash on all the joints and cracks, then several more coats of golden yellow followed by a sunny yellow highlight.

I need a way to correct the photo's whiteness.

I 'll check out the sponging technique and the oil techniques. ( I already have the material - wife is art professor).

I'm working on a razorback using egg's AB technique ( thou nowwhere as good) Using Black then to a brownish yellow on the seams, around the hatches ect. Much to learn yet!. So far it is a noticeable improvement from the yellow brightness.

Thanks for all the advice.

Try GW's Ogryn flesh on the armour, i'm using at the moment and it gives a really nice wash without being too dark, you can then easily touch it up again with a bright yellow.

long time no update. Ive been working on several new concepts and these things take time to learn.

I've taken Majors Toms concepts to Magnitize one of my Predators. Thou not exactly the same way with just switching out the guns, but the Sponsons. I did the turret the same way and it works great. First time I magnitized anything. I have to admit those little magnets and superglued fingers make it more challenging than it looked.

Secondly you all have been telling me to get more " dirty " with my yellows. Git, Egg and Meph all have been giving me some good help as well as examples. The follow pics are WIP but I have learned alot. Still need to get the process down in the right order so I can speed up the process and I still consider this a novice attempt.

Also the pic's are on the bright side a bit. The yellow is much browner and the recesses are more brown red. I will still need to blend the main color with the exsisting paint ( I keep going back to fix the modeling flaws - namely the seams and model fit - drives me nuts) and finish with a brighter highlight yellow on the upper areas. after that the detail scratches and track weathering.

Slow but learning...

Pred as a rhino.

Coming along nicely SL. I can see Egg & Meph's influence on your work (that's a good thing). You might take a look at the way I used the airbrush to shade my LS Storms... It looks like what you've started to do here with your rhino hull, just a bit more consistent.

Make sure you paint the edges of the main hatch on the rhino.

Post by: Solar_lion

Yeah. I consider this a first step. I'm still experimenting how much gradiant works for yelow. I'm quessing lighter colors are tougher to do.

Yeah I'll be going over the edges while they are on the model in order to blend them in.

Also learning how important it is to do all the vechicles at the same time ( really the same tech). I'm doing a second predator and 2 Razorback ( all converting to rhinos ) and some of my AB work clearly shows my learning curve.

Cool, that's definitely a good start on weathering.
It's just a matter of building up the layers in a somewhat logical manner. First damaged paint, then rust and oil smears, then soot, then dirt. Of course this by no means a fixed order, I like to play a bit with it. (And also because generally I tend to forget bits and have to over them at a later stage. For ex, I tend to overlook bullet impacts completely until the model is almost finished and then face-palm myself...)

I get that a lot. Still was looking for ways to incorporate the heraldic elements. I like the tail the most, and the landing gear the least. Also wish I had some 3 D doors to put on them. Maybe I try my hand at GS some day.

The eventual plan is to clean them up and then distress them and make them less new looking.

Thanks everyone. It gets easier everytime. The actual color is more like the hatch with the marine in it ( left in Picture)

Things I still need to do on this model:

lenses, light battle damage ( sm arms fire) weathering, Add a few more detail peices ( scrolls and seals ect) dirty the tracks, antenna..finish the guns and gun housing.

Do the same for it's sister Predator.

Meph. Like the oil dirty effect. Tried it on a couple of super clean Dev. models. really easy to " wipe away " the excess areas or mistakes. A little more practice forthcoming. Gonna use to weather my SR a bit.

Thanks again

Cool, glad to hear you've crossed the threshold. ^^ Oh, and because of a varnish-can-atmospheric-frosting-frak-up (nearly ruined all of my marines and land raider) I had to switch to gloss varnish before the oi inking. I was always a bit skeptical of gloss varnish but that works even better and is easily matted down again afterward with some satin.

Don't be shy to post some pics, as I'm curious.

What on the agenda.. work on the Predators and all the interchange parts and variations, 4 scout bikes, 2 five man Assault squads with interchangeable Backpacks and Jump packs. If time I'll continue to detail my Dev squad. All above items built and ready to paint. Whew!

I've started building 3 Drop Pods. Here's hoping for no interuptions or a winning lottery ticket. I'll take either

They are just basecoated yellow then with an Upper brighter yellow for highlight. I'm quessing My Carmera phone will not be able to pick up the difference; So these may look like yellow blobs.
Once I pick out all the black they should start to pop. (Trying the Eggroll method of painting w/ Meths Oil "dirting" to follow). Tried for more heroic poses. They are a combination of BA, BT, Chaos and DA sprues.

For general purposes I'm calling this Squad 1 - With backpack then Jumppacks.

Close up of my Heroic sarge.

Pic of Squad 2

Everyone will get better bases after they get finished.

Hopefully I'll get some more time to start doing some of the other colors. Let me know if you need any parts ( inferno pistols ect.. ) I used so little of all the stuff from the respective boxes.

Ironicly I'll have to buy all these pieces again ones I decide to build my Death company. I'm thinking of doing them white or bone colored with red crosses, or maybe Black robes with white armor underneath ( using the DA boxes. )

Actually I was referring to the excellent quality of your photographs now that you have my old light box... the painting looks like crap.

Well, let's see... Looking at my list, I could use the following...

Blood Chalice

That's it... all other gear in my army is not BA specific. I had some inferno pistols originally but had to drop them to shave points (and as the role of those squads changed). I can probably scratch build a chalice if you don't have one handy.

You know, robed marines *sound* very cool... and *should* be very cool... but most of the attempts I've seen just fall kind of flat with me. Maybe it's just my aesthetic...

Post by: Solar_lion

Sorry no chalices.

I'll have to " robe" one out as a test model. Robes most of the time look too plain. They do beg for decoration.

Went back over my assault guys last night using Egg's technique of hitting the figures with the the darker hightlight from the air brush. Thou I don't seem to have the light touch he does, I thought they came out fabulous. Now I'll do all the black and metals followed by some oil weathering.

Feeling good about how much nicer they are looking. Too bad I have to work all weekend. Also started a GMS Apothacary for Ice

Git's has a good yellow technique on his blog for his tranquility vets. ( if you can find it ). I started with that. They are a brighter yellow than my current color..

Here is what I currently do . I base white, then I use a air brush paint similar to GW golden Yellow. Then I use another air brush paint called " Yellow rust " using a less than skilled Eggroll technique to hit the shaded areas. I do the highlights with GW sunburst yellow. You can do the same with the brush but have to do more blending between the base yellow and the rust. This step is already done with the abilities of using an airbrush. I have done both with what I think was very successful. The AB just saves time.

After that . I follow eggrolls steps of doing the metallic’s and the " black" areas ( such as joints and weapons ). Any dry brushing, face painting, details are done at this time as well Some chips, scratches and battle damage next ( thou I'm not yet good at it yet) . I then coat the entire figure in a gloss coating. Use an paint thinner ( non - toxic ) to thin some black and or dark rust oil paint. Wash the figure ( this will seep into the cracks and " dirty " the figure up a bit. I take a q-tip and " wipe" of an areas I don't think look right. Let dry for 24 hrs, the spray with a dull coat. ( I call this the Meth method) Then Base.

At least that’s my current method. Hope this helps.

I’ll soon have my scout bikers done and pics posted.

As Promised.. Somehow my camera doesn't like yellow . Most of these pics have more glare than they really are, making them brighter than they are, but anyway...

Scout Bike squad - 2 of them need weathering on the wheels, all then need to be based.

This pic is the most complete weathering with all the aformentioned techniques to date.

A Dread that is still much a WIP. The Head and the white front body area will get some attention - lots of Glare on these pic's

Lastly my second assault squad WIP - with backpacks

Arg... glare

Same quad with Jump Packs

Arg... glare as well.

Time to invest in a real camera and stop using the phone.

Git: Thanks.. it was nice to have a couple of days of just painting. Made a jump in my list. Using eggrolls method helped. More practice and I'll start to feel more confident with it.
Both the Assault and the Dread have no weathering. So hopefully this week. Got some additional oil paints to try.

Calas: Thanks. and Thanks for posting. Critique always welcome.

Next... plan to finish the Assault squad and the dread. First attempt to do the power weapon with the airbrush. Like to get the dozer blades on the Predators.

You don't have to actually use the FW pod as a Lucius Pattern Pod, it could be just a regular dread pod. They are quite pricy though, and not the best FW kit I've worked with.

I does have the tactical bonus of being much bigger than a normal pod... giving you an extra inch or so of deployment threat range. However if you aren't going to assault directly out of it, that doesn't do you much good.

They are insanely priced though... even more so than most FW things.

Hey SL... looking back at your predators... I think the gun barrels are a little bright looking when compared with the rest of the vehicle. You might consider at least a sepia, delvan mud or badab black wash on the various parts in order to make the feel of them match the rest of the tank.

I like the pod solar. I know you mentioned you were still doing some final touches but it occurred to me that you damaged the pod but kept a nice clean white. It messes with my senses a bit. The white is awesome just seems a bit out of place with the great battle damage.

Nice job on the red heart / tear lamenter symbol btw.

Ice: Very true.. yep haven't done the oil weathering yet. This should tone down the white. Thou I must admit I have a preference to the white as it represents the heraldic element of the chapter. Some of the white sections do have a little more damage. Just not the one you see in the pic.

I actually tried doing a stencil for the heart symbol .Total failure. Future learning and practice item. If anyone has any tips, I'd be appreciative.

Nice looking drop pod SL. For stencil tips, try printing it out on your printer first, then you can cut it out and use the paper directly or if you want, trace the cutout onto masking tape, then cut out the masking tape and use the tape on the model. I did the paper only method for my skull for my DC rhino a year ago. Worked ok but did have a bit of cleanup to do afterwards.

Post by: Solar_lion

Thanks egg.. means a lot.

I tried both. For such a small heart and drop I had massive bleed thru. it was all clean up at that point. It became easier to paint them by hand . Not perfectly matching but still close.I made a specific design choice to only include them on one side, same with the ramp checkers.

At 50 my hand eye cord is not what it used to be.
I'll try a larger stencil - when I re-do my SR.

You could use a stencil as a guide to draw the heart using a illustration pen, then just paint it in by hand. You could use a red pen, that way you wouldn't have to worry about painting over the line.

Your doing a great job solar lion
I would NEVER sally forth into the wild yellow yonder. Painting yellow is so painfully brutal. In all honesty i am not sure how you do it. BTW. the suggestion that was made about using the artists pen and the stencil to draw in the bleeding heart. Priceless. i am so stealing that.
i too also love the fact that you are modelling up a lesser known chapter. and one that has scout bikes. Amazing. keep up the good work.

Post by: Solar_lion

Thanks Palehorse, Ouze, MPand Avatrass.

Yellow is getting easier. I use a red rust as a base and shading. I find that it works well with Sepia and depending on the Yellow layer, It bleeds through very nicely.
On my figures I use Eggrolls method of highlighting. so some under areas and edges are just the rust color. I try to let some of it bleed thru to the upper plates by top down ABing a lighter yellow. So far so good. Yellow just takes some practice to figure out what secondary colors look good with it. Personally I find white the hardest to do . But recently started adding a bit of blue/grey to my whites and they look more subdued and allow for a white highlight.I recently did this on my side panels on a Vindicator. still looks white but not bright white. Learn as I go. I'll try to get a picture up.

Also started my Death company. Swapped out the heads for he skull looking chaos heads. Removed the arrow on the forehead. I like the way they look. The plan is to paint them white with red X's. Giving them a Bone look. I'll still do the Lamenter badge on the shoulder. Hopefully have a test paint job this week.

Sennacherib: Thank. Yellow was a pain to start with, but It's getting easier with time and the slow learning curve of using my air brush. Thank Git for the stencil Idea. Honestly sometimes the simple solutions are overlooked. We started the Badad war armies in responce to going to Adepticon. Since Git already had the Mantis warriors and I didn't relish the paint scheme for the Tiger claws or the Eexecutioners, I started the Lamenters.

Scout bikes are useful in the right combination of units. See some of Gits battle reports. He has used them sucessfully multiple times. However timing is everything.

Comments always welcome.

White... I went with blue grey. I'm thinking I should have gone darker! Here is some of the results. Only one figure below has all the base colors.

I finished with a top down light spray of white.

On a different topic. Mostly done with my first Vindicator..some weathering on the white and treads need more work.

Post by: Eggroll

Yes, it looks like it could have started with a darker base. White is a tricky colour to shade though. One thing you can always do is start with a darker base, AB an off white and do edge highlights with pure white. Another thing that should help is more weathering such as dirt/dust build up along the bottom of the vindi which will offset the flat colours a bit more.

Solar_lions everything is a project  @ 2012/02/27 14:04:09

Post by: Solar_lion

Yeah .. I think I should have gone heavier ( used a darker grey) on the blue/ Grey initial color. Too invested to go back. However I have more DC to do so the next ones I do will darker.

My initial attempts with sponge weathering look like crap, so Invested in some weathering powders.

More of the DC with all the base colors..

I like the white but the eventual plan is to wash them in Sepia to give them a Bone look. I have to try one and risk not liking it or do up a test figure. They definitely need some sort of wash for definition.

Not much progress on the Models due to spending a load of time on the display for Adepticon (and Money). Now that it it 99.9% complete I'll be diving back in to figure painting. I'd thought I post a pic of my Death Company (as they were previously ) on a section of the display. Please remember the figure are not finished.

Hope you enjoy.. as always comments welcome..

Not yet.. Don't wanna spoil the suprise. Only Ice has seen the full shots. My teammates have only gotten bits and pieces. I'm sure there will be a Adepticon Warders Blog where we will post eveything. Most importantly pictures of Git. ( single most asked question last year)

I will say this is only a small section of the board. Like they say .. go big or go home. ( where am I going to put this after Adepticon?)

We look forward to you joining us next year as being an
"official' Warder and all.

Truly.. per continued requests...here is another shot ( last one ) teaser... I need to get to my list so I'm postponing any more work on the display till done.

On a side note, I got a real camera,, Nothing fancy, but have photoshop now installed so I can manipulate the poor quality pictures to at least look correct.

Painting terrain is way easier than painting figures. It is I who needs lessons from you. When I get down there again your going to have to give me PW painting lessons.

Started my 2 new sergeants for my assault squads. Changed them up a little by giving them Power axes instead of Power swords.

Also started a DC dread specifically to match my DC.

No problem SL. Painting figures isn't all that difficult either. Not that I'm a master, but it looks decent event to a dakka standards so I'm satisfied. Be happy to show you what I know. I can teach you the zenithal trick for vehicles too if you want. Also easy.

Looking forward to the new figs, especially the dread.

Thanks. It was a major build designed to keep the judges entertained and at our display longer all in the hopes of getting a boost in our score.

Since this is 100% scratch built ( build as you go plans) Hopefully they will see our figures and display as more than just kitbashed!.

Look for a "Warders" Adepticon blog in the near future.

How about a hop across the pond? Sure you'll blow your excess baggage with the board, but still...

The board is looking stunning mate, most impressed. On a side note, your camera seems to be lending a greenish tinge to your yellows? Just doesn't do them justice and all.

IMGI - Hopping the pond this summer in fact. Actually Ireland for my wife and I's 25th . I'm still playing with photoshop. I don't have much in the way of direct lighting, so I'm on a learning curve on how to correct pics. All good on the bits , I brought 3 Furisos when they came out thinking I wanted each variant.

Vit - Not in the near future, I have 3 SR's right now ( one which is planned for a re-paint for thing 1's Doom eagles ) I already order to much stuff from FW. I got a relic Contemptor and a load of weapons waiting for me at Adepticon. Tried to add the new termies but they are not allowing them to pre-reg them.

On a more personal note - I've managed to get my DC dread all base colored. This weekend will be a paint till you drop for Adepticon weekend. I'll definitely will have new pics. I’ll even promise to take them on the display as it make a great backdrop.

Solar_lions everything is a project  @ 2012/04/02 13:59:37

Post by: Solar_lion

Thanks..

I used a grey blue grey undercoat then a white. The white is Air brushed from the top direction leaving the blue underneath to blend in the white, The dread is more this way than the troopers. ( I didn't go dark enough ). My white is also not pure white- it has some off white qualities. I then hightlight with skull white on the edges.

Thanks 3D!

Thanks Egg.. Painting the Terrain was good for helping me get more comfortable with the AB. It's true what you all have been saying.. practice, experiment and more practice.

On my Dread...You were right about going darker with the basecoat on the white. I went with a blue/grey that was akin to what you see on military naval vessels. At first I thought it would be to much of a contrast, but after going with an off white, it blended well, leaving a more purewhite for the highlight. I think at first you try to stay away from contrasting colors , but they do provide strirking results.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Game 1
First game against Nids. Git and I teamed up. Note this is not a battle report per say. Just some shots and commentary on what was going on…

Set up and opening move

They Covered the back edge!

Ending of the Nid movement

Mass movement Left – We managed to get off some shots, but not enough to thin the Gargoyles. Sternguard and Assault squads go to work

Genestealers on the flank left…

Move up the center

Genestealers on the right flank

Our Position

Death company drops out to push forward on the left flank

After much Close combat the sternguard flamers melt Genestealers in droves. Leaving only. DC finishes them.

Ready to sell ourselves to hold or contest the objective on the right.

Push around the center we go ( note we removed the SR to move things easier

Right flanks Nids push forward

Incoming fire takes 2 Marines and destroys Vindi.

DC and SR make a push to the objective

Not quite enough to make it past the wall and into the nids - Game over! Another turn we would have taken their objective , but the would have swarmed ours as well. Fun game.

Nice series SL... pretty much a bat rep without the bat rep! My one flamer took out something like 11 stealers... pretty amazing & very anti-climactic for the death company mop-up.

We were trying to make a fight of it at the end there, just ran out of turns! (game ended on T5) Fun game, great opponents...

It was the stuff of heros.. that flamer deserves a putity seal.. yeah I was just learning to use the DC... The dread did all the killing with 5 million attacks ( a wee bit stretch there) I did get my points worth in the later games.

2nd game against IG and SM .. this time Mr. M. and I
Starting set up

Scouts take shots but are ineffective. Sharks DP seals in the armor. Libby and melta disables the Chimera in the opening.

Flanking bikes jump on the board. SR , Sharks dread and RB start disabling the IG tanks. All the while getting pounded by the Manticore and Thudd gun

Death company deploys to deal with intruders in the quarter of the table

DC take out their rage on the scouts

While the dread feasts of some scout bikers

Bad day to be a scout biker

IG Russes go to work on the sharks Razorback. Sharks pile out o deal with more scouts. More pounding by the by the Manticore and Thudd gun

Finishing up the scouts.. massive fire eliminates all but the Sharks Libby… you can see him on the right side of the DP

Move up to support what we thought was the counter attack with the IG troops.

Push with the DC and assault squads on the left flank. Libby thaken to the Emperors grace ( whats left of him)

Another pounding takes out the other RB. SR and Sharks Dread pound on the tanks

DC moves up.. SR zooms to help put on right flank

Dread takes the brunt of the guard ground attack.

Lamenter assault squad backs up to secure the quarter.

Vindicator tries to take out the remaining enemy RB troops

But scatters almost taking out he Sharks dread

Game ends as the DC and Chaplain take revenge on the veterans that killed the dread.. Game over..

Crap... I need to post the last two games at Adepticon...

I had some time yesterday to briefly assemble 1 of my 2 Contemptors. the arms are all Magnitized and the elbow joints are all hindged. ( including all the weapon mounts )

Hopefully I'll get some base color on these this weekend as well as my take on YB Fire hawks.

How on earth did you hinge the elbows?

Solar_lions everything is a project  @ 2012/06/01 16:14:07

Post by: Solar_lion

Pin hinge - Flush the pins - tack the ends.

You can see the movement in the middle picture. The Right arm ( of the Dread ) is in a different position ( Magnitized ) and the guns elevation is different ( elbow hinge ) . Every weapon has a hinge set up. so easy to do.
I also magnitized the Hvy Bolter arm to take the magazine on either side so I can use it on either arm. ( Mag has to be on the outside )

SL

Solar_lions everything is a project  @ 2012/06/01 16:20:43

Post by: Gitsplitta

So, how do you stop the arm from just flopping freely down from the hinge... what holds the arm in the "up" position?

Solar_lions everything is a project  @ 2012/06/01 16:23:21

Post by: Solar_lion

Your pin and hole need to be tight. I have that issue on only one LC ( the first one 1 did ) I matched up the drill bit with the paper clip wire I was using. no issues with the others, and as time goes by I can repair by using a bit larger wire. Years from now and after the contemptor is no longer a viable choice.

SL

Solar_lions everything is a project  @ 2012/06/01 16:45:10

Post by: Yellowbeard

Wait, I'm not following. What do you mean by "pin hinge"? Do you put a pin in each piece of the arm and then connect? What do you mean by "tack the ends"?

Sounds like a very cool project, though. I could see it being very useful on dreads and other big models. Nice work so far.

Solar_lions everything is a project  @ 2012/06/01 17:07:20

Post by: Solar_lion

Like the hinge on a door, except the pins ends are tacked with Super glue. The center bit move freely.
If the hinge pin is smaller than the hole then the weapon moves with gravity. if tight then you have more posing opportunities.

Yellowbeard wrote: Sounds like a very cool project, though. I could see it being very useful on dreads and other big models. Nice work so far.

Actually you'll find it easier than most. the sections are fairly big Again as always use the appropriate magnets and you’ll be fine ( more powerful for the arm to body attachment, less so for the weapon to arm.
If you want I’ll snap some pics of what I did to the peices tonight and post them tomorrow. However once you get it all out and examine the peices it'll be obvious. ( like that word! )

I most likely will not get any paint on it unless I got the other one together. A FW Ven. Contemptor. I'll be taking extra care to get the magnets lined up so I can switch out weapons on both of them; besides the time it'll take to do that ( plus a more dramitic pose), I want to base paint them together so it looks consistent. As I work tomorrow, time is already a premium.

Finally got time to post more of our battles at adepticon.

Game 3. This time I was paired up with Briancj.. Playing against a Ork hoard. I didn’t get as many pictures as the first two games. Starting to get worn down.

Opening set up

Bold plan initiated. Brian’s Minotaurs drops on the left flank right in the middle of the ork buggies and boys.

Meanwhile the battlewagon rams the center building cauing the objective to become dangerous terrain,. SR destroys BW Boys pile out. Baal pred ( not seen on the right off screen ) starts unloading.

SR get blown up by a lucky Kopter rocket ( who knew?) DC goes into action, Brians minotaurs hold position, ready to make a run for the objective

Overall look at the battle – sorry for the blurry pic.

A single minoutaur still holds the buggies at bay! The buggies don’t advance toward the center. Partially as they piled out and would have to pile in again. The also are facing directly a Vindicator who has move forward to threaten the lane between the building and terrain and Whirlwind who keeps there heads down. They are staying out of range.

View from the other side of the table.

Death company goes to work, Dread gets taken out before it could slice and dice, but the Chaplain leads his men into the fray.

Win for us. Great players. Were very friendly and really made this game one of the most enjoyable of the day. Guys I would play anytime.
Was surprised that they took the bait that tied up the left flank and didn’t push forward. Gutsy move by Briancj. They however keep us guessing what was coming next.

Learning for the game. Don’t underestimate them puny Kopters..

And you as well.. I like how fast you are starting to develop stratagies and tactics.. even if they don't always go as plan. Your advice has made me a better player and saved us from losing horribly; not just by a little we seem to end up with.

Speaking of Adepticon .. Here is the last game.. Git ... feel free to correct or add if I got things messed up.. time fades my old memory..

Here is some pictures of the last game. It was Git and I . Not as many pict of the current action . I’ll try to fill in what I remember.

SW/ BA set up..

Blurry pic.. git drops his sternguard behind the Assault troops hoping to cause enough damage thru shooting to eliminate a unit.

No such luck and they turn around and get ready to charge.

SW cav move up the center

As you can see we backed in the corner hoping to give us extra opportunities to focus on shooting at the incoming SW cav.( and to stay away from the all ML Long fangs. ( how un-BA can you get))

Since there was a designated squad to wipe out ( Gits had it ) I moved my assault up to buffer the TW’s .. their assault squads having finished with gits sternguard move to the objective. The SR moves to intercede and drops the DC as a deterrent.

My assault squad get anninaliated by the Uber TW lord and pounce on the vindi. Meanwhile the DC dread chews through all the BA assault marines near the objective (all of them.. Talons rock) The other DC marines are sad ( thus now really mad) An SW assault squad with a libby take pot shots as it move to secure the flank.

DC goes to engage the TW’s as Git’s assault squad jumps to secure the objective.. Where is that SR? Oh he failed a Difficult terrain test an blew himself up ( WTF ) Vindi had its weapon destroyed so it tank shocks but fails to do anything.

Finally finish off the TW cav.
Shooting .. gets the DC and some of Gits marines killed but the SW assault as well. Nothing left to do Game over.. SW/BA win

Great game with guys that really knew the rules. It was great leaning how some of the rules really work. Love to have a rematch someday!

AH - Absolutly

Actually ( thou I admit Bias ) Git's assessment is usually very good. - Strategy
Executing the strategy is always the hardest part for any of us. – Tactics..( I find we are getting better ). Truth to playing more develops better decision making.

IMO - Wining armies know this and generally stick to the plan but can and are willing to adjust their tactics with the strategy in mind as things progress. There is something to be said for choosing the right combination of troops and abilities. ( Some codex’s are better than other for WAAC style of play. And the balance issues have been discussed infinitem )

Things we can do better – know the rules. Understand how our armies work and that of our opponents. Playtest and try new tactics.
Things that we can’t.. Dice (Read some of Git’s battle reports – they do him no favor – and yet he still manages to keep it close - something to be said for that! )

Git and I games were very challenging. all in all I think we did fairly well.
Ramblings over.

SL: that was not rambelings that was insight to yalls play style and theory to your amries. I will agree that some armies are suited for WAAC play than others but each army has a fighting chance of winning some more than others.

i totally agree with you that knowing the rules is a good thing, have you thought about picking up other dexes to learn how other armies work?

yea the dice gods are fickle beasts but hey thats half the fun right there.

ya you guys did do fairly well glad to read your reports. always entertaining and full of insight.

Yeah. most of us read other codex’s, but really are limited at playing against them.
It one thing to read a book on Brain surgery, another to do it. ( or your not touching my brain defense ).

now we wait to see what 6ed. turns us into. Adepticon will need to have a full compliment of rule judges next year.

As a person who is deep into actual military history. I often think on why things turned out the way they did. So...your losses are opportunities to develop strategies and on the field tactics to counter you opponent. This is why I love watching others play and bat reps as well. seeing is believing.

Good to know.. you'll have to shout out some tips every now and then. Always use agood advice.
I actually like the concept of playing the orks, nids and crons. if nothin but for the change of trying something different. Someday I mighy do... ( pause) IG or(wisper) Tau . If nothing to ry my hand at painting them. But in reality I'll be putting these things in my will before I get to painting them.

So far my toughest match up has been against space wolves. (one game was thunder wolf spam and the other list i play regularly is razor back spam)

they are both touch builds what is strange is they were both light on long fangs. but what that lacked was put into other nasty things.

Strategy was sound. . imagine how different a game if the Sternguard had actualy mangled the BA assault. The game would have gone completely different. you would be saying what a great tactic. Then dealing with the TW would have been a more controled and heavy responce and put us in more control of the flow. TW dealt with by DC and assault squads, SG remnants move to the other objectice joined by vindis dealing with SW libby rhino SR to assist where ever. Coulda shouda woulda....looks like a different. game

This time the SG didn't get the rolls they needed. Doesn't make the tactic wrong. Just risky. We were defensive after that. Still I would be the first to say I'd do that again! Feasibly sound. Point made.

Untouched. Complete. New.

Bits. Something I'm guessing FW doesn't want to get into. Business wise probably doesn't pay out.

If your gonna use the mold it make no sense to just produce the missing part. It would probably cost more to cater to indivdual requests or special orders than replace some models.

Lastly it's good customer service. It in turn brings the customer back to spend more $. I'm proof!
