EDIT: Decided to re-purpose this old thread to showcase all of my completed Thousand Sons - keep everything in one place, hehe. I've put the dreadnought and boarding marine that I've posted previously into this first post, but as I complete other models I'll just add them in a reply, then make a sort of table of contents in here.
----------
19/02/12: Pre-Heresy Bike Sergeant
12/04/12: Post-Heresy Terminator Squad
25/08/12: Armies on Parade 2012 Display Board - Post-Heresy
02/09/12: Pre-Heresy MkIC Deimos Pattern Rhino
03/09/12: Pre-Heresy Tactical Squad
11/09/12: Pre-Heresy Contemptor
26/11/12: Dark Vengeance Chaplain (Not Sons-related, but oh well.)
30/10/14: Dark Vengeance Chaos Lord
01/05/15: Pre-Heresy Tactical Squad Amosis
03/05/15: Pre-Heresy Scout Squads
11/06/15: Deathwatch Character - Jahi
01/08/15: Chapter Master Akil Amari
08/03/16: Land Speeder Storm & Scouts
02/05/16: Games Day 2012 Blood Angels Captain (Again not Sons-related, but at least he's red!)
13/10/16: 2016 Imperial Space Marine - Pre-Heresy XV Livery
20/10/16: XV Legion Praetor Tribune Librarian in Tartaros Terminator Armour
16/11/16: Slaughterpriest with Hackblade (Again not Sons-related, but at least he's red, part two )
12/04/17: 40k Ahzek Ahriman
23/05/17: Canoness Veridyan (once again not Sons-related but hopefully still acceptable!)
09/07/17: 30k Thousand Sons Terminator Captain Nadim
----------
Captain Akil, Terminator Sorcerer of the Thousand Sons and one of the commanders aboard the vanguard cruiser Aten. Any comments or crits are very much appreciated!
The runes on the staff read "All is Dust" in Egyptian. Both his arms are magnetised so I can pose his arms and switch weapons around, though I still need to finish painting all his different weapons. He's also magnetised to the base so I can put him on different bases. I love magnets.
Akil with a combi-melta (not flamer, as I originally posted ) and power fist!
Those who follow my WIP thread would've seen the in-progress shots of Niu. But now that he's actually finished, here he is in all his completed glory! Showing off both his dual close-combat weapons and plasma cannon. The tabard, chain and attaching scarabs were made from scratch with greenstuff, and were my first proper foray into sculpting.
Frozen Mountain Lake!
Pack Ice!
The Forgeworld special model for Games Day Australia 2011. Had a lot of fun painting this guy. First time trying out zenithal lighting with wet blending and such.

This is gakking amazing. I've been painting for over a year and am yet to achieve such high standards. IMHO this is 90% of 'eavy metal teams standards.

Great Work. The runes add a lot to the staff. Kinda wish that powerfist was in more focus, but from what i can tell the "power" field on it looks great as does the rest of the model. GJ.

Hey. Very sharp looking model. Usually I hate overdone bases but the lava is quite eye catching but doesn't crowd out the figure.
I've been struggling with golds a bit and I like yours. Did you you mix in a skull white or something to edge out the gold?
49604
Post by: Skits
Thanks! I actually use the really old version of Shining Gold, the one that comes in the hexagonal pots (when I run out of that I think I'll cry). It's a little less orange than the current Shining Gold, which works well for my Sons. I wash it with Gryphonne Sepia, then highlight the edges with plain Mithril Silver.
Yes, I admit it, I'm a straight-out-of-the-pot painter. :(

It looks really good!
The only crit I have is that the gun should be a color other than blue... as it is it blends in with the rest of the model too much. Either a contrasting or neutral color would help it to stand out.
Great job!

Hm, yeah, I see what you mean. What colour d'ya think would work? Plain gunmetal doesn't show the gold detailing up as well, and I think red would look... odd against the blue. My original squad of Thousand Sons had their guns painted Enchanted Blue instead of Regal - would that work a bit better?

This by far is not 'eavy metal stuff.
I'm not saying that this is ugly, its not by a loooooong shot. Just bugs me that somebody said 'eavy metal standards.
Besides that;
*drool* It looks really really nice and soothing, the paint looks the be a lil' thick on the cape though.
But I do enjoy watching all the little beautiful painted details.

Gorgeous clean work! Just superb!
I particularly like the contrast of the red base and the blue model, it really makes for a nice photograph as well!
The gold is very crispy, it looks like gold and whatever technique used to produce that effect is convincing!
All the line work is very neat and crisp.
Excellent conversion green stuff? cape furr in the rear shot? Unique and well executed!
Good job with multiple directional view images!

Pre-Heresy Bike Sergeant!
Had a bit of a fright with this guy - was putting the finishing touches on the base when I accidentally dropped him onto my tiled floor - and heard him shatter. D: Fortunately, only the weapon broke off (which it has a habit of doing anyway) and the bike popped off the base. No noticeable damage to the paint job, and he was easily fixed. Still, heart attack. Finally, after about five months, the whole Terminator squad is finished! At least, until I find things that need fixing, anyway.
I've got a lo~ve~ly bunch of terminators, deedly deet dee, here they are all standing in a row!
Jabari, Athanaean, rather quiet and tends to bide his time in the background, possibly plotting your demise.
Zuberi, Athanaean, and a bloody talkative bastard... as long as you can hear telepathy.
Nassor, Pyrae and heavy weapons specialist with a penchant for setting things on FIRE.
Kamuzu, Pavoni apothecary and damn grumpy bastard.
Asim, Raptora and a stolid old codger.
I'm so glad they're finally done! Now I just have to decide what I'm working on next... x_x

Very good job on the ice bases. What methods did you use on those? The paint on models is nice and smooth.
49604
Post by: Skits
The ice bases? Mostly just dry-brushing. I undercoat with Fenris Grey, then drybrush a heavy coat of Hawk Turquoise, then drybrush Ice Blue, leaving some of the turquoise showing in the deeper areas, then do the same with white. I might have added some Regal Blue in at some point as well, I don't quite remember. Been a while since I did one of the ice bases. The clear icy-looking bits are done with a thin layer of water effects stuff.
Hope that helps!

Apologies for not updating this thread more often! Haven't gotten many new models actually finished lately, and then when I finally did, I decided to go and rebuild my lightbox, bleh.
But in the meantime, the Armies on Parade store competitions were on today, and my display won my store's heats.
Pic at the actual store from the GW guys, since I completely forgot to take my own photos there, derp. Hot Crossing:
My board set up at home for photos!
Everyone got out of the vehicles, just in case the tanks rolled 1 for their dangerous terrain test while crossing the bridge.
My old Terminator Captain Akil Amari, with brand new pauldrons that I finished just in time for the competition so he'd match the rest of the Terminators, safeguarding the Armies on Parade medal.
So now, it's down to Games Day Australia for me! And then maybe I'll finish rebuilding my lightbox, heh.
49604
Post by: Skits
Okay, so I've actually had this baby finished for a good while now, but I decided to rebuild my lightbox and only just got around to completing it. Even so, I think I'll have to rebuild it again sometime. :\ Or at least get better lights. Anyway! Presenting my MkIC Deimos pattern Rhino for my pre-Heresy Thousand Sons army! Lesson learned: Don't glue on the exhaust pipes until AFTER painting this pattern of Rhino. Ugh.

Oh man, now I know what I must do with my new Chaos models from the DV kit. Pre heresy Thousand Sons ftw!
49604
Post by: Skits
@Gravity: The world needs more pre-Heresy Sons! And those DV models look like so much fun to paint.
Now, something else I've also had done for a while! The squad that get to ride around in the previously posted Deimos Rhino. Just a basic tactical squad from one of the paint set starter boxes. Spot the small bits of greenstuff! :p
Ugh. Next time I photograph any of my pre-Heresy guys, I think I'm gonna need to use a coloured backdrop. Their white trim tends to disappear into the background. :|

Post by: Myrthan
Very nice boarding marine :3 Automatically Appended Next Post: How did you do the red?
Doubleposting sorry
49604
Post by: Skits
Thank you!
The red takes a bit of work, hehe. I undercoat with Mordian Red, then paint the shadowed areas with a 50/50ish mix of Scab Red and Fenris Grey. Then I use straight Scab Red and layer it on thinly over the red/grey mix areas, to blend it in with the lit areas of the model. Then I layer a thin coat of Red Gore, focusing it on the more lit areas. Then I add a thin layer of Blood Red on the most lit areas and blend it in with the Red Gore - I might do a few alternating layers of Gore/Blood to get the right tones. Then I'll edge highlight with straight Blood Red.
Hope that helps!
49604
Post by: Skits
Finished my Contemptor just in time for Games Day Australia - not happy with the red, I worked it up too much, which made the highlights too subtle and lost most of the purple in the shadowed areas. Ah well, 'swhat I get for a rush job. Still pretty pleased with the rest of him, especially the tabard and ornaments.
Didn't get anywhere in Golden Daemon, unsurprisingly. XD However, my Armies on Parade board apparently came in the top five! So I'm pretty happy with that - it's a better result than my AoP got last year. Next year, aiming for top three!

Nice painting, but unless I'm mistaken weren't the Emperor's Children the only ones allowed to wear the Aquilla pre-heresy?

My Sons shall march forward, their minds clear, their bolters resolute, knowledge filling their hearts in themselves.
I still feel the Sons could turn back to the Emperor if given the chance. Admittedly a supremely strong one if Magnus could just find that one answer.

Perhaps he has, and it lies outside the realm of the corpse god?
This army is incredible, there's really not much I'd change about it even if I had the skill to do so. Great work.
49604
Post by: Skits
@Chrysis: Hehehe, I get this comment a lot. Pre-Heresy, the Emperor's Children were the only legion who were all allowed to wear the Aquila. However, it was occasionally also awarded to noted heroes of other legions as well, heh. And as the bloke on the Forgeworld Facebook page said in regards to Rashidi when I posted him there: "He looks like a noted hero to me!"
@BunkerBob: Yeah, I like to believe that Ahriman at least is still loyal, and looking for that one answer... whether or not he actually ever finds it, who knows. As for my own army, they're also still loyal! Even if they are wearing the post-heresy colours and still have Rubricae... ¬_¬
@DemetriDominov: Thank you very much!
31285
Post by: Chrysis
Ah, I was unaware of there being background that indicated it was also treated as something akin to a medal. Although in retrospect it makes sense given it was a huge honour for an entire legion to be allowed to wear it. And I'd agree, if he qualified for a Contemptor he almost certainly qualified for a medal as well.
I've been meaning to start some Heresy-era Thousand Sons as well, so I've been keeping an eye on the thread. Haven't got any further than buying a set of Mk2 Assault Marines and a Special Weapons clampack. Maybe I'll actually start soon, although the Assault Marines need a lot of cleaning, especially in the jump pack intakes and exhausts.

Chrysis wrote:Nice painting, but unless I'm mistaken weren't the Emperor's Children the only ones allowed to wear the Aquilla pre-heresy?
You're somewhat mistaken.
Pre-Heresy, the Emperor's Children were the only Space Marine Legion allowed to wear it as a whole, en masse as it were.
Other Space Marine Legions were allowed to award it use for exceptional acts of bravery and such.
On top of that, I think the Imperial Army used it wherever and whenever it wanted...
EDIT:
Ninja'd by many, days in advance!
49604
Post by: Skits
@Chrysis: No worries! And you should totally start a Heresy-era Sons army, there needs to be more of us. I've got a couple of sets of MkIV tacticals and a set of MkV assault jumpers that I need to customise up and paint at some stage - so many projects, so little time, heh. Do you watch my WIP thread as well? Might give you some more ideas.
Will be interesting to see what you do with your guys!
@Alpharius: Muahaha, too slow!
31285
Post by: Chrysis
It's probably going to be a while before the Heresy marines get any work done. Some of the Jump Packs have the exhausts/intakes pretty badly cast, so I have to try and chip blobs of resin out without wrecking the fans. And with the new Chaos codex on the horizon and Forgeworld actually putting out Heresy era books there's a feeling that I should wait and see how things turn out before committing.
I've got an Ahriman to put together and paint for my modern Sons army, so he'll probably be the next related project.
The other difficulty is that I get all motivated while I'm at work, but when I get home it all vanishes in the face of having to cook dinner and do housework.
49604
Post by: Skits
If you got 'em from Forgeworld, maybe give 'em a call and see if you can get replacements? Forgeworld are usually pretty good with that. But yeah, I definitely hear you on the new Chaos 'dex and the Heresy 'dexes thing. I'm also waiting to see how those turn out, hehe. I've been putting off converting up a box of Grey Knight terminators for my pre-heresy boys for months just so I can see what sort of weapons Termis will get in the new Chaos 'dex - and now the Heresy 'dex as well, heh. I get the feeling those poor termis won't get touched for a good long time.
Ahriman's a very nice model! But I definitely recommend pinning his staff hand to his arm - the number of times my Ahriman model's had his staff hand come off his arm... including at Games Day last year for my Armies on Parade board then. D: Hooray for staff with emergency superglue!
Also totally sympathise with the motivation thing. Right now, I'm in that "I've just finished a project, and have no idea what to start working on next" phase, agh. So many projects, so little time!
31285
Post by: Chrysis
It's been so long since I ordered them that I wouldn't feel entirely right going and asking for replacements. I gave them a quick once over when I got them, but didn't even get around to washing mold release off for several months at which point I actually gave them a closer look. It's then been another several months, so we're probably looking at close to half a year. I can make them work, I just need to get around to it.
Ahriman has his staff pinned, and his head for good measure. Although the head may have actually made things worse, as I'm not terribly good at getting those things lined up properly. Arm is lined up fine though. Summer is winding up, so it's starting to be more tolerable temperatures and it should be easier to get motivated to do some work.

Not Thousand Sons, alas, but I figured I'd post this guy here anyway since I've been too busy lately to work on my Sons. :(
So here, have a Dark Vengeance Chaplain for now! I'm quite pleased with how he turned out, especially the blending on the green and white on the cloak. Also used a wet palette for the first time on the smoke.
This guy belongs to a friend, I asked to paint him 'cause I think it's a nifty model, he agreed, and gave me the Chaos Lord from the DV set in return. Win!

Great work. The reds are really rich while the white is very crisp. Love them.

@bubber: Thank you very much! The red takes a lot of layers to get looking like that, and white's just painful to paint no matter what, so it's good to know it's all worth the effort!
Finally got my scouts and sniper scouts finished as well, along with my Scout Master Jabari.
Scout Bolter squad, led by Jabari.
Scout Sniper squad.
I'm really pleased with how the faces and hair turned out for these guys, especially since I haven't painted hair/skin before these models! Quite a learning experience, heh.
Since Jabari's an Athenaean discipline psyker in my army fluff, he got a Grey Knights librarian head. And since he's the scout master, I gave him a spare sniper rifle slung over his back, and replaced the regular scouts knife blade with a Grey Knights power sword blade. I sculpted the bandoleer across his chest from greenstuff, and stuck some spare grenades and bits on it. Pretty pleased with how he turned out!
And from this angle, his power sword looks like a lightsabre.
As always, comments and feedback are very welcome!

What color paints do you use for the dusky skintone? Like for the sniper aiming his gun upward, as an example. I am terrible judging skintone paints for non-caucasian people and am really interested in making my other armies more ethnically diverse.
This stuff is all really great.

@SRSFACE: Thank you! As far as I remember, those somewhat darker guys I started off with a base of Doombull Brown, followed by Bestial Brown, then Ratskin Flesh, then a wash of Gryphone Sepia (or Seraphim Sepia, whatever they're calling it these days) to bring out the recesses. Then I carefully highlighted the raised areas with a bit more Ratskin Flesh.
I've still got some more scouts for my Landspeeder Storm that I need to finish painting - would you be interested in me doing a step by step for them, for different skin tones?

No worries, I'll try to get that done relatively soon for you! I'll post it as a tutorial in the Painting & Modelling Tutorials forum, and I'll also mention it in my WIP Blog thread!

Really good job on all your stuff mate and the black background looks better too.

@Madmatt: Thank you! I'm still trying to figure out the best way to photograph these guys, especially since red's such a difficult colour to photograph in the first place, ugh. Good to know that the black bg is working!

Great stuff, I bet you're looking forward to getting your hands on that Propsero box and that Daemon Primarch Magnus.

@WrentheFaceless: Thank you! And yeah, definitely looking forward to the Prospero box! Magnus though, I'm still not entirely sold on. I HATE those damn chest horns so much, and I've honestly never been much of a fan of Magnus to start with. His Legion, yes, Magnus himself, not really. XD
Still, one of my friends at least is planning on getting him and I may get to paint his Magnus, so yay!

Looks great. That cloak is quite eye-catching!

@bubber: Thank you! And yeah, I get comments about the base rims a lot. XD Personal taste! I'm planning on doing a snow/ice board at some point, and I want the bases to blend in with the board once I make it. So I'm leaving the rims as they are for now. Maybe once I've done the board and seen how they look on it, I'll try clean white rims or something! Definitely not black rims though, that'd stand out way too much, imo.
@Yoyoyo: Thank you! I'm really pleased with how the cloak turned out!

How'd you do it? The cloak I mean.

Skits wrote:@CREEEEEEEEED: The cloak is a black base, then I dappled thin coats of darker blue/purple/green on to form the general areas of the nebulae. Then dappled thin coats of mid blue/purple/green over the previous darker colours, covering a little less area, then repeated again with brighter blue/purple/green. Then dotted on the white stars and gave a few of the larger ones shine-lines with a fine-tipped brush. I'm planning on doing a step by step of the process soon, so keep an eye on my WiP thread!
Thanks, and I'll definitely keep a look out for it. Very nice SW.

Thank you all for the lovely comments!
Anyway, here I am again - not with a Thousand Son this time, alas, but hopefully Canoness Veridyan is awesome enough to make up for it. I couldn't stand her painful foot-binding-like high heeled boots, so I did some careful amputation and re-sculpting, and also adjusted her right leg at the hip to something a little more comfortable looking. I also experimented with a new method of painting NMM gold, and I'm pretty pleased with the results.
For the rest of her pics, check out her photo album!
Let me know what you think!

I'm finally back again with another completed Thousand Son - this time it's a converted Collector's Edition space marine terminator captain, with a custom-made khopesh and book, both made from plasticard. I'm pretty pleased with how the freehand on his pauldrons and cloak came out!
More pics in Nadim's gallery album.

@Niatona: Ahh thank you! I like to think his personality would be as charming as his appearance.
@CREEEEEEEEED: Aw thank you! I don't think I'm quite GD level yet, but I'm working on it! One day maybe... XD
@darkstar6783: Thank you! I should have another model finished in the next couple of weeks, if life cooperates. And it's great to find someone else who loves the 30k Thousand Sons! Best legion.
