I'm going to be remodeling a Great Gargant that I built years ago. (Kinda like converting your own scratch-build.) I made the original model for the VDR rules when they first came out, and now I have a few good excuses to bring this behemoth into Apocalypse.
The first is my terrain thread. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/391965.page
The Gargant will live most of the time as terrain, getting built and destroyed over and over again in his factory.
The second reason is this thread wherein I pledged to have it done by next summer. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/381018.page
Way back in the day, White Dwarf put out a series of rules called VDR, or Vehicle Design Rules. it allowed you to make pretty much anything, I fully believe it was the precursor to Apocalypse. I built this thing for that purpose, and he has seen a decent ammount of play over the years, even an Apocalypse game! He's showing his age though, so I wanted to tear him down and rebuild him, make him stronger. (hopefully you hear the bionic man jumping noise in your head right now.)
As if all that wasn't enough, I want the Gargant to have removable plates and weapons, so he can either be terrain or actually get used in Apocalypse games. I got some good ideas on how to do that, I ain't scared.
When I had to move down here to Louisiana, I chucked all my unfinished models into a giant box. basically, I used tanks as packing peanuts for the huge lug.
The Great Gargant is pretty big. his feet are the size of Land Raiders. here he is with a Baneblade for scale, and my barry can be seen sitting in the barrel of the main belly gun.
Welp, thats enough of memory lane! I ripped him apart. I started with pulling off his head, tearing off his titan-killing chainsword, and pulling his gun-arm off.
Next I ripped his shoulders off, and marveled at how I used to build stuff. The base is a three gallon bucket of water, with two lengths of PVC running from the shoulders to the feet for support.
The shoulders were made of a paper towel holder, thick sheets of plastic from an old typewriter, and twine that was superglued and hotglued. I used Magic sculpt for the first time on this model, I caked it onto the shoulders to reinforce the arm joints. I couldn't afford a lot of plastic back in the day, the framework is thick MDF!
Next I removed the engine. It looks like the engine was the gubbins from an old salad shooter, with the engine housing comprised of awesome Necromunda bulkheads. The main smokestack base was the salad shooter hopper and some PVC.
Here's the body with the engine plate removed.
Next, I took a cutting wheel to the main body, and started shearing off chunks. It turns out hot glue doesn't hold up after seven years, armor bits and plates went flying.
At last, it was fully dismantled.
I started rebuilding with the main body. I normally start at the bottom and build up, but I have new ideas for his shoes and I need to make sure he is centered and balanced onto the new shoe positions. this meant I had to have his bulk built.
Here is the old, hollowed out bucket.
I added all manner of crazy scaffolding to the inside. at any point this could be visible, so I need to build it and paint it in layers. here's the first layer.
I added a can of tomato paste and some basic details to make the cannons look like cannons from the back. I dont plan on having much visible when I'm done, so I didn't make it too detailed.
I then added a few more surface details, sculpted some clay to the edges, and then primed it. It will still need skirt plates, I'll add them once his feet are mounted.
Up next, More scaffolding! Followed by heavy plates to skin the scaffolding!
As in any of my threads, any and all thoughts/praises/critiques/insults/questions and commnets are appreciated and welcome!

Oh yes, we can make better. now with removable plates and battle damage! I may even go nuts and give him kung-fu grip in his power claw hand. The biggest upgrade in my opinion will be the paint job, I swear back then I just wanted to build build build, then throw paint on as an afterthought.

Thanks again! I am really having fun working on this, I forgot how much fun these bigger models are to work with.

UPDATE TIME!!!
I've not been playing Dead Island so I can work on this thing, I'm really trucking along. (but not in Dead Island, I think I'm a zombie by now.)
Anywho, I got the base rust color done on the bottom of the Great Gargant. I will be adding more paint to the outside of the hull, but the inside is pretty much the final layer.
So I can build the infrastructure proppa, I detailed out and primed the outer plates. The only one I didnt do was the back engine plate, but I want to build it permanently into the hull so I'll be working on it as I build tomorrow.
here's two of the plates before I touched up the gubbins and sculpted the edges.
and all of them completed and primed.
Here is whats next. I have to build up the base scaffolding to be able to hang the plates in the right position. all the plates have basic detail on the back, and small eye bolts. the base structure will have hooks mounted into it that the eye bolts can hang from. That way I can take the plates off and use them as terrain, or mount them all and take out three thousand points of Ork death.
I'm also mostly done with his stompin' feet, I'll include them in the next update.

Well, the gargant is looking amazing! I didn't realize you were making the interior of a functioning idol of Gork... or is it Mork? That is very exciting. I take it all of the removable plates will count as structure points / wounds for the contraption?
The updates and new additions to your army and collection are chalk full of WIN!

I love how you asked if the plates were for structure points, and then everyone else drew the same conclusion! I'll go with that, I was originally going to just make the interior so I could have it being built for my terrain project! However, the spectators have spoken, and if I count the two shoulder plates and the head/field generators, I will have all nine structure points represented! (or some other appropriate bit, I'll see as I progress.)
But yes, it is a fully functional idol of Mork. (or possibly Gork.)
mullet_steve wrote:Ohhh the idea of removable plates for each structure point is a fantastic one I might have to steal that idea... Infact consider it Yoinked!
Loot away, thats why I make these threads. On that note, I really skip a lot of steps while posting these days, if anyone wants or needs more detailed steps, just let me know.
bigfish wrote:Looking very very good so far on this one, also the structure points idea is very clever indeed.
Thanks! and yes, the structure point idea was fully mine, I take full credit! (I guess I'm a deathskull poster today!)
AAAAAAAND UPDATE TIME!
I built the interior. It's only the functional build, once I have everything needed structurally, I'll then go back through and add proppa "lived in" details.
In no particular order, here's all the plates mounted. Turns out this was trickier than I thought, it took about ten hours just to build the interior where I could mount the plates.
Once I got that all sorted out, I painted the interior so I could start the next step today.
Up next is the back plate, which will include the engine and force field projectas. The next few updates will be exciting, as I realized I made a grave build mistake, and will have to do something radical to overcome it! oh, and boots too!

(the actual error has been corrected, see below and thanks fer yer awesome post!)
The Good Green wrote:pox wrote: oh, and boots too!

I can't wait.
I got some serious kicks for this dude, this is gonna be a HUGE update!
Today, we start with the huge error. what happened was I've been doing this a piece at a time, blissfully ignorant about how it will come together. What my error was is if all the Armor plates are removable, what the hell is going to support the shoulders? I figured out to just extend the scaffolding and dropped two heavy PVC pipes through the whole mess, but I have to build more stuff to cover the joints.
I am really good at planning out builds, but sometimes I like to make it all willy-nilly. You know you have worked too many hours in a row when you start thinking "well, how the hell would a Mek fix this?" You know you have worked too many days in a row when that works.
In order to drop the pipes through all the mess of plastic without sacrificing strength, I used these awesome new industrial Dremel cutting blades. these guys are super rippy, tearing through .080 plastic like it was a fat guy at a crawfish boil.
Once the pipes were dropped, I reinforced with more plastic.
I then added a half circle atop that the head and shield generators will sit. I'll have an armored gorget hanging down over the joint that will be removable. (I need nine removable plates for the nine structure points anyways.)
Once I had that all in place, I could add the final inside detail and paint it. it still needs a touch of rust, but It wont take any time to knock that out.
And now, boots!
Here were the old stompas, pretty boring.
I bought a few electrical boxes, and slapped them together.
Much improved, but they lacked style, and I thought they would be too small. I built some side and back pieces.
I remembered the awesome curled boots that the robots had in "Casshern," so I remade them for my Great Gargant. (you can see the boots on this video at about the fifteen second mark.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i--UUeGTMvo&feature=related
I think the boots are too big now with everything on them, they just look awkward on the Gargant so I'll probably just use the basic boot.
Heres a shot with everything
and a shot with just the basics.
I think the stripped-down version looks plenty big, so I'll probably go with that. I'll use the other boot-pieces to build the shield generators or something.
Up next, the back engine! also, are my updates too big?

Gargant is looking great! I'm not convinced with the upturned clogs, but I like the "full Monte" shoes! the bigger the better. but you do what you feel is right, I'll hold off until see the results.

Nice update. I have to say, though, I like the bigger boots. With just the tows, they look like cowboy boots... which could be super funny if you could work that in as a theme, but I think the stabilizers on the feet could be very important.

Clogs rule! I'll hold off on deciding the shoes until the rest of the model is built, but I have a feeling its just gonna be the basic shoe. If I do go with the plain one I'll make something to go off the sides and back for looks, its just the pieces I have now fill the entire bottom of the bucket. I'll get a picture next update so you can see what I mean.
And if you thought the cat eating the head was good, wait until you see the fatal wounds from the chainsword!

Like I said above, maybe I just need smaller stabalizers. the ones on him are HUGE, but then again I'm not done with the whole thing, the arms and engine may add a ton of bulk.
UPDATE TIME!
I'm gonna try to update more often, but with smaller updates. I think they will be easier to write, and be less of a novel for y'all to read.
I got the first layer of the engine built and primed. I have to paint this and then I can add the next layer of gubbins.
I also decided I had enough metal rounds from the belly gun, so in keeping with tradition I'm gonna go lifta-droppa on the gun arm.
Here's the bare bones beginning.
I know it doesn't look like much now, but trust me I can make an energy gun look cool. I have about ten thousand points of scaven painted, and most of my Skryre war machines are scratch built. I got this, yo.
As usual, fire away with rabid insults, advice, and stuff.

Gah, it's actually carefully placed wire and hard plastic tubing. I wish I had just used a telephone cord, haha. Lifta-droppa phase two is completed!
UPDATE!
Well, like most things I do, this is quickly spiraling out of control. I will prolly be using the big feet attatchments, this thing is getting huge.
Lifta-Droppa is up first though.
The 3/4 rings will be painted to be looted Chaos gates for extra Zzap in my Lifta-droppa cannon.
Here it is primed. I still have one more layer of wires and tubing, along with rivets.
I also got the back engines mounted, and by Gork they stick out further than I was expecting.
Lastly, a quick shot of the gun mounted. It looks a bit weedy because theres no gubbins, shoulderpads, or armor plates on the arm, and the back of the Lifta-droppa is still missing. I'll need to address that though, as it needs to look good with a lot of that stuff stripped off.
Well, thats it for today!

I agree, and changed it. At first I was gonna go huge shoulder pads and have longer arms to give it a more dynamic look, but after taking another look, I decided to go with the Snakebites adage "The old ways are the best." It looks classic so far, changing too many things will make it look wonky. I'll save new designs for later projects. (keepin' the clogs though!)

I took a hard look at it, and I agree with you. I made a lot of changes for the next layer of detail, see pictures below. I also dropped the broken chaos gate idea. I have ideas for looted Daemon engines, but this isn't the right model to do it. I re-looked at both old and new Ork energy weapons, and made some changes to bring it more in line.
RSJake wrote:It's looking great! I really like the lifta/droppa! The idea of the chaos gates is cool! And the engine is just WOW!
I'm glad you like it all! I did change the lifta-droppa, take a look below.
UPDATE TIME!
I made a number of changes, all on my own with no exterior imput, because I'm a genius. <----(pictures these ideas mysteriously painted blue.)
First up I ran out and bought new couplings for the arm joints. One of the reasons I wanted longer arms was so the titan chain fist could actually hit Baneblades and Brass scorpions on the ground! What I decided was to compromise, I'll add a traditional slug thrower arm, and add the chain fist below as a weapon attatchment. it matches older artwork, adds a gun, and will look great.
lifta-droppa arm.
Follwed by a quick mock-up of how the left arm will look.
I also took another stab at the lifta-droppa design. I dropped the Chaos gate idea, and instead added some Ork teeth in the style of the new Forgeworld lifta-droppa design.
I also added more gun casing, and I will have two more swiss-cheese style sound bafflers to glue over the energy cannon part once this part dries.
Thats it for today, next up is the final touches on the lifta-droppa, and the start of the left arm.

Thats really big! Like Mega-Gargant big, you should just make one of those!
UPDATE!
I got most of the left arm done.
First, I mounted the underlsung chainsaw.
Next, I raided every tube I had and started making guns.
Then I started adding guns to the arm. don't mind the one thats up at an angle, I was originally going to have it and another to give a fan effect of barrels, but it wound up not looking right.
I kept adding guns and details.
Lastly, I dropped the Paris gun that was sticking up to just a vertical cannon, and called it a day. The arm still needs a few more details and missles, but its mostly done.
Inside
Outside
Back to the Lifta-droppa, I added more detail to the back. this arm is now also mostly done. (it needs a ton of wires.)
Lastly, I decided on the final mount for the arms and glued the mounting into place onto the body. I also added a neck. To keep the arms removable, I added brass pins to the mix. I'll eventually add braces and grips to the pins, so they dont look silly, and for ease of removal/mounting.
Up next, the head!

I like the lifta-droppa for sure now. I'm not sure what you're looking for on the rod measurements, they range in length from two to six inches, and there's about ten different gauges of plastic and five different gauges of brass and metal. which gun specifically do you need to mesurements for?

You should grab some photos and start a thread!
UPDATE TIME!
I got his noggin' rockin'.
First, I rescued what the cat hadn't eaten of the old head, and added a neck.
Next, I cut the face off so I could put gubbins in it, and added some lower teeth.
Next, I made some nose holes from plastic, started sculpting the eye socket, added an old Rhino on top, and the begginings of gubbins.
I now had enough stuff on him to size out the jaw, so I made that.
The jaw is gonna remain posable.
Lastly, here is the head mounted on the body. I also added a bit more plastic for shaping.
The head is only about 25% done, all I have at this point is the roughed out shape. I'm gonna keep puttin' clay on the head while I start on the removable void shields.

For sure, see todays update! I will be making them as observation decks. I had a giant rocket and a giant Zzap gun when I first made it, but it was too much on the model. I just want to be able to throw a ton of Boyz up there, so it's just gonna be a guard rail or wall, and some bolt on big shootas for the shoulders. (By the way, I still have the original shoulder weapons, at some point in the futre I'll be making a Sooper cannon and a Pulsa rokkit with them.)
RSJake wrote:Oh man! This looking great! Love the use of the rhino!
I really love the old rhino, because of the way it was designed you can make a million uses of them. I don't mean to go all gray beard here, but you also used to get three in a box for twenty bucks! (or two land raiders for the same, haha.)

It would be too much work to put working lights on him, maybe on another model. As far as camera quality goes, you just need good lighting and a proppa background, that's most of the work. even crappy cameras can take good pictures, especially on giant pieces like terrain and Titans.
UPDATE TIME!!!!!
I decided to go with an eyepatch for my Gargant's head. Here's the first layer of brain-casing.
I went with the classic Bale-eye for his other socket. Here is just the basic frame.
Here's the eyeball, mostly done. I also added some frankenstein bolts for the jaw.
Here's the first layer of detail for the other side of his head. the brain will remain exposed, covered in WWII bomber-style frame and glass.
Here's a shot of the first stage of the glass framework.
I'll need to paint and clearcoat all the detail before I can add the glass panes and the last layer of clay. The next step on the head then is to finish the jaw, enclose the bottom cab, and prime.
While that was drying, I shored up the gaps between the engine and the hull.
Lastly, I added a honey comb structure to start the shoulders, followed by the shoulder base.
Gettin' close! Next up will be the painted head, and more shoulder detail!

Thanks! I use both plastruct and evergreen, the standard tube diameter I use is 2, 2.4, 3, 3.2, and 3.6 milimeter. basically, go to a train store and see what tubes fit snuggly into the other tubes. if you need really big guns, just use larger gauges. Metal tubes work better for smaller guns, as the thickness of the tube walls is thinner.

There's two issues with having the hatch open. The first is an asthetic issue. I want it to look like an eye patch, that's why there's a tube going around the head. If the eye is open, it's not as obvious. The second issue is pure laziness. if I have the hatch open and a Grot/Ork sticking out, I would need to both paint that model and also detail out everything that could be seen on the inside. Due to the fact I would like to get this done, I'm picking and choosing my extra-detail battles.
Those lazer cut drawings and Warmill castings are crazy. makes me wish I new CAD. (I assume thats the program you/they use?)
UPDATE TIME!!!!!!!!!
I got the head built and primed, WOO-HOO!!!!
Here's the teeth.
Once all his chopers were in place, I added a bit more clay and riveted the entire thing. I don't know why I thought riveting was gonna go quickly, the stupid head is bigger than a Landraider. I wanted to get it primed though, so I burnt the midnight oil and knocked it out.
Once it gets painted, I can add the glass and ribbing over the brain casing. Thanks for looking!

The only criticism I would be able to give to the previous gargant was its paintjob being too plain, lacking any kind of highlights and shading, which is something to be expected of such an old job. As soon as I saw it primed again, I noticed the detailing had a lot of hidden potential behind that paintjob.
But I was not ready for that modeling work wich turned a standard-gargant (which has always been an underwhelming model for me) into an impressive model.
That head is amazing, and that's the way ork titans should look like. Fearsome, and not fatty and blocky.

I thank you for the compliments, I'm just not sure if you realize how confrontational your post is. You do realize you one-upped my Great Gargant by saying "mine is bigger," right?
RSJake wrote:Wow! Loving the head! It looks really wicked! I was kind of sceptical on the clay you used. But primered it looks like twisted metal! great job!
I love my clay! I actually did rush it too quickly though, I have a bit of fingerprinting on it that I'll need to paint over.

mullet_steve wrote:Yeah I understand on the picking and choosing your detail battles. Love the brain case area and those teeth! I am using a very old version of autocad for the drawings.
Maybe one day I'll look into drawing up plans in CAD on an analog thereof. I actually draw up very detailed plans, depending on the project I'm building for. With Orks I tend to be a tad more lax, but with some of the more complicated scratch builds I've drawn up full blueprints complete with paper 3-D models before starting on the styrene, so I think I would only really need to learn the software.
As for detail battles, I'll put in the time if it's going to pay off. Like having the head as the ceterpiece it obviously needs extra detail work, however if I'm not sure an added feature is going to work out or it doesn't look good in sketches, I drop it. Case in point I had worked up plans to give the Gargant an iron gob, but the foamcore mock-up didn't quite look right, so I scrapped it. I'm sure with enough time I could make it work, but just scrapping the idea was more viable due to time.
Tortured-Robot wrote:The head is amazing, that thing is huge!

I really appreciate your comments, they mean a lot. Back when I made this, (eight or so years ago) all I wanted to do was scale up Epic models. I had a ton of them, and still do. getting the details perfect was what I strived for, I really enjoyed a job well done of an up-scale recreation. hell, I even learned to sculpt doing the same thing with Inquisitor models, I made everything from a Graynight Terminator to Fabious Bile.
Once Forgeworld and Apocalypse came out though, I was entranced by their re-interpitations of the classic Epic vehicles. When I started redoing a lot of my older models, I wanted to incoperate that spirt, basically asking myself what could and should be different, whilst still keeping an eye on what details made a model "Iconic." For me, it's designing these new elements, while keeping the spirt of the model intact that is really the most fun. I like for players to see my models and instantly know what race and class of vehicle it is, while at the same time enjoying (hopefully) what I changed to make it my own.
And yeah, I could not paint to save my life back then. I had a little skill, but mostly I wanted it painted and done. Luckily, playing Fantasy gave me an equal enjoyment from painting, so I no longer dread any part of the model making process. (except rivets.)
UPDATE TIME!
ok, I really rambled on there, sorry for that. I started on the shoulders.
First up, I slapped down some plastic in the rough shape.
I realized that I could not have completed shoulders sitting on scaffolding when this was terrain, so I figured out a way to muck it up. I started with adding wireform supports over the entire shoulders, made from .080 strips of both square and round plastic.
Next, I took the handy Dremel and cut out a lot of the sections.
This would allow me to add detail both above and below the should structure.
Something about the shoulders was bugging me, I realized the front tabs are supposed to bend in, so I cut and re-glued.
Much better!
Next, I looked at a few designs I had planned for above the shoulders, but I didn't like any of them. I knew from the previous build that I didn't want huge shoulder cannons or grabba klaws, and I wanted space for models to sit atop. I looked into both castles with guns, and landing/launch pads for Stormboyz and Deffcoptas, but none of my foam mock-ups looked right.
I also tried leaving it open with just a retaining wall and bolt on big shootas, but again it looked wrong, too much open space and the head stuck out too much.
I looked back at other Great Gargants through the years, and of course consulted Kr00zers beloved graph. I decided I really liked the shoulder cannons, and specifically the way they looked in Kr00zers size chart. It would still leave a small space for models to ride atop, and add some AA support to the beast.
I looked at both real world turret designs and naval Destroyer deck guns for inspiration. Eventally I set upon a design that gave me everything I needed.
Here's the Turrets in build order.
The Shell tossers are slightly elevated, it will make em' look cool, plus show off their (ineffective) AA mounts!
The clay on the last pic s very rough, it still needs a few more layers to look proppa. Saddly, I only have one at the clay stage, the other still needs a ton of work.
I spent a lot of time on design, but I'm really happy with the results. The cannons add some good detail, but still have a very slim profile on his back. They dont go above his head, so once I add the right ammount of armor to the shoulders it should look good and proppa.

I've been thinking a lot about your post and others like it, and I think you're right. I've already added so much work into making it work both as terrain and as a playable piece, I really should expand my original scope a bit to really go the extra mile. Aww, thanks dude! I wasn't offended, I just figured I'd both point out your post was a bit strong, and make a joke at the same time. For sure link me when you do get your thread rolling.
Taking pictures is just about lighting, and having a somewhat solid color for the background. (It doesn't have to be white, just a good neutral color. try setting up next to a wall.) Get the camera as close as you can while still having it remain in focus. Also, look for a little flower icon and make sure its on. Even most camera phones have a macro setting nowadays. Finally, set the camera on something so it doesnt wobble while snapping the picture. If you can tell me what brand and model of camera you have, I can tell you how to squeeze all the juice out of it that you can.

UPDATE TIME!
First up, I built mounts for the turrets. here they are clay-mounted to the structure.
Next, I cut some very thick sheet styrene for the shoulder armor base.
I mean, seriously thick. like, 1/4 inch thick. As in, I had to break out my high speed plastic cutting wheel. (And broke one of my Dremels in the process! I needed to learn how to use the thick sheets for work anyhow, the lesson cost me sixty bucks damn it!)
I then checked to be sure everything fit together proppa.
Next, I started adding detail to the armored plates.
I gotta wait for the clay to dry before I can put the final details on (ugh, rivets) but here they are mosty done.
And with cannons!
Up next is the front armor plates.

Thanks! I'll be keeping that same muted color palette. I'll probably paint something cool over the main hull, but for the most part I just want a simple rust job with glyphs, checkers, and dags here and there. Very similar to my terrain, actually.

dsteingass wrote:Are the shoulder mounts PVC pipe? Or have you found a source of Styrene tube that size and are deliberately holding out on telling me where such marvels exist to be ordered? lol
Alas, it is just PVC. I have found a company that makes styrene tubes in larger gauges but they dont make them in any size smaller than eight feet long, making shipping too much. what I will recommend is make sure the hardware store you're shopping at has several grades of PVC, along with cold pipe PVC. you can also find fun tubing in the electrical section.

Aslo, was there a specific reason to use such thick sheets? Wouln't foam core be lighter? Just curious.
Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I had two good reason for using such thick card. The first has to do with the model. I needed the bases strong enough to stand on their own, they will remain removable as structure point damage and I didn't want them to warp or break during regular usage.
The other reason has to do with my job, a small part of my work is making movie props. Actors are notorious for breaking stuff, and for my next gig I need to make some strange handguns and rifles. I had the idea of using PVC and thick styrene as the base, so the guns are basically unbreakable. (I dont work on the kind of movies that have the budget to make duplicates of everything, haha.) I wanted to experiment with thick sheets without the time deadline floating over my head. To that end I call it a sucess. Even though I lost a Dremel, I replaced it with a fine multi-tool. I'll be trying it out on the thick plastic tomorrow when I build the front shoulder plates. if it doesn't work, I'll upgrade to a Zip-Saw.
Enough chewing the fat, it's UPDATE TIME!
I got both the shoulders and the guns riveted and primed. I just want to take a moment to exclaim how much I hate rivets. my hands are now warped into strange claws, I'm typing with my pinkies. I hate rivets. I mean, if you don't put them on, Ork stuff doesn't look right, and that's the first thing people howl.
"Why don't you have rivets?"
"I like you build, but it needs more rivets."
"you know what you should do? you should put rivets on your rivets so you can rivet while you rivet."
Thats all facinating, but really now. Orks have ENTIRE UNITS ARMED WITH BLOW TORCHES AND ARC WELDERS! really? in the dark future no one can just weld and call it a day?!?
Anyway, hers some cannons with rivets.
Followed by some shoulder armor with rivets.
Left shoulder.
Right shoulder.
Both shoulders with cannons!
Lastly, some mock-up pictures of the assembled model. (he slipped off his boots mid-picture taking, serves me right for taking pictures on a drafting table that's at an angle. only one damaged armor plate!)
Bonus infantry view!
Next up is making the last shoulder plates. After thats its going to be a matter of going over every part of the model and doing final touches. Like I said in my last update, I got a lot of neat stuff to cram into his different pieces and parts, so it should'nt be too boring!
I'm going to end this post with a general "where I'm at" update. The boy has really taken a shine to painting, he is really spending the time needed to improve his skill. To that end, he has asked for more painting lessons, I responded by assembling two units of Nobs and a few Warbosses. I'll be painting with him throughout his Christmas break, so updates may slow a bit on the Great Gargant. I'll only be painting Nobs when he wants to paint, other than that I'll be working on the Gargant so there will still be updates in this thread.
One last bit O' buisness. With all the stuff I got for his insides, I constantly come back to the HUGE center belly gun. I have rounds to fit all his other guns, but the center gun is just comically giant. I've been thinking of converting it into an assult ramp, and avoiding the "gun" entirely. the other option is to fill it with scatter-shot, and make it look like a blunderbus. this would entail it looking like a one-shot weapon filled with various battlefield junk. any thoughts? I just dont want to leave the center tube as a "cannon."

There's a little tutorial here on how to make some really convincing welds, about half way down the page> http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/379581.page Sorry if it's a bit late but it might be worth thinking about!
As for the belly gun, you're right, it's huge. Any shell for it would fill up a massive amount of space inside. Both ideas you've put forward make sense. Maybe you could combine the two? Firstly, it's a huge blunderbuss firing spanners, scrap, grots, rivets etc, and then after that one shot, they open the breach and a load of boyz pile out.
Ooh or what about that old night goblin catapult which fires gobboz with wings at people, maybe a 40k version of that in the belly gun? If all else fails, just remember that they're orks, it doesn't have to make sense! The red wunz go fasta and if we sayz itz gonna fire then itz gonna fire by Gork (or Mork)!!

I like the "Ork-a-pult" idea, you could fire 10 Orks at a time, to say a distance of, what 36"? Then roll a d10 to see how many live. You would have to roll for scatter of course, that a given, right?
Or, the Boarding Ramp could also work. surround the barrel with some sort of melta-type guns, that can spin around the barrel. That is your "breaching drill", then hoards of Orks pour through the breached opening!
And of course the Giant Grotzooka sounds good too.
But back to the Mocked-up Piture. That looks so awesome! I mean, just super cool!

I could also do a "Kan Kannon," and have it fire special bullet shaped Kans or Deff dreads.
I'd just make the models cone shaped, and build in retractable guns/arms/legs/bosspoles.
I wont decide till I get the feet mounted, I'm worried about the clearance for an assult ramp if I go that route, it wont work if there's eight inches of drop out the door!

Thats what dangerous terrain tests are for. or you could make it every model takes a strenth 5 ap nothing hit and vehicles could be stunned on a roll of 1 and imobilised on a 6? maybe
would be a fun rule

You could stuff a huge bob-omb style deal in there and say it rolls out of the belly gun and bounces across the field smashing everything in it's path until it explodes, or stops rolling. Then all da boyz come rampaging out of the belly gun through a hatch in the back pf the barrel, like MoA was saying.
Although, the idea did pop into my head of all the grots dragging huge chunks of busted tank and plane and trukk and building and-and-and... and then having it just spew out all over the place... once.

pox wrote:
Thats all facinating, but really now. Orks have ENTIRE UNITS ARMED WITH BLOW TORCHES AND ARC WELDERS! really? in the dark future no one can just weld and call it a day?!?
I got the last of the stuff I need for his guts, so I should get around to that soon. As to the rivet situation, it's not the skill needed to sculpt weld lines, even if you made an entire model that was clearly welded, peeps would ask for rivets. (to be honest, I like the way they look, I just hate doing them. one of the few things that really gets me.)
And I got the Belly gun sorted out, see below.
RSJake wrote:I like the "Ork-a-pult" idea, you could fire 10 Orks at a time, to say a distance of, what 36"? Then roll a d10 to see how many live. You would have to roll for scatter of course, that a given, right?
Or, the Boarding Ramp could also work. surround the barrel with some sort of melta-type guns, that can spin around the barrel. That is your "breaching drill", then hoards of Orks pour through the breached opening!
And of course the Giant Grotzooka sounds good too.
But back to the Mocked-up Piture. That looks so awesome! I mean, just super cool!
I'm glad you like the mock-up, I cant wait till its just done! again, see below for round one of the belly gun.
master of asgard wrote:pox wrote:I could also do a "Kan Kannon," and have it fire special bullet shaped Kans or Deff dreads.
Now youz finkin' like a ork!
It's sad, but I do stop and ask myself what a Mek would do from time to time when I'm stuck.
bigfish wrote:pox wrote: I wont decide till I get the feet mounted, I'm worried about the clearance for an assult ramp if I go that route, it wont work if there's eight inches of drop out the door!
Thats what dangerous terrain tests are for. or you could make it every model takes a strenth 5 ap nothing hit and vehicles could be stunned on a roll of 1 and imobilised on a 6? maybe
would be a fun rule
again, I sorted it out, but the thing I made is removable, so I will keep dangerous terrain ideas in mind for when I eventually make different options for the main gun.
The Good Green wrote:You could stuff a huge bob-omb style deal in there and say it rolls out of the belly gun and bounces across the field smashing everything in it's path until it explodes, or stops rolling. Then all da boyz come rampaging out of the belly gun through a hatch in the back pf the barrel, like MoA was saying.
Although, the idea did pop into my head of all the grots dragging huge chunks of busted tank and plane and trukk and building and-and-and... and then having it just spew out all over the place... once.
I really wanted the blunderbuss idea, I'll add it one day!

The Second greatest song ever recorded? War Pigs by Faith no More!
I really like music. I like Swedish death metal, hard-core rap, pop music, country, blue-grass, opera, riot girl, you name it and I probably like it. I have about nine hundred CD's at last count. Of all those CD's, the one towards the top in the picture is by Tom Waits, the album "Rain Dogs." On that album is my favorite song of all time, "Gun Street Girl." check it out, yo. you will like. (I'm a huge Sabbath and Faith no More fan too!)
Anywho, on with the UPDATE!
I got the belly gun sorted out. I looked at all the options, and went with one that both fit the theme, and would not take years to do. I went with a GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon.
This gun fires a steady 3800 rounds per second. (usually in two second bursts to save on cannon barrels.) This idiotic cannon fires a 30mm explosive shell, weighs over 4,000 pounds, (comprising 16% of the planes total weight) and can hit 80% of its rounds within twenty yards of its target at long range.
Just in case all that isn't inspiration enough, the cannon of silliness is only mounted into two planes, and both were custom built to carry the gun. Thats right, the A-10 Warthog (also called the "Tank Killer" for good reason) started as a gun, then the engineers built a plane around the cannon to carry it. When this thing shoots, the plane itself slows by a few miles an hour.
Plus it looks cool, so I built one for my Gargant.
Step one, get some plastic tubing, some Bic pens, a glue bottle top, and a bit of plastic mailing tube with a endcap.
Next, drill and cut to size, then paint.
Glue together, add some clay and details, and some final paint touch ups!
Lastly, mount it!
It's so snug, I wont be gluing it into place. this also gives me the option of changing it out later, and making terrain out of it.
I also got the front armor plates for the shoulders done.
Right shoulder (with some bolt-on rokkit action!)
Left shoulder (with his proppa name and rank!)
Finally, to round out this post I have the final shape of his feet. I kept the add-on sections, but brought them closer and shaped them a little better.
BONUS PICTURE!!!!
This is my favorite scale shot to date, here are the clogs with my shoe for scale. I wear a size twelve, which means my Great Gargant wears about a nine, nine and a half!
Up next, I start finishing last details on all his parts! also, my Duke Nukem nob!

I dunno whats next. I'll finish the terrain board, but I have no plans after that. what would you like to see? my only issue with a Mega Gargant is the size, I feel that the Great Gargant pushes the high-end of even Apocalypse. I would rather make an Ork fortress, or something like that. What I really want to make is a Kroozer gaming table, like in the first stage of the Space Marine video game.

Pretty much. like when I finished the Blasta-Bomma, I did in fact fly it around the house making shoota and plane noises. I did the same with the cannon, I was so happy it come out right and looked good mounted.
UPDATE TIME!
FE, FI FO FIVIETS!
i HATE RIVETS!
These stupid feet took four hours EACH to rivet up. my damn hand still hurst today, I had to just cut a few at a time yesterday. Stupid rivets. Eight hours! thats like, two of the Lord of the Rings movie, on an Apocalypse game! Or a tournament! or what five minutes of a Kevin Costner movie feels like!
Anyway, have some pictures.
There are two doors on each foot.
Studid #%@$ing rivets.
The original feet were the size of Landraiders. these are bigger, haha.
OK, enough bitchin' 'bout rivets. Next is some seriously fun stuff. I got a ton of things for the insides and more detail on the guns.
Up next, ammo belts for the Arm cannons, and I build a fire truck to stuff inside the Gargant! Also, Duke Nukem posing as a Nob! (just needs paintin'!)

UPDATE TIME!!!!
I got a sweet update for you today folks, no boring shoes up in here today! I got guns. big guns. Dakka guns. DakkaDakka guns.
I start by building a vertical hopper for the three side guns out of plastic, brass strips, and fishing weights.
For the other side of the gun, I want some belt fed guns so I get a comb and some thin drafting tape.
Next, I bought some beads that were close enough, and a plastic ammo belt for a spitball gun. I then glued fishing weights to the belt, and added drafting tape to the smaller beads.
I started the mounting by cutting a hole in the gun, and packing the end piece to the ammo belt into the slot.
Next, I added the four belts to the bofors guns, another side belt for a smaller gun, and then I built up the top a little to make it look like an Ork tank.
It was looking pretty, here it is pre rivets.
After dwelling in rivet hell, I primed up this bad boy.
inside
outside without the main cannon belt.
Outside with the main cannon belt
inside hoppers
front
side
See! I told you this was gonna be better then feet! Up next: we stuff a firetruck inside the Great Gargant.

RSJake wrote:That gun arm is beyond words! Awesome! You see that? Awesome just fell short of properly describing it! We'll have to come up with a new word that describes Super-Mega-Uber-Awesome!
Thats why Orks use glyphplates to descirbe how awesome stuff is. My favorite glyph (which I cleverly used on my Gargant) is the "Gar" glyph, it means really big and awesome. The Orks agree with you though, sometimes words arent enough, so the Gar rune is just an empty plate!
Rogue Wolves wrote:you dont know how rediciously awsome those guns look!!, and using a comb and tape to make bullet chains, is GENIUS !
Thanks! I want to just add a pistol grip and take it to a con, to be honest! It's the perfect size for an ork combi-pistol. (human sized, that is!)

Wait till you see what I did the last few days, I think I have lost it. It's a lot of y'alls comments and inspiration. I would not have added the ammo belts on the gun or filled the interior if not for comments to do so.
mullet_steve wrote:what is the name on your spitball gun with the awesome belt feed? I can't make anything out except "max force" I think that's imperium gothic for DAKKA?
It is "Max Force" brand spitball gun. I lucked out and found a ammo pack for only seven bucks, it had two hundred spitballs and the belts. I don't own a Max Force gun, but it seemed to be the premere spitball cannon, and was fully automatic.

Pretty much, I want this thing to clearly be the incarnation of Gork (or possibly Mork.) The Glyphs even say it's a god! take that, "Nightbringer." pfft. what ev's.

There was one gun that all the others were built around, it just had a shorter barrel then any other one! the shells were pretty close (a hair too big) but I figured it was close enough. apparently not, if you saw it! I fixed it with a bigger barrel and a cloth guard.
I have to wait for the clay to set before I can age the barrel and add runes. Good catch though, thanks!
UPDATE TIME!
OK, I have really gone 'round the bend. I may or may not have modelled and painted for two days in a row. All I know is I packed the inside of this silly thing with so much crap it's bursting at the seams with guns, ammo, Meks, Grots, tools, and more gubbins then three Deffskull loota trukks. I have so much to show off, That I'll need to spread it over two updates. I'll do one tonight and one in the morning tomorrow. (It's about thirty pictures in all, I got lots of details to show!
First up, I assembled all the guts of my firetruck, and primed them with a hammered metal primer. this give a cool texture, but only if you thick coat it. I don't recomend using it on highly detailed models!
Next, I did some speed painting on the bits, to break up the flat color a bit. I used metallics, as the insides of the Gargant were already my usual rust color. (which is a non-mettalic rust.) I figured having some variation would be good, considering the size of the model.
Once I had a nice pile of bits, I realized I would need a bit more "meat," so I took three sizes of square blocks and primed them with the hammered metal. I also assembled a bits box of brass tubing, plastic tubing, bailing wire, bits of black sheet plastic, and a huge box of sinkers. I was ready! My plan of attack was simple: stuff everything into the Great Gargant, no exceptions.
Here's a few pictures of the Gargant before the gubbins. (By the way, this is how I had planned on leaving it, plain but good enough. thank you all for urging me to go a bit further.)
And here it is with all the gubbins jammed into it!
Once I got all that stuffed in there, it was time for the crew! I'll post that in the morning! (the Gargant is only half full in these pictures!)
Here is an artist's rendition of what the completed Great Gargant will look like:

Mad genius is never an insult! (unless you're a dictator, and not a modeller.)
UPDATE TIME II !!!!!
Now that I had the Great Gargant guts built, I needed to make it lived in. I really didn't want to paint models to go into it, but it was clear I had no other choice. Go big, or go home.
I painted up two Runtherders, five Meks, twenty-nine Grots, a ton of weapons, and as an added bonus most of the tools from the original Battlewagon kit!
Once that was all painted and ready to go, I got out the Ork shoehorn and jammed em' all into the Gargant. same rule as before, stuff it all in till I was done. I figured that was the best way to make it look like the older drawings of Orks, just crap everywhere.
First I ripped off a wall to the engine room, and added a Mek, some Grots, and the iconic big shoota to the back.
I love how the Night Gobbo in the last pic looks like he's about to make his move! (hmm.. most of the Night Gobbos look like they're up to no good.)
Next, a Runtherder watches over food gatherin'.
Another Runtherder gives a lesson to some grot Mek assistants.
A Burna Boy fixes a small plumbing problem with a big torch.
Grots goofing off in an ammo dump.
Mek about to regulate on said Grots.
Ammo Runt doing his job.
Another stockpile, Another group of Grots goofing off.
Mek fixin' thangs.
Mek keeping the boiler working with the help of a length of twisted I-beam.
This is my Favorite Grot, he's a soccer hooligan from the late eighties. his tab even said "hooligan!" (He's also about to get ganked by another Night Gobbo!)
A rare glimpse of Grots actually working.
Callers and signallers doing their jobs.
Lastly, a trio of distant photos. the first one is from the front, it's the upper deck of the Gargant.
This is the right side of the Gargant.
Lastly, the left side of the Gargant.
Well, thats about it for now! I got life stuff for the next few days, but both the boy and I got some fun miniatures for christmas so I'm sure I'll be back on the horse come monday. (I got a Battlewagon for my Nobs! oh, and Skyrim, so updates may slow a bit, haha.)
Thanks again to everyone, I would not have gone the extra mile had y'all not encouraged me to do so. As Sir Issac Newton said, "I have seen further only by standing on the shoulders of giants."

Go big or go home, as I always say.
Well, you may have noticed that I haven't posted in a while.
You may be thinking, "that pox hasn't posted in a while. maybe work called, and he was gone again for a few months like last time? maybe there was a family emergency? maybe he was in a bad part of town, and got mixed up in a drug deal gone bad, and now he has 36 hours to clear his name both with the FBI and the local mob boss?"
Pfft, I wish. I got Skyrim for christmas. I'm a real casual gamer, even with fallout I slowly played it over several months. (even the first two!) Not Skyrim, holy crap that's a well made game.
Anywho, enough of me being a nerd. I got the Feet painted. I experimented a lot on the feet. There were a few painting techniques that I wanted to try, and testing them out on the feet was the perfect way. I'm not sure if y'all want the blow by blow, so I'll just skip to the finished project. The two main ones I wanted to try was my new air supply rig for my airbrush, and the salt mask technique.
The CO2 tank for the airbrush rules, it does everything I wanted it to. I usually airbrush people and people sized objects, it was fun and challenging to try and airbrush a model.
The salt masking technique has potential, but I made my undercoat too light. I'll try again with a lower plate, but I think I have the painting order for the Gargant figured out for the most part.
PICTURES!
If it doesn't have a gunner, a Landraider can drive under it!

Yes, I love me some epic shoes. I got some jacket work to match the shoes!
I got the basics for the structure points done. I still have to add glyph plates and weathering.
I got the rest of the hull getting worked on right now, just waiting to brush the salt off. After that will be to bring it up to the level of detail of the hull plates.
Next up is a huge amount of artwork to the front of the beast. I wanted something unique, but not clan specific. As part of the Glyph stage, I'll be adding this three-stage monstrosity. (in addition to the usual deluge of Ork graffiti.)
Nearing the finish line boyz, nearing the finish line.

I needed to do something different, due to the size. I was just going to make it a rusted hulk, but after staring at the rust for so long I decided it needed something more. plus all the scaffolding that goes around it will all be rust colored, so I decided a more classic look was needed.

Whats funny is I convinced myself to get one for work, but due to the difficulties in moving the tank I'm pretty sure it's just gonna stay at home unless I'm shooting in the swamp again. I still justify it by saying I'm extending the life of my compressors! I just love the silence. pure, clean air, no filters needed.

Whats funny about that was when I played Inquisitor, My main team was lead by an Ordo Xenos Ork hunter. as per usual, he used the weapons of the enemy, so he had a Custom-combi gun and a Ork chainsword. but then everyone started using the stupid marine guy, who just killed everyone so I switched to Fabius Bile. (Then promptly stopped playing as the game went the way of the Dinosaurs.)
Have I got an update for you!
It starts with stencils made from the drawings I posted last time. these suckers were so big, I had to break out the giant sheet of acetate.
Here's the cut templates.
I wound up changing them quite a bit as I painted.
Here's the completed Symbol of Gork. (or possibly Mork.)
I had to take the picture in subdued lighting, the paints I use are gloss and can't be photoed in direct light. The colors are really bright, once I get it matte coated I'll get much better pictures.
I really like painting this. It's the first time that I've added something so big I could paint it the way I would canvas, in a really loose cross-hatch style. I'm pretty happy with the results, it works for it's size but is in a very different style then what you usually see.
Up next, I got the rest of the main hull painted.
lastly, a picture of it disassembled, and one of my son holding it. He is not small.
The front plates are now 99% complete. all thats left is the final layers of weathering, which I will do all at once when the entire thing is painted. (loose powder works best when you apply then clear coat immediately, haha.)
I still need to build a last layer of detail onto the engine, I'm not sure if I'm gonna keep painting finished pieces or go back to building. (I still need to fix the shoulders ands finish the Lifta-Droppa.)

As for the CO2 tank, I lugged a 20 pounder rental tank around to my markets and birthday parties last year. Had it in a hiking back pack, makes it a bit easier to tranport, but this year, I'm buying a smaller 5 pounder that will be much eisier to move. Yeah, the tank is silent, and you don't have to look around for a plug-in if you are somewhere new!

@ Dave - I used mine for 3 months, painting for about 3 hours once or twice a week, and got about 1/2 way through. I don't know how long it would have lasted if I didn't have to keep taking the main valve off all the time for transportation. They last a good long time.

dsteingass wrote:I'm wondering if I can use my little, noisy compressor to just fill a 20 lb tank?
Hopping in here out of turn. (I normally just post when I'm updating.)
You can't fill a CO2 tank with a compressor, the CO2 tank is actually a liquid. you could get a small five or ten gallon spare tank for the compressor, fill that and use it, though I would imagine you would only get a few hours. experiment before buying! CO2 and nitros tanks are different though, again they are not compressed air, they are compressed liquid.
A 20lb tank of CO2 will last you forever. not really, but its fifteen bucks to fill, and I heard about it from a prop guy who uses it for three hours a DAY. (at least!) He fills his every six months. The only thing is they can be dangerous, you need to store it in a chained place, preferably with a heavy rubber band. There are two dangers with a CO2 tank. The first is an actual breech in the valve. rare, but the thing turns into a missile, hence the friction chaining to a wall. The second is more common and serious, a slow leak that can displace all the oxygen in a room, potentially killing stuff.

Post by: Nowlan
Are there any issues with the temperature of the CO2 coming out of the tank?
Back in my paintball days before I upgraded to compressed air, my 20oz CO2 tank would start to gather ice... in the middle of july.
Or is this negated by the small volume of airflow for airbrushing? Cause the temperature issue only occurred when the CO2 was converting from liquid to gas at a rapid rate.
8689
Post by: pox
It's mostly negated by the small amount of air coming out, and the length of the airbrush tube. Most are long to let the air cool that comes out of a compressor. I get a lot of moisture forming around the gauges and the brass can get quite cold after about an hour of continuous use. I just wipe it down and keep going.
I've also never had any problems with the temperature interacting with any kind of paints, inks, or alcohol used in the airbrush either.

Post by: RSJake
I second Pox's assesment and warnings. But it takes alot to turn it into a missile. It would have to fall over and the valve would actually have to hit something hard. Mine fell over while I was doing airbrush tattoos at a park. I had to clean my underwear out after that, but nothing happend. *whew*. So yeah, it might take a lot to break the valve, but why take chances. And as for a small leak. I wouldn't keep next your bed at night, and keep a window open when it's in the house...just to be safe.
25937
Post by: Nowlan
Unless it was leaking enough to force all the natural air out of the room, the CO2 from the tank is harmless.
And you'd pretty much have to hit the valve with a sledge hammer to turn it into a projectile. The most likely case for a blowout is the tank overheating (tank in too much sunlight), and all that'll happen there is that the burst disk in the valve will trigger when the pressure gets too high, and it'll safely empty the tank (with a lot of wind and loud noise). I just woudn't touch the tank with bare skin directly after, it'll be cold enough to freeze your skin to it.

Post by: pox
For sure, the only danger is displaced oxygen, not the CO2 tank. They are built fairly sturdy, absolutely. Maybe I did go overboard with the caution, so I'll briefly talk about the pros to using a CO2 tank for an air supply.
It is the greatest modeling toy I've ever owned. nothing has made my happier to work with then using the tank. It gives a constant steady stream of clean air, is utterly silent, and is the same price as a mid-grade compressor. to get the kind of hours and hours of use I use I need from my air supply, I would have to buy one of the pro compressors with a overflow tank, priced at around 600 bucks. (I was going to get one, when I heard about using the CO2.)
I love it so much I plan on getting a five gallon tank for doing make-up, by summer I hope to be selling my other compressors (except one for emergencies) and only using CO2.

So long as his workspace is ventilated it shouldn't be an issue. Plus, CO2 is denser than air and sinks to ground level.
According to what I've read, dizziness, drowsiness and confusion all occur from prolonged exposure well before anything seriously harmful, so as long as the model knows of this and speaks up if they experience any of those symptoms they should be fine.
Pox, since you're in the industry, have you watched the SciFi show Face Off? (the special effects makeup competition)
Also, I'm looking forward to seeing the gun arm painted.

Also why Ill hold onto one of my Smartjet pro compressors, haha. Some people are skittish around airbrushes anyway. I had to learn to start the airflow away from their face, the airbrush can cause people to flinch when it first kicks on. In addition to what Nowlan said, When you airbrush faces (especially around the nose, ears, and eyes) you cant use a lot of pressure, I usually set the outflow to five PSI, no more then ten under any circumstances. In most uses I paint everything by hand and use the airbrush to seal and blend. the only time I use it fully is for a full body shot.
Really though the CO2 is the least of my subjects' problems, I'm usually using Pros-aide to apply appliances (It was developed to help hold on prosthetic limbs,) liquid latex to smooth or build wounds from scratch and spirit gum to quick-patch anything I missed. add a layer of blood gel and fake blood and you have a total mess to clean up. Plus you have to deal with me in your face for like two hours on average, can you imagine the horror!?! I can never work as an extra, I would pay all my bad Karma at once, and probably have to sit in a vat of goo for six hours or something.
I oddly enough have not actually seen face/off, I only have a TV for video games. I have applied for it, but don't like my chances of winning. I have no formal training, just tons of tricks picked up from anyone and everyone who can teach me. My expertise is no budget, no time, no problem. I can make a full corpse from stuff you buy at Walmart for under a hundred bucks, blood an all. I'm not knocking my skill BTW, just assessing it fairly. I'm slowly moving towards greener pastures, but as my career advances I'm moving a lot more into script writing, production design, and prop building.
One last thing on this massive de-rail, if you want to see my handiwork, "Jules Vernes' the Mysterious Island" premiers on SYFY February 11th, a Saturday night. My assistant and I did all of the gore/blood effects, the moss creatures, and I designed the Nautilus. It's worth checking out because I'm awesome, although I have not seen even a rough cut. It should be good though, got some decent actors in it and it's directed by Mark Sheppard. (I think it's his movie directing debut.)
Seriously I wont derail anymore! I have been working on the Great Gargant, I should have pics either late tonight or early tomorrow. I got the gun arm mostly painted, the base coat done for the shoulders and deck guns, and have started the last builds needed for the shoulder undercarriage and the Lifta-Droppa.

I have not seen this Warlord titan, I'll have to go check it out! and yeah, Pox the Primogenitor is way cooler than thrakka.
As for rules, thats pretty simple. Nine structure points, a lifta droppa, an anti-troop many shot gun, an anti tank gun, two AA guns, an evil eye, two rokkits and a big shoota. (thats in order the right arm, the left arm, the belly gun, the shoulder guns, the head, the little shoulder platform and of course all Ork walkers bigger then a Dred should have a big shoota to the rear.)
I figure Armor 13/12/10 nine shields, holds ninety boys, and is a walking Idol of Gork. (or possibly Mork.) whole thing should run about 2,500 points.
Really though, I'll use it exactly like my Blasta-Bomma, basically it has whatever rules fit the game of Apocalypse I'm currently playing.

Thats very impressive. I love working with kids, I have had quite a few successes even with brutal make-up. I don't know what you use for make-up, but if you ever wanted to shine on a kid and/parent that was rotten, you should keep some TEMPTU dura-ink on hand. the good stuff stays on for ten days! (the Make-up artist on Sons of Anarchy uses it for all the biker tats, says it lasts all week of shooting.)

Even the deck guns are too big, heres them next to a Rhino.
I have gotten a lot more done, I just keep losing focus this close to the end so I'm jumping from piece to piece. I have a lot of the Lifta-Droppa built, I fixed the inside of the shoulders, primed the head and got it salted, and lastly have most of the big gun painted. It should be take apart-able so you can use it as terrain too!

mullet_steve wrote:monkey I thought there was never enough dakka? I though this was a site rule or summink?
I only quoted the first few posts discussing what I call the "Orkemidies-Badrukk effect." True, you can never have enough Dakka, but it may be possible to break the OBE wall. In theory, you start with a gun platform that is sturdy enough to deep strike. (like a drop pod or Rok.) Next, you load it up with auto-fire cannons, similar to the gun drop pods employed in the dark fields of Armageddon in order to clear landing sites for Thunderhawks. Lastly, you make a giant, rapid fire weapon capable os shooting out these pods at an incredible rate.
At this point you would bleed the OBE wall, as you have a heavy, rapid fire cannon that uses gunships for ammo. Theory though, we would need to build one to test it.
Goresaw wrote:Those deck guns are truly impressive. They really drive home that this thing is a walking battleship.
Thanks! I think they really frame the shoulders and head nicely, I'm glad I went with them. Props to Kr00zer for the idea, I swiped it from his size chart.
I'm also truly impressed by your ability to look at an old project, and completely rebuild it from the ground up. I just don't have the heart to look at my old stuff, half out of shame, and half out of nostalgia, haha.
It's one of my favorite things to do, you should try it! I still have Gobsmashas, a Giblet grinder, Speedstas, and a ton of buggies to update!
Cave_Dweller wrote:Uh, wow! Those guns rule...
My desk is full of DAKKA right now. I should get a picture of just the guns. You could arrange them just so and play Necromunda with just the weapons, haha.( If I start to build anything this big again, someone shoot me.)
Capitansolstice wrote:This is so amazingly cool I cant believe I missed it!!!

It's designed as terrain, actually. I have the table already built, and a thread on it already. I had to hold off on the terrain till I had the final size of the Great Gargant before I could complete the factory wall. look for it a few weeks after the Great Gargant is done!

Thats my son's UMD shorts, he just moved to Louisiana from there. ahh, blessed swampland! I got the head halfway done, will have pics of the final paint job tomorrow for sure.
Rogue Wolves wrote:wow those are some NICE paintjobs!
Soon, they will all be assembled to form VOLTRON! (or possibly Mork.)
Begel Dverl wrote:Oh my Moses, this is divine.
why, thank you!

I might add some when it's terrain. I looked a few Grots to size them up, I'll need to fully sculpt a grot to actually fit and not look silly.
I was going to go full burn today, but my brother needed help with his yard so I took out five hours for brotherly love. I'll be going all out tomorrow though, I'm shooting to just finish.
Here's what I do have for today, I got a Lifta-Droppa. It's not inked or blackened yet.
I added the crane on top to both make it look animated and to have the gun fill out the same space as the left arm. There are some details that are hard to see. The center "energy cannon" bits do not touch anything else. The two half-rings at the bottom control the grab-strength, and the chain runs off the boom and to the half-rings. One assumes that the crane lifts the grabbin' half-rings up and down, to facilitate the actual "lifting" and "dropping". Thats my story and I'm sticking to it, hope you like the gun!
BONUS PIC! it was so popular last time, here's the Rhino for scale.

This is one of the greatest projects I've seen on Dakkadakka so far. I especially love the weathering and the free-handing on the belly. Can't wait to see it all in one piece and on the battlefield.

Its so big, even terrain doesn't seem to keep it in scale. I'll have to fix that, although I'm gonna need a bigger boat!

That is a good thing, I was worried it was too weird, but I had to bulk it up to match the Dakka arm. oh, and I got a Barry the Baneblade to go with Barry the Rhino for this update!

Hey, I don't make the calls over at GW. I just figured the "Demiurge" needed some killin' too!
Alrighty, big update! I got the head done.
On top of that, I finished the Great Gargant.
I have more pictures, I'm going to make a thread in the finished section and then link them here. a lot of the pictures will be closeups of the different parts, some of which I've already shown here. I just wanted to cap off the thread with some proper pictures.
EDIT: here's the link for more pictures. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/423841.page#3801720
Once the other thread is done, I'll edit a link into this thread.
I want to thank everyone that posted into this thread. From simple words of encouragement to thoughtful criticisms and suggestions, you all have elevated this project from simple terrain to something really great. I would not have taken it as far as I did without all the help from y'all. If you're ever in my neck of the woods, stop by for a game.

I really like the modeling and painting.
The design maintains the traditional concept of a Gargant without the moo-moo profile.
