So, basically a kid who got started on a squeaky clean Disney show went on to have a successful singing career performing songs that Christian Mothers groups approve of, and now having reached the age of majority is breaking out of that and looking to have a raunchier career.

While agree she's not as hot as say someone like Scarlett Johansson, Christina Hendrix, 80's Cassandra Peterson, etc I would say she's still bangable though.

Was Jessica Alba a child star who emphasized christian values? I think that's why it's so easy for me to judge her. She was a positive influence on young girls for most of career.

There's plenty of good music around today if you look for it. If you take mass market tweenie pop then what do you expect? I grew up in the late 80s early 90s and I can assure you some of the music produced then was execrable but there was still decent stuff being produced.

Green Day became famous because Mike Dirnt got stoned and thought up the song Longview (go listen to it, there's no denying somebody had to have been on drugs to think up that song), which was their first popular song...so it's not always a bad thing for artists. Not sure if Miley Cyrus is considered an "artist" though...

Most of the stuff I listen to fits somewhere between the 60's and 80's, although I sometimes listen to things before and after those times.

Same here! Jimi, bowie, the doors, pink floyd and led zep make up 98% of my music. It's hard to find music as good as the stuff I already listen to.

Maybe, there's also the issue that not everyone is attracted to big boob curvy chicks. I agree that Miley Cyrus isn't the most stunning girl ever, but straight up good looks isn't the only part of the story, and nor is purity.
I agree with the purity thing, and think Britney's pure and innocent/complete slapper on/off routine was pretty much perfectly maintained, and explained why she managed to claw ahead of performers like Christina Aguilera despite having a much, much weaker voice.
But just being famous counts for a hell of a lot.

I don't know, she doesn't seem any more or less pretty than any other pop singer or actress. She's bland in terms of the image her appearance conveys, but that's entirely the result of marketing, and probably jading on the part of people our (mid-twenties) age. I mean, at least speaking personally, I stopped noticing classically attractive women around age 20. Now I'm more likely to drool over Rosario Dawson or Christina Hendricks than Jessica Alba or Olivia Wilde.

How do you quantify "good"? I mean, how do you subjectively claim that the Bob Dylan song actually was better then the songs it lost to; what sort of metric do you measure by? Commercial success is a much loathed way of measure quality as seen by the disdain held by the entry of Stephen King into the NY Times top 10 of the year, but at the end of the day I think that's the only really unbiased way to measure it. Which means, I guess, that Baywatch was the best show on TV and Mcdonalds is the best restaurant in the world?... now I'm confused as to what my point was.
