ArbitorIan's FORCES OF CHAOS Mega-blog

This started out as a small repaint of my Noise Marines and has turned into a massive and sprawling Chaos thread. When I restarted this in Jan 2014, my plans were to strip and rebuild the army from scratch, getting rid of anything I don't want/need, to try out airbrushing and weathering as ways of increasing the speed of my painting and to get as many random models painted up and useable as possible, instead of sitting around in boxes. Since then the army has grown to hundreds of models and crazy conversions.

It can be configured in a load of different ways, and this blog covers:

- 40k Chaos Space Marines
- 40k Renegades & Heretics

Looks really good! The Terminator Lord and Noise Marine with the banner are my favourites, nice conversion with Fabius too.
The pink is surprisingly subtle yet bright which I like and overall the look nice and 'gritty'; as Chaos Space Marines should!
The bases could do with some more love IMHO and maybe some more vibrant colours on the Noise Marines, but otherwise it's a really good job!
Love the old school figures btw (always liked the Havoc Champion and heavy bolter dude).

ORIGINAL POST

I've had this army for years, but never really taken good pics of them. I'm now updating them to match my Slaanesh Daemon army, with a complete rebase and some pretty intense washes to make them a bit grittier. I'm also reconverting some if the bits I'm not happy with and adding in a few bits I always wanted to do.The models are a mix of the 2ed metal and 3ed (sort of current) plastic CSMs, with plenty of the old mutation frame and bits from the old Slaanesh WHFB range and the Emperors Children box, back when you could order the bits you wanted from GW!

Terminator Lord - rebase and wash
Lord on Steed - rebase and wash
Sorcerer - rebase and wash
Daemon Prince - build, paint, wash
6 Terminators - rebase and wash
6 Noise Marines 1 - rebase and wash
6 Noise Marines 2 - rebase and wash
6 Noise Marines 3 - rebase and wash
6 Chaos Marines 1 - rebase and wash
6 Chaos Marines 2 - rebase and wash
12 Chaos Marines 3 - rebase and wash
6 Possessed - rebase and wash
6 Raptors - rebase and wash
Dreadnought - add new weapons, rebase and wash
Rhino - additional conversion and wash
Predator 1 - additional conversion and wash
Predator 2 - additional conversion and wash
3 Obliterators 1 - additional conversion, rebase and wash
3 Obliterators 2 - additional conversion, rebase and wash

Raptors

Havocs

Sorcerer

Thanks guys. It's amazing what a good dip in old, thickened Vallejo wash can do. Considering they looked like this before, it's a nice, simple update...

Thanks Dave. The pink is the product of two touch-ups and refinements over about five years, so it's good that it still stands out. Originally, it was Tentacle Pink and Red Ink, then another Tentacle Pink highlighing update a few years later, and now the Vallejo Wash.

Regarding the bases, do you mean more touching up because they look a bit messy, or a more complex scheme? The simple scheme is mainly to keep them in line with my Daemons, but I could consider doing something more complex on some character models or fancy squads....

I like them. You got a nice 'genital flesh' tone on your pinks. The lord looks particularly phallic. Your color selections are gritty and Chaos-y, and you make it creepsome without being vulgar. Great work.

Thanks! Can't say I ever intended them to look too phallic but... you're right...

MOAR UPDATES

This is all the basic infantry completed. One squad of Chosen and the last squad of Noise Marines - these ones were going to be Havocs years ago but since you can't give them all Blastmasters any more I decided to use them as Sonic Blasters. Maybe the upcoming Chaos Codex will change that...!

And more! An alternative Chaos Lord on a Steed that I put together from bits once I found I had a spare Steed left over from my Daemon army.

And a Chaos Dreadnought I inherited from a friend about 15 years ago and went to town with. It's the base of an Epic Titan, with parts of the old metal Skeleton Chariot model as a hull. Just magnetised a couple of weapon options onto it, and hoping that the new Codex will allow me to put the Blastmaster back on...

And finally, in time for a bit of gaming today, I've finished the three tanks. Two Predators and a Rhino.

The Rhino just got a bit of a wash and touch-up. No big changes from before. The tubes are made from crushed and cut copper piping - I used to use these as noise amps back in 3ed.

The Predator Destructor had it's noise amp added, in hope that these make a return, and then the dirge casters remouted onto the back of the chassis, and some general spikiness added. Need to clear up some wash pooling on this one...

And the Predator Annihilator had a whole new Lascannon assembly constructed, using one of the spiky halo things from the Chaos frame and some Leman Russ engine bits as the gun barrels.

So, I have been wanting a proper Daemon Prince for this army for ages, and there's ONE slot left in the carry case, so I thought I'd build one out of the contents of my Bitz Box. I based the model on some random bits of the old WHFB Azazel model I happened to have lying around - the body and the front leg. I have the head and one of the arms as well, but I'm not actually a big fan of the sculpt - and I wanted him to look a bit beefier and meaner - like a Space Marine.

After LOTS of rummaging, I came up with this.

Body/Front Leg - Azazel
Back Leg - Salvaged from a really old Daemon Prince.
Head - Ogre Irongut Helm with the face cut out and a GS 'fleshy maw' put in.
Left Arm - Eldar Avatar
Right Arm - Ogre arm with an Avatar sword

I need to thin out the Ogre arm a bit - it's a bit too large at the moment, and maybe find a large pauldron to complete the CSM look, but I think it's generally good. I'm going to give him big furry muscled shoulders so that I can have the option of magnetised wings, and (if I have the magnets to hold the weight) then I intend to use these old metal wings...

AND the newly painted CSM got their first game yesterday at the Overlords' event in Barking - battle report is at http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/431390.page

Well it seems like Slaanesh CSM aren't exactly capturing the minds of the Dakka Community at the moment, but I've started, and I'm almost finished, so onward we go!

Here are some Possessed marines I've rebased and washed. These had the heaviest wash of all - they look REALLY dirty (quite a bit dirtier than planned, actually). The bodies are the original Saurus Warriors from the old WHFB boxed set, with Mutation Frame arms and heads and Berserker legs..

I've also based the Daemon Prince. Round one of magnetisation was a bit of a failure - the magnets were in the wrong place, and there's no way they're going to hold those giant metal wings. So, like my Daemons army, I'm going to use Gargoyle wings. They're not as big, but look suitably evil and ripped...

Thanks - yup, I have yet to see what they look like with the Dayglo Daemons. With the new Chaos Codex, I think I might be able to use them on the same table again soon...!

---

No nipples yet, but some more bits box fun on the Daemon Prince. I dug out some old Chaos Warrior arms and scraped the shoulder pads out, to use as basic armour.

I took some spikes from a Chaos Vehicle sprue and put one at the end of the sword and one on the shoulder plates. He also has a new 'back' to his robe, taken from an Ogre bit (I think).

And the whole of the shoulder arrangement sits on a greenstuffed 'mane' of fur, into which is inset the magnets for the wings. I put a rough dob of GS down and put in the magnets first, and then positioned them with the wings attached. Once the GS was dry, I then took off the wings (since now the magents were 'stuck') and did all the fur around them..

DAEMON PRINCE! Hey presto. Painted in an evening in time for today's game - a Daemon Prince made entirely out of bits from my bitz box. I've started work on the Obliterators next.

Llamahead wrote:Part of me thought this would be a day-glo army like the Daemons most of me is glad a more sensible approach was taken.............

Even through all the grime, there's so much skin on this that he still looks pretty Dayglo...

Henners91 wrote:Can't wait to see how those wings work out on the DP

I like them, but can't help thinking they're a LITTLE bit too small. What do you think? I'm not that worried about it - the only other ones were those huge metal ones which he magnets wouldn't support, so while I could have pinned them in place, he wouldn't fit in my carry case any more...!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also started work on the Obliterators. They were built in a bit of a rush a few years ago, again from spare parts. This time I'm going to be doing quite a lot of bulking out with power cables and fuel lines. I'm off to borrow some of those rolly-cable-making-plates from Panic this afternoon. For now, I've started on some big, bulky power packs, and scraping the old basing off...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The original batch of Oblits had these bulkier should pads, which I think look much better (and provide flat surfaces to attach cables to)

But the problem was, these were old Exo-Squat shoulders, and I only had one left. I've press-molded this in Insta-Mold, and I'm going to make six copies to use for the other batch of Obliterators.

I've also made three more backpacks..

For the next couple of months until they change the damn Codex? Nah, I can't fit them in the box anyway, and you know the rule - if it can't fit in the case, it's not in the army..

Thanks!

Llamahead wrote:The obliterators are interesting. How eactly does the tube tool work?

It's a set of small plastic 'plates' with ridges set into them (see pic above). You roll out a thin tube of green stuff with your hands, and then roll it in between the plates, and the plates push the ridges into it. You get three 'pairs' of plates in the set, with three different sized ridges. Takes a bit of practice to get the hang of, but after that it's easy.

This movie explains it quite well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkT63r1-7QI

Those Oblits are utterly sick. I love them. Even the Space Crusade missile launcher looks good.

In fact, I love all of the rank and file in this army.

Do you think there is any chance of adding some of the cabling to the Rhino and Predator? I feel they need a little something extra.

Thanks Fifty! I'll have a look at adding come cabling around the tube stacks. One of the issues with the tube tools is that the plates are only about 1.5" square - so making long tubes is quite difficult...

2014! COMPLETE REBUILD!!!

So, the quick rebase and wash got me through the last couple of years but those 2005 paint jobs are still bothering me, a couple of codexes have come and gone and the army needs a rejig.

So, I thought I'd go the whole hog and do a complete rebuild and paint!

- New pale purple colour scheme to be achieved quickly with AIRBRUSHING and WEATHERING! (My first attempt)
- Make all the sonic weapons consistent across the army (recasting the old ones where necessary)
- Change the RT Rhino and Predator models for some conversions using Ramshackle vehicles (the original Preds are going into a pre-Heresy Imperial army)
- Massive bunch of Cultists from Necromunda models
- Heldrake, Helbrutes, Helmaulerfiend and other Heldaemonengines

The first step in this is to disassemble and strip the whole army. This task is what has stopped me doing this sooner - I just can't be bothered. But a quick internet search turned up these guys - http://www.iwantapaintedarmy.co.uk/services/paint-stripping-service - who offer a paint stripping service for a pretty reasonable price. Thus, every troop model has been boxed up and sent to Gateshead! I imagine they'll take a few weeks to get back, so in the meantime I'll start with the big models and try and get my painting method sorted.

This is the sort of scheme I'm looking at - from rwzimmerman and magic8ball (spoilered as they're not MY photos).
Spoiler:

I want the same purple base, but much paler, and dirtier. I'm planning to spray lavender, airbrush highlight REALLY pale lavender, paint some gold/silver areas, then oil wash and dirt wash and weather with dusty grey ground.

------------------------

Phase 1 - Rhino Vehicles

Since all the basic troops are off being stripped, I'm going to start with the Rhino chassis. The new vehicles will be based on four Ramshackle Iron Grumler models I've had lying around since they were £8 each about four years ago! They're gonna need a lot of work, but I think they'll look good as weathered early-mark Rhinos. This is the Ramshackle image...

Now, some big changes need to be made. First, the body needs to sit lower (level with the tracks) and the nose pushed back a bit. This should be easy - the Iron Grumbler comes as four main pieces.

The thing is, it's also a little large for a Rhino, too. Here's it next to one of my Arbites chassis.

And moving the nose back makes it much longer. So, I'm planning to take the engine section and chop off the turbine/vent section, leaving only the raised 'back' bit. If anything, this will make it a couple of mm too short, but much closer to Rhino size. The turbines will become some interesting terrain!

The other thing about Ramshackle stuff is that the separate blocks are designed as conversion parts, so they have detail on sides you never usually see. I'm going to sand down a lot of the detail work on the inside of the track sections and outside of this body section so the overall width decreases and the parts fit together better.

And finally, I have four of the Iron Grumlber kits. Two will be turned into Rhinos and two will be turned into Predators, using these old boxy 2ed Predator turrets - I think they'll look good on the battered frame.

Should start the sanding and chopping later this morning...!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Spent all day on the Rhinos, starting with using a large rotational sander on all the parts to remove the rivets that aren't seen, and chopping off the engine blocks. After this, the basic four parts were put together with green stuff and glue and all the extras attached. The two Rhinos have side hatches and circular hatches on top. The two Predators have the turret plates.

I then went and Chaosified them - all have smoke launchers and the two Rhinos have the old IG spiky Searchlights. Then various chaos accessories were added to make them spikier..

And finally, I removed the 'noise tubes' from my two old RT Preadators and attached them to the new turret.

There's still a lot of filling left to go, which I hope I'll get done during the week - a lot of the hatches and exhaust bits just 'bolt on' leaving a lot of gaps, and there are still gaps between the body and the track sections. So, lots of Milliput to start filling with!!

This evening, I'm going to strip the paint from the other turret and construct the Predators' side sponsons.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And at the end of the day - TWO PREDATORS!

I made the side lascannons out of some long Chaos muzzles and some exhausts from the Leman Russ kit. The rest of the metal parts are the old 2ed Predator.

Well, they can be found at http://ramshacklegames.co.uk along with lots of other things. I'm a big fan of these not-Rhinos - they look a bit like the oversized Heresy-era prototypes from the Visions of Heresy books.

I'd be aware, though, that they need a fair amount of work to get up to scratch - the resin is smelly, heavy and quite brittle and there are a lot of bumps, bubbles, etc. Not nearly as easy to work with as FW or Finecast resin!

MOAR WORK DONE!

I've finally got around to filling the vehicles - Milliput in all the cracks to make them look a bit better...

I've also drilled and added a flat magnetisation point to the back corner of the hull on every vehicle, for upgrades

And then built the first batch! Three Havoc Launchers and two Dirge Casters. The Havoc Launchers are built from IG Searchlight backs, some plastic tubing, some plasticard riveted sheeting and a variety of different missiles from the bits box...

Here's how they look on the vehicles

Massive gap while I was away for work and ordering LOTS of new toys and modelling supplies.

I've had my first ever go at airbrushing! I'm really getting to like my new airbrush setup after this - spray painted the tanks the base pink colour and then mixed up a paler shade for highlights and here's the progress so far.

(My good camera is at work so apologies for the dodgy-colour-balanced iPhone photos!)

I also sprayed the tracks and dozers silver, and I've started on the rest of the base colours - mostly silver and gold. Then I'm going to town on the weathering.

The airbrush makes things REALLY fast. I like this.

Congrats on the first airbrush experience! Will definitely need some more photos with colour balance when you can get em as it's hard to tell they're even pink in some of them

Looks like the colours went on nice and smooth though, airbrushing base coats does indeed make things really fast, and smoother, and easier to blend, I could go on about how much I love it too.

Thanks - yes, I'll get some better photos when I'm back in the country. The first image is closest to the real colour. The actual base layer is spray painted, and then I used the airbrush for panel highlighting and grading, which I've never tried before, and then to very quickly mask off and paint the tracks.

I've got a week off and I've been busy!

I've been away for a few weeks, during which time my minis arrived back from the stripper. He didn't charge me for most of the plastics as he said he was having a really hard time stripping them and once I got them back I could see why - not sure what method he was using but he seems to have been scraping the paint away? Seem like a terrible way to do it. Anyway, the majority of plastic were still paint covered, but all the expensive OOP metal parts came up really well.

So, I've taken all these bits and assembled the first part of the infantry, which will comprise..

24 x Noise Marines
12 x Raptors
2 x Sorcerers
1 x Jump Pack Lord
6 x Warp Talons

The bodies are mostly standard Chaos Marines or Berserkers (with the Khorne symbols taken off). This is the pile of arms, shoulder pads, heads and parts that need to be painted - OOP GW Noise marines of all eras, resin parts from Maxmini and Kromlech, all sorts.

I've also got Maxmini Jump Packs for the Raptors and Lord

The Lord himself is a conversion from an old Raptor Lord with various Slaanesh bits. I couldn't decide what to give him, so I magnetised one arms and made sword, claw and fist options.

The two Sorcerers are the old 2ed models

And the Warp Talons I'm not so sure about. I was gonna make them almost possessed with Gargoyle wings, but now I've actually done them, I think I prefer the jump pack look - the wings just look a bit silly. Might remove these and order more jump packs..

I then started CASTING! I want to use the 2ed-era Sonic weapons for all the Noise Marines. When I originally built this army, the GW Bitz service was still running and I ordered 12, which I still have, and then I filled in any Noise Marines built since with the newer weapons. The old ones are pretty hard to find now, especially as bits, so I've been recasting them to make up the numbers (along with the matching old Noise Marine backpack).

Here's an early attempt - lord of flash, but I think I can make it work...

More progress as the week goes on!

I love those old 2nd Ed Noisemarines bits! I'd have so many more if I could get my hands on them for a reasonable price.

And I really like your idea of using Daemonettes claws on the warp talons. I think you should stay with the wings on them.

Hmmm, tastes of chaos...yummy.

Like what you've done with the ramshackle grumblers, those really do have the feel of early marks

I like the gargoyle wings on the warp talons, the 'natural' winged look feels more Slaaneshi than jet packs to me.

OKAY. Progress since last time - I've gone through and done all the base colours on the whole first Infantry batch. Here they are, no backpacks, base colours done

And the Lord, Sorcerers and Warp Talons, this time with quite a lot of airbrushing on the cloaks and talons - not looking that obvious in these rough photos.

And here's the whole batch awaiting backpacks and weathering/washing.

Speaking of which, I've decided to recast the old Slaanesh Lord backpack to use as Doom Sirens. Here's the casts, and the backpacks I need to paint next!!

I finally picked up the last five Maxmini Jump Packs for the Warp Talons at Salute this weekend (yes, going for Jump Packs instead of Wings I think).

I also had a bit of 'cool chemicals day' - there are so many small resellers at Salute that you can just browse all the weird and wonderful modelling product for ages. Here's my haul...

- 4 weathering powders from ProPigments - some of the military modelling guys sent me over to them when I was asking about powders - apparently a lot of them had switched over to ProPigments from MIG.
- 2 simple acrylic primers from Miniature Painter - cheap at £1.50 each, and always useful. I'll probably thin these down for airbrushing and put them in bigger dropper bottles.
- 4 weathering dyes from Modelmates - I have one of their pots and one of their sprays already. They're water soluble dye that works a bit like an oil wash, but is water-based - after it's dry, you can pull it around with a wet cotton bud. They also do spray cans of this stuff.
- 1 Modelmates Verdigris - this is another dye, but formulated thicker so that it paints straight onto opaque surfaces.
- 6 Vallejo bits - someone was selling Model Colour paints at 6 for £10, but the rack included all the technical stuff too - I'm not sure if those were meant to be on offer! Anyway, I got three washes, some Plastic Putty, Metallic Medium and Liquid Mask.

I also picked up some cheap MDF city terrain and some Maxmini GravPistols - successful trip!

Started the second batch of infantry!!

I finished the first batch and even got a game in with Panic - battle report up soon - but noticed a few tweaks and details I wanted to paint differently before photographing them properly, so I'll get them online in a few days.

In the meantime, I started the second batch, consisting of..

- 3 differently armed champions for Noise Marines and Raptors
- 1 spare Noise Marine, so I can combine units
- 7 Chaos Terminators and a Terminator Lord
- 12 Havocs with 6 Missile Launchers (or a small CSM squad)
- Lucius conversion.

Here's Lucius, made from the front of a DV Chosen I had lying around, an old Chaos Warrior whip, Slaanesh power sword, and a GS cloak. He'll have a head from the old mutations sprue.

Chaos Terminators made from the old metals. Abbadon has been converted into the unit champion with some old Chaos Warrior bits. I don't like trophy racks, so all the slots were filled with milliput.

I think this is the old Chaos Terminator Sorcerer (??), made into my Lord by stealing Drach'nyen from Abbadon.

All the gun arms are magnetised, including these combi-plasmas made from old plastic plasma pistols.

I made 12 regular Chaos Marines - 2 Champions, 4 Bolters and 6 with missile launchers. I can field them as either 2 x 6 Havocs with 3 ML each, One smaller squad of Havocs, or a cheap CSM unit. I wanted them all to have the old Missile Launcher, so recast the weapon and the corresponding backpack..

And finally, additional unit champions. Raptor champion with a power sword (to use up my last jump pack), so that I can split my 12 Raptors into 2 squads. Two Noise Marine Champions, one with a power fist and doom siren, and one with a combi-plasma.

Actually, I reckon those auto cannons might be more fun in the Iron Hands army I've been planning for ever! Maybe I could get some anyway, though I'm in danger of just having a million heavy support options and nothing else!

Meant to ask you if you have any spare regular boring chos marine heads? I've run out!

Yeah, I'm going to have to go over a lot of the missiles - the missile luncher pieces came out really well, but the front of the missiles were often lost. Looks like I'm gonna have an afternoon of rolling green stuff into little cones...

Thanks! I'm much happier with this scheme. As I've got better at painting over the years, paler armies have become the norm. Certianly when I painted this army the first time around, I wasn't aware of things like washes, and so having most of the model black was an easy way of getting them painted quickly. The weathering also really helps hide all the different bits and influences, as you say (and the fact that there are some dodgy recasts in there!!)

Thanks! Here's even more progress - this batch is FINISHED!

So, we have the Terminator Lord - who can also stand in for Abaddon if needed.

And the Terminators - they all have magnetised right arms, except the Champion (converted from the real Abaddon model).

And here are the magnetised weapon options. Combi plasmas are converted from the Berserker plasma pistol.

Lucius, converted from a DV Chosen, Noise Marine Doom Siren and sword, an old Chaos Warrior whip arm, a mutation sprue head, and plenty of green stuff!

Then, back to the regular infantry. Using up some spare parts, I made an extra Noise Marine Champion and Raptor Champion

And then two squads of Havocs, each with three Missile Launchers. These can also be used as regular Chaos Marines if I needs a small squad.

And the Havoc Champions, with heads from the same Kromlech sprue as the Warp Talons

Thanks guys. I'm away for a few weeks now for work so I thought I'd get something tedious done while I'm there - something I can do for an hour every morning in the hotel room.

Soooo. CHAOS CULTISTS! 45 Cultists, stripped by the stripping service who did the rest of the army, assembled and based and ready for spraying. I want to get them sprayed pink and airbrush highlighted before I go, so that I can do all the brush work while I'm away.

Most are Necromunda Cawdor or Redemptionists

And these guys were Tallarns who had their heads cut off ages ago. I replaced them with Miniatures of the North cultist heads from Anvil Industry.

This is the first batch of regular guys. The intention is that this becomes a separate Guard / R&H army but I'll wait until FW update their list before doing all the special guys as a separate batch...

Not THAT sort of service...

I sent all the minis originally to these guys - http://www.iwantapaintedarmy.co.uk/services/paint-stripping-service - who offer to strip the paint so you don't have to!

It turned out reasonably well - all the metals seem to have been chemical stripped and came back clean and shiny with paint, glue and GS all removed. I'm not sure what they attempted with the plastics, though. It looked like they were trying to scrape the paint off (!!), and in the end it took so long that I said just to stop and send them back. They only charged me for the metals.

I'm considering sending them an email telling them about the marvellous properties of Dettol, but SURELY they must have heard of this before...? Anyway, all the cultists are nice and clean, and any plastics I actually needed I just Dettoled myself...

Gah, so work took over as always and I finally managed to get some geeing in last night. While away I got all the base colours on my cultists painted, and last night I did the shading.

I'm liking the oil wash method more and more - I've used it on this whole army and it makes shading and highlighting much easier since there's no need to go over and re-highlight each colour after the wash is put down. On these, removing the dried wash from the robes returns them to their natural pink and makes them stand out against all the other muted colours...

Basing and sealing still to go..

And I also got started on the Bike squad - assembled from various bits of Chaos and regular bikes.

WELL, I'm planning to magnetise everything, but I've actually come up with a little dread problem.

I wanted FIVE Helbrutes, so I can take a Murderpack. In a Murderpack, one of the Hellbrutes is a Champion. I had already won from an eBay auction a terribly converted plastic SM dread and I had two metal Chaos Dreads, so I bought two more, thinking that the plastic one could have some better conversion work and then made into the Champion.

So, here are the four metal 'not-Champion' dreads, semi-assembled. The gun arms will be magnetised, and the actual CCW on the other are will be magnetised.

The problem is, it turns out that those Chaos Dreads are a fair bit bigger than my 'Champion' conversion!!!

He looks a bit weedy next to four of them!

So, what do I do?

- Buy another metal dread and shelf this project until he arrives. They're quite cheap on eBay.
- Carry on with this guy and attempt to make him look bigger? This was my original idea, but I reckon it might just be too much a size difference for a bit of GS to fix.
- Just stick with 4. I have to Decimators on order, I could always use one of them as the Champion (though they are seriously MUCH bigger)

Yeah,
I thnk keep going! The murder pack is looking great.
That old model looks great in a pack! Although have you concidered head swaps?

Use the plastic dredd as the base layer on segregated armour like the metal ones.
Pick a awesome torso and use he cable tool to go mad and wire that sucker in there!

If that doesn't work you can always fall back on eBay and buy another...

Post by: Thraxas Of Turai

I think you should carry on with the conversion and just try to add an inch to him, the area between the feet and metal supports looks rife for it. Maybe even something as simple as washers or spacers?

Love the rest of the army too.

ArbitorIan's FORCES OF CHAOS!! @ 2014/06/19 18:17:17

Post by: monkeytroll

If you put some washers between feet and legs and bulk up the shin pad (maybe swap the feet out for a pair of the chao ones?), and add a bit of height between pevis and torso it'll bring him nearer in height without having to chop up the legs. A champion doesn't have to be bigger, just cooler

And as panic suggests, you could use some plasticard to build a second layer on the torso to get a similar segmented look to the armour. That'll add a bit more.

ArbitorIan's FORCES OF CHAOS!! @ 2014/06/22 13:21:43

Ok, thanks for the suggestions. I could really be bothered with all the plasticarding, especially when I had so many bits lying around, so I went to town with spare parts (and the Forgeplanet Cable Maker!).

Here he is!

And standing tall

So, those are the legs from my OLD Dread conversion, who is soon to become a Forgefiend. Originally they were from an EPIC Warlord titan. I also gave him quite a big boost at the ankles, covered up with the cabling.

The gap at the top was filled over by these spare armoured plates I had from the Ramshackle Rhino conversions.

And I used a regular Chaos Dread power plant, which means I'm gonna have to recast one to make up the numbers. Speaking of which, I've already started on the arms.

So, magnetising these buggers has been a NIGHTMARE, taking me all week on and off.

So, I started by magnetising the main bodies - they have a point on the CCW arm, a point on the plug for the main weapon arm, and a point on the hull for upgrades. Annoyingly, the addition of the magnet cause the plug to be too long, so I had to go back and do them all again!

Here's the champion again, this time with a proper left arm.

And then, the weapons. Here they all are. I recast the Autocannon arm to use as a base for all my weapon additions. I also used some old SM Dreadnought arms, as I have no other use for them.

Everything has it's socket widened and a magnet inside.

And the close combat weapons have a point for affixing to the left arms. At some point I want to do some mini-missile launchers and some Thunder Hammers, but I'm not sure how yet.

The Lascannons are 1ed Land Raider bases with chaos nozzles.

And these fethers were what took me so long. Close combat right arms using some old metal Kan arms donated by Panic. I should have done them all like the ones on the left, because the ones on the right were an absolute nightmare to get balanced and sitting correctly - I must have pulled them apart four or five times and re-greenstuffed them...!

RIGHT. Off to be sprayed pink.

OK, I'm away again for work, but I've taken a little box of toys so I can make some progress. Once I get back I'll only have a couple of weeks until NOVA, and I have whole Heldrakes to cast/convert/build.

So, I've started on some Spawn, converted from some Mantic Trolls and Ogres that I got free in their KoW Kickstarter. They look suitably gribbly, and I like that they have plates of armour still riveted to them. Very basic at the moment, I'll get some extra GS muscle sculpted this week to cover the joins.

And I've also started updating the Obliterators - some Maxmini shoulder pads and Anvil Industry heads and backpacks to make them look a bit less messy and more intentional. More cabling to go on later in the week.

They're restic but they seem fine. No more mold lines than a plastic model and the odd tag like you get on a FW model. The only annoying thing I've noticed is that the restic is a lot harder to cut than either plastic or resin, making the conversion or prep work a bit more annoying.

Post by: ArbitorIan

So, back from work and I have two weeks before I leave for California, followed by the NOVA open. Here's the list I'm planning on taking...

CAD - Crimson Slaughter
- Belakor [350]
- 12 Cultists [58]
- 12 Cultists [58]
- 12 Cultists [58]
- 12 Cultists [58]
- 2 Obliterators, MoN [152]
- 2 Obliterators, MoN [152]
- 1 Obliterators, MoN [76]
- Heldrake (Baleflamer) [170]
- Heldrake (Baleflamer) [170]

Formation - Hellfist Murderpack
- Helbrute Champion (Multimelta, Power Scourge) [110]
- Helbrute (Multimelta, Powerfist, Hvy Flamer) [115]
- Helbrute (Multimelta, Powerfist, Hvy Flamer) [115]
- Helbrute (Multimelta, Powerfist) [100]
- Helbrute (Multimelta, Thunder Hammer) [105]

Total : 1847

So, I need to get a few things painted and I've been having an assembling day to get started.

I need more cultists. All my guys have pretty random weapons (shotguns, rifles, pistols, axes, exterminators, etc), so I'm probably ok to just say 'these are all pistols', but I'm going to have to leave the obvious heavies at home, so I've assembled ten more random guys from various places. A last few Redemptionists, a DV Cultist, some WHFB Beastmen and Flagellants. Anything in a robe, really!

The Obliterators are all assembled!

I need a couple of extra weapons for the Dreads - a Thunder Hammer and more Multimeltas!

And finally, I got two Hell Blades that I've been meaning to convert into Heldrakes, so cast up their pointy bits to use as extra wings and bulk them out a bit!

A few hours later....

OKAY. I've spent all day on these guys and I have massive amounts of complicated progress to show. Here goes.

I started by filling the cockpit area with a aluminium-laced modelling putty from Sylmasta. I'm going to paint the 'glass' sinister green like all the other lenses in the army. The thin resin that is inside the window frames needs a bit of support to not just break at the first sign of a breeze.

But most importantly, this is a pre-flying-stand model and has nowhere good on the underside to put a massive cross-shaped flight stand. So, I'm going to drill a bit hole and mount it on a length of plastic rod, but I need quite a deep hole, which the putty will provide. PLUS, the centre of balance is quite odd, and the metallic putty will add more weight directly above the rod.

I cut down a length of 10mm plastic rod to test.

Fast forward a few hours, and I've bent, cleaned up and assembled the rest of the bits. The tails needed to be bent into shape, but the rest went together really easily.

I built three magnets into each of the wing recesses, which will be where the additional cast Heldrake wings sit. I smoothed over the area with Milliput afterwards. The mechanisms for these additional wings are made from some old Leman Russ wheels.

I placed magnets on the underside so that I can switch between Autocannons or a Baleflamer. I had to scrape off the little mounting bars to the outside and mount the weapons wider than usual to accommodate my massive pole (hee!!).

I then made two big flamers out of some old FW Heavy Flamers and Sentinel flamer tanks.

And finally, drilled through the bases and mounted the plastic rod inside and tested with a fully built Helblade.

Only the additional Heldrake wings to do next!!

Post by: ArbitorIan

More progress on the Hellblades. Here's a dry fit of the wing assemblies.

In the end, I needed the three magnets and some long pins to keep them in place and secure.

And, after some Milliput work to seal gaps, here they are sprayed pink!

Returns and extra borders were made from Milliput to fill the gaps, and massive cables added to make it feel a bit more detailed. Turns out cable-making is a lot easier in Milliput than in Green Stuff.

I thought that army on the frontline battle report looked ruddy familiar, big bonus on using the hellblades for drakes is that the hellblades just got rather good (looking at IA13 right now) for when you don't want the extra blades on. Yes! That was one of their first outings!

And double yes - I got the new IA13 book at WHFest and they've become quite good. Just a simple change that suddenly makes them worth their points. Still fragile, but 6 S7 AP4 TL Rending shots is pretty good...

So, the next batch is in-progress. I've got a bit of green stuffing to do, and then out with the pink...

Finally finished the Spawn, made from various bits. They need some GS to blend in the various parts.

And they've got some Chaos Hound buddies. The one at the back is a Bones mini. Useable as more spawn or combat familiars until I get my Ogryn Brutes up and running.

Speaking of Renegades, here are the parts for their Heavy Weapon Teams. Six auto cannon, three lascannon and three mortars. Some of the wheels had to be recast to make up numbers.

I converted some kneeling gunners for the mortars and lascannons, using Highlander legs.

And recast some gunner bodies for the auto cannons

And then made some more random guys from anything with a cloak, including a couple of loaders.

I then drilled 26mm holes in all the 60mm bases.

These cheap MDF bases are slightly smaller, and will fit inside the plastic ones.

Which means that I can make the loaders removable!!

Now to GS and then to spray...

They get Dreadclaws now, which are good, but pricey at 100-ish points!

----

MORE STUFF DONE - I used the Hounds, Beastmen and Spawn as attempts to paint skin tones using only the airbrush and oil wash - no real brushes involved. I'm trying to figure out the recipe for my daemonettes, and I don't think I've got there yet. The spawn are closest but still too dark, and the beast men/hounds I think suffer from a lack of differentiation in the colours used on them.

But yes, all done! Next!

Chaos Hounds

Beastmen, for use as Cultist characters and champions

Chaos Spawn, converted mostly from Mantic Ogres and Trolls with various other mutation bits thrown in

And more Cultists finally finished! The Renegades section of the army is growing by the day...

Then, some loaders for the Heavy Weapon Teams. These are made from Empire Flagellants and MotN heads.

Then, the Heavy Weapon Teams! I have three Lascannons, three Mortars and six Autocannon Teams in total. Here's the first Lascannon, and how it looks with the loader removed.

And the whole Lascannon squad.

And then some Mortars

And some Autocannons

Next stage has begun. The Cultists need a ride, so I've started construction on the Renegade Chimeras from a load of old models, bits and plasticard.

The lasguns ports are filled in with black card - I don't like the pokey Lasguns sticking out.

The front hull weapons are magnetised (some bits taken from my old Suicide Legion vehicles), so I can swap in Heavy Flamers if I want - might be useful on BS2 renegade tanks!

Some Chaosification was achieved using these old Terminator trophy racks on the turrets.

And I had to reconstruct the underside of some of the turrets. I'll aim to have a selection of different turret pieces.

I've also rescued these side skirts from an old project

Which will attach to these rails on the sides of the tanks, made from bits of sprue.

Post by: ArbitorIan

Nobody is responding, but I BUILT MORE STUFF ANYWAY!!!!

Hellhounds! I was inspired by this conversion, but I'm not as good with plasticard and rivets.

So, built my own version using spare hull weapon mounts from the Leman Russ kit, and the back of the 'turret' section bulked out with the Chimera side boxes I didn't use.

Added some Chaossy chains to the sides using jewellery chain and flagellant weapons.

And also built another four Chimera turrets. Two heavy flamers, one auto cannon and one massive twin-linked Heavy Bolter for my command tank (using the old Hellhound turret bits.

Now, off to find some sandpaper...

The Hellhounds and Chimeras are painted and just awaiting the final washes. While the varnish dries, I've been setting up some head recasting.

I got a hold (at great expense) a set of the newer-model Redemptionists with the separate head and weapons. They're really hard to find now, as they were never really released for very long.

Anyway, I want to use their pointy heads for my Veteran section, so I'll need to make some more. I've lined them all up on a lollipop stick with sprue as the funnel. You get a huge selection of heads for only eight miniatures.

And cast using these cool not-Lego blocks I found in a Japanese hobby store. They're in a one piece mold - hopefully I'll be able to get them out again easily!

Actually, the moulding has gone wrong. All cast nicely, but I can't seem to get anything in without air bubbles. I've even widened all the entry points, but no success.

Might have to try insta-molding it. Or redoing them as a two-part with escape channels cut in.

:/

ArbitorIan's FORCES OF CHAOS!! @ 2014/12/14 10:40:57

Post by: ArbitorIan

To distract from the casting woes... TANKS! First up, three Chimeras, marked by their old Imperial owners as A, B and C for easy recognition. The side skirts are actually just made from mounting board - if I was making them now I'd use plasticard and do a bit more detailing, but I made them years ago for a different army and just wanted to get some use out of them.

And with some alternate turrets. Twin heavy bolter leader turret converted from the old Hellhound base and still legal as per the FW rules.

Some weathering detail on the rear hatch and the side skirts. I decided to try some actual airbrush graffiti since I just started using a 0.2mm Iwata. It looks pretty convincing!

And the Hellhounds - the hull conversions blend in much better with all the weathering. The main weapon and hull weapons are all magnetised, though I haven't assembled any Chem-cannons yet.

And got them finished just in time to play some games with them at the Overlords Christmas Party!

Which then inspired me to start the next batch - the Leman Russ hulls! Five tanks in total - three regular Russ bodies, one with side skirts and track guards and an old FW Laser Destroyer!

ArbitorIan's FORCES OF CHAOS!! @ 2014/12/14 10:47:29

Post by: Littletower

Chimeras turned out great. Side skirts look good indeed, seeming a later addition to a "recovered" tank. Re-turreted Hell Hounds are spot on as well.

And nice "next batch" too, will be waiting to see what comes up with those!

Maybe that would help. I got the impression the bubbles were getting trapped in the entry points because of their size though (since a
To of the pointy hats are fine but the faces fethed) but maybe a quick vibrate would help.

This might actually be what I do. Make a proper two part mood with an escape channel linking the points of the hoods and coming back up the sides, and wider entry points on all the heads

SO, more progress on the tanks. I'd left some bits in Dettol for a while to re=use, and started with some stripping. The metal stuff came out fine, but some of the tank turrets are just a mess of old paint.

So, I decided to do some more casting. I guess I should have taken 'before' photos, but this is the (handily) single-piece turret from an old FW Exterminator in a two-part silicon mold.

And while I was there I put the cultists heads back in. Two parts with a piece of cable threaded through the end as an escape channel.

And then I used the rest of some quick-set putty I had to make a press mold for the Leman Russ sponsons.

While they all set, I assembled the last three Russes. These ones have magents inside the tracks to accept sponsons.

And after a bit of casting, I have five sets! Three sets of heavy bolters, one of heavy flamers, and one of plasma cannon.

They all have magnets on the inside to attach to the tanks.

Panic wrote:Did you set the sponson magnets when the resin was soft?

No, drilled into them after. Though I made sure to fill the molds slightly under-level and then move them around to get it coating the sides, which makes the centre recessed (just like the real ones).

Also, TURRETS DONE.

I really couldn't be bothered to magnetise weapons on these, and just building tons of turrets was easier. The cast came out really well, though had to be filled in two parts to let air escape first before topping up. I then converted them with some big old weapons from a Robogear set.

I have ten in all, for four tanks! Three battle cannons, one old FW vanquisher, two punishers, one nova eradicator, one plasma annihilator, one old FW TL auto cannon, and an old metal demolisher.

The Punisher guns and Nova Eradicator are conversions from Robogear bits

And the Plasma Annihilator is an old Conversion Beamer

The old Demolisher kit is so front-heavy I had to weigh it down with coins on the bottom to get it to sit straight!

Great job with the sponsons and turrets, that gives you plenty of options to play with.

Thanks guys. I agree, just having loads of turrets is MUCH better.

So, while I was priming and then spraying the Leman Russ batch, I got bored and started AND FINISHED the next batch.

Artillery!

Three Basilisks, one FW Medusa and one old Griffon. These were much faster to assemble because they don't have any options or magnets. Most of the hulls were already built, so just a few repair jobs here and there.

Two of the ordnance pieces were missing their platforms, so I fabricated them some more out of plasticard and textured rivet-plate. Of course, all four ordnance pieces have their safety rails replaced with spikes because Chaos. This is the back of the medusa, with extended track guard because the track assembly work I must have done ten years ago was pretty terrible!

For some reason, this one has two left supports for the gun. Weird. I'm gonna make it work anyway, because none of the bits sites have any supports in stock.

And finally - the guns! I'm tempted to spray all these tonight too, and then spend Christmas week on an epic ten-tank production line. By the end of the week I could have a finished Armoured Company!

EDIT: Ok, I did it. Here's this week's work, all in beautiful pink.

I've decided to time all the different sections of this, so I can figure out how long I've got the painting process to take.

First, I spray highlighted all of the tanks with the pale pink colour, which took me 1.5 hours this morning. It's very quick when you've got the hang, just spraying softly round the edges and filling in an big armour plates.

After letting this dry for ten minutes, I spent a long time masking off all the pink areas so that I could spray the tracks and other metal bits silver. This took a while, but I hate painting tracks, so worth it! The actual spraying took about 20 mins, but the whole process was about 2 hours. So, 3.5 hours into painting and I'll finally get out the paintbrush!

Yesterday's progress. Went through and did all the base colours - probably the most laborious bit of actual painting, but at least they're done!

Probably spent around 4 hours in all painting silver, yellow, black, gold and various spot colours.

And then I used the airbrush to do a bit of early weathering on the longer barrels, and then spent an hour or so this morning applying transfers. The barrels were sprayed a little gold, then dark brown near the tip, then black around the end.

Next, to dig out the Micron Pens and start with the graffiti.

Ha! It's kind of a final test of what I've been trying all year - trying to get my painting time down further and further. I started this project with my first go at weathering and airbrushing, and as I use more and more weird chemicals and tools that aren't 'brush painting' it goes down more.

This afternoon I did the first stage of weathering. Graffiti using the airbrush and some brown and orange Sigma Micron pens, and then some rust and oil using Modelmates Dyes. First, up, the graffiti. The chaos symbols are deliberately quite light as I want them to get lost in the rest of the weathering. The Sigma Pens are used because, unlike normal fineliners, the varnish that goes on afterwards won't dissolve the ink.

Then I used the dyes to put some rust and oil grime on the metallic areas. These are water-based dyes, which you can rub off or move around afterwards with a wet cotton bud - so, kinda like the oil washes but not quite as pliable. They have quite a good 'sheen' to them, though, and are ridiculously easy to apply. Each of these tanks probably took me two minutes of wiggling the brush around the tracks, trying to be as random as possible.

The whole process took another three hours. Next, out with the sponges...

UPDATE: Sponging done this morning. Four colours in about an hour and a half, thanks to my fantastic new tool - foam brushes!!

First, Minitaire Saddle Brown over all of it, concentrated around the edges with the occasional big splurge to cover up earlier mistakes.

Than, much quicker passes with Coal, Bloody Earth and Model Air Steel to make it more interesting, concentrating on the same areas. The Steel, being much paler, helps to blend back in any areas that look too splotchy from the darker colours.

MORE UPDATES. Christmas Eve is nice and quiet for me, so I've got lots done. Everything is assembled and gloss varnished, and ready to start with the oil washes. I'll give it a few hours just to make sure the varnish is completely dry.

Excellent work on the tanks, and speedy too! Always good to see which tricks peeps use to cut down the time.

How do you find cleaning the foam brushes? Ive wondered a few times about picking some up, I tend to just use pieces I've torn off packing foam for sponging.

The gold, brown, black on the barrels is very effective, like that a lot

Yes, I hadn't tried the barrel thing before, and just looked at a couple of images online, and then gave it a go. It was actually really simple and seems to have achieved the right effect!

Regarding the foam brushes, I haven't tried to clean them - I saw them in an art shop the other day and, at 50p a brush, just assumed they were meant to be disposable! I did all my weathering in one go with one brush (now dead), but I reckon I could get two or three uses out of each one, trimming away more each time. I looked on eBay, and it's about £4 for 20. Before this I was using packing foam held between a set of pliers, but this was much faster and easier to manipulate.

TANKS!

So, I did the final stages of oil washing and blending over the end of Xmas Day and all today. The whole house smells of whit spirit, but I've now finished all the Leman Russes! The artillery section is done too, but I've got to make the crew before I photograph them.

I picked up some blue card, and colour matched a bit better, so these should be more accurate colour representations than the white photos. However, it looks to me like they're a bit crushed in levels. What do you think? Better or worse than the white?

Destroyer Tank Hunter

Then, the 'Command Tank' with the side skirts, here set up as a Demolisher and as a Vanquisher.

Then, the three regular tanks with swappable sponsons. First, as basic Leman Russ Battle Tanks.

Punisher

Eradicator

Exterminator

Executioner

That really confused me until I remembered that some of the graffiti chaos symbols are cyan! Yes, possibly a bad colour choice for the background, then. It makes them look like a bad colour key!

And yes, the plasma glow was the last thing I did before varnishing. A mix of the airbrush and the miniature ghost tints.

Since I'm on a tank-based roll, I thought I'd carry straight on with the next batch, fuelled slightly by my DCM Secret Santa gifts..

So, first, some crew. Twelve crew in all for all of the tanks, converted from a mix of flagellants, empire militia, anvil heads and some saxon-style guys given to me by ElderCaveman, along with some old rokkits Panic originally cast for his Grot Kan Wall.

Then, while I'm doing some regular guys, I thought I'd get a few more in - two Chaos Sigil bearers and five more Tallarns. The bearers are converted from some sort of Dark Elf guy and a Greek Philosopher I got in the Secret Santa from SinfulHero (I think). I actually have another twenty more Tallarns, but unlike the original batch, these guys actually have their heads attached. Which is a dilemma - do I chop off the heads of some pristine 90s minis to make them fit, or will they blend in as they are? These five are a test, to see if they blend in.

And the FINAL TWO TANKS! After which, the Armoured Company is done. Two Salamanders with magnetised weapons.

The Heavy Flamers needed a bit of work to move their mounting point further forward, so that both weapons have the same length behind the magnet point, and the crewman can stay in the same place.

And two more Chimera turrets I found, just to get them in use.

IN BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR!

Got everything finished (and more besides) - I have an armoured company! I also tried using a black background and completely manual camera settings, which actually looks a lot better and more 'accurate'. At some point, I might go through and do everything like this.

Ok. Here goes.

GRIFFON. God knows how many times I've repainted this - I bought this model when it was released in the 90s!

MEDUSA. The only one I've left the gun shield on, since it doesn't affect the height of the model.

BASILISK BATTERY. Three tanks, with A having the dodgy two-right-mountings. First, Tank A.

Tank B

Tank C

SALAMANDERS. Magnetised for Heavy Flamers or Autocannon.

I then finished the alternate weapon options for the other tanks - here is the Bane Wolf nozzle, and the two extra Chimera turrets.

Then, infantry. Here are five 'regular' Tallarns. I'm gonna have to see how well they fit in with the rest of the cultists before I decide if I'm gonna replace the heads on the other (unpainted) ones.

Here are two more Sigil Bearers - one converted from a Dark Elf and one from a greek philosopher I got in the DCM Secret Santa this year.

And, while waiting for various things to dry, I did a quick repaint of bit of my old Suicide Legion psykers to bring them in line with this army. New robes and gold bits.

And here's the whole lot together! Pretty good for a christmas project, with many thanks to the DCM Secret Santas for various crew and spiky bits. I now have a lot less stuff hanging around in bits and bags...

Started on a small batch of guys today. First, a few Dark Vengeance cultists I got in the Secret Santa. I've just done enough to finish my tray of three 'Cultist' squads with auto guns.

Then, converted some more DV Cultists into Enforcers! They all have Commissar-style heads from the old Warzone Imperial sergeants, and various flails and mauls.

And then made these guys as a test for my Mutant Rabble. I have loads of old Mantic ghouls and zombies lying around which are finally going to get some use, along with some Pig Iron gas mask heads.

Mini-batch done. I had a slight problem with a grainy white undercoat on a few of them, visible on the photos, but not really visible from table distance.

Here's the four DV guys - I now have a single KR tray containing three squads of 10 renegades with lasguns or autoguns, leader and heavy stubber. I can pop them in my Marine case whenever I want to use cultists

The Mutant Rabble were fun - thought I wanted to try out some outlandish mixed skin colours with the airbrush and it's hasn't really shone through. These guys are painted bright orange, then paler orangey/skin, then white. But, after the wash, it doesn't really look that different to the regular skintone?

The Enforcers also look good. Hopefully their dark hats will make them obvious on the tabletop. Apologies for the second photo, which seems to be more interested in the plasma pistol than the guy holding it!

Thanks guys - I've been doing a bit of random assembling over the last few weeks. When I get some more together I'll spray a whole bunch and start painting, but I'm enjoying building at the moment.

First, another 8 Berserkers. I still haven't painted the last ones I built, but maybe these will convince me. Really built from the dregs of the bit box!

And then 6 Renegade Sentinels, with bars on top. I'm going to use PVA and tracing paper to make some canvas covers so they can convincingly be armoured or unarmored.

And I picked up five more Terminators for £2 at a bring-and-buy, so I've bashed them together with any old spare terminator bits to make some regular combi-bolter guys. Together with my magnetised ones, this makes 12.

Ok, still building, building. I've decided to do a big batch of infantry to finish off all my regular renegade infantry. Here they are sprayed pink, ready to go.

As always, these are a mix of Cultists, Redemptionists, Tallarns and random cloaked guys. Once this is done, I should have one 'Traitor Guard' platoon of 3 x 10-man Cultists/Renegade squads built from the Tallarns, and then a second platoon of 3 x 20-man Renegade squads built from robed Necromunda/Cawdor/Cultist models.

I'm also including these brilliant second-edition Redemptionist models as 'Disciples' - good as a separate unit or as the Command HQ.

And these are the first test models for my Renegade Veterans - the base models are Warzone plastics with Cadian arms and recast heads from the 2ed Redemptionists.

The hot-shot lasguns are the base Cadian lasgun with Anvil Industry gunsights. The barrels have been extended using their Silencer parts, and the original lasgun tip stuck on the end of the silencer.

Ok, the Renegade Infantry are finally finished! This gives me one small platoon (which I can also use as Cultists) and one large platoon, plus a good group of leaders and command options.

Here's the small platoon - three 10-man squads of Cultists with a Heavy Stubber in each squad. They're all old Tallarn models with Al'Rahem as their Demagogue.

And here's the big platoon - three 20-man squads of Renegades. 20 with CC weapons, including three flamers and a sigil, 20 with Shotguns, including three meltas, and 20 with lasguns, including two grenade launchers and a sigil.

Some of the shotgun guys were converted from DV cultists and old Necromunda weapons to make up the numbers.

And here's some of the newer Necromunda Redemptionists, serving in my CC squad

And the final batch of loaders was completed for the Heavy Weapons teams, converted from some 28mm Persians

And finally, the Disciples - I'll mostly use these as an easily-identifiable Command Squad, hence their range of weapons and black hats. All new-model Redemptionists with the exception of the Tallarn auto cannon.

And here's them all packed - takes up half a KR Multicase along with the Enforcers and Psykers. The top two are the big platoon, the bottom left is the small platoon - all in one tray for easy transfer to the CSM case - and the bottom right is Disciples, commanders, psykers, etc...

Next project: READY FOR HERESY!!

Now that HH5: Tempest has been released, my Renegades will make a good Warp Cult army. I'm going to make a small Heresy-era Allied force of Word Bearers to go with them and make them look a bit more 30k-sh.

First up is this conversion I've been meaning to do for ages - a Space Crusade Dread converted into a Deredeo.

The initial construction involved cutting the legs at the backward knee joints and building them up onto this raised base, to get a bit more height.

I'll fill the gaps with detail once this section is totally dry. Here's what he looks like with his face on.

For weapons, I'll be converting these bulky Predator sponson bolters into some Anvillus Autocannon, and the Aiolos Launcher is made from some Drop Pod missile launchers.

Here's what he looks like dry-fitted together with blu-tack

Thanks guys - did a little work today and found these Ramshackle quad gun bits in the bits box - they'll need a bit of blending-in, but they look perfect for the Anvillus Autocannons.

And, since I'm not sure how big a Deredeo is, here's a size comparison to one of my regular Chaos Dreads...

A Deredeo is about the same height as a Contemptor Dreadnought if you excluded the giant missile-rape launchers from it.

Looking at comparison pics of the Contemptor to normal Dread, it looks like I'm about the right size, then. Much less bulky, but then so were all those Strife-era Deredeo chassis.....

Slow-going, but I've got the first ten Heresy Marines put together - a simple Tactical Squad.

These are assembled from various spare parts - FW MkIV bodies and arms that I got in a bitz sale a while ago, Anvil Industry legs and Maxmini Steam Knight helmets.

They'll have some 2ed backpacks and 2ed Chaos Bolters.

And here's one regular guy blue-tacked up so I can get a sense of what he'll look like when assembled.

I've also started on five WB Terminators, made from these old RT ones. Problem is, the RT bodies are quite small, so I've started a process of embiggening them to match.

Cuts around the groin to lengthen the top of the legs and put a bit of space in at the waist. This is what the embiggened one looks like next to the PA marine..

Another thing you can do is to put them on a more scenic base, utilizing the extra space available on the larger terminator base. It is amazing what an additional few millimetres can do to help. That's my 2p of unasked for advice. Happy Colonial Traitors day!

Thanks guys. Filling and sculpting work is all finished now - here they are with the pauldrons stuck on.

I had five complete metal ones, but it turned out that, way back in the 90s, I had mangled and chopped the heads of of a few of them for some random teenage attempt at a conversion. All fixable with the recast of a few bodies, and a rebuild/sculpt of the sergeants head from a resin Spartan helmet.

Unfortunately, I didn't have enough spare plastic Terminator arms, so I've used a lot of these Anvil Industries posable bionic arms. I guess they've just seen a lot of action!

End of the day, I've got all the airbrushing done. Pre-shaded grey and then the bodies given a couple of coats of Ghost Tint: Fresh Blood (basically a 'clear' paint).

The red is REALLY bloody shiny, but I'm not worrying too much at the moment as I usually gloss varnish before washing and then matt varnish after so it should be fine...

Post by: ArbitorIan

And they're done. The only red model left to do for the Heresy event is Zardu Layak, who I hope will be released in time. If he isn't, I'll have to convert something to represent him!

So first, a Tactical Squad. Anvil legs, FW arms, bodies and torsos, 2ed Chaos bolters, Maxmini heads. The Legion symbol is from the CSM transfer sheet with a bit of orange painted behind, and the Chapter badge is a combination of a Tau circle and a Cadian skull.

And five Terminators, made from some of the RT-era variant terminators, made bigger, and with Anvil arms and bolters and Maxmini pauldrons. XVII numerals are from the Cadian sheet.

And my rare early-model Deredeo Dreadnought. Space Crusade base model, embiggened and reposed, Drop Pod missile launchers, Ramshackle auto cannon mounted on Predator heavy bolter bodies.

No idea about the next report - we haven't done one all year!! I think Panic is very much into X-Wing at the moment, and we both get a bit more of a 40k fix at our local club, so finding the time to play big games and report them has been difficult!

Anyway, the next batch of painting for the Heresy tournament begins. I have three weeks till the tourney!

First, two Malcadors - one was bought as an Annihilator and one ages ago as a regular Malcador Battle Tank. In the tourney list, I want to use both as Annihilators, so I recast the Demolisher and built a second TL Las turret. Everything is magnetised, but I'm not going to paint any of the other options til after the tourney.

Then, four more Spawn, to boost my numbers up to 9. Three use Mantic Werewolves as a base model, and one is the old Scylla model - or at least the bits of it I could find!!

And the final BIG Levy squad - also to be used as my Mutant Horde in 40k. Made from Mantic ghouls and zombies, GW ghouls, skaven heads, various gas mask heads and all sorts.

Yeah, I've always wanted some Malcadors, and this Heresy event has been the perfect excuse.

Also, some of the side pieces were a bit miscast so Forge World are sending me another pair. Of course, miscast isn't really a problem in a Renegades army, so I'm planning to use them to convert up a Valdor - I mean, it's mostly just some Malcador sides and a massive gun, right?

Ok, also WIP - some Dreadclaw drop pods!

I finally found another use for the mold I used to make the Helldrake extra wings, and made some more to use as point Dreadclaw vanes. The centre is just a regular Drop Pod.

They're looking a bit spindly and breakable, so I've made this diagonal piece to fill in at the top of each vane and make it look a bit more structural. Eight more to cast, then gap filling and I'll finally be ready to paint everything!

Just about to do the report, but in the meantime, here's the photos of the new units.

First, I completed a 40-man Mutant Rabble to be my third heresy cultist squad. The models are a mix of Mantic Ghouls and Zombies and GW Ghouls with Skaven or gas-mask heads. The pistols are from Hasslefree.

I've done them in batches so that if I feel like fielding minimum squads I should have ten skaven-guys, ten orange-ghoul-guys, etc etc...

Then the two Malcadors - I had a problem with the gloss varnish on these so I couldn't remove as much of the wash as I liked - as a result, they look a bit more weathered than normal!

Then a full Aegis line, including an Icarus Lascannon made from an old Ramshackle engine plant and other bits.

And, of course, Zardu Layak to lead the Word Bearers - he arrived on Thursday and I left on Friday so this is his one-evening paint job!

Finally, a few Objective Markers

The next thing might actually be more red, not pink. Might get the final bits of the Word Bearers allies finished. I have the two Blade Slaves, a Rhino and a few more terminators left over, and three Maxmini jet bikes that could easily make a little support squad.

Then, I'll probably do a flyer batch - the second Dreadclaw and a couple of Arvus Lighters maybe...

Ok, my local game club (HATE CLUB in Bethnal Green) is running a Knight Joust this weekend, and I'm using is as an excuse to get this guy all made up!

Chaos Knight from Forge World - I've magnetised his elbows so I can make more weapons in future, but for now he'll just have the stock stuff.

Given that this is a big spraying job, I'm using it as an excuse to get some base layers down on a load of other walker-type models. First, the six Renegade Sentinels, now with GS 'canvas' covers so they can be Scouts or Armoured.

And then three old Space Crusade Dreads which I'm going to make into fire support dreadnoughts.

I'm planning to use these old Land Raider lascannons for them, but I need to recast a few first - this is the only one I have.

And, while I'm casting, I scored a fantastic haul of old 90s Chaos Daemons the other week: 2 Bloodthirsters, 48 Bloodletters, 16 Flesh Hounds, 2 Lords of Change, 22 Horrors, 11 Flamers, 5 Fiends of Slaanesh, Azazel, 1 Daemon Prince, a load of Chaos Warriors and Knights and a Khorne Berserker on a Juggernaut

All for £50! I've gone through the batch, sorting them into squads and getting rid of a few that I didn't need (wrong era Fiends, 1 Bloodthirster and 1 LoC).

This gives me enough Khorne to make a KDK army, but some of the Flesh Hounds were missing heads, frills and tails, so I've prepared some for casting - they're going to have shorter, straighter tails than the big scorpion-style ones for storage...

Thanks guys.

I made some progress on the painting. The Knight is up to all base colours down, and a little bit of the weathering done. i was hurrying this one to use in an event at the weekend (in which he mostly got speared by Lancers!)

Plus, all the basic spraying and masking done on the Sentinels and Dreads..

i'm planning that the Dreads are used as fire support (since they have no CC weapons) but unsure what to arm them with. They're definitely gonna have old SC-style missile launchers, but Lascannons or Reaper Autocannons for the other weapon??

Thanks! Yeah, I'm looking forward to including them. It's just the weapons I'm trying to decide about. I don't have three of the original SC Lascannon bits, but I'm not even sure if Missile Launcher/Lascannon is worth it.

This is what the model originally came with:

I have three of the assault cannons - maybe I could modify them to look like Reaper Autocannons and have each one with a ML and a reaper? Not sure....

FINALLY got some stuff finished! These have been sitting there for months. I also got the Knight done, but I don't have a big enough lightbox to photograph it, so I'll wait til I'm next at Panic's house to take photos!

First, two squads of 8 Khorne Berserkers - using bits from various Chaos sprues, plus some metal Terminator axes and some old Chaos Warrior heads

And then the six Sentinels, magnetised with Lascannon, Flamer and Multilaser weapon options.

Found time to take some photos of the Chaos Knight! The arms are magnetised, so eventually I'll get around to making some alternate weapon options...

First, a ton of models!

Most of these are Tallarns with a few basic redemptionists and cawdor mixed in.

Then some converted cultists to boost the shotgun squad

And some special weapon additions - meltaguns and flamers and a third vox-caster.

MORE GOONS!

Thanks for the comments. I've had a busy day of assembly. First, I've put together about 30 artillery loaders/gunners from various sources. Some were headless Mordians which I've shaves the shoulder boards from. Some are converted from cultists.

I've then started assembling artillery. First was two Thudd Guns made from Mantic models. I've going to replace their tracks with wheels from Zinge industries.

I had to cut a Tallarn gunner in half to replace the Forge Father that was on there!!

And then, this is a custom Rapier, made from a couple of Mantic track pieces and a centre part made from various bits. I've got loads of the Mantic tracks from a bits trade, and so I've recast my custom centre piece a load of times.

I'm going to magnetise various weapons, but I'll be using these Zinge guns as my laser destroyers.

Here's some sample assemblies, with the Zinge cannons and some old Space Crusade Conversion Beamers.

MOAR UPDATES! It's been a busy weekend.

I started on some Earthshaker Platforms using these old 35mm flak gun kits. A friend has some left over from a project, so with a bit of recasting, they were complete.

I then took the cannons off of my Basilisks and magnetised the inside of the mountings and the sides of the cannons. I've been meaning to do this for a while as it makes them easier to store!

This is what they look like assembled. I might put some Basilisk guns shields on to bulk them out a bit.

And finally, I cut up and reposed two quad-guns. There will fit in the same size slot as the Earthshakers, allowing me to use the tanks as Hydras if I want...

So, the tournament is over - I'm busy writing up a great big report/review of the whole thing.

It took a lot to get ready. Here's my girlfriend conscripted into movement-tray-making duty, and the whole lot ready for a varnish!

More photos to come!

Wonderful to have a supportive SO. I married mine (not that I'm suggesting you do the same... but it has made my life much easier).

I think she's been wanting an excuse to try out painting for a while - movement trays were a good start, I think!

-----------

Here's the models completed for the tournament. The Baneblade will come later, as I need to do a load more detail work before it's 'done'.

First, I built around 30 Artillery Crew from a mix of Cultists, Flagellants and some old Mordian heavy weapons crew that I had no weapons for.

Here they are crewing the Earthshaker Platforms, converted from Tamiya 35mm flak guns.

And some more, crewing the Rapiers. The guns are from Zinge Industries and the tracks from Mantic

Then, I painted up enough extra guys to organise them into 20-man units for use in Heresy. Each 20-man unit is identifiable on the field and has specific weapons. The first two squads are based on Tallarns and have lasrifles.

The next three are based on Cultists, Cawdor and Redemptionists. One squad has lasrifles and autoguns, the second has shotguns, and the last has close combat weapons.

I also got a few more Melta and Flamer guys done

And finally, these are actually going to be used as a Frostgrave war band, but are painted the same so that they can be drafted into the Cult when required. This is a unit of the old Monks of the Red Redemption, a classic Dogs of War unit for WHFB.

I've also posted my review of the London 40k Grand Tournament here - it was a fun weekend, as all my opponents were great, but the event itself was a bit of a disappointment.

Cracking stuff (hur-hur. Earthshaker cannon puns!)

Do those bases make much easier, Arbitor? Looks a bit tricky around the buildings-movement wise.

Actually the movement trays made things MUCH faster, provided we were both up for a bit of abstraction when i came to piling in or moving in buildings. When the squads became small enough I'd remove them from the trays.

However, that's also probably because the terrain at the event was so sparse and gakky. On a textured board with lots of terrain they might become more trouble than they're worth!

Wow. As a disciple of Slaanesh myself your army makes me insanely happy and inspired. Amazing conversion work!

I love the Mohawked Chaos Lord! I'm wondering where the head is from it looks so familiar. (It looks very similar to a dire avenger)

Read the battle report, felt bad about one of your match ups though I'd of still played.

Your army is gorgeous and the artillery will be a welcome addition I'm sure to your army.

Thanks. It originally started out as only slaw mesh, but I think it's spreading out a bit now. The head is from the Fantasy Slaanesh chaos Lord on that big snakey thing!

----------------------------------

The Renegades are getting more reinforcements. I decided to do a drive on my final few Superheavies and big kits. First, a Gorgon transporter. This was a bloody nightmare to put together - you can certainly tell it's an older kit. Lots of hot water required!

Then, a Thunderbolt fighter which is probably more use in 30k than 40k. This was a beautifully simple kit. It also has 'hooks' on the fuselage where the wings attach, which means, if you assemble it right, it can be disassembled for storage and no magnets needed!

And finally, I had a Malcador from Forge World which had some small damage to the tracks, and forge world sent me a new set. In the end, I was in such a rush that I just fixed the damage myself and carried on (covering it with weathering) but I still have the replacements. I'm using them to make a Valdor / Infernus conversion. It has a new body made from a couple of old Leman Russ hulls, and I'll make magnetised sponsons, weapons and an optional tow-tank.

I like the look of the T-bolt, even if it is amazingly blocky. Uncommonly nice of them to make the wings that way.

Yeah, really handy!

Did some more work on the Valdor/Infernus conversion. Central structure is all built and I've started on the Valdor gun.

The gun is actually based around a pencil which pushes into the cotton spool I've used for the capacitor, so I'll do another pencil-based flame weapon once I've got some big flamer ends. Neither of these are nearly the size and scale of the real Valdor gun, but they're at least e same length for sight line purposes.

Both tanks have WW1 style protruding sponsons, but I wanted mine to match the sponsons on my Malcadors, so I built some more out of plasticard. The right one is permanent but the left one pops out as the Valdor has power cabling here instead of the sponson. I'll build another insert for when it's being a Valdor.

What did you use for the barrel tip? I "circumcised" my venator because it looked like a giant penis. Looking for something like that the finish the gun off.

Cool stuff. I'm impressed with the wings on the T-bolt and how they hook.

Nice modelling skills to, those sponsons will look great.

The very tip is from a Necrons Gauss Cannon. I've actually removed mine as it was looking a bit fiddly.

More work on the Valdor - I played a game and realised it was much, much smaller than the 'real model' and comically less bulky than my Malcadors. So, I've been working on bulking it out. I think it's now actually taller than it should be but at least that won't be a problem in a tournament.

I then did some work on the guns for the Gorgon - they come with stubbers but I want the option for LASCANNONS so I built this out of some plasticard and the base part of the original stubbers.

And finally, a test for some counts-as Solar Auxilia. I've had tons of these Warzone plastics around for years so good to find some use for them! Warzone Imperial Trencher bodies and Rotor Cannons, Skitarii heads and really old Stormtrooper packs.

Ok, Dakkanauts, I need some opinions. I've been having a rethink on how to build the Auxilia now that Anvil have released their amazing Void Armour Torsos.

So, I have tons of old Warzone plastics I'd like to use in some way, but there are a few ways I could go with this. What do you prefer, both for look and for proportions?

A - Whole Warzone model with a Skitarii head and spare old backpack. This is as in the previous post.
B - Warzone legs and arms, with an Anvil Industry gothic void armour body.
C - The same as above, but I've left the belt on the legs, making him taller.
D - Catachan 'fatigue' legs, Anvil body, Warzone arms (I got better at proportioning the arms in this one).

Interesting choices, I personally like the D option quite well, shortly followed by B. A could be pretty nice for special weapons...

I probably made this more confusing than it needs to be by having A as the only one with a rotor cannon. Suffice to say, whatever body/legs combination is chosen, both volkites and rotor cannon will be present!

-------------------

Made more progress on the new vehicles. Airbrushing and base colours done, transfers applied, first passes of weathering done with Modelmates dyes and some rust/soot spraying. Next, the sponges!!

The Valdor is looking a bit more realistically scaled now it has the taller canopy. I also have a ton of magnetised weapons ready - these are all the sponson and hull options for the Gorgon (lascannon, Heavy Bolters and Heavy Flamers), Malcadors (sponson Autocannon, hull lascannon and multi-lasers, turret Battlecannon) and Valdor (sponson lascannon and Heavy Flamers)

Solar Auxilia solved!! What games workshop models already bloody wear armoured spacesuits?? GENESTEALER BLOODY HYBRIDS!

Made of plastic, easily available, already look a bit like Solar Auxilia, and the slightly tattered, hunched look works for Traitors.

Still deciding on a backpack...

Thanks! Yup, much easier than all the other versions. I'm sure I'll find a use for the Warzone plastics one day!

So, everything is ready to go and about to be packed for The Imperial Truth's narrative weekender. Here's the army!

Lots of bits completed. First the little stuff - here's the squad of Solar Auxilia with rotor cannons.

And then I finished a lot of new weapons for the Malcadors. Battle cannon turrets, autocannon sponson weapons and lascannons and multi-lasers for the hull point.

Now, everything else is so big that it doesn't fit in my lightbox! So, apologies if these are a little blurry. First, the Baneblade I completed the other month, but hadn't photographed.

Then, the Valdor conversion, which I'll build an optional Infernus cannon for at some point.

This is the Gorgon all done. Las cannon sponsons are on at the moment, but I have heavy bolter and heavy flamer options.

And the Thunderbolt. Dirty pink on top, but it has a pale grey underside to make it harder to hit!

So, the event is over and much fun was had by all. I spend the weekend at Firestorm Games in Cardiff, attending the Takaan-Reva: Drowned in Flames event organised by Greg Dann of The Imperial Truth podcast. Lots of friendly faces, a fair amount of beer drunk and many games (or half-games, more on that later) were played.

The Army

Last year, I took a horde of Warp Cult goons to play my first games of Heresy, supported by some Word Bearers infantry and Daemons. Alas, that was way to many models to fit in a game, and I hardly ever finished one. This time, I cut the numbers of goons and filled in the space with as many big tanks as I could. The points had gone from 2250 last year to 3000 this year, but I'd cut to only having to set up three 20-man squads on the table, and played a few practise games which seemed to go pretty fast. Here's the list..

Primary Detachment - Imperialis Militia & Cults

*HQ 1: Force Commander, Provenance: Cult Horde, Provenance: Tainted Flesh - 120
*TROOPS 1: Militia Infantry Squad (x20), Auxilia Pistols - 50 (with DT 1)
*TROOPS 2: Militia Infantry Squad (x20), Auxilia Rifles - 50
*TROOPS 3: Inducted Levy Squad (x20), Auxilia Pistols - 40
*TROOPS 4: Inducted Levy Squad (x20), Auxilia Pistols - 40
*TROOPS 5: Inducted Levy Squad (x20), Auxilia Pistols - 40
*DT 1: Auxilia Gorgon Heavy Transporter, Twin-linked Lascannons, Lascannon Sponsons - 315
*FAST 1: Auxilia Thunderbolt Heavy Fighter, Ground Tracking Auguries - 210
*HEAVY 1: Auxilia Malcador Heavy Tank, Lascannon Sponsons, Hull Demolisher Cannon, Turret Battlecannon, Siege Armour - 295
*HEAVY 2: Auxilia Malcador Heavy Tank, Lascannon Sponsons, Hull Demolisher Cannon, Turret Twin-linked Lascannon, Siege Armour - 295
*HEAVY 3: Auxilia Battle Tank Squadron, 3 x Leman Russ Battle Tanks - 420
*LOW: Auxilia Baneblade Super-heavy Tank, Pintle Autocannon, Side Sponsons - 595

Allied Detachment - Solar Auxilia

*HQ 2: Tank Commander - 55 (with HEAVY 4)
*TROOPS 6: Auxilia Infantry Tercio: Veletaris Storm Section (x10), Rotor Cannons - 115, Aegis Defense Line - 50
*HEAVY 4: Valdor Tank Hunter, Sponson Flamer - 300

TOTAL - 3000

The Event

The event was a 50-player, 5 round, 3000pt narrative Heresy event. The players were divided into Traitors and Loyalists, and each team had a small group of generals. There were five custom scenarios playable, each one having five tables set up specifically for that scenario. Each round, the generals could assign their team members to specific scenarios, at which point the team member placed their name-card face down on one of the tables. When all the cards were down, they were flipped, and people found out who they were facing. This way, armies could be assigned to missions their generals thought were appropriate, but nobody ever know exactly who they would be facing until the cards were flipped. It was a really good, fun system, though the organisation took a bit of time each round.

Furthermore, each mission gave a special bonus rule to the faction that won the most games of it. So, if the Traitors won the most 'secure the spaceport' missions, then all the Traitor armies gained a free orbital bombardment in the next game. One of these bonuses forced the opposing General to lay some of his cards down face-up so the winner could pick armies to counter. All great fun. In addition, there were a couple of Knights Errant-style characters which each general could give to a player each round for free. Named characters and primarchs were allowed, but it was recorded when they were killed in-game, and penalties applied to them if they were killed too often. I think, by the end of the tournament, Curze had been killed so much he had -2 WS and BS, and had to re-roll successful hits in combat.

Game 1 - Blackshields

My first game was against my fellow HATE-clubber Willard, with his Blackshield infantry force. 100 marines running at me, with a few Rapiers in support and some Castellans stomping around the middle. Willard also had 'The Ghost', the special Loyalist character.

I made my first mistakes quite early on, setting up a lot of objective on the side of the table i was standing near, only for Willard to win the roll and choose that deployment zone. The super-heavies did a great job of pie-plating marines, but I was penned in a bit by the number of tanks, and couldn't quite get to objectives all game. The Blackshields also held the centre with some Torrent flamers that made light work of any approaching cultists. Before we knew it, the half-hour bell had rung, and we were only on turn three. It was clear I wasn't going to win on objectives, so I rounded all tanks on The Ghost, hoping to kill him and force a draw. However, with a squad of marines as extra wounds, he survived the combined firepower of the Baneblade, Malcador, Valdor and Leman Russes, and remained at the end of turn four with one wound remaining. First loss to the perfidious Loyalists!!

However, it was a great, fun game, with lots of cinematic moments - one black shield even managed to one-shot the Thunderbolt the turn it arrived with a single Flakk missile!

Game 2 - Shattered Legions

My second game was against a Shattered Legions force of Blood Angels and Imperial Fists. The Imperial Fists section was mostly quad-launchers assisted by a Siege Breaker, and two Deride dreads, set up on the board at the start of the game. The Blood Angels force dropped in with pods, and consisted of Terminators and Dreadnoughts. Although I lost the first game, the Traitors won overall, and so I had various deployment advantages, and selected my deployment zone well, starting in a corner and castling up as is usual against pod armies. We both rolled the same Warlord trait - pinning three enemy units, but the only unit I had that could be pinned was the Veletaris, and they passed their test. However, my opponent had worse luck and failed his test with most of his artillery, meaning he was without any firepower in the first turn.

I spent my entire first turn destroying a most of the quad-launchers at long range before the Drop Pods came in. He was forced to drop right in front of me (all those goons take up space in the backfield) but dropped Dreadclaws and Dreadnought pods so that he could stay inside, which forced me to stay still and spend the next turn blowing up Drop Pods. I managed to take out the closest pods and kill one of the Terminator units inside, and just as I was getting ready to start my advance and move forward (i.e when all the pods had arrived) the game ended on Turn 3! It was an cumulative-objectives game, and I had randomly held one through the first few turns, so I won, but it felt very incomplete. I never got to the point where I would move forward, and he never got to the point t where the things in the pods could start moving around and doing anything!

Game 3 - Iron Hands

The third game was against an Iron Hands army with a scary deathstar unit - Ferrus Manus with a bunch of Terminators in a Kharybdis Assault Claw, which dropped right in front of my lines in the first turn! He supported this with some completely tooled-up Spartan and Land Raiders with more terminators and tactical marines.

It was Hammer and Anvil setup, with staggered objectives, so I had a little more room for manoeuvre and spent the entire first turn's firepower to blow up the Kharybdis and assault the contents with some goon squads. This combat lasted the entire game, with Ferrus and first some Terminators, later some Dreadnoughts fighting off endless cultists as I poured more units into the combat. I never really got a 'good' charge off with a full unit, so every turn I would score 1 wound on Ferrus, and every time he would fail his save, then regenerate it. On the other side of the table, the Spartan proved really difficult to kill - my Valdor was on the wrong side for it, and most of my other weapons had a hard time getting through the flare shield. In the end, he managed to destroy my Baneblade with it!

The game, again, ended early. We only got to turn three, and it was in a situation where it came as a surprise to both of us, and he probably would have done different things if he had known. So again, only half a game played and another win but not a 'real' one.. :/

Game 4 - Solar Auxilia

The next day came, and my fourth game was a rematch against Joe and his Solar Auxilia, whose Infernus wiped me out last year. This time, he had less in the way of troops, but still a lot of quad-mortars and Leman Russes, and a Stormlord! The army was quite tricksy, stacking multiple abilities to help it along. One of the things that was particularly effective was to deploy everything behind defence lines and then choose the Shrouded warlord trait, so everything had 2+ saves in the first turn! Scary. I made a few mistakes in deployment which mean that my Leman Russes were a bit useless all game, and he took out the Valdor first turn with his Mutli-laser and Volikite Russes. I also spent the first couple of turns attempting to blow up vehicles before realising that, as another cumulative objective game, I just needed to kill the infantry!

Cue a couple of turns of rushing EVERYTHING forward to get as many points as possible before the end of the game in one turn, all the cultists disembarking from the Gorgon held four of the five objectives. We really rushed through the last few turns and still only managed to get to Turn 4, but once everything was in the open it was a bit of sitting duck and my gamble failed - Joe managed to destroy enough that I couldn't contest his objectives and won by a couple of points. It was another fun game, though - the Gorgon being seemingly invulnerable for a few turns - his Lighting being combat-interdicted by my Thunderbolt. Lots of cinematic moments.

Game 5 - Raven Guard

The final game was Hammer and Anvil again, against fellow HATEr Andy's Raven Guard. Corax was leading a squad of super-assaulty jump guys, supported by Grav-rapiers and drop-podding Terminators and Dreadnoughts. Again, I castled up behind the wall to suffer the first wave of pods, and things seemed to be going well. Corax spent a few turns in combat with some cultists, with more waves to follow, and I threw everything at destroying the pods and their Terminator/Dreadnough payload. Flamers appeared in the second turn and burned through more goons, but then my flank moved forward and managed to wipe out a good third of the army with marine-killing AP2/3 pie-plates/

Everything seemed like it might go well, but then the game ended at the end of TURN TWO! Crazy, considering we had relatively few goons left on the table and his army was so elite. This turned out to be a win for Raven Guard (Relic objectives) but we never got to find out what would really happen.

Results

So, the Loyalists overall won the event, and I made two wins and three losses, though a fair few of those felt a bit unfair as we never got to time. The event was great fun, with lots of spot prizes (I won one for having a super-heavy destroyed first!) and lots of good cheer from all involved. The narrative elements meant that a lot of the games were a light regardless of winning or losing, and no individual points or scores were kept from game to game, so nobody could 'win' the event.

The only big problem I encountered was the lack of time. The event pack allowed 2h45 for each game, but in reality a fair amount of this was eaten up by the process of allocating tables and then explaining through the army with your opponent. I think we maybe got two hours real 'playing' time out of each game, for two 3000pt Heresy armies. All my games were played pretty fast (I'm a bit of a tournament veteran, so no 'thinking time' for me!), but I still never managed to get past turn four. I think this was even worse than last year, when I was playing a true 'horde' army at 2250pts. Many other players seemed to have the same problem, and many others were fine, but there's a huge difference in play time between a 30-model elite Legion army and a 100-model Militia or Auxilia army. Speaking to other players, plenty managed to squeeze in a Turn 5, but I'm not sure what proportion of games actually went to a full six turns.

Also, they'd really benefit from a projector or whiteboard or something - there were a lot of special rules each round and though they were announced over the mic, but the time people had done their allocations, revealed their cards, set up and were ready to go, everyone had forgotten what they were!!

I'd definitely go again as it was lots of fun, but it seems that the format effectively rules out taking anything other than a relatively elite army (which pretty much rules out Imperialis Militia entirely). I'd happily go back to 2250, or even play less games over the weekend (since it's a Narrative event, this would be fine). If the event stayed the same, I think I'd end up just taking a tank company, or Word Bearers or something similar that plays really fast!

Here's some photos of some of the lovely armies:
