Khorne's Eternal Hunt - The World Eaters' 4th assault company: I LIVE. I HUNGER. @ 2012/02/27 12:55:07

Post by: KrautScientist

Hey everyone,

after a longer hobby hiatus, I got back into 40k in late 2010, when my cousin Andy gave me a box of Chaos Space Marines for Christmas. After toying around with the idea of building a Word Bearers army, I was ultimately drawn back to my World Eaters.

I'll be showcasing my work on my World Eaters army in this thread. The fluff behind my army is that they're the remnants of the 4th assault company, led by former Captain Lorimar. In contrast to much of the rest of the legion, they have managed to stay together as a fairly coherent fighting force, dubbing themselves "Khorne's Eternal Hunt". Instead of spilling blood indiscriminately, they are always looking for the most powerful opponents. It is only by taking down worthy prey that they in turn may prove themselves worthy in the eyes of Khorne - at least, that's what they think.

While my army's a fairly standard World Eaters force on the tabletop, this slight readjustment in their background gives me the opportunity to portray them as slightly more interesting in the fluff. The whole "crazed madmen" thing really doesn't sit too well with me - I think the World Eaters were much cooler when they were also portrayed as honourable, if somewhat arrogant, warriors. One of the coolest bits of fluff ever (in the 2nd edition Codex Ultramarines, IIRC) had an Ultramarines officer (might have been Calgar himself) earn a salute from a World Eaters champion for his prowess in battle. What an awesome idea ;-)

Anyway, about the first thing I did when getting back into 40k was to paint up a bunch of conversions I had done almost a decade ago, in order to settle on a new colour recipe for my army.
This was the result:

I built them using Ork Boy arms and bits from the old mutation sprue, originally intending them to serve as Possessed, back when there were no official models. Compared to the more recent, over the top plastic kit, these guys admittedly don't look nearly Possessed enough So I end up using them as normal Berserkers as often as not. I'm also not a fantastic painter, as you can well see. Anway, these were my first step on the way back into 40k. There's more to follow

Thanks for looking!

A short while after getting back into 40 and painting my first minis in about a decade (see above), I managed to buy an old Chaos Space Marine army box off ebay for a pretty low price. The only caveat was that these were the "older" CSM plastic models, released before the slight redesign 2007. But since I intended to kitbash and convert everything anyway, this was not a problem.

A defiler kit was part of the set as well, and while I knew I could use one in my army for heavy fire support (and also for psychological reasons), I wasn't that thrilled with the model. It seemed slightly...unwholesome to me.

Fortunately, I stumbled upon Amaximus' fantastic defiler conversion on http://kxmxb.blogspot.com/2011/01/defiler-almost-done.html and used this as a template for my own conversion, with a couple of differences (some of them deliberate, some simply due to my limited skills). Here's what I ended up with:

Since this was my most involved vehicle conversion up to that point, I was a bit scared of cutting apart such an expensive kit, but it pretty much worked out as planned.

Me being a rather average painter, this thing really wasn't hat much fun to paint I forced myself to get it finished, though, because I really wanted to use it in a number of campaign games, and there was no way I'd be able to play with it without having it completely assembled (which, in turn, required that I paint all the different sub-assemblies).

All in all, I'm fairly pleased with the model, although it has been performing pretty unevenly up to now...
Anyway, what do you think?

Hmm, it seems that nobody has anything to say I guess I'll just keep talking to myself then...

I have wanted to convert a Chaos Dreadnought for a very long time. However, while there are no less than four different Dread kits for loyal marines, Chaos players are still stuck using the metal model from the early 90s. And while the design is obviously a matter of taste (I think it really hasn’t aged all that well…), what really kills the model for me (apart fom the hefty price tag) is the fact that it’s metal and thus fairly difficult to convert. There’s the awesome Forgeworld models, sure. But I’m not going there. That way, madness lies…

I am pretty sure that a new plastic kit will be released once the next Chaos Space Marine Codex hits, but I've never been a very patient person, so why wait til then?

The good news is that the loyal kits are all plastic and allow for easy conversion. So while looking at the Furioso kit, I felt that this was the way to go. Thus began the saga of Marax the Fallen.

I knew right from the start that I wanted to try a few things with my first dread conversion: First of all, I wanted to avoid the “angry refridgerator” look of the standard loyal dread. I would try to achieve this, I would use a head from the new Khorne juggernauts: I’d been planning on doing that ever since both the Dread and the Juggernaut were only available in metal. The dread would be close combat first and foremost, so I wanted to use the Furioso’s CC arms, perhaps spruced up with chainswords for claws or something of the kind. And lastly, I would use a careful selection of (chaos) bits to make the dread look the part and tie it in with the rest of my force.

With these guidelines in mind, I made a first mockup of the model:

The addition of the juggernaut head proved to be instant win! A bit from the defiler kit was used to mask the original sarcophagus. And since you can never have enough skulls and chains, I added a bit from the chaos vehicle sprue. I wanted to go for a fairly static pose, with the dread taking a moment in the midst of battle to scream out its rage. I also added chainsword blades instead of the standard lightning claws.

Unfortunately, there were some problems with the initial design: The chainblades, while seeming such a good idea, proved to be far too long and ended up looking pretty goofy, especially when pointing downwards. The skullchain seemed a bit too clunky for my taste. And the pose, while looking pretty cool from the front, was kind of weird when seen from the back, with the dread’s torso at an awkward angle. I would obviously have to make some changes, but I was definitely getting there.

So, that was my first step in converting a Chaos Dread. I*ll post my next steps soon. Thanks for looking!

Its looking great. As for not being a good painter, The models look good. They are even better knowing that this is a table top army and not just an army in a case some where. The dread is really coming along, I can't wait to see where it goes from here. The only issue i have with Chaos dreads, Is the fact that chaos should be getting a new plastic model... And i don't know what it will look like. But other than that, I love the conversions, and the paint job. So keep it up. Can't wait to see more.

do those chainblade arms also come equipped with multi-metla or flamers and that kinda thing? might be a bit hard to model them on with a lot of chopping

Thanks for the kind words, guys, and welcome to the party ;-)

@ PapaPiggy: You're absolutely right! It's a shame that there's been no new Chaos Dread for all those years, although I'm quite sure that will change before the year is out.

@ Speaking of the chainblades: I really abandoned that idea as soon as I realised how long they were. It looks kind of goofy when they are almost touching the ground, so I didn't even have to figure out how to combine the long blades with another weapon. Eventually I went back to "regular" claws, but you'll see that in my next post.

Man oh man, I hope you stick with that head, it looks awesome. I certainly wish I had the bitz around to make something like that.

(I still have one un-used Dread Chassis... hmm...)

I do think the torso could be angled more foreward... which means your neck is going to have to be chopped and adjusted a bit. But I can see by what you have so far that you probably have the motivation and skill to make it work.

I'd like to see what comes of it!

I did improve the pose, since I noticed that the one shown in my first WIP pictures looks a little off. So just wait 'til the next update - I hope you'll be pleasantly surprised

@ Biohazard: I discovered the Guitarasmus thread only when my own Dread was already finished, but I agree that his model is simply fantastic! Love your thread as well! The loyal Dread kits certainly are a great base for Chaos conversions!

KrautScientist, you work is very nice, and I think you're on a good way to make something awesome with this dread!
If i can make a suggestion, take a look at Tipios' dread blog:

He found interesting way to make chainfists and to add skull chains to a dread.

Joe,

awesome, thanks for the link! You know, this is precisely why I love Chaos so much from a modeling perspective: It gives you so many cool options of taking existing kits and transform them into something that may serve the ruinous powers

I sincerely hope that the new models that will probably be released alongside a new Codex will not make Chaos players around the world (myself included) too lazy! Kitbashing models because there's no viable official one really is very enjoyable, after all!

I love where you're going with the Khorne dread. Your composition makes the creature look kind of feral, and less clunky or robot-like than the basic dread. I'm looking forward to watching him take shape.

Hey everyone,

A small update today. While we're waiting for the Dread to get in better shape, why not look at another completed model?

The officers of my army, in keeping with the force’s organisation as a hunting party, are called “Huntmasters”. Each of these individuals is a fearsome veteran of a thousand wars as well as a resourceful and merciless hunter. Once a Huntmaster has chosen his prey, he will not relent until he has either run it down or perished in the attempt.

Building character models is one of my greatest enjoyments, so this piece of fluff gives me the perfect excuse to construct many colourful characters (a lot more than I’ll ever realistically be using on the tabletop, to be honest).

One of the first conversions in this vein was Huntmaster Bardolf. He leads the normal, footslogging troops into battle and serves as a commander in small to medium games of 40k. This is him:

So, what do you think?

Alright, here's the next step in the evolution of my Chaos Dread:

So I knew that I wanted the dread to look like it was screaming in rage. While the first version of the pose definitely achieved this, it made the connection between torso and lower body look somewhat funny. So I readjusted the model’s pose to be a bit more crouched:

I also added a couple of bits to achieve the typical chaos look: a pair of dragon heads from the chaos vehicle sprue, a small Khorne icon and two shields from some OOP Warriors of Chaos. And the spine of an old Fantasy skeleton horse. I have absolutely no idea where the skullchain dangling between the Dread’s legs originally came from, but it looked cool, so I used it too.

I also decided to use the original lightning claws instead of chainblades. Their shorter length resulted in the model looking far more balanced.

In the pictures, the model is still missing the integrated Boltgun and flamer for his arms, but apart from that, all that remained were a couple of minor tweaks. I also filed off all the remaining Blood Angels iconography, and the model was ready for priming. I'll be posting the completed model soon.

Thanks for looking, C&C always welcome!

Thanks a lot, Biohazard! Glad you like the new pose! While I still think the old version looks kinda cool from the front, this one is a good compromise so that it looks reasonably good from every angle.

Once again, a small distraction to kill some time until the Dread is completed

After I had built my first squad of Raptors, I realised that I had one more Maxmini jump than I needed – a perfect excuse to build yet another Chaos Lord. Then, by lucky chance, I happened upon Winterdyne’s fantastic Chapter Master conversion (http://blog.winterdyne.co.uk/2011/06/sanguinary-phalanx-chapter-master-done.html). I was really blown away by the model and wanted to make an evil version for my World Eaters. That was the birth of Lord Charun, Master of the Harriers. After a bit of cutting and glueing, this was where I ended up:

It’s easy to see where Winterdyne’s model inspired my take on Charun, although I had to make some slight alterations due to the differences in parts. I wanted the Lord to have a daemon weapon, so I used the sword of a Bloodletter from the Bloodcrusher kit. The head is one of my favourites and comes from the Fantasy Warriors of Chaos. The shield is a recurring motif in my army and comes from the Chaos Marauders. Here’s some more pictures:

I wanted Charun to look decidedly different from his fellow officer Bardolf: Where the latter looks like he’s slowly but purposefully advancing, I wanted to make Charun look like he was highly mobile and lusting for battle.

Thanks for looking! Comments very welcome!

you can rest assured that more content about my INQ 28 activities is on the way. The truth will out ;-) I just have to be a bit economical with my stuff so that I don't post it all at once. Because then I will have to work much harder to find material for my posts, and then everything will turn into hard work and that would suck

Anyway, I am very proud that so many great INQ 28 modelers like my models, so I would be stupid not to show more of them, here on Dakka and on my blog. All in due time!

@badgerman95: Hmm, let me see: The legs are straight from the Fantasy Warriors of Chaos, yes. I cut off the upper body and replaced it with a regular CSM toso. The arms are a little more complicated: They were spliced together from regular CSM upper arms, very old Warriors of Chaos plastic arms and the hands from the new Warriors of Chaos, IIRC. Although, looking back now, it's probably possible to get a virtually identical result with much less cutting involved

@GiraffeX: Thanks, man! You've got some great World Eaters stuff yourself! I love your Vindicator! Using that Ogre Kingdoms cannon was brilliant. I might have to steal that idea sooner or later...

Alright, everyone: Here's the update on my Chaos Dread:

I have to admit that I was kind of scared by the prospect of having to paint this model: I had never painted a Dread before, and I had found the task of painting my Defiler to be very exhausting. But I wanted to use a completed Dread in a game, so I forced myself to get to work.

I’ve stated before that I am – at best – an okay painter. Still, painting is not really my favourite hobby activity. And while I like looking at completed models well enough, the way there often proves to be a chore. To make things even worse, the model forced me to work in multiple sub-assemblies (lower body, upper body and both arms), which I hate. But had I glued everything together in advance, I would never have been able to get the thing painted. So, did it work out okay?

Without further ado, I give you: Marax the Fallen.

You may have noticed that I added another bit or two, for example the bones on his right shoulder (from the Kroot kit). I thought it would make a nice trophy, in addition to supporting the position of the model’s arms.

I also added a bit from the Ogre Kingdoms to symbolise the World Eaters’ legion badge. This way, the left shoulder slightly resembles a Marine’s shoulderpad in that it shows the legion’s heraldry. That particular bit is also really great for World Eaters icons, vehicles or even Terminator storm shields!

Contrary to what I was expecting, the model was a joy to paint! The slightly larger scale compared to infantry models was a blessing and made painting really relaxing. I was able to finish Marax in a single day, without ever getting fed up with him.

Of all the conversions I have done, Marax has been drawing the most positive comments from people at the FLGS. And indeed, I am quite proud of how the model turned out! On the tabletop, you really don’t want to have that thing reach your lines

Some timer after I completed this model, I stumbled on GuitaRasmus’ fantastic Khorne and Nurgle thread here on Dakka and noticed he had done a pretty similar conversion. This goes to show that my idea might not really have been that original to begin with

Seriously though, check that thread out! It’s awesome!

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/395043.page

While my paintjob clearly doesn’t match GuitaRasmus’ flawless execution, Marax has been a great success for me. And I can only recommend the Dread kits to everyone: They’re a joy to work with!

Anyway, thanks for looking! Let me know what you think!

Time for an update! Here’s a look at the finished Chaos Lord with jump pack, Huntmaster Charun:

I painted him according to my standard World Eaters recipe. However, I added a little pop to his sword by using my favourite colour ever, Vallejo’s Halcon Milenario Turquoise. Quite fitting for a daemon weapon of Khorne (and a nice contrast to his armour), I think.

I also finally added the Maxmini jump pack to the model. Fortunately, everything fit together quite nicely. I had to weigh down the base by glueing in a coin, though, to prevent the model from toppling over all the time.

All in all, I’m rather pleased with the model. I think the paintjob really brings him to life. Incidentally, the first game I ever used him in really transformed him from a playing piece into a character. In case you're interested, you can read a battle report of sorts here: http://eternalhunt.wordpress.com/2012/03/09/haestia-must-burn-a-battle-report-of-sorts/

And here's a little piece of background for him:

Lord Charun, Master of the Harriers

Charun is the commander of the 4th assault company’s corps of jump infantry, the “Harriers”. For these warriors, the hunt from the sky is the ultimate thrill. In battle, they try to reach the enemy lines as quickly as possible, the howling sound of their jump packs driving fear into the hearts of their opponents. The Harriers are wild and proud warriors, and first among their number is Huntmaster Charun.

Where his fellow officer Bardolf is purposeful and taciturn, Charun is mercurial and haughty, and sometimes arrogant to a fault. In battle, the thrill of the hunt sometimes threatens to overpower him, and while it turns him into a warrior without match, there are those in the company who fear that Charun is too far gone already, as much a danger to his allies as to his enemies.

Few would dare utter such words to his face though, lest they face his wrath. Singing daemon weapon in hand and murder in his gaze, the Master of the Harriers is a frightening sight to friends and enemies alike.

As always, thanks for looking! C&C very welcome!

Hey badgerman,

ah, I guess you're referring to the dread? I'm happy that I didn't disappoint ;-)

Concerning more converted vehicles, the bad news is that I'm really an infantryman at heart, that is to say I ususally find converting infantry models far more satisfying than working on vehicles. That said, converting that dread was so much fun that I almost immediately started on a little partner for him: Expect to see him here sooner rather than later

Anyway, thanks for looking!

Here's something new to look at. Unfortunately, it's not a World Eater

I've been in a bit of a motivational slump painting-wise lately, so when inspiration came calling yesterday, I didn't care for the details. I sat down to paint a Chaos Space Marine that I had built ages ago to serve as a Word Bearer.

As you can see, he had a change of empoyer somewhere along the way and now boasts the colours of the Iron Warriors. While the World Eaters remain my favourite traitor legion, the Iron Warriors and Word Bearers easily tie for second place. And for some time now, I’ve been collecting suitable bits in order to convert some Iron Warriors legionnaires. I have no intention of starting an Iron Warriors force, but I might try something smaller, a Kill Team for Operation Killzone, for example.

When painting the model, I chose a "quick and dirty" approach. The resulting paintjob is a little more sloppy than I would have liked, but it turned out alright, I guess. My hand wasn’t steady enough to manage some truly convincing hazard stripes, and there’s a couple of rough spots on the model, but I think it’s not too bad for a test piece. At least, I managed to get the Decal on the legionnaire’s right shoulder pad to look halfway decent.

There may be a couple of small touch ups left, but all in all I am reasonably pleased with the model. It was good to just paint something on a whim. And I learned not to underestimate a colour scheme just because it's 80% Boltgun Metal

Thanks for looking!

An update, just in time for the weekend

Alas, my newest conversion will not be strengtening the ranks of Khorne's Eternal Hunt: The Iron Warrior I painted left me with an appetite for more, so I ended up building a Warsmith:

It's not my fault, though: Biohazard is currently discussing the conversion of his own Chaos Lord in his World Eaters thread here:

All that conversion goodness got me in the mood for another Termie Lord conversion, so there you have it. I already built quite a few of these, so it was a nice challenge to try and give him a distinct Iron Warriors look:

I wanted to include a few visual clues to his affiliation, so I chose to give him a hammer and went for the bionic head from the loyal marines. I also used a different choice of pauldrons to add a subtle Pre-Heresy flavour to him and to bulk him out a little.

The hammer is from the Ogre Kingdoms Ironguts kit. It may look a little crude for an Iron Warrior, but I imagine that it was constructed from a stone he tore from one of the fortresses he brought down - maybe it even came from the Imperial palace on Terra

In the end, I lost my mind and added that sinister claw from the Dark Eldar Talos kit. It may be slightly too large for the model, but it looks very dark and threatening. And its somewhat advanced design is a nice fit for the Iron Warriors in my opinion.

For the time being, the cloak is just tacked on, since attaching it permanently would make the model very difficult to paint. It helps to add some stature to the Warsmith, however, so I will definitely keep it. I also added a shield that will offer me a nice occasion to add some additional hazard stripes to the paintjob.

I have made up my mind to build a small Iron Warriors Killteam as a side project, and this guy will be leading them into battle. That gives me an opportunity to build some cool IW models without having to start yet another army

So there you go, my little weekend surprise Oh, and I'll definitely be dealing with my World Eaters next, so rest assured that this thread is in no imminent danger of being taken over by the Iron Warriors

C&C are always welcome. Let me know what you think!

Looks good I really like the hammer and the tilting plate attached to the fist. Nice touch. Where are the shoulder pauldrons from? I like the chain detail hanging from them another nice little touch.

I think he needs something between his legs as well though. Do you still have the loincloth thingys? I dont think they flow in quite the same direction as the cape though.

Hah! I am quite proud of those: They are from the Chaos Marauders, specifically parts from the unit musician's drum.Go figure! They do a rather nice job as Pre-Heresy shoulder pads, don't they?
The little chain is from the ever useful Bloodcrushers kit. I am always hesitant to use one of those little icons, because they are pretty hard to come by, but it worked so well with this guy, so I had no choice.

Biohazard wrote:I think he needs something between his legs as well though.

Don't we all? You're definitely on to something, though! I really want to use a loincloth or a dangling trophy or what have you. The problem is that a skull and chain will look too much like something a World Eater would wear. The chain loincloth from the Terminator Lord box is quite nice, but it would just end up as one more part painted silver on the finished model. That leaves the "normal" loincloth that comes with the kit, but I am not quite sold on that option. Any good idea would be greatly appreciated!

Why not paint the chain in a gold colour? Matching some of the trim on the Termi lord? It would look good and help him stand out.

True! Here's hoping the new models will be totally awesome! However, you can still get some reasonably good results with the old models if you're willing to work on the poses and mix and match a bit. The Berzerker models posted in this thread so far are all rather old, straightforward builds. Here's an example of some newer Berzerkers that were still build with some part of the old kit:

I think the old parts are still salveagable if you are willing to put a bit of work into it

@Biohazard:

Hmm, a gold chain might looked too pimped out for what I have in mind. The leather loincloth that comes with the Space Marine Commander kit might work, but there's no way I am going to buy that kit just for one bit. Seems I'll have to dig through my bitzbox to see if I find something that does the job. I am also tempted - for the first time ever - to add some kind of banner to the model's back. Not so sure about that one yet, though...

The gold could be heavily washed to darken it up and weather beat it. I like backbanners when they are done well. What are you thinking of doing?

Hmm, not sure yet: I might just use a regular Space Marine backbanner (I have several to choose from) as a base. Clip off the skull or Aquila on top and replace it with an impaled Space Marine helmet (to be painted in the colours of the Imperial Fists of course ). I am honestly no good at freehanding, so I would probably add an Iron Warriors decal as the main design element, maybe over a background of hazard stripes. Not so sure about that yet, since I often find backbanners a little silly... I somehow think I need to add a bit of height to him, but I don't want to use the normal trophy racks...

Come to think about it, I still have a leftover backbanner from the Pedro Kantor model. File off the name, and it might look great on the base, painted in IF colours and trampled into the mud

Thanks man! The hammer was really a spontaneous idea. I was a little afraid at first that it might look too primitive, but then I realised that it looks like it could be a stone from one of the fortresses conquered by the Warsmith, taken as a trophy and incorporated into his equipment as some kind of trademark weapon

Spontaneous ideas are always the best ones. Nearly everything I do comes from a sponaneaous idea. They usually come to my mind while cleaning mold lines and looking at half finished models with one eye squeezed close and a sceptical look on my face, imagining it comlete

Post by: KrautScientist

Ha! I know that feeling Speaking of spontaneous ideas, though, here's another one of mine that didn't work out as intended:

After building my first Chaos Dreadnought had turned out to be such a lot of fun, I really wanted to build a second one right away. Did I mention that I lack any sort of impulse control? Oh well…

Once again, I had a couple of things I wanted to achieve when building the model:

1. again, I wanted to avoid the refridgerator look as much as possible
2. this second Dread was going to be a lot shootier than the first (who totally focused on CC). I felt that the plastic Venerable Dreadnought kit was the way to go here, considering all the weapon options included.
3. I really, REALLY wanted to use this head for my Dread:

Anyone recognise this? I thought that it would be really cool to feature a part of one of my old toys in a conversion. Plus I think the head has a bit of a resemblance with the head from the original FW World Eaters Dread. But that might just be my imagination. In any case, I liked the slightly inhuman look created by the single eyeslit, a bit like this.

So I immediately bought the Dread kit, hurried home, broke out my knife and yellow-tac and made a mockup of the thing. Here’s what I got:

As much as I love the head, there was no getting around the fact that it was simply too big: It did not fit between the shoulders, like I had intended it to, so it was left facing slightly downwards. And with such a large head, the Dread looked somewhat misshapen – and not in a good way. So, with a heavy heart, I discarded the head that had inspired the whole conversion in the first place. Don’t feel bad for it, though: One day, its moment of glory will come. For example, if I ever do a Dreadknight conversion, then…no!…must…resist…temptation…

Fortunately, there was a good alternative: I still had some leftover parts from my Defiler conversion, and my fellow Khornate slaughterers Biohazard and Guitarasmus turned out to be very inspirational with their own Dreads. So I got to work again and ended up with this:

Much better! While this version is maybe less original, the head just fits better with the rest of the body. I changed the position of the left arm to give the model a more interesting silhouette (and to make it look like it was celebrating a successfully destroyed enemy vehicle or something like that). I also wanted the Dread to be standing on something with his left foot, so I used a sandbag as a placeholder. A stylised maw from the Ogre kingdoms was once again used to represent the World Eaters legion badge.

While there was some detailing left to do, I felt that this worked as a basic pose. However, in contrast to my CC Dread, a bit of thought would be necessary to figure out how to best build the different weapon options and give them the “Chaos treatment”…

Anyway, still a bit of work to do, but I'm definitely headed in the right direction

Nicely done! I like the gut plate on the legs. I'm not so sure of the position of the arm though. For the head to give it a more dynamic look I stuffed the back with a ball of greenstuff and added some cables cut from backpacks and other weapons. It adds a little more detail and the ball allows more options for posing. Good work brother look forward to more updates.

I love your version with the added cables, however I chose something slightly different for my Dread. It'll all become clear in the next update. Thanks, guys!

Chaos Emperor, that's a nice idea! I wouldn't even actually have to use jeweler's chain or GS: The rider from the WFB Manticore kit comes with a perfect chain cloak! However, I have yet to convince myself to buy that kit. All the Chaos Lord and Sorcerer bitz are fantastic, and the Manticore could arguably be used as a giant Fleshhound of Khorne or a Chaos Spawn or what have you. Haven't made the decision yet, though. Perhaps I'll wait until I have an idea of what the new Chaos releases may look like.

Anyway, thanks for the idea!

Alright, everybody, here's the latest news on my WIP Chaos Dread:

After deciding on a pose and overall look for the Dread, the only thing left for completing the main body was to tidy up the conversion work and to add some suitable bits to achieve the chaos look I wanted. Here’s what I ended up with:

Fortunately, the Venerable Dread kit is chock-full of different options – not only for the weapons but also for the sarcophagus, the shoulders, shinguards, armour plates etc. I added a couple of plates which I decorated with Chaos stars. The shinguards were also “chaosified”. After some thinking, I decided to do away with the armoured gorget since I really liked the look of the orginial Chaos Space Marine’s torso wired into the machine. I kept the halo-like trophy rack from the Chaos vehicle sprue, but decided to use a different variant. The sandbag placeholder was replaced with a skeleton. I know it’s fairly unrealistic that a mere skeleton should resist the weight of the Dread’s leg, and it also doesn’t make that much sense in the first place, but it looked cool enough, so I kept it.

Like I already said, I wanted to change the pose of the left arm to break up the silhouette of the model a bit. I used all kinds of cables and machine bits to detail the joint between the torso and left arm of the Dread. While I was once again tempted to use chainblade fingers, the Pre-Heresy-style powerfist was just too cool to pass over. The flamer was a must though, even though a Bolter might have made slightly more sense for a shooty Dread.

I also added a skull-and-chain combo to the reactor on the back of the model. I didn’t use any dragon heads as muzzles for the exhaust pipes this time around, since that would probably have looked a little silly with four pipes in place. As a final touch, I used a leftover skeleton head as a head for the Dread pilot. I made sure to use a head that looked properly damaged and disfigured. I like the idea that you’ll be able to take of the larger skull mask to look at the Marine’s “true” face underneath.

And with that, the body was basically finished. All that was left to do was to build and detail the different weapon options. Like I said, the Venerable Dread kit offers lots of choices in this regard and comes with a Lascannon, Plasma Cannon and Assault cannon that can be easily exchanged, even on the finished model. I wanted to keep the Las and Plasma, but replace the Assault cannon with an older looking twin-linked Autocannon. And I would definitely need a Heavy Bolter as well. Fortunately, I still had some leftover parts from the Furioso Kit, so it was all just a matter of kitbashing and careful cutting. But that is a story for next time.

Until then, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks mate! All the loyal Dread kits are reasonably simple to convert to Chaos, but the genius of the Venerable Dread is that it's basically all there in the kit! You just need a couple of extra chaos bits and you're done. I cannot recommend this kit highly enough! It's almost a little sad that the probable release of a new Chaos Dread kit will make converting obsolete

Your dread is looking really good. The sarcophagus front is really cool, as is the skeleton underfoot (bone's strong stuff, I guess). I think that perhaps more chaos-y detailing would help the look. Also, something about the wrist of the close combat arm seems off. Maybe rotate the hand a few degrees clockwise?

Also, the warsmith is really awesome. The hammer is a cool idea, and the hand is waaay to big, but perfect, so...

Cheers!

Thanks prime12357! Regarding the Dread's hand, I really tried multiple positions. But it's a bit tricky to get right, since some of them interfere with the underslung flamer. Still others make the model loke a little awkward. So the pose of the hand really was something of a compromise. I think it kinda works out okay, though

For the skeleton you could always build up gravel and stuff around it to show how it is supporting the weight a little better OR you could go a way I had originally planned and use one of the loyalist sarcophagi plates ripped open exposing the skeleton. Check out the pic here..

You know, I've actually pretty much made my peace with the skeleton I noticed later that I should also have done something with the Dread's toes to make the foot look more realistic, but I'll just chalk that off as two lessons learned for next time -- and if they release a new plastic Chaos Dread kit, there's guaranteed to be a next time too

That's one great idea with the busted sarcophagus on the base, though. I may have to steal it for another model, perhaps a Daemon Prince? I still have a Bloodthirster waiting to be built and painted. Hmmm...

Also, I realised again that your Dread is quite awesome, even in this unfinished stage. You'll definitely have to finish him, mate!

As always, thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks a lot, tipios! You're basically one of the masters of Dread building, so it's really quite an honour

You're right though: The moment when I got the idea to add a neck to the first Dread was really a bit of a turning point! Most Dreads that use a Juggernaut head have it sitting flush against the sarcophagus. That often makes the Dread look fairly immobile and static. I wanted him to look very angry, and the neck really helped My favourite part is that it was mainly constructed from a leftover Defiler CCW. The original weapon looks fairly horrible in my opinion, but I cut it into many little pieces and did all kinds of things with them

LOL, enough with the skeleton already Those concerned with realism may imagine that the model shows the exact moment the Dread steps on the skeleton, just an instant before it's pulverised

I, on the other hand, firmly subscribe to the "Rule of Cool", so I am not afraid of building things that are stupid and unrealistic

However, you've managed to get me intrigued about the idea of a Necron trampled underfoot but still "alive" (or whatever it is Necrons are when they've not been completely annihilated). Might have to save that idea for yet another model...sigh

Alright, some news on my Dread:

With the body of complete, it’s time to take a look at the different weapon options. Here we go:

The Venerable Dread kit comes with three different wapon options already, so much of the work had already been done for me by GW’s designers. The options present in the kit are a Lascannon, Plasma Cannon and Assault Cannon. As a very nice bonus, those three weapons can be easily exchanged by swapping out the gun barrels even after the model is finished. It doesn’t even need any magnetising.

It was clear to me that I would keep the Las and Plasma Cannons, since they are just as viable in a CSM list as in a loyal Marine army. The only thing I had to do was to make them look slightly less loyal and a lot more chaotic.

First, the Lascannon:

This one was the easiest conversion by far: I just clipped off the ends of the gunbarrels and exchanged them with dragon heads from the Chaos vehicle sprue. The arm itself would be used for both the Las and Plasma Cannon, so I only had to convert one version. I stole the idea to use a little icon of Khorne on the arm from Biohazard’s Dread conversion and added a dangling skull on a chain as well as another skull on a spike for good measure. As a rule of thumb, you can never go wrong with skulls and chains on a World Eaters model.

Next, the Plasma Cannon.

Once again, all I needed to do was to add a couple of bits to achieve the Chaos look. Easy, right?

And it was. I added a leftover daemon head from the Defiler kit which fit perfectly with only minor cutting necessary. I also added a chain hanging from the weapon’s muzzle, and the Plama Cannon was done as well.

So far, so good! Here’s where the fun started though: The third option that came with the Venerable Dread Kit was a modern day Assault Cannon. So as a true follower of the dark gods, I would have to come up with a weapon more in line with the Chaos Space Marine armoury. I chose the trusty Autocannon which meant that I couldn’t use the Assault Cannon bit. I also wanted a Heavy Bolter as another option, so I would have to convert that too. Luckily, my deep bitzbox contained several unused Dreadnought arms (some from the Venerable Dread, some from the Furioso kit I had used to buy my CC Dread), so I gathered my bits and got going.

First up, the Heavy Bolter:

An easy enough conversion, this one. I took another page from Biohazard’s book and pretty much stole his idea of how to build a heavy Bolter using weapons from the regular CSM kit. A little cutting and fitting was all it took. I added an old Warriors of Chaos shield and yet another piece of chain and a skull to the shoulderguard. A little repetitive, I know…

And finally, the Autocannon:

This was built by combining a leftover Frag Cannon arm from the Furioso Kit with Ork gun barrels. The requiste skull and chain bits were then added to acieve the Chaos look – you should know the drill by now…

And with that, the different weapon options were finished – although I feel I’ll have to build a Multimelta and Rocket Launcher somewhere along the way, just to have a full set.

Alright, time to get some paint on this bad boy Stay tuned for the next update when I'll have lots of pretty pictures of the finished model

Thanks, tipios! The best part is that I found a way of using that leftover arm from the Furioso kit! I always hate good bitz going to waste Then again, I had to buy the Ork weapons to pull off the conversion, but oh well - I guess you cannot win them all

Okay, everyone. Here's the promised update on my completed Dread:

To celebrate the occasion, let’s have a huuuge post with lots of pretty pictures!

Having painted my first Dread a short time ago, I was positively surprised by the experience. The larger scale compared to regular 40k infantry made for much smoother sailing, while working in multiple sub-assemblies wasn’t nearly as exhausting as expected. So I had already developed some kind of routine before tackling my second Dread.

I started by laying down an undercoat of GW Chaos Black spraypaint. The lower body, upper body and weapon options were sprayed while the model was still disassembled, so I could be sure to get paint in all the little nooks and crannies. Also, as a first for me, I actually glued the different weapons to leftover pieces of sprue for easier access during spraying and painting.

With undercoating out of the way, I started on the actual paintjob. The base and lower body came first. Then I painted the upper body, the only complication being that I had elected to permanently attach the left arm before painting. But fortunately, everything worked out okay.

Here’s the completed Dread with just the weapon arm missing. Special care was giving to the pilot’s desiccated and ruined features. Yeah, I know, I probably need professional attention…

I then completed all of the weapons in two shorter sittings. Since I had resisted the temptation of glueing everything together beforehand, painting all the different parts was easy enough. Here’s what I came up with:

First up, the Lascannon:

Next, the Plasma Cannon (using the same arm, as previously mentioned):

I couldn’t resist painting a simple OSL effect on the plasma coils. It’s pretty subtle and not all that spectacular really, but I like it enough that the Plasma Cannon is now my favourite from a visual standpoint, even though I usually go for another option when I am actually using the model in games.

Next in line, the Heavy Bolter:

I’m a little ashamed to admit that the barrels have not yet been drilled out – there simply wasn’t a drill bit of the right size available. I guess I’ll have to get that fixed sooner rather than later though, since the black dots look even more silly due to the size of the weapon…

And finally, the Autocannon:

I am quite pleased with this one actually, considering it was the most involved conversion of the bunch. It looks suitably brutal and effective, doesn’t it?

And with that, my second Chaos Dread was finished. Here he is once again in all his glory:

In the photo, the model is equipped with the Plasma Cannon. The additional weapons are (from left to right): Lascannon, Heavy Bolter and Autocannon. The facemask can also be taken off.

All in all, I am very pleased with this guy. He turned out just like I had imagined, plus he makes an awesome companion piece for my other Dread. Speaking of which…

The true genius of this conversion is that Marax the Fallen can also profit from the additional weapon options. Take a look:

Since the model was planned with the dual CCW’s firmly in mind, I was a little hesitant to give him a different armament. But I have to say he looks just as pissed off with an Autocannon, don’t you think?

Anyway, those guys really add a lot of firepower and character to the 4th assault company. And it was a lot of fun to build and paint them. I could easily see myself completing an army consisting solely of Dreads…go figure.

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Beautiful Dreads.

A suggestion, not sure if someone beat me to it, but the head you had on your Dreadnought that was replaced with the defiler mask, you should use it on a Dreadknight conversion. Would look sick.

Keep up the good work, brother.

Seriously though: While it would be fun to try a couple of things with the Dreadknight kit, I'll have to suspend that thought for a while. At the moment, there's too much unpainted stuff on my desk anyway and I imagine that it'll only get worse once the new Codex hits. I can promise that there will always be enough World Eaters to keep this plog rolling, though, never you fear

Hey, good work on the second dread, I like him better than the first one. How much of his left arm is converted and if so how? I might have missed something, but that's not taken straight from another kit, or is it?

Post by: KrautScientist

Hey Baiyuan, thanks for the kind words!

About the arms: Phew, let me see:

- The arms for the Lascannon and Plasma Cannon are the least converted. I just added a few Chaos bitz and slightly modified the barrels. It's also basically one arm with exchangeable barrels - the Venerable Dread kit is pretty clever like that.

- The Heavy Bolter was constructed using two regular Heavy Bolters from the CSM sprue and a leftover arm from the Venerable Dread - the kit gives you at least three, IIRC.

- The Autocannon was built by combining a leftover Frag Cannon arm from the Furioso kit with barrels from Ork guns.

If you're interested in a more detailed rundown, take a look:

Hope this helps!

Update: Whoa, dude, I just realised you were talking about the LEFT arm My bad!
Anyway, it's indeed really pretty much straight out of the box. Again, it's from the Venerable Dread kit. The only thing I did was attaching it at an angle and then adding cabling and technical bitz to make it look like the "natural" joint. The cables were made from the (otherwise useless) Defiler CCW.

Yep, I thought the idea to give the impression of an actual joint is neat. Most people would have gone for lots and lots of guitar wire to cover everything up.

He's a World Eaters legionnaire, obviously. I wanted him to look like a good representative for the legion's gladiatorial origins. I had also wanted to built a Marine with a Marauder's torso for quite some time, so I really managed to kill two birds with one stone

Nah, I'm quite happy with the way they look. They were supposed to channel the old "Assault Berzerkers" with at least one bare arm on every model (and in my case, more bare heads in the unit). I want them to look like they are the first ones through the breach in trench and urban warfare.

Okay, guys: The next update goes live a little early, since I'll be out of town all day tomorrow. I'll have to get up at 5am. That'll be horrible. I'm not a morning person, in case you didn't notice

Previously on this thread, we had a look at my two converted Chaos Dreads. With the models themselves finished, there are still a few loose ends to tie up.

Who would have thought that painting my two Chaos Dreads would turn out to be such a fun project? Not me, that’s for sure! But alas, the work is finished. Never fear, though, because those two bad boys are still good for another post on miscellaneous matters:

1.) A new friend

The first thing I want to show you is a little project that was directly influenced by my first Dread, Marax the Fallen. There’s just something in the way he’s looking straight ahead, screaming in rage, that inspired me to build a special objective marker to complement the Dread:

I wanted a loyal Space Marine defiantly firing a couple of last shots at the advancing Dread before being torn apart. I also wanted him to be battered and wounded already. The marker was built from a very old Space Marine body I got from somewhere. The legs and torso were already inseparably bonded, so there was no way of changing the pose that much, but I guess it still works. I added a couple of leftover Space Marine bits to complete him as well as some viscera (courtesy of the GW Zombie kit) to show that he’s already mortally wounded. The position of the feet is admittedly a little wonky, but I didn’t want the project to move into serious work territory, so I just kept calm and carried on.

The Marine was painted as a member of a nondescript DIY chapter. I simply chose colours on a whim, keeping the palette fairly muted. It may be interesting to note that the main colour of his armour is a darker shade of the colour I used for Marax’ lightning claws – talk about Karma ;-)

To make him look suitably battered, I added tons of weathering and battle damage to the model. The legs were also lightly drybrushed in the same colour as the base to show the grime and dust of the battlefield.

And here’s a picture of the two models together, just so you can see what all the fuss is about:

Marax seems to have found a little friend. How cute!

It’s fun little nonsense projects like this that always keep me motivated. And while there’s no obvious gameplay reason for having built this, the model can always be used as a normal objective marker in games of 40k.

2.) A strange kind of Karma

When I discussed the different weapons for my shooty Dread, I took care to tell you in no uncertain terms that at least two ideas (the basic arm construction and the Heavy Bolter) were basically stolen from my fellow World Eater Biohazard. Since then, by a strange twist of fate, the very arm that inspired me so heavily has found its way into my collection. Biohazard no longer needed it and sent it to me instead, thereby rewarding instead of punishing my idea theft. I am not quite sure that Karma is supposed to work like that, but there you have it. Nevertheless, I feel very thankful as well as a little humbled. So before this post veers off into Broken Aesop territory, let me just say a huge “thank you” to Biohazard and show you the painted heavy Bolter:

As a nice bonus, this means that I can use both my Dreads equipped with Heavy Bolters at the same time if I so choose. Just look at Chip ‘n’ Dale here:

Bros 4 Life, yo!

3.) A warrior’s name

Last but not least, I need your help! You all saw my new Chaos Dread (and if you didn’t, there’ll be a chance to rectify that oversight in a minute).
Anyway, I still need a name for this guy. I am already fairly clear on his basic background and have decided that – apart from whatever name he ends up with – he will be known among the warriors of the 4th assault company by the eptithet “The Undying”. But that Dread was once a man, and a man needs a name. So please help me out here, dear readers, and let me know your ideas! I am not looking for uber-evil names in the “Darklord McEvilguy” vein, mind you: What I need is the name of a proud, if somewhat efficiently brutal warrior. Let’s have a look at the basic background. Maybe it’ll help to inspire you!

The Undying

In a way, the Undying was old already when the World Eaters legion was still young. Having been a warrior from a very early age, he was already a battle-hardened veteran when Lorimar ascended to command of the 4th assault company. The man who should become the Undying had seen battle and he had the scars to prove it. He served unter Lorimar’s command, but he was a trusted friend of the young Captain, full of experience and wisdom and gifted with a deep understanding of what it was that bound the legionnaires together as brothers. He stood with Lorimar during his search for an identity for the legion. And he stood with him when the Captain decided to follow his Primarch to Terra to depose the false Emperor. For many years, he was a tower of strength for the company and came to be called “older brother” by the legionnaires.

Shortly after the Skalathrax campaign had sundered the legion, he was mortally wounded during a hunt. The man who had survived a thousand battles was powerless in the end, as the alien powers of a Xenos weapon tore his body apart. With his dying breath, he implored Lorimar to let him continue fighting, accepting the dangers of being entombed within the sarcophagus of a Dreadnought. Lorimar was hesitant, for he had witness the effects of incarceration on the Fallen, but in the end he granted his old friend’s wish.

And thus the “older brother” became the being known as the Undying. For the last millennia, his colossal frame has continued to be a sight of inspiration to his brothers. Where Marax the Fallen is a warning of the damnation awaiting the company, the Undying symbolises a way of keeping this grisly fate at bay. It is only at the most chaotic moments of battle that he will succumb to rage and frenzy, and each time this happens, his brothers hope that he will come to eventually. And they fear the day when their older brother’s mind will finally cave in on itself…

Alright, with that out of the way, I am very much looking forward to your naming suggestions! The winner of this little competition can bask in the knowledge that I’ll be naming my Dread according to his suggestion. What an honour, right?

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Very nice work. Both dreads look great, and they look great together. I love the matching heavy bolters.

Nice work on the wounded marine, too. That's a great idea, and I like how he looks facing Marax. For the leges, it might be too late now, but you could simply cut off that wonky right leg, like it was ripped off. Either remove it entirely or have it sitting on the base. Add a bit for some bone and some red wash and you might have a suitably gory detail that fixes the leg without too much more work..

As for a name, I'd suggest "Krueger," but I think Biohazard already nabbed it....

Post by: KrautScientist

Thanks, guys!

@Witzkatz: Yes, I am quite happy that the interaction of the models works out pretty much exactly like I had envisioned it beforehand! It's even better if you consider the fact that the fallen Marine was built from leftover bitz only.

@Yellowbeard: The whole thing with the legs is basically due to me being way too lazy. Then again, I didn't really want to spend that much time on something I wasn't even sure would work out. So while the feet do look kind of hoky, it's definitely something I can live with

As for the name: Yeah, Biohazard beat me to it, at least to the epithet "The Undying". Great minds think alike, I guess That said, it's only fair, considering the fact that I ruthlessly stole his Heavy Bolter conversion. Also, "Krueger" doesn't work that well for me because it's a quite common German name. And we do actually have one atrociously unfunny comedian whose name is Krueger, so that's not a name I would lightly give to an honoured veteran of the 4t assault company

Any further suggestions, anyone?

Thanks, guys!

@ Chaos Emperor: Thanks for the cool name suggestion! Noted

@ edbradders: Don't be too hard on yourself, mate. I'm not a particularly good painter myself.

Right in time for the weekend, there is also an update concerning my World Eaters. I already posted my Chaos Lord with jump pack, Lord Charun, on this thread. Today, we'll take a look at his subordinates, the 4th assault company’s corps of jump infantry, known as “Harriers” in my fluff and “Raptors” in the Codex.

You know what? I really love Raptors! While some argue that they have been nerfed in the current Codex and while no one can really know what they will work like in the new book, they are one of my favourite units for several reasons.

The first reason is a tactical one: If you – like me – are playing a fairly conservative World Eaters army, a lot of your gameplan consists of getting squads of Berzerkers across the table as fast as possible without being shot to pieces first. Even if your squads are fully equipped with dedicated Rhinos (which they should be), this usually makes for a grueling advance throug enemy fire. And then there’s the whole disembarking affair once the squad has reached its destination. Raptors, on the other hand, add a lot of mobility and an element of unpredictability to your strategy: With a squad of Raptors or two, you can suddenly outflank your enemy. Or you could pick off his vehicles. Or take guerilla shots at his tarpit units. Or you could just rush into close combat faster than you could with your Berzerkers.

Raptors are also quite flexible: Take two Meltaguns in the squad to use them as tank hunters. Use two flamers to turn them into fairly competent infantry killers. If you add an icon of Khorne, they’ll even do an okay job in the following combat. I usually try to run at least one squad of Raptors at all times, just for the added mobility and tactical options. Even at their worst, they’re still a big distraction: Your enemy will often target them not because they’re especially dangerous to him but because they might become so later on. That in turn will draw away fire from your Berzerker squads, improving their chances of reaching the enemy lines in one piece.

The other reason for liking Raptors is an aesthetic one: They fit very well with the feeling of an army focusing on assault. They make even more sense in a World Eaters army from a fluff standpoint. They also offer great conversion options, and that has always been good enough for me!

So when I built my Raptors, it was clear that I would not be using the GW ones. Why I like their design well enough, I wanted my own Raptors to look like members of the World Eaters. I also didn’t want to miss the opportunity of creating interesting models myself.

My Raptors were built by mixing parts from the Berzerker and Chaos Space Marine kits. For their jump packs, I chose Maxmini’s standard jump packs. Back when I built those models, those were hands down my favourite choice. Meanwhile, Maxmini themselves have released two more variants that are more detailed, and Forgeworld has also taken up releasing Pre-Heresy jump packs, but back then, the ones by Maxmini were really the best way to go. I still like them a lot too, even though they’re less detailed than the newer releases. I especially like the turbine look they have going on, especially since it closely mimics GW’s Pre-Heresy World Eaters art.

I also tried to make them more interesting by raising them higher on their bases, so even the models with more static poses would look different enough from regular Berzerkers. The effect was achieved by adding all kinds of leftover pieces from different vehicle sprues, especially leftover Rhino doors.

But enough talk! Here’s what I ended up with:

I wanted this guy to be very dynamic and I used his base to support that effect. The downside is that it is quite hard to take a photo of him that gives you a good idea of the model, but oh well… Here’s a couple of extra shots:

Next up, one of my special weapons guys. As you can see, this model uses a flamer. I quite like the relatively sleek silhouette of the model in contrast to his bulky jump pack. The helmet was spliced together from that of a Khorne Berzerker and a regular CSM helmet, by the way.

The next guy has a more static pose, but I still like him. The base gives him a little extra dynamism, in my opinion.

And here’s the squad’s Icon Bearer. All my squads have Icon Bearers, regardless of whether they can actually get an icon or not. It’s just something that I have kept from my Warhammer Fantasy days, as I think that it really adds flavour to the army. I also try never to use an icon design twice across my army.

By the way, here’s something I found out by pure chance: By clipping off the small chain from the chainaxe’s handle, the weapon now looks far heaviery, since the focus is on the axe head instead of the grip. It’s just a small thing, but I think it works rather nicely.

And finally, my second flamer guy. I tried to make him look a little less static than the other one: Just because you’re wielding a flamer doesn’t mean you don’t get to use a chainsword, you know

And finally, here’s a little family portrait of the squad so far.

Take note that this is not the whole squad, though: All in all, there’s seven more models where these came from: Two regular Raptors who usually serve as ablative wounds, two champs (one with a Powerfist, one with twin Lightning claws), two guys with Meltaguns and another Icon Bearer. I will usually run these guys in one squad of eight (what else?) as either tank hunters or infantry killers or in two squads of six, with both serving one of either role respectively. Unfortunately, that means that I still have quite a bit of painting ahead of me until I can call these guys finished…

So, what do you think?

P.S. I am still accepting naming suggestions for my Dread, of course

LOVE the flamer/chainsword guy. Great job on the helmet conversion as well. Its a small change that makes a big difference imho. Really like the simplistic icon as well. Is that from the WHFB Marauders?

The Assaults look wonderful! However, the mere fact that they are not decked out in gold and purple gives me cause for concern. We all know that six is the prime number!

Love the icon, I fully agree with what you say regarding the duplication [or not] of icons throughout a squad. Flavour and fluff adds so much to an army and can really make the most bland units pop out with a bang. Great work in this thread, I've been watching it for a very long time and always love the updates.

Thanks a lot guys! Glad you like the models!

@ Biohazard: I was actually pleasantly surprised that I was able to pull off that helemt conversion so easily. Normally, stuff like that always turns into a nightmare for me since I can't seem to manage any straight cuts when splicing together different helmets. The Icon is from the Chaos Marauder Horseman, IIRC. A fantastic kit that gives you lots of bang for the buck. The only downside is that it also gives you horses and rider bodies which aren't all that useful if you're not actually going for Horsemen

@ Yellowbeard: Mate, take all the ideas you can carry from this thread! Especially about the basing, since cutting apart one or two Rhino doors can really go quite a long way

@Eirikr: It goes without saying that the only way that gold and purple will be present in this army is in the form of lopped off heads and pieces of armour trampled into the mud on the bases. We're not in a Price music video, after all Seriously, though: Thanks for the kind words. And yes, it's often the simplest things that can add identity to an army. You obviously don't need to be the world's greatest converter or painter to profit from a few little tricks

Khornites; always bullying.

Slaanesh awaits! Unimaginable pleasures and endless torment nice things await you!

EDIT:

I love this and it immediately makes me like your army and presentation even more. There's something not quite right about the Chaos legions we have now, GW seem intent on making the remaining followers of legions a mixture of berserk madmen, perverted sexfiends, rotting hulks of flesh or nothing at all - of course, this is with a hefty splattering of skulls and spikes! Any Chaos warband//legion remnants that abhors this and goes down a more sensible and pragmatic route is to be applauded. Whilst I do not deny the fact that Chaos may very well push certain men and units to their absolute limits in beastial forms, I do not think it should be so simple as to say "All Khorne-worshipping units are madmen hell-bent on destruction, bloodshed and frothing spit". It's amateurish and smacks of simplifying gak up. Your reminisce is an excellent example of how things really should be for Chaos. Sure, they'll rip your face off if given the chance [especially for Khornites!] but that doesn't mean that the Marines are devoid of all emotion beyond the core characteristics of their patron God. The salute between an Ultramarine and the most martial of all traitor legions [and pre-heresy loyalist legions] is fething awesome - there's still respect on the battlefield, no matter how visceral and brutal things are about to get. Good show, chap, for bringing this out in your Khorne troops! It would be nice to one day perhaps see a diorama from you between World Eater and Ultramarine? Go on, you know you want to now.

@Eiríkr: Thanks mate! If you're interested in my army's fluff, you may want to take a look at this:

http://www.throneofskulls.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2348

It's my fluff thread on Throne of Skulls and it shows how I chose to readjust my army's fluff to turn them into a bit more like actual characters instead of something straight out of a comic book.
Come to think about it, it seems a little counterintuitive to invite a Slaneeshi to a Khorne-themed board... But while you're there, you might still turn into an actual warrior

Concerning the diorama idea, there's already this, of course:

i love looking at other people characters and reading fluff, especially when their as good as yours.
i have also been wanting to write a 40k story for some time now and would love to feature an appaerance form lorimar, bardulf, charun and Diemos (from Biohazards world eaters) they look and sound so good!!!!

Thanks a lot, guys!

@ Chaos Emperor: I am a little ashamed to say that as of yet, I am simply using the unconverted (and yet unpainted) FW Lord Zhufor model to represent Lorimar on the battlefield. I like that model so much that I didn't really feel like I could improve on it. Then again, I'll probably have to build an even better version of him sooner or later, lest he ends up the only unconverted model in my army

I definitely hear what you're saying about building more HQ's than you can actually field. I must have accumulated ten or more converted Chaos Lords already, and I am currently in the early stages of building yet another one...
If you like my fluff, you may be in for a treat, because I am currently preparing for the next game in our campaign and I am also writing a piece of fluff to go with the battle. It will feature Charun, Bardolf and Lorimar (as well as one or two other officers of the 4th assautl company) and shed a bit more light on their characters. I'll post it here and on my blog pretty soon, I guess.

To have one or several of my characters featured in another person's fluff would be a great honour, of course! I guess Biohazard would agree as well. To tell you the truth, I have already begun to think about how Lorimar and Deimos would get along - after all, they've probably known each other for thousands of years. Then again, Lorimar is probably a little peculiar about the other officers of the World Eaters. For instance, he would probably despise Kharn and those who follow him for proving instrumental in the sundering of the legion and its downfall into barbarism..

Anyway, I would be honoured and thrilled to read anything you come up with! To make things a little easier for you, here are two quotes and a short piece of fluff featuring Lorimar to show you what kind of guy he is. Like I said, there'll be more as soon as the next campaign battle comes up! (Presumably, some time next week):

„Tell the galaxy about us what you must. We care not. But tell them this as well: We still have our honour.”

"You fools! Your gods have blinded you with visions of glory and power, of a golden future that awaits you in their service. But our lord has shown us more than you could ever imagine. There are no empires awaiting you. In the endless cold between the stars, there is only the hunter and his prey. And those who were once the former and are now the latter. All that remains is the hunt, for only the hunt is eternal."

both attributed to Lorimar of the World Eaters’ 4th assault company

***

The battle was over. The red haze of anger had dispersed, once again leaving nothing but a dull emptiness.
Lorimar gazed across the barren wasteland that had been the stage for the last fight. He felt that a very similar wasteland lay hidden within himself.
Andrakhas was dead. Lorimar himself had slain the warlock and bagged the prey. He could still see Andrakhas’ body in the distance, burning in a multi-coloured fire.

Lorimar and his warriors had advanced through the Thousand Sons’ hail of fire. The Rubric Marines' firepower had been superior, but in the end, it had not been able to save them from the wrath of Khorne’s servants. Lorimar gazed at the helmet he was holding in his massive, armoured gauntlet. Whatever may have been left inside the suits of armour had escaped with a dry rustling when Andrakhas died. Lorimar stared into the empty eyesockets as if they might provide an answer. Ghostly automata, slaves, damned to an eternal cycle of war and death. Was there a reason for this? He did not know. Neither did he know who had been the winner of today’s battle after all. The prey had been run down. That was all that mattered.

One last moment, then Lorimar closed his armoured fist and ground the helmet to a fine powder, trickling through his fingers. “All is dust”, Lorimar growled, “all is dust indeed.”

Alright, everyone: Once again, the weekend is fast approaching, so let's have another update. For the purists of you, it might be a problem that the models I'd like to showcase today are not strictly World Eaters, although I use them as allies, so I hope it's okay if I post them here instead of creating yet another thread. Here goes:

One thing I realised only after getting back into the hobby in 2010 is how awesome the idea of “The Lost and the Damned” actually was. Granted, when Codex Eye of Terror was released, the whole idea of an army made up of traitors and mutants was probably mostly GW’s attempt at getting people to buy a half baked mutant kit, hastily thrown together from Zombie, Catachan and Ork boy sprues. But then, the Blood Pact happened. And Forgeworld released their gorgeous Renegade Militia. And so when I got back into cutting up little toy soldiers, it wasn’t long before I thought about building at least a small Traitor Guard/LNTD force.

Now the easiest way of going about this would doubtlessly have been to just buy some Cadians, the FW Renegade milita conversion kit and be done with it. But while I love the FW kit and think it’s among the greatest stuff they have ever released, that would have seemed like a bit of a cop-out to me. So, with the ambition of converting those models myself but with no good idea in sight, I put the project on the backburner for a while…

…until a visit to the FLGS saw me buying a box of Cadians and old Chaos Marauders on impulse. And when I got home, I started kitbashing them into my version of Traitor Guard soldiers. Not a very original recipe, admittedly. But then, it was down to me and my bitzbox — just the way I like it.

I took inspiration from a couple of sources, although my main points of reference were the Vraksian Renegade Militia and Dave Taylor’s fantastic Blood Pact models. In case you haven't seen those yet, I heartily recommend you take a look here:

http://davetaylorminiatures.blogspot.de/2009/09/archenemys-command-squads.html

I was even tempted to start a Blood Pact force myself for a while, but then decided on a more “undivided” look in order to be more flexible. I wanted the models to be usable with the old LNTD list, but also with the current IG book as well as FW’s Vraksian Renegade Militia rules. So I started off by building a Platoon Command Squad for my traitors. Here it is:

From left to right, we have a medic, company standard bearer, commander, veteran with special weapon and a traitor with voxcaster. I also built a psyker, while I was at it.

The models are fairly simple kitbashes, using parts from the Cadian shock troopers, the WFB Chaos Marauders, Marauder Horsemen, WFB Warriors of Chaos and WFB Empire flagellants. I wanted my traitors to have an unkempt, feral look to them, but to be at least partly identifiable as former Imperial Guard (or at least PDF). Take note that there is very little fluff in place at this point. Basically the only thing I have decided as of yet is that these guys will be known as “Urash’s Marauders”.

Let’s take a look at the different models in the command squad:

Company Standard Bearer:

This guy was strongly influenced by the standard bearer from Dave Taylor’s Blood Pact. He uses mostly Cadian parts with a couple of armour plates and bits to give him the suitable Chaos look. His head is possibly the greatest head from the Empire flagellant kit. His standard was originally a WFB Ogre standard.

The colour scheme for these models took me quite a while to figure out. I knew from the start that I didn’t want to make them look too comic-book-evil by using lots of red and black. Instead I went for pale skin, a dark grey uniform (unchanged from their loyalist days) and a couple of red and bronze accents to show their new allegiance.

I am not very good at freehands, so I was elated that Dave Taylor did a very nice tutorial on how to paint a stylised chaos icon. It's here:

http://davetaylorminiatures.blogspot.de/2010/01/mark-of-dark-gods-bonus-post.html

I used it to paint the standard. I liked the result well enough, so I decided that I would use the motif all over the army to tie them together visually.

Company Commander “Lord Urash”

I wanted this guy to look pretty imposing, so I used a daemonic looking sword from the Chaos Marauders and a Terminator’s power fist on him. The latter one also shows how Urash’s marauders tend to steal everything they can use off the bodies of their fallen enemies. I also added small horns to him to show how the powers of Chaos have already started to corrupt him physically. To imply that his sword may be of daemonic origin, I added an OSL effect to the runes on the blade.

Traitor with Plasmagun

I like this guy a lot! I think is has to be the helmet. Or the pose. Anyway, his Plasmagun was spliced together from a regular Bolter and a Khorne Berzerker Plasma pistol. While I am fairly reluctant to actually use Plasma weapons on the table due to their tendency to blow up in your own face, I always relish the occasion to add a little visual “pop” to a model by painting a small OSL effect on its Plasma weapon.

Traitor with Voxcaster

With the rest of the models looking fairly primitive and feral, I thought it would make sense for the guy with the Voxcaster to carry some kind of war drum. That way, he would use his Voxcaster not only to relay orders, but also to drive the Marauders forwards with the beats of his drum.

While the sculpt of the Chaos Marauders is a bit on the old side, the kit is still worth it simply because of the amount of stuff you get: There are lots and lots of weapon options, and multiple sets of the bitz used for the command squad. With just one box of Chaos Marauders, I was able to not only built a lot of traitors, but also use the additional bitz to give icons to the different squads. And I still had quite a lot of leftovers for my World Eaters too!

Traitor Medic

I really went to town on this guy! I thought about how the forces of Chaos might influence a medic, and I decided to build a character with a suitably demented look. In my imagination, he may be fairly good at patching up the wounded, but his fascination with the human body has also led tim to start collecting body parts he considers to be “interesting specimens” from the dead and the dying. That’s why I gave him a couple of grisly trophies as well as a stained butcher’s apron. I also added a gagged head from the flagellant kit — maybe he is as dangerous to his own as to the enemy, so the Marauders have decided to gag him, lest they get bitten.

Traitor Veteran/Bodyguard

I wanted this guy to look like a true barbarian. In the half baked idea I have of my traitors’ fluff, they were originally a regiment of the Imperial Guard that was reinforced with a lot of recruits from a primitive world in order to compensate heavy losses. Then, the traditions and beliefs of the new recruits began to slowly overwhelm the other soldiers’ loyalty. So I wanted to have some models that almost looked like Cadians, while others would show their primitive origins more clearly. And this guy definitely fits the latter category. Not much else to say, except that I am quite fond of him for some reason.

Psyker

What self-respecting force of traitors would be complete without a psyker? The model itself is a standard Empire flagellant, although I attached a couple of chains that are floating, held aloft by his psychic powers. To enforce the supernatural look even further, I added some jagged rocks to his base. They look like they just erupted out of the ground due to some witchery. They were carved from leftover sprue, by the way.

Originally, I wanted to give him glowing eyes, but unfortunately many of the flagellant heads have no eyes (or at least no eyeballs) to begin with. So I went for blood running down his cheeks instead – the power of the Warp probably caused his eyes to burst in their sockets…

And with that, my command squad was complete! I also built two squads of traitors and bought a set of four Ogre Kingdoms Ironguts to convert some traitorous Ogryns. I may also add some kind of vehicle to my Traitor Guard at some point, although I am not sure if I want to expand them into a force of their own. Until now, they have seen action as allies to my World Eaters during our campaign. But if the new Chaos Codex actually has an option for cultists and/or traitors, these guys could indeed prove to be very useful!

Anyway, I’ll show you the rest of my traitors some other time. Until then, why not let me know what you think of my command squad?

Well, the ejection port is there because I paid zero attention to the actual technical function of the weapon. Thanks for making me look bad

Seriously, though: Concerning the horns, I honestly couldn't tell you what bit I cut them off. They came from some Chaos bit or other, since those always have massive amounts of spikes and horns to spare
There was no Greenstuff involved, though: I just cut them off something and glued them straight to a regular CSM head. I positioned them at slightly different angles, so it would look more like some kind of random mutation. But it was a fairly simple thing with zero GS (or skill) involved

Hey everyone,

a couple of news -- although I have to warn you that this update will be rather short on the actual painting and modelling front

First of all, I decided on a name for my Chaos Dread! Thanks to all those who submitted a suggestion! Lots of awesome ideas, and you can rest assured that I'll be using most of these for one of my models at some point
That said, there is a winner: Congratulations to Squigsquasher for his entry! My Dread will be called Khoron the Undying (just added an "h" to his suggestion). Huzzah!

I used my freshly named Dread in a campaign game against cousin Andy at the FLGS. You'll see in a minute how that went - in case you're interested, that is. I'll just be putting the actual battle report in spoiler tags, so those who don't give a hoot are free to ignore it The battle gave me a great excuse to write some more fluff about the 4th assault company, so here it is: After having lost the Eldar artifact called "The Hammer of Vaul" to an alliance of Craftworlders and their dark kin, Huntmaster Charun is eager for revenge:

The sky was iron grey. The coming storm painted the lush green plains in an evil green, its hue almost neon. Memnar and Bruul were standing at the front of the World Eaters’ force, looking down into the valley basin that would form the stage for today’s battle.

“Almost like an arena, eh brother?” Bruul asked.

“Aye, and we know well how to fight in those.” Memnar looked at the sky: “This weather is ill news, though. It’ll be a downpour before long”

“Don’t tell me a Huntsman of the 4th is afraid of a few drops?”

“Visibility will be poor. The ground will turn into mud. But the water is the least of our concerns, to be sure.” Memnar pointed at the advancing enemy force, visible to the south: “Something is different.”

Bruul nodded. This was not what they had expected. The Xenos were advancing, seemingly to meet the World Eaters head on. This was uncommon. And their lines seemed different too. Instead of fast skimmers and the lithe forms of the Eldar warriors, they could make out huge, misshapen creatures, like nightmares become flesh.

Suddenly thunder growled in the distance and jagged lightning danced across the sky. The first drops of rain were quick to follow.

“It begins.”

Suddenly, there was some unrest among the legionnaires at their back. Bruul and Memnar turned around to see Lord Charun marching through the ranks and appearing at the front line. There was murder in his eyes.

“Hunters of the 4th assault company”, he roared, “we march into battle today to reclaim our pride.”

“He must mean his own pride”, Bruul muttered under his breath. “I don’t recall losing mine.”

“It seems the enemy wants to meet us head on”, Charun continued. “By all means, let us grant their wish! No one can hope to defeat the World Eaters at close quarters!”

A cheer went up around them, but Bruul and Memnar just looked at each other knowingly. It was happening again.

The rain had intensified, battering down in huge sheets of water now. Memnar cleared his throat and spoke up:

“My lord, these Xenos are devious. It seems strange that they would move to meet us in the open. Something is amiss here. Maybe we should…”

His voice faltered when Charun turned to face him. In three short steps, he had reached Memnar. Charun’s teeth were bared, and there was something horrifyingly feral in the Huntmaster’s eyes.

“Stand down, Hunter!”, he hissed, “Stand down or stand back! Either way, I will have my hunt. I will have my revenge. Be careful, lest you end up as the first kill this day.”

Memnar stared back for a moment, then bowed his head. “I did not mean to presume, my lord. Lead the way.”

Charun’s eyes were slits now. “I shall, hunter. Khorne knows I shall.” He marched past Memnar to the front of the lines.

Charun drew his nightmare weapon. Its azure glow bathing him in a ghostly glare. The rain was falling heavily now, but it instantly evaporated where it hit the daemonsword’s blade.

“Looks like there are two daemons on the battlefield this day.” Bruul muttered.

“Aye, and it’s the unbound one that scares me.” Memnar gazed at Charun for a moment longer. Then he put on his helmet. “Take care brother, lest you become the prey.”

“And you.” Bruul answered. Their respective squads fell into formation behind them.

“Harriers, with me!”, Charun roared, “Hunters, show the enemy no mercy. Give no quarter. TEAR. THEM. APART!”

The actual battle report starts here:

Spoiler:

If only it had been that easy… But I am getting ahead of myself! So first things first: Let me start with a warning, perhaps: This post will be rather wordy, so if you like your blogging brief and succinct, you might be better served elsewhere.

With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the next game in our ongoing campaign for the fate of the Haestia system. This time, it was cousin Andy’s Dark Eldar against my World Eaters again. We played at 1.000 points per side and, very true to the piece of background above, decided on annihilation as the mission type.

1000 points were admittedly a bit of a tight fit for me, but I managed to take along two squads of eight Berzerkers in Rhinos, one fully kitted out squad of eight Raptors, one Chaos Dreadnought for heavy fire support and, of course, Lord Charun who would join the Raptors.

Cousin Andy’s army was a combination of fast and deadly (the usual fast skimmers with a dash of firepower) and slow and deadly (two Chronoi and a squad of Grotestques, the latter one accompanied by Urien Rakarth). His troop choices were a rather small unit of Kabalite warriors and a bigger unit of Wracks. Also, we once again had the opportunity of using the FLGS’s amazing terrain:

After deploying our troops, we rolled for first turn and cousin Andy came out on top. Things didn’t get too ugly for me (yet), though: His attempts to destroy my Rhinos failed, and he spent most time maneuvring his models through the narrow space between two ruins.
When my turn came up, I was still a little unsure about how to proceed: My Rhinos moved towards the enemy at full speed, of course, but my Raptors were in a bit of a fix: Everything they could have hurt was hidden away in transports, while everything that wasn’t in transport looked like bad news. In true World Eaters fashion, I didn’t think things through and advanced on the Grotesques, hoping to rough them up a bit during the shooting phase. On the right flank, my Dread missed to hurt anything with his Autocannon, but at least he didn’t flip out and shoot at my own people.

When cousin Andy’s turn came up, things started to get rather unpleasant for me: Following the law of nature that the most recently painted model will always be taken out of the game first, Khoron the Undying was instantly destroyed when cousin Andy’s Ravager took a pot shot at him. “The Undying” indeed…

One of my Rhinos was immobilised, leaving the Berzerkers riding in it stranded pretty far away from where they actually needed to be. On the right flank, my other squad of Berzerkers was approached by the skimmer carrying the Wracks: this looked like a nice occasion for combat, so I decided to disembark the squad and prepare for battle.

My Raptors and Andy’s Grotesques soon found themselves locked in combat. At last, the workface of battle! But even though my brave World Eaters dished out quite a lot of damage, the Grotesques just rolled with the punches: not really a surprise at three wounds per model. Cousin Andy also had all kinds of evil gadgets in place to neutralise my attacks. At least the Grotesques didn’t do that much damage, but the overall result was still a little underwhelming, to say the least.

Things did pick up a bit in my next turn, when the Berzerkers on the left flank managed to immobilise and stun Andy’s venom. And while the combat between Charun’s Raptors and the Grotesques continued to be a rather grueling affair, the World Eaters actually managed to cause enough damage for the monsters to run away. Keep in mind, though, that none of them had yet been killed by my valiant legionnaires…

On the right flank, things also didn’t look all that promising, because the Wracks turned out to be quite a damage sponge as well.

When it was cousin Andy’s turn again, things really began to go south for me: On the left flank, a Chronos attacked my Berzerker squad, showering them with all kinds of corrosive liquids. Let me tell you this: Template weapons can be very bad news…

In the center, the Grotesques had managed to pull themselves together once more, so the battle continued. And my once proud Raptor squad started to melt away like a snowball on a particularly warm day in hell. Things didn’t look any better on my right, with the Wracks slowly chewing through my second Berzerker squad.

All of this wasn’t helped by the fact that I played with the strategic farsight of a chimpanzee on fire, making all kinds of tactical blunders and stupid decisions. This game was coming to an end, and it was not going to be a happy one…

The top of turn three saw my army completely annihilated — not a single model was left. One of my Rhinos and a lone Skull Champion had been the last to go, vapourised by shots from Andy’s Ravager and a bazillion of shots from the Kabalite Warriors, respectively.

The day was lost. And probably in the worst possible way. To add insult to injury, let me just show you the models I actually did manage to take out. Take a look:

I managed to take out TWO models all in all. I had also done all kinds of damage to cousin Andy’s vehicles and dealt a ton of damage to his grotesques, but in the end, those two up there were actually all I actually managed to kill. Quite an achievement for an army that’s supposedly great in close quarters combat…

I have to give it to cousin Andy though: He managed to be quite a gentleman about it. Mabe he was a little too gleeful for my taste when rolling about 25 dice to shoot at my last man standing, but I won’t hold it against him.

Without a doubt, I had been pounded into the ground. The World Eaters had lost a hex on the campaign map. Unfortunately, this also meant that I would have 50 points less to buy equipment during the next phase of our campaign. But for the time being, this was far outweighed by the feeling of utter defeat…

For those of you not interested in battle reports, here is the short version: I was pounded into the ground. It was horrible
With the battle soundly lost, it looks like Huntmaster Charun has a lot to answer for. Here's my fluff for the aftermath of the battle:

The spaceport’s tactical control center had been converted to serve as the 4th assault company’s command post for the Haestia campaign. A projection of the Mardias subcontinent was hanging in the middle of the room, casting a sickly green light on the attendees. The Huntmasters and their commanding officers were standing around in loose groups, conversing in hushed voices as they waited for Lord Lorimar.

Bardolf looked around. The amount of officers was astonishing. It seemed that much of the company had been assembled by now. The campaign was proving to be a challenge, but the World Eaters would rise to it.

“It has been some time, Bardolf.”

The voice was impossibly deep and metallic. Like it came from an iron grave. In a way, it did. Bardolf turned around to face Khoron the Undying. The Dreadnought’s huge frame was imposing, even for a warrior of the fourth. Bardolf had to look up to direct his gaze at the face Khoron had been wearing for the last millennia: a brass mask, wrought in the shape of a skull. Bardolf bowed his head respectfully.

“Well met, older brother. Indeed, it has been too long.” He looked up again. “I did not realise that you had made planetfall already.”

Khoron laughed. The sound recalled sheets of metal grinding against each other. A strange sound for a Dreadnought. Khoron took a step forward and Bardolf could see fresh damage on his armoured form. “Oh, I have been here for a while. As a matter of fact, I was quite honoured to accompany our brother Charun on his latest …sortie.”

“And quite a sortie it was”, came a new voice. Bardolf turned around to face the new arrival. It belonged to Hokar, Lorimar’s Master of the Guard. His Terminator armour was exquisitely crafted, forming a cowl in the shape of a snarling skull that cast a shadow over his pale features. His expression was utterly inscrutable. Nothing new there.

“I salute you, hunter”, Bardolf addressed him, “I thought you were campaigning in the Diammar sector.”

Hokar’s eyes were like shards of volcanic glass. “Indeed I was. But your inability to keep our brother Charun in check managed to end my hunt somewhat…prematurely. Or did you think our Lord Lorimar brought the majority of the company here for a spot of hiking?”

Bardolf let the slight pass without comment. “What of the first hunter?”

Hokar let out a sigh: “Skarn is hunting to the south. He has set his sights on the secondary Hive.”

Bardolf shook his head: “There is nothing there. The Hive has become a necropolis.”

“Then he shall find enough skulls at least.”, came a booming voice. Deracin joined them, the bionic implants that covered his scarred head glinting in the green half-light.

Bardolf looked at the Keeper of the Forge: “I am glad to see you are well, brother.”

Deracin guffawed: “I was a lot better when you didn’t get my Daemon Engines all shot up, Bardolf. See if I grant you any heavy fire support again.” But there was a glint of humour in his eyes.

Bardolf indulged him: “Grant it to Skarn, then. Maybe he has need of firepower, conquering that boneyard.”

“First hunter Skarn is scouting out the enemies’ defense at my behest.” The voice was not loud, but commanded instant attention.
Nobody knelt when Lorimar entered. To kneel was to be a slave, and no member of the World Eaters legion would ever be a slave again. At least, not to any mortal. But the Huntmasters bowed their heads in unison as their lord marched to the center of the cavernous chamber. His personal guard spread out around him in a wide circle, their only sound the soft scraping of their heavy armour.

“I salute you, hunters.”

Hokar addressed him: “We welcome you, Master of the Hunt. The council is assembled.”

Lorimar looked at each of them in turn. “I have called you here to discuss our strategy. This hunt has proven to be more challenging than we expected.”

“Aye, the hunters in charge do seem rather …challenged to me”, Deracin smirked. Bardolf noticed Charun in the distance, his face twisting into a sneer. He shot a sideways glance at Deracin and stepped forward.

“The Eldar have been a resourceful opponent thus far. We have begun to suspect that they are guarding something very important to their race. Some kind of artifact. This is the fulcrum on which their morale is turning. Take the artifact, and you break their resistance.” He glanced at Charun: “Unfortunately, a number of dubious tactical decisions have seen us defeated time and again, and the artifact has eluded us. We were rash where we should have been more cautious.”

Charun stepped forward as well, staring at Bardolf: “Your overcautious ways ill befit an officer of the XIIth Astartes legion, brother”

“As does your stupidity”, Bardolf replied.

“Since when is it stupid to do battle? It is what we live for!”

Bardolf felt his anger rising. “It is always foolish to pick battles you cannot hope to win. If you continue, your rope will have more black twists than red ‘ere long. Can you not feel it, Charun? The dirt of Mardias in your wounds, chafing against the inside of your armour?”

“The loss of the artifact was not my fault. The Eldar used vile sorcery.”

“Indeed”, Deracin growled, “whoever could have suspected that the Eldar would stoop so low as to use witchraft?” That earned him a number of low chuckles. Before Charun could turn to face him, Huntmaster Bafram spoke up:

“It seems that we should be sorry for actually doing battle instead of only sitting within our walls now. If so, I may have to go around making excuses to my prey before long, eh Bardolf?” There was a murmur of consenting voices, and Bardolf felt himself growing tense. Charun may have been a madman, but he was not without support within the company. Bardolf spoke again:

“We are hunters, not beasts. What we hunt, we take down. That is our way. It has always been our way. What of a hunter who forgets that, I ask? Can he be called a hunter at all? Or has he become something different?”

There was something dangerous in Charun’s voice when he answered, something barely restrained: “You want to lecture me on hunting, Bardolf? Don’t make a fool of yourself! I have been hunting, while you were safe behind the walls of Antilia.

“All that you have been hunting are ghosts! Instead, you should have exercised some caution”

“Your caution could be considered cowardice.”

“And your recklessness could be considered insanity”. Bardolf left the word hanging in the air, the accusation plain to understand. Indeed, the mood in the room had changed. The assembled Huntmasters understood what was at stake here.

As did Charun: His face was a mask of hatred, he almost spat his next words into Bardolf’s face. “Would you like to continue this argument under more …fitting circumstances, my brother? Should we perhaps conduct this discussion on the Hot Dust, do you think? Let us see who is right then!”

Bardolf realised that they had begun to slowly circle each other, as if they were in battle already.

“Enough!” The word was no more than a low growl, but it was enough to stop everyone in their tracks. Lorimar gazed at each of them in turn, his expression unreadable.

“I have need of a war council, yet all I hear is an assembly of old crones endlessly bickering. I am growing tired of this.” He turned to Charun:

“You will deploy to the southern plains with your retinue to form a reinforcement for Skarn’s hunting party. The Harriers still at the Y’lanth’Ine basin will remain where they are. Syrax, I trust you will command them wisely until such time as Huntmaster Charun rejoins you.”

Charun’s second in command seemed to have discovered something entirely mesmerizing on the floor in front of him. “Yes, m’lord”, he muttered in a low voice.

“My lord,” Charun seemed incredulous. “I beg you reconsider. There is little strategic value to the southern plains. I could serve the company better if I…”

Lorimar’s voice was icy: “The decision in what capacity you might benefit the company most is mine. Not yours. You may take your leave.”, he adressed the room in general: ““This meeting is adjourned. We shall speak more soon. May your prey be a worthy one. Bardolf and Khoron, you are staying with me. I would speak with you some more.”

The Huntmasters and their lieutenants left. Charun continued glowering for a moment, then he abruptly turned around and marched from the room as well. Bardolf could see that he was seething with ill-contained rage. He turned to Lord Lorimar:

“Charun is no longer sane. He cannot be trusted!”

“Charun is our brother. He has earned our trust. And our respect” Lorimar’s eyes were like cold fire.
Bardolf could not hold his gaze. Then Lorimar turned to Khoron: “What say you, old friend? I would hear your counsel.”

“This fighting amongst ourselves is unwise”, the Dreadnought growled. “A house divided cannot stand. Still, Bardolf has a point.”

Lorimar sighed: “The Butcher’s Nails have transformed Charun. They have transformed us all. Made us more than men. And less.” He was staring into space, at something only he could see.

“My lord, I am only concerned for the company’s survival.”

Lorimar turned to face Bardolf. “As am I. Charun is my concern. The plains of Mardias are yours.” Bardolf inclined his head. The discussion was over. “What of the other factions?”, Lorimar asked.

“It seems the Necrontyr have been sleeping for so long that they might have forgotten how to wake up altogether. We have only had superficial contact and some isolated sightings. For some reason, they are holding back.”

“And the Daemonkin at Candolfus?”

Khoron answered in his abyssal growl: “We cannot know who is in ascendance, so we had best be careful. The whole affair has the stench of Tzeentch upon it.”

“Aye.” Lorimar seemed lost in thought for a few moments, then he gazed at Bardolf:

“Gather a hunting party. I would look upon this prey with my own eyes. We march at first light.”

Sorry to those who are neither interested in fluff nor in battle reports! I realise this is a P&M blog, so I promise there'll be some actual P&M pretty soon

Thanks a lot guys! Glad you weren't bored to tears

@ Chaos Emperor: You know, Deracin is the only character in that story I don't have a model for yet. I originally wanted him to be some sort of Huron Blackheart conversion, but I might need to do something more involved. Hmm...

Alright, like I promised in my last post, this time there's actually something to look at

You may remember that I already posted this guy some time ago:

I built this one after reading Matthew Farrer's very nice short story "After De'shea" (which is unfortunately hidden away at the tail end of the slightly underwhelming “Tales of Heresy” collection of short stories). “After De’shea” does a great job of humanising Angron beyond his image of perpetual anger and frenzy. It is also one of the few sources of actually interesting background for the legion. And it talks about Angron's background as a gladiator: He was raised in an arena and thus learned to respect only strength and prowess in battle: Only those who had proven themselves in the arena – “on the hot dust” – were worthy of Angron’s respect, as his captains learned to their detriment when they first met their Primarch…

Anyway, having read the story, I wanted to build a model that channeled the gladiatorial traditions that Angron taught his legion. I wanted to build a true champion of the hot dust. Hence the model you can see above.

The model is a fairly simple conversion: I wanted it to look suitably gladiatorial, and I had wanted to build a Marine with a “bare” torso for quite some time. All it took was the right selection of bits: The model uses the legs of a Khorne Berzerker and the torso of a WFB Chaos Marauder. The left arm is from the WFB Bestigor standard bearer. It was crucial to have one arm still armoured, so I used a regular CSM arm and a Khorne-themed shoulderpad. The sword is from the WFB Warriors of Chaos. And finally, the part that really made the model: The head is a Grey Knights head, although it looks like it was made for a World Eater. The bulky implants on the back of the head are ideal to represent the “Butcher’s Nails”, and the expression of anger mixed with disdain is a perfect fit for a true arena champion.

I also used a tabard from the Thousand Sons conversion kit with an added skull trophy. I didn’t use a backpack, since that would just have ruined the model’s silhouette, in my opinion.

The paintjob was a fairly straightforward affair as well — I just used my normal World Eaters recipe. However, the model obviously has more bare skin than my usual World Eaters which makes for an interesting colour contrast.

Here’s the finished model:

I am rather fond of him, if I do say so myself. I think he really gets the point across, looking like a true gladiator should. I didn’t build this model with an actual function in mind, although I guess he would make a rather nice Skull Champion for one of my Berzerker squads. Maybe I’ll even build some friends for him, so I have a small squad of World Eaters gladiators, just as tipios and Biohazard suggested a while back. Hmmm… I guess I’ll postpone that decision until the new book hits – there have been rumours of some gladiatorial unit or other for the World Eaters, after all…

To wrap up this post, here he is once again, posing in front of some killer terrain at the FLGS:

As always, thanks for looking! C&C always welcome!

Holy ! I'm jealous!

The only point that could have been improved is the TS loincloth. A GS replica would have been easier to adapt to the marauder's waist (Cough!Instamold!Cough!!).

Otherwise, it's the great realisation of a great idea, with great painting and modelling skills.

Nice job! I've already commented on the model itself, but the paint job really brings it to life. The face in particular is very nice. How did you paint the pale skin?

that is so good!! i love this conversion. looking at it i've had an idea for a khorne lord, using the gladiator look as the basis. it turn out to be a shameless rip off though!!
was thinking CSM legs, chainblade arm, khorne shoulder pad, another chainblade to make a massive chain-claymore sword, maruarder torso, some other arm, and a FW bezerker re-breather head with a GS chain mail cloak.
any way, i love that guy and would love to see a whole unit of them, but a future codex unit for khorne gladiators you say...

bring on a world eaters Codex!!! or any king of slighty chaos-y release really.

Thanks a lot, guys!

@ Hyenajoe: You're quite right! The tabard was me being a little lazy Although I have to say I am usually a bit reluctant to use anything GS-related, since I am not really good at it (yet). Looks like I just need a little more practice

@ Yellowbeard: The skin is a really simple recipe: Paint with GW Dheneb Stone (the new Rakarth flesh probably looks similar), wash with Badab Black, then go back and add some subtle accents with Dheneb Stone -- presto!
You can also replace Badab Black with Ogryn Flesh for a slightly unhealthy but more "alive" look. Compare my Traitor Guard soldiers for reference.

@ Chaos Emperor: Go for it, mate! There can never be enough gladiators in the World Eaters legion

Once again, thanks a lot, guys!

@ Biohazard: My recipe for brass is also very easy (I am a sucker for easy recipes ): First, a coat of Tin Bitz -- I recently switched to Vallejo's Tinny Tin which is an exact match and goes on even smoother. DO NOT use GW's new Warplock Bronze! It may be a nice colour in its own right, but it's a horrible replacement for Tin Bitz.
After the basecoat, wash liberally with Devlan Mud. And finally, drybrush a very slight Highlight onto the raised parts using GW Dwarf Bronze (or Vallejo's Brassy Brass). Done!

Thanks Miss Dee and tipios!

@ Miss Dee: Actually, they are all called hunters, that being my army's whole shtick

I did come up with fitting names for the different arms of the company, though:

Berzerkers/infantry: Huntsmen
Raptors: Harriers
Bikers: Hounds
Possessed: The Lost (doesn't have anything to do with hunting, but it still makes a lot of sense in my fluff )

There are also specific officer ranks:

The company's officers are calles "Huntmasters". The leader of the company is the "Master of the Hunt", while his second-in-command is the "First Hunter". And there's also the Master of Rites who is called "Keeper of Trophies". And so on...

And here's a couple of small things I am working on at the moment, just to round out the weekend

First up, a couple of WIP shots of a mini-diorama I am doing for my World Eaters.

Naturally, there can be no true hunt without any hounds. So I got myself some Chaos Hounds and tried to figure out a paint scheme for them. Here’s what I came up with:

Like I said, those hounds will form a part of a mini-diorama, with one of the 4th assault company’s Huntmasters close behind, siccing the beasts on some unfortunate prey. However, I have yet to paint the Huntmaster in question. I want all the models in the diorama to still be usable on the table, so they all have their separate bases that can be easily slotted into the bigger base. Here it is without the hounds:

I really like those hounds and would like to find some way of being able to use them in the game. I may actually end up fielding them as lesser demons. The idea of having huge, mutated hounds accompanying Khorne’s Eternal Hunt into battle (and being summoned with the hunter’s horns) is just too cool to pass up!

The second thing I am working on is a true blast from the past: Thanks to my fellow Khornate slaughterer and all-around great guy Biohazard (once again), I found myself in the possession of some old plastic Khorne Berzerkers from the early 90s. I couldn’t help myself and had to start painting one of those guys right away. Here’s where he’s at right now:

I really like this model a lot! Granted, the sculpt is a little flat and the pose seems slightly awkward, but this little guy still holds up fairly well next to his younger brothers. And I really don’t understand why they abandoned that helmet design, since it’s definitely cooler than some of the more recent Berzerker helmets. Anyway, I’ll still have to do a few touchups on this guy, and he’s lacking a backpack, but you can see where this is headed. Thanks a lot to Biohazard for his continued generosity!

Alright, that’s it basically. Have a great Sunday!

The hounds look great, KS. Nice work on the bloody muzzles. For the huntsman, are you going to have him standing, commanding the hounds to attack, maybe pointing? Or will he be running after the hounds?

Nice work on the berzerker, too.

Thanks Yellowbeard!

The Huntmaster will be based on a WFB Khorne champion, combined with a two-handed axe from a different model. He will be hefting his axe, looking after the hounds with an angry look that says "You're sooo gonna get it now!" Although due to the modular nature of the "diorama", it'll be quite easy to swap him out with a specially constructed model if the pose doesn't work for some reason.

@ fatty: Cheers, mate!

I spent my hobby time during the last days painting a rather complex model for my INQ28 collection (go take a look in my other thread, in case you're interested ), so there's only something small today, to tide you over until the next, regular update

I finished the old plastic Berzerker Biohazard gave me:

I realise that I should have given him one of the old Berzerker backpacks for the sake of authenticity, but I hate painting those sooo much, so I went for a newer one

Anyway, nothing big, but I still like this little guy

Thanks again, fatty! Do you have any pictures of your WE army? I would like to take a look!

Alright, everyone, in preparation for a possible new Chaos Codex, let’s look at another model that may yet prove pretty useful once the new book hits.

But first, a bit of a foreword, if I may: I can still remember the Chaos Lord I built for my first WFB army in the mid-nineties. I combined a WFB champion of Chaos with a metal Juggernaut of Khorne and ended up with a model that was massive, very cool and quite heavy. Here’s what he looked like, by the way:

Granted, the paintjob is definitely nothing to write home about, but that was a long time ago. I can still remember the stiflingly hot afternoon when I got home with my purchases, sat down, built the model and painted it right away in one session. Like so often in my hobby life, I felt that it coudn’t possibly get any better than this (on a related note, I could still kick myself today for giving away the World Eater that came with the juggernaut. Oh well…).

But time went on, I stopped playing Warhammer and took a break from the hobby altogether. Then, a couple of years ago, the new plastic juggernauts were released, and it was only a question of time until I would follow the pull of my addiction. And so, after hopelessly losing a game of 40k against cousin Andy at the FLGS, I comforted myself by buying the shiny Bloodcrusher kit.

And what a kit it is: The plastic juggernauts combine all that was great about the previous jugger incarnations (the basic design, the sheer brutality) and drop all that was horrible about the old model (the weight, the nearly unsalveagable, static pose). There’s also lots and lots of cool bits and bobs for use in a Khorne-themed army. So I got to work, and soon this guy was standing before me:

Those of you familiar with what it is that makes World Eaters players tick probably have an idea where this is going……and you would be right, of course

Ever since the Bloodcrusher kit came out, World Eaters players all over the world have started to convert “Brazen Knights”: Legionnaires of the World Eaters mounted atop huge juggernauts of Khorne. Even the fact that the current book doesn’t offer any option of using such a squad (apart from the lone Lord on a juggernaut, which, I am led to believe, is not really worth the hassle) didn’t manage to dissuade them from building the models: World Eaters on juggernauts are a prospect that is just too tempting to ignore!

Many World Eaters players play their army using the Space Wolves codex, so they can use the Brazen Knights as Thunderwolves. But I have always stuck to the actual Chaos codex. So when I built my own Brazen Knights, it was not in order to use them, but just for the joy of building them. However, there are several rumours about Brazen Knights being featured in the new Codex — we will see…

But enough talk. What I want to show you today is the first Brazen Knight I built. I’ll have to come clean right now and admit that the pose of my test model for the squad was stolen wholesale from one of Sprugly’s amazing Jugger-Knights here:

http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?286979-So-many-models-so-little-time-Sprugly-s-blog/page6

Check out his thread! It’s fantastic!

Anyway, here is my model:

I used a standard Khorne Berzerker model with a couple of added bitz: The weapon arm is from the WFB Chaos Knights, while the shield came from the Chaos Marauders. The Brazen Knight’s helmet was converted by adding Khornate “bunny ears” to one of the head options from the Chaos Terminator Lord kit.

When painting the model, I decided not to paint the juggernaut in the same red as the World Eater riding it. Instead I went for a darker shade of the colour I normally use on my World Eaters’ daemon weapons. I think it makes for a nice colour contrast between rider and juggernaut (and, come to think of it, adds a nice bit of consistency to my army, with everything of “daemonic” origin using the same basic colour).

Last but not least, here’s a closer look at the base, with an unfortunate loyal Terminator trampled underfoot:

I have already assembled two more Brazen Knights. One of them will use another lance from the WFB Chaos Knights, while the third one will be outfitted so he can also be used as a Chaos Lord on juggernaut and will look the part. While the models are basically complete, I am still trying different head options for them (the Lord currently has Inquisitor Coteaz’ head. It’s quite a nice fit). This model was basically my test piece for the squad.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the new codex offers any rules for actually using these guys on the table. But even if it doesn’t, it’s a conversion any World Eaters player worth his salt should have done at least once!

Let me know what you think! As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

@fatty: Definitely some nice ideas among those models! I especially like the Lord with his robes and the piece of Soulgrinder armour used as a storm shield. Good catch, mate!

@ Brymm: Cheers, mate!

@ Yellowbeard: That coulour on my juggernaut is not actually metallic. Must be the lighting in the photos making it look more awesome than it actually is I just darkened down Halcon Turquoise with Chaos Black and used it as a base colour. Then I did the highlights in a lighter shade of the same colour.

I did actually consider adding OSL to the Juggers eyes, but ultimately decided against it. I think the eyes have enough "pop" as it is, and I am a little afraid of having the red OSL look more like strawberyy sauce

@ Biohazard: Thanks, buddy! Glad you like him

Today I want to show you all another squad of my traitors that serve as auxiliary troops to my World Eaters during the campaign we are currently playing. One box of Cadians and Chaos Marauders each gave me enough parts to build the Platoon Command Squad (which I already posted) as well as two squads of traitors. Here's the first of them. Once again, I wanted the squad’s loyalist origins to show thorugh while also leaving no doubt as to their current allegiance.

I think the squad has a nice mixture of standard Imperial and more primitive elements. Some of the soldiers look quite a lot like loyalists (the chap on the right, for example), while others are channeling a more barabarian vibe. I also added an icon bearer, because I am of the opinion that every squad in every Chaos force needs an icon, if only for flavour. As you can see, the squad also has a traitor carrying a flamer.

Once again, the models were kitbashed from Cadians, Chaos Marauders, Marauder Horsemen, Warriors of Chaos and the odd Chaos Space marine part. As you can see, the Marauder and Cadian parts fit together rather nicely, allowing for a lot of customisation options. From a WYSIWYG perspective, the squad’s equipment seems rather hodgepodge. But then, it certainly adds some flavour to the unit. It also means that they can be used with different weapon loadouts depending on the army list I use for them — and the fact that they are not strictly WYSIWYG shouldn’t be a problem for the most part, as long as my opponent knows in advance what he’s up against.

And finally, let’s have a look at some detail shots of the squad leader:

The head from the Marauder Horsemen kit gives this guy an almost Viking vibe. It also looks like he also salvaged some Marine armour parts from the battle field. The fact that he uses it to on his arms while his torso remains pretty much unprotected shows that this armour is worn for decoration almost as much as for protection. Looking at him now, I also realise that is sword is not entirely straight, but I guess I’ll have to live with it now…

There’s one more squad of the same size where these came from, although I have yet to paint it. I have also begun looking at options of giving these guys some kind of transport, though I will probably eschew the classic option of using a converted Chimera in favour of a more “creative” approach. I am also not that big on tanks, so don’t expect this turning into a heavily mechanised army anytime soon…

And with that, my next batch of traitors is complete. As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Ahh, now I see! You know, we're actually holding a little contest over at Throne of Skulls atm where the objective is to actually build a loyal Marine who is on his path to the worship of Khorne. The results will be posted early next week, I imagine. Here's the link in case you're interested:

I'll also be posting my own contribution here as soon as the contest is over.

I also recall somebody doing a really nifty conversion of a corrupted Ultramarine. I think it was over on ToS as well. Hmmm...

Ha, I have resisted the temptation of using the Codex for Russ' dogs so far, so I am definitely not going to cave in now That said, I'll keep my fingers crossed for the new Chaos book to solve the problem for me ...in cae it's not totally horrible, that is. And another update. I admit that the model I'd like to show you today is only connected to my World Eaters in a very roundabout way, but I promise it'll all make sense in the end

Anyway, back when I got back into the hobby in late 2010, my cousin Andy, who had gotten me back on board with 40k in the first place, was in a bit of a fix: He really liked the Dark Eldar, but a new Codex had recently been released, along with spectacular new models. “How is that bad?”, I hear you asking. Well, along with the nice new rules and models came lots and lots of bandwagon players, enjoying the new “flavour of the month army”, and that wasn’t for Andy, who, generally speaking, enjoys making his hobby life harder for himself than it strictly needs to be. So he set aside his Dark Eldar and turned his attention to the only army list even less supported by GW than the old DE had been: The Lost and the Damned.

Soon Andy had begun collecting a small combined force of Deathguard Marines, traitors and mutants. He also bought a box of Ogres to serve as big mutants, and as with all things Nurgle, they would have to be converted to look suitably gross and disease-ridden. That’s where I came in. I had cooked up a couple of ideas for Plague Ogryns in the back of my head, and so I asked Andy if I could convert them for him. He agreed, netting me the opportunity of trying my hand at Greenstuff for the first time ever.

A short while later, my first Plague Ogryn was finished. Here it is:

Be gentle, people, it’s my first GS work

As you can see, I tried to make this guy look a bit like a large Plague Bearer, giving him a single eye and horn. I also took a rather primitive stab at modelling entrails, as per SvartMetall’s fantastic tutorial (to be found here: http://www.heresy-online.net/forums/showthread.php?t=28554 ). And before anyone brings this up: Yes, I am quite aware that a creature lacking virtually all of its abdominal muscles would have a pretty hard time moving at all, least of all walking upright. Chill out, Biology majors! We’re strictly talking Rule of Cool here. And the Ogre already had that gaping hole in his belly, so what was I to do?

Anyway, I was reasonably pleased with my first GS work and built two more Plague Ogryns, implementing most of the ideas I had wanted to try. And so cousin Andy ended up with a suitably Nurge-y set of models. All’s well that ends well, right?

Alas, it was not to be: Andy found out the LNTD army list didn’t do much for him, and so after the bandwagon players had moved on (to the Grey Knights, IIRC), he rejoined the ranks of the sinister and depraved Space Elves, amongst which he may still be found to this day. Meanwhile, the Plague Ogryns I had so lovingly crafted, went to his cupboard of shame, there to moulder in obscurity until the end of days — what a fitting fate for the servants of Nurgle!

Until I recently visited cousin Andy and got it into my head to paint up one of those guys for the sheer heck of it. Fortunately for me, Andy let me have my way once again, and so I got to work. I got the model in the state you saw above, with only a quick drybrush of green laid down as a basic skin colour. Working from there, I painted him up in one afternoon. Here he is, in all his pestilential glory:

As you can see, I kept the green skin, but added a couple of additional hues to the mix. I also tried to paint the metal parts of the model to look rusty and worn. And finally, this model marked not only my first attempts at GS work, but also my first use of the legendary Tamiya Clear Red: I used it to paint the Ogryn’s belly wound in a suitably wet and gory manner, then stippled it onto the various sores and boils I had modelled onto the skin as well to make them look like they were weeping some kind of bloody ichor. My overall goal was to have the model look as disgusting as I could possibly make it. I’ll let you decide whether I succeeded.

It is true that Nurgle models are always great fun to convert and paint! But how does this all connect to my World Eaters, you ask? Well, working on this model proved to be a great test run for my own big mutants/Ogryn berserkers (who are also be based on WFB Ogres, but are looking pretty different) which I am going to show you in the very near future

Until then, as always, thanks you for looking! Stay tuned for more!

Thanks, guys! I've found that the trick to doing really rusty metal is to not paint it in metallics and then do the weathering, but to do it in different shades of brown and then stipple on the metallics. It's not brain surgery, of course, but that really saves a lot of work

Thanks a lot, bigfish!

I'm on a working trip tomorrow, so the next update's a little early for a change

Having worked on cousin Andy’s Plague Ogryn recently, I really wanted to finish up the first big mutants for my own Traitor Guard. In keeping with the overall flexibility of my Traitors so far, I wanted the models to be usable as Big Mutants (LNTD), Ogryn Berserkers (Vraks Renegade Militia) or straight up Ogryns (IG).

It really took me quite a while to get these guys to look cool, though. Here’s why:

First of all, instead of just going for hideously mutated beasts, I wanted the models to look more like corrupted Ogryns. It’s a recurring visual motif with my traitors that their worship of Chaos may be clearly visible, but you can also tell that they used to be “normal” Imperial soldiers at one point. I wanted to convey that feeling with my mutants as well, so I began to look at (corrupted) Ogryns for inspiration.

It didn’t take me long to get to the FW Renegade Ogryn Berserkers, of course. Those guys are really great for a number of reasons: They look like really bad news, for one. Then there’s the fact that you can tell that they used to be regular workers: They are still using their old tools, or at least improvised weapons made from their tools. And finally, while they are not really all that mutated, all those cables, tubes and “augmentations” suggest some horrible experimentation and make it clear that the Ogryns were “transformed” into something dangerous and disturbing by way of crude surgery.

That’s really a look I wanted to emulate with my own Renegade Ogryns. I am not a big fan of over-the-top mutations, or rather: I only like them when they are done really well. Mutations can often end up making a model look really goofy, so I decided to restrict the amount of “regular” mutations on the models, instead opting to use all kinds of crude surgical “improvements”. Oh, and I wanted the models to be all plastic, which left me with few options. I decided to use regular WFB Ogres, seeing as they are readily available and look similar enough to 40k Ogryns.

There was a number of problems, though: The old Ogre models are very static and not nearly as flexible as I would have liked. I also needed to “40k-ify” them enough to actually make them look like models from the dark future. Plus I felt that my GS skills might not actually be up to the task.

I built a proof-of-concept model, but I felt like the whole thing was not really getting off the ground. For a time, I also wished that I had gone with Minotaurs as a base for my mutants in the first place. Was I doomed to fail?

But then painting that lone Plague Ogryn really reinvigorated me: The model was a lot of fun to paint, and I could really see myself having a similar amount of fun with my own Renegade Ogryns, once they had been converted. So I sat down again and finally finished the first two models.

First up, the first model I built (but actually the last to be finished). I had picked up a box of Ironguts as a base for the conversions, since I felt that the additional armoured parts would probably make the models more interesting to look at. So I used some arms from the kit and a couple of other bits to give the model an armoured look.

Here’s a first look at the finished conversion:

There was little to be done about the Ogre’s overall body shape without massive amounts of work, so I contented myself with a slight repositioning of the arms to make the model look more imposing (and less like it was marching in an organised WFB regiment). Even that took quite a bit of GS work, and the rough job I did on it was almost enough to put me off the model for good. I added some rough stitches to the skin to make it look like the Ogryn had been subjected to some rather primitive surgery, and hoped I could salvage the whole thing with my paintjob…

The basic conversion mainly uses parts from the Ironguts kit, with extra gut plates used as shoulder armour. I also used a crude sword and a vicious gauntlet to make this guy look suitably dangerous. A Chaos Marauder shield was added to replace the regular gut plate and show the Ogryn’s new allegiance.

The main conversion was the back of the model: I wanted to add a horrible, exposed spine on the model’s back, so I greenstuffed the whole area as well as I could (which, admittedly, is not saying much). I added more stitches to the skin and also attached two stimulant vials (from the DE Talos/Cronos kit) to show that the Ogryn had been outfitted with some sort of combat drug dispenser.

What really saved the conversion for me was the idea to convert the helmet to a closed variant and to add some goggles made from the muzzles of a Chaos vehicle grenade launcher. Before, the Ogryn had just looked like an Irongut with a lot of greenstuff on his back. Now, the model looked like it actually belonged in the 40k universe.

Fortunately, the second model was far more straightforward. I wanted this guy to sport an even more heavily augmented look, with lots and lots of crude implants, so I used lots of cables and technical bits from my bitzbox. Here is the result:

I used a head with a huge metal plate. Combined with some cables and a speaker from a Cadian Voxcaster, this made the guy look like he had received some extensive cranial surgery. Ewww…

The model’s left forearm was replaced with a Chaos Lord’s chainfist, since you can never possibly have enough chainsaws in a 40k army. I also shortened the arm a bit to make the augmentation look slightly awkward. As a contrast, I wanted the right arm to look slightly too long and somewhat twisted, so I added an arm from the old Chaos mutations sprue. I also used some of the same armour plates my traitors are wearing. They seem to be bolted onto the Ogryns skin for extra protection, visually tying him together with the human traitors (and masking some rough spots on his arm in the process…).

I managed to find a nondescript bit (it might be from an Ork kit, but I am not sure) with some tubes and primitive pressure indicators, which made a fantastic addition for the model’s back, further enforcing the impression that the Ogryn had been “modified” with all kinds of crude technology. This time, there was really no danger that the model would be mistaken for a WFB Ogre…

So both models were affix’d to my trusty paint pots of doom, and I started working on them. I really wanted them to look like they had been attached to the same regiment as the rest of my traitors, so I basically used exactly the same colours. Here they are with just the base colours laid down:

Then came the washes and the detailing. Working on these two, I once again realised that I was giddily awaiting the moment where the washes came on, since they always manage to transform the model and bring it alive.

I only allowed myself two small departures from my usual recipe: I added a bigger amount of weathering to their equipment, representing the fact that it is probably less well-cared-for than that of the human traitors. And I added some extra bruising to their skin around the scars and implants in order to make the mechanical parts look even more rough and brutal. A bit of red and purple wash can really go a long way…

The models were actually a blast to paint! The larger scale allowed for much quicker work and made some effects much easier to pull off. Finally, I added some fitting bases to the two Ogryns, and they were done:

The brusing of the skin came out really nice, although it’s not all that visible in these pictures. Take a look at the model’s shoulders though, and you’ll see what I mean.

I added some primitive chaos iconography to the model’s gauntlet. It’s another recurring visual element in my Traitor Guard, so it made a lot of sense to include it here.

While the GS job on the model’s back still looks kind of rough, the paintjob really managed to make it appear somewhat believable, I think. What a relief!

Here’s the second model:

This guy was a little easier to paint, since he had been much easier to convert and didn’t need any “saving” in the first place.

I added a bit of gore to the chainfist, since leaving it looking brand new would probably have seemed a little strange.

Once again, I was pretty happy with the way the bruised skin came out. Take a look at the area around the cables on his left shoulder.

I even painted the little indicators to show that this guy is really running at full throttle

And with that, my first two Renegade Ogryns were finished! I was pretty happy with them, especially since I had almost given up hope on the squad to actially take shape. For the rest of the squad, I will probably do one or two additional Ogryns. I already have a couple of ideas up my sleeve too: I’d like one of those guys to carry a huge gatling-gun (no matter whether he can actually use it…Rule of Cool and all that), while another will probably be a little more mutated. And then Biohazard gave me a very nice Ogre from one of the new kits. He looks really badass, so I’ll have to add him to the squad as well.

The difficult first step is accomplished. From now on, it’ll be a lot easier, I guess.

Let me know what you think of these guys! As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks a lot, guys! I also have something new for you to look at:

There are some days on the grimdark battlefields of the 41st millennium when just shooting at your opponent’s not enough. That goes double if you are a deathless slaughterer in the service of the Blood God. And sometimes, even your trusty chainaxe, power fist or lightning claws are not enough. Sometimes, all those tools of destruction just won’t cut it. But a buzzsaw will.

Alright, enough with the sales pitch. However, that was more or less my train of thought when I found myself in the possession of a nice and brutal looking buzzsaw from an Ork Dread. What better use for this nice little tool than to transform it into a weapon for one of Khorne’s Chosen? And who better to wield a gigantic circular saw than the venerable Brother Khoron the Undying?

I knew from GuitaRasmus’ thread that buzzsaws on Chaos Dreads were a great idea, so I set off to fashion a nice CC arm out of the saw and a couple of bits. The obvious way would have been to use a regular CC arm. However, I was pretty enamoured with the idea of building the saw as an optional weapon, using the Venerable Dread kit’s cleverly designed system for exchanging weapons.

So I used the basic socket at the end of an unused Assault cannon, added a leftover bit from the Furioso kit to slightly lengthen the arm and the buzzsaw bit. Here’s the finished arm fitted onto the Dread:

Granted, the arm looks a bit less flexible than a true CC arm, but the weapon can now be easily exchanged with minium hassle. A small price to pay for maximum versatility. The saw also looks a little orky, but not so much that it wouldn’t be believable as a Chaos weapon.

I quickly painted the new weapon in my tried and true World Eaters recipe. A short while after, Khoron had a new toy, the better to spill blood for the Blood God:

Although I am usually a little hesitant about adding blood to weapons (since there’s a marked tendency for the whole thing to end up looking like it’s covered in strawberry sauce), there was simply no way I could have the saw looking like it was brand new. So I took a piece of blister sponge and the ever useful Tamiya Clear Red and got to work:

Although it might need a few small touchups here and there, the fluid covering the saw certainly doesn’t look like it came from something growing on a bush

And with that, yet another weapons option was finished. This one allows me to run Khoron with two CC weapons whenever Marax the Fallen has his day off (or I want to run two CC Dreads in the same game). I also realised that I now had a silly amount of different weapon options for use on my Dread. Take a look:

From left to right, you can see the basic arm construction with the insets for the Plasma Cannon, Lascannon and CC arm respectively. There are even more options when I add the Autocannon and Heavy Bolter Arms I built:

And of course there’s always the surplus Heavy Bolter given to me by Biohazard. Lots and lots of lovely tools of destruction. Gotta love it, right?

Anyway, who knows what crazy kind of power tool will be the next to be added to Khoron the Undying’s tool shed? In any case, I’ll keep you updated!

Right, before I wrap up this post, just a little note from the editor’s desk: For those of you interested in my army's fluff, I have added a background section to my blog, outlining the fluff behind my own army, Khorne's Eternal Hunt, in the style of the old Index Astartes articles, and presenting the most prominent characters of the 4th assautl company. Take a look if you're into this kind of thing!

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Nice work, KS! I think the buzzsaw looks great. Good job on the blood, too. I think blood is overdone sometimes, but I think you got the right amount on. Is the Tamiya Clear Red that glossy or did you add gloss coat after?

Nice write up on your army, too. I really like Kharduun. Not sure how I missed him before....

Cheers, guys!

@ Eiríkr: A cup of blood would be the better drink to go with the fluff, of course, but how would a Slaaneshi dog like you know that, right?

@ Yellowbeard: What you see is the paint exactly how it came from the pot! It stays glossy and has a wonderful, wet look. The only thing I do from time to time is to add some Tamiya clear red mixed with a drop of Scorched Brown or Chaos Black on top to add a little more depth to the blood. That stuff is magical! Plus one pot of it will probably last you for a looong time.

Dude, I didn't even think of that! I just added that bit to make the arm a bit longer, so the Dread wouldn't suffer from "Tyrannosaurus Rex" syndrome. But you are right, it really looks like it was done that way on purpose...

...which it was, of course. I totally planned that. Like, for real

I told you before that deciding on a course of action for converting my Ogryn Berserkers was pretty hard at first. Well, third time’s a charm, or so they say, so my third corrupted Ogryn was actually much easier to conceptualise and build.

Once again, fellow Chaos-worshipper Biohazard provided the main ingredient for this project: He had sent me an Ogre belonging to the Scraplauncher/Ironblaster kit some time ago. The great thing about the model was that its pose was much more intimidating than that of the regular Ogres. Combine that with the idea of a huge gatling gun, and something to make the Ogryn look suitably corrupted by the ruinous powers, aaaand…well, here’s what I managed to cook up:

As you can see, this guy actually did get a huge gun: It was spliced together from a Chaos Termie Lord’s Bolter and the barrels from a leftover Dreadnought assault cannon. Of course I also had to add a backpack with lots of ammo to the model’s back.

The other very prominent feature of this model is the horrible, prehensile tongue emerging from the Ogryn’s gaping maw. While this guy lacks his squadmates’ crude implants, I wanted to show that the powers of chaos had still found a way of corrupting him, albeit in a more direct way. So in a moment of inspiration, I cut off the Ogryn’s lower jaw and added a tentactle from the old Chaos mutation sprue. The Ogre body also has all kinds of wickedly sharp metal shards punched through the skin, so this fact in combination with the mutated head made the model look suitably twisted.

So I got to work on the paintjob with the intention of lavishing some extra attention on the model’s mouth, in order to make it look really disturbing. Apart from that, I used the same recipe as I did with the other Ogryns. Here’s the finished model:

To be honest, I am really happy with how this guy turned out! The model’s pose and weapon are a perfect fit, and the mouth and tongue are just horrible (in a good way), which makes this Ogryn a true centrepiece for the squad. I also added some spent shell cases and a skull with a bullet hole to his base as small visual flourishes.

Like I said, I took some extra care to make his mouth and tongue look as disgusting as possible. Once again, Tamiya Clear Red was an indispensable tool: I stippled it into the mouth cavity, onto the model’s chest and on the tongue for the extra wet and gory look:

All in all, this guy is really quite a monster, don’t you think?

With a model count of three, this squad is now also legally playable as Ogryns or Big Mutants. Here’s a shot of the squad so far:

A bit like the three Stooges, huh? In any case, there’s really no mistaking them for loyal Ogryns, is there?

I’ll probably add another model to the squad, but it’s in an early WIP state at the moment.

Let me know what you think! As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks a lot, rodgers37! I also have some more World Eaters goodness for you people to look at:

Say about the new 40k rules what you want: One change I as a World Eaters player can only applaud is the addition of challenges. It’s easy to see why I might be in favour of this: It’s a cool way of adding cinematic moments to a game, and it’s also something that fits my army’s fluff rather nicely. It’s also a rather nice throwback to my own Warhammer Fantasy times of yore. In fact, cousin Andy and me sometimes threw in duels between our generals when we felt like it, even when the rules did not yet officially allow it.

But if you want to have warlords and duels and all that, you really need a model who looks like it could pull its own weight, right? Wouldn’t want to get caught in a challenge with a model that looks unimpressive. Well, by lucky chance, I had built the right guy for the jobsome time ago and painted himt just in time for 6th edition…

First of all, let me say that the Chaos Lord in Terminator armour is easily one of my favourite plastic kits. It’s full of options, it delivers quite a bit of bang for the buck, and it’s easy enough to add some extra variety to the kit with the addition of stuff from your bitzbox. So I am not ashamed to say that I already built several of those Termie lords — all I can say in my defense is that it’s a lot of fun — much more fun than painting them, unfortunately!

That said, some time ago, I felt that I had to built a truly intimidating model for my World Eaters. So I cracked open a brand new Termie lord kit, gathered a couple of additional bits and got to work. I wanted the model to look like a truly accomplished warrior of the 12th Astartes legion. I also wanted to add a certain amount of dynamism to the model, making it look like it was in the midst of battle. And I wanted to add some decorative bits to show that this guy is not just some run of the mill Chaos Terminator. Here’s what I ended up with:

As you can see, most of the parts are from the Termie lord kit. I added a Bloodletter sword as his primary weapon and built his sword arm from a Terminator arm, a Chaos Knight forearm and the sword itself. I also gave him a power fist, just because it looked cool. I added a Chaos Marauder shield to his fist as some kind of combat shield. This type of shield is also a recurring visual motif in my army. Parts of a Marauder standard were used to build a crest for his head to represent a more individualised type of the classic Khornate “bunny ears”. I also used shoulderpads from the Chaos Knight kit to make his armour look like it was a special design.

His head is from the loyal Assault Terminators, although it definitely looks suitably angry for a World Eater. And of course I added some skulls to his amour and used them to emphasise a sense of movement. I also planned to base him using one of the very nice resin bases from the GW 40k basing kit.

I was really pleased with the conversion, since the model has a really dynamic pose and looks like it’s in the middle of a fight – or a duel, as it were.

I was a little afraid of actually painting this guy, to tell you the truth. I like this model a lot, so I was apprehensive of the possibility of screwing up the paintjob, so I put off having to paint him for quite a while. In the end, my curiosity got the better of me though, so one warm afternoon, I got to work. And fortunately, my trusted colour recipe didn’t let me down. Neither did my – sometimes a little spotty – talent for painting. What a relief!

Here’s the completed model:

However, the base did pose a bit of a problem: The resin bases, although very nice, are slightly larger than the standard Termie base for some reason. This left me with three options: Use the resin base on top of a Termie base and have it look goofy. Use it without the Termie base and have it look unfinished. Or build my own base.

So instead I looked at the elements that I really liked (the banner pole from a Space Marine officer, trampled underfoot) and tried to recreate a similar base with cork and stuff from my bitzbox. I also added a really cool resin skull (once again courtesy of Biohazard). Here’s two detail shots of the base:

It may not be as great as the resin base, but I think it’s a fairly close approximation. And it actually has the right size. I’d really like to know which rocket scientist decided to make the resin bases just slightly too big… Or am I missing something important here?

Anyway, I am mighty pleased with how this model turned out! I think he looks really intimidating, like he would be a beast to face in battle. Just right for an officer of Khorne’s Eternal Hunt.

All that’s left is to come up with some background, so that Huntmaster Isgarad may take his rightful place amongst Lorimar’s Chosen. I’ll keep you updated. Until then, let’s have a little scale shot with a normal World Eater. The Huntmaster is quite a big guy:

Alright, then, let the dueling season begin. I, for one, am ready

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks, guys!

@ A Kvlt Ghost: My main ingredient is some thin cork (in fact, cork wallpaper) that I use to emulate the look of rock, burst asphalt etc. I usually add some small bits of slate from the 40k basing set (although some cork chaff that is usually available in hobby stores very cheaply works like a charm as well). Then everything is painted in Adeptus Battlegrey (or any orther dark grey), washed with Agrax Earthshade and (!) Nuln Oil. Then I drybrush the edges with Skull White. It doesn't take long, looks rather convincing and makes a great contrast against the World Eaters' red armour

To be honest though, I like that half-nekkid warrior you put him next to out of the entire army! He looks pretty sweet, and I think that's what I see when I think about the age of the techno barbarians before the Emprah brought it all together.

But overall, a really, really great army you've got here!

That Huntsman is a fantastic model, yet again. The thing I really love about your stuff (apart from how well done it all is of course) is how 'simple' your conversions appear to be. I obviously mean that in a good way, you take bits from various box sets and make models look so much better, I can't remember seeing many kit bashes as good as yours. But unlike some conversions you see, that use a vast array of bits, skilled green stuff work, plasticard and the like. Unfortunately I haven't go the money to go buying Chaos stuff before the new codex comes out, but i'm preying Khorne is well represented, so I can finally start building up a dedicated Khorne part to my Chaos army, probably starting with some Brazen knights, but pretty much everything in this thread is inspiring work.

Thanks for the kind words, rodgers37!

I know what you mean: With the huge amount of plastic kits available, kitbashing has basically become an art form of its own, right? In any case, it's very handy for someone like me with very limited GS-skills. I've also yet to try my hand at the whole plasticard thing, so until then kitbashing's the way for me

Alright, here's the promised mini tutorial on my Traitor Guard. Let me preface this by saying that this is not about producing award winning stuff, but about getting a couple of models done reasonably well in a reasonable amount of time. Towards that end, we'll basically be doing three major steps: basecoats, washes and accents. I'm not going to stop you from throwing in several steps of layering and detailing somewhere along the way, but don't expect that kind of stuff from this tutorial. This is the quick and easy recipe

Oh, and it's also virtually identical to my Traitor Ogryn recipe, so you're basically getting two tutorials for the price of one

Everybody ready? Alright, here goes:

We'll be dealing with three traitor soldiers here. Three is about the maximum I can realistically paint at the same time without going crazy: I have a pretty short attention span while painting, so something new has to happen every once in a while in order to keep me interested. Also note that, if you're following this recipe, the models will look quite horrible for a pretty long time. Don't get nervous, have a little faith. Keep calm and carry on

First all the models are spraypainted with GW Chaos Black undercoat. Then I lay down the base colours. You know how to do that, so I probably won't have to hold your hand. Here's what my models looked like after this step:

In this particular case, the colours I used were GW Dheneb Stone for skin and bone, GW Adeptus Battlegrey for the fatigues and bases, GW Scorched Brown for leather, wood and the beards, Vallejo Tinny Tin for the brass trim, GW Boltgun Metal for the blades and metal parts and GW Mechrite Red for the odd armour plate.

I usually start with the innermost part of the model, which is usually the skin. Then I do the fatigues and base, then the leather and wood, then the metal parts. This means that, painting the skin, I can be as messy as I want. I can clean up the mistakes during the next steps. When all the base colours are there, take a moment to tidy up the mistakes in all the different areas. Always finish one colour on all models before ging on to the next one. That'll save time and sanity, although it'll get rather boring over time (that's why we only tackled three models, see ).

At the end of this step, the models will look rather flat and uninteresting. Don't lose hope, here's when the magic happens!

Bring out the washes: In my case, I use GW Ogryn Flesh, GW Devlan Mud and/or Agrax Earthshade and GW Badab Black and/or Nuln Oil.

1.) Use GW Ogryn Flesh to wash the model's skin. We want a slight, rosy tinge to the skin without it actually looking healthy. Meanwhile, be sure to get some of the stuff into the recesses to take care of shading and add some depth to the model. Using your paintbrush, you can actually control rather nicely where the shadows will begin to form. It might take multiple passes. Better safe than sorry ;-)
Here's a detail of the squad leader's face:

You can see how the wash has created a relatively realistic shading of his skin.

Repeat this for all the models. Then you can either wait for everything to dry, or you can move right along to the next step:

2.) Wash the bases and fatigues with Devlan Mud/Agrax Earthshade. You should be able to do this, since there's little enough contact between the areas of skin and the actual fatigues. You want some nice, deep shadows in the recesses, so don't be stingy with the stuff.

3.) After all of this is well dry, wash the base, fatigues and metal parts with Badab Black/Nuln Oil. Yes, you read that right: The fatigues and bases get the double treatment. Again, don't drown your models, but use a fair amount of wash.

When that has dried as well, use Devlan Mud/Agrax Earthshade on the bronze, red and brown parts. Oh, and don't forget the bone!

Here's what the models will look like after washing:

Better already, huh? As Steve Buddle once explained in a WD article, this can really be a magical moment: Walking away from a model that looks unimpressive and returning to see it transformed by the washes.

Anyway, here's where the fun begins: Now we're going to do the accents and details. You can really knock yourself out here, although I can be helpful to know when to stop Here's what I did:

- I layered GW Red Gore onto the red parts.
- I brushed GW Dwarf Bronze on the edges of the brass trim
- I brushed GW Graveyard Earth on the leather and wood
- I used GW Vermin Brown for the beards
- I brushed GW Skull White on the edges of the bases, giving them a nice rubble look.
- I also brushed Skull White on the raised part of the fatigues to add to the sense of depth and make them look more dusty and threadbare. This is a matter of personal preference though, so you may want to leave this out.

All of this was rather quick. I took a little more time for the following steps:

- Use GW Dheneb Stone on the raised parts of the faces (i.e. nose, cheekbones, brow, lips)
- Use GW Mithril Silver to do ageing effects and weathering on the metal (by edge highlighting or just stippling it on haphazardly with a dry brush). Also use Mithril Silver to carefully drybrush the weapons, blades etc.
- Use GW Bleached Bone to accentuate the skulls and bones.

You can actually keep working on the details for as long as you like. After completing the above steps, here's what I ended up with:

Certainly no award winning material, but they'll look well enough on the table Here's a couple of additional detail shots:

And we're done.

When painting Chaos Ogryns, I would take some extra time to add some bruises and shadows to their skin, using a mix of GW Baal Red and GW Leviathan Purple. I would also brush GW Graveyard Earth onto their trousers to show where dirt and grime have accumulated. And I would add some extra rust and patina to the metal parts, using thinned down Vermin Brown for the former and a thinned down Mix of Vallejo Halcon Turquoise and Skull White for the latter. Here's an example:

Due to his size, this guy allows for a little more detail than the regular traitors. He still matches the overall colour scheme, though.

And with that, the tutorial is concluded. I hope this can be of some help to you. Any questions or remarks? Just let me know

Great job KrautScientist spot on and very clear the mane thing I wanted to know was the skin tone, it really is quite a simple formula to follow but really effective

Thanks so much for doing this, great job and really appreciate it and look forward to more of your cool stuff

Thanks, guys! My first tutorial ever, I'm feeling quite emotional

I'd like to show you some more traitors today, the ringleaders of my small force of malcontents, so to speak. The old LNTD list allows you to field up to three Chaos Space Marine champions as a part of your traitor force. They are supposed to represent Chaos Space Marines that left their legions behind (or fallen loyal Space Marines for that matter), trying to build up their own forces. But when I started converting my traitors, I felt that I would prefer my Chaos champions to look more like they had once belonged to the same Imperial regiment as the rest of the force. Another advantage to this strategy would be that the models would be equally usable in different army lists (Chaos Champions in LNTD, officers in IG and Vraksian Renegade Militia). And I also figured that it might be a cool idea to build some champions that could be perceived to be aligned with a special Chaos God. In an overall undivided force, these would be leading squads pledged to a single god in battle. The overall theme of a rogue regiment of the Imperial Guard would remain intact, however. So with that in mind, I started converting my “ringleaders”. Here’s what I did.

The first model simply sprang from the desire to convert the WFB plastic Nurgle Lord – it’s just such a cool model that I simply couldn’t resist. Cameron’s fantastic Renegade Sergeant was also a tremendous inspiration! Even though I stayed closer to the original model in my conversion, it really didn’t take a lot to “40k-ify” the model. This is a WIP shot:

Basically all I did was to change his weapons and add a couple of bits and bobs: Instead of a two-handed axe, I used a Bolt Pistol (from the Khorne Berzerkers) and a vicious looking weapon from the WFB Chaos Knights. I had to add a bit of greenstuff to the wound where the axe handle normally rests across his belly, but apart from that, it was a fairly easy kitbash. I also added a slightly converted CSM backpack, some cabling and an electrical coil to make him look less medieval.

When painting him up, I eschewed the standard Nurgle scheme of greens and browns in favour of using my “regular” traitor colour scheme, because I wanted to tie him in with the rest of the force. I then went back and added all kinds of rust and weathering effects to represent the rot and corruption that is so typical of servants of Nurgle. Here’s the finished model:

Not only is the plastic Nurgle Lord a fantastic model, it’s also a huge amount of fun to make the paintjob go as disgusting as possible! I added some nasty yellow pustules and used gloss varnish to make his open wounds and sores look all the more horrible. But while the model clearly reads as a champion of Nurgle, he still shares the same colours as my other traitors.

As for a suitable retinue, I am thinking about a “Chem-Squad” of some sort, a unit of trenchers with gas masks, sporting a look between medieval and World War I. I am still looking for the perfect recipe, although the models will probably be based on Bretonnian Men-at-arms, taking inspiration from Dave Taylor’s fantastic “Genswick Rifles” . All in due time…

For the time being, I contented myself with building a second officer for my Traitor Guard. Here he is:

As look at the severed heads might tell you, this guy is pledged to Khorne. I didn’t want him to look too similar to a World Eater though, so I went for something a bit more subdued.

The basic model consists of the torso of the new WFB plastic chaos wizard combined with the legs from an old plastic Goliath ganger from Necromunda. I added a bare arm from the Gor kit and a chainsword arm from the normal Chaos Space Marines. The scarred head came from the Cadian command squad and was a perfect fit.

Once again, the paintjob uses the same colours as the rest of the traitors. I must say it was quite a nice change to be painting a follower of Khorne with very little red.
This guy could eventually end up leading a squad of beastmen or something of the like. But he also makes a rather nice “normal” traitor officer.

That leaves only Tzeentch and Slaanesh, although I already have a couple of ideas…

In the meantime, let’s take a look at the bigger picture: All in all, I am rather pleased with the development of my small Traitor Guard force! As of this post, here’s where the army’s at:

The command squad and one squad of traitors are complete. The Ogryns are playable (althoug I’ll add at least one more model to the squad). I also have a number of additional champions. Another squad of traitors as well as a mysterious transport vehicle have been built but have yet to be painted. Like I said, a squad of creepy, faceless WWI-esque trenchers would be nice, and maybe there’ll be a squad of beastmen or a full blown Leman Russ at some point? Or a couple of heavy weapons teams? Or cavalry? Whatever’s fun to build and paint, I guess! With the rules for allies, I can actually use these guys even without having a fully rounded out force. I also really don’t give a hoot about their power on the table. For me, it’s usually enough that they look the part.

Let me know what you think! As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

And then there's the fact that some of the conversions I am most proud of are in fact from my World Eaters army.

Alright everyone, update time

My recently discovered love for converting and painting Traitor Ogryns would not let me rest until the fourth member of the squad was completed, so this post will be about him.

After the last Ogryn (you know, the one with the tongue…) had been such a joy to build, I found myseld really psyched for the next model. Unfortunately, it was a bit harder to come up with yet another Ogryn without the whole thing ending up boring. The reason for this was that there is unfortunately very little diversity in the plastic Ogres: While there are lots and lots of cool bits, the kit just offers two bodies, and the positioning of the arms is very restricted.

So it took me a while to build the last squad member, but in the end I prevailed. Here’s what I came up with:

Once again, the head was quite difficult to get right: I used a helmeted Ogryn head and added some augmetic goggles. But that alone made the Ogryn look like some really flustered fat guy with glasses, so I added an Ork armour plate to give him a closed helmet once again.

I tried to combine various visual elements from the other squad members without duplicating them outright. So the Ogryn got the helmet and goggles and some armoured arms from the Ironguts kit while also sporting the armour plates and a strange tank grafted to his back. He ended up looking like a “missing” link between the first two models I built which is just what I had intended.

I really wanted to use the huge club from the Ironguts kit, since it looks like a truly improvised weapon. It took some time to get the pose right, but in the end, everything worked out rather nicely. I also added some bags to the model’s waist to make the area look less plain.

By this time, the recipe for the paintjob had been well established, so all I had to do was to follow it. This also allowed me to finish this guy in a little over two hours which is quite a feat for me. Here he is:

The Ogryn’a giant club was painted as if it was made from stone studded with rusty metal. I wanted to give it a really used look, which I think worked pretty well.

Looking back on it now, the gut plate looks a little too busy. Mabe I should have gone with something simpler there. I also managed to overlook a very noticeable moldline along the right hand.

Apart from that, though, I quite like the result. And the best thing is that I now have a fourth member for my merry barbershop quartet. Take a look:

These guys really look like they mean business, right?

I will probably add yet another Ogryn to bring the number of models in the squad up to five, but that will have to wait for a bit. Although I am already finding myself thinking of the next conversion in line…

Until then, as always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Ah, you're reading me like an open book, mate

Seriously though, I only have one more Ogryn body left, so there's a natural limit to how many I can build. And I don't see myself getting another kit. They were great fun to build and all, but if I were to build another squad of hulking mutants, I'd probably go for a different kit just to have some variety. Minotaurs would be nice. Or Vargheists...

Oh, awesome, NOW you're giving me ideas... I hope you're proud of yourself!

Natural limit is good, unless I'm around, I don't care about that sort of stuff!
In all seriousness on my end, that would be an expensive way, last I checked 6 ogres cost less than 6 Crypt Gouls or Minitours
Of course, they also are a bit static, compared to the gouls that is.

And, yes, I am proud, ideas make the world spin round (well, not literally, but you know what I mean? )

(I'm sleepy so if this makes no sense, that's why)

Still, I've wanted to try my hands at those Vargheists for quite some time now. Hmmm...

Anyway, none of this will happen before the new Chaos Codex hits anyway. Until then, I have at least one more Ogryn before me.

Thanks, bigfish!

Today's update is connected to my World Eaters in a rather roundabout way: I recently participated in the Tenth ToS Painting/Modelling contest over at Throne of Skulls . The subject of the contest was to build and paint a loyal Marine that had fallen under the corrupting influence of Khorne. Here's what I whipped up:

This guy made the mistake of wrestling a daemon sword from his opponent during combat. That was a bad idea

The piece was inspired by an old piece of fluff from the 3.5 Chaos Codex:

“Willingly you picked me up. Your first mistake. Willingly you drew me. Your second mistake. I do not allow my servants to make three mistakes, foolish mortal…”

I also won the competition too! Yay! Granted, there was only one other entry, but it was awesome.

Anyway, for more pictures and the full story, head over to my blog , in case you're interested. Apart from that, let me say that there's quite a bit of World Eaters related content on the way...

As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks a lot, MrMerlin! I'm glad somebody noticed the update

This model taught me that I really hate painting loyal Marines: All that edge highlighting necessary to make their plain armour more interesting drives me up the wall. That said, I quite like the new SW plastics and could see myself converting a squad of Dark Wolves -- one day in the far future, that is That said, I like sprinkling the odd SW bit into my World Eaters, seeing as they really fit the hunting theme I've got going on.

Oh, and while we are speaking of Khorne's Eternal Hunt, let me present you with a new update:

I promised some time ago that I would start showcasing my whole army soon, so here's the beginning of that. I originally had this planned as a huge chaos extravaganza in celebration of the new Chaos Codex’s imminent release. But then, GW decided to pull a rather big switcheroo and push back the new Chaos Space Marines in favour of a Daemon release. But with the first teaser pictures of the fantastic starter box models out today, and with the new book once again just around the corner. let's have a little "Roll Call for Chaos", shall we?

As you all know, I got back into the hobby in late 2010 and started work on the current version of my World Eaters at the beginning of 2011. I did however “salvage” some older models from my collection, if only for the reason that, being a rather slow painter, I needed them to swell the 4th assault company’s ranks. So the next few updates will deal with some of the old and some of the new. In all fairness, you will already have seen some of the models posted on this plog. However, the new photos are probably of a better quality, at least.

So for starters, let us take a look at the Skull Champions for my Berzerkers and the icons of glory their squads are carrying into battle.

The first two models I would like to show you are true classics: I bought these when I first started working on a small World Eaters force some time during the late 90s. This was soon after the plastic Khorne Berzerker kit had been released, and I tried to get hold of some of the older metal models to serve as champions. So I got these guys:

Two of the classic metal World Eaters champions released during the mid-90s. They are wielding standard chain weapons (though their size make them look like they could be chainaxe or chainsword of Khorne, respectively). I still like the sculpts a lot, even they tend to look a little two-dimensional when seen from the side.
I also painted these over a decade ago, so they look quite a bit rougher than my newer models if you take a closer look.

Anyway, they served as champions until I took my hobby hiatus during most of the 2000s. Then, when I got back to working on a World Eaters army, I realised the usefulness of Skull Champions wielding power fists, so I set out to build some new models:

Skull Champion Memnar here was built with parts from the regular Berzerker kit and some CSM bits. I added a torso with a chain tabard from the chaos vehicle sprue and a trophy pole, however, to make him easily identifiable as a squad leader. His helmet was spliced together from that of a WFB Chaos Warrior and the regular Khornate “bunny ears”.

Skull Champion Bruul follows the same basic recipe, although I went for a bare head from the Chaos Terminator Lord kit this time. His power fist was converted from that of a loyal Terminator, and I added a spike and a Chaos Marauder Buckler on the back in order to make it look a little more interesting:

These guys look a little more modern, and they added some much needed oomph to my Berzerkers unit during 5th edition. They were kind of useful to have in combat with vehicles and monstrous creatures. However, maybe I’ll have to build yet another set of models once the new rules are out. Let’s wait and see…

Then there’s the icons. I am a great fan of having icon bearers in my army, even in those cases where they are not actually necessary in a squad. I just think it adds some nice character to the army, and I also try to never repeat an icon design across the entire army.

So it was clear that my Berzerkers would also get some icon bearers, even though their perks are “built-in” and don’t require a special model. First up is another vintage metal World Eater from the mid-90s. I especially like this model (even though he’s even more two-dimensional than his buddies above). Even though I’ve owned this model for almost twenty years, I only painted him last year, so he holds up rather well in comparison with my newer models.

The Khorne Berzerkers were actually the only unit type to get a dedicated standard bearer back then. All the other standards used the same metal Chaos Space Marine, with just the actual icon on top of the pole god-specific and exchangeable. The Khorne icon also manages to look rather threatening, like it could actually be used as a weapon.

It’s also interesting to note how those three old metal Khorne Berzerkers share between them pretty much all of the visual elements that make up the late 90s Khorne Berzerker plastic kit — take a closer look, and you’ll recognise most of the details!

So it was clear that I had to built another icon bearer for my second squad of berzerkers. This time, I went for a mix of the old and the new:

The model was built by mixing berzerker parts with the dedicated Khorne bits from the regular Chaos Space Marines. The banner pole comes from some OOP WFB plastic Warriors of Chaos, and the icon itself is a true classic from the old metal Bloodletters of Khorne. I like how my two icon bearers are clearly distinguishable while sharing a similar overall look.

And finally, yet another classic:

Even though I am not a great fan of actually using Kharn in game (I prefer my own characters, even if they are just using standard rules), I really love the model, even after all these years. My Kharn was painted almost 15 years ago, so he looks pretty rough in places, which puts me in a bit of a fix: I’d like to paint him again, but I won’t strip the paint from this particular model for nostalgia reasons (I can still remember the night when, coming home semi-drunk from a party, I struggled to get this guy’s backpack painted). On the other hand, I definitely won’t pay silly money for a new Finecast Kharn just for the privilege of painting him again. Maybe there’ll be a new version released soon?

The only touchup I did was to go back and add a little lighting effect to his Plasma pistol. It’s a little thing, but it definitely adds some pop to the model:

And that concludes our little tour of my World Eaters’ middle management. Although I have one or two more Skull Champions, they haven’t been painted yet. My next update will deal with the squads commanded by these guys.

Until then, as always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Whoa there, guys! Don't tempt me

Honestly though: A whole army of corrupted wolves definitely won't be in the cards for quite a long time: I've got my hands full with my World Eaters, Traitor Guard, Custodes and my different INQ28 activities.

But like I said, I would like to do some "Dark Wolves" some day, but they would probably be painted in the colours of "Scyrar's Dark Wolves" from the codex.

What I can promise you is that some SW parts will keep appearing throughout my World Eaters: Their barbaric nature makes a rather nice fit with the "hunting party" fluff of Khorne's Eternal Hunt. In fact, I have a (yet unpainted) berzerker squad that relies rather heavily on SW parts for some extra oomph. I especially like some of the heads: They look sooo angry

I use SW heads all the time just for that reason! My Vostroyan army is full of them. They need a little cleaning up sometimes because, let's be honest, the hairstyles don't really fit any other army (and some of them don't even fit SWs ), but the facial expressions are fantastic!

Cheers, Rawson! Completely with you there

Last time, I showed you my skull champions. Now let’s take a look at their subordinates.

As of now, there are two painted squads of Khorne Berzerkers in my army. For some, two troop choices may look a little thin, but Berzerkers tend to be a bit of a one trick pony, so I usually prefer diversifying a bit instead of sinking huge amounts of points into more Berzerker units. After all, holding objectives doesn’t sit well with a World Eater in the first place, so I usually tend to go for total annihilation of my opponent. Sometimes, it even works out

Quite a few of these Berzerkers were painted in the 90s, so they don’t hold up too well compared to my newer models. Fortunately, the pictures are rather advantageous, so the models don’t clash too much.

Here’s my first squad of Berzerkers, Hunting Pack Bruul:

About two thirds of this squad were actually painted fairly recently, so it looks alright. You can see skull champion Bruul and the icon bearer among the guys there.

And my second Berzerker squad: Hunting Pack Memnar:

Most of these are old models, and the paintjobs on some of them really show their age. Looking at the bareheaded legionnaire in the middle ground, you can see that my recipe for skin has changed quite a bit, and some of the other guys look really rough. One day, when I have lots of time, I may repaint them, but it actually seems far more probable that I’ll just “phase them out”, replacing them with newer models over time. Again, you can see the Skull Champion and icon bearer from the last post.

So last but not least, I’ll also include my squad of Possessed into this post. I built them from a mix of Berzerker and CSM parts and used Ork arms and old chaos mutations to show their possessions. Compared to the newer plastic kit, those look very restrained, though, so they end up being used as regular Berzerkers as often as not.

Anyway, meet Huntmaster Kharduun the Hunter and the Lost Brethren:

All of these last models were painted last year, so they are the most “modern” Berzerker unit in my army at this point. I am still rather pleased with some of the conversions, I especially like the guy on the right. Fun fact: Huntmaster Kharduun was the first World Eater I built in late 2010, after my hobby hiatus.

Something I will have to do for all of these models is to go back and touch up their bases. Most of them were originally based in the classic “early 90s’ GW” style (painted Goblin Green and flocked with cheap modelling grass), so I at least changed that. However, I hadn’t settled on a recipe for my basing then, so I’ll just have to take these guys and work on their bases — probably in one or two longer sittings.

My Berzerker squads are usually accompanied into battle by dedicated transports. I already converted the Rhinos in question, but have yet to paint one — to tell you the truth, I am rather nervous at the prospect, since vehicles are definitely not my strong suit…

Anyway, so much for the basic, footslogging troops. Next up: some heavy hitters.

Until then, as always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Cheers, mate!

You'd probably be pretty disappointed by the Rhinos: They are fairly straight builds. I only added some Spiky Bitz here and there and a stylised World Eaters legion badge crudely cut from plasticard And like I said, they haven't been painted yet. However, I've lately begun experimenting with another tank, and the prospect of having to paint a vehicle is no longer that frigthening to me, so I may actually tackle them pretty soon. We'll see...

Right, with the grunts out of the way, let’s take a look at the big bruisers:

And who would be first but the officers of the 4th assault company. Ladies and Gentlemen, give it up for Huntmasters Bardolf, Isgarad and Charun:

You already know these guys of couse, although I rather like the “family portrait” above: They look like they’re ready for a spot of skulltaking, am I right?

Charun and Isgarad were built to wield Daemon weapons, although I am not entirely sold on the new rules (AP3), so I may just use what works. Charun ends up using twin Lightning claws most of the time. I am lucky to be playing with a rather laidback group when it comes to WYSIWYG.

Speaking of dear old friends, these two gentlemen should seem familiar as well:

Khoron the Undying and Marax the Fallen, my Chaos Dreadnoughts. I won’t put you through having to look at all the different Dreadnought weapons again, though — all the more so since it remains to be seen whether any of these options will remain legal in the new book: Will there still be a regular Dread, or will all Chaos Dreads be counted as “Hellbrutes”? And while we are on that subject, let me just say that the Hellbrute from the starter box will definitely join those two sooner rather than later: Let’s just hope that Marax and Khoron will hold up when compared to that awesome new model…

Then there’s the lone Brazen Knight, hopefully soon to be joined by his squadmates (and a set of official rules):

Like I previously said, the other models are built and ready for painting. And even if the new book doesn’t offer any rules for Brazen Knights, I’ll maybe just use them as (allied) Bloodcrushers.

And finally, maybe the heaviest hitter of them all (provided it actually manages to hit anything, that is):

My defiler, the Daemon Engine “Unending Bloodlust”. Some of the more recent rumours maintain that daemon engines will truly return to form in the new codex, and this guy will be right there when it happens…

Anyway, while you should already know most of these models, some definitely profit from the better photography this time around ;-)

Alright, next stop: a couple of group shots.

Until then, as always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!

Thanks a lot, guys!

@ Rawson: I hate to disappoint you, but the Brazen Knight's pose isn't really that unique: I lifted it wholesale from one of Sprugly's models over at Warseer, so I really can't take credit for it. The paintjob's all mine, though

@ Miss Dee: Hmm, daemons aren't a priority at the moment, since Traitor Guard allies are currently more fun to build/convert. That said, I would like to have a small detachment of daemonic allies, if only for added flexibility. However, I am probably going to try something different with them: Instead of regular Bloodletters, I will probably use packs of chaos hounds, and a particularly huge beast could be used as a DP/greater daemon. That would fit the army's fluff as a hunting party much better, in my opinion. I could also use the Brazen Knights as daemons, if there are no rules for them in the new codex.

Have you considered seeing if anyone has a Kharn to trade on the dakka swap shop?
Might be better than spending silly money on fine cast.

Oh and your models rock!!!! Cant wait to see more.

Maybe I'll just wait until the new codex hits: There's bound to be a new Kharn model anyway, right?

I'll keep my fingers crossed

Anyway, todays's the day: I promised you pictures of the whole army, and here they are

Before I show you the whole hog, though, I almost forgot my Harriers (Raptors). There’s a completed five man squad at the moment, as you already know:

And then there’s these guys that I didn’t manage to squeeze in anywhere else:

You should recognise the models in the middle and on the right: On the right is an old, mid-90s plastic Berzerker, kindly sponsored by my fellow World Eater Biohazard. In the middle you can see a gladiatorial World Eater that I converted and painted some time ago.

The guy on the left is a test model for my chosen, the “Sons of Cron”. I converted the squad some time ago, but have yet to paint it. Until it’s finished, the model can serve as a “regular” Skull Champion with a power fist.

Okay, everyone, without further ado, here’s a couple of pictures of all my painted World Eaters together. Enjoy!

I really get a certain sense of achievement from seeing all those guys collected like that. All those models add up to about 2100 points fully kitted out. But then, that’s a bit of a naïve fallacy of course, since I couldn’t really use them like that (too many HQ selections for one, a recurring problem of mine). But all things considered, I suppose these guys would make up a legal army of about 1,500 points.

The really bad news is that there’s at least an equal amount of stuff that I haven’t yet managed to paint, so it seems that I have my work cut out for me:

All those unpainted models form a “Parade of shame” that I’ll show you another time. Until then, there’s more painted stuff to look at, though: In my next update, I'll show you my custom objective markers in more detail.

Until then, let me know what you think!

too many HQ's are a problem of mine as well. i've got three sorcerors, six standerd chaos lords, a terminator lord and a raptor lord. one or two of my lords haved deamon weapons, one sorceror has a familiar, and all the marks on top, which all all adds up to a load of points on lords alone.

your army looks intimidating i must say!!

Thanks, Chaos Emperor!

While too many HQ models may indeed be a problem from a gaming perspective, I usually relish building new models: With Chaos Space Marines, it's really all about the character for me: Those are milennia-old warriors, so there's too much narrative potential there to just represent them by cookie-cutter models My different Chaos Lords also help me to explore different angles and archetypes from my army's fluff, so I guess it's quite alright after all

Well, who am I to keep you waiting? Here we go:

I am a great fan of building my own objective markers. It’s easy, fun and adds a nice touch of individuality to your army. I’d go as far as saying that every self-respecting hobbyist should have a set of objective markers that matches their army, but that’s just me.

Anyway, having said that, it should be no surprise that I set out building some markers for my World Eaters as well. Here they are:

This first one is obviously a pretty straight example: It’s an axe resting atop a pile of skulls. The resin skulls are from the GW 40k basing set while the axe came from the WFB Marauder horsemen. Simple, but rather effective.

The second one is a banner of chaos rammed into the cracked earth. Again, I used bits from the different WFB Marauder kits. It’s also a nice bit of synergy that both these markers can be used for my World Eaters and Traitor Guard alike.

Then there’s this guy:

A World Eater towering above a defeated loyal Marine, ready to pull the trigger on him. I like this objective marker for the simple reason that it was almost completely build from scrap parts that I wouldn’t have been able to use otherwise (the Marine’s twisted and broken legs were actually the result of an attempt at repositioning gone wrong, for example).

I quite like the World Eater’s show of contempt, pinning his foe to the ground with an armoured boot…

And here’s all three objectives together:

I appreciate how there’s a certain sense of escalation ;-)

I also built some more fallen foes. Everything started with this guy:

As you can see, it’s a fallen Eldar guardian, bagged like an animal by the proud warriors of Khorne’s Eternal Hunt.

I built this after winning a campaign game against one of cousin Andy’s buddies and his Eldar army. I tried to emulate his paint scheme, although my version is quite a bit more rough and dirty. I plan to build an objective for every army I defeat during the campaign — not only is this a very nice way of “honouring” your foes, it also allows you to add some narrative elements to your force.

I believe I already posted this guy some time ago:

I built this fallen Marine to complement one of my Dreadnoughts (both of them together form some kind of “instant mini-Diorama” which you can see further up in this thread or here ). Again, the model was built completely from leftover parts.

And finally, I did a couple of minefield markers for use in our campaign (the 5th edition rulebook has some rules for minefields which we have been using up to now):

I had to use WFB bases for these because I had run out of round bases at that time. I bet you haven’t heard that one before ;-)

I used cork, leftover sprue and a couple of bits to build the markers. The mines themselves are parts of the magna grapple from the Furioso kit, and the warning shields wrre originally shields from the WFB snap fit Skeleton warriors.

While we only get to use these every once in a blue moon, it’s still nice to have something more exciting than some dice on hand in order to represent mines. Cousin Andy even did some corresponding markers for his Dark Eldar army.

Like I said, building objective markers is a fun way to add some extra shine to your army. And it’s usually easy and inexpensive too! You should definitely give it a try, if you haven’t already. Whether you want to poke fun at an opponent’s former mishaps, inject some humour into your army or just have the desire to be fighting over something more interesting than a six-sided die, individual objectives are the way to go!

And with that, you’ve seen everything there is to see about my World Eaters — everything that’s painted, that is. I hope that it’s been a fun ride! If you have any questions, criticism or words of encouragement, let me know!
As always, thanks for looking and stay tuned for more!
