As some of you may know I'm the owner of The WAAAGH Studios a commission painting service based in the UK.
This thread will be used to showcase commission projects that I've completed and I would be very grateful for any feedback you would be willing to give. If you're interested in following my work make sure to subscribe to this thread and give the studio Facebook page a "like": http://www.facebook.com/TheWAAAGHStudios
As for some pictures, here's a few of the latest project I've completed, a 5 man Grey Knight Purifiers unit with 2 x Halberds, 2 x Psycannons and a Knight of the Flame with Daemon Hammer:

Well done, man.

Great work. Very clean and detailed. What color blue did you use on the white helmets?
31625
Post by: AlexHeap
Thanks guys.
@Thortek: Don't let that put you off, I've had clients from all over the world and always keep postage costs as low as possible. The DA's for instance were posted to China.
@lav25gunner: The blue on the helmets is nice and simple it's just a watered down wash of asurmen blue into the recesses.

Barksdale wrote:Very well done. I don't really like the purple on the tabard but its just minor.
Thanks for the feedback. Is their any particular reason why you don't like it? Is it the way I've painted it? or the colour contrast with the rest of the model?
33123
Post by: Munga
I think it looks great but could have been a slightly brighter purple for the base and a brighter highling on the edges of it as well. It's a bit dark. And that's being super picky because I am SO jealous of this Out of curiousity, how much time do you sink into a HQ like this? The cape is wonderful. I wish they made a wash that made anything shiny, as that cape would look godly if it was a bit hyalopterous in effect.
24703
Post by: Norn King
Bear in mind that your painting skills are faaaaaarrrrr better then mine but IMO the purple on the Tabard looks a bit flat. Everything else is amazing.
33123
Post by: Munga
So it's unanimous, we're all jealous as hell but the loin cloth is a bit too flat. I am so totally going to rip off your scheme for the cloak, though. Here's hoping I can do 75% as good as you in probably 300% the amount of time
31625
Post by: AlexHeap
Looking at it now I think I agree with you so thanks guys that's exactly the sort of feedback I'm looking for to help me improve
@Munga: It was spread out over a few days in between other things but I think I spent in total about 6 hours on the model. Good luck with your painting, though if you'd prefer you could always commission me to do it

Post by: Dysartes
Alex - how many copies of Imotekh were required to get a workable one?
Also, out of interest, have you done non-GW commissions at all?
31625
Post by: AlexHeap
I've done some Malifaux models before and I've just finished up some RPG characters but the vast majority of the work I get is GW based. I'd love to do some Infinity or Warmahordes as their are quite a few models form those ranges that I like the look of so if you know anyone who'd like some done send them my way As for Imotekh I'm not 100% sure but I think I only needed to have one replacement sent out before I got one that was reasonably miscast free.

Because if that is your speedpainting result, I'd like to request a tutorial for then.
31625
Post by: AlexHeap
@thesilverback: Thanks very much The Dark Angels certainly seem to be a crowd favorite.
@sluggaslugga: Cheers mate. They're just painted normally to match the colour scheme of the models the client had in his army already.

I absolutely love all these models. As a Dark Angels player, I have a weak spot for DA models and these are exceptional, however I feel that a good freehanded DA winged sword on every shoulder would just put them over the edge. Also, maybe a freehand decal on their chest piece? They are looking a little flat to me, but then again, I like to have lots of little touches on my models. Perhaps the client didn't want it, but it may be something to consider next time?

what are you using to finish your bases? I like the look of that texture you've got going there. much nicer than the sand I'm using now also, going back to the first few grey knights images you posted, were those shell casings on the bases something you added or did they come with the base?
cheers!

Post by: AlexHeap
@VardenV2: Thanks for the feedback. I'd love to add little details like that to all the models I do but as this is commission work I have to stick to exactly what the client wants.
@varl: It's nothing special, just sand taken from the beach 5 mins down the road. The shell casings are extras that I added myself from plastic rod.

the dark angels look awesome!! all your work on this thread looks nice and sharp, but the DA s really stood out to me as a favorite.
ive always been curious about people painting the figure and the gun seperately. why did you do this? i didnt read every word in the thread so forgive me if you explained this allready
31625
Post by: AlexHeap
Thanks guys
@neal1975: It tells you just under the Dark Angel pictures but the client is going to be adding the Bolters to the ones that don't have them when they get back to him. Though normally people paint the guns separately so it's easier to get your brush to the details on the chest.

Lovely work, I know where I need to come if I get a bit low on 'painting effort'
31625
Post by: AlexHeap
Thanks guys
@Norn King: What about the weathering don't you like? The client just wanted some paint chips to show they're not straight off the factory floor. Is that not what it comes across as?
53748
Post by: varl
I have to agree with Norn King here. the model seems too clean, so the paint chips blend into the color scheme instead of standing out like marks of wear-and-tear.
it's more of an issue for me on the legs in the first photo. the chips look like they're part of the normal leg detail (like rivets or something). maybe they just aren't showing up well in the photos?
11029
Post by: Ketara
The white helmet on the dreads strikes me as a litle too bright. The rest of the model is meant to be chipped and slightly battle worn, so the head just looks a spot too....well, clean I guess.

Thanks for the feedback guys I'll certainly take it on board with future projects. I've just got back from a Fantasy tournament where I managed to come home with the trophy for third place which I'm definitely happy with considering I only started really learning the game this month. Anyway, now that's done it's all back to business as usual and the next few projects that will be coming up are some Brettonian Grail Knights and a Deathwatch Strike force with sculpted shoulder pad icons. Those custom shoulder pads are incredible! I'm not a huge fan of that inquisitor's sword, though. I think I have a personal issue with the 'banded glare' style of blade painting, but I'm pretty sure that popular opinion supports them. The rest of the inquisitor is fantastic! These are some amazing figs. Black is such a hard color to paint, but you've done a great job of it!

I'm personally not keen on the goofy looking wrist mounted storm bolter on the Libarian, I would of used the Sanguinary Guard wrist mounted bolters. I do like the Dark Angels on the first post though, they are gorgeous.
31625
Post by: AlexHeap
@Arm.chair.general: Why do you think it looks goofy? It's just a grey knight storm bolter. An angelus bolter certainly would have fit there but the client wanted him to be armed with a storm bolter. If you like the Dark Angels make sure to check back in a few days. I've got a second set of them on the go at the moment. @LutherMax: Cheers mate Your BAs are looking rather nice aswell, especially for AOBR minis. @TheAngrySquig: No OSL on the Immortals I'm afraid. The bases are just painted up to match the vehicles from the Sautekh dynasty. Here's something I've completed recently, a Blood Angels Honour Guard:

Post by: AlexHeap
@spoon3r: I do some airbrush work but it's mostly to get the basecoats down nice and quickly. The vast majority of the work is done with my trusty Series 7 size 0,
@DijnsK: The Necron bases are from Base-x-of-war:

@Firepainter: The helmets are from Maxmini and the little wings are from the Ravenwing upgrade sprue. @Sharazad: That depends on the model and what exactly the client wants done. These Dark Angels for example were airbrushed the darkest cream colour and then the rest was painted normally. Speaking of which here are some more Veterans:

They are great models, and only one per army from 500 points to 5000 points. Just thinking he should stand taller and more dramatic then the rest.

The client just wanted their bases to match the rest of the models. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Love your work the paint job is lovely. But the model is absolutely awful IMO. Can't stand the fact that it is so wrong on many levels. If he lifts his arms his armour would crush his head and forget about walking .

@MadMuzza: Thanks very much. You can occasionally find them on ebay but they're very expensive. @Ciaphas: He's the Emperor he doesn't have to move he just stands there and kills everything with mind bullets Here's a squad of Kabalite Warriors that have just been completed:

Beautiful models, took my time going through the showcase so far, all I can say is brilliant painting and converting.
Regarding the BA models you have painted, like the stormraven above ^^, may i ask how you have painted the red, it looks so pure and full of life.
And also the Emperor model is insane, the only thing I was worried about was the claw he has, it looks rather chaosy. Should we suspect the Emperor is aligned with Chaos . But all in all it's a fantastic model, what parts were used to make him? Namely the armour?

Loving those Fire Warriors - never seen Vior'la in that colour scheme - just amazing!

It's the compliments and feedback you deserve
Well, that was kinda what I was fearing you would say. Y'see Qatar hasn't quite grasped what "post and mail" is, nor do they know how to handle stuff right at customs . Still, with that track record, I'd still be willing to give it a go (as long as I don't become the first (and last ) person that you have to contact saying "we don't believe your models made it safely").
Regardless, I am stuck between getting my IG footsloggers commissioned or not. I don't know if I can dig out enough money for fantastic work and tips . But we all love potential customers, don't we?
