*EDIT* - Going to keep this thread going post Salamanders as somewhere to post pics of other things I (very slowly) work on...
Thought I'd actually try a blog thread for my current army project - A 1500pt Salamanders army!
Aiming to make these some of the best models I've painted, so putting a little extra effort in. Going for Forge World Mark IV heads/torsos (the Red Scorpions conversion kit gives pretty good value) and Dark Arts lava bases.
The "fluff" for my army is a small but battle-hardened force accompanying Vulkan He'Stan in his search for chapter relics, I'm giving all the tac marines terminator honour shoulder pads to try and indicate some kind of veteran status, also to avoid too much shoulder pad freehand .
My first finished squad is a 5-man unit of scouts with Pig Iron heads (HATE the plastic scout heads, but the rest of the models are great):
On the painting table at the moment is an AOBR Dreadnought ( WIP), tarted up with some FW brass Salamanders symbols:
After that I have lined up my first 5 Tactical marines:
Then a Rhino:
Also worth showing a pic of is my Vulkan He'Stan model that I bought on eBay a couple of years ago - No idea who sculpted it, but I love it - I have now replaced the head with a FW Mark IV head to tie in with the rest of the force:
Hoping that FW bring out a CC variant of the Tartaros terminator armour, as they will tie in beautifully with the rest of my Mark IV marines...
Hope to have a further update soon, any comments gratefully received!

Very cool stuff - the Salamanders have a great fluff and your models are definitely doing it justice so far! Keep it up.
The pig iron heads are a really good fit for the scouts too (their heads work well for IG vets, but don't seem to work for Space Marines.

Very nice lava effects. Its also nice to see more helmet scout marines. They cant always go to battle without a helmet of sorts, especially in hazardous environments

Haven't really had any time for painting owing to parental responsibility and general sleepiness
I have, however, managed to assemble the next 5 marines, and the Land Raider with added bling from Chapterhouse and Forge World brass:

Well, the mini-Slinky is now 2 months old, things are settling down a bit and I've managed to get the brushes out
Dreadnought #2 is complete:
Next up, 5 more Tac marines to complete Tac squad #1 - Hopefully the next update will be a bit sooner this time

Forgot to mention, had a slight panic last week when my ancient pot of Citadel Hobgoblin Orange (bought in about 1990 ) finally proved unusable (turns out there was a tear in the lid so it had dried out enough to be beyond saving). This was one of the main colours I was using for the lava bases
Got a pot of "Fire Dragon Bright", which seems a close enough match. Phew.

really nice work, here. I love your take on vulcan (the pose on the GW model really irks me) and I envy your collection of FW and chapterhouse bits

I too am not a fan of the GW model, but love this one!

Nothing new to show, just complaining that Land Raiders are BIG - also, Snot green takes at least 2 coats to cover the base coat of Orkhide shade. Sigh.

Got a bit disheartened by how big the LR is and how slowly I was progressing, so I ground to a halt.
Hoping to re-motivate myself with a post on here...
Here's the WIP so far:
Next up is going to be a set of Terminators - I plan to use the FW Tartaros models:
And though I haven't bought them yet, I did get the weapons I wanted via bits sellers:
Now, I had an idea for these - I thought the shields would be a bit dull in green, but then I remembered the OLD Salamanders colour scheme:
So my plan is to use that yellow/black camo scheme on the shields - I think it might look pretty cool
32354
Post by: Yojiro
God damn that LR is going to look awesome!
17796
Post by: Slinky
Well, that particular self-motivation didn't work, but now 3 months down the line I have got stuck in again and the LR is progressing.
Hope to finish it soon, will then post pics
17796
Post by: Slinky
Finally finished all the green bits of the LR last night! That is a weight off my mind
Done about 50% of the "bling" too - I may actually finish this soon - amazing
26416
Post by: Young_Logan
Love the land raider and hestan If you can do the shields like that without them looking garish then i would do it, if not i wouldn't as it just wouldn't look right with the rest of your army. ALthough i don't doubt your painting skills, best of luck

17796
Post by: Slinky
Managed to get my brushes out for the 2nd night in a row, which is quite some achievement for me in the last 6 months. Now the "bling" is progressing well.
Young_Logan wrote:If you can do the shields like that without them looking garish then i would do it, if not i wouldn't as it just wouldn't look right with the rest of your army.
I plan to do one as a prototype and see how it looks. Aiming for a fairly orangey yellow, so hopefully won't be too bright...

I will order the Terminators from Forge World soon, but might paint some Sedition Wars minis while I wait...
17796
Post by: Slinky
Well, my Sedition Wars Kickstarter box arrived, and I have decided that I should paint all the contents of that.
Going for a pretty quick paint style, and so far I have already managed 12 of the Strain, which is world record pace for me
Just a v simple base coat and Devlan Miracle wash, I am pleased with the results.

I'm guessing your TFC was a metal one. I read stories of how infuriating is to assemble that model.
Lovely tech-marine, I really like that Obsidian-like blade. I'm hoping with so many months away you are ready and pumped for more Salamanders action!
17796
Post by: Slinky
Yes, metal. So many of the bits just plain didn't fit it was painful. I have it together, but it's not perfect...

I've always liked the salamanders chapter and flames , but the colors never looked just right. Your terminator however is perfect. The only thing I might do different if I could opt that would be a yellow helmet. The white just looks weird to me or one reason. It looks great, just doesn't fit my plans.

You're very welcome, and I certainly don't mean to detract from your Deadzone postings. I don't know anything about Deadzone beyond the fact that it's produced by Mantic. Although your postings just now did prompt me to look into some of their Terrain offerings.
But I'm super interested in your Salamanders army primarily for the usage of Mk4 armor. I've actually been planning and developing a Pre-Heresy army that ideally will use a lot of models in Mk4 suits so it's nice to see so many of them painted up, assembled, and in one place.

Thanks, guys! I really appreciate the comments
I have been on an extended break from painting, having lost my painting mojo again. I think I am coming to the end of it, though, and hope to get back behind a brush soon, probably to finish off my DZ rebs.
Maybe I need a lofty painting target like yours, AzazelX. At this point if I manage to paint 30 figures this year I think I will be doing well
115
Post by: Azazelx
Well, set it for something achievable - 50 figures? 100? and allow yourself any number of "cheats". Mine isn't 365 figures painted from scratch - it's "365 figures finished to my current standard". If I rebase and touch up a figure from years ago, it counts (I'm doing round bases). If I finish figures that have been half-painted or 90% painted since last year (or a decade ago) it counts. Scenery? Each individual piece counts.
Then if you fail to hit it by the end of the year, set yourself the "soft" target next year of beating the previous year's output, as well as another go at the original target.
I took a few figures to work this week - along with 3 paints and 2 brushes - just to do a little highlighting in a quiet corner during my lunch break. The plan being to keep me interested, since by Tuesday night I usually lose my painting mojo until the following Saturday. Sunday I'm firing on all cylinders, then Monday I'm back at work...

I have lined up my first ever game of Deadzone for Friday, so I thought I would get a bit more terrain built.
This is the first wargaming-related thing I have done for ages, so even though it's not much, I feel a glow of pride
17796
Post by: Slinky
Got a good session in with clippers and glue last night, and assembled some more DZ terrain:
I am going to include a few more "abstract" bits like the 2 walls connected together, as I think they will work well for DZ itself, whereas the more complete buildings will do double duty for 40k as well.
17796
Post by: Slinky
First game of DZ went well, though slowly as we had to look up every rule every time...
Here's an action shot of my survey drone keeping an eye on some scary Plague types.
In the end, I won by having 7 turns of "Survive" and capturing a couple of items.

I have finished another Mierce troll:
With my newly instituted rules, large models like this count as 2 figures painted, taking my 2015 total to: 9
Next up, I am going to be working on some of my Orks, lots of whom are started but need finishing off. These 5 are first:
115
Post by: Azazelx
Great work on those DeadZone models. They've come up quite nicely. I'm also liking the Mierce Troll - have you decided how you're planning to base them yet? I also like the old-school Orks as well - that's one of my own future projects. (One day!)

Thanks, Az!
Base-wise I am waiting for one of the pads from the "Basius 2" Kickstarter - It was a long time ago now, but I think I asked for the "forest" base, which has some leafy bits and some rocky bits. Hoping to perfect a way of using oven-baked sculpting clay with that, rather than mixing up that much GS!

That takes me to 14 finished models this year Automatically Appended Next Post: I have decided to flit between projects to avoid getting too bogged down and bored.
So next I am working on the first of my Enforcers for Deadzone. The ones I am painting first are plastic rather than Restic, so were a nice easy assembly experience
Way back in the mists of time, my RT Space Marines were painted as Marines Errant. Most of those got repainted as Blood Angels when I got back into Wargaming a few years ago (for instance these:
)
But I have been hankering after another force of Marines Errant for a while, but can't really justify starting a THIRD Space Marine army.
So I am taking the chance to paint my Deadzone Enforcers as Marines Errant. Not the halved blue/white scheme, but the Badab War camouflage scheme as shown in the old WD compendium:
I have got as far as doing the legs on the first one, and I am quite pleased with the results - Any comments, anyone?
115
Post by: Azazelx
That looks great. My only concern would be whether you can stay motivated to paint that camoflague pattern on so many models. Will you be giving them the Errant chapter badge?
17796
Post by: Slinky
The joy is that a Deadzone force is so small!
However having painted the legs of one model in a whole evening's painting, it may be putting me off the idea of a whole 40k army in this style Maybe if I do go down that route it would just be the veterans.
Not sure on the chapter symbol yet, the Enforcers don't have big flat shoulder pads to fit them on, but I will try to get them in somewhere.
17796
Post by: Slinky
The first Deadzone Enforcer is done:
I am really pleased with how he came out, though it was hard work...
I also managed to get the Marines Errant symbol on his shoulder with a teeny tiny brush:
Another Enforcer is in progress now, then after that it will be another Mierce troll...

Nice work! It's got a very sci-fi look to him. Really nice work on getting that MA device onto his shoulder as well. I also really like the green furniture on his weapon. It works well. Maybe go with that colour for the entire rifle (or do a test?) or black highlighted with grey? The plastic colour makes it look much more like a modern/future war weapon.
17796
Post by: Slinky
I may well try a test of all "plastic" on the next grunt. Black would look good on a different model (giving the look of an AR15 with Magpul furniture):
but with a lot of the armour already black/grey on this model I think it might get lost.
I have finished the Enforcer sergeant now:
I am now up to 16 painted models.
Next up, a break from the sloooow camouflage painting with another Mierce troll, then some cheaty adding on to my painted model count with some resin sandbag emplacements that just need a spray undercoat and a bit of a drybrush
17796
Post by: Slinky
Made a bit of progress on my troll, but I got the sandbags done over the weekend as they were so satisfyingly quick and easy, with no need for careful brush control
I got these a while ago from a small Kickstarter (Daemon Forge, I think), they are quite nicely cast and useful scatter terrain on a 40k battlefield.
I am still counting these as painted models, so that takes me to 25 this year! Really didn't think I would get back into the swing of things so well.

Post by: Theophony
Nice camo on the enforcers. The symbol on the shoulder made me think of this though
Really nice sand bags. We're they prepainted, or all you? (Never mind, I was looking at the pic and not reading ) good job on them too.

Here's an old-school Ork dreadnought:
I stopped and started a couple of times as I didn't like the way it was going. The finished result is "good enough", but I have 4 more to paint at some point! (1 more 4-armed dreadnought and 3 "killa-kans" with 2 arms).
Also, as requested by AzazelX, when I had the camera out I got a "family snap" of all 6 Mierce trolls together:
Next up, a Blood Angels attack bike that has been annoyingly one of the only unpainted things in that army for a couple of years now and it's finally time to put that right!

Post by: angelofvengeance
Those Mierce trolls look spectacular! Particularly the 'uge cleaver wielding fella. Field those in Age of Sigmar for your trolls haha. Might draw a good bit of attention! I have fond memories of crippling an Ork dreadnought in 2nd ed 40K. Unfortunately for my brother's Ork warboss at the time, I shot its leg off with a Krak missile and it collapsed on top of him. Winning me the game lol.

The worst thing that happened to my Orks (tail end of RT or in 2nd, not sure) - One of my units got blasted by some Long Fangs in turn 1, and started a chain of rout test failures that saw most of my army flee right back off the table. I was very cross

I've also almost finished another 40k Marine casualty objective - Painted as a Blood Angel while I had the red out
That only leaves a Baal Predator and my "old-school" Blood Angels will be finished.

REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2015
So, 2015 started badly as I didn't even pick up a brush until April!
Then a few games of Deadzone got my interest back up, and in the end I painted 81 figures this year (using a scoring system where large models count for 2), which I am very pleased with.
The list of things I got painted:
DZ rebs x 6
Orks x 17
Ork Dreadnought
DZ Enforcers x 6
DZ Strider
Sandbags x 9
Objective Markers x 6
Aegis Defence Lines x 8
Mierce Trolls x 5
Mierce Troll Jarl
Mierce Norse warlord
Mierce Norse banner bearer
Mierce Norse sorceress
Mierce Norse infantry x 8
Blood Angels attack bike
To follow shortly: WIPs of what I have on my painting table that will be the first entries in 2016's list! Automatically Appended Next Post: And here are the current WIPs (slightly dodgy phone pictures, sorry):
The last 2 Mierce Norse Holumenn:
4 more Orks at a very early stage:
And my "big" project, an Imperial Knight!
I picked this up fairly cheap on eBay and was planning to use the Forge World resin House Terryn packs, but then they got discontinued. Then I was browsing through old WDs and saw Fire Wasps titans, and thought "why not", so I have now printed out some transfers to use, and started work on the leg plates. The body and weapons were assembled and painted when I got him, and will need a bit of tidying up, but saves me the job of painting all that bare metal
The transfers:

Here is the promised group shot of my Mierce Norse so far - This is 1110 "gold", which is a medium size of game I believe.
Also, I have made some progress on my Fire Wasps knight! The home-printed transfers went on quite well, but the yellow that looked so striking on the page just vanished, so I had to repaint that by hand, as well as filling in the wings and eyes with white. Note that I plan to paint the "toes" in red, and I haven't done the pipes/cables on the back yet.
I think the transfer looks quite good - any comments? I was wondering whether to put blue or green behind the triangle when I put these on the rest of the model (Shoulders, shield, banner etc).
And finally for this update I have got a bit further on 10 Orks I am painting for the "tale of umpteen gamers" - 10 is my target for January, so I think I am on track to get em done.
17796
Post by: Slinky
My 10 Orks are now finished! So I have satisfied my "Tale of umpteen painters" goal for January.
Pics to follow tomorrow.
I am now working on another Mantic Peacekeeper for Deadzone who will also act as a Terminator for my Marines Errant, and I am also working on the gun arm for my Fire Wasps knight.
My intention this year is now to paint significantly more models than I purchase - If I can get a ratio of 2:1 I will be really happy!
17796
Post by: Slinky
The finished 10 Orks:
I've also made a bit more progress on my Knight - Painted the toes, and the various cables on the body - Still to finish off are the weapon arms, carapace, shoulders, shield and banner, so there's quite a lot still to do!
And after a long battle with Fairy Power Spray and a toothbrush, here is my next Ork thing to paint:

I have finished another Deadzone Enforcer (who will also do duty as a Terminator for my Marines Errant):
That takes me to 13 finished models for 2016!
I've also got some more done on my Knight - This pic shows the "toes" and "hat" done, along with the body plates and the big melta cannon - I have also made a start on the base...

The Hrafnmenn look like lovely models, are they ease to base?

They went together pretty easily, just a bit of gap-filling to do...
The ones on the left just had spots in the rock for her feet - the other had a brass rod in the rock that vanishes into him in a very tender area, the champion definitely needed some assistance, so I have set his foot into a GS blob

I have a decision to make re my Knight's carapace - I was planning to paint it in yellow/black chevrons, but now I am leaning towards a camouflage scheme, to complete the homage to old-school Fire Wasps titans as seen in the Adeptus Titanicus days.
I may go with the same camo scheme I have been using on my Deadzone enforcers:
Any thoughts, anyone?
30672
Post by: Theophony
While the Camo scheme you have is awesome, I never like it on Titans. These are God-Machines after all, ,why would they need to conceal themselves. I'd say go loud and proud, but ultimately you get to see it every time you play so go with your gut.

I started doing that long ago. I didn't get very far, but perhaps I should pick it up and try to do the same again. Just getting the Fellowship done was the annoyingest part - all those alternative models and wanting to batch paint them so they were consistent.. I got halfway through Gimli.

Those 6 Uruks are done:
75 models this year now!

4 months of no painting activity whatsoever
I may be about to resume, however - I have sorted out my next Uruk Hai warband for undercoating, and actually feel enthused, so hopefully will be picking up a brush again this week

Well, after that super-long break, I have finally put paint to model and finished 3 Nazgul!
Not varnished or based yet, but the weather isn't great for varnishing at the moment...

Very nice, the warmer metal on the sword hilts and the blue-ish robes really work well together - Often nazgul look like black blobs with silver bits, but with the contrasts on these beauties you've avoided that very nicely.
Oh, and welcome back!

Oh, and welcome back!
Thanks! V kind words.
I have kept up the momentum, and since these are v simple paintjobs, 3 more are done!
I also have 4 Uruk Hai approaching completion

Oooh, Nazgul!
Ok, that sounded strange. I'm sure my reaction would be less enthusiastic if I were a hobbit.
They look great!

Cheers, Cleatus - The scenery on your blog is looking good too

A bit more progress - 4 Uruk Hai done (bar varnish/basing)

A change from LOTR stuff (though I have 4 Uruk Hai berserkers underway too).
I recently purchased a Cerastus Knight Lancer, and will be painting it up to go in my Fire Wasps force.
Got the carapace finished!

I have 4 Uruk Hai berserkers done
89 models for 2016 now

I really dig those Uruk-Hai. Keep 'em coming!

Another part done for my Cerastus Knight Lancer.
The Lance! I went for a kind of cracking electrical look which I will also use on the shield. The banner on the bottom snapped off, so I will paint it later

Uruk Hai shaman finished.
Also the first bits to show from my preparations to work through the LOTR "Journey books" - 5 trees based on 40mm bases.

The shaman looks good. Which journey book has trees?

Cheers!
It's the "Fellowship of the Ring" one, starts in the Shire, so the first terrain it directs you to make are some forests and hills. Then a river and Buckleberry ferry, a bit more challenging

Ah, the one that I don't have.

Nice work on the Nazgul, there - and the Uruks look great as well. I've got some Mordor Uruks on the go that I need to knuckle down and finish off. I just need to get inspired. You available to come over for a painting arvo? I'm sure that would motivate me to finish them off. I've got some trees, but getting a river sorted that would be large enough to need a ferry will be a task in itself. Long sheet of MDF, spakfilla for the river banks, spray paints for the base coat and resin/glosscoat to top it? A proper hardware store jobbie. Hm,.... I reckon I could actually pull that off.

Painting arvo sounds great, the 18 hour flight less so
The Journey Book river plans are only 8 inches wide, wooden base, shaped foam banks and filler for the water.

The Knights Lance is looking great, liking the electrical effect.

I have finished the last 3 Ringwraiths on foot to complete the 9. Will picture them all together once the bases are done.
Still got 9 on horses to do at some point!
Also, finished my 20 trees:
That takes my year's count to 96 - Hope to break the 100 mark before the end

The Ringwraiths look good. Using blue instead of black for their robes was an inspired choice.

Thanks, v kind! In real life the blue isn't quite so vibrant (I blame my lack of photography skills ) but I am quite pleased...

Alongside my LOTR models, I am trying to get my various 40k armies finished off.
The last thing I needed to finish for my old-school Blood Angels was this Baal Predator:
Not how I would choose to paint it now, but I wanted it to fit in with the rest of the army. It was an eBay purchase when I got back into gaming a few years ago, and is quite badly glued together. Still, at least it's done, and therefore so is the army!
Takes me to 99 for the year, so close to hitting 100

Nice use of earth tones--exactly what a Ranger would wear in the field.

Great work on the Dunedain. The Nazgul also look great - is that a blue-grey you've used for their highlights?
And that Predator.. I haven't seen one of those models for bloody years. Very cool old-school paint on the old-school model there, mate!

Thanks, chaps
Yes, it's a blue-grey highlight (stegadon scale) - I was going for an "otherworldly" look, it sort-of came off
A Merry Christmas to you, thanks for popping in here

In 2015 I painted 81 models, and my aim for 2016 was to smash that record.
Review of the year 2016
I started well, but had another 3 month ish break where I could not be arsed to paint anything at all..
Still, I broke last year's record and ended up with 102 models painted, based on my own semi-random scoring system
Mierce Norse infantry x 2
Mierce Norse ravenmen x 3
Ork boyz x 12
Ork Dreadnought x 1
Gretchin x 20
DZ Enforcer Peacekeeper x 1
DKOK command squad x 3
Imperial Knight(!)
Uruk Hai x 13
Uruk Hai Berserkers x 4
Uruk Hai shaman
Witch King on foot
Nazgul on foot x 8
Dunedain x 3
Blood Angels Baal Predator
Hill (Terrain) x 2
Trees (Terrain) x 20
2017 will start with trying to finish off my knight Lancer, and more LOTR models.

The first finished model for 2017!
Not anything I had planned to paint, but I found it half-done in my IG case, and it looked sad, so I finished it off
Making my 2017 total so far: 2

While I had my Imperial Guard green paints out, I got this Lascannon done.
It was originally planned to be part of a Praetorian army, but that's on the back-burner now, so I have left it with no crew glued on, will just stand dudes from the appropriate force on top at the back...
The weather is still no good for varnishing, so will go into the huge varnish and base backlog for now.

Post by: JoshInJapan
I like that gun. It doesn't look like the official GW Lascannon, though. Is it FW, or something else?
17796
Post by: Slinky
I got it from the "Curious Constructs" kickstarter a couple of years ago. Think you can still get them there or possibly from Zinge.
Originally came with not-Praetorian crew, they are shelved for now but will probably make a comeback at some point

Yeah, that's a sweet lascannon - both model and paint.

2 LOTR Barrow Wights done:
I tried to give the impression that the armour and weapons were real ancient artifacts from the barrows, but the wights themselves are purely spirits.
