Hi all,

My name is Eeps, and I am still a lazy painter.

After my initial foray into the world of P&M blogging (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/385344.page) I hit a massive road block and resumed by standard lazy at painting ways.

Pondering why this was, I realised that I had a few problems (other than preturnatural laziness)

1) No dedicated painting area - Its a pain in the arse to put up and tear down if you only have a little while to paint
2) Hate painting big things - Had a crack with the GW spray gun to paint tanks, and couldnt get it to work. Got disconsolate and gave up (see end of old thread)
3) Too many models - I realised that I just kept buying stuff and not painting anything, as I like buying and building more than painting.
4) Wrong kind of models to paint - Fed up of doing millions of troops, I wanted a small elite type army for a change after Jump FTs and Goff Orks.

How to remedy this!

I bought a desk+ nice chair + lamp from IKEA, sKo I had a little spot to paint. To go on my desk, I bought an airbrush to do big things:

You'll also notice the tasteful mirror to the side. This was a cunning piece of negotiation, so the dedicated painting zone could be sold to the other half as a dressing table for hair/makeup purposes. Ninja skillz.

Onto points 3 & 4.

I'd enjoyed painting termis and speeders for my other army, so I sat there thinking "hmm, what small, elite army is there with a lot of speeders and terminators out there? Ideally I'd also like something with an old book, so I dont get accused of bandwagoneering."

What could possibly fit the bill?? If you are not a zombie (or have read the thread title), then clearly some Deathwing is the way forward!

So says I, a I shall start a new army, but Ill buy it one unit at a time, and paint it as I go. That way I won't run into my usual problem of having to climb up a painting mountain. What started out well intentioned quickly went wrong, as I got drunk, went to the casino, and won a load of money.

Bollocks says I, I shall invest some of this in toy soldiers. To this end, I managed to buy the following (admittedly not all at once, but I did manage to buy it all without painting anything first).

As you can see, the story is not all sad, as if you have read above, you will realise I have actually managed to paint some of this. Huzzah!

Here's some pix so far:

Firstly, the core of any Deathwing army. Mr Dave Belial, the man so cool he doesn't need an Iron Halo. Pretty simple kitbash of some assault termi bits with some of the DA upgrade sprue thrown in for good measure. He also gets a skeleton!

Dave being such a cool character needs some friends to follow him around hitting things with hammers.

Sergeant Sofiel:

Apothecary Cassiel:

Banner Bearer Ophaniel:

Heavy Weapon Specialist Sulel:

And Stevens from accounts, the roving ablative wound:

If deathwing had red jumpers, he'd be wearing one.

A group shot:

Squad 2 is ably lead by Sergeant Zuriel (and his exquisite hair):

Has some hammer chaps:

And another cyclone:

Group shot:

After punching through 11 termis, I felt it time for a change and painted up a speeder. This basically put me up to c. 750 points of the army painted. Elite armies are great for making lazy people feel a false sense of accomplishment:

To round out my progress to date, I've also managed to kick off painting a predator. Fully magnetised up, so I can swap variants around fairly easily:

Pretty much just the greens so far, but I thought I'd stop to make this thread by way of additional procrastination.

What say you to my toys internet?

Libby looks great man! and i really like the Predator too, I can also sympathise with you, many times over the years i have hit that wall with certain things, for me it's tanks! I hate painting them as i can't get them as good as my single figs, but i'm learning to work through it with coffee and roly poly pudding!... it's a slow process

I like this army, and i could do with doing the same as you as i never get anything painted, but i'm painting an ork army instead (wheres the logic) but i wish you the best of luck with finishing this one

Looking forward to seeing more

Time for an update.

Not a painting one initially, but I've built the 2 tac squads and got some sand on them and the scouts.

Also picked up the GW paint station and bits to go with it to enhance my painting whilst watching the olympics experience.

Here's all of it:

Nothing particularly exciting with regards to the tac squads. Used the DA vets for the sergeants, and mixed in various odds and ends to give all the models some bling. Magnetised up the sergeants and the weapons specialists to give me some more options for playing (who knows might even get some free weapons with the new book):

One set of options for the sarges:

And Saturday Night Fever time:

Specialists in various configs:

I also felt like a bit of a kitbash, so I dived into the bits box and put together a PA Chapter Master with 2x claws and a storm bolter:

(and without woeful mold line!)

Pred is cleaned up, GS's, Brass Etched and primed. Just about to bust out the airbrush, and will hopefully have some further progress to report on soon.

Another magnetised pred notched up.

I was initially planning on painting a dread, but I havent really used them at all since the edition change. They fill basically the same role in the army as the preds, but have lower front armour and fewer hullpoints than the preds for more or less the same points.

As such I think I'll probably pop out another group of termis next.

Another squad of termis into the mix!

I've retitled my thread as well, as I have been so productive recently. Long may it continue.

I reckon I'll do another speeder next, then its a toss up between a bike squad and a land raider.

Reasonably minor update, but something I'm really happy about!

I've wanted to make a TH/SS Belial (Steve Belial) to go with the 2xLC Belial (Dave Belial, seen above). Been thinking of various options to use as the base, either Lysander or the FW hammer guy whose name escapes me. Finally hit some inspiration a while back whilst talking about finally finishing a Space Hulk full game with a mate of mine.

The TH/SS Sarge out of Space Hulk!

Bought one, and it arrived at work this afternoon. Spent a fair bit of time de-BA blinging him, and re-DA blinging him.

Got him finished and primed ready for painting tomorrow. Huzzah!

Lost some chunks of thumb in the process hacking off all the space vampire markings, and done some good hiding of holes with purity seals, but I'm pretty happy with the final results.

I've also extended the flirtation with power armoured models by putting together a few devs/tac squad HW subs. 4 Heavy Bolter guys and 2 Lascannon guys.

Fancied trying some Heavey Bolter Devs for a little while and I've got a fair few dev sprues laying around after buying them for missiles for my codex BA Flesh Tearer army. I'm getting good value out of Auto/Las Predators for taking out high AV stuff, so I thought some cheap devs for some ranged dakkadakka would be good!

As per, Sarge from vet box and is magnetised, other devs pretty standard as they are the babies of the group so haven't had much time to accrue bling.

Speeder discussed in the post above is about half painted, will def finish that then move on to Steve Belial and then I reckon either some Tacs or a Raider.

Time for a bit more progress, and a description of how I paint my DW scheme.

The Speeder first:

Similar to the first one. I use 2 of them often, so its nice to have a couple painted up. Don't think I've ever used 3 though, so the third might move to the back of the painting line up.

It does look a bit better than the above in real life, but its not really well lit here. I'm def going to pick up a light tent in the not too distant future. Theres a few photography nerds at work, so I'll get some pro tips off them about where to get one.

I had some time to work on Belial Mk II as well this evening, and I thought I'd take the opportunity to show in stages how I do the DW armour scheme:

After priming, Zandri dust and then Ushabti Bone with an airbrush:

Then chuck on a pretty thick coat of Seraphim Sepia:

Once dry it should look like this:

I've let it pool a bit on the shield in places, but its not the end of the world.

Drybush Screaming Skull over the top. Lots of passes with not a lot of paint seems to work best

Finally, a quick final drybrush with Praxetl White to get the high highlights. Again very dry drybrush.

Then just paint all the bits! Takes not long at all, and looks pretty solid.

Will work to complete Belial and then do a Land Raider for him and his chums.

Ta for now

A mere 8 years later, Corona has inspired me to get back into the hobby. I brought all my guys with me, so it seemed logical to pick up where I left off and kick on with some more Dark Angels. As making a blog last time inspired me to actually paint stuff occasionally, I thought I'd pick it back up & was amazed it was still here!

In the intervening period, I've got married and now live in a completely different country (yay for not having to pay Oz prices anymore), and I got toy soldiers on the brain once more. I popped down to my local gaming store and bought myself the Dark Imperium box and a load of paints (shippers won't let you move paints by air freight it transpires).

First off the block were the hellblasters from the set -

Reading through the new Codex, it seems like I can't take Deathwing as troops any more, so I'm definitely going to have to do some of them. I think I'll start with some scouts next. Black Knights also look good, so I suspect some of them will need to be purchased in the near future too!

Glad to be back here again with my internet toy soldier friends!

A mere 7 years, 9 months and 25 days later, the scouts are done!

I think they look weird with the khaki trousers so I had a bash at grey and I think it looks pretty solid, especially with the DA green armour.

I'm going to take a bit of a break from batches as its bloody exhausting! Think I'm going to punch out the interrogator chappy from the old DV boxset next.

As Im having fun again with the warhams, I've dropped a bit of cash on a few bits - New compressor (I did bring mine from Oz, but its not compatable with US electricity) and some stuff from the new(er) DA codices - 4 of the RW command squads, a box of infiltrator/incursors & some of the Phobos characters from the Shadowspear box set. I eagerly anticipate painting these some time around 2029.

Cheers!

Interrochap done!

Im pretty happy with how this panned out, especially the greens/blacks and bone, but the whites all look a bit goopy and crap. Tried my v best to do multiple thin coats worked up from a light grey like a good boy but its still a bit rubbish. As always though, it doesnt look as bad IRL as it does in the photos.

Some of my order came through, so next up is either going to be something Ravenwing and Bikey or a kitbashed master I made last night that I think might be fun. When the rest of the order gets here, Im going to have to get back into painting a batch of stuff but I fancy one more character first

My Black Knights arrived, so Im in the processing of building them.

I decided to make some extra HQ's to be their friends. Based off some looking around the internet, it seems the kids these days are fielding smash captains, so I thought I'd make one of those + I fancied a librarian to be the bikers friends as well. Thankfully my bits box made the transition to the USA with me, so I went dumpster diving.

Cap first -

Mostly comprised of some Death Company bits + DA vets bits, deblinged from space vampires and reblinged to DA.

Libby -

This is an unholy mix of the ravenwing sergeant and the libby from that box. Went together fairly OKish, but still requires some filling in so I've ordered some greenstuff and tools off amazon, and Ill finish this off when that arrives.

Other than that, I've got a chappy coming from GW (who is going to be bolted on to another of the DV bikes) and some inflitrators.

I'll finish building the Black Knights this weekend, at which point I should have a decent chunk of painting to do, so will try and hold off buying anything else for a bit as I've already created a massive backlog for myself (yet again!)

More modeling but not a whole lot more painting.

Have acquired and built a Primaris Libby, Primaris Infiltrators, 10x Black Knights + Apothecary and a Bike Chappy. Still got a couple more Phobos HQs in the post and my compressor just turned up so I’ve got no excuse not to actually paint some stuff now.

Here’s the bike chaplain - need to tidy up the GS but it’s a very easy build with the plasma bike from the DV set and the cheap in print Chappy on the GW site -

Nothing of real excitement in the rest of the builds, other than a bit of magnetizing of the infiltrators so they can be either a 10 man with a comms array or 2 5 man squads with an array each. All stuff from the box itself, you just need to swap the arm piece of the comms array round to the right hand as you only get 10xshoulder pads so you can’t really magnetize the left arms.

I’m now going to have a red hot go at actually painting some of this now. I’ve got some cool older stuff that I might do next instead too including a few DA Forgeworld dreads and potentially even some vehicles I bought for my FT army that might get the DA treatment. Either that or endlessly procrastinate and buy more stuff to not paint. I’ll try for option 1 though.

El Capitain - Called Aradiel now - Is finished. I'm generally pretty happy with this model + the whites came out a lot better this time, so I think I'm feeling brave enough to take on the BK Apothecary at this point, so he will probably be up next.

I probably also need to buy myself a proper macro camera so the photos arent so terrible - Unfortunately my old one didnt make the transition from Australia as the batteries exploded inside it... Has anyone got any recommendations for something cheap and cheerful?

He's currently supervising the unpainted mob on my desk - Still got a big hill of plastic to climb up!

So the painting white turned into a bit of a ragequit and the apothecary is now swimming in simple green. He's going to go on hold for a bit while I figure out a new plan. I think I might airbrush the white and then try blacklining him. It was not a fun experience!

I have, though completed the first 5 man squad of infilitrators - Squad Chamuel

You might notice these photos look a lot better! I found a cheap and elegant solution to the photography issue for $40- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01A6D2JVI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 can highly recommend

I also needed some filler for the kitbashes above and had previously not enjoyed working with liquid green stuff, so I got some of this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001950O3S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and its absolutely fantastic. Again, a big firm recommendation from me!

Next up is going to be a primaris libby, then I think one of the FW dreads and then I'll come back to the rest of these intfiltrators for a full 10 man and then I think the black knights. Definitely got my hands full for a wee while now.

Thanks brother - I'm trying with my old man hands

I've finished the Ven Dread, with a few weapons options. Past me did a pretty decent repose of him astride a rock which I still like. I'm getting better at cloth as well, probably just as well given the choice of chapter...

I thought I'd bought all the options available at the time, but maybe he got some in the new book as there's some that I dont have (Autocannon for left arm, Plasma/Multmelta/Flamer/H Bolter for right arm). Does anyone know if you can still get the Mk IV Dread stuff anywhere as FW don't make it anymore it seems.

Fighty Mode

Shooty Mode

I'm going to finish off the other 5 Infiltrators next, and then probably do the big black knight blob. Or at least half of them.

You've got magnetic melta bombs for when you really, positively absolutely have to melt some heretics

More of the squad

These took a really long time to paint, but I'm pretty happy with them overall. Next up is the bike libby I made above, and then I think I have to do the rest of this squad + at least one of their chaplain/Medic/bannerbro.

Thanks lads for the kind words @JulietTango343 you've earned yourself a unit too!

Here's the two new lads to keep the Black Knights in line - These are the two conversions above. I had to redo the bike arm on the chappy to get the join to look better, and Im pretty happy with how these panned out. Hopefully they are still playable in 9th and don't get squatted by their bigger, better new brothers (not that I've actually played a game in 8 years, but this virus has to end some time right?)

Chaplain Jeduthun (Meaning ‘praising’ or ‘judgement’, Jeduthun and he is a lord of the evening choirs of Heaven. He is known as the “Master of Howling” and leads myriads of angels in their chants and praise of God at the end of every day). This seemed both appropriate for a Chappy and can be shortened to JT for JulietTango343

Librarian Lahatiel (There are seven angels of punishment, and one of them is Lahatiel. He rules over the gates of death, the second of the seven lodges of Hell. He is one of the fallen angels, and is responsible for the punishment of ten nations.) This seemed appropriate for a smiting chap on a bike.

And some closeups -

Really happy with how the bone turned out on this guy. He looks pretty terrifying. I forgot the model itself had a pistol on the bike when I hid some modeling sins with another one. He can now John Woo some fools whilst singing angry songs I guess.

Happy with the cape and most of the detailing, but my whites in flat areas are still a bit crap. I think I might actually have a slightly dicey pot of White Scar as I had to rehydrate it. I think I'll buy another one and see (bad workman/tools and all that).

I think I'm going to do a Sammy on Speeder i just put together and after that I really need to do some troops rather than just constantly doing HQs. Probably the intercessors from the DI box and then the last 5 Black Knights. At which point hopefully my Indomitus box will be here and I can take a stab at those!

Thank you - Thats a big compliment!

On the update front, Sammy is done!

I had the idea of doing the big book on the front like those oldschool tomes (big decorative letter on each page), kinda like this https://blog.europeana.eu/2019/01/lighting-the-way-how-illuminated-initials-guided-medieval-readers-through-books/ and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out -

I also wanted to really differntiate it form Talon Master, and represent the iron halo equivalent he has, so I came across the idea of using the champion bits from the BK kits. I think it turned out pretty solid in the end!

Change of plan re next models - Im going to have a crack at a Land Raider Crusader - I've got a lot of termis from back in the day, and from what I've read about the new edition they are supposed to be pretty solid. I bought the FW DA doors for it as well, so I reckon it should look pretty decent - I just have a lot of cleanup to do, as when I did it way back when I seem to have done a pretty crap job of it!

Otherwise, this weekend I think I'm going to do a bit of a model audit and point out what I've got painted/not painted and see what I can build towards next. I've got a pretty big backlog sitting around it seems!

I really think I need to buy a proper light tent as well, as nothing seems to look decent in the photos - I promise this model actually looks better IRL!

I'd say it looks pretty darn cool. The book turned out sweet, and the Iron Halo worked out great. Digging the sword, too. Looking forward to the Raider.

WoW! really nice chappies! and the libby is great too.

I also used a ton of character bits on my landspeeders and land raider mostly left over from deathwing terminator boxes (man that kit come with a SERIOUS amount of cool bits) plus the odd ravenwing upgrade sprue I had lying around from back when the "ravenwing attack squadron" box was released.

Quick question: whats your opinion on the recently previewed primaris chaplain on bike? Frankly, i think it needs more skulls like yours.

Its definitely something that I really like about DA - You get so much bling and bits in all the kits that you can make really different models to anyone else - Classic example being that two of their biggest models Sammy & Belial don't even have models for the full option set. Before they made the Sword/Bolter Belial model, it was kind of a DA badge of honour to make your own Belial. Its definitely a modelers/collectors army for sure.

I think the base model itself is very cool, but I agree that bar the book on the front, its not as traditionally "chaplainy" as I think it could have been - I definitely think I'll buy one (well obviously I will as I have no impulse control) but I think its definitely a candidate for getting blinged up a fair bit!

Also, in keeping with previousm you now get to a model in the army - After the LR I'm going to do some intercessors - Do you want to be a techmarine with a melta poking out the tank or an interessor sergeant?

Ok - I apparently have 2,932 Painted Points and 4,509 Unpainted Points of DA. Thats more than I thought for sure. Going through these lists also made me realize that you can't put TH/SS on Deathwing Banner Bros and Apothecaries any more, so those are illegal sadly (and they are painted!). Its also made me realize that I've lost one of my two Stormravens in the Warp somewhere. I still have the magnetized bits for the second, but not the hull... That kinda sucks.

Sorry to hear about your missing raven. Do you usual play with friends you know or more of a random/tournament scene? It seems like somebody would have to be pretty uptight not to let you use your TH/SS termies at least as counts as, if not just letting you get away fielding them as is. Also the Landspeeder looks great. Can Sammael still ride that thing? I thought I read somewhere that it had been given to his new lieutenant. Either way, phenomenal work!

OOOH...techy or intercessor? ummmm

I'll take the intercessor please

I'm not as stuck in the mud as some fellow sons of caliban about things (although there will be hell to pay if they touch my beloved termies)

On the th/ss thing..best option is stick a cyclone on top (we still get to do that unlike anyone else) and bung it in a unit.

Apothecaries are very useful for deathwing (especially when they start raising the dead) so keep it, keep it behind a unit (preferably of knights and buddying up next to your ancient who will obviously be carrying the relic banner from ritual of the damned as it has been faqd to be in addition to its normal rules not replacing)

Have you got a termie chappy yet? its quite possibly the best terminator model Gw ever produced and is proudly leading my soon to be built crusade list ( I shall in return name him Brother Eepsenstein, along with his best mate apothecary Vazalenius, DA recruit from many worlds so different naming conventions are fine )

Back when I lived in Oz, I used to play with a group above a pub in Sydney. Was delightful! Its more my own anal retentiveness tbh - I want to have everything full WYSIWYG so Ill probably just get another box and redo the apoth/bannerdude. I really liked my banner dude as well

Paintjob was nothing special, but the conversion was fun. The text on the banner was basically bad Latin, sorry High Gothic, for "I bet we deepstrike mishap off the table and die" which is what used to happen to be A LOT playing Deathwing.

Ok done - You're up after the LR then!

I'm just hoping maybe the new codex allows them to take options again, who knows. Yeah I do - Thats in the backlog too. Its a metal one, so can be thrown as a weapon if in grave need. Will definitely get round to painting it at some point in the next 10 years - Its definitely a very cool model. I would be honoured to be your yelly skull laden chap!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Cancel that - I've just rechecked and whilst the Apothecary is dead, Bannerbros still get to have Thunder Hammers. Good times! That said, I'll probably strip and repaint this at some point as the paint job is a bit average.

I've also found the bits on ebay to do up a new DW Apothecary and Company Champion, probably grafted on to some of the Dark Vengeance termis. On which note I also realized that I didn't count the 2 sets of that + 4 razorbacks toward my unpainted horde. This is going to be a long blog...

Yeah exactly! There was some really good bits you could pinch from fantasy back in the day - I havent really checked out that model line since AOS became a thing - I might have a browse this afternoon for some promising bits.

I picked up a cheap light tent off Amazon to see if it makes the models better (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07922MDPG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). Turns out it 100% does!

Hopefully I can get the LR done of the weekend, with tech marine Matariel in charge. You'll be pleased to know that you're the Angel of Rain(ing down Melta on heretics)

Quick aside to answer this, sammael still has his landspeeder option but they added a new lieutenant option called a Talonmaster that uses the same bits and has some very nice rules.

Back on topic, that light has made a massive difference to your pics and yes, my termie chappy is also the lump of metal one

Looking forward to seeing the LR (are you planning on deathwing colours or greenwing for it?)

Ooh. Very much agree on the lightbox. Thanks for including the link. I actually ordered one myself as I have been pretty unhappy with my current lightbox.

So my Land Raider plans went sideways as it turns out my airbrush has broken, and Im definitely not painting that with a brush!

Inspired by you, I decided to do my Termi Chaplain instead - Clearly insufficient skulls so he got some on his base

I did the purity seals on the stormbolter in green so it didnt just tie in with the gun. Not 100% sure I like it so I might change them back later. Otherwise I think this turned out pretty good. I've now got more chaplains than you can shake a stick at. I've got a jump chappy model (but painted for Flesh Tearers, but I could strip it) and I've got a Chappy Dread about as well. I think that gives me more or less the full collection of mad zealots once the Indominitus box turns up!

@Princeyg - Do you want this guy instead of your intercessor Serge so we can do a swap into each others armies?

Hey

Very nice chaplain! I would be honored to be a member of the reclusiam!

Mines a little different as I went for mostly black, but with bone shins and pauldrons (for deathwing).

My stormbolters are green as i find it gels better with the lighter colours of my terminators but most of the other weapons have a bit of red on them.

Great work again though!
Honestly cant picture any self respecting Dark Angel collector not having a ton of interrogator chaplains (i've got 1 termie and 4 power armour ..and soon to be 1 primaris).

Sorry to hear about your airbrush...I did paint my Redeemer by hand (as my tiny flat is not conducive to spraying and I don't have a garden area) so I can understand as it did take AGES tobasecoat..fortunately, detailing was pretty quick.

You could do the wax seals in more purples and pinks than reds. I've found that purple washes and pink highlights on a dark red base are enough to differentiate from a purer red gun. I'll post my terminators where I did this here: compare the wax seal on the leg to the gun casing colour. Different enough to be distinct.

Thank you both - If I ever get there, you can both have an indomitus commemoration model!

Zee Land Raider is done! Its done in the same way as the Deathwing general - Its kinda drybrushing, but all over rather than just the edges. I think it gives it a look more like bone dust than the solid creamy/white most people paint them.

All the options are done so I can switch out. HunterKiller is magnetized so it can sit on top as well

Big fan of the Forgeworld doors to make it distinctly Dark Angels-y

The post tracker tells me my Indomitus will be here tomorrow - I think I'll try and paint some of that up next, probably with some light conversions to add some DA specific bling to the models

I've got a wee bit done, but not loads. Have assembled all the Indomitus box at least! Here's some stuff what I have painted since last post -

Half the intercessors from DI box set:

@Zergsmasher - This will be squad Zabesael in your name, one of the angels of the seasons

Thunder Hammer Belial - This was earlier in the thread from before the hiatus, but he got beaten up on my US move so I remade him a bit differently -

and finally - As I didnt have enough members of the reclusiam to keep everyone in line, I did the Judiciar. Same as everyone else, I really didnt like the default head, so I swapped that out and also added some Sang Guard wings for a bit of extra Angel of Death vibes. Reckon it came out ok!

@Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll - This chap is called Ga’ga for you (hey its hard to find Angel names with Gs and apostrophes. Ga'ga is found in hechaloth lore and is a guardian angel of the seventh heavenly hall.

Im seriously short on painted troops I think, so Ill do the other 5 intercessors and then try and finish the Indomitus box!

I am honored!

That Land Raider turned out really nice! The FW doors really are cool; I wish I had some when I did my own Land Raider (which is still unfinished as far as painting goes). I'm liking what you're doing with all the characters and stuff too. Keep it up!

Wings look good on the judiciar. I do feel a little bad for the guy that designed the mini, as almost no one I've seen wants to use him as is... Also, great work on the intercessors. Did you decide to go with red helms for the sergeants or is that a one off?

Nice job on the judiciar. He looks suitably intimidating, good choice of head too! I suspect he’ll get his standard head when I get around to him, my bits box isn’t very extensive! The wings were a great addition, and kudos for layering them inidividually and with more than one colour! That’s some patience!

ARE YOU SAYING THAT THE DARK ANGELS ARE NOT PASSIONATE ADHERENTS TO THE CODEX ASTARTES!!?!

In all honesty, I always like helmetless sergeants, so all of mine are bareheaded. I just fancied making the helmet stand out a bit, so decided to follow the Codex. I too feel bad for that guy - I have visions of the sculptor proudly showing their mum the model and she's there asking him why everyone's changing it...

Thank you sir! Here are your honour guard, squad Goneal (Gonael is one of many angel guards stationed at the gates of the North Wind.) I'm hoping your a Northener and this fits nice. If you are a softy southern type, my apologies

I know the open handed chap with the skull on his hat is supposed to be the sergeant technically, but one of the models had an accident with the snippers coming off the sprue so he got a new head (and as noted above, I prefer my sergeants manly and helmetless. Im sorry about your hairloss also.

Viterbi wrote:Wow, the wings on the Judiciar look amazing (as does the rest of the model)! Very fitting conversion.

Thank you! Say hello to Eradicator squad Vrihaspati (The angel Vrihaspati is the angelic guardian of hymns and prayers and appears in Vedic lore. Vrihaspati is described as an ‘instructor of Gods’ and was ‘first born in the highest Heaven of extreme light’.)

I hope you and your friends have an excellent time blowing up some tanks for me when we are allowed outside!

In other hobby news, I've purchased the ubiquitous Detolf! I've ordered some extra shelves that are on the way, and hopefully before the sun burns out I can fill this thing with minis!

Next off the block - As I realized above, the DW Champion & Apothecary can no longer have TH/SS, so I found the bits out of the DW box on ebay and kitbashed with the DV boxset to produce the below - I think they turned out pretty solid!

These guys are next up for a lick of paint and then I think I have to try and fill out my Ravenwing shelf some more - Im feeling brave enough to try their Apothecary again and then probably the other 5 BKs and then potentially some attack bikes and/or the Dark Shroud. So much to paint so little time!

Squad Goneal looks impressive, and will surely lead your Dark Angels to many a success! Oh, and yes, I am a Northerner, though years of living in the South have taken the edges off a little.

The Detolf looks fantastic with all the minis on it, good luck filling those shelves!

Gday - Long time between postings, but I've actually got a fair bit of stuff done.

The DV converted apoth/champion got some paint:

I bashed together another 2 TH/SS termis from DV to get my old command squad from 5th back up to a legal unit:

I did Lazarus and a Primaris LT to give the greenbois some help: Decided my LTs should get a bone helmet stripe (albeit they'll all be helmetless do be extra heroic)

I did the RW apoth for the 4th time. I still dont really like the white (I overbid the drybrushing and it really shows), but I honestly can't face stripping and painting this again.

aaaand finally - A 3 man squad of RW bikers with meltaguns.

The sarge has magnetized fist/sword/nothing options as well as a magnetized combi melta that I made from a bolter and inferno pistol. Reckon it came out OK:

I also amused myself by making a "gangsta" melta dude -

And I'm counting this one as progress too - I got some acrylic cut and some bits off etsy to make extra Detolf shelves. Spread stuff out a bit and added some Orks from my old collection to fill the cabinet out a bit.

With all of this, I'm past the 4,500 painted point milestone, but I still have a massive backlog + I'll undoubtedly be buying loads of the new stuff as well and making my problem worse...

I'm in the midst of painting some eliminators I found on ebay for a decent price. After that I think I'll probably aim to make some more RW - Probs a Talon Master and another 3 man squad at least and then I guess I'll have to get around to their Darkshroud. Either way, definitely something black.

And I got those add-on pieces for Detolf too, should be the same ones. Althought I only have some wooden shelves for now, need to update them to acrylic in the near future.

Thanks lads/ladettes. Its a pretty easy mod to do and the perspex is super cheap - Was maybe $20 total to add the 3 new shelves so well worth.

Since we last met, Dark Angels appear to have been buffed out the wazoo with the new pre-supplement FAQ. Im going to guess there's going to be a fair bit of bandwaggoneering, so Im glad I've got this thread to fall back on to show I was playing the Unforgiven before it was cool (and back when they were pretty bad at actually winning games!)

I've added an Attack Bike & another Talonmaster to the Ravenwing:

Primaris Chappy from Indomitus - Really happy with how this came out. The reclusiam in the Detolf is now pretty massive

Some ebay eliminators:

and an ebay Libby (part of Kill Team Cassius, but de-inquisitioned & de-bloodravened). As a side note, these look unbelieveably tiny next to Primaris Libbys

and finally, given that transports and firstborn are both pretty good apparently, I stripped and Dark Angeled one of my Razorbacks that was initially planned for a Flesh Tearer army. I converted the Lascannon to a Las/Plas in the kit, so had to get some 3rd party Lascannons that came out pretty nice. If anyone has the new SM Codex - Are Las/Plas still a thing? I've still got 3 more of these to get round to at some point

I did another points check, and with this + fixing a few mistakes that I'd made before and I'm at 5,400 total now. Proud of myself for cracking the 5k! Hopefully most of this will be legal in the new Codex.

I've also bought a Primaris Chappy + A new box of intercessors that are getting built and I've still got a massive backlog of old stuff too. I think I actually own past 10k points now and thats in built models, not including loads of kitbash options. I've got an order in for some other stuff too - A "proper" Belial and the Bike Sammael (now it looks like Speeder Sammy is dead) + the DA LT for kitbashing purposes and a couple of boxes of Knights. Don't think I'm getting out any time soon...

Next in line is a Tac squad for that new razorback/rhino and after that who knows. Might do another transport+tac combo or dive into the rest of the massive backlog.

Chat soon!

Thanks brother gobert - I think its basically the "standard" DA scheme - Mechrite Red > Agrax Wash > Evil Suns highlight. Wild rider highlight 2 for "special" models. Super easy, but it comes out well

Happy New Year!!

Long time between drinks, but I have done a bit of painting -

Tac Squad to go in the metal bawks -

Some Plasma ceptors -

Official Belial and Sammy models -

Primaris Bike Chappy -

Phobos Libby -

People seem to be bigging up the Captain on a Bike with Teeth of Terra, so I've bashed one of them together -

and a fully magnetized up squad of intercessors -

I've built up some grav devs + a drop pod and some DW Knights as well, so I'm probably still buying stuff faster than I'm painting. That said though, I re-did all the points of everything I've painted now and I'm just past 6,500 points. Very proud of myself!

I think I'll get the Knights done next, although I'm a bit tempted to do a Storm Raven or maybe some more Razorbacks or potentially even some shooty terminators. Definitely spoilt for choices with a fairly imposing pile of grey plastic staring at me.

So it seems that Dark Angels are good now? I'm now extra glad I started this blog - Not only has it been motivational to actually paint things, I can use it to prove hipster status that I was playing them before they were cool...

I finally painted my Stormraven that survived the warp (and I actually bought a second one to replace the one that didnt survive). As you'd expect, Its fully magentized up so I can fit whatever makes sense on it.

Also got another trio of bikes + attach bike done. Again lots of magnetizing so they can be whatever they want to be.

Melta Mode -

Plasmalicious -

Normal -

Attack Bike -

I've still got 5 of these left around + another attack bike that were going to be a Ravenwing Command Squad when that was a thing. I think I'll get these done up in the not too distant as I really fancy the idea of a full Ravenwing army. I've got a couple of Nephilim kits on the way too when they are back in stock + a Darkshroud/Vengeance so I think I'll focus my attention there for a wee while. That said, Im currently about 50% of the way through some Deathwing Knights, so I'll get those done first as they seem to be very very good based on what I've read about the new book.

More to come - Stay hipster out there!

Look at you playing Dark Angels before they were cool! Do you ride fixie bike and play synth?

The chibihawk is looking good, the blue windows look great, as do the lenses.

FairPlay on painting all of that black, but a whole Ravenwing Army would look amazingly cool. Good luck getting them all done up

Hi all - My codex and cards are in the post and I'm eagerly awaiting them. In the interim, some things have been painted and I've built 2x Dark Talon/Nephilims.

Firstly, got a Dark Shroud done. Obviously magnetized for guns and to be a Vengeance if it wants to be.

Overall, pretty happy with how the statue/stained glass look came out. Looks distinct without being distracting imo.

Some Knights done. These look super good in the new book, so hopefully can get them on a table at some point

And some phobos bros. I got a complement from my camera, which recognized the captains face as an actual face!

Saving my favorite til last - Obviously I have a love for Chaplains and I wanted a jump one. I was going through all my models and realized I had loads of stuff left over from an early Flesh Tearer project, including an Astorath. I hacked his jump back off and paired it with the Reclusiam Command Squad Chappy and I think it came out quite well. Astorath was glued together a bit too effectively, so I broke it pretty hard getting his pack off. This included snapping bits off the wings that went flying across the room somewhere so I had to GS some of the wings. Came together pretty well in the end. Although all the scrolls probably arent terrifically practical in combat, at least he looks suitably cool!

Gday! Got a bunch more ravenwing & some extra bits done -

3rd bike squad - 6 members strong (+an attack bike that I seemingly forgot to take a photo of)

Got all the magnet options again -

Plasma/Melta/Nothing

Bashed a Champion together out of my last spare DV bike as well -

Did some non-RW stuff too - jumpy libbys seem good, so I made one from the 2nd DV libby -

and I gave up hope on new sculplts for the named characters and got an Azzy and Zeke:

Problem with Azzy though is that he just looks so tiny compared to the new big bois, so I got on the Primaris conversion train. Definitely looks a lot more like the guy who could be in charge of the rest of them now!

With all these extra guys, I got an extra detolf + more shelving and lights kits so here's the whole team in their full glory - Up to around 8,500 points now.

I'll paint the Asriel conversion next and then I think I'll convert some unpainted DW for claws and a squad for dakka (I had all the non pure Thunderhammer ones made up for 5th ed wound alloc shenanigans). After that some more greenwing to keep Asriel company - I got a couple of gladiator kits, so maybe those? At this point despite all the progress there's still far too much grey plastic lurking about!

Gday!

Not a super productive period, but I got some stuff done that I'm happy with:

Primazzy and chum got some paint on -

Did some grav devs

And I finally overcame my hatred of white to do this guy

Next up is a few more plasmaceptors and then ???? Probably got to do a tank or 2 really.

I also bought a few bits for a SoB army. I'm going to see if I can retain some semblance of discipline and try and paint them before i buy any more for that army and do it a box at a time - I give myself about a 10% chance of actually achieving this goal though.

Gday!

Update time - Got a few varied things done these past few weeks - I even got a proper camera for my bday (thanks dear wife) so the pictures are a lot better. I'm taking these at night, so they are still a bit dark, but it looks a lot better. Once I get to grips with it a bit more + take some shots in daylight I think my photos should be a lot better from now on. Even this as a first go in a dark room look pretty decent to me!

1) A Dark Talon (Naturally magnetized to be a Jetfighter if its feeling that way inclined)

2) The Trio of Bladeguard Characters from Indomitus

3) Another Land Raider Crusader

4) Some LC Termis (including my favorite - The "Terminator" Terminator

I've got another FW Ven Dread that I've just primed today - Once thats painted Ill be at something like 9,990 points of total painted. After him, I'm not sure what I'll do to take myself over the magic 10k, but either way I'll be very proud of myself. I'll celebrate by attempting some glamour shots of the whole army together.

I think I'll give the loyalest bois a bit of a break for a bit - I've already bought the start of a sisters army (Cannoness, 2 x 5 sisters, 9 repentia + a superior) and I've promised myself I wont buy anything else until I've painted them. I've planned out a 1k list, so I'm going to paint towards that.

Here is Mr Dread!

You'll notice that the photo looks a bit more crowded than usual. Thats because I re-calced my points and this chap actually pushed me over the magic 10k mark.

Here's the whole gang together!

The Deathwing contingent:

The command staff:

The command staff we arent quite sure we trust yet:

The company heroes:

Knights:

First 2 squads of termis and their whip:

2nd 2 squads of termis and theirs:

The Ravenwing:

Sammy and the Talonmasters:

The rest of the command contingent (Boo to GW for making chappies/libbys legends!)

The black knights who say ni:

The bike chaps:

and the fire support:

Finally the greenwing:

Azzy and chums:

The (excessive?) command detachment:

The commanders of the sneakybois:

Their charges:

The intercessors:

some tinymarines and the motorpool:

The dakka:

and the air supports:

Was actually fun hauling this all out and setting up! The cheerleader effect definitely kicks in and makes it look amazing when its all together.

I still have about 5k worth thats not painted (+ I just pre-ordered some heavy ints ) but I think I might have a break from the loyalest of boys for a while as I've just picked up a few boxes of sisters and promised myself I wont build any more until I'm done with them

Now that is a sight to behold! Really impressive Eeps! The latest addition looks suitably at home. One question though; how does the Army compare size wise to the Pile of Shame?

Thanks brother - Really appreciate your support throughout the blog!

I think thats probably pretty close - Albeit its a very uneven company (all of the chiefs and not enough of the Indians!) - I've got all of it loaded into battlescribe. Do you know if there's a way to show the model count or anything? Otherwise Ill go stare at my Detolfs and start counting on my fingers.

Thanks brother! I think I'm comfortably beating the pile of shame at this point, but there's still a looooooad in it - I've got another Thunderhawk + Dark Talon, 3 more Rhinos/Razorbacks, 2 full tac squads, Devs (x4 of each weapon option other than the Gravs Ive done) + a Drop-pod, 2 x Gladiators magnetized up, 20 odd more termis, more blacknights and a speeder, 2 boxes of Heavy ints I just bought + sundry other random stuff from boxed sets and enough of a bits box to choke a bear. And that's ignoring the stuff I assembled/ half painted for a failed fleshtearers army thats still sat about and can be stripped and Dark Angeled if I need to. I think this blog has still got some legs in it still!

Love the army shots! I need to do some with my own painted stuff; I might wait until I get just a bit more done. You've done a really good job on the army overall! The Lion would be proud.

Thanks mate, really appreciate it! I was a bit of work to lug it all out, set up, photo and put away, but Im glad I did it. Im now boring non wargaming friends with these photos as if Im showing them my kid! Thoroughly encourage you to do the same.

I've done another rhino/razorback and Im halfway through the RW ancient. Will put some shots up when done. One day (when Im about 68 at this rate) I will finally have conquered the pile of shame.

Lol - misspoke. I meant Stormraven. Can’t say I’m not tempted tho... maybe this years bonus might get itself invested!
