Ironwatch Issue 62 has been released!

Check out the best of the first year of Ironwatch in the Annual Year One

The Star-Struck City Deluxe Edition rules are now available.

Quarantine's Basic Edition rules are now available.

Ironwatch: Tales of Fantasy, our first short story collection, is now out.

Mawbeast Madness, our second Ironwatch Games release, is now available!

Information on how you can help submit content to this fan magazine is below!

We're starting a new Mantic fan magazine (Okayed by Mantic themselves!), similar in quality and content to the Mantic Journal, White Dwarf, or Wargaming Illustrated. The magazine will be free to download in a pdf format, and will be published once a month during the first week of the month. We're looking for your help in making this possible, as this magazine will be drawn from the best that the Mantic community has to offer! If you're interested in any of this, message me and I can invite you to the Mantic Fan Magazine group on the Mantic forums (I'll need your Mantic forum username) where we'll organize and submit articles.

Edit: Submissions email address is ironwatchmagazine@gmail.com

If you're interested, right now we're looking for:

(THE BIG THREE. We need as many of these as possible at first, as this will really help flesh out the magazine in its initial format)

1) Artists: Fan art is appreciated and welcomed!

2) Authors: Background stories, fluff, or adventures and history, whatever floats your boat!

3) Searchers: Just looking for and helping us find awesome Mantic related articles of all kinds is helpful, as we then can ask for permission to reprint their article. This includes blog posts or forums outside of the official Mantic ones.

Other help needed (No limit, so if you want to help with more than one, feel free to!):

-Editors: There will be a lot of content, and the more eyes to help us proofread it, the better!

-Rule Designers: We're hoping to include a sample of special rules each issue, to add flavor to scenarios or give fun alternative gameplay methods.

-Battle Reporters: Any battle reports you have would be great! They add a lot of flavor, especially if we can show both pictures of the battle as well as diagrams of troop placements from a program like Vassal or Battle Chronicler.

-Campaign designers: We're hoping to have an ongoing campaign in the magazine as well, with a new flavored scenario that builds off of the results of the last scenario. Players will be able to post if they won/lost and who they fought against, and so we'll need authors for the overarching story, forum people to help moderate and track the web polls, and possibly rule designers for any special rules in the scenarios.

-Comic artist: A nice ongoing comic would be a fun touch.

If you're interested, let us know and we'll invite you to the Mantic forum group. Take the opportunity to help make the Mantic community even more amazing!

I like the sound of this...

Tell me, would somebody in this have to make regular articles / pictures / other for the PDF? Because while I'd quite like to help out every now and again, I don't think I can actually be a constant centre of Mantic material

Post by: darkPrince010

Occasional content would be greatly appreciated, as every little bit helps. It;s better that we have too much material, and have to save some for the next issue, then be sparse and release a light issue instead of a normal number of articles. I've PMed you with details if you're interested

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Quick note (I've also changed the OP to reflect this): You can submit articles to me via my email address in the OP. Please PM me before emailing them or post on here that you'd like to write an article so I can give you the general formatting we have (What's appropriate or not, making sure spelling is correct, making sure to include the author or artists name/forum handle, etc).

Is there anybody else who'd be helping with this from Dakkadakka?

I'll do some Scenarios, maybe with some short stories based on them, similar to the Mage Knight Collector's Guides

I'll also try to add other things if I can. Just don't ask me to take pictures of my miniatures, as both my painting quality and my camera are naff!

^ Yes, I'm doing the cover art.

Excellent taste in pony, btw. :p

Ah, yes, the pony. I took the test on Equestria daily, I think.

Wanted to be Fluttershy *grumble grumble*. My mate did the test and got Fluttershy, despite wanting to control dark magic and all that rubbish :p

And ooh, cover art! Any hints as to what the first issue will have cover-wise?

Post by: scarletsquig

^ Orc Greatax lurking in the forest amongst the gnarly trees and freaky mushrooms.

If I end up as the regular cover artist, I'll alternate between action covers and more passive, arty ones. Issue #2 has good odds of being an Enforcer Captain doing an atmospheric re-entry from space.

We've already got 5 pieces of black and white art complete, several article submissions and about 35 people signed up as contributors.

This is definitely going to be published, and very soon, article submission deadline for issue #1 is August 17th and it looks like there will be at least 2 issues worth of content submitted by that point in time.

Very nicely done first issue. Not everything in there was for me but the variety is bound to hit sweet spot for many gamers.
My favorite items were the dwarf modeling tutorial, the campaign stuff and the amazing paintjobs on the undead at the end of the book.

Thisis the sort of thing that PDFed and available for download on Mantic's site (including download link with their subscriber emails) could help get/keep people's interest.
In fact, the hobby stuff alone made into individual articles and available on Mantic's site could help draw people in who are searching for terrain and modeling ideas/help.

Keep it up, Guys!

I liked it first off, and I loved the skirmish article for KoW, the conversion for Dwarf Rangers, and the Warpath Battle report.
However, may I suggest adding more photos of the battle reports instead of maps? Or at least making the maps a little bit smaller and not as dominating on the page.

I've been looking into Mantic's stuff. I love the dwarves so once my chaos and tau are done their next on the block. My local area needs it jump started so I can gladly sign onto it (I LOVE MANTICS RULE BOOK). My strength has been in writing and I feel I can pump out all sorts of fine stories at this stage.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
All I really need is background to chew on and give myself a basis and points to relate upon and the factory will churn out the rest. My stories though are detail oriented and from there it may change upon circumstances so you are warned.

Beyond that, I also do like the idea of aiding in the creation of campaigns as well, so I shall gladly help out there.

I'm not sure how well my mantic minis would stand next to the others (painted for tabletop, really), but perhaps after I get a proper lightbox I could consider submitting them for approval.

@Grim: We don't really have a vetting process for minis, so as long as you're satisfied with them, we'd be happy to include them!

I appreciate that. I can't make them look better but I can certainly take better photos so until I get a better process for that I'll have to be satisfied looking at the nice minis everyone else has been submitting.

Thanks. I really like the painting and modelling guides , battlereports and the photos of minitures, armies etc.

I'm waiting for the ones coming out in parts to be finished then I'm gonna read them straight through, same with TV shows... I'd rather wait out the season and watch the whole thing at once

I do like the various articles and painted models as well. I'll have to submit my Warpath stuff, waiting to see if tax time yields a better camera.

I'm wondering if the image quality in the mag will be improving? I know it's done to keep the file size down, but the images being reduced to ..I dunno. 32 colours or whatever it is makes them look horrible, detracts from the magazine and makes the showcase and painting articles kind of pointless. And, well, all of the images, really.

Use the Scribd or Dropbox links for viewing. The 32-color is only on the Google Docs, because Google Docs compresses all images into low-color-count gifs (Some people had issues with accessing scribd and dropbox at work, so we provided the Google Doc link so eople with those restrictions could still see the articles)

I would continue to recommend putting the dropbox link as the first one on the list when posting the three download links on the blog.

It just removes the risk of someone seeing the poor quality images in the google docs one, thinking that that's all there is and possibly not coming back to it in future.

Also, for thumbnail images make sure you avoid screencapping the low quality google doc. The goblin on the front is green, not grey!

Other than that it is excellent. Text on the front cover isn't a bad idea, but the font and layout could be better. Articles are wonderful.

I'd have liked to have made more contributions lately, but unfortunately recent health problems have got in the way a bit.

I liked the interview with Hewitt in the most recent issue (#18).

Glad to read that the folks at Mantic are looking at replacing the godawful Men at Arms, but sorry to see that the full rules for KoW are only going to be print and digital, not the free version on the site. (Mostly annoyed because I have been trying to get Basilean Legacy, with nary a sight of it in the stores.)

I've been doing that. Well, not never coming back to it, but I pretty much download them, browse for a minute, then close it since the images hurt my eyes (almost literally). I then forget I've downloaded them and never come back to those issues.

I had no idea it's available without the highly compressed images.

Been reading through (mostly the scifi stuff, though I'm bookmarking most of the fantasy stuff for later when I'm in that mode), up to issue 6 or so. There's some good stuff. I especially like the short stories and such by Michael Grey, and a couple of the dreadball stories almost made me wanna get a starter set

That Kings of War RPG in issue 5/6/7 looked sort of interesting. A bit lite in terms of depth, but that's kind of indicative of something related to mantic, and not necessarily a bad thing. If I was reading it correctly, it would potentially let your Heroes fight kings of war units in the wargame itself, which would be kind of cool for epic battles. Instead of generating something in house or buying up another 20-50 dollar rule supplement, built in

The rules that will be available for free, aren't those the ones that are already up?
Basically full rules without siege, fluff, and the magic item listing---and with still available separate army lists?
If so, I can understand them selling a deluxe version with all those bells and whistles.

If they're pulling the basic rules (which to me are pretty darn close to being full rules) then that's another thing.
Hoping that's not what you're saying.

I have the print version, but I like having PDFs as well.

The additional rules for Zap! were quite welcome, and the Basileans are an iteresting army to do battle with. (I have not played them, only killed them....)

Going back to the older post and changing BL to Basilean Legacy, for the sake of clarity.

Possibly a silly question, but would you accept army lists?

I have been toying with a fantasy French & Indian War, with the orcs as aboriginal Americans, elves as French, the humans as the British, and both dwarfs and ogres standing in as mercenaries from the Germanies. (This simplifies things considerably - in point of fact there are British elves as well, but they are not put into positions where their loyalties might be tested.)

Plenty of atrocities on both sides.

Technology and tactics roughly similar to the 1750s.

And should such lists be balanced against base KoW armies, or just against each other?

Heck yes! We've already had an army list for (iirc) Warhammer Kislev (Or might have been Cossacks. My memories elude me), and so more stuff would be great!

As for balance, while it would be preferable (And more widely usable) if they were balanced against regular KoW army lists, it's fine if you want them to just be balanced against each other; Just be sure to note that in the article!

I skimmed the first couple of posts looking but I didn't see anything regarding how you would like to receive photo submissions. In terms of big-'we'll edit them to size ourselves' or 'smaller so our email/etc doesn't explode', and such. I've got some tabletop quality corporation marines, z-corp, forge fathers, and several things of a deadzone persuasion that are all begging for a photo shoot if you guys are still taking fan submissions for models. I know you got some proper "staff painters" so you might not need as many of those though.

Looking forward to catching up the last two issues, had a great time reading all of the scifi stuff leading up to deadzone. A couple of the fan authors really give the stuff in the Containment Protocols book a run for it's money, and there are lots of fun articles besides. Might have to print these out and bind them sometime for a coffee table book

The difficulty with being cross compatible with standard KoW armies is the effectiveness of the Land Pattern musket - 175 yard effective range (with close fitting balls) or 50 yards (with loose fitting balls), rate of fire between three and four shots a minute in the hands of an experienced soldier (again, with the loose fitting balls). Some twenty years ago I could fire a Brown Bess three times in a minute. I could either get four shots per minute - and miss with most of them, or three shots, and hit on a regular basis.

The easiest way of handling the increased RoF is to modify the stat line - with a unit being rated for experience.

Green, Regulars, and Crack... maybe. With Milishy being a separate unit type.

Maybe allow a choice between a doubled Attack or an added bonus to Range/Piercing - made at the beginning of the game. (While it is possible to carry both, it didn't much happen. More often troops went with the looser balls - RoF is everything.)

The orcs need to be skirmishers, and rules for night battles. (Elves and orcs can see just fine in the dark - when do you think that they will be attacking the humans?)

Contrary to popular fantasy convention, by the time of the French & Indian War (a nine year theater in the Seven Years War) the Algonquin Nation (American Indians) were largely using the exact same weapons as the Europeans - a bow and arrows may look cool, but....

Also - orcs are not the bad guys (and some are allied with the the humans), elves are not the good guys, and the upper echelons of both European powers in the area were riddled with incompetence.

The British managed to screw up relations with most of the tribes that would have joined them - at a time when they needed allies. Their fantasy counterparts are no more competent.

Meanwhile the French colonial government was amazingly corrupt, and their troops were over supplied. (Enough that it slowed them down.)

The French & Indian War also had some brutal early examples of combat fatigue/PTSD.

Part of the inspiration for this was the excellent song The Boatman's Cure, by George Ward -
I fought all through this wilderness in '59....
I still fancy I see shadows movin', time after time.
I still fancy I see shadows movin', time after time.
If it doesn't lift your spirits, it will leave you numb,
Best cure for shadows is a bottle of rum,
Only cure for shadows is a bottle of rum....

The Auld Grump - another influence is the song The Piper's Refrain -
I'll tell it you you,
As they told it to me...
By the light of the campfire, burning.
How by the banks of blue water,
Where we sported and played,
They once faced the fury of battle....

I sent some photos of painted Mantic models back at the beginning of March. Would they have typically been used by now? Also, what about army shots that feature both Mantic and Non-Mantic (and GW) models?

Apologies about the pictures! They look like they got left out on accident when I was swapping email systems. I've got them added to the pool of photos I draw from for new magazines!

Also, army shots with other manufacturers are fine, as long as the Mantic stuff is the primary subject of the image, or there aren't a ton of GW models in the shot (Just to avoid GW C&D nonsense)

So long, DakkaDakka... @ 2014/06/07 03:42:55

Post by: Azazelx

Understood. Most of the GW models at the moment are old, way OOP models. There's also ones from other manufacturers slowly getting painted up to go in there as well, so it's a far cry from a standard OK army being used for KoW.

My hat is off to the miniature painters featured in this latest issue. I've seen their work in past issues, and maybe it's just me, but I think this is their best stuff yet. Very useful color schemes (for, ahem, "quoting from") and some very polished work.

Did I miss it, or was there no Q and A this month?

I look forward to reading the articles - nice to include a choose-your-own-adventure.

Terrific issue, and congrats on hitting issue #40!

My only small note to readers, above and beyond the one already printed in Iron-Watch... The fan contributed army additions for KoW seem thoughtful, and a lot of fun (i'd love an actual book of unit/item/spell additions for armies formally), but even at a glance some of those are crazy broken. :-p

Wanderlust Stone for Ogres at 5pts would be the most auto-include item I have ever seen in my Ogre armies. :-p

We're proud to bring you the first Ironwatch Game: The Star-Struck City!

The Star-Struck City sets players in the sunken ruins of Casa-Omnicidi, a Primavantor city of incredible wealth recently risen from the seabed. Treasure and danger alike await your warbands, as they travel through the waterlogged city in search of the shards of the meteor that struck down the once-mighty port city and drove it beneath the waves.

Star-Struck City is a skirmish game, designed around playing with small warbands of 5-15 models on a 4' x 4' table loaded with terrain. Warband members advance, gaining new skills, equipment, and injuries as they survive the rigors of battle in this deadly locale. Climb up buildings and run between rooftops, leap down to ambush enemies from above, hire war machines and epic heroes from the Kings of War armies, and build your warband's reputation as the fiercest and toughest fighters in all of Mantica.

The rules are based heavily on Kings of War, so players of the full-size wargame should feel right at home. It's heavily inspired by other skirmish games such as Mordheim, but with the ease-of-play the Kings of War rules provide so gameplay is quick and decisive.

What we're posting now is the basic rules; Behind the scenes, we're working on a "deluxe"/full version complete with stories from Ironwatch issues, pictures, and art such as the custom piece we teased earlier from artist Boris Samec. The deluxe version will also be available for free, and we'll be putting up the deluxe version for printing off of Lulu at-cost if you would like a hard copy as well.

As the surviving veterans of The Star-Struck City have said: Casa-Omicidi now only offers riches or death. What will you find?

Man, now I have to get my Skaven skirmish force painted that I was working on for a different Skirmish ruleset.

I really like the KoW rules, but hadn't worked myself up to getting a full army yet, as it really ,eans I have to have two, so anyone I can wrangle into playing with me can have one (like my wife).

But for the effort of one army, that's like 4-5 warbands.

Kind of a huge bummer for Ogres, though. I wanted to go the GW Stormcast-as Ogres route like in KoW, but Ogres are so expensive that any normal starting warband (50gp) will be one guy by himself!

I'd advise if one or more players are starting with Ogres, to bump the starting gp up to 150; Alternately, allow the Ogre player to start with a higher gp, since other players should be able to catch up (slowly) over the course of several games through Underdog experience.

We’re excited to bring you the deluxe edition of The Star-Struck City. Featuring fantastic artwork from Boris Samec, custom miniatures and terrain images throughout the work, and rule tweaks to help further improve your campaign experiences, and much more. We’ve also worked to make sure the at-cost print edition from Lulu is as polished as possible, so if you’re looking for a hard copy for your gaming table we’ve got you covered!

We are pleased to announce the release of our first Ironwatch Annual, for Year One of the free Mantic Fanzine!

Started back in August of 2012, Ironwatch’s first year contained a variety of awesome content, and we’ve selected some of the cream of the crop for your reading enjoyment. Relive the exciting moments of Lazarus or the opening installment of Breach, learn about how to paint eyes on elves and craft your own Dwarven special weapons squad (complete with gore!), follow the adventures of the Weedy Elves and the excitement of the first Dreadball matches with A Word from Our Sponsors.

Please let us know what you think!

For over half a decade, Ironwatch has been one of the best sources for amazing stories and legendary epics within the world of Mantica. Now, for the first time, the collection of Ironwatch short stories is now available in collected form, and within you can find tales of deadly battles and cunning revenge, stories of horrifying mysteries and tender reunions, and legendary epics of stalwart heroes and vicious monsters.

great mag, is there anyway to download them in bulk?

Maybe bundling them in batches of 12 would make it easier to download older issues, just a thought.

Also dropbox links prior to issue 55 seem to be missing, here are a few examples

Announcing the second full release for Ironwatch Games, we’re proud to bring you Mawbeast Madness, from the mind of Glenn Allan!

Featuring all the high-adrenaline excitement of racing combined with the temperamental and homicidal Mawbeast nature pitted against the devious cunning of Goblins, Mawbest Madness uses the Dungeon Saga rules as a base to enable you to race your friends and enemies around underground tombs, forgotten lairs, and forsaken ruins! Use hidden passages to zip across shortcuts, pick up items to improve your own odds and impede your opponent, and of course get into good old-fashioned brawls along the way.

Featuring custom cover art from Boris Samec, this short-but-sweet rules supplement is a must-have for those seeking to throw down a checkered flag of challenge at your next tabletop wargame session!

Find out more here!

Oh shoot, I hadn't realized those older issues on Dropbox had been completely nuked. Dropbox did a weird thing with their link formatting in March, and I had thought I had caught the problems it was possibly going to cause. I'll do my best to repair them in the meantime, but due to current real-life complications it might be several months before I can get to those. My apologies!

Also, good idea for bulking the downloads! That's something relatively-easy to do via Google Drive, so I'll see about trying to get that up later this week.

None, really.

Dakka Dakka has a Facebook Page which randomly (yes, randomly!) posts links to various posts here.

We're looking into ways to make sure that controversial (and quite often locked) threads don't end up there, but it is a work in progress.

Dakka Dakka as an 'entity' remains quite apolitical, as seen on the Rules of the Site page here:

https://www.dakkadakka.com/core/forum_rules.jsp

So anyway, this feels like a reflexive overreaction to something that was misunderstood - wish they would have asked for clarification first.

But best of luck to them wherever they post, of course!

Ok I think I see the post referred to. Yes, it's disgusting and I'm glad to see it was locked, but it is still up there on Twitter and Facebook. A removal and a quick apology of "This is not the type of discussion that we represents us" would go a long way.

Well, not sure about that last part there There are any number of thread topics that will invariably lead to a poop fling and a lock within 3 pages tops, so the thread in question actually seems to pretty accurately describe the community here. Start another thread on the same topic, or a similar one in a week or two, and see if it goes any differently.

Hmm, very curious about what topic this was, anyone want to link?

To darkPrince, good work on your magazine. Some feedback for improvement is that the pictures often have a too heavy filter, which makes the colors look very unnatural. I bought your book as well, and it is the same thing there. I would suggest trying out some different photo editing. Lightening the image and increasing contrast a bit often goes a long way IMO.

Different sections in the mag could also often use a clearer separation. No need to conserve pages in an e-mag

Yes, that's been cleared up already. My point was, regardless it was - and still was of the weekend - promoted on official Dakka social media. The results of which are a fractuing of the community such as this. However small, a simple delete Tweet and an apology that a mistake was made would go a long to show publicly that those views are not the image Dakka wants to have with the wider world.

And with that, I'm done.

If this is the offending article "I'm Not Sexist, But Women Are Ruining The Hobby And Here Are My Reasons - an Essay" then that is a political statement, and the apolitical response is to neither agree nor disagree.
Personally I'm not particularly keen on any business that takes a strong political view towards either the left or right. It is generally wise for business to be apolitical as far as possible, because the political landscape can swing in either direction. We are very diverse in our gaming group and we've all agreed long ago to not discuss politics or religion. It's just better for everyone.

I'm sorry but what? The apolitical response to calls to discriminate is "no, that's not ok". Passively consenting to it isn't apolitical at all.

Not quite. If someone wrote a post extolling the virtues of Apartheid as implemented by the Israeli state and these are the 3 responses:
1) yes it's great
2) no, that's not ok
3) no response

Which of these 3 was the apolitical response?

Not really an apt comparison, as the ramblings of one inadequate dude are not the same as the actions of a government.

Dakka FB can (and should) remove posts that cast the hobby in a bad light. A post that aims to exclude 1/2 of the population of earth from the hobby definitely fits the criteria for removal.

Thread locked for derailment.

We can have a discussion about how the Dakka Dakka Facebook account links with Dakka Dakka content (if someone wants to start a thread in the N&B subforum) but the summary is: the owners and staff also do not want to see controversial content promoted through Facebook even if there is some room for discussing controversial subjects on the forum itself. We're working on figuring out the best way to screen for that.
