Its that time of the year where thousands of 18 year olds (and a fair few people of other ages) disappear off to university.
This thread is so people who are going to go, are at, have been to or want to go to university can talk about it and possibly work out if other Dakkaites? Dakkanauts? (I don't know the correct collective noun ) are going to the same uni, or might have been at the same place, at the same time, or even the same course and not known each other.
So yeah, I'm off to Sheffield on Sunday to study Mechanical engineering, and am starting to get nervous
Anyone else?

I did biomedical engineering at Sheffield - there are a few game stores around the place and there is a wargaming society at the university (though I never attended it). From what I remember some of the gaming stores give a discount to wargaming society members (I am pretty sure the one on the top floor of the Orchard Square did (the small shopping area just before you walk onto the main pedestrian area at the end of West Street)).
I don't claim to be an expert, and it was a few years since I was there, but if you want to know anything about Sheffield/university/engineering, drop me a PM.
I'm currently doing an MSc at Keele.

Is that the one near TK Maxx? I've been there twice, never really got to explore either time, so I only really know my way from the mechanical engineering department to dominoes, and the long way from the engineering department to the students union.

Yeah, it is the one upstairs on the right of TK Maxx (as you look at TK Maxx). They used to have a bits draw there which was pretty awesome, and they had lots of 2nd hand models too.
If you go out of the main entrance of the engineering department (the doors facing St Georges Church) and essentially just keep walking forward (though you can walk round the right or left of the church, or even through the grounds) and cross over the tramline/main road you get to the union in about 5 minutes.
Not sure if you are interested but there is a forbidden planet if you go from the TK Maxx onto the main highstreet and turn right, following the non-pedestrian street past the fountains on your left. Keep going and it will eventually be on your left down near the end.
If you are interested in materials science or biomedical engineering and get the choice to select modules, check out the MAT modules and look for Dr John Haycock - he is a really nice guy and does some good modules, especially if you are interested in bioreactors or nerve cells and so on. You will almost certainly have some biomedical engineering students in some of your MEC lectures, so tell them I said hi and for them to do his modules whenever they can
Also, avoid advanced mechanics of solids (I think it is either a 3rd or 4th year MEC module) like you would avoid the plague unless you are freaking awesome at maths.

no seriously, you must not fail him. Evaluate what you have due when, and how much everthing is worth. If you have an assignment worth 5% one day, and a midterm the next..... and you don't have time for both, then screw the assignment. Losing 5% is better than losing 30%.

And thus the circle of life is complete.
Also, on a kind of related note - as a student it is really important to eat well. Don't spend what money you have just on beer
Tesco (and probably other stores) sell reasonable frozen meals (like the Tesco light choices) for about £1 each... add in a handful of frozen veg and you have a reasonably healthy meal for under £1.50. Plus you can "cook" it all in the microwave

Interesting, if I wasn't leaving Sheffield to go and study at Oxford (Brookes) I would have asked if you wanted a game.
I wouldn't say there are very few gaming stores in Sheffield at all. The GW in town is really friendly, there's an independant store within 100 yards of it and then a few hundred miles further up is a premium store which offers 20% discount on new GW stuff and I believe 15% off privateer press. There's also a club called Steel City Wargaming. I'm a regular there when not out of town. Would definately recommend checking them out.
So yeah, I've lived and gamed there for 11 and 9 years respectively, so if you want to know anything that isn't about the University I'd be more than happy to help. I say not the university because all I know about it is that it's very good for engineering, which you clearly already know.

Quite a bit better than noodles. The 7/8/9p noodles (not sure how much they are now I have a job and enough money to actually buy food ) are certainly there for those who are in need of something to fill the stomach
But even worse than that, I know someone who wasted all their money and ended up having to "live" for a couple of months at the end of term by making their own "bread" using just flour and water, and then frying it in oil

I never understood this. I never wore sandals when I had a public shower, and the vast majority of my public showers were taken in a football locker room with a bunch of sweaty dudes that were also barefoot.
I've never once had foot fungus.

if the public showers are in such a bad state of hygiene, pee on the floor. I'm serious. the ammonia in your urine will should kill anything breeding on the shower floor ground. It's a given though that you should be wearing slippers once you step out of the shower area, but strictly speaking, if the shower area itself is a hazard.... peeing on the floor is a solution to killing the germs when the janitors fail to show up on a regular basis to sterilize it.

Community college next year for me. I can't afford to get my Bachelors degree at one university, so I'm going to get my electives out of the way at community college. I'm gonna need to shop around to see what colleges/universities will accept community college credits, as some of them don't because they want people for the full 4 years. Really?? I have a couple of friends that go there, I think
I'm onto day 3 of Freshers and already have lost my debit card
Ah man, bad luck. Managed to keep track of my debit card so far
I get new one next Tuesday and will have to survive off dried pasta and rice until then
And i've had the card for ~1 year but it's the first time it's been missplaced, it was probably at the uni shop but only discovered after closing time so decided playing it safe so cancelled it
Good choice, my first response was 'cancel it! For God's sake cancel it!' BEtter to struggle for a couple weeks than struggle for the rest of the semester because someone used all your money....

Yeah The nearest branch gets it next Tuesday but I've got lectures all day so I'm going to pick it up Wednesday

Hmm, do they not send them in the post these days? Or are you purposefully going to pick it up?
Still, glad you are getting it sorted.

Just moved into halls so the card would be sent to my normal home so I would have to pay to travel there to get it so its just easier to collect it
