Post by: Reecius

I will continue to update this thread with new work as we complete it!

These are some Necron Character models we painted up for a client. They have some nice OSL techniques that really set them off.

We're always taking new commissions, check us out to see our rates and previous projects: http://www.frontlinegaming.org/custom-terrain/paint-service/

Thanks for any feedback!

They look great.

1 thing though, the pictures seem dark. It may be my computer at work but if not maybe some better lit pictures next time. It is hard to see some of these.

They were really dark, but I brightened the colors with our photo editor.

We need to get a photo tent but we just dropped a big sum of money on the deposit for the BAO venue. We'll have to hold off on new equipment for a little while.

Thanks, guys!

Yeah, the Necrons came out really well. The Dark Eldar I especially liked as they came out so dang close to the book, which is exactly what the client asked for, we were really happy with them.

Are the DE an example of your level 3 painting?

@Overwatch

Yes, the DE are our Level 3, with custom basing and freehand work.

Thanks! And yes, feel free to plunder ideas! That's what the internet is for: inspiration!

Our client really enjoyed the Desert IG we did for him previously and asked us to add to it, which we were only too happy to do! These vehicles have a simple, but very striking color scheme that uses an airbrush to fade from a flat brown, to a rich, yellow brown, accented with a brownish metal and dark brown to give it a very nice, dessert feel. This is a level 2 paint job.

As always check out our paint section to see about having Frontline Gaming help you finish your next project!

I think the cammo would look better if it was masked with putty before you air brushed the red color. it would look less "sprayed on".

Frontline Gaming's Completed Commissions Thread @ 2012/12/01 23:24:21

Post by: Reecius

We actually purposely didn't use putty or tape because we were shooting for that soft edge camo. It's a matter of preferrence as to what looks better, I have done both. My own IG have a hard edge on the Camo, and it is quite a different look.

You coming to the BAO, Levi? We have a table building contest this year! Your Ork table could win you a few hundred bucks in prizes!

Frontline Gaming's Completed Commissions Thread @ 2012/12/02 00:48:26

Post by: Grimgob

Of course I'm coming and I was thinking of building a new table just for it. Was thinking of giving it to a friend or just auctioning it off after the tourny.

Frontline Gaming's Completed Commissions Thread @ 2012/12/03 21:28:23

Post by: Reecius

Awesome! Be good to see you again, buddy.

And your table last year was one of the main inspirations for this contest this year! It looked so cool we wanted to try and get some more folks excited to build awesome tables, too. We want to build really cool, unique tables like that but we just don't have time as we have to make so much terrain.

Oh, and if you need help selling the table at the event, we'll definitely put the word out.

I second that about the highlighting on the wolves. It's unfortunate that the bolters weren't drilled, even if they aren't meant to be top standard paint jobs.

That Thunderhawk looks sweet, I like the pink Aquila on the front.

Hate the model, which isn't your fault, but I love the paintjob. My only critique is the sword. The faces seem a bit off with the colors used, not bad, but a bit off imo.

Again, my photography skills undersell the model, but it is brilliant, very well done.

The client specifically asked for purple tones on the power weapons and in real life, it looks awesome.

Here are some more minis!

The crazy looking Slaneesh Terminator is a custom model that our client made using a 3D modeling program and a 3D printer! Very cool.

Imotehk was a special piece, and the client asked us to do some really specific airbursh work on the cape, which was a new experience for the artist. The model also features a custom base and light weathering.

Dinobots!!

These very cool looking level 2 paint job Chaos units are particularly cool because our client sent the Maulerfiend / Forgefiend fully magnetized so that it could run with any weapon configuration. And, I have to say, the Forgefiend with the Maulerfiend's arms looks waaaaaay better than with just the gun arms. I think this is an idea we will most definitely be stealing for our own use! The paint job itself is a combination of airbrush work, weathering powders and some really clean line work for a cool, fade from brighter metallic to darker.

Thanks guys! We're always taking new commissions if anyone is interested

These Adeptus Mechanicus models are painted to a level 2 standard with no basing done per the client’s request. The weapons on many of the models were left off also per the client’s request as he wanted to paint them himself. This army will look really cool when it’s done!

Yeah, this was a particularly pretty level 3 with freehand work and OSL. Just came out great.

Glad you guys liked it as much as we did!

@Kevv6

We charge to drill the barrels as it is time consuming (very reasonable price) but pretty much no one opts to have it done.

We do as the client wants!

And no offense taken, of course.

The riptide looks good and seems to stand above the rest in terms of quality. Out of curiosity, I checked your pricing sheet, you charged only around 100 labour for that model?

Frontline Gaming's Completed Commissions Thread @ 2013/04/27 00:15:33

Post by: Reecius

The Riptide is excellent, and it is a level 3 paint job with level 3 basing, and freehand work.

We have over a dozen artists, and their levels of inspiration and the techniques they use vary from project to project. Not every project is going to look the same. Plus, clients make very specific requests in terms of what they want at times, and sometimes those color choices etc. may not be what we would have chosen. We're often asked to match what a client already has, which limits our creative freedom.

In other words, every project is different.

The vehicles are fantastic with the flame effects on them, but I personally don't like the infantry (I'm not the client, so no worries ). I think that the magma bases mixed with the fiery effect on the sword and on the models in general is just too much.

Frontline Gaming's Completed Commissions Thread @ 2013/05/30 02:30:07

Thanks for the critique.

Yeah, the vehicles came out brilliantly. We really liked the hot rod style flames, that was a pretty cool new technique we tried out and it came out fantastically.

The infantry gets mixed reactions. I like them a lot, personally. They do have a really strong feel to them though, no doubt.

Thanks! We appreciate the compliment!

New commission!

This was a really cool commission we completed for a 40K player back east. He requested that we make him 40K Daemon units using Fantasy models. He wanted a Lich King theme from Warcraft 3, which we were happy to oblige! These are level 3 paint jobs with level 3 basing. The wings are not attached to the Zombie Dragons as it is easier to ship them that way. - See more at: http://www.frontlinegaming.org/portfolio-items/warhammer-40k-daemons/#sthash.uMynDjPm.dpuf

This level 3 paint job Hive Tyrant came out great. It is fully magnetized with all options, including some killer Devourers we took using parts from the Tyrannofex kit. You can run thi smodel as a Hive Tyrant on foot or winged. The pictures really undersell the model, the color is too dark and you can’t see the beautiful blending on the carapace. - See more at: http://www.frontlinegaming.org/portfolio-items/hive-tyrant/#!prettyPhoto

This was an interesting commission. The client asked us to paint up 3 separate Tyranid Warriors, each to level 3 with level 3 basing, each in a different scheme so that he could see what each scheme would look like. He would then choose from among them for his army. Here is the result, each a level 3 paint job with level 3 basing. Thanks, Moltar! Haha, and yeah, the boots are there to tie him into the Biel Tan theme, but I thought they looked like GoGo boots! The model rocks though, the blending is fantastic but the white boots jump out a lot. The thing is, the other option was green which looked awful when we tried it out.

Looks sharp!! I like your painting style!

I read an earlier post about some tanks, someone commented about the cammo looking "sprayed" on, let me assure you it looked fine! When the Army paints vehicles it's sprayed on, we didn't brush on the cammo, we painted our own vehicles, we didn't send them off to a high speed cammo painting place... lol Painted out own and it looked sprayed on...

I got update pics on Saturday, I am really happy. I am thinking that may be the army I take to the LVO!

You should have some of your artists do some video tutorials on these techniques. While I have almost no time to paint anymore, hence the commissioned Eldar, I think they do some great work. That pearl effect using glazes is a prime example of what they have to offer to the other painters in the community. Just some food for thought for after you're done having no life or time due to the LVO.

I love this effect! If I may ask, how did you get the glaze to dry in the varying thicknesses without creating rings? I've been having bad luck with my attempts at glazes due to how they dry...

@Brillow80

It is stippled metallics with a glaze of choice over it, comes out great! To avoid rings? I honestly don't know, we haven't had that issue, but try using a medium.

Nice looking, WB's. A little too bright for my personal tastes, but still well done. Any reason for the completely bland bases or for not painting the plasma coils on the plasma guns?

Usually this is because of what the customer asked/paid for. For example FLG recently painted a small Iyanden army for me with bare bases because I wanted to base them myself. It's funny how often this topic comes up in the various commission painting threads.

@Moltar

As OverwatchCNC pointed out, we do as the customer asks =) Sometimes they want things that other people may not agree with, but we do what we are paid to do.

@Thread

This Tau commission is a great example of a level 1 paint job with level 2 basing. The basing really helps so spice up the models a lot, and the simple level 1 paint job is great for a table top standard to get you playing the game with a fully painted force on a budget! - See more at: http://www.frontlinegaming.org/portfolio-items/tau-suits/#!prettyPhoto

This may be OT, but i'm going to try anyway, HOW on earth did you get that Chaos Star imprint on the gaming board? I'll be making my own board this summer and I'd like a chaos star on my board too The armies look amazing btw, I love your basework as well, especially on the space wolves

Incoming!
I don't like the Transformers Knights.

They look unfinished, and are banking more on the fancy airbrush job than attention to details. Really, they look half-assed.
None of the filigree was done, the autobots logo on the shield looks derpy, and as pointed out, the yellow one's melta cannon/shield is upside down (this might be intended, but still). Additionally, where's the individuality, other than in color?
And I have no idea what's going on with the boring, lifeless bases. Graham crackers?

I don't know what the buyer wanted or how much was paid, but if I had commissioned someone to do Transformers Knights, I would not be pleased with this result.

But hey, this is just my two cents, and I am critical of commission work. The airbrush work is very nice.

Edit: Apologies if ya'll think I'm being rude, but I'm just giving my opinion and the opinions that some at my FLGS have discussed when we saw these on the FG site. We really appreciate what Reecius and the team at FG do for the gaming community and know they're a nice group of dudes. Just felt like this paintjob missed the mark from the standard of work we're used to seeing.

Not everyone likes every commission, no worries =)

We don't take it personally. The client was ecstatic with the project, and that is our goal.

Bumblebee's gun is upside down in the photo, doh! But, they are magnetized so it is as simple as twisting it and it is all good.

Do you think you guys could take some better pictures of your paint jobs?
You guys do some great work, but it's hard to tell when the photos don't line up with the alleged quality of the job.
Specifically, the "masterclass" photos above. I think you're doing a disservice your top level painters.

Photography is a skill unto itself and one that I freely admit we are not experts at. We lack the know-how at present to take better pics, but, we are aware that they don't present the best possible image of the beautiful minis. We are working on it, though.

Here's a first tip Reecius: Get a curved background.

Gherrie Schenk aka Corvus has put some great backdrops for miniatures out on his blog: http://corvusminiatures.blogspot.be/2010/04/cloud-backdrops-for-your-miniature.html

Print them on a A3 or even A2 format on mat photo paper and just curve them slightly. Don't create a hard fold in them. Aim at least 2 good light sources at them and you'll get some way better pictures already.

Don't shell out for a big expensive DSLR btw. Their limited depth of field due to their large sensors makes it harder to take shots of miniatures... A higher end compact camera will get you good results as well.

Oh, I'm just pointing you in the direction... It's mostly Corvus' work, not mine...

Here's part of his photography setup btw: http://corvusminiatures.blogspot.be/2010/09/newest-photo-studio.html

You can get very far with just 2 lamps and tinfoil to create your own reflectors... Having a dedicated spot for it like an old aquarium does help loads. I'm sure you can grab a really cheap foggy one on craigslist or something.

I'd paint the base edges black; it'd help cover the nice chunk along the front base edge of that Chaplain.
Also, that static grass is...colorful?
