*Update* The next time we are meeting is February 8th at noon at Manhattan Beach Community Church *Update*

Hi Everyone.

So some of my friends and I are hosting a Warhammer 40k game night to try and find more local players to game with. The event will be on Saturday March 2nd at my local church in Manhattan Beach (no religious stuff and all are welcome; it’s just the place where I can rent a room for free) from 5:00PM till midnight. We will have two tables set up with homemade terrain (built by yours truly).

The goal of the evening is to meet new people, play few games of 40k, and see if there is any interest in starting a gaming club in the area. If your new to the hobby or haven’t started playing yet I will be bring both my Necrons and Dark Angles armies and would be happy to share and introduce you to the game.

Like I said all are welcome regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion however some behaviors are not welcome. Firstly no recreational drugs or alcohol are allowed (sorry beer-hammer folks). Secondly language must be kept friendly, this means no cursing or offensive language. Lastly, this should go without saying, be respectful of other people and be a good sport about gaming. If you want to come please be willing to follow these rules.

If you are interested in joining us or what more information please let me know by emailing me at GameNightPlayers@gmail.com.

Hmmm, that's quite short notice.

If you had given me earlier notice, then I'd might have been able to make it.

Good luck!

Well one of the goals of the evening to to discover if there is any interest in meeting regularly, so if you are in the area and are looking for a group to game with it would still be helpful to know.

So Saturday Night was a lot of fun and we are going to do it again next month. We are thinking the 6th or 12th of April, let me know what dates work for some of those who were interested but couldn't make it. I wanted to do a battle report on one of the games but my phone died after turn one. So instead I am just going to share some photos I took before that.

Our Daemon happy despite his new Codex just lost to the Necron player, all agreed he got some pretty awful luck with the warpstorm table.

Chaos Space Marines going up against Imperial Guard

The CSM got in too close, partly due to a 4+ invul save for an Archeotech in the middle of the map that stopped the battle cannons from bringing the hurt, and won the game.

We then had a 2 v 2. Necrons teaming up with me and my Dark Angels vs Team Chaos (CSM and Daemons). They had a nice collection of Daemon Princes and walkers.

They came at us full speed moving most of their army 12" or more

But knights came out of the Landraider and met them before they could get to our other units

This was when my phone died. It was a pretty close game, but the necrons and I won the game, mostly due to his flyers dumping a squad of immortals on a victory point and destroying the cultist that were hiding there.

Hopefully we can get some new faces there next time, let me know if either date works for you.

If you post in this thread at least 1 week ahead (or 2 preferably) then there's a good chance I can make it (provided I don't have something going on that day). As I'm now bookmarked in this thread, I'll see anytime it gets updated with new info.

I know two of the guys play WarmaHordes but I am not sure about Infinity. If you are able and willing I would be interested in being introduced to the game, and I am sure some of the others would be as well. We also have a guy with a fantasy army who doesn't get to play with it often, and I own the Island of Blood box, but I got it mostly to paint not to play.

Well I am new to it and trying to get into it as well, but I love the mini's and I am trying to branch out. I get why people like Warmahordes.. but I don't think it is for me. Hey man. Ork player here from up in the Valley. I got a table of scenery if you have a table for me to put it on. Id e more the happy to come on down. Ill be test running a 1500 pt list for the April tournament in Pasadena. Im a painter by trade so I got a fully, yes fully, painted ork army to very high standards. 3rd best appearance at the BAO

Post by: TheGoatMan

I would love it if you wanted to come down and join us, thats the whole point of this thing! If you are bringing the scenery in your signature that would be awesome. Do you need a gaming table to put it on or just something with legs to put a gaming table on top of? Either way your stuff would be welcomed.

Tables and space aren't a huge issue. The church has enough tables to host weddings and 200+ person dinners so we would have to get a lot of people coming before we need to worry about that. The room we are in now comfortably fits 3 tables and I think we could squeeze 5 in there if we needed to. If we ever actually needed more room than that we could always just book one of the larger rooms at the church.

Right now I have made 2 gaming tables and supposedly one of the other guys is building a lave themed table, but I don't know what the progress on that is. If my friends isn't done by then I might make another if we need it, but I doubt I will have time to make enough terrain to fill it, so its nice to know someone can bring some.

So we are less than a week away from Saturday. I hope everyone who was interested got the heads up.

So I thought I would share a piece of terrain I will have done by Saturday Night. It not 100% but its good enough to show off.

I present to you my Moonscape Hill Fort

Can't wait to play on it!

So I was thinking about maybe trying to put together a Tau army using the new codex (with my existing army) to try out tomorrow.

Is there a particular size army list I should be bringing and how are games organized? If I just show up with an army list can I get a game or do I need to plan ahead of time to make that happen?

Also, if you have extra tables but need more terrain, I can bring enough terrain to fill one table if you need it (if you don't need it, then I definitely don't want to bother packing it up and hauling it).

I guess I'll email you as well, just to make sure!

Post by: TheGoatMan

It would be awesome if you could bring Tau using the new rules. I know I wouldn't mind you using proxies for the new units and such.

Last month it was pretty informal. How games are organized is something we should most likely think about. Last month it was all people who knew each other and were comfortable just jumping into game with each other, but with people you don't already know we might need some structure to get things going. Eventually I would like to get some sort of campaign or league started, but I thought it better to get to know some more local gamers first before trying to start something like that.

MikeFox asked to play his Ork list at 1500, that might be a good point value. If you don't think you can swing that many points with the new codex I know a lot the people who came last time enjoy playing at the 1250 limit. (which is also what we like to use when doing 2 v 2s). If you let me know the size of your list you want to run I can ask some of the guys I know to make lists at the point value.

There is also the question of what kind of player are you. Are you more causal or competitive. I know I find it difficult for me to take units that I don't think will help me win when building a list, but several of my friends make lists simply because the love those units and want to see them on the battle field. If you let me know what kind of game you are looking for I can most likely find someone who would be a decent match as my group is pretty diverse in that way.

As far as terrain goes we have enough to fill two tables easily with some left over pieces. MikeFox said he was going to bring a bunch of Ork Terrain that he has which can fill a table on its own. I was thinking that three tables would be enough as I have only heard from seven (including you) people who are interested in coming. One of my friends said his Lava board would be "playable" by Saturday night, but I am not exactly sure what that means. I don't particularly want to play on a board that isn't painted... I think I am going to swing by Aero hobbies today and pick up one of those roll-up mats just in case his board isn't ready. If you have a few really nice pieces that are not to difficult to move I would say bring them. We have a lot of hills and a few ruins. we have buildings I built out of cardboard that are only primed grey. Things I wished we had more of are gun emplacements, objective markers (I have a one set), and aercotechs.

Yeah, the amount of Tau I can bring is not an issue. I've got all of this.

I think I'll probably stick to using the models I have, but just use the new Tau rules...I might proxy some Drones as some of the new type of drones, though. I'll aim for 1,500 points.

Do you guys tend to have issues with Imperial Armor rules being used? I may want to use my Forgeworld Tetras (although I may not, so as just to try out the codex as-is).

The terrain in those pics is what I've got to bring...its modular foam squares to make the table and such. As long as we've got enough table space to set it up on, then we're all good. If I have the time I'll pack it up and bring it, but it sounds like if I don't do that we'll probably be okay anyway (which is good).

As for what type of player I am, I tend to play almost exclusively in tournaments at this point in my life, but I enjoy all types of games even if I'm getting my butt kicked. I'll be trying to make the most wicked army configuration I can think of with the new Tau and my existing models, but I'm not going to be bringing allies or fortifications so there's a high probability that my force won't be all that deadly. With that said, if someone wants to bring triple Heldrakes against me, I'll just suck it up and take it like a man.

Post by: TheGoatMan

Your army looks really great. I normally don't care for the look of the Tau army but the green is a nice change.

I have no issue with Imperial Armor stuff as long as you can provide the rules for the model (I would like to be able to read them in some form). I can't speak for the rest of the guys, but I doubt it would be a huge issue.

Now that I think of it, if you have forest or craters that would be cool as well. Right now we have one of the GW craters set, but they are all painted and flocked for the grass board. I am planning on picking up another set to use for the moonscape board but I won't have time before tomorrow to get it painted

I would like the evening to end before 1:00am. I work on Sunday Mornings and need some sleep. If you showed up at 9:00 you would certainly have time for a game.

I am also considering setting up a side table for Kill Team. I played it the other day and it took like 45 minutes, which could be an option for people to do if we don't have time for another full game.

Right now its just 40k. I know one guy has a fantasy army, but it likely to late to get him to bring it. I looked over the rules for infinity and would be willing to give it a shoot if someone who knew how to play was willing to hold my hand through a game,

I have been telling people 1500 for 1 v 1, 1000-1250 for 2 v 2, but honestly if you had a particular point value you wanted to play at I am sure someone who accommodate.

I would also advise everyone to either plan of getting food for themselves or bringing cash to order something. There are lots of places to eat which are less that 5 minutes away and I would be happy to give directions. Last time we ordered Pizza and I would imagine we will do something similar tomorrow.

I will provide water and soda for the group, but if you are particular about what you like to drink I suggest you bring something you like.

I got the feel from the other players that earlier on Saturdays in Westchester would be better than Saturday evenings in Manhattan Beach, so keep a look out for an update on that (I will be aiming for May 5th but you never know when the rooms will be available).

Hey everyone, so I am planning on doing the next meeting on the 11th of May. I think it is going to have to be in Manhattan Beach again this time, I am still trying to work things out with the place in Weschester, but I am not sure I can get the larger room there for free.

Sorry I have gone silent over the last two weeks or so, life took over for a little bit, then Hordes took over!

Speaking of Warmahordes I just started a Trollblood army and my friend has been showing me the ropes. I will have a tiny army (I think I could play like 20 points) but my friend has a much larger force. Anyone who wants to bring their WarmaHordes we are down to play.

It sounds like we might have a few more people showing up this time which is great, but it might mean we need someone to bring a table and terrain as I only have 2 tables and a mat (Yakface maybe you would be willing to bring your stuff?),

I am wondering if we should set a point value for 40k as well as trying to organize some matches? Last time we sorta just played it by ear, which worked out ok, but I don't want anyone to show up and not be able to play cause that would suck. Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to go about this?

When I contact the on Monday to book the room I will ask if we can use their BBQ and we can have burgers and hotdogs. Its been really nice outside so maybe we can try to pull off a inside out side thing? There were request to start earlier, so I was going to aim to start at 1:00 and go till around 9:00.

I will post the finalized details here in the thread on Monday.

Manhattan Beach is fine with me... evening is fine with me. Starting mid-afternoon and going until midnight or so is fine. Whatever, I am flexible.

I also have a green grassy mat I would be glad to bring down. I have a couple terrain pieces I could bring as well.

As far as number of people... yeah I think we may have a full house this time around, but I wouldn't worry. Hanging out and talking shop while watching games is fun, too. It's a nice way for all of us to spend a weekend away from work and the wives, I think.

I've invited 2 or 3 guys, but not sure if they will show or not. I think at least one of them will.

I'm fine with just showing up with an army and getting pickup games in... or organizing matches is fine, too. As I mentioned, I like to play all painted. I sure would enjoy a 2,000 point game with my Chaos army this time around.

Thanks for setting things up, Matt.

So I put in the request to for a room on May 11th. Another group will be using the room till 12:30, so I requested it starting at 1:30pm, which will give me an hour to set things up. It is once again at Manhattan Beach Community Church and I will ask people to not start new 40k games after 8:30, but I will not kick anyone out mid game as thats the worse.

I still need to negotiate BBQ use so assume that you will have to provide food for yourselves unless I saw otherwise (I will provide refreshments in the form of Soda and water).

I would like to have an idea of how many people are planning to show up, so if you plan on coming please either post in this thread or email me.

Firstly, what is your guys' stance on proxying models? I'm working on collecting/building my full list but neither of them are done yet without some serious proxying (I mean like cardboard bases with no models on them at times.) I would hopefully be much closer to finished by May but I just want to know just in case.

Secondly, I have a box of terrain; would it be superfluous to bring or is terrain a "the more the merrier" kind of thing?

Los Angeles (Westside - Manhattan Beach) Gaming Group @ 2013/04/25 07:28:36

Post by: TheGoatMan

Each gamer has his own preference when it comes to proxying so I won't speak for other players. Some people might not want to play with you because of this, but I know for a fact there are gamers coming that will have no issue with even extreme proxies (they might ask you to put something on the cardboard bases just so you remember something is there when scanning the board.

The venue is meant to welcome all gamers so there is room for someone still building their army. I know I don't have everything in my army and use plenty of non-GW models for things.

If I were going to play you I would ask if we could try and use some extra models from other players to stand in for things. I have two armies so I would most likely ask you to use some of my other army models as proxies over empty cardboard bases. If you are a Necron player as your avatar suggest you are welcome to use some of my Necrons if you are respectful with them. My army is have painted but its better than empty bases.

I would say as long as your terrain isn't a huge hassle to transport bring it. It is pretty hard to get a solid idea of how many people are going to show up, and its always better to have too much terrain than not having enough to fill a table

Man, I am psyched for the 11th! I'll be there for sure, but probably later on - like 3:00 or 4:00 as I've got to work until mid-afternoon. I've invited two other cool guys with painted armies, but still waiting on confirmation.

Anyone up for a big-ass game? I have a ton of new Chaos stuff that I want to try out. 2,000 - 2,500 non-competitive would be awesome! All painted. Single force org, double force org, no force org, whatever! I just want to play a big game.

I'll be there from start until around 7 - to get in as much action as I can - have to bail then to make it to league soccer. Unfortunately, I don't have any terrain or boards to offer. Maybe in the future.

At this point in my life, I have no desire to ever play a game of 40k against faux-models.

I can barely handle playing against unpainted models, to tell you the truth...however I can stand that so long as the player is actually getting stuff painted from one session to the next and not just perpetually putting unpainted stuff out there.

I typically won't ever even proxy stuff...I just suck it up and play with whatever models I do have.

Although not to sound hypocritical, I do make an exception for proxy models for a while after a new codex comes out if people are looking to test out what new units they want to run (I'm doing that right now with my Tau), but again, so long as the player is showing that they're currently working on actually getting those models bought and painted from session to session.

But that's just me. There are always going to be those with less (or more) stringent requirements to play.

Well for what I gathered last meeting you have been playing for well over a decade, it is a lot easier for veterans to field good armies with out any proxies at all.

I tired playing WYSISYG the other day with my DA and it was awful. not being able to run melta guns (because plasma guns came in DV and I haven't invested in a third tactical squad yet) is lame. And all the plasma pistols the DA leaders come modeled with are just a point drain.

I agree with you that if the player is showing no signs of progress on his or her army it can be frustrating, that being said I think there needs to be more tolerance towards those of us who are really are trying to expand our forces and paint them up (I got my LRC painted to a table top standard from last time we played and the Librarian on the bike painted). We to want to try new things in our list and have variety too and it is disheartening to hear people not want to play with me solely because I haven't had 5 years to finish building and painting my army.

I feel the same as Yakface regarding proxies. And I really appreciate WYSIWYG, but understand the difficulties it presents.

I also strongly prefer to play painted forces, but players who are working on their forces are an exception.

Good opponents is priority 1, but I feel that painted forces sans proxies is a part of that (albeit second to personality and quality of the player).

Excited to game with you gents!

Hey Goatman

I just wanted to point out to you that within the past 7 years, I've painted four 40k armies and one Fantasy army. All while working full time (often way more than full-time). At the very very most I'll get in 8 hours of painting a week, but it's usually more like 3 or 4 while I watch TV. Sometimes it's not even that. I'll sometimes go 2 months without even touching a brush. Then again sometimes I'll make a huge push to get stuff done in the week before a tournament or something. It varies.

It takes me about 2 years to "finish" an army once I start, and even then I am usually working on two or three armies at a time. It doesn't take anything like 5 years to get an army done if you are being even semi-diligent.

Thokt, how long did it take you to finish 1500 points of Crons? Like 3 or 4 months? Granted, that was pretty darn fast, but still...

It can definitely be be done.

Having said that, I totally understand what you are saying. I know plenty of people who absolutely hate painting and are really more interested in the gaming side of the hobby (Sergio is like this). They're cool with playing with a table full of gray plastic models. And that's totally fine.

But, for me, not only do I put in the blood sweat and tears to paint my models, but I am in the hobby primarily for the pageantry and aesthetics. It's hard for me to get excited facing off against a sea of gray plastic. As Yakface said, I'm just sort of at a point in my life where I'd rather not if possible.

I don't mind the odd minor proxy - that flamer is really a melta gun, that power fist is really a lightning claw, etc. No big deal. But if you want to use cardboard cutouts and call a Necron Lord a Space Wolf Rune Priest or something like that, I just wouldn't enjoy playing against that.

But don't worry, dude. Trudge along, make a good faith effort to get your stuff painted, and try to field as much painted as you can every game, and I'd be glad to play you from time to time. I don't think you need to worry too much. Also, I would be more than happy to teach you techniques to getting armies done quickly if you're interested. You'd be surprised how quickly you can knock stuff out.

And it also seems like there are a couple people in the group who don't mind playing unpainted, so there shouldn't be any shortage of opponents for unpainted players.

To sum up - it's all good and I think everyone will be happy.

Xeno - I believe I began painting my Tron Crons in mid January and finished at the end of March.

I'm a big proponent of painting in front of the TV - it gets the job done. I spent my first two weeks painting at my work bench in my garage and finished one Ghost Ark. I transfered my paint station to my living room and began making real progress, as well as enjoying painting more. And now I have a fully painted force!

I think we'll have a great time come May 11th!

I honestly don't think I am working at a super slow pace. In the 8 months I have been collecting DA I have painted 2 tac squads, 1 dev squad, 3 bikes, 1 lib, 1 lib on a bike, 1 commander, 1 Chaplin, 1 squad of termies, 1 squad of knights, a LRC, a dreadnought, and a rhino. I have also built 2 tables and a bunch of terrain. I prefer to paint with music on, I find painting relaxing and centering and try to make time for it several times a week. Honestly I wouldn't want to turn my painting time into something that was forced or rushed. To me its not something to "get through" but something to enjoy.

As I said I understand wanting to enjoy the awesomeness of playing with fully painted armies, which is why I am working hard to get as much done as I can. I also wasn't suggesting it should take 5 years to paint an army, just that most veterans have had a lot more time to get it done.

Also I imagine that while you were working on army 3 and 4 you were able to play with armies 1 and 2, which gave you variety in the games you played. Right now if I don't want to run the same list over and over I have to play with unpainted models. I also imagine that army 1 took you the longest to paint as you got better and faster at painting over the years.

I worry that if the people who have the best knowledge of the game and coolest looking armies are unwilling to play with new players, many new players will get discouraged from putting in the time and effort to finish armies.

That being said Yakface was very nice, friendly, and good spirited in our game last month, despite my half painted force. It doesn't seem like the other folks I meet were unwilling to welcome new players either so I doubt this will be a problem.

I don't care how slow someone is, as long as they're making progress each session, personally.

Lord knows, I am about the slowest painter in the world when I'm trying to paint at my best level, so I empathize.

Although on the flip-side when I do promise myself I won't field something until it is painted, that sure pushes me to keep working to get it done.

@ Goatman - I think everything will work out! We seem to be collecting a good mix of players, and I am sure everyone will be fine.

@ Yakface - right? This more than anything is one of my biggest motivations to paint. When you commit to painted only, you make it happen. I want to field a Vindicator and / or a Land Raider for my CSM on May 11, so I am going to hustle to finish them. Right now they're primed red!

@ Goatman - I can build essentially 3 tables worth of terrain from what I have (using those modular foam tiles). So just let me know how many tables worth of terrain you need me to bring.

Well I want to say we are going to need four to five table on the 11th. There have been several "I might make it" responses so if half of those show up I think we will be end up having around 10-12 people.

If you just bring what you brought last time that will put us up to 3 tables and a mat. It looked like last time you brought more terrain that what was needed for a single table, so maybe we could use that for the mat?

I could also try and get some more work done on some hills I have made but not painted before the 11th which would make the mat less pathetic.

So I am trying to feel out how many folks we might have.

People who I think said they were coming:
Yakface
Thokt
Xeno
TheGoatMan
3 of Goatman's friends

People who might be coming:
2 friends of Xeno (does this include Sergio?)
3 friends of TheGoatMan
SupremeDalek
Noctem
LEMMY77

So thats 7 who for sure will be there and maybe as many as 15. Let me know if I left anyone off the list or if you availability changes.

Sorry I've been so bad at replying to PM's! Sometimes I'll go by and forget to log in if I'm just skimming threads!

I'm still not 100% sure I will make it on the 11th but will try my best. I have my Necron army finished finally (built, not painted yet) and currently building my Tau army. Used to play Tau in 3rd and this recent update drew me back to them heh

So the event is just a week a way, just wanted to make sure all interested parties catch the thread.

I am also just going to go a head and suggest people bring a 1500 point list as a all comers level. I think most folks can run this many points but its not too few to get to run some interesting things. If you don't have a specific player and or point limit you want to play build a list for 1500 and hopefully you can find someone to play with there.

Throk I am down to play, although if I can squeeze in a game of warmahordes with frenrik before he has to leave I might want to do that, so if someone else wants to play you no worries.

Xeno I was planning on asking people to stop starting new games at like 9:00, that way we should be done before 12:00. I have to be at work on Sunday at 8:00 so I don't really want to stay out too late.

Hey Bloodfist, I responded to your email. Right now the only limiting factor for how many people are welcome is gaming tables, so if you can bring one your more then welcome to join us.

Also if anyone else wants to come but can't bring anything don't worry, show up and we will figure things out. I know that I don't mind playing 2 v 2s or even the occasional 3 v 3. I know thats not everyone's cup of tea, but one way or another we will find a way to make it work.

Post by: yakface

I've got a ton of completely unpainted stuff and a box of the old Epic buildings.

Epic Armageddon is one of my favorite rulesets of all time, but I don't have anything close to an assembled (let alone painted) force to play with.

The bummer of Epic to me has always been that many of the factions have no models at all or if they exist they are old versions based on like 2nd or 3rd edition design concepts.

The new versions that were put out were just for such a limited cross-section (IG, SM, Eldar and Orks)...so model-wise you're really only looking at a 4 faction game, which is a bummer since all know and love so many of the other races in the 40K universe.

Yeah, people have made rules for Necrons, Tau, CSM, Tyranids, etc, but you either have to scratch build your models or try to find ancient models on Ebay that don't match the current 40K design aesthetic at all anymore.

Los Angeles (Westside - Manhattan Beach) Gaming Group @ 2013/05/17 01:35:42

Post by: Xenocidal Maniac

Well, awesome! I agree, the Epic Armageddon rules are excellent. It's very much more of a war simulation than the comic book that 40k is.

I'd be fine with playing against your unpainted stuff to start. The wonderful thing about Epic is that it paints up so easily. I've only got about 1750 points or so painted, but I have the feeling I could have that up to 3,000 points inside of 2 weeks or so.

I agree about the lack of factions in Epic, but, I guess it's what we've got to work with. I have two friends who have an Ork and an IG force, and I run Marines, so we do have some variety. I played against a guy with a large Tyranid force once, and those models were fine.

I'm up for a game on the 8th if you are!

What unpainted stuff do you have?

The next time we are meeting is officially June 1st at Manhattan Beach Community Church, we will be meeting in a different room than last time (its a little larger and has a lot better light) but its right across from the room we were in before.

The night will begin at 4:00 pm (that is the soonest we could book it) and the night will end around 1:00. We need to set up for an event on Sunday morning afterwards so if anyone is willing to stick around and help clean up that would be greatly appreciated. It sounds like we will have fewer folks this time around, so we might not need as many tables.

I know its short notice but please try and let me know if you are coming so we can try to insure everyone has a place to play.

Thanks everyone and I hope to see you next Saturday!

The address for the Church is 303 S. Peck Ave. Manhattan Beach CA 90266. The room is in the back of the church (by the back parking lot) on the north side. We will be the only folks there that night so if you poke around you should hear us.

We have yet to see any fantasy actually played. I have heard folks have armies but I doubt they will just bring them. As long as you are cool to follow some pretty basic rules all folks are welcome, and I don't see why we wouldn't. In fact my wife starts Law school in August and if everything people are saying is true I will not be seeing much of her, which means I will have some time to fill.

Like I said in the past the only thing that could really keep us from always welcoming new folks is gaming tables. And even then we might just have to get creative with time. I don't claim to speak for everyone, but I personally would rather only get one game in and just hang out then turn people away.

Also I just want to throw out a thank you to all the folks who stuck around and helped clean up. I got to bed at a reasonable hour and wasn't super tired for work the next day!

Sadly Xeno I forgot to take pictures of my pretty epic battle. It was my DA vs Space Wolves (my first time playing them). There were a lot of drop pods on the table by the end of the match and it was pretty close, but I ultimately lost. Real fun game though, part of the reason I forgot to take pictures was we were just having to much fun to remember to pause and take pictures. Maybe bloodfist took some from one of his games?

Hi everyone. I hope people have been having a good Summer. It has been a while since we had a meet up just because of holidays and such.

I finally got the go ahead from the church for the 20th of July from 1:00 till midnight. I am in a bit of a losing streak so I am looking forward to getting a couple games in.

Please let me know if you are interested in coming. Its at the same place it was last time (lets hope we don't have another power outage and have to play by cell phone light)

Good job TheGoatMan, we need more war gamers like you.

Toocool61, yes people play 2000 points. A lot of the people who have come in the past have several large armies. Not everyone who comes will be able to field 2000, but many will.

I am always down to help a new gamer out. I am pretty decent at giving solid advice without being too controlling. I don't really know the space wolf army very well, but I can read over the codex night before.

Look forward to checking out your finished table, sounded like you were headed in a good direction last game night.

Looks like I'll be able to make it this weekend (yay).

But I'm wondering if I can sucker...I mean, convince/bribe/cajole/pressure anyone into helping me out by playtesting some rules I'm working on for a miniatures game?

I will gladly by anyone lunch/dinner who is willing to help me out.

Basically, I will bring the minis for you to use (just some random 40K models), and preferably I could find two people to play while I explain the rules and get a feeling for what you like or hate about the game.

In a pinch, I can play against someone else if only one person is willing to help out, but it would be much more usefful for me to watch two complete newbies play against each other.

I'll certainly take whatever time you guys can spare, so if you want to play another game of something first and then are able to give me an hour or two after (or before), that totally works for me.

So anyone willing to help me out?

I am down to meet more often, however I am not down to host more than once a month. If we want to meet up somewhere else I will bring my tables and terrain, but I don't really want to be in charge of organizing it.

That being said I am down to organize some sort of league play or campaign if people are interested.

Seems pretty reasonable Goat! I don't have a hosting hookup or boards or terrain for that matter, so I'm really a leech here - but I think it would be fantastic if the group was meeting up twice a month in two different spots.

Yes, that's what I had in mind as I stated in my original post - perhaps we can find another venue... any ideas?

My place is too small to fit ten dudes... Aero Hobbies is crummy... I guess Game Empire could work, but it's pretty far for a lot of us.

Any other ideas? Anyone else work at a church?

I agree! twice a month would be ideal, and a different venue wouldn't be bad, my place is a two table max size .. so not really practical for a big group, i'm looking into a spot near my house (culver city / marina del rey area) but not sure on the details of it yet. still waiting for a response atm. that being said its a possible space, but thats it. we would need to somehow get tables for the game boards to set up on. so that may be a bottle neck.

I have a board and terrain I can haul over, no problem.

So you have room for two tables at your place? That could actually work out. I mean, I don't know how you feel about volunteering up your home, but some of my fondest memories are of gaming in my buddy's two bedroom apartment with a bunch of people about two or three years ago. Four people game, and whoever else is there just chills. I'm thinking it would probably be best not to exceed 6 people or so, though.

Alternately, I might be able to get us some space at an Alano Club on Pico near Sawtelle, but we might have to pay $5 or so per head to use it. It's an option I can explore if anyone is interested.

Los Angeles (Westside - Manhattan Beach) Gaming Group @ 2013/07/26 17:48:58

Post by: TheGoatMan

So just a heads up. I put in a request to use the room again. our first priority date is the 17th and there is a good chance we won't be able to get it as the next Sunday is the new ministers first day and they might want to throw him some welcoming party in the hall. So if not the 17th then the 24th or the 10th. I know the 10th doesn't give folks too much planning time, but if that's what we can get then its what we can get.

I will let everyone know what the actual date is on Tuesday after the approve it.

I was thinking maybe we could get 3 imperial armies and 3 Xeno armies and fight over a solar systems, and have the final battle be a huge 3 v 3 battle. Have each Xeno army play against each imperial player and the side who wins the most matches each month gets to develop the plot further. That would result in 3 matches per player before the final battle and 3 "plot points" before the conclusion. We could even make it that the plot pointed effect the final battle some way. Like if there someone wanted there to be some alien artifact we were all looking for it could be one the battle field and do something.

I don't know if I will be the easist victroty Thokt, when I was playing Necrons I always had the most difficult time with space marines. Lots of 3+ armor saves and almost no AP 3 weapons. Although I am pretty sure your list would be pretty good against my Land Raider and you have mass guass glancing insanity.

Hope to see everyone there. I have been working hard on a bunch of special and heavy weapon guys so I don't have to pull the "that plasma is a melta and that lascannon is a ML" stuff any more.

Well depending on traffic we are anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes away from Santa Monica. I am not 100% sure as I haven't lived over there for awhile but I think you should be fine on a Saturday afternoon. If you are in your 20s/30s and are looking for guys of similar ages who play both causally and competitively then I honestly think we might be your best option.

The closet game store to you is Aero Hobbies which is on Santa Monica Blvd. They have a decent selection of stuff, nice people, but a lot of people find the store to be dirty, cramped, and difficult to play in.

Your other options are all significantly further. There is a games workshop in San Pedro which would take you about an hour to get to, what used to be the LA Battle bunker is in Westminster, depending on the 405 could be 35 minutes to and hour and a half. I honestly don't know much about the communities there any more.

A store opened in Lakewood called the Bunker which would take you anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and half to get to. They seem to still be getting off the ground, heard they have canceled and changed stuff last minute a few times. Might be worth trying to get in with the forming community there.

Hey SMMJosh! I am looking forward to playing Epic and 40k with you!!

You're living near the pier? That's a very nice area! I live quite close to the Santa Monica Pier. You just take Santa Monica Blvd east for about four miles or so and there I am! Be sure to PM me as well.

As Goatman mentioned, Aero Hobbies is in Santa Monica, and I am actually the founder of the gaming club and mailing list down there, but I rarely stop by anymore for the reasons that Goatman mentioned.

As far as the gaming group, that's a short hop down the 405 on Saturdays. It only takes me about 20 minutes. I'd be happy to give you a ride!

Post by: TheGoatMan

@SMMSjosh14 If you don't mind email me GameNightPlayers@gmail.com, I honestly don't check my PMs that often.

I would say we normally play between 1500-2000 games. Seems like most people can do bigger games if you wanted. When we do 2 v 2s I we run somewhere between 1000-1500. If there is anything in particular you wanted.

I would say bring your partially painted army, few things motivate a painter like seeing other fully painted armies in action. As long as you are working on it most folks are happy to play with a partly done army, I know I am still working hard on mine. I know a lot of us don't even mind the use of proxies.

Not to toot our own horn or anything but I think we have a really solid mix of players. At this point I think any type of gamer from super fluffy to ultra competitive to friendly casual who has a good attitude will find someone they like to game with.

Cause I have enough terrain to fill 3 tables if we have the table space to put them on.

So the I will call the church tomorrow to find out when the next available Saturday is. I can tell you for sure it won't be the the 7th as I preach on the 8th and can't stay out late the night before. So I would expect either the 14th or the 21st.

I think it would be cool if those of us who are able to bring a pot luck dish would, although this should be done out of the kindness of one's heart and not be seen as an obligation. I know it can be a lot of work just getting models and tables packed up and brought, I don't want to add unwanted work for folks. After all this is supposed to be fun and relaxing.

I think it would also be real cool if anyone who has a decent camera and likes to take pictures might be willing to take pictures to post in the thread. I always tell myself I am going to remember to take pictures and I always forget. I think it might be helpful to people who might be on the fence about coming to a group full of strangers to see that we are all pretty cool guys having a good time and not creepy internet serial killers looking for our next victims.

So it looks like September is a pretty busy month at the church (most mainline protestants have their kick off Sunday in September in order to try bring people back from summer) so I couldn't get a Saturday until the 28th. This is not set in stone as the guy who officially clears everything is in China on vacation for the next two weeks, so we will have to wait till he gets back to get on the calender thus guaranteeing we can use the space. I will update the thread when I know.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the late information but I just got the final confirmation that we do in fact have the space for the 28th. We can start playing at 1:00 and end around midnight. As always I will provide drinks, if you want to pitch in I recommend bringing some snacks to share with everyone.

So I just got an email from the church. Looks like we can't start until 2:00 and we have been moved to the Community Hall which is just a room over from the room we played in the last few times. Sorry for the last minute information. I am sort of the low man on the totem pole when it comes to get space there, but I really can't complain too much. Hope this doesn't inconvenience anyone.

So I want to try out the new space marine codex this Saturday but I am missing a lot of stuff. I have appropriate proxies for a lot of it but I am wondering if anyone has an extra drop pod and thunderfire cannon model they would let me use?

Also I would be interested in hearing some of your guys thoughts on the codex and what units I should be looking at. I already picked up a box of sternguard and love the kit, if it were $10 less I would grab another one just to get a second heavy flamer and all the awesome bits it comes with. I am also strongly considering getting 5 LotD units as ignores cover plasma weapons are awesome. My only reservations are that they models are finecast and I have heard mixed things about the quality.

I own like 30+ space marine bikes in various stages of completion (picked up most of them second hand and have not had the time to show them all the TLC they need) so I think I could run a decent white scars type army. I think 5 man groups with 2 grav guns look pretty good and plan on trying that out once I get more bikes built.

I honestly have not really seen the space marine flyer models in person and would be really grateful to anyone who could bring any on Saturday for me to look at. The rules for them look decent but I would seriously think about proxying in anther flyer model as a count as. Some times I look at them and they look cool, other times I am not so certain, and you never really know till you see a decently painted one in person.

I don't know another venue per se, but I'd be down for getting the group together at Game Empire or the Bunker. Not as good, but a reasonable alternative for a great group, perhaps?

I'd love to get in on it. Put me down for showing up. I don't know if there is anything else I can think of. American Martyrs might be willing to give us an upstairs room in their hall like once a week on saturdays or something. I can talk to them and see.

Oh! Sorry, I didn't know the place in Lakewood was called the Bunker. No, as far as I know, that is still open.

Yeah, that could work for me. It's probably about the same distance as Game Empire for me, and probably easier to get to... I love Game Empire, but Pasadena is never easy to get to.

Shall we make plans for a meetup? Say maybe Saturday 11/9?

Hey Everyone,

The church hall is free and I get the final ok on monday for the 23rd.

I think it would be awesome if qballony could look into using space at Martyrs for future dates if we can't get the hall at MBCC. Connor and I actually plan on going to the LA Bunker this Saturday to check it out. I went there right when it opened and they seemed to still have a lot of stuff packed up. Hoping that its more "finished" in there as it might be a good option for met ups. I will try and get there on the 9th to to meet up with some of you folks.

Zynk and qballony do you guys live in the south bay? If you ever are looking for a quick game some night we have a group of around five guys who play and we are always looking for more people. Maybe if you meet us at one of the game nights and we don't freak you out you can come and play some with us?

I'm so pumped for next weekend! Both painted armies will be ready to rock, and my Iyanden will be in a new case so as to avoid my current case shenanigans. The Iyanden build is a bit fluffy (especially compared to how mean Necrons can be) - so bring some fluffy or semi-fluffy builds folks! Or not, Wraithguard are fearless!

Thanks bloodfist, not to be an ass but I kind of just want to see the models I have been working on in action, maybe once the new Codex drops I will take you up on that offer to fill in my roster.

With bloodfist's table we will have 3 tables + the mat. If anyone else can bring a table or terrain please do. Part of me is thinking of backing this: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/554355176/games-and-gears-battle-boards?ref=category For $100 you get a decent looking 6x4 table.

Anyone know what Yakface is up to and why he hasn't come by in a while? I know he was trying to get the game of his off the ground, maybe hes just been consumed by work?

Manhattan Beach Community Church. 303 S. Peck Ave. Manhattan Beach CA 90266. its best to come in from Rowel though and park in the back parking lot as its the closest to the hall we play in. We start at 1:00 and I would say getting there in the first hour is recommended otherwise you might show up to find a bunch of people already in a game.

I'm still checking this thread every now and then!

I had about 3 months of an insane work schedule, and then my father passed away last month so that was all kind of a perfect storm of craziness. But on top of that, I've come to the realization that after 20+ years of playing 40K, GW has finally figured out the line to cross to make me no longer interested in playing anymore, and that is to release $40 supplements nearly every month that only have 2 pages of rules in them. As someone who really loves to own and digest every morsel of 40k rules, now that they're making me pay $40 a month (minimum) to keep this 'habit' up, I finally feel like I'm just being milked for money and that has soured my feelings about the game tremendously.

Now, I'm not going to go and sell all my armies or anything crazy like that, as I know that new editions eventually roll around and (hopefully) mix things up in a positive way. But for the time being, I don't have much desire to bust the models out and play.

I definitely won't be making this weekend, but if I get the urge to play or just watch a game of epic or something I'll try to make it sometime to a future weekend.

Los Angeles (Westside - Manhattan Beach) Gaming Group @ 2013/11/19 17:56:48

Post by: Xenocidal Maniac

Yakface, I completely relate to you on both counts.

My dad passed away about three months ago. It's just the worst. I don't know exactly what I was expecting, but it was so much harder than I imagined. Hang in there. It does get better.

GW has also priced me out after 20+ years. I feel like 6th edition is a mangled clusterf*** of a game and combined with the prices, I just can't muster a whole lot of enthusiasm for 40k.

Hopefully we will see you again soon, though! I am making a real push to get Epic and Warmaster going around here. We already have a good group of guys playing regularly. Epic especially has a ton of fan support and great proxy models are easily available. The rules now are in the hands of the fans, and while they do evolve, no one will ever force you to pay to keep up with them! All freely available on the internet.

Take care! Hope to see you soon.

Sorry to hear your loss, Yak. Can't imagine how tough it is.

When you do come back around to 40k, I'm still jonesing to fight ya. Until then, perhaps think about Warmaster - Xeno's formed a group, and if you're not familiar with the game, I'm sure you'll be quite pleased with the ruleset.

Take it easy, man. We'll be glad to have you back when you can make it out.

I know it's a trip for half the group or so, but it's well worth it (and Manhattan Beach is a trip for me)! The gaming environment is great, there's a ton of room at the new location, and a pretty neat selection of terrain. Also, the nerd-haunt factor is pretty low.

Thoughts?

If we're voting here, we need an option to vote against (that's how elections work right?) - how about "You Lose Gaming Group"? Let's get some names to vote for (or against) and Goat can throw up a thread poll.

I'm cool with pushing back the time if we don't have any AM folks, but I'll wait to get a general consensus.

I think we should keep westside in the name, even if we start meeting at Game Empire sometimes. Because the westside has had such a dearth of miniature gaming location options over the years that I think it is important to make it easy for new people to find the group and know that something exists in the westside that is available to those looking to game in the area.

Ha, honestly, I was just kidding about the name, but I guess it's sparked some interesting discussion.

I've had Westside Wargamers reserved on Facebook and Yahoo Groups for a while now, if we wanted to use that.

Or we could go with Westside Table Flippers.

I started up the Aero gaming group many moons ago. It now has 200+ members. I don't have something like that in me again, though.

Or maybe we just keep it informal?

Hey guys my schedule is wild lately and I've missed both meetings but I would also be in to meet at a second location. Where exactly is gaming empires? It says San Diego on the google options.. I'm hoping that's not the one we are referring to? In any case count another head for upcoming games.

Also if there is anyone here who is interested in setting up a regular game as well I would be more than happy to play. It's usually hard with my schedule to make Saturdays work so if anyone isn't busy shoot me a PM sometime! Xenocidal maniac and I had an awesome gme a while back! Looking to play again soon.

I am down to do a little more work organizing stuff. Like I would be willing to start a email list and sent out email invites to stuff. Xeno maybe you would be willing to give me some pointers on building the community?

I agree with Yakface that even if we are not meeting only in the Westside that there is a need in that area for gamers to meet up and no natural location for them to do so (this is the whole reason I started this thread), and thus we should keep it in the thread and what not, but it could be like "the table flippers: a Westside gaming group" or something like that.

When I reserve the room at the church the organization name I have been using is "the game night players" but that was just something I made up on the spot when they asked me for a name. If we get a few suggestions I will make a poll or something.

Also I am down for the 7th, also some friends and I will be at empire tomorrow during the afternoon if any other folks have time off for Thanksgiving and want to play we will find room for you.

Hey all! I'm glad to see the meet ups have been going well. I've been busy with other things in life for a while now, but have finally finished building my two armies...

Game Empire is very close to me, I live in Los Feliz (next to Glendale) and would definitely be willing to meet up there.

Maybe we should make a Facebook group, for ease of communication!

I say we call it: "Better than Toronto: Westside Table Flippers LA.

It's time we gave those Canadians the what for, as well as franchise out our club, for global domination.

How late will you guys be there on the 7th? I have work Saturdays and wouldn't make it over until 5 or 6. If anyone is still there for a while after that, I'll show up! Also, love the idea of a facebook group.

Emails work fine for me, was just bringing up Facebook since I know most people have one and I tend to communicate on that a lot more nowadays than email. Of course, if not everyone is down for that, email it is!

Can I ask what the aversion to Facebook is? I don't have any objection, just curious. Is it that you don't like all of your nerdy activities being broadcast to all of your "friends"?

If that is the case, there is the option of making a secret group. It would be invite-only, but it would prevent all of your likes and comments from being broadcast to everyone.

The group that I founded, Aero Boyz, was (and still is) on a mailing list. It works quite well, but some people don't know how to have e-mails automatically routed to a separate folder, so they get tired of having their primary inbox spammed and eventually unsubscribe or turn e-mails off. At peak times over the years, there have been as many as 500 e-mails per month. Average is about 100 - 150, however.

Personally, I would prefer FB. The mailing list I started has worked just fine for a number of years, though, so I would be fine either way.

I'll say that if you guys want a formal group, and you want to recruit new members and stuff like that, it's a pretty big task that you need to be committed to and focused on. One person will have to step up and grab the bull by the horns - create the FB page and / or mailing list, promote the group, organize events, etc etc. It's a lot of work.

Or, if you just want to keep it small-scale and casual, that's not as much work. But someone will have to step up to create the mailing list and get the basic infrastructure going. It's not going to just happen by itself.

And I am not going to do it

Spot on regarding nerd broadcasting, Xeno.

That's what I figured. In that case, the options are secret FB group or mailing list. I am on a secret FB group for a work-related thing, and it works really well. I think it's perfectly viable for our group. And, frankly, I think the fact that secret FB groups are invite only is a good thing. It will allow us a certain amount of exclusivity.

Either way is totally cool with me. I personally think mailing lists are sort of going obsolete, but, whichever works for me.

You're probably right, the mailing lists I've endured for work are tedious, despite the folder re-route. FB may be the best bet. Are you going to GE on Saturday?

My bad I changed it to the 7th, my mind was else where. Had to fire my first person ever :(

In happier news I am almost finished with my Hive Tyrant and have assembled 3 warriors and almost done with 8 hormaguants.

I am down to run the Facebook page. Didn't one of you say you had some group name reserved?

Secret Facebook page.

That's something else I'll have to pay attention to (since I barely check Facebook anymore because I don't really care too much for it).

I hope this thread doesn't dry up as a result of a Facebook page, as this is obviously much better at attracting new players than a Facebook page (which is naturally closed), but if we're not talking in this thread then people aren't going to find the thread as easily, etc.

I also am not a fan of Facbook. But, unfortunately, it has become a platform that most people are on and it does facilitate communication pretty seamlessly.

I think the difference between communicating here and communicating on FB is that I am pretty much constantly logged into FB, whereas I am only here when I think to log on. To be honest, with my lack of enthusiasm for GW and 40k lately, I'm really only logging on to check this thread most of the time.

I think your situation is reversed, obviously, because you are the owner of this site.

But, I do completely agree that we should keep some level of conversation going here in order to publicize the group and attract new players.

Dakka, Facebook, mailing list. Whatever. I personally don't care. There are pros and cons to each.

I will be in Glendale that day and I was hoping to find a game in that area. I will be there with my Hive Fleet around 10:30. I have played at the GE in San Diego before so it will be fun to have roots in both places. I am also not a total foreigner. I went to MCHS back in the late 90's.

BTW anyone possibly interested in a game Friday afternoon or evening. My business trip will be done by the morning and trying to see how much game I can get in before I have to go back to the family.

^^ to both of the above posters.

I am avaliable all next week after finals end..and this weekend as well. Maybe we can set up a game through PM's or something of the sort. I don't mind proxying stuff for casual gaming and I'm also up for competitive. Whatever floats you boat.

I would say most folks armies are still works in progress. In general most folks seem fine with fielding unpainted models and minor proxies are fine. I wouldn't want to play against a bunch of empty bases or cardboard cut outs but "this guy with a plasma is really a gravgun" is fine by me.

That being said some folks have really nice armies that are fully painted. I would make an attempt to paint and get your army in decent shape. Few will say no to playing a game with you, but I think it is polite to try and field a good looking army. As long as you are working on it no ones going to say anything. If you are bring a new grey army every month then you might find some resistance among us.
