Camo Space Marines , A bit of Nurgle and Now with added Rat stink ! WIP @ 2013/04/16 23:51:23

Post by: Big H

Hello , decided to start a WIP plog for my camo Space Marine Chapter ( Storm Eagles or Storm Wolves depending if you ask me or my son ) as I've got quite a bit going on at the minute.

First up , an eBay pre built Baneblade to be converted into a Fellblade-ish creation utilising Machinator resin parts.

It will be a slow job as I need to finish off a Stormlord and a couple of LandRaiders first , maybe throw in a couple of pics of them as I go !

I got the Baneblade from eBay , its ok but needs some cleaning up and really could do with some disassembly to help with fitting the great resin Machinator parts.
I'm hoping that as the previous owner has primed all the parts black first some brake fluid will not only strip the paint but also help it come apart as paint will be in the joints.

Main drama I'm having at the minute is whilst I was degreasing the resin the resin parts in my sink I manged to loose a couple of small parts down the plug !
No Problem ! Tom McBride of Machinator will replace them with my next order ( hopefully this week ) free of charge !!
People buy your resin from Tom !!!

Whilst the brake fluid works on the Baneblade , thought I'd do a bit to the StormLord , I stole the armoured fuel cells that were going on the Banblade and fitted them so needed a patch job with the airbrush and now starting the pin washes prior to some final shading and chipping / weathering . I feel ill at the thought of the amount of chips that will go on this !

LOL , its like no one can weld anymore !

When i was 12 I used to like all the skull on skulls with a rivetted skull brooch , I just cut them off now !

Thanks buddy.

I'm sure the arc welders broke and then to repair them was heresy against the Machine God so we're stuck with rivets

The Baneblade was a little stubborn at dis-assembling itself but I managed to do a bit of work on it , namely rear hull plate and the turret ring. The Machinator parts fit as well as you cut the GW donor parts out , and in that respect you need to be quite careful how you cut out , GW hasn't stinted on the thickness of plastic and it takes a bit of a practised hand to do it .
If its your first go be prepared to cut the same line 10 or so times before you get anywhere near thru.

Just randomly doing bits here and there at the minute , magnetised my SturmRaiders for the Machinator Gattling gun , I think it looks pretty sweet , and it gives me 3 weapon options now. I'll finnish the barrels with some burnt weathering and some chipped desert yellow.

Pretty awesome if you play them as a Punisher variant I think!

Funny in a good way ????? LOL

Yeah I know what you mean but my concern was the painting standard of the tracks not the reversed direction , which in my view makes them look like mini LandRaiders !

Working on chips and weathering the StormLord , decided to try a mix of sponge and brush instead of just brush as its so large and apart from a few obvious blobs that I'll clean up , I reckon its turned out fairly well. Masking up for the recognition marking to break up the large plate a bit.

Mate , sometimes its like being a glacier moving thru glue carrying heavy shopping , innit ?

My trouble is , mainly , that I start far too many things at once to avoid becoming bored , but then it takes forever to get things finished.

If you can wait 20 or so years , I'll spray a few for you !

Mate , already up , here - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/505689.page

Backwards Leman Russ Vindicator doesn't exactly roll off the tongue so me and my son call them SturmRaiders , I just made them up from spares we had , actually fairly simple and straight forward if you are handy with a hobby knife . I would imagine its even easier if you use parts that aren't already painted and glued

Once you've magnetised the barrel pretty much all the Imperial heavy weapons will fit !

This StormLord just won't go away and is taking forever , but its starting to look like it'll get finished off soon , think I went overboard on the amount of chipping on it. It was my first go at sponge chipping rather than just a paintbrush and got a bit carried away !

Today got quite a bit done to my "FellBlade" using Machinator resin parts. I love these conversion kits and how they transform a very GW-esque vehicle into something I actually like the look of !
AND I only stuck myself to the tracks a couple of times .
Glad I bothered to magnetise all the turrets and weapon options , very excited about the range of weapon options now. Magnets are for winners.

Getting alittle tired of chips and scratches but - must - push - on. Hoping a couple of days and I'll have most of this Landraider done.

Also to have a bit of a break , built a Librarian from a old , stripped body and some spares , the hand pose from the Scout Snipers is a bit "gangsta" but hopefully it will look ok with a bit of OSL or something.

Ok , so after a distinct lack of interest to my "What cam on the assault squad ?" question on my showcase blog decided I'd start with a simple stripe pattern like my vehicles.

Colours used are same as the vehicles , Tamiya desert yellow and Vallejo Panzer Grey but look a very different shade in real life , whether its cos its brush painted instead of air brush or a different mix I dunno.

Anyhow , here's the Assault squad WIP.

A little bit more done on the Assault Marines , shaded the grey cam , and chipped the armour , tbh my heart wasn't in it tonight and it looks a bit off , but fairly happy with the scorch paint effect I started on the engines !

Hoping they'll come together soon as I'm struggling to keep interested right now !

Thoughts ?

The pea dot looks a lot better IMHO it comes across more random which works, the wavy line effect I think can become over powering on a mini.

Good choice to return back and it looks great as well, I love the jump packs and the weathering makes sense for heat damage to be evident.

Greta job

Its quite a subtle looking camo, simple and effective.

Really love those bases, looking forward to seeing your latest batch finished.

Thanks for the feedback fellas, the pea dot does look better, its a modified version of modern German desert flecktarn (once the brown and tan dots are on ), I couldn't bring myself to try multicam as I haven't got a million hours a week to paint !

I am slightly gutted as the wavy line pattern just doesn't do it for me , oh well , don't tell the boy !

I like how the purple/ brown heat damage turned out , it will now feature on plasma / melta / large gun muzzle brakes too !

Got an hour or two in on the Devastators, I think the Cam pattern will do , some dark shades and a few highlights needed to finish it off.
Started the "scorched" effect on the weapons.

I absolutely love the assault squad, they are looking very dynamic and your paint scheme just works for them. The 'burnt' exhaust on the jump packs looks spot on, the basing is top notch and the OSL looks good.

The Dev's are looking good too but I'm not such a fan of the pea dot camo, perhaps it's just horses for courses. That said as a group the completed Dev squad come together nicely. The techmarine and chaplain are coming along nicely. I get the impression you may have gone a bit overboard on the OSL on the Libbies face and/or hood but it could just be the pictures or possibly just me!

Usually marines look weird in camo imo but these are really cool. And I really like the OSL, especially on the jetpacks and the libbys force weapon. A tutorial would be great if you have the time. Heat damage on the weapons looks ok but maybe don't extend it all the way to the casing of the weapons. It looks a bit weird.

I like the look of these in Camo - the only problem is with camo colours they will always look muted, it's going to be difficult making them "pop", maybe brighten the bases up to show off the matt marines more.

Hmm , I robbed the OSL technique from other Dakka users and maybe simplified it a little , maybe will make a tutorial on the next devastator squad if anyones interested ?

Good point, will keep the heat damage on the muzzles.

Thanks mate , coming to the hobby from being a WW2 modeller I find bright colours a challenge ( see the Jump Pack Chaplains base !!!) but will certainly try to give a couple of bases of bit more colour in the next batch.

More random Space Wolf / Storm Wolf pea dot cam goodness.

So , I was planning on German panzer grey stripes for the Fell Blade , but I'm kinda toying with the idea of some kind of enbiggoned pea dot cam , just to teach me a lesson in repetition and boredom control.

What do you reckon ?

I expect you would be thinking I'd be cracking on with the termies and Dread etc ( don't even mention the pin wash on the FellBlade - I'm genuinely avoiding that)

No , I've started my long running (no pun intended) long legged Dreadnought , all magnetised except for the arm ball joint (bluetac at the minute) not sure if I'll glue this or try to magnetise it.

Thinking of making a Dreadnought sized Storm Shield and have him with a squad of THSS terminators....

I think the issue on the smaller models with the wavy lines was largely that they looked too thick. and as a result didn't break up their look much. The pea dot type however looks spot on.

This home brew Vanguard squad seems to have been going on forever ( before the new plastics one were released by a LOOOOONNNNGG way ) but I manged to get a fair bit done tonight and had fun in the process.

Top marks in my book.

I really like these , they're a hotch potch of parts from the bits box , new resin from Anvil Industries , and real evil stuff left over from when my youngest lad was 3 or 4 and covered everything in orange paint .....

Love your work mate! I'm a bit late to the party, but the master of signals is amazing. Clever use of bitz and excellent painting, as usual.

It's a shame that 40mm bases are not game legal for powered armoured models cause they give a lot of character those Vanguards.

Keep it up!

Thanks mate.

Fortymilsmortymil. I'm not too concerned about game legal , more about how they look and more importantly on the bigger models , how many times my son and his friends knock them over , bigger bases stop the paint being chipped !!!!

Hey buddy! great looking work! The assault troops look great!

Just a quick question.... (not sure whether to PM or put it in this section) Could you advise me on where (if you use it) you get the silicone for creating your moulds to make your resin parts?

Really fancy giving it a go.... just not sure what i am looking for when it comes to silicone etc......

HaHa , ain't that the truth. OR my little fella goes and uses parts I had been saving to make a Dwarf / Space Marine magician with Laser Hammer !!! 10 year olds will do that !

I really had to get all OCD and put all my bits in hobby organisers and little drawer things from IKEA . Labelled , organised, easy. ( also weird) but happy !! :-)

Haha, I don't have that problem, my ten year likes to play, but she doesn't do any modelling of her own yet. My two year old likes to get into my paint brushes and such. Always fun when you're detailing to have a little munchkin trying to steal brushes and paints.

Nice on the bins, I have zip lock bags, and then into bins, but it tends to spread across the room as projects continue until CHAOS!

Started work on the second Land Raider's grime and pin washing , only gave the varnish 24 hrs to cure but it seems ok .

Much prefer oils for weathering , pin washes , tinting etc , its so easy to move the paint around before it dries.

Right , during an evening of convivial red wine and a Dwarf / Goblin skirmishing in a box I decided I would matt varnish my latest Land Raider.

Almost immediately after the varnish touched, the paint bubbled like i'd hit it with too much thinners , it didn't frost , just looks like paint stripper got spilled on it. Its not uniform , just in patches.

I have used the exact same paints , Tamiya sealed with Humbrol gloss varnish , Abteiltung oils and (shock horror) GW satin / matt varnish on top many times before with really pleasing results.

Mostly I have let the gloss varnish and oil wash layer cure for 48 hrs or more , this time it was only 24hrs. Could this be it ?

Any one know what went wrong this time ?

That is quite strange indeed. I don't use oil paints myself so I won't be of much helps I'm afraid...
Could it be humidity level or temperature in your area? Like you said though, this could be a happy accident to use for future projects

Thanks for the reply and link jpwtrm , I'll maybe msg them and see what they think.

I personally think the gloss varnish wasn't properly cured , it looks for all the world like I put paint remover or cellulose thinners on the surface rather than the top layer of dull coat. So I'm thinking there was some kind of chemical reaction going on .

It would look pretty good for Nurgle vehicles however , if I can only manage to do it in the right places .........

hat brand of varnish did you use to seal the paint before you applied the oil wash? You definitely have a chemical reaction between the two going on there.

My thoughts exactly mate, once upon a time , in between good jobs, I worked in a spray bay that painted agricultural machinery / lorries etc. It looked the same to me as if the paint was reacting or I'd spilt cellulose thinners on it.

The varnish under the oil wash wash was a can of aerosol Humbrol Enamel gloss varnish , then oils then Citadel Purity Seal.
I use aerosol varnish so I don't gum up my airbrush , I have a hard enough time keeping it running sweet as it is.
I've used this recipe several times before with no ill effects but always left the gloss to dry ALOT longer before I did the rest

I would guess that you definitely didn't give the gloss varnish enough time to dry before applying the oils. I've been researching the process quite a bit and many guys recommend using a water based clear coat instead of spray varnish. I have yet to us oil weathering but I never use enamel based varnish any more.

Wise words mate , Klear floor polish may well be the way ahead for this technique, its worth trying tho as the oils are superb at shading and weathering compared to acrylics.

Yes you thin it about 1 part polish to 10 parts water. It flows like water really and cleans up easily. I'm not sure where you get it in the Uk but I buy mine at the grocery store in the aisle with the floor cleaners and such. It's a household product manufactured by Johnson's so I would assume it's not impossible to find.

I've used Klear before it's pretty good, Forgeworld and a lot of modeling magazines etc, recommend it, I've used it neet from the bottle in a spray gun or you can brush it on.

Another good thing is that it is acrylic like GW paints so you can strip models with it on with fairy power spray etc.

I thought that cracked effect was deliberate . If you haven't found out what caused that effect I suspect that something hadn't finished setting and/or the spirit you used hadn't evaporated enough.

Lovely painting on the tanks as always!

I've been reading up on Klear and its properties , quite like the idea of using in tinted for washes etc.
Will be trying some out when I get chance.

I agree , I think 48hrs minimum is required as a cure time before a top coat of matt varnish , tho if I switch to Klear it won't matter !

Thanks mate ! I may use the "Crackle Method" on my nurgle tanks now !

Had a day off work today , and as the boy was at school I managed to get something done !

First off , I rigged up a "Heath Robinson" mini spray pot for my suction fed Badger airbrush. It originally had quite a large pot that wasted a lot of paint if I only need a small amount but I couldn't find a small, gravity fed style cup for a model 200 anywhere.

So I bought a different manufactures cup, that clearly wouldn't fit and taking a candle I bent a piece of plastic tube to attach it, a bit of tape sealed the gaps and Boom ! it works really well !

Next I completed some Dwarfs and movement trays for Little H's new WHFB obsession.

Currently I'm working on some details on the "Crackle Raider" , hopefully finish it tonight.

Finished putting static grass on this rocky hill.

Now having a poke about on my "Engine Room " for a Zone Mortalis / Space Hulk idea that NerdFest09's blog got me interested in........

Lots of work left to do on this yet , least of which is some flooring , wall detail and some gantries on top of the blue plastic cylinders to give some different heights.

What do you think ?

Duude! I gotta say hell yeah! that engine room works well :-) I love the blue thingies and the shiny pipes, they're the two parts that really scream engine room to me! and the size is spot on as well (that's what she said)

I have my second order from tAB so i'll try and glue down the rest of my tiles and I'll send you the remaining ones I have if there's some left over :-)

Oh and Crackle raider is brilliant! I love the effect and how it looks properly used and abused without being ill maintained, i'd like to see some pics of all your works with a black background to really set of the colour scheme? those Dwarfs ( I thought it was spelt Dwarves but I got spell checked!) look tasty too, great subdued palette!

:-)

What can I say ? I have an extremely diverse bits box !

Thanks mate !

A group shot is a great idea , will have a go after the weekend.

I thought it was "Dwarves" too......

A quick attempt that turned into a fail. Will have another after the weekend when I have a bit more time.

There's a fair bit not on here, it was testing my patience trying to get it in , but these are probably the better stuff.

Little H did the skulls and decorations and the exhaust pipes. I'm to blame for the rest.

Just in case I didn't have enough work in progress projects ongoing (notice the Baneblade right at the begining of this blog hasn't appeared painted yet.....) AND with an undue amount of temptation started by the likes of NerdFest09 and others, today I started a Zone Mortalis / Space Hulk project.

Space Zone or Mortalis Hulk if you will .

First , I ordered a few ZM style walls from BlueForge in Australia. A great company sells really useful products , unfortunately in the wrong hemisphere.

Then , while they were on there way , I did a bit of planning and went to the local timber merchant for MDF. I wanted to be able to do a ZM style set up with extra corridors etc reminiscent of Space Hulk. A full Space Hulk corridor set in 3D would've been awesome but costly and very time consuming , so I cut the amount of separate corridors right back . I can always add more later I suppose.

Next , I wanted the corridors and floors raised so that any broken / melted flooring could be modelled with lots of pipework etc underneath. What you see is just the framework , I'm going to hang lots of extra details and floor tiles on the MDF.

The Zone Mortalis boards will have raised floor levels too , so that the corridors can link them together.

I think I'll get a box of Doors from Spartan Games and make a frame to fit.

Overall a happy couple of hours , now I'll have to wait till next month to get some Angry Badger floor tiles , unless I decide to make my own....

Got some hours in on the "Zone Hulk" tiles , mainly building a few more till I ran out of square dowel spacers for the flooring, then started on some pipework under the floor, need to find some electrical wire to add in there too, but almost done.

Will be starting the wall details soon.

I can't wait to see what you come up with to be able to use them as ZM & SH and decorate them up, it's simply going to be amazingly cool, esprcially with your skills at weathering and osl!

Thanks mate , I'm quite pleased with how its turned out so far.

I was planning on sticking "spaceship" style grating tiles on to the MDF corridor pieces, but I see what you mean, the holes do have a broken concrete kinda look to them. Now I'm unsure !!!

Not sure exactly what the walls are made from . I bought them from BlueForge in Australia. They DO have a concrete like texture , tho they appear to be some kind of blue foam board. Poly cement and superglue melts it so having to use PVA to hold detailing !

As nerdfest says there is really no end of options, with something like this
the pieces sound good apart from super glue being a problem... Try something called "Rocket card glue" by Deluxe materials. its a really quick acting and strong PVA.

the floor still sounds possible, a melted effect could be achieved with pva and/or greenstuff might work
or just make the holes a little bigger and have smaller holes in the floor plates.

You could try adding wires/cables onto the walls using either thin plastic rod or metal wires.

Camo Space Marines , A bit of Nurgle and Now with added Rat stink ! WIP @ 2014/02/05 14:00:17

Post by: nerdfest09

Oh I forgot to mention, when I'm gluing on those walls BigH I use a clear craft glue, it's stickier than pva and still sort of melts the foam but not as bad as other stronger glues, everything sticks well and it doesn't run, you just make sure you don't slide pieces around or push while it's drying too much! i'll grab a pic of the brand i use if you want?

Camo Space Marines , A bit of Nurgle and Now with added Rat stink ! WIP @ 2014/02/05 20:15:46

Post by: Big H

Thanks OneManNoodles , I'll try that glue , sounds ideal. Flooring won't be a problem, I don't think, just lots of cutting !

NerdFest09 I'd like to see that glue if you have a pic, tho the chances of it being the same in the civilised world is slim !

LOL , isn't that how everyone does it ?

Bugger.

Well , I got quite a bit of flooring done today.
I worked out how big an area the corridors and rooms came to , and it turns out if I was to buy laser cut MDF I'd need about £100 worth of it.

So, decided to make my own ! The basic floor was made from plasterer's mesh, which coincidently was the same width as my floor base. Then I managed to use up nearly all my Plasticard checker plate, a ton of plain plasticard, a cornflakes box and all my U shape girder and angle girder.

Oh and a litre of PVA, yes, a WHOLE litre !

I wanted some really fine grit to represent crud and melted steel on the edges of holes but my sand was too coarse, thought salt might be perfect but it dissolved in the PVA and hasn't stuck properly , so hopefully some paint will stick it down.

This is without doubt the biggest project I've started to date, and its fun !

And expensive !

I now need to add approximately a million rivets, any of you professional riveters care to pass on a fool proof quick rivet ? I was thinking of drilling holes and adding cut down dress makers pins ?

OK , need help here.

I'm sat thinking on a colour scheme for the Space Hulk corridors and Zone Mortalis boards.

I think its a given there'll be some black and yellow striping , and some details in bronze or red , maybe some duck egg green engine parts etc but for main colour ?

Grey ? Really dark / gloomy / gritty with patches of extreme highlights and OSL from corridor lamps.

OR
Stark white ? Extremely chipped and weathered white / pale grey, with hard "florescent" OSL from corridor lamps.

Comments appreciated !

LOL , trying my best mate , but my use of salt as rust / crud was a BAD mistake.

NEVER use salt to represent anything on a model , it just keeps dissolving and coming through the paint , its been a real drama , and taken two coats of black primer and four of varnish to fully seal it in before I even dare begin to start painting !

Bad things happen. Just take it as a lesson learned for the future.
Did you try ordinary (fine) sand with some PVA or a structure paste (e.g Red Oxide from Vallejo) instead?
Should give the same effect but without the bad effect.

Yep , all fixed , the varnish finally sealed it all in.
Fine sand would have been WAY easier but I just didn't have anything fine enough at the time ( my usual sand is a mix of coarse building sand and shot blasting steel slag from when I once worked shot blasting agricultural machinery ....)

I'm waving my lighter in the air for the joint project emotion !

How about some kind of postal / internet ZM league ? Is that even possible ? or even a good idea ?

Couldn't really be bothered tonight , an excellent steak and bottle of red slowed me down a bit, so cut a few pieces for future flooring and made a little visitor for the soon to be fitted hatch.

A ZM builders League is a cool idea , with affiliations to the "Space Hulk Builders and Riveters Association" ?

Great minds buddy , great minds !

To be fair that made sense to me

I hope no one will be too dissatisfied but I am changing the name and content of this blog slightly to more incorporate all the other stuff I'm doing and also so I don't have to keep starting and finishing WIP blogs.

It will mostly be Marines , with Zone Hulk and some Nurgle stuff thrown in. And probably a load of sh@@bag dwarves my son wants painting.
Without input from him I can't realistically claim all the time spent at the hobby table is for his army !

So , whilst not exactly bored of cutting flooring for the Zone Hulk tiles , I did fancy a break.

Here it is , a poorly made and smashed to bits ebay Defiler turned into something much more pretty !

Quite a lot still to do. Those with sharp eyes will notice a million hold lines and poor joints ! Ha , going to Nurgle it up with the Dremel tool and a ton of green stuff…..

Thanks mate, I'm quite pleased with how it turned out so far, once details like piping and greenstuff on on it should be sorted, but for now it's on hold , got a bit of a work trip to do , so it's back to dwarfs for my boy, a couple of Death Guard try outs and some ninja!!!

So , today I seriously was going to weed the garden, but the weeds will still come back , so I added some" rust "( fine sand/baking soda) and greenstuff and various other bits to the Defiler.

Over the last couple of weeks I've got a fair few Dwarfs done , tho the old , pre slotta base Citadel types are a real pain as the details can be quite indistinct and they are all individuals, making batch painting problematic.

Favorites are the Empire "Landsknecht" style dwarfs and the Clint Eastwood " Dwarf with No Name "

And some random Ninja's.

Well thanks Nerdy, but to be honest my skin technique is Elf flesh base, Argrax Earthshade was and a bit of maroon wash here and there !

Today I couldn't get going thru my hangover. Managed to prime the Defiler, found a couple of random German zombies that look like they might be fun to paint and put together some Anvil industry infantry. I wasn't keen on the original, moulded on heads so snipped them off and added some Kromlech German gas mask heads, reckon they are going to be pretty cool as additions to my Nurgle guard.

Then he wanted to build a Dwarf mountain Hold with all the Halls and everything , in an afternoon, using up the last of my pink foam. Got a little stressful I can tell you , and we don't have anything now but a pile of foam chips…...

Finally got to sit and do some proper work (!) on my resin LandRhino's . I frisking love these.

I'm magnetising all of them ( I have four standard ones) except the two I'll build as stand in Vindicators, so I can use them as all normal Rhino variants , Whirlwinds etc etc, also going to build a couple of straight MICV variants with ACAV style gun shields.

Still some details to go on these and some gap filling, but wanted to get some pics posted !

I also just bought some resin bits from OneManNoodles , a regular on Dakka.

He has ebay listings here : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221415586128?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649

( thats a defiler for sale but will get you in the right area for the rest of it ! ) or look for him on Dakka.

These bits are, quite frankly , indispensable , if like me your mind can plan and invent better things than your feeble plasticard skills can create !

If you plan on building anything from a building , vehicle or space ship / space hulk these parts will make the detailing so much easier and way more believable.

The resin is in general well cast and bubble free , there are the odd one here and there but easily fixed. Its hard resin and cleans up easily.

I particularly like the door keypads and the large box with the chamfered corner that is so gagging to be made into a weapon system.

I've no particular axe to grind for Noodles , but his stuff is great and he's a nice bloke too ! Check it out.

Thanks mate !

Well today i intended to do a bit of gap filling on the Landrhinos. So obviously instead I converted another Defiler from the depths of my bit skip.

The arms are magnetised so I can swap them around with the other Defiler. I like how the Demolisher cannon turned out, and considering the amount of parts its made from its all pretty much in line!

I plan on adding some smaller weapons to the missile launcher arm and a complete new spare arm made of lots of "fused" weapons, Obliterator sty-lee.

Maybe fill some gaps tomorrow.

Got me mojo back and had a good morning with some paint.

Base coated my 2 Defilers , which I'm intended to paint up like the two Chaos Marine Test minis. White/ Pale Cream and Green heavily chipped and weathered.
Thoughts ?

I also weathered with oils two Landspeeders, rusting them up quite a lot to match my Dreds and Landraiders, you may argue that machines that fly made of steel wouldn't fly well but it looks good enough for 40k !

And experimented with oils on an Assault squad , tho I'm not sure you can really tell any difference on troop sized models.

Still lots to do , smudges to clean up and details etc but I'm well on the way to clearing a space on my work bench !

Thanks buddy, yeah its been too long , severe lack of drive going on at my house lately !!!

REALLY wanted to finish the Landspeeders and maybe the Jump Marines tonight, but No, after acquiring some junk , super crappy, rigid pose 1980's Empire Halbardiers when I took my son to the local FLGS, I obviously had to provide access to all my secret bits in my Bitz Skip and create a whole new unit for my lads embryonic Empire army.

95% done on the Landspeeders. Bases need a bit of work and some clumps of foliage but more or less there.

The standing gunner will get his head from Nerdfest ( crikey)

Thought I'd go back to a bit of old school brush work on the lens's and engines rather than airbrush them , think that may have been a mistake. but done.

Crew look ok, not sure if they might need a bit of rust on the chips too ?

But all in all I"m calling them done.

EXCEPT for the horror that the Matt varnish I just sprayed all over both of them has come up super SUPER gloss, as did the next coat of matt varnish to try and fix the previous drama.
WTF ????

Todays effort has left me totally Meh.

I thought this was going to look awesome before I started to mess with the lens / OSL.
I wanted to try a different colour than green / blue , as my marines use that colour. However turns out I'm not great at pink. I'm about halfway thru the process but it looks pants to me so I open it to you guys, Continue with the pink and finish or can the pink and go for Blue/ Green , even tho my loyalist marines use that colour ?

Also pretty Meh, the verdigris on the Chaos stars.

Thoughts , comments, queries.

Well, I agree with the OSL that doesn't look as good as blue/green... So I'd say go for what is working !

As for the verdigris, it looks great on the legs, not on the stars... I think the problem with the stars is that the whole part is covered in verdigris... It probably would look better if you only put it in the recesses, with a few blotches on top ?

Anyway, the Defiler looks creepy enough

Wise words. I REALLY wanted pink to work, but even the colour wheel was saying blue/green. Maybe i should just go with that ?

Ref. Verdigris. Agreed , it needs some variation in tone. Work for tomorrow.

Yggdrsil, I hope you don't mind , but when people ask how i do my OSL I link them to you !

Some stuff done tonight , finished to a reasonable table standard the Halberdiers bought cheaply at the FLGS last week, banner and shields sorted later when the boy decides the symbols he wants for his new Empire army.

My boy has really got into the Empire / Landskncht 16th Century mercenarary army thing, which seeing as he is only 11 surprised me a little ! But they really are tedious to paint !
FW's Dread is beautifully sculpted, only hope my rough skills will do it justice !

So , last week I got some of my boys archers done as a trial ( 30 odd left to do ) .

And got a fair bit done on my Anvil Industry counts as Nazi Nurgle Traitor Guard. Not entirely happy yet , maybe still too WIP , but perhaps the brown weapons don't really "fit" . Would black / grey be better ?

And started some Anvi Black Ops marines , they are a little darker than I usually do , and I haven't applied any oils yet. Might be on the wrong track with these too !

Comments Please !!!

And just for a bit of variation , I put a few hours adding details to my new pride and joy, a scratch built 40k themed STUG III for my Nurgle Nazi Zombies.

The yellow tube is being used as a junction for the real barrel once I've made it , tho actually it doesn't look that bad as the weapon itself. What do you reckon ?

I have some 40K Panzer IV's too , tho they are still missing tracks, turrets etc .

The STUG was built by OneManNoodles and I must say I am extremely happy with it, in hindsight I might have asked for track fenders but possibly would've lost a lot of it 40k-ness in doing so.
In short "happy"

Love the Black Ops and scratch built tank! That thing is a real beast!

The camo on the marines looks more like weathering ATM. A lot of the camo patches look as random and "edgy" (for lack of a better word) as scratches made with a sponge. Maybe that's just me though...

For the Nurgle Guard's weapons, why no camp them also? You could then add wear and tear with black/dark grey.

Great job, keep it up!

Yeah , I love the STUG 40 (my new name for it) Not sure what scheme to paint it but I'm going to enjoy it !

I see what you mean about the Camo. The chipping and cam pattern is very similar. Hopefully some oils and a few highlights will cure that somewhat.

Thanks for the comments!!

Feeling shamed into posting as I've been very lazy lately.

The Stug is about ready for primer. Not sure if I'll go for a plain grey colour or a more involved camo scheme yet.

I oil "pin washed" the Nazi zombies as I wasn't happy with the Argrax Earthshade nightmare I had before, they're beginning to look a bit better now , will need some highlights I think.

And lastly some Death Guard heads on the cheap.

You're right mate , if I'd thought about it for more than the 5 seconds i did , I would have put some track guards on ! Too late now I primed it this afternoon in the warm sun !

Not sure how that will turn out, picked up some acrylic matt black paint from Aldi for £2:95 a can !!!!

I'm thinking something along real WW2 Stug lines for the camo, maybe a version of the Ambush pattern?

The Bad.

The Ugly.

And this last one really breaks me up. I spent most of the day applying oil washes and tints , layer after layer creating what i truly believe was some of my best work ever and when I came to seal it in I went for the easy option of the cursed can of GW varnish and the fething thing frosted up and now all I have is a layer of grey on everything .

Remind me to never buy GW paints again, and to only every use my airbrush to put on varnish, which were both sat laughing at me as I battered my head on the hobby desk cursing GW…..

Any one know how to reliably fix grey frosted varnish ?

After searching Dakka I found the cure for frosted matt varnish to be a coat of spray gloss varnish, this did the trick and I sprayed the Dread and Defiler afterwards with my airbrush to avoid further disaster.

Dread is almost done, want to give him a swanky base to stand on.

Defiler pictured below. Was a bugger to photo because the matt varnish was more like satin.

Got the basic colours on the Stug 40 , looks a little harsh at the minute but I'm sure it will look sweet with the details , chipping. and weathering on.

I've got a set of extra armour side plates that I've done in the same scheme, but I'm toying with "graffiti" ing them with Nurgle symbols for the Traitor guard I'm working on.
Thoughts ?

I have no idea why, but decided to assemble and paint an ogre kingdoms Yhetee that my eldest boy bought about 10 years ago and left it to gather dust , unglued and unloved.

It's metal, and was in a really static pose so with the aid of some pliers I made the pose more dynamic, a strip of leather in the pliers jaws stopped them ripping off too much detail.

With all the joints pinned and green stuffed and a bit of a beard added to fill the huge gap between body and head I decided to do the bulk of the fur with my airbrush just to see if i could, some shading was brushed in after but its largely just zenithal airbrushing. Face and hands in inks rather than paint, applied with a brush.

Its mostly done , but would like to finish the base with some snow effects when I get some hobby money again.

Got a little paint time in tonight , finished a few details on the Stug 40k and its now varnished ready for decals and oils.

Also the snow effect I ordered from ebay turned up so had a bash at snow on the Yhetee base, I've never tried snow before and was a bit unsure what to do, however I ended up making a thick mix with water effect and then spooning it on with an old brush, I'd put some tufts of grass on first and worked the mix into these so grass stood out of the snow.

I'll be honest , at this stage it didn't look too great, then I decided to sprinkle dry snow on top of the whole base , it stuck to the snow mix and grass really well and looks a lot like frost.

Reasonably chuffed with how its turned out, but still can't get the lighting right ! Sorry Nerdy !

The boy was out today, which meant i could paint what I liked !!!!

More or less finished my Stug 40, still debating whether to "dust it up" a bit or leave it as is.

I made the Stug modular in that the shurzen are magnetised in case it needs to be loyalist ( less noticeable nurgle symbols ) and the long barrel slides into the shorter weapon using friction to hold it.

Ready to finish the two Panzer 40's i have sitting here looking sorry for themselves, and will make a big effort tonight to finish the DeathGuard dread I started ages ago …!

Happy New Year !

and yes I did snap off the ammo tin lid whilst taking the pics …

Semi finished the Nurgle Dread tonight, it has been a pain as I dropped it onto a tiled floor and shattered all the resiny goodness, and for some reason the matt varnish has dried glossy

Sorry to hear about the mishaps, it is looking disgustingly great nonetheless!

The Dread is great! glossy suits it being nurgley :-) perhaps you can offset the gloss by using a black powder to simmulate soot on the exhaust and weapons? the matt finish would look good imo? and perhaps the base in places or some some taller vegetation?

and I love the Nazombies :-) I'm actually jealous of the way you do them, the overall look to the clothing and the tonal variation from washes is brilliant and I love the look but cannot break from my style of painted details :-( so I'll have to settle for your ones to satisfy my passion for different styles :-)

I'd intended to matt varnish all over and then apply gloss varnish in streaks and patches to get the "ooze" look, bizarrely the whole thing looks more flat today , perhaps my varnish has "creeping matt-ness" !!

The soot is a very good idea tho, I wasn't happy with the exhausts , maybe that will fix them.

You crack me up Nerdy ! I learned to paint on white primer going from light into dark with washes, inks and glazes BECAUSE i just can't get the results I want from painting on black primer going dark to highlight ! I just don't have the fine brush control that people like you , Bebop and Raff ( to name a few on Dakka) have !

Tonight I added soot to the Nurgle Dreads weapon and exhausts , looks much better. Pics to follow maybe.

Then did a bit of work on my Panzer 40k Leman Russ stand- ins. Track links are tedious but look pretty good once on.

I was going to replace the main gun with a larger , more 40k weapon but I'm not so sure now, I think the original 1:32nd scale barrel looks pretty cool ? Thoughts anyone ?

Turrets are from Airfix 1:32nd scale Panzer IV's, resin parts and plasticard chassis the most excellent work of OneManNoodles ! Thanks matey !

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like your considered opinions.

I have come into possession of two really cheap Baneblades, one built , one on sprues and a shed load of spare bits and gubinz.

I think I could convert one to being nurgle fellblade and one to being a giant Sicarius.

Or I could sell the bits and use the money to buy Drop Pods for my boys Storm Wolves.

What do you think ? ! ?

While I'd love to see what you would do with them, from a practical POV, how much use would they get? Vs the pods? Which, while not very sexy, are very useful.

Thanks matey ! You're quite right , they would get zero use except for my lad making engine noises and pushing them around the floor !
Drop pods might be looking good then ! ? !

The Stug looks awesome, very well done.

Nice turrets the size looks perfect for the hulls.

Let me know if you need any weapons for those hull mounts

Thanks matey , i'm very happy with the Stug , just hope I can do justice to the Panzer 40's too. The Airfix turrets are ok aren't they ?
Already had some weapons from you !!!

Got a fair bit of work done today, mainly tidying up loose ends, but got the LandRhino Assault gun finished , basic one done and all magnetised to convert to Predator and just a set of tracks to finish on one Panzer 40.

A good day all up !

So , paint wise, I'm fairly sure I'll go with my standard Space Marine vehicle scheme for the LandRhino's i.e. Desert Yellow base with Panzer Grey disruptive stripes.

For the Panzer40's , go with the same as the Stug or perhaps a grey one and camo one ? ? ?

Thoughts anyone ?

I would urge anyone planning on doing large scale magnetising of their plastic crack not to do so whilst under the influence of alcohol and msg'ing chicks, I have managed to reverse polarity on the whole lot and have had to glue it together because I couldn't dig out the magnets without destroying the model !
