Hi all,
This thread is to show some of the progress I am making with regards to my gaming board project and a new 1850 point Bad Moon list I am working on.
I am not a particularly great painter, not bad but far from the standard of many amazing painters on this site. Any tips are warmly welcomed. I will also post the army list I plan to use in the army list section.
So, here goes......

The gaming board will be 8ft x 4ft. The other panels will be the standard GW ones. I will post more pics of the orks and the board as they both progress.
The Meganobz have now had their oil wash and clear up, typing this out as they are drying. Next up is a matt vanish then start adding the metallics.

Thanks Vine, they are basically small strips of wood with a small metal mesh behind it. I wanted to give the impression that the orks got kinda bored fixing it so stuck that over it and thought "that'll do"
More pics of the rest of the army coming soon, all designed from marine stuff.

Quick update on progress of gaming board, the sand has been added to he 6 GW realm of battle panels. They were first given an undercoat with white spray paint. Then a first coat of paint, we use a sulus paint watered down to do this.
Next stage will be a dark 'wash' then once dry it will be drybrushed with a lighter colour to pick up texture. Then it's just a matter of adding grass and weathering on the skulls etc... Hopefully fully completed soon.
Please note, the boards in the pictures will not be set out like that, we're just placed randomly while they are drying.

Have you made a wooden frame for the edge of the board? I've read the clips provided by GW don't work very well.

Kilkrazy wrote:Have you made a wooden frame for the edge of the board? I've read the clips provided by GW don't work very well.
Hi mate, yes I did. Basically I bought an 8ft-4ft piece of 18mm MDF. Got the shop to cut it in to 3 pieces for me for ease of transporting it home. Also bought several metres of thinner wood about 1.5 inches wide for the barrier around the edge of the MDF.
Then it was just a matter of nailing the thinner wood all around the MDF which gives a really nice platform for the gaming board to sit on. It also stops the dice rolling off.
To make storage easy we have hinged the pieces of MDF together so that they will effectively fold away. Although now not needed as the board is up permanently.

The next stage for the forgeworld panels is to add more foliage to them and to weather them. This is something we wanted to do with all the panels at the same time for ease of using materials etc... Will add more pics once this is done.

Trukk?!! Looks more like a bad ass armoured up battlewagon! add a magnetised weapon mount etc and id play that as a BW! the armouring looks awesome with all the plates, id definitely not miss the opportunity to have it be playable as both a BW and trukk, there really isnt a huge difference in sizes. battle wagon is roughly 6.5" including deffrolla, which your rhino is probably already!
EDIT: Finally realised what it reminds me of.... ROBOTWARS! im pretty sure ive seen that busting up some kiddies little metal can while he cries silently in the corner..... In fact that gives me an idea.... incoming robotwars based ork vehicles! Sir Killalot stompa?

Hahaha... The robot wars comment made me really laugh because I looked at the model and thought... "He's right, it really does". I never thought about using it as a BW. I have a land raider I am about to convert in to my warlord BW. I think I will def make a rolla to go on the front of this then for when I want to play a list more BW heavy.
I would love to see a killalot stompa, although Mortis was always my fav.

Battlebots was where it was at- a Bot that was unstoppable in Robot Wars (Razor) was just another contender in Battlebots.
Nightmare Deffrolla anyone?
69018
Post by: Solar Shock
Yeh razor was so sick, it was like a slow demise once that pincer started to puncture something Although hypnodisc was also pretty beefy. Currently im thinking of making a BW as either Sgt-Bash or matilda Shame his flamethrower was never any use other than against that one robot that entered every year coated in fur
Id say use something other than the normal deff rolla look. I am already a big fan of the shape of your plough as it is. Perhaps twin wrecking balls that jut out of the front?
73581
Post by: Boss Drachenfels
I was trying to think of the name of that robot with the fur. I know the one you mean but can't think of it's name.
On the deff rolla front I really like the idea of the wrecking balls. Would also be easy for me to make. Will prob add that to the land raider I will use for my first BW.
I am happy with how the plough came out. I imagined the orks pushing it through piles of their dead enemies. Or using it to clear race tracks of debris.
Cheers for the advice on the wrecking ball front, great idea.

Yeh me neither, but it was hilarious watching it burn almost every fight
Np! I am currently working on a heavily converted ork force, i havent uploaded pics in ages but I should. Always thought that orks in reality wouldnt all have the same deffrollas, they'd clearly all be trying to out do each other At current I want to build a skull tank where the mouth is some sort of big grinding deffrolla. still mostly a concept atm though. Working on an airship BW that has a giant iceskate that counts as a deffrolla, bout 50% done, but struggling with magnetising as ive never done it before
And yeh the bike is looking awesome Sleek tron feel Liking the base too, I need to get myself some nice chucky gravel like that. Keep the work flowing! your wayyyyy better at putting up pictures and im enjoying the project log.

Thanks mate, appreciate that. I will keep posting.
I would love to see some pics of what you are working on. The ice skate as a rolla!!!!!! Have to see that, sounds epic!!

The panel is £90 (I think, from memory). Not bad at all really, as I think it looks brilliant.
Yeah, the meganob is the OOP one. I like them because they have bad moon icons etc. and yes, they are a lot smaller than the current ones. I do really like the current models though. I got mine off eBay for £5 each. Should you want an actual klaw to go with it. Am currently in the process of building a warboss to go with them, he towers above them, just need to add on the welding and bolts to his armour. Will add a pic when that's done.

The panels added to the base so they can dry, the next stage is a dry brush (using dulux paint) all over the board. It adds a nice weathered texture.
After that some weathering on the thunderhawk then adding flock and foliage to the board in general. Will post more pics when that's done. I also hope to post a pic of the completed OOP meganob squad with their banners by the end of the week.

How did you get the marine bodies for the MANz?
I've wanted to do the same thing, but Ork heads and Marine bodies don't really fit scale wise?
Awesome Rhino conversion mate... but there are a few FW vehicles that might be more suitable than a Trukk if your that way inclined. For instance, Gun Wagons which are AV 13 transports - that would fit the model nicely
Edit: That board is ridiculously good btw. So much nicer than just the green table w/ terrain plonked on it.

Thanks for the comments Dakkamite:
The MANz are not made from marine bodies, they are the OOP metal meganobz from years ago. Check out eBay, you should be able to pick them up from there.
I went for the rhino conversions because my army theme is a looted marine ork army. Saying that, I am a big fan of forgeworld so will in no doubt add a few of their bits. At some point.
Cheers for the comments about the gaming board, we have put a lot of time in to it. Nice to see it coming together. We were very happy with that border too, kinda neatens things up nicely.

We have now 'drybrushed' the boards, added some flock and lichen then weathered the thunderhawk with some forgeworld weathering powders.

Looking sweet man really really nicely done. Only thing I can pick at would be the amount of charred earth around the Thawk. I would say more scortched earth around it, but that is literally the only flaw I could think of
Another thing, taken from another baord thread, where the squares used for the terrain were interchangable to alter up the game board. Also perhaps some alternate squares with more fortifications? or are they to come? At the moment I dont think those orks are gona enjoy the open field

Fear not my friend, fortifications are currently being painted up to go on the board. A Skyshield landing pad, a fortress of redemption and various other bits and pieces. And yeah, the boards are interchangeable, we swapped them around a couple of times to check they matched up near enough.
With regards to the charred earth I do see what you mean. I might lighten that up a little to make it more subtle.
Cheers mate.

Post by: Solar Shock
Ah phew! looking forward to the forifications! man you make me want to build a table
Yeh an interchangable board is such a useful trick, as imo boards quickly get played in a certain way/style. But in general really loving the work Just realised, its actually quite a large board especially compared to the ones at my FLGS. could get some nice and big ork hordes on that board!

Post by: Boss Drachenfels
Thanks Solar, and I totally agree that a board needs to be chopped around for variation in tactics.
With regards to the size, yeah.. It's pretty big, 8ftx4ft. I couldn't believe how much the extra 2ft made a difference. When the fortifications are done I will post pics.
Have a look at my battle report thread, a couple of the WIP pieces of terrain can be seen on that. They still need a bit of work, the fortress of redemption isn't in it but has been given it's undercoat.

The next time you do a wreck like the Thunderhawk, might I suggest AK Interactive's chipping fluid? You spray it on prior to painting your basecoat, then go at with a brush afterwards. Leaves a really good scratched/worn appearance, which is perfect for wrecks. It looks great as is, don't get me wrong!

I had a flat, re-enforced 4 by 8 foot table in the west wing of my old home. I didn't use modular boards which are fantastic, I just had throw cloths for terrain like urban I used gray, and then the terrain would get set down over it.
It has always been my goal to have the entire list of possible "maps" or boards that one can roll up to play a battle on. Still working on that project.
I absolutley think you guys are doing a bang up job! Terrain can really make or break a good game!

Kelly,
Thanks for your kind words.... I laughed when I read your request to come build a table and paint minis with you. I am lucky to have a fairly active and keen gaming community near where I live.
This board is in my outhouse so I can keep it in place all the time which is nice. With regards to how we applied the sand it is as follows:
Board itself given an undercoat
Whole board given a liberal covering of PVA glue
Sand then sprinkled over the board
Allow time to dry fully and shake off any excess
Using dulux paint we painted over the sand to seal it in place
Then we chose a darker shade of dulux paint, watered it down and effectively used it as a wash
Last stage of paint is to 'drybrush' the board once they are completely dry with a lighter shade of the first dulux paint
Seems to give a nice texture and feel to the board.
We will be adding more pics of the terrain pieces as they get finished.
Thanks again for your comments mate.

Brother Ectus wrote:Looking really cool Drachen some great poses you have put them in to. That yellow base coat looks good mate, what did you use?
Thanks Ectus,
All paints used were all from the vallejo range, started with the poly undercoat dark yellow, then gave a thin coat of the mole air dark yellow, then a ratio of 3:1 medium yellow and dark yellow. Then to finish just medium yellow.
This should leave a distinct line highlight to pick out the very edges with a lemon type colour from the mole colour range.
When are we gonna see a WIP thread of your Sons?

Had a bit of time to paint some orks, got a lot of the base colours done on the squad but decided to finish one so I could see what the completed boy would look like.
When painting boyz I balance making them look ok, but being aware they are 'cannon fodder' so not to spend too long on them. I have some nob bikers which I will spend more time on.
As always, comments are encorouged and welcomed.

Hi Farseer,
Thanks for the kind words, and yes. We were collecting when GorkaMorka was released, was a fun game. One rule made me laugh, it actually said you can cheat!!! But if you get caught you have to own up to it...

Drachenfels,
It's all coming along great! My apologies for not answering your question sooner. The Chipping Fluid actually works best when airbrushed! Generally you do airbrush a base coat of whatever color you'd like to see underneath, in this case probably black. Then you airbrush the fluid. Then the base coat of what you'd like the actual color of the piece - in this case, blue. (waiting for it to dry between coats, of course ) then you go at with a wet brush and just rough up the whole piece. Comes out lookin great, if I do say so myself.

Hey all,
I am afraid that 'real life' got in my way of painting for a while, had a bit more time over the last couple of days so got the first trukk finished up and snapped a few photos. Unfortunately the only camera I have is the one attached to my phone but hopefully they will come out ok.
Enjoy, and as always leave any comments.
Thanks

Superb weathering and lovely little details. I especially like the Gretchin/Snotling sticking his head out the hole in the side. And the welding on the front ram.
You certainly captured the character of an looted Ork Rhino. Gork and Mork would be well proud, that is epic!

Looks amazing mate, you have captured the true essence of everything Orky (and grotty) in one model. The weathering is so nice and I love the way you have done all the crud built up on "Da Big Ram" I may have to pick your brain on how you achieved that.

Thanks Ectus, very simple method. Firstly I used the GW texture paint to add the mud, then used a 'stone' basing flock and sprinkled some over it, then did the same with a grade flock.
Once it was dry and the whole model given a satin varnish I went over the mud (and a few other places on the model) with a gloss varnish to get the wet look.

Hey Boss! Glad to see your still posting Always nice to see that models are progressing, even if at a slower pace
id love to ask you some questions, I have just started to paint up some of my ork vehicles for the first time with an airbrush and im finding that my weathering is looking a little sporadic :/
Can you walk me through your process?
Im assuming:
you base white
Spray on the yellow and blend it down to the darker at the lower half
You then add weathering? - Black first then silver on top? Ive gone with the salt and hairspray technique which im still practicing the finesse of
What do you use in order to grim up and give your tanks that dirty look? a wash?

Post by: Boss Drachenfels
Hey Solar,
Good to hear from you, sorry it's been a while. Other things were getting in the way, but back on it now so should be posting again regularly with picture updates.
Here is how I do it:
Using an airbrush I use the vallejo yellow primer, it's quite dark and applies an amazing undercoat.
Then I use vallejo dark yellow, then gradually add medium yellow for 2-3 addition coats to get a nice blend.
To pick out the higher edges I add a little white to the mix and add to a few areas. It's subtle but makes a difference when complete.
Now for the weathering:
Firstly, the entire model gets a gloss vanish, actually 2 coats with a couple of hours drying time in between.
I then use Windsor and Newton oil colours to make a brown wash (use whatever colour you feel is right for the effect you are after).
Using this oil wash I shade the model and use it to 'dirty' it up a bit. Just don't over do it!!!
The scratches and welding:
Start with a 1:1 mix of dark brown and black, apply this to any scratches or metal work you want to be chipped.
Add a dark silver over this, then a brighter silver very finely (dry brush almost) over the top.
For a rust effect simply add some orange before this last step.
To finish off:
My last stage for weathering is to use the forgeworld weathering powder, I really like these and find them easier to use than some of the cheaper alternatives. The bottom part of the tank is given a liberal attack of this stuff. Then I just add it when I see fit.
Then the tank gets a satin vanish to keep it all in place.
Hope that helps mate.

Ahh excellent! thanks Boss Can i ask a little more about your oil wash? Ive been looking into picking up and using some oil wash techniques but I haven't really looked too much into it. I have a whole load of oils at home (usually paint with acrylic but got some oils for xMas), Can i ask what you thin it with? I have some 'flow aide' is that the right sort of stuff?
Something I wanted to try you might like :
If you dont thin the oils and apply little lines of a few colours, so like a brown, red, blue etc... then add whatever it is you use to make it a wash consistency with a brush on top, the colours will mix and flow into a wash look but with a good amount of the colours remianing in each area. (this is the technique that got me intrested in oils).
I am currently looking into some pigments and I think im going to try using some pastels I have I'l look into some other powders too! I like the rough effect they add.

I use white spirit to mix with the oil, how much really depends on what effect you are after. Basically, any form of mineral spirit will work, if flow aid is water based it won't work, I don't use it so don't know what it's based on.
The technique you mentioned I have tried for serious water marks etc.... Gonna use it again on my dakkatalons I have converted. Automatically Appended Next Post: Brother Ectus wrote:Great to see you back mate, I can't wait to see a pic of both trukks together. They look awesome.

This stage is at the first silver, I use a darker silver (leadbelcher) to first go over the brown/black. The next stage is to add the lighter silver to make the scratches 'pop' a little.

Appreciate the comment mate
That little grot is becoming quite popular. I must say that the larger board is so much fun to play on, it's 8ftx4ft. So far the largest battle we have had on it is 3k, but we want to go much larger than that.

Hey again all,
Have decided to do a larger update, basically most of the army is now converted and built (to the point where painting would become an issue), so I have taken a number of photo's to show you all before the painting stage starts. Once that happens I will add gradual progress pics as that goes on. I do paint that quickly and have limited time I can dedicate to the hobby, but I get stuff done when I can.
Hope you enjoy the update and please comment honestly.

Nice use of kits, I can see a good use of kans, bikes and other kits to really give each model a unique look Its hard to see because of the angles, but those blades on your dread look sweet when you next take some snaps could you get a shot with a better look at em?

Always awesome to see a comment from your good self on here, I was hoping you liked all the pics. The metal boss is the standing warboss which once upon time had a rather large squig on the end of his arm. I will try to upload a pic of him.
For the pens as engines, it was simply a moment of inspiration when I was in WH Smith with the Mrs. Looked at them and it suddenly occurred to me that they are perfect!!!!!!
You know your kits!!! I have looted from the following:
Nobz box set
Ork bikers
Space marine bikers
Killa Kans
Stormtalon
Rhino
Trukk
The armour is obviously just slabs on plasticard, in my view that's how orks would do it. Simply adding extra layers of metal!!!
BTW mate, loving your BW and the umbrella wielding Mek! You added pics of the meganobz you are working on yet?

I was taking another gander through the photos and only noticed that this morning! I love it! such an orky touch, made me laugh definitely one of my favourite touches on all the models so far. I also keep noticing more and more grots! its a grot piloting the talon? it is! is there also a grot inside the left-wing gun? where do you get your grots from? are they old ones you just had about? - as there all metal etc.
I also assume your making stuff with the IA ork list in mind too? I love that list and want to make so many of the alternate vehicles slightly holding off now ive reached a 2k force, waiting on the new dex before I start building anymore (really really really really really really hoping that ork walkers make a return)
And yeh Boss, loving the work dude, wish I had the patience to post pics as often as you I just get so lazy :(
Ah ok, I think I know the boss model your on about, I like that you used that model and not the AOBR, not that there is anything wrong with the AOBR boss, its just that most bike conversions I see use it and its nice to see other models getting the love. Yeh I need to use more random items in my ork builds. I pick up loads of little things that I think might be useful but never get round to using them. I might set myself a challenge next time I do a conversion to see how many non model bits I can use from around the house, hopefully then il incorporate them more in general ( half the reason I chose orks was for skrimping on the cash)
As for my meganobs, just finished giving a few of them their base coats in colours, they need a couple details added basically, but im hoping to not spend to long doing that trying to speed up my painting process (got a eldar army I want to start modelling ) I think il edit and put up more of a blog style of posts like you do - unless i remember how lazy I am and dont bother

Yeh those could look sweet id imagine thed make great killa kans, as they'd be damn expensive meganobs! OR a grot warboss would be sick. Grot warboss (in centaurion armour) on a bike? I know ork warbosses cant have mega-armour on a bike rule wise, but for a grot you could say thats where he makes up for his toughness..... and damn would it look funny!
73581
Post by: Boss Drachenfels
Hey Solar, hey Turgon,
The centurion idea is a really good one!!! That might have to happen!!
Solar,
Yes, I have the IA book and am planning to run my 'trukks' as big trakks. Think this suits the models more, they are all pretty armoured up and are physically larger than the trukks. The grots I got from the warhammer fantasy range. They are on the GW website. (at least they were about 6-8 months ago when I got these).
The AOBR boss is nice, but when I saw the arm with the squig on it I thought it was perfect for a biker as his arm is already half way to the handlebar. If you notice, on my bikes I like to have a hand controlling the bike. Rather than having weapons or gear in both hands.
I really just need to get myself in gear for the painting of that little lot.

Post by: Boss Drachenfels
Hey Solar,
The model is actually undercoated in the vallejo poly yellow, it's a dark yellow, almost with a hint of green.
From there I use an airbrush to lighten it up a bit with a couple of coats of other yellows. Then just get involved with a normal brush for skin etc.

Brother Ectus wrote:My mind is blown!!! that's so awesome, have you airbrushed the armour? it looks fantastic, cant wait to see more, great job.
Hi Ectus, yes. The armour is airbrushed, starting from a black undercoat and gradually working from a dark grey through to an almost white to finish. I have never really highlighted black with an airbrush before, as my previous army was Tau. So was quite happy with how this came out.
Thanks for the kind words mate, looking forward to see your SOM dreadies done.

Hey Boss! Ghaz is looking frickin awesome!
I agree, the armour is absolutely superb. can you give me a breakdown of how you achieved it? i still struggle with airbrushing such smll armour :(
I love the colour choices for the armour, it has a really nice dull metal look to it, that over the whole model looks totally sick.
pats to finish? the copper head plate? looks like it needs a little highlighting and/or washing, looking a little flat compared to his MEGAAWESOMEARMOURSRSRS
Also, you best be giving him a suitably cool base, as else you sir are truly not doing your models paintjob justice!

Hey Solar,
Cheers mate, glad you like him so far. As both you and Brother Ectus have asked about the airbrushing I will write out the process and what paints I used for it etc.
But....... I have some pics to add.

Quick pic update, this is the biker boss's bike. The others are all base coated with the airbrush highlights and are awaiting the silver stage before they each get an oil wash. Will update further pics tomorrow as I have a days painting planned so hope to get a fair bit done on them.

Really awesome work Drachenfels!
I echo the comments regarding your warbosses' armour, really great job. Lovely choice of colour and nicely highlighted.
Your looted trucks are looking fantastic! So Orky! And those ARE the best Ork bikes I have ever seen, hands down.
I would happily receive a Waaagh! from them.
