I'm a huge 'Journey to the West' fangirl, and have been waiting for this to go live for months.

I really wish the Resin figures weren't so expensive though. :/

I love Journey to the West! But not those ridonkulous resin prices. The plastics should be just fine for all of my purposes... and I suspect retail will see a significant discount on the price at some point.

Glad they are using a mix of hard and soft plastics and not just going with the easy/cheaper option of all soft.

Resin option might be a better option once it hits more unlocks, too expensive for now.

I'm going plastic to start with, but may switch over to resin. If they keep adding free unlocks, the value will get too good to miss.

Also, there are some images late in the video of some very cool concept artwork. Looks like they're saving some amazing stuff for later in the campaign. Between this, KDM, and Darklands, I think we are seeing a new era of tabletop gaming.

I'd been looking forward to this one.

My only real beef is the 54mm scale, but outside of the monk that shouldn't be a huge issue. Most of these guys are gods or demons, so they don't necessarily have to be "human" sized around 28-30mm.

The rules snippets we've seen look pretty solid. Hopefully they put the rules up before things are over.

Backers, some of you have asked for more Add-Ons, specifically, the T-Shirts and Art Book. Here you go. These T-shirts are Kickstarter Exclusives. We will not be selling these items after the Kickstarter campaign is complete. There will be a survey after the Kickstarter is closed to confirm the style and size of the T-shirt you want to add to your rewards. Sizes are S-XL.

Full color Art Booklet. This beautiful booklet contains many full color images describing the creation of Journey: Wrath of Demons. It is subject to change, but the current draft is a soft cover, A5 booklet, about 15 pages long. It is also a Kickstarter Exclusive. We will not be selling these items after the Kickstarter campaign is complete

Now that we have these extra Add-Ons and more stretch goals unlocked, we have updated the front page to make it easier to find this information.

Want to let everyone know that you have started this Journey? Why not update your avatar with one of these great images?

If you want to use these outside of Kickstarter, please do! The more people that know about Journey, the greater the game will become.

Many of you experienced backers already know how to set your avatar. If you have never done it before, here are some brief instructions.

Start by saving the image you want to use to your PC. Right click on the image you like and pick the menu entry for saving images (in Chrome, that is “Save Image As…”, in IE it is “Save Picture As…”). Remember the name and location of the jpg file.

In Kickstarter, edit your settings. Open the menu in the top right corner, the one that says “Me”. Click “Edit Settings” on the left-hand side. Once your settings are displayed, you can see your existing avatar on the right. Click the Upload button on the far right and select the jpg you saved in the first step.

Give Kickstarter a few seconds to update. Your avatar will show everyone you are with us on our Journey!

A Bigger Band

Did you think the Soul Hunters were more Demons? Guess again! The Pilgrims are not alone in their fight against the Demons and when the Pilgrims are powerful enough, they can summon the Soul Hunters to aid them in their fight.

However, this is not a simple decision. Soul Hunters are fierce fighters but they slaughter their Demon victims and steal their Souls. The Pilgrims will receive Bad Karma for every Soul Hunter kill. Is it worth the risk to summon a Soul Hunter’s aid?

Here you can see the concept art for Garvok, by Adrian Smith, one of the many talented artists working with us on Journey.

You have now unlocked Soul Hunter Garvok, as an optional resin Add-On for $20. The miniature includes all game cards to fully integrate him into the game. Garvok is a unique creature, so you need at most one miniature for game play. This Add-On is completely optional and is not required to play Journey: Wrath of Demons.

Okay, back to Boxed Game Upgrades. If we can get to $90,000, we will give out another miniature:

PP style plastic is ok for large organic shapes (like PP's large warbeasts) but sucks for fine details and any thin parts. This is why Sedition Wars didn't work (small scale, lots of fine detail).

I thought they said they'd be going the Wrath of Kings route, using a mixture of different materials depending on what was being cast.

Seeing as how we don't have any Wrath of Kings figures to look to for a comparison, we'll just have to go by word of mouth from GenCon and the people who demoed the game there.

Didn't care for the design of the Soul Hunter (hopefully the figures fares better) but the new demon looks nice.

Considering these guys are all supposed to be 54mm on average, those are going to be some big chunky demons hopefully.

So you have a chance to see our resin miniatures. Here is some information about another facet of Journey, the game play.

We will be giving out more information via game play videos in the early part of this Kickstarter. These videos have been recorded, we are just finishing the production now, it will not take long. We have been play testing the rules and are in the final stages of documenting them in precise, simple, English. This task is not trivial. Even if the rules are good, a badly written rulebook will ruin the game. We will only share the rules when we are convinced they are ready. We also have more updates planned that will show other components in more detail, for example the tiles and tokens, and the rule book.

I'll second watching that Throne of Angels video.

I too had some serious concerns about plastic quality.

Those Wrath of Kings are NOT board game pieces thankfully. They look like definite tabletop quality figures. The detail looked nice, figures looked well cast- I'm really looking forward to these figures now.

I'm also looking forward to seeing just how big this new demon in Journey will be compared to his demonic cohorts.

I wonder if we'll see any of the underwater Dragon Kings. I vaguely remember Monkey diving into the ocean and causing trouble with those dudes.

Or maybe I'm just thinking of Urashimataro.

Zing Yau Breaks through the Seal
6 comments

Great news! The Pledge Total had reached 6 figures. Now things are getting serious for Tripitaka and his Band.

When the underworld seal was broken, it was not just the Bull Demon Clan that broke through to the mortal plane. Zing Yau is the first of the independent Demons we want to add to Journey: Wrath of Demons. This addition not only includes the plastic miniature based on the fine art work of A.J. Manzanedo, but everything you need to use Zing Yau in the game, Profile Sheets, Demon Cards, etc.

Most backers will be getting Zing Yau as a free Boxed Game Upgrade, but we are also adding him to the Add-On list as well. Any of you can get more plastic Zing Yau miniatures for $5 each or add resin miniatures to your rewards by increasing your pledge by $20. The Add-Ons come with all game cards too. The Zing Yau Demon is not a unique character and you could pledge for multiple copies and have many roaming the game world at once. But the game plays fine with just the one free Yau!

Want more freebies? Okay, more Collectors Upgrades at $110,000. Two decorative scripture tubes to use as the Sutras objectives in the game. These replace color card tokens.

the way this one is moving, that resin option might not be a bad thing by the end...

Update #12

Game Contents

Backers, here is some more information about the game. This is a hard update to write, because the rewards change with every stretch goal. We’ll start with the core game that we planned for the $55,000 funding pledge and try to make it clear what bonus items have been added already. As well as listing the contents, we’ll describe the miniatures some more. Let’s start with the box! It will be 30cm by 30cm by 30cm in size and will weigh about 5-6lbs. This is a sizeable game. First the plastic miniatures list. The core box started at 33 miniatures:

• 4 Pilgrims: The Monkey King, Tripitaka, Cho Hakkai, Monk Sha

• 3 Demon Lords: Koorogg the Bull Demon King, Yazuiji the Empress Iron Fan, Kogaiji (Koorogg’s son)

• 2 Borrack Bull Generals

• 3 Boof Bullserkers

• 5 Bharhaz Bull Archers

• 15 Berrok Bull Warriors (1 pose but two weapons)

• 1 Kei Lun Heavenly Creature

These miniatures are made from ABS and PVC. These two plastics have different properties and allow us to create the best results with thin and thick parts of the miniature. We can show pictures of the resin minis so you can see what the sculpts look like. We will show pre-production plastic minis as soon as we have them, but we know what the factory is capable of and we’re demanding high quality plastic minis for this game. As a reference, look at the 1/35 military line from Dragon, there are many reviews by real customers on the web.

The smallest base is one square on the map tiles, so 30mm by 30mm for Tripitaka. The largest base is 4 squares, 60mm by 60mm for Kei Lun. Measuring from base to eye level, the Tripitaka miniature is small at 45mm, The Bull Demon King is larger, 90mm, and the Heavenly Creatures are just huge, 130mm for Kei Lun. Did I just say “Heavenly Creatures”? That was supposed to be secret! We have already unlocked more miniatures. At the pledge total of $100K, backers getting the Boxed Game Upgrades will also get:

• +1 Borrack Bull General

• +2 Bharhaz Bull Archers

• +4 Berrok Bull Warriors

• +1 Zing Yau

But the game is far more than just the miniatures:

• 6 Custom Dice

• 9 Single-Sided Map Tiles

• 4 Double-Sided Bridges Tiles

• 10 Double-Sided Door Tokens

• 12 Profile Sheets, one for each type of miniature

• 40 Pilgrim Skill Cards

• 50 Demon Cards

• 1 Fortune Spinner

• 80 Fortune/Misfortune Cards

• 20 Ongoing Condition Cards

• 35 Objective Tokens (10 Victims, 10 Sutras, 10 Mystical Boxes, 5 Water Wells)

• 5 Demon Gate Tokens

• 4 Initiative Tokens

All miniatures released in the stretch goals are supplied with all the cards you need to play them. For example, the new independent Demon Zing Yau comes with his Profile Sheet and extra Demon Cards. This means that the above list will also change as we unlock stretch goals. Of course, future Boxed Game Upgrades will change this list too. We are making miniature versions of some tokens. Different quests use different numbers of objectives. It is impossible to given firm numbers right now, as balancing the Quests will be the final task, but typical games use 4 Sutras Tokens and 6 Mystical Boxes. You can always mix card tokens and minis, perhaps using minis near the Pilgrims current location. There will be more detailed information on these other game components as the campaign continues. The game is in the final stages of development, so the contents are still subject to change. All miniatures in the core game are supplied unpainted.

Update #14 Oct 20, 2013
Our Game Plan
Comment Like
First of all, thanks to everyone who has supported our project! The opening days have unlocked 6 stretch goals, that’s great!
There have been questions about us releasing both plastic and resin versions of many of our sculpts. We want to share a little information about the industry and our plans with you now, to help you understand where we are going and what we are thinking.

There are two expensive steps in creating plastic miniatures, making the sculpt and tooling the steel mold. Making resin miniatures is time consuming, but the original sculpt is the only expensive part. If we first have one stretch goals to raise money for the sculpt, we can start by releasing the resin figures and then if we have a second stretch goal for the mold, we can pay for the tooling and create the plastics. An alternative would be one larger stretch goal to fund them both, but it’s fun to see smaller stretch goals getting unlocked quickly.

We have to take these costs into account and plan each stretch goal carefully. It has always been our intention to make as many of these miniatures (both figures and scenery) in resin and plastic, so long as there is enough demand. For example, you have seen that all of the core game minis are made in both materials and the Zing Yau Demon stretch goal was introduced as plastic with a resin Add-On. For some upcoming new items, we will split the stretch goals into two parts and you will see one come earlier and one later. We also plan Add-On bundles for the plastic items - plastics are easier to mass produce - but these will be announced later when more molds are ready. There will be more Collectors Upgrades too, including resin demons. Sweet!

This all sounds like good news, but there is never good news without bad. A mix of plastic and resin stretch goals are coming, but the pledge total needs to be a little higher before we announce lots of plastic. Anything you can do to share our project, on your Facebook page, create a buzz on BGG, conversations in your local game store, updates on your blogs will help us get to those higher numbers. They are easily within reach, we are not talking millions.

We will also show a little more information about future stretch goals (check out the front page now). We have a long list of goals planned, and we do change the order based on your feedback and excitement. We do not want to lock down the order completely, but it’s fun to talk about what is coming. We think we have a great product that will be appreciated by two related groups, board gamers and miniature collectors/painters. Help us turn this into a reality!

Scripture Boxes Released!

Welcome new backers! Thanks existing backers! Even though we are in the slower middle stretch, it’s great to see the total moving along. And to see more than 750 backers is great news.

With $110,000 under our belt, the resin Sutras objective markers are unlocked. These can replace the card tokens during the game, giving your tabletop a more 3D feel. We will also add these markers to the Add-Ons category, so anyone can get more items for a $3 increase in the pledge. The Sutras are quest objectives that need to be collected by the Pilgrims, you might use about 4 Sutras in typical quests. According to the lore of the game, if the missing pieces of the Sutras can be collected and assembled, Tripitaka will learn how to seal the Demons back in the underworld permanently. But if the Pilgrims cannot find all the pieces, well, let’s say it’s not good for mankind.

What’s next for our intrepid band of travelers? A KS Exclusive! This Boxed Game Upgrade provides a unique skill card for each Pilgrim.

The Journey Rulebook
2 comments

Having good rules is one thing, but explaining them clearly in a rulebook is another. We are hoping the Journey rulebook will be more than clear, it will also be beautiful.

The art of Journey is an important part of the game, in the miniatures and in the map tiles for example, but the rulebook gives us another opportunity to deliver a stunning component. We understand that different people learn in different ways, so the book will include simple text explanations, many diagrams and specific real-world examples. All this will be done in full color with game background interspersed throughout.

It’s an A4 book (similar to US Letter), printed on wood-free paper. It is only an estimate at the moment, but we are thinking it will be about 48 pages. Here are some early work in progress images.

Really nice looking components.

Hope this game gets a bit more exposure.

Is it the lack of draft rules that seems to be holding people back, or the fact that it isn't generic fantasy?

I had mentioned it in the comments, but all those bull demons would make excellent rank and file minotaurs.

If they're all 54mm at average, those are going to be some chunky figures to fling around the table.

There are diverse card effects, including dice bonuses, dice re-rolls, healing, extra actions and even altering the behavior of the Demons. Some cards require the Pilgrims to act together. Some bend the rules in unique ways, such as Monkey’s Shadow Walk, allowing him to pass through obstructions. These cards are in short supply and many are one time use, so they are powerful, but must be managed carefully. They make for very tactical play.

With this goal, we will give each of the Pilgrims a new Skill Card. That’s not a re-print of an existing card, we are making new special rules for these 4 cards. These will be KS Exclusives, meaning we will not sell the cards after the KS is completed (clearly, they will not be in the retail game). Backers show us extraordinary support and want to give out something special from time to time.

Moving on the $130,000 goal, we have a Collectors Upgrade. Some of you guessed this was coming in your comments: resin Zing Yau Demon spawning in pairs!

Update #18

Oct 23, 2013
The Limited Time Bonus
7 comments

Hello backers. You have lots of questions, but we can put one to rest. What is the mystery Limited Time Bonus?

It takes some nerve to pledge a chunk of your money to a couple of strangers running a new company. We know that and we really appreciate it. There are some potential backers out there, watching our progress or planning to come back near the end to see what opened up. That’s a fine strategy and we respect it. But we really are grateful to backers that took the plunge and supported us in the early part of the campaign. As well as saying thank you, we’re giving some of the backers that made their first pledge before the time limit, one free copy of this add-on.

When is the time limit? Three days after the Limited Time Bonus Stretch Goal is unlocked. Not a fixed date, but it’s coming soon. Current backers have already made the deadline, and anyone on the fence can beat the deadline too, if they are quick. We’ll give you some reminders, don’t worry.

Who gets it? Well, it’s a resin Add-On, so we’re giving it to backers receiving Collectors Upgrades. If you are receiving Collectors Upgrades at the end of the campaign, and you made your pledge before the time limit, you will get this resin Add-On mini for free.

What about backers getting just the Boxed Game Upgrades? This Add-On is resin only at the moment, so we can’t give you a free plastic mini yet. How about we make a deal? If we unlock the plastic version of this mini later in the campaign (we want to), then we will also give a free plastic mini to all backers that qualify for Boxed Game Upgrades at the end of the campaign, so long as the pledge was in before the time limit. No double dipping this time, you only get one free mini, plastic or resin.

What is the mini? Hey, we can’t give out too much information ;-)

Update #19

Oct 24, 2013
Resin Zing Yau
4 comments

So now we have our old friend Zing Yau returning as 2 resin miniatures, free to backers receiving the Collectors Upgrades. This upgrade comes with all cards required to use the miniatures in the game.

Let’s be clear. Those of you getting Boxed Game Upgrades already get one plastic Zing Yau (and cards). Those of you getting Collectors Upgrades will now get two resin minis. Those of you getting both groups of upgrades will get both of these, 1 plastic + 2 resin minis. If you are careful, you can certainly use the resin minis in the game, or you can give them your best paint jobs and display them in your miniatures cabinet – and just play with the plastic one.

We really hope backers getting Collectors Upgrades enjoy this first resin Demon upgrade. We’ve given out 8 plastic minis already, so the Collectors Upgrades were lagging behind a little. Let’s hope this pair of Zing Yaus gets the Collectors Upgrades caught up. Just don’t expect 2 resin minis every time!

Our march continues onwards. Zing Yau is not the only type of Yau Demon. It’s time for another Boxed Game Upgrade, Jing Yau.

Limited Time Bonus

Don’t forget the Limited Time Bonus. The Limited Time Bonus will unlock soon and the 3 day countdown will begin. If you are a non-backer who is checking our progress, you’d better make your pledge soon. See Update #18 for full details.

Update #20 Oct 24, 2013
Game World

The world of Journey starts with our Map Tiles, wonderfully illustrated by Henning Ludvigsen.

Map Tiles are the basis for the game board in Journey, square boards that are arranged differently in each Quest. Each Map Tile portrays one specific area that the Pilgrims encounter. If you only have a tabletop, it’s hard to depict a journey across China, but we think the dramatic changes in scenery from one tile to the next really give the impression of an epic journey. As well as the Map Tiles, we have Bridge Tiles, small strips that separate one Map Tile from its neighbour. Miniatures can only cross from one Map Tile to the next via the actual bridges on the Bridge Tiles.

Physically, the Map Tiles are 30cm (approximately 12”) square, which creates quite a large board once you assemble a few. We are currently looking at 2mm thick stock with the printing on semi-gloss, textured paper. They will be single-sided, so that all the boards can be used together. There are 9 Map Tiles in the base game, and 4 double-sided Bridge Tiles.

But we shouldn’t tell you that the boards look good, we should show you. The high-res links look even better than the pictures we can embed here.

Hi-res link to Map Tile A

Hi-res link to Map TIle G

Here is one more link for you, to the ART of Henning Ludvigsen.

More Demons: Jing Yau

You just keep knocking down Stretch Goals as fast as we can create them!

Unlocking Jing Yau lets us show you more art from the highly talented A.J. Manzanedo, it has been an honor to work with him. Here is his stunning inspiration for the Jing Yau miniature, our second Independent Demon:

You have unlocked another free upgrade for most backers! All backers whose rewards include the Boxed Game Upgrades will receive two more free plastic miniatures and all cards necessary to add Jing Yau to the game. Like his counterpart Yau demon, Jing Yau is not unique and you can field as many as you want. They are also available as Add-Ons, for a $15 pledge increase for resin and $4 pledge increase for plastic. That price is each. Don’t worry, Jing Yau is completely optional. You do not have to get the Add-Ons.

Now we can reveal the time limited bonus miniature! Some backers did indeed see a color image of this character flash past in the video. Captain Xi Fung, the Soul Hunter! See update #8 for an introduction to the Soul Hunters. This stretch goal is a resin Add-On, but if you place your pledge before the time limit, you may get it for free. See Update #18. Xi Fung is available in resin at the moment but we hope to convert the master sculpt to a steel mold in a future Stretch Goal, to make plastic versions. Stay with us!

Update #22 Oct 25, 2013
The Clock Starts Now!

We hoped people would have more time to see the information about the Time Limit, but you guys really rushed us through this milestone! It feels great to have so much support.

First, the simple stuff. This beautiful resin miniature is again based on the fine art of Adrian Smith. We are lucky to be working with such a talented team.

Like Soul Hunter Garvok, Captain Xi Fung can be summoned to aid the Pilgrims. But aid might not be the right word. The bad karma he generates might be more hardship than benefit.

For an optional $15 increase to your pledge, this resin miniature is supplied with all the cards required to play the game. He is a unique character, so you only need one miniature if you want to add Xi Fung to the game. As with all Add-Ons, Xi Fung is not required and Journey can be enjoyed without this extra dimension.

Now it gets a little more complex! The 3 day count down has begun. At Monday, 28 October, 21:30 Eastern time,UTC-4hrs, we will save a list of all the current backers. If you are on the list – if you pledge before the deadline – and at the end of the project you are eligible for Collectors Upgrades, you will get a free resin Xi Fung mini, with game cards.

If you are on the list, and you are eligible for Boxed Game Upgrades AND we unlock the plastic Xi Fung, you will get a free plastic Xi Fung. Molds for plastic minis are expensive and we need the pledge total to increase before we can commit to this mold. But it is in our stretch goal list and with only a little luck, it will be unlocked. Backers will only receive one free Xi Fung, either resin or plastic, not both.

Up next, we have custom Journey Marshmallows ;-).

Hmmmm.... Marshamallows....

On a serious note, if any Dakka people plan on dropping their earlybird pledges, let me know please, I would love to snag one; either regular or resin/collectors.

Game Play Update #2 – Pilgrim Profile Sheets
4 comments Like 11 likes
We know many of you are waiting for more information about the rules. Here is our plan. Over the next four weeks, we intend to share a solid understanding of how the game is played. We will not be able to show you the finished rulebook during this campaign, but we hope you will all understand the game before the campaign closes.

We do have rules, we have played and play tested the game. But we do not have all the text, examples and graphics for the rulebook written yet. We want to explain the rules accurately, with examples, and hopefully without ambiguity and omission. This is not trivial and we are not rushing to get the rulebook finished during this campaign. It needs more care and attention than we can give it while we run this Kickstarter and it is important that the first version you see is good. We will have a Journey website with forums and we will show the rulebook to backers before it is finalised. This feedback will help us convert a good version of the rulebook into a great version.

There is a lot of information to share. The rulebook will be over 40 pages with all the graphical examples and back story. We will share the information in manageable pieces, starting with a short video and following that with more in depth text updates. We have 6 videos and some additional updates that will be text and graphics only. In all of the Game Play Updates and the videos we are showing prototype cards and other play aids. The material is subject to change as we settle on consistent terminology and precise wording. We will try to move more information out of the rulebook and on to the cards. Don’t worry, we’ll tweak the fonts and layout before the end. However, everything we show you is close to what you will get in the game. Enough talk! Here’s the video:

We started the game information in Update #10 with the overview. If you want to refresh your memory, here is the update:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1588487845/journey-wrath-of-demons/posts/633247

Pilgrim Profile Sheets

Pilgrim Profile Sheets Pilgrim Profile Sheets contain important information for playing each Pilgrim. The goal is that you can play off the sheet, not out of the rulebook. Some stats change during the game, such as Health Points, Karma and Chi, and the Profile Sheet can track this. There are wheels for some stats and sliders for others.

Here is the front of the Monkey King’s Profile Sheet:

This shows some fixed attributes:

MV: The movement points (move one square forwards or turn for one point).

ATT: The number and type of dice for your attack.

DF: The number of defense dice the Pilgrim rolls.

Attack and defense dice rolls will make more sense once you see the next video!

Some stats change during the Quest:

Chi is spent to activate some of the Condition Cards and is recovered by resting.

Bad Karma is tracked with a wheel. You get Bad Karma for killing Demons. If you defeat a Demon, killing it is automatic, if you can risk accumulating the Bad Karma. You can see that as Monkey gets more Bad Karma, his movement is reduced and then his attack range is reduced.

Good Karma is also tracked with a wheel. You get Good Karma for cleansing Demons’ souls. More on this later!

Health Points are common to many games. Lose all your health and you are dead! The attacking update will make it clear how you lose health in an attack, but there are other ways as well. Don’t step on the lava!

The back of the card has useful information too:

There is some flavor text, of course, but the attack range icon is the important thing. Monkey can select one target standing in the red zone, i.e. two squares in front, behind and to either side. Monkey cannot attack diagonally – you have to approach the Demons carefully to get into fighting position.

Demons have profile sheets too, but they are a little simpler because there are no tracking wheels. If a statistic is missing, then it does not apply to the miniature at all. So if there is no defense statistic shown for a bullheaded Bull Demon, you know it does not make any defense rolls.

Our next rules update will show more details of the Map Tiles and then we have a video update for Movement.

Marshmallows are in, here is the latest update.

Update #24 Oct 27, 2013
KS Exclusive Custom Custom Dice!
10 comments Like 11 likes
Once again, we’ve pushed forwards to another goal!

Journey does not need hundreds of dice to play the game and for almost every roll you only need the dice in the box. But there a few occasions, for example with special skill cards, when you need extra dice. It’s easier to make these rolls if you have a few more dice in your hand.

Journey already comes with custom dice, which we will describe soon. We have made a special custom version of the custom dice as an exclusive bonus for everyone getting Boxed Game Upgrades. The regular dice are colored and these exclusive dice are reversed, with the ink being the color of the regular dice. We hope you like them and that you make all your critical rolls!

No rest for the weary. Next we move on to a new resin Demon, as a Collectors Upgrade. Some backers thought the silhouette might be one of the female demons from the video, but that could not be further from the truth. Let us introduce Ugragosa, the Centipede Demon!

A centipede demon? I wonder how that's going to look; colored me intrigued.

Game Play Update #3 – Map Tile Rules
4 comments Like 7 likes
We showed you the art and some production details about the Map Tiles. Here’s some game play information. We will convert this to precise rules legalese in the rule book, but this should give you a good idea of how the Map Tiles play an active role in the game. You don’t simply move around each square.

Many games have a top down 3D board and there is a common problem. What exactly does the fancy board mean? Where does one feature start and one end? Does that little graphic just poking out there really mean that this whole square is a wall? That square has a chair drawn on it, is that higher ground? Etc, etc.

We have avoided all these problems by outlining key features of the board in color. We did not show this on the Map Tile art before, so take another look now we have added these lines and boxes.

Here's the hi-res link shows the Map Tile more clearly.

And this one:

Here's the hi-res link.

The colored lines make it really clear how the features affect the game and exactly where the feature is on the map. No more arguing about that little bump that sticks out. So what do these lines mean?

Green Lines. You can’t move through a feature marked by a green line and you can’t draw line of sight across one of these lines. These lines are used on features like walls and other impenetrable obstacles. So how do you get inside the buildings or courtyards? We have many types of tokens to place on the tiles, including the door tokens. The doors are placed in different positions from one Quest to another, adding more variety to the game.

Red Lines. These mark the squares that damage the Pilgrims but do not damage the Demons. Pilgrims take one point of damage every time they enter one of these squares or if they are stationary on the square for a full turn, for example if they stop moving to attack. Worse than stepping on a crack!

Yellow Lines. These show defensive features. When characters that use the defense dice are here, they get a +1 bonus to defense. This will make more sense once we post the attacking video (attack and defense rolls are a quick opposed dice mechanic for figuring damage).

Blue Lines. These surround areas that slow the Pilgrims down, for example, rivers and marshy ground. Demons are too strong to be impeded by these features, but Pilgrims pay 2 movement points for a blue square not 1.

We have said we are showing you work in progress material in these game play updates. We are currently optimizing the colored lines, the thickness, color, and sharpness of the edges, etc, so they are clear, but do not interfere with the beautiful art that Henning Ludvigsen has created. They are prominent in these images so that you can see what we are talking about.

If you missed Game Play Update #2, on the Profile Sheets, click here.

I'm not sure how I feel about the lines, it make sense in their context but it just breaks up the flow of the board. I really liked how Tannhauser handled this issue with their circles and color coding.

Coloured lines seem like a shame on such nicely rendered boards. A water mark type symbol on relevant squares would be a little more elegant, but would be obscured by models.

I am interested....but have Myth and KD:M coming down the pipe, which need to be worked in to my current boardgame schedule of never playing any board games at all.

Here’s trouble! Our most terrifying miniature so far, Ugragosa, the Centipede Demon, with terrific art provided by A.J. Manzanedo. Ugragosa is quite large, 3 squares long on the board. More exciting news, this miniature is a Kickstarter Exclusive. We think it is sure to be popular. He is also a sneak peek of the far future, but we won’t say any more on that subject.

Ugragosa is a unique Independent Demon. Also a powerful and horrific Independent Demon. Lucky backers getting the Collectors Upgrades will receive this beautiful resin miniature with all the cards required for game play, and he’s in the Add-On list for $20. Of course, Ugragosa is optional, but think very carefully before you pass. Ugragosa is one of our favorites, for painting and because he makes the game so tough!

On deck, more scenery. A pair of Demon Spawning Gates.

Man, I really like the concept art for Ugragosa, something you just don't normally see (but I can easily see in KD:M). The collectors edition just keeps getting harder to resist with the add-ons they are getting. Also the backers are posting some nice suggestions for alternatives to the lines; print on both sides, one with lines and one without and another suggestion of having a mission briefing/rear of the rule book. Course reading the comments made me remeber I need to pull Hybrid out and work on it.

Thanks, backers. We had a very good weekend, even though some people say weekends are slow on Kickstarter. There’s no stopping you guys. And we feel gratified by the all compliments on the campaign. This really is our first KS and sometimes it feels totally out of control. Like this weekend! Yesterday was our best day since the opening rush.

You unlocked the Demon Spawning Gates very quickly! We have received many compliments for them, so Hon is going to try to paint some up, and show you a picture soon. No promises though, he is also trying to eat and sleep, but that is not going very well. Backers getting Collectors Upgrades will get two resin gate markers for free. They are on the Add-On list, at $3 for each. You know the drill, just up your pledge if you want an Add-On and we’ll check with you at the end of the project, to see exactly what you want. More details in the FAQ.

Demon Spawning Gates can be used to replace the color card tokens in the box during the game, so they are optional. We’ll explain the rules for spawning Demons soon, but clearly, these tokens or markers are used to indicate where new Demons appear on the map. Six gates is plenty.

What’s next? A Boxed Game Upgrade, 4 Initiative Tokens.

Update #28 Oct 28, 2013
The Clock Runs Down
6 comments Like 9 likes
Thank you for joining this project at the start! Supporting us now and pushing through these Stretch Goals is important to us.

The deadline for the Time Limited Bonus has now ended. We know exactly who made their pledges before this deadline. Everyone who has pledged already could be getting a free miniature (with full game cards) to say thank you.

We will check your rewards at the end of the project. If you are getting Collectors Upgrade at the end of the project (and you pledged before the deadline) you will get a resin version of the Captain Xi Fung miniature. So if you have pledged already for Single Journey and you upgrade to Premium next week and stay there until the end, you get the resin miniature.

What about early backers that just want the game in plastic? If the plastic version is opened by a future Stretch Goal, we will give backers who end up getting just the Box Game Upgrades (so long as they pledged early) a plastic Xi Fung for free. Are we certain we can make the plastic Xi Fung? No. The pledges could stop today. Even The Monkey King cannot see the future. But this stretch has been scheduled and if the total continues to increase at this steady rate, the goal will unlock.

No double dipping, we’re afraid. You get at most one of these minis as a gift.

We are doing this to reward backers that took a risk supporting us, not to exclude the later backers. Soul Hunter Captain Xi Fung will now be shown on the Add-On list just like normal and any new backers can pick one up just like any other Add-On. Don’t forget if you are getting a free Captain Xi Fung, he is unique, so you probably don’t want to pledge for this Add-On.

Summary

To get a free resin Captain Xi Fung you must:

• Have made your pledge before this update was posted.

• Receive Collectors Upgrades when the Kickstarter closes.

To get a free plastic Captain Xi Fung you must:

• Have made your pledge before this update was posted.

• The plastic Captain Xi Fung Stretch Goal must unlock, sometime in the future.

• Receive Boxed Game Upgrades when the Kickstarter closes.

And Collectors Upgrade backers only get the resin miniature free, not both miniatures.

I appreciate them posting a summary and trying to make sure all is clear after reading some poor communication from other kickstarters...

I have really liked how they have run this KS. I wish I had the money to try to get into this one, but with MYTH on its way, I don't have much room for 'yet another board game'.

:(

I may get this for the minis alone at the end.

I know what you mean; I keep telling myself I'm getting this to help a friend who has become a bit of a shut-in and loves the Monkey King because of a show from his youth. I'm hoping this will help me lure him out f his self imposed exile.

Hey everybody, it's a game play update going into the dice; no normal d6 for you.
Update #29 Oct 29, 2013
Game Play Update #4 – Custom Dice
8 comments Like 11 likes
Backers! A short rules update today, prompted by some questions on the white dice.

We have said from the start that Journey uses custom dice. They are engraved, not stenciled, and the numbers have a clear Chinese look to them, to strengthen the thematic feel. You might be in your dining room, but we want you to forget that completely.

Some games, 5mm scale war games for example, have a large number of dice to roll and count. Journey is the opposite, it has very few dice. Game play is not interrupted by counting out the dice you need, trying to roll them without disturbing the board, and then counting the hits. We wanted to keep the game play fast and furious.

Many games have custom dice, where the high number is an in-game symbol. That is not what we mean by custom dice: the six sided Journey dice are not numbered 1-6. Further, our dice have different numbering from each other, which is why we talk so specifically about Attack Dice, Defense Dice, Pilgrim Dice and Demon Dice (yes, we can say Pilgrim Dice now that you are getting two, due to the KS Exclusive Boxed Game Upgrade).

Red Attack Dice Numbering: X, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3.

Blue Defense Dice Numbering: X, 1, 1, 1, 2, 3.

White Pilgrim Dice Numbering: X, X, 1, 1, 2, 3.

Black Demon Dice Numbering: X, X, 1, 1, 2, 3.

What are the X’s? If you are rolling numbers, the X is 0. So a 2 dice attack roll of (X & 2) is a total of 2. If you are rolling for success or failure, X is failure, you will see this on some skill cards. Pretty simple, X’s are bad.

When do you use the various dice? Attack and Defense dice are opposed dice rolls made during attacks, fully explained in the Attacking Video Update. The Pilgrim and Demon dice are used in special situations explained with the cards. For example, Tripitaka’s Profile Sheet says his attack includes a White Pilgrim die and his Weapon Card, the Pewter Staff, shows how to interpret the dice result. In this case, rolls of 1 and 2 give you one extra point of damage, a roll of 3 gives you 2 extra Damage. X gives you no extra damage. Poor Tripitaka is not the best Pilgrim for combat. If you look back at Video 1, you can see The Monkey King’s Attack and Weapon card.

The Pilgrim Die is also used during the Cleansing Ritual and for many of the Pilgrim Skill Cards too. The Demon Die is very similar and is referenced on the various Demon sheets and cards, but does not come into play so often, mainly with the Boss Demons. If this is the first rules update you have seen, you can click here to find the previous one.

Journey: Wrath of Demons by Marrow @ $217K - New Game Cards @ $220K @ 2013/10/29 15:38:15

Post by: Sway

This game is quickly turning into a Kingdom Death: Monster scenario for me. Both games I backed initially to take advantage of early bird deals and because the models look fantastic. And then Kingdom Death kept me hooked with seriously intriguing game play. Journey looks to be doing the same thing so far, though I'll need to see more to be sure.

I am always happy to see custom dice. They let me control the odds a bit more and I really enjoy that. Plus it just feels cool to know you're rolling the "bad" or "good" dice and your odds adjust accordingly.

I would like to mention that I'm on the Pro Colored Lines team. As a backer of Sedition Wars, I've seen game tiles that put aesthetics over gameplay (and even those made some aesthetic compromises to improve gameplay) and they are honestly one of my biggest complaints about the game. If the tiles were on wood or plastic of some sort I would want them to look as nice as possible, but when it's just a typical game board, I want them to be functional.

Q0rbin has blessed his fellow Pilgrims with not one, but TWO updates!

Update #30

Show Some Initiative
15 comments

We are still moving forwards!

The pledge total of $190K unlocks the Initiative Tokens upgrade. Here’s a micro rules update: There are times when the turn order is not totally obvious. For example, if you are playing a two player game and controlling two Pilgrims each, which of your two Pilgrims moves first? There is no need to remember, the Initiative Tokens will remind you. They are marked 1-4 to show the turn order and are placed next to each Pilgrim Sheet at the start of the game.

The game comes with card Initiative Tokens, this stretch goal converts from card to 3D tokens for all backers getting the Boxed Game Upgrade.

Onwards with another Boxed Game Upgrade. Because you asked for it, double-sided Map Tiles.

Game Play Update #5 – Movement
6 comments

Welcome to another rules update. Thank you for the reception these updates are getting. We hope you can see that by the end of the project you will know quite a lot about the game.

So here is the movement video, it’s pretty simple really:

https://d2pq0u4uni88oo.cloudfront.net/assets/001/257/329/18936142d9dbe5c57955ec8b7add4894_h264_high.mp4

But not so simple that we could get it right! Yes, movement is forwards, in the direction you are facing. Did you spot the deliberate errors? There is no sideways or diagonal movement! You will have to forgive the hands of our video team for making a few missteps. Okay, back to the explanation. Each turn, Pilgrims get 2 Action Points that can be spent on any actions from this list:

Move
Attack
Search
Break Down a Door
Rest (requires 2 action points)

Demons get 2 Action Points, but a shorter list of options. You can pick any of these, in any order, even taking the same action twice. We are only going to explain Movement in this update. Pilgrims and Demons move the same way.

Let’s start with a little background. Journey is a board game, not a table top war game and movement is quite different between these genres. Board game movement is normally constrained to the squares on the board. No measuring, no arguing about taking that extra ½ cm to get into cover, but it can be a little artificial. Journey is not a simulation of battle, it’s a fast paced board game. Even inside the board game genre there are differences. Some board games have facing, some don’t, some have diagonal movement, some don’t.

Journey has a very simple movement system. On the Profile Sheet you will be given a number of movement points. Spend one movement point to move one square forwards, in the direction you are facing. Spend one movement point to turn by 90º. You can mix stepping forwards and turning any way you want to. Specifically, so long as you have the movement points to spend, you can turn as many times as you want.

Some miniatures are on rectangular bases. When they turn, keep one square still and rotate around that point. It is your choice which square is the pivot.

The board is covered in obstacles. At no point can any part of your base be in the same square as an obstacle. You can’t move through walls, etc, even if you do not step on the square.

If you take a double move in one turn, add all the movement points up and move it all together. So if your MV is 3, a double move lets you spend 6 movement points. That will let you travel further over slow terrain than taking 2 separate moves at MV 3 points each.

If your base is large and partly on a special board tile, partly on a normal tile, you still pay the penalty (one foot in the water? Movement is slowed). If many squares of your base are on the same type of special square, you only pay the penalty once (both feet in lava? Just one Health Point of damage).

It does get a little more complex, because the basic rules are overridden from time to time. Some Skill Cards and Karma Rewards give you extra movement points. Some board squares cost two movement points to enter (turning is still one point). Some Skill Cards allow you to pass through obstacles while the card is in effect. You will be given reminders about this – explicit instructions on the cards or colored boxes on the board, or something. We don’t want you flicking through the rulebook as you play.

Someone asked about moving the wide miniatures over the narrow bridges, but the bridges and doors are actually big enough to let all miniatures pass. No special rules are required.

What happens if you forget and make a sideways move? Nothing really. Monkey is the trickster god and he doesn’t like rules, either.

The next rules video will be attacking, perhaps the most important part of the game. We may post some other updates first.

Are you just joining us? We have more rules information posted here:

This is what I get for sleeping! And having two kids I have to get ready for school. I really like the fact that they listened to their pledgers request for double sided boards.

The movement stuff seems pretty traditional, nothing unusual; looking forward to the combat to see how it plays out.

As a small new games company, we need all the help we can get spreading the word. We are confident Journey stands up for itself, we just need gamers to look at it. Please take a few minutes to bump up our profile around the web. If any of you use these gaming sites, could you make a little noise occasionally, to support us?

You don’t need an account to recommend us, but there are a few fields to fill in. It takes 30 seconds if you have the KS page open for copy and pasting. If we can get on the top twenty list, that would be awesome! See what we did there?

DakkaDakka

DakkaDakka has a good thread going that has a lot of our updates copied already. Nice work, people!

Update #33

Trick or Treat

Treat! We can see the pledges people are making and many of you are really going beyond the call of duty to support us. We’d like to call all backers that pledge more than $320 (including shipping) Warrior Monks and give you a special avatar to use with pride:

See this update for instructions on setting your avatar.

What? That’s not much of a treat, you say? Egg our house, you say? Okay, all Warrior Monks get a free Jiangshi, a Chinese Zombie resin miniature, with all the game cards. So who gets this free miniature, exactly? If your pledge total, including the shipping, is $320 or above at the end of the campaign, you get it. So if you pledge for Deluxe Journey, you get it. If you pledge for the T-Shirt and add an awful lot of Add-Ons, you get it. It’s simply linked to the dollar total, not to your pledge type.

He is also available as an Add-On, $12 for a resin miniature. These are weak in the game, so you could have quite a few hopping around your boards at once. Yes, hopping. Rigor mortis gives Jiangshi a unique gait. They are a bit like vampires too, draining your life force once they get you.

So if a zombie horde would be good, $12 for resin minis could be a bit steep. How about we make them in plastic and offer a bundle? That’s right, plastic Jiangshi are unlocked now! The bundle price is $15 for 4 Jiangshi, coffin scenery marker and all necessary cards. One pack is good, two packs are double the fun!

Zombies come out at Halloween, but where do you find them? Cemeteries, of course. Henning Ludvigsen has created an eerie Chinese cemetery Map Tile as one of the nine tiles in the core game, which we would like to share with you now:

The high res image looks so much better, click here for a peek!

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WdxrJb8As_w/UmvPpc---9I/AAAAAAAAACA/rN6jkqCcWis/s1600/Map+D+Cemetary+WATERMARK+Post.jpg

Have fun on Halloween!

Q0rbin pleads for us to not succemb to the threat of...Zombies - but to keep up the good fight!

Same here, but I think I'll end up with an "Outlaw" on Brimstone and possibly move up from a "Journey" to a "Collector" here.

Another update from Q0rbin, fresh from the front.

Update #34 Oct 31, 2013
Double-Sided Map Tiles
7 comments Like 4 likes
The trek continues! $200K has such a nice ring to it.

The pledge total of $200K unlocks the double-sided Map Tiles Boxed Game Upgrade. By keeping the stretch goal list close to our chest, we can make small adjustments based on what backers are saying. So far, we have been running pretty close to plan, just swapping goals here and there, but this is a big change. It was suggested in the comments that we print the board art with the colored boxes on one side and without on the other. As you get the hang of the game, flip them over and play with no distractions from the lovely art by Henning Ludvigsen. If a new friend comes over, play on the color coded side for that night, so they can see what is going on. We like it! Thanks for the idea.

So, 9 Map Tiles, 9 unique maps, double sided with 2 slightly different versions of each map.

And next another scenery Add-On, real bridges. But there’s something more, we will offer them in plastic and resin!

Remember we said we would do the plastic Soul Hunter, Captain Xi Fung? Soon.

Update #35

Size Doesn’t Matter!

We have had many questions about the scale of the figures and we would like to show you the actual size, rather than talk about numbers.

Journey was developed as a standalone game, with physically imposing monsters. The Demons are supposed to look big, solid and threatening as they rush towards the Pilgrims. We are really pleased that people want to use our miniatures in other games, and we think this should be possible for some of the figures. The ones where the miniature is supposed to represent some large and terrifying monster.

So in this first picture, we can see that Tripitaka is quite large. We have shown pictures of him next to a ruler before, so no surprise here. We admit it would be hard to use Tripitaka in a 28mm game, but he is not the most reusable mini anyway.

On the other hand, we think the various demons could be used in many games where a striking monster is required. Take a look at the same shot with the Bull Warrior:

He’s a very solid Minotaur, but if you've ever been near a bull, you know those things are big.

Other miniatures are shown for comparison purposes only. Our lawyer has not seen this post, please don’t sue us.

Keep up the good fight, and fight with your Karma in mind.

Remember, Q0rbin is watching!

Outside of Trip (and maybe the soul hunters or the jiangshi) I don't see the scale being a big issue.

Everybody else is either a deity of some sort or a demon. Why would they need to be human scale at 30mm or whatever?

Those generic bull demons are going to make great proxy minotaurs should the occasion call for it, nevermind the bigger chunkier stuff like the centipede demon or the demon generals.

Update #36

Nov 2, 2013
Game Play Update #6 –Attacking
14 comments

So after all the stretch goals, giveaways and other updates, it’s time for more rules.

But first, great job backers spreading the word! You pushed us to #2 on the Kicktraq hot list. Awesome.

We know, we know, you want to see how attacking works, it’s a big part of the game. Did you read this intro or did you click play already?

https://d2pq0u4uni88oo.cloudfront.net/assets/001/271/464/b15438d6ba8f6d8ee75653a295cc0208_h264_high.mp4

So we want to keep the update short and simple and this is a big, important topic. Attacking is fairly uniform in the game, meaning a Demon makes an attack in pretty much the same way as a Pilgrim, but to keep the language simple and skip a few exceptions, we will talk specifically about Pilgrims attacking Demons here. Remember, you are learning more than just how Pilgrims attack.

We have shown some prototype cards in the video and these will change. We want more memorable abbreviations (CR for Cleanse Ritual, perhaps), and want more information on the cards (the karma values for killing).

Attacking is one of the Actions that the Pilgrims can choose. They have two Action Points (normally) and can spend all of them on Attack Actions if they have enough targets.

First, the Pilgrim picks a Demon to attack. The Attack Icon indicates which Demons will be in your range. There must be no obstacles between you and the Demon (the same obstacles that block your movement). All the Pilgrims have different attack patterns, making them different to play. Pilgrims only attack one target at a time, as stated on the Profile Sheet.

Do you have a valid target? Good, let’s attack it.

The Profile Sheet tells you what dice to roll under ATT. Use a certain number of red Attack Dice plus the Pilgrim Die for your weapon. Every Pilgrim has a different weapon and some roll a different number of Attack Dice (2 for Monkey, 1 for Tripitaka). The Weapon Card says how much damage is generated from the Pilgrim Die, we saw that in the Dice Update. Simply add the Attack Dice total to the weapon damage to see how much damage you do.

Bullheaded Bull Demons do not defend, so no Defense Dice and no Defense Results are used when Pilgrims attack a Demon. We will cover Defense in another update.

Remember, we said a lot of the game is driven from the cards. If you look at a Demon Profile Sheet, Demons have no Health Track to count down the damage, just a single Health Value. This is a reminder that you do not count off the damage you do to Demons. You must defeat them in one shot, or they just shrug off the hit. Is your damage equal to or greater than the Demon’s Health? If so, you defeat the Demon. If not, it is unscathed. Luckily for Monkey, he rolled 3 points of damage, plenty to defeat the Berrok, the weakest of the Bull Demons.

So, is that it? Not quite. Monkey’s target is defeated, not dead. Pilgrims are now faced with a choice. Kill the defeated Demon or start the Cleansing Ritual, to save the Demon’s soul.

Killing a defeated target is automatic, so it is an easy choice, but it comes with Bad Karma. Consult the Demon’s Profile Sheet and look up how much Bad Karma you receive. Adjust the Bad Karma wheel on your Pilgrim Profile Sheet. Get too much Bad Karma, and your game stats begin to suffer.

Or you can take the high road and try the Cleansing Ritual. It is part of the Attack Action and does not cost another Action Point, but the result is not automatic. Roll the white Pilgrim Die and see if you can equal or exceed the Cleanse Ritual value on the Demon Profile Sheet. In our example, Monkey rolled 3 and cleansed the Berrok’s soul. Instead of Bad Karma, he adds the Berrok’s Karma Value to his Good Karma wheel. If Monkey can get enough Good Karma, he’ll get rewards not penalties.

So it’s a good idea to try the Cleansing Ritual, right? Not always. What if Monkey had failed? The defeated Berrok would have lurched back to his feet, ready to fight again.

To keep it short, we omitted one step. When you declare the attack, you can play Skill Cards from your hand. Each card explains its own effect, from damage bonuses through re-rolls to automatic results. There are many Skill Card effects and we will show you some in a separate update.

Players will have to make several important choices, with factors that change as they face different enemies, gain different rewards and have different Skill Cards in their hands. Although attacking is quick, simple and driven by the cards in front of you, it is not 1 dimensional.

New to our rules?

Find an older rules update here:

Q0rbin is happy to show us that another pilgrim has joined us on our journey.

Update #37 Nov 4, 2013
The Dragon Princess, Xiao Yan
54 comments Like 36 likes
This is a huge update! We are at the halfway mark in our campaign and we have a great announcement to make. It’s perfect timing, we literally saw this wonderful art by A.J. Manzanedo just minutes ago.

We wanted this. Backers asked for this. Now it’s ready. A fifth Pilgrim. A female Pilgrim! The Dragon Princess, Xiao Yan.

First some background. In the original story, Tripitaka’s horse is referred to as a Pilgrim, even though the story often talks about 4 Pilgrims. Confusing? Perhaps this is because the White Dragon Horse is just a horse and does not play much part in the storyline. The White Dragon Horse was originally the third son of the Dragon King of the West Sea, the Dragon Prince, transformed into Tripitaka’s trusty steed after eating Tripitaka’s first horse and being defeated by the Monkey King.

The trickster Monkey doesn’t mind if we bend the rules a little. We wanted a female main character, but changing the gender of one of the 4 Pilgrims in the core boxed game was too much of a change for us to make. Transformation is very much a part of the Dragon Prince’s story, so we were happy transforming him to the Dragon Princess. We will also call the Xiao Yan a Pilgrim and we hope she plays an important part in your Journey, not a back seat role.

So how does the Dragon Princess fit into the game? Is it a 5 person game now? Officially, no. The quests are balanced for 4 Pilgrims so the official use would be to choose 4 Pilgrims from the 5 that are now available. However, the way the rules are written, there is nothing stopping you playing with 5 Pilgrims. The hardest part will be selecting a starting square, near the 4 shown for the original band, and we think you are all capable of that. Although the rules don’t change, the quests will play a little easier, because you have more Pilgrims to launch your attacks. But you can easily increase the difficulty of the game by adding tougher Demons to the spawn deck, or removing weaker Demons from the deck, or playing the existing cards a little differently, for example spawning one extra Bull Warrior every time that card is drawn. We can give you many suggestions. So, officially it is still a 1-4 player game but you can easily play it with 5 if you want to.

What is the new miniature? Perhaps you have noticed this announcement was not a stretch goal? We knew she was coming from the start and we always planned to have the steel mold for plastic production. She will be offered as plastic and resin immediately, with nothing to unlock. Want more? We will create a Kickstarter Exclusive pair of dragon wings and you can choose to assemble her with or without the wings. You get the Dragon Princess Profile Sheet and the standard 10 Pilgrim Skill Cards. Do you have one more question? How much will this cost me, perhaps? You should know better than that! Nothing. The Dragon Princess is a plastic Boxed Game Upgrade and a resin Collectors Upgrade. She is free to most backers! Just a way to thank you for supporting us and a celebration of being halfway to our destination.

We have not decided the final retail packaging, but the Dragon Princess will not be part of the core boxed game. She will be a separate expansion pack that will be completely optional, although the KS exclusive wings will not be included.

There will be one bulk shipment to this point of entry and then all European shipments will ship from inside the EU to our backers. Some last minute details depend on the size, weight and number of items in the final product, so we will sign the deal closer to the shipping date, which means we cannot announce the company and the warehouse location yet.

Good news for Hong Kong backers: shipping will be free. When you set your pledge, Kickstarter will realise you are not in the US and add shipping automatically. If you click “Manage Your Pledge” there is a small section at the bottom left that says “Since you're outside the US, be sure you've added $40 to your pledge amount. In the US?” Just click the “In the US?” link to pretend you are in the US and Kickstarter will stop adding the shipping fee.

For China, we will be shipping via Shun Feng. You will pay shipping, but you will pay the actual shipping cost and it will be paid on delivery. So you should also change your shipping costs in Kickstarter to $0, but remember you will have to pay shipping later.

Both Hong Kong and China will be shipped from Hong Kong, so you will not have to wait so long!

Update #39 Nov 5, 2013
Large Scenery Update
18 comments Like 24 likes
Our Pilgrims are still marching on their journey. Thanks for keeping them company.

So this is a large scenery update in many ways. We have unlocked bridge Add-Ons that can be placed on the bridging tiles to bring the game to life. Individually, these are large items. They cover 3x2 or 2x2 board squares but they are a little larger than that because there is plenty of room for the minis to stand on the bridges. The resin models are heavy. They are most certainly not small objective markers.

Next, it’s a large release, in the terms that there are four different bridges. There are different kinds of bridges drawn on the Bridging Tiles, so we have a model for each one.

And finally, because these are our favorite scenery item, these are being released in both resin and plastic. We really like the way the large bridges bring a 3D feel to the board and how the miniatures physically interact with them. We hope our backers like them as much as we do.

Here are some pictures of the resin versions so you can see the different styles, the size in relation to the minis and physical size against a ruler.

When they are painted, they look fantastic on the map. We want to show some painted scenery soon.

Many backers have asked how many gates or other scenery items you need and we will try to answer. Without giving too much away, we have “official” Quests in the rulebook, so we could look at those and tell you the maximums for all scenery. But we also have a guide for making your own Quests and we don’t know what you are going to do. Further, we plan to have a Journey website, and backers (and us!) could publish Quests there. So it is hard to tell you the most you will ever need in all circumstances.

On the other hand, game play tends to concentrate in a small section of the board. Even if you have a huge board you could use a few scenery items near the minis and use the card tokens in the game for the rest. Just move the scenery around as the Pilgrims move to new areas.

So you could use somewhere between a few and a lot of scenery items! We don’t want to recommend that you buy a huge number and then play with half of them most of the time. Back to bridges, there are four types and you could arrange the Bridging Tiles so that there are at most six bridges in play at any one time. The maximum from a Quest described in the rulebook is 5 bridges in play. Our suggestion for the fifth bridge is the stone one (A) and for the sixth, the wooden one (C). With that in mind, here are the prices:

1 Resin Bridge: $12. (Four models available A, B, C, D).

4-Pack of Plastic Bridges: $20 (All four models supplied. Not a random assortment.)

Additional Plastic Bridges: +$3 (Four models available A, B, C, D. You must first buy the 4-Pack).

The survey will let you indicate which bridges you want. The low price for individual plastic bridges is only available to backers that get the plastic 4-Pack.

We hope you can find an option that suits your table top. If this is your first Journey scenery, we are sure you will be happy with it.

So we have had a couple of Boxed Game Upgrades and Add-Ons. Time for a Collectors Upgrade. Remember the plastic Jing Yau Boxed Game Upgrade from ages ago? Come on, resin backers, did you think we would leave you out? One free Jing Yau in resin, to backers getting Collectors Upgrades, when we reach $215,000. When this unlocks, we’ll make a small announcement about a bundle price for demons. More info in the next update.

We have shown a few more stretch goals on the front page, with a little more info in each banner, such as the price. We will not be doing this forever, so enjoy it while you can. Really, we wanted to let you know that there is more planned than scenery, so we wanted to show you the twenty cards and a few more figures. The doors are still in the pipeline, but we have much more to show you. We are nowhere near finished with the big reveals.

Remember we said we would make the plastic Soul Hunter Captain Xi Fung, and our deal with the early backers getting Boxed Game Upgrades? Well you will not have to wait too long!

Update #40 Nov 6, 2013
Game Play Update #7 – Defending
1 comment Like 4 likes
We have been running rules updates for some time now. If you are a new backer, you can find the older rules updates here. You need understand attacking before you read this one.

The Defense Dice roll is made when resolving some attacks. Take a look at this quick video for an introduction:
https://d2pq0u4uni88oo.cloudfront.net/assets/001/289/242/1f9ff8c00bd6dd6bc273e112dd04401c_h264_high.mp4

Like we said, short and sweet. No-one stepped sideways this time, but did you see Monk Sha cheat! I’m sure he rolled 1+1 before the camera zoomed in. We’ll let it slide, he has a real chip on his shoulder about that curse and his monstrous arm.

Like all the steps in playing the game, the cards play a driving role in reminding you how to play. When resolving an attack, look at the attackers Profile Sheet for the Attack Dice, the defenders Profile Sheet for the Defense Dice and roll. The final damage result is the attacker’s damage minus the defender’s defense.

When we discussed attacking, there were many sources for the attacker’s damage, the Attack Dice, the Pilgrim’s Weapon, Skill Cards played as part of the attack. The same is true for defense. The base number is the total from the Defense Dice, but the are other bonuses, such as cover from special terrain and Skill Cards once again. Total up all the defense and reduce the attackers damage as much as you can, to zero if possible.

The video says the Demons do defend and this is true of the Bull Demons in the core game. But don’t memorize this fact, look at their Profile Sheet. If the defender has not Defense Dice mentioned on the Profile Sheet, the defender does not defend. Simple, the cards always give you a clue. There is one little wrinkle: if you do not roll Defense Dice, you do not defend at all. If you do roll the dice, you do not get to use cover, etc. (Perhaps the Pilgrims will meet an enemy that defends later in their journey!)

This opposed dice roll mechanic is quick and easy. Simple math, no tables. Attacks proceed quickly, but with the terrain, Karma Rewards and Skill Cards there are plenty of buffs and debuffs to keep things interesting.

We still have more to come, including some the highlights of Skill Cards and the Search Action. How the Demons are controlled will be coming later, but this should be a popular post!

Another update, contest on BBG starting on Friday.

Update #42 Nov 7, 2013
Spread the Word 2!
8 comments Like 10 likes
Here at Marrow, we’re happy when you, our faithful backers, are happy. We’re so glad that you liked the Dragon Princess that we’ve made you a special avatar to celebrate her addition to our trusty band of Pilgrims.

If you want to use these outside Kickstarter, please do! The more people that know about Journey, the greater the game will become. See this update for instructions on setting your avatar.

Setting your avatar is just one way to Spread the Word. We will be having a contest on BoardGameGeek starting Friday 8th November and closing at end of day Thursday 14th November. Please enter, it is not just for non-backers. You will have the chance to win a copy of Journey and some collectors resin miniatures. Good Fortune, Pilgrims!

While you’re over at BoardGameGeek, don’t forget to become a fan of Journey and recommend our forums. If we can get on the BGG Hotness list, it will drive more people here.

If you like our miniatures head over to Cool Mini or Not and vote for the Marrow sculpts. You do not need to be logged in or have an account. Go to this site http://www.coolminiornot.com/browse and set the "View only images" field to “marrow”, then press “Go” to find them. Click on the thumbnail to view the picture and vote. It will automatically advance to the next picture in the gallery once you have voted.

We know this sounds like work, but if you can help us get more backers, that’s more stretch goals unlocked for you! See this update for other ways to get new backers to join us in our Journey.

Update #43 Nov 8, 2013
Good Fortune!

You are still knocking these stretch goals down! Great work, backers! We see Journey being mentioned in many places on the web and we know this is your work. Awesome.
So, we have unlocked 20 extra cards, 10 Fortune and 10 Misfortune cards, buffs and debuffs handed out with a spin of the wheel. More on exactly how these cards work in the next game play update. So, what are you getting? 20 reprints of our favorite cards? Of course not. 20 new cards for the deck? We can do better! These KS exclusive cards can be used to mix things up a bit.

Ten of the cards are printed with “KS+” in the corner. This half of the bonus pack is a little more beneficial than the normal boxed game deck. The Fortune Cards have better than average buffs, the Misfortune Cards have weaker than average debuffs, you get the idea.

Ten of the cards are printed with “KS-” in the corner. This half of the bonus pack is a little more detrimental than the regular deck. The Fortune Cards have weaker buffs, the Misfortune Cards have stronger debuffs.

If you mix all 20 cards into the regular deck, the game will stay at the same difficulty, but it will be a little more random. You might luck out with a great fortune draw, you might back yourselves against the wall with an evil misfortune draw.

Mix in just the KS+ cards, the game will be very slightly easier. Mix in just the KS- cards, the game will be very slightly harder.

Overall, these are small changes to the difficulty, because these cards are not the most important factor. But you get to change things up a bit, and really, you don’t want it to be the same all the time.

Coming next, Soul Hunter Captain Xi Fung Add-On in plastic, $5. Remember the time limited bonus? Many of you will get this figure for free. See Update 28.

Update #44 Nov 8, 2013
Game Play Update #8 – Skill Cards
12 comments Like 10 likes
We have been running rules updates for some time now. If you are a new backer or need a refresh, you can find the older rules updates here.
So we briefly mentioned that Skill Cards could be used during an attack to improve your chances. Let’s talk about Skill Cards in more depth.

Each Pilgrim has a unique deck of 10 Skill Cards – actually 11 cards since you are getting the extra KS Exclusive card. The decks are quite different and help to define the Pilgrims as very different characters in the game. One card in the deck is the Pilgrim’s Weapon, which is removed from the deck and added to the Pilgrim’s hand, along with two random Skill Cards, during setup.

Skill Cards are critical resources that need to be managed carefully in the game. During the game, one effect of Fortune Cards is to let the Pilgrim draw a Skill Card, and when certain parts of the Quest are completed, the Pilgrims will also draw more Skill Cards. But some Skill Cards are discarded when used, so they are in short supply. Use them wisely. Unless you are playing Monkey, then just go crazy.

So what do they do, and when do they do it? Well one fun part of unpacking Journey and playing your first game will be seeing the great variety of Skill Cards that are present. The cards have different effects, get played at different times, have different durations, some you keep in your hand, and some you discard. Each Pilgrim has a different deck and although some effects are repeated, many cards are completely unique and only belong to one Pilgrim. We are not going to spoil the surprise by revealing too many here, but we will end this update by showing you a couple of very different cards belonging to the Monkey King.

The more powerful the card, the more likely it is to be associated with a cost, typically a Chi Point cost. If you cannot pay the cost, you cannot play the card. So as well as trying to hold back cards for the right moment, you will have to reserve Chi points, or whatever else the card describes as the cost.

When is the right moment? That is also hard to tell because you must commit to using many of the cards before you see your dice roll. If you managed to roll enough, the card is played and wasted (and you still pay the cost!). If you enter a tough battle and hold back a card, a bad roll might cause you trouble that you could have avoided if you had activated the card. You will be faced with tough choices.

Okay, here are three of Monkey’s cards. Any of you that know the back story will find these in keeping with his character.

Remember Monkey’s flying cloud? Monkey can use it to gain an extra Move Action. Perhaps he will Attack, Move and Attack again this turn. There is no Chi cost, but it is a one time use card.

Handy when you really want to make a cleanse roll, perhaps topping your Good Karma up to get the next Karma reward. Monkey might be wild but he has moments of compassion.

This card is a double edged sword. Demons normally attack everyone and move towards Tripitaka, but for this turn, they will move towards Monkey and only attack him. Monkey can draw fire away from his fellow Pilgrims, giving them time to heal, search, or do whatever they need to do, but at the cost of taking many attacks. Monkey is not only a trickster, he is a hero (or perhaps he was just acting the fool!). He can keep it and play this again, but it consumes a lot Chi and he could get really beaten up.

There is something else different here, this card operates over an extended period – it applies for the rest of the turn. To help you remember this, we use the exhaust mechanism. Turn the card sideways when you activate it and when you look at your play area later, you will see the difference and know it is currently in effect. At the start of the next turn, there is a refresh step, where you turn it upright again.

What? Did you expect us to show you three simple +1 Attack, +2 Attack, +1 Defense cards? Where is the fun in that?

These are prototype cards and the wording may change slightly. Skill cards with complex effects will be mentioned in a FAQ section of the rule book, but most of them are straightforward.

Q0rbin is pleased to see a plastic version of Captain Xi Fung joining us.

Update #45 Nov 9, 2013
Captain Xi Fung Plastic Miniature Unlocked!
5 comments Like 9 likes
We are really pleased to reach this total! Many thanks to all our backers!

We feel very fortunate to have so many early backers. Pushing the pledge total up early in the project makes it much easier for us to create the steel molds for making plastic minis. This goal was especially important because we promised to give this miniature (and all the game cards) to early backers, if we could unlock it. Now we have! Let us repeat the rules for getting this free gift:

To get Captain Xi Fung in Plastic, you must: (1) have made your pledge before Update #28 was posted, (2) receive Boxed Game Upgrades when the Kickstarter closes.

To get Captain Xi Fung in Resin, you must: (1) have made your pledge before Update #28 was posted, (2) receive Collectors Upgrades when the Kickstarter closes.

Collectors Upgrade backers only get the resin miniature free, not both miniatures. All game cards are included with the gift.

Soul Hunter Captain Xi Fung is also available as an Add-On, in case you missed the free gift. Don’t forget the Soul Hunters are unique characters and only 1 of each Soul Hunter can be in play. You can get a copy in plastic for $5 and resin for $15. Just raise you pledge and tell us in the survey at the end exactly which miniatures you want to add on. All Soul Hunter Add-Ons come with the relevant cards to play them.

Next up is the third and final Soul Hunter, Warrior Tang. We will give more details for all three of them when Warrior Tang is unlocked, but here’s a very quick summary, if you are thinking of pledging for them. They are completely optional, you can play perfectly well with just one of them, if you are looking for a little variation and you can play with all three of them on the board at once, if you really want to.

Can someone explain the shipping and add-ons?

Let's say I want 4 of the resin 'boxes' terrain and a set of the plastic bridges, and that's it.

How would I pledge? What level do I pledge? How much is shipping?

I am kinda confused and right now I only want some terrain pieces and possibly a few models.

Q0rbin has searched a mystical box and has revealed it's contents; a new update!

Update #46 Nov 9, 2013
Game Play Update #9 – Searching, Fortune and Misfortune Cards
3 comments Like 7 likes
This is one more update in the rules series. Click here to see the older updates.
Start with this short video and then we will talk about some cards:
https://d2pq0u4uni88oo.cloudfront.net/assets/001/304/907/74725098972dde938d5a1d4dbfc3b952_h264_high.mp4

Searching is simple. Go to the Mystical Box and spend one Action Point searching. The Universe will sometimes reward you, and sometimes punish you.

Pilgrims can search each box as many times as they want, but it is not easy to stand there and search for as long as you like. First, you only get two Action Points per turn and you have things to do and places to go. All the time you are searching, Demons are spawning and you are not progressing in the Quest. Further, you will get Misfortune cards too, so it is not all good news.

Searching is simple but the interesting part is the Fortune and Misfortune Cards. There are 40 of each in the base game and 10 more of each in the Fortune/Misfortune Card stretch goal. There is plenty of variation in the decks and we do not want to spoil all the fun by revealing everything.

Fortune Cards give you bonuses. They do not stay in your hand themselves, rather they give you immediate buffs and you discard the fortune card. Here is a simple card:

By now, you know that Skill Cards stay in your hand. Fortune Cards can add to your hand, for example the Unknown Scripture lets you draw another Skill Card from your deck. You keep the Skill Card not the Fortune Card.

Having a bad day? Misfortune Cards are much the same. Immediate debuffs and harm. We have not spoken about Condition Cards yet. Skill Cards are good cards you hold in your hand, Condition Cards are bad cards to have. They are on-going negative effects from particularly nasty Demon attacks … and Misfortune Cards. We have not seen the Condition Cards in a rule update yet, so suffice to say that some Misfortune Cards hand out these on-going negative conditions.

Some of the Misfortune Cards are more exciting. Our favorite is the Demon's Trap card, which spawns a Bull Warrior adjacent to you!

So search, spin the wheel and take your chances.

More rules to come. We will compare the Pilgrims and then we are close to unveiling The Demon Video and a couple more updates on how they play!

As normal, we are showing prototype cards that may change slightly in the final game.

Update #47 Nov 10, 2013
Game Play Update #10 – Condition Cards (And Dice!)
3 comments Like 5 likes
This is the next update in the rules series. Click here to see the older updates.

This is going to be a short update but we have to pass this information on. We spoke about Condition Cards in the last update and we will mention them again soon.

You have seen the Pilgrims take some damage. Roll the attack dice, roll the defense dice, the difference is the damage. That damage is done immediately. However, some negative effects apply over a period of time and the Condition Cards are placed beside your Profile Sheet in your playing area to remind you that you are suffering from the effect.

Here is a sample card:

This one is straightforward, you take damage for a couple of turns. Others are more interesting, such as not being able to attack, or not being able to take any actions at all.

You receive these ill effects in a few situations, such as Misfortune Cards, which we introduced yesterday. We have not discussed the Boss Demons, yet, but as well as doing immediate damage, they can inflict ongoing damage too.

We will mention Condition Cards again in the Soul Hunter review, coming soon.

As usual, we are showing prototype cards that may change slightly in the final game.

And just because it is fun, here is a picture of Monkey on fire. Don’t get burned.

And now for something completely different! We have seen many requests for extra dice in the comments, and it was simple enough to add extra dice packs to the Add-On list. There are enough dice in the box to play the game, but we can see that you might want each player to have a set of dice within easy reach. Well, whatever the reason, extra packs of dice are now available. All six custom dice, $6.

Nkelsch - it says on the Kickstarter page that you can pledge in at $10 and then pick your add ons - they're all listed on the front page. You just have to drop Marrow a note asking about shipping. I know a few backers that are in for just one or two minis, but not the game.
If you pledge $1, you can comment on the Kickstarter comment thread. Most of the backers are helpful with newcomers.

I really can't pledge big on this, after getting sucked in to Mars Attacks. I could actually see just donating a dollar for the cause, though. The Monkey King is a fantastic story, and it's a brilliant idea to bring it to life as a board game. If Wukong were scaled to match my other figures, I'd be down for one in a heartbeat.

The Pilgrim’s Background

Let’s take a short break from rules to look some great sculpting by Ray Wong and paint work by Hon Ho, while we give you some background for the Pilgrims.

In the following images, you can see the resin miniatures and how they look when they are painted and based for display.

The rulebook is large, but it is not solid, dry, rules. The plan is to have many graphical examples in the rulebook, which add to its size. There will also be background information about the game world. Take a quick look:

If you click here, the larger image is easier to read.

Tomorrow we will be back to rules with a comparison of how the Pilgrims play in the game. And then, Demons!

The Monkey King model is good but it's Monk Sha that I'm really looking forward to painting.

Game Play Update #11 – The Pilgrims in Action

One aspect we wanted to ensure for Journey was that the replay value is high. If you play it several times, we want it to be fresh and fun. We have already dropped hints about what you can do to make the game

• Introduce a few (or a lot) of the new Demons.

• Play an extreme strategy, for example, rushing and killing, or the opposite, taking every side quest.

• Change the card decks.

Today, we will show you how the Pilgrims differ from each other. This is another way to keep things interesting, you will all be playing a slightly different role in the game. This is just a summary, full details are being saved for when you open the game box.

One simple difference is the attack range. Each Pilgrim has different attacking strengths which start with which squares they can target. These images make it clear where the Pilgrim can attack and help you to understand the targeting icon that is shown on the Pilgrim Profile sheet:

Clearly the Monkey King and Cho have the most targeting options and Tripitaka has the least. Similarly Monkey King and Cho do slightly more damage with their weapons than Tripitaka and Monk Sha.

Monkey moves the fastest. His skill cards buff his movement and attacks. His Karma Rewards also affect his movement and attacks.

Tripitaka has many Skill Cards that buff his defense and give him healing abilities. He has the lowest health of all the pilgrims. His Karma Rewards affect defense and the number of Skill Cards he holds.

Monk Sha has the most varied effects for his Skill Cards, including buffs to attack, defense and movement. But he also has several cards that act on nearby Pilgrims, giving them extra actions or allowing cooperative attacks against one target with many bonus dice rolls. His Karma Rewards include drawing (and discarding!) Skill Cards. All this make him the most complex character to play.

Cho is the slowest Pilgrim, but he has the most starting health. His skills are the most heavily oriented to attacking. His Karma Rewards affect both attack and defense.

The Demons are focused on killing Tripitaka, the Pilgrim least equipped to get in a big fight. So for all their differences, the Pilgrims have one thing in common. They will all be working to defend Tripitaka!

Coming soon, a series of updates on how you play the Demons. If you missed any of the rules updates you can skip back through them, start by clicking here.

As another Soul Hunter becomes available to the pilgrim's, Q0rbin teaches us how the Soul Hunters fight.

Update #50 Nov 12, 2013
Soul Hunter Warrior Tang Joins the Band!
11 comments Like 14 likes
Congratulations backers! You are still unlocking great upgrades.

So here is Warrior Tang, the final Soul Hunter to join the Pilgrims on their adventure. Warrior Tang is a Collectors Upgrade, so some of you will be getting another resin miniature for free. We will add him to the Add-On list, $5 for the plastic mini and $15 for the resin mini. As always, you will get all the game cards you need to use the miniature in the game. Take a look at the great art from Adrian Smith.

Next up, you are working to unlock Soul Cleanser Zhilan. More info when she is available, but she will also work to help the Pilgrims.

Enough with the Stretch Goals, let’s talk game play. First, a recap of the Soul Hunter rules and then a look at their differences.

Is it worth the risk summoning a Soul Hunter’s aid?

The three Soul Hunters all share this common game mechanic, to help the Pilgrims kill Demons. Each Pilgrim can summon at most one Soul Hunter at a time, by playing a skill card that is equipped at the start of the Quest. The skill card is discarded when played, so think of summoning them as a one time event. Perhaps you will work through all your skill cards, shuffle the discard deck, and draw it again. But that is pretty unlikely! Use the Soul Hunter wisely. The player that summoned the Soul Hunter controls the Soul Hunter and activates the summoned character after his Pilgrim. Their actions are similar to Pilgrims, but they do not search or rest. Each Pilgrim can only summon one Soul Hunter at any given time.

They are all experienced fighters, with Xi Fung targeting the most squares, but Garvok having the longest range. Their attack dice rolls are the same as each other and these ferocious warriors do not defend. Like the Demons, they are one shot kills with quite low Health. Be careful, with them, you don’t want to get them killed. Xi Fung has the fastest movement, Xi Fung and Tang have slightly more health than Garvok. Garvok is the ugliest.

They also offer some magical protection to the Pilgrim that summoned them:

Garvok protects the Pilgrim that summoned him from Burned conditions.
Xi Fung protects the Pilgrim that summoned him from Poisoned conditions.
Warrior Tang protects the Pilgrim that summoned him from Paralyzed conditions.
If these conditions are in effect, they are eliminated when the Pilgrim summons the Soul Hunter, and the Pilgrim ignores them while the Soul Hunter is working alongside them. But, if the Pilgrims can summon all the Soul Hunters at the same time, the protection is amplified. All Pilgrims are immune to all ongoing conditions!

Finally the Soul Hunters are unique characters, so you only need one of each for game play. We want to give you a range of playing options all following the theme of a small band of individuals fighting through the Demon hordes. As you can imagine, it is hard for us to “mass produce” plastic miniatures when they are optional and you only need at most one of each. However, we are trying to keep the cost low and are looking at how we can create a character pack bundle. Stay tuned!

A little annoying that they flipped the direction of the Soul Hunters attack vectors compared to the pilgrims, at first glance I thought Xi Fung only attacked behind himself... but hey, backers requested it so it just shows the creators listening to their backers. I like the sound of the character bundle because I want at least all the figs in plastic that I can.

Here's a few of the upcoming stretch goals off of the main page:

Is Peng Po's father? That is one tough looking battle panda. I would like to petition this thread gets changed to "Journey: Wrath of Demons by Marrow @235k - Battle Panda @260k"; everybody will come flocking for the battle panda action. Ah crap, I just imagined Peng eating bamboo and falling over, rolling down a hill like some a panda I've seen.

I would roll a Panda warband.

They can hang out with all my other hairy mammals.

I still don't get why this game is not getting more coverage.

Are people allergic to the Chinese/ Asian theme or something?

Nice looking figures, regular gameplay updates, a fair amount of free stretch goals, lots of resin options for those that want them, reasonable buy in price... I just don't see why there aren't more people clamoring to get in on this.

Again, only thing I can really think of besides the usual KS fatigue is the theme is a bit foreign for some.

Probably a combination of the following:

- The creator is not a 'big name', and it is being run out of Hong Kong rather than the US or Europe.
- The game doesn't feature zombies, cthulhu, excessive tits, giant robots, a licensed property or an existing product line.
- While affordable and good value, the game currently isn't offering a completely bonkers amount of stuff for the $100.
- There have been a number of big miniatures Kickstarters recently with some or all of the above, often encouraging a high-level buy in.
- Christmas is now looming in many people's minds...

I think it does look good, and seems to be well-run, and while I'm disappointed that I think I missed out on some timed bonuses, I'll be keeping an eye on this one. Certainly need more co-op boardgames that don't get stale quickly!

Q0rbin shares with us the knowledge of how to use doors!

Update #51 Nov 13, 2013
Game Play Update #12 – Doors and 2000 Backers Celebration!
2 comments Like 9 likes
Hello, backers! This update is a combo, some brief rules and a new stretch goal to celebrate an important milestone.

You have seen structures with impenetrable walls on the Map Tiles and Door Tokens in the game contents. How do they work? Simple.

Doors are not marked on the Map Tiles, so that they can be positioned differently in the Quests. In the Quest setup, you will be told where to place the Door Tiles on the board. Door Tiles are double sided and are always placed in the closed position.

Pilgrims have 2 Action Points each turn. When the Pilgrims are adjacent to a closed door, they can spend 1 Action Point to break down the door. The token is turned over and the door is permanently open. The action is automatic, no dice rolls are required. No one can move through a closed door, Demons cannot open doors, and anyone can move through the broken down doorway.

If you missed some rule info, check here for past updates.

That was short, what else can we announce in the update? We are adding the resin door set to the Add-On list now, $12 for one closed and one broken door. And there’s more. We will put a new Collectors Upgrade stretch goal on the front page, for a set of resin doors (one closed, one broken), that will be unlocked if we reach 2000 backers before the end of the project.

We need about 576 new backers to hit the goal with 9 days left; I would love it if we hit it but I'm not holding my breath.

Well, aside from that - they're a startup made of a few creative types, so there's a lot of risk there. The Doom That Came to Atlantic City comes to mind...

However, at the moment we have made no firm plans for retail sale, either through games stores or our web site. We have not even set the MRSP yet, although we know that it will be higher than the pledges offered here.

A really very interesting update posted!

The Alternative Tripitaka Sculpt
10 comments

We have some exciting news. We can see many reasons that backers want female Pilgrims and the Dragon Princess was very popular. Our problem is the original story has a fairly small band and it does not contain female leads. But, we have a wild idea. In Journey to the West, Tripitaka is described as an androgynous figure, so much so that when it was time to cast actors for the 70s Japanese TV show ‘Monkey’, they chose a woman to play the role. The beautiful and ever popular Masako Natsume played Tripitaka in the cult favorite before going on to film work and winning the 1983 Hochi Film Award for Best Actress.

With all male main characters, Journey to the West was certainly a product of its time. We think we can push the boundaries a little with an alternate sculpt of Tripitaka that is female. We’d like to think the 21st century is ready for a virtuous woman to be a Pilgrim and lead our band. We think this is a great way to honor Masako Natsume’s contribution to the Journey saga.

So how does the alternate Tripitaka fit into the game? Simple. She is just an alternate sculpt of the androgynous male Tripitaka and plays with the same card deck and same rules. You are free to choose whichever Tripitaka figure you want to use. Obviously, there will only be one Tripitaka in the band.

We expect her to be popular, but we would still like to give this as a gift. All backers that pledge before Monday 18, Nov 4:00pm EST and who are eligible for Collectors Upgrades at the end of the project will receive a free resin alternative Tripitaka miniature. We are adding her to the resin Add-On list now, for a $15 increase to your pledge.

We know it is a long way off, but if the pledge total reaches $300K, we will be able to produce this alternate sculpt in plastic. Any backers that met the pledge deadline above and are receiving Boxed Game Upgrade rewards at the end of the campaign will then receive a free plastic alternate Tripitaka. We did make good on the free plastic Xi Fung, we sincerely hope we can reach this total. At $300K, it will also be offered as a plastic Add-On for $5.

Just as with Captain Xi Fung, if we can make her in plastic, backers will only get one gift, either plastic or

Please note one slight difference with this Add-On. As this is intended as an alternate for the male Tripitaka, it is not supplied with new game cards. Use the original cards supplied in the boxed game.

At this point, it would make sense for them, or someone, to put together a graphic representation of everything you get in the two levels (plastic and resin).

It might make people jump for the resin Collector's pledge level.

I suppose the thing I have to factor in about shipping, is that in the UK it costs me $10-15 just to get a single "big box" boardgame shipped to me from a local retailer. If I was buying all the extras most Kickstarters come with at the same time, it would probably be more. And even after an online retailer's discount for the base game I'd be paying much more than the US anyway...

It probably makes me more accepting of shipping fees for Kickstarters than I should be, but sometimes I do have to look at how far my money goes at retail, and the answer is...not very far.

The first soul cleanser has been unlocked, Q0rbin is pleased.

Update #53 Nov 15, 2013
Soul Cleanser Zhilan
26 comments Like 22 likes
Well, backers, you’ve taken another step on the journey. Thanks for your support.

Soul Cleanser Zhilan, a Dao Priest, has been unlocked. Once again, A.J. Manzanedo has created great art for this character. Zhilan is an Add-On, $5 for the plastic mini, $15 for the resin mini. As normal, she comes with full game cards for use in the game. Here is the full image:

You have seen the Soul Hunters, deadly killers that help out in a fight but at the cost of raising the Pilgrims’ Bad Karma. The Soul Cleansers are their counterpart. Also summoned by the Pilgrims to aid in battles, the Soul Cleansers are committed to the Cleansing Ritual and saving the Demons from their sins. Naturally Soul Cleansers never kill defeated Demons, and if the Cleansing Ritual is successful, they add to the Pilgrims’ Good Karma.

So it sounds like the Soul Cleansers are the better allies. Maybe not! Good karma is, well, good, but the Cleansing Ritual does not always succeed. A failure means the Demon recovers from the defeat, at full health, ready to fight again!

There are more Soul Cleansers to come. Once they are all unlocked, we will give more details of how they play and a comparison of their abilities.

Next up, the Nightmare Deck, how it affects game play, and a related bundle.

The Nightmare Deck

So we have reached $250K, amazing. Backers, we are so pleased with your support!

You have unlocked the KS Exclusive Nightmare Deck, which is included in all Boxed Game Upgrades.

We’ve already hinted at changing the game difficulty for increased replay value and we know many gamers like the option of a really tough challenge. The Nightmare Deck changes the Spawn Deck for Demons, spawning more demons with tougher demons coming more often. You could combine the KS Exclusive Fortune/Misfortune cards with this. The Nightmare Deck combined with the KS- Fortune/Misfortune cards will give you a really tough game.

Up next, Soul Cleanser Peng.

Another update to share.

Update #55 Nov 16, 2013
The Nightmare Deck – Part 2
7 comments Like 16 likes
Hi Backers! Hon Ho here. With a two-man team, it is very difficult to keep this website up to date and do some actual work. I was stuck travelling for business yesterday and Ray had to make this update without me but he did not have all the information. Here is more about the Nightmare Deck.

You know you have unlocked the KS Exclusive Nightmare Deck, and it will change the difficulty of the game.

Let’s talk about game play and balance in the core game for a moment. Like all “enemy spawning” games, there are rules for what happens when you have no more minis to bring into play and as with many other games, the existing Demons on the board will get tougher. The boxed game contains the right amount of miniatures to play the game without running out too often. To give you a hint, if you have allowed so many Demons to run loose on the board that you run out, you are probably going to lose. It’s time for the “out of minis” rule to power up the Demons so they can put you out of your misery.

So if you have the right number, why give you more minions in early stretch goals? They have many uses from spares for painting while you play, bulking out cross-over armies and actually playing with a larger number of minis if you want to defer the “out of minis” rule or develop your own Quests. But they will be very useful with the Nightmare Deck. Clearly, with faster spawning, you will need more demons and the extras we have given you as Kickstarter bonuses now tie up nicely with the Kickstarter Exclusive cards and you have a really good use for the extra minions! We can just hear you thinking, “This sounds good, but I wish they had given me some extra Boof Bullserkers. Those Bull Demon centaur things look sweet.” Check the front page! We’ve added the Boof Box Game Upgrade now.

And last, a new bundle. We have seen backers comment about getting two copies of Journey: Wrath of Demons and home brewing crazy Quests. We love the idea of you making your own Quests and we hope to see many ideas posted to the Journey forums when they go up, but two games is a lot of duplication. Here’s an optional bundle that would take you part way there, the Double Nightmare Bundle $40:

15 Nightmare Cards
20 Fortune/Misfortune Cards
4 Berrok Bull Warriors
3 Bharhaz Bull Archers
2 Boof Bullserkers
1 Borrack Bull General

So with an extra copy of the cards and even more minions, you can go crazy customizing brutal decks. But don’t forget, the Double Nightmare Bundle duplicates cards and minis you already have, so it is only for the most hardcore players that are looking to create their own monstrous Quests or fight wave after wave of Demons in an endless Defend the Buddha scenario.

So, 1500 backers, $250K and our last week. We still have plenty in store for this last leg of the journey. Please tag along with us!

We also hit 260k so I'm just waiting for the update in regards to Cleanser Peng, or the last give you'll ever have give you a hug.

Update #56 Nov 16, 2013
Soul Cleanser Peng
3 comments Like 7 likes
Your support is astounding. The last few days have been just amazing, with many new backers joining us. What a great time to unlock this stretch goal.

You have unlocked Soul Cleanser Peng and we are adding him to the Add-On list, for $18 in resin, $6 in plastic. Peng is optional and unique, so you need at most 1 for game play. He can be used independently of Zhilan, so you do not need to get them as a pair. As you might have guessed, he is one of the large miniatures, using a 2 square base. The miniature is impressive, think of him being solid like Cho Hakai and about 70mm tall. If you look at this wonderful art by A.J. Manzanedo, you already get some idea of his presence and ferocity.

But Soul Cleanser Peng is actually a very gentle creature. Most of the time, this panda spirit hides in bamboo thickets, eating his favorite food. The Pilgrims encountered him when he was defending a rural village from an overwhelming Demon attack. As a nature spirit, abominable Demons are quick to rouse his anger and he fights to restore balance in the world by defeating these evil creatures. But his peaceful nature returns just as quickly and he performs his own Cleanse Ritual on the enemies he defeats to remove their sins and give them peace. No-one understands his Cleanse Ritual or where he learned to do it. Once the Pilgrims aided Peng to protect his villagers, he committed to helping the Pilgrims in their ongoing quest to rid the world from Demons once and for all.

We promised more information on the Soul Cleansers when they were all unlocked, which would be now. There are only 2 Soul Cleansers as part of this Kickstarter, so you don’t have to wait any longer.

The Soul Cleansers are allies, summoned through skill cards. Each Pilgrim can only summon one Soul Cleanser at a time, like the Soul Hunters. But as clerics and killers, the Soul Cleansers and Soul Hunters are enemies. You can play with them all in one Quest, but you cannot summon a Hunter and a Cleanser to the game board at the same time. Soul Cleansers are activated immediately after the Pilgrim that summoned them and are controlled by that player.

Soul Cleansers never kill their defeated enemies, and must attempt the Cleanse Ritual. They get a boost to their cleanse ability to help them succeed in this attempt. The Good Karma generated as a result is given to the Pilgrim that summoned them. This is a fantastic benefit for the Pilgrim but the Soul Cleansers are not too powerful. Because they have relatively weak attacks, they are very unlikely to defeat Boss Demons, the first step before starting their powerful Cleanse Ritual.

For those of you that read update #50, you will remember that we said we were working on a plastic character bundle for the Soul Hunters and Cleansers. These characters are unique so we cannot generate the same discounts as you see for bundles which repeat miniature content, like the rank and file models of large armies. This bundle is all five Soul Hunters and Cleansers, with their cards, for $22. Some of you will get Captain Xi Fung for free, so we have a 4 character bundle, for $18.

Do not forget these characters are optional. They are not part of the core game and you can play without them. If you just want to get your favorites (we know, Peng right!), getting a few works perfectly well.

Up next, Boof Minions as a Boxed Game Upgrade, so that you have a full set of extra minions for Nightmare games.

We have been getting extremely positive comments here and around the web on our concept art, thank you all.

There is no space to show it all on the Front Page, so we have created a small Facebook album with some of our favorite pieces. We hope you like them. We will rotate the art in this album so you will see something different from time to time, a “picture of the day” kind of thing. There is a banner on the front page to make it easy for you to take a peek in the future. Have fun!

The Art of Journey

We have more rules updates written, covering the Demons, Quests, and how some of the Boss Demons play. And finally, we will start revealing details of the Expansion Pack!

Plastic bundles in the spoiler.

Cool. With all plastic soul hunters I'll just get the bundle of 4 then.

And the kyonshi.

And a panda warband.

And probably that expansion whenever they decide to show it off.

Plus I've got the makings of a Beastman army for whatever fantasy gaming system I feel like using!

Speaking of showing off the expansion, Q0rbin brings us news of the White Bone Demons!

Update #57 Nov 17, 2013
Journey’s First Expansion

Expansion Video

We hoped you like the concept art for the first full expansion for Journey: Wrath of the Demons.

As our Pilgrims cross a desolate and craggy mountain pass, they unknowingly stray into the land of the White Bone Demons. At first, the band meets a few skeletal warriors, possessed bones of a long dead army, risen to serve their Queen. After battling against the more corrupted White Bone Demon forms, the Pilgrims find that their Cleanse Ritual is not so effective against these Demon-possessed skeletons. Finally, the narrow path takes them to the Forbidden White Cave, where the Pilgrims confront Yara, Queen of the White Bone Demon Clan, who realises that this is no ordinary group of mortals. If Yara can eat the flesh of Tripitaka, she can gain immortality, regenerate her flesh and regain her beauty. As she launches her minions into a pitched battle, the fast moving White Bone Demons scuttle across the battlefield and Yara herself joins the fray.

Will Yara’s poisoned attack will be the end of our four travelers? There is more at stake than just the Pilgrims lives. If they can defeat Yara and the White Bone Demon Clan, Tripitaka will recover the second piece of the lost Sutras and will be one step closer to restoring the seal on the Underworld.

Undead have arrived. As a backer noted, they seem more Japanese then Chinese, but another backer countered that during the Tang Dynasty, Japan and China were close and shared cultural and artistic features... how accurate that is I am not sure. Food for thought.

I'm really psyched for the expansion, but am a little...wary of going beyond the $250 I'm already pledged for (shipping+collectors edition+extra figures). Not least because this is a new company with no track record, and I'd really start to miss that amount of money if things went south.

Currently the collector's edition doesn't make very much sense - you don't get close to everything being offered as add-ons, but neither are you only getting resin versions of stuff you already have in plastic (so you can't have a separate set of "boardgame" and "display" miniatures if you want to play with everything). Not quite sure where I should be pledging, really.

The longer this campaign runs, the more I think I'll probably stick with the single journey and just get the plastic bundles.

I've got an EB collector, and while the temptation to have nice resin figures to paint is there, I'd much prefer pieces that get to be used in the game.

Those plastic bridges would be nice extra pieces to use for skirmish games.

Hmm - would appreciate if you let us know when you were about to drop it!

I really do love resin miniatures (and while my painting is not brilliant, I at least feel that I'm not destroying the things with my brush), but sometimes I feel that each one should come with a miniature bell jar.

I got one of the first 10 Heresy Dragons (NB. effectively a prototype that needed lots of gap-filling), and have not been able to bring myself to glue the sticky-out tail to the main body yet for just this reason! Journey's are far, far more delicate looking.

Boof Minions are in the Bag

Well, that did not take long! This journey would be impossible without you.

You have unlocked the Boof Bullserker Boxed Game Upgrade and all backers receiving these rewards will be getting two extra plastic Boof Demons in their shipment. We are really pleased with this take on the traditional centaur. It would have been easy to take the body of a bull and combine it with the head of a bull and come up with a … bull. We think we have something better.

The Boof Demons have been placed on the Add-On list, $10 for 2 plastic minis. They were already on the bundle list and if you really need more Bull Demons, the Double Nightmare Bundle is better value. Don’t forget, the Boxed Game Upgrades give you plenty of Bull Demons for use with the Nightmare deck and only the most hard-core gamers will need the Double Nightmare Bundle.

Is there anything else coming? Maybe you have noticed our first Expansion Pack!

I'll give you guys a heads up if I do end up switching levels (my pledge ain't lowering- I want those bundles).

Any guesses as to how much that expansion is going to cost us?

My guess is 40 or 50. I'd prefer cheaper, but I don't see that realistically happening if there are new tiles and rules involved as well.

Update #59 Nov 18, 2013
Game Play Update #13 – Spawning Demons
15 comments Like 13 likes
The rules updates are nearly finished. You should have a good idea about controlling the Pilgrims (click here previous updates), so now let’s focus on the Demons.

It’s traditional to start with a short video:
Game Play Video

The video gives a very quick overview of the Demons’ turn and we are not going to be able to cover all the details here today. And please forgive those sideways moves! It has been a while since the video crew watched the movement video.

As you know, there is no “Dungeon Master” controlling the Demons during the game. The Pilgrim players will be controlling them, under direction from relatively simple rules. But no matter how simple and clear the rules are, there will be ambiguities and odd conditions. “Move on the shortest path towards Tripitaka” might sound clear and precise but what if two different paths are the same length and put a Demon in attack position? It is easy to find odd circumstances.

We are tackling this two ways. The rule book will have a large number of graphical examples showing how to handle many different situations. Also we will tell you that when you are stuck, it does not really matter. Journey is supposed to be a fun, fast, game. If you can’t decide between options, just pick one and play on. Double check the rules tomorrow.

Why are we making this point now? Because we know we cannot cover every aspect of the Demons’ turn here in a couple of updates. Remember, you are just seeing the basics now, and we will give you much more information before you play the game.

After the Pilgrims have been activated, the game switches to the Demon Phase:

Spawn Demons from the Demon Gates.
Activate each Demon in turn. Each Demon has 2 Action Points.
So, Demons appear on the map at the Spawn Gates. There are spawn tokens in the box and you can get the 3D scenery version if you want to. We use tokens or markers because the gates are not at fixed positions printed on the Map Tiles. Each Quest will tell you where to place the Gates when you setup. Normally there will be one Gate on a Map Tile, but there can be zero or more than one.

Most of the time, all Gates will be active, spawning Demons immediately. There are times when distant Gates are inactive and times that Pilgrims can close Gates, but for simplicity start by thinking all the Gates are active. (The Quest description will tell you about activating or closing Gates if required.)

Demons are spawned by drawing from the Demon Card Deck, so draw one card per Gate. Most cards have simple instructions, like the card you saw in the video telling you to place two Berrok Bull Warriors. Which leads to the next question, where exactly do you place the Demons?

We have mentioned in passing that the Demons are out to get Tripitaka because the Sutras will give him the power to seal the Demons back in the underworld. We’ll talk a little more about this later, but while spawning they follow this plan too:

Place the new Demons on the Map Tile adjacent to the Gate.
Use the open square that is closest to Tripitaka.
Face the Demon in the direction to move along the shortest path towards Tripitaka.
Poor Tripitaka, sounds like he is heading for trouble.

Coming soon: The Demon Actions.

Update #60 Nov 18, 2013
Journey has Expanded
11 comments Like 15 likes
We are really pleased at how popular the expansion has proved to be. Honestly, we did not expect this to be unlocked so quickly. We have the best backers! But don’t worry, we really want to make Journey a long lived franchise and have a long range plan. There is plenty more to come, if you tag along with us.

We have unlocked the White Bone Demon Expansion. You have been guessing what is included, and now we can show you that this is much more than a simple miniature bundle. The White Bone Demon Expansion is a real change to what is on offer. 10 more plastic miniatures, new types of Demons and their Demon Boss, many cards, a rules supplement and a Map Tile for Yara’s lair:

Yara, the White Bone Queen, an oversize mini approximately 70mm tall, with a 2 square base.
1 Yagara Bone Beast, an oversize mini approximately 40mm tall/65 mm long, with a 2 square base.
2 Yangu Bone Generals
6 Yataru Bone Warriors
4 Demon Profile Sheets, a new Demon Deck, new Skill Cards
1 new Map Tile For Yara’s lair
New Quests

As normal for expansions, this is not a standalone product. There will be a rules supplement, but it will be based on the Journey rulebook. You will play with some Map Tiles and Bridge Tiles from Journey and the base rules are the same. But the expansion is more than different shaped playing pieces. The White Bone Demons play very differently to the Bull Demons, being faster and harder to cleanse. Faster means it is easier for the Pilgrims to get overrun. With the Cleanse Ritual being less effective, Pilgrims will have to risk more kills and Bad Karma. You will need new strategies to defeat the White Bone Demons.

Finally, there is a new game mechanic. The White Bone Demons are the reanimated bones of long dead warriors. Demon Spirits possess the bones and over time, warp them in to horrific shapes. This separation between the Demon’s spirit and the warrior’s body may explain why the Cleanse Ritual is harder, but it is certainly the explanation of the biggest surprise the Pilgrims will face. Dead White Bone Demons are left on the board and if Yara can attract another Demon Spirit, these piles of bones may spring back to life!

We also intend that some of these new components can be used in the base game. Perhaps not the lair tile and Yara, but Demons roamed the lands and the game will play well if you mix a few White Bone Demons into the Demon Deck and replay some Quests from Journey.

So you all want to know the cost. The expansion is $48 with no extra shipping, even though it adds a lot to the weight. We also have resin Add-Ons:

Yara, the White Bone Queen for $20
1 Yagara Bone Beast for $20
1 Yangu Bone General for $15
1 Yataru Bone Warrior for $10
And a plastic Bundle is available, 1 x Yangu Bone General, 1 x Yagara Bone Beast and 3 x Yataru Bone Warriors for $20. If you don’t want the full expansion but would like some variety or you want to boost the expansion for home brew Quests, perhaps this Bone Bundle is what you need. All Add-Ons contain the cards to play the Demons, but not the new Condition Cards and Skill Cards.

Which brings us to the next Stretch Goal at $300K. We know that this expansion is not for everyone, but it would be great for you all to get a little benefit from this new work. With two Yataru Bone Warriors in the Boxed Game Upgrade (with cards, of course) everyone can get a taste of what these scuttling Demons are like. Bring some variation to your game and get a feel for the expansion without getting it.

Currently $205 gets you everything in plastic (excluding international shipping) IF you pledge in the next few hours:

Base Game + stretches = $100
Expansion = $48
5 Soul Hunters/Cleansers = $22
4 Hopping Vampires + coffin = $15
1 Resin Centipede Demon = $20
1 TIME LIMITED alt female Tripitaka for free, otherwise $5 in plastic

If you're planning on going from that to the Deluxe level (which will have all 6 pilgrims in resin, a few scenery tokens and a hodgepodge of other monsters) that's another $60 (it costs $80 more, but includes the $20 centipede demon).

...and in one of the stranger bonuses I've seen, going over $320 pledged gets you a free resin Hopping Vampire.

Update #61 Nov 18, 2013
Yataru Bone Warriors Abound

We are stunned. We were really pleased with the art for the White Bone Demons, but we did not expect the expansion to explode like this. We are so pleased that this is as popular with our backers as it is here in the Marrow Production office. We have not even had a chance to show you the larger concept art from A.J. Manzanedo. Once again, we must say how pleased we are to work with him.

The $300K Stretch Goal is unlocked, a great milestone for our project. All backers receiving Boxed Game Upgrades will get 2 Yataru Bone Warriors and their game cards. If you get the White Bone Demon expansion pack, you will have a few more minis to use. You will find great uses, but with more minis, you will defer the “out of minis” rule for a few turns as you play with a bigger horde, swarming around the Pilgrims.

If you are thinking of getting the expansion later, at least you get to see one type of Bone Demon miniature now, and will get a feel for how its game stats make the Bone Demons different from the Bull Demons. Just mix the Yataru Bone Warriors cards into the Demon Deck and let then spawn at random in the Bull Demon Quests.

Anyone remember the Alternate Female Tripitaka mini? We said that we could cast her in plastic if we made to $300K. She will be free for anyone that pledges within the next few hours. If you join us before Monday 18, Nov 4:00pm EST, you might get one free:

Beat the deadline and get Boxed Game Upgrades at the end: You get a plastic Female Tripitaka.
Beat the deadline and get Collectors Upgrades at the end: You get a resin Female Tripitaka.
Only one free gift for each backer. The female Tripitaka is used instead of the original mini. Use the original Game Cards.

What’s next? Well, well, well. What’s next? A Collectors Upgrade, the water well.

Also, you forgot the best part of the update though:

Hopefully the wells don't slow progress down too much. Bigger stretches for not as exciting pieces seems a risky gamble.

Nice to see they tossed a few skeletons in the main box for everyone to get a taste of how they work. I don't know if I want to go in for the whole expansion at this point, but I do like the option of getting some of the new enemies in plastic as a bundle.

Another game play update, this one focusing on 'The Demon Phase'.

Update #62 Nov 19, 2013
Game Play Update #14 – The Demon Phase
Comment Like 13 likes
In the last rules update, we left you with Demons popping up adjacent to the spawn gates, in the squares close to Tripitaka, ready to move towards him (click here). What’s next? In this update we will give you information about the rest of the Demon Phase.

Once spawned, demons are activated in turn and, like Pilgrims, take two Actions each. We recommend that you start with the Demon closest to Tripitaka and work backwards. Play both actions for one Demon and then activate the next.

Demons have a much shorter list of actions that can be performed, actually just two, Attack and Move. And with two action points, they perform actions in that order, Attack and then Move.

So first, Demons attack. We have given you the details for attacking in earlier updates, so you understand the principles. Check the Demon Profile Sheet for the Attack Range icon for targeting and the attack dice you will use, look up the defense dice from Pilgrim’s Profile Sheet and the damage taken by the Pilgrim is the difference in the attack and defense rolls. However, there is one difference! You saw on the Pilgrims’ Profile Sheet, that the Pilgrims select one target in Attack Range. Many of the Pilgrims enemies are powerful creatures with big sweeping attacks. Their Attack Range icon may say All Targets. Yes, the Demon may attack all Targets standing in the Attack Range. Each attack is rolled for separately. Don’t bunch your Pilgrims up together!

The Attack Dice are specified on the Demon Profile Sheet. Most minion Demons use just two red Attack Dice. Tougher Demons, like the three Bull Demon bosses, also roll the black Demon Die, and the results for that die are printed on their Profile Sheet. Think of it as being similar to the unique weapon that each Pilgrim has, controlled by the white Pilgrim Die. A Demon Die result could be as simple as extra damage, but it may produce a more powerful effect, like an ongoing Condition, Poisoned, Burned, Paralyzed, etc.

The second action is to Move. If a Demon does not have a valid target for the first Action Point, the Demon can take a double Move (one normal move with double the MV points). Demons are really trying to hunt Tripitaka, so their move will be along the shortest path towards Tripitaka’s current position. They move just like Pilgrims, one point per square and one point per 90º change in facing. When they move towards Tripitaka, they stop moving as soon as he is in their Attack Range, so the Demons with longer range attacks, will automatically hang back.

The most complex part of the demons move will be selecting the path. Think of them as simple creatures like dogs. They will go round small obstacles (scenery or other Demons, even trying to move around the other Pilgrims to get to Tripitaka). They will also plot longer paths, going around the walls of buildings to a broken door, to chase down Pilgrims that are inside structures. They will also move from one tile to another crossing over the bridges just like Pilgrims.

However, they do not coordinate their attacks like humans. Just start by moving the closest Demon towards Tripitaka. If the first mini rushes forwards and gets in the way of another Demon with a longer or double move, that’s the way it happens. Demons do not organize their movement for the best result.

The rule book will have many examples of moves in more and more complex situations.

So now you can see some strategy in the game. If you leave the Pilgrims bunched up near Demons, perhaps because you ganged up to attack and failed, you risk each Demon making multiple attacks. From the movement rules, you can see that you can lure demons along a certain path. If only there was some kind of neutral creature that would attack anything stupid enough to come too close. Some kind of heavenly creature, perhaps…

There is still some more to cover. Quests, the whole turn sequence and some details of the larger characters.

From a pure rules perspective, I think this retains some of the interesting aspects of games like Zombiecide while reducing a lot of the timewasting cruft.

One of the most important aspects of Zombiecide is that the heroes are quite fragile, but (initially) easy to keep alive thanks to the basic Zombies either moving OR attacking - if you make sure you end movement in a different square to an enemy, you're safe for a turn. It makes you think carefully about movement.

It's the same thing here - if you end your turn outside a monster's immediate attack range, it cannot touch you. The multitude of different attack areas do mean you'll have to keep track of this quite thoroughly though...

Likewise, the rules for pathing in Zombiecide got quite stupid at times - in theory you had to keep track of the noise that every action produced, and do a quick calculation to work out which groups moved where. Despite this, 95% of the time they moved towards the biggest nearest group.

Again, no such worries here - they are trying to reach and kill one character, and will take the most appropriate actions to do so! Time will tell whether the "just use common sense/it doesn't matter too much" approach will work in practice though.

Update #63 Nov 19, 2013
Last Leg of the Journey
20 comments Like 28 likes
We have posted more Stretch Goals, without full details. You have seen us hide the details of future Stretch Goals before, so this should be no surprise, but today we want to share more information about what is happening.

The Stretch Goals shown at the moment are not the only goals we will post in the next few days, but they are the biggest and most exciting. We are posting them now, so you can plan how you want to finish your journey.

As you can expect, the second Heavenly Creature and the second expansion are Add-Ons. We do not expect most of you to get all these large Add-Ons and we want to give you time to think before the rush of the final day. We want to give you time to decide which ones you prefer. You also have some payment options to consider. We’d hate for you to make a mistake at the end.

Get them at retail. We hope to bring Journey, both expansions and the second Heavenly Creature to retail after the KS Fulfillment. You will not be the first to get them, they might not have the bonus items and they might be a little more expensive, but you will have the advantage of playing the game first and being sure you want them.
Get them by increasing your pledge post project, in the Pledge Manager. There will be a Pledge Manager, it will allow you to add funds and select items, but funds pledged this way will not open new Stretch Goals. We cannot say when the Pledge Manager will open or close right now.
Finally, of course, you could pledge during the campaign as normal and push the pledge total along, perhaps unlocking more goals, improving the game or expansions.
So think of this as a rough road map to help you. Not all the sites are marked on this road map - there might be more Upgrades, Gifts, small Add-Ons and Bundles to come. But the Heavenly Creature and second expansion are the only new, big ticket items.

We know some backers pre-pledge to help open goals. With the last days approaching, be careful. You can only actually get the Add-Ons that have been unlocked.

We were in such a rush when the White Bone Demons came out, we did not have a chance to share all the art that A.J. created for us. Here’s some more, enjoy!

And the second

Update #64 Nov 19, 2013
A Place to Recover

We have crossed a lot of ground in the last few days, which is all down to you. We could not do this without you.

Now we are at $320K, all backers getting the Collectors Upgrades will receive one more resin scenery miniature, the Water Well. In the game, the Water Well is used for healing. Pilgrims moving adjacent to the Well can fully heal, but they are only able to use each Well once. Wait until you’re really sick and it will give you the most benefit. Wait too long and, well, don’t wait too long.

It will be added to the resin Add-On list for $3. Like all scenery Add-Ons it is completely optional – you already have color cardboard tokens in the box. You could get one Water Well and move it to the center of the action. But if you want to create a little 3D world on your table top and feel you need more, we would say 4 is a good upper limit.

We said there might be more Stretch Goals to come and here is a new one already! If we get to $330K, we will add 1 more plastic Yangu Bone General to the White Bone Demon Expansion Pack. Who gets it? Everyone getting the White Bone Demon Expansion Pack. The banner is on the front page, but take a look at the Art by A.J. Manzanedo. It’s great!

Finally, the Bone General Expansion Upgrade will be followed by a second Heavenly Creature. More details to come, but there is some confusion in the comments that we did not anticipate. The core game already includes Kei Lun, our first Heavenly Creature. He is the largest miniature in the box, about 125mm high and he is gorgeous. Ray is adding the finishing touches and you will see him soon. But the Heavenly Creature in the Stretch Goal is not Kei Lun, it is a different Heavenly Creature. Be careful, here be dragons.

So after giving it some thought, I'm going to switch out from an EB Collecter to a single journey with a bunch of add ons.

I'll switch today at 2:00/ 14:00 PST.

Thought I'd give Dakka a heads up if any of you want my spot.

Update #65 Nov 20, 2013
Expansion Upgrade
11 comments Like 15 likes
As the journey draws to its close, your help has pushed us past one more milestone. Our first upgrade to our first expansion!

By reaching $330K, we have unlocked our first Expansion Upgrade. We can include one more plastic miniature, and the associated cards, with the Expansion – 1 more Yangu Bone General to be precise. So now, everyone that gets the White Bone Demon Expansion will receive:

Yara, the White Bone Queen, an oversize mini approximately 70mm tall, with a 2 square base.
1 Yagara Bone Beast, an oversize mini approximately 40mm tall/65 mm long, with a 2 square base.
2+1 Yangu Bone Generals
6 Yataru Bone Warriors
4 Demon Profile Sheets, a new Demon Deck, new Skill Cards
1 new Map Tile For Yara’s lair
New Quests
Like the other upgrades, this is free and automatic. There is no change in the cost or shipping and you don’t need to do anything to get it, apart from selecting the White Bone Demon Expansion in the pledge manager once the project closes.

Did you read any of that? Or did you just skip to the bottom, looking to see if the Dragon is next? Yes, the Dragon is next! Up next, our second Heavenly Creature, Qinglong. This will be a very large miniature (larger than Kei Lun!), more cards than you might expect and Qinglong-specific Quests.

Qinglong can also be used in the existing Quests. Before we sign off, this teaser is some early concept art from A.J. Manzanedo. More details and art if we reach $350K and unlock him.

I really don't see the point of not offering the option of plastic Yataru Bone Warriors. As long as they are going to be produced anyway in plastic there is no reason of this. I would like to make a unit out of them and a cost of 5$ each would be a acceptable...

This of course creates a bit of a dilemma! I think the number of people who can afford everything in the Kickstarter is going to be rather few. On the other hand, something like that dragon is either going to be impossible to find or prohibitively expensive to buy in the UK (where $60 games retail for £60). What I buy in the Kickstarter is realistically all that I'm going to ever buy for this game, and I want to make sure that I'm getting a "complete" enough experience.

Also - the size of that thing! This is a boardgaming piece - how are you supposed to store it?

That...

...that's a big dragon. What the hell kind of base structure is that thing going to have? How will it even fit on the game tiles?

That's like Kaladrax/ Dragons Don't Share big.

Which means it's really tempting.

Yea, it's going to be crazy big and I wondered about storage for it as well since this is a 54mm game.

That dragon would easily dominate a dining table.

A wild update appears!

Kei Lun, First Look.
15 comments Like 19 likes
Keeping on top of this campaign slowed us a little, but Kei Lun is ready for his début. We have photos, back story, game play info and even a stop motion video! It’s a work in progress, but we are very pleased with the way it looks so far.

Let’s start with Kei Lun emerging from the clay:

PLAY
Ray has the structure of Kei Lun complete, but the textures need to be applied to the whole surface. This would include large scales, fine texture on the skin and hair, and more details around the claws. He has samples of these textures on different parts of the image, so you can see how this will progress.

You can see this is a large miniature, sitting on a base 4 squares in size and over 120mm tall. In the montage below, you can see Kei Lun dominates the Monkey King, who is not your typical 28mm.

Kei Lun is the first Heavenly Creature the Pilgrims will encounter on their journey, a huge mythical beast that even they are surprised actually exists. At first, they do not recognise Kei Lun as the Heavenly Creature from whispered stories. In antiquity, this fantastic animal was known to be wise and generous, able to peer into your soul and judge your nature. Normally gentle, Kei Lun would help the good and only punish the evil when absolutely necessary. But since the seal to the underworld was broken, the Demons have upset the balance both in the world and in Kei Lun, changing him beyond recognition. Quick to anger and fight, Kei Lun’s skin flickers with fire and he can only see the over abundance of malevolence surrounding him. Mistaking everyone as wicked, Kei Lun paces frantically, attacking at random.

In the game Kei Lun is a neutral creature. He moves in a specific region, not chasing the Pilgrims or Demons. If anything moves into his attack range, he lashes out immediately. Pilgrims can try to lure Demons into his grasp, but there are times when they have to fight him themselves, to retrieve items he possesses.

The profile sheet for Heavenly Creatures has a sliding Health Bar, like the Pilgrims. He is not a “One Shot Kill” and the Pilgrims can attack him in a war of attrition. His attack range is large, so it is hard for the Pilgrims to approach him, but easier for them to lure Demons into his range. Damage from his attacks is the total of two Attack Dice and the Pilgrim Die, and if Kei Lun rolls 1 or more on the Pilgrim Die, his assault will also leave the Pilgrims with the Burned Condition, so they will take ongoing damage. Unlike the Bull Demons, Kei Lun has a defense die and will defend against the Pilgrims attacks. It will be a tough fight!

Only a few reward levels include the Kei Lun resin miniature, for example the Resin Master, Deluxe Journey and some of the larger rewards. At the moment, we need to make fewer than 75 copies. The Kei Lun resin miniature will not be offered as an Add-On here but it may be sold at retail later, at normal market prices. However, we do not expect this to be a common miniature in circulation. As part of this Kickstarter fulfillment, Ray and I will inspect each resin Kei Lun and sign a numbered certificate showing where in the batch the resin Kei Lun was produced. This certificate will be included in your package. The numbered and signed certificates will only be created for the resin Kei Lun miniatures that are shipped to KS backers as part of this project. Just to be clear, the resin miniature is not a Kickstarter exclusive, but the numbered and signed certificates will be.

Finally, in Update 63, we said we might reveal more stretch goals and gifts. Since then we have posted two new Boxed Game Upgrades and now it’s time for a gift. With the possibility of two expansions and Qinglong, we know some of you could be making large pledges. We would like to announce a second Warrior Monk gift. All backers whose pledge (including shipping) is over $320, will receive a second free miniature, a plastic Yagara Bone Beast, with game cards. This will boost Yara’s forces if you get the White Bone Demon Expansion, and can be used in all other scenarios to provide some variety.

Marrow have actually been quite keen to stress that people should not go overboard with their pledges - I think they've seen other Kickstarters where people have leaped in with unrealistic pledges and dropped them close to the end. Everything you don't get at the $100 level will be available at retail, apart from the centipede demon.

To be clear though, this isn't a choice between big dragon and bigger dragon - these are the 4 Heavenly Creatures from the original legend, and have their own stats, unique rules and quests. I'm just not willing to give up an entire expansion to buy this one!

Oh, yeah, I got that they were different, just felt that one big dragon was enough. The other character seemed huge and maybe even plain out of scale for a small skirmish sort of thing.

Also, was confused about the centepede demon- why's that guy KS-exclusive? just 'cause?

Post by: Bioptic

I think because they wanted to do a sub-boss character that wasn't tied to a boxed game or expansion, and the profitability of a producing a single unique optional enemy in plastic was low, so they decided resin-only. Once you're doing resin-only for a boardgame piece, you might as well try to maximise sales by making it KS exclusive. Also, it encourages people to jump to premium tier: if you're going to buy the centipede anyway, then it's 'only' 60 dollars extra to get extra copies of all 5 pilgrims in resin, scenery and a few monsters!

Hm.. so the "get everything" sort of pledge now appears to be:

$100 Single Journey
$48 White Bone expack
$22 Soul Hunters
$20 Centipede Beast
$38 Big Arse Dragon
+ postage

This misses out on some scenery, etc, but this is more or less everything at the cheapest available prices?

It's part of the base box contents in plastic. In resin... it's really hard to get apparently.

In the box art, the Kei Lun image is blacked out because they didn't have the art till now.

I think I'm going to have to deal with most of those add-ons via the Pledge Manager. This has gone from a AU$150 to a $300 purchase, and that's more than I can afford in one hit right now. Of course, I could always... Alph? Want to finish that sentence for me?

Update #68 Nov 22, 2013
Journey is More Heavenly

We are so pleased to unlock Qinglong! We have the best backers!

There were many types of Heavenly Creatures in ancient China, and now we have two. Everyone will get Kei Lun in the core game, and you have the option to get Qinglong as an Add-On.

Qinqlong is a Water Dragon, grown large and powerful over many centuries. At home in water and tuned to nature, Qinqlong can manipulate the weather, bringing torrential rainstorms. Qinqlong guards a magical pearl that can be used to create masterful weapons. But no-one has been able to retrieve the pearl from Qinqlong’s horde of treasure, although many have tried.

In the game, Qinqlong is a second large, powerful neutral creature. He is supplied with quests where the Pilgrims try to gain the Magical Pearl, to create new weapons. So, as well as Qinqlong’s profile sheet, special rules and cards for spawning him in other scenarios, Qinqlong comes with 5 new Weapons Cards, that the Pilgrims can use in these new Quests, once they have the Pearl.

All games manufacturers face an issue with dragons, balancing scale, the difficulty of making large miniatures, and cost. In the distant past of miniature gaming, dragons cast in metal were often tiny or at best smaller than true scale would suggest. Even now, when new materials give manufacturer’s options for larger miniatures, there are still cost issues and dragons are rarely the size gamers imagine. By including Kei Lun in the core game box, we have already set the bar high for large miniatures, and we felt we had no choice other than to make Qinqlong larger still. The concept art gives you an idea of his size, Qinqlong will be larger than Kei Lun and will dwarf the other miniatures. Remember, Monkey is over 50mm tall.

We still have one problem, he cannot take up the whole board! We will re-pose him in a more upright position, so his base is a reasonable size for the game. This pose will also be more dynamic, as it will catch him in mid-attack. We think Qinqlong fits perfectly into our game, but if any gamer is looking for an imposing dragon miniature, we think Qinqlong could easily cross over into other genres.

This magnificent beast cannot be manufactured cheaply. The Qinqlong Add-On is priced at $38 in plastic and $90 in resin. Both packages include all game cards and quests. We expect the resin Qinqlong will be produced in fewer numbers than the resin Kei Lun and we will create signed and numbered certificates for this resin miniature again. As part of this Kickstarter fulfillment, Ray and I will inspect each resin Kei Lun and sign a numbered certificate showing where in the batch each resin Qinglong was produced. This certificate will be included in your package. Just to be clear, the resin miniature is not a Kickstarter exclusive, but the numbered and signed certificates will be.

Next we have another Expansion Upgrade for everyone that gets the White Bone Demon Expansion. We will add two new map tiles to the expansion pack, giving you more of the mountainous territory that the White Bone Demons inhabit. We will change the Quests to use these boards, too.

And more goals from the front page.

and just 219 backers away from this goal:

Update #69 Nov 22, 2013
Spider Demons Teaser and More
20 comments Like 25 likes
Backers, we would like to share the concept art for the second expansion to Journey: Wrath of Demons. On this stretch of the journey, the Pilgrims stray into the Silk Cave, the Lair of Zige, Queen of the Spider Demons. Can the Pilgrims escape her web with another piece of the Sutras?
Video Link

We have less than 24hrs to go. We really hope we can unlock this expansion, those large eight legged miniatures will be such fun to work on! And you know us by now, if we can pass this goal, we will upgrade the expansion and maybe give a little bit away for free!

To save overloading your mail box, we will include some information on the next two goals here. If they unlock, we will just update the banners on the front page.

At $370K, we will add two Map Tiles to the White Bone Demon expansion, for a total of 3. This will give you more of their rocky scenery to traverse, before you get to Yara’s lair. We will also add to the quests included in this expansion, making great use of the extra Map Tiles. Even Monkey cannot predict the future, but we can see the pledge total moving and we really hope we can make it this far.

The $380K Stretch Goal is a Boxed Game Upgrade that will ensure that everyone has a little scenery. We will add one of the plastic bridges to the rewards for all backers getting Boxed Game Upgrades. But that is not all. We will include a new card Bridge Tile with this upgrade, it has new background art and incorporates Bridge C. This will be especially useful for people creating their own quests and playing with the Nightmare Deck, as you can join another Map Tile on to your playing area and make the game board even larger.

Just 205 backers away from the door set now.

Update #70 Nov 22, 2013
The Spider Demon Expansion
6 comments Like 14 likes
The Spider Demon Expansion gives the Pilgrims a chance to retrieve the third piece of the sundered Sutras. But before Tripitaka can assemble more of the sacred scroll, his band will have to defeat the Spider Demons. The book describes them as “seductive spider spirits, half beautiful women, half spider”. Take a quick look at the horrifying concept art by Pablo Fernandez.

In the Silk Cave, high in the Silk Mountains, Zige the Spider Demon Queen spins her webs of the toughest silk. Her minions weave traps of sticky cobwebs and wait for unsuspecting prey to become ensnared. Will they feast on our brave travellers?

Once again, we will introduce new game play elements with the Spider Demons. These Demons fight at longer range, spitting poison and throwing spider web nets. Pilgrims will be more likely to suffer on-going conditions, like Poisoned and a new condition Entangled. Webs act as traps that hold the Pilgrims and attract the Demons when the Pilgrims are entangled. Each Demon moves towards the closest entangled Pilgrim, and may get to attack while the Pilgrim is unable to defend: an entangled target cannot use the Defense Dice.

The contents of the Spider Demon Expansion will be similar to the White Bone Demon Expansion when it was first announced. If we can push the pledge total higher in the last few hours of the project, we will add more items to the expansion. The price will be $48, and when first unlocked it will include:

Zige the Spider Demon Queen
2 Ziran Spider Demon Generals
2 Zahe Spider Demon Priests
5 Zigi Spider Demons Warriors
One new Map Tile
New Demon Profile Sheets and Condition Cards
Demon Spawning Cards
New Pilgrims Skill Cards
There will also be resin add-ons. With their distended abdomens and multiple arms, these are large miniatures:

Zige the Spider Demon Queen - $20
Ziran Spider Demon General - $20
Zahe Spider Demon Priest - $15
Zigi Spider Demon Warrior - $15
We have a plastic bundle that you can use to add a few Spider Demons to your core game if you do not want the full expansion right now. Or use them to boost the Spider Queen’s army, but don’t forget the bundle is optional and the Spider Demon expansion has enough minis for normal play. The bundle is $20:

1x Ziran Spider Demon General
1x Zahe Spider Demon Priest
3x Zigi Spider Demon Warriors
As well as revealing this Expansion, we will now show many related stretch goals (banners to come!) We really hope we can enhance this expansion before we deliver it to you.

410K Quest 5-Pack
420K Box Game Upgrade 1 plastic Zigi Spider Demon Warrior
430K Expansion Upgrade +1 Zigi Spider Demon Warrior, +1 Zahe Spider Demon Priest
440K Expansion Upgrade +1 Map Tile (2 in total)
450K Collectors Upgrade resin 1 Ziran Spider Demon General
460K Expansion Upgrade +1 Map Tile (3 in total)
All miniatures come with game cards. These bonus miniatures can be used with the Spider Demon Expansion, or shuffled into the spawn deck of the core game to provide some variety.

We hope most of these are obvious by now, but let us explain the Quest 5-Pack. We want to write a second collection of 5 linked Quests that tell a 5 part story. The extra Bridge Tile from the $380K goal will allow us to write one truly huge Quest. These Quests will be available for download from the Journey Forums.

Eleven hours left and they give us another game play update.

Update #71 Nov 22, 2013
Game Play Update #15 – Quests
4 comments Like 13 likes
We are nearing the end of our rules updates. If you are new to the project, you can skip back through them, starting here.

Quests are our name for a single game you setup and play. You might call them scenarios or just games, but Quest fits our theme. The rule book will specify 10 Quests that are linked in a chain to tell a story. Let’s call them Narrative Quests. As you play them in order, we will increase the complexity of the Demons and scenery items, so they act as a kind of tutorial. And by telling you there is a story and calling them Narrative Quests, we hope you can see that we would spoil some of the fun by revealing everything here.

The first Narrative Quest will be played on just two map tiles and experienced players can play it in 15 minutes, but as your first outing, it may take longer. The longest Narrative Quest is played on 7 map tiles and could take you 2 hours, so there is a lot of variation.

The Narrative Quest description in the rule book tells you everything you need to know to set up and play. There will be pictures of the game board showing where to place the Pilgrims, tokens like gates, doors, wells and mystical boxes. It will have the victory and loss conditions and any special rules.

There are simple victory conditions, like closing the gates and killing all Demons that have been placed on the board or moving to a certain part of the board, sometimes within a time limit. Others are to recover items by searching specific locations. Yet others are more cinematic, with the Quest ending immediately a Boss Demon is defeated, before you kill or cleanse him. The Quest closes with him escaping, ready to fight another day.

So here is a setup diagram from the rule book. Using icons (which we showed you in a much earlier update) it tells you where to place and face the Pilgrims, some Demons who are on the map already, and some card scenery tokens. You can use the scenery miniatures if you have them. Hopefully you recognise the icons, MK – the Monkey King, BW – Bull Warrior, etc. There are special rules for this Quest, the Bull Warrior inside the building does not move until the doors are broken down and similarly, the gate in the room does not activate until the doors are opened. The victory condition is to have one Pilgrim search the Mystical Box when there are no Demons on the map.

Longer Narrative Quests have side quests, optional goals to be completed. If you complete them, you will get a reward that will make the rest of the Quest much easier, but while you are trying to complete the side quest, you might fail overall. For example, if you have to protect villagers from the Demons for a certain number of turns. If you stop to defend the villagers, Demons will be spawning all around you and you will not be advancing towards the victory condition. If you make a mistake and a villager is killed, then with the extra Demons on the map and no reward for the side quest, you will be in trouble.

Special rules override the standard rules. There is a scenario where Tripitaka has been taken captive. He battles to defend himself, while the 3 other pilgrims try to rescue him, but in this scenario, the Demons swarm towards the Monkey King, not Tripitaka. Other special rules include only activating distant Spawn Gates when you finally approach them and make specific Demons stay put until you approach them (the Bull Demon King does not run about like crazy!).

We hope there is some replay value in these Quests. You can control a different Pilgrim, mix different Demons into the spawn deck, play with deliberately different styles like rushing, mainly killing, mainly cleansing, taking all or taking no side quests. Those of you that get the Soul Hunters and Soul Cleansers can use your allies sometimes. But there is more to the game than these Narrative Quests.

While playing the Narrative Quests you will not only learn the rules, but also how Quests are setup and what you enjoy most about the game. We will give you instructions for creating Custom Quests. You will select the Map Tiles, the scenery, the side quests and victory conditions. Through your experience playing and these general instructions, you will have a good idea of how to construct Quests that are fun and have the right degree of difficulty for your gaming group.

We are planning a forum where you can discuss the game, clarify rules and post images of your painted miniatures. But also we want people to post their own Quests here, Quest walkthroughs (you might call them battle reports), and discuss the Quests that are posted. So those of you that make, and even fine tune, Custom Quests can show them to world. There is nothing to stop you creating and sharing linked Custom Quests, just like the Narrative Quests in the box. Your house rules can become special rules for your Quests, you might become famous in the forum for your designs! We will endeavour to do the same, posting our own Quests to this forum, although we will not make promises as to the frequency these will appear.

So we hope you see that this is not simply traversing the board from one side to another. The Quest system makes one game different from the next and even the same Quest can be replayed in many different ways.

It looks like a pretty fun light weight game- I'm getting it to compliment Kingdom Death (which I expect to be very rules-y) as a co-op game, in part because I didn't get in on Myth and wanted something a little more fun and less brutal.

It looks like pretty simple rules and little bookkeeping. It's what I'm most dubious about, but the minis, aesthetic, and creators' attitude (which has very clearly avoided the hard sell/huge upgrade mentality of a lot of KS's) has sold me on it. Not going all in, but happy to drop a little more than $100 on something with a good attitude that's different.

My impression is that it is focused on narrative, tactical item/skill use and positioning. The story-based nature means that you're (theoretically) not doing the standard dungeon-crawl 'breach and clear' each time, which makes it more appealing for group play. The large variety of enemies with different attack types/areas means that you're essentially solving puzzles of how to minimise attacks on you, lure enemies into dangerous areas, and blocking the path to Tripitaka.

Crucially for a co-op game, it looks to be highly scalable and reasonably fast to play. Plenty of co-op board games are just flat out hard from the off, and once you've solved the puzzle have no more appeal, but this gives you so many choices! The kill/purify mechanic adds an interesting risk/reward dimension as well.

I think the only slightly gimmicky things are the karma spinner (which is just a fancier way of doing a coin flip!), and the card wheels attached to the character cards (for karma/damage tracking I think), which I can see wearing out.

I need more co-op games that might actually see some play (so have a ~2 hour play time rather than a ~5 one like Arkham Horror frequently does), and the theme appeals to me massively more than Myth, Kingdom Death or Shadows of Brimstone did.

Damn, thought this was just about daemons (which I am not interedted in).
Nobody told me that it is Chinese daemons! And I love Chinese mythology (and Spider daemons)!
Will eventually get game and both supplements and some add ons (mostly plastic because of wrong scale), but pledge now for game only (because of the other kickstarters) and pay the rest with pledge manager. but I am in at the last minute! i love it when games are inspiring and full of atmosphere like this!

Oh, and of course thanks to Q0rbin for keeping this thread and the first post updated

Two hours left and I have two updates to share.

Update #72 Nov 23, 2013
Koorogg the Bull Demon
11 comments Like 18 likes
Journey: Wrath of Demons ends with a climactic battle against Koorogg, the Bull Demon King, so it seems fitting that our final update about the game is about Koorogg himself. This art by A.J. Manzanedo is one of our favorite images from the game and seeing it was a defining moment for us, knowing that we were starting a great collaboration with A.J.

Koorogg the Bull Demon King is a brutal but brave warrior and champion of his clan. When the seal was broken, he and the other Demons rushed forth to start their invasion of Terra. Together with his wife, Empress Iron Fan and his son Kogaiji, they expanded their borders and control most of the regions in Great Tang. Most importantly, he boasts of possessing one of the lost pieces of the Sutras which is why the four Pilgrims are searching for him.

If you read on, you will see spoilers for the final battle in the game. You may wish to skip this update or take a quick peek at the images and stop there.

As a Warrior King, Koorogg will appear from time to time in the early Narrative Quests. For example, in some quests, Bull Demon Generals are summoned with the spawn deck, but special Quest rules say that if a General is summoned and the Pilgrims have received several Good Karma Rewards, Koorogg will be summoned instead. In these random confrontations, he cannot be killed. If the Pilgrims defeat him, he escapes before they can kill or cleanse him.

From his stats, you can see that the Bull Demon King is indeed a mighty Warrior. Pilgrims need to roll 7 or more damage to generate a “one shot kill”. In retaliation, the Bull Demon King rolls three dice for his attack. The black Demon Die is explained at the bottom of his Profile Sheet. It generates extra points of damage for each number rolled, but if he rolls a 2 or 3, the Pilgrim receives a Disabled or Paralysed on-going condition. And Koorogg rolls attacks against all Pilgrims inside his large attack range.

We touched on random encounters with Koorogg, but in the final Narrative Quest, the Pilgrims have tracked him to his lair. Normally, Map Tiles are separated by Bridge Tiles when the game board is set up. For the Bull Demon King’s lair, three Map Tiles are placed together to represent one massive cave.

The Pilgrims arrive here after battling through outdoor tiles as part of the same quest. It will truly be a titanic struggle. But it will allow them to gain Good Karma rewards and search for Skill Cards, so that they are fully buffed. In this quest, they do not face just the Bull Demon King. They face Kogaiji, the Empress Iron Fan and finally Koorogg in the last chamber of the cave. Special rules include keeping the Boss Demons stationary until the Pilgrims step on to the Map Tile with them. In this fight, the victory condition is to cleanse Koorogg and collect the first piece of the Sutras, ending the final Quest.

Spider Demon Expansion

Backers! You astound us! We knew there was a slim chance we could unlock this second expansion, but this amazing.

This close to the end of the campaign, we will only be making short updates. First a quick recap:

$370K: +2 Map Tiles in the White Bone Demon Expansion – UNLOCKED

$380K: BGU - Plastic Bridge and 5th Card Bridge Tile – UNLOCKED

$400K: Our second expansion The Spider Demons – UNLOCKED!!!!!

We are so pleased to be able make this expansion. Take a look at some more art for these minis:

Now, things are really moving, let’s see if we can give you more goodies! First, another 5-Part Narrative Quest. Help Monkey recover his lost Jingu Staff.

Update #74 Nov 23, 2013
Quests Unlocked and XXL size T-Shirt!
11 comments Like 14 likes
Tripitaka is a young monk, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Tripitaka knows that only he has be power to seal the Demons back in the underworld and this will only be possible if the band can recover the Sutras. The Monkey King, on the other hand, is a light hearted trickster, telling the world he is only in the band for the adventure! But his relaxed and careless attitude has caused disaster. Somewhere in his travels, he has dropped the size-changing Jingu staff and the Pilgrims must back track to recover it.

We will construct the quests around the core game and BGU upgrades. These Quests will be perfect for Kickstarter backers, who will have extra components, compared to the future retail purchasers. We will also add instructions that give you the option to include parts from the expansions. Monkey will not be using the Jingu Staff in these Quests. We will give the stats for new weapons to use in each quest, which you can “print and play”.

Next stretch goal:

In all this rush, we forgot to post some information. Our T-shirt manufacturer has agreed to make XXL sized shirts. We have updated the Add-On list on the front page. We hope it is not too late for those of you that wanted one.

Update #75 Nov 23, 2013
New Miniature
5 comments Like 19 likes
Things are racing now!

You have unlocked another free miniature for all backers receiving Boxed Game Upgrades, a plastic Zigi Spider Demon Warrior, with game cards. If you opt for the second expansion, Zige will have a larger force, but the Zigi Spider Demon Warrior can be used in the base game by mixing her spawn card into the deck and have her show up at random. You will all be able to play with this mini.

Next, we have an Expansion Upgrade. Everyone pledging for the Spider Demon Expansion will receive two more plastic miniatures, if we can get this far. 1 Priest and 1 Warrior will be added to the game making Zige’s clan more deadly.

We hope everyone that wanted an XXL T-Shirt got to see the announcement. Sorry for making this change so late.

Update #76 Nov 24, 2013
Empress Iron Fan – Work In Progress shots
12 comments Like 15 likes
The most beautiful woman in all of Terra and a former princess of Great Tang, Yazuiji always had too much ambition for her own good. Her father, the Emperor Tang, possessed an iron fan that can create giant whirlwinds, a powerful magic item whose origin in lost in the mists of time. Yazuiji covets both his title and the magic item and sees her chance to gain both when the Demons invade.

Using her beauty as an enchantment, Yazuiji takes the Bull Demon King Koorogg as her husband and convinces him to kill her father, leaving her free to take the title and the fan. Obsessed by both, she adopts the name Empress Iron Fan and rules the Empire with no love for her subjects, slowly growing more corrupt under the Demons’ influence. When the Monkey King asks to borrow the Iron Fan to cool the lava flowing from the Bull Demon’s lair, she does not hesitate to attack.

A powerful Boss Demon, with her high health, fast move and long range attack, Empress Iron Fan will give the Pilgrims a tough fight. Will Monkey be able to take the Iron Fan from her, to stop the lava’s flow?

Ray is working on Yazuiji as we speak. Getting these pictures was as hard for me as getting the Iron Fan was for Monkey! I hope you like them.

Destination Reached
Is it all over? Or has it just begun?

Marrow Production has grown incredibly in past 39 days. From two guys with a silly idea to a game production company with the funding to make a core game, several “blister pack” miniatures, and 2 solid expansions. None of this would be possible without you. We can’t thank you enough.

Two people cannot do this alone. We have too many people to thank by name here, but we will thank them in person as our next task. So much of what we have shown you would not be here, if it were not for the work of other people, toiling behind the scenes.

Our main focus for the next 8 months will be to deliver the best game we can to our backers. There is a lot to do, from finishing the sculpts, balancing the quests, to striking final deals with production companies. Trust us, we will be working to maximise the quality of the game for our backers first and we will only think about our retail plans in our “spare time”. Your needs will come first. The best way we can thank you is to make Journey: Wrath of Demons everything it can be.

These 39 days were a wild ride. We funded the core game on day one, added female playable characters, scenery, Ugragosa a KS exclusive miniature, the Yau Demons, the Soul Hunters and Cleansers, the Nightmare Pack, a giant Dragon and finally 2 Expansions. The pledge total changes on the last two days were just crazy and we seriously could not believe what happened. Not only could we see long time backers making generous pledges, but many new backers joining us at the last minute. We really hope we can keep this level of excitement by sending regular updates through Kickstarter and later via our own website. We will have so much to show you before the game is delivered to your door.

This has been a once in a lifetime experience for us. We will never start our first game again. Thank you for making this happen!

Well, very happy a spider warrior got into the box game, as I was hoping to paint one but didn't feel it was worth getting a whole set of them.

Also, the tone these guys have in their writing feels pretty genuine, and I'm feeling good about supporting a new first. Looking forward to this next fall (or the following spring, if KS patterns continue to hold true )

A shame that the spider expansion didn't get properly filled out. I thought it was a mistake to add $100k-odd of stretch goals with 15 hours to go, and equally a mistake/rather cynical to gimp an expansion pack for stretch goals the way they did. Given that it now compares quite badly to the first expansion and presumably wants to end up a proper retail product. I'm not bitching about freebies, I'm pointing out things like it lacking the number of tiles and such to make a complete product.

I suspect that the eventual outcome will be that the retail version may be fully "restored" while the KS version will come with what was unlocked. Either way, I don't see much benefit of adding it via the PM at this stage, though I'll add the other items that way.

Hmm... good point.

I think that, with limited time, it probably would have been best to prioritize filling out the tiles over minis, though I'm still personally happy with getting freebie minis in the core (since I wasn't intending on getting that expansion)

They said in the update that basically they're not sure how many tiles the final retail version will have, but want to do right by the backers. Having said that, they suggested if the retail version will have 3, doing this by making the extra tiles print and play, or making them available as add-ons in the pledge manager for a 'nominal' fee, neither of which is ideal.

I'm still trying to get everything in one package (not even sure if this one will reach retail in the UK), but agree that the second expansion does feel somewhat lacking - the lovely scenery tiles are a huge part of the game's appeal.

Nah, I went in for the base game (all I can afford atm) and will add the other items via Pledge Manager. I'll look into the spider expansion at retail, which will give them the opportunity to "fix" it, and me the opportunity to play the game and see how well I like it before dropping down another $50. I find the undead miniatures more to my liking than the Driders or Drachnids or whatever they are anyway.

Wait, sorry - I mean YES I ARE DROPPOING MY PLEDGE NAOW!

wierd that this thread went cold, given that Marrow has been doing updates as they try to finish bringing the game to market. Especially as J:WoD is nearly done and should be shipping within the next few months. Please don't lock the thread, thanks!

The thread is cold because relatively few of us went into this KS, and because despite the passable job they have been doing with updates (I wouldn't describe it as especially good) there really hasn't been anything of interest in, I dunno.. 6 months?

Of course, once we get the base box stuff in May or so, we're probably looking at another year or so to get the rest of it.

Of all the kickstarters I've backed, looking forward to this one the most. They haven't done anything to make me wish they'd die, and are smiling in all the photos of them.
That's the real secret to a good kickstarter, don't make your backers want you dead, and when dealing with the public, smile politely and wait for them to leave.

OK, sure. I get that Journey isn't a huge draw at Dakka, what with the Eastern themes and influences.

I think Journey has been doing an above average job on updates, showing real progress on getting the product together. Seeing the piles of production components as they are developed and produced gives me a good feeling, even though it is running late.

Hopefully, we receive Wave 1 in April/May, and Wave 2 by end of year. That would be great.

Joyboozer- I'd argue that the secret to a KS (other than having stuff as ready to go as possible to avoid delays) is to keep your audience enthused.

They're doing a pretty decent job keeping us informed here, but I kinda' lost interest in this one because they haven't been telling us anything exciting.

....Also, they put out that PDF of beta rules and I sent them a list of feedback since they requested it, got zero reply, not even an automated "thanks for your email." That's, uh, not going to make wish them dead, but it wasn't very polite, nor does it give me particular confidence in their system.

I've been on the fence about keeping this KS for some time now, and I'm leaning towards not, since I'm feeling more apathetic than involved.

At least you guys get updates.

I went and ended up preordering it through their store, and I basically need to periodically check on KS or here to see if anything is happening.

I actually forgot I ordered it around November or so.

I see Marrow just gave a shout out to the Conan game on Kickstarter. Pretty ambitious 100 minis for $100 type of campaign. I wonder how big it will go. $850k already, and 20+ days to go.

It's way out of scale for the 28mm figures that are the mainstay here. I'll happily admit that a main draw for me was a gakload of good looking Minotaurs (once stood next to a 28mm model. The game itself, I'm much more ambivalent on, since it's probably just going to be another boardgame, and not necessarily a great one that becomes a replay favourite.

I think they're going to be in scale with Kingdom Death, so there is that to look forward to.

My draw was that it was a Journey West theme with great minis.

54mm is nowhere close to compatible with 35mm. 35 looks like oversized 28-30, but 54 is ogre-sized compared to either.

Not backing this is something I really regret. The grunt minos aren't my cup of tea, at least the archers, and the single pose of them was a big negative for me, but everything else is awesome. If I had seen the size comparisons during the campaign I would've pledged for sure, because bigger is better. With actual monster sized minos compared to 28 mm stuff I'd have had less qualms about reposing and converting some of them seeing how they couldbe used in other games.

And my Spherewars Bullman would've felt right at home as a huge leader instead of being giant-sized in comparisom. Sigh.

I wouldn't overly regret it! They will of course be releasing at retail (and in a proper, non-KD kind of way) with the base box, expansions and some sort of smaller box sets for additional monster types. I imagine that with the retailer discount this will end up as only slightly more expensive than the Kickstarter, and you'll be able to spend money up front rather than wait a year and a half.

The only real "Kickstarter exclusives" you missed out on are some optional wings for the Dragon Princess, and the resins (some of which may eventually be for sale through their Hong Kong workshop).

With the Euro completly tanking, no, cratering compared to 2013, no SGs to "sample" the expansion minis and another Barrock and possibly international shipping without KS subsidies it's going to be A LOT more for way less I never see crazy deals on board games like some US stores have here in Germany. A 6 dollar (so, 4 2013€?) add-on back then (hug Panda warrior? YES, please) will probably be 10€ in a store here, IF someone carries it. 45€ expansions?

Meh, it's my own fault. I think I was wary because my first KS, Arena Rex, was supposed to ship during that time but was very late. THANKS, MIKH

I don't recall my cunning plans (it was awhile ago now) but it may have involved some nice thick armbands, and probably some wristbands. The odd broken horn, alternative horns and potentially some head swaps and even torso swaps between the various archers, bulls and bull centaurs. As well as the obvious, like weapons swaps from other ranges (Mantic Ogres, GW Orcs, etc) and armour/shields/etc swapped in/glued on/greenstuffed. They'll never look like fully individual figures, but they should be able to be mixed up a bit and look decent to good. After all, Mantic's Ogres only have 3 torsos and six heads (and not a lot of arm variations).

Yes, production delays did the usual thing, and they thought it made the most sense to ship in waves, which are going to be:

Wave 1 - base game, extras of any plastic models in the base game, Initiative markers, Plastic bridges, "All other resin scenery, doors, wells, etc".

Wave x - all of the non-scenery resin stuff (from pledges containing resin characters models). They are going to be sent directly from their workshop in Hong Kong, personally packed by Marrow. Don't know the timings, but they are independent of any Chinese factory production schedules.

Wave 2 - all of the remaining plastics & boardgame stuff, which is predominantly going to be the expansions and expansion-like content from the basic pledge.

We must have your correct address before Sunday May 3rd (Hong Kong time). You have been able to change your addresses in the pledge manager for some time now and we hope most (all!!!) of you have given us a correct address.

In other words, Marrow is printing shipping labels starting Monday, so it's happening!

Marrow Production wrote:This is the fun part: We finally have a production copy of Journey in the office!!! You cannot imagine how nervous we were to open the box. If we saw a problem, it would have been too late to fix. But it was beautiful, much better than we expected.

We have seen many samples, but this box had two important differences from anything we saw before. First, this is the first time we have seen many of the finished items. For example the cards: we saw samples printed with the correct ink and we saw white cards embossed and coated. This was the first time we have seen our finished cards. Second and more importantly, this is the first time we have received all the items together, packaged correctly. In the past, we were shipped an empty box or a manual in an envelope, or bags of minis, etc. To unpack the box and see all the parts in their glory was eye opening. Here are some details and photos.

Spoiler:

Simply glorious, and I'm super-excited to get my copy!

Did they ever mention the actual dimensions of the box.

It looks BIG from those videos.

Still irritated to this day I had to pull my pledge on this one.

Yet turned around and spent more money ordering from their online shop, after the first time they offered it up.

Which was still less than what I paid, and included some extra bonus figures, which it doesn't seem I will be getting in the end.

I still want that panda.

Jun 8 Update #125

Hello Backers!

Completing complex customs paperwork for each location has caused a significant delay. The core game is completely packaged but cannot leave China before this paperwork is complete. Trust us, we are just as frustrated as you.

We have worked hard on this and it is almost resolved. We are just waiting for final confirmations. Here is the current situation:

USA & Canada Hub: The container vessel leaves China on June 12 and arrive in the U.S around July 13.

EU Hub: We are awaiting final details and we will update the confirmed ship date soon.

Australia and New Zealand Hub: We are close to complete, but we do not have specifics yet. Once we have more solid information we will update you.

Rest of the world: Shipping will begin next week.

More info to follow – we still need to focus on the last part of this problem. We will post another shipping update with new estimates for delivery.

Thank you so much for all your patient and support with us!

Product on skids, US-bound hitting the water tomorrow! It's really happening!

Small update earlier this week (Jun 22):

Hello Backers!

We have some shipping news:

- The transport ship for the US distributor is well into its journey and should arrive at the mid of July.
- Shipping to EU is still on hold, due to paperwork issues.
- Shipping to Aus/NZ is still on hold, due to paperwork issues.
- Direct mail to other locations will start on Monday, June 22nd.

So the direct mail packages will probably be the first to arrive! We really hope these lucky backers enjoy their first game! The two shipments on hold should go soon. Everything is ready on our end: they are packed on pallets, address lists are ready, etc, etc. We are waiting for paperwork from the destination and then they can go. We are in constant contact with the parties doing the paperwork and we are trying to hurry this along as much as possible.

We are looking at how tracking numbers will be sent out and will update you when we have more info. We expect every package to be tracked, but the specifics will vary by region.

Now that Wave 1 is taking less of our time, we can share some information about what’s to come. We still need to finish Wave 1, so we’d like to start with something simple: here are pictures of the completed Yau Demon master sculpts.

I really like Ray’s work on this mini. It has great presence and power, and with all the detail, it should be fun to paint. It is a little different from the concept art, but I think all the changes are improvements.

If the US ship arrives mid-July, backers could start receiving base game late July through August. Cool!

Another update!

Marrow wrote:US Hub: I have contacted the distribution center and they say Journey is top of the list. They expect to have all the packages in the mail by the end of next week.

EU Hub: The container has cleared customs and the pallets have just arrived at the EU distributor. They will start shipping this week.

Aus/NZ: The shipment took the longest to clear customs, which is a little frustrating. However, it’s over and distributor will also be shipping packages later this week.

RoW: Shipping continues and is now 80% done.

10 more days for the US, so they're probably about halfway done.

Also, big congratulations for a special delivery for Hon:
last week my wife and I had our first baby! Mother and child are doing very well, although both the parents are very tired.

Since we are a two-man company this has had an impact on our productivity. All I can do is apologize.

Cool, who's the return address point back to? Given it's just the base game, I'm betting the fulfillment is being handled by a one man shop.

There's this weird thing that always seems to happen to me where 2 KS's arrive on the same day at my house. Rum and Bones is scheduled for delivery on Saturday, so if I were a betting man, I'd wager that my Journey will ship in the next day.

Thanks. That explains the time; a semi-professional shipping company, so they probably have a couple people in the back manually shipping time permitting.

I spent a summer in college working in a fulfillment warehouse for mail-order garbage and have a pretty good idea on how quickly a dedicated shipping line can bang out a single SKU. Mind-numbingly boring work.

I was the same until I got to speak to Hon and Ray at Adepticon. That alieviated many of my fears

I missed this as it was running at the same time as something else I really wanted

(I can't remember what so I don't know if I need to just regret missing this, or really, really regret missing this and putting my cash into a dud..... too scared it might be the latter to go look)

enjoy the game

I ended up having to back out as well, but I kept $1 in just in case; and then ended up getting the base game in the Pledge Manager later on.

Wish I got more.

Mars Attacks finished the week before and Shadows of Brimstone finished the day after.

Did you go for the "Lights Out" variants?!?

While I happily dodged some KS Bullets (Robotech and AvP immediately spring to mind), it has caused me to 'doubt' some projects, not back them, and then regret it.

This is one of those!

Now, now, don't go there. Bad place.

I've still got some Robotech left to deliver, but I'm glad I waited for AvP to go retail. Super glad I didn't back Imbrian Arts...

Journey has something of a boutique feel. It's very premium, even though it's still restic PVC minis. They're just so very nice. Everything is so lovely to touch and see, the occasional typo or other imperfection is that much more glaring. I'm really glad to have backed Journey.

I still want to get the panda. They haven't shown a sculpt for him yet, have they?

Is 'everything' now released/shipped to backers?

Or are there 'expansions' or 'add-ons' still to be delivered?

Only the core box has been delivered to backers, so expansions/resin minis/stretch goals above and beyond the core box are to be delivered still. I'm crossing my fingers hoping they'll re-open the pledge manager to allow adding in the expansions.

To date, Marrow has delivered the base game, only.

There are multiple expansions (White Bone Demons, Spider Demons, etc.) still to be produced, printed, packed & delivered.

Compared with KD:M, Marrow is a bit more business-like, pushing the base game into production first, then dealing with the expansions.

BTW, I'm also looking forward to the Panda, when that is done.

it wasn't either of those (although Shadows of Brimstone was another I wanted to back) so I looked

I'd blown far to much on Mierce's Darklands First Edition a couple of weeks earlier.... which is a relief as I'm very happy with what I've had from them, so I only have to regret missing this until it hits retail
