EDIT: There is a 7 year gap in this blog! On page 5 there is the update/continuation post after that gap! I have updated the paint scheme, see below! Hello to new users who will see this for the first time, and hello to anyone who may still be here from before and remembers this thread! Formerly Hive Fleet Isvärld, now renamed to Hive Fleet Niflheim!

Ok so this will be my project blog on my new/revamped tyranid army. I started collecting tyranids around 2004 when I was about 13 years old. At the time I knew nothing about correct painting and modelling, so just did my best! I stopped collecting/painting around 2006 due to life stuff.
However, I kept my tyranids and planned to get back into them at some point. (I should mention that I never learned to play 40k, due to not being able to afford the rule book, so instead me and my brother invented our own way of battling our small armies)

Anyway, I recently got my old tyranids back (we have moved a lot so they have been in various boxes around the country!) I will show a few photos of the old scheme I chose to paint them. Bear in mind that these are not well painted due to doing them when I was young and no experience or knowledge of the proper techniques, didn't even thin the GW paints! Right now I am stripping them using Fairy Power Spray, which I learned about here

Once I have them stripped I'll be able to start painting. I also bought a new trygon, first tyranid I've bought in all those years! Nicknamed him Spike on account of how it was quite a painful experience assembling him thus far!
I am planning on doing green stuff sculpts on most of my tyranids.

The idea is that this fleet is from a cold world, perhaps they specialise in attacking cold planets, and their colours are starting to change to work in these environments. The name, which took me a while to decide on, Is-värld, is the Swedish for Ice-World or Ice-realm. Wanted a Nordic language to describe their origin The bases will be painted with a slate and snow theme, I've seen a lot of decent bark pieces near where I walk the dog, so may try to pick up some of those and see how it will work, once I get to the basing stage that is.

Here are a few pictures to begin this journey with!

Your paint scheme ideas look really cool. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Always remember that the greatest painters out there all started out at the beginning. No one is perfect from the onset. The more you practice the better you will get. Keep at it!

Good luck!

Thank you! And I guess I do have the advantage of having painted before, as you can see from the pics, so not totally new to the whole thing. And I've been reading a lot of tutorials here and watching painting tips videos, so I definitely feel more prepared this time!

Oh so it will work as one word? I put "-" in because I was using them as two separate words but still wanted them linked for the name. If it works joined as one word I'll definitely update it

Planning on starting a Tyranid army in the next couple of weeks, definately gonna keep an eye on this thread.
Interesting color pallette too, looking forward to how that turns out.

On the off chance its of interest, Peregrine achieved some epic (IMO) snow effects on the bases here http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/526208.page
he explains how he did it a few posts into the first page.

Thanks for the link! I was going to use a tutorial I found here, I think it was in the article section on how to make snow bases, but I can't find it now which is really annoying.

Thanks for the link, it was a great tutorial!

Ok a small update: I put in a few gaunts to be stripped with Fairy Power Spray, to see how it went. Left them for 24 hours after trying to scrub one that was in for only an hour, just to check if there was anything happening. Which there was just not much. So I have 4 clean ish ones that I scrubbed with a toothbrush today. Will show a picture below. The hardest part was getting the old graveyard earth paint off of the bases! They are about as clean as I can get them really, and I think that once they are base coated, they will be fine. Will obviously need to clean up the models themselves as back when I assembled them I didn't know about removing mold lines and extra bits of plastic!
Also, I'll show the paints that were suggested to me by a GW employee for my paint scheme. I bought the teclis blue later for use in the carapace pattern. Thinking I should be able to use the other colours to blend for everything else I might need. Will probably need a white paint though. Was thinking about using one of my spare cheap acrylic paints, but thinking it might not be a good idea now.
I've ordered some magnets for Spike, should be here soon, and I'll also work on some green stuff sculpting on him in the next few days.

So a new update. I am waiting on a couple of adapters for my compressor before I can start airbrushing. In the mean time I have cleaned up a few more old gaunts. Managed to lose a head down the sink, so that's a warning to everyone who might try cleaning their miniatures at the sink!
Also, I bought a small set of termagaunts, 5 in total in the box, they are the clip together kind. I will be using these as the test subjects for the paint scheme! I figured that since I'm starting out painting properly, and it being a test, I might as well start on decent models rather than 8 year old, recently stripped ones, to give myself a better chance The set of 5 was only about £6, so was a pretty good buy.

However, as you're about to see, while I was assembling them today, I noticed that one had some kind of mold error. On his left arm, he kind of had a wing attaching to his chest, a big chunk of plastic basically, and it looked very silly! So... I decided to solve the problem by carving out the plastic as best as I could. Actually turned out ok as you'll see below.

The top 4 images show the problem, compared to a normal gaunt and from different angles. You can see where I marked in lines where the arm SHOULD be. (it looked a lot worse before I drew in those lines!) The bottom 4 images show the problem solved. Still needs a little bit of work to smooth it out, but from a normal standing view, he now looks like the others!

Lost the plug for the kitchen sink sadly xD But yeah I'll be more careful next time. The annoying part was that it didn't even bounce, didn't even hit the sides of the plug or anything, just went straight down xD

Okay, had to get that out of my system. Welcome back to the hobby! Unfortunately I must inform you that there are no girls on the internet, and by default you are now assumed to be a 40 year old man named Earl with severe psoriasis. It's just standard internet procedure

Trygon looks good so far, and I can see in your earlier scheme the potential for a very nice army if you'd had more years' worth of experience in painting or just life in general. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

I think the colour scheme will work out pretty well in a group, just picturing the sharp blue pattern on all the carapaces, should stand out quite nicely Not sure how many models yet, I'm not planning on playing competitively, if I do learn that is.

And now for the update. Spike is pretty much done. I worked on magnetising his top set of arms, the large ones, and made a couple of mistakes. Decided therefore that I won't magnetise his smaller arms, as this was more of a learning thing. Will save the other magnets for other big models that will need them, such as the flyrant I hope to get eventually But yes, with his large arms removable, it will be easier than painting around them lol.
I may do some more green stuff additions to him, I find that the head spikes are rather repetative, so think I'll add in some variation to those, and thinking of doing something with his tail as well. But yes, here's some pics of Spike fully assembled!

Do you have the new Nid codex in hand yet? If not, I advise you to refrain from painting on the Trygon until you've had a chance to really sink your teeth into the new book. There have been plenty of times when I started building and painting a model only to have to pop the arms/head/tail/whatever off when I realized that my chosen wargear was no longer what I wanted. For example, I've read conflicting rumors about scything talons becoming rather pointless, so Spike might have a slight problem there.

Your quotes are a bit mixed up, but no I don't have the new codex. I have the previous one though, hoping that the Trygon isn't changing too much. Although, I don't think trygons have any other options other than scythes, so he's stuck that way anyway XD

Its definitely not inside the quote marks, I'm replying to you normally as well, lets see if it does it here too.

EDIT: Seems to work now, perhaps its a problem when there's several quotes going on, oh well, nevermind.

And yep I'll be painting them soon, I am waiting for some adapters for my airbrush to arrive

~ Hive Fleet Niflheim ~ Ice World Tyranids with Bioluminescence! @ 2014/01/10 18:32:19

Post by: Glaiceana

So I tested out my airbrush today, and well, it was a disaster. Tried thinning the paint, tried making it thicker, but no matter what it all just came out as spatters. It made reasonably thin lines, its just that it was making lines of dots, and not a fine spray. Its a single action siphon brush btw. Cleaned the brush etc but no difference. I guess that's what I get for buying a cheap airbrush xD So I'm trying to decide what to do now. Either get a new brush that's a bit better quality, or give up on airbrushing my models all together. I'd rather not give up on that because I'm planning to do a lot of shading/highlighting, and still really would prefer my base coat to be sprayed on. Decisions decisions...

~ Hive Fleet Niflheim ~ Ice World Tyranids with Bioluminescence! @ 2014/01/11 03:16:44

Post by: Ifurita

What are you thinning with? I picked up some Liquitex Airbrush Medium which seems to work nicely.

~ Hive Fleet Niflheim ~ Ice World Tyranids with Bioluminescence! @ 2014/01/11 11:07:11

Post by: Glaiceana

I was thinning it with water, and I checked up on that and people seem to think it's ok. I think the reason is that the airbrush cost about £7, and is small and plastic.

~ Hive Fleet Niflheim ~ Ice World Tyranids with Bioluminescence! @ 2014/01/11 11:39:45

Post by: Rabid Ferret

Water is ok to thin. I have found more success with windex or even better airbrush thinner such as liquitex. Wear a mask if you use windex. Amonia is not good to inhale. It dries very fast though and does not run like water will.

Your airbrush is part of the problem. If it only cost you 7 pounds you are in luck. I recommend Iwata or Badger for airbrushes. Also go for a double action gravity feed brush. You will thank me later.

Iwata has three airbrushes that are really good for miniature painting. Even the cheapest one is awesome for this.
http://www.iwata-medea.com/products/iwata-airbrushes/eclipse/hp-cs/
http://www.iwata-medea.com/products/iwata-airbrushes/revolution/cr/
http://www.iwata-medea.com/products-type/neo-cn/

I use an Iwata Revolution CR

Spraying on base coats is amazing. Once I began to do this was when I got really productive with painting. Before this i would suffer from severe burnout/boredom because I fething hate base coating.

Also, you do NOT need an expensive airbrush compressor. What are you using BTW for your compressor? Knowing that will help too.

You jumped into the deep end of the pool but don't worry, we can help you swim like a pro if you don't give up!

~ Hive Fleet Niflheim ~ Ice World Tyranids with Bioluminescence! @ 2014/01/11 13:53:35

Post by: Glaiceana

Thanks for the help! And yeah I heard a lot about badger and Iwata. But I'm just not sure I should go all out and get one of those just yet. However, I have seen good reviews and actual videos of this Veda 130 brush. Its double action and gravity fed as well, so I think that's my best shot.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331033422200?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Oh and the compressor I'm using is this one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Airbrush-Compressor-1-8HP-Air-Brush-Hose-10-Stencils-Spray-Art-Kit-Portable-/201005755838?pt=UK_Crafts_DrawingSupplies_EH&hash=item2ecce06dbe
And yes I know its cheap but its all I can afford when I'm starting out at this point really.

Trygon looks good. I'm really excited to see what kind of mods you make to him with GS, as I think leaving your nids as stock makes your army look kinda generic (no offence to people who don't mod them. They can still look awesome).
Do you have any idea what you're gonna do to his head and tail yet?

And rats about the airbrush. I have a big fat 0 knowledge on that, so I'm afraid theres no reinforcements coming from this sector.

Keep up the good work.

Post by: Glaiceana

Thanks! Well I'm going to be making his head spikes a little better, most likely will extend his tongue, as its so small it might as well not be there at this point, the tail will have the most work. I think I'll make the bone segments at the end wider, perhaps spiked on the top edge as well so it looks more like it could be used as a weapon.

I agree that the tongue could be longer. Actually, it would look kind of cool like a big floppy dog's tongue, all lolled out to one side. It would be like a tyranid doing a wazzaaaaaaap

Its not the keeping the model stock thats the prkblem. Nids have the best models in gw fullstop. Due to the poseability no 2 armies will ever look the same.

The problem is the bases. Since everything but a gaunt is om a terminatot base bigger. The bases are what need the work bug time

If you just want the airbrush to put down a quick colored basecoat, why not use colored spraypaint?

http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2013/05/brent-cheats-at-painting-pictorial.html

You can buy cheap sraypaint which will do the job just fine, with no fiddly airbrush nonsense. Super easy!

Ah you are quite likely right. I'm new to the hobby so I don't know precisely what the cause is, only that a good portion of the table-top quality paintjobs/armies look 'samey' to me. It always strikes me as a tragedy since there are so many examples of armies that look absolutely gorgeous due to the painter putting in a little thought to give them a unique flavor through color choice or GS additions.

Thanks guys! Deciding on what green stuff additions I could add to other models, particularly the gants I'm going to be painting soon. I figured though that a lot of people would say its not worth modifying that many small units, but since I'm not planning on making a super competitive army, I think it will be ok

Trygon looks great. I really like the tail modifications in particular.

If I may offer an idea or theme for inspiration on your gaunt GSing; IMO the GS on the trygon calls to mind both scorpions (the stinger) and centipedes (the little spikes on either side of the carapace segments look kinda like legs) and that could be a cool aesthetic to carry through the rest of your models.

Maybe side spikes on the larger bits of carapace on the gaunts backs, or a bulbous growth close to the end of the tail showing where the stinger has already begun to develop.

Kudos on your work so far. I'm chomping at the bit lol, my models can't arrive soon enough. I've already got a few ideas for some hercules-beetle-esque modifications to the larger guys in my army xD

Keep up the good work boss.

Nice greenstuff work. Really brought some character to that model. Improving the rattlesnake tail by adding the stinger was a good choice, and executed brilliantly. First time using greenstuff aswell... if only we all had that ability!

Made me laugh, have an exalt for that one xD As for tut pics, I'm not really sure how I'd manage that, as I didn't really have a process for making the pieces, kind of just grabbed a bit of GS, shaped it up with my fingers, then struggled to get it to stay in the right place on the model xD

Well I've only added spikes on the head, don't see why you can't have spikes going all the way down your nids backs

Haha thanks!

Well another update. Think I'm pretty much ready to get painting now. Heard about not priming in high humidity, and apparently its 81% here, which does sound kind of high, so I think I'll wait to prime all the models tomorrow. I've also done the basing on them, using cork and some small rocks. Will prime all that black as well.
I wanted to have a rock for my trygon to curl around, and I found the perfect one today in the garden, its kind of got an overhand too, so I could put icicles hanging off it, which should look pretty cool.
Here come the pics!

Primed the models! Seemed to work fine. The first gant I sprayed got a bit too thick of a layer of spray on it, so he lost a bit of detail, but the others were fine since I got the technique right after that. I did the Trygon last of course
I ordered Temple Guard Blue paint which I'll need for the tongues and the exposed muscle type spots for the nids. Will start airbrushing the base coat, highlights etc tomorrow

Ok, so I've been busy painting! I'll outline the steps I took under each image. First though, I'm having a slight problem in deciding between two designs. I decided to get some Sand Texture Gell, which you mix with the acrylic paints, and it will give a nice grainy texture to the surface, I planned to do this on the carapace of the tyranids. However, I'm not sure about its effect now. It could be due to the fact that its on such small units, it may look better on a the larger ones. But it also gives a shiny effect to the carapace. I continued to paint 2 of the Gants, one with this texture, one without, so I could compare the end results. Looking at them now, I think I'm leaning back towards keeping the texture, but what do you guys think? I also decided to add some extra things to the design. Also, the two Gants are not quite finished yet, I need to tidy up some of the shade, and also do the eyes and re-highlight the vent areas. Oh and yes I'll be doing the carapace pattern next as well! Will need to blend on to the model, so it will be quite difficult, but I'll manage

I think the textured armor looks better with the highlights then the smooth one. It gives it an almost icy feel, or something similar to beetles carapace. very nice

Thanks, I agree it would look nicer on the larger models, but had to test it on the Gants first, didn't want to ruin the Trygon yet xD

Ok the two Gants are pretty much done now. I forgot to paint the eye on the weapons, will do that next. Will start basing these now, will dry brush the ground for details, then will be adding snow, mixed with water effects, plus some grass.
Really do need to figure out how to take better photos of miniatures though, they look a lot better in real life than in these photos, but it will have to do for now

The texture is done by using Winsor & Newton Galleria Acrylic Mediums: Sand Texture Gel. You just mix it with your paints, in my case the black I used for the carapace, and it puts these grains in it for the effect

:bounce:

Thanks for the link! I was going to use a tutorial I found here, I think it was in the article section on how to make snow bases, but I can't find it now which is really annoying.

Since I was mentioned, http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=page&id=6 might be the tutorial you're thinking of (it's the one I used, specifically the "water effects mix" method). For materials you want Woodland Scenics "soft flake snow" and "realistic water", most gaming products are just Woodland Scenics stuff re-labeled and increased in price.

Oh, and one last tip: I'd suggest waiting to glue your models down until you have the wet snow mix on the base. You want it to be crushed down and pushed aside realistically, what I do is put a blob of snow down and use the actual model to make footprints to stand in, and then immediately glue it in place so the snow mix dries around the model.

I like the color scheme, the spots on the limbs and carapace really give the gaunts an animal feel. Also your green stuff work is pretty awesome for your first time out. I'm terrible with green stuff and generally shy away from it as much as possible.

I do kinda feel like the color scheme is a little flat and wonder if just adding red, yellow, or orange eyes might make the whole thing pop. Just my 2 cents.

Ok, I've done the two bases now. Had a slight problem with the GW snow clumping together in the water effects liquid.
Figured out how to fix that now, I just need to add more liquid, less snow lol. Also finished the detail on the weapons. Actually managed to get the see-through jewel type effect on the eye I think!
Also, I've assembled 12 new Gaunts, they are ready for painting. I used some greenstuff under their bases so they were a bit more balanced. I see people with gaunts falling over all the time lol. Its partly due to mixing the wrong body types with the wrong scythe arms. There's the body where it is jumping further forwards a lot more, you can tell by the leg it stands on, its a lot more stretched out. Therefore, with those ones, do not put the far reaching scythe arms on to it! You'll mess the balance up even more. Save the stretched out arms for the body types that are have the leg more crouched!

Luckily mine weren't that unbalanced to begin with, so just a bit of greenstuff was enough.

Ok so I have a question. Wondering about introducing a different colour to the scheme. I'm thinking something for the hooves and claws/scythes. Just something to make them pop a bit more.
What do you guys think to a shading of purple on the hooves and scythes? It would be a brighter shade towards the edges, and then fading back to black closer to the body.
Red seems like it wouldn't fit my theme, same for yellow and green.

How about the pale blue close to the body fading to pure white towards the edges ? Or yellow to white ? Or even pure gloss black like glass or obsidian ?

Personally I think anything brighter in purple or red would be too bright for my subdued tastes !

Ok so time for a little update! I took my two painted gaunts into the local GW to get some advice on them, it was suggested to try Drakenhof Nightshade instead of Nuln Oil shade, was allowed to test it on a spare model, and also Gulliman Blue Glaze was suggested, I liked the look of both of these results and will be using them for the rest of my tyranids! Basically they just enhance the blue colours a little more.

Also, the guy at the GW said that if I can get a full set of two types of troops and my flying Hive Tyrant finished, then I'd be able to come in and start learning how to play! Which would be pretty cool

Back to painting, I had to clean my airbrush out thoroughly because the paint stopped coming through for some reason. But I got all my Hormagaunts and Spike base coated and highlighted! See images below! Just started on their carapaces. Once those are finished, its on to the shading and the carapace pattern!

Even though these don't have the blue elements on them they look awesome. Have you dropped that element or are you planning to keep it a bit more sporadic? Like it's some kind of bio-luminous element that they can turn on and off at will.

No no I am still working on these, this is just an update progress shot lol. I have 5 more of them to paint with the shade, Spike the Trygon as well, and then I'll be fixing up some of the highlights on the ones that need it, then adding the blue patterns on the carapaces, and then the eyes/teeth/spot details!
Also need just 5 more termagants to have them count as a unit, once I have those, I'll paint them along with my Flyrant, from there its learning to play and deciding what other models to get from there! Carnifex and venomthrope seem most likely

I don't have the new nid codex but I think TL devourers are a popular choice. I'd post over in tactics(? at least I think that's the right section) or perhaps 40k General discussion and you might get some good advice.

Then again if you think the Venom Cannon looks cool (which it does) go for it. Rule of cool should always prevail!

If you want to get a drool effect, try UHU glue- I've been experimenting (with mixed results I have to add) with gore effects which will ultimately festoon my DE Executioners.

It's fun and messy to boot.

Funny you should say that, I have actually ordered a cheap turn table just for this purpose Codex seems ok, but if you mean impressions regarding the tactics or stats etc, I haven't learned to play yet so it makes little difference to me at this point xD

Sounds good. Looking forward to the videos when they arrive.

I would say any impression is worth it. Fluff, units, weapons, art etc. For example I've always been a huge fan of The Red Terror, because of the fluff and the model. It makes me think about converting a mawloc into its classic shape. Any inspiration gained for Hive Fleet Isvarld, new potential units?

Think you guys are going to love how Spike it looking right now! And he's not even finished yet.
@Medium of Death, been reading through the codex, definitely going to get a venomthrope, never been a fan of genestealers, so probably won't get those. I like the coloured art pictures in the book, even though a few people didnt like them because they were just coloured versions of old pictures.
@Elnibbus, used a different method in the end

Nice work on the drool. I wonder if varnish would seal it and harden it a bit more in order to stop it breaking.

Hey guys, sorry for the big gap in posts here. I have been working on my art and applying for jobs, so haven't been painting my nids for a while.

Also I think I might have been putting off painting them for some reason, despite the fact that the next stage will be the most rewarding, (adding patterns and finishing off most of the models so far) Will try to start work on them today or tomorrow!

Will also do some turntable videos, I have a turntable thing, but it is manual, so I'll try to move it round as smoothly as I can xD

In the mean time, here is a digital painting I did a couple weeks ago that you might be interested in, ( I did post it in a separate topic here on Dakka, but just incase some of you here didnt see it)

Oh, those do look good!

Reminds me of the first army I ever put together for 40K. I did Tyranids from an Ice world as well! Bright blue skin and shiny black carapaces. I had... no clue what I was doing at the time. But I got an army painted up and was a proud chap. I'll have to dig em' up.

Ohgodtheylookawful. Shame and wonder. Its like all I knew how to do was drybrush.

Anyway.

Your little spots you add to their 'soft' skin is a great little touch. Doing it on a mess of gaunts is a lot of work and really a labor of love.

What really impresses me is what you are doing with the carapace bits. The textured coating, along with the brilliant blue/white stripes look great, and I'm sure it is going to look excellent on the big bugs. Also drool. Drool makes em' look like they're gonna bite you every time you reach down to move the model.

Killer work.

Thanks guys! Will be painting up a few gaunts, and if the blending goes well on the scythes, I'll also paint the the trygon's scythes in the same way.

I realised the other day that I might actually run out of GW snow on my trygon's base, which would be rather annoying.

So I've started painting the scythes with the new blending idea. Think its going well so far! Will obviously get better at blending as I do more of these. Done 2 gaunts so far. And since I've not done wet blending on the models before really, other than a few hooves on some of the 2 of the gaunts a while ago, its not too bad an attempt I think.

I also decided to add some ardcoat to the previously completed gaunts, on the carapace, and it looks good. Going to do that for all the carapaces now.

7 years... I have returned again, after a seven year gap! Long story short, I moved, got a job, got engaged, lots of life stuff basically! But never forgot my Tyranids, was hoping to come back to them!
So last week I managed to acquire them. Unfortunately, due to family not really knowing what they were, they were stored in a box, kind of haphazardly thrown in there, up in the attic.
I salvaged everything I could, and took them all home. Below you can see how they are:

As you can see, they are a little dusty, and Spike has sustained some damage... he has lost his green stuff'd spikes on his head, and yet his "drool" has managed to somehow stay present, although slightly bent now! I should be able to repair this however and make some new, perhaps better spikes! The dust is a big issue though, as it seems to have fused to the carapaces, they should be shiny... I have already brushed over all the models to get as much dust off as possible. I am thinking I could go over with a damp paintbrush and carefully see if I can restore the black glossiness.

Below is what I currently have in terms of models to build:

Still have some Termagants to build, my Hive Tyrant, and some new Warriors that I bought from an awesome local store.

Tools I have:

Still have the airbrush too!

And last but certainly not least... I have updated my paint scheme! Now it includes the changes I made over the entirety of this thread, and I have simplified the process as well.

This does mean I will have to go over the already painted models with some washes of white in order to lighten the skin. I was also thinking of painting a nice thin white line along the edges of the scythes to help them stand out. I have decided that the glowing blue pattern will look better leading up to the outer edge/apex of the carapaces, rather than just stuck in the middle and ending before the edge.
The snow on the finished stands has gone a little yellow and flat looking, also need to figure out how to fix that.

If anyone who followed along and commented on this thread previously is still here, I will be happily surprised! But hello to all the new users who will see this for the first time!

Thank you @Crispy78!
Ok so I have managed to clean the models, using water and a paint brush did actually work out fine, like I hoped it would! They look much better now.
I have ordered a wet palette, looking forward to using that. I have decided that I probably won't be using my airbrush going forward, as its one of the things that stopped me painting before, due to the setup and learning curve and trial by error I have to do each time I use it. Therefore I will be using layering and dry brushing techniques. I know that I will have more fun spending time on each model, making them look good!

Another thing that stopped me was worrying about what weapons and accessories I should give each model. I have now decided to go with the rule of cool, and not to worry about min maxing and what the meta is, as I will not be playing competitively, and I still have yet to learn the game anyway. If I do, it will just be for fun.

So my next steps will be:
  • Repairing Spike. Fixing his green stuff areas, redoing his drool, gluing back on some of his spikes.

  • Repainting the skin areas of all my nids with washes of Fenrisian Grey, and layering on white for the highlights.

  • Using Drakenhof Nightshade much more sparingly this time. Only in the deep recesses of the models.

  • Unknown where I will use the Guilliman blue glaze at the moment, maybe over the skin if I feel it needs more blue, but I may do it as a wash over the carapace to give it a nice beetle like sheen.

  • Paint up the bioluminescent areas of the carapace and spots on the skin for all models, detailing, wet blending the scythes, etc.

  • Build the last 4 gants, attach the Hive Tyrant's tail to the base, probably will drill it, magnetise his wings, glue the rest together. Build the new Warriors.

  • Snow and ice effects on the bases.

  • As for future models, I think I would love to get a Gargoyle brood, a Carnifex, Hive Guard, Zoanthrope.

Always warms my heart to see an old army get pulled out of it's hibernation. Will be cool to see it grow.

Abaut the old dust, have you considered using a can of compressed air, used to clean electrical equipment? If it's held close to the model, it might be powerful enough to blow the dust off?

Welcome back to the hobby! I like your thinking, the rule of cool trumps! I've had a similar experience - in my early teens I was concerned about modeling and painting "the right way", aka trying to copy the studio models. When I came back to the hobby a few years ago, I decided that I'd go by the rule of cool and paint individual models and squads first. Armies are not a priority as I'm not too interested in the gaming.

I really like you color scheme, those biolumenescence spots are a great detail! Looking forward to see your collection evolve.

Thanks Zywus! I did consider that yes, but I figured if physically brushing it wasn't enough, then that might not have made much difference. The water definitely helped though.

    Thank you mcmattila!

A little update on my progress! My partner helped screw down my Hive Tyrant into the base. I chose to have it done this way as its a piece of bark that I used, I was concerned that if it was just super glued to the surface it would just tear off the top layer. I can easily cover the head of the screw with snow and tufts etc.

Can't even see the screw from the front angle, which is good.

Speaking of snow, I have some ak snow sprinkles on the way, as this has the best sparkly wet realistic snow I have seen. Also ordered some glass chips to help with ice effects. Will also try making some icicles by using some old spare see through bases.
Also, I repaired some of the damage to Spike. Fixed one of his missing prong things on his back, and a missing spike on his tail:

Next up will be rebuilding his green stuff spikes on his head, and also making the drool more obvious and strong by going over with even more pva glue lol.

Originally I was going to put spikes all up the bone segments on the end of his tail, I only got as far as doing 4 previously, trying to decide if I should continue with that or not.
I also need to decide if I will go for a glowing effect on my nids' eyes. Might test it out when I start painting again.

    Post by: Glaiceana

I have done the green stuff work on Spike! He now has his spikes back haha. I also finished off the tail, not sure if it was worth the effort! Repaired a few tiny spikes too, again, not sure its worth it as its such small details, it may not be noticeable once repainted.

I also made the last 4 Termagants! I decided to bend their tails to give them more dynamic movement. Really happy with how it looks, but it's annoying I didn't think to do this with all my previously made ones!

Also started on my Warriors. Once everything is built and greenstuffed, bases too, I will be priming them all in black together.

~ Hive Fleet Niflheim ~ Ice World Tyranids with Bioluminescence! @ 2021/10/06 10:59:15

    Post by: Nevelon

Bending the tails seems so obvious, yet I’m not sure I’ve seen it done before. Wish I had thought of it 3 dozen gaunts ago.

    Nice repair work.

On WYSWYG, I don’t care a whole lot for my nids, but did put magnets on my Flyrant’s weapon arms. How many non-bug players know the difference between scything talons or rending claws anyway? Or the assorted cannons? I’ll do some magnets to swap between shooty or stabby loadouts, so opponents have some idea of how it will kill them. But things like my Trygon I just glued on the bits I thought looked best. If I field it as a mawlock/prime/normal; it’s a burrowing bug, I’ll go over the details at the start of the mission with my opponenet. And what it has on its tail is not going to shift the battle.

~ Hive Fleet Niflheim ~ Ice World Tyranids with Bioluminescence! @ 2021/10/16 11:10:24

    Post by: Glaiceana

Thank you @Nevelon! Yes I agree, its not so big a deal with nids, and if I ever learn to play, I will do the same and make it clear what setup each has if its not obvious

Did a much better job with the green stuff this time, giving proper horns to my 4 new gants.

Built the new warriors too! Tried to give them somewhat interesting poses:

This guy is my favourite I think!

I also found a replacement rock for Spike's base, he was going to have a rock with an overhang to wrap around, and I could then place some icicles hanging from it. So done that, and put rocks and cork on all the new bases too. Everything is primed black too now, ready to get onto painting!

    Post by: Glaiceana

I finished painting a Termagant with the new and improved scheme, and I am super proud of it! Its definitely the best mini I have painted so far. The process I used was; base coat of Fenrisian Grey on all skin (2 layers), Temple Guard Blue on the gun and tongue (2 layers), wash of Drakenhof Nightshade, then layers of whiter Fenrisian on all the highlight areas. The spots are Teclis blue and a dot of white scar, hooves are 2 layers of Teclis blue and then white blended on top, same for claws and carapace pattern. Then the sand texture gel mixed with Abaddon Black for the carapace, around the glowing pattern, avoiding it. Then highlighting the carapace edges with thin lines of Fenrisian first and then white.
It's not quite finished yet, need to do gloss on the carapace and around the mouth, and the base of course, but really happy with how this turned out so far!

Thank you Nevelon! Well I don't actually plan on having 90 haha, more like the set amount for each type of the ones I like, so that would be 10 of these guys. But honestly, I don't mind putting in the time to make them look good, that is the whole fun for me

I finished that gant now, put ardcoat on the carapace and around the mouth for drool, and a coat of Stormshield to protect the rest of the model. The snow was achieved with a mix of AK Snow Sprinkles, Citadel Snow that came in the Northern Wastes basing kit, and pva glue. Love how it glitters! I also bought some clear blue glass chippings, in order to place on the bases to give the effect of chunks of ice!

Next, I am working on finishing the rest of the Gants, they have the skin base coat on so far. Will do one of the Warriors too, or maybe I will get the base coat done on everything at once, including the flyrant, we will see! I also have a plan for making my own ripper swarms too!
