Decided to add the main single chunk to the top post:

======================================================================================================
Consolidating my KD stuff... hit my stride a few posts down with my second Twilight Knight.

Super-excited about KD, with some thoughts on the matter as usual.

So, the first of many:

I'm not a huge fan of some of the rather scantily-clad sculpts that KD has put out, but I have to say that those monsters and your most recent batch of painted humans look phenomenal. As others have noted, your ability to create atmosphere is astounding. Do you have a tutorial on how to paint flesh in that kind of lighting yet? I'd really appreciate it if you would make one.

Excellent depiction of shadow and light on those latest minis.

Very nice indeed.

Post by: spiralingcadaver

Thanks, all!

youidiotkid, yeah, I'm starting to feel like the regular models are a hit way more than the first few scantily clad ladies I painted.

I'm still experimenting with this new way of coloring, so don't have anything like a tutorial together, but I'll definitely try to down the line.

The very basic version is, like everything I paint, I start with the midtone (skin color) then blend the middle to the shadow, then the middle to the highlight. the shadow is blue-grey, and the highlight is orange, with yellow and white extremes.

Heyas SC!

Really love the work you've done on these minis. Really love the lighting. Very grim. I really need to get off my butt and get some paint on my own minis. I particularly like the cloak on that savior. It almost glows!

So I while I was reading your report, I had a question about one particular bit:
"NOTE: we realized nemesis years are for the next year, not the current one, so it should have actually appeared year 5."

My campaign is currently on the butcher and we're encountering it on Year 4 (so the 5th fight including the tutorial Lion).
I cant seem to find any indication that you encounter Nemeses in the year following the note on the Settlement Sheet.
Where's this noted?

Lion Knight, Butcher, survivors- (SC's Kingdom Death Blog) @ 2015/10/04 16:03:52

Post by: spiralingcadaver

Hi, sorry, realized a decent amount of my document was weird: We'd started thinking of settlement as the end of each year, rather than the beginning of it (probably because the first year has no hunt), so a lot of our notation was off.

The end of the fourth year (the fifth fight) is correct. We fought ours between the third and fourth years (our fourth fight), which we mistakenly noted down as our fourth year. I'll need to correct that.

Edit: corrected the blog. I think everything's right now. Realized that it was a combination of aforementioned hunt thing and that you check off a year when you get to it, not when you complete it.

Lion Knight, Butcher, survivors- (SC's Kingdom Death Blog) @ 2015/10/04 17:50:33

Post by: Ramos Asura

Ahaaaaaa Gotcha!!

Wow, that'd be considerably more of a challenge... We've been having some troubles just fighting him on schedule! Really gotta rethink our tactics. His bleed counters can be brutal.

Ok then! Thanks!

Lion Knight, Butcher, survivors- (SC's Kingdom Death Blog) @ 2015/10/04 18:46:15

Post by: spiralingcadaver

Yeah... we barely got out of that one.

We're in the middle of a King's Man fight, and man is that guy terrifying. Right now, it seems like the people are tougher than the animals.

Also, we're getting bandages before we consider going up against a level 2 butcher... hope it doesn't have anything awful like more bleeding tokens.

Lion Knight, Butcher, survivors- (SC's Kingdom Death Blog) @ 2015/10/04 20:12:40

Post by: Ramos Asura

IIrc, one of the big things on Butcher2 is that he gets 3 cards a turn rather than 2. Plus a couplea counters on him....

Definitely agree with you on the Nemesis monsters being way tougher than the monsters...

Bandages and monster grease proved invaluable when I ran through Butcher just now... Just so happened to get the tall grass terrain, too, so was playing hard to hit.... REALLY lucked out!

Lion Knight, Butcher, survivors- (SC's Kingdom Death Blog) @ 2015/10/04 20:46:55

Post by: spiralingcadaver

Ouch, that's rough on level 2...

And yeah, grass is everyone's best friend. It's fantastic when you draw two pairs. We'd prioritized monster grease last time, but this run we've been drawing really poorly on organs...

Fantastic work, I'm loving everything you are doing, both the monsters and adventurers AND the scantly clad women! I'm so impressed with the quality of the skin looks when there's so much of it to paint! The Holiday White Speaker for example, did you paint it like an usual skin tone and then you used glazing to make it look yellowish or did you start layering that skin tone from the very start?

Wow man. That is the first Gorm I have seen that I actually liked. Moving the left hand a bit there really made a huge difference, as well as the emphasis on the light lure on his head. Goddamn... I am totally trying that when I get mine!

The big collection is also massively impressive! Too much to take in this quickly, it deserves closer study.

Lion Knight, Butcher, survivors- (SC's Kingdom Death Blog) @ 2017/09/11 22:53:59

Post by: spiralingcadaver

Thanks! Yeah, I only got the Gorm because of its mechanics, I thought the model was possibly the worst of the first KS. But, I felt painting it was pretty nice, since it's got a lot of large, flat surfaces.

I've considered actually revising it a little more and giving it some kind or war paint on its sides to break up some of the space (the fluff implies they're capable of basic crafting), but I think that the texture might be enough...

Not enough superlatives in vocabulary... you are definitely the best painter on dakka in my book. There are people who do better blends, super intricate freehand or skillful airbrushing... but none who handle light & shadow like you do!

Stunning work!

Thanks! I guess what I like really shows: I love playing with color and composition, but find getting perfectly smooth models loses a bit of its character and usually isn't worth the effort. I do actually like the result detail work, my own and others', but I tend to get bored during the execution

aku, yeah, I feel like a lot of the KD models don't really capture the dynamism of their rules. I've already done a lot of cutting on my Manhunter and Spidicules...

Nice job on the Spidicules!
Mine remains half assembled until I can figure out where to store him.

And I am absolutely in love with those super colourful Silk Survivors (it's my favourite armour kit).

I'll definitely be giving that custom Gorm fight a whirl too.

Thanks! Yeah, the spidicules armor is one of my favorite styles; too bad it isn't the best in-game.

I hope you enjoy the scenario! Nothing revolutionary, but I think it's pretty fun.

Wow. Just found this blog and it is some of the best art I have seen on Dakka. Your style really plays into the themes of light and darkness that seem to be all over KD:M and bring out the best in these miniatures. Fantastic.

Lion Knight, Butcher, survivors- (SC's Kingdom Death Blog) @ 2019/01/04 20:28:51

Post by: spiralingcadaver

aku/Inevitable, thanks, I find them pretty nicely mellow, too- I've tried similar effects to exaggerate OSL or as the base for sharper highlights, but rarely as subdued as these.

Da Boss, yeah, I'd been playing with similar effects on Malifaux models since there's so often a horror element to the setting, but KD felt nearly custom-designed for my painting styles since light and dark are such a heavy part of the setting and often each model. Thanks!

Very cool work here - your OSL technique is always so effective, and the various colors on your newer models is really something else (especially the Dung Beetle Knight and Weirdo Face-Ball IMO).

Thanks! Yeah, I've really enjoyed playing with pinks. (I think the only color like that that I'm still messing with is purple, which doesn't turn out quite where I want it... maybe I'll try more of a dark/blacklight to it next time?)

aku-chan, yeah, I agree: Link is a pretty heavy conversion from a few multipose kits so I both had more flexibility and confidence modifying him than Zelda, who's only lightly modified from a monopose and pricier one...

The changes, or the monster itself? Either way, thanks.

While I liked most of the original KD content, more and more I've found that the designs are hit or miss for me. I think the closer to survival and a Dark Souls vibe, the more it resonates; the more towards body horror (a genre I love if done well) or sex the less I like it, largely because I don't think they get much nuance...

This is one that I've not yet built as I'm not keen on the overly sexualised elements. You've done a fantastic job removing these and that glow... wow!

Yeah that's a much better take on the Lion God (as much as I like the chubby little face of the original).

Thanks, yeah, it really felt like, i dunno, not even suggestive, just openly sexual organs for no other sake than having them. aku, yeah, I actually liked the old face decently as a concept and if it looked more like the one on the rules' inside cover I might have kept it, but it looked too much to me like someone had practiced sculpting will farrell's face and then didn't bother to give it an expression.

The changes. And let me second that. To me KD ends where it stops being about survival. Best horrors born with a darkness and a lantern are always in ones own head... IMHO.

Loving all of these. The green on the shielded warrior really pops, the use of red throughout that first piece is really well done and I am absolutely in love with the metals on the last guy. How did you achieve that effect?

Thanks! The short version is that it's a combination of more traditional NMM and blending, and rejecting those skills. If you paint it pretty normal if a bit dark but then really don't hold back with black shading or white highlights without intervening steps esp. lighter greys, it can get that intense pop. It doesn't look amazingly realistic, but as slightly stylized, I really enjoy the effect.

Thanks for the info spiralingcadaver. I'm really loving the looks of those blades and agree it's less realistic more stylistic and I feel that's exactly why they're speaking to me. Will definitely be giving it a shot on my current project. Thanks again!

Got to say, the bright white highlights really hit me too, really well done and a cool style to see. Love the green shield on one of the survivors and the molten look to the Butcher.
